OVER 300,000 PILGRIMS SET OUT FROM ALICANTE
Tel: 96 673 0057
Over 300,000 believers set out from the San Nicolas Cathedral in Alicante at about 8am last Thursday morning, May day, to walk the 7.5kms to the Santa Faz monastery (which translates as ‘The monastery of the holy face’) on the Santa Faz pilgrimage, with many of the pilgrims having queued all night to be at the front of the march. This year there was a far greater reason than usual to attend as the event was celebrating it’s 525th anniversary and together with the sunny weather and the National Holiday officials said that the numbers were increased by as much as 50%. One of the most famous pilgrimages in the country the Santa Faz pilgrimage tends to be much more popular than it’s Santiago de Compostelo counterpart where travelers have to walk 100km in order
to receive the coveted certificate of accomplishment, so at just 7.5 kms, the Alicante event is much easier on the legs. It is also a very communal affair as everyone sets off together with plenty of food and wine which is enjoyed by participants along the way. The route always includes the traditional stop -the paraetafor a breakfast of anise rolls with mistela wine. This year over 1,800 kilos of donuts and 1,500 liters of mistela was paid for by the city of Alicante The president of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra, whao also attended the walk, said after participating, that the act is a sign of "unity and strength and there is nothing that can stop the will of an entire people" . Other local officials attending the event included the acting mayor Andrés Llorens, as the mayor, Sonia Castedo, is currently on maternity leave, the PP vice presidente in Alicante, José Císcar and councilors Isabel Bonig, Maximum Buch and Asunción Sánchez Zaplana. Continued from Page 1 The socialist delegation was led by its general secretary, Xim Puig, who said that the day serves to "emphasise that the value in a city is in its people not the extent or the value of its buildings” and that “despite the difficult economic situation the people of the city are still able to pull together.” On reaching the Santa Faz monastery pilgrims were met by Cardinal Monteiro de Castro, apostolic exnuncio of the Holy See in Spain, who presided at a Mass with the Bishop of Alicante, Jesus Murgui, and Bishop Emeritus, Rafael Palmero. The significance of the Monastery is that it contains a relic, according to tradition a veil with which Veronica wiped the bleeding face of Jesus. The relic has been devoutly venerated by the people of Alicante Province from the time that the first pilgrimage was made to the Monastery in
1489. After the religious celebrations in which the pilgrims beg for mercy from the relic, the tradition is for visitors to spend time wandering around the many different stands selling all kinds of objects (the most typical purchase is an earthenware bell) and then to have a picnic. There were a number of injuries however, mostly of a minor nature, blisters and ankle sprains, about 40 people requiring the attention of first aid attendants and one person who rather bizarrely was found to be suffering from alcohol poisoning. Must have been the wine! Along the way, there were just two protests, the foremost being a group of RTVV workers who had hung a banner from one of the overpasses on Avda Denia and were shouting " Fabra resign" as the President walked below.

In a considerably shorter monthly meeting than normal, lasting just three hours, the Orihuela council has shown that they are capable of working together for the good of society, by unanimously approving a motion to protect and support those affected by the financial crisis, in particular in support of the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca. All councillors approved the vote, including the ruling government, the opposition and councillors unassigned, in a motion tabled by the Partido Popular. Many consider it an unusual move that the PP should have brought such a notion as it is considered that it is their national political group that have caused the problems for many of those facing eviction. The second surprise was that a similar motion had already been tabled some months ago by the councillor for social welfare, Emilio Zaplana, with was rejected by the majority vote of the Partido Popular. Some members of the PAH group voiced their objections to the fact it was the PP who had tabled the plan, considering the fact that they had refused to help in the past, with the overall opin-
ion being that the PP are now using the situation as a “weapon” in the battle with the bipartite government. Never the less, irrespective of the political ball throwing, this is a positive move for the people of Orihuela, which will ensure the right to housing, rather than eviction, and see the creation of a municipal fund for social housing for those affected by evictions, as well as online social support to offset the payment of basic supplies such as water, electricity or gas. Orihuela has numerous blocks of properties which were built by the Partido Popular government of Valencia, which still remain vacant to this day, despite the number of people who have faced eviction as a result of the financial crisis.

JUSTICE SWINGS BOTH W AYS FOR FORMER MAYORS xx
he Ministry of Justice has issued a report contrary to a pardon requested by the former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, who was found guilty and convicted in November, 2012, for trespass and forgery following the award of a 100 million euro contract negotiated in 2004 to handle municipal waste collection. He was disqualified from office for 7 years and sentenced to prison for 3. This is the latest blow for Hernández Mateo, who has tried every possible option to remain free, despite every level of the judicial and appeals process finding him guilty, judges and the Supreme Court all supporting his incarceration, plus a protest by member of the public who want to see a convicted criminal serve the sentence handed down. However, the final decision still lies in the hands of the central government of Mariano Rajoy, run by his own political party, the Partido Popular, but there is still some hope for justice to be served as in a recent answer to a parliamentary question, the government said that it has rejected a total of 49 clemency petitions during 2013 for crimes of corruption by individuals against the Public Administration reiterating
T
the need for sentences to be carried out if justice is to be achieved. Meanwhile, the Provincial Court has admitted an appeal by former Orihuela Mayor, Mónica Lorente, thus cancelling the trial set for the 29th of May, in which Lorente was to be charged in connection with the case of the Plaza del Escorratel. In a case brought to the courts following complaints by both the Los Verdes and PSOE, it was alleged that Lorente had awarded the contract for work on the square to a company before it had been put to public tender. In a statement, Lorente said that “this is a good day, because this is very good news for me and the Party, from both a personal and a political point of view”, and she remains confident “that time will prove her right”. Lorente continued, “You must understand the significance of these issues when you are a public office”, stating that “I have been featured in media for the opening of a trial against alleged negligence, but today I want everyone to know this positive news, both personally and politically, as we take another major step to clear any doubt “.

