NO NATIONAL POLICE STATION FOR TORREVIEJA
The Secretary of State for Security, Francisco Martínez Vázquez, has stated that the promised building of a National Police station in Torrevieja is “not on the table”, despite both historic and continual promises by the local government team that it would happen. The land for the proposed new facility has already been leased, as this has been a request from the every growing population of the city for
over a decade. In fact, on that basis, the Partido Popular included the project in their election manifesto in 2005. The land has been paid for by the Torrevieja tax payers and donated to the Interior Ministry for the purpose of completing a project, a matter which now seems nothing more than another waste of public funds. The Secretary of State gave his response to questions posed by the press whilst he was attending the official opening of the new foreigner´s registration centre in the town, replacing a smaller antiquated facility near the windmill. The Neighbours Association "San Miguel Archangel" qualifies the eviction of the C.C.O.O., Spain’s largest Trade Union, from its official office in The Social Centre of San Miguel de Salinas last Friday 18th July as a despotic act. The sudden eviction by the decree of Mayor Ángel Sáez Huertas was carried out without mediation or even the knowledge of the Municipal Council on the grounds that the 15 metre square office was required for the municipal library to meet Valencia Government requirements on the minimum space required to obtain important government grants. Previous notice had been given but was subject to appeal and mediation by the union who rightly requested that alterative accommodation be found. The administration, it is alleged, made no moves to mediate and without warning sent Policía Local officers, municipal workers and a locksmith to execute the immediate eviction. The Association considers this to be a gross and pointless excuse given by the Mayor in a town where there is plenty of alternative public office space, even in the same building. Furthermore, the Association supports the rights of the C.C.O.O. Union in their court challenge for the reversal of the agreement it had with the town council to use the office and enjoy trade union assets for the benefit of union members. The site currently occupied by the Social Centre, started as the House of the People's Republic. It was
expropriated by the Franco regime and later delivered to the State Union of the Agrarian Chamber after the civil war ended. The Chamber of Agriculture subsequently returned the property to the City Council in 1990. At the formal Municipal Plenary council meeting on March 16, 1990 it was resolved to assign a local Social Centre office to the UGT and CCOO Unions in the newly opened Community Centre. The Mayor of the time, Don Manuel Lorente Sáez later said, “I am particularly proud of the textual-appointment letter of 1994 where I have announced the transfer of this local office to the unions and that I am somehow able to pay a historic debt to the workers of this country". The Neighbours Association fears a return to the darkest periods in the history of Spain and condemns this rampant ‘warlordism’ - in Spanish ‘caciquismo rampante’ - that currently dominates the town. Privileges and rights are granted depending on political sympathy and not merit, nor capacity, nor service provided to citizens. Local observers, the Association adds, ask whether there is any significance in the day of this sudden eviction. It is 78 years to the day when on July 18, 1936, the unions were expelled from the House of the People of San Miguel de Salinas during some of those darkest times. By David A Hardy, Vice President, Asociación de Vecinos ‘San Miguel Arcángel’ on behalf of the Board of Directors.

Continued From Page 1 With the disappointing truth that Torrevieja may never see a national police station, especially with the official resident figures under question and the threat of losing 15,000 residents from the official figures, the mayor of the city, Eduardo Dólon, played down the comments, focussing rather on the positive news of the offices the dignitaries were attending. However, it wasn´t all bad news, as the Secretary has said that Torrevieja will gain a “virtual” police presence, located in the Vista Alegre, similar to that which is currently operating in Málaga, where it has been on trial, making Torrevieja only the second place in Spain to receive this futuristic element of policing. The vandal-proof unit that offers videoconferencing, supporting audio, video, physical objects and paper, will be operational from August.

Francisco Martínez described the project as “innovative”, explaining how the facilities enable Spanish citizens, tourists and foreign residents to access a comprehensive and permanent system of immediate police assistance, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in a variety of most common used languages, and adapted for use by those with hearing and visual impairment, as well as those with physical disabilities. Meanwhile, the new foreigner´s registration office is officially open, located on calle Arquitecto Larramendi, with 12 staff assigned to the unit. Non-EU foreigners still have to go to Alicante to be dealt with, but for the Europeans, this office is now an improvement on the previous facility in the town, which itself was of great importance as resident applicants had to attend the station in Elche before it was opened.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN Readers may remember the sad passing of George Faulkner recently. Well prior to moving to Spain George was a former member of the Armed Forces. He served in the RASC/RCT.
On his retirement from the Forces George spent many years as the Club Secretary at Padeswood and Buckley Golf Course, nr Mold, so it was fitting that both of these body’s featured when his wife Anne, and family, decided to pay their final respects. The party first attended the RASC /RCT Corps Service of thanksgiving and rededication at the St Michael and St George church on Queens Avenue in Aldershot. The church has long been the Cathedral of the Bishop of the Forces.
Following the service the names of those former members who had passed away in the previous 12 months were unveiled on the commemorative memorial. The group then retired to the Royal Logistic Corps Officer’s Mess in Deepcut where they joined colleagues and friends at the Corps Sunday Lunch. On the previous Wednesday the family had travelled to Mold where they scattered George’s ashes in a small copse on the Padeswood and Buckley Golf Course. The short ceremony was also attended by the Club Captain, Secretary and the Captain from the time of George’s tenure as Club Secretary.

