CHIRINGUITOS DEL SOL ARE GO! At the end of last week and into the weekend, an army of workers took to the beaches of Orihuela Costa, to start building the beach bars and relaxation areas that will be available to us all throughout the summer. After controversy, complaint, threats and discussions, the contract for providing beach based services on the Orihuela Costa was finally signed this week, with the company Chiringuitos del Sol being awarded the work. In the early hours of Friday morning, immediately after the contract was signed, the workers started building the infrastructure. Their first priority was for safety, installing buoys along one the beach of Cabo Roig, where a tragedy occurred some years ago when a boat struck a young bather, with the new system already in place to keep boats away from the coastline, thus keeping the beach area safer.
There had been a delay in awarding the contract, as well as criticism over the inclusion of quality requirements, to ensure that the company providing the service was of the highest possible standard. A number of companies had been excluded from the tender process as they didn´t meet the requirements set out in the tender. More recently, it was discovered that the company which did meet all of the requirements had an outstanding amount due to the town hall of around 880,000 euro, which the town hall had failed to invoice to cover previous contracts many years ago. It had been wrongly reported by some Spanish and English papers, fuelled by the political opposition, that this was a debt, and therefore excluded the company from bidding, but this was never the case on account of the money never having been invoiced, a matter which caused the current government to delay the process further whilst the matter was clarified and finallycorrected. Continued from Page One Once a request was made for the first instalment the company in question made the payment last week, handing over more than a half a million euro for services dating back to 2006. Neither the previous government of Monica Lorente, nor the previous Councillors for the Coast, Bob Houliston and then Pedro Mancebo, were apparently aware that this money was ever due to be claimed. The amounts due for the more recent contracts will also be cleared, once the agreed timeframe for making those payments, which is now in place, has been made. It is also true that there was a further delay caused by the administrative process, which the current Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer of the Los Verdes Green Party in Orihuela described as “very disappointing”, whilst also accepting what many believe is the norm that in Spain, many things take longer than one might hope. The town hall has been operating on antiquated, paper based systems for decades, and it is hoped that these delays will also start to reduce as the new electronic system spreads through the town hall departments. In fact, an example of this was seen when Scheurer herself finalised the signing of the documents this week. Up until two months ago, once everything was in place and set up, the councillor involved would have then had to drive to Orihuela city to sign the final phase of the contract, which would of course take some time, and may well have added another day to the process. However, whilst attending a presentation in the Orihuela Costa Civic Centre on Thursday, Scheurer received the documents electronically and securely, and she was able to sign and return them within a matter of moments, electronically, proving how the process can be speeded up, once everybody is used to using the system. Once that the contract was awarded, the workers sprang into action, and as Thomas Herteux from Chiringuitos del Sol explained to The Leader, “Every single employee is committed to make sure that we all do the very best we can to fulfil the service over the next few years”. In fact, with their track record in providing the service already a testament to that, as well as the fact that the company prides itself on the quality standards it has achieved, the ISO 9001, ISO
LEADER
14001, as well as the “Q” for quality award. Although it is likely to take a few weeks for the beach bars to be fully operational, Thomas also explains how things are now “more complicated because of the very late start”, but they are already planning lots of new features which will start to be installed once the initial equipment is in place. One of the most exciting developments which will appear soon will be a new safe and locker system, a pioneering development from Belgium, which will be tested on La Zenia beach. Thomas explained how the security system works much like a cash machine, with valuables locked away in a secure manner, and as a bonus, the system can also provide it’s users with a free wi-fi access whilst on the beach. In fact, wi-fi access is something else that will be developed in the future, with wi-fi zones planned on many of the beaches, which will also allow visitors to use a mobile application that the company is developing, hopefully set for release this summer, which will provide information such as the weather, sea temperature and conditions, and even the availability of sun loungers. Many of the other proposals are subject to obtaining permission from the beach authority, but there is no doubt that the popular beach volleyball competition will return, as well as the Latin and Flamenco dance nights, incentives for keeping the beaches clean, a water playpark and even the possibility of massage tables with qualified professionals on hand. In addition, the company will have a mechanical digger available at all times, to ensure the beaches are kept in pristine condition, which will also be available should there be any issues such as the weather related problems as seen on the beaches in previous years. As Thomas concluded, “We will try to do the best we can to bring loads of fun, the best food and drinks and the highest standards to Orihuela”, to which there is no doubt that with the contract finally awarded, the company running the service is of the highest standard available, and so, the services provided on the beaches of Orihuela will be the envy of many of the beaches of Spain, setting Orihuela aside as a premiere resort where quality and commitment are standard.

FOURTEEN LOCAL COUNCILLORS CULLED IN CENSUS CLEAN UP As Torrevieja falls below the 100,000 population threshold they seem set to lose two councillors from their government
s further details come to light regarding the cleaning of the census figures by the Institute of National Statistics, the aftermath of the drop of numbers is set to have serious repercussions on the amount of council representation in the Vega Baja area. In total, there will be 14 council posts removed from the local governments affected by the clean up, as tens of thousands of residents are wiped off the census, mostly foreign nationals who are believed to have either moved away, or, in some cases, died. One of the most serious locations affected is Torrevieja, where losing 15,000 registered residents puts it way below the 100,000 threshold, resulting in a considerable drop in the amount of money the town hall receives from both residential taxes and from the governments. Now, as a result of the cull there, they are set to lose 2 councillor posts, dropping from 27 elected positions to 25. Los Montesinos will lose 2 councillors, dropping from 13 to 11, and Jacarilla, also set to lose 2, will
A
drop from 11 to 9. San Fulgencio will lose 4, going down from 17 to 13 councillors, and Rojales will also lose 4, dropping from 21 to 17. In Orihuela, where the population has also dropped, the political situation is unchanged, and they will not lose any council seats as a result of their drop, where the cull will have the least serious impact. Quite how these council posts will affect the elections in May will remain to be seen, and although the revenue income for these locations will be considerably reduced, the costs in employing these 14 councillors will be a saving, although not of equal terms. Overall, the outcome of this audit has shown how crucial it is to be registered on the padr贸n, as the consequences are serious for every resident who may suffer as a result of years of imbalance. There will no doubt be numerous campaigns to try to encourage more people to register, but however the individual town halls choose to dress up their attempts, the important fact is the same, that registration on the padr贸n is vital.

