CALA MOSCA BUILDING PLANS RESUBMITTED
Following years of objection, battles, protests and discussion, the developer who purchased the land at Cala Mosca, Gomendio, has submitted revised plans which the company hopes will allow for building on an area known as the last unspoilt plot of land on the Orihuela Costa. The councillor for planning in the municipality of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata of the PSOE, announced this week that the company has modified the
project based on an environmental study which was conducted to assess the impact the development would have on the area. In terms of the revised plans however, one surprising element of the proposals which now take the environmental impact study into consideration is the fact that the promoter has not reduced the number of dwellings they intend to build. As per the original proposal, these latest plans still provide for 1,500 homes on the land, so quite how the study has changed the development is unclear. Continued on Page 2

Continued From Page One An endangered plant, the “jarilla cabeza de gato” whose scientific name is Helianthemum caputfelis, dwells especially in the uniquely environmentally rich area of Cala Mosca, along with a snail, Tudorella Mauritanica, both at risk of extinction and protected. In 2013, a campaign by the coastal CLARO political group secured 1,000 signatures from residents hoping to protect the area, adding to the 7,000 strong signatures previously submitted in 2010 in a campaign that reached the European union, with Bob Houliston from CLARO, and the Mayor of the municipality, Monseratte Guillén, petitioning the newly appointed European parliament this year to ensure that they would continue to recognise the fight for this green area, which they duly did. With the onus on protecting the environment for the creatures that reside within the area, there was also considerable concern from human residents who were worried that the only piece of open land that leads onto the Mediterranean coastline would be destroyed by the construction of the proposed housing estate. On the other side of the coin of concern are a number of residents who offer no respect for the area at all. Despite the town hall frequently blocking off access to cars along the rugged cliff edge, the boulders put in place to prevent that access seem to mysteriously disappear, and cars still continue to drive on the open terrain that leads to a sheer drop, causing disturbances in the ground that frequently rain rocks and stones onto the beaches below. Fences and gates have been removed or destroyed in the past, to enable pedestrian access too, despite warning signs of the danger, and with no concern for any damage being caused to the land in question. Even this month, a local Spanish television station has taken up the plight of a number of complainants who visit the beaches at the bottom of the cliff side. However, these complaints that are not based around the almost impossible and extremely dangerous access points down to the beach, but because other visitors are allowing their dogs onto the sandy area and into the sea. The Councillor for the coast responded by pointing out that the beaches of Cala Mosca are not officially recognised as beaches, and are therefore not part of any routine patrols by the police. However, the councillor has now asked the police to make frequent checks on the area and deal with any issues that they may see relating to safety, security or other potentially illegal activities as a result. Indeed, as they are not official beaches, they most certainly do not have any
Monday, 14th July, 2014 life guard services, which has been a complaint at the start of the summer as the contract for the official beaches was delayed, but in this area without any kind of protection, and where access and egress in the event of an accident would prove extremely difficult, the question of beach safety is clearly not the issue for those who chose to use the area. Whichever way we look at the problem of Cala Mosca, there are those against the development, and those in favour. Indeed, one clear benefit to allowing the construction to continue would be the contractually required footbridge over the N-332 main road in the area. The construction will also avoid the council facing a legal claim from the builder who was sold the land The plans have now been formally presented to Valencia, who will study if or how they comply with the requirements of the environmental impact study completed, and if they seem to think they are in order, then the next stage to potentially allow for building to commence and the area would begin, although the next stage would then take into account other matters of consultation relevant to urban planning, such as traffic, aesthetics, infrastructure, waste and the like, before the final approval for home to be built on Cala Mosca is given. The plans, although extremely detailed and large, are available in the offices of the Planning Department in the town hall of Orihuela, which can be consulted by anybody wishing to see exactly where these buildings are set to appear, although Zapata has stressed that during this first consultation period, only arguments related to the that environmental study can be presented, and it is in the next stage when objections based on other matters can be raised.

SECOND DEMO BY MONTECID RESIDENTS Following on from the report in The Leader 4 weeks ago we are delighted to report that some improvement works have recently been carried out in Montecid by the Monforte del Cid Council, although, according the Neighbourhood Association, by no means anywhere near enough. Work completed includes re-painting all the white lines and crossings in the public roads, removing the burnt out MASA sales office, clearing of the weeds from the Council owned areas of the urbanisation, installing weight limit and traffic signs and the start of work on the entrance road to overcome the drainage problem!
The residents of Montecid say they have to endure large numbers of unfinished houses, rubble, decay, neglect and a complete lack of services and they are only remembered during election periods or when the press publishes an article of protest from residents. Well hopefully that might mean some more action because following 8 years of frustration the Neighbourhood Association were on the streets again last Sunday when they held another demonstration in the Town Hall Square in Monforte Del Cid. Around 60 residents took part which they hope will further encourage the Council to fully complete, maintain and adopt Montecid.
CASTING ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA Spanish filmmakers Victor Mondejar (Producer / screen writer), Pablo Riquelme and Stephen R.Scott (Directors) were on the Orihuela Costa on Friday, casting for their next film. They were looking to recruit an “English speaking” female, in her 60´s to play the role of the mother of one of the main characters in the film due to be shot in August. As Spanish residents of Orihuela and Elche, Pablo explained that they wanted to shoot this film in English, “in order to get the maximum distribution possible”. Meanwhile, Stephen, who met Pablo when the pair studied at Alicante´s Ciudad de la Luz studios, explained that they wanted to cast from the local community as they see the value that the British residents bring to the area, and having found the locations for the shoot nearby, Orihuela Costa seemed “the best place” to start the process for this “main role”. Of the many people who turned up, they were so impressed by "two or three" of the ladies, they look set to
get a call back for next week, with one of them perhaps starting on the path to being the next big thing on the silver screen.

