TIME TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND

T

his week sees another landmark in Europe´s history, as the continent embarks on the next phase of election to choose the 751 members of the European parliament who will represent the people of the member states for the next five years. Taking place between the 22nd and the 25th of May, the actual day of voting is dictated by the laws of each member state. It is widely known that the UK generally goes to the polling booths on a Thursday, whereas the standard in Spain is Sunday, for example, which is why the elections are held over a period of days. The results from all 28 states of Europe will be announced on the evening of Sunday the 25th. The number of elected parliament members has been reduced to 751, after increasing to 766 when Croatia

joined the EU in 2013. According to the official data, the MEPs represent over 500 million citizens in 28 member states, whereas the seats are allocated on the basis of “degressive proportionality”, meaning countries with larger populations have more seats than smaller ones but the latter have more seats than strict proportionality would imply. As a local party who blatantly profess a sole interest in the Orihuela Costa, the local C.L.A.R.O. political group will not be standing in the European elections, but the group, under the lead of Bob Houliston, has been instrumental in assisting many confused ex-pat voters through the process and procedures of voting, as well as emphasizing the importance. In a statement, Bob Houliston shows how the European Parliament has been of huge importance to the people served at a local level, explaining how on two occasions recently the European Parliament has supported Petitions presented by Continued on Page 2

C.L.A.R.O. First in 2007, in a campaign to get proper street names and house numbers on the Orihuela Costa, then again in another major campaign, that which is still being fought with the backing of Europe, the campaign to “Save Cala Mosca”. With the wave of publicity which has seen the run up to these elections, it might be easy to believe that there are only perhaps one or two political groups standing for election in Spain, but this opinion could not be further from the truth. Spain will hold a total of 54 seats in the European Parliament, the UK having 73 incidentally, and of the political groups standing, in the Valencia region there are a total of 41 different groups looking to represent the country. It is no small task to be eligible to represent a country in Europe though, so all of these groups are equally as valid in their intentions. PACMA, a group dedicated to animal rights and animal welfare are standing for election this year, and as they explained, they entered the European forum with over 40,000 signatures supporting their representation, more than double the minimum required by the Electoral Act. The Pirate Confederation is a similar group who say that they stand for openness, transparency, citizen participation and staunch defense of fundamental rights. The first time they have stood for Europe, their achievement even seemed to surprise them. The inclusion of a group supporting feminism might seem unusual in an election being held in 2014, but with the dominance of men in politics, and the concerns over subjects like abortion laws and equality, it is perhaps more necessary than ever that the rights of women are represented, as it is the rights of all citizens of the continent. There is no doubt that the PP and PSOE are the political muscle, not only in national terms, but also in the build up to these elections, but, much like the UK, they too are facing an ever increasing threat from the outside. The two biggest risks that the political “big-boys” face at the moment are the Izquierda Unida (IU) and the Unión Progreso y Democracia (UPyD). Although polls are often only an indication of the outcome, recent opinions have seem a relatively similar distance between the PP and PSOE at the top, bordering at just over and just under 30% respectively, but as relatively new groups, the IU seem to be hovering at around 10%, and the UPyD at around 7%. Bearing in mind the number of groups competing, this is a significant development, considering that all other parties combined are only making up around 15% of the

Monday, 19th May, 2014 general opinion. Apart from the obvious moral warmth that the MEP´s will gain from representing their electorate, there is no doubt that they will also gain personally for their newly elected roles. For those about to be flung into the limelight representing Spain, the budget set for their salary is 8,020.53 euro per month. For comparison, the President of the Government of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, receives a basic pre-tax salary of 6,515.42 euro, the Ministers receive 5,748.49. Taking into account our MEP´s pay tax, their salary does come down to just 6,250.37 euro per month, but doesn´t include the additional allowance for travel and food when attending the meetings in Strasbourg and Brussels, which is set at a maximum of 304 euro per day. They are at risk of losing that allowance if they fail to attend a required number of meeting though. According to the European Parliament, the salary of MEP´s is set at 38.5% of the basic salary of a judge of the Court of Justice of the European Communities. There is also money to be made at a local level too. As part of the electoral process, town halls have to provide and monitor polling stations and auditors under the Electoral Act. This was done in Orihuela during an extraordinary plenary meeting in April, attended by political representatives of the government and opposition. As they can all claim their daily expenses for attending that meeting, at 200 euro per person, the ten minute meeting where computers did the selection process is a nice little earner for those at a local level too, Orihuela here used as an example of what would have occurred across the country. Now, as those who registered have their voting cards at the ready, indicating the address of the polling station and hours you are requested to attend, you must remember to take your official identity documents with you and them be prepared to do your bit to choose who may represent you in Europe. If you want more information about all political groups and the process of voting, the official website is available in a variety of languages, at ..... www.elections2014.eu. For more local based information, Bob Houliston will be joining Mark Nolan on Exite Radio on Monday morning in the final days before the elections. You can listen to that chat just after 10:00 on 93.1 fm, or via the website, www.exiteradio.com.

SUSPECTED BRITISH PAEDOPHILE ARRESTED Officers from the Spanish National Police have arrested a 71 year old British fugitive in the Valencia town of L'Olleria, wanted in connection with sexual offences against children alleged to have taken place between 1976 and 1980. The man is the subject of a European arrest warrant issued in the UK, in which the man is wanted for questioning in relation to offences which state that he sexually abused his two stepchildren, aged 8 and 11 at the time, as well as being accused of inflicting violence onto the children to ensure their silence. The report states that the man took advantage of the children at night, when their mother was working, with the two children claiming that the abuse of the

SPAIN HAS THIRTY FOUR MORE BLU E FLAGS THAN LAST YEAR Playa de Los Naufragos is one of 12 beaches in Torrevieja and on the Orihuela Costa to receive the prestigious Blue Flag Award

n a press conference on Wednesday, it was revealed that Spain will be flying the Blue Flag of quality on a total of 573 beaches and 108 marinas this year, an increase of 34 over last year. Of those new flags gained, 23 of them relate to beaches, the remaining 11 to marinas. The overall result meaning that one in five beaches of the coast of Spain are of the highest quality to be awarded the prestigious distinction. The largest increase has been seen in the Balearic Islands, where an additional 25 beaches have now received the award, making their total 85, and the region of Murcia received an additional 7 flags, making 33 beaches, after losing some of their quality standards last year. As Spain now has 573 beaches with a Blue Flag, the country ranks way ahead of the nearest rivals for quality, with Greece having 407, Turkey has 197, France has 379 and Portugal has 298. As for marinas, Spain now ranks number one for the first time, with 108 marinas flying the flag, compared to 103 in Germany, 101 in the

I

Netherlands, 90 in France and 62 in Italy. In overall figures, Spain´s 681 is way ahead of the second placed France with 469, Turkey has 419, Greece has 417 and Italy has 333. The five beaches in Torrevieja which have achieved the Blue Flag standard for this year are El Cura, Los Náufragos, Cala Piteras, Los Locos and La Mata (Sur), plus the two marinas at R.C.N. Torrevieja and Marina Internacional. As for Orihuela, their seven Blue Flag beaches are at Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia Cala Cerrada, Cala Capitán, Cabo Roig, Aguamarina and Barranco Rubio, plus two more at the Marina Cabo Roig and C. N. Dehesa de Campoamor. The Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Borrego, says that the results show how Spain is confirmed as a holiday destination that puts the country on the “road to excellence”. Continuing that the “economic, social and environmental sustainability is essential to make this more productive, competitive and profitable”.

