It promised to be bigger and better and it didn´t disappoint, the 2014 Medieval Market on the streets of Orihuela was the most successful ever, with hundreds of thousands of visitors, tourists and residents alike, taking a trip back in time through the historic city streets.

In a dramatic and theatrical style, the opening procession meandered the lanes, led by knights on horseback, followed by their standard bearers, their servants and belly dancers, as well as jugglers, musicians and street performers, before the councillor for festivities, Carolina Gracia, delivered her speech, welcoming, “all who are willing and able to hear, see and understand”, taking them on a verbal journey through the imagined history of the event, addressing “Young men and women of spirit and body, Nobles, Clergy and people”, explaining how the Medieval

Market of Orihuela is representative of the “fairs and markets held from today until the dawn of the day of San Blas, when the main streets and squares of Orihuela, land of Moors, Christians, Jews and many others, in peace and harmony want to be”.

Prior to the opening address, the onlookers were treated to a variety of staged shows, with the horses dancing and traditional music playing, before the street theatre actors transformed the cobbles and tarmac into a stage for their presentation. With audience participation and joy on the faces of those watching clear, the Municipal Mayor, Monserate Guillén, officially declared the event open.

With a total of 151 different shows and performances running throughout the weekend, including parades, dance, theatre, exhibitions and musical performances, there was hardly any time for the cast of the show to rest, tirelessly working to maintain the reputation of the event as one of the biggest and best in Europe.

Over 90 members and friends of the Orihuela Costa and District RBL had a great night on Saturday 25 January 2014 when they held a Burns Night at Alfies Place in La Zenia.

The haggis was carried in by the Vice Chairman Eddie Coleman with the sound of the pipes played by Barry Waddington. The address to the haggis was given by the Scottish dancer Mark McMillan. Both are from the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums Band.

The meal was enjoyed by everyone followed by a speech to ladies by Peter Breen and a response from Joan Waddington. Dancing was then carried over to the sound of the group The Rockits. A raffle was held which raised over

WORLD CANCER DAY Tuesday 4th February 2014 is World Cancer Day and the day will be marked by Maria and the Pink Ladies in conjunction with Zenia Boulevard, the management at Zenia Boulevard have decided to recognise this day once again with Maria and her Pink Ladies at the Boulevard for the benefit of the AECC, the Spanish cancer charity.

Maria has arranged for a number of the top entertainers on the Costa Blanca to perform a live set on the centres stage from 12.30 pm to approximately 6.00pm. The day will start with a minutes silence to commemorate those who have lost the fight to this heinous disease, this will take place in the main area in front of the stage. After the minutes silence then there will be live entertainment for all those who attend. There will also be a chance to book an early screening mammogram or cervical test for ladies and a prostate test for

the gentlemen; Maria and the Pink Ladies will be on hand to take your details and book the relevant test, these tests are free although a small donation will be gratefully received to help to finance the early screening program.

Many entertainers will once again be donating their time free of charge for the benefit of the AECC. All money raised on the day will be donated to the AECC to help fund their early screening program and towards research into a cure for ALL cancers.

‘LA REGIA' FOOTBRIDGE NEARS COMPLETION

La Regia residents can’t but fail to have noticed the work that has been going on for the last few weeks on the construction of the new footbridge at km 50 on the N332, particularly as it nears completion.

At a cost of 231,900 euro the bridge has been a long time demand of residents residing on the inland side of the road at the southern end of ‘Cabo Roig strip’ who complain of isolation.

There have been regular protests at the long, but necessary, journeys needing to be made on foot in order to take advantage of the basic facilities available on the coastal side of the road, especially from the sick or injured, many of them in advancing years, when needing to use the services at the local medical centre.

For many the installation of the new footbridge will cut their journey distance by about a mile.

The project is being managed by Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer who has long promised the new footbridge. In November she outlined the timetable for its installation which is pretty much on schedule. With the arrival on Monday of the final pieces of the overhead bridge the installation could be completed by the beginning of March.

The main superstructure itself was erected in a single section, so as to avoid the lengthy process of assembly on the La Regia site.

Over the last three months engineers have built and installed the pillars that will hold and support the bridge in place. When all the elements are in place for the final assembly a large crane will be brought in to handle the most complicated aspect of the operation, the installation of the footbridge itself that will span across the N332, something that is likely to be performed overnight so as to avoid major disruption and traffic jams.

GOVERNMENT REJECTS 49 CLEMENCY REQUESTS FOR CORRUPTION One of the requests scheduled to be heard in the coming weeks is that of the former mayor of Torrevieja , Pedro Hernández Mateo

ariano Rajoy's government says that it has rejected a total of 49 clemency petitions during 2013 for crimes of corruption by individuals against the Public Administration reiterating the need for sentences to be carried out if justice is to be achieved.

The answer was given in response to a question submitted by the national spokesperson for the Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD), Rosa Díez, who wanted to know the reasons that led to a government to pardon on 3 September for Maria Dolores Sánchez Mateos who had previously

been sentenced to three years in prison for the embezzlement of public goods.

Dna Dolores Sánchez Mateos, was a member of the PSOE leadership in Seville and a regional Socialist deputy in Andalusia.

Díez demanded to know the reasons for the act of clemency saying that in this case justice had not been served and that it was not in the public interest to grant such a pardon. She asked whether such pardons are "compatible" with Government talk of democratic regeneration in the fight against corruption.

The Government spokesperson said that in the case of clemency many factors are considered,

most notably the absence of criminal and police records.

He reiterated that clemency is not a waiver of the seriousness of the offenses, or their importance or any dilution of the social criticism that they deserve.

He also said that on the table during the next few weeks are a number of clemency requests for this type of crime, one from a former minister as well as that from the former mayor of Torrevieja , Pedro Hernández Mateo, and the former president of Sevilla FC, José María del Nido, which has been endorsed by many La Liga clubs.

DRAMA AT PLENARY AND SURFERS ON THE BEACH This week´s plenary meeting in Orihuela met with an initial 30 minute delay, after the Mayor of the municipality, Monserate Guillén, refused to allow Pedro Mancebo to raise a number of points relating to the N332 roundabout closure. According to Guillén, Mancebo did not have the right to raise the issues in the manner he attempted, as he is not part of an assigned municipal group, following his ejection recently, and the questions over the legality of the censure motion, for which a preliminary statement is expected on the 6th of February. A member of the public was also escorted from the hall by the police, after apparently refusing to remain quiet as a protest, despite the requests of the Mayor.

