CRIME RATES DOWN IN SPAIN isdemeanours and crime affecting victims aged over 64 increased last year by 7.1% compared to the data of 2012, with burglaries and robberies seeing a staggering 29.2% recorded increase, thefts were up 10% as were reported scams, up by 9.9%, however records of street robberies should an equally dramatic shift, but this time decreasing by 21.1%, according to figures released by the Ministry of the Interior. The details were released as part of a Safer Society initiative launched last year, the first time such a campaign has focused on the over 64 age group, who represent 17.7% of the population of the country. As a result, the police embarked on a nationwide campaign visiting the elderly members of society, with pre-
M
sentations at over 2,200 daycare centres, as well as visits to individuals to offer crime prevention advice. The initiative also looked specifically at crime in schools, where a 3.7% decrease was recorded overall. The data collected serves to allow better policing in crime prevention and detection, as investigators become more aware of trends in crime, and are subsequently able to deal with more issues in advance. Figures released this week reveal the crime statistics for the first quarter of this year now indicate an overall drop of 4.1% compared to the same period of 2013, with the records being collated to include national figures, but also broken down into Autonomous Communities and provinces. In addition, for the first time, data from the provincial capitals and cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants (according to the official census of the National Statistics Institute to the date of January 1, 2013) are given. Continued from Page 1 In a press conference detailing the date, Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, explained how “crime statistics are becoming more complete, more accessible and more transparent”, which results in the law enforcers being able to work towards “an increasingly safer country”, with the transparency of the data being of legitimate interest” of citizens in relation to knowledge of public information. With the inclusion of the many different police forces from around the country, including the likes of the Basque and Catalan police, the Ertzaintza, Mossos d'Esquadra, the Guardia Civil, National Police and others, the data presented shows an image more in line with reality of incidences of crime in Spain. In the first quarter of 2014, have has been a total of 515,315 crimes and misdemeanours recorded in Spain, which represents a decrease of 4.1% over the same period of 2013, when the figure was 537,223. These figures result in a crime rate of 45.6 offenses per 1,000 people. This rate has been reduced by 0.5 points compared to the rate of December 2013 as a result of declining known criminal offenses. Although the number of homicides has increased compared with the same period last year, increasing from 79 to 86, the worst place being Andalucía where 20 homicides were recorded, an incredible increase of 42.9%, violent crime in general has suffered a significant decline of 14.1%, as has robberies with intimidation, which fell by 16.7%, and theft of motor vehicles which dropped 14.4%. For the Valencia region, there were 60,192 crimes and offens-

Violent crime saw a 19% drop with 2,337 cases, robbery with violence and intimidation fell by 24% with 1,850 cases, whereas theft of motor vehicles dropped by 21%, with 1,100 records. In fact, across Valencia, with the exception of homicide, all crime categories were decreased. In Orihuela, there was an 8.9% drop in Crimes and Offences, with 862 records in the first quarter of this year, there were no homicides recorded, and violence dropped by 27.3%, with 24 recorded incidents, robbery with intimidation dropped by 36% to 16 and theft of motor vehicles dropped by 28.6%. All criminal categories in Orihuela showed a reduction in the first quarter, with the exception of the zero figure recorded for homicide. The situation is not quite as positive for Torrevieja, although there are some elements of decrease. Crimes and offenses increased by 4.8% to 1,542, there were 2 homicides, which resulted in a recorded 200% increase over the same period of last year. Violent crime saw a decrease of 22.7% to 51 cases, robbery with violence and intimidation dropped by 26.5% to 36, but robberies using force increased by a concerning 18.4% to 334, similar to robberies with force from homes which increased by a worrying 21.6% to 225. Overall theft increased by 9,4% to 501, but all other categories showed a decline, including thefts of motor vehicles, down 19.2% to just 21 cases.

AIRPORT CHARGES FROZEN IN 2015 The Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, has announced that the Spanish airport authority, AENA, will freeze rates in 2015, rather than imposing the anticipated 4.5% increase in fees. The announcement will be good news for airlines, as they will no longer have to pay more for using the airports of the country, a saving which should therefore be reflected in flight prices for passengers. In 2014, the rise in airport charges was 0.9% compared to the 2.5% that legislation allowed, in order to offset the 18 billion euro investment over a decade. Meanwhile, April saw an increase in passenger traffic, with more than 16.2 passenger movements in total, an increase of 9.2% over the same period of 2012.
The main airports of the country all saw an increase, with the newly named Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport seeing a 7.6% increase, Barcelona-El Prat grew by 10.8% and AlicanteElche airport seeing a 9.6% increase, amongst others.

TELECOM ACT GIVES OPERATORS FREEDOM TO PLACE TRANSMITTERS The new act means that telecommunication companies are now free to install these mobile phone masts anywhere they choose
There was an element of excitement in the announcement that the new General Telecommunications Act was approved by the Spanish government, especially the element which would guarantee 10 Meg broadband to all by 2017, but questions are now being asked about elements of implementation of the network that would allow this to happen. The act was approved by all political groups, after a total of 179 amendments were put in place, but the biggest concern now being raised are in line with previous worries over the damage caused by harmful radiation emitted from transmitters and telecoms networks. As reported in November of last year, the Los Verdes Green party of Orihuela announced plans to create an ordinance to regulate the installation of mobile phone masts, with the intention of removing all unlicensed antennas and transmitter sites, with a lot of detail provided by the Councillor for the Environment on the dangers associated with these masts. Similarly, in April of this year, we reported how the Planning Department of Torrevieja town hall had ordered Telefónica to remove an antenna located on a green area of the urbanization El
Chaparral-La Siesta, because it didn´t have the appropriate licences in place for its location. Now, as part of the newly approved act, telecommunication companies are free to install these mobile phone masts anywhere they choose, and on any roof top deemed necessary, without either the residents or the council having a say or objection. Critics are now saying that the new law has been “tailor-made” to facilitate the implementation of the more modern 4G mobile networks in all urban areas, but that will also aggravate and increase the health risks associated with these powerful transmitters. The modern world sees most people attached to their mobile phones, perhaps not prepared to either give them up or suffer the consequences of a reduction in network coverage, but those who have filed cases based on damage to health may see another side to this aggressive act. The only requirement within the act is that the operators must ask permission from the Industry Ministry before placing their equipment on the residential or commercial building of their choice, but the justification of being of commercial benefit is all that is likely to be needed over the damage to health, or the aesthetics of an area where those who object will now be powerless to act.

CALLS FOR LADY OF ELCHE TO RETURN HOME
La Dama de Elche (The Lady of Elche), found in La Alcudia in 1897, is one of the most famous sculptures in the world. Currently it is kept on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid but Mercedes Alonso, the Elche mayor, has said that, as was the case in 2006, he wants to see it back on display in the city before too much longer.
"I believe that the sculpture should be spending rather more time in the city than she does," he said at a breakfast briefing organized by New Economy Forum last week, recalling that when the bust was moved to Elche from Madrid eight years ago, and displayed in el Palacio de Altamira it was warmly received and cared for by it’s new custodian and it was never put at any risk. Alonso said that the City has raised the issue on several occasions with the minister of culture, José Ignacio Wert, and says that he feels that the Government of Spain will be sensitive to his request. "We are currently working on the situation together and while it is a process that has certain formalities, I am optimistic that we will soon come to an arrangement regarding dates for the display of the Lady of Elche in our city," the mayor added, noting that being able to visit to sculpture in it’s home will contribute enormously to the ability of the city to attract tourism.

