BUSY EASTER MEANS A BUSY SUMMER

Despite early indications suggesting that the Easter break may have been one of the quietest in some time, the reality of how busy the first main holiday break has been looks set to pave the way for an even better summer. Prior to the start of the weekend, the DGT traffic department had already warned of an anticipated 12 million vehicle movements as residents living inland headed towards coastal towns for the holidays. Across the Valencia region, taking in the Costa Blanca and such hot spots as Benidorm, Torrevieja and Orihuela, the figure was estimated at 1,535,000, half a million of which were in the Alicante province. The figure was quoted as being the quietest since 2005, although anybody who got stuck in the countless traffic jams on the bottle neck of the N-332 in Torrevieja will testify, the reality seemed busier than ever.

Tourists coming from the UK were also expected to be particularly positive in terms of numbers, with an estimated 1.6 million Brits heading out of the UK to Spain, the most popular choice, as well as Turkey, Tunisia and Florida, according to the ABTA assn. Budget airline Easyjet announced that on Friday they were expecting their busiest day in the history of the company, since they were founded in 1995, flying more than 200,000 passengers on 1,400 flights. Alicante-Elche airport had 2,343 flight movements scheduled for the weekend, which implies an increase of 28.2% compared to Easter last year, with the busiest day being Saturday, with around 250 scheduled flights offering nearly 44,000 seats. In an interview this week, Oliver Dörschuck, co-manager at Europe’s leading travel group TUI, which includes popular tourist brands such as First Choice and Thomson, says that “Spain is by far the most important tourist destination for TUI and its clients. Spain is and will continue to be a key destination for us.” It wasn´t just the plane and roads bringing people to the Costa Blanca though, during the course of the next 3 weeks, more than 8,000 cruise passengers will set foot on land at Alicante, aboard 5 ships that will be docking on the 23rd and 24th of April, and the 1st, 2nd and 8th of May, with passengers travelling with Pulmantur, Thomson and Holland America Line. On Good Friday, 2,610 passengers already arrived at the port, on board the Holland America Line cruise ship, MS Nieuw Amsterdam. With her 11 passenger decks and 285 metre length, she was launched in 2009 and entered service in 2013, Nieuw Amsterdam is the company’s 81st ship and the second largest Holland America ship to date. Francesco Balbi, director of operations at the Terminal de Cruceros de Alicante, explained how the port is already geared up to handle such large numbers, with an information point, including health and first aid services, equipment and staff for dealing with passengers of reduced mobility, loading and unloading facilities and links with tourist and travel information and excursion companies to provide every possible facility that a modern cruise passenger my need. The port itself is also set to undergo extensive work during the next ten years, which would allow up to 70 ships per year to dock, increasing the potential number of passengers to 250,000 per year. As for the ever increasingly popular train link, this too was boosted, with 50,000 seats being made available, some 5,000 more than the normal schedule, with many would-be passengers still fininding it difficult to find an available ticket and even some political groups 8000 cruise pax will dock in Alicante in the next 3 weeks

Collectively, as both domestic and international tourists descended on Spain, the figures for hotel occupancy also suddenly showed signs of significant growth. The Alicante hotel association reported an 80% occupancy figure for the Easter weekend, an 8% increase over last year, provincially. Alicante city has been more popular with international tourists than the Spanish throughout the year, with the exception being the Easter weekend, with the financial crisis being blamed for a drop in customers outside this key time. The Benidorm hotel association HOSBEC were anticipating between 95% and 100% occupancy, with president Antoni Mayor explaining how they were increasingly close to hanging the “Completo” signs on the doors. The British, Belgian and Dutch markets have been particularly good for Benidorm, as well as a fair share of domestic visitors. Torrevieja was looking set to be placed in between those two places, with the Hotel Doña Monse showing a 90% occupancy rate, though most of their guests were Spanish, seemingly not quite managing to reach out to the international tourist sector yet. Translating the visitor numbers into financial figures is the most important element in the sector of course, and so time can only tell how successful the weekend has actually been. We do know however that in January, the Spanish tourist sector recorded a 2.1 billion euro surplus, an increase of 10.5% compared to the same month in 2013, whereas in February, the value was 6.1 billion euro, a similar increase of 9.1% over 2013. The World Travel and Tourism Council has forecast a growth of 2% in the Spanish tourism sector in 2014, whilst the longer term forecast for the second half of the year has been put at over 17 million tourists, again maintaining a 9.6% growth over 2013.

BEACH WATER QUALITY IS MOSTLY EXCELLENT According to data released by the Valencia government, the region has some of the best quality beaches in Spain, with 90% of all beaches having “excellent” water quality, with a further 5.5% being classed as “good”. As part of the monitoring plan for beaches, Programa de Control de la Calidad de las Zonas de Baño de la Comunitat Valenciana, 197 beaches across the region were checked, from 226 points of reference. According to the data, 95.5% of those beaches registered as

being of particularly high standard in preparation for the 2014 season, representing “the best results obtained so far”. In the Alicante province, 94 beaches were tested, with 93 of them being classed as either “excellent” or “good”, thus totalling 98.9%. As for the province of Castellón, its 46 tested beaches have excellent quality water, but Valencia seemed to let the side down a little, with just 49 of its 57 beaches rating highly, or just 85.9%., although that is one more beach than last year. The aim of the scheme is to verify the quality of bathing water and develop appropriate management of the beaches as a whole to prevent any circumstance that might affect bathing

areas. Monitoring involves the analysis of natural and artificial channels that reach the sea in bathing areas or nearby.

ALICANTE REMAINS TO P FOR FOREIGN PRO PERTY BUYERS Alicante pr ovince is the biggest area area of interest interest to foreign foreign buyers

Foreign investors in Valencia bought 16,619 properties last year, representing an increase of 17% over 2012, with a value of 1.7 billion euro, an 11% increase on the previous year. The data released by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment also confirms that the Alicante province is the biggest area of interest to foreign buyers, with 13,786 properties sold, with the resale properties fairing particularly well. In financial terms however, Alicante accounts for 87% of the total value of purchases made. In terms of where those buyers come from, Russia is leading the way, having tripled the number of sales since 2009. Buyers from the UK are now in second place, with those from Algeria also showing a particular growth. In 2008 the majority of property purchases made by foreigners were from the United Kingdom, with 40% of all sales, whereas in 2013, this percentage has dropped to 13%. The areas which have increased are the Russian market, up by 13%, the collection of Nordic countries with a 19% increase, Algeria up

9% and buyers from Belgium up 8%. The positive trend has been seen since 2008, where sales rose 25.4% in the first quarter. In the last three months of 2013, that figure rose to 31.4%. Sales to non-residents have seen a bigger increase, with 14.3% in the first quarter of 2008, compared to 36.6% in the last of 2013. In total, during the last quarter of 2013, 33.6% of all homes sold to foreigners in Spain were in the Valencia region, with the second most important location, Andalusia, being responsible for 19.9%. The next key locations in terms of percentage of national sales were Catalu単a with 15.5%, the Canarias with 11.3% and the Balearics with 6.5%. The Ministerial Department plans to hold a meeting in Madrid next month, with businessmen, property agents and estate agencies, among others, in order to introduce initiatives and developments to reactivate the productive activity and employment increase, intent on increasing the use of housing for foreigners.