Two main points of national interest were presented by the governing board at the meeting, one for supporting evictees who have lost their home, the other relating to the change in the laws governing abortion. Both of these notions were objected to by the PP and Pedro Mancebo, who later tabled their own version of the same motion. One of the most significant oppositions was a demand to include a clause which “supports” the actions of the central government, whilst creating a committee which would be chaired by a local PP member. A group of protesters who had gathered outside the town hall to raise awareness of those suffering repossession and eviction were said to be “bemused” by what had happened, with a representative of the group saying that “we are just being used as a political football”.

The councillor for social welfare, Emilio Zaplana, has announced that a long halted development of social housing for the elderly will become available in a matter weeks. The properties, which are located near to the Villamartin golf course, have been standing vacant for many years, but the final stages of an agreement between the commercial promoter and the town hall over shares in revenue looks set to be made, resulting in the homes becoming available to move into, and a new community of senior citizens, becoming a reality. However, the administration of the building is not quite as simple as might be hoped, after numerous documents seem to be missing and there are discrepancies over agreements made during the previous government´s term in office.

Surfers look set to take to the waves of La Zenia beach, after the councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, announced plans to change the municipal regulation which ban water sports, so as to allow surfing during certain times of day, during the offpeak season. Although many surfers have used the beaches of

Orihuela for some years, the practice is currently illegal, a situation highlighted recently when a group of surfers rescued and saved a man who was drowning in the sea. This matter was seen to strengthen the case for leniency, and the subsequent, soon to be implemented change.

The mayor of Orihuela, Monserate Guillén, and the Councillor for Education, Rosa Martínez, hosted a meeting at the town hall which was attended by some 60 students and teachers who are involved on a Europe wide educational initiative on climate change, known as the Comenius Project. Grants are available from the EU in a program which aims to “bring learning alive for pupils and staff alike”.

Locally, the IES Thader is involved in the project, with Orihuela students joining 34 of their international colleagues from 11 different countries, including Belgium, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Romania, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Estonia and France. After the meeting, the group were taken on a guided tour of the city, delivered in English, as well as visiting numerous sites of local interest, including the Orihuela Costa on Sunday. Students involved in the scheme from Orihuela are already involved in planned trips to Slovakia in September, Italy in March and the Czech Republic in April, amongst other initiatives.

In a special meeting this week, the governing board of Orihuela approved 26 grants of 1,125 euro each, which will be awarded to various companies for hiring local workers through a Joint Employment Plan. The funding will provide work for 26 unemployed people and a third of the budget is financed by the municipality, another third by the Province of Alicante and the rest by the Generalitat Valenciana.

Emilio Zaplana, revealed this week that the not for profit company Ildo had been working for the town hall without a contract, and therefore billed the municipality for jobs completed without the funds being set aside in the budget. The situation has now been resolved by the government team, according to Zaplana, who states that the municipality still owes 727,009.31 euro of unpaid bills from the previous legislature, because of the lack of budget provision, in addition to a debt of 327,000 euro for work done between Jan and May 2011, after they had not been advised that the work had already been contracted to another company in 2010, which was for a four-year contract at a rate of 836,847.98 euro per year, including IVA. Zaplana states that the debts owed to the company, made the position of the company “unsustainable”. Zaplana also states that an agreement has now been reached to clear this historic debt, so that the company which specialises in ensuring work for disabled people could see resolution of the past and hope for the future.

Continued From Page One Although the official figures for this year are still being counted, there is no doubt, given the growth in popularity and awareness of the event, as well as the preferable weather over last year, the 200,000 visitors of 2013 will have been exceeded.

Money well spent considering the budget of 42,000 euro, as it sets Orihuela aside with yet another reason to visit, whether for this event or one of the many others around the cultural calendar.

There is no doubt either of the professionalism of the company awarded the contract, La Asociación Cultural Destellos, a theatrical company founded in 1986 that works with the PirámideArt of Alicante and with the support of an international street theatre group, the Festival Internacional de Teatro en la Calle, or FITEC, as, despite being the only bidder, it is clear that every single person involved will do anything and everything possible to ensure the success of the event.

As Gracia´s speech concluded, it genuinely was “time to laugh, to love, to eat, drink and frolic , it's time for the joy of everyone forgetting the quarrels and disputes , which often give little pleasure”, and those disputes and quarrels were a record of history, as everybody came together as one, enjoying the fruits of the Orihuela Medieval Market, 2014.

AIRPOR T BUS INTEREST STILL GROWING SLOWLY

The express bus service between Torrevieja and Alicante-Elche airport carried 72,049 passengers in 2013, a favourable increase of 39.5% over 2012, but still considerably below the 100,000 anticipated annual passengers estimated when the service was launched in 2011.

The data has been published by the bus operator this week, revealing that the average daily passenger use was 197 per day, compared to 141 per day in 2012. More passengers began their journey at the airport end of the line, with 37,806 passengers joining at the terminal, as opposed to 34,243 who used the bus from Torrevieja.

July proved the most successful month, when a total of 9,473 passengers used the service, in August the figure was slightly lower with 9,126, the two months combined being accountable for 25% of the entire year´s passengers, with 18,599 collectively.

Departing Torrevieja on the odd hours between 07:00 and 21:00, returning from the airport on the even hours between 08:00 and 22:00, the cost of 6.92 euro is considerably cheaper than alternative travel options, with officially licensed taxis charging between 45 and 50 euro, depending on the time of day.

The data coincides with the announcement of a similar service due to be launched between Torrevieja and the high speed train network, although final details of that route are still to be confirmed.

QUESTIONS OVER 18,000 EURO TORREVIEJA VIDEO The tourism department of Torrevieja town hall has come under fire again for wasting money this week, after the Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, bragged about the promotion of the city at the FITUR tourism event only cost a total of 6,000 euro.

The criticism has only just come to light after the mayor seemingly forgot to mention the 18,000 euro spent on the promotional video used at the event.

The 4 minute and 23 second long video features a variety of moving camera images, as well as aerial shots, all intended to tantalise the viewer into wanting to visit the city of salt.

From the disused railway line to the harbour wall, via the industrial salt factory, the idea of a “Paradise at your fingertips” is the overwhelming theme of the video presentation.

But the 6,000 euro quote suddenly becoming 24,000 euro may not end there, and questions are set to be asked over the actual cost of the film, as it was commissioned for recording over a year ago, and faced a re-edit to include events such as the carnival, Easter parades and May fair, which may or may not have been included in the original budget.

According to the councillor for tourism, Luis María Pizana, the cost of the production includes ownership of the images, and the video has become increasingly popular since the cost was mentioned, perhaps as the tax payers see what their money has been spent on.

Mick had all his long golden locks cut off with the purpose of raising money for the charity Reach Out. As yet the amount raised has to be collected and counted from those who have sponsored him.

And there was a further surprise for Mick when Keith Carter, Chairman of The Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion, presented a trophy to Mick in recognition of his fund-raising and organisational skills within the golfing fraternity in raising over €5,000 towards the 2013 RBL Poppy Appeal.