HISTORY OF A BRITISH SHIPWRECK
The Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) is currently holding an exhibition, "Deltebre I. History of a shipwreck" displaying artefacts rescued from a British navy ship which was sunk in the mouth of the Ebro in 1813. And amongst the items exhibited is a 210 year old bottle of Fondillón wine which was produced in the province of Alicante. The exhibition, which was opened last week by the President of the Council of Alicante, Luisa Pastor, will be open until January 11, 2015. In the main it is as a result of a joint effort by the Archaeology Museum-Centre d 'Submerged Archaeology of Catalonia and Girona - MARQ and the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Wines of Alicante. The exhibition provides a comprehensive view of the remains that were recovered from the British wreck displaying about a hundred everyday objects, including the 210 year old bottle of Alicante wine, which, when it was found in 2008 was completely intact and sealed. The President was accompanied by the Deputy Councillor of Culture, Juan Bautista Rosello, the president of the DOP, Antonio Miguel Navarro, and the President of the Banco Sabadell Foundation, which is sponsoring the exhibition. Pastor said that "it is an exceptional exhibition as the
'Deltebre I' is from one of the few archaeological vessels that has suffered no looting, which has allowed us to see a fascinating episode in the history, with objects that are still in very good condition after 200 years. Moreover, there is still a great deal of underwater excavation that remains unfinished, there is still much to discover and as we speak there are teams that are still are working on the wreck." The exhibition also includes a variety of weapons that were being used at that time, mortar bombs, grenades, gunpowder, personal weapons and ammunition of different calibres. There are also many navigational items that have been recovered from the wreck and from the living quarters of the officers, including a sextant, the Captain’s seal, as well as a selection of clothing and footwear. In June 1813, after an unsuccessful expedition to liberate the city of Tarragona from the domain of Napoleonic forces, eighteen ships of a convoy supervised by the Lt. General John Murray, were surprised by strong gales. Five of them ran aground in the Ebro delta on the Catalonia coast. Almost 200 years later, Deltebre I was found by local fishermen, and has been the subject of an archaeological study since 2008 by the Centre for Underwater Archaeology of Catalonia (CASCMAC).

