UNITED TO RULE
After 2 years battling in opposition, trying everything possible to return, from moves to discredit and plans to block salaries, the Partido Popular are set to return to govern following a pact with yet another arch enemy, the CLR. Now, brushing aside their differences, Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas of the CLR, have joined with the Partido Popular to make the necessary 13 names to sign a censure motion to overthrow the bipartite government team of the PSOE and Los Verdes, and return the PP to power. It was in the local elections of 2011 that the PP lost their control of Orihuela, a position they had held since 1987, with one opinion being that their neglect if the coastal zone had swung the vote away from their majority. The Partido Popular was ejected from rule after thirteen councillors from a PSOE, CLR-CLARO and Los Verdes coalition combined to form the government team. However, it was not long into
their tenure that Bob Houliston from CLARO resigned from government, saying that his reasons were because of the “systematic refusal of an element in the government to cooperate and coordinate their activities which concern the coast with me, referring to Pedro Mancebo, who had been given more control of the coastal zone than Houliston thought appropriate. Asuncion Mayoral from CLR was later to be expelled from her political group too, both of these factors becoming a key point now. Most recently, Antonia Moreno, the head of the PSOE, also resigned from her role as deputy mayor. In January, 2013, Pedro Mancebo was also expelled from the government by the Mayor, which prompted the resignation of his colleague, Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas. In the summer of 2013, the PP, along with Bob Houliston, attempted the signing of a censure motion, but this move failed on account of confusion and controversy of who should lead, and disagreement within the ranks of the Orihuela PP as to the lack of approval up their chain of command. Continued from Page One Much has already been documented about the regional party not wanting Mónica Lorente to return as the local head, as anybody facing legal investigations into corruption cases are exempt from holding the top posts, a situation also frequently commented on by Perdo Mancebo during his time in opposition. As a result, the group have nominated Josefina (Pepa) Ferrando García as the Mayor, with the intention for her to take the seat as the eighth such holder of the title of Mayor since Orihuela began a democratic concern in 1979. As the document has now been signed, and supported by the regional party head, approved by the Regional Secretary, Serafín Castellano, an extraordinary plenary meeting has been called for the 3rd of January, at which point, the motion will be formally tabled and the responsibility of government handed back to the PP, with their new coalition of CLR, resulting in the PSOE and Los Verdes being removed to the role of opposition. During the signing of the document, Castellano said that the motion is “future orientated” for the “growth, progress and stability for the city of Orihuela”, confirming that “an act of democratic justice” has been achieved, as the PP, along with CLR, now hold over 20,000 votes, giving them an overall majority to rule the municipality of near 100,000. However, of the people who have signed the motion, which was formally handed in at the town hall on Friday, one person missing is the PP´s former ally of the coast, Bob Houliston. His CLARO party had an agreement with the PP, which would apply for the term of this administrative period, but Houliston and Mancebo had long since fallen out of their own pact after the 2011 elections, it was unlikely that the pair would ever be able to reconcile, with the PP now seemingly choosing a different alignment of previous opposers. Bob Houliston told The Leader, “C.L.A.R.O. learned from the press on Thursday, 19 December that the Popular Party and Pedro Mancebo's CLR party had joined together to sign a motion of censure”, continuing, “This decision by the PP constituted a unilateral breaking of the PP-CLARO government agreement of July,
2012. In C.L.A.R.O's opinion it was a complete deception and a cynical act motivated by the desire of the Popular Party to enter into government at no matter what price.” In view of this move, and the “negative and destructive role played by the CLR Party of Pedro Mancebo in relation to C.L.A.R.O.”, explaining that his party “considers that it would be a disservice to Orihuela and to Orihuela Costa if they were to become partners in a government with the Popular Party”. Therefore, C.L.A.R.O's Executive Committee have agreed that the party should join Asuncion Mayoral, also expelled from the CLR-CLARO council group by Pedro Mancebo, to seek to “invalidate the motion of censure by expelling Pedro Mancebo and his CLR colleague from the CLR-CLARO Coalition, the political formation on the basis of which the two parties contested the municipal election of 2011”. Following a meeting held on Saturday, this expulsion took place, for which Mancebo and Lopez Bas have three days in which to appeal this decision which, “if it is confirmed could invalidate their participation in the planned PP-CLR motion of censure just as Pedro Mancebo had previously limited the rights of Bob Houliston and Asuncion Mayoral to vote in a motion of censure against the government”. Meanwhile, in the midst of this legal battle, the current mayor of the municipality, Monserrate Guillén, has vowed that he and his team will continue to work “until the very last day”, for the interests of the people of the municipality, even confirming that the regular plenary meeting due to be held on the 27th of this month, will continue with “absolute normality”. Guillén is also adamant that he has held his post with a clear conscience, and, whenever his time as mayor does come to an end, whether it be a matter of weeks, or sometime in the future, “I came with an empty suitcase and I´ll go with it equally empty”, having gained little personally whilst serving the municipality, other than the belief that he has worked for the citizens of one of the most politically fragmented areas of Spain.
CATHY ALL TABBED OUT Following the business end of the meeting TAABS were once again on hand to bring Christmas cheer to the December gathering of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion at their most recent meeting held at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras. Their performance of carols and Christmas songs has now become one of the highlights in the organization’s social calendar but this year their concert had special significance. It was the very last occasion they sang under the direction of Cathy Carson. Following the ordination of her husband Keith she has decided to spend rather more of her time at his side, providing him with the additional support that his new role will undoubtedly need. Earlier in the evening Cathy had accepted a certificate of appreciation from the Chairman Keith Carter, thanking both her and the group for the entertainment and support they had provided and
wishing her well in her retirement. She will be replaced as Musical Director by Shirley Godfrey who, for all future bookings, can be reached on 677 313 073.