TRAFFICO OFFICERS ‘ASKED’ NOT TO USE MOBILES The directorate of the Guardia Civil has issued an internal notice stating that the DGT traffic department insist that serving officers must not use their mobile phone whilst driving, as it “gives a bad image”.

Numerous pictures have appeared on internet sites of police officers using their mobiles whilst driving, a legally permitted function for them, as long as it is in line with their duties.

However, given that they now actively enforce the law that carries a 200 euro fine and the loss of three penalty points, it is considered that they must now “lead by example”.

The internal memo, dated January the 23rd, that was sent to the 8,700 patrol officers, prohibits “the use of private mobile phone and its applications in service, unless timely, exceptional or in emergency situations”.

Although not currently enforceable under law, it is seen as an interim compromise whereas if the officers comply and the image of the corps improves, then there would be no further action needed. The DGT have not ruled out presenting a notion in the future to apply the rule as

law.

A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil said that, “Mobile phone use is widespread in our society and you cannot prohibit officers from carrying them at work, all that can be asked is that the exercise logic and reasonable use of it”.

Referring to the perceived negative image that the public has, a DGT spokesperson said that that images caught on camera are “isolated cases, and are not general practice. They have, therefore, chosen to “issue this kind of notice before any abusive behaviour degenerates into a disciplinary sanction”.

In addition to the use of mobile phones when driving and on duty, the memo also prevents officers from using their personal mobiles for official business and communication. Applications such as WhatsApp have been shown to be of significant benefit to law enforcement and public safety, even attributing numerous life saving operations to the app, but “these communications must be made through official technical means to ensure their effectiveness and confidentiality”, it states.

One of the principle unions representing the Guardia Civil say that they “do not understand” the reason for the memo, considering that they are “another tool in our work, especially in the XXI century”, which have proven vital “especially in small units, with more limited means, as many officers use their mobile phone to check the weather, for example, key to road safety”.

A second union group however said that it is “just a general warning not be abuse the system”, and that they understand that the mobile can be an element of distraction but also remember that many agents use them for their duties.

GUARDIA CIVIL BARRACKS RAMMED A 55 year old male was arrested this weekend after seemingly intentionally driving his car into the front of the Guardia Civil barracks at Aspe.

The incident occurred at around 2 in the morning, after the person had been reportedly involved in an altercation at the town´s health centre.

The man is then believed to have driven to the barracks in his car, crashing against the door post, allegedly on purpose.

A “heated” discussion several Guardia Civil officers then followed, resulting in the man being arrested.

The man suffered minor injuries in the accident, and therefore was taken to the Hospital in Elche, where he was treated whilst under arrest.

The Guardia Civil confirmed that an altercation had taken place and a person was arrested, unable to comment further, other than to confirm that no officers were injured during the incident.

SPANISH POLICE INVESTIGATE USE OF GOOGLE GLASSES The Directorate General of Police in Spain are exploring the potential operational use of Google Glasses for police patrols.

In addition to being used by both regular and scientific investigating officers, the advanced eyewear would assist in recognition, recording and collating evidence in visual inspections, viewing live cameras and security monitors, video capture and facial recognition, as well as information about the location of other police units and support services.

The glasses could also integrate with facial recognition systems, data verification and exchange with other patrols, access to police databases and management systems, vehicle checks, police records, and other supporting documentary evidence and procedural rules and protocols, among others.

Although it might seem like a futuristic development from a science fiction novel, the technology is available today. Whereas some are worried about the security and privacy implications of glasses that can record your every move, the use for law enforcement, safety and protection is something the Spanish authorities are keen to explore.

At a presentation, the Director of the police, Ignacio Cosidó, said that he has been interested in research and operational advantages that bring the incorporation of Google Glass under the Strategic Plan of the Police Corps, intended to transform real smart security elements as part of a plane named “Policía 3.0”.

The project aims are for a model of safety management and qualityoriented optimization in the allocation of human, material and financial resources, according to a statement, calling for the efficient management of materials and progressive adaptation to the demands of renewable infrastructure, adaptation and modernization to meet the needs of modern policing.

NEW ABANDONED PATROL CAR FOR CREVILLENT POLICE The Local Police in Crevillent have been presented with a new patrol car this week, which has been adapted for their use after it was discovered abandoned on one of their roads.

Councillor for the Police and Traffic, Manuel Moya of the ruling Partido Popular, explained during a presentation of the vehicle how it has cost 6,369.46 euro to repair and adapt the vehicle, and emphasised the importance of town halls managing municipal resources with integrity and effectiveness, whilst taking into account the needs of municipal services, especially the local police, during these financially restrictive times.

The SEAT Ibiza is a car, which has number plates indicating May 2006 as its first registration date, required ??some repairs such as replacing tyres and the battery, as well as the installation of emergency lights and siren, flashlights, cones, and other police equipment, as well as the documentary legalization and ITV. Town halls are allowed to commandeer abandoned vehicles in this way, but only for the purpose of use by law enforcement agencies in their patrols, surveillance and traffic control, as an alternative mechanism to the destruction and decontamination of the vehicle.

A similar situation was brought to light in Orihuela in May of last year, when the previous owner of a Range Rover car spotted his vehicle in Police livery, after that car had been impounded in 2009.

Whereas in November of last year, we also reported how Torrevieja town hall had spent nearly three quarters of a million euro on 17 new police vehicles, most of which can still be frequently seen parked idle in the grounds of the police station.

THE UNHEALTHY EXPAT I have just returned from a wonderful two weeks in the UK. As usual, it was good to meet up with family and friends once again, as well as doing a little shopping in some of our favourite stores to buy a few of those special treats that most expats crave for.

However, I also managed to pick up an unpleasant virus that meant I had to spend two days in bed in a hotel bedroom. It was all so frustrating.

I know exactly how it happened.

The young man sitting in the seat in front of us on the crowded train from Gatwick Airport into London was coughing and spluttering. It was when he received a phone call from his mum and he informed her that he was on his way to the hospital that alarm bells rang. Yes, I

know exactly where this particular bug came from.

As soon as I arrived home I made an appointment to see my doctor.

We have a wonderful, yet small, health centre in our village. It is nearly always possible to make an appointment to see a doctor the following day, and appointments are efficiently made on the Internet.

After examination I was diagnosed with a chest infection, given antibiotics, and plugged into a nebuliser that helped my breathing.

It is rare that I am ill, and I am not aware of any underlying health conditions. However, my doctor made the point that a rapid drop in temperature may have contributed to the problem. After all, it had been 36 degrees on the day that I had left Gran Canaria and ten degrees when we arrived in London. I had always assumed that wearing thermals, wrapping up well and wearing gloves and a hat would be all that is needed to deal with the colder climate, but apparently it is not.

