FIT FOR SUMMER On Thursday morning, hundreds of our more senior members of society from across Orihuela gathered at Playa Flamenca, to take part in an event to kick start the summer, under the title of Gerontogimnasia. With teams representing the pedan铆as of the municipality, members from La Murada, Virgen del Camino, Rinc贸n de Bonanza, La Aparecida, Molins, Camino Enmedio, El Arenal, Los Desemparados, Hurchillo, San Bartolome, and of course, the Orihuela Costa, all came together as one, as a group totalling some 330 people were welcomed by the Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, and the Councillor for Sports, Luis Galiano, both from the Los Verdes green party of Orihuela, to take part in this incredibly visual and heartwarming, and heart-exercising event.
As the music started, it was clear to see the effort the attendees had been making all year in order to mark the season, as each group had individually trained for a choreographed routine which would bring them together on the day, assembled and supervised by the instructors from the town hall, whose vibrant presentation had clearly rubbed off onto the attendees, as they all took part in their coloured and geographically branded tops, proud of who they were representing, with a real feeling of belonging and being part of the wider community of the municipality, with roots in each of their own individual home towns. In fact, the municipality of Orihuela is spread over such a large area, events like this are sometimes the only opportunity for inland residents to visit the coast. With buses carrying them to Play Flamenca, from places some considerable distance away, through the winding country roads. Continued on Page 2

Their light group dance and exercise routines were not only a delight to the eye, they were also part of a wider plan to encourage healthier living and exercise, something we can all do with a little reminder of from time to time, perhaps. In fact, as a token gesture for their efforts, the visitors were all given a bag of oranges, one of the healthiest foodstuffs we have, and grown right here on our doorstep. In fact, health, sports and the Orihuela Costa go somewhat hand in hand, with the Centro Deportivo Municipal Orihuela Costa being a first class health and fitness centre, which will this year be offering a Summer School for children through July and August, as well as their usual range of events for adults and children, such as tennis, pádel, football, swimming and aqua activities, and a range of fitness and multi-sports disciplines. The beaches themselves play host to a range of sporting activities too, from major events such as the recent triathlon, international cycle races, running and walking competitions, and we mustn´t forget such events as beach volleyball in the summer. In fact, this year, the Orihuela Costa will also be offering yet another new and exciting activity in July and August, as the coastal councillor, Martina Scheurer, explained, “This year we are going to offer guided snorkel tours of the Orihuela Costa”.
Monday, 23rd June, 2014 This event is being funded by the Coastal Department of the town hall and will be free of charge to those wishing to participate. Each group will be a maximum of 20 people, who will be split into two groups of 10. Whilst one group is being told about the unique marine environment of the coastline, the other group will be diving to witness it first hand, accompanied by a professional and qualified guide. One under water, the guide will use a range of signs to point out many of the features on the tour, some which are unique to the Orihuela Costa, offering a perhaps never before seen insight into the beauty beneath our feet that we may not even realise. More details will be available very shortly, but with each tour lasting some 3 hours, it is expected to be very popular, so registration will be essential through the town hall. For those not into the more energetic side, the Orihuela Costa will still have plenty on offer for you in the summer. Most of these details are still being confirmed, but we already know that a Fisherman´s Market has been arranged for the end of July. Much like the Medieval Market, the participants dress as fisherman or pirates, and the goods from the stalls take on a nautical theme. There will also be an arts and craft market in September, offering a wide range of handcrafted goods.
GUARDAMAR LIFE GUARDS SUPPORTED BY QUAD-RIDING COPS Life guard services on the beaches of Guardamar begin on Saturday the 21st of June, the same date as Orihuela, with the main beaches in the centre, as well as La Roqueta, and then from the 1st of July at Babilonia, and then from the 5th of July at the surrounding beaches of El Vivers, El Moncayo, El Camp and Les Ortigues. The Cruz Roja will be providing the life guard services this year, having signed the contract to start this weekend. Last year there were 3,359 incidents that required the intervention of the life guards on the beaches. This year, the service will also be extended by half an hour each day. In order to provide additional security on the beaches this year, Guardamar will also have the support of four local police officers with quads, which have the capability of travelling over the sandy dunes, and into the water, thus providing additional mobility in times of need.

A SUMMER OF DIRTY STREETS FOR TORREVIEJA The Torrevieja Town Hall seem unlikely to resolve the matter in the near future.
As the ten year long contract for waste collection, and street cleaning in the city of Torrevieja expired last week, the town hall still seem no closer to resolving the matter in either the immediate or long term future, resulting in warnings over the likelihood of poor service and dirty streets throughout the summer this year. The contract was first issued in 2004, when the annual fee was 9.7 million euro, but as recent reports have shown, it was later to be adjusted upwards to reach 15 million euro, and then a staggering 15,436,002 euro per year, which, when IVA and other adjustments are applied, resulted in a total cost of 16.3 million euro. In fact, this contract resulted in the former mayor, Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo of the PP, being sentenced to three years in prison for committing falsehood and prevarication, although he is yet to serve his time. Auditors, inspectors and even the staff had all raised concerns about the working practices and the contract terms, but despite the length of time the contract has been in place, the town hall have still failed to find an alternative, or even offer the service to tender. Now, as the contract has expired, the UGT union, which represents the workers of the company Acciona, have issued a statement which paints a bleak view of what the residents can expect as the city becomes even busier through the summer months as it tries to attract tourism and investors from around both Spain and the rest of the world. As previously reported, many of the vehicles used are long beyond their expected working life, with many suffering daily breakdowns. The facilities used by staff are far from adequate, with insufficient personal hygiene facilities and showers. Now, the union claims that staffing levels throughout the summer, rather than being increased as
they are in other areas, are in fact being cut back to levels similar to that of 2005, with many workers now only on part-time contracts. The net result, warns the union, means less cleaning and dirtier streets. The workers have been trying to gain reassurance from the mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón, even resorting to protests in the streets, in fear of their own future employment. The unions are now calling for the mayor to honour his commitment not to separate the two contracts of street cleaning and waste collection, and, primarily, to set about resolving the contract and tender to ensure that the workers have some security in their jobs, and that the service to the citizens is maintained. The union feels that given the expiry of the contract had been anticipated for many years, there has been sufficient time already to resolve these matters, and so, the specifications of new contracts must be completed “as soon as possible”. Meanwhile, the Los Verdes green party, who have questioned a number of irregularities in the working hours and the contract, supports the municipalisation of the service, as has been the case in Orihuela, in order to provide a satisfactory solution to this contract, not destroying any job and improving the quality of service provided.

CARITAS HELPED THIRTEEN PERCENT MORE PEOPLE IN 2013 The charitable association Cáritas in the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante has served over 81,000 people in 2013, 13% more than in 2012, as detailed in their annual report issued this week. Of the total number of people who were helped by the group, 34,609 were men and 46,702 were women. Jesús Murgui, the bishop of the diocese, emphasized the need to remain vigilant in the fight against poverty “because if society gets used to being in crisis, it runs the risk of becoming a chronic situation”.
was distributed towards vulnerable groups such as women, youth, elderly and AIDS patients. The remaining revenues were shared between employment and sociolabour integration, rural community and urban action, training, communication and awareness, international cooperation and management, technical management, field monitoring and evaluation. As for the origin of the economic resources, 72.13% came from the private sector, around 3.1 million was obtained through collections and donations, and the remainder, some 1.1 million, came from public injections.

