HUNDREDS VISIT NEW NATURE RESERVE “LAGUNAS DE LO MONTE" Hundreds of people have so far visited the “Lagunas de Lo Monte," the Lo Monte Natural Park in Pilar de la Horadada since it first opened in mid February. In addition to the public visits there have been a number or organised birdwatching trips for virtually all of the Pilar de la Horadada schoolchildren. The park, a protected artificial wetland, covers an area of 10.3 hectares between Pilar de la Horadada and Dehesa de Campoamor. The lake, which has a surface area of 80,000m2 was constructed in 1989 and is now a protected area for birds. So far 36 different species of birds have been observed in the park including the Malvasia Cabeciblanca duck which is in danger of becoming extinct. It is located just north of the town on the site of the Cueva
Fuerte and very close to the Dehesa de Campoamor on the CV941 Mil Palmeras to San Miguel road. "For many people the park has been a new experience," said the Councillor for the Environment , Ivan Romero. “The Lagunas de Monte " is a municipal nature reserve which can now be experienced by local people who no longer have to make long journeys to enjoy such facilities. There are two large lakes around which there are five observation areas allowing onlookers to enjoy the of significant wildlife within the natural space. The Department of the Environment say that they are very pleased with the results and they have already received congratulations from many groups . They say that they are only too happy to provide guided visits to organised groups such as ornithological associations, clubs and societies, disabled associations or associations of housewives. The happy couple built a home and a family. They had two children Philip and Julie, each of whom presented them with grandchildren, Annabelle, Stephanie and Ethan. As well as holding down a number of secretarial jobs, including working for the Foreign Office and later as secretary of Belstead House, Suffolk County Council’s Teacher Residential and FE Centre, Norma was also there to care for the family But she was never one to push herself forward, the star of the show, however, the idea of caring for and supporting others, of playing her part in the team, was always central to her life. The effort she put in to supporting Trevor and the rest of the family in the Colchester Accordion Orchestra, including trips to Europe and the USA, meant that she was regarded as an honorary member of the Orchestra, despite music not being one of her many talents. She also provided stalwart support over 30 years to Trevor as a member of the Caravan Club never wanting a leading role but always there to play her part. When after 40 years of married life in Ipswich Norma and Trevor decided to move out to Spain it was very much history repeating itself. After a number of visits to the area they both felt that they had found their new home and threw themselves into the local community in Pilar de la Horadada. They quickly made a wide circle of friends, both Spanish and Expatriate. Together they learned to speak Spanish, although characteristically, Norma was more concerned to get the grammar right – but then she always was a lady who liked to get things correct. Above all Trevor and Norma threw themselves into the support of their local football team, UD Horadada. Norma had always had an interest in football. Her father had once played for Ipswich, and she became the first secretary of The Supporters Club, the Horadada Reds. Norma wouldn’t have liked a fuss to be made about what she did but she very much enjoyed being part of the community, she enjoyed other people’s traditions and ideas. In so doing so she made a wonderful contribution to the lives of everybody with whom she came into contact life and she will be sadly missed by husband Trevor, her family and her friends. Following the service Trevor made contact with the Leader to say how very pleased he and his family were with the service, performed by the Rev Christopher Scargill, and with the support of local dignitaries and Norma’s many friends. Donations totalled 430 euro of which 150 will be donated to Campoverde A Team and the remainder to CARITAS. He asked that he used this opportunity to thank everyone involved.

CASTELLON AIRPOR T SET TO OPEN BY CHRISTMAS 2014 A contract to operate the airport has been signed for the next 20 years.
Long considered a moth-balled testament to lavish waste by the regional government of Valencia, the new provincial airport of Castellón may well now open before Christmas of this year, after standing vacant for three years. In a surprise announcement this week, the president of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, met with delegates from a Canadian group, led by the president of SNCLavalin Aeropuertos, Youssef Sabeh, in preparation for signing over the running of the Aeropuerto de Castelló for a period of 20 years. Both sides initiated the document signing process with a view to conclusion as soon as practical, probably as early as next month, but in any event with a view for the airport being open to traffic by November of this year at the latest. The specifications of the tender state a fixed period of five months from the signing of the contract until the opening of the airport, three months for certifying SNC-Lavalin as the management company and two and a half months until the start of operations. The company will also have 45 days to recruit and train staff from the signing of the contract. Therefore, if the plans continue at the pace they have begun, once signed in May, the airport would be operational by November.
In order for the Canadian group to qualify as the contract holder, they must have a minimum registered capital of 2.5 million euro and at the time of the agreement, and must spend at least 1 million. In total, their anticipated investment in the airport is worth 3 million euro. The president of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra, said that once the contract is signed, the company will present a number of “specific projects” for the airport and will then talk about the possible start dates for flights. Much like a similar project in the region of Murcia, the airport in Castellon has been the subject of criticism over the last few years, even this week the regional parliamentary representative of the Esquerra Unida group, Marina Albiol, demanded answers as to why the regional government spent 26 million euro of public money in sports sponsorship for the airport, when the airport has been closed since its completion in 2011. During its history, a number of considerations had been put to the government, including one possibility of using the airport as a car racing track, or converting it into a shopping complex, but it does now look that at least one airport will finally realize its intention of becoming a hub for the airways.

A PRETTY ROUNDABOUT AND A HEADACHE FOR TORREVIEJA
The parks and gardens department of Torrevieja town hall has completed work on a roundabout in the city, in order to improve the image of one of the main routes into the centre. The roundabout, located on the streets of Calle Gotzone Mora and Calle César Mateo Cid, has been improved with the installation of coloured elements, rock features and a wall which looks similar in style to the Gaudi inspired architecture in other places of the city, with wavy lines to instil a feeling of bright, happy emotions.
Meanwhile, in other roundabout news, the promoter JOST, who were ordered to demolish an illegally built roundabout on the Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, in the vicinity of the Las Lagunas College, has failed to comply with the demolition notice issued by the town hall on the 14th of March. As the time to respond by action has now expired, the town hall will start to fine the company and may subsequently demolish the roundabout themselves, forwarding the final bill to the company who built the roundabout and has been the subject of a legal battle since 2012.

PLASTIC BAG USE CUT BY HALF hoppers in Spain have reduced plastic carrier bag use by almost 50% in five years, according to data released by the environment ministry on Monday. The data reveals that the number of single-use, nonbiodegradable bags used per year has decreased from 315 units in 2007 to 170 units in 2012. The information was released following questions by the socialist opposition as to how the country is progressing towards the Europe-wide total ban and an 80% reduction by the year 2019. However, despite the significant decrease, the use of these bags is still indicating an average of one every two days, prompting calls for faster and more direct action, as well as awareness initiatives such as a “bag-free” day. The government has stressed that a waste prevention program was signed in 2013, to enable management of the bags in the design phase, production and distribution, as well as tackling the problem through “awareness and reuse campaigns as well as voluntary agreements” with both consumers and
S
suppliers. The main concerns over these plastic bags are that they are made of polyethylene, which is a petroleum product, and it takes around 1,000 years for a polyethylene bag to break down, but they don’t biodegrade, they photodegrade, breaking down into smaller toxic bits which contaminate soil and waterways. They then enter the food chain when animals accidently ingest them. The amount of petroleum used to make a single 1 plastic bag would drive a car about 11 meters.

