AIRPORT BOOST FROM DIRECTOR GENERAL OF CIVIL AVIATION

As Ryanair adds another route to its Murcia - San Javier catalogue, twice weekly flights to and from the Dutch city of Eindhoven, we seem to be none the wiser about the long term future of the Costa’s favourite small airport.

However a meeting which took place at the airport last week, presided over by the Director General of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Development, Angel Luis Arias, may at last provide some concrete evidence that the Aviation Authorities in Spain, after millions of wasted euros on the deserted Corvera project, are finally coming to their senses.

Arias was in San Javier to chair the Murcia Airport Coordination Committee, the main purpose of which is to drive Airport air traffic to the region.

During the gathering, members, including representatives of the Ministry of Public

Works, AENA, the Regional and local councils, scrutinized a study of the current status of the airfield which Arias said would serve as a starting point for the development of new measures to encourage air traffic into the airport and boost airport activity A number of Airport coordination Committees were established at the meeting, the aim of which is to determine future measures that will ensure fiscal stability and promote the competitiveness of San Javier-Murcia within the airport sector.

They will establish and then promote the actions necessary to strengthen air connectivity through the establishment and promotion of new airlines , on both international and domestic routes.

Airport Director Paul Melgar said that these changes are intended to strengthen the management organization at the airport and enable it to “meet and overcome" the many challenges that it will face in repairing the damage done to it’s operations in recent years.

Continued from Page 1 Meanwhile as San Javier – Murcia seems to be making the right sorts of move to re-establish it’s position within the sector, troubles continue to beleaguer the operation at Corvera, the latest of which is the threat of the Association of Expropriated Landowners to take their fight for compensation, following the sale of their land, to Brussels.

Luis Hernández, Secretary of the board of the Association said that the group, which includes about 150 local landowners and farmers, has requested a meeting with the European Ombudsman.

He explained that, despite meeting with local and Regional Politicians, the Corvera airport developer has so far failed to meet the prices that were agreed when the land was first procured. “Promises have not been fulfilled” he said.

The situation began over six years ago. According to Hernandez, the price for land was set by the developer at a rate well below that provided by the Community, but nevertheless, there was a 90%

agreement. He recalled that the dealership offered his group of expropriated landowners about 3 euros per square metre, compared with 11-15 euros for those owners who were compensated by the Government.

Given this difference, many of those affected decided to take their case to court, but after six years they are still awaiting a decision. "Some families are managing badly because the farms that were expropriated were their livelihood," he said.

"The courts are so very slow and we continue to wonder just how much we are going to get when the matter is finally resolved, but more importantly, who is going to pay if the airport fails to open.

With this concern, all the affected landowners gathered at the Civic Center in Murcia Valladolises last week to decide the approach they will now make to the European Ombudsman in Brussels.

Earlier, the Regional Assembly, had said that the price of any compensation for the expropriated land must be the same "as that paid for similar land elsewhere."

KEEPING IT IN THE FA MILY The Art Competition at Quesada Country Club was a fun event with over 90 paintings and photographs on show - many congratulations to the winners - Eileen Honey, Jane Woods and Janis Ware with first second and third in beginners, James Bell with first and third in Intermediates with Jackie Nevin taking second place - Jackie also won joint second in the September 2013 competition and in the advanced class.

Keeping it in the family, Nicola Moran took first and second place with Suzanne Stokes winning third place - Nicola's dad Ron Harrison was a winner at the last competition at QCC in September 2013. Artists have already asked when the next competition will be and several

people have put forward ideas and suggestions for the next one.

We were privileged to have Patricia Creighton M.B.E. who is also a Lady Toastmaster and "Lady" Chatterley - Joanna Chatterley who has been involved in arts and culture for over 20 years as our judges.

Susanne Sayers an art teacher herself and the person who is always my curator and I have decided that the next competition will be "open" and will not be sectioned off into years of experience.

However there will be one exception in that there will be a section for people who really picked up an art brush, pencil or crayon for the very first time recently since they left school!!

NEW FASTER BIKES FOR THE GUARDIA

A new breed of Guardia Civil motorbikes are set to hit the streets, with the traditional BMW 1200 RT being replaced by a more powerful Yamaha FJR 1300.

The FJR 1300 has a 1,298 cc inline-four liquid-cooled, DOHC, four valves per cylinder, electronic fuel injection engine, offering 141.5 hp. The bike under normal conditions has a top speed of around 240 kilometres per hour, although is considered fuel efficient under normal road speed conditions.

The BMW R1200RT was first introduced in 2005 to replace the R1150RT model and features a 1,170 cc flat-twin engine with a six-speed gearbox, with just 109 hp and a top speed of around 200 kilometres

per hour.

The new bike has been gradually introduced in a few choice areas of the country, in order to test the vehicle under normal operational conditions, and will continue to roll out throughout the country shortly.

GERMANY TO SEND UNEMPLOYED SPANIARDS HOME Is Germany set to follow in the footsteps of it’s it’s near neighbour Belgium?

There are currently 10,000 Spaniards claiming benefits in Germany, and with the country about to follow in the footsteps of near neighbours Switzerland and Belgium, in announcing new legislation that will limit the numbers of EU migrants, they will almost certainly face expulsion.

Last year, according to recent reports in El Mundo newspaper, Belgium expelled 291 Spaniards who were claiming unemployment benefits. After Bulgarians and Romanians, this would make them the third largest group of EU Migrants sent home. In total the group numbered over 2750 people all of whom were labeled as an “excessive burden on the country’s social security system”.

Germany has been looking at the procedure, and the legislation surrounding it, in some detail and for some time, and it would now seem that similar rules are to be implemented by the country with Europe’s strongest economy, where the Chancellor Angela Merkel has already announced that EU job migrants who haven’t signed a job contract after six months in the country will also be given their marching orders.

This will mean that over 10,000 Spaniards in receipt of unemployment benefit in Germany, a number that has risen by almost 50% in the last three years, now face being stripped of their ability to operate freely within the country.

At the end of 2013, 59,241 Spanish nationals in

Germany had a job while 6,592 didn’t and of the number who were working there was approximately 7,027 who were not paying contributions.

Currently, the situation for those EU Nationals in Belgium who are claiming long term unemployment benefit is that, rather than being sent back to their countries of origin, they are stripped of all benefits including education and health and neither are they allowed to sign a rental agreement.

