MEDITERRANEAN FACING INCREASED TRENDS OF EXTREME W EATHER
In a weekend when we force our own climate change upon ourselves, as Daylight Saving Time begins, putting the clocks forward one hour, we also celebrated another phenomenon around the globe, as the planet went dark for an hour in recognition of how the planet and our climate is changing around us, and the risks posed if we continue to ignore this growing problem. At 20:30 local time on Saturday, the lights were switched off on numerous iconic buildings around the globe. The Sydney Opera House in Australia, where it all began in 2007, the Empire State building in New York, the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham palace in the UK, the City of
Arts and Science in Valencia and the Palace in Madrid, all dimming their lights for an hour, with more than 7,000 cities in 157 countries taking part, along with millions of individuals. The idea of this event is the now annual occurrence of Earth Hour, “a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet, which is organised by WWF”, with the aim of “encouraging an interconnected global community to share the opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable world”. In Orihuela, the town hall had announced their intention to join in the concept of Earth Hour, by switching off the lights on municipal buildings for Earth Hour, with the Los Verdes of Torrevieja urging the government team there to take part. The Zenia Boulevard also joined in, switching off their lights, all joining in on a local level with a global concept that matters to us all. Continued on Page 2

Continued From Page 1 The ideas of climate change and global warming are dismissed by many, some with a passion, but it is obvious that it is starting to affect us all. Overuse of industrial insecticides in food production is believed to be responsible for the death of bees around the planet, a matter of grave concern as bees are the number one pollinator of plants, and without the bees, many everyday food items that we take for granted would simply disappear from our shelves. A Whole Foods Market in Rhode Island, carried out a dramatic reconstruction of what their produce section would look like in a world without bees. Of the 453 products on offer, 237 were removed, including apples, avocados, carrots, mangoes, lemons, aubergine, and many others. Butterflies are the second most important pollinator of plants, although more so for the nonfood variety, they are still of vital importance, and yet many local authorities encourage the mass destruction of caterpillars, thus reducing the number of butterflies. Hay fever sufferers will be all too aware of the increase in wayward pollen in the air, and the subsequent allergic reactions suffered as a result of the destruction of nature’s own controlling factors. In a province of China, birds became a thing of fantasy, as hundreds of thousands died, and the remainder simply left the area, a situation which followed a mass termination of ant colonies, thus depleting their food supply. Much the same as mosquitoes, a nuisance though they might be, they serve a valuable purpose in the food chain, and the overactive control methods of the human race are set to have a devastating effect on the bird population. Deforestation is a word normally associated with the Amazon rain forests, but it is equally a problem on our own doorstep, with the North West of Spain and into Portugal being particularly problematic, as Global Forest Watch, an interactive and real time monitoring tool proves. All of this destruction also aids
Monday, 31st March, 2014 the spread of non-native plants and creatures, such as the problem of the Asian Wasp, known to destroy other colonies of hives, as they fight the native bees, often splitting them in two with a brutal stab. Ornamental plants bought in garden centres which spread into the natural fauna, wiping out native species, as has been seen all along the coast line of Torrevieja and Orihuela, overfishing in the Mediterranean, resulting in an increase in jellyfish on the beaches. Because we may chose to ignore the awareness campaigns such as Earth Hour as being nothing more than a whim, but when the effects of our actions start to be seen on a local level, that is when we ought to be more aware of what the experts in all of these cases are telling us. “360 days of sunshine” may well have been an over exaggerated boast of a keen estate agent looking to secure a property deal during the height of the boom, but anybody who lives or frequently visits the area can no doubt see how the climate has changed over recent years. We still get the spring and autumn rainfalls, and we still get hot summers and cold winters, but the effects of global warming is set to be accelerated in this area, according to meteorological experts. The University of Alicante is forefront in warning of how climate change might have a direct effect on this area, in particular in the loss of tourism and the money the sector brings, in view of the fact that “the Mediterranean basin is facing an increasing trend of extreme weather and a loss of comfort climate”. According to Professor of Geography at Alicante, Jorge Olcina, “Tourism is a vulnerable activity that should be adapted”. Olcina is concerned that areas rich in tourism by attracting visitors to the sun and beaches and to snow and city destinations, are “particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the evolution of the weather”, which can lead to a “dramatic change” which will occur within decades, rather than centuries. “Spain is a particularly vulnera-
ble country”, he states, and aside from the diversity of the seasonal destinations for both summer and winter holidays, there is an increase to groups at risk of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, as well as the climate-sensitive, and the aging population being at more risk to the natural trends already established in Spain. Despite the bleak outlook, the future is not yet completely doomed, as there are already numerous global models which are already reversing the trend. According to Olcina, in Australia, for example, the government has been “actively involved in the issue and is developing plans and measures

to mitigate the effects of the change”. In Europe, businesses are adapting their activities to reduce emissions, through initiatives such as “Hotel Energy Solutions”, where the hotel sector is actively looking to reduce their carbon footprint, the sun drenched Canary Islands leading the way in this field. An added factor that Olcina has pointed out is the over exploitation of touristic areas for the last two decades in Spain, largely with a complete ignorance of sustainability, and in areas which are of natural risk, with results in over urbanisation and building being an increase in the risk of flooding or droughts, maritime storms or landslides, all of which
POLICE PROTESTS AT TORREVIEJA PLENARY MEETING

Becoming an almost daily stage of protests, the plaza outside the town hall of Torrevieja saw a group of local police officers and waste disposal and street cleaning workers on Friday, wanting to make their displeasure known to the attendees of the monthly town hall plenary meeting. Around 100 people came together, carrying signs of protest, before entering the town hall to take their place in the public gallery. However, given the num-
ber of people wanting to take an interest in the proceedings this month, there was a delay before the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, entered the session, as everybody had to be seated first. One group of protestors agreed to leave the session before it began in order to ease the pressure on the government team. Both the police and waste workers have pending cases of complaint about working conditions and contracts with the town hall, both of which the unions say are not being resolved.

have seen increases in recent years and even recent months. In fact, according to Oclina, the winter of 2014 has been the windiest in 25 years, largely due to the Atlantic storms which have battered the country. The situation is of “global economic and social importance”, Olcina concludes, but despite there being little political advantage in creating sustainable plans which may be contrary to the economic gains of business and developers, it is crucial for measure to be put in place, especially as climate modelling still has uncertainties in its physical component, such as the behaviour of rainfall.

CLAMPING DOWN ON STREET INCURSIONS
Despite Don Mariano’s closing shortly after Christmas the street furniture has been allowed to remain Throughout the last two summers, Orihuela local police have been criticised, with groups being set up to “Stop police destroying our livelihoods”, and many a complaint that entertainers are being fined and bars shut down, for not complying with the laws relating to entertainment and music. The action however was applauded by many others, tired of the abuse that the noise would create. In Torrevieja, a recent crackdown on the same problem, music and entertainment in bars, has largely gone unchallenged, with many of those who complained about the action in Orihuela even praising the action in Torrevieja. Now, the police in Torrevieja have taken their compliance a step further, and have started issuing fines to bars and restaurants who not only flout the entertainment laws, but also to those violating the bylaws relating to the use of public spaces. The rule prohibits the installation of any windshield, canopy or fixed structure on the road without authorization, irrespective of whether or not the property tax on the extension reflects the work. The officers involved in this latest clamp down on abuses of regulations has seen at least twenty such bars have reports filed against them in a single weekend, although the tariff of fines is not yet clear as the document which relates to the level of finan-
cial penalty is due to be updated. Many are now praising this latest method of legalising business activities in compliance with the law, although some are also now questioning how the situation has managed to evolve, without any kind of compliance monitoring, for at least the last 11 years. If challenged, the officers involved point out that they are working in line with the rules and laws governing the constructions, and urge those being fined to consult with the town hall to see what elements, if any, can be legalised, as the overall aim is to improve the image of the city and ensure that laws are adhered to on the grounds of public safety, as much as the aesthetics. A spokesperson for the Orihuela Costa said that they too are looking at encroachments by bars and restaurants into the street although given the amount of time such investigations appear to be taking there would seem to be no immediate concern that action will be taken any time soon. One of the restaurants identified, Don Mariano’s in Cabo Roig, has been flouting the regulations ever since it opened some years ago but despite the fact that it closed it’s doors shortly after Christmas the street furniture and awning is still illegally occupying a large area of Avd de las Adelfas without any purpose whatsoever, other than causing an inconvenience and danger to local residents and motorists.