AIDEN BYRNE’S HIS W AY AROUND VISTABELLA
Before leaving for the course at 7.30am we were well wrapped up with waterproofs and woolly hats anticipating low temperatures at the course BUT we couldn’t be more wrong because some welcome cloud cover kept the temperature at a pleasant level and then half way through the round the sun came out making it a thoroughly warm winter day. The course was in beautiful condition with some of the best greens in the area and we must say a big thank you to Pablo Riestra and his team who worked wonders in collecting money, preparing cards and processing the scores and producing the winners list. Today’s competition was the latest in the series of competitions sponsored by THE LEADER newspaper/EXITE radio in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services and consisted of an 18 hole stableford with a field of 38 players. The purpose of these events is to provide competitive, friendly and affordable golf and listening to the feedback from the competi-
tors we appeared to ticked all of these boxes. Taking part in any event is important and to then win something puts the icing on the cake and for today’s event the prizes were provided by our main sponsors Costa Blanca Green Fee Services, the Leader,’ Mick the Grip’ Reeves, Liberty Seguros and of course Vistabella themselves and our thanks go to them for their support. There were a whole host of prizes ranging from tea mugs to green fee vouchers with many valued prizes in between and the majority of those players who attended the prize presentation appeared to go away with something. The football card draw was won by Martin Collins who collected €15 (but don’t tell his wife). The balance of the football card proceeds were ‘topped up’ by Mike Probert and the Leader who presented €25 to Mick the Grip for Help the Heroes and the British Legion. On the day there was remarkably consistent golf played which reflected in good scoring and the nearest the pin prizes were well contested and the winners on the day were as follows:

EXPERTS PREDICT 5% ELECTRICITY PRICE HIKE IN JANUARY Financial experts are predicting a price increase in excess of 5% on domestic electricity bills in the New Year, on account of increases in the wholesale supply marketplace. The wholesale electricity price has risen sharply in recent days, with increases of up to 13% possible, which also looks likely to continue, which could have an adverse affect on the energy auction and supply rate during the first quarter, which starts on the 19th of December.
This increase would mean a 5% increase in January, assuming the government keeps its promise on frozen tariffs for regulated activities. The rate was up by 3% in January, down by 6.6% in April and picked up again by 1.2% in July, was up 1.2% as an additional tax in August to balance the reduction in profit that the supply companies faced, and increased by 3.1% in October´s review. The auction to establish the public rate comes only a few days after the sharp increase in wholesale supply, which has raised some suspicions and enquiries by the National Commission on Financial Markets and Competition. Secretary of State for Energy, Alberto Nadal, has said that there are factors that explain these prices, including the shutting down of three nuclear power plants; he also noted that the Government wants to ensure “that no external factor has influenced the price”.

ENGLISH FILMS IN PILAR There were about 90 people attending the recent meeting held in Pilar Cinema. The outcome of the meeting was that everyone agreed that an Association should be formed to show English films. Traditional 35 mm films are no longer made and to show the films in the new format would require a digital projector costing €35,000-€50,000 which they cannot afford at the moment. It is planned to show films by projecting DVDs using a digital projector which can be rented for €600 per month. Unfortunately you cannot sell tickets when showing a DVD film as this is forbidden. Other costs would include hiring the films which would amount to €1,000 per month, cost for lighting, cleaning etc of €400 per month making a monthly cost in total of €2,000 per month. Therefore it is necessary to have at least 200 people joining the Association at a cost of €10 per month which would give the person entrance to the cinema free for four weeks. Each person in the Association would have to commit for nine months. If anyone is interested could you please contact Diego on duplexespaciocultural@gmail.com expressing who you are ie numbers involved like a couple. What days you would like to have films shown, bearing in mind that it can only be Monday to Friday. Please put as the subject of the e-mail ´Cinema Club – English films´. So far 86 people have shown interest and it is hoped that there will be enough interest to get this project off the ground early in the new year.

REAL MADRID, BARCELONA AND ELCHE ACCUSED OF RECEIVING ILLEGAL AID Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said on Monday that the European Commission (EC) has opened an official investigation into the receipt of illegal state aid by seven Spanish football clubs including Elche and Hercules, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Osasuna and Valencia. He then confirmed that the Spanish government has never made any illegal grants and is now preparing arguments to defend the clubs in question. "It is obvious that the government will defend the seven clubs which are all part of the brand Spain" he said. However the EC is citing the clubs for three different reasons, stating that they have benefited from public support incompatible with European Community rules. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Club Bilbao and Osasuna are all being investigated because of their special tax status which, as they are still owned by their members, or socios, is said to provide them with an unfair tax advantage while the focus is on
Valencia, Elche and Hercules who are being investigated because of help that they have received from the regional government in the form of loans and bank guarantees. In addition, a further investigation is being carried out by the Commission into the affairs of Real Madrid over aid they received for the construction of their new training facilities at Valdebebas near Madrid's main airport, and Bilbao over aid they received for the construction of their new stadium, which opened this season. Brussels has said that all these investigations are at an early stage and there is still a great deal of legal argument to be covered. The minister said, there will now be a period of three months for the government to present it’s arguments. The decision to begin proceedings, which could take many months to conclude and produce actual sanctions, will be officially announced in Brussels on Wednesday, Margallo was quoted as telling reporters in the Belgian capital.
WARNING ISSU ED OVER IKEA LA MPS A Spanish consumer association has joined echoed calls by furniture giant Ikea, who have urged parents of small children to ensure that electric cables from lamps are out of their reach. The move has come about after Ikea issued a recall notice for their Smilla range of lamps, after a 16 month old baby died having been strangled by the cord. Other incidents have also been reported, but only one resulted in the tragic death. In a statement, the company has asked that customers who have bought the Ikea Smilla lamps should check that the cables are “out of reach of children, when located in a crib or playpen and the cable is attached to the wall safely”. The lamps come in a variety of designs from stars to seahorses, all with a 2 metre long cable. Ikea has said that affected customers can either return or receive “a free safety kit that includes a warning label, safety instructions and adhesive fasteners to secure the cable to the wall”. The company also apologised to their customers.

LANGUAGE COURSE IN PILAR
Pilar’s Councillor for Integration, Violeta Martínez, attended the final day of a language course last Wednesday where she presented certificates of achievement to 36 foreign students who had all successfully completed a course in ‘Spanish for Foreigners’ organised by the Town Hall. The students, all from different nationalities , said they were very pleased with the outcome of the course, all of whom joined in with the celebrations by learning a little of the Spanish culture as they each tasted a sample of traditional Christmas sweets in the classroom. Martínez said that in the next few weeks the Town Hall will be most likely to launch a new edition of the course as there are still many residents eager to learn the language and improve their knowledge of Spanish culture so that they might better integrate into their new way of life.

