EUROPEAN PARLIA MENT MAINTAINS SUPPORT FOR CALA MOSCA
Whilst political disagreements and legal arguments continue in Orihuela, the battle to protect what´s left of the natural landscape of the coastline continues, with the case for protecting Cala Mosca being heard once again before the European Parliament. Long fighting representative of the coastal zone, Bob Houliston of the C.L.A.R.O. political group, was accompanied by the Mayor of Orihuela, Monseratte GuillÊn of the Los Verdes, who became a popular ambassador for environmental matters when he launched a previous campaign to save natural land in Torremendo, appeared in front of the European Parliament Committee on Petitions on Tuesday, requesting that an environmental impact statement be prepared on behalf of the proposed construction work at Cala Mosca, where the natural land had
been disposed of by the previous Partido Popular government, in order to build houses in the area where a number of endangered species of plants and animals live. In a statement released by C.L.A.R.O. following the meeting in Brussels, Bob Houliston explained that the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament decided at a meeting on 1 April, to maintain support for the Petition submitted by C.L.A.R.O. in 2010 to save Cala Mosca, the last remaining green area on Orihuela Costa, from the destructive effects of the planned construction of over 1,500 new houses. This was the last meeting of the Petitions Committee before the European Parliament elections next month, after which a new committee will be formed. It was very important that the outgoing committee should declare that Cala Mosca remain on the agenda of the new committee. Continued on Page 2

Continued from Page One To achieve this end, not only did Bob Houliston, President of C.L.A.R.O., attend the meeting in person but so too did the Mayor of Orihuela, Montserrate Guillen and Carolina Gracia (Socialist Party) member of the government. Bob Houliston told the Committee that their presence together showed the broad, bipartisan support for preserving Cala Mosca as a natural area which would be of great environmental value and would be appreciated by residents and tourists alike. At the meeting, the Mayor of Orihuela described his government’s policy of ensuring the protection of Cala Mosca not only as a green space but also to safeguard two endangered species, a flower and a snail, which are found on Cala Mosca and which are protected under European Union environmental legislation. The representative of the European Commission said at the meeting that the Spanish authorities had been obliged to recognise that European environment legislation applied in the case of Cala Mosca and the Spanish authorities could not maintain that the building project approved was covered by a planning law which dated before Spain became a member of the European Union. As a result, the planned building project would require an Environmental Impact Declaration and the two endangered species would have to be protected. Bob Houliston said that thanks to the European Commission a public consultation over the project had taken place last April and over 1,000 citizens had expressed their concern to safeguard Cala Mosca. However, the all important Environmental Impact Declaration had not yet
been produced. Several parliamentarians spoke in the debate. All supported the aim of the Petition signed by 7,000 citizens. Thanks to their interventions and the presence of the delegation from Orihuela, the President of the Petitions Committee concluded that she would ensure that Cala Mosca should be on the agenda of the new Petitions Committee. The future of Cala Mosca required continued vigilance. Albeit no more protected now than it has been through the efforts of those involved, this is a huge step in the future protection of Cala Mosca, the only remaining natural area on a coastline which has become a beacon of construction over natural protection, a matter which has not only seen a lack of environmental protection being awarded to the endemic flora and fauna, but a situation which also affects many of those properties who suffer natural incursions such as flooding, after the neglect of the environmental impact was seldom considered over that of commercial gain. Not only that, is shows once more how the political groups can come together for a single positive goal, as a campaigner to protect the area, Bob Houliston has faced many a personal battle over recent years, but by him firstly allowing the Mayor to speak in a session he had arranged, and then the inclusion of the socialists offering their support, it shows the bipartite government team of the Los Verdes and PSOE are able to work together, and that the singular voice of a smaller, though dedicated group such as C.L.A.R.O., can also have a huge impact on supporting the areas which they are elected to represent.

Record numbers of people hoping to purchase a property in Spain visited the Spain Buying Guide stand at the “A Place in the Sun Live!” exhibition held in London at the weekend, confirming the market is firmly back on track and potential buyers thankfully are doing their homework. Richard Way, Editor at The Overseas Guides Company said: “Our stand received more enquiries at the London event than at any other show we have exhibited at, and those people we spoke to seemed genuinely serious about buying their dream Spanish home.” “There were no surprises about favoured

destinations – most of our enquiries focused on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Murcia, and we were able to put scores of people in touch with one or more of our trusted partners in Spain, including our recommended legal firm. “Having a joint stand with Smart Currency Exchange also meant we could explain how people could save money when sending funds to and from Spain, and how to minimise their exposure to exchange rates. Thanks to A Place in the Sun Live, we were able to give a small group of people a firm first foothold on the Spanish property ladder – and we look forward to seeing the results.”

BODY ON BEACH IDENTIFIED AS MISSING LIVERPOOL MAN Brennan Brennan fled to the Costa Blanca whilst waiting sen tence over a wounding charge
The bagged and bound body washed up on an Orihuela beach has been confirmed as missing Liverpool man, Francis Brennan, who was involved in a fake arrest when his vehicle was stopped by a gang pretending to be police officers, in January. The body was discovered on the 29th of March, washed up on Cala Bosque at La Zenia, wrapped in an industrial sack which was sealed in plastic, with initial reports suggesting that it had met a violent end having suffered blows to the shoulders, back and the head, thought quite probably to be the cause of death. Brennan, aged 25, fled to Spain having been found guilty and awaiting sentence over a wounding charge at a Swedish House Mafia music concert in Milton Keynes, in July of last year. He is believed to have travelled to the Costa Blanca before Christmas, with his girlfriend, Sophie, ignoring the advice of his parents to stay in the UK for the court proceedings. It is understood Brennan knew people in Javea having previously been on a stag do there. At the time of his abduction, Brennan is believed to
have been driving away from a gym with a friend at the time when his car was stopped. Three men wearing baseball caps, described as “similar to those worn by the Guardia Civil”, then forced Brennan out of the car and took him away. Merseyside Police launched an appeal for information shortly after the disappearance on January th 24th. DS Carr from Merseyside police said that “A number of people posing as police officers from the Guardia Civil handcuffed and took him away”. They also suspected the Anfield man’s own involvement in crime may have been behind his disappearance. Merseyside Police have said that the Spanish authorities are leading the investigation into his apparent murder and that support was being offered to the Brennan family. Brennan had previously been convicted of affray at the age of 19, involved with gang trouble outside the home of Jim Barrett, described as a “loved granddad”, who died of a heart attack. His parents had said that he had “tried to turn a corner” upon his release from a young offender´s institute, but losing his job as the age of 21 had forced him to reoffend.