THE RUSSIANS ARE STILL CO MING TO TORREVIEJA
The latest data published by the census department reveals two very striking statistics for the city of Torrevieja, firstly, despite the reduction in British and German residents, the population in May has reached its highest figure ever, and secondly, that the now fastest growing community are the Russians, boasting one of the largest number of permanent residents in the country. The resident registered population of Torrevieja now stands at 108,060, breaking the 108,000 figure for the first time in history, with an additional 660 residents joining the census since the start of the year. Of that number, just 46% are Spanish, a total of 50,721, the majority 54% being immigrants. There are now 12,747 British residents, still holding the highest proportion, but with the 3,906 German residents, the collective figure has reduced by 700. Now in second place are the Russian residents, with a total of 5,035, the first time the 5,000 barrier has been reached, but with many Russians choosing not to register as residents, the real figure is known to be much higher. Whereas the British and German communities have dropped, the Russian registered population has increased by 110 residents in just 5 months, since the start of the year. Other groups boasting high figures are 3,239 residents from Sweden, 3,077 from Morocco, 2,971 from Bulgaria, 2,762 from Romania, 2,402 from Norway, 2,230 from Ukraine, 1,651 from Belgium, and a total of 1,343 from Finland, collectively combining as part of the total of 116 nationalities represented by the diverse and culturally enriched immigrant population of the city.

It's Spring so how can we make your investments bloom?
hopping for new investments tends to be a much more appealing activity than carrying out a thorough overhaul of your old ones. Many ex-pats have investments that they have not reviewed for years and with the right advice could be yielding much better returns utilising tax saving vehicles to enhance the benefits. Professional advice is so important these days. It's all too tempting to skip straight to investing, people are enticed by dreams of the potential riches on offer instead of taking a proper stepby-step approach to reviewing their investments. One of the most common traps people fall in to is listening to friends who think they are in the know. People's attention gets gripped by the latest thing, whether Russia is 'cheap' and a good buy right now instead of focusing on their overall holdings and what they are trying to achieve with them. This could lead to a portfolio that is just a random selection of yester-
S
day's investment ideas rather than a portfolio that works towards a goal and that suits your risk approach. After this stern warning, some good news. You should carry out a full health check on your investments once a year, doing it more often can actually be bad for you. You can overdo it, and risk falling into another trap, which is being tempted into constantly making small changes and racking up extra costs. So what is the best way to review your portfolio? Start the process by thinking about why you began investing and whether your goals and timetable remain the same. Many people invest for more than one reason at time. But over time, one or more aspects of your personal circumstances might have changed, like your job situation or receiving an inheritance. Most people have money languishing in UK banks earning not enough to keep up with inflation, receiving interest that is taxed at source when they could be earning around the 5% mark in a tax efficient way. So what should you do? In the current uncertain economic climate I would urge you to speak to a professional financial adviser today and arrange a review of your circumstances. Don’t delay, get in touch today. Look after your wealth and your wealth will look after you. If you need independent, impartial advice on your financial future please contact me by email dave.diggle@blacktowerfm.com or call me on 615 607 278 to arrange a free consultation. The above information was correct at the time of preparation and does not constitute investment advice and you should seek advice from a professional adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity.

HUNDREDS CELEBRATE EUROPEAN DAY IN TORREVIEJA roving testament to what the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, described as a “living example of tolerance, peace, integration, unity and harmony among citizens of each of the 27 member states of the European Union and the rest of the world”, hundreds of international residents who represent their own countries, gathered in their adopted home town centre, to celebrate the day which marks the birth of modern day Europe, the 2014 European Day celebration. The proceedings began at 10:30 in the Plaza De La Constitución, with Scottish Pipers providing a musical introduction to the event. The mayor then took over the formal announcements, accompanied by the councillor for foreign residents, Rosario Martínez, the head of the International Residents Office, Jean Paul Molero and former head
P
Graham Knight, who in turn were joined by four representatives of the next generation of European residents, children of Swedish, German, Italian and English origin, who each read a poem in their own native tongue. Dolón himself made a multilingual welcome to the gathering crowds, speaking in both Spanish and English, thanking everybody for taking part, whilst also highlighting the unique and cosmopolitan city that Torrevieja has become. The European flag was then raised in the main square, with the musical accompaniment of Beethoven´s Ode to Joy, remaining flying high for the rest of the day. As the formalities were done, it was time for the more joyous celebrations to take over, with singing and dancing, and even an appearance my Michael Jackson, albeit in tribute form by the Grupo Factor Danza. Whilst the party continued, a number of none-profit groups had been invited to take advantage of the situation, by offering information and advice on living in Spain, providing details of such important elements such as hospitals and healthcare. In fact, now firmly fixed as the most important event in terms of recognising Europe across the continent, the 9th of May is now also equally as important to the city of Torrevieja, perhaps because of the uniqueness of the international population, which the day serves to both represent and honour, whilst celebrating being part of the continent of Europe.
REMAINING FOOTBRIDGES TO OPEN BY MONTH END The two remaining footbridges of the Orihuela Costa, one at the site of the future school, the other near the Zenia Boulevard, are nearing completion. The construction sites are set to be handed back to the town hall during the week commencing the 19th of May, with a view to them opening, once the relevant checks and documentation has been completed, at some point around a week later. Although not part of the original plan, one of the further improvements agreed by the engineers building the bridges, is energy saving and efficient L.E.D. lighting, which will last longer than traditional fittings and serve to save money and energy during their use.