In December, 2012, the roof collapsed in the Luis Vives school in Valencia, prompting the regional government to adopt a reactionary process of checking all schools for structural damage. Now, the results of the Plan de Revisión de Infraestructuras Educativas reveal that one in four schools is at risk of structural deficiency and damage. A total of 396 schools older than 40 years have been inspected across the region, 202 of which were in the Valencia province, 119 in Alicante and the
remaining 75 in Castellon. An additional 300 schools which are not yet 40 years old were checked, with inspectors looking for the most commonly occurring deficiencies. Of those schools inspected, 170 of them require action to “ensure stability and security”, especially concerning deficiencies in the electrical installations. The education department has set about carrying out the most urgent repairs, and in fact have worked on 120 of the most urgent faults since stage 3 of the plan went into operation in January. So far, according to data released by the ministry of education this week, 39 high priority repairs have now been completed.

PENSIONS AND THEIR TAX IMPLICATIONS
o in this March´s budget the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced changes and proposed changes to the UK pension system, what he failed to highlight were the tax implications that these changes will bring, we can only wonder why. Firstly he proposed that from April 2015 individuals could en-cash all of their UK Private pensions , what he didn´t mention was the tax, 25% can be taken once as a tax free lump sum and the rest taxed at the applicable income tax rate up to 45%. He expects to raise at least £3billion extra tax from this. He then made it clear that expatriates will have to decide whether they are either in or out of the UK tax system. So how does the UK government decide you are an expat for tax purposes; it is said it will be someone who is no longer a UK resident and resides and pays taxes in another country. If you are an expatriate you also may be affected by the following
S
changes: Capital gains tax is to be introduced in the UK in 2015 for non-residents, so if you are an expat and you sell a property in the UK, irrespective as to whether you have been renting it out or not you will have to pay capital gains tax in the UK. It cannot be claimed as a main residence because you are non-resident in the UK. The Chancellor has also started looking at scrapping the UK personal income tax allowance for expats i.e. getting rid of the £10,000 a year earnings limit before you have to start paying income tax. So any expats drawing pension income in the UK – including the State pension will have to pay tax of at least 20%. This will also be the same for income gained from other sources in the UK by expats. The Chancellor wants to stop the transfer of final salary pensions and UK government pensions. There are ways to protect yourself from the above changes especially when it comes to pensions, avoiding the personal allowance tax trap could be as straightforward as switching your UK pension into an offshore Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS). QROPS investors pay income tax on their pension payments based on where they are tax resident, not at UK tax rates. JUDGE POSTPONES ORIHUELA GOVERNMENT THREAT HEARING
The political opposition of Orihuela has been dealt another blow this week, as the judge in Elche hearing the case relating to the blocking of a censure motion that would have led to a change in government has postponed the hearing until the 14th of May. This is the second time that this particular hearing has been postponed, firstly in February, due to a lack of information, and again on Thursday of this week after two hours of deliberation. The likelihood of confusion had already been anticipated, due to the complexity of the case being presented, and the fact that two lawyers were to represent the defendants in the case, one appointed by the Mayor, the other by the committee of the town hall, chaired by the PP who would therefore be acting on both sides of the legal scales. The mayoral appointed lawyer, José Luis Martínez Morales, refused to give up the right to defend his clients in the case, despite the appointment of Carlos Bernabé by the PP and CLR association. The Partido Popular group have accused the government team of “torpedoing” the judicial process, considering it unfair that the defenders in this case should have six lawyers to defend the eleven councillors of the Los Verdes, PSOE and two unassigned, namely Bob Houliston and Asuncion Mayoral, much preferring the option for them to choose the council for both sides in this case, the PP deciding on the lawyer to defend against the case they are instrumental in bringing to court. The hearing in this case is postponed until the 14th of May, the day before the current head of the Partido Popular of Orihuela, Pepa Ferrando, is herself in court on corruption charges.

FIRE FIGHTERS BATTLE BLUE LAGOON BLAZE
Fire fighters battled a potentially dangerous forest fire in the Blue Lagoon and El Mirador area of the Torrevieja and Orihuela coastline on Wednesday evening. At around 18:00, 3 fire engines, a helicopter, specialist forest fire fighters and a water plane were all helping to control the situation. The fire is believed to have been started by a child under 14 years of age, who had attempted to extinguish the blaze, before alerting the emergency services of what had happened. The Valencia region has been on alert for the risk of forest fires for a couple of weeks, with the hot dry weather and winds increasing the risks. A number of serious fires have already devastated parts of Spain this year, with the authorities pleading for extra vigilance by everybody to try to minimise the risk.
DEATH ANNOUNCED OF FORMER ORIHUELA MAYOR The death was announced this week of former Mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Lozano Espinosa, at the age of 77. The socialist politician led the municipality between November of 1982 and May of 1983, taking over from the first elected mayor, Francisco García Ortuño during a particularly volatile time for Orihuela. The city held a day of mourning in respect for the loss of the mayor, with flags flying at half mast.

MORE ORIHUELA PLANNING VIOLATION NOTICES ISSUED
The planning department of Orihuela town hall has announced a further nine notices being issued for infringements of urban planning laws, four of which are demolition notices, the remaining are financial penalties totalling 11,644.54 euro. Of the nine cases in this latest batch of clampdowns, seven of them are on the Orihuela Costa, the remaining two in the surrounding villages. According to the head of the planning department, Antonio Zapata of the PSOE, there are still some six hundred cases pending, all of which will be resolved in due course. Zapata also explained that his department are mostly dealing with two different types of urban offenses, one of which corresponds to “minor works”, which seem to mostly take place in the coastal area, believed to be largely due to the “ignorance” of laws by property owners, which collectively make the largest chunk of disciplinary proceedings. These could be simply due to lack of planning permission, or sometimes where owners may believe they have sought appropriate permission, but without going through the town hall. The second batch of infringements, for which there are a lesser number, are violations of the Urban Law Valenciana, with homes and structures built on undeveloped or incorrectly classified land, this is more common in the surrounding villages, although not exclusively. Some of these infringements can be legalised with the appropriate application of licensing, others may take longer to resolve, as they may fall outside the immediate jurisdiction of the town hall.

A COPPER'S LOT IS NOT AN EQUAL ONE A workers union representing members of the Guardia Civil is calling for action to bridge the obvious lack of integration of women in the workplace, this week highlighting how body armour is significantly deficient for female officers. For over a quarter of a century, women have been accepted into the Guardia Civil, and yet, according to the union, there are a number of gender specific issues which are simply forgotten or ignored. Frequently prepared to put their own lives on the line to save others, the acquisition of Personal Protective Equipment is something which grows with both the needs of the force, and the threat or risk put on to them. The first solution to the body armour problem was to assume that all women could were the most gender neutral model of the vest, simply a standard vest in size small. However, as times changed, the fact that women are individually as different in places as men, the Guardia Civil took action in 2012 and purchased a number of units specifically designed, manufactrured and built for the female form, purchasing 126 armoured vests. However, those vests were to be kept in “operational reserve”, and have never seen the light of day, with even the procurement and provision under questions. The union are therefore calling for urgent action to solve this dilemma, as even if those 126 vests were put into service, there would still be a considerable shortfall of the 5,000 female officers in service across Spain. “We keep working for equal opportunities in our workplace”, is the banner under which the union are asking for the immediate prioritizing of this problem to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of female officers, in addition to solving the obvious discomfort that an ill-fitting male design may bring.

