DEMANDS TO PROTECT TORREVIEJA SALINAS

The Izquierda Unida group of Torrevieja is demanding that the ruling PP government provide an immediate solution to the lack of staff in the Natural Park of Torrevieja and La Mata, and have criticised the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, for not defending the environmental heritage of the village. Meanwhile, Víctor Ferrández, local coordinator of Izquierda Unida, says that as the chairman of the Governing Board of the Natural Park of Las Lagunas de Torrevieja and La Mata, Dolón is “obligated” to defend the environmental areas against the actions of the ministry, and the “scarce assets” that decades of over spending and neglect by the Partido Popular has resulted in. The previous operator, VAERSA, filed for redundancy of its workers in 2012, intent on the redundancy of some 400 workers, later to settle for 300, mostly technicians working

on the management of the protected natural spaces of the community. However, through a series of failed talks and negotiations, involving the current Valencia councillor for infrastructure, planning and the environment, Isabel Bonig, the Supreme Court annulled the redundancy move, but the public company refused to comply with the judgment and appealed for the cessation of proceedings currently pending ratification, as this would force the company to pay the salaries of workers from the date of dismissal until today, in addition to reinstating the dismissed workers. In Torrevieja, these cuts have resulted in the dismissal of three of the four technicians who operated in the area of the Salinas, one of whom was a guide, another a biologist and the third an expert in environmental sciences, which has led to the closure of the visitor centre on various days, and leads to a lack of environmental monitoring and attention to the visitors of the Natural Park, as well as the consequential increase in the risk of fire and damage the park. In addition, the area has an international declaration of being a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Therefore, the Torrevieja group of the Izquierda Unida, in collaboration with Luís Torró Gil, deputy of the EUPV in Valencia, will present a series of questions in Parliament to demand an immediate solution

Luís Torró Gil said that “the EUPV have insisted through numerous parliamentary initiatives in the defence of the park and will continue to do so, We will present a battery of questions to Councillor Bonig to explain what types of specific measures will be taken in Torrevieja to resolve the apparent lack of technical staff”. The ruling political group of Torrevieja, the Partido Popular, intend to table a motion in the next plenary meeting that will see a mass of land near to the municipal cemetery have its classification changed in the Plan General, which will subsequently allow for the extension of the cemetery, originally built in 1898. The council intend to reclassify the land to enable the extension of land for burial plots, as well as road access and parking, and say that the move should not be the subject on an environmental impact study, as the change in use is not significantly different to the land currently vacant, albeit within a short distance from the protected areas of the Torrevieja lagunas, it is also close to the industrialised areas of the salt mining facility and electrical substation. The extension will, according to the town hall, allow for burials to be continued “for the next 20 years”, with a capacity for another 1,300 bodies until the year 2025. Around 600 Torrevieja residents die every year, but as the majority of the

population is foreign, a lot of those bodies are repatriated to their own home towns. The 867,480 euro investment reported in August 2011 was set to “ensure space for burials for the next 20 years”, according to the Councillor for Infrastructure, Project and Contracting, Javier Montoro, which should have already secured the future plots until 2031. The extensive refurbishment program was not without further controversy, as even the new gate meant the removal of one that was protected and listed, without anybody seemingly realising it was of historic significance. Further criticism has been levied on the town hall recently after it was revealed that the cost of using the municipal facility had been increased by the town hall, with opposition groups complaining about the persistent increase of indirect taxes to residents of the town. Should the plans be approved this time, the good news is that there will be plenty of space for those dying to get into the newly extended cemetery of Torrevieja.

STAR TREK PROJECT FOR PARAMOUNT THEME PARK Reports published last week on their official website suggest that Star Trek could be beaming into Spain by the end of next year. We’re not talking about a convention. And, no, the next film won’t be shooting there. Rather, Star Trek will be represented in force at Paramount Park Murcia, to be located at Alhama de Murcia on the Mediterranean coast about 270 miles southeast of Madrid. The wide-ranging project will incorporate condos and office buildings, hotels, malls, a casino, a convention center, gardens, nightlife and dining areas, an exhibition hall/auditorium and… a theme park divided into several sections. Plaza Futura will be designed to appeal to Star Trek fans. 3D renderings depict a large futuristic square that will include a Starfleet Spain recruiting center, a 3D simulator ride (which allows guests/recruits to experience adventures in outer space), and a Warp Speed Coaster that will reach exciting heights and speeds and include an underground portion (a wormhole, naturally) and several loops. PROTESTERS SAY NEW WASTE PLANT SHOULD BE BUILT ON THE COAST

Organisers claimed that almost 3000 people attended the rally on Sunday to protest against the construction of a new landfill site in Albatera, situated adjacent to a populated area in an area of natural beauty. A police spokesman, however, suggested that the figure was closer to 1300. The protest was organised on the first anniversary of the founding of the group ‘Albatera – No to landfill’. Spokesman Manuel Antonio Marín said that the group wanted to celebrate the anniversary of its founding with a new protest to re-emphasise public objections to the building of the Plan Zonal Area Waste XVII (Vega Baja). He said that the Waste Consortium UTE Cespa-Ortiz had committed many breaches of the contract within the time of construction of the facility, that the project is outdated and it does not meet European environmental regulations. The platform states that the contractor must indemnify the municipalities in the region because, due to their inefficiency, municipalities have been forced to transport their waste to other locations (Xixona, Elche, Elche, Murcia, Alicante

and Villena) which has resulted in an increase in taxes for their citizens. The aim of the group is to participate in the creation of a new zoning plan for the disposal of waste in the area but they want to avoid any commitment to incineration plants which they say have become fashionable but are difficult to maintain. One idea is that each of the municipalities involved makes its own separate collection of waste which it separates with the use of a labour pool made up of the unemployed. Any items found to be recyclable can then be sold off to recycling companies. Marin believes that in this way the region can reduce rubbish by up to 80% and avoid building big holes to deposit the trash, but he admits that for this to succeed there is a need to raise awareness amongst the public. However, in the case of a waste plant becoming necessary, the platform consider that it should be built on the coast, because that is the area from where most waste is generated. In this way there would be enormous savings on transportation as the need to take the waste inland would become unnecessary.

