lthough he has been working as a Pastor at La Siesta Evangelical Church for over 2 years, until last week Keith Brown remained that one step away from achieving his lifetime ambition, that of becoming a fully ordained minister. But on Saturday afternoon all that changed when the former policemen finally ended the journey that he first set out on over 50 years ago. At La Siesta Evangelical Church he was ordained into the Iglesia Evangélica Española (The Christian Church of Spain) in front of a large congregation of family, friends and invited guests, including Graham Knight, as well as Ministers from the Anglican Church, TCF and ICA. There was also representation from the Royal British Legion, the Costelleros and members of the IEE from Alicante, Valencia and Cartagena. After a moving tribute to his wife, Fiona, who, as Church Secretary, was responsible for the recruitment of Keith and his setting out on the road to

ordination, Church Elder Howard Cook introduced Pastor Abraham Garcia Rena, President of the Presbytery of Levante of the Iglesia Evangélica Española, to which the Church belongs, who got the service underway. The ceremony itself was carried out by Pastor D. José Manuel Mochón Martín, Vice President of the Permanent Commission of the IEE, the church governing body, who travelled to Torrevieja from Malaga. He was assisted both by Pastor Abraham and Pastor Davíd Manzanas Pelegrina from Alicante. Keith has lived in Spain since 2003, and, initially was a Ministry team member within the Anglican church of St Peter and St Paul, Torrevieja which is part of the Church of England, Europe. He was originally installed as the minister and Pastor of La Siesta Evangelical Church in October 2011 at which time, according to the normal procedure of the Iglesia Evangélica Española in Madrid, he was authorised to perform all sacraments including Holy Communion, Baptisms and Wedding Blessings. Keith is, and always will be a non stipendary Pastor. Born in South East London in the late 1940’s, Keith attended the London City Mission Chapel and accepted Christ as his Lord and Saviour at the age of 12. When he was 16 Keith attended the Anglican Church helping to lead Pathfinders, a young people’s group in his local community. He has also served as a Scout leader and a Group Scout Leader in Berkshire, a civilian instructor in the Air Training Corps as well as an instructor and safety officer for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold award scheme with the Buckinghamshire County Council. Amongst his many other duties in the area Keith is President and Chaplain of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion. Keith is married to Cathy Carson, a retired professional singer. The couple have three children, a son living in Vancouver, Canada, and, two daughters living in Northamptonshire. The Iglesia Evangélica Española was founded in 1869, it is a member of the World Council of Churches, the Conference of European Churches, the World Communion of Reformed Churches and the World Methodist Council. The ordination of Keith Brown was the very first such ceremony every carried out to an English speaking congregation by the Iglesia Evangélica Española at La Siesta Church. The church itself has a Sunday School, a Youth Group, Ladies friendship Group, an excellent choir as was amply demonstrated at the ordination ceremony, and a small Brass Group. Services are held at 9.30 am on the 1st and 3rd Sundays and at 11am on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of the month, when applicable. All are welcome to attend the very friendly congregation which is made up of 9 different denominations from many parts of the United Kingdom.

ANTONIO ZAPATA TO LEAD PSOE IN 2015 ELECTIONS Following the surprise public announcement last week that the current Deputy Mayor of Orihuela, Antonia Moreno, would step down, Antonio Zapata has this week announced his intention to aspire to lead the PSOE to a win in the next municipal elections. Antonio Zapata, currently number 2 in the PSOE in municipal list, will focus his attention on the 2015 elections, and has no intention to fulfil the post of Deputy Mayor at this time. Once the resignation is formalised at the end of this month, there may still be a shuffle within the ruling bipartite, but as Moreno had no official competences, there only seems a logical move to share some of the other group member´s responsibilities with incoming Victor Ruiz.

GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR CORVERA Though shrouded in controversy, whilst eagerly awaited by some, the new Murcia Regional Airport at Corvera has been given another lifeline, as the Spanish government has announced public funding to the tune of 40 million euro. Although almost completely ready to operate, the completion had been paralysed since 2012, but now, with this additional funding provided by the Instituto de Crédito Oficial, towards part of a syndicated loan with La Caixa, Banco Espirito Santo and Bankia, among others, in favour of airport concessionaire Aeromur, for 200 million euro. Before investing more in the project again, the entities require the regional government and the concessionaire to sign a new contract for the operation of the airport. “We are negotiating and that is an improvement on a few months ago but not mean we will agree with Aeromur”, said a source from the

regional government. The concessionaire led by Sacyr requires secure financial stability guaranteed by the regional parliament of the airport by law. Thus, the administration would be required to compensate for losses. However, if all does go to plan, it is once again possible that the airport could be fully operational by the end of 2014.

ORIHUELA COSTA READING POINT NOW OPEN

Friday saw a momentous day on the Orihuela Costa, with the inauguration of the long awaited and anticipated “Reading Point”. For many years the coastal residents have asked for a library facility on the coast, this has now come to reality, with the new facility which has been installed inside a mothballed primary school building, which has been sat empty, without use or purpose, for some time. The mayor of the municipality, Monserrate Guillén, along with the councillors for education and tourism, Rosa Martínez, and the coast and International residents, Martina Scheurer, made the presentation in front of a group of residents who were keen to see the project work. Martina Scheurer made the opening speech, firstly saying how “delighted” she was that the government team have been able to achieve this, before thanking the volunteers who have worked tirelessly to catalogue more than 10,000 books and make the centre what it is, “I appreciate the

work of volunteers who have invested their time to make this possible and point especially to people who have donated books”. Rosa Martínez continued to explain that the centre is hosting a variety of community based initiatives, including English and Spanish language classes, dance groups, fitness classes and more. In fact, Martínez explained to The Leader after the event how she is keen to make the building a “multi-use centre for everybody to use, of any age, parents, social groups, children and adults”. Having been given a tour of the building, where there are a variety of different sized rooms, some set up for educational purposes like classrooms, as well as one large room with a full sized mirrored wall, which is ideal for the dance and fitness groups. Moreover, Martínez explained that it is hoped that families will be able to use the centre together, perhaps with the parents attending a class or workshop, whilst their children are in another, in

the safety of a unit that was otherwise redundant. Monserrate Guillén praised the work of those behind the project, and explained that in his opinion this multipurpose facility is essential for the coexistence of the residents of the coast, before detailing an example of a similar centre in the Entre Naranjos urbanisation, where a full timetable of activities to promote integration and development has already proven a success, “we all live in the same town and have to feel united”, he said. Whilst some may criticise the fact is that the building has been given to community use, the doors have been opened to the “Reading Point” showing the commitment to providing municipal facilities to residents. So much so, the town hall are happy to listen to further suggestions from groups wishing to use the facilities, so that the dream of bringing communities together can grow, a concept that can only be achieved by the support of those communities it is there to serve.

ELEVENTH YEAR FOR CAROLS IN THE SQ UARE In a tradition that is standing the test of time, now reaching its eleventh year, the main square in Torrevieja became awash with red and White, as international residents came together to welcome the Christmas season with a traditional open air carol concert. It was in the Plaza de la Consitución in front of the main Inmaculada Church where thousands gathered to be greeted by Bill Singleton, as traditionally the Master of Ceremonies as the event itself.