IT CAN BE TOUGH BEING A HERO When a Valencia motorist stopped to help the victims of a road traffic accident, he never expected that his day could get any worse, as the rug was pulled from under him in a case that would seem unreal, resulting in his demotion from hero to zero
in one foul swoop. As Torrevieja town hall launched a recent investigation as to why some of their local police officers were enforcing the law with some vigour, none of them could yet come close to the officer who arrived at the scene of the accident in Avila, which took place in
June of last year, but is still the subject of a long, and so far failed appeal. Having stabilised the injured parties from the crash, the next stage was to wait for an ambulance to arrive. With little more to do during the wait, the police officer set about issuing a parking ticket to a badly parked vehicle in the vicinity of the crash. However, that vehicle belonged to our hero in this story, who had witnessed the crash and immediately stopped to offer assistance. Of course a simple explanation of the reason for parking in the location might be all that was needed, but not for our police officer in question, who simply continued to write and issue the ticket to our law breaking hero. The driver was somewhat surprised, still trying to explain the circumstances behind his vehicle location, but still falling on the deaf ears of the law enforcing officer. Finally, out of frustration, the driver took the ticket, but didn´t
accept it, ripping it in to tiny pieces in front of the officer and throwing it to the floor. The officer duly responded, by issuing a further ticket, a 150 euro fine for a municipal ordinance that prohibits the “emptying, pouring and depositing all kinds of waste materials both on the road and sidewalks”, in other words, a fine for littering. In the appeals process, the claim has been declined by the auditors at the town hall, as, “irrespective of the circumstances”, because the “applicant acknowledges throwing the papers on the street in the appeal letter, committing the offense at the time”. There was also a question about language, not of the foul mouthed type one might expect, but because the warnings were said to have been given in the Valencian language, rather than Castilian, despite the claimant being Spanish, a matter which is also dismissed as acceptable, unless specifically requested at the time.

on the decision of the EC on the shareholder loan, and recognizes that “the most realistic” date for opening is “between September and December 2014”, which he considers is “very possible”. In view of the plans to finance the operation, the decision for the remaining 182 million euro to complete the airport lies with Brussels, and the European Commission, as the matter “may affect European legislation on competition”. Theoretically, according to Campos, “the airport is built and tomorrow we could start to work”, upon completion of the relevant authorisations, although there are still elements that need completing as well as the final inspections which have been postponed until after the European elections.

ALICANTE MAINTAINS BLOCK ON BENIDORM AND TORREVIEJA SHUTTLE In Alicante´s plenary meeting this week, the Partido Popular majority has once again blocked the proposal for a shuttle bus between the railway station in the city and the coastal towns of Torrevieja and Benidorm. In the meeting on Wednesday chaired by Andrés Llorens, the councillor for transport, Juan Seva, reiterated the opposition to the bus link. A survey of train passengers revealed that 79% of travellers are city and metropolitan based, whereas 21% goes to the rest of the province. Of those who travel outside the city confines, around 55% in the summer and 37% in the winter go south of the province. In terms of the most popular locations, 18% of the lesser group go to Benidorm and 12% go to Torrevieja. Three different taxi association representatives were also present in the meeting, and expressed their concern that the buses might cause gridlock in the city. An alternative proposal which may be discussed would be a connecting shuttle bus which runs from the train station to the bus station in Alicante, thus providing the necessary link to the network already operating. Meanwhile, RENFE are still advertising the operation of a connecting bus link from other towns such as Santa Pola.
MINISTER BELIEVES CORVERA WILL OPEN THIS YEAR
Following on from last week´s news that Castellón airport is set to open before Christmas, the Murcia Minister of Development, Public Works and Planning, Manuel Campos, has stated that the new Murcia Regional Airport at Corvera would also be open between the months of September to December, once the relevant financial credits have been confirmed. In an interview this week, Campos stated that the date of September the 14th had been “shuffled” around, because that was the date proposed by the concessionaire in one of the letters addressed to the then president Ramón Luis Valcárcel. However, Campos also stated that this will depend crucially

JUDGE REINSTATES EXPELLED ORIHUELA COUNCILLORS In this week´s plenary meeting at Orihuela town hall, the Mayor of the municipality, Monseratte Guillén, once again refused to allow two councillors to table motions on behalf of the CLR-CLARO group, on account of them having been expelled from that coalition. However, coincidental to the timing of the plenary meeting, the judge provisionally suspended the expulsion of Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio López-Bas, this theoretically returning them to their previous positions within the political group they have maintained representation of. The significance of returning them to the group is that it would pave the way once more for the tabling of a censure motion, which could, in turn, overthrow the mayor and return the Partido Popular to power for the remainder of this administrative term. In the notes from the court, the judge appears to support the argument that the two councillors have maintained, the claim that the requirements of their expulsion were not met. As the last attempted censure motion was prevented on account of them having been expelled, the suspension may now open the door for the motion to be tabled once again.

LORENTE ALLEGES SUMMER SCHOOL IRREGULARITIES Former mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, has accused the education department of the town hall of promoting the company who would run last year´s summer school, before awarding the contract for work to them. Lorente has been facing criticism herself for a case that could result in a criminal conviction for allegedly awarding work to a company before it was put to public tender, so it is not surprising that any evidence of wrong doing would be highlighted.
Lorente also claims that the company involved is run by the daughter of one of the town hall operatives, and not only was the announcement made prior to the contract being signed, the town hall had already started to recruit children into the scheme. If true, the allegations would prove extremely serious for the councillor for education, Rosa Martínez, but in answering to the allegations in defence of the actions, Martínez simply responded that Lorente does not “know the facts”.