LEADER SPAIN GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS BLOCKING ORIHUELA STREET SIGN PROBLEM FINALLY OF ORIHUELA CENSURE MOTION In a surprise twist to proceedings regarding the political January not to proceed with the vote on the motion of censure was in TO BE TACKLED situation in Orihuela, when facing questions in congress no way illegal. The statement to this effect, coming from the governwww.yourlocalnewspaper.info
from Alicante deputy, Herick Campos, the central government of Spain are supporting the decision of the council of Elders, composed of Bob Houliston and Carolina Gracia, in their move that blocked the censure motion tabled by the Partido Popular with the members of CLr. The decision by the central government reflects the move by the council of elders, on account of Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio LópezBas being ineligible to vote in the motion, as they had been expelled from the coalition with which they contested the elections in 2011, the CLR-CLARO group. Speaking to The Leader, Bob Houliston, who faces a legal challenge through the courts in relation to the case, said, “It is obviously good news for me and my fellow Plenary co-President that our action on 3
ment in Madrid carries weight. It is not a surprise in the sense that we knew that we had to act legally and correctly. On the other hand, it does not sit well with the CLR party who accused us of acting out of a spirit of vengeance and retaliation or the Popular Party who said that what we did was the equivalent of a coup d'etat. Despite the Madrid government's statement, the courts in Elche and Orihuela will continue to consider the appeals against our action.” Although the court cases are still pending, this will no doubt be considered a positive position for the government currently composed of the PSOE and Los Verdes, who still continue to try to run the municipality in what they consider to be an open, transparent and fair manner, despite the majority in opposition attempting to prevent many of the proposals aimed at improving the municipality.
ORIHUELA PP WANT TO ARRANGE BOTH SIDES OF THE LAW During this week´s plenary meeting of the Orihuela council, a motion was proposed by the Partido Popular, supported by the CLr, that would give the responsibility for appointing legal representation to the town hall to a sub-committee of council members. The committees are generally formed by representatives of all political groups, chaired by elected members, in principal, as they are numerically the majority members in the town hall, the chairmanship would inevitably be given to members of the PP, or at least their supporters, such as Pedro Mancebo of CLr, responsible for the final decisions that the committee discuss. Therefore, should the situation be permitted, the Partido Popular would decide on the lawyers to represent in any court cases that the town hall faces, which therefore includes court cases in which the PP or CLr have raised against them. The end result being that, for example, in the case where the courts are to investigate the legality of the blocking of the censure motion that could have overthrown the government and returned the PP to power, both the prosecution and defence teams would be appointed by the same side, the PP, with the ruling government having no say in their
own legal representation. Currently, the mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, has appointed legal representation for the case he is defending, but the situation will inevitably lead to yet another legal challenge for Orihuela, as playing a game on both sides would inevitably lead to a win, albeit at the obvious cost to a just and fair hearing.

According to data released this week, there are more than 16,500 street signs missing throughout Orihuela, of which 1,709 are street names and 14,703 are house numbers. According to the councillor who made the statement, Víctor Ruiz, this not only makes it difficult for emergency services, post office workers and friends to find locations, it also potentially constitutes an “electoral offence”, as many international residents are at risk of not receiving their notifications for voting in elections.
In August of last year, we reported how “Information from the census of street names conducted prior to the summer has now been compiled, resulting in the town hall of Orihuela being able to prepare a tender document for replacing and maintaining street signs in the municipality, with immediate attention given to streets with no name, with signs made from durable and theft-proof materials, wherever possible”. The councillor reported how the first audit of street names and signs was conducted in May, 1996, and since then, there has been no major update completed. In 2007, the CLARO group filed a complaint against the town hall, for the alleged offence relating to problems in residents receiving notification of voting, resulting in the National Statistics Institute insisting that the town hall, at the time run by PP party member David Costa, correct the deficiencies, but “nobody did anything about it”. As a result of this conclusion, the town hall has now prepared a tender contract, with a 495,902 euro budget, for the maintenance, updating and renewal of street names, for a period of 4 years, including areas which will contain signs in Braille to assist the visually impaired. Once assigned, the coastal zone and certain surrounding villages, such as Torremendo, where most International residents live, will be given priority before the rest of the municipality is tackled.

HISTORIC LOCAL AREA MAPS NOW ON LINE
nybody with an interest in local history will be excited by the latest development released on the website of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura, as maps and aerial photographs of most of the Torrevieja and Orihuela area have been released, spanning the last 50 years. Residents will also be able to look at the historic documents and see what their home is now built on, as well as how the surrounding area has evolved through the growth of the last half century.
A
At a variety of resolutions, the maps are all now available on an interface similar to Google Earth, but with the added interest of local aerial shots from their archives. In order to view the maps, you need to visit their excellent website, which is at www.chsegura.es/chsic/, and then scroll around to find the location of interest. Once you have found where you want to look at, hover with your mouse over the globe at the top left of the screen. As you are hovering, you should see a menu appear below the globe. Once this is in view, you then need to click on the option named “Mapas base”.
This in turn brings up another menu where you can then click on the appropriate one through history, and see the location change before your eyes. Keep in mind that the site may take a while to load on a slower connection, as the maps are very large and detailed, and not all areas are covered by every map, so you might not see anything at first, but keep trying different maps and it is quite likely you will find something of interest and maybe just the plot of land or a farm where you are now sitting connected to the modern world looking back.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT LIFE IN SPAIN? Via their “Brits Living in Spain” Facebook page, the British Embassy in Madrid is conducting a survey on how the information they provide is of use to immigrants who now live in Spain, in order to assess how they can improve their use of social networks in the future.
The quick and anonymous survey, available direct at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Integrometer, asks 18 simple questions on how you feel about life in Spain, and how you integrate into Spanish life and culture. The final question asks for an adjective that describes your life in Spain, and based on more than 1,200 respondents so far, it would appear that the general consensus is that life in Spain is happy, content, relaxed, sunny, interesting, fantastic, wonderful, peaceful and perfect, but they are just the most used terms. If you have an opinion, although it is intended to be light hearted, you can both visit their Facebook page, by searching for “Brits Living in Spain”, or click direct to the survey and express your own opinion on life in Spain. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Integrometer
UK BUDGET 2014 What does this mean to you? vate pension and most QROPS n (150% of GAD as income as opposed to 120% before the budget). You can also cash in smaller UK private pensions if you are 60 or over and they total £30,000 or under. The main proposed change is that if you have a UK private pension from April 2015 you can en-cash the lot, obviously the UK government hasn´t done this out of the goodness of their heart, they must be hoping to get something in return.
o did it make you happy when you heard the news that the UK Government's budget proposals will allow for full encashment of private UK pensions at age 55 from April 2015?

What's in it for the UK government? Assuming encashment is taken, HMRC will collect: After the 25% tax free cash lump sum is taken, they will tax the remainder at 20%, 40% or even 45% depending on the individual's income tax bands. Tax on any growth or income of reinvested monies depending on the investment structure used 21% VAT on any purchases made with the released funds. The UK government expect to make an additional £3billion from taxing people who en-cash their pensions.
What does the budget mean for you? British Ex-pats Pre 2014 Budget - those who had resided outside the UK for a full five tax years were entitled to move their pensions to a HMRC approved Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). Amongst the benefits of a transfer were that your fund would fall outside the remit for UK Inheritance Tax (IHT) and therefore the entire pension pot could be transferred to your heirs without deduction of any IHT or the aforementioned 55% charges. BUSY WEEK FOR THE POLICE IN ORIHUELA The children of Orihuela have been getting firsthand experience of the police, with activities aimed at encouraging their safety, as well as introducing them to some of valuable work of these custodians of society. A cycle training park was set up on the Orihuela Costa, enabling officers to assist in cycle proficiency training, as well as crucial road safety advice when out and about. In addition, as part of an initiative to bring the emergency services to a more accessible level, the children have been able to excitedly examine and investigate a variety of police vehicles, whilst also undergoing talks on safety and advice. In the picture, one such visit, along with the Protección Civil, took place at the local school of Rabaloche.
place across the entire area, restricting times that domestic and industrial fires can take place. Final confirmed figures reveal that 105 people took part in the guided walk of the Orihuela Costa last week, during which they were given a wealth of knowledge about the flora, water quality and its attractions such as Cabo Roig, the beaches and dunes, along the 9 kilometre route, which passed through 8 beaches. The walk lasted for three hours, with a short break in Cabo Roig, and was attended by residents of Orihuela as well as visitors from Cartagena, Murcia, Callosa, Torrevieja and other municipalities in the region, all of a variety of nationalities. A visit and presentation will take place on Thursday of this week, recognising the work of the municipal teams that have been carrying out repairs to the Pinada de Campoamor. In an initiative launched by the councillor for Employment, Manuel Gallud, some 85 previously unemployed workers of the municipality have been given a six month temporary contract of employment, during which time they also learn new skills, both of a practical nature, and in the classroom, to assist them in finding permanent work in the future. At Campoamor, a small group has been clearing the forest areas and making picnic tables on site, which will be of benefit to the entire area, both in aesthetic and practical terms. The team will be applauded for their work by the councillor, accompanied by the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer.
A forest fire, thought to have been caused by the explosion of an electrical transformer, destroyed around a hectare of shrub land in Orihuela, near to a road tunnel on the N-340 road, as fire fighters battled increasingly strong winds as they tried to bring the blaze under control. The local police, fire service and the provincial fire fighters were all involved in the blaze, with helicopters dropping water onto the scene, in an attempt to prevent the further spread of the flames. The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation to try to find the exact cause of the incident. Meanwhile, an emergency protocol was put in
The government team of Orihuela has approved 51 grants to be awarded by the Department of Social Welfare, with a total value of 10,356.57 euro, which will go to help families of the municipality who are struggling through the financial crisis. An additional 12,000 euro was also approved towards water bills during 2014. Orihuela town hall is facing yet another historic debt, this time to clear a payment plan agreed for the period between 2006 and 2009, when a previous administration agreed to pay for parking spaces in a public car park for judges and prosecutors at the city´s courts. The town hall had agreed a monthly payment plan for the spaces in the car park operated by the company, Doalco, but stopped paying the monthly installments. Now, a judge who considered the claim by the company seek-
ing payment has ruled that the town hall must pay the outstanding 65,925 euro bill, from the public funds. At the time of the agreement, Orihuela was run by the Partido Popular Mayor José Manuel Medina. The agreement was made on account of the car park at the plaza de Santa Lucía having insufficient spaces. The matter had been investigated by the anti-corruption prosecutor following a petition filed by opposition members who considered that this payment was improper by the council and not within its powers.
The public car park operated by Doalco Around twenty police officers from Orihuela have joined colleagues from around the area, including dog handlers, Guardia Civil officers and others, on a training course which dealt with various aspects of front-line policing, such as entering premises, crowd control, drug detection and reactive shooting. The course is part of an on-going training program, which the Mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén who also holds the competency of management of public safety, described as “important for any professional, but much more in the case of those who have to ensure the lives of others”. Guillén thanked the coordinators of the course and noted that such personal development plans are not only “good for the agents themselves, but important to the rest of society”.