SAN FULGENCIO COUNCILLOR WISZNIEWSKI ANSWERS ALLEGATIONS OF SEXUAL HARRASSMENT ith reference to an article in Friday’s, Información newspaper, where an ex female member of staff has accused me of sexual harassment towards her over a period of 18 months. First, let me say that I vehemently deny these allegations. It is my understanding that prior to these allegations being put to the Guardia Civil, she spoke with the Alcalde, Carlos Ramirez and stated that she intended to report the matter to the Police, but stated that if I was persuaded to resign from office, the complaint would go away and he would avoid being involved in a Scandal. As I completely deny the allegations, I saw this as a form of Blackmail. I informed the Alcalde that I was not going to resign. I find it strange that up until June of last year, she shared a house and her life with a member of the Policia Nacional and for all that time she apparently said absolutely nothing to him. Secondly while her brother and her son worked in the same office since day one and neither of them were apparently informed and if they were, they never said anything to me. Thirdly: I find it strange that when the time came to execute the government cuts, which would have seen her brother and her son being released from their posts, this allegation should come to the fore. Fourthly: In September of last year, I had serious thoughts about stepping back from the number one position in favour of this woman, for the next election. I informed her of my plans and suggested that she

take a more active role in local fiestas and organisations. It was about this time that she decided to organise a Dog Show on the Urbanisation. She started to organise this event, without prior consultation with me. She only mentioned this once the wheels had been put in motion. After the conclusion of this event, she took three days off as she stated that she was completely stressed out by the Dog Show. This made me rethink my prior thoughts for the next election. I informed her that I would take the Party into the next election in the Number 1 position. She seemed taken aback and annoyed by this news. Over the last few years, on numerous occasions, when she has overstepped her authority and spoke out against fellow Councillors, Council officials and Lawyers. I had to censure her on many of these occasions. I only raised my voice but never shouted at her or spoke to her with contempt. Despite these reprimands and the reminder that she was there to explain the nuances of the Spanish language to me, at that time or later, she continued to express her opinions and cause unnecessary annoyance in Council meetings. Because she had on many occasions done excellent work, I would always allow her a great deal of leeway. However, I was by this time having doubts about her abilities and seriously losing confidence in her. Returning to the allegations. She reports that she submitted her complaint to the Guardia Civil in Guardamar on the 29th of January. A few days later Samantha Hull, my asesora, was invited to make a declaration to the investigating officer, although she has neither heard nor seen any form of sexual harassment towards this woman. She was informed that I would be contacted later that day to give a declaration to the Guardia Civil. Three weeks have passed by since then and to date I have never been interviewed. I have been informed through another Police source that the papers have been sent to the courts. Should this case go ahead, I will answer fully in front of the judge, with proper legal representation and an official interpreter.

TELEVISION SWITCH OFF Finally the big and much reported TV switch off has happened which should put an end to all the headlines and rumours. At The Leader we have published the facts and from day one, we have told you that there will not be a black out in this area and neither would you need a massive dish as reported by a number of other publications. But still there are many headlines, many making false claims, so here are some facts that you might need to know: Dishes may need adjusting slightly as the new satellite is slightly off the 28.2 deg position. In most cases this will bring the channels back. A 1 mtr dish will struggle. It will still get you some English TV but not BBC and ITV in this area. However, there are reports of these working in Benidorm. A 1.,2 mtr dish will work in this area and get you most channels, however once you get slightly south ie Los Alcazares/San Javier it will start to struggle and it will not cope with bad weather. A 1.4 mtr dish will work fine in all areas as far down as Cartagena. There have been reports that these are also OK in Mazarron and is it would seem to be the best ‘value for money dish’ without being too big. A 1.9 mtr will give you extra strength but is not necessary in this region, however it would be needed further south than Mazarron. These can be double the price of a 1.4 mtr and they need a concrete base.

If you have a 1.4 mtr Dish and live in the AlicanteCartegena area you need to contact your installer and get the dish re aligned. If it is a 1.2 mtr dish

either get it re aligned or upgraded to a 1.4 mtr (depending on your area). It is important to have a good quality dish ie Famaval, a quality high gain LNB (black ultra) and a sturdy bracket (60mm on a 1.4 mtr dish). This will ensure that you don’t get ‘dish bounce’ in the wind. There are no more changes planned for the next 15 years. There is 1 more satellite to be replaced, however, but this will not affect these channels. So if you want the facts follow The Leader!!

SCHOOLS, ROADS AND COASTAL EVENTS LEAD ORIHUELA NEWS The pace of work is steadily increasing on the site of the future secondary school on the Orihuela Costa, with a range of trucks, vans, diggers and work crews all appearing on a daily basis. Recent accusations that the building permit issued by the Orihuela council had been revoked were dismissed, as the validity of the license was confirmed by the planning department. Given that the main structural work had already been completed, it is still believed that the school may well be on schedule for completion before the next academic year.

The tender process for the award of running the beach-based Chirunguito bars expired this week, with the municipal council now tasked with awarding the contract to the most valuable bidder. The process this year was not without controversy however, as a local businessman filed a complaint challenging the process, believing it does not allow for free competition and was “tailored” to meet the needs of the current concessionaire. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, told The Leader that the process is fully legal and has met with approval of all the technicians and engineers involved, with the complaint surrounding the fact that the contract requirements are all based on having the correct quality and customer care accreditations to qualify the level of service required on the beach bars. The on-line survey of bus users has now come to a close, with the town hall collating the data, allowing them to see what suggestions

have been made to improve public transport around the coastal area. This costly facility is oversubscribed for the two summer months, but then hardly used to its full capacity for the rest of the year. Another service which is provided and paid for by municipal funds is the direct bus that runs from the coast and Entre Narajos to Orihuela city, a service which barely carries any passengers, and might be put to better use. The survey was initiated to see what changes to the service might encourage more users to travel on the bus network. In conjunction with the public survey, the bus operator has also been examining the timetables, in order to see if any improvements can be made to reduce the “lag” that occurs as the day continues.

Similarly, the engineers will be assessing the two proposed locations of new bus stops on the N332 at La Zenia, one which will be placed near the white church on the Torrevieja bound carriageway, the other, in the Cartagena direction, near to the taxi rank. At the same time, the town hall are looking to try and dedicate some of the ground adjacent to the Cartagena stop which could become additional free parking places to increase the volume of parking in the area.

The weekly Thursday market on the Orihuela Costa will shortly move to its new home, albeit only a short distance away from its current location. Engineers will be on the site this week, mapping out the new plots for the stalls, which will move across the roundabout near the health centre to a road which is wider than its current home, thus giving more space to the facility, but the new location will also improve the environmental condition of the coast. With the current location on the edge of the cliff top, it is inevitable that some waste and rubbish falls over the edge and down the side, as well as the fact that many people simply throw rubbish from the top, but as this is one of the environmentally protected micro reserves of the Orihuela Costa, the importance of keeping the area clean is vital. The footbridge over the N-332 at La Regia was successfully installed last week, and the site is on schedule to be officially handed back to the town hall on the 7th of March. The bridge will then be formally opened a few days later, after a long awaited legacy first unanimously approved under the rule of the Partido Popular government, has finally been realised. The temporary roundabout at the access and egress to the unfinished emergency coordination centre, which is designed to improve traffic flow at the N332 La Zenia roundabout, will soon be completed, with engineers visiting to re-asses the site this week. Meanwhile, the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has arranged a meeting with the

The Triathlon event is set to return in the middle of May after the success of the first time it took place on the beach last year. Various sports initiatives are in the pipeline arranged through the department of sports and the municipal sports centre, which may well include that annual and very popular beach volleyball competition, but one of the most exciting events which the town hall are hoping to bring to the coast this year is a scaled down version of the annual Moors and Christians parades which take place across Spain.