SOCIAL MEDIA USERS ARRESTED IN SPAIN
espite the fact that the honour is usually reserved for human recipients, policemen who have been wounded or killed in the pursuit of their duties, Jorge Fernandez Diaz, the Spanish Interior Minister, last week took it upon himself to award the country’s top policing medal, the gold medal of police merit, to an icon of the Virgin Mary, in Malaga. The outcome is that the Spanish Press have now dubbed the ministry ‘The Monastery of the Interior’ and if you would care to call up the website www.change.org you will find a petition requesting a similar award for Spiderman. But this is not the only eccentric news item to appear in the Spanish media in recent days. We also had the headline surrounding the proposed Citizens' Security Law, which prescribes fines of up to 600,000 euros for unauthorised street protests - and up to 1,000 euros for anyone losing their identity document more than three times in five years. But despite her decoration, it would seem that the Virgin Mary has done a less than stellar job of policing Twitter in recent weeks - following the necessity of the anti-terror intervention by the Guardia Civil, a social media sweep that has incidentally been christened "Operation Spider". It would seem that the police have detained 21 social media users for allegedly "glorifying terrorism" on Twitter and Facebook. Fifteen of them were arrested in northern Spain, the regions of Navarre and the Basque Country, two of whom were minors. Among the alleged glorifications of terrorism, apparently, was a tweeted map of the Basque Country, adorned with the Basque word for independence, a crime for which, if convicted, the tweeters and
D
Facebookers will face up to two years in prison. One of the Facebook posts complained that, two years ago, in the austerity stricken country, when banks prompted a surge in suicides, as they oversaw the eviction of over 500 families a day from their properties, the government took little or no action against the bankers, rather they protected and defended them. So when did drawing attention to state hypocrisy become a crime? This will mean that the two years of incarceration potentially facing tweeters is a full two years more than the amount of prison time faced by, for example, those torture-happy policemen who still openly wander the nation’s streets thanks to a post-Franco amnesty law, which took away any hopes of justice for the many victims of Francoist crimes.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE BULLS? The decision of the bullfighting club Tendido 7 y l'Hermitage in hiring a topless woman to publicise the upcoming Sant Vicent Ferrer by walking topless through the streets of Zeneta Xilxes for just over half an hour has sparked controversy in the region. The organisers of the Sant Vicent Ferrer de la Vall d'Uixó say that they are extremely unhappy with the President of the club, David Pitarch, saying that "what happened is demeaning to women as a prestigious festival such as Sant Vicent Ferrer. They said that the commission had nothing to do with the hiring of the woman and they had no record of it, so the matter was not of their doing. They also apologized for the President’s actions. A spokesman of the Penya l'Hermitage justified the decision
by saying that the young was hired for a bit of fun and to provide a little publicity to the upcoming fair. It was little more than a joke, and they certainly did not expect their actions to have the national impact that it has. The PSOE PSPV in La Vall D'Uixó criticized the incident, saying that hiring a topless woman as poster "is attacking the dignity of women." The Socialists also stressed in a statement that they must "be strong in rejecting and preventing any attack on the dignity of persons. The have also demanded that the mayor and councilors of all parties issue an official statement of rejection. Unfortunately in many areas of Spain bullfighting continues to be recognized, not as the cruel spectacle that it is, but as a cultural heritage, as the Spanish Senate continues to allow the use of public funds to sustain the industry, despite substantial opposition from the vast majority of the Spanish public.
POLICE OFFICER DIES AFTER INJURY INCURRED IN 2012 ARREST An officer of the Spanish National Police, José Manuel Pardo Souto, died on Wednesday as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty in 2012. On the 23rd of October, 2012, José Manuel Pardo Souto was involved in the detention of a habitual prisoner, when, during a struggle, he struck his head, receiving a significant blow to the front of his head outside the police station in Lugo, rendering him unconscious. Since then, the officer has remained in a coma, sadly losing his life on Wednesday of this week. At the time of his death, he was 40 years of age, married and had two children. A memorial service was held at the social centre of his home town, As Nogais, after it was also announced he is to be awarded a posthumous Silver Medal of merit for service by the Directorate General of Police in recognition of his outstanding performance.

VISIT ALCALA del JUCAR, A SURPRISE IN EVERY CORNER A day out to the lovely inland village of Alcala del Jucar certainly brings with it some surprises. The fascinating drive up takes us past no fewer than 6 different castles. Add to that the castle which towers over the village of Alcala del Jucar and you will see seven different castles in one day. Between the castles the landscape is constantly changing. Fields of vines give way to fields of almond, olive and orange trees. An interesting variety of villages, small towns dot our route. Our first stop is Almansa. It was here in 1707 that the final battle of the Spanish war of succession was fought. On one side were the troops of Austria, Britain, Prussia and the Nederlands. On the other side stood the troops of France, Spain and Bavaria. A battle which resulted in the French speaking Charles II ascending to the Spanish throne. Although Almansa castle became a prize of war that day, the castle itself dates back to Moorish times. After a visit to Almansa we set off through fields, pine forests and mountain ranges before finally dropping in to the beautiful gorge where sits the delightful cave village of Alcala del Jucar. Whitewashed fronts of cave houses sweep down the mountain side. The Medieval castle perches above the houses on a white limestone rock. Below this the deep green waters of the river Jucar sweep through the valley. Your first sight of this fabulous village is quite breath taking. Time in the village is followed by three course lunch with wine in a restaurant which offers us a panoramic view of the gorge and surrounding countryside. Later for those who want to, a

