BATTLE CONTINUES TO SAVE ORIHUELA COSTA POSTAL SERVICE

The battle to save the home delivery postal service in five areas of Orihuela Costa threatened by decisions of the postal authorities in Madrid continues. Since C.L.A.R.O. alerted the public and the local government to the serious consequences of the decision to suspend home deliveries of post in Cabo Roig, Campoamor, La Regia and La Zenia I and II as of 1 September, unless multi-mail boxes are installed, various steps have been taken to reverse this decision. Orihuela Town Hall has not

succeeded in persuading the postal authorities to change the decision. C.L.A.R.O. therefore took the lead in coordinating a formal protest against the decision by representatives of neighbourhood and commercial associations of the five areas concerned to the Spanish Defensor del Pueblo or Ombudsman, whose role it is to protect citizens from arbitrary administrative action. This formal protest objects not only to the arbitrariness and discriminatory nature of the measure but it also underlines the failure, due to an error by Orihuela Town Hall officials, to respect the procedure whereby representative of affected populations should have been consulted. AMBASSADOR HIGHLIGHTS BRITISH CONTRIBUTION TO VALENCIA After years of austerity, the financial situation in Spain and across Europe seems to be easing, with the job situation improving, more families seeing the light at the end of a very long and bleak tunnel, and the welcome mat brushed clean as investors, buyers and tourists start to return. The contribution that the population of Britain has made in the past was clear in the boom years, creating unique holiday hotspots and thriving communities, which, although a large number of those people may well have returned, is now being boosted by a second wave of buyers eager to benefit from some of the lowest prices in property ever. Not only that, after a period of stay-at-home holidays, tourists are once again coming to Spain in their droves, breaking records in both hotel occupancy and spending, which collectively adds to the income and revenue streams of the entire country. This week, the British Ambassador, Simon Manley, reinforced the commercial ties between the UK and Spain, as he visited Valencia to underline the major economic contribution that British nationals make to the area. An estimated 1.6 billion euro was spent in Valencia last year by the 2.2 million British tourists who visited the region. In addition, more than 100,000 British nationals are registered as residents on the padrón in the Valencia autonomous community, making further valuable contributions to the regional economy. In meetings with leaders of the Valencian government, including President Alberto Fabra, the Ambassador raised the provision of healthcare for tourists and the importance of all public hospitals accepting the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) including public hospitals that are privately managed, rather than trying to bill visitors’ travel insurance. He highlighted the plight of those who continued to be FROM PAGE ONE The views of the representatives of the five areas are now clear – they are unanimously opposed to the measure. In addition, C.L.A.R.O. Councillor Bob Houliston, formally requested the Mayor in the Plenary meeting of the Council on 25 June to take all necessary measures to change the decision, including, if necessary, legal action and a formal declaration of the Council Plenary to the effect that Orihuela Costa should be considered a continuous urban entity and not a collection of separate, individual urbanizations. The importance of such a declaration is that in the Orihuela Master Plan of 1990, when Orihuela Costa barely existed, it was not defined as a single integrated entity. The postal authorities have used this out of date administrative definition to allege that the density of the population and frequency of postal deliveries to households in each of the five, according to them, unrelated areas do not meet the levels required to maintain home deliveries. However, taking Orihuela Costa as a continuous, integrated urban entity with over 30,000 residents, its own Town Hall office, schools, public transport and other services, its own postal code (03189) and a single

British Ambassador, Simon Manley, right, with the Valencian government, President Alberto Fabra affected by property problems in areas such as Lliber and Catral, and urged the Valencia President and regional councillor for property and environmental issues, Isabel Bonig, to work towards solutions as soon as possible. Mr Manley said “As this was my first visit to Valencia, I was keen to emphasise the huge value that the British tourist and resident population has for this area. The fact that British tourists contributed 1.6 billion Euros to the Valencia economy in 2013 alone illustrates this. I am also committed to working with the Valencian government on the issues that affect British nationals the most and to ensure that help is provided when they need it.” The Ambassador urged that ties be strengthened with the

post office for the whole area, the population density and delivery frequency requirements would be more than satisfied. In a press conference in Orihuela Costa on Friday, 4 July, in which both Martina Scheurer and Bob Houliston participated, the Mayor of Orihuela stated categorically that the Town Hall of Orihuela would appeal in the Administrative Court against the decision of the postal authorities and in the plenary meeting of the Council in July the government would present a motion, which they hope will be approved by all parties and councillors, stating that Orihuela Costa and its constituent urbanisations, form part of a single continuous urban entity. He said that this revised definition of Orihuela Costa is already included in the new draft Master Plan for Orihuela which is in the process of final

approval. C.L.A.R.O. is satisfied with these commitments and will follow with attention their implementation. We will urge the government, in its appeal to the administrative court, to request the immediate, temporary suspension of the measure, (medidas cautelares) before it comes into force on 1 September. With the steps taken or to be taken, however, there is no guarantee at all that they will lead to a reversal of the decision before 1 September. We will therefore urge the government to appeal to the postal authorities not to introduce the intended measure until the legal actions have been concluded. The consequences of the entry into force of the measure would be extremely serious not only for those concerned who, if they are not able to install multi-mail boxes which is probably, practi-

British population to encourage integration. Given the language barrier faced by some in the British community, the Ambassador encouraged the Valencia president to include as much information as possible on official websites in English. Mr Manley also met police chiefs and visited the 112 emergency coordination centre, which last year received 150,000 emergency calls in English, the majority of which were from the Alicante province. Residents facing an emergency should call 112. They can also get updates on risks such as forest fires by following the Twitter account @gva_112cv.

cally impossible in most cases, would have to collect mail directly from the Playa Flamenca post office where it would only be kept for two weeks before effectively disappearing. All other users of the Post Office would be affected by the longer queues and longer waiting times inevitably caused by the perhaps

hundreds of people who would be obliged to go to the post office daily to collect their mail. In other words, the postal service for all residents and businesses in Orihuela Costa would deteriorate to the point that the right to this basic service, recognised in Spanish and European law, would be compromised.

EUROPEAN COURTS RULE ALICANTE FILM STUDIOS ILLEGAL

The initial investigation came about after Pinewood Studios in London complained that the Alicante based studio infringed competition criteria. The General Court of the European Union has stated 265 million euro in funding provided by the Generalitat Valenciana towards the construction of Alicante´s film studios, the Ciudad de la Luz, was granted illegally and therefore must now be recovered. The ruling confirmed the previous decision of the European Commission, which ordered the repayment of subsidies in May 2012, also dismissing any claims made by the Valencia government. The initial investigation came about after Pinewood Studios in London complained that the Alicante based studio infringed competition criteria. That investigation concluded that “no private investor would have agreed to invest” in the Ciudad de la Luz under the same terms as those set about by the Valencian Government and funded by public money, which therefore “greatly distorts competition between the major European film studios”. In its application, the Commission alleged that Spain had misapplied the private investor criterion and exceeded the margin of appreciation. In addition, it was wrong in assessing the funding through state aid because they took into account performances in a tertiary resort area. The appeal denounced the lack of motivation of the decision, ordering the recovery of aid to film producers and lack of reason to hold that investment was not of a cultural purpose.

However, the Generalitat Valenciana own the facility which it subsidized, and so the only real outcome will be to sell the studios, hopefully recovering the money, although opposition political figures claim that the market value of the facility is far lower than the amount required. Socialist deputy in the Valencia parliament, Eva Martínez, has subsequently asked the question, “Who is going to take political responsibility for this scandal? Who is going to resign?” Whilst other political oppositions echoed the sentiment, with the Deputy for Compromís, Mireia Mollà, commenting that the “Valencian PP has been the most disastrous manager known in the history of this country”, basing their comments on years of over investment and waste that almost crippled the region, led to huge debts, and a legacy of many lavish buildings, some of which stand dormant and empty to this day. For his part, spokesperson for the government, Alberto Fabra, gave a surprise statement that the ruling was “somewhat expected”, rather than defending the Partido Popular team he leads, whilst insisting that the market value of the facilities can cover the amount due. The studio facility where such hit films as Asterix, Prometheus, My Life in Ruins and The Impossible were shot, filed for bankruptcy in early 2012, with debts of hundreds of millions of euro.

SHOWING SIGNS OF TOURISM

The Regional Secretary for Infrastructure, Planning and Environment, Victoriano Sánchez-Barcáiztegui, presided over a press conference in Torrevieja this week, in which a new project was announced to provide new road signs across the Vega Baja which will lead drivers to touristic destinations, thus boosting tourism.