OFFSHORE OIL EXPLORATION FOR ALICANTE DESPITE PROTESTS
The mayor of Valencia, Rita Barbera, said that whilst she will oppose any the exploration for oil just off the Valencian coast she said that "there is no reason to refuse the activity providing it is carried out in the area between the Gulf of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Barbera gave her reply when she was asked about the presence of the boat Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior in the port of Valencia and their protest against the start of oil exploration in the Mediterranean. The mayor said that during the Socialist government of Zapatero she met with a company which was seeking permission to prospect in four or five sites of the Mediterranean, one of them just "three or four miles from the Beach of El Saler”. At that time permission was not granted because ministers felt that it would cause a serious deterioration in the stability of the seabed because one of the forms of extraction would involve ‘fracking’. In the end the company withdrew it’s application as they understood the effect that their drilling might cause on the much needed tourist industry, she said. "But now” the mayor said, “more toward the Gulf
of Valencia and the Balearic Islands - I think there is no reason to refuse the requests so that we might confirm one way or the other if there is another kind of wealth to be had locally. However if there was any threat to our shores, I would still oppose it now as I did then, "she added. Meanwhile in the Port of Valencia Greenpeace has launched their campaign against oil exploration in the Mediterranean. According to informed sources, the crew of the Greenpeace flagship has warned of the dangers posed by oil projects which are to be carried out in waters off the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Alboran Sea and the Gulf of Valencia. Until 15 June, The Rainbow Warrior will call at the ports of Valencia, Ibiza and Mallorca to publicise the fact that oil "is not necessary to ensure the world’s power supply and that a one hundred percent sustainable and renewable source is already available." Greenpeace volunteers will also conduct an information campaign on the state of the oceans and their fish stocks, as well as measures to be taken to protect Marine life.

GRAN ALACANT BRIDGE FUNDING APPROVED The town hall team of Santa Pola has finally secured investment to carry out maintenance work on the bridge over the N-332 which connects the urbanisation of Gran Alacant to the road network. A budget of 532,436 euro allocation was unanimously approved by the government team, which will go towards the much needed work. The work is likely to commence in September, after the summer rush, as the councillor for works, Loreto Serrano explained, “the work is expected in the autumn, once traffic has dropped”, as to do the work in summer would be of “maximum inconvenience” for road users. It was in June of last year that the government unanimously agreed to conduct a study into the costs for the work, which will now not only become a reality by the end of the year, the budget is 60,000 euro less than the original estimate. Serrano continued to explain that “The project will be built with funds from the City of Santa Pola, fulfilling the election commitment that the council had with the citizens”.
GUARDAMAR PARKING METERS RETURN TO TOWN Visitors to the coastal town of Guardamar may need a pocket full of change from this week, as paid parking restrictions return for the summer. The pay and display machines are back in place in the town and are active between the 15th of June and the 15th of September. Although there are some exceptions, the basic timetable for operation is from 10:00 in the morning until 20:00 in the evening in the blue zone areas.

COUNCIL TO SPEND 18,000 EURO ON GUARDAMAR CASTLE The Ministry of Culture has awarded a grant of 18,000 to undertake improvement and maintenance works in Guardamar Castle.
The project involves the consolidation of the outer wall, clearing up of the internal areas, restoration of the solid flooring and replacement of the front door to the grounds. Councillor for Heritage, Jesus Huertas, said that this shows more evidence that the government team is continuing its policy of maintaining the region’s important archaeological sites. “We want to provide the best image of our attractions going into this summer season is when there will be far more visitors to our town." The Guardamar Castle is just one of the many local buildings declared to be of Cultural Interest, first erected in the late thirteenth century by Alfonso X the Wise and continuing to be a stronghold of the town until its destruction by earthquakes in 1829.

AGE CONCERN MAKE GENEROUS DONATION TO THE ORIHU ELA COSTA REA DING POINT When different associations come together to help others, it is a testament to how good will and consideration is still very much alive, as many strive to help those in need. Those considerations came to light this week, when members of Age Concern who operate on the Orihuela Costa presented the Reading Point at the Civic Centre with a huge number of audio books, and a piece of electronic equipment which will help the visually impaired to enjoy reading once again.
Numerous boxes of cassettes were delivered, all original and all in near perfect condition, that the volunteers of Age Concern had been collecting. They handed them to another group of volunteers, the ones who give up their time to provide all of the necessary facilities of the reading point for the coastal residents to enjoy.
Everything from classic literature to classic comedy, as well as some modern greats were in the collection, which are not only available for lenders who may have difficulty reading, audio books are also extremely popular amongst the many fans who simply put them on in the background whilst carrying out other functions, either around the home, at the beach, and even in some case, whilst at work. In addition to the books, Age Concern also donated a “Smart View 3000”, an electronic assistant reading device which uses a video camera and lens to magnify items onto a screen. Whatever it is that needs to be amplified, this equipment can display it on the screen, allowing those who might struggle, even because of the eyes getting a little older, to read everything in crystal clear text. Costing thousands of pounds to buy, the equipment was donated to Age Concern, who immediately thought that the best place to benefit would be the reading point, thus allowing more people to take advantage of a piece of equipment not available in many other similar places. Attending the centre to oversee the delivery, the Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, no only praised the generous donation from both Age Concern and the people who gave the items in the first place, but also the work of the volunteers in the centre, pointing out how it is “run entirely by volunteers, with no town hall staff involved”, and thus is operated at the minimum cost to the municipality, for the maximum benefit to the residents. Since opening its doors to the residents of Orihuela, the reading point has continued to steadily grow in interest and membership, now boast-
ing 83 fully signed up users of the library facility. The centre still needs more volunteers however, in order to cope with the increasing demand, so if you have some time to spare and would like to assist in this multinational community based initiative, call into the town hall or the reading point and ask for information. As the summer is about to take hold, much like most municipal buildings, the centre will be closing from the 20th of June until the 9th of September, but that will give you plenty of time to consider either helping out in the centre, or just becoming a member and benefitting from a huge range of books, both written and in audio format, an archive of magazine in digital form, language learning course, information leaflets and more, in a centre which has now become one so important to many of the residents on the Orihuela Costa. Age Concern operate a weekly “drop-in” facility at the Orihuela Costa town hall, every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 until 13:30, to answer any questions you have about life in Spain, to help in any way they can, and to recruit more volunteers and donations, whilst tirelessly serving the senior generations of the Orihuela Costa.