A small-scale investigation of friends who have previously lived in Southern Spain, Portugal, France and the Canary Islands revealed that many now suffer from respiratory conditions, which began after their return to the UK, even though they were perfectly healthy when they lived in a warmer climate. One couple revealed to me that their UK doctor had warned them that the body takes a long time to adjust from a warm climate to a much cooler one, and that with some people the adjustment may never take place, particularly in older people. A cheery thought.

This is an area that I have not considered before, and I suspect very

few expats have either. Maybe this is something that intending expats should consider when dreaming of a life in warmer climates upon retirement? If it is their intention to return to the UK at a later time, the adjustment may be difficult and cause additional health problems.

I also suspect that little research has been carried out in this area.

Maybe it is an ideal subject for a PhD thesis for a medical student?

Meanwhile, I am relieved to be home again and as soon as I get these pills and potions out of the way, I can resume my life in the sun.

WHY LOCAL ELECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU! any Europeans who have made their homes in Spain feel strongly about their rights to vote in national and local elections of their home countries. Petitions have been made to Europe to extend the rights of British citizens for their right to vote in UK elections to be indefinite, irrespective of the time people have been living outside the United Kingdom.

Whilst many people who emigrate to other countries still have strong ties to the UK, especially in respect to taxation and pensions, many political decisions made in Westminster have virtually no consequence to the daily lives of people who have made their homes in Spain.

In contrast to the emotions shown about the rights to vote in UK elections many expats living in Spain are totally apathetic about their rights to vote in Spanish local elections. Figures produced by Diputacion de Alicante show that out of the vast British population living in the province only about 10% have actually ensured that their names are entered on the electoral list, how many of these actually vote is unknown.

Many expats are under the misapprehension that Spanish local politics are more or less similar to British local politics. In fact nothing could be further from the truth. All elections in Spain are based on proportional representation, not on elected representatives serving the needs of people living in a particular ward or constituency. Each of the political parties have lists of names, ranked by their political party, this ranking is not made on the popularity to the voters of a particular individual. Names are placed on the lists depending on the ranking the political party gives to the person; this is often determined by the person’s activities within the political party, not their behaviour with constituents. Thus lists of prospective candidates can be composed of people living in one area whilst other huge areas are effectively dis-

enfranchised. This has traditionally been the case on Orihuela Costa.

Traditionally the development, direction and fate of Orihuela Costa has been decided by politicians who have no real knowledge of the area. Planning decisions are made by councillors with no connection to the coast and go totally unchallenged by people who will be directly affected by these decisions. Orihuela councillors appreciate the crucial financial contributions made by coastal residents, the taxes and building licences contribute disproportionally to the coffers of Orihuela. However when it comes to spending the revenue Orihuela Costa always loses out. Council provided services on the coast are

poorer than those provided in small towns of less than 10,000 people, one only needs to compare the town of Montesinos to Orihuela Costa!

This is directly attributable to the fact that Orihuela Costa residents are apathetic to local politics, they fail to get involved, they fail to register to vote and they fail to make their dissatisfaction known through the ballot box.

To ensure that Orihuela Costa receives the services normal in Spain it is important that the large numbers of people from the European Union ensure that they are registered to vote. Check your voting status at the Orihuela Town Hall. Discrimination of the Orihuela Costa will continue as long as expats continue their political apathy. Your community needs your vote.

What is fungal nail infection?

This condition is also known as onychomycosis, and often occurs as a result of nail trauma, be it through a single blow or through repetitive trauma such as running, high heels or restrictive footwear.

This common condition is caused by dermatophytes/spores getting into the nail, upon which it feeds, leading to discolouration and thickening of the nail plate. The nails are often difficult to cut and unsightly. If the onychomycosis is not treated quickly or efficiently the nail bed may become permanently damaged and the infection may spread to other toenails.

Infection is unusual in children but as one gets older the chance of catching a fungal nail infection increases.

The statistics are: Between 40 to 60 years old 15% of the population will acquire it.

Between 60 to 70 years old over 30%.

Over 70 years old there is about 50% infection rate Also people with low immunity, diabetes and HIV are more at risk of catching onychomycosis Fungal nail infection treatment To treat onychomycosis using the state of the art Fotona Nd:YAG Laser. The treatment involves passing laser light over the infected nails and surrounding tissue safely killing the parasitic fungi.

The procedure painlessly heats the nail plate imperceptibly at first but feels warmer towards the end of each nail treatment. No anaesthesia is required for this procedure and your daily routine will remain unaffected.

It provides the most patient-friendly and least-invasive onychomycosis treatment. Laser light also eliminates monotonous applications of often ineffective topical anti-fungal paints and lacquers, and also negates the taking of prescribed oral anti-fungal medication and attendant possible systemic sideeffects such as liver and kidney damage.

Fungal nail infection - posttreatment Toenail growth is slow (approximately 1mm per month, compared to fingernails which grow three times more quickly) and therefore it will be several months before any improvement is seen. A follow-up appointment will be required 4-6 months after the final treatment and progress will be monitored by photographic comparison.

Fungal nail infection - after care treatment In order to prevent reinfection it is important to adhere diligently to a prophylactic regime of antifungal treatment. Round 8 of the winter series, was held on the Sweetwater Canal in Guardamar. It was very sunny with a very cold wind. First on the day was Steve Collins, second was Martin Stratford, third was Derek King and in fourth place John Fielding.

Next week, Round 9, is on the Eden Canal. Pegs at 8 and fishing from 9 till 2. The next Club Quiz night is on 11 Feb at 7.30. Teams of 6 or less can play at 1€ per person. The next Sunday meeting is on 16 Feb, with the Committee meeting at 10 and the General Meeting at 11.

On February 16th there is a Valentines celebration at the bar- 7.00 for 7.30. All are welcome. The cost of a meal with entertainment by Dan Davy is 10€ per person. Any movement that has taken place in the middle is with the Tavern moving above the Kings after their win at Hattons Honeys.

The Kings however, couldn’t muster their recent form when entertaining league leaders Kats. Disappointingly Messrs. Minor, Wright, Fozzard etc failed to find their form of late and offered little resistance to the table toppers. Gary Minor´s explanation of “we are in awe” was of course tongue in cheek, but the anticipated nail biter didn’t materialise. The gap between top and bottom half widened after Porterhouse´s victory, the gap now 6 points, with the lower half fighting for the ¨Breakaways League Plate¨. The league have a new sponsor for the League Plate, Jay Sharp and Sarah Simpson of the Breakaways bar. Gogarty´s move up to 5th place, their highest place in the season, after a last leg victory over the Hunks, whom they replace.

