ALICANTE-ELCHE AIRPORT READY FOR A GREAT SUMMER TAKEOFF

The 2014 summer seasons looks set to offer a welcome relief to the tourism sector in Spain, with an anticipated increase in international visitors to the country, with the Costa Blanca looking to be in a particularly favourable position. The director of airport operator AENA, Santiago MartĂnez-Cava, has announced that AlicanteElche airport is already anticipating 10 million passengers by the end of the year. In this summer alone, which starts on the 30th of March, there are 8.3 million seats available to passengers, representing an increase of 2.8%. Europe is still the most popular destination of all aircraft movements, with around 40,000 of the anticipated 47,132 aircraft movements now scheduled at AlicanteElche covering the continent, an increase of 0.8% compared

to the summer of 2013, a total increase of 3% of all flights compared to last year, with some 80% of all passengers travelling from outside Spain, with an anticipated total of 7.2 million people travelling within Europe. The United Kingdom remains the top destination with 45% of total passenger traffic, although the number of seats for this summer has collectively dropped by 2.1%, the route from London Gatwick to Alicante-Elche has increased by 6%. Russia is the fastest growing destination, with a 68.4% increase in the supply of seats and a 70.3% increase in flights, with almost daily flights to Moscow and St. Petersburg, proving the delicateness and obvious concerns of the stability of the political situation in the country. The next biggest increase is Switzerland, with an increase of 24.8% of seats and 19% more flights, then Belgium with 14.9% more seats and 16.4% more flights. Continued on Page 2

Continued From Page 1 Flights to Algeria have also seen significant growth, with 29.5% more flights and a 43% increase in seats offered by Vueling on the route to Oran. In total, the annual movement with the North African country is 150,000 passengers, an increase from the 20,000 passengers just a few years ago, almost all linked to trade and business, and Algerians currently seen as being amongst the leaders in terms of foreign investment and the purchase of second homes. Germany is set to increase with 7.2% more seats and 6.2% more flights, with Norwegian Airlines covering new routes to Cologne, Hamburg and Munich, competing directly with Air Berlin. In total, this year sees an additional 15 routes added to the Alicante-Elche schedule, with two brand new destinations never before served from Alicante. Those new routes are to Santander in the north of Spain, where many domestic tourists live until they spend the summer at their costal homes, and Rome in Italy, both destinations being offered to

airlines with a huge discount to operators to encourage the growth of the routes. Domestic flights are also offering a positive forecast in the summer, with Ryanair reopening the route to Santiago de Compostela, closed in October 2013, and Vueling´s Santander route, collectively looking at carrying some 8,000 passengers. In addition, strengthened routes to Bilbao, as well as the Canary and Balearic Islands, are all offering a positive outlook. But, despite the growth forecast, there is one casualty in terms of passenger numbers, that is the flights covering the route between Alicante-Elche and the capital of Madrid, a route which did carry some 800,000 passengers, now barely appealing to 250,000 users per year, the vast majority of which are for interconnecting flights, a significant decline which has been put firmly on the conscience of the operator of the new high speed train link from the capital, seemingly offering a cheaper, and more direct service to the passengers who are now opting to take the train over the plane.

TORREVIEJA LOCAL POLICE GET TWO NEW VANS

Torrevieja local police have taken delivery of two new vans this week, the last two vehicles outstanding from the 734,368 euro lease for 17 vehicles to replace the existing fleet. Most of these cars can be observed on a regular basis parked outside the police station, never used. These new vehicles are specifically for use by the Grupo de Refuerzo Operativo (GRO) teams, have a 2 litre diesel engine, with 9 seats, GPS tracking devices and law enforcement tools. The delivery comes in the same week that the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, announced that the town hall has been granted permission to use one of the buildings in the harbour area which will be converted into an operational centre for the police. The building is just across the road from the former tourist information office situated at Plaza Capdepont in Torrevieja, which was converted into a police station in August, specifically for

use by the GRO operational task force, which was therefore subject to work to convert the building for use at an annual saving of 22,000 euro per year in rent, with the only cost being the refurbishment of that office for its 6 month life, and the cost to refurbish the new centre. In July of last year, the mayor also announced that the police administrative unit for foreigners currently based at the Parque del Molino de Torrevieja, will move to the new site on calle Arquitecto Larramendi, which has around three times the space of the previous office. Many of the operational police officers themselves have been complaining about lack of payment for overtime, particularly when working as part of the GRO teams, poor management, time and roster issues and other human resource matters, which have been highlighted through questions raised by the Los Verdes group in the plenary meeting. Officers have themselves staged a number of demonstrations over their working conditions.

ORIHUELA PP HEAD FERRANDO TO BE CHARGED IN CORRUPTION CASE The current head of the Partido Popular in Orihuela, Pepa Ferrando, is reported to have been charged with offences relating to alleged irregularities in the procurement of promotional material for the FITUR international tourism festival between 2008 and 2011, during her period as the councillor for tourism in the last administration of Orihuela. Pepa, left, with Monica Lorente

Although widely considered as nothing more than a front for Mónica Lorente, who faces corruption charges herself, Ferrando took over the role in Orihuela after Lorente had to stand aside to enable a member of the group who wasn´t facing corruption charges to lead the PP into the failed censure motion to overthrow the government, after the regional PP´s vow to clamp down on corruption within the party. Ferrando is the latest addition to the growing list of PP members of Orihuela facing corruption charges, and even this week, the mayor, Monseratte Guillen, called for action from the regional president, as even before this case has now come to light, five members of the Orihuela PP group are “accused and convicted of very serious crimes”. In line with the regional PP´s own rules, Ferrando would no longer be eligible as a candidate for mayor.

ORIHUELA LEADS THE WAY NATIONALLY IN REDUCTION OF UNEMPLOYMENT

he number of registered unemployed people in Spain fell in February, with a total of 1,949 people now finding work, compared to January, representing the first fall in February since 2007with a total of unemployed people now standing at 4,812,486. In addition to the drop in unemployment figures, the Social Security contributors increased by 61,557 people in February, with a total of 16,212,304 registered contributors. In a statement this week, the Minister of Employment and Social Security, Fátima Báñez, said that the labour market has already turned and is confident that increased membership in the Social Security system will continue, after increasing for the first time in a February since the crisis began. Meanwhile the PSOE spokesperson, Soraya Rodríguez, said that although the PSOE welcomes the fall in unemployment, there is “no cause for triumphalism”, because it is not a significant decrease. However, what is perhaps significant in the area known as the Vega Baja, a zone which is showing an increase in growth and unemployment that is far greater than the rest of Spain, it would seem. Considering that across the country, 1,949 unemployed people found work, almost a quarter of them are in this area, with the number of registered unemployed people dropping by 406 people during February. According to figures provided by the SERVEF

T

employment agency, 293 men and 113 women secured work in February, more than double the 202 people combined in February 2013. The area where the biggest drop in unemployment has been seen is Orihuela, where 73 people have found work, Almoradí is in second place with a drop of 63, Catral in third with 42 fewer unemployed workers, and then Torrevieja where 37 people have secured themselves a job, around half as many as Orihuela. However, it´s not all good news, as there are still a total of 37,564 people registered as unemployed, with Torrevieja leading the way with 10,596, and unemployment has increased in a small number of places, such as Cox, where an increase in 20 unemployed people has been registered, Pilar de la Horadada has increased unemployment by 4, and San Isidro and Daya Vieja both increasing by 2 workers losing their jobs. In terms of the total number of unemployed people in each area, Torrevieja has 10.596, Orihuela 7.405, Almoradi 2.820, Callosa De Segura 2.146, Pilar De La Horadada 1.601, Guardamar Del Segura 1.258, Redovan 1.183, Albatera 1.135, Bigastro 996, Catral 975, Dolores 889, Rojales 850, Benejuzar 671, Cox 639, San Fulgencio 570, Rafal 557, San Miguel De Salinas 537, Los Montesinos 485, Formentera Del Segura 405, Benijofar 262, Algorfa 248, San Isidro 247, Ranja De Rocamora 231, Jacarilla 213, Benferri 207, Daya Nueva 196 and Daya Vieja 42.

