NEW TRAFFIC LAWS APPROVED
On Thursday the 20th of March, 2014, the Spanish government approved the amendments to the road traffic laws, with a number of major changes to the rules of the road in Spain. The laws will come into force one month and one day after its publication in the Official State Gazette, although a few elements are still open to discussion for approval in June. Here are some of the highlights from the legislation, which will shortly come into force. Foreign residents are now obliged to register vehicles in Spain. Until now, foreign residents must only meet tax obligations set out in the Excise Act, but it was not mandatory to register the vehicle in Spain, which in practice made it difficult for law enforcement. Children are prohibited from riding in the front seats of cars. Until now, those under
12 years of age were allowed to sit in the front seat, if they do so with the proper child restraint system. Now, the translation of the law dictates that children less than 1.35 metres tall are not allowed to travel in the front, although there are certain restrictive exceptions, such as vehicles without rear seats. The fine for not complying is 200 euro, and this rule also applies to taxis, but the responsibility is given to the parent or guardian, not the taxi driver. Officers also now have the right to immobilise a vehicle which is not fitted with appropriate restraints. The fine for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol will remain at 500 euro, in the case of driver exceeding 0.5 milligrams per litre of exhaled air and 0.3 milligrams for novice drivers and professionals, such as taxi drivers. The penalty is however doubled should a driver have been previously found driving under the influence of alcohol in the previous year, as well as for drivers with double the permitted rate. Continued From Page 1 In order to enforce the government´s aim of “zero tolerance” of drug use, a new law to tackle drug use whilst driving, replacing the current legislation that was covered by administrative sanctions, with saliva tests now acceptable, and fines of 1,000 euro. Prescription drugs are allowed, subject to the conditions of their own instructions of use. Pedestrians are also now subject to drug and alcohol testing, in the event of any offence having been committed, replacing the current legislation that only requires a test in the event of a pedestrian being involved in an accident. Child cyclists, under 16 years of age, are obliged to wear a crash helmet when riding in towns. This was one of the most controversial sticking points in the legislation, after the government wanted to force all riders in town to wear helmets, finally backing down to force protection to children only. Those responsible for the child will face a 200 euro fine if caught out. The restrictions on minimum speed limits for cyclists on some roads will be lifted, as so far it has been impossible for cycles to travel at the required minimum 50% of the maximum. Other rules aimed at protecting cyclist are also included, such as ensuring 1.5 metres of lateral spacing when passing a bike, allowing cycles to occupy part or all of adjacent or opposite lanes, and ensuring that vehicles involved in overtaking moves must not jeopardise or hinder the progress of cyclist moving in the opposite direction. The speed on motorways remains at 120 kilometres per hour maximum, although the law does now allow for the increase of permitted speeds, and fines, should certain areas of highway be seen as acceptable to be increased to 130 kilometres per hour. The speed on some roads may well decrease though, as a new section has been included to fine drivers on some roads who are speeding at the lower end of the spectrum.
Monday, 24th March, 2014 The new law expressly prohibits the use of radar speed detectors and imposes a penalty of 200 euro, plus the loss of 3 points, as well as a the continual 6,000 euro fine and the decrease of six points in the case of using inhibitors. However, it is legal to use devices which provide information on the location of safety cameras, which are freely published by the DGT on their website, but drivers must avoid using them whilst driving to avoid distractions. A traffic law enforcement officer may now issue a fine without the need to stop the vehicle. Until now, certain surveillance activities have proved difficult when it came to the required identity of drivers, but this element will be removed by the filing process of the vehicle. Drivers will become responsible in the event of hitting or killing a large animal on the roads. Until now, the driver was only responsible if it were proven that a law had been broken which led to an incident, now the responsibility is on the driver, unless negligence can be proven in the event of a lack of speedy repairs to fencing, for example. Should a driver be issued with a sanction, the length of time in which a 50% discount will be applied has been increased from 15 to 20 calendar days, allowing a slightly longer period in which to submit claims. A new law also now allows authorities to restrict access or traffic routes to vehicles for environmental reasons. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment will be allowed to make the necessary moves, which can also include such problems as reducing pollution. Tow-trucks involved in emergency roadside assistance will now be treated as emergency vehicles, and be allowed priority to move through traffic. They may also now stand or park on city streets during the time necessary to remove vehicles, provided they do not create a new hazard or obstacle to traffic. The restrictions on cancer patients have also been eased in the legislation, as medical and pharmacological advances mean that the possibility is increased in the cases where cancer patients can drive themselves. Although these new and changed rules will come into force shortly, this is just a guide to how they might affect the day to day driving operations in Spain. VICENTE BOIX PLEDGES TOTAL COMMITMENT AS TORRY PRESIDENT
Luisma putting across the council’s viewpoint in the Torry Army Office
BY STEVE HIBBERD A group of FC Torrevieja fans attended 3 important meetings last week, designed to help dispel the uncertainty of FC Torrevieja's future. The first meeting saw Torrevieja Sports Minister, Luisma, address Torry Army members. The Minister stated that he would be submitting a grant for the club, similar to that of last year (50,000 euros), but from this amount, 15,000 euros would be embargoed to pay wages of former players who had made claims through the courts. He also stated that an agreement was in place, stipulating that at least 25% of the squad (5 players) should be Torreviejensens (either on the padron for a minimum of 2 years, or having come through the municipal footballing system). Although Pau, Guillem & Burguillos qualify under this criteria, more are needed. Luisma went on to say that many talented local players would play for virtually nothing. It was suggested by Luisma, that closer relationships between FC and CF Torrevieja should be considered, in order to increase the quota of local players. He then informed the fans that 2 groups were interested in taking over the club. One of these wants to work alongside current president Vicente, whilst the other (which is already in control of div 2a club Legones) want complete control. As the town hall has a huge deficit (over 30 million euros for planning irregularities dating 25 years),
they are not in a position to increase the grant in the foreseeable future. Improvements to the Nelson Mandela Stadium, essential to stage div 3 fixtures, has also been paid by the council. At the next meeting, club president Vicente Boix addressed Torry Army members. He refuted the 15,000 euros embargo figure due to ex players, but did admit that 10,000 euros was outstanding to a former president. He also denied any knowledge of the condition that 25% of the squad HAD to be Torreviejensens. Vicente stated that payment for pitch improvements at the Vicente Garcia stadium, will be paid for from this years council grant, and that improvements to the Nelson Mandela Stadium had not been asked for by the club. He admitted knowing of one group that were showing interest in the club, but they had given no serious intentions of investing any money! Support for Vicente to continue as President was unanimous, a view echoed by the man himself. Finally, a meeting with the socios took place, in which Vicente informed them that in addition to the 40,000 euros balance due from the grant, a further 9,000 euros should arrive directly from Agua Med. He also advised of the need for an AGM in the next few weeks, to discuss amongst other things, this important issue: CD Torrevieja was founded in 1993, then name changed to FC Torrevieja in 1996, but club directors are working with their solicitor to establish whether it is legal or not.