YOU MAY NOT WANT TO KNOW WHAT’S LURKING IN THE CORNER number of residents of the Montequinto area of the Seville town of Dos Hermanas are becoming increasingly concerned over warnings of a nonnative spider, with a “very poisonous” bite, that can cause necrosis of the skin and adipose tissue. Local environmentalist, Pilar Muñoz, explained that the spider is originally from the U.S., although it has adapted to the

A

environment and “is self endemic”, and whereas the spider is not considered dangerous in its native land, there has been “several” cases in Spain of bites having caused “more serious” conditions, including skin necrosis. Many of those bitten by the spider, which is said to lurk in the dark shadows such as corners and dark crevasses, have had to undergo surgical procedures such as skin grafts. In case you get close enough to want to inspect one of the potential spiders, it is said to be brown in colour, with a stain that resembles a violin on its head. They have three eyes above this spot and a fat

abdomen, but if you are that close you might not want to insult its body image and maybe describe it a “big boned”. The legs are of equal length and quite hairy. The spider suffers from photophobia, an aversion to light, which is why it prefers the darker places, and those with poor ventilation, such as garages, store rooms, door frames and tables. It is also where the name of “recluse spider” comes from. They are also known to nest in the ventilation vents in bathrooms. One final piece of reassurance given by the environmentalist is that the spider is unlikely to be present in the gardens or grounds, assuring everybody that the likelihood is that they are “in our homes”.

VALENCIA LOCAL POLICE IN FEAR OF MOSQ UITO ATTACK A union representing local police officers across Valencia has denounced what they believe is an unacceptable situation which is leading to countless officers being unduly and unfairly attacked whilst on duty. The union states that numerous officers have raised the matter as being of grave concern, as the bright yellow markings of their uniforms appears to attract more than their fair share of mosquitoes. In order to deal with the problem, the union is calling for the head of security to replace the uniforms with a plain dark blue version, as has been done in some other areas, in order to reduce their attractiveness to the female admirers of the insect world, craving their blood. The union also claim that the change in uniform

will also improve the quality of services provided to the community, and avoid the police being confused with other municipal workers, such as cleaners. A further improvement would be that the cost of the uniforms would be cheaper. A number of officers held a recent protest over budget cuts, as many of their vehicles are more than 30 years old, as are some of their weapons, and so they took to the streets in protest with many of them wearing nothing but their underwear and lingerie.

AGRICULTURAL BURNING BANNED FROM THIS WEEK The Ministry of the Interior has announced a stricter and extended period for the restrictions on agricultural burning, in order to better protect against the risk of forest fires.

Agricultural fires will now be banned from the 15th of May until the 30th of September, rather than beginning in July as the law dictates. During this period the burning of crops or agricultural or forestry residues, reeds and bushes, forestry and other fire related activities which are normal to running of farms and farmlands, and will have a 500 metre perimeter restricted area around the zones. Statistically, around 80% of all forest fires each year in Valencia are as a direct result of humans, either deliberately or through negligence. By restricting the risk of these activities, it is hoped that it will also reduce the risk of potentially devastating and deadly fires taking hold.

LEADER GUARDAMAR MONITORING RUBBISH IN REAL TIME ADVERTISING HOTLINE

Thanks to the new technology that makes information more readily available in our hands, the network that brings electronic data to our mobile phones and tablets is also being developed with a practical use, such as an ingenious system implemented in Guardamar. The town hall of Guardamar are now able to monitor all 600 of their municipal waste bins, in real time, to check if they have been emptied, or if there are any other issues that need resolving. Not unlike the Linea Verde application being used in Orihuela and other municipalities where the onus is on the public to report faults, the difference with this system, according to councilor Javier Cremades, is that this system “allows inspectors to collect data relating to incidents that occur on the street in real time and send it to the central information system that is located in the municipal offices”. Both systems have the added bonus for the municipality in speeding up problem resolution, which in turn is handed down to the residents by means of a speedier and more cost effective

process by using modern technology.

TRIATHLON RETURNS TO LA GLEA This weekend saw the second Orihuela Triathlon on the for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, and the Councillor for Sports, Luis coastal area, with over 200 participants from across Spain taking to swimming, running and cycling their way through the Orihuela Costa.

All the action was on Sunday at the Dehesa de Campoamor, with Playa la Glea featuring in the water based events. Both the Councillor

Galiano, watched as the athletes swam 750 metres through the sea, supported by two boats, followed by a 20 kilometre bike ride, finishing off with a gruelling 5 kilometre run. Having been traditionally hosted in the Torremendo area, Scheurer explained how last year was the first time that the event came to the Orihuela Costa, and due to the phenomenal success of that race, it returned once more, helping to promote the Orihuela Costa and the beaches to the large number of participants in the race. The town hall provided a wide range of fixtures and facilities for the event, most of which were purchased new last year, and therefore at no cost to this year´s event. Triathlon events are firmly fixed in the sporting schedule of Valencia, in fact only last weekend, local Orihuela team Tragamillas competed in the Copa del Rey, with both male and female teams doing well in the overall standings, only to now participate in this weekend´s activities too. The team will also be participating in the Carrera Popular Solidaria “Por la Vida”, which takes place on the Orihuela Costa on the 1st of June, starting at 10:00 in the morning, preceding an event to raise money for charity, which the triathlon team have pledged to also donate any remaining funds they have to the cause.

STILL NO CONFIRMATION OF CHIRINGUITO CONTRACT The process of securing a contractor to provide beach bars on the Orihuela Costa is still ongoing, although not without possible further complications. Despite the town hall believing that they have resolved all of the outstanding issues, ensuring that the contract is correct, awarded to a suitably audited company and with the provision of receiving the outstanding debts, the company set to take on the work is yet to reply to the formal proposals. As the procedure is time based, this could well lead to a summer without beach bars on the Orihuela Costa, which could also prove welcoming to those businesses near to the beaches which saw an improvement in trade over the Easter period. The fact that Orihuela has been awarded more Blue Flags than might have been expected could well prove testament to the quality and standards being implemented, but the fear that a lack of chiringuitos might cause problems for future years have been dismissed, with the coun-

cillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, confirming that having bars on the beach is not a requirement of the Blue Flag or quality awards.

ORIHUELA COSTA LIFE GUARDS UP FOR TENDER The contract to operate the life saving beach services on the Orihuela Costa is set to be put to public tender, with a value of 325,000 euro.

The requirement to find a replacement company came about after the original contract holder, Ambuibérica SYA, requested that they be released from the contract as the company was facing financial difficulties and undergoing a restructuring process. The company was originally awarded the contract under the management of a previous coastal councillor, Pedro Mancebo. An agreement was reached for the company to provide the services during the Easter period of this year, which was done in line with the contractual requirements, including two life guards on duty during the period of operation, despite allegations to the contrary made by Mancebo and his political groups, but confirmed by the routine checks of the town hall technicians. The company was unable to continue beyond that season. Mancebo had previously criticised the lack of floating access chair for disabled beach goers to use, as some beaches did not have these last summer, despite the contractual requirement. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, admitted that this may well have been the case, but only because it was an erroneous clause in the original contract, as not all of the beaches are accessible to people with mobility problems. That element has now been corrected from the original tender document and the new company must continue to provide these facilities, but only on the beaches which are actually accessible to those who might wish to use them. Now, the contract is set to go to tender to cover the remaining duration of the period of the original term, which will take in the summer of 2014, as well as Easter and summer of 2015.