LEADER KING CONGRATULATED FOLLOWING CORONATION ADVERTISING HOTLINE
On behalf of the people of the city, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has sent a telegram to the newly crowned King Felipe VI, congratulating him on his proclamation.
The message, address to both their majesties Don Felipe VI and Doña Leticia, speaks of the sincerest “respect, loyalty and consideration, on behalf of all torrevejenses”, on the special day last week. The message also ensures support of a clear commitment to democratic stability and diversity in Spain. Rather more informally, the new king and queen were toasted by the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion shortly after their coronation on Thursday evening. The Branch always concludes business at it’s monthly meetings by toasting the King and Queen of Spain and Queen Elizabeth II and in so doing was probably the first RBL Branch to offer their congratulations. The photograph below shows the Chairman, Keith Carter, and Treasurer, Peter Breen, raising their glasses during the toast. The announcement was made to coincide with the annual day of the charity, in which the hopes are to raise awareness of the plight of those less fortunate, whilst reinforcing the idea of ??building “spaces of hope”, in order to “promote the integral development of the people, especially the poor and marginalized”, by encouraging a more caring and participatory society. During the breakdown of investments from the 2013 report, details were given of the assistance provided in areas of support, employment, job placement, homelessness, women, immigrants and people with AIDS. The report shows that social support has meant an investment of 4.2 million euro, 5.46% more than in 2012, plus, 2.6 million went to the assistance to people at risk of social exclusion, whilst 601,285 euro
In presenting the report, the “great work” of the volunteers was also highlighted, with their members praised for their continual support and response “in an effective, close and decisive manner”, with details of their 1,689 people who collaborated with the group last year, of which 1,636 were volunteers, an increase of 18% on the previous year. Those in need were not forgotten in the presentation, which served to highlight the needs of countless families who are still driven by the need for food and assistance to pay for the most basic of needs such as water and electricity, but, moreover, the group has seen a noted increase in grant applications for “school supplies” or dining assistance within “households where there are children”. In addition, during 2013, a total of 1,530 homeless people were assisted by the group, who helped where they could in providing “housing, food, clothing, medication, processing aids, attending courses and workshops, social monitoring, psychological and career guidance”.

How can I get professional Financial or Investment advice in the Southern Costa Blanca? 6. We re-visit you to complete any further paperwork required. Blacktower, give us an example of things you take into consideration. Case study Husband and wife have €25,000 available in a bank in Spain. They require more income or growth than they are currently receiving. They wish to access the cash at any time. They have 2 children both resident in the UK and would like to pass all their money to them when they die (avoiding bureaucracy and procrastinating tactics by certain foreign institutions). The investment risk profiling questionnaire assesses them as “cautious” and this essentially dictates that for a low risk they can expect to gain a return that outperforms inflation and bank deposit interest. They do not want exposure to higher risk for higher return. 1. Call Blacktower Financial Management´s Costa Blanca office and ask for Dave Diggle or call direct him direct on 615607278. 2. I will have a brief chat to ascertain your requirements and you decide whether to meet at our offices or your home. 3. Blacktower's recommendation: A specific cautious investment product that should outperform inflation and deposit rate returns, using a well-known institution that has an excellent credit rating and capital cover ratio (in this case 3 times as much as required by regulation). This satisfies the cautious nature of the clients. The investment product would be held within another product, also from the aforementioned institution, based outside of Spain for several reasons including satisfying the client's wishes for an easy transfer of the assets upon their passing. The product would allow for instant access and the payment of income or growth at regular intervals of the client's choosing. MORE STAFF AND INVESTMENT IN ORIHU ELA The life guard services on the Orihuela Costa began on Saturday, a week later than was hoped, but with that week delay now being added to the end of the summer season. In addition, the company who were awarded the contract, as part of their additional offers, are to provide a further 10 days longer than contracted. Therefore, the lifeguards will now be present on the beaches until the end of September, during a time when many a concern had been raised in the past over the normal withdrawal of service. Furthermore, the company will also provide an additional 2 hours cover per day, beyond what the contract required, providing even more cover throughout the summer season. The company will also provide an additional amphibious chair and work closely with the beach services company to ensure accessibility on those beaches where it is possible, is maintained to the highest level. The beaches of Orihuela will gain the support of an additional 10 local police officers for July and August, some of whom will fulfil their patrol duties on bicycles, as in previous years, allowing them easier access to some of the more difficult locations to drive, such as the beaches and promenades.
many weeds from the streets as possible, which would then allow for chemical treatment to take place, and they would then move onto clearing and cleaning some of the parks and gardens which are not covered by the contract of work currently in place. Martina Scheurer, the councillor for the coast, previously praised her Los Verdes green party colleague in the employment department, Manuel Gallúd, for giving priority to the Orihuela Costa.
Alicante, where the main equipment is centralised. At this time, they are only looking to gain support from recognised groups, which will enable them to coordinate a campaign for the maximum impact. Individuals who are keen to support the cause should encourage any groups they are members of to get involved. Initial information can be obtained from the International Residents Office of the Playa Flamenca town hall.
A new contract for extra workers to cover the waste disposal network has been approved, which means that the town hall is now able to employ people to cover breaks and holidays, thus ensuring no reduction in service, as well as dealing with some of the delays in collections that one or two locations have suffered recently.
Residents of Cabo Roig are facing temporary disruption as work has commenced to repair the antiquated water drainage system in the area. Although most major work such as this is normally suspended until after the busy summer season, as this work relates to water drainage it can only be carried out during the “dry season”, when flooding and water flow is least likely to happen. Once complete, the work should prepare the area for the next rainy season in autumn, and hopefully ease the risk of flooding that many of the residents have had to cope with for decades as the area grew beyond the capabilities of the drainage system.
The principle German speaking residents association of the Orihuela Costa are reaching out to other community and neighbourhood associations, looking to them to join in a campaign they wish to launch to try to get a fully equipped fire service on the Orihuela Costa. At the moment, beyond the “first response” service provided by the Protección Civil, the closest fire stations are Torrevieja, Almoradí and
As Orihuela moves into the digital age, with many of the traditional paper-based functions moving to computer, there has been a noticeable delay at the point of registration, as documents presented to the town hall need to be scanned. In order to try to alleviate the delay, the registry has been boosted with an additional member of staff, who will also be able to cover breaks and holidays in the future, a facility not previously available, thus improving the documentation process. At the same time, the modernisation department are investigating the possibility of hiring additional internet connections, to allow for faster upload and download speeds via an asymmetric line. Around 40 labourers employed through a scheme developed by the department of employment, began work on the Orihuela Costa on Friday. These previously unemployed people of the municipality have been given the opportunity for work through the scheme, and were sent to the coast as a priority. Their first tasks involved clearing as
The German Group are intending to reach out to all other Associations
The Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, has spoken of how Orihuela Costa is continuing to grow. The announcement at the start of June of 167 new homes to be built, plus the announcement this week of another 22, all mean that the work will bring jobs to the area, as well as shows how Orihuela is one of the first locations to be growing out of the austere times suffered in recent years. Explaining how the work shows that “the economy is picking up again, and it is refreshing that “developers are once again willing to invest in the Orihuela Costa”, is testament to that growth. Meanwhile, as one or two residents have complained about the appearance of trucks carrying building supplies in the area, they are reminded that this is just temporary, as once the building is complete, the neighbourhoods will be growing with more people, services and residents, and more people hopefully signing onto the padrón, brining more money from the central government to the local services. As Orihulea is now in possession of the three different accreditation flags for the beaches, the Blue Flag, “Q” and Qualitur, the annual flag raising ceremony will be held on Friday the 27th of June.