GETTING THE BEACHES REA DY FOR EASTER
The Councillor for the Environment and Beaches in Torrevieja, Francisco Moreno has said that municipal maintenance crews are finalizing the maintenance work in preparation for the influx of visitors anticipated over the Easter holiday period. He said that several tasks have been carried out during the past few weeks including the overhaul of the pumping stations which provide the water supply for the footbaths. They have been thoroughly cleaned, had their filters replaced as well as a general review of all electronically controlled equipment. Those footbaths deemed to be in need of replacement have all been changed. Fencing and railings have also been repaired and repainted along the beaches of El Cura and Los Locos. On La Mata beach his staff are repairing the pedestrian path by replacing the broken wood panelling. Once renewed the supporting base will be replaced with new wood. However, despite these aesthetic improvements, the provision of services in both Torrevieja and Orihuela is not going quite as smoothly as might be hoped. In Torrevieja, there will be no life guards on the beaches for the second consecutive year, due to a reduction in the budget allocated to provide this life saving service, with the allocated 700,000 euro of previous years being reduced to 500,000, thus giving focus on the summer months only. In Orihuela, the beaches there will have life guards for Easter, but do to the private company contract-
ed to the municipality facing bankruptcy, they have resigned from the contract, once their Easter commitment has been fulfilled. Although this means that there is currently no provision for the summer, the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, explains that it will mean that the contract can be rewritten before being put to tender, eliminating some of the erroneous and problematic clauses currently in force. The contract for the chiringuito beach bars has already been put to public tender in Torrevieja, a process which also had to be amended, due to corrections being made to the terms of the provision, but this appears to be progressing now, meaning despite the bathers of Torrevieja not having anybody on hand to save their life, should they get into difficulty, they will at least be able to enjoy a drink and a snack. The story is also reversed in Orihuela at the moment, with the tender process there becoming almost paralysed, due to complaints raised about the contract requiring the bidders to be accredited with quality standards. The arguments surround allegations that whilst attempting to fulfil the criteria of the standards required for the beaches to remain of the highest quality possible, this restricts the number of companies who can bid, and is potentially tantamount to creating unfair competition. With Easter falling so late this year, and the end of April to early March period being notoriously bad in terms of rainfall, there is of course the chance that nobody will consider going to the beach whilst they are taking a break in either Torrevieja or Orihuela, waiting until the hot summer months.

JOSE REALLY CAN DO IT! I am writing in order to let people know about an experience that my husband and I had recently. We are a retired English couple and have lived in La Marina for 8 years now. Like many other Brits who have been buying over the last 9 years we have paid exorbitant prices for our homes that now sell for much less. Today, due to the devaluation of the Pound compared to 9 years ago, our pensions have gone down and our purchasing power is much less. After 9 years, a home needs certain maintenance and more so if it was already a re-sale. My husband and I wanted to make a few alterations to our villa such as putting up new awnings and closing in the front terrace to make a conservatory. For us it was very important to engage a company that was fully legal and with a good reputation, but above all we were looking for a human touch that would give us confidence in the firm. After requesting several quotes, we asked a neighbour who had recently had some awnings installed and she told us that they had all been done by "José the window grille man". She said that José was a very honest man and legally registered and that any time she needed something José would fix it whether it be an awning, a security grille, electric wáter heater, a window, etc. Trusting in his work and in my neighbour´s recommendation I called José, who speaks perfect English. José, from the first moment gave us confidence that he would do the job and offered us money saving ideas. In two days he presented the estimate and explained step by step the installation process for the awnings and the glass curtains for the front terrace. His

For us the quality and product guarantee was very important as we did not want to pay twice as much only to get something inferior. Following the installation of the awnings and glass curtains and seeing how professional it all was we wanted to share this information with our fellow ex-pats and publicly give our thanks to José. MULTI-MILLION MAYORAL LAND SOLD FOR A FIFTH OF PRICE ne of the pending court cases against the former Mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, revolves around the fact that in the year 2000, he seized farm land in the Almoradí area, which he paid 180,000 euro for. His claim was that he intended to use the plot for exercising his dogs, amongst other activities.
O
The allegations of wrong doing came about after Pedro Hernández sold the land just 2 year later, at a price of 5.4 million euro, the accusations being that he profiteered from insider knowledge and the ability to adjust the classification of the land to allow residential building, thus increasing the value. Now, the company who purchased the land from the Mayor, Edén del Mar, has themselves sold the plot, although they have only managed to sell the 20 hectares of land for around a fifth of what they paid for it, taking just 1.1 million euro. There is no doubt that the value of both land and property has dropped considerably since the housing boom that saw areas like Torrevieja flourish, but the differences in this particular case are seen as a significant development, considering the legal proceedings which surround the possibility of a once highly respected figurehead of politics, who has already been found guilty in one criminal case, yet still walks free pending an appeal, may well add to the burden of the evidence presented when this matter is dealt with by the courts

TORREVIEJA MAKES HISTORY IN BRUSSELS he Havana was heard at the Headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels last week, the very first time ever, on the occasion of the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony of Torrevieja The ceremony took place in front of a large number of Spanish MEPs, Pilar del Castillo, who was a former Spanish Minister of Education, Culture and the Director of the Cervantes Institute in Brussels, María González Encinar The event went along similar lines to that held at the headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid a week earlier where the guests heard a short concert “In times of Havana”, sung, under the direction of conductor and composer, Aurelio Martínez López, by representatives from a number of Torrevieja’s choirs.
T
Oriolana MEP Eva Ortiz, who has been one of the main promoters of this major event, served as host to the salt delegation led by Mayor Eduardo Dolon and Councillor for Culture and deputy Director of Habaneras, Luis María Pizana. The director of the Cervantes Institute in Brussels, Maria Gonzalez Encinar said at the end of the performance that he had the "very great satisfaction of attendingthe event and that it was now the time to promote the competition worldwide. " At the conclusion of the performance the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, presented a number of Literary works and musical scores relating to the history of the competition. He then met several students studying Spanish who showed interest in learning more about the Havana after being impressed by the quality of the production.
NO TRAINS OR TOILETS FOR TORREVIEJA ccording to data presented in Brussels this week, Torrevieja City Council estimates that there are over 20,000 potential users for a bus shuttle service between the city and the AVE high speed train network at Villena. The figure is as a result of a study by the government, aimed at proving the profitability of the service. However, despite a previous announcement of its pending launch, even announcing tickets going on sale in time for the FITUR tourism festival, the Mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón, has now admitted that there is still no final agreement as to when the service might operate, and so there is no specific date for launch. In a more recent statement, the train operator, RENFE, also denied any plans for the service had been made. For their part, Dolón argues that his government will continue to work to try to get it started “as soon as possible”. Meanwhile, the Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja have criticised
A
renovation plans for the bus station at the Eras de la Sal, as they say that the project does not include toilet facilities. To date, passengers frequently use near-by bars and restaurants, as do a number of drivers prior to their next route of work, which the group feel although is inconvenient so far, it could easily be resolved in the plans to carry out the development. The situation has been a matter of complaint for a number of years, with the Ombudsman even being presented with the complaint. The situation would become unbearable should the train link bus ever become a reality, but the residents and bus drivers state that their complaints have gone unanswered all this time. Meanwhile, the Costa Azul bus company has requested permission for them to place a portaloo at the bus station, so at least their drivers can relieve themselves before embarking on a journey in discomfort, and with potentially dangerous feelings.