Already highlighted as key points of interest in Torrevieja, new signs will point towards such monuments as the Eras de la Sal, the largely redundant International Musical Auditorium, the Mirador de la Torre del Moro, the Plaza de la Estación where the local skate park is located, churches of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción, the Sociedad Cultural Casino de Torrevieja and the museums. In addition, the Green Route will also be highlighted, along with the sports city and tourist offices, the Paraje Natural Municipal del Molino del Agua, Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja,

Calas de Torrevieja, Parque Aromático de Torreblanca, Parque de Las Naciones, Salinas de Torrevieja and both the nautical and sports ports of Torrevieja. Finally, various commercial sites will also be included, at no cost to them, including a number of restaurants, tourist apartments, hotels and campsites. Other areas, such as Orihuela, will consider their options during the course of the summer, before submitting their final list for approval in September. Sánchez-Barcáiztegui also announced that the new signs will include the logo of the Tourist Board of the Costa Blanca, following the request made by the subsidiary of the Provincial Council, with the overall aim of “helping to promote the active presence of the Costa Blanca in the tourism market and promote domestic and foreign tourists to the province of Alicante”. The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment started this project by sending a letter to all municipalities that were invited to indicate which attractions they wanted to indicate as tourist attractions on the new signs. After the original proposals and consultation, the final draft plan will be completed, with around 200 signs being approved that will be installed across the region later this year and into the early part of 2015. Barcáiztegui Sanchez explained that the project, which has already been implemented in a number of areas across the region, is financed entirely by the regional government, and is part of a plan to provide “clear and compelling information” on the elements of each area of interest, thus strengthening domestic tourism. However, one of the most confusing parts of the campaign for many is that none of these signs will appear on the main road through the area, as the N-332 is operated by the national road authority, and, as such, the approval for signs lies with them, which they have already said would not be possible. These signs will be placed on the minor roads surrounding the attractions they point towards only. Meanwhile, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón thanked the secretary for choosing Torrevieja as the city from which to present the project, thanking all those who attended from the other areas for their presence in the meeting, and for their involvement “in this new tourism project that will be very positive for our region”.

TORREVIEJA LOSES SOCIAL AID MONEY The Unión Progreso y Democracia political group of Torrevieja, the UPyD, has criticised the Partido Popular councillor for social welfare, Tomás Ballester, after it was revealed that the city has lost half od the social welfare grant from the Valencia government on account of incompetent mismanagement. The UPyD claim that on account of the town hall not meeting certain requirements, the result is that 45,475 euro which should have come from the government to help those in need will no longer be provided. The group argue that they think that if those responsible for social welfare had done their job properly, they would have known how this would damage the direct subsidies to the numerous cases of social insecurity that are suffering in Torrevieja. In a statement, the local coordinator for the UPyD, Jose Serna, explained that “it is inconceivable that Torrevieja has had more than 45,000 euro and has not managed to transfer this amount to be distributed among the many neighbours who are having a really bad time”. Questioning how the councillor devotes his time if not dedicated to helping those in need. Serna added that “we do not want to think that these grants are targeted towards people related to municipal power, some who do not need, as has happened in the past to buy loyalty towards the PP in Torrevieja”.

THE STRIKING REALITY THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS A protest due to have been held on Friday in Torrevieja by waste disposal workers still in fear of their jobs, was cancelled in the week under the threat and fear of legal action and fines against those involved. The contract for waste collection and street cleaning in Torrevieja came to an end recently, after being in place for the last 10 years. Controversial from the offset, the contract has led to criminal proceedings against the previous mayor of the city, Pedro Hernandez Mateo, sentenced to prison as a result, although still walking free to this day, pending a clemency appeal on account for the fact that he is a politician. In addition, there has been an increase in the budget and expenditure, concerns from technicians and financial experts, the worry of dirty streets during the summer that the contract is not in place, and, for some time, the threat of job losses as the city´s mayor, Eduardo Dolón, wanted to split the contract and award it to two different companies, at the same time as the opposition Los Verdes wanted to municipalise the service, thus protecting the workforce. The local police in Torrevieja have also carried out numerous protects over their working conditions, and they too have been threatened with both disciplinary and legal action, which has possibly sent an additional wave of fear through those wanting to carry out a legitimate and peaceful protest in order to get answers as to their future employment. The CCOO union representing the cleaners issued a note saying that the protest should not go ahead, as the workers have been threatened that they would be in breach of the rules and their actions could lead to fines. Nationally, a similar situation has already occurred, with almost 300 workers already appearing in court for their participation in strike action, the UGT

union are calling for increased backing for a campaign against what they describe as the “criminalisation” of strikes and industrial action. With threats of fines and even prison, Cándido Méndez of the UGT says that at least 260 workers who have protested for their rights are now facing a cumulative 120 years in jail, all whilst those given criminal convictions, such as is the case in Torrevieja, remain free. With recent changes in labour laws making it easier for companies to get rid of staff, reduce wages or change their working conditions, some see Spain heading towards a time from which the country only recently became free, when the rights of the citizens were not a consideration. Ignacio Fernández Toxo, from the CCOO, said that the courts are “trying to make examples of a few, instil fear and discourage people from participating in mobilisations and strikes. We're talking about a fundamental right that's enshrined in the Spanish constitution”, concluding, “We thought we had clearly overcome this phase in Spain. But it seems like maybe not”. Prior to the changes being implemented, there had been a considerable increase in the number of strikes held in Spain. According to the Izquierda Plural, there were 994 strikes in Spain in 2013, 11.67% more than the 878 that took place in 2012. However, the days not worked decreased by 14.85%, from 1.29 million in 2012 to 1,090,000 days last year. These strikes involved 1.63 million workers, representing a 16.57% increase from the 1.36 million in 2012, with overall participation rising from 23.76% in 2012 to 27.42% in 2013. The Izquierda Plural also point out that the government are keen to hide this information, which was mandatory, as they also want to censor the reality of conditions for the workers involved.

CORRUPTION IN LOCAL POLITICS Early in the week we saw three of those members of the Partido Popular accused in the Torrevieja mobile phone scandal give their side of the story in court. The first was former councillor Daniel Plaza, who is accused of using his public funded telephone to call sex workers, allegedly making more than 200 calls to sexual service providers between 2007 and 2012. José Manuel Pizana was accused of having had his mobile phone bill paid until October 2011 despite leaving office in the May of that year. Former advisor Graham Knight is alleged to have clocked up a large, 1,140 euro bill in “roaming” fees when using his mobile phone whilst abroad. Later, two serving councillors and an advisor were in court. Javier Montoro is said to have accumulated a bill of 1,300 euro in calls to his girlfriend, but he almost instantly returned the money and apologised for his actions. Eduardo Gil Rebollo was said to have subscribed to a pay-per-view pornography channel. Advisor Juana López Carmona is said to have called at least 170 late night competition lines. If found guilty in the courts, those involved face a fine, as well as Alberto Fabra vowed to wipe out corruption but seems to have achieved little.

being banned from holding public office for between 6 months and 3 years, although it is believed that any refunds will be taken into consideration as mitigation when passing sentence. In Dolores, a similar situation has come to light this week, with the socialist mayor, Joaquín Hernández, accusing the PP councillors of the same thing, using their public funded mobile phones for private use. On the 10th of July, former Mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, will give her evidence in defence of accusations that she was involved in the infamous “Caso Brugal”, one of the most prominent corruption cases in the history of Spain. Lorente is charged with the alleged crimes of corruption, insider trading, disclosure of secrets, prohibited activities to authorities and fraud, to which she has maintained her innocence throughout. Despite hoping to “move on” once the evidence clears her, Lorente has said that she will not step in to take charge of the Orihuela PP, as this is the time for current head, Pepa Ferrando, to take the lead. On Thursday, Ferrando, who is also facing corruption charges, gave a press conference in which she stated that there are now a total of nine Partido Popular councillors from the previous PP administration of Orihuela facing corruption charges. This information was believed to have been released prior to the information becoming public from the courts. José Antonio Aniorte, a former councillor for Orihuela Costa is now added to that list of the six previously known officials facing charges, along with Antonio Rodríguez Barberá and José Manuel Cutillas, now joining Lorente and Ferrando, along with Manuel Abadía, Antonio Lidón, José Antonio Rodríguez and Ginés Sénchez. Alberto Fabra, the Partido Popular ruling President of the Valencia region, has come under fire again this week. When he took over office he vowed to wipe out corruption,, even stating that no member of his party facing charges could stand for election, yet the evidence suggests that he has not taken action against any senior member of his ranks, and has only taken action against those in junior roles. This came about after three more politicians in Mayoral roles were charged with different offences, but have not come under threat of Fabra´s so called “líneas rojas”. The deputy for Compromís, Mireia Mollà, issued a statement from the opposition, saying that “the list of defendants in the ranks of the Vega