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW ENFORCEMENT MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER he environmental protection arm of the Guardia Civil, SEPRONA, or El Servicio de Protecci贸n de la Naturaleza, arrested 431 people and charged another 1,528 during 2013, according to data released by the group. In addition to the arrests, officers also dealt with 102,629 environmental complaints, of which 1,991 constituted criminal offences, the remaining 100,628 covered by administrative legislation.

Of the 1,959 people who were arrested or charged, 174 of them were for offences against pets, 188 were in connection with forest fires and 72 were in relation to the quality of food. However, the largest propor-

tion of complaints were in connection with the protection of wildlife, with 49,461 of the complaints relating to both domestic and wild animals, as well as inadequate waste management, resulting in 20,102 administrative reports. The number of actions have increased considerably, but the Guardia Civil are putting that largely down to there being more awareness of SEPRONA, and their activities, as well as an increase in citizen participation in reporting potential offences, with postcards, emails and calls adding another 1,000 investigations to the quota. The use of illegal poison and methods were particularly high on the list of actions, with 151 animals having been killed, some by poisoned bait, with 6 people being arrested and charged for this type of activity. The animals most affected were the red kite (Milvus Milvus) and the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), with 30 and 13 copies respectively found dead by eating these illegal products. In relation to domestic animals, 3,256 actions relating to the abuse and neglect of pets were carried out, resulting in 234 criminal offenses that led to the arrest of 40 people and the imputation of other 134. Following the previously reported depletion of bird numbers in Torrevieja, the Compromis political group have asked SEPRONA to investigate if any criminal or administrative sanctions can be brought against those responsible for purposely flooding the salt lakes, one of many activities being carried out in the area which is already having a disastrous impact on the natural environment.

TRAPPED DOGS RESCUED BY FIRE CREW As emergency crews across Spain have been kept busy during this busy holiday period, one crew from Valencia performed a miracle rescue this week, at a finca in the town of Ontinyent. The crew were called to rescue two dogs that had fallen into a twelve metre deep pit at the Casa de Chots finca, late in the evening. In a two and a half hour operation that finished just before midnight the crew tirelessly tried to keep the terrified dogs calm, before using ropes to extract them. One of the dogs was rescued using a bucket method on the rope pulley, but the second dog was too big for this procedure, and so one of the fire fighters was lowered down into the hole, and lifted him out by hand, as he and the dog were winched up together.

The dogs were both in good health, no doubt relieved that their ordeal was over, and were left in the care of volunteers at an animal rescue centre, who were also present in the rescue, until a permanent home can be found.

WORST YEAR ON RECORD FOR CITRUS FRUIT

Spanish citrus growers are facing the worst year on record, as the final stages of their latest crop are coming to a close, with many of them abandoning their crops as uneconomical to harvest.

In the Valencia region, famed for quality oranges and lemons, as well as being the country麓s largest clemantine production area, many crops are lacking in size and colour, resulting in research having to be carried out to try to ascertain the reasons for the poor performance. The Institute of Agricultural Research has already started looking into methods and treatments to find the cause of the problem, as well as finding ways of preventing dryness and poor calcium assimilation. Overall, however, the main factor affecting the crops is one that may seem outside the hands of those researching the problem, unseasonal weather conditions. The mild weather through the last year alone has caused problems with both consumption and demand, resulting in a saturated market where there is too much fruit than the buyer demands, especially during February and March, and prices having to adapt accordingly. Cheaper imports are also having a toll of sales figures, with Spanish clementines shipping for export at around 15 to 20 euro per box, those from Morocco are selling for between 12 and 13 euro. A similar situation affects oranges, with plentiful supply from Egypt pushing process down. The demand for cheaper prices in stores has also led to some of the biggest buyers of fruit also switching to cheaper imports, as can be seen in the number of products on supermarket shelves with origins outside of Spain. Despite some growers abandoning crops, and the belief that the acreage of land for citrus fruits will continue to reduce, there are some growers who are abandoning citrus altogether, diversifying into other fruits, with the kaki being one that is growing in favour with consumers, and a market yet to be depleted by the foreign importers.

ORIHUELA BEACHES, WALKWAYS AND EASTER CELBRATIONS The Councillor for the coast of Orihuela, Martina Scheurer, has explained that the application and award of the contract for the beach bars has been delayed, but, despite them not being able to operate on the beaches during Easter, she is confident that the administrative issues will be resolved within a matter of weeks. Meanwhile, a number of local business owners are expressing their delight at the lack of bars during the first of the busy seasons, as their trade has increased as a result.

Footpath work on the paseo at Cala Capitán has been completed in time for Easter, marking a huge improvement to an area which has appeared run-down for many years. The footpath along the sea front has also finally been completed, as there was a significant gap between the original walkway and the beach access. The remaining features will be added shortly, as the handrails, lights and other street fixtures are due to be delivered not long after the Easter break. Bike parking will also be installed, to encourage the use of a more eco-friendly form of transport.

Despite the lack of beach bars on the Orihuela costa, the town hall has installed toilets on the beaches, and the life guard services were in place for the Easter period, although the contract for the life guards will be terminated and put to tender once again, after the request to withdraw from the commitments of the contract was made by the company, who have provided the service for the last 2 years, on account of them facing bankruptcy proceedings. A meeting will be held on the 24th of April between the Orihuela town hall and representatives of local surfers. The meeting has come about following a protest on the beach, in which a number of surfers challenged the fact that they were being prevented from practising their sports, due to a new sign that was installed on the beach. The councillor of the coast pointed out that this has always been the case and the regulation is not new, in fact the town hall, for the first time, made a concession to allow surfing during certain times of year, when the beaches are quieter, even going against the advice of the police, but the surfers are seemingly now making further demands which cannot be met without being of detriment to the safety and quality standards of the beaches. The new sign, paid for by the tax payer, has since disappeared. Despite a minor delay of around 2 months, the two further pedestrian footbridges being installed on the Orihuela Costa are set to open in the middle of May. Providing a safer passage to pedestrians over the motorway at La Zenia and also near the new school, residents have been calling for the bridges for many years, and will shortly become a reality.

This will attract athletes from across the country for an event that will not only reaffirm the Orihuela Costa as a sporting location of international standard, it will showcase the area to those taking part, visiting and just watching the event. The Easter celebrations have been seen as a success by the Orihuela town hall, with the tourism department arranging guided tours of a number of areas of historic interest, in order to “supplement” the traditional Easter attractions of the parades, which guides in English having been made available to those wishing to learn more about the culture rich area. Similarly, the bus service laid on by the town hall from the coast to the Good Friday parade was once again a success, as residents and visitors from the coast took a trip to one of the most dramatic events of the Easter calendar.