NEW PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS OVER THE N332 The new pedestrian crossing bridge over the N332 at Cabo Roig has recently been completed. Although any additional crossing points over the N332 in Orihuela Costa is to be welcomed one can not fail to question why it was decided that the area most in need of a new crossing over this very busy road was Cabo Roig which is already far better served with crossing points than any other sections of the road. Cabo Roig is already far better served with crossing points than many other sections of the road
There is little debate amongst the residents of Orihuela Costa that the very busy N332 effectively cuts off the beaches and the sea front from the large and numerous urbanisations that lie inland. The widening of the N332 made access to the beaches even more difficult for the majority of people especially as there are so few places to cross the road. In the interest of road safety many sections of the road have metal barriers erected along the center of the road to discourage reckless people from crossing the road in clearly dangerous places. Whilst the widening of the N332 has made things far easier for the motorist it has failed to address the needs of large sections of the pop-

OVER 300 CHILDREN TRAVELING WITHOUT SEAT BELTS During the first week of March 318 children under the ages of twelve were caught travelling in a vehicle without using any type of restraint and amazingly 83 of them were occupying front seats. This statistic is of particular concern within the Directorate General of Traffic, since one of the objectives of the Road Safety Strategy approved by the Government for the years 2011-2020 is to ensure that no child loses their life because they were not sitting in a proper chair according to their weight and height. Because this has been uppermost in the minds of the DGT, quite rightly it is one of the main aspects included in the recent Reform of the Rules of the Road This figure was recorded as part of the results of the campaign currently being applied by Traffico monitoring the use of seat belts and child restraint systems. It shows that awareness campaigns like this are still needed. From the 428,596 vehicles stopped during the campaign 5,372 offenses were recorded amongst drivers or passengers who did not use the regulatory seat belt restraint, 3,269 drivers and 1,785 passengers, of whom 1058 were travelling in the front and 727 seats in the rear. The current fine if you are caught is 200 euros but the money is not important as it is your live and the lives of your passengers that you are putting at risk.

CONTROL CONFIRMED FOR ALICANTE-ELCHE AIRPOR T
The councillor for transport in the municipality of Elche, Justino Delgado, has confirmed that a barrier will be placed over the access road into Alicante-Elche airport, to help prevent unlicensed, pirate taxis and those from outside the area, from accessing the location.
The barrier system will automatically collect number plate information of all vehicles entering, collecting the data into a system that will monitor the frequency of visits and take appropriate action. Licensed taxis from outside the area will face restrictions as to the number of times they visit, as well as taking legal action against unlicensed taxis, or private vehicles which frequent the area more than would be considered normal. Currently, the taxi drivers and authorities are aware of around 40 taxis from outside Elche who make around 6 trips per day. In addition, they are also aware of 80 private vehicles known to
be frequently picking up or dropping off different passengers on a regular basis. The officially licensed taxis of Elche can only ever manage up to 4 trips per day, which is seen as a gross injustice considering the time, training and expense they have to go through to secure their legal and insured operation. As the barrier system monitors access, it will automatically keep a tally of vehicle movements, and will automatically shut down and block access to offending vehicles known to have been too frequent a visitor. In addition to the barrier system, Delgado has stated that the local police will intensify checks, both at the airport and the surrounding area, and have been given the task of monitoring pirate and outsider vehicles “as a priority”. The barrier will be installed at the airport in the coming months.

IPAD TO SAVE ON IBERIA FUEL BILL
Having just agreed a 14% minimum pay cut, pilots flying for Spanish airline Iberia have received an unexpected bonus, as they will no longer have to carry round copious amounts of paper in the form of flight manuals. The Company has just approved the use of iPads in the cockpits of some of their aircraft, meaning that pilots will now be able to use an “electronic flight bag”, manuals, documents and instructions carried on their tablet computers. However, it´s not just the heavy burden on the staff that will be reduced by the move, as the airline estimate that by replacing paper with iPads will reduce the weight of each flight by around 60 kilos, the average weight of an adult woman. Therefore, the weight of the aircraft load is reduced, as is the fuel consumption, resulting in an estimated financial saving of around 150,000 euro per year on short and medium distance flights. There are obvious operational benefits too, as pilots will be able to look up data faster than flicking through the manuals, resulting in a quicker and more efficient response in the cockpit. It is expected that the system will be rolled out gradually to the entire fleet, in the fullness of time. So far, more than 100 pilots have received the formal training on how to use the features offered by the iPad.
CONFUSION IN THE CANARIES OVER POSSIBLE CRASHED PLANE to the sighting, immediately adopting their rehearsed protocol to deal Boeing, please confirm”.
Spanish emergency services were thrown into a full scale alert on Thursday, when a passenger jet crashed into the sea off the coast of Gran Canaria, and was seen floating along the horizon in a scene reminiscent of the famous water landing on the Hudson River. However, although looking at the pictures it was easy to see why, the incident was not as dramatic, as the teams of rescuers sprung into action, as it was nothing more than a floating crane being towed along the water. The emergency coordination centre received numerous calls relating
with such incidents. Whereas the emergency crews can only be applauded for their prompt action, it later transpired that the situation was exaggerated, as the initiating call reporting the aircraft ditching in the sea came from the airport itself. The desperate plea that launched the response came from the airport controllers, reporting a “Boeing 737 in the water off the coast of Jinámar and is floating, repeat is floating, it has not sunk. Please mobilize all available means”. The 112 emergency centre relays the call, “Gran Canaria Airport, a
And the dreaded response from the airport, “Affirmative Boeing 737 floating. Not sunk. Mobilize all available means, please....." The conversation ends with emergency coordinator relaying the chilling response, “I confirm Airport: all resources are going to the area”. For its part, the airport authority, AENA, confirms that it acted according to the safety protocol, and that the airport fulfilled its actions by doing “what had to be done”, explaining that in the reporting of any potential impact, speed is vital, as is the immediate activation of the emergency response teams, along with search and rescue.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
The Abandoned Ex pat When planning a new life abroad, many expats forget to seriously consider the implications of disability, advancing age, serious illness and death of a partner later in their lives. These are all issues that readers often tell me about and many realise too late that their new life in the sun has turned into a living nightmare. One of the issues is due to cultural differences; for example, in most Mediterranean countries, it is the cultural norm for the old and sick to be cared for by their own family members, unlike in the UK and Scandinavia, where many of the elderly spend the latter stages of their lives in sheltered accommodation or in residential care. As a result, there are few residential homes available for expats in countries such as Spain and Portugal, and sudden illness and changes in other circumstances may mean that it is too late to return to the UK for the necessary care. End of life care is also another area to consider, since many countries are unable to offer the comprehensive range of services and support that are available in the UK. For instance, in the Canary Islands, there are no hospices or Macmillan nurses to care for the dying. I recall one recent and very sad case, where one British family abandoned their elderly mother in a local hospital, because they claimed that they could no longer cope with her. The old lady was living in a
retirement home in the UK before her son took her to Spain in a bid to save the remaining part of the family estate from the cost of residential care. After a few months in Spain, the old lady was abandoned at a local hospital. On arrival at hospital she was found to be dehydrated, malnourished, yet fully aware of what was going on, as she had no serious health problems. The elderly woman was discharged from the hospital five days later and an ambulance returned her to her son’s home. The son wanted nothing more to do with her and sent her back to the hospital. The hospital returned the old lady to her son’s home a second time, but this time accompanied by the police, who handed the son a denuncia (a police report), but the son still refused to accept any responsibility for her. The son was then summoned to court, for which he failed to appear and subsequently he left the area with his family, but without his mother and could not be traced. The old lady, although mentally sound, had a stomach condition and could not live alone as she required a strict diet and regular, supervised medication.
It was left to the courts to decide what to do with the old lady, with the option of either placing her in one of the few care homes in Spain, at the expense of the State, or returning her to the UK where she would be with people who could speak the same language. Although hard to believe, I understand that hospitals report that this situation is becoming quite common and worsens during holiday periods. We often hear of heart-breaking stories of dogs being abandoned during the summer holidays, but abandoning an elderly person overseas takes cruelty to an entirely new level. APPLE IS THE PREFERRED CHOICE FOR SPANISH MEN According to a survey by the “world's leading married dating service for discreet encounters” website, AshleyMadison.com, when it comes to choosing a mobile phone, Spanish men prefer Apple, whereas the women prefer Samsung. The survey was conducted through their global network of sites, in which 75,000 users from 26 countries were asked about their technological preferences, revealing that Spain is in a unique position, as the usual choice of phone is generally the opposite, with women preferring Apple and men opting for Samsung. Of the respondents from Spain, 24% of women chose the South Korean brand Samsung, and only 17% opted for apple. For the men, the figure was 22% preferring Apple, and 18% choosing Samsung. LG, Nokia and BlackBerry were the next preferred options, coming in relatively close in both men and women. Perhaps inevitable for a dating site, the survey also asked about the activities that phone owners get up to, with 40% of Spanish respondents saying that they have “hot conversations” with a partner several times a day, whereas 36% do so once per day.
Whilst at work, 24% of Spanish men are also happy to take a break from the routine in order to chat with their lovers, although the average from all countries was 43%, seemingly indicating the Spanish man´s preference to work over play. As for Spanish women, 32% would take a break from work for a conversation with a lover, a figure consistent with the results obtained in other countries. As phones become more useful tools for doing far more than just talking, 80% of the men say that they have taken photographs or videos with their lover on their mobile, a figure which plummets to just 10% when asked about photographing the wife, the same number who also took “selfies”. The statistics for women was equally dramatically spaced, with 72% taking photos or video with a lover, just 7% with the husband, but 25% take pictures of themselves. In connection with the findings, American sexologist Eric Anderson said, “This study shows that technology has helped us explore and enjoy our sexuality issues that until recently were taboo. From sexting practice to scheduling an appointment, mobiles are a new way to get sexual satisfaction”.
THE PITFALLS OF PLUS SIZE SHOPPING. earn the trade secrets at our Curvy Lady Fashion Show Saturday 5th April Instore. When you are a plus size, which can be anything from a size 16/42, clothes shopping can be a nightmare. All sorts of factors have to be taken into account, it does not stop with "does it fit me?", it also has to incorporate "does it hide my fat bits, does it accentuate my slim bits, is it long enough, does it have sleeves and does my bum look big in it??" I cannot ever imagine Kate Moss or any other slim woman having to ask all these questions, they seem to have a huge choice available and to slip easily into whatever takes their fancy, none of the extra rules apply to them making shopping so much easier. So many plus size women settle for what fits them instead of what they actually like. I have spent over 12 years shopping for plus size ladies, within Looking Good Boutique we have always had a dedicated Plus Size Department and I have learned a lot by listening to my customers. Elegance, style and fashion are not exclusively for small people, larger ladies also want to be up to date and stylish, they do not have to put up with over sized tents, bright and garish patterns and fab-
L
rics that do not flatter. Understanding how women feel is so important when designing for plus sizes, larger ladies want to look sexy and be able to feel confident in what they are wearing, just taking a size 12 garment and increasing the size does not work, other really important factors need to be considered. Learning a few golden rules when it comes to enhancing your shape can be really useful. I have found some great plus size suppliers, that I feel really understand their market, they are not all well known names, one of the best is a small family company from Germany called Chalou, we are the only stockist in this area for the best in current collections which include the most amazing capri pants and bermudas in fantastic stretch fabrics and an elasticated waist in sizes from 14/40 to 28/54, we have sold them for almost 13 years and know how fantastic they are for both value and style. There is no compromise to be made with this supplier as they understand the fit and comfort needed by larger ladies. Joseph Ribkoff also have some amazing plus sizes available in their collection, you can see them in my boutique up to size 22/48 and they really are the height of elegance and style, all in stretch fabrics that shape rather than cling and ranging from shaper trousers to elegant evening tops.
My French designers are not left out, they both have beautiful and chic collections for ladies with curves. Didier Parakian have a collection called Anathea for ladies up to size 26/52 which still retains all that is French chic, beautiful fabrics and elegant lines. Pause Cafe are not left behind, they have a younger and more on trend collection with use of multi layering and great fabric mixes. When you are shopping it is easy to become disheartened, it seems that there is nothing for you in every shop, even trying on is an ordeal. Come to a boutique where you can expect a superior level of customer service and a personal shopper who
understands and listens to you. Making good choices and investing in some must have basics gives you the platform to add to a wardrobe that makes you feel good, shining with confidence, elegant and feminine as all women should. When you learn to love your curves and embrace your shape you can look amazing every day. To Celebrate our lovely ladies with curves we are hosting a CURVY LADY FASHION SHOW here instore on Saturday 5th April at 12 noon. Reserve your seat and learn how to enhance your curves with a few trade secrets.