TORREVIEJA CHEAPEST FOR RENTALS
The cheapest holiday rental properties in the Valencia region can be found in Torrevieja, according to the latest data published in the annual TecniTasa report. On average, for an officially registered and rentable front-line property of 65 square meters in Torrevieja, the price stands at 240 euro per
week. In contrast, in the Castellón area of Alcocebre, the equivalent rental would set you back 850 euro. In terms of a bargain holiday rental however elsewhere in Spain, the most affordable destinations are in Galician beaches of A Coruña, where you can rent a 97 square metre apartment for 220 euro. After that, the next bargains can be found at the beachside properties of Asturias, Valencia, Lugo or Malgrat in Barcelona. On the other hand, if you´re looking to splash out, a rental property in Playa del Sardinero, in Santander would cost you around 1,750 euro per week, slightly ahead of Hondarribia in Guipúzcua, where the price is 1.600 euro, or slightly cheaper at Sotogrande in Cádiz, where a weekly rental stands at 1.500 euro. The price does vary if we look at the price per square metre however, with Sitges in Barcelona costing the most, as opposed to the cheapest at A Coruña, Murcia y Valencia. It should be made clear that even the company themselves describes the supply of rentals in the Spanish coastal towns is very "heterogeneous", and therefore the prices of tourist accommodation vary depending on aspects such as the type and area, amongst other factors. According to the report, the average Spanish family looking to spend a week on the coast would have to spend 28% of their monthly salary for a week long holiday.
INTEREST GROWING IN AIRPOR T BUS SER VICE The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has this week expressed his satisfaction that the Torrevieja to AlicanteElche Airport bus link has grown by 25% in the first 5 months of the year. Since the 1st of January this year, a total of 27,602 passengers have used the service, compared to 22,242 during the same period last year. The average daily use was now 180 passengers, compared to 147 people per day in the first 5 months of 2013. As for each of the 5 months, in January there were 4,093 passengers, February saw 3,927, in March there were 5,015, April 6,873 and in May the bus carried 7,964 people, marking the busiest month so far. During the whole year of 2013, a total of 72,049 passengers were carried, representing an increase of 39.5% over 2012, when 51,660 people used the service. The especially liveried coach runs 8 services each way per day, every day of the year. With the bus catering for almost 50 people each run, the capacity for the entire service day is 800 people, and so with the 180 per day using the service, there is still plenty of room available.

SPAIN’S UNDERPRIVILEGED UP BY OVER 16% According to figures released last week in a report by the Bancaja Foundation and the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie) the human poverty index in Spain increased by 1.7% during the 5 years of the economic crisis, from 2007 to 2012.
The analysis takes into consideration factors related to deprivation in health and education as well as income and social exclusion and concludes that the poverty rate in Spain has increased while, at the same time, the probability of not reaching 60 years of age has declined by 15% and 20% in each case. However, the numbers of long-term unemployed have increased very substantially. Nationally the figures show that the poverty rate across the whole of Spain now stands at 16.2 per percent whilst the percentage in the Valencia region has grown to 25.1%, one in four inhabitants of the autonomy. Specifically, the greatest variation of human poverty has occurred in Extremadura (which is up by 15.5%), Andalucia (11%) and Canarias (12.4). These three regions are also those that have underperformed economically when compared to the national average. At the opposite ends of the scale are Navarra, the Basque Country and Cantabria, with the lowest levels ??of poverty, all of which are now below the national average. Villar drew particular attention to negative trends experienced by communities neighbouring the Mediterranean - from Catalonia to Andalusia, via Valencia and Murcia - despite the excellent performance that they have achieved in the tourism sector. He said that they have all invested heavily in public infrastructure and real estate, two sectors that have actually worsened their economic situations.

FRENCH AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS CALL FOR SIX DAY STRIKE The two main unions representing French air traffic controllers, the SNCTA and the UNSA-ICNA, have called for their workers to strike from Tuesday the 24th, until Sunday the 29th of June, in protest against the “Single European Sky” initiative proposed by the European Commission. The unions are concerned that the move will decrease air traffic control resources in France, and result in the privatization of some services, both of which will result in job losses and a reduction is pay
and working conditions for their staff. The strike action could paralyze air traffic across France, although many other flights can be diverted around the problem, there would also be considerable delays to most European services. The French government is meeting with representatives to try to avoid the action. Meanwhile, many train services were also affected in the country this week as workers on the rail network extended a strike in opposition to reforms of their network.
MOVISTAR UNION STRIKE TODAY A union representing the private company that operates Telefonica Movistar´s call centre, has called for its workers to strike today on the 23rd of June.
Should the strike go ahead, the result would be about a 50% reduction in the capacity of the customer call centre, which would result in considerable difficulties in customers being able to get through to the centre. The union explained that this strike has been called after the failure in negotiations to improve situations of “pressure” and “excessive control and lack of training” for the staff who operate in the centre. The company are trying to force calls to be answered and dealt with quicker, in order, they say, to improve the level of service given to clients. The union is also calling on support from both their own industry and others to down tools in support of industrial action on the day, as well as calling for protests outside the Telefonica Movistar building.

UNEMPLOYED FARM LABOURERS TAKEN ON IN PILAR Pilar de la Horadada have employed44 farm laborers for a 3 month period during the summer months. All are currently out of work and will be used by the town council to carry out general cleaning and housekeeping duties around the town. In total 38 laborers, and six foremen have been engaged. They will be split into a number of working groups and will perform tasks such as cleaning gutters, clearing roads or maintenance of the green areas in and around the town. The engagement of the labourers has been possible thanks to a grant of 170,000 euros received from the State Employment Promotion (Sepe), a slight increase in funding which allows an for six more staff than in 2013. These are all local residents who were welcomed at a ceremony attended by the mayor, Fidel Ros, the councilor for Employment, Asunción Sánchez and the councilor for Works and Services, Lancharro Francisco. Following the presentation they all took part in a short health and safety at work course prior to receiving their detailed instructions.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Gorillas and Risk Assessments recent and very sad story about an uninformed vet working at a zoo in Tenerife set me thinking about risk assessments and contingency planning this week. Apparently, the poor vet accidentally shot a colleague, who was dressed as a gorilla, with a tranquilliser gun during an emergency training exercise. It was all part of contingency planning as to how staff should respond in an emergency situation involving these heavyweight animals. Protection of visitors, staff and the animals is, of course, very important for such establishments. Indeed, the very fact that the zoo had a training exercise in place at all impressed me.
A
I often think that the people of the Canary Islands have far more in common with Cuba or Venezuela than Peninsular Spain. Laid back attitudes to life, as well as the ‘sloppy’ version of the Castellano language, are more reminiscent of Latin America than the rather crisper approach to life demonstrated in Madrid. Risk assessment and contingency planning for something that may never happen is usually seen as unnecessary at best, and foolish at worst. I guess that this is one of the hardest things that I have had to come to terms with during my time living and working in Spain and the Canary Islands.
As a teacher, my life was always linked to ‘what if?’ scenarios. Ensuring the safety of children in our care was, quite rightly, of paramount importance. Plans and polices for health and safety, child protection, fire and civil emergencies, were all painfully written, discussed, checked, approved and regularly reviewed. Contingency plans for staff absences, inclement weather, cycling safety, bus timetabling changes, quality of school meals (before the kitchens were closed), were often the stuff of staff and governors’ meetings. As for preparing the curriculum and actually teaching the children, we usually managed to fit that in as well.
Risk assessment and contingency planning for something that may never happen is usually seen as unnecessary!
The current popular situation with employment contracts in Spain and the Canary Islands, usually means that after eleven months of work, the employee is ‘laid off’ for a month and has to report to the unemployment office to claim benefit. The job that the employer used to fulfil is left vacant for a month and either colleagues are expected to work harder to fill the gap, or the job is not done until the absent colleague returns to work one month later. Unlike working in the UK, covering for absent colleagues simply does not happen over here. There is precious little in the way of risk assessments and contingency planning that takes place in the Canary Islands. Life is dealt with, or not dealt with, as it happens. If the postman takes a holiday, our letters are not delivered for a few weeks. If the owner of the village cafe bar’s wife has a baby, the cafe bar remains closed for a few weeks. Should bank counter staff be ill, there is no one at the counter who is able to assist customers until they have recovered. After all, it does not lead to the end of the world, does it? I have had to adjust my view of life to meet the situation that we are in now. However, I do applaud the good people operating the Tenerife zoo. In some ways, the freedom of not planning for ‘what if’ scenarios is refreshing and liberating. However, I often wish that a little more contingency planning would take place, just in case the worst should happen. Meanwhile, I can report that the man in the gorilla suit is recovering well and still talking to his colleague.