TORREVIEJA’S DAY OF MAGIC AND FUN

Although it is much the same as each year previous, as one would expect from a tradition, the delight on the faces of those attending was clear to see, as the visitors also enjoyed snacks and drinks from the outside bars, and wandered around the nativity scene, before many attended the mass that followed the concert. There is no question that the dedication of those involved has started the season in true festive style, with one and all coming together in the true nature of the spirit of Christmas.

The Children's Parade in Torrevieja was a day of magic and fun for the hundreds of children on Saturday who lined the city streets filled with dozens of fairy tale characters One of the city’s most eagerly awaited parades in honour of the Immaculate Conception was scheduled to take place a week ago but it was moved because of the inclement weather. Eagerly awaited by the children it finally went ahead supported by local theatre groups, dance academies and dozens of characters including many of the heroes and villains from Disney and other from animated films. Despite being slightly smaller than in recent years it was still enjoyed by thousands of tourists and their

GUARDIA CIVIL INTERCEPT BOAT OFF ORIHUELA COASTLINE A provincial maritime patrol of the Guardia Civil in Alicante intercepted a boat off the coast of the Orihuela Costa last week, around 20 nautical miles from Cabo Roig, carrying eight men, all of them elderly and in good health, and all of North African origin. The boat was spotted at around 01:50 on Sunday morning, prompting the patrol boat to investigate, arriving in Torrevieja some 2 hours later. The Cruz Roja also attended, along with an Arabic translator and two ambulances. Upon arrival at the port of Torrevieja, the eight passengers were checked for their condition of health, two of them being taken to Torrevieja hospital showing signs of hypothermia, a third with a minor knee injury.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS OF THE CABALLEROS DE SAN CRISTÓBAL

MOVING MARKETS

The Councillor for markets in Torrevieja, Lola Sánchez Roca, has announced that because Christmas and New Year´s day both fall on a Wednesday this year, the weekly market at La Mata will be held a day earlier, on the Tuesday of those weeks, Tuesday 24th December and Tuesday 31st December.

The Honourable and Royal Order of the Caballeros de San Cristóbal closed their 620th anniversary celebrations this weekend, with a performance at the Orihuela chapel of Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal. A parade by the NATO Military Music Unit and a static performance by the band led the celebrators to a mass, which coincided with a military ceremony to formally take possession of the order of the consul, sash presentation and finally affirming the oath to duty. As the traditional celebrations came to an end, a lighter note fell on the congregation, closing the event with an offering of chocolate.

TERRA MITICA FINALLY MAKES A PROFIT Having first opened its gates in the year 2000, it has taken more than a decade to achieve, but Benidorm based theme park Terra Mitica closed their 2012 year accounts with an operating profit of 1.59 million euro, before tax, taking into account the offset to pay off debts.

The Aqualandia group, led by Georges Santa-Maria, took over the management of Terra Mitica in 2010, under a lease with a purchase option which materialized two years later, in July 2012, when it acquired the stake in the shares owned by the Valencia government, along with CAM and Bancaja, amounting to 65 million euro. The first challenge facing the company, who already operate amusements in Benidorm, was to drastically cut costs, thus reducing the workforce by some 50 people immediately, and also applying to remove an additional 186 posts. These combined staff cuts led to a 51% saving of staff costs in 2012. The next move was to cut costs accrued by external suppliers and contractors, which were slashed by 6.2% and 38.6% respectively. Next were their attempts to increase revenue, and turn around the significantly falling numbers of attendees and subsequent income. The park had already seen a 12.1% drop in sales, equating to 15.6 million euro, thought mostly due to the strain on the nation´s finances, thus reducing the disposable income of families. Ticket prices and combined offers all featured in their marketing mix, along with various promotions and a revised timetable of opening hours, providing a more realistic attraction during busier seasons. Food and drink supplies, as well as gift shops also saw some revisions. With all of these factors combined, the management team have realised what they said from the first day of operation, that the park can be a success, if it is properly managed. However, there´s only so much that overpriced drinks and food can help with their historic dilemmas, for example, they still have to pay 20 million euro to the public company, Sociedad Proyectos Temáticos de la Comunidad Valenciana, before the end of the year.

CRACKS AND ALLEGIANCES IN THE ORIHUELA POLITICAL FIELD – RIGHT OF REPLY here were several points made in last week’s article on page 8 of the Leader newspaper which in C.L.A.R.O.’s opinion require correction. The assertion that C.L.A.R.O. is a turn coat party and has become “an additional member” of the Popular Party is a complete misrepresentation. I resigned from the three-party Socialist, Green and CLR government after 8 months as Councillor for the Coast, but in name only. With the connivance of the Mayor, Pedro Mancebo was appointed as “controlling councillor” for the coast and with the support of the Socialist and Green parties he removed personnel from the Playa Flamenca office of the Town Hall and took over €500,000 from the budget of the coast on the pretence that it was being “borrowed” temporarily to pay the electricity bill. The money was in fact used for projects in Orihuela city and surrounding villages and when I tried to get it back in the context of the 2012 budget I had no support. After resigning, the choice was either to remain a single, isolated voice in the council or, with C.L.A.R.O’s decisive vote, seek to change the majority and get a better deal from a Popular Party-CLARO government. Details of the better deal are contained in the published PPCLARO agreement of summer, 2012 with proposals to improve services, strengthen and improve the running of the Playa Flamenca office of the Town Hall and a series of investment priorities. Included in

T

this agreement was the statement that C.L.A.R.O. would contest the next 2015 municipal election independently with no allegiances with any other party. No recent, discreet step as your article suggests. Rather, proof of a consistent policy to use C.L.A.R.O’s one vote in the council to get the best possible deal for Orihuela Costa. Unfortunately, the PP-CLARO majority has not been able to come to power democratically because of a legal manipulation by CLR which limits my voting rights as a councillor as well as those of another councillor expelled unjustly, like me, from the original CLR-CLARO group. The importance of the use of the funds from the sale of land in Orihuela Costa is not the amount needed to finish off an already built centre in La Aparecida, which all the Orihuela parties approve, but the vote of the PP-CLARO majority in the council plenary that 40% of the over €4 million resulting from the sale of land should be reserved for investment projects in Orihuela Costa. With over €1.5 million, Orihuela Costa now has an opportunity to get a proper Civic Centre with theatre, cinema, library and meeting rooms for associations as well as an initiative for senior citizens so they get services equal to those enjoyed in Orihuela city. The two-party minority government (after they expelled Pedro Mancebo), have earmarked 75% of the over €4 million for Orihuela and surrounding villages but without a major-

ity they cannot implement their proposals. Finally, I think your article gives disproportionate space to criticism of C.L.A.R.O’s internal democracy by a group of local CLR supporters none of whom enjoy elected office in the CLR party because of its internal “democracy” and because it is an Orihuela city party first and foremost. C.L.AR.O.’s 8th Annual General Meeting on 29 November was the occasion for democratic debate on policies and strategy and a vote for its Executive Committee all approved by overwhelming majority and not dictated by its President or anyone else. Unlike your article, we believe that as the only broad-based party with a specific Orihuela Costa focus and no particular political leaning, C.L.A.R.O. can play a decisive role after the next election in bringing about much needed improvements for the Orihuela Costa.