The Kats got off to a lively start, Lee Maiden and Pat Abrams both scoring tons, the former wiring D12 for a 103 out, Alex Nikolov completing the league on D7. Dave Wright was the only King offering scoring resistance. Ron Cornelius opened with 108 in the second, countered by a ton from Nikolov and good scoring support from Maiden. Eddie Bendelow hit D4 for 0-2. Eddie Fozzard showed a lit-

tle form in the next with 135, but Abrams 125,100,100 opened the points difference allowing John Eyre time to complete the leg on D1.

A good all round performance from Maiden and Abrams 100 in the first pairs culminated in D10 from Maiden for 0-4. A ton and a 140 from Paul Durrant in the fifth leg with the throw was too much for Fozzard and Cornelius as Graham Todd planted D12 for another Kats leg. The last leg before the break featured Dave Wright and Matt Cummins v Eyre and Nikolov. Wright found some of his scoring capabilities with a ton and other decent scores, but it wasn’t enough as Nikolov 100 was followed by an excellent 118 out from the veteran Eyre, nailing T20,S18,D20 for a 0-6 score line at the break. After some fine culinary offerings from the chef Eyre faced Fozzard in the first closely contested singles, Eyre D19 coming out on top, to win the match and both points. Abrams followed and took out Wright on D8.

Durrant found some form after an abysmal start against Cornelius 109,98 to hit D8 for 0-9. Cummins had advantage of throw in the 10th playing Nikolov. It didn’t really matter as the loud but likeable Bulgarian hit 65,100,100,100,100,D18 for a fine 16 darter, equalling the season´s best current held equally by John Walker and Abrams.

Maiden made it 0-11 with just the one leg remaining Minor v. Todd.

Minor hit a ton and scores were evenly traded, Todd left himself 112 and hit T18,T18 but didn’t convert the D2, his opponent thankful of the chance duly took out the required points for a face saving leg.

Porterhouse visited their old hunting ground of PB´s and enjoyed a comfortable victory over the ever improving Pirates. The Porters occupy 7th place at present but don’t be surprised if they move up a place or two by May. Most of the high scoring came from the visitors with captain Ray Sanderson managing the rare feat of finishing all four matches available to play. A nice out in the first S14,D20 was accompanied by a ton from the Porter´s skipper, Newberry assisting well. Wife Sue, kept the finishing in the family, hitting D20 in the second after some high scoring from Brian Nash. Sanderson took out D16 for his second double in the next after good support from Peter Ayre 100. Michelle Lane 100 top scored for the Pirates. Once again Lane repeated the score in the first double but it was Ray Hayes to finish D16 and a 0-4 score line. The Sandersons paired up to face Tracey Venema and Gilly Kirby, in the second doubles. A close encounter followed completed by Sanderson on D3. Eddie Martin and Mick Mills could do nothing against Ayre 140 and Nash 100 and the leg on D10 for a 0-6 score line at the break. Lane acquitted herself well in the first single, but Ayre 100 and D8 just edged out the Pirates´ ace.

Nash´s finishing excelled his scoring in his single going out on T20,D10 to win all 8 legs played thus far. Jan Weston stopped the rot on D2, but the irrepressible Sanderson retrieved the advantage finishing on D10 against Martin, completing his 4 doubles achievement.

The Kirbys, Terry D10 and captain Gilly D2 increased the Pirates share of the legs, in the last two singles.

A surprising 5-1 half time lead was enjoyed by Gogarty´s against the outfit one place above them. The Hunks lone victory coming in the second pairs courtesy of Sid Cross and George Mint D20. By this time of course they were 4-0 down by virtue of Ernie Wilson´s two winning doubles D15 and D10, Richard Patterson´s D15 and Steve Woods D16. Patterson added his second double of the first half in the third double on D1 with partner Brian Newton. A not to be unexpect-

ed fight back came after the break, Kenny Wilkinson D4 seeing off Gail Todd despite a 123 from the Gogarty´s captain. Steph Simpson hit a fine 100 out S5,T19,D19 to make it 3 legs for the visitors setting up Keith King D16 for the fourth. Patterson faced a formidable opponent in Cross and took advantage of throw going out on 68 (T20,D4) despite a ton from Cross, his fourth of the night. Patterson´s win gave the Gophers an ensured point and two opportunities of victory. Mint had other ideas, completing his leg on D2 for 6-5 and a chance of shared points. John Linton was on last for the hosts and enjoyed the throw against the useful Rob Hawkins. A ton and 108 from Linton was enough to set up a 42 out using 2 darts for S15,D16 the match and both points. The Hunks nominated Linton man of the match for his victory and overall 4 tons.

Hub Hyenas had the pleasure of entertaining the Royal family from the Pint Depot and promptly demolished the Monarchy. It was a good all round effort from the hosts who had a full side available at long last, led by the unequalled Simon Williams. Cyril Harrison D2 and D4, Jim Underwood 100 and D16, Shaun Smith D10 and a tasty 63 out (T15,D9), along with Lee Holtham´s high scoring plus a smart 54 out S18,D18 did the damage for the Hunks, although Lorraine Cox did her utmost to secure a leg with some very consistent throwing. At 60 you would have thought Williams would take his foot off the gas but no, this newly appointed Republican went on first after the break and duly planted 100,140,D11 for the match. Totally anti royalist.

Highlights of the remaining games were Geoff Harvey´s impressive leg to include a 133, Smith´s 80, 95,100 and D20 and Harrison´s 133,D16. A 12-0 result but still an enjoyable evening, capped by Debbie Wright´s reasoning of an early night and a Thursday finish too.

The Tavern made it 5 points from their last 3 matches after an excellent away victory at Hattons Honeys. With the score level at half time the match was anyones. Paul Birtwhistle took out Honeys main man Phil De Lacy after the break followed by wins from Justin Hepburn, John Durdsley setting up Ralph Wetherby to claim both points finishing S11,D20 and the match. Tracey Simpson did her utmost against Wetherby scoring 100 and 120 but to no avail. Ivan Jones managed 3 doubles and Birtwhistle was named man of the match. Que Pasa and Busters remain neck and neck after fine victories from both. Irene Russell 121 top scored for Busters, Leah Chesworth repeating the score for Madigans.

KO Cup Semi Finals this week. At Madigans the Kats take on the Hunks and at the Hub, Busters play Madigans in the first to 7 leg triple format. Teams must share scoring duties with a throw for bull to determine first throw and once again in the event of a 6 all score line. Team captains all now have entry forms for the doubles competition which is open to both men ladies and mixed teams. Entries will be collected at the end of February.

LA SIESTA BOWLS

By Norman Adcroft S.A.B.A. Enterprise and Voyager Leagues 27th Jan. The Apollo’s played an afternoon home game against the San Miguel Pulsars and had a very disappointing result going down 12-2.