TWO AND A HALF THOUSAND CAUGHT IN DRINK AND DRUG CAMPAIGN The DGT traffic department has revealed that during their last campaign for road safety, 2,500 drivers were found to have consumed alcohol or drugs and then drove. During the campaign, which ran between the 2nd and the 8th of June, officers from the Guardia Civil conducted 1,059 tests for drivers suspected to have used drugs. Of these, 358 gave positive results, some 34% of the total. Of those, 3 drivers were brought to justice by presenting clear signs of driving under the influence of drugs. As usual, among the most consumed drugs were cannabis and cocaine. With regard to alcohol, the results indicated an overall fall in the number of drivers who had consumed alcohol. However, the traffic police still conducted 207,829 tests, of which 2,078 were positive. Of those caught driving whilst drunk, 1,870 were found during the routine checks, 177 had committed another motoring offence, and 75 were involved in accidents. Of those caught, 1,750 were dealt with as an administrative procedure, whereas 328 were dealt with through the criminal courts, as were the 17 people who refused the breathalyser.
The next campaign will also focus on drink and drugs, and will operate between the 14th and 20th of July, which coincides with the European Traffic Police campaign focussing on trucks and buses. In August, the campaign will be focused on speeding, whereas in September seatbelts will be the main subject of the campaign, which will also be a Europe-wide initiative.
ONE ‘L’ OF A SIGN ON DISPLAY A common question that often emerges when driving in Spain relates to signs, both on the roadside, and on vehicles. One such sign which is frequently seen is a greenbacked L-plate, which is indicative of a novice driver, although now qualified, and is designed to advise other road users of that fact. Officially known as the V-13, the L-plate must be displayed on the vehicle for a year after obtaining their permit to drive. There are one or two exceptions, but for the purpose of this article we are discussing why it would be displayed. The laws regarding the V-13 state that the “L” plate must be displayed on the left rear side of the vehicle, in a conspicuous place, except on motorcycles, vehicles for disabled persons and tricycles, where there are allowances for the location, other than it must be on the rear of the vehicle. Previously restricted to a slower speed than other drivers, a change in the law in 2011 meant that this no longer applied,
and that vehicles displaying the sign can travel at the same speed as other road users, subject to obvious restrictions. One element which is more restrictive for novice drivers is alcohol. We already know that the alcohol limit in Spain is considerably lower than the UK at 0.25 milligrams per litre, but for novice drivers, the limit is 0.15 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air. The other restriction relates to traffic violations, whereas a novice driver is given 8 points instead of 12 for fully experienced motorist, which are deducted should the driver be found guilty of offences relating to road traffic laws. The overall aim of the sign is to serve as a warning to other drivers that the person in charge of this particular vehicle is a novice, and has still to build on the experiences that a future behind the wheel will b r i n g . Caution, patience and understanding are all that is requested by those who have gained the knowledge, as well as allowing more distance and time for the driver to carry out the moves that may seem second nature to others. Finally, in the event that a novice driver chooses not to display the mandatory sign, then the prospect of an 80 euro fine is waiting for you, should you get caught out.

GREENS SEEK EXEMPTION FROM ROAD TAX FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES Torrevieja’s Los Verdes has filed a motion that will be heard at the next plenary session asking for a change in the Fiscal Tax Regulations relating to motor vehicles, whereby the tax burden for electric vehicles is either reduce or even waived. In a statement made last week, Los Verdes board says their initiative is in addition to the two motions previously filed in 2009 and 2011. The first was a request calling for urgent action for the installation of electric charging points and thereby ensuring that Torrevieja was amongst the first cities in the region to offer the service which was submitted through the Action Plan for Energy Saving and Efficiency. The second was a motion encouraging the House to purchase electric vehicle. They say that similar measures taken by many other municipalities in Spain and across Europe are helping to promote the sale of such vehicle s by consumers and so reduce the environmental impact of vehicles fuelled by other means.
EXPATS FACE MORE OBSTACLES WHEN FINANCING VEHICLES Foreign nationals are finding more problems when financing used cars as many banks are still extremely loathe to grant small loans with which to purchase vehicles, this according to representative’s as last weekend’s Almoradí car fayre. Currently a resident foreigner would usually have to guarantee the loan with a property, the value of which would be far beyond the amount requested, otherwise he is extremely unlikely to see any financial transaction accepted. Even this would be likely to take an age according to the president of the local automotive sales group, José María Espinosa. However Industry professional, Roberto Herrero, says that despite these difficulties car sales have still increased by 25% in the last nine months.