MARCH - W ARMEST AND DRIEST MONTH SINCE 2008 March was the warmest and driest month in the province of Valencia since 2008, with an average temperature of 11.3 degrees, 0.7C above the average, and an average rainfall of 22 liters per square meter, 41% below the normal climatological rainfall of 37.6 liters.
The Meteorological Agency also said last week that on many parts of the Alicante coastline, particularly on the Southern Costa Blanca, the amount of accumulated rain during the month has been less than five litres per square meter. In terms of the March temperatures there has been a spike of cold weather, but several "abnormally warm" days between the 15th and 22nd, noting especially the 17th, when the temperature exceeded 27 degrees in several locations, peaking in Carcaixent Xativa at 28.6 degrees. However there were two periods in which significant amounts of rainfall were recorded, but in a very small area. On the 12th/13th of the month some observatories exceeded 50 liters of accumulated rainfall in a 36 hour period with the maximum recorded in Antella at 80 litres. On Sunday 30th there was rainfall with a torrential intensity to the south of La Safor Hills, just inland of Gandia, exceeded 100 litres and then showers of high to very strong intensity a little further south of the region, with an aggregate of 41 litres in less than three hours. On balance though, with respect to the first quarter of 2014, the rains have been absent from most of the territory, and with there being so little the first consequence has been a lack of soil moisture, with less than 10% moisture on the maximum capacity estimated-over 2500 square kilometers of the province Alicante, almost half of the provincial area. This of course could have an effect on the current harvest of crops.

The councillor highlighted the collaboration of up to 62 local authorities and partner companies which makes possible the achievement of this Spring Cultural Programming. He said that Torrevieja remains committed to supporting culture with some great shows that will maintain the city as a true reference at national and international level.
Y
The program began with the youth celebration of Habanera which was held at the Municipal Theatre at the weekend. On April 12 the XVIII edition of the Book Fair will open in the Paseo Vista Alegre. On 25 and 26 this April there will be the 28th International Meeting of Choirs, organized by the Coral Torrevejense. On 1 May the National Ballet of Moldova will present their interpretation of Sleeping Beauty and on May 2 the Elche Symphony Orchestra will perform a special concert at the International Music Auditorium. At the Teatro Municipal on 10 May there will be The Diary of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain starring Ana Milán and Fernando Guillén Cuervo. Of course I could continue to list the events which I’m sure you would find of interest but instead why not obtain your own copy of the brochure which is available now from all Torrevieja Council and Leisure outlets. Alternatively you can print it off yourself by going to the website www.torrevieja.com and finding the appropriate link.
NEW CREMATORIUM TO BE BUILT A DJACENT TO TORREVIEJA CEMETERY Last week’s Torrevieja Plenary session began with a minute’s silence in remembrance of the recent death of President Adolfo Suárez, the first President of the Spanish democracy following the rule of General Franco. However, as has become the norm over recent months, the minute didn’t pass in complete silence as it was broken by the noise and disruption happening outside the Municipal building with the Police and Refuse Collection demonstrations. One of the main issues on the agenda generating greater interest than usual was the acceptance of the General Plan number 102, the extension of the municipal cemetery. The Town Planning Councillor, Francisco Moreno, said that the land will not be reclassified and any building work must take into account the possible future need for the expansion of the National Highway 332 He said that it is planned to build a crematorium on the edge of the present cemetery and that additional adjoining land will be donated to the city by it’s owner to ensure the cemetery’s future extension. Greens spokesman, José Manuel Dolon, said that there was undoubtedly a need for the extension of the funeral facility and he said that he
was also satisfied with the adequacy of its location, but the PP then said that the council "must talk with residents living within 200 meters of the cemetery and obtain their agreement. "

NEWS FROM AROUND ORIHUELA AND THE COSTA NEW CONTAINERS FOR FLUORESCENT LIGHTS Orihuela Town Hall has recently put out four new containers for the collection of fluorescent light bulbs, tubes, lamps and LEDs. Such lights are known to contain small amounts of mercury and must be properly disposed of so as not to present a danger to anyone with whom they might subsequently be handled. In their recycling their materials can also be re used. The containers have been installed at the entrance to both the Orihuela and the Orihuela Costa Town halls and at the Alameda del Mar Civic Center. DAVID COSTA CRITICISES COUNCILLORS SALARY INCREASE Councillor David Costa (PP) accused the government team last week of increasing their salaries on "a discretionary basis, without any criteria" at an additional cost to the city budget of 34,500 euros. He says there is no logic or reason to it and in these austere times there is no justification whatsoever in the action as the salaries they are already receiving are more than adequate. He also criticised the need of the council to hire an additional employee at a cost of 6,800 euros purely to assist with tourism and to operate the Council’s Social Network site and wondered why the Municipal Communications Budget of 91,000 was not enough.
LA ZENIA FOOTBRIDGE NEARS COMPLETION The footbridge and cycle path over the AP7 motorway linking La Zenia to Los Dolses is ever closer to completion following the placement of the two metal spans on Tuesday and Wednesday nights last week. By necessity the spans were installed on separate nights which meant the closure of the motorway for a little over an hour on two consecutive occasions. Whilst a small construction team continues with the installation of the bridge the remainder of the crew will turn their attention to the pathway itself, in preparation for the final covering of tarmac which is expected to be laid in about 3 weeks.
Opening hours will be extended for the summer evenings
The spans were erected on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Costa says there is no need for the increases
EXTENDED CHURCH OPENING HOURS TO CATER FOR TOURISTS An additional 6,000 euros was allocated last week to cover the cost of extending the opening hours at a number of churches to cater for visiting tourists in Orihuela, the Santas Justa and Rufina, the Iglesia Santiago and the church of the Virgen of Monserrate.
Opening hours which will in future meet the needs of the Department of Tourism will be from 10.30 to 13.30 and from 17.00 to 19.00hrs during the winter months set while during the summer period the morning timings will remain the same but the hours will be extended in the evenings until 20.00 hours. As a result of the additional income the two churches will not charge any supplementary fees for municipal activities but the City Council will be required to provide at least two days notice in advance when they require to hold an event. The agreement, which was passed by the Governing Board last week includes a number of points made by the diocese, including an arrangement to host cultural events and guided tours organized by the town for which they may not charge any entry to those attending. In coming to the understanding with the council the Diocese reserves the right to deny the use of these buildings at its discretion should the use be contrary to the principles of the Catholic Church or detract from the sacredness of the site. Although this has never happened so far they would include activities such as concerts. The Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Rosa MartĂnez, said that the City has no problem in accepting this clause together with a number of other points made by the diocese and that the agreement has now been signed to the satisfaction of both parties.