NOTHING LIKE A DA ME!! Aladdin, San Flugencio – Studio 32 production There is nothing like a pantomime to get you in the Festive mood and Studio 32 certainly did that this weekend with their production of Aladdin. This is the first production for Studio 32 and may this be the first of many. The cast and the entire team worked incredibly hard to put on a fantastic, colourful and entertaining production of Aladdin which was enjoyed by all in the theatre. No-one forget the unforgettable performance of Widow Twanky played by John Lockwood who entertained the audience with a resounding performance of a true pantomime Dame and then there was the beautiful voice of Princess So Shi played

by Stefanie Lohse whose, singing mesmerized all in attendance. These are just 2 of an incredible cast of people who together ,put on a fantastic production of Aladdin. And, if the performance was not enough, all of the tickets sales were donated to the San Fulgencio Alzeihmer Charity and by Saturday afternoon a total of 2600 Euro had been raised and more to come ! So watch out for Studio 32 Productions, they are a company to look out for in 2014 – their next production will be in June 2014 and keep watching their website for more information www.studiothirtytwo.org – or better still if you want to join them CALL 966 318 019.

JACK AND THE ELEVATOR? The ADAPT Panto was again a rip-roaring success. This year we performed at the Casa de Cultura, San Pedro, Jack and the Beanstalk, a traditional panto, in two languages. Pantomime is not something that our Spanish friends are accustomed to but through ADAPT the locals of San Pedro are becoming familiar with and they look forward to it each year. We had quite a bit of ad-libbing from the stage and also from the audience which created a fun atmosphere and we had the usual clever and funny onscreen videos, one of which was the elevator up to the Giant´s castle, which meant that our Jack didn´t actually have to climb the beanstalk! When our cow, Lightning, failed to produce any milk Jack got a carton from the ´Milk Dispenser´ Now you would expect to see a giant in this panto,

well not in our panto. We went one better and had two ´Giant Babies´ who toddled about the stage and danced The Sugar Plum Fairy while leaving a huge golden dummy and spoon for Jack to steal. Half way through we had the ´Audience Participation´ bit. The scene was the village green. A barn dance was demonstrated and then we had the children from the audience to join in which was very cute and funny. Funnier still was when the adult volunteers joined in! It´s not as easy as it looks. Packed full of laughter, music and dancing, with wonderful adaptation from Jane Cronin and production and direction from Eric Berg, we enjoyed it as much as the audience. Proceeds amounting to €1,929.12 will be going to the El Samaritano Food Bank Association, a very worthwhile cause.

ORIHUELA AND COSTA NEWS ROUNDUP Nine officers from Orihuela´s Local Police joined sixteen of their National colleagues on a course on the use of an extendable baton as part of their crime fighting arsenal. The course, which was organised by the Federal Union of Police and the National Police, was held in the municipal facilities at Palacio del Agua. The free course, which lasted for 3 hours, covered the use of the baton for self defence, as well as disarming and incapacitating criminals. As well as the practical elements of the course, it has also served to show how closely the two forces are combining their resources with the aim of protecting and serving the community.

ly involved in the cleaning of las rambla del Raiguero de Bonanza, which has already begun, along with work at La Aparecida and La Matanza.

The Coastal Department has finalised the details of the construction of a park in the Las Filipinas urbanisation, which had been awarded to a company in 2010, but had never been completed, for reasons which are unclear, according to Councillor Martina Scheurer. The budget of 18,000 euro included the installation of children´s play and adult fitness features, and native plants were placed in the park´s perimeter, after general clearing work was also completed. Finally, a zebra crossing that leads to the park and has been improved.

A group of International residents from the Orihuela Costa met for the first time this week, with the aim of creating a social group who would meet on a regular basis and talk in their own native tongue. The aim of the initiative is to act as a language interchange between foreigners wishing to learn or improve their Spanish, and Spaniards wishing to better their own methods of communication. In the first meeting, there were already representatives from the Spanish, English, German and Portuguese communities, with others unable to make the first meeting, but still keen to be involved, representing the Chinese and Russian residents. It is hoped that the groups will hold regular meetings at the newly opened “Reading Point” on the Orihuela Costa, which the town hall hope will develop into a multi-use centre for the coastal residents.

Councillor for education, Rosa Martínez, announced the launch of a “Winter School” which will be available on the 23rd, 26th, 27th and 30th of December, as well as the 2nd and 3rd of January, which, for the third time, aims to “facilitate the reconciliation of work and family life”. The idea is to make it easier for working parents to balance their own schedules with their childcare, providing an educational component at the same time as entertaining and caring for the children in the scheme.

The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has commenced the first stage of the next improvement plans to the road infrastructure on the Orihuela Costa, with plans to create bollards which will separate the traffic near to the garden centre of Los Dolces on the Villamartin road, an area where numerous accidents have occurred and where countless drivers choose to ignore the road markings, thus making the road safer for everybody who uses it. In addition, on the roadway towards the canal, municipal technicians have been measuring the area in order to create and submit plans to build pedestrian pavements where there are currently none, and walkers have to mingle with both parked and moving cars to make their way along the road. The Department of Infrastructure has been busy this week, putting 5,000 plants across various areas, including parks, gardens, streets and squares, to make Orihuela particularly pretty for the holiday season. In total, 4,500 petunias and pansies have been planted in gardens and parks, 650 poinsettias on main streets and principal locations such as the Glorieta Gabriel Miró, as well as two pyracanthas shaped Christmas trees, with all work having been done by brigades of the Department of Infrastructure.

Another ten unemployed residents of the Orihuela municipality have managed to find work this week, thanks to a scheme implemented by the Councillor for work, Manuel Gallud, in collaboration with the Servef employment agency. The town hall has contributed 40,000 euro towards the scheme, which will be managed by Servef, giving the workers a 5 month contract, during which time they will be principal-

Dangers of our Unusable Pavements! Where is the Council Planning?

A

nyone trying to walk to shops or entertainment centres on Orihuela Costa has the inevitable task of negotiating the worst pavements imaginable. It is little surprise that most pedestrians choose to walk in the roads as the safer and easier alternative. Walking around any part of Orihuela Costa one is confronted with obstacles and hazards that defy imagination. In this age of the car there are many sectors of the population who have no alternative but to walk and use public transport. Young people under eighteen clearly have to walk, being under age to drive. Many adults have never learnt to drive or live in households where the car is used by another member of the family for work purposes, thus being deprived of personal transport for prolonged periods of the week. Other people are no longer able to drive through age, illness or disability. Other people choose to walk to local shops for exercise, something we are all being encouraged to do! Many motorist and their passengers choose to walk to entertainment complexes so that they can enjoy a drink without falling foul of drink drive legislation. What is immediately evident on Orihuela Costa is that no thought or consideration has ever been given to the pedestrian. Housing estates may have semi reasonable paved areas around the complex, but many paths cease at the end of a particular development. Some paths even end in a wall or hedge so that there is no way of safely progressing onto the next urbanisation without walking on the road. In some areas good pavements exist that suddenly terminate in the middle of nowhere. There are many areas where no pavement exists at all, even though it is a built up area with plenty of houses so clearly a development is in existence! Where pavements do exist they are woefully inadequate. Several pavements within Orihuela Costa have insufficient width for two people to walk side by side, even parents and very young children are forced to walk in single file! One such path runs between the two sections of the Villa Martin golf course. This path is a main access route from Eagles Nest, Blue Lagoon, El Galan and Las Filipinas etc. to the Villa Martin Plaza and is well trodden by residents and tourists alike who wisely choose to leave their car at home when having a night out at the many bars and restaurants situated at the Villa Martin Plaza. There is no network of pathways that give a traffic free and direct access to the beaches, even from urbanisations that are less than two kilometres from the sea, for example Lomas de Don Juan, Torrezenia / La Cuerda. People from these urbanisations have footpaths that suddenly cease and have the hazard of crossing the motorway by La Regia that makes absolutely no provision for pedestrians at all.