ADVERTISING HOTLINE 966 73 0057 LEADER COSTAS STILL NUMBER ONE FOR OVERSEAS HOMEBUYERS

By Richard Way, Editor, The Overseas Guides Company The desire amongst British people to own an overseas home, in particular along the Spanish Costas, has surged in 2014, according to statistics from the Overseas Guides Company, who saw a 20 per cent year-on-year hike in enquires about foreign property ownership in the first three months of the year. The Overseas Guides Company, a free resource for overseas property-buyers, attracted 11,590 on-line enquiries, in the form of downloads of its free Buying Guides, during the first quarter (Q1) of 2014, compared to 9,685 in Q1 2013. Encouragingly, the first three months of 2014 were also busier than Q3 2013, historically the busiest period of any year, when 10,518 downloads were recorded. “What was especially notable was Spain being more popular than France, typically the most dominant country for enquiries” said Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of The Overseas Guides Company. “This would indicate a return of confidence in the Spanish market amongst British buyers. The pound’s ongoing strength since the start of 2014 and the UK’s booming housing market and buoyant economy will have contributed to such a bullish first quarter. The unprecedented amount of rain and flooding we suffered in January will also have spurred people on to invest in a bolt-hole somewhere sunny. “We see no signs of this slowing down, especially with the pound at a 16-month high against the euro – £1 was worth just €1.14 for a period back in August, but after steadily climbing it’s hovering around €1.22.” Breaking the figures down further, January recorded the highest level of enquiries during Q1, namely 5,196 compared to 3,310 in February and 3,084 in March. Meanwhile, Spain and Ireland stood out as countries that attracted more enquiries in Q1 2014 than any quarter during 2013, although the generic enquiries with no specified country saw the largest year-on-year jump. The Overseas Guides Company now has a database of more than 77,000 people interested in buying overseas property and/or moving abroad.

FOUR MONTHS IN JAIL FOR SON’S TRUANCY he Alicante Provincial Court has sentenced parents to four months in prison for the truancy of their son, after he failed to attend class for almost two years during the school years 2007-08 when he was just 13 years of age. The child regularly played truant during the 2006-2007 academic year, attending for only five days during 2007-2008. He was subsequently admitted to Alicante’s Juvenile Reception Center on June 6, 2008. A third defendant in the proceedings, was the boy’s football coach with whom he lived for almost a year and who, it was said, also neglected to send him to school, whilst he was in his care. He too was sentenced to the same term as the parents. The judge said he said he was issuing a custodial sentence to both parents and the guardian for a crime of failing to fullfil their parental obligations together with the breach of their statutory duties of care to the child.

TORREVIEJA MAYOR FINALLY ACCEPTS OPPOSI TION CALLS FOR PUBLIC TOILETS

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has announced in a radio interview this week that the town hall will install public toilets in key areas of the city´s promenade. The councillor has said that the administration is in the process of compiling a tender document for the provision of the facility, which should be available shortly. This is seen as good news all round, not only for the people who visit the beaches who have asked for toilets for some time, as the few which are provided are sparsely situated, but also for the many bus passengers and staff who have also complained that there were no toilets installed at the newly renovated bus station near the Eras de la Sal. Moreover, the move is also seen as a positive one by the opposition PSOE group, but their praise is perhaps due to the fact that is was them who had already requested and proposed the installation of public toilets in April of 2013, although at that time the town hall ignored the request. The summer of 2014 may mean that Torrevieja has better facilities than ever before, even if it has taken over a year for the Mayor to accept that the propos-

al from an opposition group may well have been a favourable one, and although no more or less valid today, it is the fact that the facilities will eventually have been provided that is perhaps more important.

MURCIA TAXIS THREATEN LEGAL ACTION OVER AIRPORT RESTRICTIONS

A

s the team responsible for managing Alicante-Elche Airport try to appease their own taxi drivers by clamping down on both illegal pirate drivers and legal taxi drivers from outside their area, they may now face a legal battle through the courts for violating rules on free competition. A control system was set up at Alicante-Elche Airport, with two specific functions, firstly to catch out and take action against private car owners who take money doing “airport runs” for which they have no liability insurance and take away from the livelihoods of those who are legally registered. The second element was to restrict legal and licensed taxis from outside the Elche area to a maximum number of trips per month, thus reducing the number of times a taxi from a different municipalities licensing jurisdiction can operate. This of the campaign may now lead to a legal battle, as the Chamber of Commerce in Murcia has taken up the battle on behalf of that region´s taxi drivers, claiming that the new rule violates the laws of free competition. The Chamber of Commerce of Murcia has therefore announced their absolute rejection of the controls

implemented by the Mayor of Elche, Mercedes Alonso, and has announced that they “will not hesitate to resort to the administrative jurisdiction in the event that the contested decision is confirmed”. A previous case in which Elche attempted to enforce rules on taxis from outside their area faced a Superior Court ruling in Valencia in 2003, during which the courts ruled in favour of the Chamber of Commerce, as their insistence in drivers having additional documentation violated the rules referred to in this case, that of the nationally recognised requirement to simply have booked the service in advance.

HIGHER SPEED TRAINS TO MADRID Railway infrastructure company, ADIF, have embarked on the necessary documentation to allow high speed trains between Alicante and Albacete to travel at up to 300 kilometres per hour. It is expected that the approval will be reached soon, which will reduce the journey time between Madrid and Alicante to just 2 hours and 5 minutes, shaving an extra 15 minutes of the current journey time. Although relatively safe in comparison to other countries, the rail network of Spain has been dealt a number of worrying blows in recent years, firstly by the devastating crash in Santiago de Compostela, for which senior management are now facing the possibility of criminal charges, to more recent reports of financial corruption in awarding contracts.

The two people on board suffered minor cuts and bruises and the scene was attended by both the local police and Guardia Civil, but fire fighters were not required due to the relative success of the landing.

HYDROCHLORIC ACID LEAK CLOSES AP7 A leak from a tanker carrying 8,000 ltrs of hydrochloric acid forced the closure of the AP7 in Benicarlo on Monday after the vehicle parked up in a service station. The incident occurred just after 6.30 pm when the tanker pulled into the service area to refuel. The motorway was immediately closed by officers from the Provincial Fire Service and the Civil Guard Traffico. Three fire crews were called to the incident, one of which was a Chemical Risk Unit, which proceeded to seal the leak. Subsequently, the tanker company sent a replacement vehicle into which the remaining acid was transferred. Firefighters contained the acid that had spilled onto the road ensuring that it did not spread into adjacent drains. The area was thoroughly cleaned and the 50 or so litres of spilled acid neutralized. The service area and adjacent roads were re opened at approximately 10.15 pm.

FINAL WEEK OF LES MISERABLES CANCELLED The producers of the stage musical Les Miserables, currently showing at the Teatro Principal in Alicante, have cancelled the last week of the show for reasons which they have not specified. The shows scheduled between the 27th of May and the 1st of June are cancelled, with ticket holders for the dates able to request a refund at the theatre box office, or choose an alternative date before the now final day of the 26th of May. With tickets priced at between 40 and 99 euro, the show was expected to be a huge success, as it is the first time it has come to Alicante, but the suggestion that alternative dates are freely available may well be indicative of less than favourable sales. The theatre reported that they “deeply” regret any inconvenience caused to audience members who may have already purchased tickets for the last week.

This project, conducted in collaboration with the Heritage Service of the Region of Murcia, has resulted in one person facing criminal charges for the alleged crime of misappropriation, after an investigation was launched following information provided by various concerned citizens who thought the artefacts were of historic value. The investigation led officers to a waste disposal firm, where they discovered the items and various others which were being sold, without relevant documentation to confirm ownership. The assistance of historians was then used to ascertain the age of these pieces, thus finally concluding that the person who had them had no right to offer them for sale. The guns and the artefacts were deposited in the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena to keep them safe and prevent spoilage while ownership is determined.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The Englishman, the Irishman and the Scotsman he experiences that come with being an expat mean that, very quickly, we are put in a position when we learn more about ourselves. Characteristics that we learn to associate with those from other nations are usually quickly dispelled and, hopefully, we begin to learn more about people of other faiths, cultures and those who speak a different language. It is very easy to fall into the trap of national stereotypes, such as Germans being efficient and hardworking, the Spanish having a mañana attitude to life, the Italians being lazy and too fond of pasta, never to trust a Dutch businessman, and the French who are great lovers, dress nicely, but are just so unreliable. Some elements of national characteristics may relate to some people, but it is wrong to typecast a whole nation with the same attributes. Yet, as we are currently witnessing with some of the jingoistic debates about immigration in the UK, and the current popularity of right wing political parties, such prejudices are alive and well. As with so many expats moving to Spain, we initially looked for British people for support to help us with building, electrical, plumbing and legal work. However, we quickly learned that in many cases it was our own countrymen that were the most likely to rip off newcomers. My work as a newspaper reporter brought me in close contact with many Brits who had been conned by fellow Brits, and I learned very quickly that there was no love lost between fellow expats when it came to earning a fast euro. Of course, this is a wide generalisation, because there were also many who would go out of their way to help