The councillor for social welfare in Orihuela, Emilio Zaplana, has announced the initial provision of 12,000 euro, which will be shared amongst people in need of help in paying their water supply bill. Aimed specifically at those on low income, the elderly and those caring for the disabled, the application process for the 220 euro grant is open until the 5th of June. May will be dominated by sporting events on the Orihuela Costa, with the annual Decabike event taking place on the 11th of May, whereas sporting chain Decathlon encourage everybody to get involved in an event dedicated to the two-wheel mode of transport, the bicycle. However, this year, roller skates and other selfpropelled forms of wheeled transport will be included, and the police are planning to attend with their children´s training equipment to provide cycling proficiency and road safety information

The stage show Hécuba, scheduled to take place on the 25th of April in Orihuela´s Teatro Circo, has been cancelled after the star of the show, Concha Velasco, has fallen ill and has been operated on for peritonitis. Concha Velasco, full name Concepción Velasco Varona, is a Spanish film actress, theatre actress, singer, and TV presenter, born in Valladolid on November the 29th, 1939.

ONLY 1% OF CLASSROOMS WILL BE PORTACABINS

The Department of Education in the Valencia regional government has issued a statement explaining how more than 3,000 students across the region are no longer being taught in prefabricated, portable classrooms, and are now educated in purpose built school buildings. The announcement was made after a commitment given by the government to eliminate 75% of this type of “portacabin” school by the end of the current administration. The spokesperson for the department, María José Català, explained that during 2013, 329 temporary classrooms were eliminated, thanks to the construction of five new schools, including the CEIP Acequión en Torrevieja, and before the end of the term, another 14 schools will be completed, including the long awaited school on the Orihuela Costa,

thus eliminating a further 300 temporary classes, with the overall aim, by the end of this legislative period, being just 1.2% of classrooms operating from portacabins. The total investment in educational infrastructure for 2014 is 47 million euro, from which more than 28 million will be allocated for the building of 14 new schools and 9 million for completion of those which are underway. The Government of Valencia has built 27 new schools across the three provinces of the region since the beginning of their administrative term, which involves an investment of over 100 million euro. A total of 11 new schools are in Alicante, the same number in Valencia and 5 in Castellón. From those schools, there have been 103 infant classrooms completed, which must include the infant school on the Orihuela Costa which has so far not been necessary, 175 primary classrooms and 46 secondary school classrooms, plus 14 for higher education and an additional 3 for vocational training.

ORIHUELA SUMMER SCHOOL OPEN FOR REGISTRATION The Orihuela Costa municipal sports centre has launched this year´s summer school program, aimed at highlighting some of the events that will be available throughout the summer to those visitors and residents who may be currently enjoying the Easter break. The 2014 Summer School will begin in the last week of June and end in the first of September, with entrants able to take part for the entire duration of the program, or just for a single day, as well as subscriptions for weekly, fortnightly and monthly attendance. Targeting the 4 to 14 years of age group, the sessions will be open from 08:30 until 16:30, and are aimed at easing the strain on those parents who may have to work during the summer holidays, whilst offering educational, informative and fun sessions for the children. Professional tuition will be included in all of the sporting activities on offer, as well as the opportunity to take part in a wide range of events such as basketball , handball , volleyball, soccer, swimming and tennis, as well as an equally divers range of practical workshops tackling such subjects as clay, keychain, magnet and metal crafts, nature, environmental and recycling workshops, all accompanied by a review which can also be used to help boost the school reports. A wide range of fun events are also included, not only the standard sporting activities, offering the opportunity for the children to take part in some of the more unusual events and pastimes too, such as archery, for example.

CONFUSION OVER TORREVIEJA CYCLE STREETS hen Torrevieja council launched their new cycle lanes network to run through the city, it would appear that the actual plans as to how this would work in some places were omitted from the presentation, with many residents now questioning the appearance of unusual looking street signs in the city centre. Since 2011, the town hall had been promoting their intention to create a dedicated network of paths for bikes, which would run from the sports city through the streets in the centre, the first time this dedication to green transport had been made, but the 100,000 euro project has done no such thing in many of the places considered to be the most dangerous by cyclists. The signs which have appeared on some of the streets indicate both a 30 kilometre per hour limit, and a pictogram of a cycle. It would appear that on certain roads where the bike passage was planned, it would have been impossible to create separate lanes, as this would have required the removal of parking places for cars. So, the solution on these roads is the creation of “Cycle Streets”, where bikes and cars same the same space and travel along the same route. Or, a normal road, as most of us would consider it. The cyclists who have commented have expressed their concerns already, as this does not in any way offer any kind of additional protection, or incentive, as the bikes still have to cross countless dangerous intersections, and my mixing with the traffic in the busy centre of the city, as well as pedestrians, is the opposite of what was supposed to occur. As for the speed limit, as the streets are frequently congested with cars anyway, the natural flow of traffic is often slower than

that anyway, and is therefore also seen as nothing more than a feeble attempt to try to mask the fact that the glory of the intended dedicated routes was once more premature. The “Cycle Street” concept is not a new one, in fact there are already routes present in places such as Alicante, but the concerns now are after the way in which the route was presented and the promises perceived by those who were looking forward to a safer transit, as this project does not seem to offer any of the protection promised during that wave of publicity that followed the presentation by the government team.

TORREVIEJA TO PAY HALF A MILLION EURO OVERTIME Despite previously praising themselves on the savings made through staffing costs, in the next plenary session of the Torrevieja town hall, it is expected that the council will approve a half a million euro payment, which has so far not been budgeted for, to enable them to pay 535,000 euro in overtime to town hall staff. However, one of the more shocking revelations that has come from the plans to approve the payment, is that more than half of the bill, 266,772.17 euro, is to be shared between just 35 of their staff of 600. One single person alone, who is responsible for municipal contracts, is set to receive 17,881 euro in overtime, along with 7,000 euro for a secretary. When it is considered that the current minimum wage in Spain stands at just under 10,000 euro per year, this overtime bill alone could have easily paid for an additional 26 workers to carry out the tasks covered by those individuals now set to receive such incredible boosts to their pay packet from the municipal funds. That said, the agreement to make the payment may well smooth relationships with the local police a little, as the largest collective group who will be receiving their overtime is them, with 12 officers set to receive payments ranging from between 5,041 euro and 12,300 euro, including the chief of police, Manuel Antonio López Vera, his son,

who is also a serving officer, three members of the GRO task force, and other officers. The payment schedule is currently in the hands of a financial committee for review and approval before being presented to the town hall, with the ruling PP expected to approve the payment. It should also be noted that there are also a small group of town hall workers who have taken the decision to save the public funds from this additional financial burden, by waiving their overtime payment in exchange for time off in lieu.

CAMPAIGN TO GET DOG BEACH IN TORREVIEJA

Becoming an ever increasing phenomenon in Spain, the concept of dog-friendly beaches may soon become a reality in Torrevieja, with the PSOE councillor, Dora Fernández, leading a campaign to try to have a beach on the coast of the city dedicated for use by dogs and their human companions. A petition was started a short while ago, canvassing opinion on whether this would be a welcome addition to the beaches of Torrevieja, already collecting around 1,400 signatures in support. According to Fernández, “more and more municipalities are encouraged and enabling a piece of beach that dog owners can attend with their pets. They are cities that are committed to the new demands of citizens who want more modern and tolerant beaches for themselves and their pets, integrating them into harmonious city life”. The socialist group believes that as Torrevieja is both a city of rich touristic value, where over half of the population are foreign, it is those immigrants who are often most committed to their pets, and is convinced that the move would be welcomed. Coastal towns around Spain including Mijas, Fuengirola, el Campello, Gandía, Tarragona and Tenerife all have beaches for dogs already, and Orihuela have also started looking into the possibility on their shoreline, to further enhance the facilities already plans for the animal loving population. The socialists are now pushing for the project to become a reality as early as this summer, but also say that they will continue to encourage registration on the petition, and will continue to fight for what they see as the next important development in opening up the beaches to all.