Baja PP increases shamefully, while Alberto Fabra does not exert any pressure in this regard and protects them as they continue in public office”. Mollà continued, “Despite the seriousness of the matter and instead of condemning this, Alberto Fabra and his team are dedicated to presenting Ferrando for mayor, an attitude that shows how false the red line is”. As such, Mollà demands the res- The deputy for Compromís, Mireia Mollà, ignation of all says it is shameful how the PP list of Orihuela coun- defendants continues to increase. cillors accused of alleged corruption “to stop littering the name of the institutions they represent, rather than clinging to public office for personal gain”. With the Partido Popular losing countless votes in the European election, the call to clean up politics has never been louder, but quite what the outcome of these latest revelations will be remains to be seen, as everybody is considered innocent until proven guilty. However, in the case of former PP mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, even a guilty verdict has little consequence as he still remains free and seemingly above the law, a token for those who think they can “get away with it” being clear.

MERCADONA RESPONDS TO FOOD CHARITY

Following an on-line petition brought against supermarket chain Mercadona by a charity dedicated to helping deliver food to the needy, the supermarket has responded to the campaign, in a positive manner. The company firstly point out that they were not aware of the existence of the work carried out by the Asociación Menuda Vida de Perros, but went on to say that they consider the contribution of the group to be “excellent”, and have pointed out that the company has a team “dedicated to manage the many requests we receive”, and where the company does get involved, “our collaboration is always free”. The company then continued to clarify a few points, including the fact that “Mercadona has never charged for the delivery of donations. In fact, food is transported daily without cost to various soup kitchens in Spain”. In 2014, Mercadona donated 1,500 tons of food to food banks and other entities, and have increased collaboration partnerships with food banks and suppliers, and continue to donate to many of the worthy causes they collaborate in, including donating almost “3 million diapers to the Red Cross”, and are actively involved in volunteer programs with their staff. In May of this year, Mercadona delivered 7,000 litres of milk to the Food Bank of Alicante, along with

3,000 kilos of sugar, biscuits and cocoa powder, as part of the partnership that Mercadona has with the Food Bank of Alicante which will result in of 20,000 kilos of staple goods being handed over by the end of the year. In addition, the company uses its own “Mercadona Card” to provide direct assistance to that in need, and this year alone have handed out 38,000 precredited payment cards via 90 entities they work with. In 2013, the charity Cáritas alone assisted in the distribution of 22,000 kilos of food. The a card with a preloaded balance is given to the family in need, so they can make their own purchases at any Mercadona store, choosing the products they need with no cost to them. The company spoke to Inés García de Paco, president of the association, and in their statement they confirm that “As we discussed by telephone, Mercadona remain at your disposal for details on this or any similar initiative”. The petition now has 40,000 signatures, rocketing from around 10,000 in just a few days.

TAX CHANGE MAY LEAD TO MORE EXPENSIVE E-BOOKS As the Spanish government promise no more tax increases, apart from those they are obliged to apply, the tax office has said that the latest increase enforced by Brussels on medical equipment will not apply to certain products considered to be necessary by those with “physical disabilities”. Therefore, glasses, prosthetic limbs, crutches and wheelchairs will remain at the current taxable rate of 10%. The same will also apply to emergency items such a first aid kits, bandages and gauze. However, the increase to 21% will apply to equipment used in the manufacturing of medicine, equipment and medical instruments, which may well lead to an increase in their cost by means of indirect taxation. The increase on all medical products was set as mandatory from the 1st of January this year, as the European Union considered Spain´s stance to be “too lax”. Despite opposing the move, the increase was reinforced by the European Court. A second change to tax legislation announced on Monday refers to electronic communications and materials. Specifically, one of the fundamental

changes is that users in Spain who download items such as e-books will be taxed in Spain, and not where the headquarters of the company selling the product is located. This rule was announced in the UK in May, when consumer groups warned of higher prices for downloaded products as a result of the UK government also closing the loophole which allowed companies such as Apple and Amazon to charge a global, lower rate of VAT.

OVER 40 ARRESTED FOR POLICE ADVERTISING FRAUD

sponsor advertising space available in these publications on the pretence that their firm is officially raising money for the police, fire or ambulance service (depending on the chosen theme of their in-house publication). Examples of some publications that have been published include Ambulance wallplanners, Fire Service year calendars, crime prevention magazines and emergency services wallplanners. These publications and sites are usually fronted and riddled throughout with images of emergency services officers carrying out their duties. This could be an image of a police officer assisting a member of the public on the high street or a fire fighter in action distinguishing a building that is on fire. Sources close to the investigation have said that the arrests in Elche have been carried out by agents of the National Police who travelled down from Madrid. A number of other arrests have been made in cities throughout Spain. Anyone who might have already taken out advertising in such circumstances and might have concerns regarding the authenticity of the claims made, should contact their local Guardia Civil Station.

The National Police have arrested over forty people, the majority of them in Elche, for alleged fraud related to the sale of advertising in magazines and on websites linked to the Security Forces and the Emergency Services. The operation, directed from Madrid, is still ongoing and as such, few details have been released by the authorities so as not to compromise their current investigations. What is known is that individuals claiming to be selling advertising space in Police Journals or websites on behalf of the Policia National or the Guardia Civil have been targeting companies in the area, putting them under undue pressure to buy and charging exorbitant rates. They imply that a refusal to purchase may have implications with regard to the future treatment of companies by the security and emergency authorities. As such, many organizations have felt pressurized into purchasing the advertising, which is rarely, if ever, is actually placed in magazines or publications. This type of advertising scam can generate vast sums of revenue by deceptively approaching businesses through unsolicited sales calls to

POLICING THE SUMMER HOT SPOTS

As summer is now well and truly underway, this weekend saw 10,000 Guardia Civil officers on duty, supported by 600 based in traffic management centres and 13,000 road employees to carry out maintenance and traffic management roles, as the first main weekend event on the road

network saw an estimated 3.9 million displacements, mostly heading from inland areas to the coastal towns and cities. Once those domestic tourists arrive at the coast, along with those from further afield, they can rest assured that an additional 28,535 officers from both the National Police and Guardia Civil will be on hand to strengthen security in the main Spanish tourist areas from the 1st of July, as part of the government´s “Tourist Security” campaign launched by the Ministry of Interior to ensure the “tranquillity of the holiday”. The data released by the Secretary of State for security, Francisco Martínez, and his tourism colleague, Isabel María Borrego, shows that, as in previous years, the reinforcement of 11,796 police officers and 16,739 Guardia Civil troops will be deployed in key areas such as Andalucía, Asturias, Canarias, Cantabria, Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia and the Baleares. The officers will focus primarily on security on roads, stations, ports, airports, hotels, beaches, campsites and Entertainment celebrations, and will have a primary role o prevention of crime in order to ensure visitors enjoy a safe stay in Spain. Local policing has also been stepped up on the beaches of the coastal zones, with many municipalities which have beach areas moving officers from the inland areas to cover the coast. Regarding the movement of vehicles, although the 1st Summer Operation may well now be over, there are still many more to come. A similar situation occurs between the 1st and the 3rd and from the 14th to the 17th of August. Once the tourists have had their fun in the sun, the return operation will run from the 29th to the 31st of August. As well as monitoring the flow of traffic, there will be two campaigns against driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as well as speed. These will take place between the 14th and 20th of July in the case of drink and drug driving, and from the 18th to the 24th of August in the case of speed.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Pickled Onions and Red Squirrels “Woman chokes to death on pickled onion”, screamed the headlines of the local newspaper. Another headline, further down the page, caught my eye - “Temperatures to hit 80 degrees - hotter than the Canary Islands”. Some things never change; I remembered the local newspaper as always being very good on headlines, but rather weaker on actual news. Still, I did feel sorry for the pickled onion lady and her family, as well as reflecting on whether she would have survived if it had been a pickled egg. I had just returned for a rare, but brief visit to my UK home town of Bournemouth for a book event. It’s not that I don't like the UK; on the contrary I am still very fond of the country, it’s just that I am much happier living in the Canary Islands. I hoped that I had brought enough warm clothing with me. I needn't have worried; the weather was perfect and allowed me to indulge in visits to places that I loved. My first visit was to Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour, during the next glorious sunny day. I had fallen in love with this special place as a child, and continued to visit the island each year for many years during my days as a teacher, with parties of chattering school children. We were always intent upon seeing a red squirrel, but in those days, no self respecting red squirrel would dream of making itself known to 60 children under the age of eleven, clutching a worksheet and asking