COURT DATES FOR NINE MEMBERS OF ORIHUELA PP The nine former councillors from the previous Partido Popular run council of Orihuela facing criminal charges for corruption will appear before the courts on the 28th, 29th and 30th of July. The Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community issued notice for court number 3 of Orihuela to investigate the alleged crime of trespass, investigating the payment of numerous bills dating back to 2008. Therefore, on the 28th of July, the current head of the party, Pepa Ferrando, will appear at 09:30. Ferrando is also facing other unrelated charges in connection with payments to a company named Pepa Ferrando S.L., for which she denies any involve- Former mayor of ment, as she states that Orihuela, José she was not involved Manuel Medina with the company thought to have been set up with her sister at the time the firm was awarded contracts by the town hall. On the same day at 11:00, Antonio Lidón will appear, followed by Manuel Abadía at 12:.30. On the 29th of July, it will be the turn of Antonio Rodríguez Murcia to answer questions at 09:30, followed by Ginés Sánchez at 11:00, and finally, former councillor for the coast José Antonio Aniorte at 12:30. Then, on the 30th of July, the last three in this case will appear, Antonio José Ortiz at 9:30, José Manuel Cutillas at 11:00 and Antonio Rodríguez Barberá at 12:30. This investigation stems from a complaint lodged by the socialist Antonio Moreno in 2009, which highlighted the existence of “several irregularities” committed in 2008 in the city of Orihuela and thus claimed that numerous invoices had been paid by the government, approved between the 2nd of June and the 13th of October, despite reports of irregularities. After learning of the complaint, Pepa Ferrando said that the members of the PP are “victims” in this case, and how it was “curious” that the complaint has come “five years later, less than a year before the municipal elections”. Those involved deny any wrong doing and, according to Ferrando, will
attend court, “with the same indignation of the same tranquillity” in order to prove their innocence. Meanwhile, the former mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, who led the government during the era in question, appeared in court on Thursday, facing criminal charges in association with the so called “caso Brugal”, relating to the award of the waste collection contract in the municipality. Facing questions from the judge, Lorente described the financial management of the government under her lead as “flawless”, whilst also claiming that “it is undisputed” that she had “nothing to do with it” in reference to the alleged financial irregularities under investigation. Charged for the alleged crimes of corruption, insider trading, disclosure of secrets, prohibited activities to authorities and fraud, Lorente explained after the hearing that, “The prosecutor asked me about everything from the time of 2005 to almost the day I stopped being mayor”, stating that she answered all questions “telling the whole truth”, with documents where necessary, whilst feeling “calm and at peace”. A group of protestors had gathered outside the courts, armed with placards, they chanted cries of “corrupt”, “thief” and general complaints against the PP as Lorente moved by peacefully and smiling. The same protestors also berated the previous mayor of Orihuela, José Manuel Medina, also appearing in a separate hearing to face corruption charges. Medina did not pass quite so calmly though, with witnesses saying he took offence to one of the protestors and approached him, with a discussion breaking out, before officers from the national police intervened. It is alleged that Medina was videoed handing over a bag of cash, but the defense claim that this money was for legal services and not connected to the “caso Brugal”.

MILITARY SALUTE TAKEN IN LA MATA The town square of La Mata was once again dedicated to celebrating the armed forces on Thursday, as the feast of San Cristobal was honoured for the 21st time. Representative of the armed forces started to arrive at 08:00 in the morning, forming a static display of units from the army, air force and navy, along with the police and Guardia Civil, as well as other military support teams. At 12:30, the flag hoisting ceremony was presided over by Teniente General Rafael Comas and representative of the government, Luís Santamaría. Following that formal ceremony, a dog show featured teams from both the police and UME emergency crews taking part. Later in the day, a parachute display team joined in the celebrations, before a tribute to those who have lost their lives in service was attended by the Government Delegate, Serafín Castellanos. Finally at 20:00 mass was celebrated, before honours and awards were presented to those in attendance, until the sun started to set on a momentous day which closed with the lowering of the flag as a final tribute, accompanied by the band of the air academy of San Javier.

LEADER VALUING THE WORK OF POLICE DOGS ADVERTISING HOTLINE
As the UK government has cut funding to police forces over the last 4 years by some 20%, some of the first hatchets have slashed away dog and mounted sections, with hundreds of dogs being retired since 2009, and at least 5 forces disbanding their mounted sections completely. In Spain, the opposite is happening, with the value of police animals being celebrated, and more dogs and horses being used in the detection of crime and assisting the security services in their duties. In 2013 in Spain, expert dogs, often referred to as “cadaver dogs”, were active in solving 15 major crimes with the Guardia Civil alone, yet in the first six months of this year, that figure has already reached 16 occurrences. From their base with the Servicio Cinológico de la Guardia Civil in El Pardo, four of their specialist dogs have been showcased this week. Elton, Pipo, Dzana and Fatal are Belgian Shepherds, and are able to detect the odour of human remains for years after the person has died, even able to distinguish between human and animal remains. Even if blood has been cleaned away using disinfectant or other chemical cleaners, these dogs can still detect the often sordid truth hiding underneath, as was the case in June, when a murder took place and was hidden by the perpetrator who meticulously cleaned the scene of the crime, as well as all clothing worn during the act, hiding all evidence of wrongdoing. But Elton and Pipo, who train daily with their human companions Juan Manuel Sánchez and
Israel Herrero, found traces of blood, imperceptible to the eye and odourless, which incriminated the main suspect as the culprit. In April, the dogs took part in the search of a site where a dismembered and partially buried body was found near Las Rozas. Suspicions pointed to a relative of the victim, those suspicions confirmed when the dogs clearly identified a number of locations containing blood deposits, and even the murder weapon, an axe which had been cleaned of all traces, or so the murderer thought. As part of their training, when one of these dogs finds a piece of evidence, they simply remain in place, without digging or even touching the site, so as not to damage or contaminate evidence, alerting their handler of their find. Whereas the use of dogs as “expert witnesses” may seem an unusual practice, but the value of their work is self evident in an ever increasing number of cases. Israel Herrero agrees that although “much progress has been made”, they must all “continue working to improve, so that increasingly more detail can be found and we can cope with any situation”.

GAZING INTO LA ZENIA’S ROA D SYSTEM Residents of urbanisations surrounding the Rambla de las Estacas on the Orihuela Costa are invited to a public consultation in the town hall at 11:00 on Friday the 1st of August, to receive information on how the area is to be subject to restoration work that will see the zone classed as a Site of Community Importance, and what you can do to help. As such, workers will move into the area and clear away a number of items, including invasive plants, and replace them with native flora which will allow the area to grow in a more natural way, thus converting the site to an environmentally valuable area. The urbanisations affected are those situated in the Plan Parcial C2 Playa Flamenca zone. Once finished, it is hoped that everybody will do their bit to preserve the area, by not dumping rubbish and not planting invasive or alien plants. As well as the environmental benefits, the plan could also increase the value of properties in the area, which will now be bordering a protected and listed green zone on the Natura 2000 database. Over 100 people attended the star gazing night at Playa Flamenca last weekend, with children and adults, of muntiple nationalities, joining the experts to look through the three telescopes provided at the night sky. The event was organised on behalf of the town hall by MUDIC, the Museo Didáctico e Interactivo de Ciencias de la Vega Baja del Segura, to give it the full name, an educational initiative who receive funding from the town hall towards pieces of equipment like the telescopes, but staffed entirely by volunteers with a passion for sharing their knowledge with the countless people who participate in such interactive science initiatives as the one held on the Orihuela Costa, which they also plan to repeat in the future. Details of the upcoming Festival Flamenco have been released, the first of its kind on the Orihuela Costa, taking place on the 29th, 30th and 31st of July. On the Tuesday, Flamenco singers Alicia
Carrasco “Mujer Klórica” and Andrés Hernández will perform at the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre at 8pm. The next two nights, the show will move to the open air, taking place at the Paseo Marítimo at 10 pm on both the Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, singers Rancapino and Antuan Muñoz will be accompanied by dancer Cynthia Cano. On Thursday, singer Lola Montoya and Bvr Flamenco Big Band will be joined by singing and dancing duo La Yinka y Ana Balpardo. It is hoped that this free festival organised through the town hall will bring a taste of traditional Spanish entertainment to the visitors and residents, and may be continued in the future if successful. The army of town hall workers employed through a scheme whereas unemployed residents of the municipality are given the opportunity to work and train during a temporary contractual period are still working their way through the Orihuela Costa. They are still currently involved in clearing the streets of weeds and other debris, before moving on to clear some of the apparently abandoned park and garden areas. A progress report on the status of the project for revising the roads around the La Zenia roundabout has been verbally received by the town hall. The project was allegedly submitted to Valencia by the Alicante roads department about a month ago, and is now waiting for them to return it through that process. Once formally approved, this will allow for the redirection of traffic in the area of the back streets near the Consum supermarket, thus easing traffic flow more. However, the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has pointed out that the threat of the closure of the two access roads is still suspended as per the agreement, and there is no current threat to the roads being closed, despite the concerns of a small number of protestors who took to the streets last week.
The town hall has pointed out to Alicante that they are keen to progress as soon as possible, so much so the money required to pay for the work is ready and waiting to be spent.