PROMINENT ORIHUELA BUSINESSMAN GIVEN 35 YEARS IN PRISON rihuela businessman Angel Fenoll has been sentenced to thirty five and a half years in prison for crimes against the Treasury and necessary cooperation in a continuing crime of forgery by the courts of Orihuela. Fenoll, who is also implicated in the infamous Brugal case, which is linked to a number of members of Orihuela´s Partido Popular, including former Mayor, Mónica Lorente. A witness testament in a court hearing in 2007 stated that Fenoll played a “decisive part” in the municipal campaign that led to Monica Lorente becoming mayor of Orihuela in 2007. After a delay in the start of the case in March, Fenoll was tried, along with 17 other defendants, for allegedly falsifying 1,330 invoices on behalf of the companies Colsur Sl y Proambiente SL., with the sole intention of avoiding tax. victed Fenoll of 11 offenses against the treasury, imposing an additional penalty of “up to four times the amount defrauded in each of the offenses referred to” as well as the loss of the possibility of obtaining grants or tax incentives or Social Security. The prosecutor had asked for 36 years in prison for the businessman, who had acted “in order to hide the true result of the activity” of those two companies, “for the purpose of defrauding the Treasury” and evading payment of the VAT and corporate tax for the years 2002, 2003 and 2004, by using specific statements to wrongly deduct expenses and fees of VAT “ using fictitious invoices that had been completely made up” in order to document “benefits or services” which had not been made. The total prison sentence handed down was for a combined 177 years between the defendants, one of whom is a former PP councillor of Albatera, Francisco Javier Bru.
The former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo, must enter prison on the 31st of July, to serve his sentence for crimes of forgery and breach of trust in the award in 2004 of the contract for the collection of municipal solid waste in the town. Having duly appeared at the courts in Valencia on Wednesday, where he was allowed to choose the prison he would attend, the court has now issued the date from which his prison term will begin. Despite previous fears over his health, upon entering the courts he himself dismissed those suggestions, answering reporters who asked about his well being with the term “perfectamente”. Upon leaving the courts he evaded questions from the press. The current mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón,
when asked about his opinion in the case considering he was one of the signatories who called for his clemency, he simply remarked that the matter is now “closed”. This crime is separate from another outstanding case whereas Hernández Mateo is accused of purchasing land in 2000 at Almoradí, for a price of 180,000 euro, to be sold just 2 years later for 5.4 million euro, the accusations being that he profiteered from insider knowledge and the ability to adjust the classification of the land to allow residential building, thus increasing the value. Hernández Mateo claimed he had purchased the land in order to exercise his dogs on the plot. It was sold this year by the developer, who had purchased it subsequently, for just 1.1 million euro.
UNIONS CALL OFF SHOE STRIKE
Unions and management reached agreement last week enabling them to call of the 3 day strike by footwear workers. The collective agreement was ratified in Madrid. Details of the settlement were given in a press release issued jointly by the Federation of Footwear Industries (FICE) and the Spanish Association of Footwear Components (AEC). The two parties said that their last meeting held with the two unions, UGT and CCOO, ended in harmony. Both parties say that they have agreed to maintain the wage revision clause in the 2014/15 agreement with the commitment that further negotiations will take place at the beginning of 2016. They said that these must take into account the country’s economic situation. However, despite the agreement to call of the strike the two groups say that they are still a long way apart and that there are still substantial differences between what the employers are offering and what the two unions will accept. As such both parties have agreed to submit their cases to the Arbitration service.

TORREVIEJA TRANSPORT LINKS STILL NO CLEARER The Secretary General of the Partido Popular in Valencia, Isabel Bonig, was asked questions relating to the transport network of Torrevieja during a visit to the city´s Habaneras musical event this week.
However, the senior politician was unable to clearly answer the two questions asked regarding work on the N-332 and the missing high speed train bus link. According to Bonig, any work on assessing the needs of the N-332 coast road as it passes Torrevieja are “delayed” awaiting the validation of an environmental impact study. For many years motorists have suffered huge delays and queues on the only section of the road that wasn´t widened during the recent
expansion, a problem which still occurs today and which has seen many people chose to avoid Torrevieja during the busy season as a result. Similarly, recent calls to provide lane separation on the stretch which has seen a number of fatal crashes this year alone have not yet progressed, apparently awaiting the final improvements form the central government of Madrid. Meanwhile, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, was in consultation on Friday regarding the plans to build a Brico Depot DIY store on land between the N-332 and salt lakes near to the cemetery. There is no question that constructing on the 32,000 square metre plot intended for the project would have an environmental impact as it borders the protected Salinas and wetlands, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, but the success of the store would obviously rely on traffic coming into the area, taking trade away from the likes of Zenia Boulevard, Crevillente, Elche, and Alicante areas where similar stores exist, thus amplifying the problem of the N-332 beyond the current gridlock. The local traders association of Torrevieja, APYMECO, have voiced their objections as the city traders have already lost out to business since the Habaneras centre was built, let alont the loss of trade to Orihuela with the construction of Zenia Boulevard. There had been plans in the past to ease the
problems, with talk of a direct train link to Torrevieja being reinstated, that then changed to an extension of the Alicante tram network, which in turn then became an almost pipedream proposal for automatic buses that read road markings and don´t require drivers, all of which would improve the public transport network, but none of which have become anywhere near to reality. The high speed train from Madrid to Alicante is a reality however, but the connections from Torrevieja and Benidorm are not. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, announced that the direct bus would be available in time to promote during this year´s FITUR tourism event in Madrid during March, a somewhat premature announcement which never materialised. The official announcement did eventually come that the service was to start on the 15th of July, but that service simply failed to start. Announcements during the week remained vague, with such comments informing us that the link would start “soon”, or “by the weekend”, once again not coming to fruition. Faced with the question as to when the service will actually start, Bonig answered the question by explain that there “are some last minute delays”, but the service will start “Within a very short time, the next few weeks”.