when they could stop for a drink or the toilet during our walk across the island. This time, as I sat in the tearoom indulging in a Dorset cream tea, I actually spotted two baby red squirrels playing together on the lawn in front of me. It was a sight that I had waited to see for many years. As I sat watching the scene in front of me unfold, I began to reflect upon another island - the island that has been my home for the last ten years or so, Gran Canaria, one of the seven main Canary Islands. Even after a day or two, I had already begun to long for home as I was once again feeling that the UK had become a ‘foreign country’ to me. The currency was unfamiliar, I was now driving on the ‘wrong side of the road’, and the town seemed busier and more frenetic than I previously remembered. Some of my favourite shops had closed, there were new roads, and all the shop assistants seemed to be from another country. Traditional, grubby buses that had once ploughed infrequently through the town’s streets had disappeared, replaced by smart, clean, colourful buses, with an unfamiliar name, which appeared every few minutes or so. All too soon my brief visit to the UK was concluded, and I bought a selection of the usual expat treats that we cannot get at home. Sadly, I was flying with my least favourite airline; I had little choice at the time of booking, but hoped that their customer service had improved since the previous occasion. Sadly, I was wrong, and I was once again trapped in a cylinder full of people who had already drunk far too much alcohol before they boarded. Vodka and coke were spilt on seats with generous abandon, with cabin crew intent upon pouring yet more liquor down the throats of their young passengers. At least the cabin crew did not indulge in a novel game of “Throw and Catch the Toilet Roll” which had so entertained the staff, as well as infuriating passengers, on the flight to Tenerife the previous week. I settled to listen to a selection of soothing songs on my phone; I was grateful that the ear pods cut out most of the shrieking cacophony of noise from the group sitting behind me. Foolishly, I bought a sandwich from the trolley, but the steward claimed that he had no change. I handed over a note and was promised that the change “would be brought to me shortly”. I never did receive the change, despite men-

tioning it towards the end of the flight. I did not really expect to receive it, since the same thing had happened to me on two previous flights with this airline. I began to ponder on how much staff salaries were boosted by this little scam. I did not complain; I was just grateful to be reaching home and getting out of this tube of insanity at the earliest opportunity. Finally, we landed. The pilot played its usual trumpet salvo to announce that we had landed, as if it was some kind of celebration that he had actually managed to hit the tarmac in the right place. I escaped as soon as I could, vowing as usual, never to travel with this airline of nightmares ever again. Overall, it had been a good visit, but once again confirmed to me that the UK was no longer home. I had no longings and no regrets, but was just so pleased to be at home once again on our island in the sun. TALKING POLITICS ON EXITE RADIO With the municipal elections getting closer by the day, now just 10 months away, the political situation in Orihuela is still one of bitter contrast. From numerous politicians facing criminal charges, others being ousted and even the mayor facing attempts to overthrow him, the current bipartite team are still working together for what they feel is the best for the municipality. This week, Mark Nolan will once again be joined by three of the most influential characters from the field of local politics, discussing the recent changes,

cases and future as we head rapidly towards that date when we get to choose the next representatives. On Monday, Bob Houliston from the Orihuela Costa orientated CLARO group will be on air, then on Wednesday it is the turn of Pedro Mancebo from the central liberal CLR group will give his take on what´s been happening. On Thursday, it will be Martina Scheurer from the Los Verdes green party, the current councillor for the coast and representative of the Government, both answering questions as to the current situation, and updating us on what is going on during her regular weekly session. To hear what they all have to say, make sure your radio is tuned to 93.1fm, or you can listen via the website at www.exiteradio.com, with all three being on air just after 10 am joining Mark Nolan who will have already been bringing you the latest news from around the area from 08:00.

ORIHUELA BEACHES UNDER ASSESSMENT The beaches of the Orihuela Costa have come under the microscope again this week, as the annual audit assessing the quality requirements got under way. Last year the audits took place concurrently, but this year the different standard appraisers are arriving at different times, the first being the official assessors for the ISO certificates as well as the “Q” for quality. Five of the beaches on the Orihuela Costa have the Q flag standard, they are Punta Prima, Estaca, Cala Capitán, La Glea and Mil Palmeras, whereas eleven beaches have the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates. Martina Scheurer from the Los Verdes green party of Orihuela, the councillor of Orihuela Costa, told The Leader that she is “glad to communicate that until now there has been not even one non conform-

ity issue and that the results are very good”. The certificate of "Q" for quality is issued by the ICTE (Instituto nacional de Calidad Turistica en España) and the requirements are very severe. Even though the Chiringuitos do not officially form part of it, the auditor paid particular attention to them as well and has confirmed that everything matches the official requirements. The auditors will carry on with their work next week, whilst the inspections for the Blue Flags will take place in the second half of July.

THREE WHALES SIGHTED OFF DENIA

Participants in an Environmental program currently being run by volunteers and supervised by the Marine Environment and Fisheries Agency (SAMIP), have had three sightings of fin whales off the coast of Les Rotes, Denia. The City Council said that the sightings occurred on Monday and "they are quite common to these shores, especially between May and September." Volunteers watched the mammals while they were sailing in an area off El Trampolí in waters of the marine reserve of Cap de Sant Antoni. The first sighting was of two whales that were heading out to sea with a third whale moving closer to

the coast. For about an hour, volunteers followed the whales aboard their vessel manned by staff from SAMIP. The fin whale is the second longest animal in the world and second largest rorqual after the blue whale, growing to 27.3 metres (89.5 ft) long and weighing nearly 74 tonnes. The American naturalist Roy Chapman Andrews called the fin whale "the greyhound of the sea.” The initiative of the marine fisheries and environmental volunteering has attracted the interest of many people from all over Spain where in recent years there has been far more interest shown in coastal activities, species and birds.

EIGHTEEN NEW OFFICERS TO REINFORCE SANTA POLA POLICE A total of 18 new officers (15 men and 3 women) were sworn in, or promised positions as an interim officer, in the Santa Pola Policia Local last week. With the floating population of the town expected to rise beyond 150,000 residents during the summer months new agents are required to strengthen the force said the Councillor for Public Safety, Antonio Perez Huerta, at their inauguration on Monday. The ceremony was attended by the Santa Pola Mayor, Miguel Zaragoza, as well as Local police Chief Jose Miguel Zaragoza, a number of other members of the city council and serving police officers. Zaragoza welcomed the new officers and asked that, in the performance of their duties "they show the greatest respect for members of the public, as they are the face of the municipality and, often, the first point of contact". He said that "if as citizens, we worry about our neighbors, this concern is multiplied when you are

acting as a member of the police force. There will be situations of stress and risk, so I ask your more experienced colleagues, many who have chosen to be here today, to provide you with their support.” The Mayor also welcomed Local Police Officer Israel González Martínez back to the force. He began his professional career in 2005 as a trainee and earned his permanent position in 2008, since which has been continually training. During the period Gonzalez has won numerous awards and he is currently pursuing degrees in Law and Criminology at the University of Murcia.

ACCURACY OF PEGASUS CALLED INTO QUESTION Multayuda, a company set up to support motorists throughout Spain in defending the rights of drivers, believe that numerous fines issued by Spain´s airborne radar system, Pegasus, could be considered as dubious, after winning a case on behalf of a motorist caught speeding.