MISSING SAR HELICOPTER RECOVERED FROM THE SEA BED An underwater robot submarine, “Rémora II”, located the wreck of a Search and Rescue helicopter that crashed into the sea in the waters of the Canary Islands in March, killing all 4 crew members, who were still on board. The aircraft, from 802 Squadron based at the Gando airbase, has been located 2,632 metres below the surface, about 30 nautical miles southwest of Fuerteventura, during a search of the area around the last known location of the Super Puma helicopter. Military were sent to the scene to assess the location and status of the aircraft, to ascertain how, and if it was possible, to recover both the helicopter and the bodies of Captain Daniel Pena, Lieutenants Carmen Ortega and Sebastián Ruiz, and Sergeant Carlos Caramanzana. Described as a “complex and difficult task”, the Spanish ministry of defence contracted an American specialist recovery and recovery company, Phoenix International, at an initial cost of 3.2 million euro, although this was later revised to 5 million, who set about recovering the helicopter and crew. Despite initially looking like the aircraft would be recovered intact, the six-hour operation proved more difficult than anticipated when the nose and tail broke away from the
fuselage during the lift. As the main chunk of fuselage was brought to the surface, it then became clear that only two of the bodies remained inside, although it was impossible at the site to determine who they were. The two bodies recovered were transferred by another Super Puma helicopter to the naval base for examination, meanwhile, the robot submarine was sent back into the water to try to locate the two now missing crew, but was unsuccessful. A number of other body parts were later recovered from the sea, with foren-
sic tests set to be carried out to ascertain if they belong to those remaining crew members. In the early hours of Friday morning, the aircraft was brought by ship to the Las Palmas naval base on the island of Gran Canaria. Despite a military spokesperson confirming that the search for the other two aircrew will be continuing, the search was called off on Friday evening, as it was now considered “unlikely” to find the remaining bodies of those two missing aircrew who dedicated theirs to saving others.

removed. And, to avoid any further problems in the future, Drips and Leaks can create a vent in the wall and install a ventilation screen so that should you have any plumbing issues in the future the, the problem is easily accessible. POOR PLANNING DECISIONS RESPONSIBLE FOR CALA MOSCA SAGA t seems that the small piece of undeveloped land along the coastline of Orihuela Costa continues to raise questions and raise strong opinions, some of which go right to the heart of the issues about the absurdity of Orihuela Costa being part of the greater Orihuela municipality. For years the home owners of Orihuela Costa have fought an uphill battle to try and preserve this one small piece of natural greenery, the only undeveloped spot for the 12 kilometres on Orihuela Costa. The people of the coast have made their views known through petitions, demonstrations and even through the various departments of the European Parliament. The battle to save this open ground from the ravages of yet another coastal development project is still unresolved, but small rays of hope exist. The questions that need answering about the intention to develop this land is how and where the planning decisions are made and do the planning decisions actually consider the benefits for the residents who actually live on Orihuela Costa? Clearly the owner of the land feels that he has an undeniable right to develop this land in any way he sees fit. This is a very debatable premise. If the owners of any plot of land had the rights to develop their holding in the manner of their choice there would be no need for planning departments or restrictions due to zoning policies, etc. The reality is that just because someone owns land infers no automatic right to how it can and should be developed. There are numerous examples where unscrupulous developers have erected houses on designated green belt land and these homes have subsequently been demolished. The simple fact is that owning land does not confer development rights! Not here in Spain or in any other European country. Cala Mosca has never been developed. It has always been open land without a house, throughout its history. The land is unique in that it is
I
one of the few sites in the Iberian peninsula with a couple of unique species of fauna and The Orihuela Mayor was in Brussels with Bob Houliston recently flora. Hence the owner of the land cannot where they petitioned the European Parliament claim that it is redevelopment. It is not. This land has never been developed so the current plans by the developer are for something new. The only people to benefit from the proposed development of the land are the developer and Orihuela Council though building permits and future taxes. The builder would make a fat profit. The inhabitants of Orihuela Costa would receive no benefits and would lose a valuable green lung along the coast. It is only too evident to anyone living along Orihuela Costa that the welfare and wellbeing of the inhabitants of the coast are never considered when planning approval is granted for any patch of Costa land. ITV - 3,200,000 FAILED VEHICLES IN 2013
Data released by the DGT traffic department states that a total of 18% of vehicles put to the mandatory vehicle inspection test in 2013 failed their first inspection, therefore a total of 3,200,000 vehicles were not considered to meet the minimum safety requirements. The figure is 2.8% higher than that of 2012, and the data reveals that there has been a general increase in the number of major and minor defects in the vehicles. In absolute numbers, the number of serious defects was almost six million, 3.3% higher than in 2012. The most serious defects were found in the lighting and signals, with 23.8%, followed by axles, wheels, tires and suspension with 22.2%, and brakes with 16.3% failures. In terms of minor defects, these were found to be a lot higher than 2012, with a total of 13,455,758 minor faults recorded, an 8.7% increase over the figures from 2012. The ITV stations around the country inspected nearly 18 million vehicles in the last year, 5.5% more than in 2012, which the DGT has put down to a progressive increase in the age of the private fleet of vehicle. Of course with such high unemployment levels in Spain, as well as increased cost of living, higher taxes and generally crippling austerity measures, renewing the car is not the top priority for many a strug-