EU law allows the implementation of such procedures because it already states that citizens from one member country can’t live in another for more than 3 months unless they are studying, are in employment or have sufficient funds and means so as to ensure that they are not a burden to that country.

Rather belatedly the UK would also seem to be looking at similar legislation beginning with people who are found to be begging or sleeping rough who are threatened with deportation.

The UK Prime Minister said that immigration would be curbed at 75,000 annually and that EU Migrants must be able to prove that they earn a minimum wage of 150 pounds a week or a job ‘with prospects’ if they are to be able to claim social subsidies.

In 2013 there were over 50,000 Spanish workers registered with Britain’s Social Security system, an annual rise of over 36 percent and more than from any other country except Poland.

GRAVE CONCERNS RAISED OVER TORREVIEJA AND LA MATA BIRD NUMBERS s the potentially devastating impact of environmental abuses start to unfold, with meteorologists warning how the climate of the Mediterranean coast could be transformed in a matter of decades, and concerns over the environmental damage caused by increased building grows, the reality of change is seemingly occurring faster than might even have been hoped.

This week alone, the water levels of the Laguna de La Mata, within the Natural Park of La Mata and Torrevieja, have risen significantly.

Not a fact noted by scientists or local governments, but a fact noted in the real changes that have occurred as observed by a group of bird watchers who regularly monitor the activities in the reserve.

The group have noted that two natural islands have disappeared, swallowed up by the increased water levels, which has resulted in a reduction in land and, as such, two types of birds who would be breeding in the area, the Satin and Black Tern, being nowhere to be found. These birds typically nest no more than two metres from the shore and so, with the disappearance of the islands, the available shoreline has also significantly reduced.

Other bird species such as the avocets, picofinas gulls and especially Kentish have also seen their breeding populations declining sharply in recent years and are of a great concern due to the work that those birds do for the remaining ecosystem.

In February of this year, the Izquierda Unida group of Torrevieja demanded that the ruling PP government provide an immediate solution to the lack of staff in the Natural Park of Torrevieja and La Mata, and criticised the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, for not defending the environmental heritage of the village.

Víctor Ferrández, local coordinator of Izquierda Unida, says that as the chairman of the Governing Board of the Natural Park of Las Lagunas de Torrevieja and La Mata, Dolón is “obligated” to defend the environmental areas against the actions of the ministry, after the company contracted to look after the area, VAERSA, filed for redundancy of its workers, resulting in a quarter of its workforce being made redundant. This resulted in the dismissal of three of the four technicians who operated in the area of the Salinas, a guide, a biologist and an expert in environmental sciences.

The regional authority commented that t h e water increase was only temporary, due to the opening of the water flow channels into the lakes, and claim that his has “not affected the two artificial islands”, despite the fact they are clearly not visible, and that the flow is “good for the park”, but offering no obvious explanation as to the impact that it has had on the reduction in bird numbers already. The water is expected to recede within the next few days.

Meanwhile, normally actively involved in the protection of the environment, and vocal in their campaign thereof, the Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja has called upon the town hall to take action to destroy an element seen as crucial by other environmentalists.

The Los Verdes have approached the Mayor of Torrevieja asking that the protocol for eradicating mosquitoes in the area be implemented sooner than planned, as they are “haunting the people living on developments located in the vicinity of the lagoons”.

As mosquitoes provide a food for many different birds, this is seen as a surprise move for an environmentally concerned group, especially given the reported sharp decline in the number of bird families seen nesting in the salt lakes this year.

The greens see the “discomfort caused by the presence of these annoying insects” as a more important factor than the role they play in the ecosystem, where properties have been built on land where the insects would normally be allowed to develop naturally.

The greens are insisting on the need to “undertake a preventive policy in eradicating insects”, before the problem occurs, calling once more for a monitoring procedure for the elimination of insects and rodents, which they want to be active for the whole year.

The hopes of the group now seemingly switching their focus on protecting the comfort of tourists and residents over the environmental matters is to prevent “unpleasant vacation periods caused by mosquito bites, with consequential discomfort, inconvenience, pharmacy visits and assistance with medical emergencies, etc”.

ORIHUELA NEWS - PREPARING FOR AN INFLUX OF TOURISTS The president of the local group of the Partido Popular in Orihuela, Pepa Ferrando, has been given the 15th of May as the date in which she must appear in court facing charges of corruption in relation to the FITUR tourism event. Persistently protesting her innocence in any wrong doing, Ferrando said that the complaint filed against he is “categorically false and politicized”, when faced with the allegations that a number of contracts were split to enable then to be allocated to companies without being put to public tender.

Facing criticism from the opposition groups over calls from the Valencian government to submit details about Cala Mosca before the consultation period ends, the councillor for town planning, Antonio Zapata, has confirmed that the plans for presenting the data are continuing on schedule and will in fact be submitted well within the anticipated deadline, with an exhibition of the findings of the environmental impact report being put on exhibition within a matter of weeks.

Meanwhile, Pedro Mancebo of the CLR political group has called for a “euro by euro” account of the expenses involved in the trip to Brussels where a government delegation firmly secured the interest of the European Union into their next term of office.

The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martínez, launched the latest collection of guided tourist routes this week, to coincide with the influx of tourists during the Easter period. The aim of the tours is

to “complement the processions with other activities”, and are seen to be of International tourist interest. The benefits of property in the Alicante and Murcia provinces will be highlighted in the Orihuela Costa this week, when the “Costa Live 2014” exhibition comes to the Zenia Boulevard from the 15th to the 17th of April. Around a dozen estate agents and promoters will be showcasing their portfolios at the event, after it was revealed that 29% of all foreign property purchases in Spain are in this area. Aimed at targeting potential buyers from the British and Russian markets, the timing of the event is during the Easter holidays, when many people are expected to visit the shopping centre, tapping into a share of the 60.6 million international tourists who visited Spain in 2013, making the country the third most popular tourist destination in the world, after the U.S. and France.

Orihuela town hall has this week seen a favourable judgment by the courts worth 247,109 euro, after a resolution was agreed on a municipal plot awarded to a company last summer, to a company that has not filed and verified the required documentation, thus forfeiting their provisional bond. The town hall has also announce the resolution of six cases of urban infraction, three of which have resulted in the demolition of unlicensed works and two with penalties for urban infringements of 600 and 909 euro. However, it´s not all good news, as the government has been forced to pay 3,312 euro of interest after late payment in a separate case.