ORIHUELA TO TACKLE NOISE POLLUTION The government team of Orihuela has set a new ordinance in the municipality, which aims to “improve the quality of life for residents”, according to the councillor who presented the plan this week, Antonio Zapata. However, the ordinance will still require processing and approval from the information commission before it can be adopted in full, it has been met with positive action in the areas it has been tested, although not without criticism, as some people complained over signs appearing in children´s playing parks prohibiting ball games in the last week, which were done as a direct result of complaints from residents over noise. The University Miguel Hernández has been instrumental in the campaign, and the town hall has advanced the creation of an acoustic map of the city, which will then take into account elements such as land classification and the technical building specifications, combining the requirements of both legislation and classification to set the minimum values for each area. The new ordinance will determine the technical characteristics of sound limiters and monitors, as well as clearly stating a system of penalties, depending on the severity of violations, although there will also be a warning period for remedial action before sanctions are imposed.

NEW ALICANTE POLICE TEAM TO ENSURE SAFETY OF TOURISTS
t would seem that at long last the authorities in Alicante have finally realised that they need to pay rather more attention to the requirements of tourists while they are visiting the city. Nothing provides a worse image than a tourist who has been the victim of a crime or one who has suffered maltreatment, whatever the reason, as he returns and spreads word of the nature of his dissatisfaction back home or on travel review websites that have become so popular in recent years. As such, agents of the policia locale have this week been transferred in to a new team of Tourist Police who began their duties last Monday. The Department of Public Safety have created the force because they want to provide tourists with the
I
best image of the city so during the tourism season there will now be ten officers per shift working the streets of Alicante and dealing specifically with assistance to visiting holidaymakers. The officers will be responsible for overseeing their safety and for enforcing the city ordinances in the areas of the greatest influx of tourism in the city Councillor Juan Seva said that the officers “will provide a safer environment for tourists during their stay in Alicante, through actions of prevention, protection and guidance. They will also be responsible for collaboration with government and businesses linked to tourism in the city.” As well as ensuring the care and conservation of historic sites, monuments and the environment, officers will also pay special attention to any activities that may adversely affect tourism, such as dumping rubbish out of hours, begging, prostitution, alcohol or drug abuse on public streets.

SOME TORREVIEJA COPS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR DRIVING ABILITY
Torrevieja´s abundance of police cars may be spending even more time parked outside the station in the future, after it was revealed that around a dozen of the city´s officers have been reported to the traffic department as being of questionable ability to drive for medical grounds. The traffic department has responded to some of the claims by putting a two month test period in place for some of the officers, to ascertain if they are fit to drive or not. Failure to attend the tests would immediately result in the loss of the driving permit. However, some believe that the reasons for the report are not out of concern for the officers themselves, but another attempt to discredit the management of the police by the town hall, as part of the ongoing dispute between the police and the ruling Partido Popular government team.
Working hours and conditions have been put under additional strain recently, following such instances as overtime not being paid to all officers, some apparently being paid in favour of others, the changes in staff working hours and covering of holidays, including for those who waivered overtime payment in exchange for days off. In total, the active police force of Torrevieja has seen a drop of up to 20% in capacity as a result, with many shifts being left uncovered or cut short. More than half of the 170 officers on the force have signed a letter asking for the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, to act in resolving the work disputes that have been going on for over two years now, and have been the subject of protests in the town hall and the streets of the city, including a topless display this month, for which some of the officers may face disciplinary proceedings.

ARE FOREIGN SECOND HOMEOWNERS THE KEY TO SPAIN’S RECOVERY?
High unemployment and a sluggish economy are stifling Spain’s appeal to Brits looking somewhere sunny to live and work, but its bargain property prices are attracting holiday homeowners and investors, that is according to a string of statistics published in April. Richard Way, Editor at The Overseas Guides Company, publishers of the Spain Buying Guide said: “The Bank of Spain reported that investment by foreigners in Spain’s housing market in 2013 was the highest for nine years, at €6.45 billion (US$8.95 billion), up 16 per cent on the previous year. At the same time, a leading overseas mortgage broker confirmed in April a sizeable shift in interest for Spain in the last six months, with the country accounting for more than half of enquiries being received – the first time that a single country has accounted for such a large percentage of the broker’s enquiries. “Similarly, at The Overseas Guides Company, we have witnessed more interest for property in Spain than in France during the first quarter of 2014 - historically it has been the reverse. And yesterday (April 28th), Spain’s Association of Land Registrars released a statement saying that foreigners’ share of all Spanish property transactions rose to 11.15 per cent in 2013, compared to just 4.45 per cent in 2009. The Balearic Islands, home to Mallorca, attract the largest portion of foreign buyers (30.7 per cent), followed by the Valencian Community (24.8 per cent), home to the Costa Blanca and the Canary Islands (24.6 per cent). “Recent statistics showing a fall in the number of British people reg-
istered at town halls in 2013 would suggest more people are returning to the UK than relocating to Spain. However, they don’t reflect people purchasing second homes there or Brits that split their time between the two countries, while remaining a resident of the UK.” Richard Way, Editor, The Overseas Guides Company