ELCHE TO INSTAL AUDIO FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED The municipal department responsible for Social Action, in collaboration with the ONCE Foundation, has launched the Pasblue Project, has launched a scheme aimed at improving the safety and independence of people with visual disabilities at the city’s traffic lights and pedestrian crossings
Councillor Antonio Luis Martínez-Pujalte said last week that the initiative is based on an audio installation, a device which is now available at seven pedestrian crossings which are activated by a remote control or via a Bluetooth 'smartphone'. The device works through an audible warning which can only be activated by a user with a visual disability, thus, in addition to assisting his passage, it avoid unnecessary sounds The acoustic information transmitted through the system is based on discrete frequency tones and duration that allow the user to approach and move to the starting area with the assistance of ringtones. A number of different tones will indicate when they can begin to cross. The device is installed in la Plaça de Baix, Puente Ortices with Corredora, Maestro Albéniz and Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, Reina Victoria with Jorge Juan, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez with Jorge Juan, en la Avenida de Alicante and Plaza de Benidorm and finally at la Plaza de Barcelona.

ALTEA TO INTRODUCE BEACH FOR DOGS
Photos of dogs playing in the sand and enjoying the Mediterranean waters are rare indeed, certainly during the summer months when the legislation regarding their situation on the beach is strictly enforced, but all that may soon be changing, certainly in the Costa Blanca resort of Altea where, following a petition consisting of 150 signatures, and a further 161 gathered online, the introduction of a ‘dogs only beach’ is being pursued by local resident Monika Klostermann. The area that she is proposing for the enjoyment of dogs is adjacent to the chiringuito Arrecife de la playa de la Olla Monika argues that it is an area of rocks which are filled with algae, adding that it is a part of the coastline that few swimmers use even in summer. "Every day there are many local residents who walked their dogs in the area and like everyone else we should all be entitled to enjoy nature," she says. So on Monday last week Monika took the step of meeting with the councillor for Beaches Jaime Sellés. Following the meeting which she called ‘productive’ Monika said that the mayor has stated that he will look favourably on the proposal which he called "coherent and workable." Sellés himself said that he will now evaluate the request and see if he can reach an agreement with other local residents which, if they agree, will enable him to submit the proposal to the full council for their consent "I know that not everyone will be happy with the proposal," explains Monika. And I fully understand that we live in a town where tourism is extremely important so therefore in summer, and if necessary, we could limit the time allowing dogs to use the beach in the morning up to 10 o'clock and perhaps from 8 o clock in the evening. This proposal is in addition to a number of others which were submitted in the past year in La Vila, Benidorm, El Campello and Gandia. These last two were launched last summer. The La Vila submission collected more than 500 signatures on a web based petition while the Benidorm appeal currently exceeds 1,400 signatures.

BIGASTRO MAYOR VETOES SEVEN COUNCIL VOTES Orihuela is not the only town in the Vega Baja which is governed by a minority council. The same situation also applies in Bigastro where the mayoress, Charo Bañuls (PP), continues to use her veto at council votes to block motions submitted by the majority opposition made up of the PSOE and Los Verdes.
The most recent occasion was last week’s plenary where she used her vote on seven different occasions, which the Socialist group have denounced as a violation of the citizens rights in the small town. In her defence the mayor says that that she is only repaying the PSOE who have systematically excluded PP motions in an attempt to prevent opposition rule. Unfortunately while the politicians play their silly games, with little thought for the suffering public, the situation could be allowed to continue until the next series of local elections due for May 2015.