EUROPEAN ELECTIONS WILL SHARE 56,000 FOREIGN VOTES IN ALICANTE nternational residents registered to vote in Spain for the upcoming European elections total 336,586 people, according to the data released by the Institute of National Statistics.

In total, more than 36.5 million people over 18 are registered on the electoral roll in Spain, of which 34.49 million are Spaniards living in Spain and 1.72 million are Spaniards living abroad, to which the 336,586 Europeans residing in Spain must be added.

Of the foreign voters living in Spain, the British lead the way, with a total of 82,000 people having registered. In second place are residents from Romania, with 76,000 voters. Next are Italians,

although some way behind, with 36,760 voters, there are 35,529 Germans, 26,903 French, 16,771 from Portugal and 13,099 from Bulgaria. The numbers then start to diminish considerably, with some other notable figures being 3,564 Irish voters, but just 36 from Malta and 23 from Cyprus.

The data also reveals that Alicante is the province with the largest number and proportion of foreign voters, with more than 56,000 people having registered, some 4.35% of the total provincial census. In the build up to the electoral registration process, the Diputación de Alicante had been involved in a series of tours, guides and interactive websites to try to encourage and assist foreign voters in Spain.

However, in the 2013 census, Torrevieja alone recorded 58,418 foreign residents, and Orihuela had 39,239, collectively having nearly 100,000 foreigners living in these two places alone, almost a fifth of the 506,062 registered foreign residents of the Alicante province. Just 56,000 of that half a million have expressed an intention to exercise a right to vote in Spain, bearing in mind that a number of those international residents will not be of European origin.

Behind Alicante, in relative terms are Málaga , Castellón, Almería and the Balearic Islands, although Madrid is the second province with the highest number of foreigners registered on the electoral roll, with more than 44,700, followed by Málaga with 31,237, and Barcelona, with just under 30,000.

CARREFOUR STAFF WIN SUNDAY WORKING BATTLE

French owned supermarket chain Carrefour has been dealt a legal blow this week, one which recognises and supports the rights of workers and their conditions.

Following the liberalisation of shopping hours in Madrid in June 2012, the chain made the decision to open on Sundays and holidays, but apparently failed to negotiate a change in terms and conditions of the workers who would be expected to give up their time off in order to cover the extension in opening hours.

The Labour Chamber of the High Court of Justice of Madrid considered in judgement that that the company had increased the number of Sundays and holidays on which the staff had to work. In fact, according to the unions representing the staff, this changed the number of days from 22 to 63, which were originally classed as holidays, resulting in “a significant change in the working

conditions of those affected”, which exceeded the “forecasts of the agreement”, and was therefore not adequately negotiated, according to the ruling.

Carrefour was not authorized by law to enforce such a unilateral “momentous change to family life” of its workers “as it required them to work more Sundays a year” than was part of the original conditions prior to the 2012 change in opening times.

CYBERCAFES TO BE FORCED TO COLLECT USER IDENTIFICATIONS nder new public security laws working their way through the Spanish parliament, anybody wishing to use a public internet terminal, such as in a bar, shop or cybercafé, would have to provide identification papers, and the business record the details for submission to the authorities.

The new Orgánica de Protección de la Seguridad Ciudadana, is set to modify the laws introduced by the socialist government in 1992, based on the significant changes that telecommunications and internet services have undergone in the last 22 years.

In the original draft, approved in November of last year by the cabinet, is now heading towards its final stages of becoming law.

Although legislation was already in place for controlling identity to those who access the internet, cybercafés and the likes were not included in the legislation before this reform. Now, companies who fail to adequately document the details of those who use their services, could face fines of between 1,001 euro and 30,000 euro, as it would be classed as a serious administrative offence.

Under the new law, the owners of these businesses will be required to photocopy or scan the ID of a

client or an equivalent document and store that information so it can be accessed at any time by the competent administrative authorities, such as the Ministry of Interior, Government delegations or the security services.

The users of the internet services are not mentioned directly by the law, with the responsibility clearly given to the business owners, but it will also be a consideration that shops can prohibit access to their internet connections to those customers who have not shown their ID. However, on element that has been dropped by the latest draft involved the requirement for any user of public wifi networks to also provide identifying data. In the original draft, this was also set to become mandatory, but has been removed on the recommendation of the Ministry of industry, Trade and Tourism.

Data protection issues have now been raised as to what businesses do with the information collated, with the next stage of the legislation being the discussion and review of elements brought into question, although the requirement to provide the data is believed to be one part which the government are not prepared to negotiate on.

ILLEGAL TRANSMITTER TO BE REMOVED IN EL CHAPARRAL he Planning Department of Torrevieja town hall has ordered Telefónica to remove an antenna which is located on a green area of the Urbanization El ChaparralLa Siesta, which does not have the appropriate licences in place for its location.

This is seen as the first major development in a campaign to clamp down on illegally placed transmitters, and is located in the same compound as two others, in an area close to a medical centre, park land and urban development.

Classed as an urban infraction, those responsible for the placing of such structures are liable to a fine if no action is taken, and could see the structure dismantled by the town hall.

The file in this case was opened in April 2013, and may well pave the way to other actions both in Torrevieja and Orihuela, both of whom have expressed an intention to deal with the illegally placing of telecommunication and radio equipment.

TORREVIEJA POLICE DEFEND THEIR LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES

T

he announcement by Torrevieja town hall that they intend to hold an internal investigation as to why the local police have started fining businesses for urban infractions, as well as drivers for illegal parking, was not only met with surprise, but the local police themselves are questioning the integrity of the councillors, given the fact that the town hall is not paying similar attention to documents and information which has gone missing in previous cases.

As the police started a more focussed campaign reporting bars and restaurants for invading public spaces such as roads and pavements, many complained over the fact that the fines had been issued.

The town hall responded by launching an internal investigation, resulting in many more people asking why the police are being questioned for enforcing the law now, when the question ought to be why it has taken them so long to deal with illegal activities.

Now, as three officers are summoned before the courts to testify in a case where documents relating

to a number of fines have gone missing, officers are asking why the councillor now responsible for the police, Agustina Esteve, is questioning officers responsible for compliance, but not investigating how these other fines have been issued, and are asking the police to simply turn a blind eye.