OVER 170 ATTEND ALAMEDA DEL MAR CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Alameda del Mar Civic Center held its Christmas party last week attended by over 170 people. The day consisted of a number of handicraft groups including sewing, painting and the decoration of handbags. There was also a choral recital, a dance class and a poetry reading in Dutch which was written and presented by one of the centre
The CEIP Manuel de Torres de Almoradí in the junior category and IES Gabriel Miró de Orihuela in the youth section have won the XIX Carol Contest held at the el Teatro Circo in Orihuela and organized by IES Las Espeñetas in conjunction with the Department of Education . Second and third in the Junior category were the Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Orihuela, and el Colegio Público San Pedro Apóstol, de Granja de Rocamora. In the youth category runners up were IES San Pascual de Dolores while the IES Rafal finished in third. In total, more than 300 students comprising eight choirs were represented. Each had to sing the once compulsory piece of 'Oh Blanca Navidad' followed by two further carols of their own choice. Prizes were presented to the schools by The Councillor for Education, Rosa Martinez.
Earlier in the week both the Councillor for Infrastructure and Sports, Antonia Moreno and Luis Galiano, called into the city centre facility to see how work was progressing. Moreno said that the process will use approximately 500 kilos of three different types of seeds. The contract for the work was awarded to the Cade company Cade from Murcia , whose bid was far cheaper than the others as they have their own specialised machinery and equipment and do not have to bring it in on hire. Galiano also revealed that a draft agreement is currently being prepared which will see the City Council sponsor Orihuela Club de Fubol with a 60,000 euros grant, the same as last year, despite relegation from Segunda Division B. They will also receive a further 35,000 euros which will pay for the maintenance of the stadium.
VOTING APATHY FROM EXPATS ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA Shocking Apathy! At a recent meeting at the Civic Centre Orihuela Costa there was a discussion about voting rights for European citizens living in Spain. The talk was especially aimed at ensuring that European citizens exercised their right to vote in the forthcoming European Parliament Elections to be held in 2014. Presently there is a campaign aimed at encouraging non Spanish residents to ensure they are on the voters list for this election. Unfortunately the 5,299 letters that have been sent out to people registered on the Padron since the last European Elections are only for inclusion on the voters list for European Elections and not for the Local Government Elections that will be held in 2015. What was most shocking was that of the 27,786 people from different European countries living on Orihuela Costa with the right to vote in Local Elections only 4,063 are actually registered on the list of voters! This shows a degree of apathy which is frankly alarming. Basically only 14.6% of people have actually made the effort to make sure their names are on the list of voters held at the Playa Flamenca Town Hall. Is it surprising then that Orihuela Costa has only ever once managed to elect one representative onto the Council in Orihuela? The consequences of this voting apathy by Orihuela Costa inhabitants are apparent everywhere on the coast. Over the years there has been a mad scramble to build ever more houses yet there has never been the corresponding growth in services to meet the needs of a population of over 33,000 people. For every section of the population the lack of spending by the Orihuela Council has impacted negatively on the quality of their lives. Everyone, from the youngest inhabitant to the eldest person, suffers from the continued neglect and lack of investment on Orihuela Costa. What is even more alarming is that money raised by the sale of council owned land on Orihuela Costa has never been used to invest in facilities for Orihuela Costa inhabitants. Rather land sale revenue has been spent on lavish projects in Orihuela, or on extravagant cultural programmes staged in Orihuela or even spent on building projects in the small villages with populations of less than 3,000 people. Never has there been any attempt to invest in the type of amenities normal in every Spanish town and village. As everyone is more than aware there is no centre for older people on Orihuela Costa, no day care facilities for frail or disabled people, no cemetery, no youth service, no cultural centre, etc. The list of deficiencies is so long
Voters making their way to the polls in 2010
that it is frightening. Unfortunately the lack of council services and public amenities on Orihuela Costa can be attributed to all those non Spanish residents who fail to register their vote or cast their vote in local elections. Local government directly affects the quality of your life in Spain. It covers everything from the pavements we walk on to the care services offered to the vulnerable elderly person in need of residential care. Local Government affects your daily life far more directly than the European Parliament. It is in everyone’s interest that you register to vote and use your vote in local elections. Your vote matters. Together we can ensure Orihuela Costa has the services it deserves. If we elect more councillors we will receive more adequate investment.

Classic Christmas TV Cracker By Nick Ireland Waking up Christmas morning is always a very, very special occasion but perhaps even more so this year as ITV4 is screening highlights of last summer’s award-winning Silverstone Classic. Confirmation that the dedicated one-hour programme is to be broadcast on free-to-air television at 10:05am on Wednesday 25th December also provides those seeking the perfect last-minute Christmas present with a truly unique opportunity, the chance to gift tickets for next year’s Silverstone Classic while watching all the action from this year’s record breaking extravaganza. “It will really bring Christmas presents to life,” admitted Nick Wigley, Event Director. “Can you imagine the added thrill of waking up on Christmas morning, receiving
Silverstone Classic tickets and then fully appreciating what a special treat is in store by switching on the television. The prospect is almost too good to be true.” Adding to the festive occasion, a bespoke Silverstone Classic gift certificate can be downloaded from silverstoneclassic.com/giftcertificate. What’s more those buying tickets as Christmas presents can also take full advantage of ‘early-bird’ savings on offer to those booking well in advance. ITV4’s decision to repeat the Silverstone Classic on Christmas morning comes after the ratings success of the original four broadcasts screened immediately after this year’s spectacular event. More than a million viewers have already savoured those fast-moving programmes, which include much of the stunning on-track action as well as focusing on the amazing arrays of classic cars on display. While taking centre stage, the cars are by no means the only on-screen stars. Among a host of famous racing leg-
ends interviewed are three-time F1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart, five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell MBE and veteran commentator Murray Walker OBE. With the on-line box office open throughout the holiday period, tickets can be even be purchased on Christmas Day for those either taking their present buying right down to the wire or, perhaps, inspired by what they’re waking up to on ITV4 television. Full details can be found on the official www.silverstoneclassic.com website.