NO INCREASE IN NATIONAL POLICE IN TORREVIEJA The new office for dealing with immigration and residential papers by the National Police has opened on calle Arquitecto Larramendi in Torrevieja, albeit not with the promised increase in staff. The office is covered by one inspector, two police officers and two assistants, the exact same number as when the office was located near the windmill on the plaza del Molino. It was in July of last year that the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, met with officials at the site in order to finalise plans for the new office, designed to provide “comprehensive care to both foreign and Spanish citizens”. The new office promised around three
times the amount of space over the old one, and at the time the announcement was made that this would also allow for staffing to be “doubled” at the centre, as well as being hailed as an important move for international residents in the area, who will no longer have to travel to Elche or Alicante for processing their NIE applications. Despite the obvious cost in the move, quite why the staffing has not been increased is yet to be announced, but with the threat of Torrevieja about to potentially have 15,000 residents wiped from the census, the long promised building of a full and functioning National Police station in the city is looking like an ever increasingly distant broken promise.
TORREVIEJA POLICE ASK FOR DIALOGUE TO BE OPENED The syndicated unions of the Local Police in Torrevieja have announced that they have approached the Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, with a view to opening dialogue between the two sides and trying to resolve the long running disputes between the officers of the force and the town hall. The group, who represent 80% of the workforce, want to make their complaints and claims clear, so as to avoid any further ambiguity in their attempts to resolve such matters as shift pattern changes which have left the city without police coverage at times, as well as holidays and legally required breaks between shifts. A number of officers have staged protests during the monthly plenary meetings, as they try to encourage open dialogue, some of these protests have met with disciplinary action and threats of fines, thus aggravating the matter further. The officers have also hit back at suggestions that they are operating a “work to rule” policy, saying that it is not the case, whereas they have been blamed for taking prompt action against illegally parked vehicles and urban infractions against bars and restaurants, which some see as a violation and abuse of their powers, whilst others, including the officers, see it as them simply upholding the law and fulfilling their duties as police officers.
LIFEGUARDS TO COVER PEAK SEASON Torrevieja has started life guard services on the beaches of the city this week, with the Cruz Roja operating the 450,000 euro service, covering the dates between June and September. For the peak season, there will be 75 life guards operating from 26 surveillance points, which will reduce to 44 people in the lower end of the season. In Orihuela, the delay in offering the service to tender after the original contractor pulled out has also resulted in a delay in the award and commencement of the service I the municipality, but the final legal process is now continuing, with the service looking set to start just a week late, around the 21st of June, then continuing to cover Easter next year and summer of 2015, with a maximum value of 325,000 euro.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS COMPLAIN OVER PROPOSED ENFORCEMENT OF ENGLISH Unions representing both pilots and air traffic controllers are collectively expressing concerns over safety after it was announced that a law was to be introduced which effectively banned communications between aircraft and control centres in Spanish, In line with international standards, The Spanish aviation agency, AESA, has already issued a formal request to airlines to implement English as the standard language for communication in civil aviation activities. As a result, the unions are claiming that enforcing the rule can “reduce situational awareness of crews and Spanish pilots”, and, more seriously, could “reduce levels of safety”. The unions also claim that Spanish is recognised by the civil aviation authority, as has been the case since its creation in 1944.
The letter of protest from controllers and pilots has been sent to the Director General of Civil Aviation, Ángel Luis Arias, and the director of AESA, Isabel Maestre. Recent developments in the operation of Spanish air space has resulted in a number of control towers being operated by mostly native English controllers, including Alicante, when the operation was franchised to a private company as part of plans for creating a single European sky.