As previously reported, this case, brought by the officers in November of 2013, refers to an incident from 2011, when three officers were surprised by a passenger car which failed to observe a stop signal.

The officers stopped the vehicle and were faced with an “uncooperative” driver, finally issuing a fine, but later discovering that whilst in contact with the Suma office in Torrevieja, they had no record of its existence.

A representative for the officers who have brought the case to court described the situation as “regrettable” that they have to take such action through the courts to investigate such cases of potential corruption, but also point out that they have a job to do in enforcing compliance with the law and those laws do not allow them to be selective as to which they enforce or not.

The Case of the Ex ploding Shoes Expats often write to tell me of the many and varied experiences that they face when beginning a new life in the sun.

Often it is about their frustrations and misunderstandings with town halls, lawyers, as well as a lack of a decent Internet connection that prompts readers to write to me.

However, a message from a reader living in the Costa Blanca a few weeks ago did intrigue me.

It was a message from an established expat; a lady called Joan. One day, Joan decided to tidy the section of their wardrobe that belonged to her husband, Colin. He was a bit of a hoarder and had kept a pair of smart, expensive leather shoes that he had bought for work in the UK some ten years earlier. He thought that they might come in useful for weddings and funerals, but had never worn them since the couple left the UK. As he was out playing golf, Joan thought it was an ideal opportunity to lose them, and gain a little more space for herself.

As Joan picked up one of the shoes, the shoe exploded and spread a cloud of fine dust over her, the wardrobe and the bedroom. Needless to say, Joan was shocked; the same thing happened when she picked up the second shoe. It appears that the entire heel and sole of both shoes had completely disintegrated with age and the heat.

Joan’s email reminded me of a warning that I gave a few weeks ago about the deterioration of rubber in car tyres, and was the reason why tyres should be changed every six years, regardless of the amount of tread remaining. The sun and heat causes rubber related products to deteriorate very quickly, and in the case of tyres, become very dangerous. I replied briefly to Joan, and gave the issue no more thought until this week.

A few days ago, I discovered a pair of trainers that I had bought some

time ago in a sale. They were a highly reputable, and usually expensive, brand, which had been for sale at a price that I could not resist. I remember immediately regretting buying them when I got home, as there were a little too tight for me, and so they had remained in a wardrobe in the vague hope that they may fit when the weather became cooler.

As we had a cool spell, I decided that now was the time, and I put the trainers on to take Bella, our dog, for a walk. I managed to walk just a hundred metres from our home, when there was strange squelching sound, and I found myself sinking gently to the ground. Bella fled down the path with both horror and embarrassment. Yes, you guessed; one of my trainers had exploded, leaving a cloud of fine white granules spread all over the road. It was a weird and unsettling experience, and as I turned to return home before anyone witnessed my predicament, the second trainer burst, leaving another cloud of dust and the bottom of the shoe on the road.

It was as I was hopping home that a neighbour caught me. Don’t these meetings always happen at a bad time? After initial greetings, he commented that I look troubled, and was everything OK? Had I hurt myself, he asked kindly, as he had noticed that I had developed a rather serious limp. I thanked him, and did my best to muster up as much dignity as possible as I struggled down the road to our gate, with only the top of the trainers covering my feet.

Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident.

Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible.

Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m.

If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive.

NEW INFORMATIVE ROAD SIGNS BEING INTRODUCED IN SPAIN In addition to the changes in laws for driving in Spain, the Ministry of Public Works has announced new road signs that will be appearing throughout the network, promising more information to drivers relating to everything from directions, fuel stations, curves and transport links.

However, some of these signs may not appear anytime soon, as many of the new signs will only be put in place when the current signs are considered in need of repair or replacement, with the exception being those that are considered to be safety critical, such as warning of sharp curves or other road features, as indicated in the publication of the official state notice this week.

Another safety element being introduced on more Spanish roads is distance separation chevrons, already widely used in countries such as France and Portugal, as well as in places in the UK, which have already been painted on the A-42 road in Getafe, Madrid. Designed to reduce rear-end collisions by indicating the minimum distance required between vehicles, with the number of chevrons depending on the speed of the vehicles. As well as main roads, these features will also start to appear in various tunnels on the road network, with 85 kilometres of road being covered in 24 Spanish provinces.

Some roundabouts will also see new information signs displayed, using pictograms to indicate the direction of exit from the roundabout, although quite whether this will lead to a simpler process for drivers will remain to be seen, given the current different practices adopted by native Spanish drivers and those who come from international destinations, both of whom are trained differently, often leading to utter confusion during one of the most crucial times of leaving a main road at an intersection.

As World Parkinson's Day was commemorated on the 11th of April, new data reveals that about 150,000 people in Spain are affected by the condition, with around 10,000 new cases each year, making it the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer´s.

María Jesús Delgado, the president of the Spanish Parkinson´s Federation, explained how the condition not only directly affects those who suffer from the disease, but also their families, with both social and medicinal elements having to be taken into consideration. “Parkinson´s is a great unknown and is associated with increased tremor, that is the general image in society”, Delgado explains, “but it is neither one nor the other”.

“To break the myths and prejudices of the disease, we provide training and information”, says Delgado, who reports that the tremor is one of the symptoms, but not always, as there are also others, such as depression.

Perhaps another fact which is unknown is that one in five patients are under 50 years of age, with early-

onset diagnosis only occurring after the age of 35.

The campaign this year to mark the day was accompanied by the slogan “Every superhero needs a superpartner”, recognising the solidarity needed to combat the condition, as, “The Super Hero is sick, and the idea we all have a superpartner, management, public and private companies, families, caregivers, associations is key”, Delgado explains.

Research is one of the great centres of hope for sufferers of Parkinson´s, as “although the cause of the disease is unknown, there are several lines of research which are encouraging, including vaccines, new treatments, etc. IN fact, I think we will soon discover its origin”, she continued.

Parkinson's occurs when nerve cells in the brain stop producing a substance called dopamine, but the reason that happens is unknown. Treatments allow patients to live with this disease for up to 40 years with a good quality of life for the first 15, before the effects of the medication start to take its toll; and are used in conjunction with essential rehabilitation therapy including physical therapy, speech therapy, music therapy and psychological support.