You are so lucky! A reality check. I was recently asked to speak at a meeting for expats. It was one of those question and answer forums, which provided the opportunity for established expats to bare their souls about things that they both liked and disliked in their new lives, as well as providing an opportunity for newly arrived expats to learn something from the experiences of others. I was struck by a comment from one lady who made the point that she both hated, as well as felt guilty, whenever her friends and family in the UK, made the comment that, “You are just so lucky…” Judging from the nods and murmurs of approval from others around her, she had made a point that many others also recognised. I certainly do, and it is a comment that also irritates me. In my experience, we create our own good fortune in life, and I can think of very few expats who have not worked hard to create a new life for themselves in another country. The thoughts of moving to another country in the sunshine, when peering out of the window to endless rain and fog and surrounded by floods, is understandably appealing. However, many ‘would be’ expats forget the downsides of not being in a country that speaks the same language, the significant differences in customs and traditions, as well as dealing with legal and financial systems that may seem unnecessarily complicated to the newly arrived expat. Many expats that I know are involved for years in fighting legal and property disputes with their neighbours, town halls or property developers. Of course, many problems stem from not understanding the language and culture, as well as the legal traditions of their new country, and being

swept along by the idea of starting a new life in the sun. When I worked as a reporter in the Costa Blanca, my colleagues and I often commented in despair that when Brits left the UK, many left their brains at home. So many expats seemed to get themselves into dangerous legal and financial situations that they would not have considered in their home country. Maybe it is the effects of the heady combination of too much sunshine, as well as gin and tonics that are at the root of the problem. However, back to the meeting… Homesickness and missing family and friends, British food and British television were all some of the predictable responses to questions asked about what expats miss most. Interestingly, those expats who seemed to have settled best of all in their adopted country were those that had made an effort to learn the language, those who worked or were involved in local community or charity work, as well as those who had a sensitivity and interest in the local culture and traditions. It was very easy to spot less successful expats who began most sentences with “When we lived in Preston, we used to…” or “Why don’t the Spanish do it in the same way we used to in the UK?” Indeed, the first rule of being a successful expat is, as tempting as it might be, to forget comparisons with your home country. Accept things as they are and try to work with them, rather than to fight against them. Are we lucky? One thing became very clear from this meeting of expats; nothing is handed over on a plate; it is not luck, but courage

The government of Valencia has approved a decrease in the cost of the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV, slashing 17.1% off the cost of a standard vehicle inspection, and 18.3% off that for a diesel passenger car. As a result, the cost of the mandatory certification equivalent to the UK M.O.T. has dropped by 2.48 euro for most vehicles, by 2.75 euro for diesels, with reductions also for noise and emission tests. In addition to the reduction, the government has also standardised costs for the likes of quads, ATVs and camper vehicles, which were not specifically dealt with previously. The Valencia region has contracted seven companies to complete the ITV test, who have been operating since 1997. In the past, many motorists have taken their vehicles to other regions for a cheaper test, meaning that Valencia had been missing out. This price change brings the region closer to the price of its neighbours.

EXPECTANT MUMS TAKE TO THE WATER he department of health in the town halls of Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada have embarked on a campaign of water based activities and exercise workshops, aimed at avoiding complications in childbirth. The objective of the initiative is to develop a healthy program of comprehensive training for pregnant women through a method known as AIPAP, generally considered as pelvic floor exercises done in the water. Studies sug-

gest that by adopting the methods explained in AIPAP, there is a decrease in the likelihood of caesarean and instrumental delivery. Furthermore, recent studies collected by the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists suggest that exercise during pregnancy produces benefits that reduce weight gain and fat deposition, mental and physical state and result in fewer complications during labour. Noelia Rodríguez, Supervisor of the Department of

Comprehensive Care for Women and Child Health in Torrevieja, says that the methods “improve the recovery of the mothers after childbirth and breastfeeding is improved”. In addition, “babies are born with less body fat, which in turn avoids the problem of childhood obesity”, as well as other health benefits, including the “psychological preparation, monitoring, support and good birth control, and having the necessary skills, attitudes and necessary biomechanics that are critical to a successful delivery”. The workshops take place in Torrevieja Wednesday from 10:00 to 12:30 in the Infanta Cristina swimming pools, whereas in Pilar de la Horadada, the course runs on a Friday from 12:30 to 14:00 in the pool at the sports centre. More information and enrolment can be done through the midwifery service at both health centres, with a tailored plan being provided to maximise the needs of each expectant mother.

BEARING THE WEIGHT OF THE EASTER PROCESSIONS As the biggest part of the Easter celebrations drew to a close, it is hoped that those involved in carrying the huge floats through the streets of Costa Blanca towns would suffer fewer injuries this year, thanks to a proactive campaign by the Physiotherapy Unit of the hospitals at Torrevieja and Vinalopó. All too aware of the countless problems suffered by the cofrades and costaleros, professionals from the physiotherapy department embarked on a tour of many of the groups, offering practical advice and exercise plans to show those who carry the burden of weight how stretching and mobility before and after the processions and during the relay, can minimise long term damage. Much like professional sports people, a “warm-up”

is crucial in order to strengthen the muscles of the legs, back and the abdomen, with experts recommending the use of protective supports in areas most susceptible to injury, such as support bandages or girdles, looking straight ahead and avoiding the increased curvature of the neck and spine. The advice was also to drink plenty of water or sports drinks during any physical effort and wear comfortable and flexible shoes, without heels, thus distributing the weight evenly on the foot. Post-procession exercises were also included in the advice, such as stretching the back and lower limbs to achieve greater relaxation. However, if you were involved and feel any kind of pain, the overall advice is that if symptoms persist longer than three days, it is important to see your physiotherapist for an initial assessment and treatment.

YOUR VOTE COUNTS MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED The electoral list for the European Parliament elections Iis now closed for registration but you still have plenty of time to make sure your name is on the list for the Spanish Local elections which will be held in spring 2015. Many members of the non Spanish community resident along the coast still feel that they should stay out of Spanish politics even though they are living here in Spain, pay their taxes and local taxes here in Spain and are directly influenced in their daily lives by the decisions made by the local councillors who serve their area. Gone are the days when the huge ex-pat population should think of themselves as visitors. Those people who have taken up residency here in Spain have shown that they are full members of the local community where they are living. Along with residency come the obligations of paying taxes to help provide the services that all people who live here, whether Spanish or non Spanish are entitled to. If the non Spanish population financially contribute to the community through local and national taxes then they have even more right in voicing their opinions about how that money should be spent, especially on the local level. Orihuela Costa has some very distinct features that have historically meant that decisions made about spending patterns within the Orihuela Municipality have favoured the mainly Spanish inhabitants of Orihuela City itself and the many small villages found inland to the disadvantage of the coastal resident. One of the most distinctive features of Orihuela Costa is that well over 80% of its inhabitants are non Spanish. Another feature of Orihuela Costa is that this is the area that has seen the greatest growth in population anywhere within the Orihuela area. No other area within Orihuela has seen so much growth in economic activity, clearly dominated by house building, tourism in all its aspects and retail. There can be no denying that the wealth creation centre of Orihuela is decidedly based along the coastal margin. However, it is equally valid to state that this is not and never has been evident in the spending patterns of the Orihuela Municipal Council who have used and abused the inhabitants of Orihuela Costa and have decidedly used revenue