VIVACE’S COMMUNITY CAROL EVENING HELPS SAN MIGUEL Bearing in mind the continuing economic crisis and
Last Saturday, Vivace Classical Choir hosted a wonderful evening of community carols in the Casa de Cultura. The venue had been beautifully decorated, the choir were dressed in informal Christmas colours, and the atmosphere was warm and seasonal from the moment we entered. Everyone was provided with carol sheets and invited to join with the choir in many of the most popular and familiar carols – some in German or Spanish, as well as English, which was greatly appreciated by the international audience. The choir sang three choral items during the course of the evening, a Ukrainian carol, a negro spiritual and finally a really excellent performance of the well known Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah. Vivace will be performing a selection from the oratorio in April 2014, and more details will be available nearer the time. The evening was hosted by Musical Director Tom Pargeter, with everything being translated into Spanish by his wife Katy. Our picture shows Tom with the choir eagerly anticipating the evening’s entertainment.
its dire effects upon some families within the San Miguel community, for the first time, Vivace decided that there would be a bucket collection at the end of the evening. All proceeds are to be divided between two charities – Caritas, the well known charity, who will ensure that funds will be distributed locally to the needy in San Miguel, and the Finca la Castellana, a wonderful animal refuge and kennels based in San Miguel, which has been overwhelmed by animals in this time of crisis, when people can no longer afford the keep their pets. As ever in this area, the public responded magnificently, and our photo shows Tom and his wife Katy handing over a share of the proceeds to Janette Lopez, who along with her husband Antonio run the Finca la Castellana. Information about Vivace from Tom or Katy on 620 618 069, or email totomandkaty@tpargeter.com. CHRISTMAS IN ORIHUELA Instead of swans-a-swimming, the Christmas celebrations of Orihuela this year feature seven council departments all working together, as Youth, Culture, Costa, Sports, Trade, Tourism and Festivities launch a campaign to “energize and give animation and festive spirit to the streets of Orihuela”. Councillors Rosa Martínez and Manuel Gallud made a presentation, detailing some 34 different activities have been laid on, the first which was on Sunday, right through until early January. With everything from clowns and storytelling, musical theatre to rollerblading, all aimed primarily at keeping the younger members of the municipality entertained. However, the adults will not miss out either, with such delightful attractions as a creativity fair on the 4th of January, and similar gift opportunities each weekend near the cathedral. Full details are available from the tourist offices and the town hall, as Orihuela becomes festive for the season of Christmas.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
ID CARDS FOR EXPATS IN SPAIN Most expats living in Spain are anxious to do their best to fit into their local communities, as well as doing their best to abide by the law. However, sometimes Spain does not make it easy for expats to abide by the law, and the issue that I raise here is a good example. How many expats in Spain remember that rather useful identification card that was awarded to those expats who could meet the residency requirements a few years ago? This credit card size piece of identification not only carried the all important identification number and fingerprint, but a photo as well, which meant that it could be used for identification purposes in shops, banks, dealing with the authorities, as well as internal flights. Sadly, someone complained bitterly that an ID card was an insult to the status of being a European citizen, and it should not be necessary. Sadly, he was taken seriously and the implications were insufficiently considered. The fact that most European countries have their own system of ID cards was overlooked, and so the decision in Madrid to cancel ID cards for all expats was no big deal, because expats from other European countries could manage quite well with the ones issued by their own governments, although still lacking the Spanish ID number. Not so in the UK. No doubt many will remember the furore that the possible introduction of National Identity Cards in the UK caused. There was a predictable response about human rights and personal freedom in the press, which meant that the UK government could not proceed with the planned introduction to bring the UK in line with the
rest of Europe, and the project was scrapped. To the irritation of many expats in Spain, who were now left without any form of national identification, other than an A4 green sheet of paper issued by the Spanish authorities, this turnaround was nothing short of a disaster. The new form of identification did not contain a passport photo, which meant that a passport has, in theory, to be made available at all times, as it is the only valid and recognised form of identification that Brits have. Passports and UK driving licences do not carry the all important Spanish national identification number, and so the A4 green paper has to be carried as well. The authorities are also quite strict in insisting that the original A4 green sheet of paper be used and that copies are not acceptable. You can imagine the state of some of these flimsy and well-worn documents. A credit card sized version of the document was made available by the authorities in 2012, but was of little use since it still did not include a photo. Many expats have tried to get around the issue by continuing to use a laminated version of their old ID card, which is against the law and can lead to a hefty fine. In my own case, I photocopied the A4 green sheet of paper, together with my passport, which I had validated by a notary, as well as the police. Both have been rejected on a number of occasions, with the authorities insisting on seeing the original docu-
ments. Most expats that I know now tend to use their UK driving licence, if they still have one, in conjunction with A4 green sheet of paper, but there remains a strong likelihood of the document being rejected by an over zealous ‘jobsworth’ without an accompanying passport. It now seems that all is about to change with the reintroduction of the ID card for expats, sometime in 2014. This is an initiative that has been spearheaded by a group in the Balearic Islands who made representations to the EU, as well as to Members of Parliament in Madrid. The matter is now in the hands of the Head of Police and the Secretary of State who are studying the issue. It seems that something is moving, but as yet no there is formal confirmation or announcement. For fear that this could be yet another case of ‘bar room gossip’, I checked the information with the British Embassy in Madrid, who have issued the following statement, albeit in Diplomatic Non-Speak: “All EU citizens planning to reside in Spain for more than three months should register in person at the Oficina de Extranjeros in their province of residence or at designated Police stations. They will then be issued with a Residence Certificate stating their name, address, nationality, NIE number (Número de Identificación Extranjeros) and date of registration. “We are aware of a campaign by some EU citizens resident in Spain to seek changes in the format of the Residence Certificate. Ultimately it is a matter for the Spanish authorities to decide.” Although the timescale is uncertain, it does seem that something is happening at last, and it should become a little easier to abide by the law. CUTTING EDGE EYE TECHNOLOGY TESTED IN TORREVIEJA HOSPITAL Continuing to lead the way in medical technology, the ophthalmology department of the Torrevieja Hospital is working on another innovative scheme, one which enables the diagnosis and management of patients with ocular disease glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness in Spain. Although some may find the concept squeamish, others might think it the next stage in becoming like the bionic man or woman, as the medical experts have embedded a microchip into a contact lens which is able to detect small changes in the diameter of the cornea.
As part of the clinical trial, patients have to wear these lenses, which are easily placed in a small home storage device which records fluctuations in eye pressure 24 hours a day, even when sleeping. Dr. José Isidro Belda, head of the department, explains that “this is a pioneering measurement system that allows professionals to control the pressure of a patient when they are at home, at work or playing sports, which facilitates specialists to assess the effectiveness of certain drugs and the time of day used, morning, afternoon or evening, as well as the most appropriate dose in each case”. The cutting-edge clinical system, called Sensimed Triggerfish, also allows the lens to adapt to the size of the patient´s cornea, which allows them to continue to perform their daily activities as normal during the monitoring period. The telemetry microchip and an antennaintegrated into the contact lens, transmits the information captured by the sensor wirelessly, and after 24 hours, the user returns to the office with the device where specialists create graph with fluctuation of intraocular pressure in a day. It is estimated that over one million people over 40 years of age suffer from this eye disease, and nearly 50% do not know they have it, because it produces no symptoms until at its very advanced stage. At first, the painless condition usually affects the peripheral vision, of which we are not conscious, and only perceive the change in central vision when the glaucoma is advanced.