TORREVIEJA EYESORE FINALLY CLEARED BUT ONLY FOR DEVELOPMENT The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja has praised the town hall for cleaning an area in the heart of a residential zone, although they do point out that the action has only just been auctioned after 12 years of complaints from the residents. The site at the Lago Jardin I urbanisation has been an eyesore for over a decade, and has now been cleared by the municipal brigades, after two weeks of activities, but the residents may still not be too happy as the clearing is to make the plot suitable for building on, rather than conversion to a space of aesthetic quality. The neighbours themselves had attempted to prune back trees, remove weeds and overgrowing plants,

as well as having to face persistent clouds of dusts blown into their homes from the plot, but all of that will soon be a thing of the past, as the land is earmarked for the building of 200 social houses, having donated the land to the Generalitat Valenciana. The plot of land was the subject of a media tour conducted a short time ago by the Los Verdes, at the time when other areas of neglect were being highlighted, such as the Casa y Torre de Los Balcones. Although the need for social housing is important, and the site may now be clear and clean, it will only be a matter of time before the neighbours have to put up with further disruption as construction begins on the 200 anticipated homes, despite other social housing in the area remaining vacant.

UNIONS CLAIM POLICE SHIFT CHANGES A DISASTER

BIGASTRO TO BENEFIT FROM W ATER IMPROVEMENT WORKS The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, is offering seven and a half million euro for the tender of work to improve the supply of drinking water through Beniel and the municipality of Orihuela, with 80% of the funding coming from European grants.

The two Unions that represent Torrevieja’s Policia Local have both said that the recent shift changes implemented by local commanders to cover dates between 3 and 9 March have been little short of disastrous. They say that some shifts were duplicated while other areas of the city received no police coverage at all. Indeed according to the CCOO and Sipol, 20 officers were not assigned at all and now the unions are calling for the commanders responsible to be disciplined. The changes cover the local force which numbers 170 officers. The unions also say that the Councillor responsible is quite clearly responsible for a lack of leadership and poor management of the force.

TORREVIEJA TO EXTEND GARBAGE CONTRACT Despite being expected for the last ten years, Torrevieja town hall has been unable to begin the tender process for a new contractor to carry out waste collection in the city, and has therefore taken the option to extend the existing contract by up to another 12 months. As previously reported the plan to re-address the waste disposal needs of a city that has grown in 10 years wasn´t without disagreement, including threats of industrial action, but as the contract was believed to have been originally awarded incorrectly, as shown by the conviction of the former mayor of the city, Pedro Hernández Mateo, who was given 3 years in prison for his part in rigging the contract, it will now continue as before. There have been many technical and legal reports by city officials warning of serious breaches of the terms of the contract, and numerous calls for it to be terminated prematurely, none of which have been heeded by either the former mayor, or the current head of the city, Eduardo Dolón. Even now, 10 years after the award, when financial experts state that the contract cannot be maintained within budget, and that the equipment failures and performance issues will mean a poorer service in the future, there still has not been enough time to tender the contract for a replacement that could have meant an improvement in service, and a potential saving to the tax payer. This latest chapter in the story of a bleak history of the city has angered many, and resulted in accusations of incompetence of the government team, as well as their ability to manage the procurement process.

The project involves the construction of a new network of pipes, tanks and machinery in the town of Beniel, where residents have faced years of poor supply to to the antiquated infrastructure in place. As a result of the work, the supply of water will be significantly improved in the towns of Bigastro, and the pedanias in the south west of the city of Orihuela, including Hurchillo, Arneva and Desamparados. A new “buffer” reservoir will serve those towns, constructed from reinforced concrete and have a capacity of 5,100 cubic meters, to be located in the El Mojón area of the Sierra del Cristo, to the south of Beniel, in the municipality of Orihuela. The delivery network will include 14 kilometres of new pipelines, 11.5 kilometres of which will be around Bigastro, and 3 kilometres in the Beniel area, connected by branch pipelines to the existing network. The works, which is overseen through the Canales del Taibilla operation, will have a lead time to completion of within 12 months. Canales del Taibilla provides drinking water to 79 municipalities in the regions of Albacete, Alicante and Murcia, serving 2.4 million inhabitants normally, increasing to 3 million people in the summer.

WORK NEARS COMPLETION ON LOCAL PR OJECTS The new footbridge over the N-332 road at La Regia will be officially opened on Monday at noon by the Mayor of the municipality, Monseratte Guillén, bridging the gap for many a resident who have suffered for years waiting for the promise of a safe passage to be realised. IN addition, the footbridge over the AP-7 motorway near to the new school has been put in place this week, with each half being dropped into position on two consecutive nights, set to open in a matter of weeks, and the third bridge over the motorway near to the Zenia Boulevard has also made considerable progress, collectively all on target to open, on schedule, by the end of the month. The new bridge across the AP7 linking Playa Flamenca with Villamartin

willing to assist in easing the problem. The provision of additional parking in the area has also begun, with new glass recycling bins replacing those located in the car park where the taxi rank is located, thus freeing up some parking spaces, and the cabin will be removed shortly to provide more. The ministry responsible for the N-332 road has also now granted permission for aesthetic work to be carried out on two of the main roundabouts on the southern entrance to the Orihuela Costa, which have become shoddy looking over recent years. According to the councillor for the coast, the ministry had previously authorised the work to take place, but it had never been actioned by the town hall. Therefore, the permission process had to start again to enable the current team to carry out the work.

on residentes@orihuela.es, and the town hall will consider those suggestions. A new feature is being installed at the municipal workshop located on Calle Arco Iris on the Orihuela Costa, which will enable the town hall workers to grow their own plants and flowers, which can subsequently be used for improving the image of the coast, at a minimum cost to the public purse. Plants and flowers will be grown from seeds at the facility, and then planted around the area as workers go about their usual maintenance tasks.

Permission has also been granted by the coastal department for the town hall to carry out work to repave the Paseo Maritimo at Punta Prima. This work had also been delayed after the current councillor had to reapply for permission, but it will now go ahead, although in stages so as to minimise the disturbance during the work, which will not be finished until after Easter, due to the enormity of the project. This work is being funded by a developer who gave a commitment to provide additional funding as part of their deal to build a commercial centre.