NEW PLAYGROUND ‘FIND NEW MEASURES TO PAY FOR LAND GRAB DEBT’ TORREVIEJA TOLD FOR PARK OF NATIONS The financial controller of accounts for the city of Torrevieja has asked the government team to adopt new tax measures and savings within the 2014 budget, as despite recent claims by the councillor for finance, Joaquín Albaladejo, regarding the reduction in debts that his team has achieved, according to the advisor, the government has “failed to fulfil” the requirements. The situation has evolved in relation to the increase in debts caused by cases of “land grab”, or expropriations performed by the Torrevieja town hall, for which the accounting official has said that the real figure of the amount of debt is 23.3 million euro. In 2012, the amount of debt was 19 million, but failure to effectively deal with the issue then has meant an increase of 3.6 million in 2013, and continues to increase due to interest accruing. The net result for the 2014 budget, according to the advisor, is that the city would need to borrow 19 million euro in order to pay suppliers. The reports of the financial advisor are seen as being contrary to the statement made by Albaladejo, who claimed a positive adjustment of 8.1 million euro, and saying that the 2014 budget will be achieved without tax increases or a reduction in service. Albaladejo did admit that 16 million euro existed in the 2014 accounts for expropriation cases, albeit under a title of “urban costs”, and that the municipality would probably have to apply for credit to address this. In the report, the financial advisor has offered a number of positive points however, including an increase in revenue from direct taxes,
with the 3.2 million euro collected above the 57 million anticipated is seen as favourable, largely due to improvements in the property market, and a reduction in staff costs from 32 million euro to just 24 million.
CASE AGAINST TORREVIEJA MAYOR DROPPED
AID GRANTS FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT
The case relating to electoral offences against the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, and other council members, including Joaquín Albaladejo, has been shelved by the courts in Torrevieja. The facts relate to allegations made by the PSOE and Los Verdes of Torrevieja, dating back to May, 2011, during the campaign for municipal and autonomous elections, when the Partido Popular made their final campaign rally in the Municipal Theatre, although the building was not authorized for use for this purpose by the Electoral Board. The judge says there is no evidence to infer that the members of the local government who authorized the gathering knew “or should have known” about the guidelines for the use of the building.
Rosario Martínez Chazarra, the Councillor for Education, last Monday presented 253 Torrevieja families with Assistance for School Transport for the remainder of the 2012/13 School Year. Specifically 117 grants were for students in public schools in the city, while the remainder, for the second consecutive year, was for students of Colegio la Purísima de Torrevieja. The total amount of aid delivered amounted to 46,424 euros. Those benefitting for the grants are entitled because of special family circumstances (single parents, disabilities, unemployed or total family income below IPREM, the Public Indicator of Multiple Effect Income, an index used in Spain as a reference to the granting of aid, grants or subsidies.
Albaladejo said that the 2014 budget will be achieved without tax increases or a reduction in service
The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, was accompanied by he Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Carmen Gómez Candel, and the president of the Rotary Club Torrevieja , Gema Cruz as they together opened the new Children’s Playground, located inside the garden of the Nations. The funding for the park was donated by the Rotary Club Torrevieja, through numerous collections made ??at a variety of events and community development projects costing in the region of 9,000 euros. This has been a venture that the Rotary Club also shared with APANEE, the Association of Parents of Students with Special Education Needs. This is the first playground in Torrevieja, providing a safe and accessible environment which has also been adapted to allow children with and without disabilities to play together. The park, which was blessed by Father Manuel Martínez Rocamora, was built by the Brigada Verde (Green brigade) of the Department of Parks and Gardens. The mayor thanked the Rotary Club Torrevieja for their help with this joint initiative which has enabled the installation of this playground.

MORE INVESTMENT AND PROTECTION ON THE COSTA In an unexpected twist in proceedings on Friday morning, the court case in Orihuela in which Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio López-Bas protested against the legality of their expulsion from the CLR-CLARO group was postponed, due to an administrative oversight. The case was brought to court after the blocking of a censure motion which could have seen the overthrowing of the current government of Orihuela, returning the PP to power, along with the members of CLR, but the motion was prevented as the two councillors had been expelled from the group and were therefore unable to participate. Should the case have been won by Mancebo and López-Bas, it could have paved the way for the motion to continue, but the failure to indicate the details of the prosecutor on the court documents meant that the hearing had to be postponed, and will now be held on the 11th of April. This case is running in conjunction with a second complaint contesting the legalities of the blocking of the motion which will be heard in the courts on 24th of April.
replaced to allow easier access. The tourism department of Orihuela is planning to install an information booth at Playa Flamenca for the summer months, in order to provide an outlet for information to the many visitors to the coast and promote the varied and diverse activities offered by the municipality. The company contracted to provide water to the municipality are installing a state of the art queuing system in the town hall, which will allow them to closely monitor every aspect of why people visit their office, in order to improve the quality of service in the future. Cleaning and renewal work has been carried out at the Pinada de Campoamor over the past few weeks, with a brigade of local unemployed workers recruited in a temporary training and apprenticeship scheme, whereas they receive practical training for work based skills, as well as two days per week in the classroom. The workers have been given six months of work on the scheme, where they have been carrying out extensive cleaning and clearing work, as well as constructing furniture which will be installed at the location. A number of residents of La Zenia have raised concerns regarding the condition of climbing frames on the beach. The foundations of the structures have become exposed, and one concerned resident spoke to The Leader to say, “The concrete is fully exposed and it´s only a matter of time before a child falls off and hits its head, and would be killed”. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has pointed out that annual renovation and painting is being carried out on the structures, and once finished, the sandy covering will be replaced.
A contract to remove some 50 palm trees infested with the Red Palm Weevil has now been arranged, after delays in which the Valencia based initiative failed to remove them due to lack of funding from the Generalitat. Many of these trees were also in locations which blocked the passage of pedestrians on footpaths, in particular along calle Panticosa, and these trees will be removed and the paving area
As part of the agreement with local promotion company Marcos y Bañuls, responsible for much of the development around La Zenia, the company would pay certain amounts of money for improving the surrounding area. This week, the local government board has announced that a figure of 140,363.57 euro of investment has been approved within this contract, which will be invested on improvements on the Orihuela Costa. Specifically, the
money will be spent on improving the paseo maritime in the Punta Prima area, renewing the 2,300 square metres of paving, and building a structure to offer shade at the mirador which overlooks the beach. The head of the local CLARO political group, Bob Houliston, is heading to Brussels once again, this time accompanied by the Mayor of the municipality, Monseratte Guillén, having been granted an audience with the EU to explain and seek further support for the defence of the environmentally rich area of the Orihuela Costa known as Cala Mosca. The “last green area” on the Orihuela Costa is home to a number of endangered species and must be protected from the development. It is hoped that plans to build on the site could be blocked completely, thus protecting the area for future generations.
The guided walking tour of the Orihuela Costa proved a success on Sunday, with buses arranged from the city to the coast to allow interior residents the opportunity to visit the unique and environmentally rich coastal zone, and partake in a guided 9 kilometre walk in the last of this series of events arranged by the tourism department. Over 500 people have taken part in the series of walks, resulting in some people having to join a waiting list for future events. In addition to these special events, another 3,000 people, in 75 groups, have joined in the daily guided walks arranged through the city of Orihuela.

GOVERNMENT TO SPEND MILLIONS IN INSIGNIA CHANGE The Spanish government is set revise the uniforms of the National Police force, updating the identifying rank insignia worn on the epaulettes of officers. The draft proposals created by technicians working on the project sees the uniform distinctions taking on similar characteristics of the Spanish military, with the Royal Crown, laurels and stripes replacing rectangles, leaves and crests that are currently worn. According to the text in the draft, the main objective of the reform is to “unify in a single text the provisions in force concerning uniformity and that the police can get to know the different types of uniforms, modalities and its use”, and to end alleged confusion within the police regarding their own uniforms and currencies. The National Police is currently composed of more than 68,000 agents and the cost is anticipated at being 44 euro per officer; however the total for the project then comes to 2,992,000 euro, although there could be some savings when the job is put to public tender.