MANCEBO WARNS OF BUILDING COLLAPSE Clr spokesman, Pedro Mancebo, warned the Orihuela Planning department last week of several homes in la Plaza de Santa Lucía in the hamlet of Barrio Nuevo, just to the east of the city, that are in imminent danger of collapse. Although none of the properties are occupied they are still a danger to passers by and he urged the Planning Department to take steps to both protect the public and secure the buildings so as to avoid damage to both passers by and those who are reckless enough to attempt illegal entry to the site often looking for material to steal. Mancebo said that the metal fence erected around the site a couple of years ago is not enough and are "he receives many complaints about the possible the danger to pedestrians." He explained that four of the five houses that make up the site are municipal property, so he insisted on the need for the City Council to act to avoid unnecessary hazards or accidents.
The Orihuela Councillor said that a simple metal fence around the site is no solution.

MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN DENIA BULL CHASE A 56 year old man was hospitalized and had to undergo intensive surgery at the Regional Hospital after suffering a brutal goring by a bull during the week long Bull Chase carried out in the town last Sunday. The accident took place just before 2pm on the very last chase of an otherwise enjoyable fiesta when the man stumbled as he attempted to run and jump into the sea. Despite the efforts of other revelers the onslaught was horrific. As the man slipped near to the edge of the harbor the very last bull of the day, severely gored him in the crotch area.
the local youngsters try to make the bulls fall into the sea without using their arms or hands. A square bullring is built in the harbour, leaving the side leading to the water wide open. Marching bands and musical groups then provide entertainment for the waiting crowds, until the bulls appear. The young bulls are let loose in the streets before running along the sea front until they reach the bullring. Those in the enclosed area then run alongside until either they, the bull or both end up in the water. The

animals are then brought back towards the shore. Whilst human injuries are usually reported there is rarely any mention of the bulls that drown as a result of them jumping or falling into the water. Meanwhile in the Pamplona Bull Run a 23 year old man from Nottingham has been admitted to hospital in a serious condition after Tuesdays second running of the bulls. The man is suffering from a chest wound and has several broken ribs. By Tuesday, Red Cross workers had attended to 44 people in the streets of Pamplona, 36 of whom required hospital treatment.

BULL RUN FUN IN MIL PALMERAS
More than 400 people took part last weekend in the Mil Palmeras Bull Run although on this occasion the event was carried our rather more humanely with inflatable bulls, rather than the real thing. The whole town entered into the spirit with over 20 bars and restaurants offering a selection of drinks and tapas together with the local specialty, the tortilla skewer, while the bulls roamed around the square teasing locals and tourists alike. The Nadia Marquez School of Flamenco opened the entertainment. They were followed by a number of local musicians including the School of Modern The man was quickly stabilized and taken by ambulance to the Red Cross Hospital de Dénia. Initially, particularly as the goring had been inflicted in the posterior, it was feared that his condition was serious. However, a health centre source said that surgery was successful he confirmed that the man was now stable and under observation following an operation. Sunday was the fourth serious injury since the start of the Bous a la Mar, Bulls to the sea, celebrations in Denia, a 200 year old festival which takes place in an enclosure at the edge of the harbor and where

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
THE CHARTER TRIP Readers who know Gran Canaria may have spotted what looks like the rusting hulk of a plane near the main road near Bahia Feliz. No, it is not the latest acquisition by my least favourite airline, or one that failed to land at the right airport, but part of a film set. More about the plane later. We tend to forget that popular tourism in the Canary Islands and Peninsular Spain, is a relatively modern phenomena. Certainly, influential and wealthy Europeans would visit Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, where its beautiful Las Canteras Beach was a popular destination for the few cruise ships that plied the Atlantic before the two World Wars and the Spanish Civil War. Despite the opening of Gran Canaria’s Gando Airport in 1930, it was only in the 1950s that Gran Canaria would begin to receive significant numbers of tourists; not from the UK, but from Scandinavia. During Christmas 1957, the Swedish airline, Transair AB, organised a flight to Gran Canaria with all of its 54 seats occupied. This was an historic moment, since it was the first flight of the new charter market and the beginning of the mass tourism market that Gran Canaria enjoys today. Gran Canaria has always been popular with the Scandinavian tourist industry, which continues to the present day. GUARDAMAR BANS ANIMAL CIRCUSES A motion tabled by the Esquerra Unida de Guardamar has been approved unanimously, which now lists the town of Guardamar del Segura amongst the growing number of locations to ban circuses with animals. The text of the motion was to confirm the town hall´s commitment to “ethical, social and environmental principles and with respect to not cause or permit the cruelty and suffering to animals”, stating that “the exhibition and display of animals in circuses and fairs in the city” is prohibited. The group stated in the proposal that “animals should not be abused or be subject to acts involving their behavioural changes such as animals used in circuses. Despite being raised in captivity, they are still wild animals and as such their behaviour cannot be controlled and usually the only way to keep them more or less docile or submissive is through violent acts”. The motion was passed unanimously, demonstrating the commitment of all political groups to this problem, in a municipality with a major environmental concern for legacy and everything related to environmental issues. The Los Verdes green party say that they submitted a similar motion in Orihuela some years ago, but the move was rejected by the Partido Popular majority. With the adoption of this motion Guardamar will be included in the list of towns in Spain free of animal circuses and fairs, a list that now exceeds 170 locations nationwide.