MAYOR CAUGHT UP IN PHONE CONTROVERSY Whilst a number of Torrevieja council officials have recently appeared in court facing charges of using their publicly funded mobile phones for personal use, it appears that lessons have not been learnt, as both the current mayor, Eduardo Dólon, and the financial councillor, Joaquín Albaladejo, are also being accused of doing the same thing. Domingo Soler of the Alternativa Popular political group of Torrevieja, APTCe, has said that the pair spent 431 euro of public money in just 3 days, whilst traveling in Europe. Whilst travelling in Germany and Russia, on official business to try to improve relations and encourage tourists to visit the Costa Blanca city, the pair made both telephone calls and had internet connections which were for direct contact with their family. According to records presented by Soler, Albaladejo alone spent 118 euro on personal calls to his family from

Russia, on bills that total over 400 euro. In a press conference, Soler stated that the data has been presented to the lawyers who represent his political group, and who are studying the implications with a view to report the findings to the anti-corruption prosecution for an alleged crime of embezzlement of public funds. The recent court cases have revolved around the fact that the use of a mobile phone provided and paid for by public money cannot be used for personal calls. Eduardo Dolón says that although there may have been some personal calls made, the bulk of the expense was work related and accuses Soler of making the accusations based on ill feeling between the groups.

In fact, spending on dining in hotels is down by 33% compared to last year, despite the increase in patrons.
NEW INSPECTORS Four new Local Police Inspectors were appointed by the Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, in Torrevieja last week. On welcoming them into office Dolon said the new appointments would allow the force to better divide and supervise its resources in the city. He urged the new inspectors to work with greater dedication so that they could improve the image of the local police in Torrevieja.

MOBILE VERSIONS OF SPAIN.INFO AND 'SPAIN IN APPS' PLATFORM LAUNCHED he Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism presented the mobile version of the official website for tourism in Spain and the 'Spain in Apps' platform (an app generator) that are aimed at offering a response to the needs of the digital tourist. The goal is to maintain Spain's leading position in the tourism industry in the future, which means that Spanish tourism needs to be committed to innovation and new technologies. These initiatives are a response to the new habits of travelers and the strong influence of new technologies on transforming the tourism industry. This phenomenon should be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat to the tourism sector. In fact, this industry is one of those to have been most influenced by the emergence of mobile telephones (it is estimated that more than 6.8 billion now exist around the world), making them an essential tool when organising any holiday. This is also creating a unique framework for the development of entrepreneurial activity in tourism and innovative companies. Mobile version of Spain.info The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism is responding to the importance of these new needs from the digital tourist through the creation and the presentation on Thursday of the mobile version of the official website for tourism in Spain, fully aware that a quarter of all visits to this website take place via a mobile device. This new version improves user experience with more practical and simpler browsing, faster access to the information, short messages adapted to the available space and the geolocation of resources. The mobile version is available in four languages (Spanish, English, French and German) with optimised content, images and tools for responding to the needs of travellers. 'Spain in Apps' platform Furthermore, the Ministry of Industry has launched the 'Spain in Apps' technology platform for the development of tourism apps. This platform is closely linked to the Smart Tourism Destinations project, one of the measures forming part of the National Comprehensive Tourism Plan (PNIT) 2012-2015, the cornerstones of which are innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility. A set of apps linked to various tourist destinations, segments, products and services in Spain were presented. Destination guides, apps for beaches, apps for enjoying nature, for travelling with children, for booking and selling experiences, etc. The various features include a number of accessibility tools - present in all the apps - worthy of men-
T
tion, the option to incorporate user-generated content, the design of postcards and the ability to rate the various resources. These apps will soon incorporate a planner, which will enable the creation of a travel book to help users select activities, points of interest and organise customised routes. 'Spain in Apps' has a two-fold objective. From a demand perspective, it provides tourists with up-todate geolocated information about tourist destinations, products and services, the content of which is taken from Spain.info and other sources. From an offer perspective, the platform generates applications that enable data to be gathered anonymously making it possible to gain an understanding of tourist behaviour patterns in Spain. By gathering this data, 'Spain in Apps' will enable destination managers to take decisions based on concrete information, thereby helping to raise efficiency in the management of tourism policies and