ALMOST A QUAR TER OF SPANISH HOME SALES ARE TO FOREIGNERS Some 21.4% of all residential property purchased in Spain in 2013 was by foreign buyers, according to statistics released this week by the council of Notaries. In total,
55,187 homes were purchased last year by foreigners, representing a 9.8% increase on the figure from 2012. The Valencia region has seen the biggest increase in the number of foreign buyers, with 16.9&, followed by the Canary Islands with 15.7%, Andalucía with 15,6 %, Murcia at 15,2 % and Cataluña with 7,7 %. In contrast, purchases fell in Galicia by 32.5%, Castilla y León by 28.9%, Navarra by 23.4%, Aragón by 20.1%, The Basque Country by 14.1% and Madrid by 9.1%. The British are also continuing their decline however, responsible for just 14.9%, a considerable drop from the 34.3% in 2007, but still a sizeable portion of the market. This overall figure is also despite a huge increase in British purchases in November of 12%, compared to 2012. The French market is still growing in importance, with 10.9% of the purchases made by foreigners, followed by Russians with 8.2%, Germans with 7.8% and buyers from Belgium responsible for 6.9%. Denmark, Sweden and America are still looking positive, and expected to yield bigger increases in shares over the next period. But the most sizeable increase has been in purchases by non-resident buyers, in particular from Columbia with a 311.1% increase, followed by Argentina with a 97.8% climb. China and Ecuador were also favourable to this sector, increasing by 76.9% and 60% respectively.
COASTAL RESIDENTS GET DIRECT LINK TO HIGH SPEED TRAIN STOP GOVERNMENT VICTIMISATION OF PENSIONERS LIVING ABROAD Many pensioners have moved abroad whilst retaining their UK citizenship. They have all contributed to the Welfare System by paying taxes and national insurance contributions so any decision to withdraw the winter fuel payment is unjust. You can find the petition at: epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/52121
The high speed train network between Alicante and Madrid, has begun an expansion into some of the coastal towns, with the launch of combined bus and train tickets to travel from various locations now available on the website, www.renfe.com. Passengers wishing to travel from the towns of El Altet, Arenales del Sol and Santa Pola can now book their combined tickets for the bus link to the high speed AVE network, which looks likely to prove even popular than the service is already, with the train already damaging flight passenger numbers as more and more people choose to travel by land. The service is also available at other destinations throughout the country, including Castilla y León, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia, and a similar service has already been running from Dénia and Jávea to connect with the service in Valencia. In January of this year, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, announced that a combined ticket would soon be available from Torrevieja to the high speed train network, which he had hoped would be launched “within a few days”, which he had hoped would coincide with the Madrid International Tourism Fair (Fitur). According to a spokesperson at RENFE, during the launch of the Santa Pola service,
“nothing is yet sure” about the Torrevieja link. Similarly, a connection from Benidorm was hoped to be launched at the same time, with Renfe saying that there is a strong case for this, but only informal discussions have taken place.

FABRA SUSPENDS VISIT TO RUSSIAN TOURISM FAIR
The president of the Valencian Government, Alberto Fabra, has expressed concern over the tension in Russia which he cites as the reason for the cancelation of this week’s official visit to the Russian Tourism Fair. In an interview with RNE, Radio Nacional de España, he said that the situation in the Crimea seemed to be deteriorating by the day and the cancellation of his visit was especially disappointing as the encouragement of Russians visiting this part of Spain was especially necessary for the continued improvement in the Valencian economy, the Russian market being the one to have shown the largest increase in recent years. He did say that despite the cancellation of his visit the region will still be represented at the fair. He said that it is important that the West unites in its condemnation of the current measures being taken by Putin and that in his view that lack of support must be reflected in the non-presence of people from the West at the fair. However despite the boycott Fabra expressed his confidence in the Russian market saying : "Russian tourists know what we have to offer in Spain and, especially, in the Valencian Region and I am sure that if they have a choice they will still come here. ICONIC BUILDING SOLD TO CHINESE BUSINESSMAN ne of Spain´s tallest buildings, the iconic Edificio España in Madrid, has been sold to a Chinese businessman, Wang Jianli. The building was designed by architect Julián Otamendi and his brother, engineer Joaquín Otamendi, in the Neo-baroque style and constructed between 1948 and 1953. It was the tallest building in Spain until losing the title to the Torre de Madrid in 1957, also designed by Otamendi. With its 25 floors and standing at a height of 117 metres, the building is now the 8th tallest in the Spanish capital. Once home to the Crowne Plaza hotel, shopping centre and apartments until 2006, the building was to undergo extensive renovation work, with plans for a larger hotel and luxury apartments, but the building has stood empty for some time after the renovation work was paralysed in 2010. According to the President of the Comunidad de Madrid, Ignacio González, the building has been sold to the Chinese businessman, who is looking to expand into Europe, including Spain and the UK, with plans to convert the building into the luxurious hotel and shopping mall that it was destined to become. González also said that the work will inevitably lead to the “recovery of a flagship area of Madrid”, and greeted the sale with enthusiasm,

ensuring that all efforts would be made to ensure the sale and development goes through without issue.
BULLFIGHTER GORED IN VALENCIA
The first serious injury to a bullfighter occurred at the opening of the Feria de Fallas on Tuesday at the Plaza de Valencia when 43 bullfighter Enrique Ponce was injured by a bull from the Victoriano del Rio in Madrid.
Ponce suffered a severe goring which broke his collarbone and several ribs. He was carried out of the arean by his assistant bullfighter Mariano de la Viña. Ponce, a product of the Escuela Taurina de Valencia, and one of the most famous bullfighters in the country, has performed for over10 years. He is the first torero in history to fight more than 2000 corridas. He passed the mark in Ronda on September 4, 2010. Fernando Carbonell, the attendant surgeon at the Valencia bullring said that Ponce had been quite fortunate that the wound was quite clean and that it hadn’t pierced an artery. It is thought that following yesterday’s operation at the Valencia Infirmary, where he was in theatre for almost 4 hours, he will now be transferred to the Valencia Health Clinic where he will continue his recovery.

centre, the images on the screen were being fed to another person outside by a hidden video camera link. The recipient would then research the questions and provide the answers to the person sitting the test through an audio link to an earpiece. The officers were alerted when they became suspicious of a person sitting the test. Upon proceeding to identify the person, they performed a search and found a number of miscellaneous electronics and wiring stuck to his abdomen. The examining officer also spotted a mini headset stayed in the right ear and a micro camera that was disguised as a button. Officers then located another man who was in a vehicle located outside the building of the Provincial Traffic Department. The officers asked him to open the boot of the car where they found a third person who had a computer and other broadcast media. The detainees were made available to the competent judicial authority, accused of the crime of fraud against the government.
ROJALES ONLINE CAR SALES ARREST Officers from the National Police have arrested a 30 year old man in Rojales,
who is already known to the police for a series of crimes, allegedly for fraudulently selling cars online and conning innocent victims out of a total of 3,000 euro. According to police, the man would advertise the vehicles for sale, and upon receiving a genuine enquiry would request a nominal deposit of between 200 and 400 euro to secure the car. One victim who had been conned in this way reported the facts to the police in Orihuela, who investigated what had happened
and discovered at least seven victims of the scam. These victims were mostly foreigners and lived in various parts of Spain. The officers tracked down the man in Rojales and performed the arrest, with the investigation still open, the officers not ruling out finding more victims.

