SPRING CLEANING ON THE COSTA The Councillor for the Environment in Orihuela, Manuel Gallud, has launched a citizen driven campaign this week to raise awareness of the importance we all have in keeping our local surroundings clean and tidy. As part of the initiative, the councillor is looking for volunteers to help the Protección Civil and the Pasico a Pasico organisation who will embark on a major cleanup operation on the 31st of May. For this campaign, three distinct locations are being targeted, the Caseta del Guarda in the Pinar de Bonanza area, the chapel of Pilar de Montepinar and the area around the Cruz de la Muela. Everybody involved will be given protective work equipment whilst involved in the campaign, and a luncheon will be provided to the volunteers by way of thinking them for their efforts.

Although volunteers can just turn up at any of the three points on the day, which will start at 08:00, the councillor has asked that you register in advance, partly for logistical reasons, but also to make sure there is enough equipment and lunch to go round. This can be done via their Facebook page, “Medio Ambiente”, or by sending an email to medioambiente@orihuela.es. According to the councillor during the presentation, the aim of the activity is to “educate the public about the importance of keeping the area clean”, and is developed through the voluntary activities. Meanwhile, that education may come in the form of a bitter pill for one person caught dumping waste this week, as both the town hall and local police have praised one resident, Cath, who managed to snap a photograph of somebody dumping a large amount of waste on the Orihuela Costa from a Land Rover vehicle. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The information was communicated to the town hall´s international coordinator, Heike Schug, who immediately started to take action, despite the matter being raised out of normal office hours, passing the information to all the relevant groups involved. As such, the local police are now investigating the incident, with a clear image of the dumping taking place, and the number plate of the vehicle, with the owner of that particular van now facing a fine of around 700 euro upwards. Although it is not known if that waste was commercial or not, the fact that it was such a large

amount and it was clearly transported to the dumping site and deposited on the Orihuela Costa is seen as totally unacceptable, not only by the residents, but also the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, who also praised the actions of those involved in trying to keep the streets clean. It is also worth remembering that the town hall of Orihuela are subscribed to a service known as Linea Verde, which offers both an Android and iOS application for smartphones which enables prompt reporting of incidents, including pictures and location, which can also provide for a prompt response.

The town hall do not want to return to a situation like last year, when a number of residents were also fined by the police, but the fact is that they provide a service, which many residents still don´t pay for, and all they are asking for is cooperation in trying to keep the waste to a minimum on the streets by communicating with the town hall. However, the police are already aware of a few incidents so far, including the one this week, and they have a duty to enforce the laws and byelaws, so if dumping does continue, then fines should be expected, and the responsibility for those who do care

enough to keep the area clean, such as Cath, will be praised for their actions as was the case this week. The town hall has already started to make plans for controlling the collection service once again, publishing guidelines and advice on how to deal with domestic garden cuttings, with the simple solution that you should contact the town hall in advance in order to ask when and where to put your clippings on the streets, in order to minimise the time it is there, as they will then tell you the best time and arrange collection. However, commercially generated garden waste is not acceptable, as in clippings and

cuttings which have been created by people who are working as gardeners, getting paid to provide a service, and yet expecting the residents of the municipality to pay for disposing of the waste that their activities have created. All the information on times and schedules can be found on their website, www.orihuela.es, by telephoning the Orihuela Costa town hall on 96 676 00 00 ext 29, emailing them on costa@orihuela.es, or visiting the town hall itself, where the staff will be more than happy to help. FIRST TORREVIEJA PIPED GAS DELIVERED IN LOS BALCONES The first part of Torrvieja to become active includes the area around Torrevieja Hospital

he councillor for works and services in the city of Torrevieja, Javier Montoro, has announced that piped natural gas has been delivered to the first customers in the city this week. Gas Natural Cegas has been laying the foundations for the network for some time, and have now switched on the supply in the Los Balcones area of the city. The active area also includes the Torrevieja hospital, which also allows them to replace their original liquefied gas supply to a healthier, cleaner and more cost effective fuel. The collaboration between the company and Torrevieja town hall was affirmed in a symbolic switch on in February, when the Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, turned the key at the site on calle Mar Jónico in the area of Barrio de San Roque. In a press conference at the time, it was explained how seven million euro had been invested in the 45 kilometre distribution network, with the aim of connecting 96,800 homes and businesses in the next two years, providing cheaper, cleaner and

T

more efficient energy to the residents of the municipality. Once established, the network will also cover Orihuela, Redován, Benejúzar, Algorfa, Benijófar, Los Montesinos and Torrevieja, with anticipated savings of up to 40% on a household energy bill. Natural gas is considered as the most competitive and environmentally friendly fuel available at the moment, which also helps to provide a more efficient energy supply to homes. The work has now extended to calles Rafal and La Paz in Torrevieja by a company established more than 160 years ago in Valencia, with some 644,500 supply points and a distribution network of over 7,800 kilometres so far. The company supplies natural gas to 195 municipalities of Valencia and continues to invest heavily to extend their natural gas supply to new areas as well as strengthening their distribution network and transportation links.

DRUNK DRIVER IN MIXED BLESSING CRASH 24 year old male, identified with having the initials D.G.A., has been arrested for colliding with a number of parked vehicles whilst he was driving drunk. However, fortunate not to have killed himself and other road users, luck dealt a wakeup call as the four vehicles he collided with all belonged to the Guardia Civil and were parked outside the barracks in Benemérita in the town of Guadalajara in the autonomous community of Castile–La Mancha. The incident occurred in the small hours of the morning, at around 4 a.m. last Sunday and the driver gave a positive alcohol test of 1.14 milligrams of alcohol per litre of breath. In addition, two Guardia Civil traffic officers suffered minor injuries when their patrol vehicle was in collision with a truck on Sunday on the A-5, at kilometre 210, in the Arnoya de Ourense area. The two officers suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Hospital del Carmen. The truck driver, meanwhile, was unhurt.

TASERS INTRODUCED IN CATALAN POLICE FORCE

NATIONAL POLICE OFFICER KILLED IN MALAGA INCIDENT

Catalan police are now equipped with a new, none-lethal weapon in their equipment kit, as Tasers have been introduced in addition to their normal firearms. The police have undergone an extensive training scheme on how to use the weapon, including having it used on themselves so they can be fully aware of the effects of using it. The introduction has not been without controversy however, when the use in detaining one prisoner resulted in a variety of injuries, but many other argue that any injury is far better than the police having to use lethal force. A Taser is an electroshock weapon sold by Taser International. It uses electrical current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles causing “neuromuscular incapacitation”.

An officer from the National Police died following an incident in Málaga on Wednesday.