LEROY MERLIN DIRECTLY HELPING THE NEEDY
PILAR LOAN BANK ACQUIRES THREE WHEELCHAIRS
The social welfare department of Alicante City Council has signed a collaboration agreement with DIY chain Leroy Merlin, which will directly help young people searching for a job and families who are in need.
The Municipality of Pilar de la Horadada, has recently acquired three new wheelchairs, 2 walkers and an adjustable bed, all of which will be added to the Loan Assistance Bank, a stock of equipment that is available in the town for those people who lack the funds to purchase their own. The equipment was purchased following a donation of 1000 euros from the Department of Social Services. The Bank has so far helped more than 40 families in the town and currently has further equipment including 15 adjustable beds, 10 wheelchairs and a number of walkers, much of which has been donated by local residents. Only those individuals who are either in a temporary or permanent state of dependency and who lack the funds to purchase their own equipment are eligible to borrow items from the bank.
The company will provide materials which will be used in workshops by unemployed people of the city looking to gain key skills and improve their chances of securing a job in the future. As part of the scheme, the company will also take on a number of those who qualify into roles within their stores. Secondly, through the assistance of volunteers, the company will also provide tools and materials in order for repairs to be carried out on the homes of those unable to pay for work due to financial restraints caused by the financial hardships that austerity and mass unemployment has brought. The councillor for social action, Antonio Ardid, and the director of the Leroy Merlin store in Parque Vistahermosa, José María Gil Quinzá, are responsible for making the agreement. The relationship is not new however, it has just been extended to cover these latest elements. The store has already been responsible for donating items to social centres in the area, particularly during Christmas time and fiestas, which they still intend to continue in the future.

LEADER TRAFFIC COPS TO GET STREAMLINED FINES PROCESS ADVERTISING HOTLINE
The Directorate General of Traffic in Spain, the DGT, has submitted a contract to public tender to provide the equipment and software to assist the Guardia Civil traffic department to deal with fines, infractions and complaints faster at the roadside. In particular, as part of the 8.6 million euro contract, the DGT want traffic cops to be able to process more fines and complaints at the site, whilst automatically checking any data needed in processing the claim, using a system called Proceso de Informatización de Denuncias, or Pride for short, in their processing of millions of complaints processed each year. The procurement documents state that the award is for a period of 48 months, with a view to start on the 1st of September this year. The process is the next development in automation since the DGT started to process fines in this manner in 2004. The successful company will have to provide around 6,000 hand-held terminals, software and updates, and maintain or replace around 4,000 printers, as well as back-office and auxiliary devices and support. With the new equipment being put in place, not only will traffic police be able to cope better and process fines more efficiently, they will soon be able to streamline the operation to pass their annual figure, with an average of 5,500 fines per day, 200 per hour on average, targeting those who make the roads a more dangerous place for all.
SUPREME COURT ORDERS REINSTATEMENT OF 165 DOCTORS The Supreme Court has overturned the decision made by the Valencian Department of Health insisting that health workers retire when they reach the age of 65. The ruling says that the Department was wrong in not allowing them to remain active beyond this age. An estimated one thousand professionals have been affected by this regulation which was adopted without prior negotiation with the unions. Those most affected are doctors, as they often ask to extend their activity up to 70 years of age. The decision by the court means that approximately 165 physicians now have to be reinstated into their jobs and any salaries that have been lost as a result of their forcible retirements have to be repaid. Rafael Cantó, President of the CSIF, said that the ruling actually affects about a thousand professionals in the Region of which there are 165 physicians who can return to their jobs, and are now able to continue practicing up to 70 years of age.