MSC Med Cruise September. September is the ideal month for cruising on the Mediterranean. A tremendous 8 day cruise is the one which sails from Valencia with the MSC ship “Musica”. MSC entered the cruise market in the 1960’s, and is one of the fastest growing cruise comcompanies in the world, using some of the newest vessels currently at sea. This exciting cruise vists some of the most iconic venues on the Mediterranean. After leaving Valencia it sails to France’s second largest city, the city of Marseille. During the heady days of the French Empire this was the main seaport of France.t. The largest and officially the sunniest major city in France, you could sometimes be forgiven for thinking you had arrived in Paris with familiar names like Sacre Couer, Basilique de Notre Dame, and Arc de triumph being given to some of the city’s land marks. Being a large city there is no shortage of things to see and do, and with the city centre being largely pedestrianised, this is a pleasant experience. Sailing on from Marseille, our next port of call is Genoa . An intricate maze of narrow streets lead us past palaces, mansions, and museums into charming tree lined squares. Shops which have traded for over a hundred years sit cheek
by jowl with modern trendy wine The MSC Musica blends maritime traditions, culture and bars. A cable car and moving fine cuisine to deliver the ultimate cruising experience staircase are avialable to take the adventurous to the higher points. Or for the more sedate, a hop on hop of tourist bus is available. The next stop Civitaveccia is the port for Rome. The eternal city from which the mighty Romans ruled huge chunks of the ancient world. Loads of things to see here, including a state within a state, the Vatican city, the Coliseum, and the Trevi Fountains. Now a bright, bubbly modern city with masses to see and surprisingly easy to find your way about. From Rome we move to Sicily. I am sure you all remember that schoolboy rhyme “Big boot Italy kicked little Sicily” That’s right, this is the island which sits of the southern tip of mainland Italy. The port we pull into is Palermo. This is one of these places where time stood still. The Vucciria market introduces us to the scents and smells of what is more like an oriental location than a European one. The former 9th Century Palace of the Normans serves as the Sicilian parliament. Here you can find some of the most impressive ancient mosaics to be found anywhere in the world. Nearby the red domed hermitage of San Giovanni, a former Benedictine abbey soars above surrounding buildings. The cathedral houses tombs from the Greek, Roman and Norman eras and is host to the jewel encrusted crown of Catherine of Aragon. If you like the Macabre, then the Catacomb of Cappuccini is for you. On show here are ancient corpses which
were interred still wearing their clothes. Best not to if you are of nervous disposition. Crossing the water to Africa gives us taste of a different world as we reach Tunisia. Here camel rides, vast markets selling everything from gold and silver ornaments to locally produced spices and carpets and white walled villages with all windows and doors painted in the symbolic blue favoured by the Islamic faith. Crossing back into Spain brings us to the main Balearic island of Mallorca and its beautiful capital Palma. A lovely city which is dominated by a rather beautiful Cathedral which towers over the a forest of tiny yachts Which bob gently up and down in the sparkling blue waters of the bay. A variety of excellent seafood restaurants line the waterside. A perfent final destination. Sadly all good things come to an end and the next day we find ourselves back where we started in Valencia. But what a wealth of memories we return with. This cruise is currently being offered by David’s Coachtrips including transfers to and from Valencia, and with an all inclusive arrangement on board from only 791€ per person. Given the quality of the ship and the fabulous range of destinations this is an excellent price. The dates of 11-18 September are perfect for this part of the Mediterranean. LEADER ZENIA BOULEVARD GETS PERMANENT TOURIST INFO POINT ADVERTISING HOTLINE
The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martinez, together with the manager of La Zenia Boulevard Shopping Mall, Almudena Soubrier, have signed a collaboration agreement to continue the tourist information point in the mall on a permanent basis. The Councillor said that it would better serve the 70,000 people of the region who attend annually seeking tourist and cultural information.
The service was first introduced into the centre last July since when it has provided information relating to the coast and beaches, as well as the heritage and culture of the region to thousands of people, both residents and visitors to the area. Martinez sad that it has quickly become a vital and strategic point "to publicize both our local activities and the city of Orihuela as a tourist destination." The two parties, the Council and the Boulevard, are currently co editing a cultural and tourist brochure in which the centre is heavily featured alongside many other local activities and venues as well as forthcoming gastronomic events. Meanwhile, Soubrier has justified the agreement stating that "there was a significant demand for tourist information, especially from foreign customers' requiring information at the tourist office. In addition, she remarked that there will be 20,000 copies of the jointly produced tourist brochure which will be distributed free. Currently there are two assistants provided in the Tourist Information Point and although they were initially hired on a 12 month contract it now looks as though they will both be extended.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
The Last Gin and Tonic So what do you want done with your body when you have finally drunk your last gin and tonic? Yes, I know that this is not the cheeriest subject to read, but it has to be said and the issue has to be faced. This is an area that few expats consider, and recent personal experiences have alerted me to some of the dangers of ignoring the issue. I have to admit that this is not an area that I have given too much thought too either. Burial and cremation sound rather old hat, burial at sea rather more romantic, but I am not a good sailor. Then there is embalming; I rather fancied being pickled in a very large vat of fine malt, but one of my friends thought it would be a waste of good malt. For expats, the choices are rather limited. The obvious choice is, of course, cremation. It is quickly done and dusted, if you forgive the pun, and then your loved ones can scatter your ashes in a favourite place, or, after quite a lot of bureaucracy and additional expense, you can be popped into a special container, flown home in style, preferably not by a certain low cost Irish airline, and scattered lovingly somewhere in the country from where you tried so desperately hard to escape. There is burial of course, but in many countries, this is not burial in a green and pleasant churchyard, which appeals to many, flooding aside. In many countries, ‘burial’ means merely being popped into a kind of
filing cabinet for the length of time that has been paid for. So what happens after expiry of the 25 or 50 years that the inheritors of your estate have begrudgingly paid for? Yes, you guessed it, out you come! I leave the rest to your imagination. Then there is the option of leaving your body to medical science. This could be either for transplanting various bits and pieces to people who really need it, which would be very useful. Alternatively, your body could go for medical science and be used by student medics to examine various body parts and tissues. Now, I am not that altruistic, and personally I find this all rather distasteful. However, I know that many, and particularly those who have been in the medical profession, find this idea appealing. Should this be the case, I urge intending donors to carefully check out all the facts before registration and to read the small print about the medical institution’s right to refuse your body when the time comes. Sometimes, it may be that, in cases such as cancer, they do not wish to have the body, or simply that they have too many. One forgotten impact of the financial crisis is that there are often more donations of bodies for medical research than are needed in some countries. Quite simply, donors sometimes donate their bodies to escape high funeral costs, as the receiving institution usually pays for the final disposal of the body. In turn, this has meant that there is often a surplus of bodies and an intended well-meaning donation is refused when the time comes. This can cause enormous unexpected financial problems and distress for the families of the departed. Funeral costs are very high in many countries, and it is wise to take out a funeral plan to pay for these costs. Premiums are usually very reasonable, and the earlier such a policy is started the cheaper the premiums will be. When the time comes, the existence of a funeral plan can take away much of the stress of arranging and paying for a funeral. In Spain and the Canary Islands, for instance, funerals usually take place within two or three days of death, which can make the release of
funds to pay for it very difficult. A funeral plan helps to ease many of the problems that expats often face. Meanwhile, get on with your life in the sun, but recognise that each day, as well as each gin and tonic, is a bonus. I promise that I will write something a little cheerier next time. As the third week of heats begins, six more amateur cooks try to prove to the judges that they have the potential to be the tenth MasterChef champion. Firstly, the contestants are asked to cook their calling card, and have just one hour to dazzle the judges with one plate of food that shows just what they can do. They then face the infamous invention test, choosing between two sealed boxes of ingredients. This time round, sweet ingredients include apples, chestnuts and cloves, while the savoury box contains duck breast, mussels and rainbow chard. Two amateurs are sent home, and the four remaining cooks must cook an impressive menu for some special guests from the show’s past. At the end of this, John and Gregg will select two cooks to take the next step in the competition and go through to the week’s quarter-final. 22:00 Monkey Planet. Family Matters. Episode 2. Elsewhere, George has a very close encounter with some hunting chimpanzees. But living in families is not always easy; in Gibraltar, barbary macaques steal babies to impress their boss. TORRY TENPIN BOWLERS MAKE HISTORY Leganés, Madrid, 30/3/13. - True to their original multinational ethos, Euro Bowling Torrevieja, the Ozone-based tenpin club of Spanish and international residents, sail to a comfortable win of the national Primera División at Madrid’s Isla Azul Lanes, thereby achieving promotion to División de Honor, Spanish bowling´s “Premier League”. Having won Second Division last year, EBT thus proclaim themselves back-to-back champions. The victorious squad consisted of eight bowlers representing five nationalities: Belgian, English, Finnish, Norwegian, and Spanish. Having created a five-point lead over Madrid’s Capital before the final seven-match round robin, EBT managed to widen the gap to thirteen points. The runners-up also advance, but since Capital already have a team in the top division, the honour goes to Joventut Al-Vici from Barcelona who managed to keep 300 Oviedo and Madrid’s New Project at bay by nine points. Former Spanish international bowler Lorenzo Quereda fell only one pin behind to average 198.21. In the season’s overall list, Kjell and Lorenzo claimed second and third place, respectively. The third man over the team average was the team’s only lefthander Shane “Rambo” Winfield with a steady 189.00. 183.58 and 180.25, respectively. The rest of the squad, Finnish virtuosos Markku Määttä and Olli Leppänen, and EBT’s “workhorse” Juanjo Carral, didn’t have their day but made sure enough frames were filled to guarantee the promotion. Also contributing to the team’s success in earlier rounds were Manuel Priego, Antonio Bermúdez, Pedro Martínez, Eero Lento, Jukka Koskinen, and Jarmo Peltonen. In the Female Top Division’s last fixture at Paterna, EBT’s ladies, struggling with physical problems, were never in a position to threaten the top teams and finished penultimate, in sixth position, with 82 points. Championship was finally clinched by three points by Torrejón (152), to the disappointment of Capital (148), Ilicitano of Elche finishing in third place (140). The individual trophy was raised by Elche’s French Lady Laurence Gaillard, who bowled through the three rounds at an impressive 196 pace. As for EBT bowlers, Pirjo “Phoenix” Koski (recently bounced back after an injury), posted the team’s high average, 171.17, while Mirja Hakonen was the season’s top scorer with 171.33. Other EBT female team members included Marion Haynes, Betty Hill, María Pérez, and Anne-Marie Jansson.