Many of the pavements on the costa are a disgrace

What is evident is that there has never been any type of co-ordinated planning for the whole of Orihuela Costa. Housing developments are erected piecemeal. No consideration is made for pedestrians, even though up to 50% of the population have to rely on foot power and occasional public transport for mobility. Is it surprising that there is not even rudimentary consideration for the needs pedestrians when planning decisions are made by individuals who have no interest in the needs of people living on Orihuela Costa and who live over thirty kilometres distance? It is clear that all of us who reside on the Orihuela Costa must ensure that sufficient councillors are elected who can challenge the ridiculous planning decisions and ensure that they are amended to the benefit of people who actually live on the coast. Ensure your name is on the electors list and use your vote in the next council elections.

WATCHING THE SPEED TRAPS

A

s social networks and mobile phones become smarter, the method of disseminating info becomes not only easier, but capable of reaching more people in one go, traffico have become increasingly aware that their speed trap locations are now even easier to share, thus warning potential offenders of their presence, and reducing their capture rates. It is no wonder therefore that the traffic department of the Guardia Civil are now keeping a watchful eye on some of these websites, so that they know if they are being watched, watching us. According to sources at the DGT traffic department, there is no “crime” in sharing this information, in fact, doing so is currently “legal”, and, whereas future legislation may well include this method of warning, the same was as using on-board radar detectors is now covered, there is little more the Guardia Civil can do at the moment, other than keeping moving. Moving is exactly how the Guardia Civil intend to fight back from their side, by watching the social sites for reports of their location, and then moving to a new one, whilst also trying to keep one step ahead, by “moving every five minutes”, according to the same source. “If we see a location posted on the internet, alerting drivers behind, we proceed at the same time to remove the checkpoint and place it in another place”. This information has also coincided with the launch of a special road movement operation to improve the follow of traffic during the holiday weekend, with 5 million trips expected on the roads, and it also coincides with the news that Santa will be brining the DGT more airborne radar equipment in time for Christmas.

CONFUSION FEAR OVER OLD CAR NOTICES As featured in The Leader a few weeks ago, the Spanish traffic department, the DGT, has started a campaign of awareness aimed at the owners of older cars. The aim is to point out how more modern vehicles, compared to those of over 10 years of age, have better fuel economy and are cheaper to run, as well as highlighting how safety features on cars has improved tremendously in recent years, and so, modern vehicles are far safer for all road users than those older cars.. The document contains a variety of information, including technical and administrative specifications, and is on official paper, which some officials feel may cause some confusion, as some people may think it is a fine that must be paid for some kind of offence relating to their vehicle. The document is simply an awareness and information campaign, and they are not liable to any fine just because they have an older vehicle. With over half of the cars on Spanish roads believed to be over 10 years old and with the Spanish government extending subsidy for older car trade-ins, it is hoped that newer vehicles will take over those which may be a risk, as well as injecting much needed business for the motor trade. The Ministry of the Interior say in a statement that a total of 13 million letters are being sent in different phases, the purpose of the campaign based on the commitment to transparency of the DGT, improving road safety and reducing the main risk factors.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The Cumbre Vieja

THE LA PALMA MEGATSUNAMI I’m off to the Canarian island of La Palma, which is also known as ‘The Beautiful Island’, again next week. Although I live on the island of Gran Canaria, all of the seven main islands that make up this fascinating archipelago are very different to each other. I try to visit each island from time to time, but I am particularly fond of La Palma, which is the fifth largest of the seven main islands, covering an area of around 706 square kilometres, with a population of around 90,000 people, most of whom live in the island’s capital city of Santa Cruz de la Palma. It is a lush, green and wooded island, with beautiful forests, and is a walker’s paradise. Clear skies make this island a stargazer’s paradise too, which is one of the reasons that a number of international telescopes operate on the island to monitor the night skies. The island offers the most diverse plant life of all the Canary Islands, together with species such as the La Palma Giant Lizard, La Palma Chaffinch, Quail and Goldcrest, all of which are unique to the island. Since 1983, the island has been one of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Should tourists wish to escape sun seekers heading for the beaches on the larger islands, this is the place to come. As with all the Canary Islands, La Palma is volcanic in origin, with the

volcano rising to around 7km (4 miles) above the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. The island was formed around 4 million years ago, and is one of the most volcanically active of all the Canary Islands, and this is where the problems begin... It has been suggested by some that one day, far into the future, La Palma will be the cause of one of the largest tsunamis that the world has ever known. Indeed, to clarify its awesome status, it has been referred to as a megatsunami in waiting. This is based on the hypothesis that rising pressure caused part of Cumbre Vieja, which is a volcanic ridge in the south of the island, to slip towards the Atlantic Ocean and that during a future volcanic eruption, part of it would slip into the Atlantic. Currently, the Cumbre Vieja is dormant, with the last eruption taking place in 1971. Should the worst occur, it has been speculated that the resulting megatsunami would create a giant wave of around 49 metres (160ft) causing devastation along the Atlantic coastlines of North America,

wiping out New York, the Caribbean and the north coast of South America, as well as affecting an area of around 25 km (16 miles) inland from the coast. From the moment that part of La Palma falls into the Atlantic there will be a period of about 6 to 8 hours before it hits the American coastline. In any case, should the worst happen, it is not supposed to happen for another ten thousand years or so, which should allow plenty of time to move home. I should also make it clear that many eminent scientists and geologists have refuted this theory as pure hype, and claim that La Palma is stable and will not fall into the sea. It is claimed that this is a disaster theory invented by researchers intent on gaining funding for their own research projects. Others claim that this is a convenient story exaggerated by US insurance companies, intent on raising insurance premiums, as well as being seen as a business opportunity by the hazard industry. Even if the worst should happen, there would hardly be more than a splash felt at the other side of the Atlantic, and so New Yorkers should continue to feel safe. There’s nothing like a good disaster story is there? After all, we all flock to the movies to see them. However, when it is closer to real life, it is not quite so entertaining. This story has already created many victims. Questions were asked in the British Parliament following a BBC television programme that first revealed the danger, many Americans considered selling up and moving to higher ground, tourists cancelled holidays to La Palma, many expats sold their homes on the island and many charter flights to the island ceased. As for me, I cannot wait to visit and explore the island once again. However, I will make sure that I do not jump up and down too energetically when I get to Cumbre Vieja - just in case! STAGESTRUCK PLAYS TO FULL HOUSES Stagestruck presented their annual panto in the Cardenal Beluga theatre San Fulgencio on the 29th, 30th November and 1st December to three very enthusiastic audiences.