received from this area to improve the lives of people living over thirty kilometres away whilst totally neglecting and negating the needs and well being the coastal resident. It is normally true that all town council spending whether here in Spain or back in the home countries of many ex-pat inhabitants attempts to ensure that areas that are more deprived than others have access to equal level of services as more affluent areas. Normally councillors attempt to ensure that there is fairness in the provision and delivery of council based services throughout their municipality. However this is not at all the case here on Orihuela Costa. Whilst Orihuela Costa may be the most economically productive region is within Orihuela it is by far the most deprived in terms of necessary and needed public services. Your vote matters in local elections! These elections have a direct impact on spending patterns within a municipal area and the councillors who are elected are responsible in making decisions about what facilities and services the area you live in receives. When there are so few councillors who represent Orihuela Costa is it surprising that spending always goes to Orihuela City and the small villages. You can help change this situation.

CAMPOVERDE THEATRE GROUP DONATE 250 EURO TO ‘REACH OUT’ Campoverde Theatre Group were delighted to present further funds to another worthwhile charity from the proceeds of their February pantomime Robinson Crusoe.

This time Reach Out of Torrevieja were presented with a cheque to the value 250€ to help them provide for the many needy families who use their services. Some of the members of Campoverde Theatre Group were shown the various aspects of the work of this very special charity and everyone was impressed with the help provided by Reach Out to people and families in need in this time of crisis. Karolina of Reach Our detailed the way all donations to the charity contribute towards supporting very needy and destitute families that have no other form of support. Presently Campoverde Theatre Group is in rehearsals for their next production, I’m Free, which is their musical take on that popular television sitcom Are You Being Served? Rehearsals are at an early stage, and some key roles still need to be filled, namely Mr Lucas and male customers. Also chorus places are available for those who just want to sing. Back stage help is also required. So if you have ever wanted to get involved with any aspect of drama, either on stage or behind the scenes, come along to the Community Centre, Blue Lagoon on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Que Pasa´s win guarantees them a very creditable second place after only one season playing in the league. Pint Depot Kings suffered a defeat at the hands of Brett Badlove´s Eagles and remain likely, but not necessarily, certain of league plate silverware. The Tavern could pinch it by winning both games and the Kings losing both theirs. My money is on the Kings. Porterhouse did a splendid job in holding the Hunks to a draw and remain two points above them in fifth spot, their highest league position to date. Well done to the Sandersons, Ray and Sue. The Hub Meerkats confirmed themselves as champions just one leg into their home match against Gogarty´s. A massive 36 leg advantage over second placed Que Pasa before this week´s game meant one leg would be enough to secure the league title with two to play. You would have thought it was Gogarty´s preparing for title celebrations as the La Zenia outfit turned up at Villamartin in serious party mood. Quite what the frivolities were about were unclear as captain Gail Todd´s explanation of ¨just socialising¨ didn’t really explain anything and further delving for answers with her compatriots were totally incoherent. As you can imagine the game was played in high spirits, Cynthia Jevons managing a creditable 98 in the first leg, Graham Todd and Pat Abrams countering with tons, before Lee Maiden hit the crucial D10 for the title. Abrams opened the next leg with a 99 and next throw hit his third maximum of the season, John Eyre supporting with a 113. Fumbled double opportunities, possibly due to the unbelievable noise level gave Elaine Willis a chance of a fine 122 before Eyre finished the leg on D1. A similar leg followed with Alex Nikolov claiming his first maximum of the season, the Kats 12th, Maiden claiming D7 after a S6 for D10 left the unwelcome double, Jevons hit-

ting her side´s highest score with 94. Abrams paired with Paul Durrant in the first doubles and reeled off just under 400 points between them, their opponents Jevons 85 and 90 with Todd someway adrift, seemingly on another planet. Durrant found D4 for 4-0. Richard Patterson and Brian Newton faced Nikolov and Maiden in the fifth leg and distancing themselves from the continuing high jinks duly dumped the powerful Kats pair, Patterson completing the 601 leg. Eddie Bendelow redressed the balance in the next on D4 for a 51 half time score. Patterson had the difficult task of taking on the incomparable Abrams in the first single but had advantage of throw. Two massive scores of 134 and 117 from the Gopher would usually be enough for the leg, but not this time. The Meerkat reeled off back to back 140s and closed the leg on D10. A decent performance from Willis in the next including a 114 against Eyre 125,100 was nearly enough as both players struggled on going out. Both players went close on numerous occasions but the Meerkat ended the leg successfully on D3. Maiden 100,D20 increased the hosts lead over Christine Patterson and then Jevons put in an official request for a 200 start in the next single against Durrant. If granted she would have won but the extra cushion was enough for the Kat who managed D4 after 121 and 100. Bendelow gained his second double of the night on D16 against a gradually sobering Todd 92. Kats captain Derek Kingsbury once again, in a rare but confident appearance won the last with 100,118 and D2 against Newton. I mentioned a little while ago Porterhouse were a target for one or two players wishing to join, a compliment to the team and venue. If that were to happen the Porters will be looking at a top four spot and be a danger to all and sundry. This week Ray Sanderson will be a little disappointed in not pressing home a 6-3 advantage against nearest rivals Hattons Hunks. The visitors found themselves out on a limb, 3 down with 3 to play and a potential 4 point gap looming with the possibility of a 7th finishing place. The Hunks got off to a good enough start with Sid Cross scoring a ton and Steph Simpson finishing the 1001 on D7. The first triple was pretty uneventful Peter Ayres taking out D20 for all square. Another ton from Cross and Joe Hawkins the latter finishing off the 701 giving the visitors back their advantage. Yvonne Rouffignac did all the work for partner Ray Hayes scoring a ton and taking out a nice 66 (S10,S16,D20) playing Hawkins and Stewart McCulloch. Cross was once again on the ton bandwagon in the second doubles, partner Simpson emulating the cockney hunk. It was however captain Sanderson who did the real damage finishing the leg on D9 for 3-2. Kenny Wilkinson redressed the balance for 3-3 at half time on D4. Porter Hayes was first singles on against Keith King and slotted home D20 in a leg that included a ton. Hawkins showed some of the form he is capable of by outscoring opponent Sanderson with 2x100 and a 140. Great darts but not enough as the Porters captain hit T3 (missing the single) D17 for a 5-3 advantage. McCulloch faced Rouffignac in the next and the only ton scored went to the Hunk leaving the Porter the honour of gaining the draw and point for her team on D2. The Hunks had to win the last 3 to save the match and who better to have next but Sid from Sidcup. No tons from Cross in this leg, the accolade went to Ayres but the double was Cross´s on D3. Wilkinson was next to play Sue Sanderson and promptly hit a 133. Level scoring followed but it was the Hunk who found the double first on D18 for a 6-5 score line. The last leg and decider featured Brian Nash having the throw against Simpson, the former hitting the only ton. Both players found themselves on D4, but it was a relieved Hunk Simpson who hit it first for the draw and shared points. The Queens anticipated the opportunity of at least a point at PB´s, but it didn’t quite work that way and they remain without a point, but probably the happiest team in the league. Some great music greeted the Royals, courtesy of top local DJ Phil Batt. Jan Weston led the