180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams x2, Paul Durrant x4, Lee Maiden x3 (Meerkats), Sid Cross x4 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters), Mike Smith, Mel Dawson (Breakaways Bears) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 Shortest leg: 14 darts Lee Maiden, Meerkats The Meerkats are almost there. A great win against their Hub counterparts, the Hyenas, virtually ensures the league championship to Derek Kingsbury´s Kats. With three matches to play the table toppers are 36 legs ahead of nearest rivals Que Pasa. Losing all three by a 120 margin, and the Eagles winning all theirs by the same margin would result in a play-off. Possible but unlikely. Kingsbury will have to wait until April 17th to gain at least one leg when playing Gail Todd´s Gogarty´s, for league glory. The Pint Depot Kings are almost there. An excellent away victory at Gogarty´s keeps them firmly in line for the League Plate, although they have two difficult matches in their last three, home to Que Pasa and away to Busters. Their nearest rivals the Tavern have an even more difficult task in facing the Hyenas, Gogarty´s and Que Pasa. It could be down to the last game. The Pint Depot Queens were almost there. Entertaining Madigans Misfits the Royal family found themselves on 5 apiece with 2 to play and a real chance of one or both points. Alas it didn’t happen, but 5 legs is their best effort of the season and with two of their remaining three games against opposition just above them, who knows, may be a victory is on the cards. A nice haul of 14 tons and ton pluses contributed to a home victory for the Eagles of Que Pasa, when playing the Honeys of Hattons who gave a good all round performance winning a respectable 4 legs. Jim Waddell 100 and Jim Storey 120 did the damage in the first leg, Kevin Wood cleaning up for the hosts with a nice 70 out (S15,S15,D20). It was soon 2-0 with both sides pounding the lipstick. Joe Cuyt 100 and Eddie Klimonis 140 and a double did just enough with Simone de Lacey, 100 Tracey Simpson 98 and Julie McCulloch holding their own against strong opposition. 3 tons in the second 701 triple courtesy of Stuart Clark 2x100 and Wood weren’t enough as Phil de Lacey 139 and Ray Green D16 pulled one back for Hattons. Klimonis added 2 more tons in the first double, partner Cuyt pegging out on D16, to take a 2 leg advantage. Two great legs followed from the visitors, Mr. de Lacey taking out D20 in a very tight leg and Green hitting a ton and D4 to level at 3-3, partner Mrs. de Lacey sharing the scoring. After the break the Eagles went to town. Klimonis made it 5 tons and two finishes for himself this one on D20 with Cuyt finishing D8 for 5-3. Wood just got the better of Mr. de Lacey slotting home D20 after a ton. A great effort from Green just failed to prevent the loss as Waddell hit S20,D20 and a ton to take the 7th leg and match. Clark 100 made it 8-3 on D6 to leave Simpson D5 the consolation of a 4th leg for the Honeys. What was anticipated to be the match of the week between the
Meerkats and Hyenas didn’t quite materialise. Just 8 tons or more from the Kats and 5 from the Hyenas were way below the numbers expected, the Kats however added two more maximums to their impressive tally. The first came in the 1001 team game from Pat Abrams who then completed the leg on T17,D16. What Abrams lacked in fire power this week was made up for with finishing power going out in the next leg on T19,D18 for 2-0. The Kats were 3-0 up in no time with Alex Nikolov and Paul Durrant scoring tons with Graham Todd converting D9. Abrams figured in the first pair with captain Kingsbury, but were powerless in preventing Martyn Lewis and Shaun Smith 100,140 the latter completing the 601 on S17,D20. Durrant posted the second maximum of the evening, his fourth this season adding D5 for the leg with Lee Maiden. The Hyenas needed the 6th leg to remain in the game. Geoff Harvey 116 and Lee Holtham D12 duly obliged for a 2-4 half time score. The match resumed with Smith facing Abrams in the first single. As expected the Kat scored well including a 140, but it was his opponent taking the glory on D10 after a nice ton for 4-3. Durrant faced the useful Miller in the next, but the Hyena couldn’t find the treble (probably due to his double consumption) with the Kat scoring 140 to set up D20, gained second dart. Maiden ensured the draw with 2x100 and D20, Nikolov winning the match on D8 in the next. Lewis raised the Hyenas spirits with an excellent 109 out against Kingsbury, finding T19,S20,D16 for the highest finish of the evening. Alan Ostrowski completed the match on D3. An unexpected comfortable victory for the Kats against a very good outfit, that just wasn’t up for it on the night. However some great individual performances particularly from Smith and Lewis. Porterhouse maintain fifth spot winning away this week to Breakaways. Carl Wilson was the Bears only victor in the first half, his D7 finish coming in the doubles against Ray Hayes and Mike Newberry, who had earlier finished D4 and D16 in the 1001 and first treble. Peter Ayres pegged D4 in the second triple and then partnering Yvonne Rouffignac against Sarah Simpson and Jay Sharp continued his fine form hitting 2x100 and his second double of the night on D4. The Sandersons, Ray and Sue, completed the doubles, Ray scoring 95 and D2 for 1-5 at the break. Brian Nash D7 made it 6 for the Porters, leaving Hayes the opportunity of glory finishing the 501 with a 125 and D11. Rouffignac 118 and D18 made it 8, captain Sanderson doing his bit by making it 9 on D12. Simpson minus those boots this week had the difficult task of facing Ayres who added a further ton and his third finish on D14. Newberry completed the match with a fine 122 and D4 for two valuable points. PB´s Pirates faced an uphill task against fourth placed Busters this week. However some creditable performances materialised from the Pirates against formidable opponents. Mark Filer was a little out of sorts just managing 3 tons this week supported by a 140 from Paul Dowinton and a ton from Ray Harvey. Shirley Roberts won her singles with a tasty 116 to compliment the winning double. Michelle Lane for the Pirates also returned a 116. Barry Weston D8 got the first of the visitors 3 legs with John Lane adding a second in the singles. Gilly Kirby got the third and a real Euronics scalp, taking out Dowinton on 65 (S17,S8,D20) to earn herself the accolade of Pirate of the night. The Queens would liked to have the finished the match after the first leg, which was completed by Ann Griffiths on D7 for a rare early lead. The advantage was short lived as Leah Chesworth found D8 to level, after Karl Cooper had hit 116. George Caine got the Misfits into the lead with D7 all 6 players in this triple contributing well particularly Marie Dunne hitting 95. Cheryl Sleath and Lorraine Cox figured for the Queens in the first double and levelled the score via Cox. Dunne maintained her scoring prowess and then added a double 2 to once again give the Queens the lead. Some steady scoring from Pete James enabled the Misfits to secure the last leg and a draw at half time, the Madigans man planting D19 first dart. James was chosen by captain Sonya Cooper to go first in the singles and it paid off as a dodgy D3 gave the visitors the lead despite some heavy scoring and missed double opportunities from Cox. Karl Cooper was expected to take the next after some excellent scoring, but Sleath had other ideas with her own scoring efforts but with the added bonus of D9. Captain Cooper faced the inimitable Dunne in the third singles and succumbed to some very good scoring from the Royal who eventually found D7 for a 5-4 lead. Tina Kaylor D2 levelled for the Misfits and with two to play could it possibly be a first for their Royal Highnesses? No it couldn’t. Chesworth pummelled the treble against opponent Rachael Broadhead but couldn’t finish giving Queen Rachael a chance of victory which
unfortunately wasn’t taken as the Misfit ensured the draw and point. Vi Turner found herself playing for a share of the points against George Caine, currently finding some useful form. Both players scored well with Caine edging ahead until he unnecessarily bust 72 leaving the possibility of shared honours to Turner. Unfortunately being 4 feet something D1 is beyond her Highness´ capabilities and Caine finished his 501 for the match and both points. Dave Wright had to take captain´s responsibilities this week in the absence of Ian Sleath, suffering from a major bout of man flu. The Kings from Pint Depot made the 3k journey to Gogarty´s hoping for a victory to maintain their aspirations of silverware in the shape of the League Plate. Two tons from Gary Minor backed up with two 80 pluses from Eddie Fozzard should have been enough to take the first, but Elaine Willis 111 and John Linton 140 and D10 thwarted their expectations. Matt Cummins 104 and Wright 81,D8 levelled for the Kings who then took the advantage via Martin Bynorth on D5. The visitors increased their lead through Fozzard 81 and D11, despite a 114 from Steve Woods. Linton paired with Richard Patterson in the second doubles and acquitted themselves well particularly the latter, but it was Minor taking the honours with a further ton and D11 for 1-4. Captain Wright ensuring he didn’t let the side down made it a surprising 1-5 score line and one eye definitely on the League Plate. Gail Todd got it right by placing Patterson first in the singles who promptly dumped Fozzard with a 71 out (T17,D10). Cummins went one better in the next finishing his leg on 96 (S20,T20,D8) for 2-6. Minor had the benefit of playing the delightful by name and nature Bliss Wright, who is also pretty useful in the scoring department. Minor kept his concentration for the leg and match for the Kings. Woods pulled one back for Gogarty´s on D8 against a steady Frankie Wurrorck, only for Ron Cornelius to increase the advantage to 5 with some impressive scores. Kevin Procktor was in good form facing Wright scoring a ton and two 80 pluses to set up the winning D8 for 4-8. Its the La Zenia Tool Hire Mens and Alex Nikolov Building Services Ladies Singles this week, both competitions anticipating a tremendous semi finals on May 8th at Breakaways. The four venues in the mens competition all have potential outright winners participating. Gogarty´s looks a real toughie, John Walker, Lee Holtham and Pat Abrams play there, but just one draw takes place and these players may find themselves in one half of the draw knocking each other out. The Hub features comedian Peter Ayres, Alex Nikolov and Mark Filer with plenty of opposition from John Linton and Phil de Lacey. Over at Playa Flamenca at the Busters bar Derek Kingsbury will be organising Ray Harvey, Paul Dowinton and Will Hammond, all playing with home advantage but they will be up against Meerkats John Eyre and 180 man Lee Maiden. Cyril Harrison could take out a name or two. Que Pasa´s Den Hall is organiser down at PB´s (Los Dolses) and will be expecting his two players there Stuart Clark and Kevin Wood to figure in the latter stages. In their way will be Sid Cross currently enjoying some fine form, Joe Miller and my dark horse tip Shaun Smith from the Hyenas a tremendous player when in form could find himself in the finals. In the Ladies, current champion Babs Warren isn’t defending her title this term. A broken arm is preventing the Buster from regular playing at the moment and she will have to sit out the competition. At the Hattons venue team mates Shirley Roberts and Irene Russell will be attempting to keep the coveted trophy at Playa Flamenca, whilst Yvonne Rouffignac and Simone de Lacey will be doing their utmost to wrench the trophy into either Porterhouse or Hattons respectively. Costa Blanca Champions North & South 2014 What can anyone say about the success story is that is VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB The Club was formed as recently as 2010 but in just 4 short years we have gone from new boys on the block to Champions of the CBBA Northern and Southern Alicante Leagues. No other club has ever had such a sensational rise from beginners to CHAMPIONS in such a short period of time. On Monday 31st we travelled to Bonalba Bowls Club to take on Benitachell Lions the current holders of the trophy but as they say the bigger they are the harder they fall and Vistabella not to be phased by reputations, met the challenge and came out 4 rinks to 1 winners. Winning rinks were Charlie Watkins. Arthur Brown and Maggie Furness, Martin Foulcer, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee, Tony French, Mike Regan and Ian Kenyon and Gail Willshire, Les Barber and Fred Willshire and although Beryl Regan, Mac Maclean and Bill Corbishley lost on the day we mustn’t forget that their contribution throughout the season has been part of the reason we were able to take part in this playoff in the first place along with a number of our
other bowlers who for one reason or another were not available on the day. Next week the club will travel to the Almeria region to take on Indalo Bowls Club and Almeria Bowls Club in some friendly competition before the various Summer leagues start all over again. Just a reminder to our members the AGM is now scheduled for Wednesday 23rd April at 2.00 for 2.30 not 10.30 as previously advised.

LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY CAPTAIN VERSUS CICE CAPTAIN TROPHY Thursday morning dawned fair with both men assessing their respective teams to decide which pairs could best help them to win the inaugaral Capt. versus Vice Capt. Trophy. Played on a best hole score basis in a matchplay format, an extremely competitive tournament ensued ,with many cries of anguish and triumph ringing around the course. Typically the Captain's assessment of the" unlucky" loss of his match to an excellent approach shot by the President on the 18th could still be heard well into the evening. In the end, everybody seemed to enjoy the format ,and Vice -Capt. Graham Marriner accepted the Trophy with suitable modesty having emerged the winner by 8 matches to 6. Other prizes were awarded as follows; Best Stableford score- Steve Warner 32 pts. Best Captain's Pair - Alan Jones and Trevor Hayman Best V.Capt's Pair- VicSmith and Carol Marriner. NTP's: Steve Warner, Christine Gibbons, Trevor Hayman, Ron Gibbons Our next game will be at Altorreal on 17th April , first tee 11.04. Please add your name to the sheet at the La Marina Club. Also a reminder of our Auction night on 29th April. Jimmy Scott has requested that any further items being donated should be taken direct to the La Marina Club from 10.a.m. on the 29th. The food once again provided by Paulo ,Helena and Nicky was muy muy bien. Just a quick reminder of the new FoundersTrophy, donated by Barry Martin ,to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Society's beginnings. This will be at Alenda on 1st May , first tee 0920.
MERINO AND GUERRO SUCCESSFUL ON MURCIA CIRCUIT In the youngest category Carlos Guerrero also won the first stage in the Cordillera de Murcia when he beat the Czeck player Eneko Ríos by 5-3, 3-5, 4-0 and subsequently also taking the second stage which was held at the CTTorre Pacheco defeating Juan Garcia in the final 4-0,4-2. Both players will play in their respective classifications in the third stage and the Masters next week.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. THE POWER OF THE MIND Most amateur golfers think that golf psychology is a load of old ‘mumbo jumbo’ BUT all top professional golfers have access to a psychology coach so why the different approach to this subject? The main reason is that amateurs confuse psychiatry and psychology and there is a big difference because psychiatry deals with mental problems and psychology deals with performance problems. For the majority of people, when we do use our minds it is to focus on something negative rather than positive because we are pre-programmed our gender, family, friends and life’s experiences. We are all surrounded by negative events as depicted in the news and by well meaning family and friends who remind us of things that can go wrong in our lives when we take what they consider to be risks rather than the good things that can happen if we just try something different. The outcome is that we become non-risk takers and our minds become receptive to all things negative. Are our minds really that powerful? - You bet they are because for example you easily forget a good experience from last week but can remember a bad experience from 20 years previous? Let me give you an example of what the mind is capable of. If you can read the following text is your mind strange or just normal? I cdnuolt blveiee that I cluod aulacity uesdnatnrd what I was rdanieg. The phaomneal pweor of the human mind, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy,it dseno’t mtaetr in what oerdr the ltteres in a word are, the only iproamtnt thing is that the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. Yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt! If the human mind can work in such a powerful way with words then just think what it can do with a head full of negative thoughts!!! The good news is that YOU and only YOU are in control of your mind and can choose to think positively and with imagination or negatively with a closed mind. By the way just give a thought for me because the spell checker on my computer has just blown a gasket proof reading this article! We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY - VILLAMARTIN The Hub Sports Bar (Villamartin) kicked off their summer league programme with a visit to the excellent Hacienda Del Alamo course, Fuente Alamo. Despite a 45 minute journey the effort was well worthwhile, the greens 95% recovered from recent hollow tining maintenance and very slick. The Hubbers have 18 events scheduled for the summer up to and including October. Mainly played on a Sunday each outing carries the customary members prizes plus guest prizes sponsored by PJ´s Rentacar, the airport transfer, taxi and rental car company. In parallel with regular event prizes, the Hub Grand Prix competition will be run, inviting members to use their best eight of fifteen games for overall end of season positions. The remaining three outings will be fun days to include Simon Williams´ ever popular captain´s day. Last year´s summer league champion Paul Durrant started off this season with a two point victory over Lee Holtham, Colin Wilson and Dave Letherby on 30 points. Prizes were presented by captain Simon Williams following the excellent buffet, compliments of the captain and business partner Cam McHardy. Durrant and Letherby paired up the following day to contest the Costa Calida golf tour event at the West Course, La Manga and dove tailed brilliantly in the better ball stableford to win the competition by 6 points, their nearest rivals back on 39 points.