guided walk down through the village which will include a cave visit is offered. For those who are less energetic, there is the option of spending more time in the centre of the village. Either way, this beautiful, peaceful location offers a really memorable day out at the affordable price (including lunch) of only 27 euro and will be available from David’s Coachtrips SL every Sunday. Enquiries and reservations can be made by phone on (0034) 966785910 or online at www.coachtripsonline.com The entire area is absolutely beautiful The buildings on la Playa de Babilonia were in a state of ruin, both abandoned and impossible to refurbish so the Provincial Directorate of Coasts came to an agreement with the owners to proceed with the controlled demolition. And so the gentle sound of the waves lapping up onto the beach and the squawking of seagulls was suddenly cut short on Monday to make way for a noisy bulldozer that had both properties torn down in a fraction of the time that they had taken to erect some 50 years earlier. A coastal official said that both seafront houses were likely to fall down at any time and as such they were a constant danger to members of the public. They could not be rebuilt because of both current legislation and the fact that they were so close to the sea so the only course of action was their demolition. Those residents who still live in the adjacent properties and who struggle to keep their homes in a habitable condition watched with awe as the demolition took place. The City of Guardamar del Segura say they have spent years trying to find a solution to this problem which, at times resembles the city of Venice, as the Mediterranean waters lap up to the front doors of the properties. The City Council congratulated the Provincial Directorate of Coasts on their action because the poor state of these homes are "one of the images that damages Guardamar beach”. They believe that their demolition benefits the tourist image of the town. "Tourism is the economic engine of our city and to have a beach on which people can enjoy the sand and the sea without the danger of dilapidated buildings is paramount to this activity,” said Jesus Huertas said yesterday, Councillor for Works.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
EXPATS AND DOGS s an expat and a dog lover, the way that dogs and other animals are treated in Spain often distresses me. As far as dogs are concerned, with the help from expats from other countries, much has been learned about animal welfare, and although the number of dogs abandoned each year remains at appalling high levels, in my experience, cases of cruelty are now being listened to and usually acted upon, although there remain some distressing exceptions.
A
A few days ago, I received an email from Pat, an Irish expat living in Spain’s Costa del Sol. Pat and her partner, Paul, had been walking their small terrier, Susie, on some waste land earlier in the day. This was something that the couple did once or twice each day, because although they lived in a villa, it was small and lacked enough space for a lively terrier to chase around in. Susie, a friendly, but not the most reliable of dogs, was chasing her ball at the end of a long extending lead, when a large German Shepherd dog appeared and began to attack the small dog. Paul ran after Susie, and quickly picked up the small dog, who was bleeding around her neck and front legs and was clearly in some pain. The German Shepherd then began to viciously attack Paul, who was still holding Susie, and knocked him to the ground. Pat was frantic and was calling for help as she tried to beat the dog off Paul and Susie with her large handbag. Eventually, the owner of the German Shepherd appeared, called the dog, but it ignored her. Other dog walkers appeared and rushed to help the struggling couple. Eventually the German Shepherd was pulled off Paul by its German
owner, leaving Paul badly injured with severe lacerations to his arm, legs and face. The incident was reported to the police, the owner tracked down and the German Shepherd was destroyed. George spent two days in hospital, not only recovering from severe bites, but also a reoccurrence of his heart condition. Susie remained in the veterinary hospital receiving treatment for severe lacerations, with some doubt as to whether one of her legs will function properly again. Meanwhile, the expat German owner of the dog faces prosecution, as well as a large claim for damages. This incident reminds me of several attacks by dogs that I too have witnessed. Many expats live in small apartments or small properties, wish to have a dog and often purchase one that grows to a far bigger size than originally intended, or the ‘macho’ thing creeps in whereby they just have to have a big dog, regardless of the fact that they have no outdoor space, and are too lazy to exercise it regularly. Many dogs, of all sizes, lack regular walks and exercise and, as a result, have an abundance of pent up energy and frustration that causes the kind of trouble experienced by Pat and Paul. As Pat said, it was not the fault of the dog, but the fault of the owners. The message from this distressing story is clear, unless you wish to be faced with a large claim for damages and injury, or the distress of having your dog destroyed, don't get a large one if you live in an apartment, or any dog, come to that. If you must have a dog, make sure that
you can look after it, ensure that it is exercised regularly and don't leave it on its own in an apartment barking all day. If you cannot do this, get stick insects. THE CAR THAT SAVED A N INDUSTRY ubbed as the car that saved Seat, and having sold over 5 million units since it first rolled out of the rundown Barcelona factory in 1984, the Seat Ibiza had a lot to celebrate on its 30th birthday last week. Rather more than simply a best-selling model: it was the car that actually saved the company following the withdrawal from Seat of the Italian car manufacturer Fiat in 1984. Now, over its three decades of existence it has become the brand’s top-selling model. The car was originally a pieced together model, with Italian design and a German body and a 44 horsepower engine, which cost 825,000 pesetas – close to €5,000, around €15,600 today. The basic model is currently on sale for €8,900. The plant itself really was an antiquated construction. It employed over 33,000 workers, all at risk of injury as its cars were dragged around the building on chains. Indeed any modern day, self respecting, health and safety officer would have a fit at some of the practices carried out in the factory on a day to day basis. The building had sticky floors, it was freezing cold in the winter and boiling hot in the summer as the concept of work-related hazards was not in the managers’ dictionary back then. Meanwhile, Volkswagen was considering the purchase of a Spanish car brand. Vicenç Aguilera, former director of Seat’s Technical Center and
D
currently president of the Automotion Cluster of Catalonia, joined Seat in 1982. “The Ibiza had been on the drawing board for a year, and it was a way to keep Volkswagen interested in us,” he recalls. The German company finally bought Seat on December 30, 1985. The Ibiza was a patchwork car. Its design was Italian, its body German, and its engine was put together in such a way by Porsche’s engineers that it would adapt to Seat’s existing technology at the Barcelona plant. The icing on the cake was the name
someone came up with for the car: Ibiza, the Mediterranean island that conjured up visions of the sea, parties and youthful abandon. And, as an added bonus, the car also came with an unknown luxury at the time: air conditioning. From the outset the car did very well, and in just a short while it had managed to pull Seat back from the brink as the company began seeing a future for itself once again. “The Ibiza represented survival, it was a vital contribution,” said Aguilera. A brand new factory was built in Martorell, in 1993, the new home for the second, and subsequent, generation Ibiza’s. The car also got immediate international exposure. Of the five million units sold over the last three decades, 3.5 million were shifted outside Spain in Italy, France, Germany, Britain, Portugal, Israel and Mexico. Exports in 2013 represented 85 percent of all Ibiza sales. These days, the Martorell plants (10,000 employees, or 15,000 including Seat Components) are clean like an industrial kitchen, there is background music, and the car parts spend just three hours on the production line before they are complete. Both men and women work here now, as opposed to the early days, when female employees could only do cable work or sew the upholstery. The Ibiza joins a select club of cars that can boast about having made it to 30, and which also includes the Volkswagen Golf, the Opel Corsa and the Ford Fiesta.

THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE
.. By
ou may have heard of the Bowen Technique and the results that people have had from it..so here is an overview of Bowen. The Bowen Technique is classed as an remedial therapy. As such the mplication is that is provides a remedy but by itself this would be a limitation when it comes to talking about The Bowen Technique. Remedy in the dictionary talks about cure, heal, resolve disease and from this perspective it places the therapist to perform but this is not the way that Bowen works. In most societies it is very hard for most people to achieve a clear balanced lifestyle without living in a hermetically sealed environment. Even if we eat a good healthy, well balanced, organic diet, the chances are we will be exposed to stresses and conditions that our human bodies were not designed for, as we are subject to many elements beyond our personal control. Air, water, soil quality, infection are all areas that will have an impact on the balance of our system. To this is added the manner of the way we travel, sit, eat and our recreation etc. Our exposure to physical, mental, and emotional stress and the amount that we ask our bodies to do increases by the day. For the most part we take it for granted that we will be able to take on whatever comes at us, but when something goes wrong, we want things to happen quickly. The fact that The Bowen Technique allows the body to do the work means that when there is a breakdown of the system, the process of readjustment can be rapid. A Bowen therapist does not make things happen, but simply allows the body to ask itself what needs to be done. When it happens it is can not only very quick but also long lasting. The Bowen Technique is a “hands off, hands on” treatment. The therapist used their thumbs or fingers in certain specific points around the body making rolling type moves over the soft tissue – muscle, tendon, ligament- and in between each set of moves, leaves the room to allow a response to take effect. The moves are gentle and the client should experience little or no pain during the treatment, although there will be certain areas which might be tender and sensitive. In addition, the therapist requires little in the way of physical effort and a such it is an ideal alternative to more physicallybased treatments.
Y
HOW MANY TREATMENTS?
A piece of string question but as therapists in today's environment, a small number of treatments is very much the norm and a conversation with most Bowen practitioners will reveal that the average number of treatments is around two to three. Having said this however it is important to point out that there are many occasions where several treatments might be advisable or required. Also, with situations such as strokes, arthritis, and other long term illnesses, there will be no limit to the number of treatments that a client may receive, possibly over an extended period. There are also a good number of people who find it great benefit from having “top up” treatments, which both prevent them from becoming injured and keep them supple and relaxed. WHAT DOES IT TREAT? Bowen itself doesn't treat anything and indeed one of the principles is that we don't treat specific conditions. The nice thing about Bowen is that there is no situation where it cannot be used safely and effectively. As well as structural or muscular problems, the Bowen Technique also has a profound effect on a whole range of organic conditions. The most common presentations are neck and back pain, shoulder restrictions, or “frozen shoulder”, general aches and pains with which we are all afflicted. In addition, Bowen can be useful for other less obvious problems such as ME, MS, hay fever, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, asthma, migraine, constipation, eczema, and others. Once again this is not a list that defines diseases that we can treat, more an example of the kind of conditions that can and do respond positively to Bowen treatments. THERE IS A LOT MORE INFORMATION THAT HAS NOT BEEN COVERED HERE TODAY SO WHY NOT HAVE A BOWEN TREATMENT AND SEE THE RESULTS. Please contact Christine Quinlan at Body Harmony and book your appointment. At Body Harmony, you can also book Reflexology, Angelic Reiki, Therapeutic Massage, Hopi Ear Candling, Indian Head Massage. Semi finals night at Breakaways had everything, great atmosphere, venue, audience, raffle, buffet and of course great darts. All participants have now been determined for this Thursday´s finals and presentation at the excellent Breakaways venue. Sid Cross has qualified for both singles and pairs finals, one of two players attempting the double, the other John Linton narrowly losing out in the pairs and to Cross himself in the singles. The strong pairing of Mark Filer and Ray Harvey will face Cross and Steph Simpson in the final, the latter a previous pairs finalist. Pat Abrams had to overcome team mate Alex Nikolov in the quarters and then John Walker in the semis, in order to play this week. The Abrams, Walker match was a real cracker, going the 5 leg distance with 17 ton pluses, a ton plus game shot and even a maximum. Fantastic darts from two great players. Leah Chesworth made her first final after narrowly losing out last season and will face Yvonne Rouffignac who disposed of favourite Simone de Lacy who didn’t quite find the form she is known for. Rouffignac was however a worthy winner in two straight legs. Chesworth now running the Sporting Life (Los Dolses) with partner Karl Cooper had a tougher task into the final overcoming the colourful (as in language) Marie Dunne. A tight game where the girl from Ireland taught those on stage and in the front rows a few new expletives during a match that went all 3 legs. The evening commenced with the Mens Singles quarter finals, pitching Kevin Wood (Que Pasa) against John Linton (Gogarty´s) in the first match. In the 5 leg game both acquitted themselves well, Linton taking first blood on D10, including a ton. A 140 from Wood in the second enabled the Eagle to take out D4 to level. Heavy scoring from both in the third ended in a D12 from Linton for 2-1. Wood immediately responded with a ton, setting up a nice 70 out (S15,S15,D20) for 2 all. Wood won the right to throw in the decider, but couldn’t make it count, both players a little nervy on the T20. Linton held his nerve when it came to the double and planted D19 for the 5th leg and match. Pat Abrams faced fellow Meerkat Alex Nikolov in the second quarter and promptly won the bull. A 140 followed, countered by a Nikolov ton. Abrams had first opportunity at the double and posted a D8 for an early lead. His opponent had first throw in the second and looked likely to level after 120 and 100, but a tasty 66 out after a 100, shat-
tered the likeable Bulgarian´s hopes. It look ominous for Nikolov as Abrams started with a ton in the third but his opponent´s 100,95,95 response appeared to be enough to keep him in the match. It wasn’t to be however as Abrams completed the leg on D2 for a surprising 30 score line. Hattons Hunks only singles representative Sid Cross, won the right of throw in the third quarter against yet another Meerkat Lee Maiden. All 5 legs went with throw, the first a fine 112 out (T20,S20,D16) from the Hunk. A 121 and 100 from Maiden in the second enabled the Kat to draw level on D20. Two more tons from Maiden should have been enough to break Cross´s throw, but the man from Sidcup hit a ton of his own plus D5 for 2-1. Maiden, the man who earlier this season hit back to back maximums, really opened up in the fourth with 140,100,100 and D17. Cross nowhere to be seen. Both players forgot where the treble was in the decider, but Cross had won the bull for the throw which was to prove decisive as he planted a D9 for the leg and match. The fourth Meerkat to qualify, John Eyre, had the unenviable task of facing an in form John Walker. Despite winning the bull, Eyre had no answer to Walker´s first leg onslaught. 95,95,99,105, surprisingly ended with an unusual D1 for a 1-0 advantage. Having broken the Kat´s throw, the Eagle started the second with a 140 and 180. There was little response from the experienced Eyre, as requiring 72 his opponent hit S20,S20,D16 for 2-0. The Meerkat opened the lead in the third against his free scoring adversary, adding a 99 to other decent numbers, however he was pegged back with a 100 and 95 to leave 58 points by the man from Que Pasa. Eyre missed his opportunity of a shot and Walker doesn’t these days, using just two darts, S18,D20 for the third leg and 3-0. Yvonne Rouffignac made what appeared to be a tough task, relatively easy facing a player who has regularly performed well all season Simone de Lacy. The Porterhouse player gained a positive advantage by winning the bull and then posted 80+. De Lacy replied with a ton and an 80+, but the leg was nip and tuck down to a double, which the Porter converted first and a one leg advantage on D7. De Lacy´s form seemed to be deserting her, however some poor scores were topped with a decent 95 to reduce the points deficit. Rouffignac took control of the leg to ensure first poke at the double and requiring 34, hit S2 and D16 for the match. The Porter admitted to stage nerves after the match, but looked more comfortable than the losing favourite. Shirley Roberts offered her scoring services once again for the second semi and virtually made the referee redundant by taking over all responsibilities and doing a damn good job in doing so. Very accomplished! A 25 from the ever smiling Leah Chesworth gave the Madigans, now Sporting Life girl, the advantage of throw. A massive 126 gave the Misfit a comfortable lead and despite an 80 and 75 from the inimitable Marie Dunne, Chesworth took the leg on D2. The next leg was also won on D2 but this time from the Pint Depot Queen. Chesworth again won the bull in the decider, which was enough to reach the double first, completing the leg and match on D4. I wouldn’t like to pick a winner from the two able finalists, but be assured it will be a close affair and not to be missed. The Mens Pairs finalists was contested by a round robin format, necessary due to one player seemingly forgetful he had a semi final to contest, deciding to visit the UK instead. Most people these days have diaries and would have avoided entry to a competition having prepublished dates for all rounds of the competition since September last or am I being pedantic? Anyway we have a great final looming this week between Sid Cross and partner Steph Simpson from Hattons Hunks and Mark ¨the dragon¨ Filer and Ray Harvey from the Busters bar. Each of the three remaining pairs played each other, with the distinct possibility of each winning one game, which is exactly what happened. Countback then came into operation on how many legs were won which concluded that Steve Woods and John Linton were elimi-
nated, missing out by just one leg. Their 2-0 defeat in the first match costing them the opportunity of a 6 dart shoot out, should all three pairs have the same points and legs. Bad luck for the Gogarty´s boys who despite 5 scores of 80+ in the first leg to Harvey and Filer succumbed to the latter´s 140 and D16. A Linton 100 and a Woods 140, would usually be enough to level, but a 98 and 85 from Harvey plus a 95 and 135 from Filer enabled the dragon to finish the 601 on D8 for 2-0. The losers stayed on to face Cross and Simpson. A classy S18,D16 from Linton made it 1-0 for the Gogarty´s pair, Woods hitting 119 and 85. Further massive scores from the Gophers, particularly from Linton, looked likely to end up in a 2-0 victory, but Cross 125 and Simpson countered, Simpson hitting a tasty 68 out (T20,D4) in two. Linton enjoyed throw in the third gaining a 98 before D20 for the leg and match. The Hunks stayed on to complete the round robin and with throw Cross posted 85,100,83 but it paled into insignificance in comparison to Filer´s 125,123 and Harvey´s 140 and 59 out (S19,D20). Cross levelled on 72 (S7,25,D20). Some great all round scores from the four participants left Simpson on 106. A T20 followed by S10 left D18 for the opportunity of a great finish. Unfortunately it was wired leaving Cross the honours on D9, for a 2-1 victory and shared honours between the three pairs, leaving the committee to determine who goes through. With four great players left in the singles the last event in the evening, the packed audience were keen to know who was playing who. Jay Sharp had the honour of doing the draw, which concluded with Walker playing Abrams and Cross v. Linton. Both semis were very good, but the first was a real humdinger. Walker won the bull and posted 90,85 and a 140. Abrams response was dire, a lone 81. Walker used two darts for T10,D18 for an early lead. Just a ton from Walker in the second as Abrams moved up a gear with 100,95 and 121 plus D18 for one apiece. The Kat looked really good with 100,100,140 in the third, but his opponent hit his own 140 and a great 116 out (T20,S20,D18). Tons were traded in the next plus a 140 from Abrams, who then made it all square on D4. Walker won the bull in the decider and started with a 180, then 95 and 80. The response was emphatic, 100,140,140 and a 66 out (S6,S20,D20) for 3-2 to the Meerkat and a wry smile from an excellent opponent. The 17 tons or more accumulated in the first semi wasn’t quite matched in the second, but an 11 tons total and a similar score line proved just as enjoyable. A 125 and 100 in the first with the throw for Cross, was bettered by 2x140 and D2 from Linton who made it 2-0 after 125,100 and D20. Just one ton in the third from Cross and a D8 reduced Linton´s advantage. It was even stevens in the fourth until requiring 68, Cross hit T20,D4 to level and a fifth leg decider. Linton won the bull and commenced with a ton. Cross´s response was 2x100 and first chance at a double. Requiring 40 points to complete his 501, the Hunk slotted home D20 for a place in the final against the Meerkat´s Abrams. Some great all round darts in each category. I am looking forward to all this week´s finals on Thursday at Breakaways, starting with a team cup final between Busters and the Hub Meerkats at 8 p.m. The evening was concluded with a 20 prize raffle supported by Euronics and the Treasure Chest (Villamartin), after a magnificent buffet prepared by Sue and Pam. Presentation of prizes follows this week´s finals and all recipients are requested to attend, including all semi finalists. All playing finalists are asked to register at 7.45 p.m. regardless of playing time. On a sad note I have to inform the league of the recent passing of Martin Sears after a long illness. Martin was a regular down at Hattons bar and turned out for the Hunks on Thursday evenings until his illness prevented the pleasure. Our thoughts are with wife Carol, family and numerous close friends. Listen to darts chit chat with Kevin Reardon and Paul Durrant on Exite Radio 89.2 and 93.1FM on Saturday afternoons between 3 and 4 p.m. Paul Durrant, League Chairman