POUNDLAND COMING TO SPAIN GUARDIA OFFICER Poundland, Europe’s largest single-price value general merchandise retailer by both sales and by number of stores, today announces plans to extend its operations into Spain in the next financial year. The initial plan is to open up to 10 shops under the Dealz brand over a two year period and to use the experience and insight from the first phase of stores as a platform for further rollout. Poundland first entered Europe in September 2011 opening two stores in the Republic of Ireland. Trading under the Dealz brand, the estate has grown rapidly to a 31 store operation which was profitable in its first full year of operation, has already delivered a positive return on investment and has significant growth opportunities ahead. Jim McCarthy, CEO of Poundland, said: “The success of Dealz in the Republic of Ireland
ARRESTED FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING
was a clear demonstration that we have the capability to generate positive financial returns in new geographies quickly. We have been very careful and thorough in our evaluation of further European expansion opportunities and we are confident that our offer and our model suits the Spanish market well. “We have a very detailed, low risk and low cost entry plan and the management strength and capacity, in the UK and in Spain, to execute it well. I’m confident that Poundland’s amazing value will quickly resonate with Spanish customers.”
A drugs raid carried out by Alicante’s Guardia Civil has led to the arrest of a police officer who was found to be a member of a group of traffickers based in the region. The raid, conducted by officers from the Judicial Police in San Juan, resulted in the detention of half a dozen suspects, including the Guardia agent, who was stationed at the Alicante-Elche airport. Identified as GOM, and 41 years of age, the officer was arrested last Friday morning at his home, in San Vicente del Raspeig, while other members of the gang were arrested in El Campello. Investigations remain ongoing and sub judice and as such there is little information available, particularly in respect of the details regarding the arrested officer and the extent of his involvement with the gang.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Expats and Television Nothing disturbs the mind of an otherwise dedicated expat, and particularly those of the retired variety, than being unable to watch their favourite TV programmes from their home country. Admittedly, in countries such as Spain, France, Portugal and Italy, watching a good dose of national TV from time to time does help to improve language skills. Indeed, I know of several expats who claim that they have learned their new language entirely from watching television and listening to the radio in their adopted countries. Sadly, I doubt that this could be true in the case of Spain, where reality TV, quizzes and game shows seem to dominate the daily diet. The daily output is a little weird, although many of the news channels are usually worth watching. There is also much to be said from watching familiar Hollywood blockbusters with Spanish subtitles; it is a good way to become more familiar with the language and is much cheaper than buying Spanish lessons. Over the years, I have noticed that even the most hardened and cynical critics of the BBC, such as those who detest paying the annual licence fee and would previously have supported an end to the national broadcaster, have now recognised that it has become a national institution. I have seen expats beg for British television and crave to be able to pay the licence fee after just a few weeks in Spain. I have witnessed grown men cry when their beloved Sky box and enormous dish become obsolete overnight when the broadcaster transferred to another satellite. I have seen usually law abiding Brits happily hand
over fistfuls of cash to known Mafia enterprises, simply for the privileged of having a baking tray looking ‘aerial’ fitted to their roof, together with an assurance that they will receive Brit television for life, albeit illegally gathered from broadcasters in the UK. It is certainly true, although many expats will be reluctant to admit it, that being able to watch familiar television programmes from their home country makes for a happier expat. Of course, purists will say that this is wrong; expats should suffer the delights of Spanish TV like everyone else, and be out eating paella and drinking Rioja every evening; they should be socialising with Spanish people, and spending their time getting to know the culture and language. Of course, they are right, philosophically and culturally speaking; however, this view ignores the fact that British television is of exceedingly high quality, keeps Brits in touch with their language and culture and, perhaps most importantly of all, helps to maintain links with the country of their birth. Above all they happen to enjoy it; indeed, it is best described as a soggy comfort blanket. Over the last few weeks, one national UK newspaper has had a campaign that appears to attempt to undermine expat life in Spain, Portugal and France in favour of a new El Dorado in the making - that of Dubai. Personally, I cannot see Dot and Bert from Wigan dreaming of retiring in Dubai, and certainly not opening a bar there. I suspect that vested interests are at work at the newspaper, and they are desperately trying to sell homes for a Sheik or two. The newspaper claims that 20 per cent of all British expats are leaving Spain “in droves” because of the recession, unemployment and a host of other reasons, although they forget to mention, of course, that 80 per cent of expats choose to stay and are rather content with their lives. Actually, the paper has it completely wrong. The real reason behind the “exodus” from Spain to the UK is nothing more complicated than television transmission from the previous satellite has suddenly ended; it is now much more difficult to receive British television in Spain that it was a few months ago. There are currently huge swathes of expats foaming at the mouth that they can no longer receive Brit TV, and this is the real reason for their sudden change of heart and a move back to the UK. Sorry, but I must end now, Eastenders is about
to start. If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). MORE DOORS, MORE FUN:
TRAFFIC OFFICES NO LONGER ACCEPTING CASH
MEET THE FIRST-EVER MINI 5-DOOR HATCH
The ability to pay cash at the regional traffic officers of the DGT has been withdrawn from their offices across the Valencia and Murcia regions. From now on, payment for such procedures related to vehicle and driver licenses and road safety can only be done by credit or debit card. The aim of the procedure is to simplify the activities at the offices, whilst significantly reducing the risks and costs involved in handling cash and its subsequent transfer to a bank. A pilot scheme has been gradually spreading through the country, and has now reached Valencia, as well as Cartagena and Murcia this week. In fact, according to the DGT, only 12% of all transactions were completed in cash, which is a contributing factor to the implementation of the new payment model. Now, if you visit any of the traffic offices in either Valencia or Murcia, you will be able to pay by credit or debit card, or you can pay fees via their electronic facilities on the DGT website, dgt.es, where you can also download a form to enable you to pay at a bank, and in the case of international residents, there is the possibility of an international bank transfer.

