A Roundabout that encourages drivers to select an exit before entering - and stick to it

DUTCH TURBO-ROUNDABOUT TO BE TRIALED IN ALICANTE

It sounds like something destined for the future, but the fact is that the turbo-roundabout or turboglorieta is already a reality in several Spanish cities. Devised by the Dutch to improve the capacity of very congested roundabouts studies show that they improve the flow of traffic whilst, at the same time, reducing the number of accidents. Now the municipal group UPyD are proposing the construction of a trial roundabout in Alicante, starting at a location by the University of Alicante, where la avenida de la universidad, the A-70 and the A-77a converge. The concept is simple but

novel. The lanes of traffic will have plastic separators, which will encourage traffic to stay in the appropriate lane, and encourage vehicles to slow down to do so. The layout also gives cyclists priority and means they are in the line of sight of drivers when vehicles exit the roundabout. Although cars will be able to cross lanes, they will get a ‘bumping’ sensation reminding them to reduce their speed. The result is that lane changes and side collisions between vehicles are avoided. The trial roundabout by the university is currently a major point of congestion, at certain times of the day suffering from major traffic jams. It is one of the most important junctions in the city. At any one time of the year the University of Alicante has 26,000 students enrolled in addition to 1,259 employees and 2,331 administrative staff and scholars. This volume of people makes the junction a high-traffic location. Continued on Page 2

Continued From Page One The junction is also a connection point for the city with many northern towns of the province, including San Vicente from where many people travel into Alicante for their work. "The main benefit of these turbo-roundabouts is to prevent traffic jams forming and therefore provide a much safer flow of traffic," said UPyD spokesman, Fernando Llopis. In an official statement presented to Parliament, the politician has asked the City Council to urge the Ministry of Public Works to make modifications and changes to improve the traffic flow at the University roundabout, with the turboroundabout as an interesting option study. In Spain, there are already several cities that have this system of roundabouts in place. The first was installed in Grado (Asturias) in 2009 since which time they have also been implemented in Oviedo, Mallorca and Talavera. They are a regular feature in the Netherlands, and have also been implemented in several other European countries, such as Germany and the UK where

Monday, 30th June, 2014 they are currently being trialed in Bedford. And for me, well, anything that can make the management of roundabouts here in Spain safer for motorists and cyclists will be a most welcome benefit, as traffic islands seem to be a complete mystery to many drivers. Amazingly, despite being the only country in Europe to have such a regulation, the authorities at the DGT continue to accept that the inside lane of the roundabout serves no legal or practical purpose and where it is quite correct for a driver in the right hand lane to turn left, often with no indication, the result often being the screeching of quickly applied foot brakes from vehicles travelling in the left hand lane with the intention of carrying straight on. A reminder that whilst rules of the road are seldom enforced in Spain, they do exist and where, on a roundabout, the car in the right hand lane always has priority, even to the extent of completing a 360° turn, without need of any indication.

THE ROLLING STONES AND SPAIN

With 21 ‘sell out’ concerts performed in the country in 38 years it is not difficult to see that The Rolling stones have a special appeal for the people of Spain but to understand the origins of that attraction you have to go back to the June 11, 1976 when The Plaza Monumental de Barcelona was the venue for the group as they became the very first International Band to visit the country following the death of Franco. At the time there was no shortage of unrest with lots of tension as police in their riot gear quelled political demonstrations throughout the surrounding areas both during and after the landmark show. Last Wednesday’s concert, at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, where despite the collapse of the on-line system, 80,000 tickets sold out within just 11 hours of going on sale,

was a much more traditional affair. Despite the soaring demand, no longer is attendance at any concert by Jagger, Richards and company, a matter of life or death. But because the Stones are the Stones, as the most long-lived rock band on the planet jumped up and down on the stage at the Bernabeu for possibly the very last time, 38 years and 14 days since their first performance in the country, for the generations of people that have enjoyed their songs live, families united by rock and countless memories, their Satanic Majesties, Mick Jagger (guitar and lead singer), Keith Richards (first guitar), Ron Wood (rhythm guitar) and Charlie Watts (drums), altogether add up to 285 years of age, though their energy onstage made them seem like a bunch of 20-year-olds riding the crest of the wave.

TORREVIEJA ASK PROVINCE FOR STREET RENEWAL INVESTMENT FUNDS In protest at their grievances the Policia Local publicly crucified a police officer on Friday and raised him up to the window of the Torrevieja plenary hall while the Council were in session.

aving faced criticism this week from the Los Verdes Green Party of Torrevieja over the lack of action on the promenade to the south of the city, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, announced on Thursday that the town hall has asked the Provincial Council of Alicante for 420,000 euro in order to carry out repair work and investment in much needed infrastructure fixtures. From the total budget, 240,000 euro is destined to Avenida Gregorio Marañón, which will include redeveloping 3,575 metres of route, including the renewal of pavements to improve the pedestrian access to the south of the city centre. The plans will also include green areas, rest zones and shaded areas to provide protection from the sun, whilst also ensuring accessibility is maintained for those with mobility problems. There is 180,000 euro budgeted to renew the street lights in the Barrio del Acequión, where 267 antiquated and energy hungry lights will be replaced with energy efficient LED units, which consume 60% less than their older equivalents, saving an esti-

H

mated 12,000 euro per year. There has been no mention of other areas where lights are constantly failing, but the lack of illumination in zones such as the residential area near Carrefour also saves money, given the amount of time the lights have remained failed at night. Meanwhile, Friday´s plenary meeting was not without the usual protests, but this month saw a different take on how members of the local police are trying to get the mayor´s attention to the plight of their continual grievances over working time and shift patterns. In previous months, officers had appeared topless in protest, some facing disciplinary action. They have written to the mayor personally and asked for dialogue to be open, and now, they publicly crucified a police officer. In fact, the police officer was a Torrevieja resident actor and comedian, Fernando Esteso, who had been dressed in a police uniform, attached to a crucifix and raised on a crane to the window of the plenary hall. The meeting was halted for 15 minutes for which Eduardo Dolón commented that the action was illegal and those involved would face the consequences, as measures against them would be taken.

SUPERMARKET CHAIN ASKED TO W AIVER CHARGES BY CHARITY Popular Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona, famed for looking after its staff and offering cheap, no-frills groceries to consumers, has come under fire from a charity which provides breakfasts to needy families and children over their delivery charge policy.

Inés García de Paco, president of the Asociación Menuda Vida de Perros, explains that the “No Breakfast” project is aimed at those families who

are struggling to find food during these trying economic times, and so they send food parcels to those who qualify. However, for every consignment they send, Mercadona charges the charity 7,21 euro, which, if the supermarket chain were to waiver or reduce, would mean that the association would be able to provide even more food for families. “My association is small”, Inés explains, and with “very limited resources”, but “if Mercadona didn´t charge me money every time I send a car, a little more could help more families”. A petition to put pressure on Mercadona has been set up on the change.org website, already with around 10,000 supporting signatories. In March of this year, Mercadona announced that from their near 20 billion euro turnover, net profit registered in 2013 was 515 million euro, a 1% increase on 2012, equivalent to 2.9% of sales.

NEW BAKERY FOR EVERY MERCADONA SUPERMARKET Following an investment of 26 million euros Mercadona last week unveiled a new bakery section, each boasting state of the art facilities, in every one of its stores. The initiative is part of the company strategy to promote its new model which concentrates on the sale of fresh produce, with its new ovens, a revamped fish market, fruit and vegetable displays and modern butchery all situated close together. The new bakery section now includes a wide assortment of breads, savory and sweet specialties, sweet pastries and cakes. The range has been adapted to the tastes and preferences of each locality and will feature far more local produce than has previously been the case. The new measures have required additional training of 4,550 employees, 303 in the province of Alicante, an investment in their education of around

one million euros while the investment in equipment and fittings, as well as changes to many stores, have cost the company an additional EUR 25 million.