GREEN APP IMPROVES RESPONSE TO HUNDREDS OF FAULT REPORTS Having become instrumental in the launch of a new way of communicating problems and complaints to the town hall of Orihuela, the Línea Verde mobile reporting application has already resulted in 306 submissions of issues to the environmental department since its September launch. The new mobile phone app which will allow anybody with a smartphone to report issues such as garden waste or broken streets lights, by generating an automated report, complete with pictures and location, which will allow a faster response to problem areas. In Orihuela, the highest number of recorded faults has been referred to the categories of street furniture, signs and traffic lights, and waste disposal. In Orihuela, one of the biggest problems facing the clean up teams is lack of location informatio. All too often, the town hall are sent photographs of issues, but with no location, or other information to assist the town hall teams in finding the problem. Users of Apple and Android devices can search for Linea Verde in their App Store, but the reporting process is also available through a website for those who don´t have smartphones, which can be visited at www.lineaverdeorihuela.com.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney
SPAIN GUARANTEES 10 MBPS WITHIN THREE YEARS
Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
The problem is that although clothes dry very rapidly in the heat of the Spanish and Canarian sun, they dry a little too quickly for comfort and end up feeling like sandpaper. We can add as much fabric conditioner as we wish, but it makes little difference. Just imagine the horrors of enjoying your time swimming, sunbathing and relaxing in the heat of the sun on one of our fabulous beaches, only to take a delicious shower at the end of it all and dry yourself off with a towel that feels at best like a sheet of limp cardboard or, at worst, a nasty Brillo pad! Not nice is it?
The new General Telecoms Act has finally been approved by the Spanish Governement.
Laundry Tips for Hot Expats
Now, thanks to many of the delightful expats who write to me, I think we have the answer. It does not come cheap, but it is the answer nevertheless, and it comes in the form of a tumble drier. I can already hear some readers snorting in disgust at the very thought of living in a hot climate and using a tumble drier to dry the washing, but I can assure them that after thorough testing, the idea does work. First of all, washing enthusiasts can still dry their clothes and towels in the heat of the sun, in the usual way. This is economically and environmentally essential; after all we don't want to increase expats’ carbon footprint more than we have already. However, for the final ten to fifteen minutes of drying, just pop the towels into the tumble drier to finish off. They will come out of the machine warm, dry and, most importantly, soft and fluffy; just like the towels that mother gave you at home.
Sorry about the title, but after several weeks writing about Wills, Death and Cockroaches for expats, I thought it was time to move on to something a little more cheerful, and that this would catch your attention. Let us consider a subject that I know is very dear to the hearts of many expats, and that is the subject of washing clothes. Long gone are the days when most expats would pop along to their local stream and give their clothes a good scrub in its cooling running water. Believe it or not, the question of washing is one of the subjects that I receive many questions about. True, it is a little behind the usual questions about ‘the land grab’, legal and motoring problems, but washing is a popular subject nevertheless. It seems that sometimes we are never happy. We spend much of our lives in the misery of living in the wind and rain in our home country, move to Spain and still complain about the weather, but this time about what it does to the laundry.
Incidentally, whilst on the subject of fabric conditioners, it is best not to use them at all. I had not realised, until a correspondent wrote to me recently, that most fabric conditioners are made from the products of the slaughterhouse, with animal fats being one of the main ingredients. In addition, although fabric conditioners may make your clothes feel soft and fresh, the chemicals used are also toxic. Health problems can range from headaches, light headedness and fatigue to serious damage to organs and the central nervous system, as well as cancer. I had always
thought that the ‘fresh clean’ smell of ‘Spring Blossom’ fabric conditioner was for my sensory benefit. Apparently not, as it is there mainly to disguise the foul smelling chemicals used. I am told that, as an alternative, a quarter cup of white vinegar or baking soda can be used in the final wash instead. To end on a more cheerful note, that ‘heady feel’ after a good night out may have nothing at all to do with too much alcohol, but might be the result of contact with just too much fabric conditioner. If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). The long-awaited update to the 2003 Act was approved by all main parties, the PP, PSOE, CiU and PNV, who all voted in favour of the proposed amendments, 179 in total. The new law will simplify the procedures for operators to invest in fibre optic and 4G networks by scrapping licenses and tax charges, introducing market unity and ensuring future access to networks in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner The amendment also contain measures that will reduce the digital divide and increase broadband access with a commitment to guarantee a minimum broadband connection speed of 10Mbps across the whole of Spain by 2017. In addition, the government has said it will extend 30 Mbps coverage to public institutions by 2016.