The company are self professed experts in Road Safety Law and the Law of Land Transport Management, and have over 20 years of service experience. They say that their goal is to give you the best possible defence for fines, throughout Spain, and say that they have helped over 500,000 drivers. The recent case revolved around the margin of error that is allowed for speeding motorists, where they argued that the wrong regulations were being consulted by the helicopter based system, as this margin was only valid for equipment used in ground based capture. According to the company, the regulations and margin being enforced by the DGT were from a 1992 technical draft, whereas they ought to be referring to a more recent version, which favours the driver. In some cases, the difference in the margin could mean a significant reduction in fines, and in the more severe cases, could mean the difference between being sent to prison or remaining free. The case which the company fought was on behalf of a driver who was punished for the “serious” offense of driving at 153 kilometres per hour on a road in Seville where the limit was 120 kmph. The driver was issued with a 300 euro fine and suffered the loss of two points for driving at a speed in excess of 30 kilometres per hour above the limit. However, taking the margin of error into account, the speed recorded could have been slightly below 150, thus taking it below the “serious” offense threshold, thus making it just a 100 euro fine and no loss of points. Capable of snapping speeding vehicles up to a kilometre away, Pegasus began operating in March of 2013, and has completed over 500 flying hours, checked 9,960 vehicles and clocked 1,778 drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 kilometres per hour above the allowed speed on the roads. As well as hefty fines, Pegasus has taken away a total of 1,360 points from drivers for speeding.

REVITALISE YOUR ENERGY FLOW WITH BODY HARMONY REFLEXOLOGY Reflexology - is the application of specific pressure to reflex points in the hands and feet. Reflexology is believed to be the result of stimulating and revitalising energy flow. Energy is basis of all life and a vital factor in healing. Reflexology is a gentle art, fascinating science and extremely effective form of therapeutic foot massage that has carved an impressive niche in the field of Complimentary Medicine. As a holistic therapy, reflexology aims to treat the body as a whole and endeavours to get to the root cause of disease and treat this, not the symptom. It can also be considered the equivalent of a Body tune up – The reflexologist doesn’t heal only the body, we can help to balance all the body systems, stimulating an underactive one, calming an overactive one. Every organ, structure and system of the body is mirrored in the feet and hands. They are connected through a system of energy zones within the body which become blocked or congested, causing the body to function less effectively. Reflexologists seek to relax tension and direct the free flow of energy throughout the body, thus encouraging normalisation of bodily functions and its capacity for self-healing. Best results are obtained by working the feet. WHO CAN IT HELP? This therapy is suitable for most people of all age groups, from babies to old age. It should not be regarded as a cure-all but most conditions can respond to treatment. These include muscular tension, back problems, migraine, insomnia, arthritis, emotional problems, menstrual and menopausal problems, asthma and others. People with progressive disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis can also get benefit. Reflexology treatment has great preventative value because imbalances can be detected and corrected at an early stage. It is not just for those with obvious health problems- an occasional treatment is a pleasant way of maintaining health and well-being HAND REFLEXOLOGY This is a holistic therapy which balances the whole body - the physi-

cal, mental and spiritual. The Egyptians gave hand reflexology the same importance as the feet and it is also very useful for self-treatment. Working with a client’s hands is very different from working with their feet. Hand-to-hand contact is much more personal. It links people in every day life- when we shake or hold hands, when we put a hand on someone’s shoulder to offer reassurance- it’s a warm greeting. All our experiences in life are represented on our hands- the way we have developed and how we deal with life experiences. The feet may have stronger nerve impulses to the brain than the hands, but this does not diminish the response to treatments through the hands. The clients will take more of an interest when we are working because they can see what you are doing and this can be a good thing as it gets the client more involved in the treatment and helps them to learn more about the body reflexes. There are many instances where working with the hands is more appropriate than the feet- where there is infection, injury, amputation and when the feet are too sensitive. In choosing to work in conjunction with the feet, hand reflexology can enhance the treatment. FOOTCARE It pays to take care of your feet. A bit of time and attention will not only keep your feet looking good, but will have further health benefits. As every part of the feet represents a part of the body, the relevance of treating feet with care and kindness is obvious!! Primary importance is good hygiene. Foot hygiene focuses on washing feet thoroughly every day to remove dead skin and eliminate bacteria. An average foot gives off about ? cup of moisture a day- the skin becomes soft and soggy, making it easier for friction to cause blisters, for chemicals to leak from shoes and cause dermatitis, and for athletes foot and other forms of fungi to take hold. Frequent washing will help combat the perspiration which cause smelly feet. Regular washing and careful drying will prevent cracks developing. A pumice stone and creams help soften hard areas. Problems such as corns, verrucas and athletes foot should be attended to, and a chiropodist consulted for persistent problems. Feet should also be kept warm and comfortable at all times- rapid change in temperatures have adverse effect on the

HEAVENS OPEN UP FOR MABS Patrick Lodge, from SIS, Spanish Insurance Solutions quite literally took to the skies this weekend, in aid of charity – MABS Cancer Support Charity Group and very bravely did a skydive over Castellon. It was an amazing experience, something I have wanted to do for many years and then was given the opportunity to Skydive in Castellon and raise some money for MABS, the local cancer support group. Having lost my wife to lung cancer last December, I wanted to do something which helped this charity and at the same time have some great fun. All of this I managed to do, and so far have raised over 300 euros for MABS for this particular event. There were 17 of us who were skydiving all for their chosen charities, and I am pleased to

advise we all came back safe and sound. What a memorable day, wonderful group of skydivers, and fantastically organised by the brilliant Nikki Luxford who was also raising money for her charity One Step Malawi. Not your normal weekend event and something which will stay with me years!!! ¨ HERE FOR YOU, WHEN YOU NEED US - MABS Cancer Support Charity Group – www.mabscancersupport.org. If you need help and support or would like to volunteer then visit our website today Congratulations to everyone that Skydived at the weekend . reflex and related organs. REFLEXOLOGY SHOES These shoes have “quills” which massage the foot and stimulate the reflexes and meridians while walking. This must not be used as a replacement for Reflexology, but it is beneficial in that they promote lymphatic drainage and circulation to the feet. They should be used in moderation as overuse can over stimulate reflexes, causing discomfort. The same can be said for other aids such as “innersoles” which also should not be over used. They are all effective for health maintenance but not for treating specific problems.

World Cup Final. Coverage of the final at the Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro (Kick-off 9.00pm), where the successors to 2010 champions Spain are crowned. This 20th staging of the tournament has been largely lauded as a great success, with a glut of goals, attacking football and some of the leading players in the world bringing their club form to the international stage. While several of the leading European nations made early exits, including Italy, England and the defending champions, the South American and CONCACAF sides demonstrated their ability, leaving few clues as to which team could find the consistency required to lift the trophy. A number of shock results added to the excitement and unpredictability of the tournament, but there have been relatively few surprises in the showpiece match over the years, with the last one being France’s victory over Brazil in 1998, and before that, arguably Italy’s triumph against West Germany in 1982 following their slow start to that campaign. However, Spain were unable to successfully defend their title this time around, losing

5-1 to the Dutch in their opening contest, before a further defeat against Chile sealed their fate just two games into their tournament. Argentina and Brazil began their campaigns among the favourites and they will know history is on their side if either have qualified for this encounter, as a team from South America has prevailed every time the continent has hosted a World Cup. SPAIN TO HOST GROUNDBREAKING TOURISM EVENT Spain will play host to a conference in September, the first of its kind to take place in Europe, which will focus on one of the fastest growing sectors of the travel industry and how businesses can capitalise on obtaining their share of that growth. In 2013, the halal tourism sector was valued at a staggering 140 billion dollars, representing some 13% of the entire global travel expense. In 2014, that figure is expected to grow to 192 billion dollars, so many are now seeing this niche market as an obvious choice when other sectors have seen reduced income capacity. The aim of the conference taking place in Andalucía is to bring together the global travel industry to discuss what the leaders in the field of travel can do to further increase the growth, and subsequent wealth, from the Muslim community. Event organiser Tasneem Mahmood, has said that the conference further aims to bring those currently active in halal tourism together with those trying to break into this sector, looking at areas where tourism has already seen benefits, as well as spreading into those yet to be targeted. With Russian tourism having been seen by many as the future of the industry in Spain, the recent figures have shown that visitors from Russia are declining, despite a wave of tours and focus trips given to travel agents from Russia. Mahmood continued,“This is a groundbreaking event for halal tourism which is directly reacting to current market trends and addressing the needs of the industry. It is the first time such a global event is being staged looking at halal tourism in detail”. The Halal Tourism Conference will take place between the 22ns and 23rd of September at the Granada Conference and Exhibition Centre, Andalucía, Spain. VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice Vistabella became the Hot Shot club this week with two separate Hot Shots. Lin and Charlie Watkins and Barry Norris were the first in the La Siesta 3 day trips competition swiftly followed by Lynne Bishop and Barbara and Arthur Brown on Tuesday in the Premier 20 League.