FUNDRAISER TO BOOST HAH MOBILITY EQUIPMENT The Fabulous Fashion Show at the wonderful Quesada Country Club raises the amazing amount of 1547 euro on Thursday 12th June. The official start time of the Show to raise funds for the charity was 6.00 p.m. However, FREE Cava was kindly sponsored by Sapphire Properties of Quesada, flowed from 5.30 p.m. as a constant stream of around 200 ladies came through the gates of the Quesada Country Club, looking for a bargain and they were certainly not disappointed as there were some fantastic bargains on offer. No less than 10 ladies with a token male, modeled six outfits each and there were two additional male escorts to assist the ladies up and down the pool steps and the ladies all enjoyed their evening as models. The ladies that took part in the modelling were, Mary, Aida, Sue, Helen, Pam, Christine, Irene, Patricia, Tanya, Louise, Linda, Lynda
and Dave, who thoroughly enjoyed strutting “their Stuff”! The show was compared by Patricia Creighton MBE, who ensured the evening ran smoothly. We were entranced by the delightful melodies of Emily Hullman throughout the evening. There was also a number of stalls for everyone to buy and browse, from shoes to apple turnovers. Raffle prizes were won and the tombola was a very busy table. A most delicious Bar B Que was enjoyed by all. We wish to thank Open Car for supplying the “Life” shopping bags and to Anita and Dave and all the hardworking staff at the Quesada Country club, for making this event an extra special evening. The Ladies from the Paul Cunningham Charity wish to express their thanks for all who attended and support this wonderful charity.
EURO 2000 FOR AFEMAR FROM HELP MMM On Monday 16th June, Bernard Ash and Janneke Chambers from HELP Murcia Mar Menor, presented a cheque for 2000 to the Vice President of A.F.E.M.A.R., Snr. Jose Luis Martinez, in San Pedro. This money will be spent largely on essentials such as daily food. This small unit cares for adults with mental illnesses. Clients are via direct contact and via the Social Services. Because of the very limited funding they can only cater for 10 full time adults and 18 outpatients. However they have still managed to create a caring and happy atmosphere for those in the centre. The services provided are psychotherapy, workshops, music, art, IT training and much more. They also help families get a more informed understanding of the illness and how to better cope with the situation. One client gained 3rd prize in a national art competition held in Madrid - a great success story. Some funding is provided by central office in Murcia but this does not cover building maintenance or materials for the workshops. Snr. Martinez said that their single biggest need was for a large van/minibus to pick up patients from those outlying families, who cannot afford the cost of public transport. The next fundraising event is a
football tournament on the 20th June at Playa de Barnuevo, Santiago de la Ribera. It starts at 10.30 a.m. HELP Murcia Mar Menor is also donating two surplus computers to the centre. Having seen the work they do, this is one organisation that does so much with so little funding.
There will be more mobility equipment available to loan to people seeking assistance from the charity Help at Home Costa Blanca, thanks to a highly successful fund raising evening last week, attended by almost 50 people. The event was organised by the Quesada branch of the charity and the equipment will be on loan from that branch. The dinner was held at the Lo Marabu Restaurant in Doña Pepa, made the more entertaining because there was a special "fine master" in the shape of Barry Waddington, appointed to inflict on the spot fines ranging from 10c to 50cc for all manner of misdemeanors, from disappearing to have a smoke to not wearing a tie. 400€ was raised including a 50€ donation from the bar.

GREEN LIGHT FOR HIGH SPEED TRAIN PRIVATISATION The Spanish Government has given the green light to the privatisation of the high speed train service between Madrid and the east coast, allowing for one more private operator to run on the line, thus providing competition for national train operator RENFE. The initial contract period will run for seven years, after which time the routes will become “fully available” to other operators, on the routes between Madrid and Región de Murcia, Cuenca, Albacete, Alicante, Valencia and Castellón. The initial privatisation process began in July of last year, with routes of high touristic or commercial value being the first to be considered. The objective is to “give the market greater choice of services and have more competitive prices due to increased competition”, according to the Minister of Public Works, Ana Pastor. Pastor explained that a single “authorization certificate” is granted through a public bidding process, to ensure the competence of the operators that attend, and the winner may freely decide on which connections will establish services within the scope of that corridor.
The new operator can also set the frequency of their services and their prices freely. Pastor recalled that the Madrid to Valencia route recorded 6.5 million passengers per year, of which 1.78 were carried by train, 264,000 by air, 3.9 million in private cars and 580,000 by bus, which means that the rail market share is 27.4%. The Ministry plans to commission the Murcia to Madrid high speed route in the middle of next year, following the success of the Madrid to Alicante line, which, since its opening on June 18 of last year, has witnessed a steady growth, reaching an average occupancy of 80%, according to data from RENFE. The minister was convinced that the entry of a new operator will further encourage the use of rail transport and guarantee the capillary network offered by RENFE services throughout the country. The new operator may rent the rolling stock from RENFE, whilst developing its own fleet of trains. According to the minister, the gradual liberalization allows adequate control by the Directors of the quality and safety of services, so that the process has all the guarantees.

MANY BENEFITS ARE ENJOYED BY THOSE WHO HIT THE GYM

BACK PAIN THE MIND & BODY CONNECTION By Penny Wing
The emotional reasons behind why people suffer from back pain Our backs give us support, strength and dignity. On a psycho/emotional level they can represent the place on the body where we want to put feelings or issues that we don’t want to deal with. We feel that if we can’t “see” these issues then neither can others? If you have back pain regularly, is there something you have pushed away that is trying to get your attention?
DISCIPLINE: It is necessary for the persons to be disciplined in life, which would mean that they stick to their plans as much as possible and also avoid the bad chemicals from entering into the bodies, which could be nicotine, alcohol or other narcotic listed drugs as well. When they hit the gyms regularly and are in contact with their mentors who are also their physical trainers, they would receive the necessary motivation to stay on the track to achieve the best results with their bodies, as they would be able to appreciate the best gifts that they would have received in their lives, which happens to be their bodies. BON APPETITE: The persons would have to consume the necessary nutrition to not just stay alive, but also to ensure that the building up of their muscles, bones and the various other organs would be happening as would be required by the natural processes. Therefore, in order to avoid the cravings for the junk food and also eat the balanced diet that is also coupled with the necessary consumption of the liquids, it is necessary for the persons to hit the official 24 hour powerhouse that would enable them to get the proper hunger that would enable them to eat well and live well over a period of time. HAVE PERSONAL GOALS: In order to achieve something properly, the persons
would require a long-term vision and also have the short-term and mid-term benchmarks, such as in the case of weekly changes that are expected out of their bodies. It is necessary for the users to therefore check their current physical state and know their goals to identify the differences in the form of the gaps that have to be filled in properly. This would enable them to chalk out the proper exercise schedule and the mix to ensure that they achieve the best results easily. LOSE WEIGHT: When the persons hit the gyms on a regular basis and ensure that enough exercises are provided to the various parts of their bodies while they are at official 24 hour powerhouse, it is easy for the users to achieve the various results in terms of their physical ability, which would include the loss of the fatty matter, as they would be burning out the fats in an effective manner. This would mean that they would be able to achieve the various goals that they set to ensure that they are void of medical problems related to excessive weight. STAY IN SHAPE: When the persons tend to do the various things that their personal physical trainer has guided, they would be on the right track of achieving the body shape of their dreams easily. Moreover, by continuing with their schedule that would challenge their bodies, it is easy for them to also ensure to stay fit and healthy in terms of enjoying higher strength and stamina that would be sustained by the users in an easier manner. Moreover, it is also macho to exercise and show off the muscles formed.