The emergency coordination centre reports that they received calls for assistance to an incident on calle Frigiliana at around 7 in the evening. There were confused reports from the scene that the officer may have been stabbed, after which gun shots were heard, with witnesses reporting hearing five shots. The officer was accompanied by a colleague at the time of the incident. The 33 year old officer was transferred to the hospital Carlos Haya, to later die as a result of stabbing injuries incurred in the incident. The alleged perpetrator of the stabbing was also admitted to hospital, suffering gunshot wounds to the shoulder. It is believed that the man was shot by the second police officer in order to protect the safety of those under attack. A woman is also reported to have been injured, a suspected victim of shrapnel after the incident. Numerous other patrols attended the scene to assist. The deceased officer was identified as Francisco Díaz Jiménez.

The locations where the judges will serve have all been selected as a matter of priority, “according to the most urgent needs”, and will serve the courts for a period of “at least” a year. Of these, 14 will be sent to cover the judicial offices in the province of Alicante, 3 in Castellón, and 14 in Valencia. In addition to the provincial capital of Alicante, the judges will be covering cases in Orihuela, Torrevieja, Elche and Villajoyosa. It has been stressed that these judges are not replacements, but are provided to assist in the ever increasing backlog of cases and tremendous delays that the court system suffers. The twenty women and eleven men were sworn in during a ceremony attended by King Juan Carlos.

Yet another familiar Banking name bites the dust

irst Lloyds announced it was pulling out of the Spanish banking market and that it had sold its branches to Sabadell CAM, which upset a huge number of its clients. Now its Barclays turn, Barclays announced last week that it was pulling out of Spain, Portugal Italy and France. Barclays have said that these branches will be moved to a non-core business entity; this will become part of their planned “bad bank" which will eventually sell or close all of the £115bn of non-core operations. "Bad banks" have been used by a number of institutions since the global financial crisis as a way of ring-fencing risky loans and assets. The carve-up will give greater prominence to Barclays' retail operations in the UK, its Barclaycard credit card arm and its African business. "This is a bold simplification of Barclays," said chief executive Antony Jenkins. "We will be a focused international bank, operating

F

only in areas where we have capability, scale and competitive advantage." So for all of you who Bank with Barclays you now know what the bank thinks of its loyal expatriate banking customers, they are placing you in a bad bank, severing their responsibilities to you. My advice to you is if you use Barclays for your day to day banking and are happy leave your account as it is and see if Barclays manage to sell, if they don´t manage to sell and decide to close their branches they will give you notice so you can find an alternative then. If you have cash lump sums sitting with them or investments (that don´t carry hefty redemption penalties) now is the time to consider moving them. It’s not just Barclays; in February this year Norwich and Peterborough Building Society announced it would close its Gibraltar branch at the end of this year. In January this year HSBC Bank International (HBIB) completely closed down its Isle of Man and Guernsey centres for international clients who are based overseas. The list seems to go on and on, the sad truth is as stated in a previous article I wrote in the RTN in February 2014 is: “The main reason for this is that Banks just don´t want or need YOUR money. According to the British press banks and building societies have built up a £130billion war chest of dirt-cheap cash. These intuitions have been stockpiling money and paying little or no interest on it as a result for the foreseeable future they don´t need to pay struggling savers any extra interest or work to keep existing clients.” If you have been or will be affected by the above, there is no time like now to act, if you are unsure as to what is available and what option is best for you just call me on 658 892 330 or contact me by email christina.brady@blacktowerfm.com. BEACHES, FOOTBRIDGES AND PIRATES ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA The tender for providing life guard services on the Orihuela Costa has been published via the official regional bulletin, and closes on the 5th of June. There are already at least two different companies who have shown interest in bidding for the contract, but the information will not be available until the tender period closes. The contract negotiations for providing beach bars in Orihuela is still ongoing, with both sides continuing dialogue to ensure compliance with all terms, including debt repayment, which is in the hands of the contracts department of the town hall. The two new remaining pedestrian bridges on the Orihuela Costa, the first near the yet to be completed school, the second on the Villamartin road, are set to be officially inaugurated on Thursday the 29th of May at 12:00. The Mayor of the municipality, Monseratte GuillĂŠn, will preside over the official ceremony which will be attended by some of the other councillors involved, at the site of the Villamartin road bridge, near the Zenia Boulevard. The infrastructure department are now looking at how the pathway will continue at the Villamartin end, which was not part of the original plan for the bridge construction, with a view to provide both a crossing and safe walkway to the next street in the route. The ASOKA animal protection group, who manage the municipal animal welfare centre, are once again urging people to not feed human food remains, or wet cat food to the colonies of stray cats living on the coast. They are asking those who wish to feed the animals to continue

by only giving them dry cat food, so as to reduce the leftovers which attract other animals such as rats and insects. The town hall meanwhile are urging everybody to also take their rubbish home, after numerous people have been seen discarding tins and cat food packets onto the waste ground, rather than putting it into the dustbins. AS well as causing an eyesore in the area, some of this waste also blows into the sea and has been known to kill marine wildlife who try to eat the waste products. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has announced that the Orihuela Costa will play host to a traditional Mariners Market at the end of July. This time, the event will take place near to Playa La Glea in Campoamor, and will be held from the 30th of July until the 3rd of August. Much like the Medieval Markets, the Mariners Market offers a wide range of gifts and goodies, many of which are handmade, and is a welcome addition to the cultural calendar whenever it visits a town or city.

PARTY GRANTS UP FOR GRABS

D

espite the news last week that 49,694 homes were repossessed from defaulting borrowers in 2013, a 10% rise from a year earlier, whilst many of the so called “social housing” units still stand empty and barren, and this week´s news that 1,275,700 Spanish job seekers has not worked in the last three years, a figure which equates to 1 in 5 of the six million total unemployed, the people of the Alicante province will at least have something to look forward to with the announcement of a 600,000 budget to spend on fiestas. The Diputación de Alicante has set aside 607,557 euro in aid for trade fairs and commercial events, of which 132 municipalities in the province, nine more than last year will benefit. Overall, the budget has increased by 25% above last year´s party contribution. The deputy responsible for public works and development, Alejandro Morant, has explained that this year the Dipucatión has been removed the population limit in order to qualify and apply for aid, as last year it was only municipalities with fewer than 35,000 inhabitants who could apply. He stressed that “the great interest in this competition between the municipalities of the province and its contribution to the revitalization of the local business sector promoting the cultural, artistic and gastronomic 1landscape of the municipalities”. The grants are designed to assist municipalities in addressing issues such as the cost of renting “stands” or “marquees”, as well as providing technical assistance, publicity and promotion of the show, renting lighting or sound. The 25% increase may well be seen as favourable initially, but with municipalities of larger sizes now able to apply, the total budget will have to spread further, which could well now see the smaller municipalities suffer as the money is diverted towards the bigger areas. However, the maximum eligible amount is 5,000 euro and is determined by the population of the municipality, and smaller municipalities are able to cover the entire costs of their fiesta using the grant, the larger municipalities are likely to only be allowed to use it as a token contribution. The Vega Baja is set to benefit from a 111,515 share of the total, which can be divided between the 27 towns of towns of Albatera, Algorfa, Almoradí, Benejúzar, Benferri, Benijófar, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Catral, Cox, Daya Nueva, Daya Vieja, Dolores, Formentera

CORVERA CABLE THIEVES CAUGHT

Officers from the Guardia Civil in the Region of Murcia have arrested two people for their alleged involvement in stealing cables from the unopened and unfinished regional airport at Corvera. The two detainees, of Spanish nationality, have been the subject of an investigation after it was discovered earlier this year that cable was going missing from lighting and beacons near the access roads at the airport facility. In total, some 16,000 metres of cable has gone missing, with a value of 100,000 euro. The investigation led officers to a scrap and waste company in the Campo de Cartagena, where the officers were then able to identify the two suspects in the case following the finding of cables that matched the style taken from the airport. The two suspects, residents of Fuente Alamo, were then apprehended on suspicion of being responsible for the theft.