gling family. However, there is a concern over the safety of road users and vehicles, with a spokesperson for the DGT saying that, “There is still a significant number of vehicles on the road, around two million in fact, with an expired ITV”, whilst also pointing out that older vehicles are more prone to major faults and subsequent failure, and so many owners choose to ignore the mandatory inspection or repairs, thus breaking the law. The reality being that there are many who simply could not afford the repairs, but the test is designed in the interest of safety of all road users.
SCHUMACHER DENOUNCED FOR SPANISH CAR ACCIDENT Racing driver Michael Schumacher has been denounced for a traffic violation in Spain, after a rental car he was driving in November is alleged to have failed to give way to a motorcycle, resulting in the collision of the two vehicles and injuries to the rider. The accident is said to have occurred on the A-5062 main road in the Seville town of Bormujos at around 18:50 on the 17th of November, 2013, when the German driver, who was on a private visit to Spain, drove his hired Audi A-4 into the path of the motorcycle having failed to give way. When colliding with Schumacher's car, the rider, Francisco M.A., fell off his bike and suffered a broken wrist which was operated on by doctors. The rider is also claiming damages for clothing, a watch, and other items. The incident occurred just a few days before the accident when he was skiing which rendered him seriously injured.
Although vehicle thefts are a common occurrence, the mystery surrounding this case is that in the last two months around a dozen vehicles have been stolen, all very similar in style and look, and all have been abandoned in the same location on the road between the towns of Chests and Pedralba. Although terrorists group ETA have been known to target similar looking vans for their campaigns, it is not thought that this situation is related to terrorist activities, but is in connection with a gang of copper and cable thieves, as police have recovered some items of that description in vehicles located after their theft. The police have also come close to catching those involved, but they have so far managed to escape on foot, through the fields in the vicinity of where the vehicles are left. On Monday of this week a routine patrol observed a van that matched the description of those being stolen driving along the infamous road. The patrol attempted to stop the van, but the occupants, who appeared to be Spanish, fled up an embankment and through orange groves on foot. The officers were able to recover a “large amount” of iron and copper of “unknown origin”. This is now the second close call for the thieves, following a similar near capture just last month. As part of the investigation, the police are now visiting scrap metal dealers to try to find if anybody has tried to sell material matching the type recovered, and if anybody matches the descriptions of those seen fleeing. In the meantime, officers are no doubt on alert for the next appearance of the mystery machine in white, in the hope of catching those involved red-handed, and finally stopping the thieves from getting away with it any longer.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Be Careful Of What We Wish For he whole concept of ‘Brits in Europe’ is a controversial area that I know many expats living in Spain get very heated about. Indeed, it is one subject that is a hot topic of conversation in many Brit bars and gatherings. However, it is also fair to say that many expats really don't care at all about the issue, and have no interest in voting in the forthcoming European Elections.
T
I care passionately about the whole idea of being a European. For many years, I have regarded myself firstly as a European, secondly, as British and thirdly as an Englishman. For me, it is one of the best things that has happened, both politically and culturally, during my lifetime. From the moment that Britain joined Europe it meant that any European could live and work in any other European country as equals; well, that’s the theory, although we all know that there can be variations in this interpretation. I fervently hope that Britain stays within the European family if there is ever a referendum on the issue. Personally, I would hate Britain to be on the outside and looking in with no influence about what is happening in Europe, but feeling the impact of any decisions made. Many of our European friends, the Germans, French and Spanish in particular, are bewildered by Britain's lukewarm attitudes to Europe. It is true that Spanish attitudes towards Europe are changing from one of blind acceptance and trust to a healthier one that is beginning to question and challenge some of the more obscure rules that appear
from Brussels from time to time. Even so, the bond is strong and it would be unusual to visit any official building, building development or project without seeing three flags flying: the Canarian and Spanish flags flying alongside that of the European Union. Compare that with the UK where seeing the EU flag flying anywhere is unusual. Britain has always been an awkward partner, made worse by the years of recession. As history teaches us, during periods of economic downturn, there is a tendency to look for scapegoats; be it the treatment of Jews, gays and travellers in Germany during the Second World War, to negative attitudes expressed by some in the UK towards Poles, Bulgarians and Lithuanians in current times. It is a human reaction to group together and to blame someone or something else, even if it defies logic. It is also worth noting that many observers, and particularly those from the US, see Britain as currently being in a highly beneficial and unique position within Europe; remaining outside the Eurozone and retaining its own currency. I often despair of expat bar room discussions from those who vehemently demonstrate their hatred of all things European and even their host country, which in the main has welcomed them so warmly. It is not that long ago when some of our friends needed a work permit to work in Spain, so that they were unable to purchase property or to start their own businesses until Britain became a member of the EU. One can only imagine what would happen if Britain did eventually pull out of Europe. The signs are already that the barriers to free movement would once again reappear and that Britain would be isolated from its European counterparts in many ways. The British Government’s political yet popular decisions to restrict immigration, and use of the health service and benefits to migrants
from European countries are already beginning to show as retaliatory moves against British expats in some countries. I often hear from British expats in several European countries who tell me of their problems with health, unemployment, pensions and social benefits that were unknown a short time ago. Health services for expats, in particular, have been severely curtailed in some countries, including Spain, in recent months. The global recession, as well as a less welcoming policy towards expats, has led to less flexibility and generosity towards expats than have been experienced in the past. Politicians need to be fully aware that actions taken in Britain are reflected in other member states, and it is British expats who suffer the often-unintended consequences. As expats, let us be careful of what we wish, and vote, for. The Attitude of Gratitude By Penny Wing THE POWER OF BEING GRATEFUL GRATEFUL It does seem as if in these challenging times, people are focusing on what they don’t have rather than what they do have. The Spiritual Law of Attraction states that “what you focus on you bring in ” so if you are constantly moaning about lack of money or lack of things, that is exactly what you will continue to have in your life. I do appreciate how difficult that can be at times but cannot stress enough how important it is to make a conscious effort to be grateful. Being thankful will attract more positive energy into your life and therefore, will help to improve your happiness and health. Gratitude is an emotion and a virtue – it’s a knowing awareness that we are the receivers of something good. Grateful people have been found to report higher levels of positive emotions, satisfaction with their lives, vitality and optimism and are less likely to suffer from stress and depression. By practising the attitude of gratitude you can reduce your stress and take control of your happiness. When we start to bring gratitude into our daily lives, it impacts on us in three ways: on a psychological level we feel more alert, more active and more productive, on a physical level we sleep better, exercise more and generally feel better about our health, and on a social level our relationships start to become more satisfying: we start to feel more connected to other people and therefore feel less isolated and lonely.
EASY WA WAYS TO BECOME MORE GRATEFUL GRATEFUL Keep a gratitude book This is such an easy, simple thing to do yet over time so powerful. Every day sit down and list at least 5 things that you are grateful for. These can be general things such as a lovely, sunny day, the love of your partner, your health or specific things such as a favour someone did for you or a friend visiting you and making you feel good. When you actually see the list written down, it will make you realise how much you do have to be grateful for. Some days you may find it easier to do than others but it is the process of doing it that is important; it will attract more positivity into your life! Remember the challenging times To be grateful for what you have now, it helps to remember the times when life was more challenging. When you remember how difficult life used to be and see how far you have come the contrast makes you appreciate how much better life is for you now. Go through grateful motions Grateful motions include saying thank you, writing letters of gratitude and smiling. When you do these things you will feel more grateful as well as making the people around you feel good! Think about the bigger picture Always think about the bigger picture e.g. if you are a woman reading this you will have had an education, the chance to earn your own money and the right to choose your partner. There are millions of women in the world who will never have that opportunity. It really is a simple matter of choice: you can choose to be grateful or not but if you wish to attract more abundance of all things good into your life then you must practice the attitude of gratitude. Good luck and enjoy! Penny is a qualified Diana Cooper Angel & Spiritual Master Teacher, Usui /Angelic Reiki Master Teacher & holistic therapist. 180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams x3, Paul Durrant x4, Lee Maiden x3, Alex Nikolov (Meerkats), Sid Cross x4 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer, Irene Russell, Paul Dowinton (Busters), Mike Smith, Mel Dawson (Breakaways Bears), John Linton (Gogarty´s) Highest finish. Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 Shortest leg. 14 darts Lee Maiden, Meerkats Hub Hyenas showed a little of the form they are capable of when they faced this week´s challenge of Porterhouse. An in form Cyril Harrison inspired the Hyenas to a comfortable victory with some handy finishing. Fresh from his recent individuals success, the new Monday league singles champion got the hosts away to a flyer with a nice clean 52 out (S20,D16), even after the ever youthful Peter Ayres had threatened the leg with a 133. Ray Sanderson levelled straight away finishing the required 701 with two darts S17,D10. A strong Hyenas second triple of Joe Miller, Jim Underwood and Harrison took the third leg via Underwood on D13. The home side had advantage of throw in the next but Shaun Smith and Simon Williams couldn’t find any three figure scores as did Ray Hayes hitting his customary 100. Smith however didn’t have any problems in the finishing department and promptly took out the leg on D10. A lively second doubles followed, captain Sanderson leading the way with a ton countered by some great throwing from Lee Holtham 2x100 and a 121 to set up partner Miller to close the leg on S20,D20. Harrison continued his impressive form in the final doubles against the Rouffignacs, Con and Yvonne, with a T16,D20 two dart out and 5-1 at half time. The match resumed after some tasty Hub fish and chips, captain Williams deciding to keep the momentum going by placing Harrison first in the singles. No tons from the singles champion, that was left to opponent Hayes, but a third winning double of the night this time on D20, gained the Hub at least a point with his side´s sixth leg. Underwood figured next v. Sue Sanderson hitting a big 121 to leave a shot. Four arrows later the match was won on D16. Husband Ray was next to stop the slide and looked likely after hitting a ton. Opponent Miller, himself a 2013 singles champion, came back at the captain with two tons of his own, completing the 501 on D16. The tons continued in the next, Rouffignac the younger (Yvonne) and Andy Brooker contributing to the three figure club, the latter hitting D8, for 9-1. A below par Ayres couldn’t prevent Smith 100 from taking out D20, that was left to Brian Nash who put in a creditable shift to take the last with a ton and D9 for a 10-2 result. A trifle surprising the extent of the Pirates defeat, but an in form Hyenas side is a difficult team to beat. The Meerkats are now one game away from a remarkable unbeaten
season. A comfortable but unexpected victory over second placed Que Pasa leaves them only one match away from a 26 game run that could include 24 wins, 2 draws and 0 losses. Standing in their way is Busters next week, who themselves have only lost 3 times. Home advantage will go to the Playa Flamenca side, who are expected to have a full squad out for the final game of the season. As do most teams, the Kats struggled to finish the opening 1001 leg. Fortunately three tons from Lee Maiden, Pat Abrams and Alex Nikolov game them a cushion to break down 40 points to D1, the honour going to Paul Durrant. Abrams added another ton in the next, with captain Derek Kingsbury adding one of his own, the third member of the trio Durrant could only muster a 95 but finished the leg on D6. Kevin Wood hit the Eagles first ton, a nice 113 which was enough to give Eddie Klimonis the opportunity of taking out D4 for 1-2. Abrams continued his battering of the treble with 100 and 95 in the first doubles, but it was Joe Cuyt who won the point on D20, to make it all square. Wood added a further ton in the second doubles against Graham Todd and Durrant, but Todd was really on fire with some powerful scoring including a 95 and 117. Durrant mopped up the remaining 28 points with one dart for 2-3. Klimonis and captain Den Hall had throw in the last leg before half time and traded tons with Nikolov and Kingsbury. Doubles opportunities were missed by both sides, leaving Nikolov to bag D5 for 2-4 with a smile on father in law Kingsbury´s face. Abrams was on first after the break to face the very capable Wood. A tentative leg was completed on D8 by the Kat to give the visitors a 3 leg advantage. Klimonis was next, with the throw, to play Durrant. The Kat started with a 125 and 85, Klimonis replying with 95. A 140 however put the leg out of reach for Que Pasa Durrant gaining his fourth double of the night on D16 and an ensured draw and point. Nikolov D5 won the match for the Kats with Kingsbury following on D20 for 8 legs. Jim Storey gained one back for the hosts pegging out on D8 after two valuable tons. John Eyre concluded the match against Cuyt, with 100, 132 and D2 for 3-9. Que Pasa showed glimpses of their high league position but not enough in this match against a team where scores and finishing come from all sides. A tremendous match played in the right spirit by both sides. Plenty of big scores when the Pint Depot Kings visited Playa Flamenca´s Busters bar, that also included a maximum and a ton plus out. The Kings gave a good account of themselves taking the score to 4 apiece before Busters reeled off the last 4 singles to win a match that was far closer than the score line suggests. Matt Cummins 125 and Dave Wright 85 were the Kings main scorers in the first however, Busters secret weapons the Russells countered with Bill 95 and Irene 128 setting up Ray Harvey to finish the 1001 on D16. Some decent scoring from the Kings trio of Ron Cornelius, Frankie Wurrorck and Martin Bynorth, couldn’t cope with an impressive maximum from Paul Dowinton, two 80 pluses from Julie Hallett and some very steady scoring from Mark Filer culminating in an 88 out from the latter on D20. Wright lynch pinned the second triple regularly hitting the T20, Harvey responded for Busters in a similar fashion, but it was Cummins to the rescue on D7. Eddie Fozzard 101 and 120 seemed to have done enough to take the leg for all square in the first doubles but Dowinton spoiled the chance on D7 for 3-1. Cummins 121,83 and Wright seemed to have the edge over Filer 100,95 and Shirley Roberts, it was however Roberts to conclude the 601 on D2. At 4-1 down the Kings needed some drastic action. Good scores from Bynorth and a 140 from Gary Minor were cancelled out by some great throwing from Harvey 100,122 and 95. It proved insufficient as Bynorth wrapped up the leg for a half time score of 4-2. Cummins continued where he left off in the pairs with further excellent scores to include a ton in a leg where Will Drummond just couldn’t get going. The King used one dart for D10 and 4-3. Irene Russell 100,100,60 put the frighteners on opponent Wright in the second single who had to dig deep with 85,100,81 of his own and finally D8 to make the match all square, three legs in a row for the visitors and a possibility of a point or even two in the following 40 minutes. Dowinton just got the better of Fozzard, both scoring well, the Buster taking out D18 to regain the lead. Harvey enjoyed the throw in the tenth leg playing Wurrorck and kicked off with 85 and 81, his opponent scoring similarly. Leaving 136 the visitor would have expected another throw, not
on this occasion, two treble 20s and the third dart in the middle of D8 for a maximum 136 out, the second highest in the league this year, gained the hosts at least a draw. Minor faced Filer in the penultimate singles, both players score for score until Filer requiring 64 used all three darts to ensure the win and two points for the hosts. Tons apiece in the last from Bynorth and Roberts ended with Roberts taking out D1 for 8-4. Gogarty´s John Linton´s warming up for the imminent singles knock out with a maximum in the opening leg against the Tavern. It didn’t however win them the leg as the Taverners took an early lead. Brian Newton levelled for Gogarty´s using the bull and then Ernie Wilson nailed his double for the Gophers to take a 2-1 lead. The Taveners could only manage one of three pairs and faced an uphill task at the break losing 4-2. Steve Woods increased the hosts lead with a fine 64 out in the first leg after the break. John Graziour and then Ivan Jones 100 won the following two legs to give the visitors a chance of a result. Linton however realised the threat and duly won the next to ensure a draw, Newton claiming the match and points for Gogarty´s on D16. Mike Snow hit two tons for the Tavern, which was eclipsed by Linton´s 180 and 2x100. The Pint Depot Queens are still looking for their first victory and this week came very close with 5 of the 12 available legs won. Marie Dunne top scored for the Royal family on 114, but couldn’t quite convert some good throwing into a winning double. Sue Wiles managed two winning doubles for the Bears as did Sarah Simpson who won the match for Breakaways against Dunne. Best leg of the night was the game between Wiles and Ann O´Keeffe. Both players acquitted themselves well, scoring wise, Queen Ann preventing her opponent from a third winning double. Can the Queens gain a win or even a point in their last game of the season against Hattons Honeys? Both captains, Rachael Broadhead and Simone de Lacey are predicting wins for their respective sides. Talking of de Lacey she is another player warming up for singles success. Consistent scoring throughout the match against PB´s will stand her in good stead for the forthcoming singles semi finals. The Honeys took an early lead at PBs via Tracey Simpson, only for Michelle Lane to level after the first triple. John Lane got the Pirates into the lead after 3 on D8. Lane´s wife Michelle played the first doubles with Terry Kirby and made it a Lane double on D2. De Lacey and Simpson saw off the Pirates challenge in the next, Simpson posting D10. Some great scores in the final leg before the break gave John Lane the opportunity of yet another Lane double, which he duly took for 4-2. Lane hit 137 whilst Hilda Wilkinson replied with 117. Simpson gained her third double of the evening on D2 to reduce the deficit, followed by Ray Green levelling the match on D7 after a 95 and 100. Phil de Lacey gained the lead for the Honeys on D16 and then the visitors ensured the draw when Julie McCulloch closed the next leg on D2 against Michelle Lane. With the match possibly slipping away from the hosts, Gilly Kirby revived the Pirates with a fine win over Denise Green. The match was now down to the last leg and each side´s best player of the night John Lane v. Simone de Lacey. A nice ton from the latter didn’t rattle Lane who continued to score steadily. De Lacey left a shot as did Lane who required 44. A single 12 followed by a D16 gave both sides a deserved point. League semi-finals 8th May to include pairs and mens and ladies singles. Finals and Presentation on May 15th will include cup final, pairs final, ladies and mens singles finals. Both dates at the Breakaways venue. La Siesta Bowls Report By Norman Adcroft SABA Hurricane and Harrier Division - The Wasps played their second Match away to La marina and hopes were high of a repeat of their first game last week when they picked up all the points. Not so this week but they did manage to come away with a creditable win 9-5 winning three rinks, drawing one and taking the shots 95-109. Not too bad a result considering an away venue and played in very strong windy conditions. Our winners were, Carol Broomfield, Dave Eccles, Brian Fraser 21-9, Dave Davies, Pat and Vic Moore 19-10, Anne and Robert Heath, Dave Livesey 21-8, and our drawn rink Joy Gardiner, Doug Smith and Sue Jordan 19-19. The Hornets played a strong Horadada Hawks side and what a difference two shots can make! We lost two rinks by one shot each and the overall shots by 2... With two winning rinks, Sheila and Roy Millward, Malcolm Drew 23-12, and Penny Porter, Les Rawson, John Taylor 2417, the result was 4-10 to Horadada but could so easily could have been a 10-4 victory. Well played Hornets anyway. Saturday Hamper winners 19th April, Dave Livesey, John Ball and Dave Eccles. Chicken and Egg Winners 23rd April. The Gladiators were in action on Friday morning against San Luis Hercules. The Gladiators won the match by a very handsome margin in fact the Gladiators won 5 of the 6 rinks and. overall shot count by 117 for to 71 against. Space precludes me from mentioning each winning team member by name but what a cracking result....and they know who they!! The Glosters were at home this week, playing in the afternoon against La Marina Pilots and did not fair so well. There was a only one winning team who were Sheila Hewett, Dave Thompson and Skip John O'Brien. The final result was only 2 points for Greenlands. the overall
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Wednesday found our Valencia Champions League team playing host to Greenlands Mimososa in their first match in the green league. El Rancho played well against good opposition, taking 3 rinks to Mimosas’ 2 and also taking the overall shots. Ladies Singles: Marianne Holtham 21-11. Mens Singles: Alec Morrice 9-21. Pairs: Jim Gracie and Stew Hamill 21-15. Trips: Sheila Cooper, Carolyn Harris and Irene Mangan 18-6. Rinks: Carol Smith, Shirley Edwards, Jane Hamill and David Whitworth 18-26. In The Hurricane League, on Friday, El Rancho travelled to Mazarron to play The Miners on a very windy morning. We were in great company and both teams found the wind causing some consternation, we both seemed to be playing the conditions rather than our opponents. But it was the same for all and Miners deserved their win. Marianne Holtham, Carol Smith and Merv Armstrong 17-22. Rob Clark, Margaret Wright and Malc Elmore 18-16. Tricia Elsam, John Skipper and John Featherstone 7-38. Geoff Wright, Ron Odell and Malc Sykes 11-24. Edward Elsam, Mick Ager and Stew Hamill 16-25.

