MAYOR CONTINUES HIS DEFENCE OF CALA MOSCA
here are two ‘green mayors’ in local Spanish politics, in the town of Villena to the north of Alicante, led by Javier Esquembre Menor, and in the city of Orihuela, where, if the censure motion recently filed by the PP is upheld, incumbent, 56 year old former music teacher Monserrate Guillen, could soon be removed from office. Both are ardent ecologists and both say they are totally are committed to environmental sustainability. Whilst many would say that Gullen pays little more than ‘lip service’ to the Orihuela Costa, one coastal petition that he does pursue with some passion is the ongoing battle to protect the very last mile of pristine coastline at Cala Mosca. Guillen and his coalition government, with PSPV-PSOE, continue to put forward environmental arguments that will slow down or even halt the
T
development plan at Cala Mosca, a project approved by the previous PP government, which will see the construction of 1,700 homes. Of the 12 PP councilors in the capital of La Vega Baja, where such crimes are said to be almost endemic, 5 are currently facing accusations or charges of corruption, so the defense of that last mile of unspoiled beach has now become symbolic, especially when, of the 40,000 properties currently standing on the Orihuela Costa there are said to be up to 10,000 that have no certificate of occupancy. Former councilor Antonia Morena said it was hardly surprising as for many years there was little thought given to planning, from private pools to public roads, everything was so haphazard. The development project was approved by an absolute majority amongst the PP in 2007. The mayor at the time was Monica Lorente, who is now in opposition, and is currently awaiting corruption proceedings in two cases with the ongoing possibility of a third. Continued on Page 2

Continued from Page One Cala Mosca waters are within a maritime protection zone which accommodates one particular genus of flowering plants Posidonia, seagrass, found only in the seas of the Mediterranean. On land there are two other uncommon species, the snail Tudorella mauretanica which suffers from a threat of extinction and the plant, la jarilla de cabeza de gato, a bright yellow flower that is found only in some parts of the Peninsula, the Baleares, Sardinia and the Maghreb region of North Africa. During a recent visit to the area by an MEP from the European Union, the City Council and the Ministry of Environment were told that that an environmental impact report needs to be carried out on Cala Mosca, and where endangered species are found, however insignificant they may seem, the Spanish authorities who must enforce the environmental community law which outlines the development of enforcement structures and best practices. Names gathered for the petition last year
Monday, 10th February, 2014 "But there are many other interests to weigh," Guillen lamented. “The impact on the local environment would be disastrous and no amount of money or of power should override that.” However the words of the mayor contrast with those of lawyer Juan Enrique Serrano, who represents the Madrid based company, Grupo Inmobiliario Gomendio in Cala Mosca. "I understand that there is no conflict”, says Serrano, “we identified 5,000 plants and protected species and we have agreed to create a micro-reserve.” He draws on the examples in Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benicàssim and Torremolinos where there are buildings on at least 90% of the first 500 meters of coastline. Indeed the company, who refer to themselves as ‘Creators Of Unique Environments’ is already advertising the sale of the Cala Mosca properties on their website. One of three developments, the 2 bed apartments ‘El Bosque’ costing between 105,000 and 140,000 euro, are said to be available during the last quarter of 2014.

Torrevieja’s International Cinema Club By Nick Ireland
orrevieja could soon have their own International Film Club as plans are presently underway to start an English language cinema club, in collaboration with Cines IMF, located in the Ozone Centre. Initial reaction to such a project has been very positive and talks will continue with management next week to work out costing, promotions, film availability and all the small details. Although organisers have other options of setting up a makeshift cinema night in Torrevieja, the feedback is that cinemagoers would prefer the entire cinema experience, of professional projection, sound without headphones, popcorn, drinks and ice creams, all adding to the over all enjoyment event. Torrevieja’s largest club, the U3A have shown an interest from about 50 of their members in belonging to a film club and going to the cinema on a regular basis and others have been adding their names to that list, prior to talks being undertaken next week. The likelihood is that Thursday evenings will be set aside for showings of new releases plus classic films from yesteryear and retrospective film festivals that could include anything from the MGM Musicals, to James Bond to Bogart, Cary Grant and film stars from way back when, as new digital projectors and video mastering technology once again allows the projection of such movies on the big screen. Anyone interested in joining or finding out more details should send their name and contact details to: NickinSpain@mac.com. The proposed club will offer members the opportunity to enjoy the most popular new releases, with theme nights, retrospectives and possibly a film festival all in the planning stages for later in 2014. Cines IMF is presently showing different Original Language films in English with the use of special Bluetooth headphones. These change on a regular basis with more details of times and prices at www.Torrevieja.com. This week’s ‘VO’ offering, which you can watch in English by wearing special Bluetooth headphones is Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Steet, a black comedy that has been nominated for two Oscars. However, be warned that this comedy also has the dubious distinction of being noted as the film that uses the ‘F’ word more often than any other in cinematic history. Don’t say we didn’t tell you!

FORMER ORIHUELA MAYOR ACQUITTED IN CORRUPTION CASE
Through the twists and turns of the frontline political situation in Orihuela, few may have expected a dramatic twist occurring behind the scenes, a situation that not only changes the past, but could significantly influence the future. Former Mayor of Orihuela, José Manuel Medina of the Partido Popular, was disqualified from office in 2013 for seven years, following a conviction for breach of trust following a case in 2003 revolving around the sale of land on the coastal zone, valued at around 2 million euro. However, this week, the court of appeal overturned that ruling, thus quashing the conviction and freeing Medina from both the shackles of being tainted as corrupt, and from not holding any political position. Although this was one of fifteen cases filed against Medina, he has also seen another one of those cases dropped, in addition to his acquittal. Given the current political situation, whereas the PP are in opposition and facing the rule of a minority government, they have tried on a number of occasions to overthrow the government through a censure motion, as widely reported in The Leader, but they have faced criticism for doing so and many even suggesting that the local PP group of Orihuela are acting outside the remit of both their national and regional groups, as a number of those serving politicians are themselves facing corruption charges. José Manuel Medina who took over the rule of Orihuela in 1995, was himself involved in a censure motion, and has now spoken publically about the most recent attempts by his colleagues to oust Monseratte Guillén from his role of mayor, suggest-
ing another level in which the local group of the PP seem to be acting in a renegade manner, stating that had they have asked for his advice, he would have suggested approaching the matter completely differently. In an interview, Mendina expressed his regret at the way his colleagues had handled the situation, saying that “had they consulted me, they would have fared much better”, continuing to point out that “The situation of PP is very sorrowful at all levels and more locally.” Reviewing his experience with such cases, Medina said, “I entered a motion in 86 with Luis Fernando Cartagena as a candidate of office”, lamenting how his knowledge could have proven invaluable to the PP in recent events. This all begs the question as to whether Medina would return to politics, a question which he has not ruled out. Now clear of any wrongdoing, and largely silently shying away from involvement in what some consider to be petty squabbles, the experience of a man who has the accolade of being the longest serving mayor in the history of Orihuela could significantly change the situation before the next elections, whereas the alternative of the PP fighting towards a campaign based on four years of failing battles, with a recent history to the perception that they neglected certain areas of the municipality, such as the coast, and add to that the pending criminal charges of those members still under investigation, teaching an old dogs new tricks may not be a consideration if that old dog becomes the new broom that sweeps clean the politics of a damaged locality.