NO PLANS TO INCREASE ALCOHOL AGE The Spanish government´s drug tsar, Francisco Babín, has this week said that there are no plans to raise the current legal age limit for alcohol consumption, despite the increased concern of alcohol abuse in younger people, and medical evidence that the young brain does not stop maturing until the age of 20, and so, alcohol consumption before this age is even more harmful than those who are older.

The reason for the decision is that the government don´t feel that raising the age would solve the problem, as most young

people who responded to a survey in 2012 to 2013, revealed that despite the current age limit of 18, most young people actually start to consume alcohol at around 13.

According to Babín, a School Survey on Drug Use in Secondary School Students, known as ESTUDES, reflected the actual age of alcohol consumption is at 13.9 years, or 4 years earlier than legally allowed, and therefore cannot see how raising the permitted age would make a difference when the rules are already being ignored.

Therefore, the government delegate has opposed the bill prepared by the health department

under the head of Minister Ana Mato, suggesting the increase in the permitted age, as it is “no use to fix ages given the evidence, which I do not deny, if the current rules are not met”.

Instead, the Government's objective is to “harmonize” the legal drinking age in Spain and “increase the risk perception” of alcohol consumption amongst young people, similar to that of other banned substances such as drugs, with the aim for education people to a “zero” rate of consumption, although, in reality, many Spanish schools also suffer problems with illegal drug use at the moment.

The announcement was made during a talk given by the DIANOVA group, which aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drinking and drugs in young people. The initiative, present in eleven countries, runs until the end of the school year, in June.

The campaign sees posters and information leaflets distributed throughout the school network, along with four informative films, each featuring a different element of abuse, such as one person addicted to cocaine, another to alcohol, a young boy smoking cannabis and a woman taking anxiolytics.

“Our intention is to show the reality but also give a message of hope to consumers conveying the idea that you can get out of these addictions. Moreover, our aim is to also perform preventive work to avoid treatment costs”, according to the spokesperson for DIANOVA, Santos M. Cavero.

mals. In this episode, Paul visits Cheetah Outreach, a sanctuary near Cape Town where he learns more about the work they do and gets close to an adult cheetah called Joseph. Joseph is being reared in captivity to breed and prevent the species from becoming extinct. Next, Paul returns to Moholoholo, an animal rehab centre near Kruger National Park. Here he meets a black rhino calf called Ollie and his keeper Jamie. Together they take Ollie for a mud bath, but the youngster is just not in the mood! At the Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education (C.A.R.E) Baboon Sanctuary, Paul is introduced to baby baboon Tiny Tim. Tim has been hand-reared but is about to be released into the wild where it is hoped he will be accepted by and join a new troop. Then Paul returns to the Lilayi Elephant Nursery, where he gets to spend more time with his favourite elephant Nkala.

SQUALOS TOO STRONG FOR YECLA Los Squalos 68 Yecla 24 Even missing five key players, Squalos proved much too strong for the young and inexperienced visitors from the north of Murcia. However, due credit must go to the Yecla players, who kept trying right to the end. It was a game in which the Squalos demonstrated the improvement made this year pitted against a willing and enthusiastic set of younger players.

It took only two minutes for Juama to open the scoring with a try for No.8, Alex, “Brassos” to kick the first of his nine conversions. He also scored three tries. Juama added his second try and other scorers were tight head prop, Juan “OSO” (2); Wagener (2); loose head prop, Juandi (1). For Yecla the try scorers were Mad (1); Juan Luis (1) Alejandro (2) and Carlos Amor’s (1). Centre, Alejandro, also kicked two try conversions.

If Squalos win next week away to UCM at Murcia, they have to wait and see how Cartagena do as they have a game in hand and are just one point behind. Squalos have led the league all season, which is no mean achievement for a young developing team. However looking ahead to next season, coach, Ian Morrison, hopes to attract at least eight more players that will strengthen the squad. With more experienced players, Los Squalos, should be able to compete against the stronger teams. That is something they must do to continue their improvement.

Not everyone that would grace the final stages got through, notably Mark Filer, former finalist who went out to Meerkat Alex Nikolov in a real ding dong match. Another Buster currently performing well Paul Dowinton, had two comfortable wins before facing Lee Maiden in a tentative game, both under-performing. Anyone of the last 8 could win the singles and it will certainly depend on the draw, but Walker and Abrams will be the ones to avoid in the quarters.

Its probably the best last 8 in six years, including the likes of Mark Farmer and Sam Salt both previous winners of the prestigious trophy, just look at the facts. Abrams and Walker are currently 1st and 2nd respectively in the Exite Radio Merit Table. Lee Maiden holds the League´s shortest leg of 501 in 14 darts. Alex Nikolov has the League´s highest finish to date with a magnificent 141 out. Sid Cross has amassed a healthy 4 maximums this term and is jointly leading this category even after missing 25% of matches. The remaining three Wood, Linton and Eyre have all played significant roles for their respective teams and will be no push-overs. Try and pick the winner and runner-up from that lot, its almost impossible.

One big surprise in the girls competition was the early elimination of Busters Shirley Roberts. She did however have some consolation in the knowledge of going out to eventual qualifier Simone de Lacey, the delectable Honey who didn’t drop a leg on her way to qualification and the semis. She will be joined by Yvonne Rouffignac from the Porterhouse who herself didn’t drop a leg during the evening at Hattons. They will be joined by the Pint Depot venue winners, the ever smiling Leah Chesworth and Queen Marie Dunne. Both performed well to qualify with several three figure scores. One match at the Pint Depot lasted a little longer than anticipated, enough to say that Phil Taylor would have been 5 sets up in a world championship final by the time the leg was concluded. The participants names are a secret and will remain that way unless …..

I had the pleasure of not competing in the singles this term but organising the venue down at La Zenia´s Gogarty´s. A fact not lost on Que Pasa´s Jim Storey who quipped ¨shame the other Meerkats didn’t take the hint¨. Meant and taken with the humour the old boy intended. The elder statesman gave a good account of himself on the board going out on a nice 116 (T20,S20,D18) but it wasn’t enough against the ever youthful Joe Hawkins who took out the other two legs on D20 and D10. The Hunk then faced George Caine who had earlier won his match 2-0 against Steph Ralphs. The Madigans man struggled a little in his second game and went out 2 straight on D16 and D11 leaving Hawkins to play Abrams who had made his way through George Mint 100 and Steve Cox both 2-0, hitting 5 tons or more on the way. The Hunk had the opportunity of taking the match to 3 legs but didn’t take it as D4 and D8 sewed up the match accompanied by 4 more tons from the Meerkat. The draw, conducted by Michelle Caine, was kind to the Merit Table toppers, John Walker drawn in the opposite half to Abrams. The Que Pasa man unexpectedly wobbled a little playing the competent Tavener Ivan Jones. It took 3 legs and 2 tons to dispose of the unlucky Jones. Walker´s opponent to qualify was another Tavener, Mike Snow. A below par Lee Holtham had previously succumbed to Snowy 2-1, the winner hitting D16,D2 coupled with 134,121,120.

