LOCAL CLUBS DOMINATE NATIONALS National Champions 2014 Photo Carl Eagle Played over a 2 week period, the 2014 Spanish National Tournament lived up to it's reputation for top quality bowling, suitably promoting the sport of green bowls within the country. It was exactly 20 years ago when Almeria hosted the very first tournament, whereas this year, it was the turn of Costa Blanca South to host players from 16 clubs, including Tenerife and Almeria. Early rounds up to the quarter final stage were played at San Miguel, San Luis and Quesada, with the latter club hosting the semis and finals. Because of a drastically reduced number of entrants (301), all rinks and triples matches were played on a round robin basis up to the semis. The finals featured bowlers from 6 different clubs, throwing up a few surprises along the way! Both

mens and ladies rinks final included teams from San Miguel, but neither quite managed a winners medal. Against a Quesada team of Ronnie Cairns, Jason Prokopowycz, Derek Sale & Fred Roberts, a foursome line up of Noel Verity, Don Whitney, Sam Russell & Chris Collier had to settle for 2nd best. A Greenlands outfit including Jan Pocock, Sue Johnson & Sheila Stead, were crossing every digit available, as skip Lin Miller delivered the games final wood, earning them a 1 shot victory over shell shocked Pat McEwan, Carol Rudge, Anne Eagle & Mary Dyer. Tenerife mens trios of Bill Rogerson, Robert and Graham Cathcart performed admirably, but fell just short against an experienced Quesada mens trips team of John Muldoon, Bill Pain & Pete Bonsor. Greenlands were victors over Quesada in the equivalent ladies discipline. Continued on Page 36

Officers from the National Police have caught and arrested two European fugitives, one wanted by the authorities in the UK, the other in Belgium, the first arrested in Benidorm, the second in Torrevieja. Investigators had learnt about the presence of the two men, both in their 40´s, and the existence of extradition and surrender notices. As a result, specialist officers from Alicante established a presence in both towns, in order to locate the two individuals. After just a few days, the location of both men was ascertained. The British national arrested in Benidorm was wanted in connection with at least ten crimes, nine of which were burglary, the other for theft. There were also outstanding reports of potential cases of violence towards women and attempted murder. The second detainee, of Belgian origin, was arrested in the town of Torrevieja. He was part of a criminal organization involved in drug trafficking, acting as a mediator to South America.

FIVE ARRESTS FOR HORSEMEAT SCA M Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested 5 people as suspects involved in a major scam of introducing horsemeat into the food chain with falsified documents declaring it as fit for human consumption. Operation “Cavell” resulted in the search of farms, private farms, slaughterhouses and veterinary clinics in the provinces of Valencia, Asturias, La Coruña, Toledo, Avila, Madrid, Valladolid, Zaragoza and Jaen. The organization deposited horses in different slaughterhouses in Spain, falsifying or altering their identification and disease control documents, in order for their meat to become destined for human consumption. The operation is coordinated by the Judicial Police of Catalonia, supported by other law inforcement agencies, including SEPRONA, the environmental arm of the Guardia Civil, and the French Gendarmerie, as some of the detainees are related to another operation in France in December of last year for similar crimes. Those arrested have been placed in the custody of the courts at Santa Coloma de Farners, Girona, whilst the investigators say that the case is still open and further arrests are not ruled out.

CHANGES TO BIR TH AND DEATH REGISTRATIONS OVERSEAS British nationals living in Spain should note that from Monday 9th June, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is changing the way that it registers the births and deaths of British citizens overseas. The process will gradually be withdrawn from British Consulates in Spain during the rest of 2014. Thereafter this option for British expatriates will be carried out by a central registration unit in the UK. Consular birth registration is an optional service and is only available to those born overseas who have an automatic entitlement to British Nationality at birth. There is no legal requirement for a consular birth registration, and a local birth certificate with a certified translation if necessary should be sufficient for all purposes in the UK including applying for a passport. Similarly there is no requirement for a consular death certificate – a local certificate should be sufficient for winding up the affairs and obtaining probate in the UK. The processing time for registrations will remain the same but applicants will need to allow extra time for documents to be sent to and from the UK. British nationals can find information here on how to apply for a consular birth or death registration. Centralisation of birth and death registration into a single-purpose unit in the UK will allow the FCO to provide a common online application procedure with a credit card payment facility, which will be more efficient and convenient for customers. Centralisation will also enable FCO consular staff to better focus on their primary function of assisting British nationals in distress.

EDUCATION TO INCREASE USE OF TABLETS IN SCHOOLS

Tablets will adapt the education system to the needs and demands arising from the use of new technologies” As the academic year is about to come to a close, the department of education is now considering replacing text books in schools, from fifth grade primary, with electronic tablet computers, for which the parents would have to foot the bill. The proposal has been presented to the teachers unions this week that would allow for a pilot scheme started last year in a few schools to be rolled out across the education network. As with any experimental program, the final approval would lie with the Department of Education, but would then lead to a selection committee being created, formed mostly of head and lead teacher trainers, as well as auditors and monitors to ensure that the process reaches an equal implementation system. Although the parents would have to pay for the tablets, which must also meet minimum characteristics set down by the department, the cost is not too dissimilar to the annual fees paid by many parents for the next batch of textbooks as their children move through the system. Spokesperson for the authority, María José Catalá, explains that the use of tablet computers is a form of “adapting the education system to the needs and demands arising from the use of new technologies”, and although it is still experimental, the department doesn´t rule out being able to provide support for families who may not be able to afford the tablets, in

much the same way as help is sometimes awarded towards textbook costs. Among the benefits for the use of electronic tablets are the fact that they are intuitive; naturally integrate the capabilities that young people develop by using similar devices that follow the same logic; early adaptation of technology integrated into our daily lives; improved digital skills decreasing the rejection of ICTs and improved language skills thanks to features such as voice recognition. The devices also integrate utilities that can assist in the learning process, such as calculators, dictionaries and a calendar, and can also play music and video, thus enriching the multimedia learning capacity for the students, something which printed books cannot do. Tablets also cut down considerably on the amount of weight that children have to carry. Recent studies have indicated that children in Spain may suffer long term damage by carrying too much in their early years, and that even the use of wheeled trolleys can have a detrimental effect on their growth, if not used correctly. The consultation period for approval will last for two weeks. Should the scheme be approved for adoption, the department has vowed to offer training courses, not only for the students and teachers, but also for parents to be able to see how the devices work and the benefits of switching to a digital form of educational progress.