ORIHUELA COSTA DOG AGILITY PARK NOW OPEN

Last Friday saw the official inauguration of the first dog agility park to be constructed on the Orihuela Costa, with the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, officially opening the centre at noon. Located on the south end of calle Pluton, near to calle Arco Iris on the La Florida urbanisation, the park is equipped with a sandy floor covering, hurdles, balance boards, rocks and poles, to tantalise the imagination of dogs of all sizes. Nearby is a newly refurbished childrenÂ´s play park too, both surrounded by trees and plants, which the councillor hopes will become a central point for families, along with their doggy members, to meet and enjoy this community based initiative. Local professional dog behaviour expert and trainer Angela Holt was on hand during the opening on Friday, giving a demonstration of how the facilities can be used, and happily answering questions on dog training. Although this is the first facility on the Orihuela Costa, it is hopefully not the last, with a much larger facility integrated in the future plans for the development of the park at La Regia amongst one.

POLICE OFFICERS TO FACE ACTION OVER ANIMAL ABUSE Two police officers who were involved in an incident of abuse against animals may face criminal charges after an animal welfare group has called for action following the posting of a video that shows the pigs being sprayed with gas by one of the officers as a joke. The video clearly shows a uniformed officer spraying a substance into the face of one of the pigs, the animal becoming disorientated, seemingly as a result of inhaling the substance or its contact with the animal, becoming distressed and therefore a clear case of animal abuse. The incident is said to have occurred some years ago but has been brought to light by the recent distribution of the video through the internet. The two officers are still in service, although not in the municipality where the abuse took place, one serving the island of Ibiza, the other in Mallorca. The PACMA animal rights group has vowed to take the case to court, but they are waiting to initiate action as another animal protection association is already pursuing action. The two officers could face a criminal case for an alleged crime of animal abuse, and the opening of a file by the conselleria d'Administraccions PĂşbliques of the Balearic Government.

IMPROVEMENTS TO ERAS DE LA SAL

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by Councillors Javier Montoro and Carmen Gómez Candel, visited the site of the improvement works being carried out in the Eras de la Sal, last week which they state will be fully completed in less than a month. The mayor paid tribute to the municipal staff carrying out the development which he described as a great example of workmanship. He said that there had been a municipal investment of 46,000 euros in the acquisition of materials with the total cost of the project put at about 150,000 euros. The initial work had been to the repair of the perimeter fence, approximately 75 mtrs in length, leading to the bottom of the Eras de la Sal. Additional tasks included at the so-called archaeological site included the installation of a geotextile blanket to prevent weed growth, the placement of artificial turf in green and blue plus the laying of white gravel bounded by wooden sleepers. Additionally the entire bottom of the Eras de la Sal had been thoroughly cleaned. Also nearing completion is the laying of the asphalt car park, an area of approximately 500 square meters, earmarked for use of vehicles. There has also been improvement work carried out in a number of the adjoining buildings.

DARK NIGHTS FOR SOME TORREVIEJA RESIDENTS Residents of some of the most populated areas of Torrevieja have denounced the town hall for lack of action after they have been without street lights at night for six days. The area affected spans the urbanisations of Jardín del Mar 1 and 2, Aquapark and Doña Inés, an area which historically suffers water damage during rain storms and has been in the headlines for many years due to persistent failings of the town hall to recognise the plight of the residents, this latest episode adding to the frustration of the thousand or so homes affected. The area is near to large commercial zones and the main road affected is on the route where children are collected for their journey to school. The entire area has also been subject to numerous complaints over lack of police patrols and a general neglect from the municipality. In response to the complaint, the town hall report that they were not aware of the problem and would now investigate it.

TORREVIEJA MAYOR MEETS WITH WASTE WORKERS Workers involved in street cleaning and waste disposal in Torrevieja attended a meeting this week, in which the mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón, attempted to reassure them that their jobs are safe, irrespective of the recent plans to split the service. The ten year long contract for managing waste is about to come to an end, with one possible consideration being the extension of the service, which financial experts have warned is not viable and cannot operate within budget, as the town hall has seemingly not had sufficient time to arrange for a new tender process for an alternative supplier. Although many of the workers said that they appreciated the efforts of Dolón, they were still calling for assurances that their jobs would be

safe, after initial plans would have seen the loss of some 50 jobs, around a quarter of the workforce. The workers therefore have reiterated their insistent not to split the service, and have not ruled out the possibility of calling a strike if their demands are not met.

TORREVIEJA MAKE €40,000 SAVING ON WATER BILL Torrevieja has saved 40,834 euros in the last year on its expenditure on potable water which, for over 15 years, has been supplied free of charge to a dozen public agencies and state establishments in the town, none of which have been the responsibility of the town hall. Up until the first quarter of 2013, the Ayuntamiento has always met the expenditure involved in the consumption of more than 45,800 cubic meters of water per year to state institutions and associations residing in the Torrevieja. Among them has been the Civil Guard barracks and the town’s five Secondary Schools. Water has also been provided free of charge to the Red Cross, the eco-park, the Centre for Rehabilitation and Social Integration (CRIS) and La Inmaculada nursing home The measure has also seen the removal of the free supply to at least one individual who received it following an agreement with the City for providing the use of private land. In all cases, the City Council has now turned off the tap to the free consumption of water after having been assured that the supply would continue without any difficulties. In the Civil Guard barracks, one of the largest in the country and home to dozens of families, the responsibility for payment has now been passed to the organization itself.

It is not only the UK and Ireland that are being affected by severe weather conditions at the moment. Just days ago the third snowstorm in a week was pushing the East Coast of the United States to the brink with a total of 28 inches of snow falling on Central Park in the first 10 days of the month, making it New York's second snowiest February on record behind only February 2010.

The relentless snowfall has led to critical shortages of rock salt to melt the snow in Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey but all that is about to be eased with the departure from Torrevieja last Wednesday of the vessel "Sakura Kobe" loaded with 28,000 tons of rock salt. This is understood to be the first occasion for very nearly 20 years that a ship ladened with salt has left these waters bound for the USA. At 180 meters in length and 28 in width, the "Sakura Kobe" arrived from Alicante. When it departed from the Pier de la Sal last week, bound for the port of Baltimore, 300 miles south of New York, it was eased out of Torrevieja waters by the harbor pilot boat and a tug. According to the consignee Álvaro Rodríguez she is one of the largest vessel to use the port of Torrevieja in the last five years.