LA GOMERA THE ENCHANTED ISLAND As part of my on-going love affair with the Canary Islands for my writing, as well as continually updating ‘The Canary Islander website’, I visit each of the islands regularly. It was recently the turn of La Gomera once again, and although I usually resist naming a favourite island, this must be somewhere at the very top of my list. La Gomera is an enchanting island. As soon as most people step off the plane, they immediately sense that they are in a very different world from the one that they have left behind. This island is in the form of a volcano, with a World Heritage site, and the Garajonay Forest at its heart. It has towns and villages that fascinate with their beauty and simplicity, as well as beaches of dark sand and a coastline dominated by steep and unyielding cliffs. landscape, man has only been able to cultivate a small part of it, as seen by the many steep terraces on the mountainsides. As a consequence, over one third of the island’s total surface area retains its natural and unspoilt beauty with Garajonay National Park and the El Cedro Forest being two outstanding examples of their kind. Many visitors take to the hiking paths and royal roads (caminos reales) in order to get away from the small amount of everyday tourism. If you are fortunate, you can hear examples of the Whistling Language (Silbo), an ancient language that is still used to communicate across the steep ravines that is recognised as culturally significant by UNESCO, and which is the subject of another ‘Letter from the Atlantic’. Wandering in and around the ancient forests quickly became a magical and enchanting experience. I saw insects, birds, plants, trees and shrubs that I have never seen before. It takes time to learn to look, listen, smell and absorb and blend into new surroundings. It was amusing to see, what I refer to as, ‘heavy duty’ walkers charging down the hiking paths, complete with walking poles, at great speed, determined to complete an impressive number of kilometres that they could brag about over dinner later that evening. Needless to say, most of the group were oblivious to the uniqueness of their surroundings. For me, it was important to allow my senses to slowly absorb my new surroundings and to take over from the usual and mundane for a few days, which became intoxicating and totally relaxing. There is something unique about this island and as I sat waiting in a newly built, but deserted, airport waiting for my flight home, I won-
dered for how much longer this island would retain its natural and unique charms set amongst mysterious cliffs, black sand, crystal clear waters and ancient forests. Would this airport soon be alive with dozens of planes arriving from mainland Europe, discharging huge numbers of walking pole carrying passengers, divers and sun seekers? Fingers crossed that they do not stray further across the Atlantic than Tenerife. I will return again very soon. For photos and more information about this special island, take a look at the ‘La Gomera’ pages of The Canary Islander website. Volkswagen Scirocco ready for October By Nick Ireland The new Scirocco, which made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, 40 years after the original, is ready to order. Externally, the Scirocco’s shape has been refined and modernised with new headlights and tail lights, as well as revised bumper styling. The revised front bumper features aerodynamic ‘blades’ in the outer section, like those on the latest-generation Golf GTI, with integrated indicator lights, daytime running lights and fog lights. On models with (optional) bi-xenon headlights, the daytime running lights are LEDs within the main headlights. All Sciroccos now have LED tail lights, while the bumper has been
recuperation systems. The petrol range consists of a 1.4-litre petrol with 125 PS (was 122), and a new 2.0-litre 180 PS unit which replaces the previous 1.4-litre 160 PS unit. Despite an increase in capacity and power, it is more economical than the unit it replaces. The previous 2.0-litre TSI 210 PS has been replaced with a 220 PS unit that is also 19 per cent more fuel efficient. The new Scirocco R uses a 2.0-litre unit producing 280 PS: 15 PS more than before. Two diesel engines are both 2.0-litre units, with either 150 PS or 184 PS, and up to 68.9 mpg. The 1.4-litre TSI comes only with a six-speed manual gearbox, while all other engines come with a standard six-
reshaped to appear lower and more purposeful. As on a Golf, the Volkswagen logo badge now has an additional purpose: functioning as the tailgate release handle. Under the bonnet are six new turbocharged direct-injection petrol and diesel engines, all of which meet EU6 emissions standards and return between 67.3 and 35.3 mpg. All models in the range except the R now feature BlueMotion Technology modifications, meaning they come as standard with Stop/Start and also brake energy
speed manual gearbox with the option of a six-speed DSG gearbox. Four trim levels are available: Scirocco, GT, R-Line and R. The entry level Scirocco comes with an RCD 510 touchscreen infotainment system with DAB digital radio with six-disc CD changer, SD card reader, MDI iPod and USB audio connectors and Bluetooth; air conditioning; automatic headlights and wipers; an auto-dimming rear view mirror; 17-inch ‘Long Beach’ alloy wheels height-adjustable sports seats; and a multifunction leather-covered steering wheel (with paddleshifts on DSG models). The top of the range Scirocco R comes with its own unique exterior styling kit; chrome-look door mirror caps; bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights; 19-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels; R-specific sports seats; 10 mm lower sports suspension; DCC dynamic chassis control; and a colour multifunction trip computer. Order it now for October delivery.

COLUMBIAN FLEES SPAIN TO AVOID JAIL The pressure group ‘Stop Accidentes’ said on Monday that a man who had been sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison for killing a baby in Almoradi, in 2007, following a traffic accident, has fled the country to avoid imprisonment. The incident dates back to August 3, 2007, when the man, who was driving his motorcycle on the CV914 through Almoradi, drove into the pushchair of a 15 month old girl. Although she survived the accident the child died two years later from causes that were attributed to the collision. The judge said that the motorist was influenced by the intake of alcohol which had reduced his mental and physical faculties. He also lacked the mandatory liability Ana Novella insurance and his motorcycle was also being driven without a current ITV (MOT) certificate. The judge also sentenced the girl pushing the child, thought to be a relative, to two years in prison for crossing the road without due care and attention. The ‘Stop Accidentes’ spokeswoman, Ana Novella told the press that the motorcyclist has fled to Colombia about 2 weeks ago. She said that her group is opposed to clemency for the two guilty parties and so they had informed the authorities as it was necessary for the issue of an International warrant to ensure his arrest. Although the trial took place over a year ago the outcome of the appeal has only just been published, said Novella.