T

fellow expats. However, most expats learn quickly that it is not the nationality of your neighbours that is important; it is how they treat you. Our first experience was with an English electrician who arrived at our new home to install lighting. He arrived, endlessly chewing gum, with no ladder or even a screwdriver, which we had to borrow from neighbours before he could start the job. Our Scottish plumber was no better, although he did arrive with a spanner to fix a leaking tap. He broke the pipe and our new kitchen was flooded. Most would think that we had learned the errors of our ways, but we were naive and simply put the incidents down to bad luck. However, it was our dealings with an Irishman called Connor (a clue is in the name) that were possibly the most worrying. Connor, an Irishman, came highly recommended from neighbours to start work on our small swimming pool. He was a charming man, full of amusing stories, and displayed a knowledge of swimming pools that, to the unenlightened, was impressive. He had an annoying catch phrase of “No Stress, no Mess”, which he kept repeating at the end of most of his sentences. Connor assured us that our new pool would be built to the highest quality standards, and planning permissions would be obtained and completed in four weeks. We duly handed over a significant sum of money as a deposit to pay for materials, and waited for the work to start. Three months later we were still waiting for Connor to arrive. Sadly, his phone had by then been disconnected, he was not living at the address given and no one had seen him in recent weeks. Our neighbours were full of apologies, and we finally gave up all hope of ever having a swimming pool. A further three months later, a slimmer Connor arrived on our doorstep. He was full of apologies, and as charming as ever. It seemed that it had all been a case of mistaken identity relating to an issue with a ride on a lawn mower that had landed him into serious trouble with the police. Mistaken identity or not, Connor had enjoyed a six month stay in accommodation at His Majesty’s Pleasure, and appeared duly chastened by the experience. Readers who have spent an evening in a bar with an Irishman telling stories over a glass or two of Guinness will recognise that after a period, one’s brain closes down into a form of gentle submission. Connor

assured us that our money was safe and that our pool would be started the following day and completed within one month. True to his word, Connor arrived the following day with two men and started digging. Four weeks later, our new pool was completed, which we were pleased with. We paid the remaining money due to Connor and, apart from worrying about whether planning permission had ever been actually granted, we continued to enjoy the pool until it developed a major leak, which is a story for another time. The moral of this story is that we now have more open minds about nationalities that can get the job done. We quickly learned not to rely on British electricians, plumbers and builders, but to use those who can do the job at a reasonable price, regardless of nationality. Nowadays, we use a German plumber, a Canarian electrician, a Spanish builder and a Moroccan decorator. Our dentist is Argentinean and our favourite bar is owned and run by Romanians. Sadly, there are no Welshmen in this story. LACK OF RAIN COULD LEAD TO SWEET DISASTER Though many reports have bragged over the particularly dry spring, whilst basking on the beaches and enjoying the extended sunshine, warnings have been issued this week that the price of one of the provinces most sought after sweet treats, the famous Turrón, may rocket if it doesn´t rain in the next few weeks, as almond crops are at serious risk of being wiped out by the dry weather. Last year, the price of almonds increased by 10%, due to poor crops in that season, but that cost was mostly absorbed by the distributors. With this added risk of a “disastrous” season, many businesses working in the field are concerned that the price of good crops will have to increase as their will be fewer almonds to go round and the price has to reflect at least a basic income to the providers. Meanwhile, the largest association representing grain growers has issued a similar worrying report, stating that across the Valencia region, some 28,000 hectares of grain has been destroyed by the dry weather. The financial value for the farmers is in the region of 17 million euro losses, to which they are intending to apply for government aid, although the maximum possible to claim is 15,000 euro per farm. It is anticipated that the price of almond crops will increase by an extra 6% on top of the 10% increase of last year, which will have to be added down to the consumer, the alternative being sourcing cheaper almonds from outside the area once rich with plantations of the much enjoyed ingredient. However, that estimate is based on the hope that it does rain within the next three weeks, but if the effects of climate change continue, who knows what the future might hold for a global sweet industry with roots in the province of Alicante, let alone those farmers who work the land to provide some of the most basic ingredients that contribute to our everyday shopping basket.

THE WORRYING STATE OF TORREVIEJA STREETS

The Los Verdes political group of Torrevieja have issued a statement criticising the number of court cases filed against the municipality, which they say highlights the poor state of the municipality under the management of the government team, the result being the tax payer having to fund substantial compensation for falls and other accidents suffered by individuals in streets, avenues, parks and public gardens. Most accidents seem to result in the elderly or those with other mobility limitations suffering, and for that reason the group believe that the number of cases filed is only the tip of the iceberg of the amount of damage and injury suffered, due to the complex complaints and claim process. Once the option of court is considered, the group believes that many more people are scared off from filing a complaint to compensate them for damage, both personally and financially, as a result of the deficiencies in the maintenance sector. As legal aid is often difficult to obtain, and faced with the risk of losing an expensive case, it is no wonder that many people would be discouraged from taking action, but the group also feel that the number who do, and are successful, is indicative of the greater problem. The Los Verdes say that they have been “denouncing the situation for

years and these accidents often have serious consequences for those affected, which in some cases represents a significant impairment to their health and irreparable injury, disability and even death”. Considering the streets of Torrevieja are a worrying “trap” for many who use them, the Los Verdes are once again demanding action to rectify faults and bring the city up to a higher standard than current, where the infrastructure is seen as a particularly week part of a city that has seen mass business closures and vacant premises on every street, which has changed the image of a once thriving seaside town to one of dilapidation and degeneration.

BONUS FOR TORREVIEJA TOWN HALL WORKERS

I

n an extraordinary meeting this week, the town hall of Torrevieja approved the reinstatement of 25% of the December 2012 bonus expected by staff who work for the town hall. The bonus was suspended at the time due to financial restraints implemented by the central government of Mariano Rajoy, in order to tackle the deficit. Many officials had advised against the move,

including the financial controller of the municipal accounts, saying that it would contravene the rules which are still in place, but if paid, it may go some way to appease the 600 municipal workers who will benefit, many of whom have continued to protest against the town hall, objecting to a variety of labour issues. It is not yet clear how the struggling tax payers of the municipality will fund this banned bonus.

JUST WHO ARE THE ROAD RAGE KINGS OF EUROPE? A study by the France's VINCI Autoroutes foundation has confirmed that Spanish motorists are amongst the worst in Europe. It says that they are far more likely to use their horns, insult or pass other road users on the wrong side than other European drivers.

The survey was commissioned to compare the driving habits of the Swiss, British, Belgians, French, Germans and Spanish. Spanish drivers are far more likely to insult fellow road users (59% compared to an average of 56% amongst other nationalities), as well as overtaking on the inside lane whilst driving on motorways (35% compared to 28% elsewhere). Additionally 63% of Spanish drivers were found to be ‘horn happy’ and likely to use it toward other drivers who might annoy them, compared to the more restrained average of just 47%. But in defence of our national hosts, of the 12 practices surveyed, these were the only three where Spaniards were worse than average. VINCI said that they were actually less likely to adopt many of the traditional ‘risky’ practices behind the wheel than most other European Nationalities. And Spanish drivers also showed themselves to be aware of the dangers of drunk driving where 64%, compared with 60% across Europe, believed that driving under the influence of drink or drugs was the principal cause of death on their roads.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE IN SPANISH LOCAL ELECTIONS n a year’s time there will be another round of Local Elections here in Spain and all residents who originate from member states of the European Union have the right to participate in these elections. According to statistics published by Alicante only about 10% of eligible European residents living in the Province are actually registered on the electoral register.