GOVERNMENT SETS OUT PLANS TO BAN SALE OF DOGS AND CATS The Spanish government is considering banning the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores under a law aimed at protecting the rights and welfare of the animals.
Work on the bill began late last year with the minister for Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, stating that his department are working towards protecting the animals. The legislation would set out a series of restrictions and responsibilities to establish the basic rules on trade and dog and cat ownership, with regular inspections and controls for compliance, and establishing a system of offenses and penalties. In this draft which is set to be presented shortly, the law will only relate to dogs and cats, with the exception of “animals owned by the Ministries of Defence and the Interior and its autonomous bodies or assigned to the Security Forces and local police”. Specifically featured in the bill are laws to prevent the mistreatment and torture of animals, in fact any action that results in the unnecessary harm to dogs and cats, including abandoning them, fighting,
amputation of the ears or tail and parts thereof, the use for public entertainment or advertising that may cause distress, pain or suffering, using the animals for bait and killing cats and dogs without the express and authorised veterinary euthanasia methods. Fundamentally, the text also states that “the marketing of animals in pet stores is prohibited, as well as exhibition and display to the public for commercial purposes”, thus banning the sale of these animals from pet shops. In addition, attempting to sell, donate or give up for adoption a dog or cat without identification by microchip will be prohibited. Owners of dogs and cats as well as shelters for abandoned pets, are subject to obligations to ensure the welfare of animals, which must have an identification microchip. The financial penalties for breaking the law range from 100 to 3,000 euro fines for minor offenses, between 3,001 and 30,000 euro for serious offenses, and between 30,001 and 200,000 euro for those classed as very serious offenses. Within that “very serious” category includes killing a cat or dog if not for approved reasons of animal welfare, animal health, public health, environmental or public order, using animals for fighting, neglect resulting in death, mutilations and the sale of animals in pet stores.

TOWIE COMES TO VILLAMARTIN F
or those of you who are following the TOWIE storyline Elliot Wright, the proprietor of Eduardo’s Restaurant in Villamartin, and Chloe Sims seem to be getting closer by the day. Together for a little more than two months they are already hinting that their relationship could go much further than the on screen connection that they display. In deed the couple, who both have a child from a previous union, are already suggesting that they are considering starting a family together. They made the announcement in a recent interview that they held with OK Magazine, in which they also spoke about their hopes for the future. 'I’m hoping it’s going to be a long-term relationship,' Chloe said while Elliot said 'it’s definitely love but we’re taking it slow.' Well there’s no doubt that since his arrival into the ITV series last year, Elliot has certainly made an impression with the ladies but he now says that he has everything he wants in Chloe. He said 'I first told her that I love her when we were in a very romantic state and said that if I was to fall in love again it would be with someone like her.' Well now the production Company, Lime Pictures, have shown that they too want to see the relationship develop in the programme and in order to
expand on the current storyline they are bringing the couple over to the Orihuela Costa and to Villamartin Square where filming for the new series will take place in Eduardo’s Restaurant on Wednesday and Thursday of this week When Elliot spoke to the Leader he was clearly excited that he will be able to introduce his new soul mate to life on the Costa Blanca and the home environment that he is clearly hoping to develop with her.

LIONS INSTALL A "NEW " PRESIDENT The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club installed a " not so new " President this week at their annual celebration dinner, held in the Marabu Lounge on Lemon Tree road near Quesada. The out going President Janette Bennett thanked all the Club members and guests for their huge support during her two year tenure as President. Before handing over the gavel and badge of office Janette had two final tasks to perform. The first was to present a cheque for 500.00 euros to Pauline and Derrick Howarth representing the Vecinos de San Miguel Archangel. This donation was made from part of the funds Janette Bennett raised by the Club at the JB Brass and Barbershop Harmonisers concert held earlier in the year at Teatro Municipal Torrevieja, the remaining funds will be donated when the Theatre releases the box office takings to the Lions Club. The second very pleasurable task for Janette was to present Lions Club Charter member Peter Long with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in recognition of his commitment to the Club and Service to the community of Torrevieja and surrounding areas. Peter has served as a Director of the Club for many years, principally as Club Secretary and more latterly as Treasurer. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the highest accolade available to any Club member and is only awarded in exceptional circumstances. Janettes' final task was to pass on the Gavel and badge of office to the "new" Lion President Iain Bennett. Iain who was previously Lion President
from 2010 -12 , on receipt spoke enthusiastically about his hopes for the future and introduced the new board of Club Directors to the assembled members and guests. Iains' first duty as President was similar to that of
with Pauline and Derrek Howarth the outgoing President, Iain presented Janette with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in recognition not only of her two years as President but also having served as Community Service Director, Treasurer and as Vice President of the Club. At the end of the Celebratory dinner and before the entertainment and dancing ensued, Iain invited Julie the owner of Marabu Lounge and Chef Theresa and all the staff to join them in the restaurant where Iain congratulated them all for the excellent meal and first class service they had provided, and on behalf of all the Lions and guests wished them every success with their new venture in Marabu Lounge. For more information about the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club and how to become a Lion member, go to www.torreviejacostalions.org or drop in to the Lions monthly meeting in Hotel Cabo Cervera, La Mata on the second Thursday of every month at 1930, where you will always be made welcome.

DRAINED FINANCES LEA D TO POOR VEHICLE CONDITIONS ccording to data released by the DGT traffic department conducted by driving association the Observatorio Español de Conductores, the truth of what people get up to behind the wheel reveals some startling statistics. According to the 3,000 drivers who took part in their annual survey, 11% admitted to failing to observe the speed limit on a regular basis, equating to 2.7 million drivers. In addition, over 1.8 million drives, or 7%, admit to using applications on their mobile phones whilst driving. However, on the whole, despite these results, Spanish drivers consider themselves to be largely “prudent” and “alert” to other drivers. Although not directly involving habitual bad practice, what is also worrying is how financial restraints during the recent crisis has led to poor maintenance and repair of vehicles on the road. A staggering 70% of drivers say that they have cut back on spending on vehicle maintenance, repairs, using toll roads and insurance. Within the results of those surveyed, over 45% cut back on tolls, 40% stopped washing their cars, 36% avoided urgent repairs and 19% chose not to renew worn out tyres.