MP3 PLAYERS CAN CAUSE HEARING LOSS According to an editorial in the British Medical Journal “Listening to MP3 players at high volume increases the risk of deafness in later life. It said earphones that fit into the ear canal can intensify music volume, which can reach over 120 decibels, the same level of noise as a jet engine. This review indicates that, although there is little direct evidence that personal music players cause hearing loss, there is cause for concern. The use of MP3 players has risen dramatically in recent years, and it seems reasonable to assume that playing music at high volume through earphones placed directly in the ear canal may damage hearing. Further studies are needed to clarify the risk to hearing from listening to MP3 players, with the aim of developing evidence-based guidelines for safe usage and volume limits.

Back in Liverpool, Ade boards a three-masted topsail schooner, the Kathleen and May, a type which used to ply the Atlantic and learns about sea shanties from Scouser Hughie Jones. The future of rugby looks very bright in the area of San Javier with the female team winning their league and their male counterparts still in strong contention to win promotion from the Second Division
into the first Division. Next season will also see the formation of an U-18 team, with interest ever increasing and numbers now up to 22 youth team players. CARP-R-US FISHING NEWS
This weeks match, Round 5 of the Spring series was fished on the Eden stretch of the River Segura in Guardamar. The weather was kind to us and the wind had dropped to a gentle breeze. But once again the fishing was very spasmodic. In first place was Andy Foden using the feeder. Second was Dennis Pick on the pole. Geoff Tempest was third and John Brightling fourth. Next weeks match should be on the River Segura in Murcia, but I am still waiting for the Federation and Medio Ambiente to get
back to me concerning this. Please see the Club website for further information. The next club meeting is on 6th April, with the Committee at 10.30 followed by the General Meeting at 11.00. The next Quiz night is Tuesday 8th April starting at 7.30. The cost is 1€ per person and teams of 6 or less can take part. The Clubs home is the Bar El Alto La Dolores which can be found just off the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar. For information please telephone 966 717 923 or visit the website www.carprus.net