ARRESTS IN ELECTRIC BIKE SCAM Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested 2 people for dealing in counterfeit electric vehicles, with fraudulently acquired profits possibly being in the region of one million euro. According to the notes from the investigation, some 300 vehicles had been imported into Spain and then altered to enable them to be passed off as originals from the Chinese manufacturer. The investigation began following a complaint from an official distributor in Spain of the originally branded electric vehicles and accessories. During a raid in a workshop in Alicante, officers discovered what they described as rudimentary tools for painting fake logos, as well as special devices for masking the original manufacturer of the inferior items. The company is believed to have been trading for over a year in the area, dealing in electric bikes and motorbikes, selling them under the trademarked brand of the Chinese company. The two people arrested are said to be residents of Alicante, identified by the initials JMB and MMM, who are suspected of being involved in crimes of fraud, forgery and against intellectual property. The Guardia Civil have not ruled
out more arrests and charges, as they have also identified a network of at least 23 other individuals involved in the sale and distribution of the electric bikes and motorbikes, plus their accessories, having already identified 298 vehicles in the scam.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Where there’s a Will.......... Several of our friends have died this year. It comes to us all eventually; death, that is. As the old adage goes, ‘the two certainties in life are death and taxation’, and the death of family and close friends certainly concentrates the mind. Without being too morbid about the issue, I guess the only way to deal with it, as it is a certainty, is that we had better ensure that we make a good job of it, and not create too much of a burden for others after our passing. A few days ago, I received an email from a recently retired British couple, who had moved to Spain and needed a will to cover their new property. They asked if they could simply update their UK wills, or whether they need to have new ones prepared especially for their new assets in Spain? There seems to be considerable uncertainty amongst many expats, who think that as they have a will in the UK, there is no need to have one in Spain. I still even meet expats who boast over their gin and tonics that they have no written wills at all, and that Spanish inheritance laws will deal nicely with the issue when the time comes. Maybe this is the case, but only after considerable expense and distress for those that they leave behind. This often-held view about inheritance laws may be partly true if the
transfer of the estate is a simple one; for example, from husband to wife. However, it is not without considerable expense and delays for heirs if there is no Spanish will and executors have to rely on a UK will. The reason is that Spanish inheritance laws are very different from those in the UK, and that there is no guarantee that assets will be distributed in the way that the deceased had intended. The message is clear; it is important that expats with property or other assets in the country make a Spanish will. Having a Spanish will does not mean that your UK will is forgotten. However, your UK will would be concerned only with those assets that you still own in the UK, whilst your Spanish will would deal with your Spanish property and assets. Needless to say, it is very important that you continue to update both wills should circumstances change, such as separation, divorce or death of a partner. It is important to remember that if an update to your UK will is required, your Spanish will is not revoked in the process. The best way to overcome this issue is to ensure that the first clause of your UK will has words to the effect of “I revoke all my earlier UK Wills, but not my Spanish Will”, or words to that effect. In many of the expat destinations in Spain there are a number of people who will offer to prepare your Spanish will for you. Be careful with this one; my best advice is to have it prepared by a suitably qualified Spanish lawyer, and registered at the Central Wills Registry in Madrid. IN THE BUNKER WITH ‘MICK THE GRIP’ The Legends Golf and Safari Resort, Limpopo, South Africa, features the “Extreme” 19th which is the world’s longest and highest par three, only accessible by helicopter. Golfers are faced with a 394 yard tee shot, and the ball takes 30 seconds to drop to the Africa shaped green 470 yds below. It costs over $1,000 per foursome to play this hole. That includes the helicopter ride and six balls with tracking devices, just in case (in case?) of a lost ball. Nobody has yet claimed the million dollars for a hole in one, but Padraig Harrington (that’s not him in the budgie smugglers) was the first pro to make par. THE CENTENARY course at Gleneagles has undergone extensive modifications by the Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear design team in preparation for the Ryder Cup. Jack described the new 18th: “On this reachable par 5 (513 yards) we have placed a new bunker to the right of the first landing area, then added more bunkers short and right of the green, with the deepest bunker just in front. This will leave three options. One: they can play their second shot up the right side and short, leaving a pitch over the bunkers to the green. Two: they can take it up the left side, leaving a short pitch up the length of the green. Or three: they can take it all the way home. We wanted to give them the opportunity to take a gamble. Also, the 18th green now has a tremendous amphitheatre, ready for a showstopper finish. I think the guys will enjoy it.” Only if they win. Having met his Alamo in Scotland, failing to prevent construction of wind farms in the sea opposite
his Aberdeenshire golf resort, Donald Trump has huffily changed allegiance to Ireland. He snapped up the Doonbeg Golf Club, C. Clare for €15 million, complete with 5 star hotel and spa and a Greg Norman designed links course. Doonbeg, which went into receivership in January, welcomed Donald with open arms, saying he has saved 200 jobs. At least somebody loves him. 180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams, Paul Durrant x2, Lee Maiden x3 (Meerkats), Sid Cross x3 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters), Mike Smith, Mel Dawson (Breakaways Bears) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 Shortest leg: 14 darts Lee Maiden, Meerkats After all the hullabaloo of Champions League, Europa League and Six Nations rugby its back to reality and what we all enjoy, Euronics darts. The league is back to normal this week after last week´s La Zenia Tool Hire preliminary pairs matches and with only 5 weeks remaining the Meerkats stranglehold on the championship continues, with the Breakaways League Plate still in contention. The Kats put in a pretty good shift on their visit to the excellent Breakaways bar, albeit the hosts were suffering from not fielding a full side and that usually means only one outcome. A creditable performance from Jay Sharp 3x100 and a winning D19 against Eddie Bendelow was the highlight for the Bears, Joe Hammond aiding and abetting with a single ton. One or two mentions in despatches for the visitors, an excellent 701 triples from Lee Maiden 100, Paul Durrant 140, and Derek Kingsbury 134,D10 gave the Kats a 2-0 lead after Kingsbury had taken the team game on D5. The captain once again figured in the second pair with Maiden, scoring 121,100 and another D5 for 5-0. In the remaining doubles Sharp recorded his first of 3 tons against Durrant and Graham Todd, but it was Durrant doing the damage with a 180, the Kats 7th of the season and a D20 for all 6 legs at curry time. Pat Abrams featured in the first singles looking more and more like George Michael wearing his designer stubble and playing like him up to the break, opened with 140,100 against Hammond´s