Heath Cover in Spain with Spanish-Insurance Tel : 966731691 Are you crossing your fingers and hoping everything will be ok? Do you know what a trip to the local hospital could cost you if you dont have the correct medical cover in Spain ? A trip to emergencies at 359,79€ , get admitted and the bed for 1 night will be costing about 525€€ , add a magnetic body scan costing anything between 179€ and 1075€ and you are running into thousands. This is without talking about costs for surgery or after care appointments. Is it really worth the risk ? Previously non working Brits in Spain who were under the age of 65 were able to pass on their health care costs to the UK Treasury. One of the cost-saving plans by the NHS, means the UK will no longer have to reimburse other European countries for health costs of Brits who are under pensionable age. No doctor should ever turn anyone away in a life threatening situation BUT we are hearing more and more horror stories. Horrendously large medical bills are landing in the post box . Sick people ARE being turned away with non life threatening complaints if they are not able to prove their entitlement for treatment in Spain . Changes in legislation, in both the Spanish and the Uk national heath service will not only effect jobless UK expats. Cut backs by both the Uk and
Spain are hitting working expats and Spanish alike. Not only do we now have tighter rules and controls on the use of the E111 and SIP cards. The cut backs across the board in the Spanish national heath service and ever growing waiting lists are forcing both the working and retired to look for alternative costly private treatments. Don't get caught out. Private heath insurance is not as expensive as you may and putting off the arrangement of your heath care until next month can lead to some very serious false economy! Call Spanish-Insurance today 966731691 for cover tailor made for your needs and pocket !

AN RBL SUMMER IN HONDON
June saw the occasion of a Royal British Legion District summer BBQ, organised by the District Chairman, Nigel Hails. It was held in Hondón de los Frailes and six local Branches attended as well and many friends and guests. 140 people enjoyed a superb spread cooked and served by Tina of Aulsberry’s Catering Service and a local Spanish DJ Antonio, entertained those present. It was a great opportunity for Legion members to meet those from other Branches and swap ideas. Members of the Benidorm and District Branch were there to see Marilyn Rogers, Branch Membership Secretary being presented with the McCrea Shield. The Branch had been awarded this Shield at the Annual Conference in Torquay in May for their increased recruiting of members – this being the second time in three years that they have been recognised in this way. The event raised 400€ for the Poppy Appeal. Nigel said “It was the first event of its kind and we plan to organise another occcasion in the future in another part of the District in order to involve other Branches” Anyone wishing to find out more about Branches in their area, are asked to go to the website: www.britishlegion.org.uk/counties/spainnorth or contact the District Secretary on secretary.rbl.dns@gmail.com For any welfare enquiries, please ring 676 451 780 – between 9am -5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

NO EMERGENCIES Residents of the city of Elche are once again concerned about the availability of emergency ambulances, after medical staff denounced the fact that one of their paramedic SAMU units has been transferred to the coast for the summer season. The move means that there is only one functioning paramedic ambulance to cover the 300,000 residents of Elche.
CHILD CARE RULES
Peggy Wyatt, District Vice Chairman, Marilyn Rogers, Benidorm and District Branch, Nigel Hails, District Chairman and Pamela Dawson Tasker, BEM, Chairman, Benidorm and District Branch.
AN URGENT PLEA FROM HAH The hot weather is here, and so many of our volunteers are having a break either on holiday or at home with their families, but we are still taking more calls for help, which we have had to turn down. We are currently looking after 20 clients, many of these bi-tri weekly and we are UNABLE TO TAKE ON NEW CLIENTS UNTIL WE GET MORE CARERS!! Many charities are also under pressure and need volunteers. We get so many calls from people wanting help, but hardly any from people offering to help. A member of your family may need help, and may have to be turned down for lack of help…this is happening to others, but it could hap-
pen to you! We are only asking for a couple of hours maybe once or twice a week, from either qualified carers, or caring people to help the carer. We visit clients in pairs, and help them THROUGH SHORT TERM DIFFICULT PERIODS. Please think if you could help with a little care of clients or shopping, respite,
company, driving,
translating etc and contact Lesley on 968 134 978, or email helpathomespain@gmail.com. Visit our website helpathome.es
The Spanish government approved new rules on how to deal with unaccompanied immigrant children arriving in the country, establishing a basis to deal with the near 3,000 who have already arrived, mainly from Morocco, Algeria and Romania, as well as those in the future. They will now only be repatriated if it is clear there is somebody in their home country to care for them, and in the event of risk of sexual exploitation, they will be dealt with through the social welfare network via the police.
MORE CRASH INJURIES Four people, including a child and a pregnant woman, were injured in an accident on the N332 near Santa Pola on Monday evening. Firefighters, who had to come from Elche, had to rescue the child, who was trapped in the vehicle. The car had rolled over and was embedded into a wall opposite the hotel Rocas Blancas. The injured were rushed to the General Hospital of Elche.