SEPA MEANS SAFE & EFFICIENT PAYMENTS IN SPAIN What is SEPA? The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is making euro payments faster, safer and more efficient within the 34 EU countries. It enables customers to make cashless euro payments to anyone within the EU. What are the ways to pay using SEPA? 1. SEPA credit transfer A single way to transfer funds nationally or anywhere within the EU. 2. SEPA direct debit Now charges can be made directly to an account in one EU country for services provided by a company based in another country. 3. SEPA for cards Customers can conveniently use the same cards they use for national purchases, anywhere in Europe. Merchants will accept all cards, making payment processes easier and more attractive.
In addition, 40% of drivers questioned, around 11 million people, say that they frequently leave their car at home in order to save money, and around 6 million car owners want to upgrade to a newer model, as advised by the DGT on the grounds of safety, but they simply cannot afford to do so, despite government funded subsidies. Of course, if the data is proven to be true, less cars on the road may not only be safer, it leads to less pollution and is better for the environment, which can also be said for the vast majority of drivers who now claim to drive in a more fuel efficient and ecologically minded manor.
SEPA standards required for full introduction IBAN IBAN is the International Bank Account Number that identifies your account anywhere in the world. With a maximum of 34 digits it includes the following in order: 2 digits country code 2 digits check digit 30 digits (max) account identification specific to each country UK IBAN example: GB19 LOYD 3096 1700 7099 43 BIC BIC (Bank Identifier Code) numbers will be phased out for crossborder payments by February 2016. PAYMENT CARDS All payment cards will be migrated from magnetic strip to EMV chip. There is currently no date for completion. Timeline for the SEPA process The process began in 1999 and is now in the final migration phase. February 2014: Credit transfers and direct debits in the EU should be carried out in accordance with the standards mentioned above. A six month transition period is being introduced. February 2016: For niche products with specific characteristics a longer transition phase is made for in some countries. 31 October 2016: EU member states with non-euro currencies must adhere to standards set for credit transfers and direct debits in euros, by this end date. SEPA indicators. Key facts at a glance. SEPA credit transfers as a % of total EU transactions is 93.9%* SEPA direct debit as a % of total transactions is 80.3%* EMV transactions as a % of total transactions is 79.6%** *February 2014-03-21 **June 2013 We hope the info provided in this article is of interest. DIRECT TRAIN LINK WITH TORREVIEJA AND BENIDORM As the data released this week reveals that the AVE high speed train carried 12% more passengers in the first six months of the year compared to last year, the train operator RENFE has also announced “quiet coaches” on all services from the autumn. A coach with dimmed lighting and a ban on noise from such devices as mobile phones and computers was introduced on some services this week, with the 42 passengers arriving on the first one between Madrid and Seville being seen as testament to the desire for peace and quiet on the train. As well as a control on electronic noise, announcements are kept to a minimum, except in an emergency, and children under 14 years of age, and pets, are banned from travelling in the carriage. The president of Renfe, Julio Gómez-Pomar, explained that this service cannot be used by children under 14 because the quiet zone, available at no extra cost, is for those who want to rest, saying that “we cannot fill the silent car with pets or babies, because then it would be anything but quiet”. In the first few days of putting the “quiet coach” on sale, the company sold over 2,500 tickets to those looking to travel in silence. This news also comes immediately after the announcement that the Madrid to the Costa Blanca high speed service will now
have the promised connecting bus to both Torrevieja and Benidorm. This service commences on Monday the 15th of July and connects the coastal cities with the inland station at Villena, where onward travel by train can be made connecting with the bus. It was initially thought that a bus link could be provided between Benidorm and Torrevieja and the closer station of Alicante, but protests from taxi drivers complaining that the buses would cause congestion meant that the local government there blocked the move, although they did agree a shuttle between the train and bus station. The service, operated under the Alsa bus company name, will depart and arrive at the Eras de la Sal bus station in Torrevieja, with tickets available for the entire journey.

WHAT DO THE NEW AIRPOR T SECURITY MEASURES MEAN FOR YOU? Travellers are being advised to power up electronic devices in hand luggage as part of new security measures introduced at UK airports. The move comes as the US stepped up its airport security, although the Department for Transport (DfT) said there was "no change to the UK threat level, which remains at substantial" - the third of five possible threat levels. So what has changed and what will it mean for passengers? What are the new restrictions on charging devices in your hand luggage? Passengers passing through airport security will have to prove their electronic devices are powered up by switching them on. What gadgets are included? As well as mobile phones and laptops, the DfT guidance includes devices such as electrical shavers, hair-straighteners and cameras or any other camera equipment. No complete list has been provided but the general advice applies anything "with a battery", so other items such as handheld games consoles and e-readers could also be checked. What will happen if my device cannot be switched on? The government guidelines say
passengers carrying devices which they cannot switch on "face not being allowed to bring the device onto the aircraft". Passengers would then have to choose between charging the device if possible, leaving it behind (see below) or not getting on their flight. What will happen if I leave an electronic device? Some airlines have outlined ways customers can get their devices back. British Airways said passengers could either keep devices at airports for customers to collect or have them forwarded to another address, at the airline's expense. Virgin Atlantic has said likewise. EasyJet said it was seeking clarification from the government on the new regulations and had not, so far, issued any specific instructions to passengers. Can I charge my device at the airport? To avoid the risk of missing your flight or having your device taken away, make sure it is fully charged and check that the airport you are travelling from has a charging point. If for any reason you have a device with a flat battery, charging points are available near security in most airports - so if you have enough time before your flight you should be able to charge it up.

ORIHUELA MEDICS LAUNCH ONLINE RUNNING MAGAZINE Two colleagues from Orihuela Hospital, have launched an online running and health website which offers wellbeing tips and advice to enthusiastic athletes. Federico Gas Huertas, a pediatric nurse and pediatrician Martín Ferrando, say that they have created the website so that anyone who wants to run can find helpful advice and tips on all matters related to the sport without the need to face the same uncertainties that the pair both had in their early careers. The site can be found at www.berunnermyfriend.com. It has a multitude of tips on how to train and what diet that keen runners should follow The pair explained that the project began to take root on the social network site Twitter wher they accumulated more than 10,000 followers. “That's when we decided to take the step and move the project on by creating an online magazine" said Gas. “We want it to be a useful reference for all those who share our hobby, to answer their questions, advise and motivate anyone who chooses to follow the sport lifestyle." Martin Ferrando said that "running is not only about putting on a pair of trainers, we explain how runners can plan their training, prevent any injuries, and much, much more." “The website is divided into several sections covering training information, news, motivation, music and health. The reasons why people start in the world of 'running' are usually to lose weight, relieve stress, and as a social experience or an act of self-improvement,” Ferrando said.

CLOTHING THREAT TO FUTURE OF BEACH VOLLEYBALL
A vocal fighter in the battle against drugs in sports, so much so she became the head of Spain´s anti-doping agency, Ana Muñoz, the Director General of Sports, presided over another battle this week, one which could change the face of a sporting genre forever. In a meeting on Thursday with Francisco Blázquez, the President of the Spanish Handball Federation, the question as to whether the sports kit worn by ladies participating in the beach based version of the sport was the hot topic of conversation, with the simple question, “is it sexist?” The Spanish federation is obliges to take up the international standards for the clothing, which require the players to ensure that their lower abdomen is exposed, their tummy or midriff for want of a better phrase, whereas the bikini bottoms cannot be longer than 10 centimetres. In contrast, boys are allowed to wear shorts which are “loose and long”. For those who don´t currently abide by the rules, there are sanctions enforceable, which is another element discussed during the conference, to try to remove such a threat to those girls who wish to cover up a little more.
The controversy was sparked by the Spanish Federation receiving a warning that after a tournament last weekend in Cantabria, the result was that 21 of the 22 women´s teams participating wore clothing of an older style which wasn´t skimpy enough, and therefore will not be allowed to play for clubs that do not enforce the rules. In the Basque Country both the PSE-EE and the PNV, along with Emakunde, the Basque Institute for Women, expressed their rejection of the rules of the International Handball Federation.