RESCU E SHIP CREW COSTA CONCORDIA CLAIMS ANOTHER LIFE SAVED FRO M SINKING Doomed cruise ship Costa Concordia has claimed another life this weekend, as a Spanish diver died whilst working on the salvage operation. Israel Moreno Franco, a 42 year old working for the Cádiz based Underwater Contractors Spain, apparently suffered a leg injury whilst working on attaching floatation devices to the hull of the ship. Franco´s dive partner brought his to the surface alive, where he was treated for severe bleeding, only to die a short time later as a result of blood loss. The victim was taken by air ambulance to
Orbetello hospital, and an investigation has now been launched into the latest tragic chapter in this historic shipping incident.
Spanish rescue helicopter “Pesca 2” has been involved in an unusual extraction of crew from a stricken ship this week, as the vessel declared at risk of sinking was itself a rescue ship. “Pesca 2”, which is operated by the Xunta de Galicia, winched 5 crew members from the deck of the “Esnaad 715”, which carries the UAE flag and was en route from Abu Dhabi from Rotterdam carrying an unknown cargo. At around 17:00 on Tuesday, the call for assis-
tance was made by the crew of Esnaad 715, alerting the Maritime Rescue service that the ship was taking on water and was at risk of sinking, located around 50 miles to the northwest of La Coruña. On the day of the incident the seas around the Atlantic coast were subject to storms and waves of up to 10 metres high. The crew were airlifted from their ship and transferred to other rescue vessels before being transported for treatment in hospital.

NEW BRIDGE AND DOG AGILITY PARK MAKE COSTA NEWS
T
he bus service from the Orihuela Costa to the Medieval Market was seen as a huge success once again, with over 200 passengers registering to use the service over the three day event. The town hall still maintain a regular bus service every Tuesday, also calling at Entre Naranjos, which can be used for any normal purpose, such as a visit to the health centres, shopping, or embarking on one of the guided tours of the city, with a knowledgeable guide always available to coincide with the service. More information can be obtained from the town hall. The Councillor for the Coast in Orihuela, Martina Scheurer, has announced that the N332 road near La Regia will be completely closed to traffic on the night of Monday the 17th of February, to enable the new footbridge to be moved into place over the road. The route will re-open in the early hours of Tuesday the 18th, with the bridge still scheduled for opening to pedestrians in early March. Meanwhile, the central structure of the new footbridge near the new school has been put in place and work is continuing on a footbridge near to the Zenia Boulevard, all on schedule for their anticipated completion next month. A government delegate attended the latest meeting with the roads department on Friday, discussing the threatened closure of two access roads from the N-332 roundabout at La Zenia. The town hall proposed leaving the roads open as they are, rather than submitting to the change of one-way access, whilst other options are tested, including the creation of the mini roundabout at the access road to the new emergency coordination centre. The councillor for the coast has been in contact with a local company who were awarded a contract for the installation of information signs in park areas on the coastal zone. The 19,000 euro contract was awarded in December of 2008, but was never fulfilled, despite the money having been allocated and still sitting in the budget. It is not known why the work has never been started, let alone completed, despite being awarded some 6 years ago. Should the company not be able to fulfil the terms of the tender at this time, it will be awarded to another company to ensure that the legally required signs are installed.
Work on a green area and park on calle Plutón is near completion, with ping-pong table and other features for adults, a dedicated and secure play area for children, and the first ever dog agility park to be installed in any park area of the municipality of Orihuela. A formal announcement regarding the opening will be made shortly, but it is hoped that the park area will become a focal meeting point for entire families within the community, but it is also hoped that the efforts will be appreciated and the park will not become damaged or unclean and be respected as a new and improved feature of the residential zone.
The new footbridge will be put in place on the night 17/18 February
Plans are being made to celebrate this year’s Day of the Tree, with an initiative that will see the local schools of the Orihuela Costa getting involved in planting sustainable trees on green areas near to the schools, with children given the opportunity to adopt one of the plants, which they will then water and tend for, under supervision, whilst learning the benefits of the environmental impact of trees, as well as being given tasks that empower responsibility whilst learning. As the children grow throughout their younger years and into adulthood, so will the trees, providing an educational legacy for future generations. A tender has been awarded for the creation of a network of electronic administration in the town hall, a process which will be implemented as a priority, whereas all administrative functions of the town hall will not only be streamlined and become more efficient, they will save a considerable amount of expense in saving paper and workload. Documents submitted through the town hall will be automatically scanned and distributed electronically, rather than the current and somewhat antiquated process of creating multiple photocopies and sending the files through the traditional methods. The process will ultimately lead to the extension of the network to allow residents of the municipality to monitor
the process of cases such as urban and planning applications and other licenses, amongst other features. Meanwhile, the town hall are looking at other potential options for streamlining the administrative paper trail of the town hall process, including a better method for sending out official documentation to residents and businesses, which are currently sent by registered post without knowledge of the applicant being present at the property, 80% of which are returned to the town hall undelivered, but still incurring expense. Officers from the National Police have been meeting with their Local colleagues and town hall officials this week, in preparation for planning activities during the summer season. Safety, security and peace and quiet were all on the agenda, with an action team discussing ways to ensure that the busiest time of year on the coastal zone passes with little or no preventable problems. Noise, parties, botellones and the beach were just some of the topics in the discussion.

ELITE TORREVIEJA COPS RETURNING TO NORMAL DUTIES IN LABOUR DISPUTE
Six of the twenty local police officers involved in Torrevieja´s elite Grupo de Refuerzo Operativo, the task force who were left to deal with such problems as the plagues of “lookie lookie” men, have left the squad and returned to normal duties as they have not been adequately rewarded for their additional services, a spokesperson for the union representing the officers says that they have not been compensated for the extra time worked. Formed in May 2012 with the support of the town´s mayor, Eduardo Dolón, the team have been in the headlines both for their attempts to deal with the tasks assigned to them, and for an apparent lack of support from the courts for dealing with those they arrest, and facing additional risks of riots and attacks in the city centre. Most officers who joined the unit gave a commitment to provide maximum time of availability around the clock, as required, but budget constraints prevented overtime from being paid, and so they were compensated with the offer of days off in lieu.

COUR TING CONTROVERSY IN TORREVIEJA
The increasingly popular Izquierda Unida political group has accused the Partido Popular government of Valencia of wasting a “golden opportunity”, when it was announced in November 2011 that Torrevieja had been given permission for a new courtroom in the city. Ignacio Blanco, the regional spokesperson, said that it was announced the struggling courts of Torrevieja would have an extra facility by the summer of 2012. But, according to Blanco, although the court was approved, and even announced in the Official Gazette, it was not created by the Valencia government, on the grounds that there was no money to manage it. Blanco also criticised the existing facilities, saying how the judiciary in Torrevieja is “collapsed”, and even the infrastructure is failing, detailing how “there are 5 security cameras that do not work”, whilst also speaking of the considerable delays in filing claims and records and how a normal court would deal with around 800 cases per year, but in Torrevieja, the figure is quadrupled. Two examples of the stress the courts are under have been shown how First Instance Court number 2 dealt with 4,000 cases in 2010, more than 3,000 in 2011, and is still dealing with more than 2,000 per year currently. Therefore, Blanco is insisting that the Valencia minister for justice, Serafín Castellanos, immediately takes action in ensuring that the court, which has been promised, is created in Torrevieja.