100 and then pegged out on D8 for the match and both points. Alex Nikolov increased the lead finishing 56 in two and then the unequalled Sarah Simpson resplendent in thigh high boots faced Durrant in shorts looking like he was waiting to be whipped. It was Durrant who came out on top, excusing any connotations, with a reasonable 20 dart leg, 140,121,D10 which could have been a lot quicker. Kingsbury made it 10 without reply on D16 his fourth match winning double of the evening, Maiden facing two ton Sharp in the next, the Kat completing the leg on D8. Gogarty´s were back to their winning ways this week at the expense of the Pirates from PB´s, who are struggling for their second victory of the season. Captain Gail Todd got her Gophers off to a quick start taking the first two legs, courtesy of Brian Newton hitting a 69 out on D20 and Elaine Willis on D2, despite some retaliation from Michelle Lane, 100,83. Newton doing the damage in the second leg with 100,101 and 81. Phil Batt pulled one back for the Pirates on D7, team mate Eddie Martin 100 setting up the finish. Martin continued where he left off in the first doubles with Gilly Kirby, scoring 84,85 and D5 for 2 apiece, this despite a spirited response from Cynthia Jevons 83,85,76. The Pirates found themselves unusually in the lead after the next Batt 132,96 and Mika Oksanom D12 taking out Todd 95 and Richard Patterson 97. The Gophers made it all square at the break via John Linton 125,85,95 and D2, Lane countering for the Pirates with 134. Patterson was chosen to kick off the second half and obliged Captain Todd with an early victory on D8. Steve Woods added another on D3 for 5-3. Pirate Barry Weston featured next to face Linton, the Pirate having throw. It didn’t really matter as the Gopher reeled off 100,81,100,137 and S20,D20 to earn his side the draw and at least one point. Martin took the next, playing Jevons, hoping to retrieve the match and shared points. Enter stage, super sub Bliss Wright in a showdown with PB´s governor Phil Batt. The Pirate had already top scored and taken two winning doubles earlier and must have felt good facing his much better looking opponent. Well the outcome was Wright kicked his Batt with some great scores and the all important double this time D2 for the match and points. Newton looked likely to make it 8 for the hosts with 100,85 and 95 to leave D10, versus Lane who herself hit 81 to leave D8 which was immediately converted for a 7-5 result. Porterhouse and Hattons Hunks closed in on 4th placed Busters who suffered a crushing defeat at Que Pasa. One or two individuals have expressed their desire to play for the Porters next term and knowing their identities the Porters would be looking for a top three slot. In the meantime, the top six place would probably suffice as Porters and the Hunks are due to play each other on April 17th. A massive 140 from Queen Marie Dunne in the team game wasn’t enough to prevent the Porters from taking an early lead via the joker of the pack Peter Ayres on D4. Ray Sanderson made it 2 up after the first triple, neither side finding the lipstick with any accuracy. Mike Newberry livened affairs up in the third with a 136. The Queens answer was to bust 94 via Ann Griffiths, must remember to get Ann a birthday calculator. Newberry was very grateful and showed his appreciation by converting D4 for 3-0. Joker Ayres paired with Newberry in the first double playing ambidextrous Rachael Broadhead and Vi Turner. Not only did the comedian hit a 140 but the double as well D5. Ray Hayes made it 5-0 and then a little showboating from Sue Sanderson, not one normally to take the limelight, going for D12 and hitting D5 and D7 in two for at least the draw at half time.
TUESDAY NIGHT TRIOS TEN PIN BOWLING LEAGUE This week saw the start of our three week Easter Scramble, kindly sponsored by Right Move Insurance of Quesada and La Zenia, where bowlers have to string strikes together to claim raffle tickets, which will give them the opportunity to claim prizes in the raffle, to be drawn on the 8th April. Juans' Warriors took on Lucky Strike and, although JW wanted some tickets, it was only LS that collected four and won the game 6 – 2. The Dreamers Don “I never can get two strikes in a row” Galley almost single handedly blew away Hall y Day, managing 5 tickets on the night, ably assisted by David Davies with two and, Allan Flitman with one. Even Lesley Day of HyD managing 2 tickets couldn't prevent a 8 – 0 defeat. Bar Mosquitos continued 'laughing the night away' and comfortably beat The Mixers 6 – 2 and, claimed the team high game handicap on the night of 652. Team Finland had expected another comfortable win over Cornish Pride but, finding the lanes 'a little difficult', lost the first game by 16 pins and, if it wasn't
for Olli Leppanens two 200+ games, could easily have lost the other two. As it was they scrambled a 6 – 2 victory out of near defeat, to maintain their grip on top spot. The only draw of the night 4 – 4 saw Caballo Negro continued their recent improvement, by matching Splash. Juanjo Carral of Splash rolling a 224 and 615 scratch game and series, to take the individual honours on the night. Crazy Pinz found Los Bandidos far to strong and were completely outplayed, finally losing 8 – 0 by over 200 pins. Split Happens knew they were in for a hard night and, if Los Lobos had been bowling any other team on the night, they would have taken points. But with Gary Walsh bowling his seasons high series scratch and handicap of 595 and 661, and the SH Team taking the h/c team series of 1821 on the night, took all 8 points. We have no bowling next week 25th March, so we'll all be back on the 1st April, to continue our efforts for more tickets in the Easter Scramble.
Cheryl Sleath couldn’t prevent Ray Hayes claiming victory on D10 in the first single. Yvonne Rouffignac looked a certainty to take the next with some heavy scoring including a 118, but it was Ann O´Keeffe doing some handy scoring of her own and finally taking out D4 for the Queens first leg. The Royals are certainly suffering of late, firstly Rachael Broadhead contracts dodgy bowling shoulders and now O´Keeffe has eye ulcers causing blurred vision presumably the reason she won. The rampant Newberry was next on the oche to face Ann Griffiths and despite some good scoring from the Porter, he was unable to prevent the Royals taking consecutive legs on D9. That was the Queens lot as the Porters reeled off the remaining legs through Ray Sanderson 100,D10, Ayres 100,95,D1 and that girl Sue Sanderson on D4, currently making a habit of winning. A short skip and a jump from the Pint Depot Kings found themselves at Stewart McCulloch´s Hattons bar to face the Hunks. The Kings are in prime position to take the Breakaways League Plate and were certainly looking for a point with the opposition looking for both to achieve a final top four position. The visitors started off in a mean mood, Gary Minor bagging 2x100, Martyn Bynorth and Dave Wright supporting well. Keith King and Joe Hawkins replied with tons, leaving Kenny Wilkinson to put the leg away on D10. Hawkins hit a further ton in the next and added D8 to go 2-0 up. Minor upped the ante in the second triple and was rewarded with the vital double after contributing 85 and 140. Some heavy scoring from all four players in the opening doubles, culminated in Wilkinson taking out D4 despite a 140,70 and 80 from Matt Cummins, Eddie Fozzard also contributing. The formidable pairing of Minor and Bynorth 95,139 wasn’t enough to prevent Hawkins taking out D16, partner McCulloch doing his bit in the leg. Some powerful scoring from Steph Simpson 100,98 and George Mint 115 looked likely to make it 5-1 to the hosts at half time, but Wright and Ian Sleath sneaked it, Wright hitting the double for 42. A steady opening single from Simpson D2 against Frankie Wurrorck made it 5-2 in favour of the Hunks. A high scoring match between Minor and McCulloch ended with King Minor making it 5-3 on D7. Wright continuing some good form hit D4 for 5-4 and some spoils from the match a realistic chance. Fozzard wasn’t quite up to it in his single and Mint took full advantage with a 130 and D16 for at least a draw. Cummins outscored Hunk Wilkinson in the 11th leg, finishing off his 501 on D5 for 6-5 and all to play for. Bynorth couldnt find the form he is capable of and with the misfortune of playing an in form Hawkins succumbed to a D16 from the likeable Hunk, both points going to the hosts in a closely fought match. Entries for the Alex Nikolov Ladies Singles and the La Zenia Tool Hire Mens Singles are now being processed for the draw to take place later this week. Games are scheduled for 10th April. By Steve Hibberd Super Sycamores held their nerve on the final day of SABA league season. Captain Ted and his merry band finished 5 points clear of their nearest rival, clinching 2nd spot in div 2, thus bouncing back to div 1 at the