This year it was Jack and the Beanstalk with an ‘all talking all singing beanstalk’ the like of which has never before been seen. The magnificent stage set built by Gary Rearden and script written, directed and choreographed by talented local resident Stella Rearden. It tells the story of the Trott family's descent into rent arrears and poverty. The Dame Titiana Trott, and what a dame with bits in places most don't even have places, under pressure from the local fuzz, reminiscent of the Keystone cops, decides to sell Matilda the cow. Many a cow have I milked but what this one would give I know not. The decision to sell the cow lands Jack in trouble when he is swindled into accepting a bag of worthless beans. Jack, dame and Simple Simon, funky or what, set off in hot pursuit of Matilda. They know they are on the right track when they see ‘cowpoo’ that tastes very like

nutella. Hmm, lovely!! Along the way they meet grotesque tree spirits, what were those things, and all singing all dancing Fairy liquide. The giant Blunderbore and his henchman Rancid are rendered helpless with the help of a magic sword. Matilda is saved and normality restored Jack's luck changes when he tells a young girl you really are gorgeous and pulls a Princess. Must try that line sometime. They fall in love, marry and live happily ever after. The show was performed by a cast of 26 and backstage crew of 8 of which every single one thoroughly deserves praise. Songs poignant and popular were superb and the choreography eye catching. Special mention must be made of the decision to perform a matinee on Sunday to encourage theatre going by the kids. Would it work, well work it did. Countless of the little blighters kept up an incessant barrage nearly taking over the show at one point. Wonderful. The 3 nights raised a total of 2,700 euros and the Stagestruck company wish to extend the warmest gratitude to our following for their generosity. Currently over 15,000 euros in 2 years. Every cent raised goes to charity as their shows are all funded by their murder mystery evenings. Come and see one sometime. The company look forward to entertaining you all again in the near future and in the mean time wish you all a merry Christmas and happy new year. Information on all matters regarding Stagestruck can be had on 965 07 6700

ABBEY ANGLING

XI CROSS URBANO GUARDAMAR

This week’s match was fished on the river Segura at Murcia on Tuesday the 10th December. The cutters have been in and cut all the reeds down to water level, which will suffice for now until they start the dredging of the river. The Federation has advised us that work will begin in about 6 months that is possibly June? All being well The water was cold but a good colour and pace, and the bridge is now passable to the other pegs. 1st Lennie (Ex cultural attaché) Bolton with 21.040kg fishing the pole and using bread punch 2nd Neil (The Boy) McBirnie with 19.320kg fishing pole and using bread punch 3rd Bill (The Master) Reade 18.590kg fishing the pole and feeder using banded pellet

A series of junior races over 500 – 1500m distances, started from between 5pm & 6pm followed by the main 7.58K event promptly at 7pm. The senior & veteran runners´ race began from the Town Hall / Church Plaza and included just fewer than 1,100 competitors. The conditions were ideal, no wind & a reasonable 12º C but the massed start constricted the flow of runners over the first kilometre especially. It was a very “atmospheric” event, with a firework display at the start & tremendous support from the crowds lining the complete course. The quality of the field was most evident, with the first 20 athletes home in well under 25 minutes. “Running Wild A.C.” of Los Dolses, was able only to include 3 vets. & unfortunately, the highest age category available was Vet “E” (over 55 yrs.), whereas they were all considerably older than the majority of that group. Howver, they ran well & finished in the following order:Paul Bell (VM 64) - 38:38, 38th in category “E” John Pascoe (VM 80)- 41:27, 50th “ “ “ Frauke Gerlach (VW 75)- 55:22, 12th “ “

CARP-R-US NEWS This weeks match, the 3rd of the Winter Series should have been fished at the Sweet water Canal. But as remedial work is still being undertaken, the area was taped off. We moved to behind the Wok buffet in Guardamar. The fishing was very meagre, and only 2 members managed to catch. First on the day was Ian Dalzell, and in second place, John Brightling. Next weeks match, the last until January, will be held at the Eden Canal. Normal times. The last quiz night of the year will be on Tuesday December 17th. Please come along and have a fun evening. Cost of entry is 1€ per person and teams of 6 or less can take part. The Club meets at bar El Alto La Dolores near the Repsol garage on the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar. Anyone interested in joining this Angling and Social Club can do so from 1st January. For further information please visit the club website www.carprus.net or telephone 966 71 7923.

180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams, Paul Durrant (Meerkats), Sid Cross x2 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters), Mike Smith (Breakaways Bears) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 From the Hyenas point of view it was a surprise defeat, the Misfits would argue they were never behind in a very close tussle that saw them needing just one double for the match with 3 legs to play. To be fair to the hosts it must have been very difficult playing an outfit in luminous yellow shirts that could be seen in Madrid. Players and supporters alike all bedecked in brilliant NEW yellow team shirts, designed to dazzle and they did, the result going their way too. Captain Sonya Cooper, now injury free, chose to play alongside son Karl and Pete James in the first 3 triples facing Hyenas Lee Holtham, Richie Weaver and Dave Lethaby. The 3 legs that followed (701)

could have gone either way, but the visitors held the advantage after taking the first and third legs via the Coopers Sonya D2 and Karl D10. Holtham 121,118 replied for the Hyenas on D1. The home sides choice of Andy Brooker, Geoff Harvey and Jim Underwood looked too strong for the opposition who chose Ron Young, George Caine and Leah Chesworth. You could not have been more wrong. Young pegged the double to increase the lead to 2, despite Harvey's 107 to set up a double. A surprise substitution by Cooper followed, replacing all 3 with Steve Cox, Zoe James and Tina Kaylor. James did the damage finishing D5 after tons from Cox and Underwood. No big scores in the next leg giving Harvey the opportunity of hitting the double for a 2-4 scoreline. The Hyenas eventually got going in the next 3 legs, Holtham 100,140 and D8 Underwood 126 and Harvey 100,D9 only for Chesworth to spoil the run hitting D10 bang in the centre for 4-5. James D5 edged the Misfits closer to the finishing line for 4-6 needing just one leg for overall victory. A ton from Misfits captain Cooper was answered with a 140 from Harvey, setting up D2 for Underwood 5-6.Weaver got in the scoring act with a ton, Holtham wrapping up the leg on D10 for 6 apiece. The last leg saw missed opportunities from both sides, Karl Cooper121 wired the winning double as did Holtham. Step up captain fantastic for the Misfits to hit D4 second dart for the match and a semi final place. The match deservedly went all 13 legs, will the Misfits dazzle in the semi's? Cup holders Hub Meerkats faced an in form Que Pasa missing their secret weapon John Walker currently in the UK. He is however not the only player of note in the side, in fact the Eagles are a good all round team, but Walkers powerful scoring ability could well have made a difference in this tie. Eagles captain Den Hall selected Eddie Klimonis, Stuart Clark and Jim Waddell to face a strong Kats trio of Pat Abrams, John Eyre and Paul Durrant for the first 3 legs. Some modest scoring from both sides kept the score line close at 1-2 in favour of the Kats, Waddell 125, Klimonis 2x100 and a D2, sandwiched by two doubles from Durrant D10 and D8, Eyre hitting 116,125, Abrams100. Kevin Wood, Joe Cuyt and Jim Storey were next to the oche, playing Alex Nikolov, Graham Todd and Del Kingsbury. Nikolov increased the Kats lead nailing D4, D10 with a ton thrown in. Lee Maiden joined the side for the sixth leg and