TMGS AT LAS RAMBLAS - 2 APRIL One this day in history in 1801, Admiral Horatio Nelson defied an order to withdraw and went on to destroy the Danish fleet and in 1977, probably the greatest steeplechaser of all time, Red Rum, won the Grand National for the 3rd time. Today at the Marmite course we had our 2 Ball Texas Scramble and 15 teams battled it out on a nice warm but cloudy day and it must be said that the course was in very good condition but there were stories of many putts missed. 3 of the 4 NTP’s were claimed and their reward was a sleeve of TMGS golf balls which went to Jenny Morris, Roger Nilsen and Ian Parkinson who will never again shout out to anyone “On me head son” after his playing partner Les Wilton, tried to give Parky a new parting with a sand wedge. Don’t worry readers, Les’s sand wedge is in good working order and wasn’t bent out of shape. The Best Visitors team were husband and wife team Mr and Mrs Lee with a net 73.2 and in the main competition saw Steve Higgins and Paul Fairclough take 3rd place with 74.4, 3 shots behind the runnersup of Teora Roed and John Trehy’s with a reasonable 71.4 but they were a long way back from the winners on the day, Team Campoamor consisting of Joe Dean and Arne Hansson who came in with a very good net score of 67.8. The photo is of the Winning team Player of the Month for March went to Steve Higgins and for that feat;
he received 2 sleeves of balls and a free round of golf at Las Ramblas. Our next game, Wednesday 9th April 2014, see’s us at the La Finca golf course for our Club Championship which will be a Medal competition, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Fixture Secretary on 966719604.

By John O’Brien The competition this week was a 2 ball Greensome, we had 16 players today and with the weather looking promising some good scores were expected. In this format, each member of a team tees off and then select the best drive, after this it becomes alternate play, but each player has to take 9 drives each, easy until the last few holes, then the pressure rises. The results this week were nearest the pin, hole 2 - Keith Smith, Hole 6 Gordon Abba Third place: John O'Brien & George Stanhope, with a nett score of 53 Second place: Martin Rickman & Dave Collins, with a nett score of 52.4 First place: Keith Smith & Gordon Wayne with a nett score of 47 The next competition is on 8th April at El Plantio. Put your name on the list in the club house by Sunday, if you would like to play. Be sure to be there well before 9am on Tuesday. PRICELESS LAST GASP WINNER FOR ELCHE BY JOHN MCGREGOR
ELCHE CF ..........1 GETAFE CF .......0