WALK OUT BY ELCHE SHOE WORKERS

Shop stewards representing Elche’s footwear industry agreed last Wednesday to call their members out on a second strike in mid-July. As talks broke down with employers, union leaders said there can be no agreement while bosses continue to breach the agreements signed in 2012, when wages were frozen, which agreed to a pay increase of 0.6% in 2013 and a further 0.4 % rise this year. Meanwhile, employers are refusing to accept union

claims saying “there is a problem with their interpretation.” Despite employers calling a further meeting for this coming Friday, José Antonio Macia representing the UGT, says that he is convinced that "this is nothing more than a delaying tactic so as to avoid a strike,” and “that it makes no sense to continue negotiations with employers when we regularly see them reporting increased profits, and that is why we are not willing to back down."

FLAGS MAKE NEWS IN ORIHUELA

The mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, along with the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, both from the Los Verdes green party of Orihuela, were present at Cala Capitán on Friday to raised the quality standard flags on the beaches of the Orihuela Costa. The standards of the Orihuela Costa beaches are amongst the highest in the country

As the beaches now collectively have 7 Blue, 11 Qualitur and 5 “Q” for quality flags, the standards in Orihuela are once more confirmed, although Scheurer said that it is her aim to do more and continue to improve the facilities, cleanliness and standards of the beaches, which will once again face an audit by the relevant administrative bodies. Orihuela has the highest concentration of Blue Flag beaches on the Mediterranean coast, as well as the highest number of “Q” for quality flags in Valencia. Cala Capitán has already undergone extensive work on the north side, where the footpath has now been created, along with stairs down to the beach, making a continual walkway for pedestrians wishing to visit the beach from that side, something not possible before. Scheurer also explained how the lifeguards will be present until the 1st of October now, and the town hall would like to extend the service further, should the budget allow. Orihuela´s recreational complex at Pinar de Bonanza will host a children's summer camp in July and August, with adventurous facilities

and lots of educational fun promised by the councillor for the environment, Manuel Gallud from the Los Verdes green party, in conjunction with the council´s education department. In the wildlife-rich grounds, surrounded by pine trees, a zip-wire, archery and a host of other games will be practised, in a facility that has already welcomed 1,500 people since it opened earlier this year. The camp is aimed at children between 6 and 14 and will run from 08:30 in the morning until 14:00, with a possibility for the children to remain to eat and even stay until 19:00 at night. The school is also run with bilingual staff, who speak both Spanish and English. The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martínez, has announced that during the months of July and August there will be two tourist information points situated on the beaches of playas Flamenca and La Glea, to provide more information on the attractions in Orihuela in order to promote both the sun and sand elements of Orihuela, as well as the cultural activities of the city. With these two posts, the Orihuela Costa will now have a total of four tourist information offices, including the established centres in the town hall at Playa Flamenca and the Zenia Boulevard. In order to provide the service, the town hall are employing three people, two of whom will be full-time for six months, the third on a part-time basis in July and August and will all be proficient English speakers, as well as Spanish. The beach information points will open from 11:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00, whereas the town hall office will open from 09:00 to 14:00, and the Zenia Boulevard office from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 22:00. An army of workers has been seen moving through the streets of the Orihuela Costa, part of a team of previously unemployed residents who were given the opportunity for work through a scheme managed by the councillor for employment, Manuel Gallud of the Los Verdes green party. They have already been clearing streets of weeds, which will then be treated to slow down further growth, before they move onto some of the parks and gardens which don´t fall under a current maintenance contract. Martina Scheurer, the councillor for the coast, explained that the teams will be working on the Orihuela Costa for the

next 3 months, right through the summer period.

On Saturday the 5th of July, a telescope will be set up at Playa Flamenca, where a qualified guide will offer information and pointers to allow visitors to the coast to observe the night sky. The event will start at 10 in the evening, will be free of charge, and everybody is welcome to simply turn up, without booking, to enjoy the visual spectacle that nature offers on the night, weather permitting. On the 5th of July, the moon will be in its first quarter and around that time, comet UQ4 will be around, as well as Venus and Mars both being visible.

Orihuela show their support for World Gay Pride Day which is celebrated on 28 June. The town hall balcony in Orihuela has once again been adorned with a rainbow flag, in order to show support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities of the municipality, in celebration of World Gay Pride day. The government had already taken the steps in May as part of the worldwide celebrations against homophobia, but the 28th of June is a globally recognised date for the gay community in recognition of the revolt against persecution of the gay community during the Stonewall riots in New York. An exhibition entitled “Human rights and sexual freedom” opened at the María Moliner library as part of the event, which the councillor for equality, Emilio Zaplana, explained as important for “the government is to try to reflect on this issue” with ten real stories of people who were imprisoned, tortured and even killed because of their sexual orientation.

BEACH BONFIRE PARTY ENDS IN TRAGEDY

As thousands of people took to light fires on the beaches of the Valencia community to mark the traditional midsummer festival of the fiesta de la Noche de San Juan, the night did not pass without tragedy, with at least one death and another seriously injured by fire. A man believed to have been in his 60´s drowned in the sea of Valencia, at around 9pm on Monday night. The emergency coordination centre were alerted to the facts and sent emergency teams to the beach at Las Arenas. The medics attended but could do nothing other than confirm the death of the man. An autopsy will determine the cause of death. In view of the fact that this event was held at night, it is doubtful that lifeguards would be present on any beach in Spain. Another partygoer on the Cádiz beach at La Línea de la Concepción decided to ignore advice and logic, pouring petrol over his bonfire, which he then stood on top of. It is believed that a spark from a firework or sparkler ignited the fuel, resulting in the pile of wood bursting into flames, throwing the ban onto the sand, where he too was engulfed in fire. He suffered burns to 29% of his body and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

However, tragedy and injury were considered by many to be not without benefits, as in Alicante alone, the weeklong event has been calculated to have been worth 45 million euro in additional income to the hotels, bars and restaurants who welcomed the visitors. The Alicante provincial tourism department estimates that the 1.3 million people who came specifically for the event is partly due to the two weekends involved this year, and the increase in train passengers brought to the area. A campaign is being considered to keep the main event to a weekend, irrespective of the day that the night of the 23rd falls on. Prior to the event, there had been discussions and threats of strikes by the emergency services over the amount of work involved, and, quite coincidentally, the main event fell the night before the Spanish government was to launch its summer campaign action plan on how they intend to deal with the risk of forest fires through the summer.

NEW MUM’S LOOK AWAY NOW In Castrillo de Murcia (near Burgos), a village in Northern Spain, rather a strange annual celebration took place last weekend when, as part of the local Corpus Christi celebrations, known as El Salto del Colacho (the devil's jump) or simply El Colacho, men dressed as the Devil (known as the Colacho) jump over babies born during the previous twelve months of the year who lie on mattresses in the street. The strange idea behind the 400 year celebration is that the babies, all born within the last 12 months, are cleansed of original sin. The Brotherhood of Santísimo Sacramento de Minerva organizes the week-long festivities which culminate on Sunday when the Colacho jumps over the babies on the mattresses placed on the procession route traversing the town. The origins of the tradition are unknown but it is said to cleanse the babies of original sin, ensure them safe passage through life and guard against illness and evil spirits. In recent years, Pope Benedict has asked Spanish priests to distance themselves from El Colacho, and to downplay the tradition’s connection with Catholicism. The Church still

teaches that it is baptism by water, not a giant leap by an airborne devil, which cleanses the soul of original sin.