FOUR MILLION EUROS FROM ORIHUELA COSTA LAND SALES uring the past year council owned land situated in Orihuela Costa has been sold by the Orihuela Council raising 4 million Euros which has been added to the coffers of the municipality. This figure is substantially less than originally anticipated, netting far less than a quarter of former values, but what else could be expected by selling land for construction when the economy is at the bottom of the biggest recession Spain has experienced in years! The land that has been sold had been reserved for various projects deemed important to improve the non-existent amenities of Orihuela Costa. However the present administration based in Orihuela and totally blasĂŠ about the population living on the coast, decided in their wisdom that the land was surplus to requirements and would raise much needed revenue that could be invested in new projects. Apparently, the 4 million Euros raised from the sale cannot be used to plug holes in budgets that have been mismanaged but is earmarked for developing improved infrastructure and capital projects to improve the community. So can the long neglected and deprived residents of Orihuela Costa expect that they will see some much needed council spending actually being spent for the inhabitants of the coast? If the land sold had been reserved by past administrations for building projects for the benefit of the community of Orihuela Costa then surely the money

raised by selling off these valuable assets of Orihuela Costa should be spent on Orihuela Costa. Well, as can be expected the coast will be lucky if it even secures 40% of the money, and this amount will only be earmarked for the coast if councillors honour long agreed promises about public spending, something that history has shown is something is very unlikely. The greedy councillors from the tiny villages and the city of Orihuela who have consistently ignored the needs of coastal residents have all had their sticky little hands out fighting for their share of this windfall. The tiny village of La Aparecida with its small population of far less than 4000 people is expected to see the completion of its cultural centre which is predicted to cost another 700,000 Euros to complete, this is in addition to the high cost of building the centre! Clearly this tiny village is more significant and important than Orihuela Costa, which only has a population of 33,500 people and already contributes a hugely disproportional amount of revenue to the income of Orihuela. This tiny village is seen as more important and deserving of public spending than the entire coastal region. If a village with such a small population requires a cultural centre, even though it is less than 7.5 kilometres from the wealth of services of Orihuela city and is linked to it by public transport why isn't a cultural centre deemed essential for Orihuela Costa that is over 33 kilometres

distant with virtually no public transport links? Is this a case of the coastal residents being invisible and discriminated against? Money raised from the sale of Orihuela Costa assets should be spent on Orihuela Costa. The rate payers and businesses of Orihuela Costa

have a right to expect that they have council services equal to the inhabitants of Orihuela city that now has a population equal to the coast. Make sure you fight for equality. Register to vote and use your vote to stop this blatant discrimination of Orihuela Costa.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Who am I to judge? These five words are perhaps the five most powerful and significant words spoken by Pope Francis since he became leader of the Catholic Church. Although I am not a Catholic, I do not automatically respect the leader of any Church or organisation, unless they have earned it through not only their words but, most importantly, their actions. However, these words spoken whilst addressing the issue of gay men and women in the Church did make me sit up and listen. Judging others is perhaps one of the easiest and most destructive things that expats indulge in. Many expats write to tell me of their damaging experiences with other expats when arriving in their new country. They arrive full of anticipation and hope for a new life in their chosen country, only to be met by cynicism and suspicion from the ‘established’ experts living in their communities. Many expats tell me of the ‘expat pecking order’ that has quickly established itself in the expat ghettos of the Costas. Instead of a warm welcome, many expats tell me that they witness a degree of hostility upon their arrival. A seemingly innocent welcome drink

with the neighbours is often followed by a barrage of questions designed to draw out the personal circumstances, fortunes and health of the aspiring expat. Of course, psychologists will tell us that this destructive inquisitiveness is a way that expats defend their existing, and often hard won, territories, image and position in the community. As with any animal grouping, these expats fiercely defend their rights against a possible intruder should they feel threatened in any way. All communities quickly develop spokesmen and leaders within their community. Often this is a good thing, but only if fulfilled with humility and tolerance. I recall one self-appointed spokesman for a newly built block of apartments that we were living in when we first moved to Spain. Each block of apartments should have a ‘Community’, which is a legal entity designed to govern and oversee the maintenance, cleanliness of the shared areas, as well as the rights of owners of the apartments. In our case, this did not happen, and a forthright and outspoken German lady stepped in to fulfil this role. During some of those dreadful days when the lift was not working, the electricity and water was disconnected and repairs were needed, this community spirited lady took on the fight with builders, the Town Hall, water and electricity companies. She bullied, argued and cajoled to do what was right for all of the residents living in the apartment. In the end, she won and we were all exceedingly grateful to her. I contrast this to another case that I have recently heard of, whereby a long term British expat woman, married to a Spanish man, maliciously gossiped about her neighbours, whom she did not like, and claimed that they were responsible for a number of local burglaries. She had no evidence, but the seed of doubt that she planted into the minds of some expats created a situation whereby she skilfully began to turn the entire street against one particular family, whom she did not approve of, and had a personal vendetta against. Quite simply, neighbours believed what she said simply because she had lived in Spain for many years and could speak the language fluently. She felt that this distinction gave her the right to be appointed as sole judge and jury. More

astute neighbours began to ask questions, but the damage had already been done, because the seed of doubt had been sown. All communities can become potentially destructive and the expat community is no different to any other. Lack of understanding of language and culture, as well as undeserved respect for those that have been in the country longer may make the newly arrived expat complacent as to what is right and what is wrong. It is important that all expats retain an open mind, determine what is right and wrong for themselves, and not be easily influenced by established expats who see themselves as top of the ‘pecking order’. ‘Who am I to judge?’ asked the Pope. For once, I agree wholeheartedly with him. Orihuela Councillor Carolina Gracia attended the Valencia District Court number 19 last week where she accused Alberto Fabra, President of the Generalitat of Valencia, of slander for remarks he made following the decision of the Orihuela Council of Elders not to accept a notion of censure late last year from the local Partido Popular group. Fabra said that in overturning the motion that the Council, formed of Carolina Gracia and Bob Houliston, had committed an act of “dishonesty and obstruction." Ms Gracia is insisting that Rabra withdraw his words otherwise she says that she will pursue her legal action.

PILAR GETS FLAG RECOGNITION Pilar de la Horadada has joined a total of 112 other municipalities in Spain by having its flag recognised by the Generalitat. The 2:3 oblong proportioned flag of red and green, split vertically half way, features the tower, almost identical in design to that of Torrevieja which was destroyed in the 1829 earthquake, in gold on a red background, along with the cross of Santiago on a green background. The flag can be seen throughout the municipality as a symbol of all things great about this small Costa Blanca town and its own growth through recent years.