scoring in the first, but Christine Cummins top scored for the Royal ones, however it was Ann O´Keeffe who achieved the rarity of the Royals leading, in consecutive weeks, by hitting D16 for 0-1. The Queens looked likely to increase their lead with Cummins continuing her scoring and Marie Dunne aiding and abetting. John Lane halted the euphoria on D16 for 1-1. The Kirbys, Gilly and Terry gelled well in the third, Terry claiming D4 for the lead. Vi Turner and Ann Griffiths outscored their Pirate opponents leaving Griffiths the unusual out of 37 on D1. Work that one out! The Royal duo of Debbie Wright and Dunne paid dearly for their inability to convert D5 as Michelle Lane slotted home D12 with partner Kirby. O´Keeffe figured again for the Royals in the third doubles by taking out S9,D10 for the last leg before the break and a deserved 3-3 score line. What turned the game at this point was the Pirates using the break to continue practising on the board, whilst the Royals were content to munch their way through the excellent fayre in between consuming numerous gin and tonics. Lyn Fozzard was first Royal singles on narrowly losing out to Lane just missing a D8 by what was described by league sponsor Wright as ¨it was only a gnats whisker away¨. Did she mean ¨cat´s whisker or gnats ….¨. Brian Mears took the Pirates tally to 5 hitting D11, not surprising as everything else he was viewing was also double. A nice 140 from Dunne set up the winning double for the Queens and 5-4. Pirate Gilly saw off the strong challenge of Queen O´Keeffe 79,101 on D5 for at least a draw and point for the hosts. Michelle Lane D16 made it 7 legs and both points, leaving an under the weather Wright still suffering from a cortisone injected shoulder to reduce the deficit. She performed well considering, but foolishly left herself 3, not the easiest number to finish. Opponent Terry Kirby oblivious to any sympathy hit a couple of 80 pluses completing the leg, Wright still trying to hit a single 1. Busters keep the possibility of third place alive with an away win to the Honeys. Mark Filer´s contribution was instrumental in their victory scoring 2x100, 140 and 3 game shots. The usual support from Paul Dowinton 100, Ray Harvey 100, Will Drummond 120,125 and Shirley Roberts 116 helped to keep the pressure on the Honeys. Good performances from the Honeys included a ton from Simone de Lacey, a ton and 140 from Tracey Simpson and a nice 95 out from Hilda Wilkinson T19,D19 when playing former singles champion Babs Warren. SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB By Sheila Cammack. I'm pleased to say that the Les McCraken tournament played at Emerald Isle on 5th April was won by Jean Parkes, Peter Cox, Colin Lindgren & Paul Parkes. On Saturday 12th San Luis played host to the Provincial team. Before the match started we had a minute's silence in remembrance of Rosemary Cairns who passed away so suddenly, our thoughts to Ronnie and family. The match was played as usual in a very good spirit with close competition on both sides. San Luis ladies took 3 points, Bobbie Vanner, Maureen Foulds, Jean Parkes & Sally Cordell won 31-13. Margaret Rogers, Marie Henley, Kath Reid & Shirley Withers drew 16-16. The men had very close results, losing 2 games by just 1 shot 20-21 & 21-22 but did manage 1 win & 2 points from: Allen Bowen, Neil Morrison, Peter Cox & Paul Parkes 18-13. Provincial won 7-5 on points & San Luis won 114-106 on shots! So a good day and a good work out for all. No league matches this week, obviously because of the CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS tournament, Allen Bowen & Keith Jones are through to the final of the Men’s pairs & Colin Jackson is through to the final of the Men's singles, we wish them all the very best for their finals at Vistabella. We are probably the friendliest club in the area but the dress code is mandatory; white shirt or blouse with grey or white trousers, skirt or shorts, the choice is yours. International Lawn Bowls Test Match SPAIN v SCOTLAND Saturday, Sunday 26th / 27th April 2014 Quesada Bowls Club We are pleased to announce that Scotland are bringing their Commonwealth Games Bowls team to Spain for a Test Match later this month. This is a tremendous opportunity for our Spanish players to compete against some of the finest bowlers in the world and is testament how other countries hold Spain in such high regard. Under the guidance of their coach David Gourlay, himself a former champion, his team is full of World Champions and names that you will recognise from television. Darren Burnett, David Peacock and Neil Spiers. LADIES : Laureen Baille, Caroline Brown, Claire Johnson, Margaret Letham and Lorraine Molloy. They will practise on the Thursday / Friday with the Test Match taking place on the Saturday / Sunday. Just watching the Scottish players practice will enhance your own game, we are expecting good crowds on the Saturday/Sunday to witness what should be fantastic bowling. EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB The S.A.B.A. Summer trips have now started (fri 11th April) but it's not been the best start for the Emerald Isle. The E.I. Victors lost to Monte Mar Torros by 4-2, with a shot difference of 118-68, but I have no doubt that we will do better next time. The E.I. Vulcans visited Horadada Hawks, we had a very close match but in the end we lost by 3-2 with one draw and a shot diff of 102-105, how close can you get? We also had a friendly game, which we won by 32-7. Never the less we had a very nice day and a warm welcome from our opponents. Last week we also held the annual Les Mc Cracken Tournament, with 7 clubs playing against the E.I. over 28

By Robin (The Scribe) ends, we found it very tough going. The winning team were San Luis, skipped by Paul Parkes. The runners up were La Siesta, all in all a very enjoyable day. On Monday we were hosts to the Gosforth Empire Touring team, The Emerald Isle won by 9 points to 5 in a very competitive match played in a friendly manner, we all had a good meal at the Emerald Isle, what a fantastic day. SUPERMOTO KICKS OFF IN ALICANTE The first round of the Spanish supermoto championship takes place at the Chicharra Karting circuit in Villena, Alicante on Sunday 27th April. With both of the Ford-Dunn brothers from Murcia competing in the open and Master championship classes the action is sure to be fast and exciting. The Chicharra race circuit features a variety of both high and low speed corners before the riders fire themselves off one of the faster curves into the off road section with high speed jumps and turns before rejoining the circuit to complete the lap. The racing is always close in the tight and technical circuit. Mat and Anthony Ford-Dunn have been busy already this season with both brothers taking a double win each, in their respective classes at the first round of the Catalan championship held back in March. But their next biggest challenge comes over the Easter weekend when the brothers travel to France for the first round of the world championships where they take on the world’s best supermoto racers. The learning curve will be steep but what better way to prepare for the following weekends Spanish championship round at Villena. As usual the Supermotoland race team with their sponsors Advance Moves International Removals and Stratton Motorsports, will be in the race paddock to welcome anyone wishing to attend the Villena