GOT TO PICK A PEPPER OR TWO

The annual pepper picking season for the Murcia region has already begun a month earlier than normal, due to the extremely mild winter and spring. With an abundance of crops, all said to be of high quality, it is hoped that the price will be cheaper to the consumer as a result. However, cheaper prices also mean less income for the farmers, and a risk to future crops if they don´t make the sale. To complicate matters further, the Murcia season, which normally begins in July, has now also overlapped that of Almería, resulting in considerably higher availability now than ever before. According to Ángel García Izquierdo, from the Murcia based company Soltir, “The campaign overlaps with Almería, which still has substantial crops available, leading to oversupply, which, within an economically depressed market such as Spain's, resulted in sharp price drops at the beginning of the campaign, especially for Lamuyo peppers. The peppers are largely grown for the domestic market, as neighbouring European countries also have their own crops, which have also arrived early in a number of other countries. On the other hand, bell peppers are easier to sell to the export markets according to García, but only around a quarter of their crops are of this variety, although increasing every year. “Bell peppers are

easier to sell in the export markets, where we have a favourable competitive position over the Netherlands, as they have higher production costs and are also the ones setting the sale price of peppers in Europe. It is certainly a more profitable product for us. Additionally, we continue making progress year after year in terms of quality and safety and we are at a very similar level as Dutch peppers”. Currently, the bell pepper export market shows favourable returns in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The situation is not too bleak however, as last year, the company considered their campaign to have been “unbeatable”, whereas the forecast for this year is expected to be “acceptable”. From their 58,000 square metres of land in San Cayetano near to San Javier, they grow peppers and melons in the summer and broccoli and artichokes in the winter.

SEVEN ARRESTED FOR THEFT OF ORANGES Officers of the Guardia Civil have arrested seven people for the theft of over 300,000 kilos of oranges just north of Alicante in Ribera Baixa and Valldigna. A further 7 individuals were released pending further investigations. Detainees and defendants were changed with the falsification of a large number of documents needed to carry out the sale of oranges, which included more than 300,000 kilos that had been obtained illegally. The arresting Officers belong to a detachment of Guardia who focus on agriculture, preventing the theft and illegal trade of farm products and related commodities Since late March, the officers have been investigating the falsification of documents which have regularly been found accompanying sales of farm products of illegal origin. Between 9 and 16 June, they were able to determine the alleged involvement of 13 people, eleven men and two women, aged 18 to 56 years, of Algerian, Belorussian, Spanish and Ecuadorian nationality.

MURCIA'S HOR TICULTURAL EXPOR TS UP 13 % The President of the Region of Murcia, Alberto Garre, said last week that sales of Murcian fruit and vegetables to European markets have increased by 13 % compared to last year and by 9 % since the previous quarter, despite the overall deceleration of Spain's horticultural exports. The leader pointed out that the company Sol y Tierra del Campo de Cartagena (Soltir) "gives employment to between 2,500 and 5,000 people, depending on whether it is the planting or the harvesting season, which is truly appreciated by the regional government, earning its full support." He highlighted "the degree of responsibility and solidarity of Soltir's growers, who are also exemplary in terms of cultivation

techniques and water use." The president stressed that the sector continues to show signs of being very active and, in the case of Soltir, the revenue generated by its marketed production amounts to about 33 million Euro; a slight increase compared to the previous season. Garre encouraged them to continue working on the improvement of their competitiveness and their yields. He recalled that, thanks to the efforts made since its launch in 2002, Soltir has managed to have "54,000 square metres of crops, to provide employment to so many people and to reach a production of 110 million kilos per year."

Among those arrested was the alleged perpetrator of a crime of forgery, who owns a Ribera Baixa company which buys and sells citrus products. He was charged with falsifying invoices, so that the amount of oranges billed was significantly increased above those delivered The remaining defendants were engaged at different levels of the fraud most with the theft of oranges in different localities, their transportation and sale. In Gandia, a similar fraud saw the arrest of three coowners and an employee of a company who also purchase and sell agricultural products, in the region of Valldigna. They have been charged with the crimes of forgery and receiving stolen goods, while another four arrested were said to be responsible for the alleged theft of Benairjó oranges. The total of oranges siezed in the two crimes totals more than 300,000 kilos. Meanwhile the proceedings are now being dealt with by the Court of Instruction No. 4 in Sueca and the Court of Gandia while further Investigations are still ongoing.

POLICE EXHIBITION TO TERRORIST VICTIM COLLEAGUES The Spanish National Police have opened an exhibition in Madrid dedicated to the memory and honour of the 186 officers killed in terrorist attacks throughout a bleak time in the country. As part of the exhibition, a perpetual flame burns in memory of those who fell for their duty, accompanied by the names of all of those who lost their lives. A projected image of each of those who were killed is on an accompanying display, with touch screens

offering a brief biography of each and every one of them. The exhibition also covers four key elements in the relationship between the police and terrorists, under the titles of “Truth”, “Justice”, “Memory” and “Dignity”. Not only is the attention given to those who paid the ultimate price, but also the devastating effect the losses has on those left behind, the family and friends of the victims. A series of panels with both written and graphic information are distributed throughout the campus, along with cabinets where different items seized from terrorist gangs are displayed, including weapons, explosives and exposed documents. This information and material is supplemented with video images on television screens for each of the thematic areas of exposure. The free and open exhibition is available to visit by members of the public until Friday the 31st of July, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00, at the Centro de Altos Estudios Policiales del Cuerpo Nacional de Policía, located in the Plaza de Carabanchel, Madrid. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy unveiled a memorial last Wednesday at the Centre for Higher Police Studies to members of the Spanish Police Force who have died in terrorist attacks The President of the Government conveyed the recognition and gratitude of the government and the institutions and people of Spain to the Spanish Police Force. "Spanish society cannot and never will forget those who were on the side of peaceful co-existence, those who have defended and maintained our democracy and those who have laid down their lives to guarantee the security and liberty of us all,” he said.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The Expat Terrorist xpat life is always full of surprises in Spain and the Canary Islands; nothing is ever quite what it seems, and this week has been no exception. I received a letter from the bank that I have been with since we moved to Spain demanding information. Parts of the letter were written in red ink as well as block capitals, which I assumed was meant to stress those parts that I should fret about most. This letter was all part of a curt communication pointing out that under “Law 10/2010 of 28 April on the Prevention of Money Laundering and the Funding of Terrorism”, the bank had an obligation to check my identity and professional activity. The letter then went on to say that if I did not comply with their demands, my account would be “restricted”, meaning that I could not use their Internet banking and other services. Fortunately, there is no capital punishment in Spain at the moment; otherwise I am sure that they would have threatened that as well. The letter also demanded payslips, social security employment records (vida laboral), my annual VAT return for the last quarter, or proof of having paid the last social security self-employed contribution. I am not registered, nor do I pay VAT, my accountant deals with social security contributions and I have not seen a vida laboral for at least five years. Now I am all for countering terrorism and money laundering, but I doubt many offenders would use my local branch. This delightful let-