Planning work on improving the access in the La Zenia area which aims to reduce traffic on the N-332 roundabout is continuing to progress. The engineers have now created the next stage of plans, which will be informally presented to the ministry this week, including the miniroundabout at the access road to the pending emergency centre, then formally proposed, on the condition that they are suitable. Similarly, the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has now arranged for a meeting with the senior management of the Consum supermarket chain, which will take place on Tuesday, to see if they are

Similarly, at the end of this week, the coastal councillor, Martina Scheurer, advised The Leader that, “We also have received the missing authorisation of the Ministry of Costas to allow us to build the piece of the Paseo Maritimo which is missing in Cala Capitán on the left side.” Town hall staff are currently in the process of trying to repair and replace elements of street furniture and fixtures, including items such as the new ping-pong tables and benches. Where broken benches are found, they are being replaced or repaired, and where there are areas with too many benches, consideration is being given to relocate them to more suitable sites. The councillor for the coast is also interested to hear from any residents who would like to suggest a location for a new bench, by contacting the International Residents office in the town hall,

The councillor for the coast, and other representatives from the town hall, joined with their colleagues from across the Costa Blanca at an official ceremony held in Benidorm on Friday, in which the municipality collected their “Q” for quality flags, the first awards to be collected prior to the 2014 summer season. The tenders for operating the chiringuito beach bars on the Orihuela Costa have now been accepted, after administrators checked the validity of those who entered. The next formal meeting where the tenders are opened will take place this week. The two previous objections filed with the town hall have been rejected, as the quality standard clause is not as restrictive as believed, as it does allow for operators to have quality standards “similar to” those mentioned.

FENOLL CASE STARTS AFTER DEFENDANT NO-SHOW DELAY he trial against one of the most famous businessmen in Orihuela, Ángel Fenoll, along with 17 other people including a former Albatera PP councillor Francisco Javier Bru, for offenses against the Treasury and forgery of commercial documents began on Thursday after a two day suspension due to the failure of one of the defendants to attend court.

T

Lawyers arriving at the Courts with boxes of documentation to be used as evidence On Tuesday, at the request of the Prosecutor, Pablo Romero, the judge ordered the immediate search and arrest of Manuel López Poveda, in order to guarantee his appearance at the trial postponed until Thursday. The Prosecutor is demanding 36 years imprisonment for the main defendant, Ángel Fenoll, for 11 offenses against the Treasury and a continuing offense of falsification of a commercial document, in a case relating to tax evasion worth in the region of 4 million euro. According to the letter from the prosecutor, false

invoices were filed “in order to hide the true result of the activity” of the two companies, Colsur and Proambiente, and “defraud the Treasury” by avoiding paying corporate tax and for the years 2002, 2003 and 2004. Fenoll was sentenced to prison in 2007, with 300,000 euro bail, as part of the now infamous “Brugal” case, which is linked to a number of members of Orihuela´s Partido Popular, including former Mayor, Mónica Lorente. A witness testament in a court hearing in 2007 stated that Fenoll played a “decisive part” in the municipal campaign that led to Monica Lorente becoming mayor of Orihuela in 2007. During the previous administration of the PP government in 2011, spokesperson for the liberal CLR group, Pedro Mancebo, was also vocal in criticising the relationship between the town hall and Fenoll, asking “What power does this entrepreneur have in our City?”, whilst accusing the then government team, with whom he has now sided in opposition, of yielding to pressures from Fenoll to pay off 5 million euro in debts, questioning why a payment plan was agreed with Fenoll, “when other entrepreneurs have to wait years” in order to collect their debts, whilst Fenoll is free to meet with the Mayor, and seemingly had “free entry into the City to negotiate”. The court adjourned the hearing on Thursday, resuming on Monday, after Fenoll´S lawyer, José Celestino, asked for a large amount of evidence to be dismissed, on account of administration anomalies. The defence also state that the large proportion of companies cited in the case did not have sufficient time to prepare their accounts, and so that evidence should also be inadmissible. The judge will decide on the appropriate course of action upon resumption of the trial. According to the considerations of the prosecution, the false invoices were “entirely made up by the other defendants” with them documenting the provision of services or delivery of goods “for the Colsur and Proambiente entities that had not been made”, and that Fenoll “facilitated” the issuing of the documents in order to avoid payment.

ORIHUELA MAYOR CALLS FOR ACTION BY PP PRESIDENT FABRA The mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, has this week urged the president of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra of the Partido Popular, to intervene and takes action against the five members of the Orihuela PP group who are “accused and convicted of very serious crimes”.

The call came after rumblings throughout the PP group indicate that a number of members of their own party are both disappointed and concerned about the lack of action from a president who had both vowed to clean up his party, and had previously said that no member of his group who had been accused of corruption could represent the party in the future. The latest discrepancies arose after Fabra called on the councillor for tourism, Milagrosa Martínez, to resign from her seat in Valencia as she was facing a trial in connection with the infamous Gürtel case, one of the biggest corruption investiga-

tions in Spain´s history. Fabra had also said that he would not force the move and would not take any action on the continuity of her role in her local position in Novelda. Martínez faces 11 years in prison when she attends the trial later this month. In a statement, Fabra confirmed that there are guidelines for those facing corruption charges and that he is dealing with it at regional level, but locally, “it must be the local group to take that decision”. The president of the PP in Valencia, Alfonso Rus, argued in favour of Fabra´s lack of action, stating that he believes that a politician should not be forced to leave office “whilst not guilty”. In an impromptu address to the media, Guillén pointed out that amongst the group who have been trying to remove him and his team from governing, “there are five accused and convicted of very serious crimes”, urging Fabra to “take the decision”, especially given the fact that it is almost half of the PP trying to take over in Orihuela who are in the position, but criticising Fabra´s stance, “how is he going to take action in the city of Orihuela?” When asked about the progress of the censure motion, Guillén affirmed that this is “in the courts”, but also pointed out how his team are doing a good job at managing the municipality, and that “corruption has been banished, honesty is what prevails”.

FIVE PERCENT FEWER CRIMES IN 2013

MERCADONA INCREASE PROFITS AGAIN Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has made 515 million euro profit in 2013, marking a new record in the current times of financial crisis, making 7 million euro more than 2012.

he Director General of Police in Spain, Ignacio Cosidó, has reported to the Senate Committee to detail crime and policing statistics for 2013. Over the past year, reported crimes and misdemeanours dealt with by the National Police have declined by almost 5%, whereas police efficiency has increased by 2%, with Spain now classed as being amongst the safest countries in Europe. However, major offences have shown even more of a drop last year, with homicides and murders falling by almost 15%, crimes against sexual freedom fell by 8% in 2012 and another 1% last year, and robberies with violence or intimidation fell 12%. There has however been an increase in one sector of criminal activity, with burglaries rising by 5%, but through new initiatives to combat this sort of crime, January 2014 has already seen a reverse in the trend, according to Cosidó. Cosidó also explained how the “fight against terrorism is a permanent priority” for the National Police, who are continuing to battle to achieve the complete disappearance of terrorist activities, explaining how “The National Police has developed 29 activities last year that allowed for the arrest of 455 people”, all in connection with terrorism, both domestic and international. During 2013, there were 719 investigations relating to organised criminal groups involved in trafficking, money laundering, fraud and similar activities, resulting in 386 gangs being broken up. A total of 4,121 people were arrested for their links to organized crime. Officers confiscated 157 real guns, 98 blank firing or compressed air weapons, 188 knives, almost 10,000 rounds, 662 cars, 55 trucks and 68 trailers or boats, and almost 20 million euro in various denominations and currencies. Cosidó also spoke of the fight against trafficking of drugs, both nationally and internationally, and that during 2013 officers have seized 12,546 kilos of cocaine, almost 18% more than in 2012, 124 kilos of heroin, 115,652 kilos of hashish, 2,239 kilos of marijuana, more than 8,200 kilos of cannabis plants, 100,075 units of Ecstasy and

T

The company presented their annual results this week, showing how they had taken nearly 20 billion at the tills, an increase of 4% on last year. The president of the company, Juan Roig, had to backtrack on forecasts that the company would make 15% less in 2013, despite their 508 million euro profit in 2012. Roig, the fourth richest man in Spain, also pointed out how the company infrastructure has remained stable, with 74,000 workers who had received 257 million euro in target related bonuses, representing 25% of gross profit.