I

The effects of this lack of participation of non-Spanish people in local politics and local issues often results in the needs of these people being inappropriately met. There is still time to get your name entered on the voter’s list in your local area and it is important to realize that your vote can make a difference! People living on Orihuela Costa will be pleased to see that at long last the long promised bridges over the AP7 motorway at La Zenia and by the proposed new school on the opposite side of the motorway to Playa Flamenca. These two new bridges will be welcomed by inhabitants and visitors alike and will at long last provide a safe pedestrian access over the motorway. The question that needs to be asked however is how it was possible that the bridges over the motorway were never provided for pedestrian access in the first place! How could the politicians living thirty kilometers away in Orihuela be so totally negligent not to insist that the motorway constructor widen the various bridges sufficiently to provide pedestrian access? This is especially significant when one realizes that many large urbanizations already existed inland from the beach prior to the construction of the AP7. Just take for example that Los

Dolces, The Valencia, Rioja and all the Villa Martin complex had been constructed at least fifteen years before the motorway was even considered. Further that most of the developed land that now makes up Orihuela Costa had already been zoned for residential development long before the motorway was actually built.

Why was the pedestrian bridge not built when the mororway was first put through?

The answer to why these negligent planning decisions were made lies clearly in the fact that the politicians who continue to treat Orihuela Costa in a cavalier manner have no knowledge of the coast. They live some thirty kilometers away and see the coast as the cash cow providing the revenue to enhance the lives of the inhabitants of Orihuela City and the small Spanish villages. The safety and well being of the inhabitants of Orihuela Costa have traditionally been of no interest to the politicians who serve the interests of those people who vote for them, and statistically these voters are not the residents of Orihuela Costa where less than 10% of the European residents have even bothered to get their name on the electoral list! Everyone should surely be asking how politicians can be so negligent in their duties for safeguarding public safety as not to ensure that there was pedestrian crossing over the AP7 at the time of the motorway´s construction. The plans for this motorway were surely scrutinized by the planners in Orihuela who gave their consent for the bridges over the motorway to be built without any consideration for pedestrians. Let us not forget that it is not Orihuela Council who is putting up the two costly footbridges at the moment, although I am sure that come the official opening the councilors will be out in force collecting their accolades for the construction that has been

paid for by the developers of Zenia Boulevard. Now is the time to ensure that you are included on the list of electors. Just go along to your town hall, here on the Orihuela Costa at Playa Flamenca, taking copies of passport, residencia, padron etc and get registered. Stop silly planning decisions by making your views known.

BARCELONA IS A MUST FOR CITY VISITORS f there is one place capable of conjuring up an equally strong image in everybody´s mind, irrespective of one´s own interests, it is the name “Barcelona” that perhaps provides the most diverse mix. As the second largest city in Spain, with a population of 1.6 million, the vast expanse of Barcelona covers a considerable space of land in Catalonia, but with most of the main attractions concentrated in one area, plus extensive and frequent public transport networks, it is very easy to get around and explore both the main places of interest, and those a little off the beaten track. There is no question that one of the biggest and most popular attractions in the city of Barcelona is the Sagrada Família, a tall and imposing Roman Catholic church, designed by the Catalan architect Antoni

Simple ways to stay positive e can’t always control events in our lives but we can control our reactions to these events. Whilst those of us with a more positive outlook on life find it easy to “think” ourselves better, it is often harder for those people who always expect a negative outcome. The good news is that it is possible to change your way of thinking if you want to, it just takes practice!

W

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS AFFIRMATIONS This is such an easy thing to do; repeating a positive phrase about yourself or a situation can have an amazing effect on how you feel. Many of my clients have found this hard to believe initially but after doing it for some time they have seen the results. Decide what it is you want to say about yourself or the situation and then say it every day out loud, preferably in front of a mirror. If you find this uncomfortable just do it anywhere; it will become easier and more convincing the more you do it. You can also write the affirmation down on a piece of paper and carry it around with you during the day and refer to it regularly. When you notice a change in how you feel, change the affirmation if you need to. Keep affirmations short and simple and always use only positive words e.g., “I am in good health” is more effective than “I don’t want to be ill, please keep me healthy”; – use words that suit you and reflect what you want. Say the affirmation as if you have those qualities or things now.

POSITIVE VISUALISATION VISUALISATION The more you worry about something the worse it appears, you avoid dealing with it and the fear and anxiety surrounding it becomes bigger. One way to deal with this negative energy is to imagine or mentally “see” a positive result. Start by sitting quietly where you won’t be disturbed and visualise yourself dealing with the situation in a calm manner and with a successful outcome. Really try to create as detailed a scene as possible e.g. if you need to sell your house start to visualise someone coming to view it, making you an offer, going to the notary together, signing the paperwork and so on.

REALISTIC GOALS Why do we push ourselves so hard? There is only so much we can do in one day. Rather than set yourself 20 things to do and feel upset when you don’t do them all, reduce the number of things to

23

By Penny Wing

10 and when you have done them all “pat yourself on the back” and acknowledge what you have achieved. Don’t rush from one task to another, sit still for 5 minutes, close your eyes and concentrate on this positive feeling before moving onto the next job. Regularly find time in between jobs to congratulate yourself and feel positive about yourself.

PAST MISTAKES MISTAKES We always seem to be able to remember the mistakes we have made in the past more easily than the achievements or successes. This can be one of the most challenging thought processes to change…but you can! Firstly, you need to accept that the past is past and you cannot change it. When you think back to a mistake you have made, take time to sit down and write down all the things you learnt from it. Ask yourself would you do the same thing again and invariably the answer will be no; you will then be able to acknowledge that even though it may have been hard at the time you have learnt a valuable lesson and are now more than able to cope with difficult situations. Turn negative into positive!

Sammy’s death in 1990. Born into poverty in Harlem, New York in 1925, Sammy Davis Jr went on the road at the age of three with his vaudeville performer father and appeared in his first movie before he was five. Broadway and West End theatre, Hollywood movies, network television, Las Vegas and performances before royalty and presidents were to follow. But given widespread prejudice during the early years of his career, he could not stay in the hotels where he performed. In addition to learning of Sammy’s struggle against racism and bigotry, Sir Bruce meets up with people who knew and loved him, including Burt Boyar, co-author of Sammy’s autobiography, and Lionel Blair. 00:25 ITV News and Weather. 00:45 Sammy and Bruce. EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON FINALS – RESULTS 15 MAY 2014 - BREAKAWAYS CLUB KO CUP FINAL Hub Meerkats 7-0 Busters LADIES SINGLES FINAL In association with Alex Nikolov Building Services Yvonne Rouffignac 2-1 Leah Chesworth MENS PAIRS FINAL In association with La Zenia Tool Hire Sid Cross And Steph Simpson 3-2 Mark Filer And Ray Harvey MENS SINGLES FINAL In association with La Zenia Tool Hire Pat Abrams 3-0 Sid Cross Knock out competitions and presentation of awards concluded an exciting and enjoyable Euronics season, that started September last and ended last week. All this took place at the Breakaways Club where three new names appeared on the magnificent perpetual cups and one familiar name on the Team KO Cup. The league´s shortest 501 leg wasn’t beaten on the night, nor was the highest finish. Fair to say that John Eyre didn’t expect his superb 170 out on the last league game of the season to be equalled and certainly not beaten. Sid Cross

and Paul Durrant couldn’t improve on their 180 season´s tally, although both came close. One player who did however improve on their personal maximums was Irene Russell of Busters. Her 180 in the team cup final brought the house down and was thoroughly deserved. The well supported Busters team, led by the one and only Shirley Roberts, didn’t take early opportunities in the cup final which ultimately proved costly as the Hub Meerkats reeled off the required 7 legs of 701 without reply. Sid Cross´s dreams of a unique double, the singles and pairs, didn’t quite materialise as man of the season Patrick Abrams (Meerkats) converted the three doubles required in the singles final. Cross however had already bagged the pairs title with partner Steph Simpson in a 5 leg thriller against Busters Mark Filer and Ray Harvey. In the Ladies singles nerves played a big part in the best of 3 shoot out. Each of the legs could well have gone either way, just showing what that extra bit of pressure can do to us mere mortals. Leah Chesworth´s bid for the title this year failed, but it was however one step nearer than last year´s semi-final placing. Yvonne Rouffignac won the title at her first attempt but readily admitted her stage fright was worse than the previous week´s semis. The evening kicked off with the cup final, Pat Abrams winning the bull for the Meerkats in the best of 13 legs 701 triple format. John Eyre and Paul Durrant were his team mates for the first 3 legs against the Busters trio of Ray Harvey, Mark Filer and Paul Dowinton. The match started tentatively, Abrams recording 2x80+ and Eyre 120. Busters response was via Filer with 85,100 and 95. Durrant´s only contribution in the first leg was D20 after misses from the opposition.