ust when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes a game like this to remind you you haven’t. Goal-starved Elche and their long-suffering supporters have suffered the last two home matches without a single goal, to give hope to the dream of staying up in the rarefied atmosphere of La Liga in their first season back after 26 years. A glorious warm Sunday evening encouraged 31,101 noisy green and white supporters to almost fill the mighty Martinez Valero stadium, includong a couple of hundred blue-clad Getafe fans high up in the visitors stand. With Getafe a point behind and both teams just above the relegation zone this was more a daren’t-lose game rather than a must-win. Club captain and talisman Edu Albacar was still out injured so Cisma ably deputised, with Carlos ‘The Rock’ Sanchez preferred in midfield to Javi Marquez, otherwise Elche at full strength. New boy Rodriguez almost got Elche off to a dream start as he cut in from the left but his low cross rolled harmlessly across the Getafe goal with no-one to put
it in. Back came the visitors to hit the post with a soft shot on 10 minutes, but it was the Franjiverdes who were enjoying the most of the first half, Sanchez driving just wide and having a dubious penalty denied as Coro went down theatrically in the box just before half time. In the second half Elche kept up the pressure, and with the crowd became increasingly impatient Elche coach Fran Escriba predictably rang the changes using all three substitutes, the one mattering most being the Ghanian striker Boakye for local hero Herrera. With the crowd roaring Elche on, the game went into added time with three minutes shown. After a hold-up for a Getafe injury, and everyone settling for yet another Elche home goalless draw the ball was crossed high from the right into the Getafe area where the away team had always looked so secure. But there was Boakye, all alone who effortlessly guided his header safely into the net to be mobbed by his teammates, and send everyone connected with the City of Palms home in ectstacy. It’s not over yet: next weekend Elche travel to neighbours Valencia, and have some difficult games (Athletico, Barcelona…) in the run in to the end of this amazing season. But just for now: priceless… Mucho Elche!
Boakye had the last laugh by scoring the winner.................Photo: KEVIN RENDALL

TORRY BOUNCE BACK TO UPSET LEAGUE LEADERS CD ELDENSE 0 FC TORREVIEJA 2 A welcome return to winning ways for FC Torrevieja at Eldense on Saturday following the disappointment of their draw with Cullera the previous weekend after concedeng 3 goals in the last 7 minutes. This was a game in which they dominated the league leaders for long periods and were duly rewarded with two first half goals from Obele and Carrasco. Obele hit the back of the net with a powerful header on 24 minutes with Carrasco adding a 2nd just 3 minutes later and whilst the playoffs are still mathmatically possible Anselmo will no doubt be concentrating more on consolidation but with one eye firmly on next season. Next up for Torry a midweek fixture, Wednesday evening at the Vicente Garcia against Ribarroja kicking off at 6pm.
CF MIL PALMERAS ROUNDUP Junior Strikers 6 Mil Palmeras 0 CF Mil Palmeras Benjamines sponsored by Sunshine FM After an impressive run of form Mil Palmeras came to a halt against Juniors, with an underpar performance on a blustery morning. With the toros without 3 first choice players through illness and injury they were forced to soldier on with what they had. Add to this the fact that several players had a very bad morning and the writing was on the wall.Although not to take anything away from the opposition who played some nice football but every chance they had seemed to find the net it was one of those games.Nevertheless Garry, Millie. Lacey and Dylan worked hard to keep going, and Mason,Alejandro,Lucas,Jonathan and Joshua. tried their best on a difficult day. With the toros pushing forward to try and get a foothold in the game we were wide open at the back and this im afraid reflected in the scoreline.Nevermind we will have better days than this. Man of the match Lacey Bradley good return to form. LEAGUE CUP SEMIFINAL SECOND LEG Mil Palmeras Alevines 4 La Aparecida 6 Sponsored by Talleres J Martinez Ford garage, After a 9-0 drubbing in the first leg away at La Aparecida this really was an uphill battle. But the neversay die attitude of the toros showed through again. With everyone expecting more of the same the toros suprised evryone including the opposition with a full power performance that really deserved a win nevermind a close fought defeat. With every player in a red shirt putting their all in this combined to make the game a real cracker. Full time 4-6 man of the match Mingus Akermann.
EMILIANO RETAINS SPANISH CROWN WITH 5TH ROUND K.O. BY NICK IRELAND Emiliano Casal retained his Spanish Lightweight belt in style on Friday night with a fifth round TKO. It was a clear and resounding victory to mark a return of Boxing to Torrevieja after an absence of over seven years. Emiliano dominated the fight in an evening of seven contests held in the ‘Cecilio Gallego Pavillion’. Torrevejense boxer Emiliano Casal was defending his title against disputed title contender Andoni Alonso, who confidently replaced original contender King Daluz for the National Championship at ‘Lightweight’. From the opening bell, Casal took command of the centre of the ring to effectively launch his strong left jab at his opponent, who he easily outreached by several inches. Growing in confidence, in the second round, a dominant Casal began putting his combinations together causing Alonso to hit the floor and take his first eight count from Majorcan referee Oliver Palomo. The supremacy of Casal, who had returned to Torrevieja to appear in his adopted homeland after seven years absence, increased in the third with the right eye of Alonso becoming inflamed, needing major attention from his corner at the end of the round. In the fourth, the difference was becoming increasing noticeable, as the noise in the pavilion rose to edge Casal on towards victory, with Casal dropping Alonso for the second time after a powerful right cross With Alonso beginning to tire and the champion looking ever more dominant, Casal continued his harassment on his opponent's eye, with Alonso again losing his balance and now being unable to see, hitting the floor for the third time. At 1:10 of the fifth round, the referee
declared a TKO against Alonso giving Casal his second defence of his title. Among those attending was the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon , accompanied by councillors Luis María Pizana, Agustina Esteve and former Olympic speed walking champion Daniel Plaza. Along with five three round Amateur fights, there was another professional bout at heavyweight between local boxer Magomed Azuev ‘Moja’, who won with a second round TKO against Slovakian opponent Gabriel Jazsai. After throwing a punch at Moja, Jazsai pulled up in pain, after damaging his hand and had to retire. Moja took his win gracefully and apologised to everyone that the fight was cut short. The very International mix of fans from all factions of the local community also enjoyed five amateur bouts of three rounds each with fighters from Norway, Ireland, Britain, Murcia, Elche, Alicante and Torrevieja all competing. Emiliano thanked everyone for the support he had received, from his own boxing team, sponsors, the Town Hall and especially all the supporters who enjoyed the return of top class boxing to Torrevieja. Meanwhile the management of local light heavyweight Ricky Pow have also been busy with confirmation that he will fight the Spanish Champion Gabriel Campillo on 9 May in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. The fight will be the main supporting bout on a card that features the European Welterweight title contest between Ceferino Rodriguez against Frenchman Ismael El Massoudi. A win for Pow will once again get his title aspirations back on track and put him firmly back in the European mix.