SHIP HISPANIOLA GOLF SOCIETY At La Serena on Monday 14th April 2014. In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this month’s meeting a group of 20 players visited the established course at La Serena under the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. For 2014 we have joined forces with the Lo Marabu GS who play their monthly ‘social game’ the same days as us so we both benefit from the cost economies of scale for booking a larger group than would otherwise be the case The weather forecast was ‘spot on’ with clear blue skies and shorts were the order of the day and the course was in good condition although the greens had a light ‘dusting’ of sand. This months competition included a ‘yellow ball’ team event every team lost the ball on the difficult opening hole with the exception of the team of Mike Probert, Tony Robson, Steen Tidemann and Dave Guest who safely brought the ball home 18 holes later. Despite the difficulty of the course there were some good scores on the day and the winners were as follows: 1st – Wayne Matthews – 42 points, 2nd – Mike Probert – 40 points 3rd – Darren Holden – 37 points. Nearest the pin winners: Par 3 Dave Guest, Par 4 Steen Tidemann, Par 5 Tony Robson We all returned to the Ship Hispaniola in La Mata for a hearty feed and refreshments prepared by Janet and her team with our thanks. Paddy's Point Golf Society - Captain's Day 2014 at Las Colinas

We reported on a hole in one a couple of weeks ago by former Spain International Bowler, Sabrina Marks. Well Deja Vu or just spooky, because the girl went and did it again on Good Friday at Villamartin’s 13th hole. Another bar bill............ Luckily all the ladies were celebrating Kaye Jones's birthday which softened the blow. Looks like the idle chat about insurance might well have to be taken to the next stage.....but surely it couldn’t happen a third time. Watch this space!

In 1973 Elton John suggested that “Saturday night was alright for fighting” but nowadays this pack of wolves prefer to dine, dance and drink in moderation!!! So the May Ball was rescheduled from June to April ( it´s a long story but we once had an Irish Captain) and we gathered at our sponsors, Crystals Retaurant, where we were regally fed and entertained by Sean, Agie, Adam and their team. Prior to this event we had contested for the John Woodey Memorial Trophy which was modestly won for the third year in succession by Brian Layden with 33 points after a count back with Bryan Hirst. Gary Edwards was third with 32 points. Next month forty of us are heading to Roquetas de Mar where we will be playing three rounds over the Serena course for the Wolfpack Open – what stories await ?

A full house of 60 players came along for Sean McCathy's final outing as Captain. The day started with breakfast refreshments at Paddy's Point and then on to our favourite golf course Las Colinas. Group photos were taken and goodie bags issued then it was off to the first tee to watch the captain drive out. Sean although under immense pressure and a few nerves banged one straight down the middle of the fairway. Our starter Pat Kilcourse then did an excellent job of ensuring the remaining 14 four balls got off on time. We had prizes on every hole and two on some, so plenty to play for! Wonderful weather, wonderful course what more could we ask for , good scores for some but not for all! Many thanks to Martin, Ana and all of the staff at Las Colinas for looking after us so well. In the evening 97 players and guests arrived at Las Ramblas for the dinner and presentation, the membership thanked the staff at Las Ramblas for the excellent meal and hospitality. After the meal chairman John Bryan introduced the captain for his speech, with shaking hands and a well rehearsed speech Sean had the the crowd rocking on their seats with his amusing comments on a number of the membership. On a serious note he thanked the membership and committee for

their support over his year. Before the prize giving Myra Coull and Joe Kernan were presented with flowers and a cake to celebrate their 60th birthdays. There were many prizes on the day and tremendous thanks to our numerous sponsors who made this possible. HUB SPOR TS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLA MAR TIN The ever improving La Serena course hosted the Hub golfers´ second summer event recently. With tees in many cases over generously moved forward for maintenance, it was no surprise that a number of the members and guests alike found the course a trifle easier than expected, resulting in some outlandish scores. Some excellent examples included Graeme Jackson´s 38 points with two ¨blobs¨ plus a 5 pointer on the Par 3, third, birded with two shots allowed. Another was the 41 points amassed by Simon Nutz with just one ¨blob¨ but three 4 pointers. I was however playing with the inimitable Jackson whose play belied his 28 handicap, which of course is now history. A very good round with a thoroughly deserved outcome. Man of the day was Gary Gates playing off 17. A handicap last time out that didn’t even claim 30 points, but this time however a massive 42 points even with a no score on the 10th, Par 4. A 4 point birdie on the second got