It was much the same in the second, Filer scoring similarly to the first leg, Dowinton adding a ton. Durrant woke up after a long series of low scores with a 140 his playing partners scoring steadily. Abrams D8 made it 2-0 and with the throw it looked promising for the Kats to take a 3-0 lead. All three Kats scored heavily, Dowinton replying with 2x100, but surprisingly only modest scoring from his fellow players. Requiring 36 Durrant hit a single 18 and D9 for an unexpected 3-0 lead. All change for the next set of three triples. Irene Russell, Peter O´Rourke and Will Drummond faced Alex Nikolov, Derek Kingsbury and Lee Maiden. All Busters scored well, but Maiden 2x100 and Nikolov 125, enabled Maiden to take out the double, albeit D1 for 40. A ton from each Kat in the fifth edged the cup holders in front. O´Rourke 100,95 and Russell´s 81 reduced the lead, ending with both sides unable to finish. After several attempts Kingsbury nailed, guess what, D1 for 5-0. Kingsbury subbed himself for Graham Todd to face the same Busters trio who scored indifferently until Irene Russell livened proceedings with three treble 20s for a fantastic 180. Was it enough for the leg? No, three 80+ from Nikolov and S10,D18 from Maiden made the score 6-0 and one leg away from victory. Both captains re-arranged their sides, Kingsbury opting for Abrams, Todd and Eddie Bendelow, Roberts going with Babs Warren, Dowinton and Filer. The Busters trio hung on grimly, digging deep with all three playing well, but Abrams was the difference hitting 100,121 and D14 for the 7th leg and match. It was the Kats fifth consecutive cup final victory, the record will show a victory without reply, a little unfair on a fine Busters side that didn’t quite show their true form.

The Ladies Singles final didn’t liven up until the third leg when both players seemed to relax and starting to hit the T20. Yvonne Rouffignac won the bull for first throw and recorded an early ton. Leah Chesworth´s reply was a 108. Both players reached a shot at the same time, but both suffered in the finishing department, Chesworth eventually finding D1 for 1-0. Chesworth couldn’t capitalise on her lead even with the throw in the second and let in her opponent to complete the 501 on D15 for one apiece. The decider was much better scoring wise, both players finding the treble frequently, after Chesworth had won the bull for advantage of throw in the decider. The finishing double wasn’t as easy to hit as the smaller treble and both suffered. Rouffignac finally got the remainder of 501 points to take the leg and title by two legs to one. I made Sid Cross and Steph Simpson the slight underdogs in the pairs final when facing the Busters duo of Filer and Harvey. The earlier warm up in the cup final determining my reasoning for the Busters duo. It was however the Hunks who won the bull to outscore the Busters pair, Cross delivering 140 and Simpson 95, their opponents scoring far more modestly. The Hunks made it to the double first, Simpson planting his second dart in D20 for an early lead, which didn’t last long as Harvey 100,85 and Filer 95,80 and a great 119 out (S19,T20,D20) levelled the match. Cross hit another 140 in the third and D1 for the lead again after Harvey had hit 70 to leave D18.

Image 5

Monday, 19th May, 2014 Further 140s from the Hunks (one each) proved insufficient as Harvey 81,81,121 and Filer 100 and D8 made the match all square with a decider looming. The Hunks won the right of throw in the fifth and posted three significant scores, the reply emphatic for the Busters duo 83,88,85 and 100 but not enough as Simpson got his second double of the final, this time on D4 for the match and pairs title 3-2. A 30 minute break followed for an excellent buffet, Cross and Pat Abrams limbering up on the practice board ready for play in the Singles final. Both players had been on stage earlier, the packed audience anticipating a cracker. It wasn’t quite the semi of last week between John Walker and Abrams, but it was very good. Cross won the bull but not taking the advantage and only scoring a modest 85 was countered by Abrams 140 to set up the double which was duly executed next visit converting D20 for 1-0. Cross upped his scoring in the second, but so did Abrams leaving 76. His first dart hit S1 instead of the required T20, but he quickly made amends hitting the outer bull with his second dart leaving the centre with one dart remaining. Where did it go, straight into the centre for a nice 76 out and a 2-0 advantage. Cross gave a good account of himself in the third with 100 and 95. Abrams response was similar 100,85,99. Both players reached the double at the same time and both missed more than once. Abrams grabbed his opportunity and finished D1 for a 3-0 score line and the singles title.

Vistabella Bowls Club Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice With no games scheduled during the Spanish Nationals Vistabella decided to have a friendly challenge between the Fairways and the Greeners and thanks to the relationship between all of the bowlers at Vistabella this was a great success. In accordance with the original selection of teams the Fairways won 4 of the 6 rinks played drew one and lost one but without naming any names we all then went on to enjoy a menu del dia in Los Montisinas so the only names we need to mention are those of Gail Willshire who organised the meal, Peter Wright whose idea it was to hold this game and Arthur Brown who did nothing except choose the Fairways team. The only other item worth noting from this game was our sympathy to Andy Leggatt who lost to his wife Doreen and who will obviously now have to live with this until we get the chance to reverse the situation. Our Saturday roll up was won by Martin Foulcer (it was only a matter of time before he won it). Nothing else to report until the Leagues start again.

ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY - ORGANISERS TROPHY ALTORREAL GOLF – 13th MAY 2014 It was down the AP7 to the Murcia region, Monforte del Cid and Altorreal Golf, they prepared the course for us knowing how good Rockets members are, because they put us off the white tees, making it quite long!

So it was a prompt return to Izzy’s Bar for the presentations and the luxury of Roxy’s munchies, I know we keep on in every report about Izzy’s/Roxys’s chips but they really are the best The next game is at Alicante Golf on Tuesday 27th May. The first Tee Time is 10:00, so please be there at 09:00 for breakfast which is included. For more information or if you wish to play with the arguably the friendliest Golf Society contact Ron Nicholson on 678 849 142 or email sanmigron@gmail.com

SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB No league match results this week because of the Spanish National Championships being held at San Luis, San Miguel & Quesada bowls clubs. So far the ladies rinks and men's trips have been played through the group stages to the semi finals. I am very pleased to say that San Luis Men's trips team consisting of: Colin Jackson, Colin Lindgren & Mal Hughes won all their round robin matches to finish top of their league and will now play in the semi-finals which are due to be played on Thursday 22nd or Friday 23rd May at Quesada. Currently the Ladies & Men's singles are being played out but I have no news of our team members, still keeping fingers crossed (makes typing difficult but hopefully worth it!!). The Ladies triples & Men's rinks will be played over the weekend and then both pairs knockout competitions take place with all the finals scheduled to be held at Quesada on Saturday 24th May. We wish all our San Luis players the very best of luck and I'm sure they would appreciate any support if people want to go along to watch. For any information about San Luis Club please contact June Jones (Capt) 966188920 or Pam Lockett (Sec) 965327645. By Sheila Cammack.