Although sunny and ‘warmish’ the leveller, which the Pulsers managed better than us was the gusting, swirling wind. Our sole winners were, Barbara Cooper, Iris Kadwell, John Ball, 18-15. No surprise shots to the Pulsars, 87-131.

The Pioneers returned to their winning ways today after a couple of bad results. At home against Vistabella Eagles, Kath Knapp, Carol Thorpe, Gary Thorpe 26-11, Sheila Millard, Terry Baylis Roy Millward 19-12, Derek Souter, Norman Murphy, Ivan Goodsell 32-16, and George Seaman, Bernadette McDonnell, Mike Kelly 26-12 all won to give the Pioneers 8 points. La Siesta also took the shots 130100 to give a good overall win 10-4.

The Sputniks were away to El Rancho Pintos on a sunny but very windy day, a challenge to everyone. Our problems with numbers of players available for the first half of the season seems to have pulled us together as a squad and we now have a tremendous atmosphere..

Although we lost 6s-8, we took 3 rinks and only lost the shots 103123. A superb effort on the day,. Winning rinks were: Jeanie Clements, John Taylor, Harold Charleton 23-9 :Dawn Taylor, Ken Combstock, David Laverick 18-10 Irene Laverick, Alan Barton, Margaret Hunter 21-16 (welcome back Margaret) The Winter League 29th Jan Visitors today were El Cid and what a cracking mornings bowling. We were on track for 4 wins and the overall shot, but El Cid came back at us with a vengeance. We managed to hang on to 2 rinks Bernadette McDonnell, Bill Jordan, Carol Thorpe & Mike Kelly 25-15, Jo Elkin, Derek Lodge, Brian Harman & Jean Cooper 23-15. Shots narrowly went to El Cid 87-91 giving them the result 4-8. Thanks to Jeannie Clements for standing in at the last minute.

CBBA Southern Leagues A & C 31st Jan. The Blues had an afternoon match against El Rancho Mustangs and only managed to win one rink, Joy Gardener, Sue Jordan and Jean Cooper 18–17.

The Gold’s. In the SABA league the Klingons won 9-5 against Country Bowls with the shots 113-93. Winners were: Eric Slater, Derek Cooper and Darren Johnson; Bob White, Neil Morrison and Roy Cordell; Margaret Morrison, Keith Phillips and Pat Coffey. The Trekkers were held to a 7-7 draw against Quesada Pearls with the shots being 93-93. Three winning teams: Ann Holland, John Ester and Colin Lindgren; Jean Parkes, Ray Pollock and Paul Parkes; Frank Barclay, Bert Ewart and Mike Lockett. The Romulans lost 2-12 away to Greenlands Sycamore with the only winning team being Margaret Roseveare, Dave Blackie and Arthur France. The Vulcans had three winning teams beating Quesada Diamonds 8-6. Winners were: Norma Mole, Tony Davies and Tom Riley; Frank Gibbons, Judy Carroll and Alan Mawer; Kevin Hull, Helen Hammond and Barry Edwards.

The Winter League were beaten 5-7 by San Miguel with the shots being 87-88. There were two winning teams and one drawn. The winners being: Kath Reid, Keith Phillips, Roy Cordell and Giuseppi Galleli; Ann Holland, Joe Johnson, Paul Parkes and Mal Hughes.

Fed 4s Whites, playing against La Marina were beaten 2-6. The only winning rink were: Margaret Rogers, Bob Foulds, Cas Blay and Scott Malden. Unfortunately, I do not have the results for the Blues.

All teams in the Southern League won this week, well done everyone.

The Federation Fours, the Mohawks, after a very difficult game at Horadada in a strong gusting wind, came away with a very creditable 4-4 draw. The successful teams of Linda Plaisted, Pete Masters, Tony Sanson and John Cleverly and Frank Scothern,. Sheila Booth, Joe Dear, and Cyril Medley performed as well as could be expected in the very testing conditions only losing the over all by 3 shots. Well done.

The Apaches knew it would be tough at El Rancho and the strong wind did not help, but we managed two points, so well done to Stuart Hemmings, John Staden, Lee Sinclair and Jan Allen, we will get it right and next week we are home to San Luis Whites - Bring em on.

The Federation Choctaws were at home to Greenlands Bears on a blustery bitter Thursday afternoon. Well done to the 2 winning rinks earning the overall points as well. Another 6-2 result has kept us equal top of our league on points.

The winter league played away against San Luis and it was nice to play in less windy conditions than of late. After 6 ends one team on both sides looked to be in control of their game, leaving the other games very close, and continued until the latter stages when Chris,' team edged in front but leaving the other 2 games very close. It came down to Sabrinas rink who needed to win by a minimum of 2 shots to give us overall shot difference and this was successfully done. Final score San Miguel 7 points San Luis 5 points. Well done to the Berleen team winning 16-14.

The Cougars were away to La Marina Seagulls coming away with 6 points. Well done to Bill Moseley, Mike Bayfield, Ros Stockell winning 23-19, Margaret Moseley, David Champion, Chris Liddicott 2016 and Meg Brownlee, Jack Jackson, Bob Donnelly 17-16. Shots for 94. Against 126.

The Jaguars game was postponed and has been rearranged for Wednesday 5th February 1000 for 1030.

VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Another week of mainly good results, Monday’s SABA games saw an excellent win for the Albatrosses although the Eagles struggled a bit.

The Albatrosses travelled to La Marina to face the Astronauts and won by 115 shots to 80 and by 12 points to 2. Wins came from Gail Willshire, Sandra Burrows and Fred Willshire, Mike Cox, Bill Corbishley and Richard Lee, Tom Furness, Dane Howard and Mike Regan, Olwyn Ratcliffe, Mac Maclean and Brian Dunn and Sheila Cox, Neil Burrows and Maggie Furness. The Eagles were also away but lost by 130 shots to 100 and 10 points to 4, our winning teams were Sandra Dempsey, Jeff Neve and Jim Harwood and Mo Foulcer, Pauline Rafferty and Sue Mynott.

On Wednesday our Winter League team returned to winning ways with a 90 Shots to 71 victory over Benitachell and by 9 points to 3.

Winning rinks were Sheila Cox, Barbara Brown, Mike Regan and Arthur Brown, Olwyn Ratcliffe, Mike Cox, Neil Burrows and Brian Dunn and Gail Willshire, Andy Leggatt, Les Barber and Fred Willshire, Beryl Regan, Sandra Burrows, Ian Kenyon and Maggie Furness managed the draw to give us the final point.