Gates off to a flyer reaching 21 points on the front 9, repeated on the back for a winning total. Other notable ¨9s¨ came from Jackson 21 points, Nutz 22 points, both on the front 9 and Paul Durrant 21 points (back 9). Shaun Smith couldn’t maintain his 20 points on the front, but amassed enough for a podium finish. The Hub´s next event is at Roda on 4th May, interested golfers should register at the Hub (Villamartin). Hub Society member Trevor Scammell hit an excellent hole in one at the Corvera course last week, with two playing partners and wife Ali to witness the achievement. Cajoled into buying a round of drinks he begrudgingly made his way to the Club House to buy the customary round only to find it closed. NUTRITION Just how serious are you about your golf and would you change your diet and avoid eating some of your favourite ‘junk food’ to improve your golf game? I can’t plan your diet for you because we are all different; however there are some foods that are not conducive to good health, energy and stamina. To improve your diet you should eat foods that are high in nutrition but low in fat, such as, vegetables, fruit, turkey, whole grains, baked or boiled fish, skimmed milk, and egg whites. Rice and fruit juices. Unfortunately this means dumping some of your favourite foods which are loaded with empty calories, such as, pizza, ice cream, cheese cake, red meat, fried chicken, fried fish, gravy, chips, ham and soft drinks. Remember that good nutrition, including plenty of water is fundamental to success, especially under difficult and trying conditions, such as excessive temperatures and humidity. Here are some dietary do’s and don’ts in preparation for and during the round of golf: Don’t play on a full stomach (allow 2 hours for food to digest). Do drink plenty of water before and during the round. Do carry food nutrition bars for instant energy. Do use sports drinks to help avoid dehydration. Do eat apples and bananas for energy. Don’t eat chocolate during the round (avoids sugar highs). Don’t eat heavy foods like burgers & hotdogs (they cause lethargy). Don’t eat late meals (allow time for food to settle before you lie down). Don’t eat desserts (replace these with fruit or frozen yoghurt). In general limit the amount of your sugar and salt intake but remember that a little bit of what you fancy does you good and a little bit of fat helps you maintain your weight but don’t overdo it and get carried away. RIQUELME - SMGS VISIT A good number of members & guests made the inland trek to Riquelme, one of the Murcian Jack Nicklaus courses, for the society's mid month mtg. Similar to his other courses in the area, the designer's usual characteristics are clear to see - raised greens with no shortage of bunkers protecting them. The lake which is flanked on opposite banks with the 2 hardest holes (9 & 18) on the course is very picturesque with the distant rugged hills creating an impressive backdrop. My personal experience on the latter of these holes enabled me to enjoy the scenery & not be overly concerned as to the whereabouts of my ball. In fact after clearly losing an argument with a bush not far from the tee, my ball spent most of the time in my pocket! NTP's were awarded to Tony Smale (5), Darren Hancock (7), Big Mick Cook (15) & Phil Birtwistle (17). The guest prize was picked up by Dave Ferguson with his 25 points. 2 special extra prizes were on offer as well - for those who believe that golf can often be "a game of 2 halves!" These were awarded to 2 players who weren't in the main prizes but who had excelled on one 9 or the other. Tony Smale won for his performance on the front 9 & John Aitchison for the back 9 - each had scored 18 pts on their respective nines & we'll not mention what their totals were! SAN JAVIER GS - CAPTAINS DRIVE-IN Hi Everyone, what a great way to start the new season everyone playing in shorts in April in 25c with a golf course to match the weather a great day was had by all.The Captains drive in for the new man at the top was won by Paul Matthews who play some great golf on the day scoring 38pts with Dave Archer second on 36pts and in third Mick Hardy 35pts. Coming out on top in Division two after some working out when the top 3 all came in with 32pts. On count back after count back Ivor Jones came out on top with Ty Williams second and Joe Flanagan third well played all of you. Nearest the pins where won by the following players Paul Matthews, Barry Beale, Barry Butterworth and Bill McLaughlin. LA MARINA G.S. THE BARCLAY'S TROPHY Slightly reduced numbers this week,due to the Easter Break, but still a successful day. We were contesting the Barclay's trophy with all prizes being donated by our sponsor Barclay's Estate Agent from La Marina. Due to a mix-up with tee-times we were late starting but all seemed to move smoothly along, with a round at about four and a half hours. Highlight of the day was provided by Elspeth, whose mis-hit ball on the par 5 12th was heading for the depths of the lake when it hit the top of the surrounding wall and rebounded at right angles to finish 20 feet from the pin, causing much mirth for the rest of her 4-ball.. Only 3 players managed to hit the greens of the par 3's so all finished nearest the pins. Prizes went to Barry Thorogood,Alan Jones and Carol Marriner. The Barclay's Trophy was won by President Barry Thorogood with a highly commendable 36 pts , which also meant he won the balls for the Gold Division. Winner of the Silver Division was Carol Marriner with 34pts. Thanks go to Paulo at the La Marina Club for the pizza,sausages, chips and Bread and Alioli he provided for our aftermatch high tea. CLARKES BAR G.S. This week we made our way to La Serena for our weekly stableford competition. The course was in excellent shape with true receptive greens that were not too fast but not slow either. The weather was warm and sunny with little or no breeze to start with but that changed later in the round to probably a one club breeze blowing predominantly across the course. It was also one of our members 60th birthday so there was a surprise party on our return to the bar, congratulations to Steve Dunleavy on your birthday and well played scoring 30 points but unfortunately missing out on the prizes. Congratulations also to our winner this week, his first win since October 11th 2012 at Bonalba. Who needed the points more? At the mighty Vicente Calderon stadium on Friday night arguably Atletico did to stay top of La Liga from Real Madrid and Barcelona, but lowly Elche gave the Rojiblancos a fright and nearly earned a hugely welcome point, both goals coming late in the game. Solid, dependable Peligrin, star of last year was still deputisng in the centre of defence for Lomban, but this time the Romanian Sapuranu had a rare start at left back where captain Albacar is still unfit. Everpresent all season Ruben Perez on loan from Atletico was ineligible to play, deputised in midfield by another one of last season’s heroes Rivera. Alongside him in midfield was Carlos Sanchez, Javi Marquez and Carles Gil, with Coro supporting Christian Herrera up front. For Atletico David Villa and Deigo Costa started, a striking combination which has taken Athletico to the top of both the Spanish League and Europe. Manager Diego Simeone is taking on ex-Real manager Jose Mourinho and Chelsea on Tuesday in the Champions League semifinals. Only five minutes had gone when Elche goalkeeper Herrera hurtled off his line to pluck the ball off Costa’s foot following a superb through ball, but steadily Elche settled and came back with a Sanchez long shot that was pushed around the post. From the resultant corner the tall Courtois in the Athetico goal saved Peligrin’s firm header at the second attempt. Just before half-time a cross from the Atletico right grazed Costa’s forehead, coming down for Sosa to put it just wide, the score 0 – 0 at half time.

Only five minutes into the second half and from a long cross into the Elche box Sapuranu was adjudged to have hauled down Costa and was booked. Villa stepped up to take the penalty, but Herrera was on his toes to push away the striker’s soft low shot. It was beginning to look like this might not be Atletico’s day as the expectant home crowd roared on their heroes. Elche bookings began when Coro was booked for a foot-up challenge, and as Rivera tripped Costa and was rightly yellow-carded everyone got excited and tempers flared, Peligrin then following in the book. As usual Elche coach Fran Escriba began to ring the changes, firstly Fidel on for the ineffective Herrera up front, then Boakye for Javi Marquez and finally Aaron replacing Carles Gil. With 20 minutes left and the worried crowd urging the Rojiblancos on, an innocent-looking long corner found the head of defender Miranda. His long, looping header eluded everyone into the far corner of Herrera’s net, 1 - 0. Elche were not finished though as Carlos Sanchez, now playing well at last drove the Franjiverdes forward in search of the equaliser. Two minutes from time it was all over as Sapuranu chased Costa into the area and nudged him, the Romanian booked for his second foul, and rightly sent off - not for the first time this season. This time Diego scored the penalty himself, the final result 2 – 0 an unfair reflection of the match, which left Elche fifth from bottom. Rivals Osasuna and Getafe both drew, Osasuna now level with Elche. Getafe are three points behind, with Valladolid equal, but who are away to Real Madrid on Wednesday. Below third-bottom Getafe are Almeria two points behind with Real Betis bottom on 22 points. The Franjiverdes’s home game next Friday against mid-table Levante will be vitally important - after 26 years away it would be cruel for Elche to be relegated in their first season back. Mucho Elche! CD ACERO - 1 By Steve Hibberd Another merited victory extented Torry's unbeaten run to 4 matches, also gaining sweet revenge for the early December defeat at Acero. With only 3 games remaining, Torry move closer to the play off positions, but unfortunately, it looks like being a case of rueing all those unnecessary dropped points. Dani Meseguer opened the scoring on 24 mins, scoring directly from a free kick. Carrrasco doubled Torry's lead 8 mins later, when he converted Obele's headed cross. Acero fought back, and on 48 mins, Alberto latched on to a Valeolivas clearance, volleying home from way outside the box. Ref Sanchez reduced Torry to 10 men on 82 mins, issuing a 2nd yellow card to Pastor, who had only come on as a 2nd half substitute. He also booked fellow Torry players, Vicente, Obele, Burguillos and Martin, plus 3 opponents. The Orange Tree Golf Society Hacienda Riquelme - Tuesday 15th April Once again this newly formed golf society met to play its fortnightly society event. This week we had our biggest ever turn out of members and guests just showing that this little friendly golf society is going from strength to strength. Thank you all for making this society one of the best within Cabo Roig. On arrival at the course we were once again met with lovely weather, the golfing gods have been shining on us this year. Plus we were once again made very welcome by the staff of one of the best courses on the Costa, unfortunately the green at this course at the moment are in a terrible state and distracts from what is a wonderful course generally. Although saying this hanks must still go to the course staff for making the day go smoothly. This time around with the high number of players we decided to pay a 4 man team event playing 2-3-4, allowing all members to partake and also having a bad hole. We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree Bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig for the presentation and lovely snacks and drinks. Thanks to Chris, Nigel, Lilly, Hannah and Viv for providing these and the wonderful welcome also.