AIRPORT TAXI DRIVERS PRESSING FOR ACTION AGAINST PIRATES Licensed taxi drivers who operate from Alicante-Elche airport are once again putting pressure on the authorities to deal with both pirate and none-municipal taxis who operate without permission or legal protection from the airport, thus affecting the livelihood of those legally licensed to carry passengers. In a meeting this week, association members representing taxi drivers have pointed out that following disturbances and promises last year, nothing has yet been done to tackle the problem. They claim that on a daily basis they witness between 60 and 80 private vehicles collecting or dropping passengers off at the airport, in exchange for money, although many may be carrying out the task simply as a “favour” rather than a business operation, the taxi drivers still point out that the practice is not only illegal but renders the vehicle occupants without insurance should anything go wrong. Add to that the problem of taxis from areas outside the Elche municipality collecting and dropping off without their required documentation, the drivers state that the situation is fast spiralling out of control. Plans were approved last year for the creation of a barrier access system to the airport for dropping off and collecting, but the estimated implementation date of two months has long since passed, with the department of infrastructure saying in an interview that, “we are working on it” and that it will happen “soon”, although the department were unable to specify dates. The delay in implementing the system has been put in the hands of the Ministry of Development, as it requires their permission to operate, on the grounds that they system will collect and record data of all vehicles passing through the control point to the pick-up and drop-off zones, resulting in compliance with data protection legislation being required. Similarly, the reduction in police patrols has been cited as a cause for concern. One taxi driver said that, “there are many pirates, but nobody does anything”. Although promises seem to have been forgotten, the official line is simply that it is taking longer than hoped t implement, but once it has been put in place, the authorities are sure that they will be doing everything in their power to protect the livelihoods of the official taxi drivers who have to pay a considerable fee in order to satisfy the terms of the provision of a license to operate as an official taxi.

Lion President Janette Bennett of Torrevieja Costa Lions Club was delighted to make a presentation to Antonio Perez Garcia, Mayor of Rojales at Ayuntamiento Rojales on Friday 7th February on behalf of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club. The Lions pledged to donate 500.00 euros to help feed the homeless and most needy in Rojales. TRAFFIC CAMPAIGN TO TARGET THE OVER 65 AGE GROUP The Directorate General of Traffic in Spain, the DGT, has announced that their next awareness campaign for road safety will focus on the over 65 years of age group. In 2012, a total of 27% of all road deaths were over the age of 65, to which the Director General of traffic, María Seguí, said, “It seems clear that we must work specifically on this issue”, as well as in conjunction with other campaigns. Despite the proportion of fatalities in the over 65 group, they are also the only sector which is increasing in road deaths, whilst all others are showing a decline. In 2001, a total of 16% of all road fatalities were in the group, which shows how the figure has increased significantly over the last decade or so. Every year on the roads of Spain, around 500 people over the age of 65 will lose their life; a figure which is almost four times higher that of the rest of the population. The biggest single situation in which these fatalities occur is when emerging from a junction and turning left, thus crossing both directions of traffic, although the small size of some of the road signs has also been named as a contributing factor, as well as lighting and general poor visibility. Crossings are also particularly dangerous it would seem, as is the general visibility and observation of vulnerable road users. A handbook is being produced which aims to advise town halls and others responsible for town planning of the need for an improved technical approach for road junction markings, as well as implementing various new and improved road marking initiatives, especially in areas most likely used by the older generation, such as crossings near health centres and hospitals, after a recent survey revealed that 13% of older people do not feel safe on the traditional black and white zebra crossings.

ALL CHANGE IN ORIHUELA COMMITTEE CHAIRS
The mayor of Orihuela, Monseratte Guillén, has this week conducted a reshuffle in the chairs of governmental committees responsible for discussing and deciding on elements for discussion through the plenary meetings. The most significant impact of the change is that Guillén has removed the control of power from the Partido Popular group, replacing them with members of the ruling government team in the roles of chairperson. The aim of the move is to steer the municipality away from a position of stalemate which has seen the PP objecting to every proposal tabled, irrespective of the value of that proposal, in the hope of forcing the government to relinquish power, whilst attempting to govern from opposition. For their part, the PP are not happy with the move and have called for an extraordinary plenary meeting in order to discuss the matter in a formal manner.

WANT TO RENT A CAR...... BUT DON´T HAVE A CREDIT CARD? NO PROBLEM WITH INDIGO CAR RENTAL. When renting a car in the UK or abroad many car rental companies insist on the production of a credit card at the point of collection of the car. The main reason for this is a security hold against the vehicle for their protection, and the amount can vary from as little as £60 pounds to as much as £1250.00. As Indigo work with such a wide range of companies, they can offer deposits of all levels. Many companies insist that this deposit must be held on a credit card, which can cause many problems for customers if they are unaware of this fact before they arrive at their destination to collect their car. It can be particularly tricky in Spain and other countries worldwide. Due to the recent credit crunch, many people these days prefer to not have a credit card to avoid the temptation to overspend, and a debit card meets most peoples needs these days. There are many kinds of debit cards on the market, and around 90% of these are perfectly acceptable. Visa debit cards with stand up/embossed numbers are generally accepted with no problems. However, Electron, Maestro and pre-paid cards can cause problems. It is still possible to hire a car with these but they do restrict you in terms of choice of company as they are not universally accepted. If you wish to hire a car but only have a debit card, it is important to contact Indigo directly, not book through the website, so that they can tailor make your hire and find a company that will accept your particular card. Therefore you can travel with the peace of mind that you will have no issues on collection which could affect your holiday or travel experience. Indigo can be contacted by telephone 00 44 (0) 113 308 2016 (they offer a free call back service), through the website on www.indigocarhire.co.uk, or by email on sales@indigocarhire.co.uk. They will be happy to give a free no-obligation quote that suits your particular needs. Although Indigo are proud of their reputation as UK car hire specialists, they help many people in this way wanting to hire cars in Spain either for themselves or for visiting family. So... whatever your car rental needs and whether you have a credit card or not, give Indigo a try next time you need car hire and they may surprise you!!!!!