SPAIN IS A EUROPEAN LEADER IN DRUG USE Along with Britain and France, Spain is the European leader in cocaine and cannabis use amongst young people, although the usage is declining, according to annual data published this week by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs. The study warns, however, that the “positive signs” that the use of traditional drugs is declining, the data is counteracted by a threatened increase in “new threats posed by synthetic drugs, including stimulants and new psychoactive substances”, which have a growing presence in the European drug market. An estimated 2.2 million young people, between the ages of 15 and 34 years, used cocaine last year, 1.7% of that age group. Collectively, cocaine use in Spain was more than double the EU average, with 3.6% usage. Usage in the UK stood at 3.3%, Ireland was 2.8% and Denmark 2.4%. At the other end of the scale, cocaine use was hardly noticeable in places such as Greece and Romania, with just 0.2%. Cocaine shipments to Europe come “almost exclusively” from Bolivia, Colombia and Peru. “Cocaine trafficking to Europe appears to occur mainly through the countries of Western and Southern Europe, such as Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, France and Italy”, where 85% of the total 71 tons seized in 2012 were found, according to the report. Cannabis is still the most popular illegal drug for all age groups with an estimated 14.6 million young Europeans consuming the drug last year, around 11.2% of the entire population. Spain ranks in fourth place in terms of use of this drug, with a rate of 17% of the population, with the Czech Republic leading the way with 18.5%, Denmark with 17.6% and France with 17.5%. Once again, at the opposite end is Romania with just 0.6% usage, along with Malta at 1.9% and Greece with 3.2%. The report does note that cannabis use in Spain is the lowest in the last decade”, with Germany, France

and the UK, all showing either stability in consumption or a decline in use. In Denmark, Finland and Sweden however, there is an upward trend in cannabis use. Young Spaniards are also above the EU average in terms of ecstasy use, with 1.4% of the 15 to 34 age group using the drug, compared to 1% of the EU average. The use of amphetamines is also higher at 1.1% compared to the European average of 0.9%. There is some positive news in the report too, as Spain is below the EU average of the number of drug-induced deaths, with 11.4 cases per million people, compared to 17.1 per million average in Europe. The highest rates were recorded in Estonia with 191 per million and Norway with 76 per million people, followed by Ireland with 70 per million inhabitants. The new threat to Europeans is coming from a new breed of synthetic drugs, including Methamphetamine, historically low in Europe and mostly limited to the Czech Republic and Slovakia, seems now to be spreading through the rest of Europe, the report warned. Smoked methamphetamine in crystalline form is also on the increase, with a risk of a possible spread among vulnerable populations disturbing from Southeast Europe, such as Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. The report warns of an increasing the number, type and availability of new drugs in Europe shows no signs of abating. New psychoactive substances are often sold in the market as “legal highs” and occur to mimic the effects of other drugs. New drugs can be produced in clandestine laboratories in Europe. More common, however, are substances obtained in powder form, especially from China and India, where the internet continues to play a key role. Last year alone, the Centre identified 650 websites that sold these substances to Europeans.

VALENCIA HAS FEWER MEDICS THAN NATIONAL AVERAGE As governmental cuts in the health service have finally started to reveal themselves in physical numeric form, data released this week by the Institute of National Statistics shows that the Valencia region is below the national average for the ratio of both doctors and nurses to inhabitants. In total, Valencia has 23,086 Doctors, which equates to 466 doctors per hundred thousand residents, way below the 501 per thousand of the national average. The situation is similar for nurses, where the region´s 25,154 professionals equate to 508 nurses per hundred thousand residents, compared to 537 per hundred thousand as is the national average. In fact, Valencia rates sixth from the bottom of the list in terms of doctor to inhabitant ratio, with Madrid leading the way with 631 per hundred thousand, followed by Aragón with 616. However, at the bottom of the list is Andalucía, with 401 medics per hundred thousand citizens. The statistics also reveal that the total number of registered medical practitioners increased by 1.7% in 2013, a fact that is confirmed in Valencia, where this number increased by 1.18% compared to 2012, increasing the number of licensed physicians in all Valencian provinces.

Despite the below average ratio for nurses, Valencia is fourth in the list in terms of ranking, with Navarra heading the list by some considerable lead, with 961 nurses per hundred thousand, and Murcia is at the bottom with 378 per hundred thousand, considerably below the national average of 537. The field of psychiatry has seen the biggest growth in the last 2 years, with an increase of almost 74% in the number of practitioners since 2012, with 12,404 now practising. The national pharmaceutical association, physiotherapy, dentistry and optometry have all seen growth in the same period.

Yet another familiar Banking name bites the dust

irst Lloyds announced it was pulling out of the Spanish banking market and that it had sold its branches to Sabadell CAM, which upset a huge number of its clients. Now its Barclays turn, Barclays announced last week that it was pulling out of Spain, Portugal Italy and France. Barclays have said that these branches will be moved to a non-core business entity; this will become part of their planned “bad bank" which will eventually sell or close all of the £115bn of non-core operations. "Bad banks" have been used by a number of institutions since the global financial crisis as a way of ring-fencing risky loans and assets. The carve-up will give greater prominence to Barclays' retail operations in the UK, its Barclaycard credit card arm and its African business. "This is a bold simplification of Barclays," said chief executive Antony Jenkins. "We will be a focused international bank, operating only in areas where we have capability, scale and competitive advantage." So for all of you who Bank with Barclays you now know what the