Thursday involved our Fed Fours team the Vikings travelling to the Emerald Isle for a hard fought match where we won two of the three rinks but lost out on shots to give a 4 points all draw with 46 shots to us and 54 to the Isle. Our winners were, Gail Willshire, Barbara and Arthur Brown skipped by Fred Willshire and Beryl Regan, Neil Burrows, Ian Kenyon and skip Maggie Furness.

To end the week the Lanzadores entertained La Marina Sharks and won a tight game by 95 shots to 88 and 8 points to 6, thanks to wins from Sheila and Mike Cox and Bill Corbishley, Gail Willshire, Les Barber and Fred Willshire and Beryl Regan, Jenny Bowman and Richard Lee. The Conquistadors travelled to Emerald Isle and only a victory for Jeff Neve. Andy Leggatt and Jim Harwood prevented a whitewash. The Isle won by 113 shots to 75 and 12 points to 2.

EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB Friday, 24 January 2014. A home game saw two EI teams meet with the Outlaws playing host to the Claymores, and like the first game the Outlaws came out on top with 4 winning rinks to 2 and a shot difference of 109 to 107, 10 points to 4.

The Cavaliers had an early start for their game at La Manga/Crusaders. Perhaps we should have stayed in bed as it was a long journey for a mere 2 points, and a shot difference of 59 to 185 - a nightmare at La Manga!

Monday, 27 January 2014. The Moonrakers at home to Monte Mar Toreadors on a quite warm but breezy morning and funny things happening with the bowls, especially on rink 1 where the home bowlers could do nothing right. However, with

two big wins of 26 - 9 and 25 - 9 we finished with three winning rinks each, a shot difference of 112 to 94 and 8 points to EI against 6, we are pleased with that.

EI Titans made the short trip to Greenlands to play the Maples, and a score with a difference. The home team scored on all rinks with 21, 22, 22, 22, 22 & 22 against the Titans 5 rinks of 10 and 1 of 12 (weird or what?) resulting in a whitewash of 14 to 0. Shot difference - 62 against 130 - a day to forget, I think.

EI Neptunes away to La Marina Pathfinders and not the best of times here either, winning on 2 rinks only. With a shot difference of 82 to 120 and 4 points to 10, our luck will change soon won't it?

COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB The SABA Supernovas welcomed the San Luis Klingons to what was to be the final match on our old carpet, they achieved two wins and a drawn game. Well done to Sandra Mcilroy, Linda & Alan Roscoe 17-14.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB On monday The Pintos played host to La Siesta Sputniks, always great company, on a very blustery morning Which made finding line and length very difficult. However Both teams put on a good display and took 3 rinks each, With Pintos taking the shots 123-103.

ROCKET’S GS AT ALICANTE GOLF The sun was shining when 20 players made the trip to San Juan Playa where Alicante Golf is located and all was ready for an enjoyable round on the Seve designed course, that was until we got out of our warm cars and found that the wind was blowing strong and cold.

Following the Spanish breakfast kindly provided by Alicante Golf it was out to face the elements.

Being hardy fellows we battled on and played a 2 Ball Better Ball Hidden Partners. The scoring was effected by the wind, not the self generated kind, you understand!.

It was back to Izzy’s Bar for our favourite munchies, and Roxy’s Izzy Chips, all followed by “Rocket” Ron to carry out the drawing of the cards and presenting the prizes, the prize giving was delayed due to feast of the Izzy chips and golf.

TMGS AT ALICANTE GOLF

On this day in history, in 1820 - Britain's King George III died insane at Windsor Castle and only one member of TMGS achieved or bettered his handicap at the Seve designed Alicante Golf Course.

Today, 20 odd members of TMGS and 4 guests turned up to enjoy a good test of golf and it must be said that a visit to this absolute jewel hidden in concrete should be a “must” on any golfers list of courses to play. Arrive at the course (when you can find it!) and you are treated to a smile and a very honest welcome by the staff which, in itself, is a rare occurrence in the majority of courses in Spain.

The results on the day and previous visits do show that the Silver Division appear to fare better than their Gold counterparts and today was no different.

Those that know this course are aware that there are 6 par 3’s and we, TMGS, reward the NTP’s with a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels and today, we gave away the full complement with a sleeve going to Alex Goslan, Steve Higgins, Dag Lovas, Roger Nielsen, Mick Kennedy and Darren Hancock. We also reward the ‘best guest’ with a Society towel and ball marker and this went to Mrs A Swinnerton.

As said earlier, once again the Silver crowd took the course by the wotsits and achieved some decent scores and it needed 35 points for Ernie Wilson to claim 4th spot. 36 points saw Mick Kennedy and John Hillier claim 3rd and 2nd spots and the only one to achieve handicap (and better it) was Alex Goslan with a very good 37 points.

The Gold crowd didn’t fare anywhere near as good and it only needed 29 pts for Dag Lovas to claim 4th spot, with John Eyre and Steve Higgins both scoring 30 pts for 3rd and 2nd places respectively and Alan Rixson only needed 31 points points to take home the winners prize. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY Last Wednesday, the Society played their second game in 2014 at Alenda. The course was in decent condition and for the cost represents good value for money. The weather was kind with dark clouds starting to appear in the middle of the afternoon but fortunately everybody managed to finish their round before the heavens opened and there was a heavy downpour. The format of the game was a drawn Pairs “Better-ball” competition with 11 pairs doing battle on the day.

The winners on the day were:- 1st with 41 points Rod “Butch Cassidy” Day & Bill “The Sundance Kid”Acton, 2nd with 40 points Norman Lewis & Terry Smith, 3rd with 38 points on C/B Victor Dew & Brian Airey. The Pair who played the most shots were John King & Ted Hooker with the latter delighted to take home the “Roy” to put on display on his mantelpiece for a couple of weeks. The Nearest the Pin winners were Brian Smith, Roy Westlake, Les Lindores and Bill Acton. The “Charity” scratch-card winner was “diddy” Dave Winchcombe. The presentations were made at the Societies base, the Quesada Country Club after the game. Last week we highlighted a rules query in respect of relief from sprinklers on the aprons of greens and in general the ruling is as follows: “Under the rules of golf issued by the Royal and ancient RULE 24/2 covers this exact circumstance and in general if sprinkler head is positioned with two clubs length of the putting surface and if a players ball is situated within two club lengths of the said sprinkler head and if this sprinkler head impedes the players stance or shot, then the player is entitled to take relief within one club length but not nearer the hole” Now you never know just who reads our regular golf column but I received a nice e-mail from John Marshall who is a golf referee in Sweden and he asked for me to notify you of a key addendum to the above rule namely “The above MUST also be covered by a local rule and if no local rule then no relief” Most courses work closely in line with the R&A rules but all players should check the local rules board to ensure the application of the above rule in respect of relief from sprinklers.

Without doubt the winner on the day was the course and the weather conditions because although bathed in sunshine we had 30 m.p.h westerly winds cutting across the course with tight pin positions and lightening fast greens.