PROGRESS AT LAST ON THE NEW INSTITUTO After several years of abandonment there are a few builders back on the site of the proposed secondary school at Playa Flamenca. It is at least encouraging to see some action again on this long neglected project. Sub-standard education facilities have long been a source of contention for the school children of Orihuela Costa. To date there is only one custom built school in the area, and this only meets the needs of half of the primary aged students living along the coastal stretch. The other half of primary school children and all secondary aged children have been forced to endure sub-standard, ill equipped and cramped facilities for countless numbers of years. It is a sad fact that over half the children living on Orihuela Costa spend their entire educational experience in buildings that are unfit for their purpose and lack the facilities expected in a modern primary or secondary school! Primary school children attending the school in Los Dolces do have the luxury of having some playground facilities, and the children do have some opportunities for outdoor play. This is in stark contrast to the secondary school students who are warehoused in cramped, overcrowded porta-cabins that resemble a prison of war camp rather than a school in as affluent region of Spain without adequate outdoor areas or proper facilities for physical education. The secondary school student living along Orihuela Costa have been systematically discriminated against and treated as third rate learners compared to his neighbours living in other areas of the Orihuela municipality. One can only question how students have coped with such third rate facilities and speculate on the effects the poor premises have had on their learning experiences and even on the attainment levels. The poor school facilities will clearly have a negative impact on even the most
motivated and committed teachers, who I am sure regularly see a teaching position at this Instituto as a stepping stone in their career. It can be argued that like most of the students, the teaching staff look with envy at all the other schools within the Orihuela municipality and can´t wait to leave the school on Orihuela Costa. At the start of the school year in September 2013 the students at the Orihuela Costa Instituto were promised that they would be moving into their new school in September 2014 and that they only had to endure their present premises for another year at the most. At the same time they were given this positive news they were advised not to attend their present school when it rained! However, in spite of this promise it seems highly unlikely that the new secondary school will be anywhere near completion by September 2014. Although there are some workmen on the sight their present numbers are insufficient to see the completion of this major project. The school is in fact a mere skeleton, the framework is constructed but there is so much work required that it would need a small army of workers working flat out to complete this project by September 2014. Comparing the building activity at the Playa Flamenca site to the army of workers engaged at completing the school that was re-opened after renovation in Torrevieja last year it is questionable when completion will actually be accomplished. What the residents of Orihuela Costa must realise is that this appalling discrimination of school children from the area is largely down to them. HAH MAR MENOR INVITE YOU TO A TALK BY A LEADING CHIROPRACTOR On Wednesday May 21st at Bacchus Restaurant, Urb Oasis, Los Narejos, 11.30 am. Dr Xavier Dutey-Harispe D.C graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, USA, the “fountainhead of Chiropractic in the world” As a highly qualified Chiropractor, Acupuncturist and Naturopathe, he has had clinics in Pau, France, London, England and Pamplona, Northern Spain. He has travelled the world treating and educating people about the benefits of Chiropractic. He has a passion for helping people, hence his Algorfa Family Chiropractic Clinic, and now has a second clinic in collaboration with S.O.S. Beauty clinic in Plaza Mercadona, Los Alcazares A traditional chiropractor, he concentrates on helping restore the integrity of the nervous system, helping to create balance and harmony throughout the body and helping to prevent disease and musculoskeletal problems.
“Correct diagnosis is what is important. There is a vast difference between treating effects and adjusting the cause.” As we get older, our muscles deteriorate and mobility can become more difficult. With less movement we are more prone to injury. A chiropractor can manipulate the joints and muscles to help with that mobility to allow you to be more active in your later years and he can also help with painful arthritis. Some of our patients benefit from Acupuncture, our oldest patient a lovely lady of 84 years of age had extreme difficulty walking when she first attended the clinic. She comments now about how more mobile she is and how it has made a big difference to the quality of her everyday life. Please view our website for more information at: www.chiropractorspain.com/Benefits.aspx Chiropractic & Acupuncture – “The Secret is in the Spine”