Issues of survival are very often connected to the back – the responsibility that goes with earning a living, standing on our own two feet or being the ”backbone” of the family. Sometimes you may feel as if you are not “being supported” or someone has “let you down”? These thoughts can develop into back pain or create a weakness in the back area. The upper back can be where we find feelings of fear, anger, pain from the past, feelings of guilt or shame. Is there some anger or resentment you are holding onto? Do you want to turn your back on someone or something? Tight muscles may mean you feel under pressure or are you up against any difficulties?
The middle back is in the centre of the body so issues here could be to do with balance. Are you caught between your own needs or the needs of others? Are you always putting others before yourself? Resentment is also stored in the middle back. Have you “bent over backwards” to help someone and they have let you down? Do you let people walk all over you? The lower back is to do with issues of support, security and survival. If you are feeling insecure about something then the pressure may be felt in the lower back. Do you doubt your own ability to support yourself? Do you feel isolated? Are you trying to do too much? Are you able to ask for help? For a lot of people, pain in the lower back develops as we are reminded that we are getting older e.g. when we retire or when our children leave home. These occasions can remind us of our mortality and can bring up deep fears and insecurity about what lies ahead or about how we feel about our standing in life. STRONG WEEKEND FOR SUPERMOTOLAND BROTHERS
Anthony Ford-Dunn (centre) alongside Spanish Champion Francesco Cucharrera The Supermotoland race team were in Talavera La Real, Badajoz, over the weekend for the second round of the Spanish Supermoto championship with its two riders Anthony and Mat Ford-Dunn. Going into the weekend, both brothers were holding 3rd position in their championship classes and they wasted no time at all in practice to get the best settings from their Advance Moves International Removals sponsored race bikes. When it came to qualifying, Anthony put himself on the first row of the grid, in second position for the Premier SM open class, whilst older brother Mat managed to go one better in the SM35 Master class and found himself in a comfortable Pole position for the Race. Anthony was first to race, and in the first of his three races he was in third position and fighting for the lead with Angel Grau and reigning Spanish Champion Francesco Cucharrera. The three were having a tremendous battle with no quarter given when a small mistake from Cucharrera saw him crash in the dirt section leaving Anthony nowhere to go but into Cucha’s fallen bike and both riders were all of a sudden on the deck. Anthony was first to remount and with his engine still running he was able to restart relatively quickly and set about chasing down the leader. Anthony’s pace was incredible but he just didn’t have enough time left in the race to catch and pass Angel Grau and ended up 2nd at the flag. The second SM open race once again saw the same three riders in a desperate battle for the lead but this time it was Angel Grau’s turn to
make a small error that saw him slide off his bike as he accelerated onto the start finish straight. Anthony made the pass and set after Cucha who had opened a small gap. Despite closing the gap Anthony just wasn’t quite able to make the pass and finished 2nd behind Cucha. The last race of the day saw Cucha and Anthony locked in a race long battle for the lead and despite breaking the lap record Anthony was unable to pass the Reigning Spanish Champion and once again finished a very close second. The day’s results put Anthony in second position on the podium, just missing out on the overall win by one point to Cucha. The result had elevated his position in the Spanish championship to 2nd overall and the team now have until the 3rd round of the Spanish championship on 19th July in Villarcayo, Burgos to find a little more power from Anthony’s bike to get him on terms with Cucha. Older Brother Mat was in dominant form in both of the SM35 Master races and he turned his pole position into two race wins and as well as standing on the top step of the podium at the end of the days racing, he had also elevated himself from 3rd to 1st position in the championship and with a comfortable lead. Competition is fierce in the Master class and once again Mat will be refining his race bike before both brothers race again in the Catalan championship on 22nd June at Alcarras, Catalunya. Race reports and videos can be seen at the teams website www.Supermotoland.com

The Home Captain is responsible for writing any scores of 120 or over for Men and 100+ for Ladies, and this should include the visiting team. Also, the highest Out Shot i.e. Minimum 100 for Men and 75 for Ladies, along with Least Darts etc should also be recorded. Some teams are not writing the full name of the player when recording players for the match, we have several players with the same Christian names but without a surname, we do not know who did what! TORRY ARMY AND CD TORREVIEJA UPDATES By Steve Hibberd Torry Army held their AGM at Casa Ventura last week, finishing just in time for members to watch Spain in World Cup action (no comment!), having devoured a scrummy buffet. It was decided that the cost of membership, should remain at only 5 euros per annum. Although Pat Stewart has stood down as travel officer, coaches for away travel will be running as normal next season, with Darryll Wright taking over the reigns. A Beetle Drive night has been arranged for Sat 19 Jul, at Casa Ventura. The Torry Army office in San Luis, is now closed until Mon 21 Jul. Jeff Scott, director of CD Torrevieja, was invited to inform the meeting of any relevant close season info involving the club. He advised members that season tickets for next season have been reduced to only 90 euros, which for a season of 19 home games, that's a big saving of 100 euros. Training starts on 15 Jul, in preparation for pre season friendlies, of which a visit from Elche has been confirmed. Speaking of Elche, an arrangement is in place for 3 or 4 of their academy players, being available on loan to Torry next season. Although somewhat cagey regarding players coming and goings (and rightly so), Jeff did state that Pastor has unfortunately left the club, due to his relocation to the States. He also indicated that there COULD be a change within the management setup, indicating that an experienced div 3 coach is on the clubs radar - watch this space!
ROJALES NETBALL CLUB - CAMPEONES!! Rojales Netball Club were in action last weekend playing host to teams from Madrid and Murcia. The five competing teams played some great netball with the big game of the day being Rojales versus Madrid A to determine the tournament winners so it started very tensely with both teams sussing one another out. Rojales then got into their stride and with Katie, Ronnie and Tracy starting to dominate the centre court this allowed the shooters of Carly and Sam to concentrate on putting the ball into the net. At the other end of the court Rojales' defence of Claire and Tracey managed to break down the rhythm of Madrid's shooters enabling them only four successful shots. With the game finishing 11-4 to Rojales this meant that they were the overall winners of the tourna-