What a funny game bowls is. On Wednesdays in the Valencian league we have lost all of our three games to date and are lying bottom of the league. In the Friday SABA league we have won all of our four games and currently lie top of the league! Lets hope we can reverse our results on a Wednesday but keep our form on Fridays. Last Valencian game was at home against Greenlands and while both our singles players, Ann Allen 21 – 13 and Alan Pugh 21 – 10, did us proud the other three disciplines all lost resulting in a 81 to 94 shot defeat and gaining only four points. Fridays game saw us pitted against Quesada at home. We won the game by 108 shots to 98 with a points tally of 10. Our winning rinks were Bill Stanaway, Bryan Eatough and Brian Guppy 18 – 12,Fred Semper, Tony Burchall and Terry Hucknall 26 – 16,Linda Hier, Roy Collins and Alan Pugh 23 – 11 and John Bailey, Mike Kirby and Barry Evans 22 – 15.We also turned out a friendly game comprising Garry Walker, Peter Davis,John Simpson, Roy Thompson and two Quesada players. I have no idea who won but thanks to them for turning out and I am sure they enjoyed it
By StJohn Broadhurst Two weeks matches to report this week and then we have a two week break for the Spanish Nationals. On Wednesday, 30 April the Clarets played hosts to Montemar Lords. A disappointing day for the Clarets with a win in only one discipline, leaving us with only two points. The winning rink was the Ladies singles: Karen Kirk 21-8. Overall shots, Clarets 68 (2pts) Lords 101 (10pts). Friday, 2 May saw the Badgers travel to Quesada to do battle with the Lancasters and a very one sided battle it was with the Lancasters winning on all six rinks. Nothing more to be said except that three of the rinks were lost on the last end. Overall shots, Badgers 76 (0pts) Lancasters 126 (14pts). We did, however, enjoy the fish and chips afterwards. The final match to report on was a home game on Wednesday, 7 May for the Clarets against San Luis Whites and a reversal of fortune from the previous week saw the Clarets winning on three rinks as well as the long game. The winning rinks were: Men’s singles: StJohn Broadhurst 21-12. Trips: Jo Wright, Brian Kirk, John Wright 23-12. Rinks: Sandra McIlroy, Joel Fernandez, Ben Noke, Dot Davies 17-10. Overall shots Clarets 92 (8pts) Whites 72 (4pts). And finally good luck to all those taking part in the Spanish Nationals over the next two weeks. www.countrybowlsclub.com

LA SIESTA BOWLS CLUB By Norman Adcroft VCL Green League 7th May This week we continued with another brilliant win away to Monte Mar playing on their fine new green and came away with our third 10-2 win in as many weeks. Our winners were, Alan Barton 21-1, Pat Harman 21-13, Joy Gardiner, Sue Jordan, Brian Fraser 20-14 Bill Jordan, Iris Kadwell, Brian Gardiner, Dave Eccles 20-17. Well done everyone. SABA Hurricane and Harrier Division The Wasps played a morning home game against our near neighbours the San Luis Hercules, and happily for us our good form of the opening week’s returned with a fine 137-85 shots and 12-2 points win. Our winners were Jean and Norman Murphy with Dave Livesey 17-15, Ann and Robert Heath with Pat Harman 26-14, Jeannie Clements, Dave Eccles with Colin Lloyd, 28-9, Jo Elkin, Brian Gardiner, with Jean Cooper, 26-10, Barbara Cooper with Pat and Vic Moore 24-18. The Hornets 2nd May did well to take 6 points in an away game against the Emerald Isle Vulcans. Winning rinks were Derek Souter, Irene Laverick, Les Rawson 24-13, Penny Porter, George Seaman, John Taylor 17-13, Dawn Taylor, Terry Baylis, Dave Laverick who reversed last week's result and won by one shot 19-18. Sadly the overall shot difference did not reflect our three winning rinks at 100 to123. The Hornets 9th May played a morning away .game at Vistabella and lost the match 6-8. We took three rinks thanks to Penny Porter, Sheila Millward, John Taylor 19-14, Pat Baylis, Malcolm Drew, Ron Sheldon 23-16 and Dawn Taylor, Terry Baylis, Dave Laverick 22-13. The shots decided the issue and at 96-121 there was no doubt that Vistabella deserved the two points. Well done Hornets we are getting nearer! Chicken and Egg Winners 7th May. Following our second Saturday morning roll up won by Jeff Austin and which was once again well attended we continued our up and down league form. We travelled to San Luis for this week’s VCL game and although most of the games were very close unfortunately they all went to San Luis to give them a 12 points to nil win by 107 shots to 80. On Friday we improved a little bit as the Greeners recorded an 8 points to 6 win by 121 shots to 96. Leading the way were Sheila and Mike Cox with Allan Sinclair, Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Pat Rafferty and Jenny Chaplin, Brian Pointon and Dave Chaplin. The Fairways made the short trip to San Miguel for the second week running and after last week’s disappointing result although we didn’t win we did produce a fighting performance losing by 8 points to 6 and 84 shots to 78 we did however win 3 of the 6 rinks and only lost the other 3 by