However, he didn’t perform quite as well against Walker, as the Eagle reeled off a comfortable 20 dart first leg which should have been 17, including 2 tons followed by 2 more and D6 to qualify with the Meerkat.

At Busters 3 Meerkats figured in the line up two of them making the finals, Lee Maiden and John Eyre, my recent Monday League KO Pairs winning partner. In fact Eyre beat old friend and Kats captain Derek Kingsbury 2-1 to get through but going 1 down on D14 after Kingsbury had hit a 135. The veteran Eyre came straight back though with 100,105 and D10 in the second and then 140,D2 for the match.

Meanwhile Maiden made short work of Hyenas captain Simon Williams, with D16 and D10 without much response from his opposite number. His next match was far more difficult, Buster Paul Dowinton who has been playing steadily all season contributing to his team´s cup final appearance on May 15th. Two 2-0 victories, the first a clinical demolition of Brett Badlove and then a tougher match against the useful Matt Cummins, had to be played before Maiden.

Two 140s plus a D10 gave Dowinton a 1 leg lead despite a ton from the King. Yet another ton in the next looked likely to level but the Buster requiring 60 coolly slotted home the required points in two.

With the finals at stake the last match was good but not quite up to what was expected. Maiden took the first on D5 after a 95 and 116.

Dowinton stepped his game up a little in the second with a ton and 135 but unfortunately couldn’t hit a double. The Kat duly obliged on D13 for a 2-0 score line.

Down at Phil Batt´s PB´s two more ¨champions elect¨ made the last 8 in reasonable fashion. Game of the night didn’t feature either of the qualifiers, but Stuart Clark v. Mika Oksanom, who had previously been included somehow in the Ladies Singles at Hattons! Now we all know that Mika is far from feminine but totally testosterone filled, manly and masculine, so what idiot put him in the Ladies Singles? All I can say is that it was a committee member and not Kingsbury.

Anyway Clark was impressive in beating Oksanom 2-0, the first scoring 100,99 and 2 double 8s for some showboating and then a 3 ton second leg concluding with D2. Clark couldn’t repeat that form when facing Sid Cross who had earlier disposed of Den Hall 2-0 both hitting respectable 140s, Cross making it 2-0 with a 72 out (S12,S20,D20). The Eagle could only muster a lone ton when facing Cross, who took full advantage hitting 100,121 and D7,D16 for victory. Que Pasa´s Kevin Wood was in confident mood to qualify winning his three matches 2-0,2-1 and 2-0 bagging 6 tons or more on the way.

His first opponent Steve Woods was taken out on D16 and D2. His next, Stewart McCulloch split the Eagles winning legs on D13, Wood hitting 3 of his tons in this match and finishing on D10 and D20. The remaining two tons were left for Karl Cooper, who won´t be joining partner Leah in the finals at Breakaways.

At the Hub, organiser Ray Sanderson had the pleasure of witnessing some fine matches and numerous tons but not the progress of fellow

Porter Peter Ayres who has recently been playing excellent darts for his captain but somehow has now gone a very dark brown. Practising outdoors now Peter? Whatever he is doing it is working but unfortunately not against John Lane who took out the exuberant sun tanned Porter 2-1 on D18 and 56 (S16,D20), Ayres taking the middle leg.

Lane scored 126,100,133, his opponent 100,119,137, some match but Lane didn’t go further as his next game was against the highly animated Bulgarian Alex Nikolov who had earlier taken out the much fancied Mark Filer in a match where the Kat scored 101,100,100,100 Filer replying with three of his own. The difference on this occasion was Nikolov´s finishing, 19,bull in the first and S19,D20 in the second for 2-0. Lane must have felt confident facing Nikolov, but finding the T20 was more difficult than he imagined. The Meerkat didn’t have the same problem going out on D9 and D5 after 2x100 and 140 with no reply from the Pirate. Joining Nikolov at Breakaways will be Gogarty´s John Linton, yet another player enjoying fine form.

Identical legs from the Gopher against Brian Mears took him through to face Graham Todd for qualification. A D16 and ton in the first was replicated in the second for 2-0. Todd, fully equipped this week with glasses opened his account at the Hub with a victory over Pirate Terry Kirby 2-0 on D1 and D10. Linton was a little tougher, the Gopher opening with a ton and then setting up a shot with a magnificent 171 followed by D5 next throw. Todd immediately came back as expected with some good scoring and a 121, completing the 501 on D20.

Linton upped the ante in the third with 132,140 and D6 for a 2-1 score line and a visit to the finals.

Shirley Roberts must have been disappointed not to have progressed in the Alex Nikolov Building Services Singles, her first round opponent Simone de Lacey has been slowly moving up the Exite Radio Merit Table with some fine throwing, both currently figuring in the top 5, with only 3 league matches to play (points are only awarded in league games). The Buster was devoid of any scoring form in their match, de Lacey finding a useful 123 and D2 for the first followed by another D2 for the match and a tough game next against yet another Buster Irene Russell. The diminutive Russell had woken everyone up in the first game of the evening against Queen Rachael Broadhead.

The Royal gained the first leg only for the tiny figure of Russell to hit a 180 followed by D11 to level. The little lady nearly made it two maximums, but had to be content with a 140 and then a tasty 60 out (S20,D20) for 2-1. Unfortunately her form deserted her against de Lacey and despite some good scores, couldn’t cope with the Honeys 140 and two winning doubles on D8 and D3. De Lacey´s next match featured PB´s Gilly Kirby 130 who had won her previous match against Sarah Simpson 112, the ever popular DJ. D1 and D7 got the Pirate through to the next round to face a confident de Lacey. A 117 from Kirby was the highest score of the tie, but it was the Honey who took the spoils on D2 and D16. Joining her will be Yvonne Rouffignac who gave a good account of herself against Sue Wiles winning 2-0 on D2 and D10 along with a 124. To qualify Yvonne needed to overcome Ann Griffiths, winner by 2-1 against Julie McCulloch in the previous round. The Royal one didn’t really get into the match as did her opponent who achieved the two vital doubles on D20 and D5 accompanied with two tons for 2-0 and the final in sight.