E

ter was from a bank that I have used and trusted since I first set foot in Spain as an expat, and the branch knows me well. Clearly, this was another of the games that we have to play in Spain from time to time, which I am well used to. It can be endless fun, if viewed from the right angle, but it is no good arguing with the system or getting angry. One merely has to appear humble and confused, smile a lot, claim insanity or not understanding the language. Above all, one has to swamp the system with paperwork, and lots of it. I learned many years ago that Spanish bureaucracy loves nothing more than paper. One has only to wave a sheet of A4 across the eyes of a Spanish bureaucrat or bank official, and watch their facial expression glaze over, and turn into one of immense and immediate greed. These officials are well trained and can smell a document in your possession from a hundred paces. They snatch the document from you and, if you are fortunate, hurry off to the nearest photocopier to produce at least three copies, returning the original. If one is naive or unfortunate, they will grab the original and it is never seen again. This is very dangerous and inconvenient, and I learned many years ago NEVER to produce an original document for any bank or government official. The second thing that all Spanish officials have is a love affair with the fax machine, and it is more than likely that any document that you surrender will end up in one. Back to the letter from my bank. I spent most of the day producing a box file of photocopies of all the documents that I thought would interest them. In view of their huge appetite for paperwork of any description, I have also learned never to volunteer anything, but to let it be requested, and certainly not to hand over a complete box file voluntarily. I placed all the documents in a carrier bag with my shopping. When I arrived at the bank, I met a charming young bank clerk, who seemed anxious to attend to my every need and, in particular, get me to sign up for a loan that I didn't need. I handed over the offending letter; he smiled and nodded knowingly, and asked for my residency document and passport. CARS OF THE 70’S NEARLY EXTINCT By Nick Ireland According to WeLoveAnyCar.com, the largest group of drivers on British roads are people born in the 60s and 70s. Cars of their youth are almost extinct. My Uncle once owned two Alegros at the same time but there are now fewer than 22 Bond Bugs, 161 Austin Allegros and just 3,482 Ford Cortinas, once the UK’s most popular car, still registered to drive on British roads. These figures don’t include those cars where the car is ‘unregistered’ or taken off the road via a SORN notice to the DVLA. In fact, there are thought to be more Allegros in classic car collections than actually licensed to drive on the roads. 2.6 million Cortinas were sold in the UK so just 0.1% of the Ford success story remains on the roads. There are 4,119 Ford Sierras, the Cortina replacement, still licensed of the 1.3 million sold in the UK. Specialist models such as the Ford Sierra Cosworth (RS and Sapphire) tend to be better preserved than the average Sierra with 956 still licensed – that’s over 23% of all Sierra models remaining. Even cars that were built much later can be rare. Whilst Renault changed the people carrying market when they built the Espace, they didn’t achieve the same success with the Avantime. There are 23,049 Renault Espace models but only 273 Avantimes still registered for British roads. Another 70s creation, the Renault Fuego, has just 19 cars on the road. Using Government statistics, the car review site has made it easy for anyone to look at how many cars are exactly like the one they drive or one they used to drive. A spokesman for the website WeLoveAnyCar.com said, “Our easy-to-use site allows anyone to look at how exclusive their cars are

and in some cases drivers might be surprised to find they are one of a handful driving the model they own.” Even current car owners can be in a very exclusive group. There are only 6 owners of the Audi Q7 SE TFSI 333 QUATTRO A model on all the roads in the UK and just 9 owners of the Peugeot 308 SPORTIUM E-HDI S-A variant. Just make a nice cuppa and enjoy discovering how many of the cars from your youth still exist. Some of mine include only three Ford LTD’s, 12 Fiat 850 Specials, 20 Vauxhall Viva 1256 Deluxe’s, 445 Ford Escort Mexico’s, 69 Mercedes Benz 200T and 242 Spitfire MK IV. And if you want to know how many James Bond Aston Martin DB5’s are left, to put you out of your misery, there are just 276 for budding 007’s and 25 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am’s, circa Smokey and the Bandit.

FAME AND FORTUNE NOT ENOUGH FOR MODEL TURNED NUN While many of us dream of such lives, one young lady with fame and fortune very much in her grasp has thrown it all away for a rather more austere life in a nunnery. Olalla Oliveros, a famous Spanish model and actress, revealed last week just why she hasn’t been seen on the catwalk for a while. After experiencing an 'internal earthquake' during a visit to a religious sanctuary in Portugal she has spent the last 4 years as a nun in the Order of Saint Michael. Oliveros has appeared in many high-profile advertising campaigns on TV and in magazines and so it came as somewhat as a surprise to many of her fans when she revealed that she has abandoned her celebrity lifestyle and joined the Order of Saint Michael as a nun where she now goes by the name of Sister Olalla del Sí de María. Sister Olalla has so far been reluctant to describe her exact motivations for the lifestyle change but told local daily El Diario Cordobes that the decisive moment occurred while she was visiting the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima in Portugal. A photo on The Christian Post’s Facebook page showed Oliveros (second from right) looking radically different from the poses she took in her modeling days, wearing a blue sackcloth uniform and veil but no makeup.

Ask the Optician The Effect of Sun Damage

We’ve asked the experts from Specsavers Opticas to answer your questions on sun damage. Q: Can the sun really damage my eyes? A: I’m afraid so, experts say that teenagers and young adults in their 20s and 30s, who are exposed to sunlight around five hours per day with no hat or glasses, double their chances of developing early age related macular degeneration and other problems so it’s something to think about in a sunny country like Spain. Children under 10 in particular should be protected as much as possible, as children’s eyes are not able to block as much UV as

adults’ eyes can, and unfortunately the eyes never really recover from it. Q: What are the main dangers of sun damage? A: There are a number of common eye problems linked to exposure to UV rays: Cataracts Macular degeneration Eyelid skin cancer Pinguecula - small, yellowish, slightly raised lesions that form on the surface of the white part of the eye. They can cause irritation, a feeling that there is something in the eye, and dry eyes. Pterygium - scar tissue that can grow over the surface of the eye and impair the vision. Q: What can I do to protect

my eyes? A: The best protection is from glasses with total UV protection and a hat. We recommend you follow these rules when choosing glasses: Check sunglasses comply with UNE-EN 1836:2006 + A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400. Invest in photochromic lenses that instantly adapt to light changes, darkening in bright light. Alternatively, get prescription lenses tinted to minimize the amount of UV rays that reach your eyes. Consider polarized lenses to decrease the amount of glare, which can dazzle and strain your vision Choose large or wraparound glasses There are five Specsavers on the Costa Blanca in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja and Guardamar. www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

The birth rate in the Valencia region in 2013 fell by 7.1% in the last year, with 3,393 births less than during 2012, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE) in their recent study on the natural movement of population and basic demographic indicators. The rate of decline is slightly above the national average, which stands at 6.4%. Thus, while in 2013 there were a total of 44,181 births in 2012 the figure was 47,574. Two years earlier, in 2010, the number of newborns was 51,684. The other significant figure to fall below the national average was that of deaths. Whilst births fell by 7.1%, deaths in Valencia also fell by 4.3%, a full percentage point below the national average of 3.3%. The death toll was recorded as 40,501, showing a natural population growth of 3,680 people. Thus, the Region now becomes the fifth fastest growing in the country, behind Madrid (22,977), Andalucia (15,666), Catalonia (11,010) and Murcia (6,007). In 2013, throughout the whole of Spain, births dropped for the fifth consecutive year, with only 425,390 new births, 6.4% lower than the previous year and continuing the downward trend, which since 2008 now exceeds 18%, reflecting the progressively aging population. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), a broad view of the demographic future of the country shows a decline in the number of births, fewer children per woman, an increase in the average age at which women have their first child and the low-

est number of women of childbearing age. As such, recent data is not encouraging and shows that the natural growth of the population, ie, the difference between births and deaths in 2013, fell by 30.7% to 36,181 people, the lowest recorded figure since the year 2000. Despite this data, the number of deaths fell by 3.3%, the infant mortality rate stood for the first time below 3 children per thousand (2.8) and life expectancy is the highest ever with 82.8 years (80 years for men and 85.6 for women). According to the INE the decline in births is due to lower fertility, ie the decrease in the number of children per woman, which in 2013 stood at 1.26 (1.32 in 2012). The demographic future is a gradual increase in the average age of the population so perhaps it is now time to stop criticizing the indicators and exploring the benefits of an aging population. Alternatively the only way to avoid it in the long term is to have far more children and die young. We have tried hard to escape from this way of life and, now that we have, we should be looking toward the benefits. But it might be worth remembering that not all people aged 16 to 64 are working and pay income tax, indeed far from it, particularly here in Spain However, an increasing number of older people are working, and many of the others do not require pensions or other welfare. Let’s not forget either that children are also dependants and in many cases cost the state system rather more.