F

bank thinks of its loyal expatriate banking customers, they are placing you in a bad bank, severing their responsibilities to you. My advice to you is if you use Barclays for your day to day banking and are happy leave your account as it is and see if Barclays manage to sell, if they don´t manage to sell and decide to close their branches they will give you notice so you can find an alternative then. If you have cash lump sums sitting with them or investments (that don´t carry hefty redemption penalties) now is the time to consider moving them. It’s not just Barclays; in February this year Norwich and Peterborough Building Society announced it would close its Gibraltar branch at the end of this year. In January this year HSBC Bank International (HBIB) completely closed down its Isle of Man and Guernsey centres for international clients who are based overseas. The list seems to go on and on, the sad truth is as stated in a previous article I wrote in the RTN in February 2014 is: “The main reason for this is that Banks just don´t want or need YOUR money. According to the British press banks and building societies have built up a £130billion war chest of dirt-cheap cash. These intuitions have been stockpiling money and paying little or no interest on it as a result for the foreseeable future they don´t need to pay struggling savers any extra interest or work to keep existing clients.” If you have been or will be affected by the above, there is no time like now to act, if you are unsure as to what is available and what option

is best for you just call me on 658 892 330 or contact me by email christina.brady@blacktowerfm.com. ORIHUELA HAS MOST Q QUALITY FLAGS IN VALENCIA

el along the narrow passage with the cars and truck moving along the road, with considerable risk to safety. Although there are still elements to be completed, such as lowering the pavement to allow mobility access, as well as creating a pedestrian crossing, already the route provides for a much safer passage over this popular route. This bridge, along with the one near the yet to be finished school, had a budget of 809,000 euro, and were funded by local developer Marcos y Bañuls SL, who is also funding the improvements to the paseo maritimo. In response to the question about funding, Guillén pointed out that the government team “would have liked to have a municipal budget for such works”, but constraints do not allow for that to happen. Meanwhile, Scheurer said that both her and the government team were insistent that the money from the coastal developments was spent on the Orihuela Costa, such is the case at Punta Prima.

Following on from the successful acquisition of the Blue Flag awards, the Orihuela Costa has also received the coveted “Q” for quality flag for seven of the coast´s beaches. The councillor for tourism, Rosa Martínez, collected the flags at a ceremony in Valencia last week, confirming the standard of the Orihuela Costa for another year.

With seven “Qualitur” flags flying on the beaches, the Orihuela Costa has more than any other municipality in the Valencia region, with Torrevieja, Benidorm, Valencia, Sagunto and Castellón all winning six. Across the Alicante province there will be 38 “Q” flags flying in the 11 municipalities. Whereas the Qualitur flags recognize clean water measure monitoring to ensure the safety of bathers, sanitation, recreation areas and recreational facilities, as well as the environmental protection measures, they can also be added to the confirmed standards of the Blue Flags, as well as the International certification of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, which have also been awarded to Orihuela.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, along with the Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, accompanied by Bob Houliston from the CLARO political group, all visited the work on renewing the paseo maritimo at Punta Prima on Thursday. With a budget of 140,000 euro, the paving is being replaced along most of the walkway in the Orihuela Costa zone of the area, with new, anti-slip paving stones being installed, which are also sturdy enough to take the weight of the automatic street cleaning machines in order to maintain the appearance in the future. Although there was a delay in starting the work, it is progressing well and should be completed in time for summer, and had been requested by the visiting auditors of the Blue Flag standards, so will also go towards ensuring the accreditation in the future. The delegation also visited the newly opened footbridge over the motorway at La Zenia, one of three new bridges now in place, this one being long requested by the many pedestrians and cyclist who travel along the Villamartin and La Zenia road, who previously had to trav-

HOW THE EUROPEAN VOTE AFFECTS THE PEOPLE OF ORIHUELA

As the dust starts to settle on the outcome of the European elections, opinion is still divided between those who cannot see a problem, and those who are analysing the statistics and presenting them for their own favour. In view of the copious amounts of data available, Bob Houliston from the local C.L.A.R.O. political group has investigated what he thinks the results actually mean at the street level on the Orihuela Costa. Last Sunday’s European Parliament elections in Spain were interesting from many different points of view. Nationally, the Popular Party (PP) was the party which obtained most votes but for the first time since maybe 40 years, the two major parties together, the PP and the Socialist Party (PSOE) failed to get a combined 50% share of the vote. The emergence of new and smaller parties challenged the monopoly which the two big parties have enjoyed for so long, leading many to predict the end of the two party system in Spain. Closer to home, in Valencia, the two major parties obtained more than 50% of the vote between them but new and smaller parties played such an important part that, projected into next year’s regional elections, neither of the two major parties would be able to govern without an alliance. The Popular Party won the highest number of votes but the difference between PP and PSOE narrowed to 7.5% compared to 15% in the 2009 European Parliament elections. In Orihuela, the Popular Party won an apparently impressive 45% of the vote but, in the European Parliament elections in 2009, when the turnout was admittedly 10% higher, their share of the vote was 66%. Compared to 2009, the PP in Orihuela lost over 7,000 votes, equal to a loss of 21%. The Socialist Party vote share in Orihuela on Sunday was 4% less than in 2009. The two major parties which took 94% of the vote in 2009 obtained 68% of the total vote this time. The influence of new and smaller parties reaffirmed their presence in Orihuela where for over 20 years the Popular Party dominated. This loss of the traditional PP monopoly of power in Orihuela already ended in the 2011 municipal elections when, thanks to the impact of C.L.A.R.O in combination with CLR, the PP failed to achieve an absolute majority and a Socialist-Green Party coalition has governed since. The European Parliament elections last Sunday suggest that the days of the