very small margins. Our 3 winning rinks were Martin Foulcer, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee, Mo Foulcer, Neil Burrows and Mac Maclean and Olwyn Ratcliffe, Arthur Brown and Brian Dunn. After being told off last week for failing to mention that our friendly team of Tony French, Les Barber and Ann Marie Stevenson, produced a fighting draw (sorry Ann Marie) our friendly team this week went even further with a 22 shots to 13 win so well done to Sandra Burrows, Bill Corbishley and Gerry Gough. We now have a couple of weeks break from league matches while the Spanish Nationals are on but remember everyone, we have a friendly game between the Fairways and the Greeners followed by a lunch next Thursday. Let’s have as many players as possible. Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB REPORT Following the excitement of last weekend's International, our teams have settled back into the normal routine, before the Spanish Nationals take place, with Quesada being one of the hosts. Our SABA Blenheims team is still producing great results with an 11-3 win away to Emerald Isle Victors. A good result for both of our Valencian Championship League squads, with the Lions taking a 10-2
win away to Greenlands Jasmines and the Tigers winning 10-2 at home to a strong team from Monte Mar. On Thursday our Nationals players were in action against the Squad from Tenerife, which has now become an annual event. We fielded two squads of 12 players against the Tenerife 12 and what a game of bowls ensued. Quesada were only 4 shots ahead after the morning session, and with

QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY
By Mike Chapman That was the cry following the final game of the Vega Baja Premier Golf League played at El Valle on 2 May 2014 as Las Ramblas Golf Society secured the Premier League Championship for the first time in its history. The photograph shows the team accepting the trophy from the League Secretary Ivie Davies having won three of the four matches and taking the bonus points to win the match by 12 points to 3 against Paddy's Point Golf Society. This gave the team the title by 3 pts from runners up La Manga (North). The winning pairs on the day at the testing El Valle Course which was in excellent condition were Tom Hardie and Bryan Neal, Terry Field and Barbara Hitchins and remaining unbeaten throughout the whole season husband and wife team John and Carole Wheeler. Congratulations to all those at the Club who contributed to this magnificent achievement in particular Club Captain Mick Brentnall who will no doubt be reminding previous Captains of his leadership skills for many years to come. On Monday it was back to Las Ramblas where we played a Waltzer with 1 score counting on the first hole, 2 on the second and 3 on the third and so on throughout the round. This turned out to be a very
close affair with two teams having to be separated on count back both scoring 81 pts. The winners were Lindsay Forbes, Bryan Neal, Roger Tunstall and 'Albert'. The unlucky runners up were Terry Field, Dave Pulling, Ron Phipps and Olga Douglas. Wednesday saw us playing our usual Stableford competition in perfect conditions and there were some good scores particularly in Category One with one player beating par and two others on level par. The results for the day were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Bryan Neal 37 pts 2nd Olga Douglas 36 pts (c/b) 3rd Phil Herrington 36 pts Cat 2. 1st Rod Doel 35 pts 2nd Carole Wheeler 33 pts (c/b) 3rd Mike Chapman 33 pts There were six 2's in the 2's Club scored by Mike Frankish, Phil Herrington, Bryan Neal, Olga Douglas, John Wheeler and guest Terry Cullin. On Friday there were four more games played in the Singles Knockout Match play competition and the winners going through to the next round are Olga Douglas, John Wheeler, Tom Hardie and Mike Chapman. The remaining members played a Medalford and the winner with a score of 19 was Joe (Fred) Rothery with Joyce McClusky in second with 21. In third place winning the guest prize was Tracy Granzel with a score of 23.

FRIENDLY BAR GOLF SOCIETY Last Wednesday there was another very good turn-out for the society’s game at what is arguably the best golf course on the southern Costa Blanca, Las Colinas. The course and greens were in excellent condition and the weather was perfect for a good game of golf. The competition was an individual stableford with two divisions. In the gold division the winner was our Treasurer, Rod Day who returned a score of 34 points. In second place was the society’s lowest handicapper David McSweeney with 30 points. He pipped third placed Stormin Norman Lewis on C/B. Norman had a good round and it would have been a very good round had half a dozen putts gone in instead of finishing inches from the cup. In the Silver Division the winner was steady golfer Terry Smith who came in with 33 points followed by Glenys Thomas with 29 points pipping young Trevor Hobbs on C/B. The winner of the “Roy” for the most shots played was Paul Flanagan. Nearest the Pin winners were David McSweeney, Roy Westlake, Pam Martin and Garry Haisman. A 2’s competition was introduced recently and the first winner was smoking Tony Patterson who chipped in from the greenside bunker on the tricky Par 3 14th. In the annual singles knock-out competition Tony White beat Roy Kavanagh and Rod Day beat Trevor Hobbs to advance to the next round. The presentations were made after the game at the Quesada Country Club with a tasty hot and cold buffet being provided by Dave & Anita. The game was kindly sponsored jointly by Roy Kavanagh and Dave & Anita of the Quesada Country Club. The next game is the first of the society’s “Away Days” at Hacienda Del Alamo which promises to be a great day out. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.
55 players took part in our Team Game today which was a Texas Scramble competition at our home course of La Marquesa on Thursday 7 May. Each player must take at least 4 drives, with 2 players allowed to have 5. This gets a bit knee trembling towards the end unless the captain is able to keep the drives balanced as the team goes round the course. Weather conditions continue to be pleasant and good scores resulted. The Captain announced that for the remainder of the season, the bulk of money from the football will be paid out in prizes, resulting in 9 prizes today. The Turner family managed to clean up this week, with 3 footballs between them, as well as Ian in the prizes today and Morag on Tuesday, well done. The results were as follows 1st The Team of: Ian Pegg, John Connolly, Terry Sayers & Jan Shorley 61.8 nett. 2nd The Team of: David Gregson, Ian Turner, Marilyn Eckersall & June Caithness 62.7 nett. 3rd The Team of : Alan Venables, Harry Armstrong,