180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams x3, Paul Durrant x4, Lee Maiden x3, Alex Nikolov (Meerkats), Sid Cross x4 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer, Irene Russell, Paul Dowinton (Busters), Mike Smith, Mel Dawson (Breakaways Bears), John Linton (Gogarty´s), George Caine (Madigans) Highest finish: John Eyre (Meerkats) 170 Shortest leg: 14 darts Lee Maiden, Meerkats The league concluded this week and with just the semis and finals to play over the following week or so, its all over for another year. The Meerkats finished the season with a victory over 4th placed Busters in a game that didn’t quite live up to expectations, but it meant the Kats remain unbeaten over 26 matches, dropping just two points, one against Busters earlier in the season, the other in a tremendous tussle with Hattons that was so nearly a victory for the Hunks. At the other end of the table, the Royal Family as they have become known, in reality the Pint Depot Queens, started their programme on September 19th with no points and 8 months later still remain on zero. Debbie Wright questioned whether they would have done better in the Eurovision Song Contest. Judging by their rendition of Agadoo, every time they amass two legs, the answer is a resounding NO. However, everyone who played the Queens came away with a smile on their face after an exceptionally enjoyable evening. The other royalty, the Kings, deservedly won the league plate with a 5 point cushion over the Tavern. A good all round performance from the boys and on occasion exceptional arrows, if repeated more often would have comfortably elevated them into the top half. With the singles, pairs and KO cup to be decided over the next two Thursdays, there just remains the Exite Radio Merit Awards for team and individual results which have now been determined. With so many fine team and individual performanc-
es this term it was inevitable the final tables would be very close in each of the three categories and so it was. Unfortunately you will have to wait until Presentation night on the 15th May to find out the recipients. A winner and runner up has been determined for team ladies and gents divisions and all are deserved for numerous great performances. Finally you don’t often witness a maximum game shot even from the pros on Sky or BBC, however its different in the Euronics league. Down at Busters this week a close second singles between Paul Dowinton and John Eyre exploded into life when the Meerkat required 170. There is only one way to go for the maximum finish and after the first two treble 20s were hit all eyes were focused on the centre of the board. Bang, right in the middle for a magnificent 170 game shot, a tremendous cheer and a congratulatory handshake from opponent Dowinton. It all happens in the Euronics League! Porterhouse finished the season in 6th place narrowly missing out on 5th, virtue of a home loss to Gogarty´s and the Hunks final victory over Breakaways. Ray Sanderson should be pleased with himself gaining 14 wins, 5 draws and just the 7 losses. Gogarty´s got off to a real flyer winning the team and both triples before the hosts mustered a leg. John Linton´s ton helped Kevin Procktor to finish the 1001 on D16 and then popped in D3 himself for 0-2. It was a very good 701 triples Peter Ayres contributing 100 and 133, with Cynthia Jevons 111 and Linton 121 countering. The second triple was much quieter scoring wise, however its doubles that count and Christine Patterson duly obliged on D17. Time for Sanderson to get some positive reaction from his side in the three pairs. Placing Ayres with Ray Hayes against the formidable Linton and Procktor proved successful, Ayres completing the 601 on D4. Jevons did the work in the 5th leg hitting a fine 125 and D12 for 1-4. Ladies Singles finalist Yvonne Rouffignac reduced the score line with a D14 for 2-4 at the break. Linton, another singles finalist (he is also in the pairs) featured in the first single and showed a little of what he is capable of by hitting 3x100 and D2 for the leg. There are no easy games in the singles semis this week and Linton will be one to avoid in the first round. A great tussle in the next between Procktor 140 and Rouffignac 100 resulted in a Porters win on D19. Three more Gogarty´s victories followed via Jevons D10, Brian Newton D4 and Richard Patterson on D8 plus 2x100. Veteran, comedian and all round nice guy Ayres concluded the match on D2 for the Porters, their fourth leg of the evening but an overall victory for Gogarty´s, both teams finishing the season 6th and 7th respectively. The Meerkats were outgunned in the scoring department by Busters, in a strange match that never really got going considering the players on show albeit with the absence of Pat Abrams currently caring for his unwell mother for whom our best wishes go for a speedy recovery. Bar the 170 game shot the highlight of the evening was Julie Hallett´s half time grub. Excellent samosas, bhajis, sandwiches, hot roast potatoes etc etc. Scrummy. Buster Mark Filer was probably the exception of the night hitting 4x100 and a couple of game shots. Typical Filer. His team mate Peter O´Rourke hit a couple of tons in his singles plus D10 and a nice piece of showboating going out on D16,D8 in the pairs. Paul Dowinton´s 140 and Filer´s two tons in the pairs wasn’t enough to win the leg even though they were 300+ points in front. Somehow the Kats, Lee Maiden and John Eyre nicked this incredulous leg in what was definitely a serious burglary. Irene Russell´s 116 wasn’t enough to get her down to a double against Paul Durrant who took out D15 in the first single. Alex Nikolov´s 76 game shot
(T20,D8) was the other highlight to Eyre´s 170 in a low key affair, but nevertheless a scrambled win for the champions. Not for the first time this season the Queens managed 5 legs this week, one short of a point and two legs short of victory. It will happen one day but not now this year. Major Royal Debbie Wright got the Queens off to a confident start in the 1001, taking out the double assisted by both Anns, Griffiths and O´Keeffe, despite some heavy scoring from Phil, the lesser known de Lacey. A laborious first triple had de Lacey stating it was more fun at the dentist and then proceeded to put everyone out of their misery hitting D6. Some lively scoring in the next from Wright and the better known de Lacey, Simone accompanied by Ray Green ended with Griffiths banging in D8 for a slender Queens lead. Phil de Lacey levelled on D2 in the next and then wife Simone got things going with a 140, Marie Dunne countering with an 83 and D15 for the lead once again. Tracey Simpson put some solid scores together in the final pairs but was outgunned by even bigger scores from Vi Turner, Griffiths finishing the 601 for 2-4 to the Queens. The Greens, Ray and Denise, were the captain´s choice for first and second singles and duly justified their selection with victories to level the match once again. O´Keeffe faced Ladies Singles finalist de Lacey in the next scoring well but better scoring from the Honey including her second 140 of the night was too much for the Royal, her opponent pegging out on D2. It was David and Goliath next, Dunne 4´6¨ against Phil de Lacey 7´6¨. The Queens have placed an official complaint against the Honeys claiming Phil should throw from 8´9?¨ instead of 7´9?¨, the giant´s reach being totally unfair against the diminutive Dunne. A meeting to determine the complaint´s outcome will be heard one week after the Presentation, the complaint I can already tell you is dismissed! De Lacey finished the leg on D14. Turner was next on winning her leg on D3 amid some awful renditions of songs from the second world war! Ray Green wrapped up the match in the 12th leg on yet another D3 for an overall 7-5 victory. SPAIN RISE TO CHALLENGE AGAINST WORLD’S BEST and soon the wheels were put in motion culminating in an amazing weekend of phenomenal Bowls. The Spanish Team included a few of the squad that were in Cyprus playing in an International 4 Nations Tournament, which was back to back with the Test Match. They had to stay at Gatwick all night, on the way back from Paphos, until the first flight back to Spain. Everybody that travelled back hadn’t slept for 24hours. Team Spain Ladies: Jan Dando, Sheri Fletcher, Lynn Greenland, Mary Cockell, Debbie Colquhoun, Peta Rhodes and Lisa Bonsor. Team Spain Men: Bill Pain, Graham Cathcart, Steve Pearson, Spain has just experienced an awesome weekend, playing the Scotland 2014 Commonwealth Games Bowls Team at Quesada Bowls Club. This historic event was the 1st ever Test match between Spain & Scotland. The first seeds were sown for this Test Match, in 2012 at the World Bowls Championships in Adelaide Australia and continued from the European Championships. Dialogue started toward the end of 2013 between David Gourlay, Head Coach for Bowls Scotland and ceded 4th in the World, with Pat Metcalfe, previous National Coach and Admin officer for the Spanish National Team. Quesada Bowls Club agreed to host the Test Match
Brian Robertson, Jackie Breslin, Steve Cantley and Pete Bonsor. On the first day Spain drew 1 game. Sheri Fletcher's Triple with Peta Rhodes and Mary Cockell finished 14 all against Scotland’s Claire Johnson, Lauren Baillie and, going for her 5th Commonwealth games, Margaret Letham. Jan Dando narrowly lost her Singles 19-21 to Caroline Brown World Singles Champion 2014. A great game to watch. On the second day, Bill Pain & Pete Bonsor managed a win by 1 shot against Paul Foster MBE and Alex Marshall MBE 19-18. On the 8th end Bill and Pete were 2 – 14 down. They dug deep and won the next 7 ends 18 - 14. They managed to win 1 more shot over the last 3 ends and Scotland manage 4 shots finishing, Spain 19 Scotland 18. In the Ladies Singles Lynn Greenland beat Caroline Brown 21 - 20. A brilliant game of Bowls drawing at 20 - 20 on 22 ends. Lynn was holding 3 shots on the last end and Caroline fired with her last bowl took out 1 shot and touched the Jack, but Lynn's bowls were in such a position that she still held 2 shots to finish the game. The whole weekend saw some phenomenal bowling. Thanks to the spectators who thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular games being played before them. Spain have been invited to Scotland for a return match and Scotland would like to come back to Spain again. This is a great compliment to the Spanish Team for giving Scotland such a great work out. There are many thanks to be given to President Mike Lamberton & Quesada Bowls Club committee for their very hard work in co-ordinating all the travel arrangements and making sure that everything ran smoothly. Thanks also go to the Umpires, Markers and board scorers who gave up their time to be involved. The whole weekend finished with a Gala dinner, organised by Jackie Breslin, at Quesada Bowls Club with music and dancing. A very fitting end to an amazing 2 days.