absolute majority of the PP and their monopoly of power in Orihuela are indeed over. The story in Orihuela Costa was distinct. If the turnout for Sunday’s European Parliament elections was a respectable 45% nationally and in Orihuela, in the three voting centres of Orihuela Costa it was only 22%. This turnout level is very low. The number of eligible voters both Spanish (who are automatically registered to vote) and EU non-Spanish was 6,657, some 20% of the estimated 30,000 padron registered adult population. Expressed more dramatically, the total votes cast 1,353, represent only 4.5% of the POTENTIAL voting strength Orihuela Costa is punching way below its weight! The problem is that EU, mainly British and Irish residents, do not make the effort to register to vote, which only requires a visit to the Playa Flamenca office of the Town Hall. The numbers on the voters list may be a little higher for the all important municipal elections next year but, unless a special effort is made, not high enough to give Orihuela Costa a decisive say in the next Orihuela Town Council. The message that it is necessary to register to vote and vote in order to have a say in the way we are governed, has so far unfortunately failed to get home. Unlike in the country as a whole and in Valencia, the two major parties (PP and PSOE) were almost neck and neck in the vote in Orihuela Costa. Compared to Orihuela, where they achieved double the PSOE vote, in Orihuela Costa, the PP only obtained 22 more votes than the PSOE. New and smaller parties obtained over 500 votes, nearly 40% of the total. One reason for the poor performance of the PP in Orihuela Costa may well be that Orihuela Costa voters were critical of the Popular Party for the recent, abrupt dumping of C.L.A.R.O. in December in favour of a pact with Pedro Mancebo’s CLR and the PP were punished accordingly. A technical factor which affected the vote in Orihuela Costa was the appearance of a new voting station in the new nursery school in Lomas

de Cabo Roig. This is the first time that voting took place in this centre and many people do not know it or how to find it. Furthermore, the geographic scope of this centre was strange. People living within a few hundred metres of the Playa Flamenca office of the Town Hall, their traditional voting place, were directed to vote in the nursery school in Lomas de Cabo Roig, miles away. Some attention needs to be given to the location and geographic scope of the voting stations in future elections, beginning with the local elections in May, 2015. But by far the greatest need, if they want to have a

say in the way they are governed, is for the adult, EU mainly British and Irish resident population of Orihuela Costa, to register to vote. NO VOTE, NO VOICE. To hear more about this topic, make sure you are listening to Exite Radio on Monday morning, as Bob Houliston will be joining Mark Nolan at around 10:00, to discuss this and much more from the political world of both Europe and Orihuela. You can tune your radio to 93.1fm on the Costa Blanca, or listen online at www.exiteradio.com.

PRICE WAR AS AIRLINES HIT BACK Recognising the increasing threat of the high speed train between Madrid and Alicante, Spanish airline Iberia Express has launched a pocket friendly fair on the route, at just 39 euro each way between June and September. With 3 daily departures, the price is for a walk-on passenger without check-in luggage, but is the equivalent price of an economy class train

journey. Other low cost carriers also announced a deal this week, offering round trip tickets for under 70 euro, whereas other airlines are currently charging between 90 and 170 euro each way for the service. As the train tickets for the new service were released this week, early bookers were able to take advantage of an even bigger saving, with some tickets being offered up at just 19,99 euro each way. The Spanish airport authority, AENA, had already warned of the severe impact the train service would have on airlines, with a loss of 300,000 passengers between June and December last year, the announcement of faster and more trains would only serve to amplify those losses unless flying became competitive once again. Experts are commenting that the growth in both rail and air passenger numbers is one of the most positive signs of economic recovery displayed, as this is not just comments from politicians eager to convince us that the future is getting brighter, but is the result of direct action by consumers. Either way, with an ever increasing opportunity for travel and a price war already starting, it can only prove better news for those consumers who now have the biggest and fastest choice between the two key areas than ever before.

LAUNCH DATE ANNOUNCED FOR FASTER TRAINS The 15th of June has been set as a day in which history will be made for the Spanish rail network, as the first passenger trains between Alicante and Madrid will travel at speeds of 300 kilometres per hour. Following extensive testing of the line´s safety equipment, train operator RENFE has now released passenger tickets for the new, faster service, and increased the number of trains each day. There will now by 22 trains per day, 11 in each direction, which will provide an additional 500,000 seats per year, an increase of 24% over the current service, what’s more, there will be no price increase to passengers, and the launch has been timed to coincide with one of the busiest in the Alicante area, when the celebrations of San Juan take place. The number of regular seats available on a daily basis will average at 7,100, compared to the current 5,736m with the journey time seeing 15 minutes shaved off, resulting in the shortest journey time taking just 2 hours and 5 minutes. Of the 22 daily services, 18 will be served

by the AVE and the remaining 4 by the ALVIA trains. Since its launch on the 18th of June, 2013, the demand for seats has grown steadily, reaching an average occupancy of 80%. The AVE between Madrid and Alicante, with stops in Villena, Albacete and Cuenca, has reached over 6,000 passengers on certain key days, resulting in an increase in service and capacity to deal with the demand.

OCEAN QUEST STILL LIES DERELICT SIX YEARS AFTER BEING ‘TORCHED’ A £1.5million cruiseliner destined for Spanish waters remains in Britain - SIX years after being torched by an arsonist.

By Andrew Atkinson

This week I visited the scene of where the cruiseliner Ocean Quest remains - in the shallow muddy waters on the edge of Preston Marina in Lancashire. It was back in November 2007 when the Ocean Quest was scheduled for its maiden voyage to Alicante - where it was going to be moored and used as a Charter boat. However, The Ocean Quest - a 73ft vessel - was sank in June 2008 at Preston Marina - as reported in The Leader - where it has remained ever since. The Ocean Quest was a piece of Preston history when unveiled in 2007 as the first boat to be built in Preston in 50 years. It was to be used by its consortium owners - for cruises in the Mediterranean - after four-and-a-half years' work to complete the cruiseliner. Lancashire businessman Graham Alston and his brother Peter, who lives in Spain, were main owners of The Ocean Quest. I was told by Chris Miller, Preston Dock Managing Director that the Ocean Quest was sold on ebay for a paltry sum believed to be £15,000. Despite works being undertaken in recent years The Ocean Quest still remains close to the entrance of Preston Marina, at the mouth of the River Ribble. The photo shows it sitting in muddy waters at low tide.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