Aromatherapy and our hands By Penny Wing Most of us women look after our faces and some of us work out at the gym in an effort to look younger but if you don’t look after your hands they will give your age away!
Essential oils can help to keep your hands looking their best. You can add a few drops of your favourite oil to your regular hand cream or better still make a cream from scratch. Oils good for dry hands include Rose, Geranium, Sandalwood and Patchouli. Oils for neglected hands include Rose, Lemon, Geranium or Patchouli. If you have a cut or graze you could use the following anti septic oils such as Lavender, Rosemary, Lemon or Lime. Nails To have good strong healthy nails you have to attend not only to the part of the nail that we cut (the free edge), but also to the nail bed or cuticle. Many physical conditions show up in the nails as ridges or thickening, including arthritic and rheumatoid conditions in which the nails thicken and become distorted. Oils to stimulate strong, healthy nail growth include Lemon, Lavender, Grapefruit or Rosemary. As an alternative you could massage the nails with a carrier oil such as Almond or Grapeseed. If you want to soften your cuticles make up the following blend: 5ml Jojoba oil, 5 drops Carrot oil and 2 drops of Eucalyptus Peppermint and massage well into the cuticle every day. If you are unfortunate to get a nail infection make up the following blend and massage around the nail bed three times a day: 10 drops of Tea Tree, 5 drops of Lavender in 15 ml of vegetable oil. Oil Safety Lemon – do not use on skin before sunbathing, may cause irritation, use in moderation. Patchouli – overuse can cause a loss of appetite, insomnia and nervous attacks. Rosemary - do not use if you suffer from epilepsy or are pregnant. Tea Tree – possible sensitization in some people. Grapefruit – do not use on skin before sunbathing. Penny is a qualified aromatherapist, reflexologist, holistic therapist, Reiki Master, Angel teacher and counsellor. VALENCIA PHARMACISTS CONSIDER STRIKE ACTION
In a result that was totally unexpected the presidents of the College of Pharmacists of Alicante, Castellon and Valencia rejected the payment schedule for the settlement of their outstanding prescription debt proposed by the Generalitat councilors of Health and Finance last Monday. They say that pharmacists no longer have the financial capability to bear the advance costs of medicines for the month of June unless the ministry clear their outstanding debts much quicker than the proposed schedule of payments. As such the risk of industrial action once again is likely to threaten the closure of pharmacies and therefore put many lives in danger across the region. A representative for the pharmacists said following their meeting with the regional Government that the new payment schedule was ‘poor’ and it does not enable them to meet their own financial obligations. The Generalitat meanwhile say that they are about to pay 41,32 million euro which equates to 42% of the outstanding invoice for the month of March. Minister for Health, Manuel Llombart , said that a ‘temporary problem’ in the treasury has prevented them paying the March bill, which was due by the end of May, but he hoped now to now speed things up so that the April invoice would be settled at the end of June, the remaining March invoice by 15 July and the May invoice by the end of July. Following the publication of the payment schedule the Presidents of the College of Pharmacists convened on Monday to decide what actions they might undertake. The presidents of their three professional bodies then sent a statement signed by the Pharmacy Board Valenciano which made it clear that they do not accept these conditions. They say that they are now to call a meeting of all pharmacists on Monday, June 16 to discuss the situation further. Until then, due to the "serious situation" within the sector, the Assembly will send a burofax to Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro asking for intervention by the central government. The fax will
inform the government of the liquidity problems faced by pharmacies and the 'impact' that may arise as a result of their continued dispute. Llombart insisted however, that the two bodies are not "too far" from reaching a solution which he felt sure would quickly be found.
WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM- SIMPLE TIPS AND SOLUTIONS In a look-obsessed society, a few pounds here and there might still be neglected in the fast-paced life but anymore than that and the person has grave issues! While over weight can usually be an appearance issue for many, in essence, a higher order of it might relate to some medical conditions too and that can be a serious damage to one’s health. Besides the common effects of being overweight, unforeseen problems in the knee joints, sleep, mood swings, energy levels and other internal aspects of a human body can be witnessed as well. Tips to help Weight loss Here are a few simple tips on how to lose weight and push off those extra pounds from your body without sweating a lot; Instead of subtracting food from your daily diet and starving, adding subsidiary food products will help you gain control of your weight easier. Drink a lot of water and other milk based drinks on everyday basis; there is something about a liquid intake that does the weight loss much better than any food product.
Wake-up workout is one of the most effective workouts and you might want to exercise your abs, stomach and back with simple exercises that helps burn maximum calories. Grains are always a better dietary intake then many; even if twigs and cereals isn’t your style, wheat germ and oat bran will do the trick in every morning breakfast just fine. Protein in your diet on a daily basis is highly important as it helps tone up one’s body and keep weight under check. Snack smarter and eat fitter is very commonly said by many dieticians; a healthy breakfast and light lunch followed with a filling dinner is just the right way to eat every working day. Going to gym on a daily basis is always a good exercise but keeping it intact and maintaining the everyday stretch is what will help sustain good health and weight. Simple tips like these on a home level itself can help you lose weight and kick off the extra pounds in just a few weeks; staying healthy is also an important way to make sure that obesity or even extra weight never becomes an issue again.