At the Pint Depot former finalist Sonya Cooper followed Shirley Roberts as an also ran and will have to wait until next term for singles glory. Someone who has made the latter stages and will be a threat is Leah Chesworth who will be accompanied by Pint Depot Queen Marie Dunne. Four good competitors for the semis; can I pick a winner, no, it will be down to who can hold their nerve. Judging by the stats de Lacey will start as slight favourite but beware the other three can play a bit.

Semi finals May 8th at Breakaways. Finals following week May 15 also at Breakaways. All are welcome. Presentation of all awards will be made after the finals on May 15th. All recipients of awards must attend.

This past month has been a very busy time for Quesada Bowls Club with the culmination of the Costa Blanca Leagues and the Finals of the Club Championships.

This year our winter league squad has won the premier championship on the Costa Blanca, the Winter League. Congratulations must go to our Winter League Captain, Pete Bonsor, who promised that he would build a team to bring the honours to Quesada Club.

Good news also for our Southern League Swallows who have won promotion to Division 1 and the Swifts who have won promotion to Division 2.

Friday evening was our Presentation Evening at The Club where we were pleased to welcome our new sponsors, SpanishlifepropertiesSL.com who presented some of the trophies, along with our President, Mike Lamberton.

Special mention must be made of our two singles champions, Lisa Bonsor, who, not only won the Ladies Singles title, but also won all of the other disciplines in the Championship, something never done before and Jason Prokopowycz winning the men’s single title for the second year running. Both of them along with the winners of the Mixed Pairs, Mixed Triples and Mixed Fours, together with the Ladies and Men’s pairs will be representing the club in the Champion of Champions in April.

Each year the club awards a trophy to the most improved players, and this year the honour went to Cathy Skinner, who, with her Club Captain husband George, was runner up in the mixed pair’s championship.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Thursday found us entertaining Antrim Lawn Bowling Club, as part of their spring tour and great company they were too. We had a splendid morning bowls and then retired to a local restaurant for an extended lunch, good fun all round.

On Friday we travelled to La Siesta to play the Wasps for our first Hurricane League fixture of the season, as always we were given a warm welcome and some even warmer bowls. As the summer season has only just started there is only one match to report on so far. In the SABA Harrier league the Country Bowls Badgers played host to the San Luis Mosquitoes. The Badgers came out of their set and saw of the bite of the Mosquitoes, winning on 5 out of the 6 rinks. The winning teams were: Sandra McIlroy, Ben Noke, Dot Davies 15-14. We also had our monthly match against the Hijackers, a good close game but the E.I. Lost by 4 rinks to 3. Never mind, must do better next time. Thanks also to Reg, I did,nt realise just how hard he works behind the scenes.

ROSEMARIE CAIRNS Quesada Bowls Club is sad to report the sudden death of Rosemarie Cairns, wife of Ronnie, who sadly passed away on Thursday 10th April.

Our thoughts go out to Ronnie and the family at this sad time.

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB The Greenlands Open.

Our Open was held over 3 days, Tues, Wed & Thurs. of last week, in what turned out to be glorious weather, with equally splendid bowling.

The results were: first semi final was Tom Spencer from La Marina v Jason Prokopowcz from Quesada, the winner was Tom Spencer The second semi final was between Bill Pain from Quesada v Mike Veal from Greenlands the winner was Bill Pain.

In the final Bill Pain was defeated Tom Spencer to be declared this years Greenlands Open Champion. All of the matches were very close run events and our congratulations are due to the eventual winner; Tom Spencer .

Saturday Roll-up A total of 26 members attended and the Saturday Roll-up and fun was had by all. Winner of the day was Barry Collins with 28 Points followed closely by a welcome visitor, Brian Cummings, with 25 pts. On a count back, Helen Langlois also on 25pts was placed third Tony Hodges brought up the rear with 24 pts Dave Thompson alas is the holder of the wooden spoon , points withheld!!

A warm welcome is extended to any bowlers visiting the area to try your luck and/or skill at Greenlands Bowls Club any Saturday morning commencing at 0930.However, the dress code is mandatory; white shirt or blouse with grey or white trousers, skirt or shorts. The green fee is €6 and shoes and bowls may be hired ,if required, for an additional nominal fee. Our Saturday morning games are sponsored by Dragon and Totus Insurance companies.

The Community Cup Five of our bravest players travelled to the far North to participate, in company with 15 other teams, in the Costa Blanca Community Cup. The competition was played at Bonalba B.C. over 4 full days (4,5,6,&7 Apr. ) of extremely competitive bowling. The Greenlands team and eventual Winner was: Lin & Brian Miller, Angie Goodfellow and Mary & Phil Lockley. A fantastic win; 'Well done' our now fabulous five.

SABA Summer Hurricane League Greenlands opened its summer SABA offensive with the Glosters and the Gladiators playing each other at home. This proved to be a very close run match and a good opening test for both teams. The result was a win for the Gladiators by 8 points to 6.

We then finished off the week with the first game of the new SABA Summer Leagues and what a great start it was for the Greeners who entertained Quesada Lancasters with a 12 points to 2 win by 124 shots to 83. Our winners were Rosemarie Savage, Geoff Paylor and Jeff Neve, Jenny Chaplin, Brian Pointon and Dave Chaplin, Dennis Graham, Sue and Barry Norris, Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Pat Rafferty and Helen Marshall, Pauline Rafferty and Sue Mynott. ALICANTE GOLF HOSTS SMGS It's around an hour's run up the motorway to successfully navigate the tricky route to Alicante Golf and that's one of the main reasons we always have a slight attendance drop when we play this venue.

Work being carried out on most of the men's tees gave a distinct advantage to the guys as most of the day they were teeing up only a couple of metres behind the ladies.

The normally slick and true Alicante greens were quite a bit wooly but, as usual, that didn't stop a good number of the field shooting under par!

The six par 3 NTP's went to Steve Fleet (3 & 12), Shay Cunningham (6), Tony Smale (8), John Osborne (15) & Debbie Morgan (17). With a very commendable 38 points Debbie also claimed the guest prize, although hubby, Jez, did his level best to "mislay" Debbie's card....latest report says he's recovering well & the swellings around both eyes are going down!