180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams, Paul Durrant (Meerkats), Sid Cross x2 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters), Mike Smith (Breakaways Bears) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 Yet another draw for the Pint Depot Kings, their fourth this season, against high flying Busters who keep their second place due to Que Pasa's defeat at the hands of the Meerkats. A great performance from the Kings who have really come to life these past few weeks. Busters will view the result as a slip, leaving them four points behind the leaders, or two wins if you prefer. The gap can still be closed by the half way stage on January 9th, as Busters take on the Meerkats, a game that may reduce the Kats lead to 2 points or in the event of Busters losing leave them in third spot, should Que Pasa beat the Tavern. Speculation, but exciting stuff. The Eagles faced the Kats for the second time in a week hoping to reverse the cup result. Back into the fold, after a short U.K visit, was the Eagles top man John Walker, who was sorely missed in the cup tie. They got off to a flyer, winning the first two via some impressive scoring from both sides. Walker 100 and D4 took the first and then missed D16 for a 106 out in the second. Two tons from Eddie Klimonis and a 123 from Walker had set up the finish, which the latter took out next throw. The Kats hadn't taken advantage of a barrage of scores from Pat Abrams 95,100,135 and Alex Nikolov 2 x 100 and were now 0-2 down. In the second triples a ton from Paul Durrant supported some excellent throwing from veteran John Eyre 2 x 100, 97 and D8 for 12. Eyre added another ton in the next as did Abrams who converted D16 for 2 each. The second pair was a little subdued Nikolov teaming up with father in law Derek Kingsbury to face the in form Klimonis
and captain Den Hall. No fireworks in the leg, until Nikolov requiring 32, not content with one double, hit two D7 and D9 for 3-2. Four tons featured in the third pair, 2 from Walker and the same from Durrant. The difference between the two pairs was "Geordie Boy" Eddie Bendelow, who calmly slotted home D16, requiring 64, for a great finish. 4-2. Kingsbury realising the Eagles would feature their top guns early in the singles sacrificed himself and went on first to face Jim Storey. To his surprise and one or two others he won, taking out D16. 5-2. Eyre faced Walker in the next, the crowd expecting a real ding dong. it wasn't quite that, but it was close, Eyre hitting 2 x 100, Walker not converting the treble into three figures. No trouble however when it came to the double hitting D20 first dart. 5-3. Klimonis made it 5-4 on D4. Durrant had the throw in the next playing Eagles captain Hall. Some good scoring from the Meerkats including a 125 set up D20. A couple of misses enabled Hall to leave 40, his opponent requiring D5. One dart later from the Meerkat gave the hosts a guaranteed point. 64. Abrams featured next and somehow won his leg on D1 and the match after some strange finishing darts and this after hitting 2 x 100 and 134 to leave 40. Must be his age. Jim Waddell squared up to Bendelow in the last and despite a ton couldn't match the oppositions 125,138 and D10. The Kats amassed 19 tons, the Eagles replied with a very below average for them of seven. The game was a pleasure to be involved in with plenty of good bantered atmosphere. Gogartys away victory over the Tavern keeps them in 7th place with the top half gradually moving away from the remaining seven teams. This year, like last will be a closely fought tussle for the League Plate contested by the teams currently occupying 7th-14th place. The Gophers got away to a blistering start, taking the first three legs. Kevin Prockter, Bliss Wright and Gail Todd doing the scoring damage in the first, Wright taking out D2. John Linton did much the same in the second, finishing off with D16. Steve Woods, Wright and Todd were at it again in the scoring department during the third, despite retaliation from Taverner Steve Ralphs. Wright once again found D2 to make it 0-3. The home side reduced the Gophers advantage through Ian Brown D16, Mike Snow 125,98 and Ralphs D8, only for John Linton to make it 2-4 on D8 at half time. John Durdsley made it 3-4 and then Snowy hit D10 for 4 apiece against a high scoring Todd. Bliss Wright recovered the lead for Gogartys, this time on D5. Prockter ensured a point, with some steady scoring and D10. Woods 140 got the all important 7th leg for victory after some peculiar finishing methods, eventually finding D1. Linton 100 wrapped up the game on D4 against Ralph Weatherby. Bliss Wright was awarded m.o.m status for her 3 winning doubles. Great performance. Lorraine Cox got the only double for the Pint Depot Queens out of the first six, on their visit to the Breakaways club. Jay Sharp and Kath Bryan did most of the damage finishing two legs each, assisted by Mike Douglas D20 to give the Bears a 5-1 lead at half time. Douglas D2 increased the Bears lead in the first single and ensured a point for his team. Cox struck again in her singles pegging D2 for 6-2. Enter Sharp for his third double of the night D10 and the match for the hosts. The Royals added two more legs via Queens, Griffiths and Dunne, before Sarah Simpson nailed D8 for her sides eight leg to conclude the evening. Carl Wilson 140 top scored for the Bears. whilst Griffiths and Cox shared the honour for the Queens. The other Royals from the Pint Depot the Kings, nearly pulled off the
scalp of the week, when it went down to the last leg of the evening Martyn Bynorth playing Buster Ray Harvey. The advantage was with the Kings having first throw but Bynorth having thrown well of late could only muster steady scoring with a high of 81. Harvey has also been playing well recently and was much steadier with 60,121 and 79 to leave 82 which he went out on to give a much relieved Busters a point to maintain their unbeaten record. There was never a great lead in the match, it was level at half time, although the Kings had taken an early lead through Eddie Fozzard on D4 despite a 138 from Bill Russell. Busters replied taking both triples through Paul Dowinton and Harvey D8. Irene Russell was in great form in the first doubles with Dowinton. She hit 140,81 and out on D16, her partner no slouch either hitting 81,60,100. Some more impressive scoring from Matt Cummins and Dave Wright gave the former the opportunity of finishing D18 to reduce the scoreline 2-3. Ian Sleaths 100 and Bynorths D7 made it all square at half time despite resistance from Bill Russell. Frank Wurrorck and Gary Minor put the Kings two ahead, Minor looking pretty good with 85,120,80 and D6. Peter O'Rourke pulled one back for Busters on D10 only to go two behind again, this time through Dave Wright hitting 134 to set up D16 against the formidable Irene Russell. At 6-4 down Busters were up against it, fortunately Dowinton was next to take out 64 on D16, leaving Harvey the honour of saving the match for Busters. Hub Hyenas keep up the pressure on the top three with a comfortable victory over dangerous Porterhouse. The visitors took the first three legs via Shaun Smith´s D10, Simon Williams D1 and Lee Holtham D2. Joe Miller 140, Holtham 140, Williams 100 doing most of the work for Hyenas, Peter Ayres replying with a ton. Miller added a further ton in the first doubles, partner Williams 140 for Miller to complete the leg. Ray Sanderson 100 countered for Porters in the next, but it wasn't enough, Andy Brooker 114 and D16 made it 0-5. An impressive sixth leg, saw Brian Nash 100 and D2, partner Hayes 140 and 134 to set up Nash's finish. Miller 100 and D2 made it 1-6 at the expense of Yvonne Rouffignac. Captain Williams D15 ensured both points and a flattering 1-7 scoreline. Sanderson 140 and D2 saw off the challenge from Smith as did Ayres 2 x 100 and D20. Geoff Harvey D10 and Holtham D10 completed the match. Harvey was a trifle fortunate in his game as Nash hit the required D16 only for it to fall out before he could retrieve it. John Walker hit a fine 16 darter against the Hunks recently which was overlooked in copy. Scores were 140,85,55,81,130, D5. Exite Radio merit table nominations Team: Pint Depot Kings, Hub Meerkats, Hattons Hunks Girls: Bliss Wright, Irene Russell, Ann Griffiths, Lorraine Cox Boys: Pat Abrams, Ray Harvey, Paul Dowinton, Eddie Bendelow, John Eyre, Gary Minor, John Walker, Joe Miller, Jay Sharp Listen to darts chit chat with Kevin Reardon and Paul Durrant on Exite Radio 89.2 and 93.1FM on Saturday afternoons between 3 and 4 p.m. Paul Durrant, League Chairman