JETT RETURNS HOME AFTER GROUNDBREAKING OPERATION Rod and Sue Weeding from the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre are pleased to report young rescued gelding Jett has returned home safe and sound from Barcelona, after undergoing groundbreaking surgery to repair his malformed back leg. Jett was rescued severely malnourished from an orange grove with acute deformities in his left hind fetlock. Sue believes Jett likely contracted a virus as a foal, which turned into septic arthritis and caused irregular bone growth. “Most young horses would die from this if not instantly treated but amazingly, he survived,” she says. “Given that throughout his young life he was also severely malnourished, it is a miracle that he made it to two years of age. This is yet another example of the strength these animals have to survive.” While special remedial shoes were made for Jett, x-rays later revealed his bone structure was so poor that only tendons were holding the leg together and there was a strong risk of collapse. So four months ago, Jett was sent to Barcelona’s specialist Equihealth Veterinarian Clinic for arthrodesis surgery, which meant breaking and rebuilding the damaged joint in Jett’s leg then reshaping the bone and adding metal plates along the side and the front secured with screws. “The operation was a complete success,” Sue says. “It’s very groundbreaking, the kind of thing you’d normally only attempt on a really expensive horse. So it’s quite incredible for this little guy, who was
found in an orange grove completely deformed. That made us even more determined to do something and again against all the odds he has survived.” Rod drove up to Barcelona on June 17 to collect Jett, who travelled the eight hours home very well. He is now turned out in a small paddock during the day while an assessment is made about the best paddock and companion for him. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies heavily on its network of charity stores across the Alicante province to help cover the costs of state of the art surgery such as Jett’s, plus the feeding and care of the other 82 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre. Sue and Rod are preparing to open their eighth charity store at Gran Alicant by the end of July and are looking for volunteers to help staff the shop. A van driver is also need one day a week for pick-ups and deliveries. Any donations of good quality furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to help stock the store are also gratefully welcomed. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering. The public is invited to meet the many animals saved from abuse and neglect during Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s Sunday open days from 1pm-4pm. Entrance is free and guided tours begin at 2pm. Tasty food and refreshments are available in the garden café. For Directions please visit www.easyhorsecare.net and click the about us tab then map and directions or call 652 021 980

shot on end 14 when behind in the game. The third rink of Ronnie Cairns, Steve Hibberd, Richard Cooper & Eric Bishop managed a draw 17-17. The Ladies also had 2 winning teams, Lin Watkins, Margaret Smith, Christine Parsons & Dee Land 2715, Sandie Thompson (playing her first Provincial game), June Young, Sandra Heath & Sue Cooper 25-12. The other ladies rink had a bit of a disaster & were 13-0 down before they managed to score. They lost by that same 13 shots. After the match most of the players retired to the Chinese restaurant for an enjoyable lunch. Val Hignett managed to park right outside the door & one of her team kindly told her that it was the closest she had got all day. Val took the joke in good spirit.

JORGE REJOINS NEW LOOK TORRY By Steve Hibberd Fans favourite Jorge has signed from Novelda, after a years absence from his local club. He made his debut in 2007/8 season, having risen from youth football in Torrevieja. As he is being sponsored next season by The Leader, we wish him all the best on his return to his home town club. Two other local lads have re-signed, thus helping meet the 5 home grown players criteria, necessary to qualify for a full council grant. Midfielder Burguillos, and striker Guillem, are 2 very hard working guys who will be an asset to the squad. Also returning from last season is 36 year old Carrasco, top scorer with 9 goals, he also has a work rate that takes some beating! Rafa Gomez missed the 2nd half of last season through a nasty injury, has also returned, hungry to make up for lost time. Utility player Micro weighed in with 4 goals last season, seeming to improve more and more as the campaign
progressed, has been given the chance to continue where he left off. Defender Dani Meseguer is another individual who gives 100% effort, week in week out welcome back Dani. The current Torry Army player of the season, Vicente, has signed up for his 5th season at the club. A brand new name will be a custodian between the sticks next season. Oscar has been transferred from Catalonian div 2b side Olot. Wrapping up a busy week of signings is that of Cristian Sanchez. An attacking midfielder, he makes the short move from near rivals, recently promoted Crevillente. First training session Tuesday evening 15 July. Friendlies kick off 2 August, discounted season tickets at 90 Euros now on sale, match poster ads available (6 left) at 20 Euros, plus a whole host of other advertising options. This IS the year Torry move up! www.clubdeportivotorrevieja.com
BRIGHTON AND PARTICK ON SHOW AT PINATAR FC Pinatar 1 Partick Thistle FC 3 There was a great atmosphere at the Pinatar Arena on Wednesday evening for the first in a hectic schedule of pre season friendly matches where Partick Thistle marked their first pre-season game with a win against recently promoted FC Pinatar. Despite only 4 training sessions since their return from holiday the Scots started the game well, dominating possession during the early stages of the first half. Despite seeing a lot of the ball the visitors were unable to create and on the half hour they fell behind to a scrappy goal scored by striker Coki after he had been fed through by Yago Castro. The Spanish Tercera side could have extended their lead but for some fine keeping by Gallagher in the Thistle goal but as the game wore on the visitors superior quality begin to tell.
After the break the visitors started to link up well and with FC Pinatar having made several changes the cracks soon began to show. It wasn’t long before the chances started to come. First Gary Fraser picked the ball up deep in the opposition half hitting a shot from more than twenty yards low down to the keeper’s right and then one of the young players, Declan McDaid, picked up the ball, beat three Pinatar players before putting the ball past the goalie via a defender’s deflection. McDaid was again on hand to provide Alan Archibald’s side with a two goal cushion when, after a wonderfully weighted ball from Steven Lawless, McDaid slotted home from close range. Brighton & Hove Albion 4 Partick Thistle 0 Meanwhile on Saturday evening Partick met Brighton &HA where the south coast side completed the first game of their pre season mini tour with an impressive win over the Scottish Premiership team. Goals from Gordon Greer and Craig Mackail- Smith , both ironically Scottish internationals , in the first half, put Albion in command , albeit at a pedestrian pace. Development squad players Shamir Fenelon and Charlie Harris , netted for Albion in the second half . Portslade youngster and ex youth team player Jimmy Muitt , was involved with the 1st team for the first time.