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB The Spring/Summer leagues have now started and in the SABA Spitfire League the Blenheims have got off to a good start, leading by 6 points after the second game. We are also into the second week of the new Valencian Champions League and the Quesada Lions are topping the league after the second week. This week the club has been honoured to host a test match between the Scottish Commonwealth Games Team and the Spanish International Team, the like that has never before been seen on the Costa Blanca. The event drew huge crowds to the club to see World Champion bowlers in action. A report of this event I am sure, will appear elsewhere in this newspaper. Well done to our club International squad players, Pete and Lisa Bonsor, who were involved in the Four Nations International Event in Cyprus, with the Ladies team winning the Gold Medal and together with the men, winning the Gold in the overall team prize. Well done to you all. For information about our club contact Joe Riley on 96572 5787 or e mail joediriley@gmail.com
VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Saturday saw the start of Vistabella’s new Club Roll up morning which was well attended despite the fact that a number of our members were involved in the San Luis 3-2-1 competition, Dane Howard had the honour of being the first ever winner so well done Dane. On Wednesday we welcomed our visitors Greenlands for the second VCL game and what a great game it was with four of the five games being decided by no more than 4 shots, fortunately for us the trips went our way by a slightly bigger margin to give us a 97 shots to 80 win, this along with winning 3 of the 5 disciplines gave us an 8 points to 4 win. We won the pairs with Eric and Lynne Bishop the Trips thanks to Martin Foulcer and Barbara and Arthur Brown and the Rinks with Stuart Allman, Andy Leggatt, Mike Regan and Barry Norris.

On Friday however the wheels fell off and both teams produced disappointing performances, the Greeners who had done so well to date, entertained Horadada Hawks and lost their first game of the new season by 4 points to 10 and 79 shots to 96. Our 4 points came from Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Pat Rafferty and Tony Sambrook, Avril Kendall and Brian Prockter. The Fairways struggled badly for the second week in succession losing by 2 points to 12 and 85 shots to 114. Our only bright spot came from Martin Foulcer, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee although three of our other rinks only lost by small margins. Let’s hope next week sees an improvement from both teams. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘The Correct Attitude for Playing Golf’ Everyone who has played golf will understand that the mood we are ‘in’ reflects in the way we play, there are days when we would be happier doing something else and this reflects in our score. There are times at golf when we become disappointed and depressed due to our inability to achieve our desired aims, resulting in the worst fault in golf, anger. Anger is the work of the personal ‘bully’ which many people take with them to the golf course, being too critical of their own performance, attempting to play above their own level of ability and from the ‘incorrect’ belief that winning is the only reason for playing. Failure does involve anger but starts with fear and this is introduced into golf in various ways, fear of losing, fear of winning and the fear created when faced with bunkers or water. Anger, fear and depression have an effect not only on our personal performance but also in the way we view others and blame them for our failures but it is essential that ‘we’ accept responsibility when things go wrong and take action to correct the situation. Poor shots are played by ‘all’ golfers, so when it happens to you, don’t be surprised and become angry, look upon it as a part of golf and forget it, ‘You know the consequences if you don’t’. A correct playing attitude requires that you are kind to yourself and accept responsibility and that you are patient and tolerant of other players, you owe it to yourself to try and enjoy the day out, before, during and afterwards. Maybe we should ask ourselves the question, what is golf all about anyway?