HORADADA BOWLS CLUB
COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB
The big Club news relates to the Champion of Champions competition which was held all last week at Vistabella and Bonalba. Our ladies singles champion, Ann Allen ,did the Club proud by winning the competition. In the first two rounds she had relatively comfortable wins against Country Bowls and Javea Green. In the semi she came up against the home champion but after a very close [and nail biting] game she triumphed by two shots. In the final she met the San Miguel champion, Ann Eagle. The game initially swung both ways but Horadada Ann kept her nerve and gradually pulled away to win 21-13 Our mens pairs champions of John Hurlock and Barry Evans also had a good run. They won the first two rounds quite comfortably against Monte Mar and Emerald Isle. However in the semi-final against Country Bowls they went down by the close margin of 2 shots. This was a competition between the champions of 18 Clubs so every game is highly competative. Therefore congratulations must go to all three players for their performance in doing the Club proud. There are three Club games to report. Our first game in the SABA summer league was at home against Emerald Isle.We won by 105 shots to 102 with 9 points thanks to the rinks of Bryan Eatough,Alf Woodhouse and Terry Hucknall 21 – 17,Yvonne Hurlock,Roy Thompson and John Hurlock 25 – 16,Wayne Jackson,Jeff Hier and Peter Hinds 17 – 14, and a 12-12 draw by Fred Trigwell,Roy Collins and Barry Evans. The second game in this league was even closer as we won at La Siesta by 110 to 108 shots and picked up 10 points. Our winning rinks were Rose Guppy, Alf Woodhouse and Mike Douglas 26 – 14, Carol Linehan,Bill Stanaway and Jack Linehan 17 – 16,Garry Walker,Jim Kerr and Ann Allen 18 – 17 and Fred Trigwell,Dave Allen and Barry Evans 20 – 14. Our friendly rink of Linda Hier, Fred Semper and Len Chance also won. So a good start to the season in this league. In the new VCL league it was’nt such a good story.Again we were away at La Siesta but only came away with 2 of the 12 points available. Our points came in the rinks thanks to Fred Trigwell,Roy Collins,Roy Thompson and Barry Evans 16 – 11.Next week we have a home game against San Miguel.
By StJohn Broadhurst The week got off to a great start with the Club open day on Easter Sunday, at which non bowlers were given the opportunity to have a look at the club’s facilities and also take part in the fun bowling, organised by John Palmer. The weather was perfect for bowling and each bowler was paired up with a non-bowler and after 16 ends of target bowling the eventual winners were: best bowler – Andy White, best non-bowler – Susan Cameron and best team – Billy Price (bowler) and Ian White (non-bowler). Everyone agreed that it had been an entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable day. Wednesday saw the opening matches of the Valencian Championship League (VCL) which has replaced the King’s Cup, albeit with the same format. The Clarets played host to the Mavericks from San Miguel and in a closely fought match the Clarets emerged as victors, winning on three rinks and also winning the long game. The winning rinks were: Ladies singles: Karen Kirk 21-17 (playing her long-time friend and coach Carol Rudge). Pairs: Del Gunning, John Palmer 1910. Rinks: Carole Donnellan, Sandra McIlroy, Joel Fernandez, Dennis Birkett 19-16. Overall shots, Clarets 84 (8pts) Mavericks 82 (4pts). On Friday the Badgers travelled to Emerald Isle to play the Vulcans. Honours were even with both teams winning 3 rinks each, but the luck of the Irish was with Emerald Isle as they won the long game to take overall victory. The winning teams were: Del Gunning, Maurice Cass, Karen Kirk 16-15. Trevor Cox, Trish Dix, Peter Dix 17-13. Andy White, Billy Price, John Palmer 21-19. Overall shots, Badgers 84 (6pts) Vulcans 102 (8pts). There was also a win in the friendly game for Glynis Broadhurst, Mike Davies and StJohn Broadhurst 19-5. And finally congratulations to Del Gunning on reaching the final of the men’s pairs in the Champion of Champions. This was the first time Del had got through to the Champion of Champions, so to get to the final was a tremendous achievement. www.countrybowlsclub.com