BRITISH PASSENGER AIRLIFTED OFF FERRY The Spanish coast guard carried out a helicopter extraction of a British passenger from on board the ferry “Pont –Aven” bound for Santander on Monday, after a call to a medical emergency. Helimer 218 was dispatched from the base at Santander to an area about 95 nautical miles to the northwest of Cabo Mayor. The ship had called for assistance after the passenger had fractured four fingers on his left hand, apparently after a fall. The call was made to the French rescue coordination centre, who in turn contacted the Spanish Salvamento Marítimo, who carried out the successful operation. The injured passenger was taken to the hospital de Valdecilla.

ARRESTED FOR INSTALLING SPY APP ON MOBILE PHONE The Guardia Civil in Burgos have arrested a 23 year old male, identified with the initials D.H.P., charged with a crime of discovery and disclosure of secrets and against privacy, after installing an application on his partner´s mobile phone in order to keep a track of calls, text messages and the location. The arrest took place after the owner of the mobile phone became concerned over fast battery drainage on her phone. The matter was reported to the authorities who investigated the device and believed charges are appropriate. It is believed that the man installed the application whilst pretending to carry out another task on the handset, thus installing the “app”. The

installation allowed the accused to monitor the activities of the phone, without the user realising. A number of similar applications are available for mobile phones, some marketed as being just for fun, others for apparently legitimate reasons such as monitoring the whereabouts of children or family members, with their permission and knowledge. Upon identifying and locating the man, he immediately admitted the facts, and was presented to the courts in Burgos.

WOMAN GIVES BIR TH ON RESCUE SHIP A woman, of sub-Saharan origin, gave birth on Tuesday, moments after boarding a coast guard ship engaged in rescuing over 50 people from a small boat in the Alborán sea. A Spanish navy ship was also nearby, with a doctor on board, and moved to the area, but the staff on the rescue ship had already assisted in the birth, cutting the umbilical cord and reporting both mother and baby were doing fine. A French navy ship had spotted the small craft in the sea and alerted the coast guard, who immediately dispatched a rescue helicopter along with the rescue ship to the scene. Upon arrival, the crew noted 52 people on board the vessel, including children, and began the rescue operation. The rescue ship, Guardamar Caliope, took now 53 passengers, including the woman and baby, plus 13 other women, 33 men and 5 children, to the port of Almería.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Statistics and Sunshine I rarely trust statistics, and particularly those in articles in the press that begin with “According to the latest statistics…”. I know far too much about how ‘flexible’ statistics can be, and how they can be twisted and manipulated to match the political arguments and headline grabbing deceptions of the day. Recent headlines in the UK press screaming “One in five British Expats in Spain returning home” and “End to the Mediterranean Dream for British Expats”, and “Has the Sun Set on the Expat Dream in Spain?” caught my attention recently. They were an amusing read, but I felt that they required rather more clarification. Distrustful as I am of UK statistics, I am equally cynical about Spanish data. In the case of Brits returning home, the statistics came directly from Spanish Town Halls, which are not exactly renowned as being at the pinnacle of statistical efficiency. This data comes, of course, from British expats taking the trouble to register with the authorities and entering their names on the register; many do not, and particularly those who have holiday or rental homes, and intend to live in Spain for less than six months each year. Back to the headline grabbing horrors, “One in five British expats in Spain returning home”. What the article doesn't mention, of course, is

that four out of every five expats still choose to live in Spain, and are very happy about it. This is merely a different interpretation of exactly the same set of statistics, but it doesn't make such a good headline, does it? It is true, of course, that the recession and reduction in job opportunities have led to serious financial difficulties for many expats who have decided to return to their countries of origin. However, suggestions that sun seeking retired expats now prefer to give up on the traditional retirement hotspots of Spain, France and Portugal in order to live in Dubai, the Caribbean, Thailand or even Switzerland are simply ridiculous. Since I moved to Spain, there has always been movement of those who longed for a new life in the sun, only to find that it was not for them. Many were unwilling or unable to learn the language, appreciate the culture, missed British TV, or continually complained about an exchange rate that was lower than expected. These expats quickly returned to their home countries, realising that life as an expat was not for them. Others faced the hardships of death of a partner, family problems, serious illness or breakdown in relationships, making a return to the UK inevitable. Statistics aside, my own contacts in the removals business in the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands confirm that there is by no means a one-way exodus to the UK. Retired expats, seeing the property bargains to be had in Spain, France and Portugal are heading out to pick up a dream property at a good price. Prices in favourite retirement destinations, such as the Balearics and the Canary Islands, remain buoyant, because of considerable interest from Scandinavian,

German, Russian and even Chinese buyers. I also know of many expats who have returned to the UK, mainly for financial or health reasons. In many cases, the returned expats have not settled well in their home country, and their one aim is to return to Spain at the earliest possible opportunity, and when their personal circumstances improve. So, for those who have deserted a gentler and more relaxed life in the sun to return to the cold, damp UK, I raise a glass and wish you well. However, the use of flawed statistics by the press do not tell the true story, which is that most of us are very content with our lives in the sun! If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). MAZDA MX-5 TAKES CONVER TIBLE AWARD

BY NICK IRELAND The World’s best-selling two-seater sports car is still acclaimed by fans and media 25 years after its launch. More than 113,158 units of MX-5 have been sold in the UK since 1990 alone and on May 15th the Mazda MX-5, was presented with the prestigious ‘Convertible Award’ at the 2014 honestjohn.co.uk awards, in London. The awards are allocated to those vehicles that attract the greatest numbers of page-views on the honestjohn.co.uk website. The hugely-popular Mazda MX-5, which won ‘Most Popular Roadster’ in the honestjohn.co.uk awards last year, has continued to prove its lasting appeal to visitors on the site over the past year – as well as its ability to deliver sports car performance, without the price tag.