1,212 doses of LSD. There were 2,773 activities relating to human trafficking operations in 2013, including illegal immigration or counterfeit documents, resulting in 6,565 people being detained, 7.7% more than in 2012. In the fight against trafficking and sexual exploitation, there was a 23.8% increase, with 970 arrests, thanks to new initiatives in place in that field during the last year. There has also been a marked increase in promotional campaigns run through schools, with officers from the National Police presenting nearly 13,000 lectures and informational activities for students, parents and teachers in over 5,800 schools. The talks covered subjects such as Internet threats, bullying, drug abuse, violence or gangs and are aimed at prevention and awareness and were accompanied by the dissemination of more than 126,000 leaflets and 2,400 posters. Similar awareness and reassurance actions have taken place at senior centres around the country, with some 691 informal talks being presented, whereas there has also been 3,526 meetings with public and private institutions involved in tourism, aimed at tackling this sector of vulnerable visitors. Cosidó closed his speech by detailing how the commitment to modern policing strategies lies with three basic pillars: intelligence, technological innovation and international cooperation. By expanding their activities trough social networks and modernisation of control rooms, it is hoped that the police are able to deal with incidents and enquiries far faster than ever before, whilst being able to tackle potential problems before they occur.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

“I really do like our magnificent Spanish paella pan”.

It’s a Brit Thing All nationalities have their own funny little ways of doing things, and the British are no exception to the rule. Indeed, I sometimes think that, as a nation, we tend to go out of our way to be awkward and to do things rather differently from the rest of Continental Europe. This is not deliberate of course, it just happens that way. Let me give you a few examples. As an expat, I will never get used to continental electricity plugs, sockets and light fittings. They look positively dangerous to me. I am used to those good, solid three pin plugs with a green earth wire for good measure. That green wire is just so reassuring. Used throughout the UK and Ireland, they look and feel much safer that the flimsy two pin efforts that are used in Europe. Mind you, even they are sublime design creations when compared to the flimsy prongs to be found on electric plugs in the US and Canada. Where did they get that idea from? As for light fittings, just don't get me started on that one. I managed to electrocute myself a few weeks ago whilst changing a light bulb in our bathroom. I have never previously switched off electricity at the mains before just changing a light bulb, but apparently I should have done. Silly me, I thought that when the light switch was ‘off’ no electricity was coming through the circuit. Apparently this is not the case over here, and I am fortunate that I was only standing on a low pair of steps at the time, and did not have my hands in water. Anyway, it did give the electrician a few laughs when he checked out our circuitry. Not only is our system in perfect condition, but I was then lectured about

how I should always switch off at the mains first… I felt like a fiveyear-old. Those readers who have visited Spain and the Canary Islands will also know that kettles are never provided in hotel bedrooms. This is, of course, to ensure that visitors only purchase drinks from the hotel bar.

However, for those of you who go self-catering on holiday, have you noticed that only very rarely is a kettle provided? Usually, it is one of those rather silly saucepans with two handles. Whoever heard of boiling water for a cup of tea in a two-handled saucepan? Most sensible travellers that I know always carry a portable kettle in their suitcase, just in case. Bread makers and slow cookers? Well, until recently you could forget trying to get those two wonderful appliances in Spain and the Canary Islands. I know of many expats who have brought their bread makers with them from the UK, and were unable to replace them when they finally died. As for slow cookers, well I was told by one lady in a department store that as Canarians never did anything slowly there would be no market for them. I am still trying to work that one out. Did I mention two-handled saucepans? Yes, I resolutely refuse to call them pans, but will stick to the term that I have grown up with saucepans. As a Brit, I really do detest those two handled things, particularly as most do not have insulated handles and so even the most dedicated of chefs needs asbestos hands to handle them. I recently had to search most of the Canary Islands to find a decent set of saucepans with one handle, but in the end I had to order a set from Amazon. Thank goodness for Jamie Oliver! I rather like the single-handled variety of saucepan, because I can hold the saucepan with one hand and stir or read with the other. I am no chef, but it seems logical enough to me. I suspect that the two-handled variety to be a cunning invention of the French to throw the Brits off guard. Of course, the chefs over here tell me that the two-handled varieties of pan are perfect for putting in the oven. Come off it, who in real life actually puts a saucepan in the oven anyway? Mind you, it’s not all bad; I really do like our magnificent Spanish paella pan. LÍNEA DIRECTA THE BEST COMPANY FOR EXPATRIATES - AT THE BEST PRICE ince 1998 Línea Directa, the market leader in the sale of direct car, motorbike and home insurance in Spain, has offered an exclusive telephone service entirely in English and German.

S

This service, the first of its kind in Spain, forms part of the company’s commitment to quality and excellence, which have also made it the market leader in this business sector, due to the fact that it currently has over 63,000 foreign customers residing in Spain.

orsche Cayman awarded 'Best Coupé' in the inaugural 2014 UK Car of the Year Awards, an independent set of accolades designed to highlight the best new cars on the market specifically for UK customers. Described by 27 professional motoring journalist judges as one of the best drivers’ cars in its class, the Cayman was crowned the winner following a series of votes. The new Cayman is the third generation of the benchmark midengined sports coupé’. Its dynamic blend of driver appeal, peerless handling and high quality has seen it win many plaudits as well as a number of awards. “It’s one of the best drivers’ cars out there at any price," said journalist and juror Richard Bremner. “It’s glamorous, easy to live with and impressive value for money." Two characterful flat-six ‘boxer’ engines are offered in the Cayman, with displacements of 2.7-litres and 3.4-litres respectively, both offering an enticing blend of power and efficiency. The styling of the Cayman adds further distinction. An extended wheelbase with short overhangs and the option of up to 20-inch diameter wheels help accentuate the striking visuals of, as expressed by

juror Tom Ford, “the finest small coupé of 2014.” The Cayman is priced at £39,694, which offers a flat-six engine that combines 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds with 36.7 mpg combined (with PDK transmission). The Cayman S costs from £48,783, with a 3.4-litre engine producing 325 hp for 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds, while offering the potential delivery of 35.3 mpg combined. Freelance journalist and jury member Anthony Ffrench-Constant perhaps summed up the Cayman’s universal appeal best when he said: “The correct answer to the pub bore’s ‘If you could have only one car…’ question.”

As a result, services such as purchasing a policy, making enquiries, processing claims, sending documents and 24-hour assistance can all be carried out in English or German at a time which is convenient for the customer by making just one phone call. This is the result of a strategy which is permanently geared towards offering customers the very best quality at the very best price.

And not only does Línea Directa offer the best, it also offers its services at the most competitive price on the market. It does this in two ways: - Price personalisation: behind each quote there is a sales professional who, via a quick questionnaire, will search for the best product and conditions to suit the customer’s personal requirements and will assess him or her according to their individual circumstances. - Maximum competitiveness: still at the best price, this month Línea Directa is making Expats an exclusive 12x11 offer, which allows them to enjoy one year of insurance for the price of 11 months. And what is more, if the person requesting this offer already has another car insurance policy with Línea Directa, then the offer will be 12x10, which is to say two months’ free cover.

TOP TIPS FOR LOOKING GORGEOUS IN GLASSES lasses are a great accessory and even those people who don’t need to improve their vision are incorporating glasses into their fashion toolbox. The key is to select the style carefully to flatter your face, colouring and style. Specsavers Opticas have put together the following advice to help you look your best in glasses.