Colombia v Ivory Coast. Gary Lineker presents live coverage of the World Cup game between Colombia and Ivory Coast, which takes place at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia. Colombia are the Group C seeds but face a tough examination against a powerful Ivory Coast side featuring the likes of Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure. The Ivorians were handed extremely difficult draws in their two previous World Cup campaigns, failing to advance to the knock-out stage in both 2006 and 2010. This could be the last chance for their so-called ‘golden generation’ to shine on the biggest stage. Los Cafeteros are making their first World Cup appearance since 1998, and have only reached the last 16 once before - in 1990. However, a new wave of talent has emerged which has seen the country soar up the Fifa rankings in the last three years. They boast some exciting young players, including Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado and Monaco playmaker James Rodriguez. Commentary from Steve Wilson and Mark Lawrenson. 20:05 BBC News at Six. 20:30 BBC Regional News. 21:00 Holby City. Little Star. Jac and Jonny prepare for their day in court, both determined to win Emma. However, Jac’s carefully-laid plans are thrown into disarray by a powerful force from her past. Even at death’s door Paula proves she still has the power to tie Jac in knots. With his divorce finalised and living at home with his mum, Sacha isn’t sure his day could get worse, but when news that he treated a Nazi war criminal hits the front pages, he puts his own feelings aside to go to Essie’s aid. 22:00 Celebrity MasterChef. Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. The second heat sees actors Amanda Burton, Ken Morley and Emma Barton as well as TV presenter Alison Hammond and former JLS singer JB Gill enter the kitchen as they undertake three tough culinary challenges in a bid to prove themselves to judge’s John Torode and Gregg Wallace. 23:00 BBC News at Ten. 23:25 BBC Regional News. 23:32 BBC Weather.
23:35 Match of the Day Live. Japan v Greece. Gary Lineker presents live coverage of the day’s second game in Group C, which sees Japan take on Greece in Natal. The Japanese are hoping to reach the last 16 for the third time in four World Cups. They took part in last year’s Confederations Cup, when they were involved in the game of the tournament - a thrilling 4-3 defeat to Italy. Despite some defensive weaknesses, their squad is packed with skilful, creative midfielders such as AC Milan’s Keisuke Honda and Manchester United’s Shinji Kagawa. Greece caused one of the biggest surprises at a major tournament when they won the European Championship a decade ago as huge outsiders. Commentary comes from Jonathan Pearce and Martin Keown. 02:10 Holiday Weatherview. 02:15 BBC News. Uruguay v England. It looks like being a pivotal game in England’s World Cup campaign as they face Uruguay at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo. The fitness of Luis Suarez will be a big talking point. The Liverpool
striker terrorised Premier League defences all season, but had minor knee surgery a month ago and may be lacking his usual sharpness. Suarez’s club team mates Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Stirling are exciting prospects in Roy Hodgson’s young side, and the England boss will be hoping to qualify from Group D with a win. England have played Uruguay just once before in the World Cup, resulting in a draw in the first group game in 1966 - which of course turned out quite well for England in the end. Adrian Chiles presents tonight’s coverage and is joined by Glenn Hoddle, Ian Wright and Lee Dixon for analysis of the vital match. 23:30 ITV News and Weather. 00:05 The Cube. OCCUPATION LICENSES IN ALICANTE BY MARTINEZ DE LA CASA ARCHITECTS n Occupation License is a document broadly used by Town Halls in Alicante for several issues. Currently the submission (registration receipt) of having applied for an Occupation License (not the license itself), is required to sign for a property sale at any Notary within Alicante. The document, also called Habitation License or Habitation Cedule, is required in other regions too, to deal with electricity contracts or arrange water supplies.
A
This document/receipt is achieved by submitting a dossier with the compilation of the Title Deeds, water and electricity bills, annual Town Hall tax, and NIE, one or more certificates by an Architect and sometimes complete plans of the property. Requirements vary widely among municipalities, as does the registration tax or Town Hall's fee that is necessary to pay on applying for the Occupation License. For example the registration tax in Torrevieja Town Hall is 17€, whilst in Orihuela you would pay approx. 104€. Martinez de la Casa Architects offer this dossier service to obtain the registration receipt/application for the Occupation License in all Alicante, from 98 € + IVA (In case paperwork for properties in Torrevieja) Prices subject to different Town Halls. If you contract our services, Martinez de la Casa Architects will accurately quote according to your Town Hall and make an appointment to visit the property, measuring if necessary and compiling all dossier paperwork. We deliver the package in 7/10 working days and you will receive your stamped
receipt from the Town Hall within 7/10 working days. The Town Hall will take an indefinite time to issue the License (can be months), notifying you by letter and ordinarily requesting any of the property details to be updated. However, to sell your home in Alicante, the Notary only ask for proof of having applied for the Second Occupation License, therefore our service is sufficient to carry out the sale. Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of certificates and licenses, amongst other services. Also the number one company in EPC certificates (121€ IVA inc) and Antiquity Certificates (from 250€ + IVA) in the area. Please call us on 665 810 411 if you have any queries. SAMM RACING PENULTIMATE DAY With some members on holiday or having other commitments, only 7 boats turned out for the penultimate race day of the SAMM Spring Series. It really was a game of two halves, with the Faversham (David and Louise Belcher) having a gear failure in the first race, and having to retire, then coming first in the second race. Louise lacks some confidence in her ability but getting the first has boosted her somewhat. Tug Wilson raced the Hartley, in Don Clark’s absence, and put in a good showing with a first and second. Tug very pleased about that. At the start of the second race a Laser 2000, whose crew had a combined age of 148 years, managed to capsize but also managed to right the boat and continue to complete the race. We think that deserves some sort of trophy. Three new members raced today. Martin Hayman and Mike Hall crewed for Julian Pering in the Sailfish ‘Mistral’ with their inexperience in the boat shown by their last place in the first race but they did improve to third in the second race. Frits Baer joined Norman Vener in the Laser 13 ‘Shoestring Quatro’, finishing 4th and 6th. Nancy Jones did her first duty as Assistant Race Officer backed up by Rosie Wilson who had helped out the previous week. Only for some wag to com-
ment that Tug always gets a good result when Rosie is on duty. With a couple of places in close contention, everybody is looking forward to the last race day of the season on June 22nd.
DUATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The photo below shows from left to right:- David Belcher, Louise Belcher, Tug Wilson
The World Championships was held in Pontevedra, on 1 June and in the age group section local Club Tragmillas was represented by two competitors, Marina Martinez and Francisco Morales, both obtaining magnificent results. Marina took bronze by finishing 3rd in the 20-24 year age group while Francisco finished 5th in the 60-64 age group. Last year when the Spanish National Championship event was held in Avilés the pair finished 1st and 2nd respectively.

LAST MINUTE CHANGE OF VENUE FOR LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY A last minute change this venue, we were going to go to Las Pinaillas but things did not work out as planned. So many thanks must go to Alenda for fitting us in at such short notice. The course was is fine fettle, nicely manicured greens and fairways making our visit all the more enjoyable. Now we are into summer we expect blue skies and clear days and it was just this. We set off earlier than expected so some people had to be summoned to the tee, quickly sorting and tees and clubs, so no time to think and straight down the middle. All was going to plan for Steve until one of his tee shot went way right, nearly onto the motorway, but being of ’sound mind’ and body he scaled the hill to find his ball right on the top, so looking back up the fairway, there was Steve on one hill and the big black bull on the one behind. If only I’d have had the camera! His mission proved a great help as he came in one of the winners.