TMGS MATCH REPORT FOR EL PLANTIO 18 DECEMBER We paid a visit to out actual “home course” today and despite the obvious hard work they have carried out, the course is still in a fairly bad shape, albeit it was just about playable amid all the sand on the greens. There was evidence of the ground staff still working away to try to improve this delightful and slightly tasking course and we do hope that they are successful. The course once again bared its teeth for many and not one member broke or even achieved their handicap and in fact it only took 26 points for Jenny Morris to claim 4th spot in the Silver Division one point behind Pearl Sabine and John Hillier in 3rd and 2nd spot. 32 points was enough to welcome back Shelia Dean to the Winners rostrum again! The Gold division scores weren’t much better and 28 points was enough for Mick Kennedy to claim the 4th spot, one point behind John Eyre on 29 for 3rd. Dag Lovas narrowly lost out on the winners slot with 32 points and 33 points was enough for Paula Hagart to take the Gold Division. We believe that is a first for TMGS, both Division winning slots taken by our Female members, well done ladies! No, I will NOT mention anything about the Red Tees being some 100 yards ahead of the Yellows, which would only sound like sour grapes on the male part!! Serious though, well done ladies.
Only 2 of the 4 NTP’s were claimed and that was by Ernie Wilson and John Eyre who also claimed a sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels for that feat. Photo is the Silver Category Winners Our next game, Wednesday 27th December 2013, see’s us at the Villamartin golf course, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Fixture Secretary on 966719604.

We welcomed back several of our regulars who had flown over from England just to attend our Christmas special at Las Ramblas followed by the annual Christmas Dinner. The course was unfamiliar to many of our members so scoring proved difficult for many although the course was in good condition with surprisingly slow greens which added to the problems faced. As well as an individual stableford competition we played a team waltz with players arranged in teams by handicap. The results on the day were: Nearest the pin on hole 6 and hole 10 was John Porter Nearest the pin on hole 15 and hole5 in 2 was Stewart Coleman Longest Drive on hole 18 was Len Matthews Winner on 36 points was Martin Cunningham Runner up on count back with 29 points was John Porter who just pipped Mick Jackson. The waltz competition was won by the team of: Tommy Clarke, Stewart Coleman, Mark Taylor and Leigh Bryant with 71 points with the team of Rob Cowley, Martin Cunningham, Colin Agar and Len Matthews coming second with 70 points. In the evening we gathered at Clarkes Bar for our annual Christmas Dinner and annual presentations which were dominated by Tommy Clarke who won the golfer of the year and most nearest the pin awards. Charlie Rodgers won the nearest the pin in 2 award and Mark Taylor won the Most Improved Player Award. Due to Christmas the next meeting will be on Friday 27th at Corvera check in the bar for timings.

Nearest the pins went to: Hole 3 - no winner, Hole 9 & 17 - Colin Griffiths, Hole 15 - Christine Akers. Many congratulations to all our winners on the day. LEADER ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF ADVERTISING HOTLINE
Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Prober Probertt of Costa Blanca Green Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run competitions. Year End Reflection Time The end of the year is a good time to take stock of your golf game particularly a sort of mental game MOT. Here are just a few mental game reminders to help you with your game when things start to go wrong. 1. Think about the shot that you have got next – forget the last bad shot and focus on the next one by thinking about what can and can’t be done therefore filling your mind with positive thoughts rather than negative one’s about the bad shot. 2. Be careful about who you take advise from – golfers are too ready to take advice from anyone but with the average male handicap of 16.4 wouldn’t you be better listening to someone who really knows? 3. Attitude is everything – this is extremely important because it keeps you in the right frame of mind and helps you to save shots. 4. Control your bad temper with a baby’s dummy – carry this in your golf bag and promise yourself that if you ’ lose it’ on the golf course, you will take it out of the bag and suck it for the whole of the next hole and the feeling of absurdity will stop you losing your temper on the golf course again. 5. Never give up and stay hopeful to the end – always try your best on each shot and remain optimistic because you never know when the next run of birdies and good shots is around the corner. 6. Keep it simple – the less you think about what you do when playing a shot the better. 7. Set reasonable targets for your ability – do not attempt shots that you do not have the ability to achieve because it will only end in frustration. 8. Believe in yourself – if you do not who will? 9. Be set to play – if you are not 100% comfortable over the ball then walk away and re-compose yourself and this will save you many shots. 10. Be a modest golfer – because you will face victory and defeat in almost equal measure. 11. Always have fun and enjoy yourself – it is too easy to get caught up in how well or badly that you are playing and it is essential that you look forward to the next shot or game and when this feeling has gone take a break until you feel that you are raring to go again. Remember that 80% of good shot making is down to the basics of posture, grip and alignment but if you do not have the correct mental approach to the game of golf you will prevent your automatic swing working in pressure situations. This was our last game of the season and what a good day it was. The 34 members travelled the short distance to Vistabella at first light for an early tee off. Everyone was in festive spirit from the onset with Santa outfits Elf outfits and a marvellous array of hats, ranging from the devil with horns that lit up, to Santa falling head first down the chimney, to even a turkey ready for the oven. The day continued in San Miguel Bowls Club raised 405 Euro to purchase food good spirits, with many a ribald comment on the first tee. A four man scramble was the format of the day so no pressure then, well almost, for the needy families in San Miguel de la Salinas especially when your teams tee shots have done a bomb burst to all corners of the course. Santa had a few moments of tribulation when his sleeves keep coming down to his finger tips, his trousers splitting and his beard kept going into his mouth and eventually ended up For their December meeting on the 20th Bull Flanagan visited the popflowing down his back. The group returned to the Bull Flanagan where Chris Stott and his staff provided a tasty mixed choice of sandwiches and mince pies along with a warming bowl of chicken and vegetable soup. Through the Captain members thanked Chris and the staff in the normal manner and presented the prize for best Santa outfit to Bill Fantom. It was a little disappointing that more members did not make the effort to take part in the Santa fancy dress challenge. Many thanks to Pablo for the voucher which will be auctioned at the Society dinner on 21st December in aid of the Charity group ‘Charity for Charities’. Next meeting is at Font de Llop on 17th January and members should check the web site for details. EMERALD ISLE BOWLS By Bill Allen On Thursday, 12 December, we had our 3-monthly 'Arthur Clark Trophy' game, changing rinks 3 x 6, and after that the biggest shot difference and Trophy went to Marilyn Shatwell. Friday 13th saw our last Claymores home game against Quesada - top of the league and with Winter League bowlers, we expected a hard game. We rose to the challenge and pulled off a good win, 9 points to their 5 and 108 shots to 91. We all had smiles on our faces to end our pre-Christmas games. Also on the 13th the Cavaliers completed their pre-Christmas games at home to La Marina Seagulls. A close game but the Cavaliers got home to continue their excellent form, winning on 4 rinks and with a shot difference of 101 to 86, giving them a victory of 10 points to 2 - a nice win to end the year. Sunday, 15 December, was the final day of our internal Christmas competitions. Christmas dress and party hats added to the last two matches, followed by a raffle and a dinner in the evening. The Club Captain won the competitions and also walked away with 5 raffle prizes, along with Frank King - mind you, they did spend a fortune on tickets. Hopefully they weren't mugged on the way home with their haul! Once again, a Merry Christmas to all.

COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB By Lynne Bishop On behalf of everyone at Country Bowls Club I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our bowling friends and everyone at the Leader a very happy Christmas and good health for 2014. Apologies for the late report on the last two weeks matches of the year, the results weren't very thrilling but our new years resolution should be to try a bit harder! Southern League Ramblers played an afternoon game at VistaBella against their Lanzadores picking up four points, at one stage of the game five teams led the way but only two came away with the points. Jenny Chaplin, Charlie Watkins & Dave Chaplin came from behind for a well deserved win of 21-16 and Andy White, Sue & Barry Norris kept ahead all the way for another good win 15-12. Overall shots, Ramblers 86(4) 111(10) Lanzadores. Friday 13th Dec the Ramblers had an early start up the N332 to play La Marina Sharks, the result from that game doesn't give me much to write about, Del Gunning, Harold Morris & Gerry Gough were the only ones that did the business winning 21-16 well done guys. Overall shots, Ramblers 75 (2) - 116 (12) Sharks. In The SABA Enterprise League our little bunch of starship troopers, under the watchful eye of Captain (Karen) Kirk experienced a rough voyage when they dropped in at Quesada to play their Pearls, finding themselves a little bit out of their depth they crashed to earth with a 1-13 defeat. The team of Glynis Broadhurst, Carol Donnellan & Denis Birkett saved the day from a whitewash with a 17-17 draw. Beam em up Scottie! Last week they were on home ground but they didn't better their result, playing the Greenland's Maples they once again managed just one drawn game, this time it was the trio of Jo & John Wright and Dot Davies that picked up the point 18-18. Not good results but you are the strongest team in the league holding the others up! Our Christmas Muftie fun day went very well, there was some wonderful costumes, lots of fun on the green with prizes to be won. A very nice Christmas lunch was served by Linda Grainger and her staff, then finishing the day with the draw of our big Xmas raffle. A big thank you to Sue & Barry Norris and everyone else who contributed in making it a most enjoyable day. For info about Country Bowls Club please Tel. Portico Mar hosted this years GBC Xmas function, attended by many members and guests. As usual, it was enjoyed by one and all, who sung/danced along to Woody, having enjoyed the excellent cuisine on offer. Many thanks to organisers Jill Collins and Helen Langlois, for all their hard work in making this an event to remember. Cedars kept up their recent good run in Southern League div 2, as they won on 5 rinks and secured O/S, in their 12-2 home victory over San Miguel Cougars. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB On Monday The Pintos entertained Quesada Diamonds. A few struggled for a while to find line and length on the fast mat, but the home team will have the advantage on any carpet. In the end Pintos took 3 rinks to Diamonds’ 2 with the other drawn. Pintos also took the total shots by a comfortable margin. Congratulations to June Whitworth, Jim Gracie and skip Jane Hamill, on achieving a hotshot. Meanwhile The Broncos were playing at Greenlands against the Sycamores and despite good play The Sycamores took the day on all rinks. Friday morning found The Mustangs travelling to Montemar to play The Matadors, a very tough opponent. There was good play from both teams, but Matadors took the day with all the points. Margaret Odell, John Newell and Ron Odell 14-22. Brian Taylor, Carol Smith and Mike Smith 13-21. Anne Stone, Irene Mangan and Alex Morrice 1521. Ros Holmes, Jim Gracie and Stew Hamill 15-26. June Whitworth, John Skipper and Jane Hamill 12-25. Marianne Holtham, Mike Stone and David Whitworth 12-25. Meanwhile The Raiders played host to Montemar Toreadors in a very tight match and great company. Ill health and absent players made the task of fielding a full team difficult for the captain, but he came through. Raiders took 2 of the rinks and the overall shots by one. Ann Day, Graham Day and Rod Wright 12-22. Maxine Wright, Tony Robinson and Malc Sykes 17-18. John Cleal, Mick Ager and Malc Elmore 23-16. Tricia Elsam, Edward Elsam and Shirley Edwards 1222. Carol Taylor, Robin Clark and Margaret Wright 14-20. Terry Buswell, Ron Edwards and Gary Newson 28-7. Spons by Caser. For info Irene Mangan 966717700 or Marianne Holtham on 966 77 2222.
HORADADA BOWLS CLUB By Barry Evans The last report of the year unfortunately does not make very good reading for our members as far as results are concerned. Our last two Friday matches resulted in defeats. On Friday 6th Dec. we were away at La Marina and were heavily defeated by 74 shots to 135 resulting in zero points. Only the rinks skipped by Brian Guppy and Mick Blunt put up any sort of resistance going down by 3 and 4 shots respectively. The least said about the remaining rinks the better. On Friday 13th Dec. we were at home against high flying San Luis Lions. At least in this game we put up some sort of fight going down by 89 shots to 108 and gaining 4 points. Well done to our winning rinks of John Wilson, Len Chance and Mick Blunt 16 – 12,and to Maureen Semper, Alan Pugh and Barry Evans 18 – 11.Our rink led by John Hurlock led all through the game only to be pipped on the very last end and our rink led by Terry Hucknall gave a very strong San Luis rink led by Keith Jones a good run for their money. On the middle Monday we played at home in the SABA league against the league leaders Vistabella. It was very much the same story as for the Friday games and we only gained 4 points going down by 93 shots to 110.Well done to our winning rinks of Yvonne Hurlock,John Goddard and John Hurlock 20 – 2 and Fred Trigwell, Alf Woodhouse and Ray Hartley 19 – 14.Again another hard luck story for the rink of Vince Skeel, Jeff Hier and Bill Stanaway who lost by 1 shot in a low scoring game. While recent results have not been in our favour we must not get down hearted and make every effort next year to record more wins. On a good note we can at least put up a good performance in social functions! Our Xmas event last Saturday was well attended and enjoyed by all. Thanks must go to all those who organised the event, [I wont name names as I am sure to leave someone out], and to our entertainer Angie who’s tribute to Cher was much appreciated by at least the men! Finally may I wish all members a good Xmas and a happy New Year.