ment. Quesada's team of Sophie, Donna, Louise, Mercedes, Carol, Jennie and Nikki played good netball switching positions to give two of their young players, Annabel and Neve, experience in their first tournament. They finished 3rd beating Madrid B and Murcia 3-2 and 4-3. The day finished with the presentation ceremony with both the Mayor and Sports Councillor of Rojales. Sam of Rojales and Annabel of Quesada received Best Team Player awards and then came the main one, the Winners Trophy, being presented to Rojales Campeones!! Rojales Netball Club would like to thank Heather and Luke who kept the tournament running smoothly and Pam for umpiring tirelessly throughout the day; and of course Rojales Town Hall for their continued support. SABA SUMMER TRIPLES
VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB
RESULTS AND TABLES FOR FRIDAY 20th JUNE
Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice A very up and down week which we are pleased to report ended on a high with both the Fairways and the Greeners recording impressive victories. Back to Monday our two Men’s Four wood pairs teams were in action with Fred Willshire’s team recording a 3 points to 2 victory over Greenlands by 31 shots to 29 thanks to a win for Martin Foulcer and Richard Lee, while Mike Regan’s team lost out by 2 points to 3 against Quesada despite a win from Dane Howard and Stuart Allman the shot difference was only 1 with Quesada recording 36 shots to our 35. On Tuesday our Premier Twenty League team had a bye so Gail Willshire’s Ladies 4 Wood Pairs team took on Country Bowls and won by 5 points to nil and 50 shots to 24. Gail Willshire and Jenny Bowman won at home while Beryl Regan and Barbara Brown did the business at Country Bowls. On Wednesday our VCL team made the short trip to Greenlands to take on their Jasmines and sad to say the wheels fell off we lost 12 points to nil and 97 shots to 59, what more can we say. However the sun shone on us on Friday the Greeners led the way with a stunning 13 points to 1 victory over San Luis Mosquitoes by 148 shots to 71 with great wins from Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Pat Rafferty, Jenny Chaplin, Brian Pointon and Dave Chaplin, Sheila Cox, Mike Cox and Sue Mynott, Gordon Gowland, Avril Kendall and Geoff Paylor and Bernard Ledger, Audrey and Allan Sinclair, while Lesley Prockter, Pauline Rafferty and Brian Prockter picked up the final point with a draw. This strengthened their position at the top of the Harrier Division so well done everyone. The Fairways however pulled off the shock of the day, starting the day bottom of the league they travelled to Quesada to take on league leaders the Blenheims fully expecting to be in for a tough time and a possible trouncing but nothing could be further from the truth as we only lost on one rink and came away as 11 points to 3 winners by 132 shots to 111, Wins came from Gail Willshire, Andy Leggatt and Fred Willshire, Martin Foulcer, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee, Tony French, Anne Marie Stevenson and Mike Regan and Lin and Charlie Watkins and Jenny Bowman who snatched a win with a 6 on the last end to win by 1 shot. Lynne Bishop, Dane Howard and Eric Bishop fought out a draw to give us our final point. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Country Bowls Club By StJohn Broadhurst Wednesday, 18 June saw the Clarets make the long journey north to play Monte Mar Lords in an evening match in the VCL. Conditions were ideal for bowling, with a sea breeze helping to keep the temperature down, but I think it cooled down the Clarets too much as they went off the boil to lose out by 12 points to nil. It wasn’t, however, as one sided as the score suggests, with two games losing by two points and one game losing out by just one point. Overall shots: Clarets 76 (0 pts) Lords 93 (12 pts). The final game of the week on Friday, 20 June was a home game for the Badgers against Emerald Isle Vulcans and as well as the six league games there were also two friendly games, meaning we were using all eight rinks. It looked like finishing three wins each until four shots on the last end enabled my team to overturn a one shot deficit to win the game and give the Badgers a win by four games to two, as well as winning the long game. Picking up the points were: Doreen Statham, Del Gunning, Karen Kirk 24-9. Jo Wright, Bryan Kirk, John Wright, 28-15. Carole Donnellan, Dennis Birkett, StJohn Broadhurst 22-19. Andy White, Billy Price, John Palmer 32-9. Overall shots: Badgers 129 (10 pts) Vulcans 100 (4 pts). It was also nice to see Pat and Brian Patton watching the game. Brian had an operation on his foot in April and is making steady progress towards a full recovery. We look forward to seeing Brian and Pat back on the green soon. www.countrybowlsclub.com
EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB. Well Friday 13th was a good day for the E.I., first the Vulcans faced Horadada, Ann Ede - Maureen Jeffs & Ron Squires won (15-12) Sheila Wickens - Dave Close & Bill Allen won by (22-8) our best win. Sheila Adams - Bernie Evans & Frank King won (17-16). Elwyn Morris - Alex Fay & Brian Kavanagh won (18-13). Shots 102 - 91 to E.I. Another great result. After the Vulcans came the Victors who were looking to win again, and they did'nt disappoint when they played Monte Mar. Brian Smith - Mike Stacey & Len Fisher won (23 - 21). John Zeller - Reg Fooks & Mel O'Dell won (18-11) Lilly Stewart (great to have you back) Ed Shepherd & Peter Willicott won (18-14). John Jarvis -Barbara Eldred & John Mullarkey won (18-13). The E.I. lost the shots by 101 to 102, but won the match by 8 points to 6. Another good result. The E.I. Held the Presidents Cup comp from sat 14th to mon 16th. It was a great success , enjoyed by all, after 3 great days bowling the final was between Bon Alba & Greenlands. Congratulations to the eventual winners, G. Bater - S. Johnson & M. Fryatt of Greenlands. On Wed 18th the Dukes played Quesada (Valencian League). Lastly sorry to my friend Sheila Wickens, who along with Dave Close got left off the roll of honour last week ( not easy this scribing lark) Happy Bowls every one. Robin (the Happy Scribe)
QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Our SABA Blenheims are still holding the top spot after maintaining good results having played our last three games away. Federated teams are still maintaining a successful record, but this week the Lions had their first loss at home against La Marina, however, the points gained by Lisa and Pete Bonsor in the singles managed to keep us in top position in the Blue Division. Well done to our Tigers this week, who took the top spot in the Red Division having won away at Emerald Isle 9-3. Congratulations also to David Johnson who has joined the noble ranks of the Umpires having passed the recent course! LA SIESTA BOWLS REPORT By Norman Adcroft CBBA Summer Premier 20 League 17th June. .We had mixed fortunes against San Miguel by taking the Lion’s share of the points at home, but only managing one drawn rink away. Losing the shots 157137 it gave us a score of 7-11. Our Winners were, John Moss Singles 21-18, Jeannie Clements with Colin Lloyd, 18-15, Dave Davies, Brian Gardiner skipped by George Richardson 20-15, and our away drawn rink. Carol Broomfield Sue Jordan skipped by Brian Harman 19-19. VCL Green Division 18th June. The wheels fell off our wagon today when the good form we’ve enjoyed so far this season deserted us away to El Rancho... (a blip?) We only picked up two of the twelve points up for grabs and went down 10-2.Our sole winners were Alan Barton and Jean Cooper who had a convincing win in the pairs 238.Our loss didn’t affect our lead we’re still top! SABA Hurricane and Harrier Division 20th Jun. The Wasps had a morning home game against the La Marina navigators and shared the points 7-7. Unfortunately for us though, Jean and Norman Murphy Skipped by Pat Harman, who had battled back from being 14-0 down to 17-17 on the last end, and were holding four and a measure, had the curse of the last wood of the entire match bowled by Skip Bill Jones of La Marina who cut it down to one shot. A super wood. This gave the Navigators a shot win 107-111. Our other two winners were Joy and Brian Gardiner skipped by Brian Fraser and Ramsay Sinclair, Brian Harman Skipped by Jean Cooper. Our drawn rink was Jeannie Clements, George Richardson Skipped by Colin Lloyd. The Hornets narrowly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory losing 6-8 and 98-105 to Horadada Hawks at Horadada. We won three rinks thanks to Hilary and John Clarke with Roy Millward, 16-15, Gill and Ron Sheldon with Rod Edgerton, 19-18 and Johnnie Ryder with Izzie and Bert Bell 21-16. Derek Souter, Pat Baylis and skip Dawn Taylor also won the friendly 19-7. Chicken and Egg Winners 18th June. Chicken Jim White, Wine Brian Thomason and Eggs Johnnie (‘I like Omelettes anyway’) Ryder. RBL LEGIONNAIRES RE ENACT 700 YEAR OLD WAR
The normal scene of a friendly Thursday afternoon bowls roll-up transpired into one of fun on Thursday when The Royal British Legion Legionnaires Bowls Group split their participating members into two competing groups, denominated the Celts and Saxons. The teams comprised of the English (Saxons) competing against the combined Irish, Welsh and predominantly Scottish members (Celts), with 30 players participated in trips over 5 rinks. Exactly 700 years to the month the Scots repelled the English with a resounding victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in the Scottish war of independence, and so history repeated itself on this glorious sunny afternoon at Casa Ventura, with the Celts winning on 3 of the 5 rinks, and the Saxons winning on one and drawing on another. The final tally however reveals that this was yet another resounding victory for the Celts, with their total score reading 99 points to the Saxons 52. A winners trophy was presented to Malcolm Ayton, who captained the Celts, by Brenda
Brown, the Legionnaires' Captain, and each of the 15 members of the Celts contingency also received a congratulatory free drinks voucher. It costs nothing to become a member of the Legionnaires Bowls Group; novices and prospective new members are welcome to come along to our friendly roll-ups at 1:30 on Thursday and Saturday afternoons at Casa Ventura, San Luis, or enquire to Harry Epsom (Sec.) on 966849075.