FREE VEHICLE CHECKS BY MAPFRE

LORENTE LOSES APPEAL IN CORRUPTION CASE

The former mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, has lost a pre-trial appeal which she hoped would have avoided criminal charges for alleged irregularities in the award of a contract relating to building work at a plaza in the town of El Escorratel. The provincial court has rejected a plea to suspend the case, and so the trial against both Lorente, along with Antonio Rodríguez Murcia formally from the infrastructure department, will now be able to proceed. This particular case, which is not the only one being considered by the courts, was first brought to light following a complaint by the Los Verdes party in 2010. Lorente and Murcia are facing criminal proceedings for an alleged crime of forgery of public documents by a public authority or official and gross negligence. The work on maintaining the plaza at El Escorratel in July 2008 is said to have begun without the project having been approved by the municipal council, subsequently seeing the 34,380 euro contract awarded to a company prior to the legally required tender process being fulfilled. The prosecution believe that documents may have also been altered to make the award appear legitimate, and so the anti-corruption prosecutor is requesting fines of 4,500 euro, as well as the suspension of public office for ten months. Although no longer fronting the Partido Popular in Orihuela, Lorente is still a prominent political position and is still part of the newly formed PP and CLR coalition who are attempting to overthrow the government of Orihuela and return to power.

BIGASTRO HEALTH CENTRE GETS BACK ITS NIGHT COVER

Having been closed down for over a year, the town of Bigastro will once again have emergency health cover at night, when the service resumes on the 1st of March.

Antonio Ángel Hurtado, the head of the health council and mayor of Almoradí, made the announcement this week, that despite the closure due to cuts to health budgets by the national government since taking office, “the sta-

bility of public finances” now means that the service can resume. Hurtado wanted to make it clear that the decision is not as a result of the countless public protests, nor is it as a result of opposition political groups campaigning for the needs of healthcare in the area, and the decision is not “to get medals”, but “we have had many meetings to get restore service”. Hurtado strongly criticized the PSOE led demonstrations demanding that the service be resumed, especially the criticism already levied towards the PP mayor of the town for not supporting public health needs. In fact, the PP mayor of the town, Charo Bañuls, has now come forward saying that he never agreed with the closure and has repeatedly asked for its reopening. Stability in public finances is seemingly creating a more stable situation for Spain, likely to be ever more apparent as the country creeps closer to the next elections.

FLU EPIDEMIC SHOWS POSITIVE DECLINE Data released on Friday confirms that for the third consecutive week, recorded between the 10th and the 16th of February, there has been a decrease in the number of reported cases of influenza. The current figure is 101.45 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants, with a mixture of A(H1N1)pdm09 at 59% of all cases, and A(H3) with 41%. There has been an increase in cases in the north of Spain, where weather conditions have also been poor, with Asturias, north of Aragon and the east of Catalonia seeing more cases. So far 1,844 people have been confirmed as hospitalized with a severe case of influenza in all communities and there have been 189 deaths. Of those

who have died, 82% were over 44 and 48% were over 64, whereas 94% suffered from a chronic disease and 65% had not been vaccinated.

17th February & week 21 saw yet again a change in the league top spot and is the closest that I can remember with 10 teams within 4 points. This week John’s Catorce jumped to the top with their win over Val’s Voles with all 3 pairs winning 2 games each. Peter’s Sportsman dropped 3 places after their close loss to Brian’s Galea “B” and after 5 successive wins, with 2 pairs from each team winning 2 games each. For the 2nd week running Jim’s Siesta Sharks lost 2-7, this time against Richard’s Ospreys who had Bob & Pat on form with 3 wins. Dorothy’s Magpies had a very close win over Steve’s Steakhouse with both teams having 2 pairs with 2 wins each. Brian’s Jaguars slipped up against John’s Lo Crispin who had all 3 pairs with 2 wins each. Ayliff’s Galea “A” slipped silently from 2nd place against my Falcons with our 3 pairs winning 2 games each. Shirley’s Jays took the biggest beating of the night against Mary’s Peacocks who had 2 pairs winning 3 games each but only moving up 1 league place. Finally Derek’s Robins let Keith’s Merlins get their 6th win but still stuck in bottom place even though 2 pairs had 2 wins each. Ron Sheldon

SAILING MAR MENOR

More success for Torrevieja Tennis Club with Nicolas Kuhn picking up the European Team Tennis Title as a member of the German National team Nicola is currently training at the academy Equelite Juan Carlos Ferrero and as the German ranked number one player was the star of the tournament winning all of his matches. In the final he overcame the current European number one, Russian Alen Avizdba by 7-5 and 6-4. With this result Nicolas moves up to No. 2 in the European U-14 rankings.

The Autumn Series threw up a few challenges, races cancelled due to weather, lack of support boat, other events being held at the venue, pushing the race back another week. But, in the end the races that were held, were enjoyed by those competing. The trophies were keenly contested with two boats battling for first place. Don Clark in his Hartley and a Balaton Boat helmed by Bob Miles. Had there been another race the result could have been reversed, but in the end the Balaton won the series with Don in third place, pipped by a Shoestring. A photograph of the winning Balaton helms and crews, (left to right, Terry Chapman, Carole Sibson, Bob Miles and Robert Hudson) All boats are now receiving some attention in readiness for the Spring Series which is due to start on 16th March 2014. The Sailing season culminated in a Christmas Supper at Lorenzos in Pilar where members were entertained by The Reef Band, some members of which are also SAMM members. The entertainment was superb and certainly added to a very successful evening. The Commodore thanked members for their support and was pleased to announce that HAH would benefit from over 200€ SAMM sails all year round, new members are always welcome, a choice of groups to join from radio controlled to cruisers with dinghies, day boats and a catamaran as well as the latest acquisition, a motor boat, for those who prefer motors to sails. The Eagles meanwhile dropped a home point to a very capable Hub Hyenas, recently back to full strength after Joe Miller´s arrival from the UK. The Meerkats remain unbeaten and now have an unassailable cushion of legs should results not go their way, legs determining final positions. The Porters narrow away victory to the Pint Depot Kings keeps them in fifth place but closing the gap on the four above them. Match of the week featured the Eagles entertaining the Hyenas from the Hub. Both Miller and John Walker returned from prolonged stays in the UK to once again produce the goods for their respective sides. Miller hit a 116 in the opening leg, setting up Andy Brooker D18 to take an early lead. Not to be outdone, Walker´s response was immediate in the second hitting 100,125 and 32 out to level. Cyril Harrison´s 105 allowed Lee Holtham a chance at 52 which was converted in two darts, D16 finishing the 701. Walker teamed up with Eddie Klimonis in the first pair, against Miller and Brooker. Some great scoring followed, Klimonis and Miller hitting tons, but it was Walker with the opportunity of first out which he did on S20,D20 for 2 all. Harrison popped in D2 in the fifth despite a 121 from Stuart Clark. A 140 from Hyena Holtham in the third pair and last before the break, looked likely to give the visitors a lead. It didn’t happen as Jim Storey found D16 to make it all square with 6 singles to play. Miller, not unsurprisingly was chosen to go first in the second half by captain