“The Mazda MX-5 has long been regarded as the most enjoyable and engaging open-top car, building up a huge following over the years,” explains Dan Harrison, Editor of honestjohn.co.uk. “So it's perhaps no surprise to see it coming out as the most popular convertible on honestjohn.co.uk. Its combination of buzzy performance and superb handling, combined with an affordable price tag has clearly found favour among our users.” Last month the Mazda North American Operations debuted the MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). A global announcement, this limited-edition automobile will be sold as a 2015 model. The anniversary edition was built not only as a tribute to the unassuming diminutive roadster that sparked a large automotive impact but also to celebrate every owner and car enthusiast it's won over throughout its 25-year history. "The original concept behind the MX-5 was so simple: to offer the pure joy of a lightweight sports car that moves precisely as the driver intends," said Takashi Yamanouchi, chairman of the board, Mazda Motor Corporation. "While responding to increasing safety and environmental requirements, in the 25 years since its launch we have had to continually reinvent the MX-5 – far beyond a simple evolution – in order to stay true to that original ideal. The history of the MX-5 is one of changing everything in order to stay the same, a history of innovating in order to preserve."

CAN YOU SEE THE ITV?

An often confusing aspect for drivers in Spain is the appearance of a coloured rectangle on the windscreen of cars. That sticker corresponds to the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV for short, which displays that fact that the vehicle has passed a periodic and mandatory test of roadworthiness. The sticker is placed on the windscreen of cars and is regulated by Royal Decree, which states that “vehicles that have favourably passed the periodic test shall display in a conspicuous place a distinctive, which date indicate they must pass the next inspection”. Anybody who has been for one of these inspections will known that it is much like the equivalent of the M.O.T. in the U.K., albeit with different qualifying criteria, but on passing the test the vehicle´s documents are updated, and the sticker given to be displayed on the windscreen. As for where the sticker is displayed, that too is dictated by law, and it Is mandatory to place it in the upper right corner of the windscreen as you are looking out, affixed to the inside, so that the sticker can be clearly observed from the outside of the vehicle, where it will subsequently be displayed in the upper left hand side. A common question relating to this sticker is whether old ones have to remain as time goes by. The simple answer being that as the sticker is used to indicate the date of the next required test, then the answer has to be “no”, only the current and valid sticker should be present. There is a fine for not displaying the sticker correctly, with the driver possibly becoming liable to an 80 euro sanction, halved if paid in good time, but simply ensuring the sticker is in the right place, and valid, can avoid a lot of undue hassle during routine vehicle checks.

SCANDINAVIAN ACADEMY CELEBRATES GREEN FLAG In a ceremony on 15 May, attended by staff, parents and children, the Scandinavian Academy of Orihuela Costa celebrated the granting to the Academy of the environment certification, the “Green Flag”. The Nordic Council has promoted eco-schools as an instrument for achieving a sustainable environment in the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. The award of the Green Flag recognises the environment achievements of the recipient schools. To obtain the award, schools must demonstrate during a two year period activities in the field of energy saving, recycling and improvement of the open air environment. The Orihuela Costa Scandinavian Academy has conscientiously followed this programme. Some months ago it inaugurated a rooftop garden constructed from entirely recycled material. Children help remove litter from the local area. The enthusiasm for which school and children have pursued the objective of obtaining the Green Flag award was very present at the celebration on 15 May. Local C.L.A.R.O. Councillor, Bob Houliston has supported the Academy in obtaining the award and making known to

the local Orihuela and Orihuela Costa community their success. A representative of the Parents Association of Orihuela Costa municipal schools attended the ceremony and will try and arrange meetings and activities between the children of municipal schools and the Scandinavian Academy in order to promote integration on the coast.

CHAPLAINCY OF ST PETER & SAINT PAUL SERVICE OF CONFIRMATION A grey and grizzly La Siesta early morning did not dull or dampen the spirits of those who attended the La Siesta Church Centre on Sun 18 May 14 when four members of the Chaplaincy of St Peter and St Paul were ‘Confirmed’ in what was a joyous and delightful Ceremony. The sun duly shone towards the end of the Service!

The confirmands were Colin Anderson (La Siesta), Thomas Gladwell (Los Balcones), Sandra Harbut (Lago Jardin) and Michael Walker (La Marina (San Fulgencio)). Supporting members of each of their congregationspresented the candidates for Confirmation.

MAN ARRESTED FOR AMBULANCE THEFT A 43 year old man has been arrested by officers from the National Police in the town of Vélez-Málaga on Wednesday, after he allegedly stole an ambulance with four patients on board, telling them to strap themselves in because he was on a secret mission. The ambulance driver alerted the police of a topless and barefoot man who had stolen the ambulance. Several patrol cars were alerted and rushed to the scene. The man, who did not have a license to drive, was stopped within a few minutes of his mission, having driven around a kilometre, with lights and siren active, and the patients still on board. In a statement after the event, one of the patients said that they realised that the person at the wheel was “not the usual driver” and questioned him of his status. The reply, according to the witness, was, “I'm secret police, I'm hurt and on a secret mission”. He has been charged with vehicle theft and dangerous driving.

TRADITIONAL SPANISH PAELLA AT ROCKY’S aella is a Valencian rice dish that originated in its modern form in the mid-19th century near lake Albufera, a lagoon in Valencia, on the east coast of Spain. Many non-Spaniards view paella as Spain's national dish, but most Spaniards consider it to be a regional Valencian dish. Valencians, in turn, regard paella as one of their identifying symbols. There are three widely known types of paella: Valencian paella, seafood paella and mixed paella, but there are many others as well. Valencian paella consists of white rice, green vegetables, meat (rabbit, chicken, duck, land snails), beans and seasoning. Seafood paella replaces land animals with seafood and omits beans and green vegetables. Mixed paella is a free-style combination of land animals, seafood, vegetables, and sometimes beans. Most paella chefs use calasparra or bomba rices for this dish. Other key ingredients include saffron and olive oil

THERAPIES FOR THE FIVE SENSES A romas and colours to make you feel good; laughter to improve your mood; age-old techniques and oriental massages that will give you balance and wellbeing... Are you up for trying them? They are all available at Spain's spa resorts and thermal centres. Traditional treatments are being renewed with the latest trends in health and beauty therapies. Why not try them out for yourself? Spain is a well known destination for thermal spa treatments, thanks to its quality facilities and excellent waters. Now you will also find a renewed "menu" of treatments in traditional spa resorts. They include the latest therapies and innovative techniques, although the aim remains the same: to improve the condition of the body, inside and out. This trend is also giving rise to another type of centre, which is getting more and more popular - the spa and hydrotherapy centre. Would you like to discover new experiences? These programmes open up a world of sensations. It has been proven that heat, essential oils and music all have a beneficial effect on our state of health, both physical and psychic. Baths with flowers and citrus fruits, aromatherapy, and music and colour therapies complement and reinforce the results of traditional thermal spa treatments. The Puente Viesgo Spa Resort, 28 kilometres from Santander (Cantabria), is one of many locations where you can try for yourself.