HIGH SUMMER TEMPERATURES LEAD TO HEAVY RAIN WARNING Meteorologists from the national weather centre are warning that as the effects of global warming are reaching the shores of Spain, resulting in an unusually dry spring, this autumn may be one of the worst on record. Although many coming to the Costa Blanca may well appreciate the increase in sea temperatures, set to reach 25 degrees Celsius in the next few weeks, the increase in sea temperature could have devastating effects once the air temperature starts to drop after August, prompting warnings of heavy rains and even the dreaded “Gota Fría”.

Crops across the Valencia region have been devastated by the spring drought, with many growers simply abandoning their harvest. Now, it looks like the autumn will also prove devastating for the opposite reason, far too much rain. Whilst infrastructure work is being carried out in places like the Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja, all that can be hoped for is that it is enough to carry those impending rain falls away from the properties, and the reality of how climate change is affecting us all may go some way to encourage us to try to change our own habits before it becomes too late.

CHEAPER MOBILE ROAMING CHARGES FROM JULY A holiday abroad this summer can now mean savings can be made when phoning home, as the European Commission has announced that mobile phone roaming charges will be further capped from the 1st of July. Even better, the legislation paves the way for the intended abolition of roaming charges in the future, as soon as 2016. The standard rate for making a call will now be 19 cents per minute, a reduction of 21% of the 2013 rate of 24 cents. Receiving a call will cost 5 cents per minute, as opposed to 7 cents, and even the costs of texting and data services will be cut by 25% and 55% respectively. To browse the internet whilst abroad, the new capped rate will be 20 cents per MB, down from 45 cents in 2013. The rules also allow for a “decoupled” service, which means that a user is no longer tied to a single operator for voice, text and data, and may choose other local networks. The agreement to reduce, cap and eventually eliminate roaming charges was first approved in 2012 and is on target for the total elimination of roaming

charges in 2016, as per the plans presented. Roaming charges were at their peak years ago when EU started to take action in 2007. The results are a 80-90% drop across roaming services in 2014 compared to 2007.

BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT King Felipe VI of Spain makes his first official state visit on Monday, when he travels to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis, along with Queen Letizia. Former King, Juan Carlos, met with Pope Francis only a short time ago during the canonization of popes John Paul II and John XXIII. This visit is expected to show a continual bond between the Spanish royal family and the church. Next week, the Royal couple will visit Portugal, following an invitation by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva, and the following week, the pair will visit Morocco for the first time as Monarchs.

CLR CALLS FOR STREET TO BE NAMED AFTER NEW KING The CLR have called for the Orihuela Council both to recognize the good work carried out by former King Juan Carlos I during his time in office and to congratulate his successor, Felipe VI, on his acquisition to the crown. Furthermore, party spokesman Juan Ignacio López-Bas, has asked that the city also consider a motion to name a suitable public building or street after the new king. The Spanish Royal family are no strangers to Orihuela as López-Bas recalled the Queen's visit in 1995 to reopen the Teatro Circo, the king’s grandfather, Juan de Bourbon, opening the Real Club de Golf Campoamor in 1988 and the many recent visits of the, then, Prince Felipe to the coast.

LEADER GOSSIP MAG FACES ROYAL SANCTIONS Monday, 30th June, 2014

The Spanish gossip magazine Diez Minutos (or, Ten Minutes) has had its knuckles rapped following the publication of an “imaginary interview” with the country’s new queen, Letizia and has now been told that it could face further disciplinary action. The interview was published in the May 28 edition of the magazine when Letizia was still Princess of Asturias. A complaint from the Murcia Association of Journalists, described the story, as a “discredit” to journalism that breached “the general principles of professional ethics.” In its response, however, Diez Minutos said that its interview was simply what the writer considered an imagined chat would be like with her, and interview with the replies that she might be expected to give. The magazine say that they used reliable sources and checked information, from which they recreated the conversation that could have taken place in the interview. It is understood that no complaint has been received by The Commission for Ethics in Journalism, from The Royal Household but they would nevertheless consider whether her privacy had been breached by the story. “Freedom of information must be compatible with truthfulness,” said the President of the Spanish Federation of Journalists’ Associations, Manuel Núñez Encabo.

TENDER REOPENS FOR 150 MILLION EURO MILITARY TRUCK CONTRACT After its suspension in April, the Ministry of Defence has reopened the tender for the acquisition of 734 new medium and heavy road trucks, in a contract valued at more than 150 million euro. With several companies already expressing an interest in bidding, this is thought to be one of the most eagerly anticipated contracts for the defence industry suppliers. Many believe that the current supplier Iveco, will be best placed to fulfil this contract. According to the technical specification of

the tender, the aim is to provide a range of vehicles between 2014 and 2019, able to carry a range of loads and weights. Within the framework of the contract, the Army will receive 523 trucks, the Air Force will gain 29, and there are 36 for the Navy, plus 146 for the UME military emergency support. According to the statement of requirements, the maximum price of the average truck is 172,720 euro overall, with the most expensive version, a crane-backed vehicle, valued at 333,160 euro.

The tender process will close on the 31st of July, with the 25th set aside as the final date for requesting information.

BRIGHTON TO JOIN PARTICK THISTLE AT PINATAR ARENA Brighton and Hove Albion have announced that they will be using Pinatar Arena for pre season training from 9 to 19 July. They will play a minimum of two matches under the guidance of their new manager, former Bayer Hyypia succeeds Oscar Garcia at the Championship club after the Spaniard quit following their play-off defeat to Derby in May.

Leverkusen coach and Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia. Brighton, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last month, will join Scottish Premier league outfit Partick Thistle who will be using the facility from 6 to 13 July. As the two British clubs depart, La Liga outfit Rayo Vallecano will then spend a week of their pre season in Pinatar, where manager Paco Jemez says his side will focus on fitness. During the period 21 to July 28 Rayo will also play a minimum of three friendly matches in the stadium. Rayo finished mid table in the season just ended but with the addition of at least 3 new players to their current squad, including the double signing of Morzillo and Jozabed from Valencia, Paco Jemez says that he feels the club is now strong enough to challenge for a European place.

DALGLISH EARNS HAT-TRICK OF WINS AT LA MANGA Kenny Dalglish’s hopes of completing a hat-trick of wins in the prestigious Footballers’ Golf Classic hung in the balance with just one round remaining as he lay in joint-third place with Derek Mountfield on 68 Stableford points, two behind leader Luther Blissett and one adrift of defending champion Steve Lovell. But the 63-year-old, who plays off a handicap of seven, was in no mood to miss out on victory and returned a score of 37 points in his final round – the joint-best of the day – on La Manga Club’s renowned South Course to move ahead of Blissett and Lovell and claim the coveted title with 105 points. Overall team victory went to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, with Jon Lennox, Laurence Donnelly

and David Rookley teaming up to take top prize with 250 points, three points clear of their closest rivals. The Footballers’ Golf Classic is organised by Mancini Events and the event will head back to the award-winning venue again next year when it will take place from June 6-11, 2015.