G

Consider your face shape - Different style glasses will suit different face shapes, so make sure you know your face shape before you shop and choose your styles accordingly. Here’s a rundown of face shapes and the best styles for each: Oval - Be adventurous as this shaped face suits almost all frame shapes. Rectangle - Consider a wide frame with a strong top line. Avoid small square shapes and try a frame style with all-over colour Round - Consider angular or geometric styles as they draw attention to the top half of the face. You should avoid oval or round shaped frames Square Square – Consider oval frames as they soften the jaw line. Avoid angular frames as these will emphasise the angular facial features. Take into account your colouring - There are so many colours and materials to choose from that it can be hard to know where to start.

By choosing colours that match your hair colour and skin type, you can find the glasses which complement you perfectly. Dark brown brown - Try metal frames in antique silver or gold colours, as well as softer browns. Avoid pastels or very dark colours and heavy styles. Black - Try any of the metallic frames, especially simple shapes and colours. Avoid bright colours unless you want to make a strong impact. Blonde - Try lightweight styles with delicate colour effects. Experiment with colours that add warmth to your skin tone. Avoid dark, heavy styles, cold colours such as blues and greens, and lightcoloured metals. If you blush easily, avoid pinks and amber. Dark grey grey - Try lighter coloured metal or plastic frames. Avoid heavy dark frames.

Specsavers Opticas’ staff can help you choose the right frame, colour and style to suit you. For more information or to find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es or see our ad on page 5.

180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams, Paul Durrant, Lee Maidenx3 (Meerkats), Sid Cross x3 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters), Mike Smith, Mel Dawson (Breakaways Bears) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 Shortest leg: 14 darts Lee Maiden, Meerkats Well you don’t see one for ages and then three come along at once! No not buses, but maximums, 3 treble twenties, the ultimate, what we all aspire to. Due to the format of the league, single legs that is, players don’t have the opportunity of getting into their throwing stride as in longer formats, so it was no mean feat for two to be attained in one night and an even bigger achievement for one player to accomplish the feat. But back to back, impossible, unless of course you are Phil Taylor, Michael Van Gerwen or even Lee Maiden of the Hub Meerkats. Yes a fine 14 darter from the Meerkat, out on D20, just missing a 13 dart finish after consecutive 180s in his match against Madigans. Great performance and a dignified hand shank with shell shocked opponent Leah Chesworth, no mean player herself. The other maximum came from super hunk Sid Cross in the local Hattons derby game. Its his third of the season and the old boy can still play a bit. With just six matches remaining in the season, the Meerkats will have to suffer a major deterioration in form to lose the league title from their current position. They sit nicely, three wins and a draw ahead of second place Que Pasa, however, with five of those matches against teams sitting in the top half, it’s a possibility. A fine performance from Misfit Pete James wasn’t enough to prevent a comfortable victory for the Kats this week. The home side´s total of 18 tons commenced with one from captain Derek Kingsbury and a 140 and D10 from John Eyre. Lee Maiden 100 and Pat Abrams 2x100 and D8 made it 2 up with only Karl Cooper 95 showing any resistance. A rare Eddie Bendelow 116 and a 98 from Kingsbury to leave Paul Durrant D6 gave the hosts a 3 leg advantage, despite some stirring in the scoring department from the James family Pete and Zoe, supported by Leah Chesworth. The not so good looking James hit a fine ton to leave just 88, but it wasn’t enough as the 12 points remaining were converted in one dart. Abrams continued his usual barrage of tons in the next scoring 2x100 and D4. Alex Nikolov just cannot resist a little showboating and made it 5-0 with two D8s against Sonya Cooper and George Caine. Veteran Eyre pulled out the stops in the concluding doubles, hitting 3 consecutive tons with partner Durrant doing absolute zilch until James hit his second ton of the leg putting pressure on Durrant to finish the 8 points remaining, with his second arrow. At 6-0 down the writing was on the wall for the Misfits. Captain Cooper put herself first against Graham Todd who opened with 114, his opponent steadily scoring until a nice 133 to leave 32, wobbled the Meerkat who then missed the opportunity of a game shot, which Cooper didn’t next throw. Abrams eventually found D1 to win the match and points against an unlucky Caine. Pete James had advantage of throw in the

third single against Nikolov and promptly hit 121, the reply was 100 which was repeated by James. Nikolov hit another and then the scoring tempered a little, James just keeping ahead to get to the double first and a fine win on D14. Kingsbury on one of his rare appearances on the oche hit 2x100 and D4 against Zoe James and then the assembled enjoyed Maiden´s magnificent 180,180,D20 (in two) for a deserved 14 darter beating the league´s best leg to date of 16 darts, held by three players. Karl Cooper´s ton wasn’t enough to beat Eyre in the last who took the leg on D20. Two great individual performances from Misfit Pete James and Lee Maiden of the Meerkats. No love lost between the Hunks and Honeys of Hattons as the boys battered their counterparts winning all 12 available legs. A nice tons tally was started by Stewart McCulloch in the first doubles, followed by a great effort from Sid Cross hitting 401 points of the 601 available (100,121,180), quite what partner Steph Simpson was doing was anyones guess but he was there to finish 12 after Cross´ 180. A fine 140 from Simone de Lacy and a near 147 out from Hilda Wilkinson wiring D18 couldn’t prevent a 6-0 half time score line in the concluding doubles. A 101 from Julie McCulloch wasn’t enough for a chance at a winning leg and Cross continued his scoring prowess with 100,120 and D16. Joe Hawkins added a further 120 in his singles to complete the rout. Hub Hyenas keep the pressure on Busters for third place, with a good away victory at PB´s Pirates. A good all round effort from captain Simon Williams, Richie Weaver, Andy Brooker and Geoff Harvey was too much for the inexperienced but vastly improving Pirates. John and Michelle Lane were the lone leg winners in the first half, with a resounding defeat on the cards. Surprisingly the singles were shared via John Lane S9,D8, Terry Kirby D2 and Barry Weston D5. Phil Batt managed a 142 in his singles, but John Lane was the Pirates man of the match for his two game shots. Porterhouse retained 5th spot after getting back to winning ways against the Tavern. Justin Hepburn scored a ton for the Tavern in the team game setting up a shot, however, Mike Newberry´s 90 to leave D20 for Peter Ayres, just edged out the visitors. Ray Hayes showed the way in the second doing it all himself with 100,171 and D1 to complete the leg. Steph Ralphs D3 pulled one back for the Tavern but then that man Hayes, increased the advantage on D18 with Ayres D2 making it 4-1. John Graziours 130 in the third doubles couldn’t prevent Newberry D12 from giving the Porters a 5-1 half time lead. Hayes made it 3 game shots for the evening on D20 in his match v. Mike Snow, ensuring at least a point. Ivan Jones rallied his Tavern side with a ton and D6 to reduce the deficit. Newberry got the all important 7th leg and both points for the Porters on D10. Captain Ray Sanderson´s ton was bettered by Ralph Weatherby´s 114 leaving D3 which was converted next throw. Sue Sanderson, in her customary 6th single spot, made it 9 for the Porters on D5. Second place Que Pasa entertained the Queens this week or was it the other way around? You never really know with the Crazy Gang. The Royals, Debbie Wright and Rachael Broadhead scored very well in the first leg, but it was no match against Jim Waddle 81,100, Eddie Klimonis 100 and John Walker 2x100 and D2. Lorraine Cox top scored in the second, but in a repeat of the first leg Stuart Clark 140 and Klimonis not missing the 20 bed and then converting D17 it was 2-0 in a flash. Walker 85,125, Jim Storey 100 and captain Den Hall D2 made it 3-0 by 9 o´clock. Queen Debbie did her best in the first doubles with some consistent scoring, but Klimonis 100 and Hall D5 made it 4 without reply. Ladies merit table topper Cox featured next with ambidextrous Broadhead, playing Walker and Waddle, a formidable pair if ever. Some prolific scoring from the two Eagles, Walker hitting 100,135, didn’t faze the Royals and Broadhead calmly slotted home D15 left handed. Clark 100,D10 gave the Eagles a 5-1 advantage at the refreshment stage. Joe Cuyt 111,D1 gave the Eagles their 6th leg, with Waddle playing Cox next. An 80 and 2x100 were followed by D5 for the Eagle, with Cox unfortunately not on a shot. A nervy Klimonis wasn’t quite sure what to expect when facing Rachael “left and right” Broadhead. He soon found out when lefty (this week) hit 132 and D8, the team and her second leg of the night. Walker was next and fired an impressive 21 dart leg hitting 2 tons and S19,S18,D16 for a 69 out. Clark who is obviously a favourite of the Royal family, faced her most Royal Debbie who acquitted herself well against a tough opponent. Despite some desperate tactics, all unprintable, to keep the Eagle grounded, it was Clark who came out on top on D9 after an excellent 120. The last leg was a little bit of a mis-