CRISTAN STARS ON SUNDAY ELCHE CF ..1 UD ALMERIA ...0 Of the three possible results; delight, disappointment or despair, from their high noon showdown with likely relegation rivals Almeria, Elche eventually scrambled over the line to make it the former. Cristian Herrera, who else?, did the damage with almost an hour gone to ensure Elche, in spite of their opponents rather fetching away kit, ended up in the pink.

An impeccably observed minutes silence for the late Luis Aragonés preceded hostilities and, truth be told, that was probably the high point of an altogether nondescript first forty five minutes during which neither side produced much of note. Elche, as befits the home side, poked and prodded and went close(ish) with efforts by Carles Gil and Manu del Moral before David Lombán sent a powerful header just over.

From ten or so minutes before the interval, you kind of knew both sides had half an eye on the inevitable half-time dressing room rollocking and so it proved. Goal-less at the break.

The only goal of a not that good a game came thirteen minutes after the resumption when, following good work close in by Javi Márquez, Elche's young man of the moment, former Ilicitano Herrera, was on hand to convert from outside the box via a huge deflection off the prone Márquez.

The goal seemed to settle Elche, but first they had to collectively look sharp to thwart an Almeria side who went in search of an immediate response.

Football is, indeed, a funny old game and for Elche it was ever thus.

Missing today was the passing, movement and creativity from their last outing, a heavy defeat away to Real Sociedad from which they had the lions share of both chances and possession. No such luxury today, even though they were easily the better side in a poor game.

A fractious final five minutes, during which the on pitch temperature rose considerably, ended on a sour note for the home side when tempestuous Uruguayan full-back Damián Suárez, previously yellow carded for a stupid and unnecessary hand ball saw yellow again and then red for a clumsy foul on Barbosa who didn't help matters by going to ground theatrically.

Elche held on, though, and to the immense relief of most of the nearly twenty five thousand present, picked up a priceless three points.

WBC ORDER RICKY POW REMATCH

Following the defeat of local light heavyweight Ricky Pow in controversial circumstances last October when he fought for the Latino crown, the WBC has ordered a rematch between the boxer and his conqueror, Emmanuel Feuzeu, after the referee, Francisco Alloza Rosa , was deemed to have stopped the fight prematurely.

Sources close to the WBC suggest that match supervisor Leopoldo Bonias was not altogether satisfied with the outcome after Pow was counted out by Alloza Rosa at the end of the 9th having, according to the judges cards, won 7 of the previous 8 rounds.

Feuzeu caught Pow with about 20 seconds of the round remaining and while the 27 year old Brit covered up on the ropes, the referee stepped in and called the contest to a halt. It would seem that in his report to the WBC Bonias said that, with the bell imminent, Pow should have been given the oppor-

tunity to see the flurry out and then recover during the interval between rounds.

However there is some doubt as to whether the fight will take place as Feuzeu is thought to have retired following the contest. If this is the case Pow will be installed as the number one challenger however with an opponent being provided by the WBC. The fight is expected to take place during the early summer.

In the meantime however Pow will be back in action in Dolores where he tops the bill scheduled to take place on 21 February. The card will be made up of a couple of pro fights, 2 or 3 neo pro contests and another 3 or 4 amateur bouts so for between 10 and 15 euro on the door you will certainly get your moneysworth.

Subject to success in Dolores Pow will then headline in Swindon on 14 March on the KM Promotions card which is being held at the Oasis Leisure Centre. Promoter Keith Mayor is known to have long been an admirer of Pow so he is delighted to have the opportunity to feature him on the Swindon bill.

TORRY AND MURO SERVE UP A BLEAK MIDWINTER DRAW FC TORREVIEJA..........1 MURO CF...........................1 FC Torrevieja added two new players to their squad on transfer deadline day. Kiki Granados, a 31 yr old wide player, joined from Almoradi. He has been training with Torry for some time and decided to formalise the move late last week, while central midfielder Martín Gerard Mendy, born in Equatorial Guinea, arrived from Jumilla in the Murcia Tercera league. Last season Martin was nominated as the 3rd best midfield player in the whole of the Murcia region by popular website Golsmedia.

There was also movement in the opposite direction with both Manu Amores and Eloy leaving the club, although destinations are currently unknown.

Meanwhile, after an excellent start to the season, Sunday evening’s opponents CF Muro have slumped of late, having been unable to buy a goal and struggling to five goal less draws and a 1-0 defeat in their last six games. It seemed as though there would never be a better time for Torry to secure the three points.

However, despite a bright start, they were a goal down just 12 minutes into the game when the unmarked Pablo Carbonell headed home from close range. Torry responded by going close themselves and brought out two excellent saves from Muro keeper Adrian Murcia from Alberto and Alexis.

And they were not to be denied for very much longer when in the 15th minute an excellent cross from playmaker Carrasco found Pastor who headed home at the far post.

Thereafter the game got rather scrappy with neither side showing any real skill or authority as the remaining 25 or so minutes did little to warm the supporters hearts.

The second period was little better. Hardly any action of note with neither side looking as though they possessed the determination to go on and win the game. Torry’s best chance fell to Carrasco who saw his header rebound off the post midway through the half. That was his last action as he made way for Raul Martin, and then in the 3rd minute of added time a lucky escape for the home side as Muro struck the post themselves with a drive from 25 yards. Probably a fair result but one with which neither club will be satisfied.

Next weekend, Torry travel north to Valencia where they take on bottom club Utiel in a Sunday lunchtime kick off. Check the club website or with the Torry Army for travel arrangements.

CF MIL PALMERAS WEEKLY ROUNDUP CF Mil Palmeras 4 - 8 Benferri Alevines Sponsored by Talleras J Martínez Again the Toros had to take on another top of the table team and for the first 15 20mins dominated to match. Alex managed to force the ball over the line for the Toros to take the lead in the 7th min. Oliver C in goal looked comfortable with Neve, Aron and Oliver G shutting down Benferri's attacks. Luke added to the score line heading Neve's throw-in over the keeper .The Toros played well to get more chances but with some good pressure and 2 goal line clearances Benferri kept the Toros score at 2 and managed to grab 2 goals of their own to make it 2-2 at half time.

Second half and Benferri came out with a bang and showed why they are league leaders simply overwhelming the Toros grabbing 6 goals in total . The Toros still managed to create plenty of chances with Ben and Luca working hard but only got the ball in the back of the net 2 twice with one goal from Liam and an own goal forced by pressure from Mingus The encouraging thing was the Toros scored their 2 second half goals in the last 10 mins of the match while 2-7

down and never gave up. Well Done to all players Player of the Match Mingus for all round effort and determined tackles.