Age-old alternative techniques We are discovering age old techniques from the Far East that look for balance between body and mind. They do this eliminating disturbances in the flow of vital energy, returning the body to a state of physical well-being and harmony. You can opt for sessions of reiki, shiatsu, reflexology or a geo-thermal therapy massage, at places such as theTalasoterapia Zelai Centre, in Zumaia (Guip煤zcoa); Blancafort Spa Resort (38 kilometres from Barcelona); or in Tarragona, at the Ra Beach Thalasso-Spa hotel, and Montbri贸 Thermal Centre. Would you like to try something more unusual? The Mondariz Spa Resort (58 kilometres from Pontevedra) has a Celtic circuit, based on the therapeutic heritage and know-how of this ancient people. You could also try a session of laughter therapy at the active well-being centre at Paradise Park Resort, in Tenerife, or improve your memory and attention span through the spatherapy programme and braining treatments offered at the Marina d'Or complex, in Oropesa del Mar (Castell贸n). Whatever you decide, and these are just a few of the suggestions you might like to consider, you will go home good as new.

ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO SPENDING ON THE INCREASE Consumers in Spain spend more than 7 billion euro on tobacco products and more than 3 billion euro on alcohol each year, according to a new study by the EAE Business School. Despite the country-wide smoking ban in certain areas, Spain is still in the top 5 countries of smokers, along with Greece, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Japan, with cigarette consumption actually increasing, as each smoker now uses 2,462 cigarettes (or equivalent) per year, an average of 6.75 packs or 123 cigarettes per day, a 4.46% increase on last year. Extremadura, Madrid and Aragon are the areas where the biggest tobacco spenders are located, whereas the Canary Islands, Navarra and Catalonia yield the lowest expenditure. In terms of alcohol, the report shows that the average cost last year was 684 euro per person, an increase of 1.30%, pitching the country around the middle in comparison terms with other countries.

Geographically, the Basque, Catalan and Balearic zones spend the most on alcohol, whereas those who spend less are located in Extremadura, The Canaries and Cantabria. The average consumer profile of alcohol consumer in Spain is the man, 65 years or older and a graduate with a second and third stages, while the average profile of smoker in Spain is that of a woman, aged between 45 and 64, and with secondary education.

what interest there would be in the area. As part of this campaign, the group will be performing a display on the 1st of June on the Orihuela Costa, the same day of the Pink Ladies charity walk and Solidarity Run, where they will also be on hand offering information and leaflets on what they do, and answering any questions you might have. The group is currently composed of an international membership, so there should be no concerns about coming together as part of a community, as they all work tirelessly together to ensure that everybody is welcome, as part of an association that is growing with interest with every day, and as part of a group that people of any age can join in. TORREVIEJA LIFE GUARD COMPETITION This weekend, La Mata and Torrevieja could well have been considered the safest place to be on the coast of Spain, as the beaches and municipal swimming pool played host to the Spanish national lifeguard competition. Taking place on the 24th and 25th of May, the event saw over 100 athletes take part, all looking to be crowned the champion of life-savers. It may well have proved a daunting task for some of the heroes of the beach to reach the accreditation of one of the competitors though, as Concepción

Having been slowly growing in support from their base in Torrevieja, sweeping up medal after medal, the NAZOMI Judo Club is now looking to expand its training services on to the Orihuela Costa. With members starting at just 3 years of age, and then going through all different age groups, the training sows the seeds for some of the most important foundations for a stable and healthy lifestyle. Discipline, respect, control and defence are the key elements handed through the training programs. The club is a member of both the national and regional authorities who monitor and ensure compliance with all aspects of safety and procedures required when taking groups through their sometimes gruelling training, and also provide competitions for the participants to enter. Now, the group hope to form a permanent base at the new Orihuela Costa Cultural Centre, where the Reading Point is housed, and are looking to see

Escatllar Fernández de Misa was one of the athletes taking part, having already won 50 international medals, including merit from the Spanish Olympic Committee. The event was organized by the sports department of Torrevieja town hall, in association with both the national and regional groups representing life guards, the Federación Española de Salvamento y Socorrismo (FESS) and the Federación de Salvamento y Socorrismo de la Comunidad Valenciana (FVSS).

CLAPTONS G.S. MAR MENOR GOLF

This month’s competition was held at the prestigious Mar Menor course. The weather looked as if it was going to be kind to us with a warm day and very little wind. However as the day progressed the wind decided to make its presence felt which meant that on some of the long par fives the wind was in our faces which obviously the course designer meant it to be. In the end the wind made very little difference as we returned with very good scores, with the silver division coming out on top. Congratulations to Tony Wilson having the honesty to change his handicap down three shots to where he is playing at the moment. With everybody finished we made our way back to the Clubhouse for

our usual meal and presentation. Our thanks to Chris and his staff for excellent hospitality once again. INTERNATIONAL 4 NATIONS BOWLS TOURNAMENT Athena Beach Hotel, Cyprus 21st to 25th April 2014 By Jackie Breslin, Team Manager I was fortunate to be selected as Player /Manager for the second 4 Nations Bowls Tournament hosted by Bowls Cyprus, the venue this year was the fabulous Athena Beach Hotel, truly a great bowling venue although some of the greens now need some remedial work on the bases to maintain the hotel's high standing in world bowls. Having just missed out on winning last year we were all determined to go one better this time round and with our team of : Men : Jackie Breslin, Pete Bonsor, Steve Cantley, Steve Pearson and Graham Cathcart. Ladies : Sheri Fletcher, Lisa Bonsor, Yvonne Brydon, Debbie Colqhoun and Jan Dando. We were all fairly confident as we left Alicante airport. There were 3 different disciplines Ladies Team, Men's Team and Overall Team and after day 1 overall we were sitting 2rd, 2pts behind Israel, however our ladies continued their great team performances they had shown over the last year and were already 5 points clear, winning both pairs and both triples games. Our ladies continued to show their class, winning 2 pairs games and all 3 triples games on day 2, our men were still not performing to expectation only picking up 5 out of 12 points available but hopes were high that we would finish strongly. The ladies had lost only 1 of the 10 games played and were running away with their team discipline

after the pairs and triple events. Moving on to the singles and rinks on day 3 with Jan playing singles and Sheri skipping the rink of Debbie, Lisa and Yvonne the ladies had no intention of letting their form slip and won all 4 games. The form of our men did not improve only picking up 1 win in the rinks skipped by Pete with Jackie playing singles. Overall going into the last day we were sitting joint top with Israel with a 20 shots advantage, our ladies to their credit had already won their discipline, so all to play for. The final day could not have been better with us playing Israel for the overall team gold, Israel like our ladies had won the men's event with a day to spare. So, with everything to play for I decided to make a change to the format of the men's team with Pete playing singles and me moving over to skip the rinks, this seemed to work with Pete winning and the rinks close at 9 all after 9 ends but failed to win another end, so could our ladies continue their winning ways? Because of our superior shot difference 1 more win would do us, but our ladies were having none of it winning both games handsomely. This crowned an excellent tournament with the Ladies winning Gold and Gold overall for the team, medals and cups were presented at the Gala dinner. A big thank you goes to Bowls Cyprus for their organization and hopefully we can return next year to defend the title, just to finish I would like to thank John Muldoon, our National Director and all the other supporters who travelled.