Lynne, Arthur and Barbara In the leagues we once again had a slightly mixed week with perhaps just a little bit more good than bad, on Monday Mike Regan’s 4 Wood Pairs side won by 3 points to 2 against a Greenlands team thanks to a 32 to 24 shots win and a win from Stuart Allman and Brian Dunn, then on Tuesday Fred Willshire’s side won by 4 points to 1 with a 33 shots to 29 overall win against San Luis and with a win for Ian Kenyon and Fred Willshire while Andy Leggatt and Arthur Brown managed a draw. On Tuesday evening we took on Greenlands in the Premier 20 League and won by 15 points to 3 and an impressive 194 shots to 106. At Home Barry Norris won the singles, Stuart Allman and Brian Dunn were successful in the pairs as were our trips team of Jenny Chaplin, Neil Burrows and Dave Chaplin but our biggest win came from the rinks thanks to Olwyn Ratcliffe, Sandra Burrows, Geoff Paylor and Eric Bishop. Away from home we won the singles thanks to Ian Kenyon and the trips with

Charlie, Lin and Barry Lynne Bishop, Barbara and Arthur Brown, while our rinks team of Gail Willshire, Andy Leggatt, Les Barber and Fred Willshire came with a storming last end finish to snatch a draw. Wednesday saw one of our least encouraging performances in the VCL when we took on league leaders Quesada Lions we lost by 8 points to 4 and 84 shots to 74. Lin Watkins, Andy Leggatt and Ian Kenyon snatched a last gasp win in the trips while Lynne Bishop, Tony French, Les Barber and Eric Bishop triumphed in the rinks. Friday again was a mixed day a great result for the Fairways with an 11 points to 3 win against San Miguel Moors by 109 shots to 87, wins coming from, Sandra Burrows, Bill Corbishley and Stuart Allman, Martin Foulcer, Barbara Brown and Richard Lee, Andy Leggatt, Les Barber and Ian Kenyon and Lin and Charlie Watkins and Jenny Bowman. Tony French, Anne Marie Stevenson and Eric Bishop held on for a draw to give us our final point. Unfortunately the Greeners were not so lucky and suffered a 10 points to 4 loss at Horadada against the Hawks and by 127 shots to 101. Our 4 points came from Jenny Chaplin, Brian Pointon and Dave Chaplin and Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Barry Norris. Come on you Greeners we need a great result next week.

LA SIESTA BOWLS CLUB By Norman Adcroft La Siesta Open Three Day Open Event. 28th 29th 30th June Saturday 28th June saw the start of our annual open trips competition and what a nice sunny weekend we had to hold it which contributed to some excellent bowling. There were a few surprises on the way to the final with some of the more fancied teams not getting beyond the groups, but perhaps not surprising to us, taking advantage of playing on our own green, we had a team in each of the semi-finals, but alas an all La Siesta final was not to be when John Ball, Dave Livesey and Barbara Cooper were beat by an excellent Greenland’s side made up of Phil and Mary Lockley Skipped by Chip Chapman. Our other team, Jean James, Jean Murphy and Norman Murphy did however win their Semi against an equally good Bonalba team, Graham and Sue Mills skipped by Barry Watson. The Final then saw a very exciting and closely fought game between Norman Murphy and his ‘pair of Jeans’ against Chip Chapman’s Greenland’s’ team with La Siesta just coming out on top. Well done to both teams for the exciting climax. Thanks must go to John and Mary Moss for organising and running the event including the raffle, Jim and Lyn (owners) for their catering skills (lovely baking Lyn) and anyone else who made this a superb Weekends Bowling. Pictured across, left to right, losing Semi Finalists John Ball, Dave Livesey and Barbara Cooper LS with Graham and Sue Mills and the Victors Jean James, Jean and Norman Murphy, with Runners up Phil and Mary Lockley with Chip Chapman. VCL Green Division 2nd July. Our opponents today were Greenland’s and it was honours even taking six points each. Our winners, Pat Harman (Ladies Singles) Alan Barton (Men’s Singles) and Joy Gardiner with Sue Jordan (Pairs) shots Greenland’s, 92-79. Chicken and Egg Winners 2nd July. By John Bailey On Friday the 4th July, the Horadada Hawks were at home, playing Vistabella Greeners. The sun was out, with a light breeze which helped everyone stay reasonably cool and more able to enjoy their game. Games seemed to be determined right from the start, with teams on both sides forging ahead. Only one game was turned around on the 11th end by the Hawks team, this helped bring the final result to a win for Horadada Hawks. Thanks to all our winning teams:Wayne Jackson, John Bailey, Tony Burchall. 21 - 13. Carol Linehan, Fred Trigwell, Terry Hucknal.l 21 – 17. Yvonne Hurlock, Bryan Eatough, John Hurlock. 42 - 6 Absolutely brilliant scoring. Fred Semper, Roy Collins, Alan Pugh. 23 – 9. Another scorching hot week, is it me or is it getting to hot to be playing bowls. The Navigators were at home to the Greenland’s Glosters and had a good 9 points to 5 win, the winners being Dave McGaw, Margaret Finlayson skip Shirley Hadaway: Martin Butler, Mike Surch skip Brian Duff: and Reg Jackson Derek Shirley skip Barry Sadler the other point came from a drawn game with Kathy Manning, Jeanette Gugerly skip Jim Manning. The Pilots made the long journey to Mazzaron, and after a 3 hour, 250 Klms round trip came home with only 2 points for thier troubles the only winners being Mo Taylor, John Morgan skip Bill Simms. The VCL team played away against San Luis Blues and managed to come away with a 6 points all draw the winners on the day were Tom Spencer Alan Castle in the pairs Mo Taylor, Bill Simms, Bobbie Simms skip Dave Hadaway in the rinks and the overall score adding the additional 2 points. Our plans are now beginning to take place to celebrate our 25th Anniversary on 15th Oct so watch this space for future events. Further information about La Marina Bowls club contact Steve Hindle on 648250035, or see us Facebook.

On Saturday we had our Captain’s versus President’s teams match and great fun was had by all, the Captain taking the day by a small margin. Wednesday found our VCL team playing away at Monte mar against The Gentlemen, another close match played in the most civil company, with plenty of good bowling all round. A good and fair result at 6 points each, always a good result away from home. Ladies singles: Irene Morrice 21-10. Mens singles: Merv Armstrong 21-03. Pairs: Jim Gracie and David Whitworth 15-19. Trips: Margaret Odell, Mick Smith and Stew Hamill 12-24. Rinks: Brian Taylor, John Newell, Ron Odell and Alex Morrice 19-20. Friday found us being entertained by La marina Navigators and played good bowls in great company. Navigators took the rinks by 4 to 2 and the shots, but taking 2 rinks away from home is never a bad result. Graham Hicks, Rob Clark and Richard Needham 10-16. Marianne Holtham, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 12-24. Carol smith, Mick Smith and Carolyn Harris 18-10. June Whitworth, Margaret Odell and Jane Hamill 9-38. ARENA PINATAR CONFIRMS 14 PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES

By Steve Hibberd Last Friday night in the Vicente Garcia Stadium boardroom, the new CD Torrevieja coach was unveiled. Galiana sat alongside President Vicente Boix, and Director of Football, Jose Antonio Alvarez, answering questions from the local press and tv. He brings with him Jose Antonio Gomes as his assistant, and Ruben Verdu as his physio, and without doubt, their target is promotion to div 2a at the first attempt. With pre season training starting on 15 July, it is expected that there will be players from last season, and some interesting new additions in attendance. The coaching staff will also be working with 4 youth team players, plus 3 from the 2nd team. Although dates for friendlies have not been confirmed, it's expected that they will all be at home against good quality opposition. Season tickets, at a bargain price of only 90 euros, are now on sale, and can be obtained from the Stadium every Wednesday from 6.30pm until 8.30pm, or from the Torry Army office from 19 July.