IN THE BUNKER WITH ‘MICK THE GRIP’
CAN YOU SPOT the golf course in the above photo? No? That’s because there isn’t one. Construction of the 2016 Olympic golf venue in Rio de Janeiro, originally due to be completed this year, is being endlessly delayed by legal wrangles and cultural problems, and with no end in sight to the construction workers’ strike, which began on April 3rd and is affecting the whole Olympics site. With golf returning to the Olympics for the first time since 1904, there were plans to stage a test tournament in 2015. But IGF head, Peter Dawson was pessimistic. “The design of the course looks really good, but progress with the construction is not where we want it to be,” he reported, “The only green shoots on the course so far are weeds!” JIMMY WALKER (Pebble Beach) Russell Henley (Honda Classic) Patrick Reed (WGC Cadillac.) Not exactly household names but all three winning a Tour championship this spring, with young Jordan Spieth panting to win his first. Together with his heavy artillery of seasoned champions Tom Watson could be spoiled for choice for the Ryder Cup. Pity Europe can’t put some Australians in to bat (They would have been eligible in AD1700 after all) Aussie golfers have been doing rather well lately. How about Steven Bowditch or Matt Jones, who won the Valero Texas Open and the Houston Open respectively, and Jason Day the WGC Matchplay in February. Then there’s Brett Rumford, defending his title this weekend in the Volvo China Open,
and of course Adam Scott. We can’t? Never mind, at least Lee Westwood won the Malaysian Open convincingly. Things are looking up. LAST WEEK Miguel Angel Jimenez made his triumphant debut on the Champions Tour at TPC Sugarloaf; shooting 67 with 32 consecutive holes without a bogey. He finished two shots ahead of Bernhard Langer, becoming only the third player to lead from start to finish. Jimenez says he can’t commit to the Tour because his goal is making the Ryder Cup team. He’s going the right way to do it, you never get anywhere by ‘Resting.’ McIlroy please note. Langer, aged 56, shot 69 in the Masters with birdies on four of the last six holes, and tied for 8th place. Jimenez finished 4th. Fred Couples (54) almost looked as if he could win a second Masters 22 years after his first, coming within two strokes of the lead before fading. Larry Mize, Vijay Singh and Sandy Lyle also made the cut at 50 or older. They can’t keep the good ones down. THE BMW PGA Championship takes place at Wentworth from 22nd to 25th May. Europe’s flagship tournament usually attracts the strongest line?up of top players outside the Open Championship. In 2013 11 of the 12 members from Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup team competed. The lineup for this year has yet to be announced. MASTERS QUOTE: “OK, he’s lost his marbles. To even CONSIDER that shot in the position he’s in … I give up.” David Feherty of CBS, watching as Bubba Watson went for the green, between the trees and over the water on the par five 15th with a three shot lead. He cleared the green. Perhaps it was an unnecessary risk with a three shot lead, but Bubba’s unorthodox style is enough to make golf instructors blow their brains out. A USEFUL TIP I was given for chipping: ‘Watch the clubhead onto the bottom of the ball, see the grass fly, then listen for the ball landing. Vistabella Bowls Club Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice After a week’s rest from league games we got back into the swing and the best we can say is thank goodness for the Greeners. On Wednesday we started the new Valencian Championships League with a difficult trip to San Miguel to take on the Sheriffs and although there were a few tight games we lost by 96 shots to 90 and by 8 points to 4, our two wins came from Gail and Fred Willshire in the pairs and Tony French, Charlie Watkins, Les Barber and Dave Chaplin in the Rinks. On Friday the Fairways started their first season in the ‘A’ Division by entertaining Quesada Blenheims, last year’s winners of this league only to see what a difficult task lays ahead as they lost by 12 points to 2 and by 126 shots to 86. Our only success story came from Lin and Charlie Watkins and Jenny Bowman. The Greeners did however give us something to be happy about with a 10 points to 4 win away to San Luis Mosquitoes and by 122 shots to 93. Winning rinks were Sheila and Mike Cox with Allan Sinclair, Jenny Chaplin, Brian Pointon and Dave Chaplin, Rosemarie Savage, Geoff Paylor and Jeff Neve and Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Pat Rafferty. We had a very successful presentation night on Friday evening and thanks go to our Competition Secretary Peter Wright and our outgoing Social Secretary Pat Williamson for all their hard work throughout the year.