match, 6´6¨ Jim Storey faced 4´6¨ Marie Dunne. Despite a blatant contravention of league rules, Dunne was lifted by team mates to enable her to be level with T20, it was however Storey who came out on top, allegedly putting in his darts due to his superior reach. In the absence of any complaint to the committee no action will be taken against either side. The Pint Depot Kings earned a precious point and move three points clear of their nearest rivals, in their quest for silverware in the shape of the Breakaways League Plate. Ironically it is Breakaways who this year are sponsoring the trophy and who are themselves still in the running along with the Tavern. Ron Cornelius got the Kings off to a good start on D9 followed by D10 from Eddie Fozzard. Excellent scoring from Kings Gary Minor 100, Cornelius and Dave Wright looked likely to take the Kings into a commanding 3-0 lead, but Jay Sharp had his own ideas and held his triple together completing the 701 on D7. Some good scoring from Mike Smith set up partner Sue Wiles for 2 apiece. Frankie Wurrorck D4 gave the Kings a slender lead, before Wright and Minor made it 4-2 despite a ton from Sharp. Smith continued some fine scoring in the first single hitting 137,120 and D11 to reduce the 2 leg advantage. Wiles recognised the Bears were on a roll and consistently hit the treble against Wright, eventually completing the leg for 4-4. Carl Wilson D3 got the Bears into the lead for the first time in the match, needing two from the remaining three legs for the match. Some heavy scoring from Fozzard against Sarah Simpson enabled the Kings to get back to all square. A ton from Matt Cummins looked good enough to take out Sharp, but the Bear retaliated with two good scores himself and D5 to lead 6-5. Minor faced Wilson in the last with it all to play for. Minor´s 60,60,121 and D18 left both teams with points shared and both the opportunity of some silverware. Gogarty´s look destined to finish around 7th after their second successive defeat, this time to third placed Busters. No shame in that however as Gail Todd has put together a completely new side already enjoying 11 victories, a win ratio most premier league managers would be proud of. Gogarty´s got off to a fine start, John Linton completing the 1001 ably assisted by Bliss Wright and Richard Patterson. Paul Dowinton 125 and Irene Russell 133 did their best with captain Shirley Roberts to take the lead. Dowinton 140 set up Russell to level on D16 in the next. Will Drummond D8 made it 2-1 for the hosts despite a 95 from Ernie Wilson. Dowinton was in on the act yet again with a ton and 65 out, S13,S20,D16 for 3-1. Patterson top scored for Gogarty´s in the second doubles, but it was Russell for her second double of the night on D16 to make it 4-1. Linton and Wright meant business in the last leg before the break and completely outscored Busters, Linton finishing the 601 for 4-2. Dowinton increased the score line on D4 only for Gogarty´s to retrieve the next via Steve Woods on D4. Russell faced Cynthia Jevons in the third single and recorded 90,114 before nailing D4, her third game shot of the evening. A great performance. Linton 125 and D16 gave Gogarty´s a 6-4 life line, setting up Patterson to take it to the wire finishing on D2 for 6-5. A real ding dong followed Roberts facing Wright for the spoils. Both girls were exceptional, but Roberts just came out on top to give Busters both points. La Zenia Tool Hire pairs this week and a number of potential winning combinations feature. Filer and Harvey with Dowinton and Drummond from Busters. Waddle and Walker (Que Pasa) are certainly no pushovers. Current in form pair of Abrams and Maiden representing the Meerkats could well just be favourites. Holtham and Smith (Hyenas) not forgetting Cross and Simpson will be difficult to beat. Plenty of more excellent pairs, who will take the title? A reminder to all captains regarding a cancellation request of matches. Derek Kingsbury must be informed first of any possibility of a cancellation to validate the request. Games must NOT be cancelled without his authorisation. Week Twenty-Two played 4th March 2014 This week saw the semi-finals of the Cornish Pride Cup, kindly sponso red by Shane and Sue Winfield of Cornish Pride Los Dolses. With all four teams bowling for points as well, their incentive was to win and win well. Cup SF team Caballo Negro took on Bar Mosquitos in the league but, it was BM who came out on top 6 -2, Dave Haynes of BM rolling a 213 scratch game to ensure the win. And to make it a bad night for BM, their Cup opponents Split Happens outgunned them by 86 pins. SH overpowered Juans Warriors 8 - 0, who sadly had only two bowlers on the night. The Cup ever presents Splash, continued their march to the final, with an 8 – 0 demolition of Lucky Strike and, with Antonio Berenger firing a 219 scratch final game, they easily overcame Crazy Pinz by 140 pins. CP got off to a great start in game one against Cornish Pride, taking the game with a 588 handicap team total. Gunter Wilms finishing with a 228 handicap game but, even that couldn't prevent Cornish P from taking the next two games and overall pinfall, to record a 6 – 2 victory. Top of the league Team Finland continued their march for the title, with a 6 – 2 win against a determined Los Lobos. Jukka Koskinen of TF taking all the mens highs of the night, including a 221 scr game and 600 scr series. HallyDay, chasing TF, came up against The Mixers in determined mood. TM took the first game by 5 pins and the second by 13 but, HyD battled back to take the 3rd game and overall, to share the points 4 – 4. Los Bandidos had Barry Tolson to thank for a 6 – 2 victory over The Dreamers. Barry ending with a 619 h/c Series, as LB battered TD by 197 pins. So the Cup final will be between Splash and Split Happens and will be contested on April 8th. Good luck to both teams. Next week we are holding a raffle and, any donations will be greatfully received by a Committee member.

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB CELEBRATE 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

BY CARL EAGLE Our picture shows Bob Slater (78) and Pauline Hartfree (83) who have enjoyed bowling at San Miguel club for twenty-five

years. The club was among the first of the many UK expat clubs in the region and has won almost every Bowls League since then and had many members selected for international duties. The club is celebrating this anniversary with a number of events throughout the year. Captain Bob Donnelly is pictured dressed-up and enjoying the Fun Day Racing game, one of the events held recently. Two MiniTours, one to the North and one to Almeria, are planned. There will a Beach Party later in the year and a Bonfire Night Bash in November. A Gala Evening is to be held and John Bell, the

England manager has promised to pay us a visit. The committee would welcome any challenge from clubs playing other relaxing sports; petanca, darts, skittles, pool, fishing, golf, etc. The club would be pleased to welcome them to a return match and help them to enjoy their first game of bowls at San Miguel during this anniversary year. The club welcomes new members and has a special day each week for beginners, when they lend bowls and special shoes to anyone wishing to try their hand. (Further details from Carl Eagle 620 060 611.)