LÍNEA DIRECTA THE BEST COMPANY FOR EXPATRIATES - AT THE BEST PRICE ince 1998 Línea Directa, the market leader in the sale of direct car, motorbike and home insurance in Spain, has offered an exclusive telephone service entirely in English and German.
S
This service, the first of its kind in Spain, forms part of the company’s commitment to quality and excellence, which have also made it the market leader in this business sector, due to the fact that it currently has over 63,000 foreign customers residing in Spain. As a result, services such as purchasing a policy, making enquiries, processing claims, sending documents and 24-hour assistance can all be carried out in English or German at a time which is convenient for the customer by making just one phone call. This is the result of a strategy which is permanently geared towards offering customers the very best quality at the very best price.
And not only does Línea Directa offer the best, it also offers its services at the most competitive price on the market. It does this in two ways: - Price personalisation: behind each quote there is a sales professional who, via a quick questionnaire, will search for the best product and conditions to suit the customer’s personal requirements and will assess him or her according to their individual circumstances. - Maximum competitiveness: still at the best price, this month Línea Directa is making Expats an exclusive 12x11 offer, which allows them to enjoy one year of insurance for the price of 11 months. And what is more, if the person requesting this offer already has another car insurance policy with Línea Directa, then the offer will be 12x10, which is to say two months’ free cover.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
EXPATS IN SPACE Well, its that time of the year again, and after all the goodwill has evaporated, the tinsel packed away for another year, the new diet started and you have considered suicide after receiving your credit card statement, you may be planning a holiday to get over it all. How about a holiday in the sun? I can recommend an ideal place, and that is the island of Gran Canaria. No, just for once, I am not talking about a leisurely sunshine break on one of our wonderful beaches, enjoying incredible nightlife and mountain scenery that is little short of spectacular. Instead, how about being shot up one hundred kilometres into space for a rather lovely view of the Earth, or the blue planet as the travel brochures will soon be calling it? As surprising as it might be, Gran Canaria, has been selected as the place to shoot three satellites into space over the next few years,
together with an orbiting spaceship for passengers, and offering supersonic commercial flights between continents that will reach five times the speed of sound. The new Spaceport is to be built at the existing and newly refurbished airport in Gran Canaria, which folk often forget is the third largest in Spain. The small spaceship, known as SOAR, will indeed be cosy, offering accommodation for six passengers and two pilots, but I was sad to see that there will be no air flight attendants on board. How I will miss those safety demonstrations, in flight meals and sales of duty free, but I guess they will discover another way to get passengers to part with more cash. How about optional high quality oxygen for sale? After recent experiences with my fridge, cooker and dishwasher, of which country and make will remain anonymous, I was delighted to discover that it is the Swiss who will be designing and building the spacecraft. After all, even after a few hundred years, they still make such reliable watches, and I am sure that their time keeping and reliability will be impeccable. This major new project will provide a tremendous boost to the economy of the island, with 60 million euros being invested in the project, together with the creation of new highly skilled jobs. However, given the island’s desperate attempts to block the major oil-drilling project off the eastern Canary Islands, which is supposed to create all manner of environmental disasters, and its preferences for ‘green’ energy and environmentally friendly policies, I fail to see how this is compatible with a major carbon producing activity such as launching spacecraft. No doubt the politicians will have an answer for me shortly. I was also initially pleased and later dismayed to learn that the island has been selected because of its closeness to West Africa and Europe, as well as providing easy access to the Atlantic Ocean. Well, I cannot argue with the logic of that one, but the statement goes on to say that it is ideal for the launch of satellites, because there are no major centres of population below. Hmm, well, as myself and many other expats happen to live quite close to the airport, I am not quite so sure that they have selected the right location. Of course, Richard Branson has already taken the first leap into space tourism. Not being content with offering banking and mobile phone
services, he has created Virgin Galactic, which is due to launch from New Mexico in the US next year. There is already a waiting list of 500 people willing to pay around 150,000 euros for a flight, but Gran Canaria is just so more convenient for us Europeans. There we have it, Gran Canaria is clearly the only place to travel to for a vacation, whether it be on the beach or in space. All in all, I am rather excited about the whole idea and will be busily trying to find the odd 3000 euros, which will be the price of a ticket, tucked in the back of the sofa. It sounds like a great idea for a future holiday, but just as long as there are no tour reps on board trying to flog overpriced excursions, or time-share touts trying to sell me a holiday home on the Moon, even with imported white sand, I will be happy. FRUIT THIEVES FOUND IN PILAR INSPECTIONS Police officers from the Valencia region joined forces with the local police of Pilar de la Horadada this weekend, carrying out the inspection and preventative seizure of 210 kilos of mandarins.

A number of checks were carried out in various locations around the area, including roads and farms, in order to strengthen the protection of rural properties and commercial
The owner of the vehicle was unable to provide sufficient documentary evidence of ownership of the good, resulting in their seizure and they were subsequently taken to the police office on Pilar where a time limit has been imposed for providing sufficient documentation, at which time, should that not be done, the fruit is likely to be delivered to local charities due to its perishable nature.

PACKING FOR A CRUISE? DON'T PANIC! Last year I went on my first cruise, it is something I have wanted to do for a long time and I was really looking forward to the whole experience, I wanted to try everything, eat and drink everything and get involved in everything.
The panic started to set in as the departure date came closer, I noticed that there were 3 "formal nights" on our cruise and a dress code posted on the cruise company website, what had I let myself in for, what does a formal night mean and am I going to get it right? I normally panic pack the night before any trip, but this time it was
going to have to be different, I was going to have to get organised. I did some research on review sites and became even more confused, formal to one person is full length evening gown and matching tiara, and to another it is trousers and a top, what was I going to pack?? As the owner of a boutique you would think it would be easy for me, but I was still unsure, I mentally packed, put things together and accessorised a million times, in the end I decided that the only way to do it was to get myself a rail, put outfits together and see how many events I had covered. When you see separates on a rail it is easier to see what goes together and what can be re-used with other things to give the impression of a different outfit, you can also easily see if you have too many or too few of a certain item, for example I had 6 pairs of black trousers, I took them all but only wore 2 pairs. I was lucky that there were no luggage weight restraints as we travelled by train to our cruise, so if we could carry it we could take it, this was great for me as I decided that if I took everything I could not get it wrong! I have since been on 2 further cruises and packed very differently, my lessons were learned, I now speak with experience when advising on cruise wear. Of course, my husband faced none of these problems, he decided that no matter what he was not going to wear a formal dinner suit and only packed 1 tie for emergencies only, as it turned out that was fine, the formal events are only for those who want to take part, but most people (ladies) did and it was lovely to see everyone dressed to kill. Full length gowns were worn, but not by many and the problem is they are bulky heavy and very distinctive, people do notice if the same dress appears several times, so the best option is to go for cocktail length, dresses that can be worn for other events, and separates that can be mixed and matched. If flying to your port of departure you are limited by airlines weight allowances and so have to consider is it worth giving up 3 or 4 kilo's of your allowance for that full length beaded dress that weights a tonne and for it only to be worn once? I found that forward planning almost halved my packing. I made the most of beautifully tailored evening pants, I wore them on several different nights with differ-

ent tops and each time it appeared like a whole new look. The range by Joseph Ribkoff that I stock here in the boutique is perfect, the cut and fabrics are just right and the collection includes wide leg palazzo pants, glamorous panel pants that are multi layered and boot cut evening pants with sparkly diamonds on the pockets. When it came to tops I also chose Joseph Ribkoff because the collection is stylish and elegant, the fabrics are also really suitcase friendly, they pack and travel really well. I also took dresses with me, ones that I have since worn over Christmas and New Year and I felt that cocktail length was right, not clingy ones as I needed 2 sizes bigger after 14 days on board! The moral of the tale is, separates with glam tops, lightweight fabrics that do not need pressing and special occasion wear that is not too special, everything needs to be re-usable and not hang in the back of the wardrobe until your next cruise by which time you will have changed your mind about it!! We have a great range of cruise wear in the boutique that follows all the rules, we order especially for our growing numbers of customers who regularly take cruise holidays and this year we are hosting our first ever CRUISE WEAR FASHION SHOW on Friday 14thFebruary at 12 noon here instore. CANCER DEATH RATES DROP BY 13 PERCENT IN SPAIN
The mortality rate of cancer sufferers has reduced by 13% since 1990 in Spain, a positive result, but considerably less than the 20% reduction in other countries. Partly attributed to living longer, and better screening techniques, there has been an increase in the number of cases reported in Spain, with the Spanish Society of Oncology stating that there were 215,534 cases diagnosed in 2012, of which two thirds are corresponded to patients over 65. Dr. Pilar Garrido presented the data, saying that many more people now overcome cancer and live a normal life. Overall, across both sexes, the most common cancers in are colorectal with 15%, prostate with 12.9%, lung with 12.4%, breast with 11.7% and
bladder with 6.4% of all cancers diagnosed. By gender, prostate, lung and colorectal cancer are the most prevalent in men, whilst the most common cancer in women is of the breast, followed by colorectal and corpus uteri. In terms of death rates overall, lung cancer leads the way with 20.6%, which also causes a higher mortality rate in men of 27.4% and 9.4% of women. Breast cancer is the biggest killer of women, with 15.5% of deaths. Colorectal cancer is responsible for 14.3% of deaths overall, 13.7% of men and 15.2% of women. Prostate cancer is attributed to the death of 8.6% of male cancer sufferers.