ROD IS A CHAMPION AT LAST What a finale we had to our Gents Medal Championship at Las Ramblas on Wednesday. There were 4 players in contention to take the title which is won by the player having the highest number of points from 4 of 6 medal rounds. Points are awarded to the top 5 places each month ranging from 6 for first place down to 2 for fifth with all other players submitting a card receiving 1 point. Rod Doel was in pole position with 14 points at the start of play and was first to tee off. He returned with a very respectable level par round of net 72 however he was concerned that this may not be enough particularly as 4 of our most consistent low handicap players were within 2 or 3 points. He was right to be concerned as although two of his pursuers posted a no return John Wheeler and Tom Hardie both came in with net 70 so Rod was reliant on others to take the top positions and the points to maintain his position. Fortunately for Rod the excellent scoring of recent days continued and even I managed to play my best round ever coming in with a net 69 winning Category 2 and securing the 5 points for second place on the day to move to sixth place in the Championship. Not to be out done Bryan Neal returned a magnificent net 67 to win Category One and take the days 6 points on offer to finish level with Rod on 14 pts. After a tense wait it was announced that Rod had held on to the top spot by virtue of having won 2 of the medal competitions compared to Bryan's one victory with John and Tom finishing on 13 points. Rod had finally won his first trophy after some 10 years of trying and punched the air in delight. Congratulations Rod on a well deserved win. The Ladies Championship also ended up being a close affair with Carole Wheeler finishing with 24 pts two ahead of Olga Douglas. In the final round both Carole and Olga recorded the same score but Carole took the 6 pts having the better back nine. The prize winners on the day were as follows: Cat 1. 1st. Bryan Neal 67 2nd. John Wheeler 70 (c/b) 3rd. Tom Hardie 70 Cat 2. 1st. Mike Chapman 69 2nd. Ken Meredith 70 3rd. Carole Wheeler 71. 2's Club. Rod Doel, Peter Dunn and John Wheeler The Guest Prize was won by Alan Martin with a net 72. Gent's Medal Championship Result 1st. Rod Doel 14 pts 2nd. Bryan Neal 14 pts 3rd. John Wheeler 13 pts 4th. Tom Hardie 13 pts Ladies Medal Championship Result 1st. Carole Wheeler 24 pts (c/b) 2nd. Olga Douglas 22 pts Away from the main event of Wednesday we started the week off on Monday with a Mulligan where the player may choose to retake a total of 4 shots: 2 on the front nine and 2 on the back nine. Weather conditions were perfect and with the course now in excellent condition this resulted in some brilliant scoring once again with the top 2 players both scoring an incredible 45 pts . Rod Doel continued his recent impressive form in first place edging out Geoff Biggerstaff on a count back. In third place with 44 pts following up his long awaited win last Friday was Brian Townend. On Friday we played a 'Counter Game' for the second time where the number of scores required is not known until after the hole has been completed as a counter indicating the number of scores is placed on the next tee. For obvious reasons this can be a frustrating but fun game and the team that had a winning smile at the end scoring an excellent 99 pts were Heinz Lei, Joyce McClusky, Harry (Guest) and once again Brian Townend. Heinz had a particularly good run on the back nine and scored 8 three pointers over the course of his round. By Mike Chapman

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN

Trevor Scammell won his second Grand Prix event of the summer, this time at La Serena, following his earlier victory at Roda. A front nine that included 7 pars for 19 points, placed him 2 points ahead of the field at the halfway stage. The Bristol Rovers supporter, now doomed to the Conference league, couldn’t however maintain his form for the remaining 9 holes, but a further 4 pars gave the former prison officer a creditable 11 pars overall and a winning 34 stableford points. The Hub´s almost draconian handicap system dictates he will now play his next round off 7.0, a five shot reduction in 2014. Hubbers popular captain, Simon Williams, steadily chips away his handicap at each event, resulting in a fine second place to Scammell, missing out on top spot by just the one point, in a round including 3 no scores. A back nine of 19 points proves his goal of an 18 handicap by the end of the summer is a realistic target for the Hub´s licensee. Regular Hubber John Spencer, accompanied by wife Teresa celebrated his 60 something birthday by sponsoring the day along with regular sponsors PJs Rentacars and sharing a delicious cake with members and guests alike back at the Hub. Results: N.T.P´s: Hole 6 (in 2) Andy Shaw, Hole 9 Dave Lethaby Hole 17 Shaun Smith PJ Rentacars Best Guests: 1st Sue Theakston 36 pts, 2nd Mick Kennedy 33 pts Hub Grand Prix: 1st Trevor Scammell 34 pts 2nd Simon Williams 33 pts, 3rd Shaun Smith 29 pts Picture shows Simon Williams and Trevor Scammell

EL PLANTIO 2 GOLF SOCIETY By John O'Brien This week we found ourselves a little light on the ground with only 14 players, it was decided that we would play a Greensomes competition, with each team being made up of 2 players, one player with a low handicap and one with a high handicap. Some excellent scores were recorded, so no surprises there. Two members who shall remain nameless struggled at first as they had been involved with friends from down under the previous evening, where they tried to create a shortage of wine in the Alicante region, it's amazing how difficult golf can be when the ball refuses to stay still. Well I think that was their excuse, anyway. The results this week: Nearest the pin hole 2: Martin Rickman, Hole 6: Henry Mellor. 3rd place Roger Marshall & Rod

Loveday H/cap 11.98 with a nett 51.02. 2nd place Ian Henderson & Lawrence Wanty H/cap 11.34 with a nett 49.66. 1st place Kenny Reddington & Bryan Watson H/cap 17.96, with a nett 44.04 The next competition is on Tuesday 8th July at El Plantio. Put your name on the list in the club house by Sunday, if you would like to play. Be sure to be there well before 9am on Tuesday. The Society meets on Tuesdays, Fridays & Sundays to play on El Plantio 2 par 3 course, new members are welcome to join the El Plantio Golf Society, where special membership price is available for anyone who joins the Society. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Corvera – an Update’ Over the last few years we have seen the closure of both Mosa Trajectum and La Tercia as a result of wáter and financial issues. Many golf developments are based around urbanisations where the waste wáter is taken, treated and then used to wáter the golf c o u r s e s . Unfortunately a number of the remote urbanisations have suffered from under population with the resultant lack of generation of waste wáter, resulting the courses needing to spend vast sums of money on wáter (circa €250K per annum) to keep the courses ‘alive’ but with a serious financial impact. Unfortunately it now looks like the Corvera resort could be the latest to suffer this fate because the course condition is now very poor and due to a lack of wáter and adequate finances the greens have not been watered for 12 days and in these high summer temperatures the greens will die very quickly. In addition to this the course manager has departed his job and the course has some financial embargo’s imposed upon them by the Spanish tax office. Although i hope a solution can be found quickly it look very much like Corvera will become the next in the line of courses to close in the Murcian región. Clearly with delayed plans to the international airport at Corvera and the delays in opening the theme park locally has radically changed the need for a local golf course and so perhaps poor timing rather than other elements have resulted in the current situation. I will of course keep you informed of any changes in the circumstances but the future looks bleak at this moment in time. QUESADA GS VISIT TO ALENDA GOLF COURSE Last Wednesday the society played at Alenda which is a course suited to players of all abilities. The course was in excellent condition. It was a hot summer’s day with everyone coming prepared with sun-cream and plenty of liquid refreshment. The game was an individual Stableford competition with 2 divisions with the MidSeason Trophy up for grabs for the overall winner. The players in Buggy no.37 who will remain nameless appeared to be competing for the “shortest drive”, not round the course but from off the tee. One managed a 2 foot drive only to be surpassed by a 2 inch drive off the tee. The winner of the Gold Division with 32 points was Eddie Scott who pipped his close but not bitter rival Roy Kavanagh on C/B. In third place with 31 points was Darryll Wright or Daryyl Wright as was printed on the start sheet. In the Silver Division the winner was recently joined member, Ian Fogarty with a very creditable 31 points followed by “smokin” Tony Patterson with 30 points and “steady” Terry Smith with 28 points. The “Roy” for the most shots played went to Dave Bartram who played quite well but had more than his share of bad luck. The Best Guest was Scots lad Gordon McGregor Jnr .The winners of the Nearest the Pins were Eddie Scott, Ann Hobbs and David James who after a shoulder op, which has kept him out all year, returned with a vengence and a birdie which also won him the sizeable 2’s pot. Well done David. There were a number of games in the annual knock-out competition with Tony Patterson overwhelming Anne Hobbs, and a number of very close finishes with Paul Flanaghan ending up victorious against Norman Lewis and Rod Day likewise against Terry Smith.