Simon Williams. Having first throw Miller promptly planted a 140, Clark´s response of 100 was followed by nip and tuck scores from both. Reversing the advantage of throw it was Eagle Clark on D16 to give the hosts a lead for the first time in the match. Klimonis 140 made it 5-3 against Brooker. The tide then turned in favour of the Hyenas as an in form Shaun Smith hit D10 after excellent scores of 140 and 125 against captain Den Hall 119. Walker followed with throw against Harrison. As you would expect tons were traded but it was Harrison who completed his 501 first hitting D18 to level 5-5. A lively Williams couldn’t make the advantage of throw count against Kevin Wood, who steadied himself to hit 2x100 and D18 to ensure the point and distinct possibility of an outright victory. Storey faced Holtham in the final leg shoot out. A massive 158 from Holtham knocked the stuffing out of the laid back Eagle which gave the first opportunity at a double for Holtham who took out D8 to level a real see-saw match and shared spoils. Porterhouse made it 4 on the trot, after a tight tussle with the Kings from Pint Depot, who have also faired well on the oche of late. The Kings opened up the scoring via Ian Sleath S15,D15 despite a 140 from Ray Hayes and a 95 from Sue Sanderson. Some good but not explosive scoring from both sides in the second ended when Ray Sanderson hit D9 to level. The Porters outscored their opponents in the third, but couldn’t finish, however Hayes redeemed the situation to complete the leg and take the lead. Sleath and Dave Wright D8 made it all square only for captain Sanderson and Brian Nash D20 to sneak the lead. Some excellent scoring in the first double from Peter Ayres 80,81,100 and the better looking Sanderson, wasn’t enough to prevent the Kings levelling via Martyn Bynorth, partner Gary Minor hitting a ton. Hayes opened the second half with a 125 and finishing double, followed by Nash finishing his leg for a two leg advantage against a free scoring Frankie Wurrorck 100. Ayres ensured the draw on D20 in his match v. Wright with the Kings needing all remaining 3 legs to gain a valuable point. Minor played his part next acquitting himself well with three 80 pluses and a D20 to give the Kings a chance at 6-4. A nervy 11th leg was completed by Porters captain Ray Sanderson on D9 for two points and their tenth victory this season. Matt Cummins completed the match, winning the Kings fifth leg but a narrow defeat. Gogarty´s got back to winning ways after their recent run of good form was marred last week by the Hub Hyenas. Bliss Wright got the home side off to a flyer with D9, both sides scoring well in the team game. Lorraine Cox and Debbie Wright performed well in the second leg but it was John Linton doing the damage for the Gophers hitting 120 and D17 for a 2-0 lead. Richard Patterson continued where he left off in the team game with some consistent throwing, eventually pegging out on D4. A smart move from captain Gail Todd placed Patterson first in the doubles, with Elaine Willis. The former was in fine fettle sharing the scoring with partner Willis and completing the leg on D16. Some impressive scoring from Todd and Cynthia Jevons looked ominous for the Queens in the fifth leg, but Vi Turner dug deep and converted her own fine throwing into D15 for the Royal ones opening leg. Bliss Wright and Linton wrapped up the first half with a win and a 5-1 score line. Veteran Ernie Wilson was Todd´s first choice in the singles and lived up to his recent good form. He hadn’t reckoned however, on Queen Wright´s recent run of form. Requiring D10, her second dart found the centre of the double enabling the Royal family to sing their rendition of Agadoo´s we´ve got two. The second single pitched Merit table toppers Cynthia Jevons against Lorraine Cox.

MICK THE GRIP ‘REACHES OUT’ FOR THE SNIP Local golfer Mick Reeves - known to his friends as Mick the Grip recently completed a charity hair cut to raise money for Torrevieja Charity Reach Out. With the slogan of “Helping the Homeless and Needy” Reach Out try to help anyone in need, irrespective of race, creed or status, by providing basic food, clothes, blankets, bedlinen, household items and furniture and by giving support in every way they can to someone in need. Reach Out is an entirely voluntary organisation and 100% of all donations benefit the homeless and poor. They are always in need of all sorts of items for babies and children; clothes, toys, shoes, baby food, baby toiletries, in fact virtually anything for children of all ages. But above all they are in desperate need of money for the purchase of