TORREVIEJA VETS FALL TO VALENCIA IN FIRST LEG Despite suffering defeat by 3 rubbers to nil the Torrevieja Tennis Club composed of Humberto Zuleta (captain), Thomas Bascuñana and Roger Losada put up an excellent showing in the first leg of their regional tennis Final against the might of Valencia as both Bascuñana as Losada, lost their singles matches in a third set tiebrake. Zuleta and Bacuñana, then lost their doubles match 6-3 6-4. Next Monday the trio will have home advantage in the second leg.

GREENLANDS BOWLING CLUB NEWS by Saturday Roll-up The results as follows: high Roller top spot goes to Jim Reeves with 24 pts who picked up the Brandy followed closely by Jack Redfern who came second with count back and had to settle for the Beer!! Third was Steve Hibbard and Helen Langlois won the fourth prize. The dreaded spoon this week goes to Eileen Merrick as a 'Welcome back' reminder!! She has been absent for about 2 weeks so we hope she will soon be back to her normal high standard. Twenty-two bowlers turned in this week and we hope this trend will continue. A good day was had by all. Greenlands Has a Clean Sweep. It is not always Gongs & Glory at Greenlands someone has to keep the rinks and surrounds in pristine condition and that involves a lot of elbow grease from time to time.

This week, by way of a change Team Glosters 'played at home' yet again and drew the short straw! To maintain standards and get the job done right the Glosters work party was 'supervised' by Team Capt Chris Dewer and Vice Team Capt Dave Thompson. I was going to take photos of everyone putting in a great deal of effort and achieving an outstanding result ….as usual. However, a sizable chunk of the Glosters play on Tuesday mornings and after the morning games they decided to crack on and were finished and leaving when I turned up on time at 1400hrs; so no photos. The Club Capt. Hilda arrived just ahead of me and did a final inspection and declared it 'a job well done'. All the workers are to be suitably congratulated. I was missed, I had this note by email: 'Sorry missed you at the cleaning parade but it was done after todays games with a depleted squad TTFN J. O'.

EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB BY ROBIN On the 9/5 the Emerald Isle Vulcans played an away match against the San Louis Mosquitos. The Vulcans are really getting it together thanks to our captain Bill Allen. We won on 4 rinks & drew on one, we had a shot difference of 103-77, giving us an 11 points to 3 win. Our biggest winners were Sheila Wickens- Tony Capewell-& Bill Allen who had a great 29-6 win. Other winners were Tony Culpin- Ed McLaughlin - & Stan Cheetham. Sandra Kavanagh- Eric Brookes-& Frank Close, Margaret Riley-Yvonne Mallaburn& Trish Hanna. Berni Evans- Sheila Adams-& Frank King, got the draw. Very well done to all of you, thanks also to Barbara, Robin, Keith & Maria for turning up as reserves to support the team, This team is really working well together!

Brian Hewett

(THE SCRIBE)

On the same day our Senior team ( the Victors) had a bad day at the office but at least one team, Len Fisher, Mike Stacey & Chris Ayling saved the whitewash with a draw. Things can only and will get BETTER! Good luck in your next game. In the last report I mentioned our win against the Hijackers but I forgot that on rink 7, one of our new members, John "the bandit" Pooley played for the opposition (as Skip) he and his two partners not only won but beat one of our team captains and also won the cash for his partners!! I have heard on good authority that the Hijackers have made an offer to Brin (team captain) believed to be 2 pints of ale, for the services of the bandit. At the time of going to press Brin is considering this very fair offer. In the meantime DRINKS on John.

CRASH AND WIN IN CATALUNYA SUPERMOTO CHA MPIONSHIP. The Supermotoland.com race team were in Catalunya over the weekend with both their riders competing for honours in the Catalan Supermoto championship. It was the first time that the racing brothers from Murcia had been to the Menarguens circuit near to Lleida and so they had a limited amount of time to learn the circuit before their qualifying sessions. Despite the lack of circuit knowledge and a crash each in practice, both brothers managed to qualify on the front row of the grid for each of their races. With Mat Ford–Dunn qualifying in 4th position in the SM4 class and younger brother Anthony qualifying a superb 4th in the premier SM 1 class. Anthony was the first to race and the battle between the first 5 riders was very intense with close racing throughout the field. Anthony was in fourth position on the last lap and whilst making a pass on the brakes at the end of the straight he fell, damaging his bike and dislocating his shoulder. The damage to the bike meant he was unable to remount despite his shoulder clicking back into place as he picked himself up. Anthony was unable to compete in the remaining race due to his injury and therefore lost his lead in the championship from his two race wins in the previous round of the Catalan championship in Mora de Ebre. Mat Faired better in both of his races in the SM 4 class with a double victory that extends his championship lead and gives him four wins, from four races. It could have been a different story though as a puncture in his front tyre in the first race meant he had a desperate last couple of laps to keep ahead of the pack as his front tyre slowly deflated. The brothers now have a few weeks of testing and training ahead before they line up on the grid in Badajoz for the 2nd round of the Spanish championships on the 8th June. With both brothers holding 3rd position in the SM open and SM 35 Master classes you can bet that they will both be looking for a bit more speed over the coming weeks to hopefully elevate them to the top step of the podium. The latest video of the first round of the Spanish championship and race reports can be found on the teams website. www.supermotoland.com

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Bonalba - 14.05.14 There is an old saying that when the cat’s away the mice will play, well with both the Captain and the Vice Captain away play we did play, at the verdant course of Bonalba. It really looked good, well watered and nice greens and the organization there is second to none. Our lowest handicapper, Ray Moles almost got a hole in one on the par 3 eleventh, his ball skimming the hole to stop six inches away, someone suggested that he missed the putt, but I am happy to report he did not. Although the skies were overcast with rainy mist in the air and hardly any wind on most holes, it was a perfect day for playing golf. Our thanks go to Brian Smith who did a sterling job of starting us off and as you will read below, he did a sterling job on the course as well. Gold Division: 1st Brian Smith 32pts, 2nd Brian Coultate 30pts and 3rd Ray Brown 29pts Silver Division: 1st Mike Cutts 33pts, 2nd Alan Crain 32pts and 3rd Stan Earl 30pts Bronze Division: 1st Steve Harrington 27pts, 2nd Paul Carter 26pts and 3rd Margaret Obrien 25pts (c/b) NTPs: Brian Smith holes 4 and 14, Dicky Claeys hole 8, Ray Moles hole 11. The 2s pot was shared by Rod Day and Ray Moles. Alan Crains number was pulled out for the free game next time. Our next game is at Roda for the Spring Cup on the 28th May, see you there.

TORREGOLF.EU AT HACIENDA DEL ALAMO

By Paul Durrant Vistabella was the latest chosen venue for Villamartin´s number one sports bar, the Hub. In its third year now, the members had never visited the eleven hole layout as a society and for some it was a first time ever. There were the usual numerous prizes to be contested, three nearest the pins, members Grand Prix competition and the PJ´s Rentacar best guest awards. Only two players figured anywhere near their handicaps, one a member, the other a guest, winning each of their respective categories. One guest Peter Elbourgh nearly came away with all three nearest the pins, only to be beaten on one by Norrie Simpson, who just happened to achieve

best guest. Elbourgh´s close friend and fellow member at Chartham Park back in the UK, Gary Gates won his second members Grand Prix event of the season. He now sits at the summit of the best 8 of 15 summer long competition. Next even for the Hubbers is at Hacienda del Alamo on May 25th. Interested players should register at the Hub sports bar (Villamartin). Results: N.T.P. RUBY’S GOLF SOCIETY AT EL PLANTIO No, not Friday the 13th. but Tuesday 13th.May saw us returning to this lovely course in Fuente Alamo, Murcia. Though course maintenance had recently been going on it did not stop some good scores being recorded on a course which is the longest here in this part of Spain. There were no significant things to report other than it was good to see one of the first members to join TORREGOLF.EU, returning to play once again after 3 years, glad to see you Tony (Rudd) and that at long last your knee is now or should I say nearly 100 per cent better. To celebrate a photo with El Presidente. 2 Categories to-day for our Stableford competition with prizes going in Category 1. 1st. Joe Curran 38 points 2nd. Ken Holmes 33 and 3rd. Con Moore 31 points. Our photo to-day shows the winners on the splendid terrace at Hacienda del Alamo L-R, Frank Reed, Liam Higgins, Joe Curran, David Winder, Con Moore, Ken Holmes and Roger Twigg.