The short trip down the AP-7 to the Mar Menor Golf Resort was in order for 26 members and 6 guests of Alfies Golf Society this April. Not a cloud in the sky, warmer than average temperatures for the time of year and a light to medium breeze (which did liven up for the back nine !) meant almost perfect conditions for golf. Mar Menor always has been a regular on our calendar in the 2? years I have been a member with Alfie’s, and it is plain to see why. Not the longest course in our region but nevertheless a stern test for golfers of all abilities with well placed (and in some cases very deep!) bunkers dotted on fairways and surrounding greens to trap any errors on a drive or an approach shot. 18 undulating greens in excellent condition with the feature on the course, Mar Menor’s version of the famous Augusta 'Amen Corner' on holes 13, 14 and 15. Average scoring for the Society as a whole was probably down slightly this month probably due to the wind getting up on the back nine, but nevertheless several players recorded 30+ stableford points. Sam Cobley, back after a two month absence with a shoulder injury, took

Hollow Tining of Greens – Why is it necessary? We just entering that period of the year when the courses hollow tine the greens causing a disruption to golf and producing a poor putting surface for a few weeks but just why do they have to do this to us? The surface of a green, colour, density and speed is a combination of the maintenance of the surface but also, about the maintenance of the root-zone. A healthy grass starts from healthy roots. Soil compaction can be a severe problem resulting in restricted root growth, lack of water infiltration into the soil, loss of resilience, weed invasion, disease problems and decline in turf quality. Hollow Tining is used to prevent damage from an excessive soil compaction. It is also very important to provide the needed drainage, for water infiltration and aeration at the root-zone and is done during the warm season when temperatures favour rapid shoot growth and coverage of the turf openings. The use of sand on greens is essential because it helps to digest the organic matter, enhancing the aeration of the root-zone, speed on greens and better recovery from pitch marks. In order to minimize the disruption to golfers, hollow tinning is usually carried out in 2 consecutive journeys so that the 18 greens are aerated in the same week. The surface smoothness restoration process includes top dressing, drag matting and rolling and greens are normally puttable after 3 days with rolling putting surface within 10 days. There you have it…so when you next question the parentage of the green keepers you will understand why the work is necessary! We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. EUROGOLF SOCIETY - LA MARQUESA Captain Vs Vice Captain’s Challenge. The Captain and Vice Captain pick their teams who then go out and do battle in a 4ball Stableford. This week there were approx 68 players and we had a shotgun start at 8.10. The heat was relentless and it was a hard day at the office. However, at the end of the day a clear winner emerged, with Captain’s choices winning 11-6. Strangely, the winner gets a baseball cap, and the runner up a nice trophy. The game was followed by a Free Lunch for players in THE CLUBHOUSE RESTAURANT . Very nice it was too. RESULTS: 1st John Fairhurst & Alan Venables 75 points. (Captain), 2nd Norman Woods & Vince Tocker 71 points. (Captain), 3rd David Blanchette & Mike Gillett 70 points (Vice Captain). Best Man: J. Barraclough, Best Lady: Gina Ashworth, both with 36 points. Nearest The Pins: 5th J. Fairhurst. 11th T. Stanley. 15th R. Richings 17th D. Blanchette. Football Draw. K. Brett, V. Tocker, F.
Berndt, R. Richards. Due to a tradition of nobody winning 2 major prizes, the highest Scorer of the day didn’t win the highest scoring man prize, as he was in the 2nd place team. Well done to Norman Woods who scored a magnificent 42 points.