180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams, Paul Durrant x3, Lee Maiden x3 (Meerkats), Sid Cross x4 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters), Mike Smith, Mel Dawson (Breakaways Bears) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 Shortest leg: 14 darts Lee Maiden, Meerkats Game of the week was the Meerkats v. Hattons Hunks. Back in November the Kats enjoyed a comfortable 4-8 victory, but not this time. In good voice and form they led the champions elect 3 times and were actually playing for the match and points in a last leg decider. Fantastic game! Hyenas came away from the Pint Depot with both points and keep the pressure on Que Pasa for second place. They however play the Kats this week and although captain Simon Williams would never stoop so low as bribery, his opposite number Derek Kingsbury has been unavailable to answer any of the numerous calls Williams has made to discuss the match. What can he want to talk about? Kats also have to play Que Pasa in the penultimate game of the season, so if the Kats lose both matches it will be a wobbly finale to the season for the current league leaders. Porterhouse will be hoping to maintain their 5th spot until May, but have a more difficult run in than the Hunks who have slipped 2 points behind this week even after their stunning performance to the Kats. But guess what, Porterhouse entertain the Hunks on April 17th in a ¨4 pointer¨. All to play for. Back to the game of the week. The Hunks were definitely not on volume control as they warmed up for the start. Earlier banter turned into outlandish but friendly predictions with Joe Hawkins and Alex Nikolov in the thick of it. The match kicked off with the team game, often a mundane warm up, not this one, Pat Abrams 100, Paul Durrant 140, Derek Kingsbury 100 and John Eyre 100 saw to that, but two 133s from Hawkins and Kenny Wilkinson somehow gave the Hunks first opportunity at D20 which they failed to convert, leaving Eyre 2 darts to complete the 1001 on S15,D16. Abrams scored two more tons in the second and looking likely to go 2 up. The Kats hadnot reckoned on recently landed from the UK, perma-tanned and ideal ladies man Rod ¨superhunk¨ Buller who weighed in with a ton of his own and D16 to level, the roar was probably heard at La Zenia. Hawkins 140 and Wilkinson D2 kept the momentum going, despite a ton from Durrant. Abrams 100 and D8 made it 2 apiece, with partner Nikolov. Sid Cross and Wilkinson faced Graham Todd and Durrant in the second doubles and it turned out to be the second time the visitors held the lead. Cross hit 98 and a ton, his partner hitting 90 to set up D12. Durrant´s 135 and 85 weren´t enough to prevent the cockney Cross from scoring the 24 points required second dart. Eyre 100,D15 and
Kingsbury got the better of Buller and Keith King, the latter somehow finding form to hit 2 treble 20s, leaving D20 with one dart still in his hand. His narrow subsequent miss was followed by Eyre´s D15. 3 all and a close game anticipated, Abrams went on first to face Steph Simpson and after a ton calmly slotted home 74 (S14,S20,D20) to gain a slender lead. Durrant had the throw against Hawkins, both scoring tentatively until the former hit a 180 to open a commanding lead. It seemed an age before the leg was completed on D2 for the Kats to go 2 in front. The former champions rarely drop a point from this position and had certainly not counted on the Hunks resilience. Cross 100,D20, superhunk Buller 100,D5 and Wilkinson D5 reeled off the next three to lead 5-6 with just the one leg remaining, back to back 180 man Lee Maiden with the throw v. George Mint. The supporting noise for Mint was deafening, the Kats very subdued but supportive for their man. It was Maiden coming out on top with 2x100 and D10 by a Kats whisker from the defiant Mint. The Kats scored a respectable 15 tons or more, the Hunks reply of 8 makes it look a little one sided, far from that, a tremendous performance from both sides particularly Stewart McCulloch´s Hunks. The Eagles from Que Pasa maintain their 3 point advantage over the Hyenas after an excellent away victory to the Pirates of PB´s. The visitors polished off the first two legs courtesy of Eddie Klimonis 125 and Stuart Clark D6 in the first, Klimonis D2 in the second. Some impressive scoring in the third from John Walker 81,100,100 with Joe Cuyt and Kevin Wood supporting should have been enough for a 0-3 lead, but dogged determination and a little luck enabled the Pirates trio of Michelle Lane, Terry Kirby and Mika Oksanom to complete the 701 courtesy of the latter on D10. Captain Den Hall 103 paired with Klimonis in the first doubles and dumped Barry Weston and Brian Mears with some showboating from Klimonis D16,D8 after a fine ton. Clark added a further leg with a super effort completing 64 (S8,S16,D20) and then Walker opened his shoulders in the remaining pair hitting 140,100,D8 against the unfortunate girls Lane and Oksanom. At 1-5 up the Eagles rested Walker and reeled off the next four singles, Cuyt 100 winning the match for Pasa. Some poor finishing from the visitors wasn’t capitalised on except Pirate of the night Jan Weston who completed her 501 on D14 against a stunned Jim Waddell. Clark had a decent leg against Michelle Lane finishing on S20,D16 his third double of the night, along with a ton. Chief Eagle Brett Badlove commented ¨a wins a win but the finishing was painful, the team need to relax at our next soul and motown evening this coming Friday¨. Pint Depot Queens collapsed against fourth placed Busters returning from Playa Flamenca without a single leg. Queen Lorraine Cox had trouble finding her abacus prior to the match and paid the price by celebrating her supposed victory finishing a creditable 78, unfortunately she only needed 76, oops! Poor old Major Royal Debbie Wright is still sidelined with cortisone injections into a painful shoulder condition, but keeping tight lipped on how she sustained the problem. Mind you, she has enough on her plate after opening a new Euronics showroom in Quesada. We wish her well on her recent expansion and understand some excellent Spring deals are available in both showrooms. Back to the match and some impressive scoring from three of the Busters Ray Harvey 100,125 and Paul Dowinton 100,121 were both eclipsed by the popular Mark Filer who whacked in 3x100 and a 140. The Hyenas enjoyed a full complement of players for selection this week. Cyril Harrison returning from the UK and Joe Miller now available gave captain Simons Williams the advantage all captains dream for of who to select and who to rest. He couldn’t have expected the resulting score line, which leaves the Kings only one point ahead of the Tavern in the chase to the League Plate. Some good overall performances from the Pint Depot boys, didn’t however convert into winning legs and they will be disappointed after several missed opportunities. Gary Minor and Ian Sleath were solid in the first leg, but it was Miller 81,100 and D3 who opened the scoring. Miller again figured in the next with steady scoring 60,60,140 assisted by Lee Holtham 81,100 and Williams pegging out for 0-2. Minor took the third on D3, Shaun Smith 100 and Harrison contributing. A nice performance from Matt Cummins 83,85,140 wasn’t enough as Holtham 81,100,60 and Smith D9 took the first doubles. Martyn Bynorth and Minor got the better of Williams and Geoff Harvey 120, Minor slot-
ting home D13 for 2-3. Harrison D2 wrapped up the last leg before the break for the visitors. Holtham D4, Smith D7 and Harrison D10 gave the Hyenas the match, although Bynorth 111, was unlucky not to save the game. Minor couldn’t improve on his earlier two winning legs and went down to Miller on D10. A flurry of good scores from Eddie Fozzard, 81,100 and Jim Underwood 85,117 resulted in yet another leg for the Hyenas on D20 leaving just the 12th leg between Cummins and Harvey. Yet another good performance from the Kings, Cummins returning 134 and the Hyenas countering with 81 and 100 to leave D7, converted in two for a comfortable but slightly flattering result. Another solid performance from the Porters against Sonya Cooper´s Misfits, who has just returned from a gambling and sky diving jaunt in Las Vegas. Her companions on the trip, who shall remain nameless, were nowhere to be seen presumably spending their winnings somewhere exotic. Mike Newberry opened up the scoring in the first with a ton, Peter Ayres 95 and Ray Hayes closing the leg on D4 despite some heavy scoring from Karl Cooper. Porters continued their pounding of the T20 with Hayes 121 and Ayres 120 plus a D16 for the second. Leah Chesworth 114 topped scored in the next for Madigans, but it was captain Ray Sanderson D4 who finished the 701. Hayes continued his form with a ton in the fourth only for Ron Young to complete the 601 on 48 (D16,D8). Yvonne Rouffignac 100 and D4 made it 4-1 with partner Sue Sanderson. Ayres recorded a further ton with captain Ray, to no avail, as George Caine pulled one back with a tidy 54 out (S8,S10,D18) for 4-2. Hayes hit his second double of the night on D2 to extend the Porters to lead to 3. A nice leg from Young followed, the Misfit scoring 85,85 and D5 to rein back the hosts. Newberry ensured at least a point on D20 against a spirited Cooper performance. Ayres made sure of both points with some excellent throwing 135,117 and D2 taking out Caine who was in sight of a finish. Chesworth faced captain Ray in the fifth single with advantage of throw and certainly made it count hitting 112 and 117. Unfortunately the skipper was in similar mood and hit 95 and 100 before closing the leg on 48 (S8,D20). The better looking Sanderson played her usual role as last player to face the gambling Cooper. The former recorded a 118 but when the chips are down Cooper showed how it should be done gaining the Misfits 4th leg on D6. Gogarty´s consolidated their mid table position, winning their away match to the Honeys of Hattons. The first leg was pretty lively, both sides scoring heavily with John Linton closing out the leg to go 1 up. Simone de Lacey levelled on D4. John Linton upped the scoring in the third with 85,132, Phil de Lacey replying with 80,81 and Maureen Naylor 121. Steve Woods however got the finishing double 3 after he had contributed 81 and 95. Ms. de Lacey squared the match only for Gogarty´s to take the next two via Richard Patterson and Woods. Brian Newton making an invaluable contribution with 81,83,100 in the last pair. Naylor acquitted herself admirably in the first single scoring 100,70 and 132 but couldn’t prevent Linton going out on D10 for 2-5. Kevin Procktor ensured at least a draw on S16,D20 and then Mr. de Lacey gave the Honeys some hope with a steady scoring leg finishing on S17,D20. Newton gained the 7th match winning leg on D2. The La Zenia Tool Hire Mens Singles and Alex Nikolov Building Services Ladies Singles draw and venues are being distributed this week. First round play is on April 10th. QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Quesada has ended the year on a high, winning the prestigious Winter League trophy, and also, winning for the third time in succession the Berleen Trophy. The presentation of both trophies was made at Monte Mar, following our last game on Wednesday by League Co-ordinator Colin Armitage. This has been a very successful year for the club where we have won a succession of trophies, including two Spanish National Titles. Well done to our SABA Pearls team in taking second place in the A division. Well done too to our two Southern League teams, the Swallows and the Swifts who have both won promotion with their Runners-up positions in their respective leagues. Last weekend saw the final of our club championships and congratulations must go to Lisa Bonsor who has achieved, what we believe to be a first, in winning all five of the Champion of Champion disciplines, Ladies singles, Ladies Pairs, Mixed Pairs, Mixed Triples and Mixed Rinks. SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB By Sheila Cammack Well what a difference a week makes, on a windy Wednesday morning our Winter League team did battle for the last match of the season, with all to play for, against Greenlands but the visitors took the points 10-2. Our winning team: Malcolm Broughton, Sally Cordell, Ray Pollock & Pat Coffey 16-9. The Berleen team were winners: Cas Blay, Tony Campbell, Neil Morrison & Barry Edwards 18-12. FED 4’s The Blues travelled to Montemar for the final v Javea Green and had a close match but although they won the overall shots they lost the match 2 games-1. The winds that had been whipping up through the previous night brought unplayable conditions to La Finca on the wild Wednesday morning. With our tee times not starting until nearly 1pm there was a glimmer of hope that the continuous,
strong wind which swept across the course all morning might have blown itself out. It soon, however, became plainly obvious that the conditions were changing....but for the worse! It became more & more difficult to keep your footing and balls were frequently being moved by the powerful gusts. On one particular windswept hole, a good iron player in our group managed to strike the ball very well with his 6 iron into the wind including very little roll it travelled all of 110 metres. It was definitely more a day for staying indoors and playing dominoes!! NTP's on the par 3's were awarded to Ivan Hanak (Hole 3), John Trehy (Hole 6), Phil de Lacy (Hole 13) & Brian Staines (Hole 16). NTP's in 3 shots on three of the par 4's went to