first attempt. At home to Horadada Falcons, these 4 rinks helped earn their team 7 points: F Tilley, T Lemon, T Lawton 16-15. Joan Oliver, B Doran, D Dudding, 17-8. M Beardsall, A Brown, G Watt 31-10. N Inwood, Jim Oliver, J Wilcock 18-18. Maples meanwhile, ended their div 1 campaign at home to San Miguel Pulsars. Having briefly toyed with relegation, as captain I'm pleased to report that gaining 6 points from this match, ensured a mid table position was achieved. Get in there: S Stead, S Mahomet, M Fryatt 19-15. M Lockley, S Hibberd, I Brewster 19-17. P Lockley, L Morris, T Hill 20-19. In div 3, Chestnuts made the short trip to La Marina, where they took on Pathfinders. Although they lost 10-4, team captain Chris Dewar is pleased at how the season unfolded, and gives thanks to C & M Thomas + D Giddings, for helping out at short notice. Well done: D Giddings, C Thomas, C Langlois 20-13. H Langlois, D Thompson, V Duchart 13-12. No winter league results received. A touring team from Rhiwbina, near Cardiff, played GBC in a thoroughly enjoyable friendly match. A 5 rinks to 1 victory for the hosts wasn't a true reflection of the match, for some of the rinks were extremely close encounters. Totus & Dragon Insurance Saturday Challenge was back again last week, following a week's hiatus due to club championship finals. David Bray was a clear winner, but Eileen Merrick (2nd), Ron Stansfield (3rd) & Dave Giddings (4th), all tied on shots, so count back determined final positions. Jim McLean had a choice of 4 shining wooden spoons to choose from - lucky man!! In the last Fed 4s match of the season, Bulls lost 2-6 at home to Country Bowls Clarets, with this rink earning the points: G Bater, S Hibberd, B & L Miller 15-12. Unfortunately, over at San Luis, our Bears lost 8-0 to the Blues (new champs), and are relegated back to div 2. Greenlands hosted the CBBA Provincial side last Friday, followed by an excellent menu del dia in downtown Los Montesinos. Of the 3 ladies rinks, Greenlands came out on top in 2 of them, but in the mens rinks, it was Provincial who reversed the score. So, it all boiled down to shots difference, and as it was tied 87 all, an honourable draw was definitely the right result for the occasion. Our thoughts go out to club member John Wray, who's currently in a Barnsley hospital, recovering from a recent heart attack. Get well soon John. Greenlands bowls club are pleased to announce that any prospective members are welcome. All non members, including holiday makers, are invited to join in Saturday morning club sessions, now known as 'Totus and Dragon Insurance Challange'. For further information, please contact Hayley in the bar area, on 966 84 4399. Sponsored by Totus and Dragon Insurance
SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB By Pat McEwan Monday saw the last games of the season in the SABA leagues. San Miguel Pulsars were away to Greenlands. Neither team had anything to prove so both went out for an enjoyable mornings bowling with no pressure. The Pulsars came out on top winning 8 points to 6. There were some very close games, with four rinks depending on the outcome of the last end. Thanks to the team skipped by Dave McEwan, Mary Dyer and Chris Parsons having a good win, we got the overall shots. Anne Young, Keith Green, Dave Young were 22 across but picked up one point on the 18th end. Noel Davis, Joe Dear, Ray Parker won 24-19. Peter Whitehall team lost by one, Ann Eagles team went into the 18th end 2 points in front, but unfortunately lost 4 on the last end. Shots 122 to 110. Well Done to all who have played in the Pulsars this season. We finished 6th in the league. The Meteors played at Country Bowls for their last games, needing a minimum of 10 points to ensure they won the devision. After a well fought game it became apparent that the result on rink one became the deciding factor and all on the last wood. The rink won by one shot thus making the Meteors champions of the Enterprise League. Without mentioning names it was a great team performance throughout the season and it achieved the well deserved reward. San Miguel 10 points Country Bowls 4 points. Well Done Meteors. The Federation Fours, Mohawks team played at home against Monte Mar winning 6 points to 2. Pat McEwan, Alan Booth, Pete Masters, Cyril Medley won 57-47. Joe Dear, Tony Sanson, Stuart Denholm, Dave McEwan won 25-9. Shots 57 to 47. The Mohawks finished 2nd in the C division Well Done All. The Apaches were at home to Emerald Isle Leprechauns and came away with 6 points to 2. Paul Thomas, Alan Campbell, Len Rudge, John Raby won 17-14. Carol Rudge, Nancy Campbell, John Marshall, Ann Eagle won 19-12. Hard lines to Malcolm Parsons team only losing by 1 shot. The Apaches came 4th in the B division. The Choctaws were third in the A division. On Monday 24th March San Miguel are playing host to a visiting team from the Isle of Wight, commencing at 2pm. Come along and enjoy watching a touring team. Dont forget Wednesday afternoons at 1.30, Come along and have a friendly game of bowls with no pressure for only 5 euros, including bowls and shoes and tuition if needed. Remember we all had to learn at one time. Further information from our President Eileen Potts Telephone 966730376.
CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY This week we returned to the testing La Serena golf course for our weekly stableford competition on a warm and fairly calm day. The course was in very good condition with good fairways and the greens were the best many had experienced for a long time being receptive, even paced and true but tricky to read which led to some good scoring with over half of the players scoring 30 or more. The results on the day were: Nearest the pin on hole 9 was Nick Lewis Nearest the pin on hole 17 was Patricia Creegan Nearest the pin in 2 on the par4 10th was Norman McGibbon Longest Drive on hole 18 was Martin Cunningham. Winner with 37 points was Tommy Clarke. Runner up with 36 points was Edward Taylor. Next week we are paying our first visit of the year to Altorreal meet at the bar at 08:45.

Mynott. Wednesday saw our Winter League team taking on a very strong San Luis team with very little success as we lost by 10 points to 2 and by 96 shots to 74, our only winners were Martin Foulcer, Beryl Regan, Ian Kenyon and Maggie Furness, well done you four. On Thursday in the Fed Fours we struggled even more losing at home to La Marina by 7 points to 1 and by 52 shots to 38. Our only rink to contribute was Stuart Allman, Sandra and Neil Burrows and Brian Dunn who managed a draw. With the Winter leagues all but finished we can say that our successes in the Southern League and the SABA Discovery Division have helped to compensate for perhaps some slightly disappointing performances in the other leagues but watch out for us next year. EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB The Claymores completed their season's fixtures with a visit to Quesada and after a reasonable season they came down with a bump, winning on just two rinks. Shot difference, 136 to 92 so 10 points to Quesada and 4 to EI. Thanks to all who stood in at the last minute to help out throughout the season. The League winners completed their wonderful season with an overwhelming win against La Marina Seagulls. Losing on just one rink and with a shot difference of 105 to 85, another winning score of 12 points to 2 - the Cavaliers haven't stopped dancing yet! EI Outlaws at home to La Siesta Golds suffered another home defeat, completing a disappointing season, winning on only one rink with 2 points to 12 and a shot difference of 82 to 126. Not a happy day for the Outlaws. Monday, 17 March St. Patrick's Day and the final game for the Moonrakers, at home to San Luis Romulans. A very important game for both Clubs, unfortunately resulting in a win for the visitors, leaving the Moonrakers at the bottom of the League. Shot difference 88 to 117 and 3 points to EI against 11 to San Luis. A poor end to a disastrous season for the Moonrakers. EI Titans played an away game, also against San Luis, and soon found the going tough against a strong Trekkers team. Winning on one rink, they were truly beaten with a shot difference of 65 to the Trekkers' 122 - 2 points to 12. EI Neptunes were at home to Quesada Diamonds on a beautiful bowling afternoon. The sun must have inspired the home side, resulting in a very good win on five rinks and a shot difference of 96 to 90, 12 points to EI, 2 to the Diamonds. Smiles all round!