promptly hit a ton, but it wasn't enough as Storey 100 and Hall D20 took the leg 2-4. Abrams D20 and D8 increased the Kats lead to 4 and one leg from victory. A spirited ninth leg from the Eagles, Klimonis 138 and Clark D8 gave the hosts a glimmer of hope, but to no avail as Abrams hit the match winning D2, his third of the evening, for his side to progress into next Februarys semi finals. Busters will be joining them in the draw, after their away victory to the Pirates of P.B's. Despite their respective league positions, it wasn't the walkover some may have expected. Shame it wasn't best of 5 legs for the Pirates as they found themselves 3-0 up after the Lanes' John and Michelle shared the 3 winning doubles. Busters pulled one back only to once again go 3 behind when Jan Weston requiring 70 points finished the leg on D17. The sixth leg went to the visitors for 4-2 at the break. Busters took the next 2 for 4 all, only for the Pirates to once again take the lead with a real opportunity of victory. The visitors realising their predicament, stepped up a gear and reeled off the next 3 legs for a fine win. Brian Mears 134, John Lane 100 and Michelle Lane 105 top scored for the unlucky Pirates, whist Ray Harvey 3x100, Will Drummond 3x100 and Peter O'Rourke 2x100 were Busters main contributors. Disappointingly there is no information to hand for the Pint DepotHattons tie at the time of writing. The Hunks will of course join Busters, Madigans and the Hub Meerkats in the semi final draw to be held in January, ties to be played on the 6th February, both at neutral venues. Due to unforeseen technical glitches at Exite radio, my Saturday slot with Kevin Reardon has been off air for the past 2 weeks. l am assured the show goes on this week, for our usual chat about the Euronics league and the top footie matches, not forgetting any other trivia arising. MURCIA MATCHPLAY LEAGUE On another great day for Golf our fourth match was held at Las Ramblas .As always a difficult time to play with a lot of the players off back to the UK. However with that said the results confirm that this is going to be a very tight fought league. Our first game brought together the two top teams leaders Roco-Juna against second placed Club 25 the ever improving Club25 were on this occasion to strong for boys from Roco Juna running out winners by 7pts to 1 & holes 28 to 18. Second off were neighbours La-Manga v/s Hacienda.I,m sorry to say Ian your team rotation method does not seem to be working another 7pts to 1 & 26 to 17 holes won for LaManga pushing them up the table Next into the fray San-Javier v/s Marinasol and San-Javier ran out winners by 5pts to 3pts & 24holes each won. San-Javier remain the only unbeaten team in the league.Last years champions were next to test the Las-Ramblas ravines only to run up a drawn game with the ever improving Costa-Blanca 4pts each with 25 to 24 holes won. In the last game Sierra Golf claimed the game when The Sprightly Crew could not raise a team the rule being that 8pts & 24 holes won

VEGA BAJA GOLF LEAGUE This was the first visit to Lo Romero Golf for the Vega Baja Premier Golf League and what a pleasure it was, with accolades from most of the golfers on the condition and layout of the Jorge Gallen and Enric Soler designed course. Thank you to Director of Golf Jaime Iba?ez and his staff. Third place Las Ramblas took on leaders Club 25 Serena and came away victors with a win and the second highest team score of the day, which moved them into second spot joint with La Manga RGA again it was a lady Carole Wheeler (Las Ramblas) who was the highest individual scorer following her 38 points last month. Paddy’s Point felt the strength of a La Manga North team with six players scoring 30 plus points meant that all the points went to the LMN side despite Myra Coull of Paddy’s Point scoring whopping 40 points. The other La Manga side did not do quite so well but well enough claiming 12 of the 15 points available against Rockets, The ladies obviously enjoyed the course as Florence Von Carlowitz came in with a huge 41 points deserving a second handicap cut in two league matches, also so well done Rodney Smith and Geoff Poyner for taking three points in winning their game. It was the two teams EuroToffs and Don Cayo at the wrong end of the table who pitted their skills against each other and it was another lady who had the highest score Christine MacKeag 34 points, which obviously helped in getting the bonus points in the point sharing game/ It’s a pleasure report on the ladies success in the league with four of them amassing 154 points between them. Other teams take note they ain’t the weaker sex! LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Villamartin 11.12 13 Here we are December 11th and our penultimate game before Christmas and the New Year and Villamartin proved a great venue. Forty of our members and guests travelled the short distance to the course looking forward to our last stableford of the year. After this game all scores for the year are looked at and calculated to find out who the Player of the Year will be and also which pair would win the Chosen Pairs. Everyone was interested in each other scores trying to guess the out come of these majors. The course looked a bit worn with the trampling of many feet over the past months but all in all the day went well. The weather was fair to cool just perfect for good scoring, but one of our members who was having a particularly trying day was further exacerbated by seeing his ball ball end up in a bunker after it was hit by another ball. He philosophically said that it was not his day and accepted his fate. The results of the day were: Gold Division: 1st Brian Coultate 34pts, 2nd Mike Johnson 33 pts and 3rd Brian Leys 31pts Silver Division: 1st Paul Flanaghan 34pts, 2nd George Stuart 32pts c/b and 3rd Gordon Cobb 32pts Bronze Division: 1st Margaret O'Brien 32pts, 2nd Dave Keating 29pts and 3rd Danny MacErlean 28pts. NTPs: Brian Smith hole 7, Stan Earl hole 9, Mike Johnson hole 11 and Malcolm Morrison hole 15. Not a single 2 was recorded so a there is a roll over for the Christmas event at Vistabella. The free game draw was won by Dave Keating

Lo Marabu Golf Society In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Altorreal on 28th November 2013. For this month’s meeting a group of 24 players visited the established course at Altorreal taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather forecast was poor but we thankfully ended the day without getting wet which was a result. The reception from Lola and the staff at Altorreal was warm and welcoming as always and despite some remedial work being done on the greens the course was enjoyed by all. 1st – Dave Marriott – 34 points 2nd – Mike Probert – 32 points 3rd – Barry Allsop – 31 points Best Front 9 – Bill Jamieson – 17 points Best Back 9 – Colin Mitchell -16 points Nearest the Pins – Winston Blackwood (2), Colin Mitchell and Brian Smith Dog of a Day Trophy – Paul Heffron After the game we returned to the Lo Marabu, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation. Our next fixture is the Christmas Competition which has been switched to 19th December 2013 at Font Del Llop and this will be followed later that evening by the annual Christmas dinner and prize presentation. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. The Rules of Golf The golfing year 2013 seems to have been overshadowed on in the world of professional golf by rules disputed starting at the Masters in April with the incorrect drop taken by Tiger Woods on the par 5 15th hole and concluding with a ruling and ultimate suspension of Simon Dyson for incorrectly touching the line of his put with his putter. Many of this year’s instances have been ‘called’ by avid viewers watching the incidents on HD and slow play back. The powers that be have now amended the rules to cover such eventualities but it is typical for such rules ‘instances’ to ‘spill’ over into amateur golf. Here on the Costa’s you will regularly see and hear players incorrectly taking relief drops or other players incorrectly calling penalties against their playing partners. Now lets be clear that the rules of golf as issued by the Royal and Ancient are complex and numerous. However there is one simple rule that my father used to preach which simply stated is “The only times you should touch the ball is to tee it up and pick it out of the hole, other than that “keep your fingers off the ball”. Simple it may seem but apply it to your rounds of golf and see what happens.