A Good Deed for the Day

fter a short lived affair as a cub scout, where I learned to leap out of trees badly, build shelters that collapsed and was never able to light fires by rubbing stones (or was it sticks?) together, as well an assortment of valuable life saving skills. I also learned to be kind and helpful to retired and elderly people; to my young mind, apparently, they liked nothing more than being helped across the road, whether or not they wanted to go. However, I did disappointingly notice that retired folk tended to be a bit mean during those exciting ‘Bob a Job’ weeks’, which thankfully were banned some years ago, being considered as gross exploitation of seven-yearolds. After all, a ‘bob’, which is now five pence in modern money, wasn't really an attractive rate of pay for helping to paint a living room or dig an allotment. All those distant, and mostly fond, memories came flooding back to me this week after an unfortunate incident at the rubbish bins. I was taking our dog, Bella, for her morning walk, when I thought I would walk via the village rubbish bins with a bag of rubbish. Unlike better organised municipalities on the island, which have smart stainless steel hoppers leading to cavernous bins set well below street level, our municipality, which tends to have only an interest in the more prosperous tourist areas, provides smelly open-topped hoppers where all manner of vermin congregate, as well as a unhealthy gang of peo-

A

ple searching through the rubbish trying to find something that they can sell. Times are hard for some people, and I can understand why they do this, but it often leads to arguments and fights, as to who found something of value first. It is a place where Bella and I do not linger for long. I strode over to the bin and threw in my bag of rubbish. It was then that I noticed a small, elderly lady trying to throw a small carrier bag of rubbish into the hopper, which was far too high for her to reach. She was clearly arthritic, and her weak throw meant that her carrier bag fell well short of its target. I picked up her bag and threw it in for her. The elderly lady smiled gratefully and mumbled a ‘Gracias’ and then added something else, which I could not fully understand. I then noticed a second carrier bag in her other hand. I smiled and grabbed the bag from her hand, although I noticed that she did seem to be holding it rather tightly. This time, the old lady looked at me, shook her head and mumbled something in bad Spanish, which I took to be “I can manage”. My cub scout training certainly would not let me take no for an answer when there was an elderly person in need, and so I replied with a smile, adding “De nada” (which loosely translated means “it is nothing”), tossed the second carrier bag into the bin and went on my way, feeling satisfied that I had done my bit to help an elderly person in distress. Akela would be pleased with me. Bella was anxious to continue with her walk and dragged me across the road aiming for the place where she usually likes to run and search for lizards. As I walked passed the hoppers, I noticed the old lady still standing by the bins, pointing and shouting at where I had thrown her carrier bag. I paused as I noticed that someone had climbed into the hopper, retrieved the elderly lady’s second carrier bag and was passing it to her. The dreadful truth slowly dawned on me. I had not only retrieved and thrown the lady’s first carrier bag of rubbish into the hopper, but I had also grabbed her second carrier bag, which probably contained groceries, into the hopper too. I felt both guilt and acute embarrassment as I walked quickly away from the scene, but pleased that the elderly lady was now reunited with her groceries, whilst no doubt complaining about the thoughtless Brit who had thrown her shopping into the bin.

I blame it all on the cub scouts. Although I meant well, next time I will curb my enthusiasm to be helpful to elderly people who seem to be in need. LÍNEA DIRECTA REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially presummer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for dieselengine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. Protecting your eyes from the sun In May, Mike Stone from Specsavers Opticas in Calpe gave an informative presentation about UV and the effects of the sun on our eyes for the members of the University of the 3rd Age Vall de Pop in Murla. This interesting talk gave information to help the members to be able to effectively protect their eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) light radiation. They also tested the attendees’ sunglasses with their UV meter and found that some of them were not giving adequate protection. Mike explains why it is important to think about your eyes in Spain’s strong sun – “UV blocking eye protection is crucial to prevent longterm harm and the development of the following ocular diseases: Cataracts Macular degeneration Eyelid skin cancer Pinguecula - small, yellowish, slightly raised lesions that form on the surface of the white part of the eye and cause irritation. Pterygium - scar tissue that can grow over the surface of the eye

and impair the vision. Photokeratitis— an inflammation of the cornea due to UV expo sure, comparable to sunburn of the very sensitive skin of the eye lids and tissues of the cornea. You may not know that eyes are most at risk when the light hits at an angle, typically between 08.00-10.00 and 14.00-16.00. My advice would be to use photochromic lenses, polarized lenses, sunglasses and tinted lenses which block 100% of ultraviolet A and B radiation at all times of the year and day to fully protect your eyes.” Specsavers Opticas in Calpe and Javea offer a free service to test the UV protection that your sunglasses offer so you can make sure you are protected. They are also raising money for the AmbulanciaParaJavea campaign which is fundraising to buy a specially adapted bus to help the elderly and disabled access medical care and get out of their homes. To find out how you can get involved in the campaign email ambulanciaparajavea@live.com, for more information about Specsavers visit www.specsavers.es.

Country Bowls Report By StJohn Broadhurst Following a two week break for the Spanish Nationals it was back to serious bowling again and on Monday, 26 May the Badgers played host to the Vistabella Greeners in a SABA Harrier league match. The Greeners had certainly coped better with the break than the Badgers, winning on five rinks and also the long game. Well done to our only winning rink of Glynis Broadhurst, Bryan Kirk, Trevor Cox 20-16. Overall shots Badgers 80 (2pts) Greeners 138 (12pts). Wednesday, 28 May saw the Clarets entertain the Quesada Tigers in a VCL match. The Tigers certainly roared loudly, winning three of the five disciplines and the long game. The winning rinks were: Trips: Andy White, Bryan Kirk, Dot Davies 18-8. Rinks: Sandra McIlroy, Maurice Cass, Joel Fernandez, Ben Noke 17-14. Overall shots Clarets 67 (4pts) Tigers 90 (8pts). The final game of the week was an away match in the SABA Harrier league on Friday, 30 May for the Badgers against La Siesta Hornets and after an enthralling match the Badgers came out on top, winning four rinks, drawing one and winning the long game. Picking up the points were: Jo Wright, Bryan Kirk, John Wright 20-18. Andy White, Billy Price, John Palmer 18-15. Doreen Statham, Del Gunning, Karen Kirk 29-11. Glynis Broadhurst, Dot Davies, Trevor Cox 22-12. Carole Donnellan, Dave Williams, Dennis Birkett 15-15. Overall shots Badgers 119 (11pts) Hornets 89 (3pts). And finally I would like to mention one of our ladies, Carole Donnellan, who in her first appearance in the Spanish Nationals made it through to the Quarter Finals in the Ladies Singles, where she was beaten by the losing finalist Peta Rhodes. Well done Carole, a great achievement. www.countrybowlsclub.com