THE LIONS CHARITY GOLF DAY AT LAS COLINAS GC
(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Playing Summer Golf – Costa Blanca Style’ All golfers be they residents or tourists need to prepare properly before playing golf here on the Costa Blanca during the ‘steamy’ summer months when temperatures are regularly in the high 30 degree range with humidity in the high 70’s.Unless you decide to play early bird or twilight golf you will be playing some of the round when the temperatures are at their hottest and you need to plan accordingly. Unless you are a masochist or something I would always advise that you take a buggy and these are well priced or included in most summer deals by the courses and have plenty of storage space for both food and much needed fluid. Try and avoid the temptation to drink alcohol because the sun will make this go ‘straight to your head’ and in fact makes you de-hydrate quicker and instead carry and drink water or diluted fruit juices which you can put in the freezer overnight so it remains cold and solid for most of the round. You should avoid de-hydration at all costs because it causes energy loss and tiredness but also makes it difficult to focus and concentrate on your golf and remember most importantly the thirst is the last sign of de-hydration, not the first. Take the advantage of shade whenever you can and just a few minutes out of the sun will give your body some recovery and cooling time and remember to apply sun cream (even if not a man thing) and wear a hat. There are now also numerous sports sunglasses which will take away the effect of glare and can reduce headaches, migraine and possibly sunstroke. The courses are generally in excellent condition during the summer months and quieter due to the lower number of players but don’t ruin this wonderful experience by becoming ill on the course. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Today’s competition was the second running of the Lions Charity Golf event which was held at the superb and exclusive Las Colinas Golf & Country Club and our thanks go to them for presenting the course in an excellent condition and for all their assistance both on the day and in numerous meetings leading up to the day. The Lions Charity Organisation is global but our local Torrevieja branch work tirelessly for numerous charitable courses and need as much assistance as possible and we applaud them for their tireless hard work and commitment. There were many local businesses who sponsored the day and raised in excess of €1000 before a ball was struck in anger and they all deserve a well earned mention and include THE LEADER, Comaskey Properties, Spanish Solutions, Specsavers Torrevieja, Paddy’s Point, Ibex Insurance, Costa Blanca Green Fee Services, Sands Bistro, Joni Fitz Distributions, Las Ramblas Property Sales, Europesure Status Insurance, TV Choice Magazine, TKO Radio, Kameeleon, Lo Marabu Bar, Sun Shine Trophies, Iain & Janette Bennett and Mick the Grip. This is truly a golf day and not just a round of golf and while the players were waiting for the scores to be processed they were serenaded by THE VELVETONES who are a local harmony chorus group who perform for private functions and charity and their long hours of practise and dedication paid off as they managed to keep the golfers entertained for 30 minutes or more with a variety of songs from ‘wind beneath my wings’ to ‘consider yourself’ from the musical Oliver. Many thanks ladies and well done! While the players waited with baited breath for the presentation we held an auction of green fees which raised €900 on the day and all of
these green fees were received via Costa Blanca Green Fee Services and were provided free of charge by the following local courses Alicante, Alenda, Altorreal, Bonalba, El Plantio, Font del Llop, Hacienda Del Alamo, La Peraleja, La Serena, Las Colinas, Lo Romero, Nike IRM, Roda and Vistabella. Once again a big thank you to you all. Now onto the golf!!! On the day we had a total of 58 players chasing a variety of prizes with the first three players receiving trophies provided by THE LEADER and the overall winner being presented with a shield which will be held at Las Colinas which is the planned ‘home’ for the event in future years. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – John Chatham - 35 points 2nd – Alan Masters – 35 points 3rd – Nigel Cotton – 34 points 4th – Bob McShane – 34 points 5th – Brian Burnard – 33 points 6th – Seamus Martin – 33 points 7th – Dave Marriott – 32 points 8th – Mervyn Williams – 32 points 9th – Martin Fitzpatrick – 30 points Nearest Pin on Hole 14 – Tony Hall Longest Drive Hole 12 – Daniel Hillman Ladies Prizes – Sharon Smith – 34 points The day was a huge success overall and while the till rolls are still being checked the Lions Club informed me that they expect the final amount raise to be in excess of €2000 and so once again a big thank you to everyone involved on the day. LO MARABU GOLF SOCIETY
THE COMMITTEE TROPHY
At Villaitana on 12th June 2014. In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Every year our golf society heads off to Benidorm for a two day away trip and this year was no different despite the numbers being dramatically impacted by the football world cup, hollow tined greens and our sponsor opening their new bar venture at the same time. A small but happy group of golfers arrived at Villaitana (Levante) to find the course in good condition despite the recent hollow tining programme and this reflected in some good scores on the day The winning scores on the day were: 1st – Andy Jones – 43 pts, 2nd – Mike Probert – 36 pts 3rd – Dave Bensley – 35 pts, 4th – Phil Johnson – 35 pts 5th – Winston Blackwood – 33 pts, 6th – Terry Drayton – 32 pts Benidorm Buddha – Jack Fanning – 29 pts Putting Competition – Terry Drayton We headed into Benidorm for an overnight stay with some good food and lively entertainment. IAN CAWTHRA MEMORIAL TROPHY @ LA SERENA ON TUESDAY 10TH JUNE
The society gathered to play this annual event in memory of Ian Cawthra at its new location. The Cawthra family would like to thank every member of ALL societies who turned out to play in Ian’s memory, it was nice to see some familiar faces. We arrived at La Serena with the weather a little overcast but it soon cleared and rewarded us with a beautiful day for golf. We played a pairs Texas scramble which is traditional for this event, it being the event and venue that was played when we heard the sad news. We all met on the terrace at the golf course for a pre game drink to the memory of not only Ian but all the close family and friends we have lost of late. Then the instructions we given and all set off to have a wonderful game of golf. Leading the way was the defending champions Dave Naylor and Ken Farrow, followed by the rest of the society. We all returned back to our home base The Orange Tree Bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig for the presentation and the wonderful buffet provided by the Orange Tree. Thanks must go to Chris, Viv, Nigel, Hannah, Lilly, Jodie and Rhona for providing this and the excellent service and making the day even more special.
We then made the presentation to the winners, thanks must also go to our sponsors for the day for providing prizes for the winners and the after presentation raffle. Namely The Orange Tree, La Serena Golf Club, Mike the grip and the Cawthra family who gave a bottle of wine to every player in Ian´s memory. The winners of the trophy this year was a family affair, Chris and Roger Blown (as in clown lol) with a net score of 67.5. The picture shows the brothers accepting the trophy from Ian´s wife, Linda. 2nd were Martin Lowe and Simon Sharples with 68.0 and 3rd were last years champions Dave Naylor and Ken farrow with 69.5. The scores were very close and no more than 10 between 1st and last. EL PLANTIO 2 GS The temperature was very pleasant for a game of golf, todays competition was the Waltz, where teams of 3 players count 1 score on the 1st, 2 on the 2nd and 3 on the 3rd hole, then back to one score on the 4th and so-on. there were 18 players which gave us 6 teams. Some good scores were recorded today with the 3 teams that were placed all under par. My team included Rod Loveday who has recently had his handicap cut and today he showed what he was capable of by playing 4 under his new handicap, the other member of my team was was a visitor, Tony Boyd, who also played very well and interestingly he is a member of the "On Course Foundation" offering injured men and women of our armed forces the opportunity to partake in golf one of the few sports in which disabled people can compete with their able counterparts. Results: Nearest the pin hole 5: Roger Marshall, Hole 9: Rod Loveday, 3rd place Kenny Reddington, Brian Watson & Gordon Wayne with 73 pts, 2nd place Roger Marshall, Mel Hope & Frank Stanhope with 75 pts. 1st place John O'Brien, Rod Loveday & Tony Boyd with 82 pts.