a van to enable them to collect larger items and also assist with deliveries, and it was for this specific purpose that Mick the Grip chose to have his hair cut. His initial aim was to raise 500 euros, but such was the support from local bars and golf societies that the figure swiftly rose to the amazing amount of 1975 euros. Since the picture was taken even more money has been donated to the cause bringing the total to over 2000 euros, and make the van purchase a certainty rather than just a dream. Jevons enjoyed first throw, which proved crucial as both players found high scores relatively easy to come by. Both girls had opportunities but it was the Gopher who found D3 for an important psychological merit table advantage. Wins from Gophers Willis, Wright and Patterson followed, with John Linton completing the match on a ton and D20. A reasonable tally of 15 tons or more were amassed by the Meerkats when they entertained the Tavern in their local derby. Two decent performances from the Meerkats by way of Pat Abrams, 5x100 and a 120, the latter going for a 140 out hitting T20,T20 and wiring the D10 and Paul Durrant hitting the ¨full house¨ of four game shots, although Ivan Jones his singles opponent will be rueing his missed opportunities of spoiling the achievement. It was 4-2 at the break with Kat John Eyre 140,100 and 95 performing well. Jones 100,100,D16 and Mike Snow D4 replying for the Taverners. Snow 100,D16 was the only winner in the singles for the visitors, Lee Maiden making it 3 tons and 2 doubles for the night, Graham Todd nailing D20 to add to an earlier 117. Around the league Busters move to within a point of the Eagles after a high scoring match entertaining the Hunks. A suntanned Mark Filer was back to form with a 121 and 140, team mates Ray Harvey 100,123, Peter O´Rourke 100,123, with the latter narrowly missing a 152 out to leave D8. How the Hunks didn’t get anything from this match is anyone´s guess. George Mint accumulated 100,112,115,121 and 125, Steph Simpson 100,119,137 and Joe Hawkins 100,120. Simpson added two winning doubles and young Jamie McCulloch 105 representing his parents Stewart and Julie currently cruising in the Caribbean, taking out Shirley Roberts and being awarded man of the match status by the Busters side. The Honeys claimed victory over Madigans, Simone de Lacy defeating Lea Chesworth on D16 to win both points and a fifth league win. Ray Green starred for the Honeys gaining three winning doubles but denied a fourth by the useful Karl Cooper on D5. Both de Lacys achieved singles wins, Simone 107, Phil 100 with Tracey Simpson 140 and Green 100, contributing to the Honeys success. The hosts awarded man of the match status to Sonya Cooper for her doubles and singles victories. Tina Kaylor enjoyed a last leg win over Simpson. The Pirates of PB´s played well enough to earn a point when they hosted Breakaways this week. A 3-3 half time score line increased to 4-3 by John Lane on D20 victory looking decidedly promising. Mike Smith 120,125 defeated Gilly Kirby, who had earlier taken out 56 on D11 with husband Terry in the doubles. Sarah Simpson took the ninth leg and fifth for Breakaways, victory now slipping from the Pirates hands. Michelle Lane reversed the trend on D8 in her match against Jay Sharp who was being serenaded by his team mates singing a Jason Donovan (who?) track. It didn’t work but it did for Michelle as the match was now drawn at 5 apiece. Carl Wilson D17 and Mike Smith D9 spoilt the Pirates aspirations for both points. SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB At the weekend we played our Drawn Valentine's Pairs in glorious sunshine; the final being played between Paula Eason and Dave McEwan against Carl Eagle and Eileen Potts with Carl and Eileen managing to overcome their worthy opponents. Congratulations to them as the oldest Valentines ever to win the trophy. Our photo shows, left to right, Eileen, Dave, Pauline and Carl . Many thanks to John Staden for the photo. Mention must be made of David "Davina" Young, who substituted for a lady at the last minute. He dressed the part and, sorry to say this, David, but you made a sexy substitute. On Monday, the Pulsars welcomed the San Luis Trekkers; the points were 6-8 and the winning rinks were Jan Farmer, Paul Thomas and Derek Farmer 16-12; Chris Parsons, Carl Eagle and Ann Eagle 19-8 and Ann Young, Cliff Plaisted and Mal Parsons 14-12. San Miguel emerged as winners, the winning rinks being Margaret Patterson, Jo Pering, Don Wheatley and Drew Gerrard 20-15; Shirley Verity, Mary Dyer, Sam Russell and Julian Pering 25-12. Our Apaches team played away against Vistabella Vikings. It was a very competitive afternoon, with the Apaches taking the game 6-2, the winning rinks being Chris Parsons, Brian Allen, John Staden and Mal Parsons 22-18; John Marshall, Nancy Campbell, Ann Eagle and Brian Errington 25-9. Bad luck to our third rink, who fought back valiantly, to lose by 1 shot on the last end.

The Southern League saw San Miguel Jaguars away to San Luis Lions and, yes, claws were out! In the event, San Luis emerged as victors by 6-8; the winning rinks for San Miguel being Paul Thomas, John Marshall and Peter Whitehall 24-11; Ann Young, Cliff Plaisted and Mal Parsons 14-11; and Jan Farmer, Johnny Raby and John Staden, by a magnificent pick-up of 6 shots on the last end to win 1817. Our Cougars entertained Emerald Isle Cavaliers at home, the winning rink was Frank Scotthern, Meg Brownlee and Mike Bayfield 16-15 and the drawn rink Sheila Errington, Chris Liddicoat and Brian Errington 13-13, the total points being 3-11.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Monday found both the Pintos and Broncos playing San Luis teams, with both home teams winning by good margins as to be expected. The Pintos were at home to San Luis Vulcans, taking the rinks by 5 to 1 and the total shots by an appreciable margin. Meanwhile the Broncos were away to San Luis Romulans and equally struggled to adjust to the San Luis mat, drawing one rink and losing the others whilst losing the shots by 70-142. HORADADA BOWLS CLUB After two good results on the last two Mondays we came down with a bump at home against Monte Mar Toreadors last Monday. We only managed to get four points in a 97 to 101 shot defeat. Our winning rinks were Alan Russell, Bryan Eatough and Ann Allen 22 – 13 and John Goddard, Ian Gillan and Terry Hucknall 26 – 8.John Hurlock rink led all the way through but got pipped over the last two ends. For this weeks Federation 4’s game was at home against Quesada. We drew the match 51 shots each but lost out on points by only gaining three. Well done to Rose Guppy, Roy Collins, Ann Allen and Terry Hucknall 21 – 10. Our Friday match was away at Greenlands when we managed to get four points. The Tues Roving Jack was won by Z Wilcock, J Wray & G Inwood, with S Gray, T Lemon & Jim Oliver finishing as runners up. Joan Oliver & John Wray beat Jim Wilcock & Jack Redfern to win the Australian 2-4-2. In the Fed 4s League, our two div 1 teams went head to head. Monday started with yet another great performance from the Albatrosses while the Eagles put up a good display but just lost out. The Albatrosses entertained Emerald Isle Moonrakers and strengthened their position at the top of the Discovery Division with a 12 points to 2 victory by 119 shots to 77. Excellent performances came from, Olwyn Ratcliffe, Les Barber and Ian Kenyon, Beryl Regan, Bill Corbishley and Richard Lee, Gail Willshire, Mac Maclean and Fred Willshire, Sheila Cox, Stuart Allman and Brian Dunn and Pat Williamson, Mike Cox and Jenny Bowman. The Eagles made the short trip to Greenlands to take on the Comets and despite a close shots difference of 93 to the Chestnuts 102 this resulted in a 9 points to 5 win to Greenlands. After a great start to the season the Vikings our Fed 4’s team had their second successive disappointing result on Thursday, losing at home to San Miguel by 43 shots to 62 and by 2 points to 6. Our only winners were Sheila Cox, Andy Leggatt, Les Barber and Mike Regan. Things didn’t get any better on Friday as both the Lanzadores and the Conquistadores lost by 10 points to 4. The Conquistadores entertained the Quesada Swifts and lost by 85 shots to 103, our only wins coming from, Leslie Prockter, Ken Savage and Brian Prockter and Doreen Leggatt, Jeff Austin and Jim Harwood. The Lanzadores made the trip to Monte Mar and went down by 97 shots to 108. Wins coming from Gail Willshire, Les Barber and Fred Willshire and Sheila Cox, Dane Howard and Bill Corbishley. EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB Two games to report in the Fed 4's for EI Leprechauns. The first, on 6 February, was an away game at La Marina with the Leprechauns winning 6 points to 2, 58 shots to 52. On 13 February a home game against San Miguel again resulted in a good win for the home team, 6 points to 2, 59 shots to 44. Guess we are on a roll! Valentines Day saw two teams from the Isle in action. The Cavaliers played a home game against visitors Mazarron Miners. With some rinks very close, the home side came out winners with 99 shots to 95 and 11 points to 3. The second game saw EI Outlaws visit the Raiders at El Rancho, the Raiders taking the game with 11

points to 3, 115 shots to 89. Not a good day for the Outlaws. On 17 February the Moonrakers had a hard game at Vistabella, who look like walking away with the League this season. The Moonrakers were holding their own on the trial ends, then the wheels came off with the home side winning on 5 of the 6 rinks, thus getting 12 points to our 2, and 119 shots to 77. Not a good day for the Moonrakers either. On the same day EI Titans visited San Luis to play the Klingons. However, the short journey didn't help them as the Klingons won 4 of the 6 rinks with a shot difference of 118 to 83 giving them a 10 points to 4 victory.