‘NATIONALS’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE This time, champions S Johnson and L Miller were accompanied by Marilyn Fryatt, as they played well to beat Mel Highland, Peta Rhodes & Lisa Bonsor. Peta and Lisa gained revenge in the ladies pairs, beating Greenlands Jan and Lin by 1 shot. An all Quesada mens pairs final, saw P Bonsor & B Pain beat R Cairns & F Roberts. Finally, an epic mens single final, resulted in P Bonsor beating Mal Hughes of San Luis, whilst Horadada's Ann Allen took the ladies single crown, when she beat P Rhodes. Both Pete and Ann will now go on to represent Spain in next years champion of champions final. The nationals committee of chairman John Muldoon, and members Bob Donnelly, Deirdre Leeming, plus Veronica & Derek Sale, have expressed thanks to the following tournament sponsors: Spanish Life Properties SL, CS Bowls, Ibex Insurance, Dales Sports and Winning Express. They also thanked The Leader Newspaper for producing the excellent event brochure, and for sponsoring the tournaments most valuable player trophy, which was deservedly won by Lin Miller of Greenlands Bowls Club.

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB ..... by Paul Thomas

Nationals Rinks Runners Up. Photo Carl Eagle NATIONAL’s congratulations to all who got through to the semi finals and the finals these people were Ann Eagle Ladies singles, Carol Rudge and Mary Dyer Ladies pairs. Ladies rinks Pat McEwan, Carol Rudge, Ann Eagle and Mary Dyer played a very hard final against Greenland’s, going into the last end one up, they were holding two, when Lynne Miller, Greenland’s Skip, came in with an extremely wide last wood, it hit a stray wood, shot across, hit another wood, then went into the head taking out our shot wood, moved the jack and San Miguel went two down. They lost the rinks championship by one shot. The ladies were gutted. Men’s pairs semis Jim Jarvie and Drew Gerrard, Men’s trips Noel Verity, Don Whitney and Chris Collier, Men’s rinks also reached the final Noel Verity, Don Whitney, Sam Russell and Chris Collier. but came up against a good Quesada team, who had the advantage of playing on their own green. Well done to

our finalists, and well done to all the teams who reached the semi finals. SABA SPITFIRE LEAGUE Christians played at home to Quesada Blenheims we were hoping for a good win against the top of the league as we are fighting for top place but only managed a draw points for 7 points against 7 shots for 98 shots against 105. San Miguel Deputies played Monte Mar Gents at home in the VCL on Wednesday evening ending up with 10 points to 2 win. The singles were Pat McEwan 21-16. Cliff Plaisted 21-10. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB A welcome return to the leagues commenced with a home match against Greenlands Glosters, always a tough opponent, but despite some good bowls the Glosters went away with 4 rinks to El Rancho’s 2. Wednesday found El Rancho being entertained by La Siesta, in the Valencia Champions League and although playing well, were beaten by 4 rinks to 1. Ladies Singles: Irene Mangan 21-10. Mens Singles: Ron Odell 10-21. Pairs: Margaret Odell and Alex Morrice 9-25. Trips: Jim Gracie, Ron Edwards and David Whitworth 12-33. Rinks: Carol Smith, Brian Taylor, Shirley Edwards and Mike Smith 14-19.

On Friday we were away to La Marina Pilots and had a good match in excellent company, both teams taking 3 rinks with El Rancho taking the overall shots by one. Graham Day, Ron Edwards and Alex Morrice 9-23. Malc Elmore, Shirley Edwards and Irene Morrice 15-19. Rob Clark, Ron Odell and Malc Sykes 18-13. Jim Gracie, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 25-10. HORADADA BOWLS CLUB Firstly, let me, along with many others, congratulate one of Horadada’s woman players for winning in the Spanish Nationals last week, to become the Ladies Singles Champion 2014. Ann Allen has played brilliantly throughout the games, and well deserves this title. (see her photo on page 36) Let’s hope Ann is not so exhausted after all those games played, she has a hard time playing league games again. Unfortunately, Horadada’s first league game followed the next day. After a short break for the Spanish Nationals games to be played, the Harriers League resumed on Monday 26th May. The Horadada Hawks were playing away to San Luis Mosquitoes. Unfortunately We did not do as well as our previous results, perhaps the break upset our momentum. Still, 5 points away from home is not to be sneezed at. Coming away with two wins and a draw, thanks to; John Bailey, Mike Kirby and Barry Evans. 18 - 10, Kay Griffiths, Roy Thompson and

by John Bailey

Tony Burchall. 18 - 17, Wayne Jackson, Roy Collins and John Simpson. 17 - 17. Result therefore; Horadada Hawks 5 points, 91 shots. San Luis Mosquitoes 9 points, 107 shots. This result slips us into second place in the league table, 2 points behind Vistabella Greeners. On Friday 30th May the Hawks have a Bye. So we will be playing catch up in our next game, playing the Country Bowls Badgers on their Green in Valle del Sol, on the 6th June. On Wednesday 28th May, Horadada played away to Greenlands Mimosa, in the VCL 2014. Again, not a good result for the Horadada team, loosing all their games to come away with no points. Lets hope this run of poor results on our League games, is short lived and we get back into a winning form again.

VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB ..... Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice After the quiet of the last two weeks we returned to league action. The Greeners came back with a bang while the Fairways had a more mixed week. Mondays SABA games saw good results for both teams. The Greeners travelled to Country Bowls and had an encouraging 12 points to 2 win by 138 shots to 80. Jenny Chaplin, Brian Pointon and Dave Chaplin led the way closely followed by Tony Sambrook, Gordon Gowland and Helen Marshall, Bernard Ledger, Audrey Sinclair and Allan Sinclair, Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Pat Rafferty and Lesley Prockter, Pauline Rafferty and Brian Prockter. The Fairways entertained San Luis Wellingtons and won by 10 points to 4 and 108 shots to 85. Our biggest win came from Gail Willshire, Andy Leggatt and Fred Willshire, with good wins also from Beryl Regan, Arthur Brown and Maggie Furness, Lynne Bishop, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee and Lin and Charlie Watkins and Jenny Bowman. On Friday the Greeners went one better with a 14 points to nil win against Emerald Isle Vulcans by 125 shots to 69, Jenny Chaplin, Brian Pointon and Dave Chaplin had another good win as did Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Pat Rafferty, Tony Sambrook, Gordon Gowland and Helen Marshall, Bernard Ledger, Audrey and Allan

Sinclair, Lesley Prockter, Pauline Rafferty and Brian Prockter and our final win came from Rosemarie Savage, Geoff Paylor and Barry Norris. The Fairways travelled to Monte Mar to take on the Torro’s and following a couple of expensive last ends we lost out on two of the six rinks, to give the Torro’s a 9 points to 5 victory by 113 shots to our 89. Our two wins came from Tony French, Les Barber and Ian Kenyon and Lynne Bishop, Dane Howard and Eric Bishop, Lin and Charlie Watkins and Jenny Bowman looked to be on course for a victory but a storming last end from their opponents cut them back to a draw. In the middle of the week we resumed VCL action with a visit to Quesada to take on a very strong Quesada team and in some ways we were perhaps not too surprised to only come away with 3 points to Quesada’s 9. Our only win came from Beryl Regan and Barbara and Arthur Brown in the trips while Neil and Sandra Burrows managed a draw in the pairs. We have another busy schedule next week so let’s hope for some strong performances.

Watch your stomach going up and down as you breathe trying not to use your chest muscles. Make breathing out longer than breathing in. Close your eyes. Think about your feet, wriggle your toes then keep them perfectly still. Think about your ankles and feel the relaxation run past them, into your knees and through your thighs. Feel the relaxation run up through your body and into your shoulders. It runs down your arms and into your hands. Wriggle your fingers and then hold them perfectly still. Move your head gently from side to side to relax your neck muscles, relax your face. Place your tongue on the bottom of your mouth and behind your teeth. Remain perfectly still and stay there as long a time as you wish to relax. Understanding the feeling of relaxation will allow you to ask for them when you find there is the need and after just a few short weeks of following this routine method, you will be able to find the feelings, which allow you to overcome stress. You should practise daily and stay in “relax mode” for up to 20 minutes per session. A relaxed mind is a controllable mind and this is only available in partnership with a relaxed body. Be relaxed, be patient, be tolerant, be a winner. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY ..... By Mike Chapman Having been away for much of this week enjoying the delights of Cuenca the report this week will be somewhat truncated. The first game of the week on Monday was a Mulligan which was won with a magnificent 42 pts by Lindsay Forbes who piped John Wheeler in second place on a count back. In third place with 38 pts was Joe Rothery beating the unlucky John Robertson missing out on the prizes also on a count back. On Wednesday we held our usual weekly Stableford Competition although there was one delayed game played in the Singles Match Play Knockout competition which saw Phil Herrington book his place in the semi-finals. Unfortunately the greens are undergoing maintenance work and were covered in sand which made putting a bit of a lottery and therefore it was decided that the scores would not be taken into account for handicap purposes. It appears that the ladies faired better in the poor playing conditions as the results were as fol-

lows: Cat 1. 1st. Olga Douglas 38 pts 2nd. Liz Robertson 36 pts 3rd. Tom Hardie 35 pts Cat 2. 1st. Brian Dent 38 pts 2nd. Carole Wheeler 36 pts (c/b) 3rd. Barry Holtham 36 pts 2's Club. John Wheeler, Tom Hardie, Olga Douglas, Barry Holtham On Friday we played a 1-2-3 or Waltzer with one score counting on the first hole, two on the second and three on the third and so on throughout the round. Although the greens were still sandy putting was a little more true compared to Wednesday and one team were head and shoulders above the rest winning the contest by no less than 9 points. The margin was so great that other teams were wondering whether they were playing the same game. The winning team with 91 pts was Mike Chapman, Joe Rothery, Brian Humpheyson and the returning Heinz Lei who played particularly well scoring two birdies and several pars amassing 40 pts on his own.

ORANGE TREE GS AT SAURINES Once again this newly formed golf society met to play its fortnightly society event. This week we had one of our biggest ever turn out of members and guests just showing that this little friendly golf society is going from strength to strength. Thank you all for making this society one of the best within Cabo Roig. On arrival at the course we were once again met with lovely weather. Plus we were once again made very welcome by the staff of one of the best courses on the Costa, if only the facilities could be improved this would be one of the best. This time around with the high number of players we decided to play a pairs better ball stableford competition, allowing all members to partake and also having a bad hole. We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree Bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig for the presentation and lovely snacks and drinks. Thanks to Chris, Nigel, Lilly, Hannah and Viv for providing these and the wonderful welcome also. Winners of this weeks event was Billy Wilson and Willie (not rhyming slang) with a score of 45 points, 2nd were Chris Blown and Dave Eadington (who will be off a new handicap next time) with 43 points on countback, 3rd were Martin Lowe and Mick Riley also with 43 points and 4th were Kevin Wenn and Digger Digby with 42 points. NTP´s went to Nigel Cawthra on hole 7, Dave Eadington on holes 10 & 18. Unfortunately the results of our previous event were not published so the winners from Tuesday 13th May at Riquelme were, 1st Pete Cowan with 33 points, 2nd Chris Blown with 32, 3rd Nigel Cawthra with 29 and 4th Andy Shuttle with 28. NTP´s went to Chris Blown on hole 1, Andy Shuttle 6, Dave Eadington 11 and Kevin Wenn on 15. The next Orange Tree Golf Society event is on the 10th June at La Serena. Which will be the annual Ian Cawthra memorial trophy, with defending champions Dave Naylor and Ken Farrow. All golfers of any standard are welcome to join us on that day and will be made most welcome into the society. I also truly hope all golfers who remember Ian will partake in this event and help us remember his spirit of life and the love of the game of golf. Plus help us raise some much needed money for charity. Names can either be placed on the restaurant notice board or by phoning on 965 32 3235 or on orangetree@Hotmail.es www.orangetree-caboroig.com All players please meet at The Orange Tree bar and restaurant on the Monday night prior (9th June) between 5 - 6pm to pay your fee plus know the competition and draw.