THE HISTORY OF GOLF - PART 1 Have you ever wondered when putting yourself through physical and mental torture on a golf course how the game originated, well here is a brief potted history of the game of golf? The first stick and ball game that we know was a Russian game called ‘paganica’, which moved through Europe via Germany and France to Holland, where the Dutch made the most of it, playing a game they called ’kolf’. There is historical evidence of the Dutch playing something called ‘kolf’ going back to 1300.There is no evidence of golf in Scotland before 1450.Kolf’ a game played on ice in the winter and fields in the summer died out in Holland in 1700.It was probably Scottish wool merchants who took the game to the British Isles. At the time while Scotland was a poor country, Holland was rich and the Scottish merchants took their wool across the North Sea to be sold and sometimes encountered unfavourable winds and probably filled their time playing ‘kolf’. They took the game to Scotland and it was there that the game changed forever and took root. There on the east coast of Scotland, with an abundance of land, the game was transformed from playing to a stake on ice to playing on natural land to a rabbit scrape.…a hole. I truly believe that the game as we know it today would never have evolved without rabbits. The rabbits would gather in hollows and nibble grass and prevent scrub vegetation from overrunning the links land. In the middle of the scrape, the buck rabbit would create a hole and urinate in it to mark his territory and the early golfers would play from one hollow to the next. The hole was usually marked with a gull feather…it was very simple golf. So there you have it, the history of the origins of golf. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. TMGS Match Report Villamartin
Our mid month extra game was played at Alenda it seemed strange to play on a Tuesday , but we had some players who usually cannot play on Fridays. The course was in excellent condition for our fun game and some good scores were recorded. Winners of the Mulligan Stapleford were gold division Colin Fear,Silver division and overall winner was Bill Malcolm who is improving every week. Nearest the pins only two one the day Theresa Wright on the 13th and George Marshall Deane on the 16th where he also recorded his first ever "Birdie" as he gets a shot on that hole we tried to persuade him that it counted as a hole in one which necessitates a round of drinks but he was not having none of it, never the less a good session was had back at Rubys bar. A golf book was awarded to Graham Hall for the longest walk. Our next game on March 21st is at Alicante prizes and buffet is sponsored by John Griggs in memory of his late father. Anyone wishing to join us for a game can contact us @ rubys golf @yahoo.co.uk
On this day in history, Wyatt Earp was born in 1848 and back in Blighty in 1938 The BBC televised its first rugby match, the Calcutta Cup game between England and Scotland at Twickenham. Scotland won 21-16. Must be about the only time they won. The day started well with the weather almost perfect for golf, warm and slightly overcast for the 36 members and guests and our starting tee 10 took its toll on “faded” shots off of the tee. As the day went on, the greens started to dry out and slow turned to “bloody hell” with many 3 putts being recorded. Even though the greens were a little ‘sharp’, there were a few scores in the 30’s albeit only 2 bettered their handicaps and John Hagart was seen sharpening his scissors. All 4 NTP’s – kindly sponsored by Vernon Brown and his party – were claimed with the family Hagart claiming 2 of them with Bill Wylie and Dag Lovas the others. The Silver chaps (and ladies) fared quite well with 34 points being needed for John Hagart to take 4th spot. Per Skarnes’s 35 was good enough for 3rd and Kit Dowse’s 36 took 2nd. Colin Marsden’s 38nwas top score of the day for the winner’s slot in the Silver Division. The Gold Division was just as tight with Alan Rickers taking 4th with 33 points (on count-back) and Arne Hannson and Vernon Brown’s 34 points taking 3rd and 2nd place. This left Steve Higgins with 37 points to take the top spot in that Division. Photo: Silver Category Winners Our next game, 28th March 2014 see’s us at Font De Llop for our last round of the Captain’s Stableford event so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.
The Orange Tree Golf Society At Saurines - Tuesday 18th March Once again this newly formed golf society met to play its bi-monthly society event. Considering it was St Patricks day the day prior the Captain decided to meet at the course on the day instead of the Restaurant. Also after a wonderful day/night on the Cabo Roig strip celebrating with the good folk of Ireland, it was nice to see that all the members turned up at the course in good time and in fine spirits. On arrival at the course we were once again met with lovely weather, the golfing gods have been shining on us this year. Plus we were once again made very welcome by the staff of one of the best courses on the Costa. Thanks must go to these people for making the day go smoothly. This time around it was the 2nd game of the Presidents Trophy, which is a Individual Stapleford competition run throughout the year with the winner being the most consistent golfer throughout the year. We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree Bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig for the presentation and lovely snacks and drinks. Thanks to Chris, Nigel, Lilly, Hannah and Viv for providing these and the wonderful welcome also. Winner this time round was Dave Eadington with 38 Points (and new Handicap), 2nd - Simon Sharples - 37, 3rd - Kedric Rhodes - 32 and 4th Digger Digby with 30. Both NTP´s went to Chris Blown on the 10th & 18th, with no 2´s being recorded this week. The next Society event is the Spring Cup on the 1st April (no it is not a joke) at is at La Torre. All golfers of any standard are welcome to join us on that day and will be made most welcome into the society. Names can either be placed on the golfers notice board with the restaurant or by phoning the Orange Tree on 965323235 or emailing on orangetree@Hotmail.es All the society dates and venues for 2014 can be found on the website www.orangetree-caboroig All players please meet at The Orange Tree bar and restaurant on the Monday night prior (31st March) between 5 - 6pm to pay your fee plus know the draw.