DOUBLE DOMESTIC DEFEATS FOR ELCHE ELCHE CF ..0 VILLARREAL ...1 (Tuesday 17 December - Copa del Rey)
ELCHE CF ..0 MALAGA ...1 (Friday 20 December - La Liga) In the space of four days Elche sadly lost
BY JOHN two home games, the first booted out of the MCGREGOR Copy del Rey, Spain’s equivalent of the FA
Cup, the second more worryingly in La Liga where Elche’s reasonable start to the their first season back in the big league is beginning to trail off, the Franjiverdes third defeat in a row. In the largely unimportant Copa del Rey Elche took the opportunity to give some of their reserves a run out: goalkeeper Tono in place of ever-present last year Manu Herrrera, Romanian full back Christian Sapuranu for Damian Suarez and Cisma for Albacar at left back. Last year’s club captain David Generelo had his first outing alongside another ex-regular Rivera, chance with Aaron and new boy Christian up front. In truth, the less said about the actual game is best: Elche were awful for most of the game, with very few chances created. Villarreal scored easily in the 65th minute and Elche never looked capable of replying, Coro is thwarted by the former Elche keeper Willy www.elchecf.es
despite bringing on Coro, Carles Gil and Boakye up front, but it made little difference by the end. Four days later, and last year’s Champions League semi-finalists Malaga came to the mighty Martinez Valero, the match important as both teams were locked in mid table of 17 points. Elche fielded arguably their best team, and warm applause was given to returning goalkeeper Willy Caballero of Malaga who has become the Andalucian club’s stalwart now for four years after seven excellent years with Elche. 19,750 enthusiastic local loyal fans attended on a damp evening, hopefully to see Elche get back to much-needed winning ways. Malaga were ahead after only six minutes, a long free kick finding Camacho who glanced his header just inside the post giving Tono no chance. Elche now have a strange new ploy, where after 10 minutes a video replay of their recent goals are flashed up on the giant screens, usually having the desired effect of stirring the crowd uo to applaud warmly. The problem is when they are not playing well, like at the moment this can be extremely irritating and distracting, as are the endless plays across the back four resulting in full backs Suarez and Albacar suddenly seemingly responsible for attacking initiatives down the flanks that the midfield of Ruben Perez, Carlos Sanchez and Carles Gil appear incapable of providing. Bookings abounded from both sides, with the home team looking inept in the first half, but at least showing more purpose early in the second, and not before time. However, on the hour the Franjiverdes best player, right back Damian Suarez was sent off for a second foul, and with him seemingly all chance of getting back into the game went too. A defensive substitution to cover for the departed Argentinian made matters worse, and in the end the dejected crowd departed home with muttered worries for the future. Yes, Elche are still fourteenth, but alarmingly only two points above Osasuna third from bottom. The traditional Christmas and New Year break will give Elche time to think and regroup, but as their first game in 2014 is away to Barcelona where little could be expected, it is winnable games lost like Malaga and last time out away to Levante which are most of concern if Elche are to stay up in this very competitive league. Can the Franjiverdes do it? Yes, they’ve shown they can earlier this season, so let’s hope it’s a Happy New Year in the City of Palms! Mucho Elche!

MIL PALMERAS WEEKLY ROUNDUP
MIL PALMERAS 0 BENFERI 7
Pre benjamin 2006 sponsored by Sunshine FM The scoreline is very harsh as Mil Palmeras flew out of the blocks pushing top of the table Benferri all the way with the defence not only keeping them out but we were defending cleanly with well timed tackles going in and clearances being made time and again. Superbly marshalled by Makenna with Elliot and Millie working really hard alongside her. While the defence were keeping Benferri out the midfield were causing them all kinds of problems going close on several occasions with Garry Mason and the outstanding Dylan fighting all the way through. Allowing Lacey to plow a lone furrow up top. Josh was much improved today running taking over from lacey impressively. Benferri only took the lead through a very fortunate deflection when there was really no threat of a goal at all. But the toros battled back and were unfortunate to go in 2-0 down at the break. Unfortunately the relentless work ethic took its toll in the second half as Mil Palmeras just simply ran out of steam and Benferri took advantage of this ruthlessly helping themselves to 5 second half goals flattering the scoreline dramatically. It was a shame really as the toros deserved more from this seasons best performance. Man of the match Kirill Polyanskiy a superb goalkeeping performance. CF Mil Palmeras Alevines Sponsored by Talleres J Martinez MIL PALMERAS 4 URYULA 1 Yet again team work and pure determination not to let each other down gave the Toros the platform needed to go on and win the match. Uryula who were unbeaten this season showed their strength from the whistle but the Toros combo of Bailey and Oliver in the center backed up by Neve , Aron &
Mingus time and again cut down Uryula's attacks giving Luca in goal a quiet half .Although Ben ,Liam ,Alex & Luke counter attacked and created plenty of chances, it took until the 22nd Minute before Luke found Oliver on the edge of the box to slot the ball home.Turning the pressure on the Toros kept Uryula pinned back with Ben then Liam adding to the score line to make it 3-0 at half time . Second half was more of the same with Luke getting on the score sheet early on. As the match went on the tackles and shoves got more determined . Uryula got a freekick on the edge of the Toros penalty area which was saved off the line only for Uryula to follow up first and grab a goal . With just under 10 mins to go the Toros took stock and kept Uryula at bay to take the win 4-1. Outstanding performance from all the team. Player of the Match Oliver Godden, determined and true team player.