22 golfers were in attendance on our latest day out, we played at Alenda Golf which proved once again a pleasure as the course was in top class condition and a credit to the grounds men and management. LOO PY LO PEZ SOURS TORRY FAREW ELL GIG FC TORREVIEJA.........1 CD CASTELLON............4 Senor Lopez Herrero is well known to Torry fans. The card happy referee from Alicante has previous for his dogmatic, egotistical style of officiating, and true to form, was at it again. Although Castellon were the better side, their task was made so much easier, playing against a team who had to watch their every move, for fear of expulsion. This was the last game of the season, and everything was set up for a big thank you from the players to the fans, but Lopez had other ideas. After only 19 mins, Valdeolivas was judged to have fouled Omar inside the penalty area. A penalty was probably justified, but a booking for the culprit seemed harsh. No soon as the yellow card had been shown, a red one was brandished (presumably for verbal abuse), which triggered off unsavoury scenes, resulting in team mate Martin physically hauling Valeolivas off the pitch, otherwise Lopez would have probably been beaten to pulp! This was Valdeolivas 4th sending off (once as a used sub on the bench) of the season, rendering him a liability, surely placing a huge question mark over his future involvement at the club. Hugo easily converted the resultant spot kick past Samuel, whose awful kicking was partly to blame for the incident in the first place. Making his home debut (he retained his place despite conceding 3 the previous week, as Carrion was injured), Samuel was showing early signs of not being up to the job, and unfortunately he went on to have a complete mare!! Torry should have equalised on 27 mins, but the normally reliable Carrasco (my player of the season), stumbled with just the keeper to beat. Nestor fired just over, with Samuel nowhere to be seen, before Carrasco's diving header just missed the target. Despite numerical disadvantage, Torry were showing spirited attacking intentions, as both Martin and Carrasco came close to finding the net. But on 40 mins, the dangerous Omar blasted a 20 yard free kick around the wall and into the net, with Samuel rooted to the spot. As the half time whistle blew, Lopez inexplicably booked Castellon front man Hugo (dissent maybe?), then even more bizarrely sent him off. Young Samuel pulled off a good near post save from Omar, as

CARPRUS ANGLING NEWS Last week 14 members travelled to Cataluña to fish the River Ebro. Although there were no monsters caught, Ray Donovan managed to net a Carp of almost 30lbs and our lady angler Ann Fowles caught 3 Cat fish of differing weights. Most anglers managed to catch something during their stay. This weeks match, on May 8th, was our first visit of the year to Blanca in Murcia. This venue has a reputation for not fishing well. First on the day was Pete Kerr with 3.96kg, in

Castellon started the new half determinedly. If Torry thought their afternoon was bad, it was about to get a lot worse, as Lopez showed Burguillas a 2nd yellow card for a totally innocuous challenge. Poor Burguillas was shell shocked, for neither of his bookings had warranted disciplinary measures - the guy is a fair, hard working utility player, who hasn't got an ounce of malice in him. Down to 9 men, Torry battled hard. Micro reduced the deficit on 66 mins, when he shot home following a Carrasco free kick which rebounded from the wall. Samuel once again caused palpitations when he fumbled a routine catch, gathering it at 2nd time of asking as it rebounded from the post. On 75 mins, Castellon had a 'goal' ruled out for offside, but 2 minutes later they notched up their 3rd. It fell to their captain Guille, who rifled his acute angled shot into the net, with Samuel this time being blameless. Not having centre stage for 20 minutes, Loopy Lopez then decided to send Torry's kit man to the stand, for presumably having the audacity to question his god like qualities!! Omar was left with the final say, as his fierce 30 yard free kick sailed over the head of the diminutive Samuel, who was left to pick the ball from the back of the net for the 7th time in 2 games. In addition to the sending offs, our super star arbitro booked Torry's Vicente (who had previously been presented with Torry Army player of the season trophy), Dani Meseguer, Martin and Micro, plus Charli and Nestor from the visiting side.
second place was Derek King with 2.40kilos, third was Dave Hoare with 2.38kg and in fourth place Doug Hornblow with 3.60kg. All caught on the feeder. Next weeks match should have been held in Murcia Town Centre, but due to the situation in the river this match has been cancelled and re- scheduled to Nancys. Pegs at 8.00, fishing from 9.00 till 3.00. The next Quiz night is on Tuesday May 13th, commencing at 7.30pm. Cost of entry is 1€
per person, and teams of 6 or less can take part. Anyone is welcome to come along. The next meeting is on Sunday May 18th with the Committee meeting at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00. The Clubs home is the Bar El Alto La Dolores, which is situated just off the N332 between Guardamar and La Mata, near the Repsol garage. CLARKES BAR GS This week we made our way to Vistabella to play the routine stableford competition on a warm sunny morning. We found the course to be in good condition on the whole with the exception that the greens were, disappointingly, still poor and very bumpy following the necessary hollow tining. However this did not seem to detract from the scoring of some of our members and the rest still enjoyed the golf anyway. The results on the day were: NTP on hole 4 was Michael Jackson Nearest the pin on hole 8 was John Porter Nearest the par 4 16th in 2 was Dave Somerville Longest Drive on hole 18 was Martin Cunningham Winner with 37 points was Colin (Topper) Tomlinson Runner Up (again) with 34 points was John Winkley. Next week we are at La Serena meet at the bar at 08:00.

Tuesday Night Trios Ten Pin The last night saw attention concentrated on the top of the league, where Split Happens needed 2 points to take the title. Facing an in form The Dreamers team, SH knew they would have to bowl well and, with Kjell Monsen leading with a 259 scratch game, they comfortably picked up the 2 points needed, to secure the title. SH took the game 8-0 but, Kjell managed to “concentrate” to amass a 644 scratch series and so consolidate the mens' high average with 192 per game. Shane Winfield of Cornish Pride hadn't liked the 'ribbing' he took last week, after Sue W beat him 'easily' and, with a 238 scratch game and 671 handicap series, firmly put his wife “back in her place”. His total was not enough to prevent Lucky Strike drawing 4 – 4, with Sue Duke of LS increasing her individual scratch high game to 198. Team Finland, lying second in the league, knew they needed 4 points to keep their position and, when they took the first game, all was going well. However, Crazy Pinz had other ideas and, with Ivar Henriksen bowling his highest scr and h/c series of 558 and 648 respectively, shocked TF and took the game 6 – 2. This meant that, if Hall y Day could beat Bar Mosquitos 8 – 0 and bowl well, they would snatch second place. With Lesley Day bowling a superb 653 scr and 701 h/c series, ably backed up by Martti Timonens 648 and Tony Rays 622 h/c series, they took the team high h/c series for the season with 1971 and, overhauled TF by 140 pins, to grab second place. Los lobos enjoyed a 4 – 4 drawn game with Los Bandidos. Maurice Allen had his 'bit' for company and, relaxed with a steady 543 series. Although Juans' Warriors knew their fate, they still wanted as many points as possible and, with captain Jamie Brian rolling a solid 561, they shared the spoils with Caballo Negro, 4 – 4. Splash set out on lanes 19 and 20, determined to put Hall y Day under pressure for a top three finish but, The Mixers were in no mood to roll over. Splash couldn't get going in the first game and, TM took the game by 10 pins. Even with Juanjo Carral bowling a 234 scr second game, a 6 – 2 points win wasn't enough to move Splash into the top three. Presentation night will be held at The Splash Bar and Restaurant Torrevieja, on Saturday 17th May.