180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams, Paul Durrant, Lee Maiden (Meerkats), Sid Cross x2 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters), Mike Smith, Mel Dawson (Breakaways Bears) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 Shortest leg: 16 darts - John Walker (Que Pasa), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov, Meerkats Busters made their first KO Cup Final since joining the league 3 seasons ago, after defeating Madigans at the Hub (Villamartin). Even without Mark Filer and Shirley Roberts they were too strong for a spirited Madigans side who gave it their all. The other semi-final featured Hattons Hunks hoping to prevent the Meerkats from reaching their 6th consecutive final. Despite a strong personnel the Hunks missed the odd crucial opportunity and the Meerkats never shy to take advantage, once again made the May final hoping to retain the trophy they have made theirs for the past five seasons. The Kats started with a strong triple of Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov and Lee Maiden to face Joe Hawkins, Keith King and George Mint. The first leg of 3 was quite lively, Nikolov and Maiden scoring tons, Hawkins doing likewise, Mint a 95. The Kats got to a shot first, Abrams requiring 54, which was converted in two, via S14,D20. Abrams made it 2-0 on D16 in the second leg of 701, the Hunks showing little sign of opposition. King found the treble in the third hitting two tons, to the Kats one, which gave the Hunks a small cushion for converting the double. Mint duly obliged on D5 for 2-1. The format determines 3 new faces for the second 3 leg triple. Kats captain Derek Kingsbury chose John Eyre, Paul Durrant and Graham Todd, whilst the Hunks pitched in Rob Hawkins, Sid Cross and former Kat Steph Simpson. Tons from Eyre and Durrant were scored without reply
leaving the latter to complete the 701 on D4. Decent scoring from both triples followed in the next, Hawkins and Durrant both hitting 3 figures. The finishing wasn’t quite up to the scoring and the leg was eventually completed by Simpson on D1. Kingsbury substituted Todd for himself in the 6th leg and promptly scored a 125, which was followed by a further 125 from Eyre, who also nailed the necessary D5 for a 4-2 scoreline at the break. Both captains had the chance to change their team for the third triple, Kingsbury chose Abrams, Nikolov and Eyre, the Hunks going with Simpson, Cross and King. Some good scoring from the Kats, tons from Abrams and Eyre were spoilt by the Kats inability to gain the double. Fortunately the Hunks were nowhere to be seen, giving Eyre the honour of converting D1. Nikolov was substituted in the next for Durrant, Hawkins and Mint coming in for Cross and King. It proved wise as Mint gained the all important D8 despite tons from Durrant and Eyre. The Kats wound it up a bit in the 9th leg, Eyre hitting 100,139, Durrant 100,D5, Hawkins hitting the Hunks only 100. Requiring just the one leg Kingsbury kept the same trio who by now were warming to the task, the Hunks had a complete change bringing in Stewart McCulloch, King and Hawkins the elder. The Hunks just couldn’t find their rhythm against the triple who had certainly found theirs. More tons from Eyre and Abrams concluded with a fine 78 out from the veteran Eyre T18,D12 for a 73 result and a place in the May final. The tie was played at Madigans, Los Dolses which has recently been re-arranged. It certainly works with the bar now moved to the rear and the excellent dart throw taking its place. The Hub (Villamartin) hosted the other semi featuring Busters and Madigans Misfits. Busters won the bull to decide who throws first and then wasted the chance by some indifferent throwing. Buster Peter O´Rourke livened things up with an 85 and 100 to leave Misfits trailing. Ray Harvey somehow left D1 after failing to convert 38 points. Misfit Pete James narrowly missed D20 to take the lead leaving O´Rourke to take out D1 for 1-0. The Coopers Karl 81 and Sonya 109 got the Misfits off to a good start in the second. Harvey countered with a 140 to leave his side requiring a small shot. An excellent 82 from Sonya Cooper to leave 36 was converted by James in one dart after Busters had missed D10. Busters really opened up in the third leaving the Misfits trailing. Paul Dowinton requiring 130 was unlucky as his third dart found D1 instead of D20, after hitting the necessary T20 and T10. He needn’t have worried as O´Rourke completed the leg next throw 2-1. Some big scores followed from Irene Russell, Ron Young and Tina Kaylor. Busters had first chance of a double both sides missing, before Will Drummond got D4. Kaylor did the damage in the fifth hitting a 114 and the double, despite further good scores from Russell. Two substitutes in the next Zoe James for Misfits and Babs Warren for Busters the latter immediately getting into her stride with a 90+. Russell supported yet again and set up D20 for the leg only for her team mate to miss the chance leaving Steve Cox to get D4 for 3 apiece. Some great scoring from Harvey meant Busters were on a shot in the 7th with Misfits still requiring 200+. The opportunity was too good to miss and O´Rourke gave Busters a slen-

The Committee are pleased to announce a sponsor for the Mens Singles and Doubles this year. Ralph Weatherby, who was instrumental in forming the Tavern (Villamartin) side has decided to associate his businesses, La Zenia Tool Hire and Premier Autos with the popular Thursday League, after recent discussions with the league organisers and main league sponsor Euronics. The Committee welcome their additional new sponsors. Void of any league points the Queens challenged their counterparts the Kings to a game of cricket, not the outdoor version, but the one played on a dartboard. With neither sides competing in the KO Cup it was a great opportunity for those sometime wayward trebles the Queens occasionally acquire, to be of use in the runs department of cricket. The outcome? Enough to say the girls are still looking for their first win. Kevin Peterson could well be interested ladies. No merit points awarded this week as league games only count. der lead on D8. Tons from Cooper the younger and James disappointingly didn’t materialise into a double, Buster Harvey taking out D16 to increase their lead by 2. Madigans struggled in the next against the barrage of scoring from the opposition´s trio of O´Rourke, Harvey and Dowinton, Harvey using two darts to take out 25 on D4, the Misfits not yet on an out. The 10th leg was a complete reversal of the 9th. Misfits James, Cooper and Young completely out-scoring the Busters trio of Warren, Harvey and O´Rourke. Cooper hit her highest score of the evening, a 120 to leave Young the chance of a 56 out. He missed, but James didn’t next throw for 6-4. The captains decided not to change their sides and a tense leg followed. The consistency of Harvey and Dowinton proved crucial as Busters edged further ahead in the 701 leg. Try as they may Misfits couldn’t find the treble leaving Harvey to take out D4 for a 7-4 result and the remaining place in the final. It should be a great match, both sides capable of fielding strong triples with plenty of fire power.

ALFIES GOLF SOCIETY AT VILLAMARIN 32 members and guests representing Alfies GS met at Villamartin on the last Thursday of January for the first meeting of the year. No rain forecast, but blustery conditions promised to make scoring difficult, as proved to be the case. Additionally 18 very quick greens (in their usual excellent condition) added to players' woes with their putting ! Sam Cobley (hcap 14.2) mastered the conditions better than the rest of the field finishing top of the pile with 35 stableford points. Congratulations to Sam on a well deserved first win since joining our society last year. Mike Smith (hcap 23.6) was 2nd with 32 points. Nearest the Pins on holes 9 & 13 went to Tony Hall and Adrian Russell respectively. Steve Mold saved his best tee shot of the day to win the Longest Drive prize on hole 16. Congratulations to all the winners on the day. The usual thanks to Anita at Alfies Bar for the post match hospitality and buffet, our committee for all their work in the background, and to Mike Probert from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services for arranging our day out. Our next monthly meeting is at Las Colinas on Thursday, 27 February - tee off 10am, and at the time of writing 34 out of the 36 places are spoken for. Please contact myself at the bar or Sandie at alfiesgolfsociety@gmail.com should you want to play. The photo shows Captain, Mike Morris, presenting trophy to winner, Sam Cobley