We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number, below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are some of the best currently available to you.

EMERALD ISLE BOWLS By Bill Allen On 6 December the Claymores made the short journey to play El Rancho and despite being warned about the wide swing and fast green, our new bowlers just couldn't come to terms with it so we only managed two winning rinks. Shot difference - LOTS - and 4 points to 10. Not the best of days. Also on 6th, the Cavaliers visited San Luis Tigers for a very close game on all but two rinks. Best win of the day was by Marilyn Shatwell, Gerald Shatwell and Geof Farrington who had a brilliant 30 - 7 win. However, the overall shot difference went to the home side with 119 to 99, giving us 7 points each. Was it just a slip? On Monday, 9 December, the Moonrakers visited San Miguel. An intriguing game because of illness, and he-who-shall- not-be-named turning up after the game, we had a changed team. Unfortunately the result was 4 points to 10 and a shot difference of 97 to San Miguel's 117. Not a good day for the Moonrakers! The Neptunes vs Greenlands Chestnuts made a very sorry week for the EI, going down 2 points to 12 with 89 shots to 134, and also the Titans going down to La Marina Explorers with 6 points to 8 and 104 shots to 115 despite winning on on 3 rinks each. Keith Jolliffe, Ed Sheperd & Chri Ayling achieved the biggest win 16 -12 - a hard fought game which came good in the end winning 10 ends to 8. Bill Hawthorne, Peter Willicott & Ann McDowell with 17 - 17 on the 17th end, they picked up 2 shots on the last end to win 19 - 17. Once again Renata Mulloy, Dave Close & Jo Close, the newest trip on the block, had a good win 20 – 19, may their good form continue into the second half of the season. Losing rinks were Mel ODell, Jim Mulloy & John Zeller with 20 -19, They were 16 - 10 down on the 14th end and pulled back to lose 16 - 17 on the last end, Gerald Shatwell, Gina Streeter & Marilyn Shatwell lost 21-25 in a very hard fought game. They were in front 17 - 15 on the 13th end but dropped 7 shots on the 14th and 15th ends to go 17- 22 down having pulled back 4 shots on the last 3 ends to lose. Biggest losers were John Mullarky, Barbara Eldred & John Jarvis with a disappointing 25 -12 loss, only winning 7 ends, but someone in the team is struggling to come to terms with the little sides and the big sides of the bowls! Mr. Mullarky will have to give the player extra tuition before the start of the rest of the season! Overall we believe the team has done better than expected and can go into the second half with heads held high. We played our last monthly game of the year against the Highjackers on Tuesday, 10 December. All eight rinks were in play and the Isle decided to give the visitors a Christmas gift of a win (if you believe that, you will believe anything). Winning on 5 rinks to our 3 and with a shot difference of 214 to 119, well done the Highjackers. I guess this is a week to forget for EI. However, we can't all be hanged - not enough rope! We wish a safe and Happy Christmas & New Year to all bowlers from all of us at the Emerald Isle.

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB The Pearls have had two good weeks, both at home to Country Bowls Supernovas where we won 13-1 and this week at home to San Miguel Pulsars winning 11-3 which has moved us up to second in the league table. The Diamonds have had a couple of mixed weeks, the first away to Greenlands Chestnuts where we only managed 2 points, Norma Lamberton, Rob Pinfold and David Johnson the winning rink. Our second game was away to El Rancho Plutos where we gained 5 points. Winning rinks were Doug Beattie, Abgy Benson, John Watson; Jim Bowness, Stella Jakeman, Maureen Bowness, and a drew with Barry Armstrong, jartin Richardson and Margaret Smith. Well done to Tina and Joe Brinton and Dorothy Benson in the friendly. In the Southern League the Swifts are maintaining their top position following their match with La Siesta Golds, with a close result of 8-6 (shots 102-99). The Swallows were at home to Greenlands Cedars where the result was very close, but the Swallows managed to win on 5 rinks and draw on 1 so taking the points win and the overall shots. The following week the Swallows were away to Greenlands Elms where another tight game resulted in the Swallows winning 8-6 (shots 103-89). Last week the Winter League was away to San Luis where we had a great win 10-2 and with our Berleen team having another resounding win a good day for everybody. Unfortunately this week was a great disappointment when we entertained El Cid at home and only managed a win on 1 rink, well done Mel Highland, Dave Donovan, George Radmore and Jack Martin. On Wednesday 18th our Honorary Life Member, Ken Leeming is putting on an Xmas Mufti game where the Club Secretary's Team will take on the Treasurer's team with the theme being the Spirit of Christmas. This will be followed by a buffet and win. lub information from Joe Riley on 96 572 5787 or e mailjeodiriley@gmail.com...............By Deidre Leeming

B Tomlin, F & M Edwards 20-10. S Mahomet, S Hibberd, A Goodfellow 21-17. D Lawton, G & C Chapman 17-13. P Lockley, A Toozer, S Heath 1818. Sycamores went one better in their Discovery div match against El Rancho Broncos, when they recorded a superb 140 victory. Merry Christmas everybody: B Doran, J Reeves, G Inwood 24-14. Terry Lawton won the latest T & DIC, with Dave Giddings, Heather Meason & David Bray, close behind, whilst Ann Butterworth took home the wooden spoon. Sat 14 Dec is the last of the year, with Sat 11 Jan being the recommencement date. I would personally like to thank joint organisers, Jim Oliver and Charles Langlois, for all their hard work in making Saturday morning so enjoyable. Twas a case of back to winning ways for the winter leaguers, following their slight/mighty blip the previous outing. A home fixture against Finca Guila yielded a maximum 12 points, catapulting them up to 3rd in the table. Ding dong merrily on high: S Johnson, S Gray, C Chapman, T Hill 22-19. G Bater, M Veale, L Greenland, S Cantley 24-11. C Thomas, G Watt, B Collins, D Greenland 21-16. J Collins, S Hibberd, G Chapman, A Goodfellow 14-11. J Pocock, L Morris, S Heath, B Pocock 18-15. Internal club Thursday 2/3 wood trips league, entered the final week, with the team of Dave Webb, Pam Cluney & Mike Cassidy victorious over Penny Tomkins, Dave Thompson & Chip Chapman. Finally, Royal British Legion sent a team of 8 trips for a friendly, followed by a traditional Sunday lunch and raffle. Although Greenlands won on 5 rinks and drew on 1, there was some really close heads on display. By Steve Hibberd