Can`t sign off without asking this question which vice president ( that’s a clue ) and his partner had a hot shot in the club semi finals and STILL lost, answers in writing to me. QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Last week has seen a good result for most of our teams. With the SABA Pearls still maintaining second position in their League after taking a 12-2 victory at Country Bowls in what can only be described as horrendous conditions with the galeforce winds.. In the Southern League both our Swallows, moving up to second place and the Swifts in first place, have high hopes of promotion this year. The Winter League had a very tough match this week against Vistabella in very high winds which have been prevailing all this week. A great result 8-4, well done

to the rinks skipped by Jackie Breslin, Jack Martin and Pete Bonsor. Our Federated 4s Panthers had a good result 8-2 against Greenlands Bears, which leaves us in second place 1 point behind. This week sees the first event of our new Social Committee, kicking off with a beetle drive and supper on the 7th March at the club. Good Luck to you all for your future programme. GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB A tremendous performance by our winter league team, as they humbled last years champions San Miguel in their own backyard. Winning on 4 rinks, plus overall shots, resulted in a superb 10-2 score line for these guys n dolls: J Pocock, S Gray, M Veale, L Greenland 21-12. G Bater, L Morris, L Miller, B Pocock 21-16. G Chapman, B Miller, C Chapman, T Hill 21-13. S Johnson, M Gray, S Westall, I Brewster 19-10. Unfortunately, the Berleeners could not match this achievement, going down 13-26 (0 points). Also coming up against a San Miguel team were the Bears, this time at home to Choctaws. Against Fed 4s div 1 leaders, these 2 rinks did enough to earn 4 valuable points in their quest against relegation: M & P Lockley, Penny Tomkins, D Webb 16-14. F Tilley, N Cork, A Toozer, V Mahomet 25-12. But over at San Luis, Bulls failed to pick up a point, leaving them tottering on the brink of relegation themselves, and with only 2 games remaining, it could go to the wire. In the top Southern league div, Oaks just sneaked a home win, as they edged out La Siesta Blues on overall shots by 3. Here's the 3 victorious rinks: S Johnson, B Miller, D Greenland 23-18. M Veale, J Westall, L Greenland 22-9. S Stead, A Toozer, L Miller 20-14. Our 2 second tier sides both lost their away matches. Cedars travelled to La Manga, and as with almost every other team in the div, lost 14-

0. Elms visited near neighbours Quesada to play Swallows, who are vying for promotion to div 1. The result went to form, with only these 2 rinks scoring in a 4-10 defeat: M Lockley, S Hibberd, T Upham 14-11. F Tilley, P Lockley, J Reeves 1816. Best result in the Saba league went to Chestnuts, as they secure a well deserved 10-4 victory at Quesada. Playing the Diamonds, twas these 4 rinks who did the biz: H Langlois, D Thompson, D Webb 29-14. J Thompson, A Butterworth, J Wray 19-16. P Wray, A Hewitt, J O'Brien 28-8. J McLean, E Merrick, C Dewar 22-16. High Flying Sycamores are within touching distance of promotion back to div 1, following their dogged performance against table toppers Vistabella Albatrosses. Although they just lost out on bonus points, these 3 rinks earned a very useful 6 points: N Bater, Penny Tomkins, T Upham 16-12. Joan Oliver, B Doran, G Inwood 20-18. M Beardsall, A Brown, G Watt 18-13. Maples suffered a bad day in the office. At San Luis, only the rink of M Lockley, M Brown & I Brewster (25-9), scored points, as they went down 12-2 against the Klingons. John O'Brien was the winner in the recent Totus and Dragon Insurance Saturday Challenge. Runners up were Jean Giddings, Jim Reeves & Eileen Merrick, whilst Ken Toy scooped the wooden spoon.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Which is the best maintained golf course on the Costa Blanca? Having lived in Spain for 10 years I feel qualified to comment on the condition of the courses here on the Costa Blanca, I get fed up with people trying to compare our courses with those on the Costa Del Sol (many of which are vastly over priced) or those in places like Turkey (which excellent but cost a small fortune to reach by aeroplane). I totally agree with many ex-pat golfers that the cost of membership here is too expensive when compared to available disposable pension income and UK prices. The overall green fees prices compare more than favourably with other Costa areas even though the high season prices in March, April, October and November make us ex-pats ‘wince’ somewhat. This then leads us on to the condition of courses here on the Costa Blanca. Most courses in this area are sown with Bermuda grass on fairways and rough which goes ‘dormant’ during the winter months giving a yellow/brown un-kempt type of look BUT this is natural and as soon as average night time temperatures increase a few degrees they turn green over night. Also unlike the UK which has a ready supply of surplus ‘natural’ rain water the courses here have to purchase vast volumes of water to keep the courses looking good all year around BUT this is at a typical cost of circa €250K per annum. So we have taken all the above into consideration and I guess we all have a view of what makes a course to be in good condition and also which is the best course in the area. With excellent courses like Las Colinas, La Finca, Lo Romero and Font del Llop we have much to be happy about BUT which is the best course based on playing conditions over a year? For your information VISTABELLA has been catalogued by the local press as the best maintained local course with the best greens over the whole year. Now I am sure that you will all have your opinion on this subject but just for once it is nice to be talking about local courses in a positive light. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Hollow Tining Watch Alicante – 10th-11th March La Galiana – 3rd-7th March Quotation of the week “There is no such thing as a bad golf course, just golfers having a bad day and looking for an excuse” – Peter Allis.

Thankfully the weather has started to calm down and the sun was shining on the Mar Menor and the VBPGL teams who travelled down from North Alicante and South Costa Calida Las Ramblas and their skipper Mick Brentnall are determined to take the top spot and are always the last to leave the venue to see the results, well against EuroToffs G S they took maximum points to put pressure on the League leaders, it has to be said that a big thanks should go the two ladies Carole Wheeler 33 points and Benedicte Kruse 34 points, who scored nearly a third of the total points. The La Manga North team needed the highest team score of the day to see off the long distance travellers Don Cayo winning two games and losing and drawing one to give them ten points. An excited Rockets team celebrated their first win and their first bonus points.of the season against a weakened Paddy’s Point, although it did not take them off bottom spot they are getting closer to the others The highest scoring match of the day was between La Manga RGA and Club25 Serena who between them amassed 472 points with La Manga coming out on top by just 12 points, La Manga also had the highest individual scorer John Douglas. The irony and the uniqueness of the VBPGL is the team aspect to get as masny points as possible. This shows with Club 25 winning by La manga getting the bonus points: Rockets GS La Manga North GS La Manga RGA Las Ramblas GS

QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE AT ALICANTE GOLF Here we are at Alicante for the final match of the season. What a game we have in prospect. Who will be our champions this year? Will it be San Miguel GS who have been our front runners for most of the season. Will it be Mini Golf GS who have not lost a match but are still those few points behind. Or will it be the winner of the last two years Benijofar GS, theirs is a much bigger hurdle to climb as they are 8 points behind the leaders. We had asked the course to put the pins in the most difficult place they could so the climax of the season would be as tight and as thrilling for the players as it could be. In the event the wind decided to put itself in the playing position to make it even more difficult. With Ian and Andy both on the subs bench and roaming the course in the buggy it was apparent that the final score was ebbing and flowing between the three front runners, and it looked to be that the champions would only win by a very narrow margin, but this was how the league was supposed to be, competitive golf in a friendly atmosphere with the edge always in place. When everybody finished and journeyed back to the Claptons Club House for the cards to be checked and the points added up we had had the most thrilling finale to this year’s season, with San Miguel coming out on top as our champions for this year, closely followed by Mini golf. Congratulations to all the teams that played in this year’s league. Our thanks to Chris and his staff for the excellent fare. Hope to see everybody next season. Results as shown below. To all golf societies in Quesada and the surrounding areas there is still room for more teams to play in next season’s league. I am sure you will find this pleasant competitive scene very much to the benefit of all your members as our present teams will tell you. Also date for the diary the Summer