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Monday morning found The Pintos playing host to the very good and league leaders, La Marina Pathfinders, who are always great company and provided us with a good morning’s bowls. All played well, particularly Maxine and Rod Wight with Tony Robinson, who came back from 14-0 behind to take the rink 23-20. A great all round performance, even though we had home mat advantage, to take all 6 rinks and the overall shots. In the afternoon The Broncos entertained San Miguel Comets and also had a very good win, taking all rinks and total shots, Thursday afternoon found the Fed4 team playing The Vikings at Vistabella, a tough opponent particularly at Vistabella, but despite playing well, we lost the 3 rinks and therefore the total shots.Beryl Styring, Malc Elmore, Mike Smith and Les Styring 9-24. Anne Stone, Merv Armstrong, Carolyn Harris and Irene Mangan Morrice 7-27. MHoltham, Mike Stone, Shirley Edwards and Alex Morrice 14-21. On Friday morning The Mustangs played host to Greenlands Oaks, with the majority of the rinks being very close. Mustangs took 4 rinks with the other two being adrift by one and two shots, also taking the shots Jim Gracie, stew Hamill and Irene Mangan 22-11. Ros Holmes, Steve Bowl and Eddie Thomson 33-7. Beryl Styring, Mike Smith and Les Styring 14-16. Anne Stone, John Skipper and Alex Morrice 23-21. Margaret Odell, Brian Taylor and Ron Odell 16-15. Irene Thomson, Mike Stone and David Whitworth 14-15. The Raiders, meanwhile, travelled to Quesada to play The Swifts. QUESADA BOWLS CLUB I must start of this report by congratulating Lisa Bonsor, Jason Prokopowycz and Derek Sale who have all successfully completed the recent trials for the Spanish International Squad. The SABA Pears were at away to Greenlands Maples this week, but without all our international players. including the three aforementioned, who were in Almeria for a test match against Malaga province. Spain won by a large margin. In a hard fought contest the Pearls managed to win on 3 rinks, overall points went to the Maples. Our Winter League squad had a resounding suceess againt La Siesta winning the match 10-2. So, top of the League with a 10 point lead. The Southen League Swifts and Swallows had mixed fortunes. The Swallows were at home to San Luis Tigers and despite only winning on one rink and drawing on 2 we managed to take the overall shots, resulting in a 4-8 win for San Luis. The Swifts were away to San Luis Pumas and won on two rinks so we dropped to 2nd by 7 points. In the Federagted 4s, the Panthers and the Leopards had a good day, both teams winning their matches 6-4 against Greenlands Bulls and San Miguel Mowhawks respectively. SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB This has been quite a week, culminating in the final events to raise money for Fred Armstrong and his family. Thank you so much to everyone who has turned up, bought raffle tickets or just donated. I know Carol and the family are overwhelmed with the support shown. Almost €5000 was raised and this will be used to provide nursing care until Fred can be taken back to the UK for treatment and rehabilitation. Results in the SABA league this week have been mostly good with all but one team winning their games. The Klingons were up against San Miguel Pulsars, winning 8-6. Winning teams: Kath Reid, Ray Robson and Giuseppi Galleli; Margaret Morrison, Keith Phillips and Pat Coffey; Sally Cordell, Peter Cox and Charlie Marigold. The Trekkers, at home to Country Bowls Supernovas, winning 8-6 with shots 114-86. Winning teams were: Pam Lockett, June Jones and Keith Jones; Ann Holland, John Ester and Colin Lindgren; Jean Parkes, Ray Pollock and Paul Parkes. The Romulans were not so fortunate losing to Horadada Falcons 2-12 with the only winning team being: Pat Malden, Scott Malden and John Malden. The Vulcans, away to Emerald Isle Neptunes were delighted to win 10-4. Winning teams: Norma Mole, Tony Davies and Tom Riley; Sadie Hubbard, Margaret Clarke and Brian Badger; Marie Henly,
Steve Simmonds and Barry Edwards; Frank Gibbons, Kevin Hull and Alan Mawer. The Winter league had a better result this week winning 8-4 against Montemar. The Berleen were not so fortunate. Winners were: Ann Holland, Joe Johnson, Paul Parkes and Mal Hughes; Kath Reid, Keith Phillips, Roy Cordell and Giuseppe Galleli; June Jones, Mike Lockett, Charlie Marigold and Keith Jones. There have been no results received from the Fed 4s teams this week! In the Southern League there have been mixed results. The Lions lost against Vistabella Lanzadores 4-10 with shots 88-100. Winners were: Jean Parkes, Vic Slater and Paul Parkes; Bob White, Ray Pollock and Phil Morrachan. The Tigers, at home to La Manga Crusaders had a convincing 140 win. Team was: Kath Waywell, Scott Malden and John Withers; Frank Barclay, Keith Phillips and Bert Ewart; Margaret Roseveare, Joan Dullaway and Cliff Harris; Ian Ross, Bob Foulds and Colin Potter; Sally Cordell, Mike Smith and Sue Cooper; Maureen Foulds, Peter Fuller and Arthur France. The Pumas away to Emerald Isle Outlaws were narrowly beaten 6-8. Winning teams: Kevin Hull, Cas Blay and Alan Mawer; Bobbie Vanner Alan Rossiter and Barry Edwards; Chris Phillips, Robin Harker and Ray Clarke. The chicken drive on Wednesday was won by Bill Webb with the egg cup going to Kevin Hull. With the withdrawal of El Rancho from hosting the SABA finals, these will now be held at SAN LUIS so get your entries in before it is too late!
EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB The EI Leprechauns started the Fed 4's with a tough game against Vistabella. It was all square in a 4-4 with the Leprechauns winning on overall shots. A good start. League games on 31 January saw EI Outlaws visit La Siesta Silvers. They found it tough going winning on just 2 rinks, shots also down, returning home with 4 points against 10 and 103 shots to 112. Friday, the last day of January, saw the Claymores host the Vistabella team. It soon warmed up after a chilly start, and it got really warm for the Claymores as they had a very good win with 113 shots to 75, 12 points to 2. With only one losing rink only the Captain had a glum face - it was his rink that went down. Friday afternoon the Cavaliers kept their good form against Greenlands Cedars, like the Claymores going down on one rink, taking 12 points to 2 and 133-62 shot difference. Things are looking good. On Monday, 3 February, the Moonrakers made the trip to Monte Mar to play the Matadors on a bright but chilly morning. Team Captain Bill Allen, Jim Houston and Mike Petty were the only winning rink although two rinks went to the last end. However, the Matadors came out winners with a shot difference of 108 to 79, so 12 points against our 2 and we came home with little to show for your trip.
EI Neptunes were at home to San Luis Vulcans and again came unstuck, winning on only 2 rinks but just losing on shots, 105 to 109, so 4 points to 10. It's not been a good time for us, has it? On the same day EI Titans hosted San Miguel Meteors and what a difference a week makes. Last week a 14 -0 loss, this week an 8 - 6 win against the team at the top of the league and . Three winning rinks, John Mullarky, Barbara Eldred & John Jarvis won 28 -10 and an 8 on the 8th end killed the game off.brilliantly. Mel O'Dell, Reg Fooks & John Zeller had another good win 23 -13 with steady scoring throughout the game. Biggest winners were Ed Shepherd, Peter Willicott & Lily Stewart with 28 – 6. The wheels came off the wagon for Mr reliable Jim Mulloy, Glenda O'Dell and newcomer Jo Close losing 28-10 dropping 7 on the 5th end. Gerald Shatwell, Len Fisher & Ron White lost 22 -12 won 8 ends, but 5 ends were 1's. Gina Streeter, Geof Farrington & Marilyn Shatwell also lost by 18 shots 23-5 only winning 5 ends of 1's. Final score 106-102. Still an overall win was what we needed, lets hope we can keep it up
COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB It's been an interesting week at the bowls club with the laying of our new carpet, thank you to our owners Pamela & Mike and to the guys from Greengauge who worked so hard and did a marvellous job (sorry about the mistake last week saying it was Dales!) On Monday our SABA team the Supernovas played the Trekkers at San Luis and got a great result winning on three rinks, well done. The winning teams were Derek Gunning, Maurice Cass & Karen Kirk 29-12. Geoff Paylor, Denis Birkett & Gerry Gough 21-13 and Andy White, Les Turner & StJohn Broadhurst 14-11. Overall shots, Supernovas 86 (6) - 114 (8) Trekkers. Our Fed 4’s team the Clarets did a bit better this week by picking up four points from their away match to the Greenlands Bears, there was only one winning rink but the team of Lynne Bishop, Geoff Paylor & Gerry Gough got enough shots to win the long game 31-5, the
BY LYNNE BISHOP overall shots were Clarets 57 (4) - 48 (4) Bears. On Friday it was our Southern league Ramblers who were the guinea pigs trying out our new carpet, they took on the Horadada Royals, it was a tricky game as the wind gusted across the green but at the end of the day the Ramblers mastered it best and won on four rinks. The other two rinks had close calls only losing their games by one or two shots, a full house would have been a terrific christening for the green, may there be many more good results to come! Jenny Chaplin, Dave Chaplin & Ken Cuthbert 28-6. Lynne Bishop, Geoff Paylor & Gerry Gough 20-11. Lin Watkins, StJohn Broadhurst & Eric Bishop 18-12. Derek Gunning, Sue & Barry Norris 20-15. Overall shots, Ramblers 118 (10) - 79 (4) Royals. For info Dave Chaplin Tel. 968 041 367 or Barry Norris Tel. 968 37 0937. www.countrybowlsclub.com