AT LA FINCA Darren Hancock, Capt Steve Davis & Paul Cobain. Ever increasing numbers at this busy time of the year has warranted 5 prizes in each division. The bronze category's winners were Norman McBride in 5th (29), John Parker in 4th (30 C/B), Chris Hamblett in 3rd (30 C/B), Ray Ewins in 2nd (33) & Keith Stevenson in top spot with 35. Silver's rewards went to John Aitchison in 5th (29), Capt Steve Davis in 4th (31 C/B), Phil de Lacy in 3rd (31 C/B), Alan MacDonald in 2nd (31 C/B) & Mike Jordan took top slot with 32. The Gold division saw Shay Cunningham in 5th (29 C/B), John Osborne in 4th (29 C/B), Barry Roehrig in 3rd (31), Ivan Hanak in 2nd (33) & top of the shop went to Colin Rust with 35. Three knock-out matchplay games also took place in the very unfriendly conditions resulting in Darren Hancock just managing to eliminate Phil de Lacy 1 up, Los Shankers (Mike Jordan & Norman Padmore) beat Scouse & Spouse (Phil & Marg Birtwistle) 4+2 - I think the wind helped straighten their shanks! The final game saw the Roadrunners (Keith Stevenson & Norman McBride) successfully march on after overcoming Beejays (John Parker & Brian Staines). With a very good score on the day of 30 hard earned points, Jim Starbuck deservedly picked up the visitor's prize.

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB The annual North versus South competition took place last Saturday, this had to be the closest result since the event was first introduced 11 years ago. It was a great day, and there was a lot of 'friendly' rivalry taking place and a number of very close results. The North won by just two points Well Done Northerners! On Monday San Miguel entertained a touring team from the Isle of Wight, it was played in a great atmosphere and an enjoyable day was had by all. Soup and sandwiches were served before the game, and the Isle of Wight team entertained us at the end by singing a 'bowling ditty'. Very funny it was too. Dates for your diary - Bowling Presentation Dinner at El Prado on Tuesday 8th April, see Janet Thomas.

SPORTSMAN GOLF SOCIETY OH MY GOODNESS What was all that wind about? Well 23 players turned out for our outing at Alenda Golf, it was 23 as I decided I would take part myself after 4 months out. Ever had that feeling "I wish I hadn't of done that," well I had !! In the field of 23 players only 3 managed to hit the 30 points barrier, well done Helen Kinsella 34 pts, Tony Wilson 32 pts and (Steady 4 shanks) Willie Buchanan 30 pts. My mere 16 points I thought was embarrassing but I did have an excuse in my back pocket (I did not want the most golf title) however, back at base when receiving the cards good old Jim Gaw took that title away together with a further 4 players below 16 points Happy Days !!! Even some of the seasoned players didn't manage to break 20 points or if they did it was JUST! I must say it has to be the windiest golf outing we have ever experienced. Nevertheless an enjoyable day, Some good golf and the usual individual duals, Jake's a happy pooch (Cheers Andy Trefry). Get it while you can Spanish! Thanks again to the kind donations of prizes we covered all par 3's NTP, 2's sweep, 1st & 2nd Place

LO MARABU GOLF SOCIETY In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this month’s meeting a group of 32 players visited the established course at La Torre taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. This is the first time for a number of years that our society have played this course which is harder than the scorecard would suggest. Upon arrival all players had to ‘register’ their personal details and the daily licence was paid by non federated members before they were allowed to play. The course was in a good condition and enjoyed by all and the weather was good but mixed with gusty westerly winds and some tight pin positions making scoring difficult. Today we played for the ‘Whacker’ Trophy played annually in memory of former member Shaun Dear and his father Ken joined us for the day with his brother Dennis and not only put a ‘drink’ behind the bar for all players but also made a €50 donation to

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY We started the week with a 4 ball Texas Scramble commonly known in the Clubhouse as the Nick Campbell and Phil Herrington benevolent fund. Yet again they were drawn together and predictably won with a score of 59.3. The two passengers in the team were Annemarie Weisheit and Rod Bryant. The highlight of the round was an eagle on the Par 4 second hole. Runners up with a creditable 59.525 were the three ball comprising Lindsay Forbes, Brian Humpheyson and Alan Douglas. On Wednesday we were met with gale force winds which greatly affected the scoring for the majority in particular the higher handicap players who have difficulty carrying the ravines in the best of conditions. No one was able to equal par with the best score being 32 pts in both Categories. For most it was a round best forgotten however there was one silver lining in that no one won the 2's Club which means a roll-over to next week. The result was as
By MIKE CHAPMAN follows: Cat 1. 1st John Wheeler 32 pts (c/b) 2nd. Tom Hardie 32 pts 3rd. Joe Rothery 31 pts Cat 2. 1st Annemarie Weisheit 32 pts 2nd. Roger Tunstall 29 pts (c/b) 3rd. Rod Bryant 29 pts On Friday we played the third round of our 6 card Eclectic Joker Stableford competition. The scores on the day are unlikely to affect Lindsay Forbes' position at the top of the Category One table but in Category Two there were some good scores from those near the top of the table which may well result in a new leader at the half way stage once Bryan Neal has completed the number crunching. The top four scores were: 1st. Phil Herrington 41 pts 2nd. Rod Doel 39 pts 3rd. Carole Wheeler 38 pts (c/b) 4th. John Robertson 38 pts

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. THE HISTORY OF GOLF - PART 2 For the golf historians out there on the Costa’s you will recall in a previous article I gave a brief potted history of the game of golf which was generally as follows: The first stick and ball game that we know was a Russian game called ‘paganica’, which moved through Europe via Germany and France to Holland, where the Dutch made the most of it, playing a game they called ’kolf’. There is historical evidence of the Dutch playing something called ‘kolf’ going back to 1300. There is no evidence of golf in Scotland before 1450. ‘Kolf’ a game played on ice in the winter and fields in the summer died out in Holland in 1700. It was probably Scottish wool merchants who took the game to the British Isles. From this information we can see that perhaps the origins of golf were not as we believed based in Scotland. Even this history is about to change or is it? According to a recent article in the Daily Mail golf is now claimed to have it’s origins in of all places China. Professor Ling Hongling has stated that the game began in China in 945AD some 500 years the Scots first played the game. There are references in Chinese libraries to a pastime called ‘chulwan-chui’ which when translated means ‘to hit a ball’ Genghis Khan and his Mongol hordes are believed to have taken golf to Europe centuries later. There is also reference in a 10th century book in which a magistrate ordered his daughter to dig ‘goals’ in the ground so he may drive a ball into them with a purposely crafted stick. In addition two Chinese paintings from the 13th century depict noblemen hitting balls into holes with sticks that look remarkably like today’s golf clubs. Only time will tell whether golf history has actually been re-written but you should note that in the same article China claims to also have invented football, basketball and skiing. Whatever the origins of the game there is clearly a history associated to golf, which gives it a certain mystic. When you next venture onto the golf course, no matter how well you play, do the game justice, enjoy the camaraderie, the challenge and above all else enjoy yourself. Remember that all our fore fathers who created golf history would love to be the other side of the turf and to join you for one more game. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY Last Wednesday, the Society played a Texas Scramble at La Serena. There was a good turn-out for a course the society has not played for a number of years. The players were warned to put a few extra golf-balls in their bags as they would more than likely lose a few more than usual given that there is “water” on 16 of the 18 holes on the course. The course, in general, was in good condition and the greens were in excellent condition. The sun was out but unfortunately the wind was up to with a very strong cold almost gale force wind swirling around throughout the day which made playing conditions challenging. It seemed that on almost all the holes the wind was in your face and Par 4’s became Par 5’s. Many balls disappeared into the wet stuff. Nevertheless most of the players enjoyed the day. The winning team was Brian Smith, Paul Flanagan and Eddie Scott with a very creditable Gross score of 2 over par. In second place was the team of Victor Dew, Ted Hooker and Dave Winchcombe. In third place was the team of John King, Les Lindores, Keith Armstrong and Sheila McSweeney. The team who played the most shots and presumably lost the most balls to the water were John Dunnion, Ann Hobbs, Brian Airey and T Webb. The winners of the nearest the Pins were David McSweeney, Paul Flanagan

and Sheila McSweeney. The presentations were made at the Societies base, the Quesada Country Club after the game. A tasty hot & cold buffet was provided by Dave and Anita for which the Society is as always very grateful. The next game is an individual stableford at the course on our doorstep, which the Society has never played before, La Marquesa. There is a members meeting at the Quesada Country Club on Tuesday 1 April. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