The top 3 in ascending order in the Bronze category were Keith Wraithmall (36), Mick Roscoe (38) & "in-form" Mike Jordan took top spot with 41.

Silver's winners were Ken Flaherty (29), Gwilym Rudge (30) & in 1st place was Capt Steve Davis with 38.

Three of the "usual faces" claimed the 3 top spots in the Gold division - Barry Roehrig (33), Brian Staines (34) & John Osborne with 37 came out best of the lower handicappers. Very well done to all those in the prizes.

GUARDAMAR EDGE BADMINTON FRIENDLY

Guardamar Badminton Club hosted a ladies badminton match against Pilar De La Horidada on Wednesday 9th April. The match was won by Guardamar. The games were played in a very sporting way and were harder than the scores reflect. The match was followed by lunch.

CARP-R-US NEWS For Round 7 of the Spring Series, on April 10th, the Club made its first visit of the year to Beniarres. The water was extremely low having dropped considerably over the last month.

First on the day was John Brightling with 8.00 kgs using paste and the Pole, in second place was Dennis Pick with 5.22kgs using maggot and feeder, third was Ann Fowles with 5.06kgs using corn and feeder, and in fourth spot Jackie Breslin with 2.80kgs using feeder.

The next match on 17th April is on the River Segura in Murcia Town centre. Pegs at 8.00, fish from 9.00 till 2.00.

The next Club meeting is on Sunday April 20th. Please note that there will not be a meeting on May 4th, as 14 of the members will be away, fishing the River Ebro at Riba Roja, in Cataluña.

This also means that the Quiz night which is normally held on the last Tuesday of the month, has been changed to Tuesday April 22nd.

Well were all off and bowling again with the SABA summer leagues.

Friday 11th April, & SL Wellingtons away v Quesada Blenheims, had a slow start with points 5-9. Winning the points; Frank Barclay, Shirley Withers & John Withers 17-10. June Jones, Scott Malden & Keith Jones 17-13. Margaret Rogers, Neil Morrison & Ian Rogers, 1818. SL Hercules at home v Mazarron Miners had 2 good wins & took the shots for 6points-8. Winners: Ian Ross, Peter Fuller & Dave Blackie 26-8, Steve Simmons, Barry Edwards & Peter Cox 24-11. SL Mosquitoes away v Country Bowls Badgers obviously found the journey very tiring and only managed to take 2 points-12, well done; Dave Tilley, Ian Young & Cas Blay.

Looking ahead to May, as we know San Luis has been asked to host some of the matches during the Spanish National Championships, (details on the notice-board). This means that the green will be closed

during the day from Sunday 11th May until Tuesday 20th May inclusive. Members are obviously welcome to use the green in the evening after ALL matches have been completed. This will also affect the chicken drives on 14th & 18th & “Vic’s hamper” on 17th so during this period they will be played at 6p.m.and revert back to normal from the 21st May. Internal Kangaroo (Australian Pairs) League, Keith has put the schedules on the board.

LA SIESTA BOWLS REPORT By Norman Adcroft CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The end of March saw the finals of La Siestas Club Championships and what a fine weekends bowling it was. By their very nature, any Club Championship finals are usually contested by the top bowlers from their club which leads to good exciting games for spectators. Our finals this year were no exception they were all contested in the right spirit and were a pleasure to watch. One game though, I feel needs a special mention is the Trips final played by accomplished but relatively newcomers to the club, Carol Broomfield, Carol Thorpe Skipped by Carols Husband Gary Thorpe taking on two of last year’s winners Bernadette McDonnell Skipped by her Husband Mike Kelly with Brian Fraser. It was an absolute treat to watch. The match was close all the way through and after Mike Kelly’s team squared the scores after eighteen ends, it was anybodies game. Alas for Mike it was not to be losing the extra end by one shot. Both teams left the green to a standing ovation. For me it was ‘telly bowls’ and I’d have paid to watch it. Well done.

Much has been written in recent years about how changes in technology are making some of these events into a putting competition and I am sure that the ever growing list of non big name players winning the majors adds fuel to this fire but at August in particular there are many more elements to the game that a winner needs to become a champion. Not only is a sound swing required but an incredible amount of vision, touch, feel ,nerve and mental toughness and some of these things aren’t taught but come from deep inside the player. THE ORANGE TREE GOLF SOCIETY AT LA TORRE Once again this newly formed golf society met to play its fortnightly society event. Considering it was Aprils fool day the members all turned up and not many practical jokes were played.

On arrival at the course we were once again met with lovely weather, the golfing gods have been shining on us this year. Plus we were once again made very welcome by the staff of one of the best courses on the Costa.

Thanks must go to these people for making the day go smoothly.

This time around it was the 1st ever Spring Cup, which is combined pairs competition, with the winners being allowed to defend the trophy the following season.

We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree Bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig for the presentation and lovely snacks and drinks. Thanks to Chris, Nigel, Lilly, Hannah and Viv for providing these and the wonderful welcome also.

On a clear warm sunshine morning 32 members assembled at the tee, the course proved to be in good condition and some interesting golf was played and enjoyed.

CAFE UNO GOLF SOCIETY (FORMERLY FAIRWAYZ GS) Fourteen members, under our new society name Café Uno, played today Thursday 10th April in the glorious sunshine at Bonalba Golf.

The course was in good condition allowing some reasonable scores to be posted. The attendance was low today due to some members having other commitments. Afterwards, we attended Café Uno in Catral, for the presentations and an excellent meal.

Honours were even in the first half as Piatti put Valencia ahead on twenty minutes, only for a rare goal from one of Elche’s heroes last year, Coro to equalise, 1 – 1 at the break. Parejo put Valencia back into the lead with a right-foot shot after a solo run, but Elche were definitely not down-hearted and took the game to their high-flying neighbours. By Steve Hibberd Last Wednesday evening, Torry welcomed Ribarroja to Vicente Garcia Stadium for a div 3 match, in which 3 points had to be gained if a realistic shout for the play offs is to be achieved. There was a minutes silence before the start, in respect of Ontinyent player Oscar Sanchez, who tragically died recently.

Torry made a great start, scoring after only 7 mins, following an Obele assist which was headed home at the far post by Micro.