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Golf Insurance During the last year we have regularly reported on development in Spain in respect of golf insurance and it looks like things are gaining a momentum because previously the ‘noises’ were coming from Murcian courses but now this has been extended to Valencia courses with the following instruction currently circulating: “According to the rules of the Sports Council and current legislation, the National Golf License is required for playing golf in Spain. This license carries insurance which covers liability from accidents that might occur while taking part in this sport anyone wishing to play golf in Spain should be federated through The Real Federación Española de Golf. Golf Clubs and Courses, by virtue of being federated must comply with the regulations of Royal Spanish Golf Federation (articles 09/10/11 listed in circular Nº 78/2010), ensuring that every player who plays on their golf courses is in possession of a corresponding federal license. Those players who do not have a national license can apply for a One Day License which can be processed by the Autonomic Federation. The price for the One Day License from Golf Federation in Valencia Community has a price of 1.50€ and 3.00€ in Murcia .This license is obligatory to all players not members of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. Golf courses are obliged to comply with this law and this license can’t be included in the green fee price” Given that we now live in a ‘blame’ and ‘claim’ society I fully advocate the need for golfers to have insurance cover against damage and personal injury BUT the problem appears to be that courses are being instructed to only use RFEG insurance and many won’t accept private insurance cover which causes a conflict because the AEGG (Association of Directors and Manager of Golf Clubs and Courses) recently nominated Liberty Seguros as the insurer of preference for golf insurances in Spain but then aren’t allowed to accept their insurances on their own courses. This is without doubt just another money making scheme for the RFEG because if it weren’t the case they would willingly accept private golf insurances without question and why do two different regions charge significantly different prices for the daily insurance ticket when the cover is the same from their nominated insurer? I fear that this is just case of people in positions of power ‘peeing’ on the green shoots of recovery of the local golf industry and will try an dig a little deeper and will keep you informed of the outcome BUT in the meanwhile society organisers can expect an ear bending from members having to pay extra for their game of golf. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are some of the best currently available to you.

QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE BONALBA GOLF 3rd February 2014 Matchday 4 Here we are at the penultimate match at Bonalba Golf. This was the match when the minnows met the giants, would they be able to upset the top Society. This time we had a four tee start so on a sunny but cold morning battle began. Everybody had battled hard but the outcome was true to form with the minnows losing out once again, but the scores do not generally tell the true battle. Nevertheless it leaves the League top contenders to fight for the overall title in the final match. Will it be San Miguel, will it be Benijofar the winners for the last two years, or will it be Mini Golf. Everything is nicely set for the campaign to end the season when San Miguel will play Benijofar and Lunes play Mini Golf, this can only make a thrilling end to a really special year for Quesada Super League, as usual played in a friendly atmosphere. There is a difference of 8 points between the top team and Benijofar in third place. There is still space for one more society next season should there be a society that would like to play competitive golf with the Super League local to Quesada. Also, note for societies’ diaries, the League’s Summer Competition will be played in June. Any society that might be interested please email Quesadagolfleague@hotmail.com. All match results and the latest league table can be viewed at www.golfquesadagolfleague @webs.com. Our thanks to Mini Golf and their staff for an excellent spread after the match. VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION – 7th February 2014 at La FINCA GOLF Despite requests to switch off the fan the teams ventured out into the windy and cold fairways,(some even in shorts). The top four positions are all vying for the top spot, and with all trying to make a distinctive move it was obvious the weather and the slick greens would be a deciding factor. Las Ramblas were one of the teams hoping to close on the leaders and with John Wheeler the highest scorer 32 pionts, they were able to be 10 – 4 league point winners. Top spot La Manga North team beat fourth place Club Serena G. S. by the same score and so the gap between first and second remains at just 5 thanks to consistent scoring they are neck and neck with Las Ramblas. EuroToffs G S took on lowly Rockets G S and were the days second highest team score with three players scoring 30 or more and maintaining pressure on the teams above them. But it was the strong team of La Manga RGA and top scorers as a team and individual player John Morgan 36 , who also want to make a move halfway through the season, played newcomers Paddy’s Point and it was they who held La Manga North to a draw to take 6 out of the game and move up a place in the bargain.

he rain in Spain poured mainly on the already-saturated pitch at the Jose Zorilla stadium as two teams well down La Liga fought it out for a honourable draw in the saturated end, but what a battle: both sides had their moments, but Elche will curse most after leading 0 – 2 with 25 minutes to go. Both Elche full backs were out, Suarez suspended and Albacar still injured with the Romanian Sapuranu and Cisma deputising. Also out for Elche were centre back Lomban and striker Boakye, Peligrin and Manu ably standing in. After only 15 minutes Carles Gil limped off to be replaced by Fidel, but Elche were playing well, and went ahead on the half hour. A long throw by Sapuranu was flicked on by Javi Marquez to Christian who slid the ball to Coro. Last years leading scorer slotted it home to the delight of the several hundred drenched Elche supporters who had made the long trip north. It stayed 0 – 1 at the break, but after only five minutes into the second half Valladollid had a goal disallowed for offside, the home side increasing the pressure with Elche’s goalkeeper Tono pulling off sev-

run of play the Franjiverdes went two up. Fidel won a corner, Botia headed it back for Manu to score: the home sides heads went down and Elche could have scored two more which would have put the result well beyond Valladollid’s reach. But substitute Osorio came on to inspire his team in the awful conditions and pulled one back with 20 long minutes left. Ten minutes later he did it again to home delirium, and Elche had to withstand tremendous pressure to hold out for a richly-deserved draw. The point was helpful to both sides, but better for Elche keeping them four points clear of third-from-bottom Valladollid. Elche are now in a respectable 12th position in one of the world’s most competitive leagues with 15 games left. On Friday this week at 9pm the Franjiverdes are unromantically at home in yet another six-pointer, this time against Osasuna who are also on 25 points. Another 1 – 0 Almeria-type result will do, and help Elche stay in top-flight football next season - after taking 26 years to get back there. Mucho Elche!