Sunshine, tapas and a few drinks and chat were enjoyed back at The Tavern, a nice ending to a good day.
EL PLANTIO 2 GOLF SOCIETY The competition this week was a Texas Scramble, with a good turnout of 21 players we had 7 teams of 3 players each, each player had to take 5 tee shots with 3 spares, sounds easy, but so often it becomes a struggle especially if a player is having an off day. The scores today were not the best I've ever seen, but too good for my team this week. We are playing the main course on Friday 13th and a large turnout is expected, good luck to you all and have a great day. The results this week: Nearest the pin on hole 4: Kenny Reddington, Hole 9: Ian Henderson 3rd place Ian Henderson, Rod Loveday & Martin Rickman with a nett 50.79 In 2nd place were Roger Marshall, Lyn Young & George Stanhope
with a nett 49.5 In 1st place we had Kenny Reddington, Brian Watson & Gordon Abba with a nett 47.95 The next competition is on 17th June at El Plantio. Put your name on the list in the club house by Sunday, if you would like to play. Be sure to be there well before 9am on Tuesday. New members are welcome to join the El Plantio Golf Society, where special membership price is available for anyone who joins the Society. HORADADA BOWLS CLUB
Hurricane League There was bound to be tears at Greenlands this week as our 2 teams played each other. However, a great game of bowls by both the Gladiators & the Glosters where the score does not reflect how close the game really was. After 16 ends the Glosters were winning on 4 rinks but unfortunately it wasn't their day A fantastic game which I am sure was enjoyed by almost everyone. The end result was Gladiators 5 rinks & 123 shots and Glosters 1 rink and 85 shots. Well done Gladiators a hard fought for 12 points with a consolation 2 pts for the Glosters. Skip Glyn Inwood and his 2 'daffodils' Ann Butterworth & Jean Giddings made the Glosters precious 2 pts. Generally ,for Greenlands, a good week at the office.
On Wednesday we had a home game in the VCL against El Rancho. While we won the game overall on shots the points were shared at 6 each.Winners for Horadada were mens singles,Alan Pugh 21 - 8 and the rink of Fred Semper,Roy Collins,Roy Thompson and Terry Hucknall 22 - 13.Our triple of Carol and Jack Linehan and Bill Stanaway were unlucky to lose with the very last wood of the game when Bill just nudged the jack to the opposition to alter a measure. Friday saw us playing at Emerald Isle in the SABA summer league.Unfortunately we lost the game by 91 shots to 102 ,gaining only 4 points. Our winning Trips. were Wayne Jackson,Roy Collins and Alan Pugh 21 - 14 and Ian Gillan,Jim Kerr and Barry Evans 21 16.This is the 3rd game in a row that we have lost after winning the first four and we will be slipping down the league. There are five games left in the league, four of them at home, so lets try and reverse our fortunes of late.

VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice Another very busy week with all three of our Four Wood Pairs teams in action on Monday Gail Willshire’s Ladies team recording a 5 points to nil win by 39 shots to 27 thanks to wins from Gail and Jenny Bowman and Beryl Regan and Barbara Brown. This year’s Captain’s Day stableford was held on the 6th June at La Marquesa Golf Club. There was a fantastic turnout of 45 players who enjoyed excellent playing conditions, both with regard to the weather and the superb condition of the course. Good scoring seemed inevitable, and that proved to be the case. Some of the fairway markers sported the Union Jack which was a fortuitous coincidence given it was also the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. The day could be said to have a dual significance, in that it was Debbie’s Day too. Thanks go to all those who worked behind the scenes and helped to ensure the event was so successful, in particular Sue and Kath who kept everyone fed and watered by the 9th green. There were also a great many very kind sponsors, and thanks go to all of them for their support and the wonderful array of prizes. The presentation and post-match refreshments were at Stevie’s Bar. But was it a case of Debbie being assisted by the beautiful Ralph, or

BENIJOFAR GOLF SOCIETY AT LAS COLINAS The society played the local course of Las Colinas for it’s June outing and twenty two players turned out for what proved to be a good days golf. We started at the unearthly hour of 8am which turned out to be a bit of a rush as everybody got there nice and early, only to find that the course itself did not open up until 7.30 ! We have not played this course as a society for a few years due to it’s pricing structure but it was nice to play a well looked after course with manicured fairways and good greens (apart from a recent light sanding ). The weather was good for the whole round apart from quite a strong wind on a number of holes which made quite a difference in club selection, particularly when playing over to the greens guarded by water . Nearest the pin winners on the day were John Sanchez on the fifth and Brian Ead on the seventh hole. On the back nine, it was Carol Firth on the tenth with John Mcmillan
on the fourteenth and Carol Firth again on the seventeenth. In the par three competition, it was Brian Ead who won with fifteen points with Roger Burton winning the par fives with eight points. In the Stableford competition, the scoring was quite close at the top and nobody managed to play to par. In third place due to a higher handicap was Dave Moore with thirty two points, losing out to Nikki Ead with the same score but a lower handicap. Winner on the day was Andy Trefry with thirty four points. The winner of the “kempy” was Ian Falkner for most golf played which was then softened by winning the football card ! Thanks go to Ron and Yolande at the “Sportsman” bar for the food spread after the game and to John Sanchez for sponsoring prizes from the Spice Hut, Chambers Bar and Jake the Hairdressers. Next meeting is at Lo Romero on the 9th July. For information on the society, contact John Kemp on 605 195 056 or at benijofargolf@hotmail.com