LA SIESTA BOWLS REPORT This week saw the conclusion of our yearly ‘friendly’ game The Egg Cup Challenge, which Yours Truly had the pleasure this year of being Captain, against our neighbours from down the road San Luis. Happily for us, it was victory for La Siesta winning by an impressive 19 points to 9. The format was two games, home and away, of six rinks of trips. We got off to an excellent start in the home leg taking the points 12-2, and then drawing the away leg 99. SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB

No league matches to report this week, but plenty of action, on the 14th & 21st of may we had an Australian pairs comp, over the 2 days we had over 60 players, the winners on the 14th were Renata Mulloy & Alan Clasper, and on the 21st Ed Mc Laughlin & Elwin Morris, well done to all concerned. On Sun 18th, we had our monthly chicken & egg drive. Frank Close won the spider & a nice bottle of something strong ( no, not domestos). John (the bandit) Pooley, & Trish Hannah won the chickens, the eggs went to Sheila Howcroft & Tony Harris. Well played to all 5 of you. On Thursday 22nd we had our monthly game against our friends the Royal British Legion, they beat us in the last match, but this time we had a great win, 8 rinks to 0' with a shot difference of 208 to 81, our biggest winners were Maureen Jeffs- Denise Horn- Geoff Farrington who won by 37-2. Despite this unexpected big win there were no moans from the "Legion" they are such nice people and a pleasure to play against, Thank you Legion. I have to report that after his chicken winning game on Sunday John (the bandit) Pooleys transfer to the Highjackers has now gone up,Brin (capt) wants a packet of crisps to go with the 2 pints of ale, seems fair to me! Lastly for all new and potential players the S.A.P.S will now be at 9.30 for 10am. You can be provided with Woods, Shoes and Tuition for only 5 euros so come along and enjoy good Bowls,& good company. Keep Smiling Robin (the scribe)

By Sheila Cammack. Again no league match results this week because of the Spanish National Championships. However we did manage to squeeze in the Egg Cup Challenge, played against our close neighbours at La Siesta. Unfortunately San Luis lost the away leg 2 -12 and just managed to draw 7-7 at home so this year the Egg Cup went home with La Siesta. But we'll be back again next year to try and reclaim it! The San Luis Men's trips team consisting of: Colin Jackson, Colin Lindgren & Mal Hughes who won all their round robin matches to finish top of their league will play their semi-finals v Pete Bonsor's team at Quesada at 8:30 on Saturday morning. The winners to play the final on Saturday afternoon. In the men's singles we had 3 players reaching the quarter finals. Colin Jackson beat Peter Whitehall (SM) and Mal Hughes beat Richard Cooper (Maz) but unfortunately Colin Lindgren was knocked out by Pete Bonsor (Q). This meant that Colin and Mal had to play against each other in the semi finals on Friday morning, with Mal Hughes going through to the final v Pete Bonsor. Good luck to all our players. After all the focus on the Nationals for 2 weeks it's business as usual next week, starting on Monday & playing again on Friday, good luck to the Wellingtons, Hercules & the Mosquitoes for the rest of the season. For any information about San Luis Club please contact June Jones (Capt) 966188920 or Pam Lockett (Sec) 965327645.

IN THE BUNKER WITH ‘MICK THE GRIP’

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE facing No. 2 Course, Pinehurst, in June will be to have the greens and fairways in perfect condition for the women’s Open Championship on the 19th.. It may be a tall order after 156 players, caddies and countless others have tramped all over them during the men’s Open which starts on June 10th. Each day the “U.S. Open Experience” in Pinehurst Village will provide entertainment for the fans with concerts and displays. The Bob Jones Award, the USGA’s highest honour, will be presented posthumously to Payne Stewart who won the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, and will be followed by a big screen showing of the climax, which came down to a dramatic finish on the 18th between Stewart and a young Phil Mickelson. Stewart, who became known as Pinehurst’s champion, died in a plane crash on Oct. 25th of that year. SPAIN’S MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ finished fourth at this year’s Masters. Close, but no cigar. Seven days later he won on the US Seniors’ Tour. Definitely worth a cigar. Earlier this month he married his girlfriend Susanna Styblo at the Jimenez Golf Academy in Torremolinos. (He did take his cigar out for the photos.) Now he has become the first player over 50 to win on the European Tour after winning the Spanish Open in a playoff on his 27th attempt. Rioja and Cigars all round. Adam Scott also tied the knot this month with Swedish girlfriend Marie Kojzar at his house in the Bahamas. “We asked friends to come over for a party, we didn’t let on about the wedding,” he said, “We dressed up a little bit but it was still in the backyard.” If you’re picturing dustbins and washing lines, forget it. This was Adam Scott’s backyard. TWO MEN STOLE more than £750,000 worth of equipment from over 60 golf clubs across England by posing as golfers. Although captured several times on CCTV, their faces were always hidden by their

caps as they entered changing rooms and walked out with golf bags. The professional burglars, one of whom lived in an £800,000 house and drove a Bentley, sold the swag overseas, but were finally caught during a police investigation into a corrupt lawyer associate. They are now doing a three and five year stretch, and won’t be needing any clubs for a while, unless there’s a course at Pentonville. MATTHEW FITZPATRICK (19) from Sheffield won the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship, rocketed to the top of the Amateur rankings and gained automatic invitations to both the U.S. Open and the Open if he remains an amateur. Siren voices are telling him now is the time to turn pro, after missing out on $30,000 prize money in the RBC Heritage, where he finished level with Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer. Matthew may be wise to wait a while. Garrick Porteous, the Amateur No. 1. turned pro after the Masters this year, headed off to the Malaysian Open and came 141st out of 156. It’s tough out there. Justin Rose turned pro in 1998 aged 17 after coming fourth in the Open at Royal Birkdale, but immediately went into a dramatic decline, with 21 successive missed cuts. (Though he has improved since.) PROMISING “DISTANCE FOR ALL” Taylor Made have introduced their SLDR S driver, which features a 57 gm shaft, available in extra stiff, stiff, regular and senior, and a 47 gm for ladies. T. Made (keen to promote loft) say it is simply not true that only pros and the lowest handicappers can benefit from loft adjustment. They tell us any golfer can generate massive distance gains with the SLDR S regardless of swing speed, with a choice of 10°, 12°, 14° and now even a 16° model. We believe them, don’t we? Until next time, happy golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repairs. Tel: 638 859 475.