Torry moved back to within touching distance of div 3 play offs, following this emphatic victory over basement side Utiel. Proceedings started badly, with Utiel taking the lead on 10 mins, but Torry soon found their feet. Alexis went close from 12 yards, his well struck effort just missing the target. Utiel were getting rattled, well illustrated by 3 bookings in quick succession, and it was only a matter of time before Torry levelled. Twas Dani Meseguer who duly obliged in 1st half stoppage time, as he stroked the ball home at the far post. New signing Martin made his club debut, replacing Carrasco early in the 2nd half. Obele chased a long ball, and as the opposing keeper hesitated, headed over him, putting Torry into the lead. Alberto should have increased the advantage, but he rashly wasted a glorious assist from Micro, missing an open goal from only 5 yards out! The Torry front man was soon to make amends when he slotted home a deserved penalty, making it 3-1 to the visitors. Carrion hadn't seen a lot of action, but midway through the half, the visitors custodian brought off a great save to prevent Utiel reducing the deficit. Dani Meseguer went close to getting his 2nd goal, but a 4th goal wasn't far away. Fans favourite Pastor went on one of his trade mark solo runs, culminating in him coolly slipping the ball under the keeper. Kike made his club debut, replacing Alberto, before Paul came on for Valeolivas. One things for sure, the referee can't be accused of being a homer, for he booked no less than 8 Utiel players. This victory secured a nice little double over Utiel, hopefully the first of many this season. Next week at Vincente Garcia Stadium, Torry have a mouth watering local derby in store. Make a note of Sunday 16 February, ko 5pm, when high flying Orihuela are the visitors, for what promises to be an action packed fixture. In the early season fixture at Orihuela, Torry held their opponents to a 2-2 draw.

ZARKOV SEALS POINTS San Fulgencio C.F. 2 C.F. Racing Playas de Orihuela 3 Sponsored By: The Abbey Tavern Pub & The Gato Pizzeria. Racing entered this important game having to reshuffle their line up due to the suspension of Carlos Valderrama so Racing keeper Scott Brunton slotted in at right back and Alex Agular in as keeper. Racing dominated the opening minutes and created several decent chances on goal. The Racing defence coped well with the attacking efforts of the home team who couldn't handle the speed and power of Brunton, Cockroft, Zarkov & Captain Medina. Despite having a large amount of possession it was the home team who scored first with a break down Racings right side when Brunton was exposed two on one due to the lack of tracking back from right midfield and the strike slotted into the back of Racings goal. On 33 mins Racing fell further behind when a clearly off side goal for Fulgencio was allowed to stand. Racing never dropped their heads and even 2 - 0 down still looked the better team. On 38 minutes Racings Nico Garcia struck a goal back despite Racing being down to 10 players whilst Brunton was receiving treatment to go into half time 2 - 1 down. Half time team talk was simple, be patient and our class and higher level of ability will prevail. Racing didn't have to wait long and started intensely putting the home side on the back foot a great move started with Brunton passing the ball down the right to Garcia who crossed the ball to Glen Lawton who had licence to push more forward in centre of midfield struck a fierce shot past the Fulgencio keeper to bring the score level 2 - 2. Fulgencio were clearly rattled and their manager distraught. The most satisfying goal came on 59 minutes for Racing when Dani Zarkov scored from a corner which was the first goal of the season from a corner for Racing who had worked all week on the training pitch to adjust this problem. A great win away from home under difficult conditions! 3 - 2 final score and another 3 points for Racing. For further information contact CDM on 965 503 915 or George on 679 77 44 88. The club have teams for all ages from 3 years to adult level and train at CDM sports centre Playa Flamenca. All coaches are qualified, legal & insured.
CF MIL PALMERAS ROUNDUP CD Cox 7 Mil Palmeras 0 Prebenjamin Sonsored by Sunshine FM102.8 fm A Very disappointing performance by the young Toros after the improvement of the last 3 games as Mil Palmeras came down to earth with an almighty bump. Although CD Cox's ridiculously small pitch was never going to suit us its not a good enough excuse for several lacklustre performances all over the park, although Aaron did make some important stops to keep the score down, Mason tried his best on the right but there were just too many off days from other players to make a fist of it, add to that the bedding in of two new inexperienced players and it was a poor day best forgotten. Man of the match Mason Cooke solid effort and deserved better.
Alevines - Albatera 4 v 2 CF Mil Palmeras Sponsored by Talleras J Martínez Ford Garage Another week and another top 3 team for the Toros to face but this time with a depleted and slightly second hand squad due to illness. Albatera started with a bang grabbing 2 goals in the first 10 mins. The Toros got back on terms with Albatera and started to put the pressure on. With the Toros 3 underage players (Aron, captain for the match, Ben on the left and Mingus on the right) hitting hard the Toros put Albatera on the back foot. While the Toros had plenty of chances only Ben managed to beat the keeper and the wood work to leave it 2-1 at half time. Second half and the Toros got off to a steady start only to have a couple of momentary slips allowing 2 more goals in .The Toros "never give up" attitude helped them keep working Albatera's midfield and defence hard but just not making the most of their chances .Oliver G topped off another quality performance smashing his penalty home to leave the score 4-2. Another solid performance overall from the Toros ,just need to relax more in front of goal to reap the rewards of their hard work . Well Done to all players. Player of the Match Oliver Godden, solid, dependable and hard working .

DAYA GO DOWN BATTLING Daya Nueva 1 Benferri 3 Alicante Cadetes 2a - Team Sponsor: Segurlab Following last week's poor performance Daya had a tough nut to crack in Benferri, today's visitors to La Puebla. So it was pleasantly surprising to see Daya start very very brightly and almost take the lead through Angel on 3 minutes. The home side continued to push forward playing some very good football. The visitors did look very dangerous on the counter attack and on 15 minutes should have opened the scoring when a flying header from a corner just missed the mark. Then Daya had a good chance from a Luis free kick, but his fierce shot was well saved by the Benferri keeper. The visitors were now pushing the home side back and a goal for them looked imminent. It came on 30 minutes from a corner which Daya failed to deal with. The ball ricocheted about the area before being stabbed home to give the visitors the lead. On 36 minutes Danni was caught out at his near post and could only help a ferocious shot into his own net to make it 2 - 0. No more goals before half time and at 2 - 0 down Daya were now up against it. The second half saw Benferri set off at a gallop and Danni in goal made three very smart saves to keep the floodgates from opening. To be fair Daya kept their heads up and in Luis they had a player who could possibly nick a goal from their rare counter attacks. The Daya goal came on 55 minutes but not from Luis. It came via a block buster of a free kick from distance by Jota. Barely 3 minutes later a superb turn and shot from a Benferri forward restored their two goal cushion. Still Danni was making great saves along with the Daya defence to keep the scoreline at 3 - 1. it was never ending attacking from the visitors and surely they would add to their tally. Somehow they didn't, in fact Daya had a couple of half chances of their own. So a very good Benferri side took the 3 points with a 3 - 1 win. It was a good sporting competitive game that was well controlled by the Match Official. The large crowd was treated to an entertaining game created by both sets of players. I think that this very good Benferri side will be the champions come the end of the season. No one Man of the Match for Daya this week, as they all raised their game from last week's very poor performance. By Daya Dave.