CULLERA COMEBACK LEAVES TORRY SHELLSHOCKED FC TORREVIEJA.........3 CF CULLERA.................3 CF Cullera, six points and six places above Torrevieja in Tercera, are just one of the teams that the Saltmen need to overhaul if they are even to come close to retaining their slim hopes and stay in the mix until the end of the season. So on Sunday afternoon at the Vicente Garcia, an initiative introduced by the Board of Directors as they hoped to attract additional support, free entry for all unemployed, one last thoughtful endeavor to boost the home gate for this final attempt by the club to claw their way back into the play off places. And those who took advantage of the offer, said to be in the region of 50 people, were rewarded both with an immaculate playing surface, the best seen at the stadium for some little while, and a Torry team that at least attempted to provide it with some justice. By far the quickest out of the blocks the home side piled on the pressure from the start although the first real opportunity fell to Cullera when Cesar put his shot just wide of the post. The balance was restored with the next attack though. This time a peach of a shot from Carrasco looked to be dipping in but sailed agonizingly over the top of the bar. Cullera goalkeeper Parades produced a couple of fine saves as the home side bore down on the visitors goal but in an instant, the hero had turned to zero when, with Obele through on goal, he brought the Cameroon striker down on the edge of his box to earn an instant red card from the referee. Debatable though the position of the offence, Snr Gutiérrez immediately pointed to the spot and despite the gamesmanship involving the
replacement of Parades by Burguera, the spot kick from Alberto was a beauty, giving the reserve keeper no chance. Down to ten men the visitors found themselves two goals down just 6 minutes later after they conceded their 2nd penalty of the game. On this occasion there was no doubt whatsoever, a clear cut handball that earned Adrian Gomis a yellow card. Rather surprisingly Alberto ceded the task to Obele who copied his mentor by placing his effort in the identical place and while Burguera got his fingers to the ball there was too much power to prevent Torry’s second goal. A short spurt of bookings followed, after which Obele really should have added to the scoreline when he made a complete hash of a free header just 2 yards out. But going into the interval the two goal advantage was nothing more than Torry deserved. The home side extended their lead through Pastor on 84 minutes and when substitute Ruben Primo pulled one back for the visitors, his first goal of the season, with a bullet of a shot, with 4 minutes remaining we thought it was nothing more than a consolation, but instead it sparked a recovery the like of which has rarely been seen at the Vicente Garcia. Ruben Primo got his second of the season, and of the game, through a sea of legs a minute later and then in added time defender Castells hit an unstoppable drive from the edge of the box to level the scores at 3-3. Torry really didn’t know what had hit them and as Cullera celebrated as though they had just won the cup Ruben Primo’s 92nd-minute effort had completed a remarkable comeback from 3-0 down. Next Sunday FC Torrevieja travel to runaway league leaders Eldense who will be looking to make up for their surprising defeat at home to Novelda at the weekend.

CF MIL PALMERAS ROUNDUP Prebenjamin 2006 sponsored by Sunshine FMradio Benferri 3 Mil Palmeras 1 In this unusual Sunday afternoon time slot the young toros performed again to gheir recent high standards giving the leagues second place team a right scare. From the first whistle the midfield of Dylan Garry and Josh pushed Benferri back into their own half with a lung bursting effort while the defence of Millie Elliot and Mason didnt get flustered and kept out Benferri comfortably. Upfront we broke quite well and had a few half chances that could have changed the game. But eventually Benferri found a way through and went in 1 nil up at half time. The second half started even better when instead of crumbling Garry latched on to Millies long throw and finished well at the near post. Game on. With Kirill coming on with Alejandro and Jonathan they battled well but 2 lapses in marking let in Benferri for 2 soft and undeserved goals which Aaron could do nothing about. If we can just keep the concentration for the whole game even better results will come. Well done all players. Man of the match Dylan Cooke back to his best. Alevines - Semi Final 1st leg Cup Match La Aparecida 9 v 0 CF Mil Palmeras Sponsored By Talleras J Martínez Ford Garage San Miguel The Toros might have left themselves with a mountain to climb to reach the final but they battled hard for the entire match .On paper and in the flesh La Aparecida are a formidable challange having the highest goal differance in the league and again for the first 30 mins the Toros just about kept them at bay . With some stout defending and strong goalkeeping they frustrated La Aparecida but ended up sitting too deep to counter attack in forcé leaving them with just a couple of long range shots . Having gone 3 goals down in the first half the Toros were chasing the match which put there defence under more pressure . At times the Toros were able to push La Aparecida back but they just couldn't grab goal they needed . As the half went on the Toros efforts to contain and attack La Aparecida took there toll with the Toros energy levels dropping .La Aparecida made the most of the space to score but the Toros fought to the whistle . Well Done to all Players in this hard tough match. Player of the match Paolo Webb got right stuck in.
ALMORADI'S SECOND HALF DISPLAY WINS IT
Casals with former Olympic Gold medallist Daniel Plaza Next Saturday the 4th of April 2014 in the Pabellon Cecilio Gallego (The Blue Pavilion in the sports centre) in Torrevieja, there will be a night of boxing which will include 8 amateur international bouts with boxers from the United Kingdom, Spain and Norway. These will include a heavyweight bout, and will feature as the main bout of the evening, the Torrevieja fighter, Emiliano Casal, who has a professional record of 18 victories and two defeats. This will be an exciting and unique experience for Torrevieja as Emiliano, the current Spanish National Champion, has not boxed in his home town since 2007. Since that time, Emiliano has won the Transcontinental title at Super Lightweight in 2009 with a victory over Sento Martinez. Emiliano also went on to become the Hispanic Champion at Welterweight with a 2nd round stoppage over Venezuelan boxer, Jose de Jesus Lopez. In 2012, Emiliano Casal went on to win the Spanish title at lightweight with a TKO in the 2nd round against Felix Soria from the Balearic Islands. The 28 year old Soria announced his retirement from professional boxing after that fight. In 2013, in front of 3,000 partisan fans in Gijon (Asturias), Casal defeated local fighter Alejandro Rodriguez Pereira with a 7th round
knockout to claim a second Spanish National title. Emiliano is the first Professional boxer from Torrevieja to claim a National title and now, this coming FRIDAY 4th APRIL, he hopes to continue re-writing history when he takes on Juan Carlos Lopez, known as “King Daluz”. The Canary Island boxer comes into this fight unbeaten in his 10 professional bouts. He is an ex-member of the Spanish Olympic squad and held the Spanish title at Junior level. Tickets for the evening are on sale at the SPORTIN gymnasium (Crevillente Road) and from PIZZERIA EL GATO in La Zenia. Prices are 10 euro if bought before the evening of the event or 15 euro on the door. Ringside tickets are also on sale at 25 euro, whilst VIP tickets, at 50 euro each, will also include a catering service on the night. Anybody with a ticket to this event will also be able to attend the post fight party at the local night club, LOVE. It is important to show your ticket to gain entry to the post fight event. We would strongly advice to purchase your tickets in advance as the Pavilion has a limited capacity and expectation is running high in and around Torrevieja to witness this historic evening of boxing. As the half wore on Daya came more into the game and following a corner on 15 minutes the Almoradi keeper had to make a smart save. With both teams now committed to attacking, it was end to end football. The visitors had a couple of good chances on 20 minutes but the keeper was up to the task. Then it was the home side who had a couple of chances which the visitors capably dealt with. The first half came to a close with no goals to show for all the attacking that both sides had produced. Almoradi started the second half as they had the first and forced a couple of corners. Then on 50 minutes Danni in the Daya goal was called on to make two very good saves as Almoradi threatened to take control of the match. Minutes later Danni again came to the rescue turning a goal bound shot around the post. It was all Almoradi now and surely they must score soon ? The post rescued Daya on 58 minutes with Danni well beaten. Danni made a superb save on 65 minutes from a free kick only for the loose ball to be lashed home for 1 - 0 to the home side who thoroughly deserved their lead. Just a minute later the ball was again in the back of Daya's net but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Danni. Daya had a good chance on 78 minutes but Marcos who was on for the injured Luis saw his shot go wide and that was just about it, there were no further goals. It had been a disappointing second half by Daya following the promise of their first half efforts. The good sized crowd was treated to a very entertaining match that was played in a sporting manner. The referee had a good game and kept the play flowing at all times. Man of the Match was Danni for Daya. Daya Dave Team Sponsor: Segurlab