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties This week has not been the best for in terms of match results, however, it was good to see that the Blenheims were able to maintain their lead at the top of the Spitfire Division. Our VCL Lion team lost their way this week, losing heavily to Greenlands Jasmines, and dropping to second positiion by only 1 point. With two matches to go, all is to play for. By StJohn Broadhurst There were no games in the SABA pairs league last week due to the SABA summer trips competition which took place at La Marina on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Country Bowls had three teams entered and all three gave a good account of themselves, with the team of Carole Donnellan, Sandra McIlroy and Dennis Birkett just missing out on a place in the semi-finals. They were joint leaders of their group with a team from Quesada after four games, who beat them on the last end of game five to go through to the semis. Wednesday, 25 June saw the Clarets travel to San Luis to take on the Whites in the VCL. It was a good day for the Clarets, winning four of the five disciplines as well as the long game. Winning their games were: Men’s singles: StJohn Broadhurst 21-20. Pairs: Del Gunning, John Palmer 23-17.Rinks: Alan Roscoe, Joel Fernandez, Ben Noke, Dot Davies 17-11. Karen Kirk also picked up two points for the ladies singles, as her opponent (Margaret Rogers) had to concede after seventeen ends after suffering an injury. We wish Margaret a speedy recovery. Overall shots Clarets 86 (10 pts) Whites 65 (2 pts). The Badgers had a bye on Friday in the SABA Harrier league, a welcome rest with the weather heating up. www.countrybowlsclub.com

HORADADA BOWLS CLUB By Barry Evans We had mixed fortunes this week. In the VCL league we played at home against Monte-Mar Gents and came away with 8 points in a 89 to 80 shot win. Our two singles players both won, Carol Linehan by 21 - 14 and Terry Hucknall by 2113.Our rink of Fred Semper, Roy Thompson, Alan Pugh and Barry Evans also won by 19 - 14.Our points tally could have been even better had our Trips team of Yvonne and John Hurlock and Jeff Hier not dropped a 4 on the last end to lose by 1 shot. Our SABA team did not fare so well in a trip to Quesada. We only picked up 4 points in a heavy defeat. Well done to our two winning rinks of Yvonne Hurlock, Bryan Eatough and John Hurlock 19 - 14 and Fred Semper, Roy Collins and Alan Pugh 15 - 12. Our two games next week are Wed - Away at San Miguel. Note time - 4.30 for 5.00 Fri - home to Vistabella Normal time

LA SIESTA BOWLS REPORT By Norman Adcroft CBBA Summer Premier 20 League 24th June. Not too good a good result for us this week going down 14-4 to a strong Quesada side by only managing to take the Singles at home and the Fours away and not surprisingly losing the shots 164-110. Our Winners were Dave Livesey Singles home 21-20, and our fours winners away, Irene Laverick, Pat Moore, Dave Laverick Skipped by Vic Moore 18-12. VCL Green Division 25th June. Our opponents today were San Miguel and we managed to do enough to keep us firmly at the top of the League by winning the Ladies singles, the Pairs and the Fours convincingly. Well done to our winners Pat Harman, Singles 21-12, Joy Gardiner, Sue Jordan, 23-9 and our Fours, Bill Jordan, Doug Smith, Brian Gardiner Skipped by Brian Harman 19-13. Joy Gardiner, Yours Truly with John Ball 23-7, (super score) Jeannie Clements, Doug Smith with George Richardson, 17-11, and our drawn rink, Jean & Norman Murphy with Pat Harman 15-15. Overall shots 86-100 against. 5 points La Siesta 9 points San Luis. The Hornets. What a perverse game bowls can be. Two weeks ago the Hornets got well and truly thrashed by bottom of the league the Vulcan’s and today they meted out the same treatment to top of the league Vistabella Greeners, Points to the Hornets 10-4 and shots 12299. We took four rinks thanks to Hilary and John Clarke with Roy Millward 27-10, Pat Baylis, Sheila Millward and John Taylor 18-14, Izzie and Bert Bell with John Lincoln, an impressive 38-9, and Gill Sheldon, Rod Edgerton and Ron Sheldon, who sneaked in the second wood to provide a 13-12 win. Greenlands won 4 disciplines and scored 91 shots; Quesada Lions won 1 discipline and scored 69 shots therefore:- Team Jasmine 10 points and Quesada Lions 2 points. Saturday Roll-up. Due to various other bowler commitments the turnout was only eight. Therefore, with the diminished numbers, the prize allocation was cut in half, The winnner of the beer was Terry Lawton and the the bottle of wine, as runner up, went to Ronnie Stansfield, The Wonderful Wooden Spoon was won, again, by Helen Langlois. Looking forward to an improved attendance in the coming weeks even if it is getting hotter by the day. The Saturday Roll-up is Sponsored by TOTUS and DRAGON Ins. CBBA Premier 20 League - Greenlands played San Miguel and won 5 disciplines with SM taking the remaining 3. The final scores were Greenlands 10 pts from 5 wins and 6 to SM. Hurricane League - Gladiators. Today's match between Greenlands Gladiators and El Rancho was a repeat of the VCL result earlier in the week with the Gladiators really living up to their name. The numbers speak for themselves . What a cracking team! Gladiators 6 rinks and 142 shots. El Rancho 0 rinks and 71 shots Therefore; Gladiators 14 points El Rancho 0 points Glosters. A very close game played in great spirit by all. The result was decided when Terry Lemons rink unfortunately dropped a five on the last end to finish with a draw, thus changing what would have been an 8 points to 4 victory into a 9 points to 5 loss. Bowls can be a very cruel sport at times but that's why we like it. Terry and the rest of the Team will be back fighting fit next week. Space prevents me from naming all of our Aces this week. It can be said, however, that Greenlands has had another outstanding week at the office!! Wednesday found our VCL team away at Greenlands against the Mimosas and although playing some good bowls, The Mimosas proved to be too strong for us on the day, taking all the available points. Ladies singles: Marianne Holtham 7-21. Mens Singles: Ron Odell 9-21. Pairs: Jim Gracie and Stew Hamill 10-26. Trips: Carol Smith, Margaret Odell and David Whitworth 15-28. Rinks: June Whitworth, John Newell, Jane Hamill and Mick Smith 9-18. The 2014 SABA 3 day trips competition was held at La Marina from Saturday 21st June to Monday 23rd June With 24 teams taking part we saw some really competitive bowling Group A was won by Mel Highland, David Johnson and Nigel Baigent while group B was won by the home team of Jan And Peter Parsons and Alan Castle. Group C saw an undefeated Keith Jones trip which included June Jones and Colin Lindgren going through while Group D was won by Peta Rhodes.Derek Sale and Bill Pain. The Semis pitted Nigel Baigent’s team against Alan Castle and Bill Pain’s outlet against Keith Jones. The Allan Castle v Nigel Baigent game could have gone either way but Nigel was unlucky and Alan Castle went through to the Final. In a similar vein Keith Jones Trip lost Out to Bill Pain although this was a little more one sided. The Final looked as if Alan Castle and co might do the trick in the first three rounds but Bill Pain and co took control and ran out as eventual winners. Thanks go to La Marina Bowls Club for their excellent organisation and to our three umpires, Arthur Brown, Barry Norris and Bob Donnelly.

VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice In general a good week for Vistabella with only the Greeners result on Friday as a real disappointment. Nothing to report on Monday as the 4 Wood pairs Leagues took second place to the SABA 3 Day trips competition but normal service was resumed on Tuesday when we won 14 -4 against Monte Mar in the Premier 20 League This puts us into 3rd place but only 2 points behind 1st and 2nd and we have a game in hand. On Wednesday we took on San Luis in the VCL Leagues and won by 8-4 thanks to wins in the Ladies Sgls. Trips and Rinks. On Friday the Fairways finally hauled themselves out of the bottom 2, with a 9 points to 5 win over San Miguel Christians. The Fairways

won on 3 rinks and drew on 1 our winners were Andy Leggatt, Les Barber and Ian Kenyon (Les and Ian came in at the last minute, Good decision) Tony French. Anne Marie Stevenson. And Mike Regan and Lin and Charlie Watkins and Jenny Bowman, Martin Foulcer, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee snatched a draw on the last end to seal the result. The Greeners travelled to La Siesta and were a little disappointed with their result but despite a 10 points to 4 loss they are still top of the Harrier Division, our two wins came from Sheila and Mike Cox and Sue Mynott and Jenny Chaplin, Brian Pointon and Dave Chaplin. Let’s hope the good results continue into next week but in particular we look forward to a more encouraging result from the Greeners, come on you Guys you can do it.