Although very warm a good fun day was had by all. See you next week 0930 for 1000hrs, as always JO. Saturday Roll-up is Sponsored by TOTUS & DRAGON Insurance. VCL League 2014. Green Div.Team Mimosa was up against Monte Mar for this finale and posted a good result taking 3 of the 5 disciplines. The final numbers were: Team Mimosa 86 shots, 8 pts ; Monte Mar 75 shots and 4 pts. Blue Div. Team Jasmine played the last match of the season against San Luis and won just 2 disciplines but it was enough to make them the confirmed league winners! The numbers were Shots for 82 Against 99; Points for 4 against 8 but who cares!! Exceptionally well done Team Jasmine. The aces this time were: Sandra Heath ( Ladies Singles) & Sheila Stead & Brian Pocock (Pairs ) The 'Fragrant but Deadly' Team Jasmine will play on Wed 16th July at Bon Alba against Javea in the North vs South shoot out. CBBA Premier 20. Greenlands were up against San Luis this week and won 2 disciplines and drew a third giving us a total of 7 points with 145 shots. Our Master Bowlers were Mary Lockley and Jim Oliver (Pairs), Fred Tilley, Joan Oliver & John Wray (Trips, drawn match) and last but etc. Dave Fryatt, Margaret Dewar, Chris Dewar & Marilyn Fryatt (Fours ). Hurricane League. The Gladiators were away to La Marina Pilots this week and earned a great victory scoring 100 shots to the Pilots 89. The Gladiators also won 5 of the 6 rinks to take 12 points home. What a really cracking team this is. The Glosters to quote Capt. Chris "Great day for the Glosters a stunning 14-0 win with high points score against a very sporting El Rancho side. The game was played in a great spirit and enjoyed by all. Obviously Glosters won all 6 rinks and earned the extra 2 points with 154 shots for to 65 against. Everybody is an ACE.
Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice Well what can we say but a very disappointing week for Vistabella with only one or two high points to help us keep our heads up. Charlie Watkins clearly loves La Siesta as on Saturday while playing for the CBBA Provincial side against La Siesta he recorded his second Hot Shot in a week, well done Charlie. Fred Willshire’s 4 Wood pairs team were finally confirmed as winners of Men’s League 2 despite having a bye for the last game, Mike Regan’s team once again recorded a 3 points to 2 win over Country Bowls thanks to a win from Dane Howard and Stuart Allman to give them a 41 shots to 28 win. On Tuesday our Premier 20 League team took on San Miguel and recorded a 12 points to 6 win thanks to a strong performance at San Miguel where we won all 4 disciplines thanks to Ian Kenyon in singles, Lin and Charlie Watkins in pairs, Jenny Chaplin, Geoff Paylor and Dave Chaplin in the trips and Gail Willshire, Andy Leggatt, Les Barber and Fred Willshire in the rinks, unfortunately at home we only managed to win the rinks thanks to Olwyn Ratcliffe, Sandra and Neil Burrows and Eric Bishop, however the other three disciplines were very tight affairs and this allowed us to take the overall by 144 shots to 105. The wheels however fell off on Wednesday with a poor performance in the VCL where we lost by 10 points to 2 at La Marina, with only our trips team of Lin Watkins, Andy Leggatt and Ian Kenyon able to hold their heads up high as their good win restricted the shots loss to 83 against La Marina’s 88. Things did not improve much on Friday although the Greeners did record a win, we had hoped for something a bit better. The Fairways travelled to San Luis and were trounced on all 6 rinks losing by 14 points to nil and by 126 shots to 78 our worst result of the season. The Greeners entertained Country Bowls and won by 117 shots to 81 and 8 points to 6. Our winners were Ken Savage, Peter Cadwell and Pat Rafferty, Pauline Rafferty, Jeff Neve and Brian Prockter and Sheila and Mike Cox and Sue Mynott. We can only hope next week produces some better news.

ESCRIBA COMMITS TO ELCHE UNTIL 2017 With his previous deal set to expire at the end of next season Elche manager Fran Escriba signed a new 2 year contract with the club on Friday which will keep him at the La Liga outfit until 2017. Escriba arrived at Elche in 2012, and took them to promotion in his first season in charge. Last term, after battling the drop for much of the campaign, Elche finished 16th, just one point clear of the relegation zone. The Spanish press are reporting that Everton are currently in talks with Elche's Colombia international midfielder Carlos Sanchez Elche's Colombia international midfielder Carlos Sanchez . The Toffees appear to be leading the chase to bring in 28-year-old Sanchez, who was a key member of his country's march to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Brazil. Football Espana is reporting that the Merseysiders have triggered a two million euros clause in Sanchez's contract with Elche. Meanwhile Alicante side Hercules have completed the signing of Sergio Mantecón. The Madrid midfield player had formally committed himself to the club for the next two seasons. The official presentation to the media and fans of the former Elche captain took place last Thursday at the Rico Perez where he paraded with his new shirt. Thus, Mantecón has confirmed his second spell at Hercules. The presence of both Dani Ram Barroso and Juan Carlos have been key to the player moving to Hercules as it is understood that he also had an offer from Second Division Club Ponferradina in Spain’s far Northwest.