CLARKE’S BAR GOLF SOCIETY AT HACIENDA For our weekly stableford competition this week we traveled to the long course at Hacienda del Alamo thanks to an excellent deal offered by the course. We arrived to find the course in pristine condition and a warm sunny day with a very noticeable breeze blowing. Because of the length of the Par 3s it was decided that to give everybody a chance we would play these 4 holes from the blue tees which shortened them by about 15 meters each making them reachable for most of the mem-

bers. The scoring on the day was good on the whole but a couple of players did struggle to score many points. Results on the day were: Nearest the pin on hole 12 was Tommy Clarke Nearest the pin on hole 15 was John O'Connor Nearest the par 4 16th in 2 was Tommy Clarke Winner with 34 points was John Porter Runner up with 33 points was Tommy Clarke Next week we are going to a new venue for most of us at Alenda meet at the bar at 07:45

‘RELAXATION’ Performing well under pressure is a “coping skill” which champions apply naturally and golfers without these skills are only there, to make up the numbers. Fear will always be a part of golf, and anger is sometimes a problem, just as excitement can be, but golfers can find comfort in the knowledge that there is a very easy way to reduce the effect of these feelings and this knowledge will then enable them to play well instead of failing under the pressure of competition. Relaxation is the key and it is available to everyone who is prepared to practice it correctly, the golfer can then ask for the pleasant control, which the “peace” of relaxation provides. The requirement for relaxation can start even before we play, particularly when trying to get to sleep the night before an important event, at these times, possible success or failure can pass through the mind, preventing the sleep needed to provide energy for the following day. We must understand how to place all of the muscles of our body in a “state of peace”, because only then can we dictate peace of mind. It may appear obvious that the relaxed feelings needed to sleep are not required at the time we play a shot, all shots need muscular effort, but the controlled muscular effort, which a good understanding of relaxation can provide and with TEMPO, which is a freedom of controlled movement needed to combat golf stress. This inner calm is often needed when we have an awkward chip or putt, these times our mind can race along, and the endless ‘thinking’ before we attempt the shot extends the worry and stress to a state of impending failure. If we know how to relax, then this situation is less likely to occur and we will play the shot with the “short time control” which offers success. To deal with the build up of stress on the course we have to find ways to overcome the inevitable waiting time. To reduce the worry which waiting can offer, we have to distract our thoughts away from golf until it is our turn to play, like tidying your bag or yourself. Just do something other than worry about the next shot, and then you will be more successful when it is your time to play, you really could “smell the flowers”. If you behave sensibly on a golf course and keep your smile going you will then be able to keep calm when there is the need. If, on the other hand, you lose your temper and get up tight then you must expect less than satisfactory results. The answer should always be enjoyment. BENIJOFAR GOLF SOCIETY CAPTAINS DAY-ALTORREAL Wednesday the 21st May saw 24 players heading off to the course at Murcia for the final day of Andy Trefry’s tenure as Captain. He decided that the events on the day would consist of a Stableford event combined with a yellow ball team event in which players took alternate turns to play the yellow ball and the points scored on that hole added to the team score. As soon as the yellow ball was either lost or not playable then only the points scored up till then counted. Only two teams managed to play the whole round and hand their ball back in at the finish ! It was in fact the Captains team who won this event , returning with a score of 36 points with the runners up coming in with 31 points and third place with 29 points. Nearest the pin winners on the par 3 holes were Carol Firth on the 5th and Larry Kinsella on the 8th and on the back nine it was Roy Greenway on the 10th and Vice Captain John Fullicks on the 17th. On the 4th hole , nearest the pin in two shots was Andy Trefry and nearest the pin in three shots on the 6th was Carol Firth. On the long par five 11th hole, Andy Trefy was nearest in 3 shots and nobody hit the green with their 2nd shot on the 18th green. Most points scored on the par threes went to Dave Smith with 10 points and Chris Byrne won the par fives with a total of 9 points. Twelve players scored 30 points or more which made it very tight for the prizes and in 4th place by virtue of a higher handicap was Dave Moore. Brian Ead was third with Steve Edwards as runner up as all three players had the same score of 32 points. Winner on the day was Larry Kinsella with a total of 33 points with the first two players receiving meal vouchers for “Harrys Bar” and third and fourth receiving “bottles” all donated by John Sanchez. In the “2’s” competition there were 2 players who qualified and split the pot between themselves to win 22 euros each. Winner of the football card was Dave Moore. Thanks go to Yolande and Ron of the Sportsman Bar for laying on the food upon our return and after the prizegiving, Andy Trefy introduced the new Captain for the year John Fullicks who made the shortest incoming Captains speech in 12 years ! LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY

We started the week with a 2 ball better ball played in beautiful conditions with prizes being on offer to the top two teams. Coming out on top by one point with a good score of 44 pts was the team of Roger Tunstall and Bryan Neal. In second place was the team of Brian Dent and Joe Rothery with 43 pts beating the unfortunate Nick Campbell and Phil Herrington also with 43 pts on count back. Brian Dent played exceptionally well scoring a total of 12 points on three holes. There was one game played in the singles Match Play Knockout competition with Alan Douglas playing very well to eliminate the inform Rod Doel. On Wednesday it was President's Day with some 50 players vying for the trophy. Our President John Wheeler decided that the format for the day should be a singles Stableford competition and in addition to prizes for the top five positions there were six nearest the pin prizes on offer. Although the course was in excellent condition and the sun was shining the blustery winds made scoring difficult and it was no surprise that no one was able to beat par. John ensured that everyone was well nourished and watered with copious supplies of pork pies and beer etc. available throughout the round. When the cards were handed in at the close of play the top five were all within two points of each other however the outright winner with 36 points and one point clear was none other than our very own Chipping Queen Carole Wheeler who just happens to be the President's better half! Three players were tied on 35 pts and had to be separated by a count back. The

photograph shows Carole with the trophy together with husband John, Geoff Biggerstaff, Ken Robertson and Mike Frankish. A full list of the prize winners were as follows: 1st. Carole Wheeler 36 pts 2nd. Geoff Biggerstaff 35 pts (c/b) 3rd. Ken Robertson 35 pts (c/b) 4th. Mike Frankish 35 pts (c/b) 5th. Phil Herrington 34 pts Nearest the Pin. 6th and 15th. Lindsay Forbes 7th. Friedel Knebel 12th. Allen McClusky 14th. Mike Frankish 2's Club: Mike Frankish (x2) Olga Douglas, Dave Pulling, Lindsay Forbes, Rod Bryant and Rachel Leckey After the event we all sat down to a wonderful lunch at the Las Ramblas Clubhouse Restaurant which rounded the day off superbly. A big thank you to our President John Wheeler for a great day and also to our Secretary Dee Biggerstaff and the Las Ramblas staff for their magnificent support at this and other functions throughout the year. On Friday we played a Change Partners with each member of the 4 man team playing with a different partner every 6 holes with the best score of each pair counting towards the teams overall score. The winners with an excellent score of 87 pts were John Collins, Rod Bryant, Brian Humpheyson and Dave Pulling. There were two more matches played in the singles Match Play Knockout competition with John Wheeler and Phil Herrington progressing to the next round. Mike Chapman