‘Mike Probert talks Golf (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Hacienda Riquelme – an Update’ The región of Murcia is one of the most dry and arrid areas in Spain the months without rain have been very difficult for a number of their courses including Corvera,La Peraleja and Hacienda Riquelme. A few months ago the management team of Nike-IRM who operate the 6 x former Polarisworld courses informed all the booking agents that Hacienda Riquelme was in poor condition and that extensive work was needed on the greens to remidy the situation. I have been in further communication with the NIKE-IRM team who inform me that (quote): “At the moment there are still three greens that still have some patchy areas but otherwise the golf course is in really good shape. The greens crew are working very hard and are gradually lowering the height of the mowers so the greens will soon be perfect. The lakes are full of water, the tee boxes are perfect and overall the golf course is very tidy”. The management team have extended their summer deals up to the end of July 2014 and so if you had temporarily taken Hacienda Riquelme off your ‘play’ list then now is the time to consider playing it again while the prices are at their lowest. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. CLARKES BAR GS The venue for this weeks stableford competition was the beautiful course at Alenda. We arrived to find the course in wonderful condition with excellent greens which, unfortunately, had been neglected by other players failing to repair their pitch marks not an uncommon problem we all know. The weather was very warm with a fresh breeze either helping or hindering depending on the direction of play. The standard of play was quite good and congratulations to John Winkley for finally making the top step on the podium for the first time this year. Despite this no-one managed to find the par 4 10th green in 2 shots although there were a few very close calls. The results on the day were: Nearest the pin on hole 5 and longest drive on hole 17 was Alan Pickett. Nearest the pin on hole 16 was Steve Dunleavey. Winner with 34 points was John Winkley. Rup with 33 points on count back better back 6 was Chris Flint just beating Charlie Rodgers and Roy Welburn. Next week we return to Peraleja for the second round of this years eclectic competition. Please note we are having a Captains Charity Day on 17th July at La Serena in aid of Help for Heroes everyone is welcome please make every effort to attend. Call Charlie on 618181703.

SMGS VISIT LA FINCA GOLF COURSE The society's monthly game at La Finca is always a well attended affair at this most popular of venues. The open & often wind-swept undulating terrain with water hazards on most of the holes make this course quite a challenge for players of all standards. The greens have nearly returned to their usual high standard after recent treatment, they just need to regain a touch more speed & they'll be back to their best. However, judging by the day's scores most players seemed to quickly master the lack of green speed - we really do have some tasty players in our midst ....... but please don't tell Luis Suarez !! Talking about the cream of our golfers, that's exactly what we're getting down to in the singles KO tournament as we approach the semi finals stage. This week saw 2 of our consistent prize winners in the gold category go head to head with everybody expecting a tight tussle. Tony Smale versus Brian Staines had fireworks written all over it! A heated tussle down the 18th or even extra holes were the popular predictions. However, on the day there wasn't a banger in sight, not even a Roman Candle - it was as if Tony was there in body but little else as he went down 9 & 8 to a very much on-form Brian who notched up an amazing 23 points on the front which wiped out any opposition. NTP's went to Alan Macdonald (3), Noel Bannon (6), John Aitchinson (13), & Laurence Cullen(16). The winners of the 3 "special" NTP prizes were Norman Padmore (Bronze, hole15) Steve Davis (Silver, hole11) & Shay Cunningham (Gold, hole7). Congratulations to Robin Eastman for scoring 40 points which secured the visitor's prize. Bronze division's top 4 were Norman Padmore (35), Keith Stevenson

(36), Neil Sheldon (38) & Norman McBride (40). Silver's were Alan Macdonald (36c/b), Noel Bannon (36c/b), Steve Davis (38) & John Aitchinson (40). Top 4 in the Gold were Tony Smale (30), Brian Staines (37c/b), Barry Roehrig (c/b) & Theo Boelhouwer (38). Keep tuned in to www.smgs.org to keep abreast of all society matters or give Baz a buzz on 966 731 033 to learn any info on forthcoming Wednesday meetings. Well done to all those in the prizes.

CLAPTON’S GOLF SOCIETY - LO ROMERO

This month’s competition saw the Society make a welcome return to Lo Romero which was long overdue. The course looked to be in superb condition and with the sun shining we looked to be in for an excellent days golf. Paul and Chris were playing their singles match so we sent them off first. In the end it was congratulations to Paul having managed to get to the final by only playing one match, but this was his good fortune. The Captain tee’ed off looking to cement his final

score to win player of the year. He was six points ahead, all he needed to do was to win which means he couldn’t be caught by Bob. As it was the greens tended to be slow or indifferent which meant putting was something of a lottery, nevertheless we managed to produce some good scores on an exacting course. Everybody having finished we made our way back to our new Clubhouse at Mono’s, Chris’s new bar. May he have every success in the future and the Society will keep going in our new surroundings. We had our usual excellent meal and the prize giving and results followed as below. Our thanks to Chris and his staff for their hospitality once again. Results as follows. Overall Winner: Terry Smith 37 pts, Gold Winner: Andy Trefry 36 pts Gold Runner Up: Bob Eaton 35 pts, Silver Winner: Mike Bates 32 pts Silver Runner Up: Rick Drake 27 pts, Best Front Nine: Tony Stead 18 pts, Best Back Nine: Debbie Weedon 17 pts Nearest the Pin:5th Bob Marchant, 7th Dave Pretty, 15th Andy Trefry: Best Guest: Micky Hildebrand 35 pts, ost Potential: Chris Gridley Singles Matches: Paul Burletson bt Chris Gridley 1 up Next match Captain’s Day at Bonalba 18th July.

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN Font Del Lop played host to the Hubbers last week, for their seventh event of the season. The tricky undulating 7,000 yd course offers rare opportunities for a comfortable flat lie approach shot. A low handicapper will take these shots in his stride, leaving the rest of us rueing our lack of practice on this type of shot, which could be above or below the player´s feet combined with downward or upward lies. This was perfectly illustrated by the Hubbers Grand Prix podium placing where all three winners had a handicap of 10 or under. Roger Duncan came out tops with a creditable 34 pts and will enjoy playing with his new handicap of 4.4 next outing. His 10 pars and a birdie on the Par 4 420 yd 4th, just got him the winners prizes over Dave Lethaby by one point who had a more modest 7 pars. Further birdies were recorded by Cam McHardy on the Par 3 3rd, Simon Lee on the Par 5 18th and Peter Borg repeating Lee´s effort. The hour long return journey to the Hub (Villamartin) was rewarded by some tasty Quesada fish and chips and one or two glasses of Alhambra´s amber nectar, in preparation for an England win. Unfortunately any victory wasn’t forthcoming and supporters may well wish to switch their allegiance to the UK´s nearest neighbours of France or Holland. The Hubbers next outing is at Las Colinas this coming Sunday (6th). Guests and visitors alike are welcome to join this Society at this excellent course, but should register their interest

early at the Hub Sports Bar as allocated tee times are expected to be taken very quickly. Results: N.T.P´s: Hole 8 Andy Shaw, Hole 12 Richard Palmer PJ Rentacars Best Guests: 1st Ronnie Lindblom 33 pts, 2nd Nick Danjanovic 30 pts Grand Prix: 1st Roger Duncan 34 pts, 2nd Dave Lethaby 33 pts 3rd Simon Lee 29 pts Picture shows L/R Ronnie Lindblom, Roger Duncan, Dave Lethaby, Nick Danjanovic, Simon Lee

IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP. THE ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB (Hoylake) was laid out in 1869 on the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club; it was both horse racing venue and golf course for the first few years. Close to the town of Hoylake, hence the name, the links course sits on a peninsula separated from Liverpool by the Mersey Estuary and from N. Wales by the river Dee. In 1885 the first Amateur Championship was held at Hoylake, and the Walker Cup began life there in 1921 as an amateur contest between Gt. Britain and Ireland and the USA. In 1930 the then amateur Bobby Jones won his third Open at Hoylake, the second leg of his grand slam, and returned to New York for a ticker tape parade. In the 2006 Open the notorious Hoylake winds were conspicuously absent. In a week of heatwave weather on a terrifyingly fast course Tiger Woods kept his driver in his bag and navigated his way to a two shot victory with supreme skill. Will he be back in July? MATTHEW FITZPATRICK (19) has decided to turn professional. The first amateur golfer since Bobby Jones in 1930 to simultaneously hold the low amateur honours at both the U.S. Open and Open Championship, and the only amateur to make the cut at Pinehurst, Fitzpatrick finished a one under 69 that left him 11 over for the tournament. Not a bad start to his career. TO GO ROUND PINEHURST on the final day of the U.S. Open never less than four strokes ahead was a great achievement for Martin Kaymer. To tie for second place, playing on level terms with the best golfers in the world, was an even greater achievement for Eric Compton. After two heart transplants most of us would be happy to stagger to the sofa

to watch the tournament on the box, let alone play in it. Eric visits hospitals and encourages the disabled in his spare time, “Never write yourself off,” he advises. As an example of practising what you preach, it could hardly be bettered. THE WEEKEND OF 4th JULY sees the return of The Celebrity Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort, South Wales. Teams of six from England Scotland Ireland and Wales will once again compete for the coveted trophy. Bradley Walsh is the latest member of the England team, and Brendan O’Carroll of Mrs Brown’s Boys joins The Irish team, who apparently played hard and partied hard last year. Comedian Rob Brydon returns to captain Wales, and Gavin Hastings the reigning champions, Scotland. In 2013 thousands of fans enjoyed a weekend of golf themed entertainment, watched the celebrities in action, and visited the “Interactive Retail Village.” (Shops.) THE ROYAL AND ANCIENT golf club of St. Andrews, founded 1754, has been a men only club since before Napoleon was born. That could all change in September when the members are asked to vote on whether to accept the ladies. R & A chief Peter Dawson is urging them to vote in favour, saying society is changing and golf must keep up. The indications are that the vote will be carried. Open Venues Troon and Royal St. Georges still bar women members, will they be the next bastions to fall? WE’VE HAD SOME pretty windy conditions this year; on the course we’re tempted to hit the ball harder into and across the wind. The pros always say it’s better to hit it a touch easier, like a second serve, to keep an element of control and not too much spin on the ball. So don’t forget the old adage: “Swing with ease into the breeze!”

GOGARTY'S V PADDY'S POINT - CHARITY GOLF MATCH The annual charity challenge match is played every summer over two competitions with each pub hosting one of the matches. This event was hosted by Gogarty's. Money raised goes to a local charity. This match was played at Las Saurines and was played as a pairs better ball stableford competition. The immaculate course and excellent conditions on the day resulted in high scoring by both teams. At the start of the day Gogarty's held the trophy and both they and Paddy's Point fielded strong teams keen to pick up the cup. There were 11 pairs a side and Paddy's came home

victorious with 474 against 463. A Paddy's Point pair came in with the best score, 48 points with many others in the 40s. We returned to Gogarty's for the presentation and celebrations. Many thanks to Maurice and Mick for organising the day which resulted in an impressive €1500 being raised. The return match will be hosted by Paddy's Point. Finally a very big thank you to James and all of his staff for the excellent buffet and hospitality after the game. The photo shows a victorious Paddy's Point with the trophy.

The Royal Liverpool GC links course sits on a peninsula separated from the city by the Mersey Estuary and from N. Wales by the river Dee.

Having tried out several new drivers in and out of the wind I’m convinced the only way to increase my distance is to hit the ball and run backwards. Until next time, happy golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repairs.TEL: 638 859 475.

SAN JAVIER GOLF SOCIETY INDIVIDUAL STABLEFORD We travelled to Villamartin to play our monthly Individual Stableford and what a a great day we had. This was the first time for a couple of years that we have played there and the course was in fantastic shape. It was a day for the Ladies in Division 2 with them taking first and second places. Joyce Armstrong winning on 37pts and Jo Murphy just behind in second on 34pts so well done to you both. In the top Division it was our Captain coming out on top with 37pts with Ken Murphy taking second on 34pts so a good day for the Murphy family with Frank also taking a nearest the pin. The next Society's game is on Monday, 7th July 2014 at La SERENA. The format will be Individual Stableford. Handicap & P.o t Year Qualifier. Payday is on Saturday, 5th July 2014 at La Serena, in the bar area, between 11.00 and 12.00 hours.

LO MARABU GOLF SOCIETY

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY

At Lo Romero on 26th June 2014. In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services This month’s event was the annual Captain versus Vice-Captain Challenge which is held every year in June at the superb Lo Romero course. The course was in good condition despite the low water levels on some of the water hazards This year 24 players took part on the 12 man a side challenge with the best 10 scores for each team to count. This event is usually extremely tight but not this year as the Captains team took the honours by 298 points to 258 points. There were a few individual prizes which were as follows: Best Individual score – Terry Drayton – 35 points, Dog of a Day – Dave Bensley (Defeated Captain) Nearest the pins – Drayton, Farnell, Robinson and Fantom. We returned to the newly opened Marabu Lounge for a welcoming meal provided by Dave, Julie and the team and our thanks go to them for the continued support. Huge amounts of humble pie were swallowed as the defeated ViceCaptain presented the winning Captain and his victorious team with a memento of the day. Our next fixture is the social day on Monday 14th July 2014 at La Finca followed by the monthly society event at Roda on Thursday 31st July 2014. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at: www.costa-blanca-greenfees.com.

Most people know their way to Alicante now, as this was our second visit this year, but even so negotiating the streets of Alicante Norte in the ‘rush hour’ is always fraught, but a café con leche and tostada is always calming and welcoming especially as it is gratis. There was a full complement of 40 members and guest eager to get going for the stableford competition and also try to improve their eclectic score. This is the second try for the eclectic improvement and there are another two to go, so we should know Alicante quite well by the end of the year. All agreed that the course looked well and the greens were very good but on the slow side, there were, however, some water pools in unexpected places from the rains of the day before. Those in form were: Gold Division: 1st Brian Leys 34pts, 2nd Harry Wilcock 32pts (c/b) and 3rd George Stuart 32pts Silver Division: 1st Gordon Cobb 33pts (c/b), 2nd Susan Smith 33pts (c/b) and Steve Cosgrove 33pts. Bronze Division: Margaret O’Brien 32pts, 2nd Scott Blair 31pts and 3rd Geoff Dowsett 27pts. NTPs: Barny Barningham hole 3, Brian Coultate holes 6 and 15 and John Dunnion hole 12. John Henderson, Brian Leys, Brian Coultate and Barny Barningham shared the 2s pot. The free game draw was claimed by John Henderson. There is still time to sign up for Chicken and Chips at the Tavern straight after the Villamartin game on the 9th July, this to include partners as well. All details are on the website.

Please let me know by email including a buggy if you want one, this will help to ensure you have booked a place and in the booking of the Tee times & buggies with the course.