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY AT CAMPOAMOR This was the first time our Society has played Campoamor and it must have been on the top of everyone’s ‘to play list’, as there were 44 players ready to go and another ten on the waiting list at one time. We were not disappointed, everyone enjoyed the course, which was in excellent condition. It proved a testing course to play with the variation of holes, the different elevations and dog legs to content with. We played our usual Stableford competition with three divisions and also ‘The Albie Lush Trophy’. The Albie Lush is named after the first President of Montebello, who was very interested in golf so he started a golf society. On his passing away the people on Montebello decided to name a competition after him. Lo Crispin was asked to take it on when the trophy was not played for anymore, so a buffet was provided at The Lo Crispin Tavern to honour the occasion and as usual they did a grand job. The trophy was enthusiastically played for with the top score on the day taking the honours. In the end it came down to two people with top scores of 31 each, the winner on a count back of the back nine was Stan Earl, commiserations to Brian Smith a worthy looser. The results were: THE ALBIE LUSH TROPHY: Stan Earl c/b Gold Division: 1st Brian Smith 31pts, 2nd Harry Wilcock 27pts and 3rd Dicky Claeys 26pts.
Silver Division: 1st Stan Earl 31pts, 2nd Sue Smith 29pts and 3rd John Henderson 28pts. Bronze Division: 1st Dave Keating 30pts, 2nd Paul Carter 29pts and 3rd Danny McErlean 26pts (c/b) The best guest was Tony Monsellato 25pts. NTPs: Hole 2, nearest in 2 Brian Smith, hole 6 nearest in 1 Bob Gates, hole 11 nearest in 2 John Dunnion and hole 17 nearest in 1 Bob Gates. There was only one 2 which was John Jones. Rodrigues scores the goal that should ensure Elche’s top tier status - Photo: www.elchecf.es Prior to the start of this season, not since the fall of the Berlin Wall had Elche hosted a La Liga Football match, but on Saturday evening at La Rosaleda, on loan Garry Rodrigues' long range strike secured the win that should secure their top tier status again next season. Rodrigues struck after just 11 minutes to secure three much-needed points for Fran Escriba's side in their attempt to beat relegation in their first season back in the top flight, but were made to fight all the way as Alberto Botia's late red card saw them play out the final minutes with 10 men. The home side got off to a strong start and could have taken the lead with Darder's long-range effort but Elche came back with a chance of their own moments later. On-loan winger Rodrigues then handed Elche the lead with his first goal of the season as he fired home from the right channel to put Elche in front. Roque Santa Cruz came close to netting an equaliser midway through the first half but his curled effort from just outside the 18-yard box was tipped around the post by Manu Herrera.
The visiting goalkeeper was also quick to keep out Vitorino Antunes' fantastic effort minutes later as Malaga piled on the pressure going to the interval. Elche striker Richmond Boakye was replaced five minutes after the break due to injury and Malaga lost both Nacho Camacho and Jesus Gamez within eight minutes of each other after they too sustained knocks. In a dull second period home goalkeeper, and former Elche favourite, Willy Caballero, did well to keep out Javi Marquez's powerful header as the visitors looked to add a second and then Sergi Darder was unfortunate not to equalise with 10 minutes left as his brilliant longrange curled effort was caught by the ever-ready Herrara. As the pressure mounted on the visitors Elche’s reserve keeper Toño was dismissed from the bench with 22 minutes remaining and then as Illicitano’s clung on to their fragile lead Botia was shown red for a professional foul on 84 minutes. But despite the constant barrage from the home side Elche held on for all three points that will likely secure their La Liga status. Mucho Elche!

POW TO FACE EX WORLD CHAMPION IN GRAN CANARIA Former WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Gabriel Campillo (22,6,1, 9ko’s) moves up to Cruiserweight when he returns to action against Torrevieja’s Ricky Pow (11,2,1) in a non title fight in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria on 9 May in an event promoted by MaravillaBox. Madrid’s Campillo is currently sparring in Chicago with former opponent Andrzez Fonfara while Pow, who has recently split from long time manager and coach Alberto Gonzalez, has followed his good friend Kiko Martinez, and current IBF Super Bantamweight World Champion, to his new training camp in Elche. Meanwhile Pow has taken the Campillo fight instead of an opportunity of fighting for the IBO Latino light-heavyweight title on Keith Mayo’s big summer triple title show at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon next month. That fight has been put on hold until the outcome of his bout with former WBA world champion Campillo is known. Mayo said: “Ricky is still up for fighting on my show in June, but we just have to see how this fight goes.” “It would be a huge scalp for Ricky if he can beat Campillo and I’m hoping that I can get over to Gran Canaria to see it. Campillo, who won his title in 4 years ago with a majority decision over Beibut Shumenov, will be looking to use this fight to get his career back on track after he suffered a ninth round knock out by Andrzej Fonfara, who will now face Adonis Stevenson next month for the WBC crown, in Chicago back in August.
Campillo was originally due to fight Ibrahim Lopez who pulled out of the fight following his surprise defeat against Morocco’s Mustafa Chadlioui. In the main event Ceferino Rodriguez (15,0) defends the EU Welterweight title against Ismael El Massoudi (39,7) who held the WBA Interim Title for almost a year.

Both Anthony and Mat Ford-Dunn were in action at the weekend at the first round of the Spanish Supermoto Championships held in Villena, Alicante. The action for the Brothers had already started the week before, when they both made the long journey to France to compete in the first round of the Supermoto Grand prix’s. The Brothers both faired well with Anthony finishing 12th in the world championships and Mat finishing 23rd in the European Championships, but it was clear that they were outpaced by superior factory machinery. Although they struggled for pace against the superior factory bikes the Team learnt a great deal that weekend and have many things to test over the coming weeks to improve the ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ sponsored, Supermotoland race bikes. The racing at Villena, Alicante was held in sunny but blustery conditions and both brothers got their championship challenges off to a solid start. Anthony qualified 3rd in the Premier SM Open championship class, and finished 5th, 2nd and 4th in his three races to come away with a 3rd overall for the days racing. The results could have been even better but the Villena circuit is notoriously difficult to pass on and a lot of the race depends on how good a start you get. Anthony had the crowd on its feet in Race 2 when he put in an almost impossible overtaking move on the last lap to take 2nd place at the Flag. Older Brother Mat qualified in pole position for the SM35 Master championship and finished his two races in 2nd and 3rd position that gave him a 3rd overall for the days racing. Once again his results could have been even better but a crash on the first lap of race two whilst he was leading saw Mat have to remount in last position and fight through the pack to get a well deserved 3rd place at the flag. Team Sponsor Shane Stratton from Stratton Motorsports had flown in especially to watch the racing and was Happy to see both his riders on the rostrum with some good championship points under their belts. The Brothers next race in the Catalan championships on the 11th may at Menarguens in Catalunya. More details and race results can be found at www.supermotoland.com