LIME BAR GOLF SOCIETY, LOS ALTOS
(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Golf in the Community’ While most local golf courses are based on resorts or within urbanisations it could be said that golf has no active part in the ‘community’ within which they are located. I am very pleased to announce that RODA Golf are to break this mould and will hold a week long FIESTA OF GOLF between 4th to 10th August 2014. The centre piece of the golf week will be the charity tournament ‘SOS Daniel Soto’ in aid of the marshal’s son who suffers from a rare condition called ‘Lyme’. During the week there will be short game competitions, long driving competitions and golf coaching clinics for golfers but also there will be paddle, tennis, karaoke, face painting, kid’s party games and a beer and tapas for only €1 between Thursday and Sunday. This week long event is known very much as the fiesta of the resort and was the initiative of the Roda course members bringing together golfers and residents of all nationalities and last year the event was attended by in excess of 3500 people. To promote this event we at the LEADER are offering special discounted green fees for the period of only €42 for a single player & buggy or only €72 for two players & buggy. Even if you don’t wish to play in the main charity tournament, grab the chance of some cheap golf while it exists or why not take family, friends or visitors along to Roda and experience the amazing community feel around the resort. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY - MONTHLY STABLEFORD
This month’s Stableford and the final competition of the season was held on the 4th July at Las Colinas Golf Club. On a glorious day 23 members and 2 guests set forth to face the challenge of the many cavernous bunkers, water hazards, tricky greens and increasingly strong
breezes. Our thanks go to the Las Colinas team for their hospitality and professionalism in making our visit a most enjoyable experience. The results were as follows: Best guest and best par 5 winner was Malcolm Foskett with 28 points overall. Nearest the pins on the par threes were Stan Low, Bill Martin, Debbie Weedon, Marylyn Eckersall and Robin Richards The best front and back nine holes were won by Tony Wilson 16 points and Jan Shorley with 18 points Third place overall went to Gordon Bourne with 31 points on count back. Second place went to Debbie Weedon with 32 points, and the winner was Robin Richards with 32 points again on count back. The presentations were made by our Captain Debbie Weedon, and as always our thanks also go to Chris and the team (now at Mono’s Bar Quesada) for the deliciously spicy sausage casserole and chips. Our next golfing event is our annual challenge match against Clapton’s Golf Society on the 8th August at Alenda, followed this year by an evening hog roast. The society AGM will take place on the 11th July at 17.00 at La Marquesa, and our presentation evening and dinner and dance follows one week later at The Clubhouse Quesada. Any golfers requiring more information on the society can contact the secretary on 966719711.
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY
CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY
We started off the week with a best 2 from 4 with all scores counting on the par 5's. The superb scoring continued with 2 teams tying for top spot with an incredible 101 pts and had to be separated by a count back. Unfortunately for the team of Lindsay Forbes, Nick Campbell, Peter Dunn and Brian Dent their score of 50 on the back nine including 12 from Brian in the last 4 holes was not enough to beat the 51 pts scored on the back nine by the winning team of Geoff Biggerstaff, Ron Percival, Alan Douglas and Bryan Neal which included 16 pts in 5 holes from Geoff with Bryan scoring birdies on holes 11, 12 and 14 for 11 pts. It was our weekly Stableford competition on Wednesday and once again the handicap secretary was busy with excellent scores being returned in magnificent playing conditions. Rod Doel was at it again with a superb 38 pts to win Category 2 and has now reduced his handicap by seven shots in the past few months. Category 1 was won with a tremendous 42 pts by one of our new members Hendrick Oldenziel. The days result was as follows: Cat 1. 1st. Hendrick Oldenziel 42 pts 2nd. Phil Herrington 40 pts 3rd. Bryan Neal 38 pts. Cat 2. 1st Rod Doel 38 pts 2nd. Allen McClusky 35 pts 3rd. Joyce McClusky 34 pts. 2's Club: Ken Meredith, Phil Herrington and Rod Doel. The guest prize was won by Dirk van Vuure. As it is my wife's birthday Friday's result will be included in next weeks report! Mike Chapman
This week we traveled to Vistabella for our weekly stableford competition. We arrived on a warm and relatively still day, although the breeze did get up later on but was never very strong just enough to keep the heat at bay. The course was in its usual very good condition with receptive but tricky slowish greens and as last week the scoring was quite good overall with 5 players getting par or better but this week there was only one 2 on the par threes that was on the 4th and was scored by Tommy Clarke. The rest of the results were: Nearest the pin on holes 4 and 8 was Tommy Clarke Nearest the par 4 16th in 2 was Patricia Creegan Longest Drive on hole 18 was Graham Haywood. Winner with 40 points was Patricia Creegan despite having a new handicap which will be slashed even more this week. Runner up on count back with 37 points was John Winkley just beating Robert Wardrop on a better back 9. Next week we are at La Serena for the Help for Heroes charity day first tee is at 08:40. The start list will be in the bar from Monday 14th.

Recently the golfers of Peraleja raised the magnificent sum of â‚Ź4025 in a sponsored golf tournament. Chris Hardwidge organised the event and, in the Restaurante LA VISTA, now fully owned by "Exclusively Peraleja SL" presented the cheque to the Director General of Caritas in Murcia, Antonio Sanchez Martinez. The local priest, Rev. Fr. Joaquin, and members of Caritas, Sucina were
invited to attend but were unable to do so. Chris said that we have asked for the monies to be used locally in Sucina. This is another much needed donation, thanks to the golfers of Peraleja Golf Resort. PADDY’S POINT GOLF SOCIETY "PUB CHAMPIONSHIP" 38 members and guests headed to Las Colinas for the annual pub championship contest in glorious summer weather, too hot for some but there was a pleasant breeze which stopped us wilting. The course was in a near perfect condition with just a few areas having remedial work on the approaches to the greens. This did not prevent some excellent scoring with everyone competing hard for the prestige of being the pub champion for the next 12 months. Many thanks to Martin, Ana and all of the staff at Las Colinas. The new GPS buggies caught a few players out when they drove in to forbidden areas and the only control they had was reverse! That will teach you!!
Ruby's fun day found us playing at our home course El Plantio, where the greens were in excellent condition but the fairways are being repaired and were a bit sandy. However team vice Nigel Wright, Mick Johnson, Graham Hall and David Trotman were able to manage the conditions and guided their Harlequin ball (double points) around the course for team victory, the only team to bring the ball home. Other winners on the day were nearest the pins on par 3's Nigel Wright, Jim McCarthy and Bill (I have a serious injury) Malcolm. Nearest the
pin in two was Buck Taylor gold division winner was Nigel Wright and silver division lets keep it in the family went to wife Theresa, overall winner on the day was Nigel Wright. Back at Ruby's bar Back at Ruby's bar much banter took place about the serious injury (scratched knee) to Mr Malcolm, before the football card was won by Colin Philips. Our next outing is at Alenda on the 18th July anyone wishing to join us for this or any other game can contact us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk.
La Marina Golf Society
Our meeting on Thursday at Alicante Golf was blessed with moderate temperatures and a cool breeze. Having seen the completion of Ladies Day at Ascot earlier this year, the Society unwittingly hosted its own Ladies Day with the majority of winners coming from our superb lady golfers. The course was in perfect condition although few of the gentlemen's scores reflected this. Nearest the pins on 4 of the 6 par 3's were won by Pete Wootton, Barry Thorogood and two for Elspeth Craig. Elspeth was also the Silver Division winner with 32 points, and I'm told by her losing matchplay opponent, Mike Green, that she was a deserved winner. The winner of the Gold Division with a great score of 36 points was Aileen Beale. As part of her 4-ball it was a privilege to watch such an accomplished golfer. Unfortunately no picture this week as I broke my camera. Our next meeting is at Alenda on 24th July at 09.04 first tee-time. Enter on the board at the Club. Please let Elspeth know as soon as possible your requirements for the Curry Night on 22nd July and the 10th Anniversary Dinner at the La Marina Club on 12th August Her e-mail is elspeth4mcd@yahoo.co.uk Once again many thanks to Helena for feeding us post-match.
NTP hole 5 - Willie Crankle NTP hole 7 - Alan Pounds NTP hole 10 - Martin Gibson NTP hole 14 - Dermot Rooney 2s pot was shared by Dermot Rooney and Alan Pounds. Longest Drive - Myra Coull (again) We keep changing which hole to use for the longest drive but Myra keeps coming up trumps. Myra was presented with a visor to hide her blushes. Best Guest - Dermot Rooney 39 points on c/b 3rd - Paul Healey 37 points, 2nd - John Bryan 39 points 1st and pub champion 2014 - Patsy Long 45 points We said goodbye to one of our regular players Alan Pounds who is moving back to the UK, good luck Alan and we look forward to seeing you again for a game of golf if ever you come back for a visit. Many thanks to Hazel and the bar and kitchen staff at Paddy's Point for their hospitality after the game. Next event is again at Las Colinas on Wednesday 13th August playing for the summer trophy. For all future events your name must be on the list and money paid by the Sunday night prior to the game, see bar staff at Paddy's Point.