LA SIESTA BOWLS CLUB SABA Voyager and Enterprise Leagues. 17th Feb The Apollo’s played a morning home game against a very strong Quesada Pearls side but alas didn’t have anything to show for their endeavours. They lost all rinks and not surprisingly the shots 133-71. Score 14-0 Pearls. The Pioneers had another good win this week 8-6 away at the Emerald Isle. QUESADA BOWLS CLUB By Deidre Leeming Our Saba teams had mixed fortunes this week,, with the Diamonds only managing to win on two rinks at La Siesta, but an enjoyable game. Thanks to the reseves who turned up and played against each other. Better news for the Pearls who had a strong game against La Siesta Apollos where we won on all rinks and took the overall shots. Special mention to our reserves, Nick and Ruth Birch and John Bromley who turned up to support the squad. The Winter League were at home to our Northern friends Benitachell, always a tough game. Another good win for our team winning on four rinks and taking the overall shots. This gives us a significant lead in the League. Well done to our Berleen team who had another great win and enabled us to retain the Cup for the second year. Our Federated 4s squads are still putting in great performances with the Panthers winning on 2 rinks against San Luis Blues, but unfortunately failing to take the overall shots so a 4-4 result leaving us heading the division. Mention must be made of the great trick shot, played by skip Graham Phillips with his last bowl when laying match down, Graham sent his wood with great gusto hitting everything in it's path to take out the opposition bowl and lay 5 shots to win the rink. Well done to our Leopards team who had another great win away at Horadada, leaving us 10 points ahead at the top of the division. IN THE BUNKER WITH ‘MICK THE GRIP’ IN 1937 BING CROSBY was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and a 2 handicap golfer. To amuse his friends and to support the golf professionals he decided to hold his own pro am golf tournament in San Diego, putting up the $10,000 prize himself, and providing a Clambake afterwards. The first “Crosby Clambake” was won by Sam Snead. The weather was so atrocious that pro golfers still call intermittent squalls and gales ‘Crosby Weather, ’ but it was such a success it became an annual event. The war put the Clambake on hold, but In 1947 Bing revived and expanded it to four rounds played on three courses on the Monterey Peninsula, near San Francisco. His Hollywood golfing buddies all came to his eve of tournament party, with guests like Dean Martin and Bob Hope doing a turn. After that the ‘Clambake’ was shown on TV across America. Naturally, having a bunch of extroverts in front of the cameras meant the golf almost became secondary to the antics. LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY AT EL PLANTIO GOLF The game at El Plantio was our first major of the year and with a party of 38 members and guests were playing for 'The Claret Jug' so the stakes were high. We had heard varying reports about the state of the course and although they are doing some work to it, it was reasonably good. Some found the palm trees unforgiving and the water difficult to get over but by the end of the day there were plenty of smiles. Those smiling the most were: In first place and winner of the Claret Jug, Sue Smith with 34 points, congratulations. 2nd Danny McErlean with 30 pts. 3rd Norman Potter with 29 pts on countback. 4th Bob Berry with 29 pts. NTPs Scott Blair hole 7, John Dunnion hole 9, Sue Smith hole 12 (in 3 shots) and Brian Lin 2 shots). There were two 2s, Brian Smith and John Dunnion who received €16.50 each. The free game draw was won by Danny McErlean. The presentation took place in the evening at the Lo Crispin Tavern where we enjoyed a meal and were suitable entertained by Woody, who certainly got most people up dancing and singing. Thanks to the Tavern staff who always look after us very well and also to Brian Coultate who organised the evening festivities. LA RAMBLAS G.S. We started the week off with 5 clubs and a putter which was played in very difficult conditions. The winner with a very impressive 39 pts was John Wheeler. In second place was Terry Field with 35 pts and third was Annemarie Weisheit with 32pts. On Wednesday we had our second away day of the year at Villa Martin. Scoring was poor in the windy and dry conditions making it difficult to decide which club to use. The top scorer was Benedicte Kruse who won Category One on a count back from Bryan Neal with 31 pts. The performance of the day came from Rod Doel who scored a magnificent 40 pts but alas his team also comprising Heinz Lei, Ken Meredith and Lindsay Forbes were the ones beaten on count back. The winners on the day were Carole and John Wheeler, Terry Field and John Robertson.

Having beaten Paterna by 2-0 when they met at the Vicente Garcia earlier in the season Torrevieja went into this Sunday lunchtime fixture in buoyant mood at the Estadio Gerardo Salvador, despite the superior position and points tally of their opponents. However with Rafa and Gomez injured, Dani Meseguer out through suspension and keeper Carlos Moreno falling sick on the journey to the game, getting any sort of a result was always going to be an uphill task. Neither Obele nor Rafa were deemed to be fully match fit so they were both consigned to the bench and this really was a Torrevieja team made up of the bare bones. We might have thought that Paterna would compound the Torry misery by throwing everything at their visitors in the opening stages but the game actually got off to a very quiet start. It was not until the 10th minute that either side created any sort of opportunity when, from a Paterna corner, Carlos rose above the Torry defence to head over from close range. With the remainder of the half then largely occupying the midfield, play became somewhat frenetic and scrappy. A number of niggly challenges saw 5 players in the book by half time, Vicente and Micro for Torry, but as the players trotted into the break Carrion in the visitors goal had not had a save to make. Unfortunately the same case was being made at the other end by keeper Xenxo. In contrast the 2nd period started brightly for Torry with a half chance falling to Carrasco in the opening seconds. Unfortunately he wanted too much time and Josefi cleared the danger. The visitors were having a good period with a further opportunity falling to Dani Lucas who hit a fierce low drive just past the upright on 55 minutes. Both Fran and Tello then went close for the home side with Valdeolivas clearing off the line but as play then broke upfield a glancing header from Alexis could have won the points for the visitors as it went agonisingly just the wrong side of the post. The second period was certainly the more entertaining of the two and the draw, probably a fair reflection on how the game went.