IT’S NOT QUITE OVER YET! MIRANDES.........0 HERCULES..........1 LAS PALMAS..0 REAL MURCIA..1 Local teams Hercules and Real Murcia are BY JOHN finishing the season fighting for their lives, but at opposite ends of the table: one to stay MCGREGOR in league 2A and the other to be promoted out of it (upwards) into La Liga. Although it still looks inevitable Hercules will drop down into Segunda B and the regional leagues, the Alicantinos put up a tremendous performance away at Mirandes of Leon and Castille to at least give them faint mathematical hope with one game to go. On 45 points Hercules are still three behind 2nd bottom Rael Jaen, Deportivo Alaves and Girona are on 48, and Real Madrid II on 49. This has been a very close-fought competitive season in 2A: from Cordoba in sixth place on 60 points down to Mirandes in 16th just outside the drop zone on 50 points, only 10 points separate 10 teams where a win is everything, but very difficult to sustain. Just like Hercules a terrific 1 – 0 win away at Las Palmas gave Real Murcia an excellent chance of the play-offs. The Murcians now lead the contenders by one point from Barcelona II who can’t go up, Sporting Gijon on 60 points by two and Cordoba on 60 points by three. Also on 60 points are Recreativo Huelva and Las Palmas. It’s all coming down to the last game of the season! Next Saturday all the final matches will be played at 18.30: for Hercules there is a must-win against Barcelona II to even level it out, but the blue and whites have an infinitely worse goal difference then the others. There is also a fascinating who-dares-lose-goes-down encounter between Rael Jaen and Deportivo Alaves. Girona are at home to already-promoted Deportivo La Coruna. Up near the top Real Murcia can control their own destiny if they beat Real Madrid II (the Bernabeu’s ‘B’ team to consolidate their position in the play-offs, this a great attempt to get back in La Liga after sev-

LO ROMERO MONDAY 26th MAY Due to Hollow tinning we changed our normal outing day from Wednesday 28th to Monday 26th this month. This did not deter members as 24 Players descended upon the course. With a good weather forecast ahead of us we set out to conquer a course that most players had not visited for several years. I have to say the course was in great condition from tee's to fairways to greens. With all but one par 3 above 160 meters could it be a day of missed greens and no presentation of the Vino ? After a poor run of games, finally Mr Stirfry took Jake to the cleaners! "John 3 putt" waived the white flag from as early as the 2nd green! No bones this month !! Another regular prize winner, "Tony 2 shots" is finding it a little tough now that his handicap is slowly reducing the "2 shot status" !!! The usual individual duels were waged before the off. After the round most if not all players commented on what a great course After the round we returned to the "Clubhouse" (Sportsman Bar, Quesada) and a lovely feast served by Ron & Yo and on to the presentation with the winners as follows : Overall Winner: David Gray 38 pts Runner Up : Andy Trefry 36 pts, Best Front 9 : Ronald Marshall 21 pts Best Back 9 : Ian Faulkner 19 pts (Lowest H/cap). NTP's: 5th Andy Trefry, 7th David Gray, 12th and 15th Ian Faulkner. Most Golf Award : John De-Vere Prizes donated by : Sportsman Bar, Harry''s Bar, The Club & Jake the Barber Many thanks to all. LO MARABU GOLF SOCIETY AT PERALAJA

For this month’s meeting a group of 26 players visited the established course at La Peraleja taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Despite recent reports of the poor condition of the course we found it to be in generally good condition allowing for the on-going problems on five fairways but the greens were excellent considering that the were only hollow tined a few weeks ago. We were informed that the course will undertake major repair work on the fairway at the end of May 2014 and we look forward to playing this course again when in excellent condition. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Winston Blackwood - 35 points 2nd – John Chatham - 35 points 3rd – Dave Bensley – 34 points

ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY ALICANTE GOLF – 27th MAY 2014 Our 3rd visit to this delightful course and it was in excellent condition and there was a lot of greens TLC going on. Due to the tinning of the greens were a tad slow and not easy to read but they did not deter our talented members. With the exception of just two players the lowest score was 29 points and the highest 39 points by Rodney Smith. Welcome to your new handicap Rod!! One of our members had the luck of the Irish with him when his superbly struck tee shot on the Par 3 17th was arrowing for the hole when it ricocheted off the flagstick and into a bunker, Joe McGrath’s colour came back in the knowledge that his wallet was secure. RESULTS - GOLD CATEGORY 1st Rodney Smith 39 pts,2nd Seamus Martin 36 pts, 3rd Ivie Davies 34 pts, 4th Les Yates 32 pts on c/b, 5th Alan Moody 32 pts SILVER CATEGORY - 1st Geoff Wild 36 pts, 2nd Ron Nicholson 35 pts, 3rd Mick Hithersay 33 pts, 4th Ken Hopkins 30pts, 5th Pete Nicholls 25 pts NEAREST PINS - Hole 3: Ron Swift, Hole 6: Ivie Davies, Hole 8: P Daggert, Hole 12: Dom Downey, Hole 15: Dom Downey, Hole 17 R Corbally LONGEST DRIVE: Alan Moody.