El Plantio was our hosts for this months Stapleford trophy match, the course was in excellent condition and the scores reflected this with only an odd point separating the winners. Overall winner on the day was Michelle Evans who also won the gold division, the silver division was won by Buck Taylor who got a "birdie" on the 15th but I have got a to say the bird, a goose, was not happy and vented his or hers anger when we passed on the fairway. Buck won the best front nine, other winners were best back nine Jeff Evans, nearest the pin in two and longest drive for the men Nigel

TMGS AT LA FINCA

Today in 1894, Blackpool Tower was first opened to the public who paid a tanner (6d) entrance fee and another tanner for the use of the lift to the top. Also on this day, Mick Kennedy was the only Member to break his handicap on a well presented course but tricky/slow/bumpy greens of La Finca. La Finca, one of the most popular courses in this area saw 40 members and guests of the Society tee off into a slight breeze and with clouds threatening some of the wet falling down stuff, but I am pleased to say that the rain stayed away. Only 3 of the 4 NTP’s were won and the recipients of TMGS golf balls were Paula Hagart; Kjell Aaesbo and Pauling Johnson. Also recipients of a sleeve of logo balls for their “two’s” were Joe Dean and Arne Hansson. Mickie Noble once again secured the Guest prize and I have heard a whisper (more like a war cry) of a cut to his handicap for the next time he plays with us. He also won yesterday with the Bog Road society and fellow Bog Road’er Ernie Wilson is going to supply him with a mask for his next game. The Silver Division was ably won by Mick Kennedy with 38 points which was 7 points clear of runner-up and 3rd places with 31 points with John Hagart claiming 2nd ahead of Peter Johnson on the count-back system. 4th place went to Peter’s wife, Pauline with 30 points. The Gold Division lads fared slightly better and the winner of this Division was Alan Rickers with 35 points, one ahead of Dag Lovas on 34 points for 2nd spot. 5 players tied for 3rd and 4th spots and once again, the countback system was employed and in 3rd place with 33 points was Arne Hansson and 4th was Paula Hagart with 33 points. BARCA POINT SEE’S ELCHE SAFE AS HOUSES ELCHE CF .............0 BARCELONA ......0

W

hat were we all worried about ? With a game to go, away next Sunday to Sevilla, Elche secured their Primera División future with another unspectacular, yet still solid, performance to shut out the mighty Barcelona. Roared on by 34,000 odd spectators, none of whom had a clue what was occurring elsewhere in other games, Elche did what they had to do to secure another priceless point, quite possibly their most valuable of the entire campaign. At the final whistle, noone seemed quite sure that a point would be enough, an uncertainty that would last just moments. In recent weeks, Richmond Boakye and Cristian Herera have shared the lone striker duties, tonight, though, manager Fran Escribá started without either in a set up that spoke of a determination not to lose. For their part, Barcelona made do without midfield kingpin Xavi Hernández who had to settle for a place on the bench, otherwise the two starting XI's were pretty much as expected. Looking a little out of sorts, Barcelona controlled the opening exchanges without ever really putting the home side under any particular pressure. As is their wont, they had the lions share of possession, which Elche seemed happy to concede, but weren't really able to fashion that many clear cut chances. Andrés Iniesta went close with almost a quarter of a hour on the clock when his fizzing shot from the edge of the box was helped onto the bar and over by the excellent Manu Herrera. From the resulting corner, the same player scuffed another shot horribly. With the close control of Messi an ever present threat, Elche had to concentrate and it was in defence, as so often already this season, that most of their hard work was done. Up front, the pace and quick feet of loan signing Garry Rodrigues looked to be Elche's best route to stand-in Barcelona keeper José Manuel Pinto. The Dutch born Cape Verde international needs to find the target more often though, (when he does, the results are spectacular, just ask Willy Caballero). Goal-less at the break and so far so good for Elche. Barcelona began the second period as they had for large parts of the first, keeping hold of the ball and shifting it around, seemingly at will. Messi was denied early in the half by the knees of Manu Herrera as the Argentine magician tried, unsuccessfully, to create half a yard of space. By now, in the middle third of the half, Elche were increasingly under the Barcelona cosh and only outstanding defending kept the scores level. As the visitors pressed on, dominating possession in dangerous areas, Sergio Pelegrín was superb in central defence for Elche

Elche fashioned, and then squandered, a decent opportunity of their own. Coro and Carles Gil combined well on the hour only to see the latter spurn the chance. His body language was plain to see and the player himself knew he could and should have done considerably better. Apparently content to soak up pressure in their own half, Elche were playing a dangerous game and would end up grateful for the Catalan profligacy in front of goal. Barca looked the more determined of the two to try and win the thing but in their anxiety to open the scoring they were leaving gaps at the back as they committed men forward. Fran Escribá rang the changes, sending on Boakye for the final twenty minutes and the Ghanaian had a hand in one of the best chances of the match. Beating two Barcelona Lionel Messi, Barcelona’s beating heart.

TWO MILLION EURO IN UNPAID TAXES FOR IKER CASILLAS According to 'La Vanguardia' newspaper last week, the Real Madrid and Spanish National goalkeeper Iker Casillas has had to pay around two million euros to the Hacienda in unpaid taxes after being accused by the authorities of tax avoidance. The amount paid by the keeper responds to differences in how he was applying the rules regarding certain parts of his income, the newspaper said, adding that sources close to the players representatives say that "both he personally and his company, Ikerka, have always been absolutely aware of their fiscal accounts and tax obligations and have constantly worked with Hacienda to ensure their declarations are accurate and submitted on time. There have simply been some minor differences in the interpretation of the rules which have now been resolved. A spokesman for the Hacienda did say, however that there would appear to have been no intention of evading the tax obligations At least seven La Liga players are currently being inspected for alleged non compliance in their tax obligations, the most high profile of which, Lionel Messi, the former ‘World Footballer of the Year’ recently made a payment of €5 million to cover monies owed during the period of investigation. The Spanish Court is still waiting to pass its verdict regarding their conclusions in that particular case. Other players caught up in the Hacienda investigations are said to include Xabi Alonso and David Villa.

players just inside his own half, he strode powerfully forward and released Rodrigues down the left with a superb weighted ball. With his first touch, the 23 year old skimmed Pinto's crossbar with a rasping drive off his left foot. With time running out and with the visitors showing an increasing urgency, there was one final scare for the home side. Hitherto, full back Damián Suárez had played a disciplined game and, unusually for him, had barely ventured forward all match. It was his foul on Tello, though, that put his side under pressure for the final time. Such is the quality of Barcelona, a winning goal late on would have been no surprise. Instead, Xavi's free-kick floated over to the back stick with nobody in a Barcelona shirt attacking the ball. Full time Elche 0 – 0 Barcelona When the fixture lists were published way back in August last year, the sharp intake of breath was audible. Barcelona – expected to be going for the title again - were the last side Elche fans, fully expecting to be in some kind of relegation dogfight, wanted for the final home match of what was expected to be a long and difficult campaign. Instead, Barca proved altogether less durable than previous vintages and Elche more obdurate than expected. Something had to give and, in the end, in this match nothing did.