ELCHE WELL BEATEN IN BARCELONA ESPANYOL.......3 ELCHE CF........1 Whereas the major half

BY JOHN of Spain’s second city MCGREGOR was in mourning as mighty Barcelona inexplicably lost on Saturday to lowly Valladolid, their little brothers Espanyol comfortably put Elche away in the sunshine on Sunday. A 2 – 0 half-time lead was increased to three on the hour, with Elche grabbing a late consolation goal in the closing minutes. No captain and left back Albacar again for Elche, last week his return prompted a hugely-welcome 1-0 win over Celta Vigo. Cisma deputised ably once more, otherwise the Franjiverdes were at full strength with the same team that finished against Celta, Coro returning to face his old club. But the worst start for the visitors came as early as the second minute when David Lopez opened the scoring to home delight after only two minutes . It was all over as a contest on twenty minutes when Collotto made it two, Elche vainly chasing the game from then on. When Pizzi made it three on the hour it was abundantly clear there was going to be no other result, despite Elche coach Escriba using all his options bringing on Fidel for Manu del Moral, Boakye for Christian Herrera and central defender Peligrin for the injured Botia. In a farcical final few minutes a corner by Damian Suarez was returned by Fidel only for Fuentes to put through his own goal, to make the score a bit more repectable for the Franjiverdes. With wins by mid-table rivals Granada, third-bottom Valladolid and bottom-place Real Betis, Elche should continue to be worried, with other key

results not yet in. Next week at the Martinez Valero Elche entertain bottom-placed Betis, who are enjoying something of a revival lately after looking certainties for relegation earlier this season. Their home form is OK, but away Betis haven’t won a game, conceding a massive 35 in 13 games. Shotshy Elche, 24 goals in 27 games did win in at the Seville club 1 – 0 in October, so now the Franjiverdes have a great opportunity to take three more vitally important points in the quest to stay up in La Liga. What an achievement that would be in their first season back in the hierarchy of Spanish football - in World Cup year where Spain are the reigning champions. Can Elche stay up with eleven games to go? Mucho Elche! Elche’s Columbian midfielder Carlos Sanchez www.elchecf.es

VISTABELLA BOWLS TAKE DIVISION ‘A’ TITLE Champions Southern League ‘A’ Division & SABA Discovery Division A great week for Vistabella Bowls Club, with important wins for our teams, on Monday in the SABA leagues and Friday in the Southern league. On Monday the Albatrosses clinched the title of Champions of the SABA Discovery Division while on Friday the Lanzadores were confirmed as Champions of the Southern League ‘A’ division with a 15 point cushion with only one game to play. On Monday the Albatrosses travelled to Greenlands to take on their Sycamores and with wins on 3 rinks and a shot total of 110 to 94 in our favour we sealed the title of Champions of the Discovery Division with two games left to play. Our winners were Gail Willshire, Mac Maclean and Fred Willshire, Neil Burrows, Les Barber and Ian Kenyon and Tony French, Barbara Brown and Arthur Brown. The Eagles were also in good form on Monday and enjoyed their visit to Emerald Isle to face the Neptunes winning by 10 points to 4 and 105 shots to 90. Mo Foulcer, Richard Hind and Sue Mynott, Lesley Prockter, Ken Savage and Brian Prockter, Rosemarie Savage, Peter Cadwell and Diane Hudson and Jeff Austin, Jeff Neve and Pat Rafferty provided our wins. Wednesday and Thursday were not quite so productive as our Winter League team lost by 4 points to 8 on Wednesday to a strong Quesada team well done to our two winning rinks Gail Willshire, Jeff Austin, Andy Leggatt and Fred Willshire and Di Harwood, Barbara Brown, Jim Harwood and Arthur Brown. On Thursday our Fed Fours team lost to Emerald Isle despite winning one and drawing one of the three rinks but lost out by two shots at 50 to 52 to lose by 3 points to 5. Our winning rink was Neil Burrows, Barbara and Arthur Brown and Maggie Furness while Sheila Cox, Andy Leggatt. Les

Vistabella’s Hot Shots

Barber and Mike Regan managed a draw. Friday was the highlight of the week with the Lanzadores making the difficult trip to Country Bowls where a win by 8 points 6 and 118 shots to 88 was enough to ensure that no one else could catch them with only 1 game left to play. Great wins came from Gail Willshire, Les Barber and Fred Willshire, Martin Foulcer, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee and Sheila and Mike Cox and Mac Maclean. The Conquistadores were also on the winning side against La Siesta Silvers wins from Di Harwood, Jeff Neve and Jim Harwood, Carol Austin, Allan Sinclair and Pat Rafferty, June Hitchcock, Audrey Sinclair and George Gandy and Lesley Prockter, Ken Savage and Brian Prockter were enough to produce a 10 points to 4 win by 118 shots to 100. A great performance from everyone the club is proud of you. Spons by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice

ALBERTO DISMISSAL MARS GOOD PERFORMANCE AT JOVE JOVE ESPANOL.............1 FC TORREVIEJA..........1 Torry were forced to make 4 changes from last weeks starting line up against Villarreal. With no less than 6 players out injured, they were limited on who to include in the team. Carlos, Burguillos, Guillem & Quique all started, whilst 3 of the 4 outfield substitutes were carrying injuries. Quique embraced his inclusion with a lively start, going agonisingly close with a dipping long range free kick, which just missed the target on 7 mins. Captain Alberto was so unlucky on 14 mins, when his well struck corner hit the far post before bouncing to safety. Both Alberto and Quique were posing Jove keeper all kinds of problems, but he responded well by saving 2 probing goal bound efforts. But although Torry had completely dominated early encounters, you just knew that a sucker punch wasn't far away. With their first foray on goal, Jove launched a hopeful cross into the penalty area, eluding Torry defenders, but landing perfectly at the feet of Edu, who had the simple task of slotting the ball past Carlos. Jove seemed to be galvanised by the goal, when first ex Torry man Luis Carlos shot over, then the same man provided an assist onto the head of Fran, which suffered the same result. Strong winds played havoc for the majority of the 2nd half, but eventually players stopped pumping high balls (it was becoming a lottery!). The impressive Quique was

unceremoniously tripped in the area on 65 mins, leaving the ref with no alternative but to award a penalty. Up stepped Alberto, sending Pepelu the wrong way, thus demonstrating how to execute the perfect spot kick. Neither side really troubled either keeper for the rest of the match, although Jove's Ayo gave us Torry fans palpitations, when his shot from the edge of the box on 85 mins, agonisingly missed the target. In the last of 3 added minutes, Torry manager Anselmo vented his anger at a linesman's decision, and was promptly dispatched to the stands. He felt that Alberto was denied a clear run at goal, courtesy of a decision that he had run the ball out of play. Worse was to follow, for Alberto continued the argument, receiving not 1, but 2 yellow cards, then the obligatory red. On Sun 16 Mar, ko 5pm, Torry entertain Pinoso at Vicente Garcia Stadium, in another div 3 fixture.