The competition, open to all Spanish swimmers found some travelling from as far as Jerez. All Torrevieja Masters swam in the maximum of three events each plus the 4 x 50m medley relay. The days competition was long and tiring but this was rewarded with some great results for the swimmers. In the 70yrs+ years category Beth Altabas won gold in her 100m medley, 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke events. This, not to be beaten, was followed with 3 gold medals for Paul Matthews in the 65yrs+ 100m medley, 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly races. Vicki Connolly then continued in the same manner winning golds in her 45yrs+ 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 400m freestyle events. Then in the penultimate race of the day, after having 2 earlier personal bests in his 30yrs+ 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly events, Adam Stewart excelled himself in his 400m freestyle win-

ning a bronze medal. To round off an excellent days swimming the team then swam the last race of the day the 4x 50m medley relay in the 200yrs+ age group. With serious competition from teams from the host club of Murcia, Torrevieja’s relay team earnt themselves a bronze medal, only missing out on silver by 2 seconds. The team now have a difficult standard to live up to in this weeks Regional Championships, this year to be held in the 50m pool in Torrevieja, 31st May – 1st June. Whilst all this excitement was going on in Murcia the younger members of the club were in competition Saturday and Sunday in the Municipal pool, Elche. Last game out Leaders Club 25 v/s Sierra Golf Although the leaders lost the first game they proved too strong for their opponents winning 6pts to 2pts & 20 holes won each. So the Final Table: Team Pts 1st Club 25 57 2nd Roco Juna 48 3rd La Manga 44 4th La Zenia 42 5th Sierra Golf 36 6th Marinasol 31 7th San Javier 29 8th Hacienda 28 9th Costa Blanca 28 10th Sprightly Crew 20 So Very well done to winners Club 25 As you can see although the winners won by 9pts all other teams are within 20 pts from second to ninth so well done to all the teams in the league proving without doubt the best league format in Spain. ELCHE LOSE THE BATTLE BUT WIN THE WAR BY JOHN MCGREGOR

SEVILLE ................3 ELCHE CF .............1

nlike several sweating competitors, Elche’s survival for another year in La Liga fortunately didn’t rest on the result of this match. The hard work and necessary results had been done previously with several late, key achievements, which meant the Franjiverdes had just enough points (40) to look down on those lesser mortals, and dream of next year… still in the big league of Spain, current European and Global champions in World Cup year. The Elche team was half-full of untried players and reserves, and all subs were used. Iberra put the home side into the lead on the quarter hour, and it stayed like that into the second half until Jairo made it 2 – 0 on the hour. Iberra got his second 11 minutes later to leave the Illicitanos nowhere, but Boakye scored in injury time to make the final score more respectable. Mighty Seville had won the Europa Cup on Wednesday and finished fifth in La Liga, so Elche’s defeat was predictable. The magic 40 points safety margin had been achieved with the season-saving goalless draw at home to mighty Barcelona the previous week. In the end the final positions were, in reverse order, Real Betis (25 points), Valladolid (36 points) and Osasuna (39 points), all three went down to league 2A - the one Elche spent 26 years trying to get out of. But last weekend Granada (41 points), and Almeria (40 points) could have gone down if their final results had gone wrong. Elche finished in 16th place, only Granada above them of the fellow strugglers. If the Barcelona result was key, the 1 – 0 win away at Malaga the previous week was priceless, those three points virtually guaranteeing La Liga football next year. For much of the season there was little cause for alarm: Elche were

never in the top half of the table, usually hovering just below halfway. But as the pressure rose with time running out the bottom teams started winning, and the Franjiverdes went through a depressing run of goalless draws, with penalties missed as the deadly spot-kick ace Albacar was out injured for several months. From being relatively comfortable Elche began to slide slowly but surely downwards, fingernails bitten as the worst scenario, relegated straight back down again to misery and local ridicule began to look a possibility. The perennial problem, again seen all through this tumultuous season has been scoring goals. Elche have managed a miserable 30 in 38 games, the lowest in the league - even rock-bottom Betis managed 36. With that statistic alone it’s a wonder Elche managed to stay up, but one of the club’s strengths traditionally has been their defence and here was the key to the Franjiverdes’ survival. 50 goals conceded was infinitely superior to all fellow-strugglers, and you have to go up to 11th-placed Malaga, and ironically their great ex-Elche goalkeeper Willy Caballero to better the Illicitanos’ defence that conceded 46 one of which was newbie Rodriguez’s bullet in that priceless 1 – 0 win. Do the midfield not do enough? Ruben Perez, Javi Marquez, Carlos ‘The Rock’ Sanchez and more are reasonable players, but don’t score goals themselves or supply enough chances for the struggling strikers. Boakye is the best bet upfront, local boy Christian Herrera tries hard, and last year’s leading scorer Coro has been very disappointing. The close season will be very interesting to see who stays, who goes and who comes to the Martinez Valero - but right now everyone is smiling in the City of Palms – Elche stayed up! Mucho, mucho Elche!

WOLFPACK G.S. OPEN 2014 Playa Serena – Roquetas de Mar 76 trombones led the big parade, we had one that was blown with gusto by our musical director, Michael Hithersay, and it was certainly enough. Micky added “On Ilkley Moor bah´t ´at” to his repatoir which endeared him to many, but probably not the Chorley contingent. The Serena club were helpful and accommodating and I would recommend this venue to any other local society who are looking for a trip away. The course has a reasonable degree of difficulty, some water hazards and is 331 metres longer than Colinas After three days of competition we held our gala dinner and prize presentation at our tour location, the Hesperia Sabinal hotel. Music played, wine flowed and tales were told in a convivial atmosphere courtesy of our event organisers, Bryan Hirst & David Pope. There were prizes for all the contestants, and some wives, with the podium places going to :- 4th Bryan Hirst (83 pts) 3rd Alan Hill (89), 2nd Brian Layden (90) This years champion, with 97 points, congratulations to Nigel Cotton.

This year’s champion, Nigel Cotton

The Rodriguez’s bullet in the 1-0 win at Malaga was priceless in Elche’s bid for survival

SHIP HISPANIOLA GOLF SOCIETY AT THE MAR MENOR At Mar Menor on Monday 12th May 2014. In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this month’s meeting a group of 24 players visited the established course at Mar Menor under the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. For 2014 we have joined forces with the Lo Marabu GS who play their monthly ‘social game’ the same days as us so we both benefit from the cost economies of scale for booking a larger group than would otherwise be the case. The weather forecast was ‘spot on’ with clear blue skies and shorts were the order of the day and the course was in good condition with very fast greens on the outward nine holes but surprisingly slower greens on the inward nine holes. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Karen Matthews – 34 points, 2nd – Steve Sissons – 31 points, 3rd – Darren Holden –

31 points. Nearest the pin winners: Par 3 Mikey, Par 4 Darren Holden, Par 5 Darren Holden We also played a 3/2/1 competition with only 3 points separating all the teams but the winners were Kevin, Hayden, Darren and Danny on 75 points We all returned to the Ship Hispaniola in La Mata for a hearty feed and refreshments prepared by Janet and her team with our thanks. The next fixture is the away trip to Benidorm on 5th and 6th June. Anyone wishing to join our society should contact Grant Goble on 667329772 or better still call in at the bar. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blanca-greenfees.com.