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY - W/E 21 MAR 14 We started the week with a Best 2 from 4 with all four scores counting on holes 1, 9, 10 and 18. The draw had seen the 4 youngest male members of the Society drawn together and on this occasion 'youth' overcame experience with the team of Rod Doel, Phil Herrington, Nick Campbell and Mike Chapman winning the game with a very good score of 90 pts. Nick was the top scorer for the winners with 35 pts with Rod and Mike making significant contributions throughout the round. Phil was obviously saving himself for Wednesday's Medal round! The runners up with 88 pts were Olga Douglas, Joyce McClusky, Tom Hardie and Ken Meredith. On Wednesday we played the second round of our monthly Medal competition which counts towards the Club's Medal Championship. It is the best 4 from 6 rounds with 6 pts being awarded to first place, 5 for second and so on. There is a separate Ladies and Gents competition but prizes on the day are given to the first 3 places in Category 1

OLD SCORES SETTLED DON’T HELP ELCHE BY JOHN MCGREGOR
GRANADA .........1 ELCHE CF ..........0
I
n keeping with past tradition there was very little between the two sides in this crucial game near the bottom of La Liga. At least this time Granada did actually win the game, two years ago in the second division play off finals, after two drawn games Granada were promoted only on away goals. Elche made up for it by deservedly achieving promotion as champions last year but there is little love lost between both clubs. Elche’s side contained several changes from last week’s goalless draw, the most significant being the Romanian Sapunaru having a rare start at left back, due to the continued absence of injured captain and deadball specialist Albacar. Both sides had chances in the first half, but it remained goalless. On the hour El Arabi burst over the halfway line leaving Sanchez for dead, and slipped the ball inside to Brahami who
took the ball on before sliding it into the corner past the despairing Herrera. Sapunaru was sent off for a second yellow shortly after, and despite all three substitutes`used Elche could not get anything from the game. 24 goals in 29 games is poor, but the Franjiverdes are still three priceless points clear of Valladolid who drew 1 – 1 with fellowstrugglers Rayo Vallecano - a good result for Elche. The Franjiverdes sit three crucial points about Valladolid who head the bottom three teams in the relegation zone, where everyone is fighting to stay up with nine games to go. On Tuesday night at the heavily unfashionable hour of 10pm the Franjiverdes entertain 4th placed Athletic Bilbao, well behind the leading three but seven points above neighbours Real Sociedad in fifth, so hopefully points aren’t crucial to the Basque side. At home Athletic are strong but have lost six away. On paper Elche’s chances aren’t good - but on grass – who knows? Mucho Elche! Photo: www.elchecf.es

THE WIND AND LUIS BLOW REDOVAN AWAY Daya Nueva 4-2 Redovan CF Cadets Alicante 2A - The game kicked off with a gale force wind blowing straight down the pitch into the home side's faces. So it was no surprise that the visitors went straight on the offensive but the strength of the wind was even causing Redovan problems with the control of the ball. On 10 minutes a silly mistake by Daya allowed the visitors a shot from distance and with the wind helping the ball flew into an empty net. Daya were playing some nice football, keeping the ball on the ground and passing well. A good run out of defence by Jose Gregorio on 16 minutes saw his pass to Luis taken round the goalkeeper and slotted home for the equaliser. Daya were playing the much better of the two sides and went close on a couple of occasions, but with the conditions still favouring the visitors and they were always a constant threat. Could Daya get to half time with the scores level and gain a psychological advantage, the answer was yes ! Within minutes of the restart and the wind now at their backs Daya had their visitors in all sorts of trouble, but just could not find the back of the net. If this pressure from the home side continued then Redovan would be struggling to get anything from the game. The home side had a great chance from a free kick on 50 minutes but Jose Gregorio's effort went well wide. If Redovan thought that they could get back in the game they found that Luis had other ideas as on 55 minutes his superb turn and shot made it 2 - 1 Daya. Just a minute later Angel buried a penalty that Daya had been very fortunate to be awarded. Luis was at it again on 59 minutes when his strong run and shot made it 4 - 1 and he had scored 3 of them ! There was very little coming from Redovan now, the wind and Luis having blown them away. With the clock counting down the visitors pulled a goal back when a shot looped over Miguel (on for Danni) to make the final score 4 - 2. It was a good win for Daya in conditions that were very difficult at times. The Match Official had a good game, he was up with play at all times, not at all easy given the strong winds. Man of the Match for Daya was the hat trick hero, Luis. Team Sponsor: Segurlab Daya Dave

DANI MESEGUER ‘RED’ SPOILS TORRY FIGHTBACK NOVELDA CF ...............3 FC TORREVIEJA.........1 The advantage of playing in the Estadio La Magdalena seemed to be the Rubén Albés main advantage going into Sunday evenings fixture against FC Torrevieja having to go back to week 5 of the season to see when Novelda last slipped up at home. Indeed it is only the home form that is keeping the hosts in the hunt for a playoff place so 3 points was an absolute necessity to to maintain touching distance with the top four. But despite their indifferent form of late FC Torrevieja only trail their hosts by 4 points, and this after picking up just one victory in their 5 most recent outings, the narrow 2-1 home success last Sunday against Pinoso. And we all know how erratic their performances can be so the hundred or so supporters making the journey up the AP7 to Novelda were wondering just which Torry side would turn out. Some of that skill and passion displayed at Utiel could still see the Torrevijense return to the hunt with nine matches of the season remaining. Unfortunately, on the day, the Torry team had little to offer and, certainly during the opening half they posed only a minimal threat. Manager, Anselmo Serrano, currently undergoing a pitchside ban, was seated in the stand while favourite Alberto was also missing through suspension. However, despite their lack of fluency the first opportunity fell to the visitors with Dani Lucas drawing a fine save from Garrido in the Novelda goal. Thereafter, in a half that provided a great deal of excitement, it was pretty much all the Rubén Albés
Sergi went close from a narrow angle on 15 minutes for the home side and moments later a fine save from Carlos in the Torry goal denied Felix after he met an Inarejos corner with a powerful header. It seemed as though the inevitable goals would arrive and in fairness Torry did well to hold out under Novelda pressure until the half hour. Leading scorer Sergi, a 2013 signing from Getafe, stole in to gather a loose ball. After beating two Torry defenders he lifted an exquisite chip over the head of Carlos which snuck in between crossbar and post to put the home side into a deserved lead. At this stage Novelda really were in the driving seat. Micro had a shot against the run of play moments later before Inarejos added a second for the home side after he rounded Carlos following a superb through ball. As the visitors trooped in for their half time chat it was difficult to know what Anselmo could possibly do to turn the game around? Well whatever he did say the second half performance was much better, much more spirited, and although Torry lost by a couple they did restore some pride in their play when they pulled a goal back on 80 minutes following a fierce strike from Dani Meseguer and although this provided some anxious moments for Novelda these were quickly abated when the same player received a straight red card for a challenge in front of the dug out just 2 minutes later. Novelda immediately regained control against the Torry 10 and an injury time strike from Javi settled the nerves and secured the points to keep them in the race. Unfortunately this was not the case for Torrevieja as now, with a gap of 8 pts, the task is probably beyond their reach. Next Sunday a lunchtime kick off at the Vicente Garcia with Torry looking to do the double against CF Cullero.
La Serena 19-3-14 The March outing of the society was held at the La Serena course which is just a short run down the coast and is generally in a good condition. We set out with the weather forecast of part sunny and cloudy but there was no mention of the very strong wind that picked up as soon as we went out onto the course. Course designers must have extraordinary second sight because how else do they design a course where the wind is in your face for fifteen out of the eighteen holes ? I cannot remember playing any course where there were an equal number of wind against and wind assisted holes in the last ten years or indeed ever in Spain. A random draw was performed in the clubhouse for start times and so we set off to do battle with the course. Looking at the scores at the end of the day , the course won the battle hands down as only one player scored more than thirty points. On the nearest the pin holes, nobody hit the difficult third over the water whilst Andy Trefry was closest on the ninth. Dave Smith was the winner on the fifteenth and Brian Ead was closest on the seventeenth. All the players received a sleeve of balls donated by Alec Aspen. In the par three competition, the runaway winner was Graham Pattenden with an unbeatable score of eleven points whilst three players tied on the par five results with Carol Firth winning with seven points by virtue of the lowest handicap. Both players winning vouchers donated by John Sanchez for “jake the barbers” in Quesada. In the main stableford event, in second place was Roy Greenway with twenty nine points winning a meal voucher courtesy of “Quesada country club” and the winner on the day was Tony Wilson with thirty one points who also won a meal voucher for “chalmers bar” in Benimar. We all then returned to our new venue of “The Sportsman bar” where we had a great meal laid on by Yolande and Ron which made up for the poor golf on the day. Next meeting is at Bonalba on the fifteenth of April. For details about the society then please contact John Kemp at benijofargolf@hotmail.com or on 605 195 056.