‘Mike Probert talks Golf (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘La Peraleja - Update’ Seve Ballesteros designed the superb course at La Peraleja which was planned to be exclusive and in fact when first opened the green fee price was €90 (walking). Local golfers will be aware the in subsequent years they have has numerous problems with a number of fairways as a result of high salt levels at the grass root killing the grass in large areas. To be fair to the owners of La Peraleja they have reflected the poor condition of the fairways with hugely reduced green fee prices at circa €30-35 including buggy (and still people complained). I held a meeting with them last week and can report that they now have a plan to re-deign and re-seed the fairways to eliminate the problem in the near future. The cost of this re-modelling work could be as high as €120K but will eliminate the problems once and for all. Clearly the green fee prices will increase to the normal levels in the area as the course returns to its former glory so my advice to you is to fill your boots while you still can at these crazy low prices. I will provide you with an update as the work progresses. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Veteran Society members Colin Marsden and John Eyre once again found themselves sharing the podium, this time with Paul Durrant, when the Hub Golf Society played their 6th event of the season at the Algorfa course of La Finca. Despite recent rants concerning his reduced handicap Eyre still found a way to finish in the top 3 and prizes with a creditable 30 points. Close friend and fellow ranger at Villamartin Marsden went one better to secure second place behind Durrant who claimed his second Grand Prix win of the season.
The Hubbers were joined at the Finca by several notable guests, in the shape of Mick Earls, former Southampton defender, Max Clark currently edging his way towards a debut for Hull City in the Premiership and Geoff Smith founder of the Geoff Smith Foundation which supports Multiple Sclerosis sufferers. The latter figured best of the illustrious trio, carding an outstanding 38 points to win the PJ´s Rentacars best guest prizes. Font de Llop is the next venue for the Hubbers this Thursday 19th June. Players wishing to join the Society for this next event should register their interest at the Hub Sports Bar, Villamartin. First tee time is 10.45 a.m. A full list of events up to and including October is available for all interested parties. TMGS MATCH REPORT, LA FINCA 11TH JUNE 2014. On this day in history in 1950, Ben Hogan returned to tournament play after a near fatal car accident and went on to win the US Open and also 28 members turned up at La Finca with the sun shining albeit with a few clouds in the sky for our latest venture to this wonderful course. The course itself is in splendid condition for this time of the year and the greens were a little on the slow side, well, when I say a “little on the slow side” it has to be fair to say that if you rolled a ball 20 yards along the green, Colin Marsden would reach the hole before the ball and that is with Colin running backwards. All 4 of the NTP’s available were claimed and the recipients of a bottle of fine wine dontated by Tom Jones and Pearl Sabine. We all wish Tom all the cvery best in his rehabilitation and hope he graces us with his presence on the golf course later this year. The wine went to John Eyre (Hole 3), Steve Higgins (Hole 6), Kate Helm (Hole 13) and Ray Cadman who’s tee shot to the 16th was barely 12 inches away from a Hole In One. Three players split the “Two’s” pot - Ray Cadman, Dag Lovas and R Elkes. Scores on the day were very reasonable and you needed in excess of 30 points to claim a prize and the Best Visitor award went to R Elkes with a very tidy (and top score) 42 points. The Silver Division players –once again – outscored their Gold Division mob and Mick Kennedy and Kate Helm shared 34 points with Kate’s back nine securing her 3rd place with Mick pushed back into 4th. Ernie (Belfast Bandit) once again stepped up to the podium and again, the battle between him and Colin Marsden continues but
Colin’s 39 points was 3 better than Ernie’s 36 points. In the Gold Division a 33 from Alan Rixson saw him take 4th place and a 34 point score from Steve Higgins gave him 3rd slot. Darren Hancock took the runner-up slot with 35 points and Chris Oatley took top slot with 38 points. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman
Following their relegation from Segunda A, the newly appointed Sports Director of Hercules CF, Dani Barroso, has made his first appointment at the club, the engagement of Jose Rojo, Pacheta, as the new club coach for a term of one year. Pacheta joins Hercules from the Poland where he managed Korona Kielce, who finished 13th following his one season in the post. During a long playing career the new manager appeared for both Espanyol and Numancia before going into management with Numancia, Real Oviedo and Cartagena from where he was surpris-
ingly dismissed by President Paco Gomez following their promotion. He moved to Poland and Korona Kielce last year. Barroso said he chose Pacheta because of his knowledge of Segunda B and because he is well used to working in ‘pressure’ situations, something that he will once again experience as he endeavours to get the former La Liga club back into Segunda A at the first time of asking. The Sporting Director said that with the most important appointment now made the club can focus their efforts on preparing a team that is guaranteed to challenge for promotion to Segunda A, but that his staff will not be rushed. "I want to have better team on August 31, than I had on June 30, to after getting off to a good start in the new season we will need to consolidate our efforts and ensure that we gain promotion.
It was the Society's annual Spring ball on Saturday night which was held at Fairways Restaurant Villa Martin. A tremendous night was had by all with excellent food and much dancing to the sounds of the excellent Sunflower Valley who entertained us throughout the evening. A big thank you to all those who were involved in arranging the evening especially Dee Biggerstaff our Social Secretary. Back on the golf course on Monday we were confronted with a new game called Counter Team game where the 4 man team had no idea how many scores on each hole would count towards their total until they reached the next tee where a counter had been left to indicate the number of scores. Needless to say every time my team all scored well on a hole we found

that only one score counted and then 4 counted when we had a bad hole. Nonetheless it was a generally agreed that it was nice to play a different format for a change and thanks to Tom Hardie our competitions secretary for introducing it to the programme. Certainly two teams found it to their liking both scoring 98 pts with the team of Mick Brentnall, Dave Pulling, Roger Tunstall and Donna Campbell winning on a count back from runners up Geoff Biggerstaff, Ron Percival, Ron Phipps and 'Albert'. On Wednesday we had our weekly singles Stableford competition which was played in perfect conditions and with the greens now almost back to their best there was some unbelievable scores being recorded. Even my score of level par was not enough to secure a top three position as the lowest score in the prizes was 37 pts with the highest a ridiculous 43 pts by Barry Holtham. Dougie Wright our handicap secretary had a big
smile on his face in anticipation of the cuts he was about to make to all those in the frame this week. The results were as follows: Cat 1. 1st. Mick Brentnall 40 pts 2nd. Dave Pulling 39 pts 3rd. Lindsay Forbes 37 pts Cat 2. 1st. Barry Holtham 43 pts 2nd. Annemarie Weisheit 39 pts 3rd. Brian Dent 38 pts 2's Club: Mick Brentnall, Tom Hardie and Lindsay Forbes On Friday we played a 4 ball Texas Scramble where the teams in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places were all within 0.2 of each other scoring between 61.3 and 61.5. It was the 4 ball of Geoff Biggerstaff, Ron Percival, Brian Humphreyson and Peter Dunn who were the unlucky runners up with 61.3 but the winners with a score of 60.5 (5 under par 67 gross) was the team of Mike Chapman, Ron Phipps, Rachel Leckey and Hendrick Oldenziel. Ron Phipps was the star of the show with an eagle on the 4th and birdies on the 10th and 12th holes.