ELCHE LOSE TO LOCAL RIVALS LEVANTE ..2 ELCHE CF ...1 BY JOHN The Friday night battle of Valencia was won MCGREGOR by Levante from up the coast, where on bal-

ance of play a draw would have been fairer, Elche having led for twenty minutes in the first half. Before the match both teams were in mid-table with 17 points each, but with Levante’s poor home form showing only one win in eight with four defeats, and Elche’s three away wins the Illicitanos’ must have been optimistic about their chances. Surprisingly Elche fielded three major changes, all in defence: in goal Tono started his first league game after playing against Villarreal in last week’s Copa del Rey, and at right back Rumanian Christiano Sapuranu replaced Damian Suarez. In central defence veteran defender Serge Peligrin replaced David Lomban alongside Botia, with Albacar at left back. In central midfield Ruben Perez partnered Carlos Sanchez, across in front were Carles Gil, Coro and Fidel supporting lone striker Boakye. For Levante old Elche friend and favourite Jordi Xumetra appeared. Only 10 minutes had gone when a cross from the right saw a dangerous chance for Levante scrambled away, at the other end moments later Coro tricked his way down the left to provide an opportunity for

Sapuranu scoring the Elche opener www.elchecf.es

Boakye, who blasted the chance over the bar. No matter, two minutes later and Elche were ahead, all courtesy of the Franjiverde’s defence. Wide left just inside the Levante half Albacar’s free kick found Botia at the far post: his header back reached Sapuranu who slammed it home to the joy of several thousand noisy supporters who had made the journey from Elche. Five minutes from half-time Fidel missed a golden chance to make it two, as his effort went just wide after being put clear through by Boakye’s flicked header. This proved expensive as a minute later it was 1 – 1, a long cross from the Levante left finding Barral with a lot to do, but he rose between the Elche centre-backs to guide his header into the corner past Tono: half-time all square. In the second half Levante pressed forward with intent and Elche’s defence was put to the test. A weak header out of the visitor’s area was returned with venom, and just finger-tipped over the bar by Tono. Immediately after Fidel was replaced, not before time by Aaron. Boakye was booked for a late tackle, but then somehow contrived to miss from two yards out, that eventually proving to be another costly error. Botia was similarly booked before Sapuranu went off injured to be subbed by utility man Mantecon, and soon after Boakye was replaced by new striker Christian, substitute and scorer of the unlikely winner against neighbours Valencia two weeks ago when again the scores were level. No such wonders this time, as with ten minutes left another deep cross into the Elche defence saw Barral, once again, rise between Botia and Peligrin to glance his header past Tono, ironically enough almost a carbon copy of his first goal. Almost on time Christian was booked for a far post foul on the goalkeeper as a final Albacar free kick was beaten out, and the home side won 2 – 1 to great joy from the Blue and Red striped supporters, and the Illicitanos’ cursing their missed opportunities. Next week is busy for Elche at home: on Tuesday is the replay of the Copa del Rey against Villarreal at 8pm, followed by another Friday night outing in the league at 8pm, this time against worried Malaga. Last season’s Champions League semi-finalists are in trouble, sitting 15th in the league three points behind Elche in 12th. Mucho Elche!

VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice Monday’s games produced mixed results with both teams playing away. The Albatrosses had the best of it with a 10 points to 4 win at Horadada and by 110 shots to 93, against the Falcons. Leading the way were Beryl Regan, Les Barber and Ian Kenyon ably supported by Jenny Bowman, Mike Cox and Richard Lee, Gail Watson, Maggie Furness and Fred Willshire and Stuart Allman, Mac Maclean and Brian Dunn. The Eagles unfortunately lost by the same points 4 to 10 and by 90 shots to 114 at La Marina against the high flying Pathfinders. Our winning teams were Mo Foulcer, Brian Pointon and Sue Mynott and Rosemarie Savage, Richard Hind and Pat Rafferty. On Wednesday we faced league leaders San Luis winning 2 of the 5 rinks and drawing the other but unfortunately losing the overall shot difference by 5 shots at 78 shots to San Luis 83 so losing by 5 points to San Luis . Our wins came from Gail Watson, Andy Leggatt, Maggie Furness and Fred Willshire and Diane Harwood, Tony Sambrook, Ian Kenyon and Jim Harwood, our draw came from Sheila Cox, Barbara Brown Les Barber and Arthur Brown. We completed our final league games before Christmas on Friday and once again as on Monday we produced mirror image results as far as the points were concerned the Lanzadores entertained La Siesta Blues and won 12 points to 2 while the Conquistadors travelled to San Luis to take on their Pumas and lost by 2 points to 12. The Lanzadores had a big shot win by 138 shots to 89, thanks to wins from Sandra Burrows, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee, Tony French, Ian Kenyon and Mike Regan, Beryl Regan, Dane Howard and Arthur Brown, Les Barber, Fred Willshire and Brian Dunn and Stuart Allman, Neil Burrows and Maggie Furness, while the Conquistadors lost by 82 shots to 121, our only win coming from Helen Marshall, Diane Hudson and Brian Prockter. Vistabella would like to send Best Wishes for the festive season to all the Bowls Clubs on the Costa Blanca.

END TO END BUT STILL GOAL-LESS

RAFAL 0 DAYA NUEVA 0

(Cadets Alicante 2a) From the kick off Daya tore into Rafal and saw a good opportunity fall to Luis but his first touch let him down. Just moments later another good chance came the visitors' way but they failed to capitalise on it. The home side rode this early pressure and began to come more into the game, pushing Daya back. Then the visitors fought back and the game became end to end attacking football. On 20 minutes Angel hit a fierce cross shot that flew past the home side's far post with their keeper stranded. Shortly after, following more good work by Luis, Marcos should have done better with his effort on goal ! Daya were playing well now but Rafal were still dangerous on the counter. With half time looming Carlos had a good effort saved well by the home side's keeper. It was all square at the break following a very entertaining half from both sides. Rafal came out for the second half and took the game to Daya. Then on 55 minutes Luis struck a great free kick that hit the post and was scrambled away for a Daya corner, could this inspire the visitors to raise their game ? Back came Rafal with a couple of chances of their own that had the visitors' defence at full stretch. More chances then came Daya's way in this end to end contest and surely the first goal would be the winning goal ! Rafal should have been in front on 74 minutes but the miss of the match kept Daya in the game. With the whistle about to go for full time, Hugo had a great goal bound effort headed clear with the Rafal keeper

well beaten. So 0 - 0 at full time. This was a fantastic game with end to end attacking football with both sides creating many chances. Danni in the Daya goal worked well for his shut-out but the Rafal goalkeeper was by far the busier though. Luis was Man of the Match for Daya, he does not stop working. The referee was in total control of a very exciting match and he had a very good game. Daya Dave.........Team Sponsor: Segurlab