Lo Marabu Golf Society In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services At El Plantio on 24th April 2014. For this month’s meeting a group of 28 players visited the established course at El Plantio taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. This is the first time for a number of years that our society have played this course and was generally well received by our members although the caddy master did insert a 4 ball in the middle of our group ‘at the turn’ who were slow and which made play on the back nine holes slower than we would have expected. The course has clearly undergone significant work particularly on the greens which were much better than when we last played and in general the course was in good condition. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Winston Blackwood - 33 points. 2nd – Harry Farnell - 32 points. 3rd – Mike Probert – 31 points. Best Front/ Back 9 holes – Andy Jones and Dave Marriott. Nearest the Pin on 9th – Wayne Matthews. Dog of a Day Trophy – Rick Matthews After the game we returned to the Lo Marabu, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their continued support. Our next fixture is the social day at Mar Menor on 12th May 2014 followed by the monthly meeting at La Peraleja on 29th May 2014. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at www.costa-blancagreenfees.com.
CLARKES BAR G.S. This week we traveled to the wide open spaces of Corvera Golf and Country Club on a warm and sunny morning. We arrived to find the fairways in their usual dry and dusty state and the greens still recovering from their recent hollow tining. A light breeze developed into at least a 1 club wind as the day wore on but this did not detract from, on the whole, good scoring. A special mention goes to Pat Creegan who despite dislocating her thumb on the 4th hole managed to complete the round after having the thumb reset and came a very creditable third with 38 points. The rest of the results were: Nearest the pin on hole 8 was Alan Kirrage Nearest the pin on hole 15 was Colin Capper Nearest the par 4 10th in 2 was Martin Gilligan Longest Drive on hole 14 was John Porter Winner with 39 points on count back was Bernard Ball just holding off the runner up, on better back nine, Frank McCann. Next week we return to Peraleja meet at the Bar at 08:00.

ELCHE DRAW POINTS TOWARD SAFETY BY JOHN MCGREGOR
ELCHE CF .............1 LEVANTE UD ......1
A
win would have virtually secured staying in La Liga for Elche next season. But this year’s biggest problem is the Franjiverdes scoring goals, having the dubious distinction of being the league’s lowest scorers: a pathetic 28 in 35 games. Even bottom club Betis have scored 29. Fortunately the defence has acquitted itself reasonably well, only conceding a competitive 47, lower than most around them to keep the Illicitanos just above the relegation zone. Mid-table Levante, with nothing really to play for represented Elche’s best chance of vital home points in the tough final run in. In the City of Palms on a sunny Friday evening a wildly-enthusiastic 28,405 fans, almost all locals turned out to urge their green and white men on. Everyone was given special flags and programs on entry and one supporters group had made a huge home-made banner adorning half the Prefencia stand denoting the club’s unity. So - all Elche had to do was win, and everyone could go home happy - but this is football… Still no Lomban and Albacar in defence meant Peligrin and this time Cisma standing in after Sapuranu’s red card last week. No Ruben Perez in midfield, left out in favour of Carlos Sanchez and Javi Marquez. For a change striker Boakye started, hero of the late winner two weeks ago in injury time against rivals Getafe, supported upfront by the lively newcomer Rodriguez. For Levante two old Elche favourites started, ‘Zoomi’ Xumetra and popular goalscorer Angel. Elche started well with Peligrin heading over unmarked from a Suarez free kick. It wasn’t all one-way, Herrera pushed a long shot past his post as the visitors had their moments, but half-time came goalless with Elche firmly in control. Only four minutes into the second half and somehow Javi Marquez
missed an open goal. Boakye then appeared to be tripped in the box, but the ref said no, as both sides sustained bookings. On the hour at last… the desired, long-awaited and very welcome home goal came. From the wide left Rodriguez found Boakye in the area with his back to goal, but well marked. The Ghananian striker who has notched several important goals this season, swivelled, dummied and cracked in his shot to wild celebrations and warm applause all round the ectstatic Martinez Valero. The happy carnival atmosphere went on for a full 12 minutes with the fully-expectant prospect that the Franjiverdes would go on and score more… Following a needlessly-conceded corner, to almost total shocked silence a chapter of accidents in the Elche defence saw Angel cruelly scoring against his old club at the second attempt, everyone in green and white standing still. Rodriguez then had three chances, all gloriously wasted with shots nearer to the corner flag then the goal: he was then substituted for Fidel, then Boakye by Christian Herrera, and finally Rivera for Javi Marquez. Despite the anxious crowd urging their heroes on the score finally stayed at 1 – 1, Elche really throwing two points away with careless defending. Below Elche both Getafe and Almeria pulled off great wins, although bitter rivals Granada above them lost. If Betis are down, which two teams go with them? Elche are 15th with 36 points. From Granada in 14th with 37 points down to Valladolid (two games in hand) in 19th with 32 points only five points separate the six teams. With three games left Elche are away to mid-table Malaga next week, then home to mighty-but-troubled Barcelona with the final match away to highflying Sevilla. Oooh… Mucho Elche! No way through for livewire Rodriguez Photo: KEVIN RENDALL

21st April and the final week of our league season finishing with 2 teams on 38 points with only the differentials separating them. Congratulations to Dorothy’s Izzys Magpies in 1st place and then both the Meson Galea teams in 2nd & 3rd spots with Ayliff’s “A” team claiming runners up place & Brian’s “B” team in prestigious 3rd. For Dorothy’s Magpies at home to Catorce it was that skilful (or is it more luck than knowhow) pair of Martin & John who won their 3 games, while Fran & Tony zeroed out for Catorce. Slipping to runners up spot and out of luck are Ayliff’s Galea “A” who were in the top spot last week but couldn’t quite hang in against Derek’s Robins who had Gladys & Jacky on form with 3 wins. Moving stealthily into the prizes in 3rd place are Brian’s Galea “B” after a run of 9 consecutive wins and a close win over Jim’s Siesta Sharks. Best pair for Galea “B” were Brian & Dave with 3 wins. Just losing out in 4th spot are Brian’s Jaguars after losing from 4-2 up against Shirley’s Jays who are the strongest team in the league even with both teams having 2 pairs on 2 wins each. Richard’s Ospreys moved up 2 places to 5th overtaking Val’s Voles with their win over the Sportsman thanks to Bob & Pat who had 3 wins while Sportsman’s best were Brian & Graham N. with 2 wins. Val’s Voles visited Keith’s Merlins and felt the bowler’s wrath with Tony & Barbara on 3 wins while Val & Norman had a nil finish for the Voles. At the time of writing this report I don’t have the scoresheet from John’s Lo Crispin so can’t comment on their 5-4 win over Mary’s Peacocks. Finally at the Steakhouse my Falcon’s team slumped 1 place in losing out to Dave’s team who had part timers Brian & Jan cruising with 3 wins while Gill and myself dropped like a stone without a win.