The battle between 2 close friends Roy Westlake and Victor Dew went to the wire with Roy winning it on the 18th in a nail biting finish. After the game the players returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations and a well earned drink or two and a tasty hot and a cold buffet kindly laid on by mine hosts Dave and Anita. The next game is at Alicante on Wednesday 16 July. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

CAPTAIN’S DAY AT THE CELTS CLUB DE GOLF

The Celts Club de Golf held their Captain's day on Saturday 28th June at La Serena Golf Club. The sun was shining with just a slight breeze to keep us cool. 47 players participated in the golf, we only had one cancellation, due to over golfed. Our Captain Julian Lopez started off the day with his drive in, however, he was not expecting when he hit the ball, it would EXPLODE. La Serena was in excellent condition, the greens first class due to the hard work of Wayne and his staff. La Serena is the home course for The Celts and once again we were looked after in a manner we are accustomed to. Our thanks to all at La

Serena. To finish off the day we had the Captain's dinner and dance at El Prado restaurant in Sam Miguel, All the golfers were there with their wives and partners, mothers, sisters and children. Our singer and main entertainer for the evening was Jackie McCormack, an excellent singer, who is always in high demand for her excellent voice and gift of the gab. However, our very own amateur sinner, I mean singer, Ritchie Heaton, tried to entertain us with HIS version of Delila. We will leave it at that ! Tom Jones eat your heart out. The results of the day were as follows. The Captain's prize was won by one of our newer members Julie Russell with an excellent score of 42pts. As our competition was a Spanish Federated game, she is in for a very big handicap cut. 2nd. Dave Cosson 40pts. In class 1. 1st. Camillus Fitzpatrick, 2nd. Eddie Wall,. 3rd.Philip Mountford. In class 2.1st. Bev Ellender, 2nd. Dean McCluskey, 3rd. Kevin Fitzpatrick. The gross score winner was John O'Brien. NTPs winners. John O'Brien. Tony Edwards. Bev Ellender. Geoff Ellender. The two's winners were Tony Edwards and Harry Lee. The Celts meet several times a week at La Serena golf course, should you wish to join us as a member or as a guest, please contact our President John O'Brien at johnobrienalicante@gmail.com

The Friendly Bar Golf Society

Today Thursday 3rd July, we had our "Captains day" at Vistabella Golf. 38 members and guests turned out for a wonderful days golf. Thanks to some sponsorship from Vistabella golf, a great deal of organising by captain Tony Macmillan and secretary Steve Hamilton, not to forget a lovely after game buffet at Cafe Uno , set out for us by Pete and Lisa Bonsor and staff. Everyone went home with a prize at the end of the day, whether their individual game was good or bad. So all told we all enjoyed the benefits of our society. On the last Thursday of June, 30 intrepid and enthusiastic golfers left the Friendly Bar for the our once a month golf society day out. The golf course in question was Alicante playa de San Juan and all of the players agreed that the trip was worth the effort, I would go there just to view the wild life ,I was amazed to see how many variety of bird life on the lakes and surrounding area there were, next time take the camera. The golf course itself was pleasing to play ,only fault were the greens which were quite slow , but for the rest of the course I can only say it was a pleasure to be in Spain ,with good company and on the golf course. Winner on the day with 33 points was Janet Bryan ,2nd Deklan Meila 29 points and 3rd John (Scouse) Bryan 29 ,(that’s on count back ) ie family day out! Longest Drive Dave Simpson (guest) nearest the pin Bill Gladman , best guest player Simon Ashworth from Jersey who it was a pleasure to share a buggie with. Just a hint for next time trust the sat-nav or not as the case may be , also look out for stray golf balls Deklan. Next day out on the 31st of July is the Steve Adams Memorial trophy at Font del Llop golf club, Steve Adams who was the Brother of Dave (owner of the Friendly Bar ) sadly died at a young age of cancer. We hope for a good turn out and mayby raise a few euros for charity. Jim you need to look at my Handicap again. Mike K

SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY - THE COLIN ARKLEY TROPHY

www.yourlocalnewspaper.info

39

ALFIE’S GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Morris An excellent turnout of 38 members and guests made the short trip from Alfie's to Las Colinas last Thursday for our monthly meeting, and also the second round of the Eclectic Cup. In 2? years playing with Alfie's, I cannot remember as many players for one monthly meeting and the fact that we were playing at Las Colinas was a factor in that. The course itself was in its usual excellent condition and where there were signs of wear and tear, remedial work was being carried out. On to the match, and only two players beat their handicap on the day, not a reflection of the standard of play but probably two factors prevented a lot of high scores coming in, that the greens were very fast and most of the tee boxes were moved back by a considerable distance.

This week San Miguel Golf Society, the longest established society in the area, paid its monthly visit to the local course with similar credentials - Villamartin. Nearly forty golfers battled it out in Stableford format to go home with the very prestigious Colin Arkley Trophy , played for in memory of a past President & one of the earliest members of SMGS. As the years keep rolling by & the membership keeps growing it's not surprising how many of the more long-standing members still remember Colin's tremendous enthusiasm & input which played such an important role in laying the foundations & principles on which today's society is built...... long may his memory live on. The course was in great condition & together with the slightly cooler temperature, good scores looked very likely. We were not disappointed as many below par scores were carded but one popular member exceeded even his wildest ambitions by shooting 6 points more than his nearest rival. Before we go into the full results it should be mentioned that the Liverpool duo of past-Captains Ken Flaherty & Marg Birtwistle did KO match-play battle in the singles. It was a tightly fought affair in which Ken managed to edge out Marg by eventually winning 3 and 2. Good luck to Ken in the semi-final & well done to Marg flying the flag

for the fairer sex into such a late stage of the competition. NTP's went to Capt Steve Davis (6), John Aitchison (9), Steve Fleet (13) & Mick Roscoe (17). Phil Bache picked up this week's guest prize. The 2 special awards for the best nine but not in the prizes went to Jacquie Rust (20 on the front 9) & Mike Jordan (21 on the back 9). Top 4 in the bronze category were Norman McBride (34), John Parker (35), Keith Stevenson (36) & top score of the day with 44 points was Mick Roscoe who also picked up theColin Arkley Trophy to be held for 12mths. Silver's winners were John Aitchison (36 C/B), Phil de Lacy (36 C/B), Noel Bannon (37) & Alan McDonald in top spot with 38. Gold division was a tight result - Colin Rust in 4th (36) then three 37's had to be separated by count-back which meant Theo Boelhouwer was 3rd, Capt Steve Davis was 2nd leaving Barry Roehrig in first place due to a tremendous 22 on the back which included a birdie and an eagle! Well done to all those in the prizes & don't forget to keep in touch with www.smgs.org for all society news or simply give Phil a quick buzz on 966 774 197 for any details of future Wednesday meetings.

Clarkes Bar Golf Society

This week we returned to one of our regular haunts, the wonderfully designed course at Peraleja. We arrived on a hot but breezy day to find that the fairways had benefited greatly from all the hard work being put in on the course by the staff, the greens were wonderfully receptive even to shots played with woods but a little on the slow side. This did not seem to detract from the scoring as most of our players bettered 30 points. There were also 4 players recording a 2 on the par 3s congratulations to Martin Cunningham (2nd Hole), John Porter (16th Hole), Roy Welburn (9th Hole and Mick Wilkinson (16th Hole). The rest of the results were: Nearest the pin on hole 9 was Roy Welburn Nearest the pin on hole 16 was John Porter Nearest the par 4 11th in 2 was Roy Welburn Longest Drive on hole 18 was Brian Murphy Winner with 39 points Patricia Creegan (despite a cracked rib) Runner up with 35 points on count back was Martin Cunningham just pipping Billy Raine and Tommy Clarke. Next week we are at Vistabella meet at the bar at 08:00. Remember the 17th is our Charity Day in aid of Help for Heroes at La Serena please make every effort to attend, guests are more than welcome cost is 35 euros including a buggy.

Michael Morris took second place with 34 points but the winner on the day, with an amazing 44 stableford points, was Wayne Stevenson. Up until three months ago Wayne in his own admission was really struggling with his game, but all the hours spent on the range are now bearing fruit and his handicap is flying down. Congratulations to Wayne and all the other prize winners on the day, who were as follows:Nearest the pin in 2 (hole 4) - Nigel Glasson Longest drive (hole 18) - Tony Hall Nearest the pin (hole 7) - Phil Lancaster Best Guest prize (40 points) - Chris Udell The usual thanks to our committee, Anita at Alfie's for the post match buffet and to Mike Probert from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services for arranging our day out. Last but not least thanks to all you guys, especially Tony and Sandie Hall, for the (totally unexpected) cards, presents and birthday cake for my 50th. Very much appreciated and thanks once again. Next month (July 31) sees us at Las Ramblas and once again the list is almost full. If you want to play please get in touch with myself at Alfie’s Bar, La Ronda Centro Commercial, Lomas de Cabo Roig or contact our secretary Sandie Hall at alfiesgolfsociety@gmail.com.