TWELVE SWIMMERS DIE IN LAST FOUR MONTHS Calls for caution have once again been made to swimmers and bathers as the use of pools and beaches dramatically increases during the summer months. As tourists continue to flock into the area the authorities once again warn of the dangers, particularly to non or to weak swimmers, as well as to parents of young children, who might be especially at risk at this time. In the province of Alicante alone twelve people have lost their lives by drowning in the sea, in reservoirs and in private pools during the period March to July, a figure that is likely to rise during the coming weeks. Indeed, according to data provided by Cicu and the Department of Health, there have been 53 deaths from drowning in the last two years. The President of the State Association of Accident Victims, DIA, Canes Francisco, said recently that the figures are a "true outrage because most of the cases are avoidable, with the majority due to carelessness of the people involved." But in reality, in the absence of accurate statistics on deaths by drowning, the figures may be even greater, said a spokesman from the Red Cross, who emphasized the need to account in detail for the number of deaths and the circumstances of each death, in order to identify the specific reasons so that measures can be taken to avoid such accidents in the future. Some experts point to the possibility that the reduction in life guard hours and days of surveillance on the beaches may have influenced the number of deaths, although bathers own recklessness is undoubtedly the primary cause. The list of tragedy’s began on March 30 when a 50 year old man drowned on the Urbanova beach. Apparently, the victim went for an early morning swim from which he failed to return. His family went down to search the beach. Realizing what had happened, they immediately alerted the emergency services, but, unfortunately, the man was dead when he was eventually pulled out of the sea. A day later, a 3 year old boy died from drowning after falling into a pool in a private house in Javea. The accident occurred on the Cansalades urbanization, where the child and his mother were enjoying a short holiday. When she realized he was missing the mother
found the child floating in the pool. Although she pulled him out, SAMU were unable to revive him. On June 17, a man drowned on La Zenia beach. The incident occurred at about 17:30 pm when the man's body, a foreign retiree, was found floating in the sea. The sea claimed another oriolano three days later. The death occurred on La Glea beach during the mid afternoon. Bathers tried to rescue the man, who decided to go swimming despite a heavy swell. The deceased, aged 44, was pulled onto the sand, but the emergency services could only pronounce him dead. On June 23, a 60-year-old man from Cuenca died in Dénia during the early evening. He was walking along the edge of the sea on la Costa de la Calma. It seems that he drowned after suffering a stroke. El pantano de Beniarrés claimed the life of a man on June 29 when he fell into the sea whilst fishing. The accident occurred at about 15:30 pm when, for unknown reasons, the man fell into the water. A rescue helicopter was mobilized along with members of the Civil Guard and Fire Services but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. On 10 July a 16-year-old Romanian girl died in the pool of a private villa in the rural area of ??Llobella in Benissa. The emergency call was made at around 1400 hours, after family and friends found her body in the pool. SAMU tried to resuscitate the girl but she eventually died. Sunday 13 July was an especially tragic day. In the morning, las lagunas de Rabasa became a deathtrap for a 18 year old boy who had been camping with friends from Alicante. Divers found his body after three hours of searching. It seems that the boy was trying to swim across a large lagoon when he died. The day claimed it’s second victim in Beniarrés, a 49 year old Norwegian national and then on that same day a British scuba diver died while diving in the vicinity of Tabarca. The deceased was a specialist and was able to dive to a depth of 80 meters. The death occurred on a World War II wreck.. The final two deaths were reported last Thursday, when a swimmer aged 42 died in Albufereta and a 78 year old man drowned in la Playa Centro de La Villajoyosa.

EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB Friday 18th July. Not the best day @ the office for our two teams. The Vulcans had a very hard match against league leaders Vista Bella Greeners, both teams won on 3 rinks, but the shot difference went in favour of Vistabella by 96 points to 97, giving them an 8-6 victory. Our winners were: Elwyn Morris, Ed Mc Laghlin & Skip Brian Kavanagh (2111). Yvonne Mallaburn, Sandra Kavanagh & Skip Frank Close (2113). Margaret Riley, George Whall, & Skip Ernie Bennett, (glad to see you back Ernie) (19-15), very well played Vulcans, how close can we get? The Victors had some close games but lost by 4 points to 10. Shots 92-114. Our winners were Chris Ayling, Bob Colston, & Skip Jim Mulloy (Club Captain) (18-14). John Zellor, Reg Fookes, & Skip Mell O'Dell (20-11). Lilly, Renata , & Gina, only lost by 1 shot, bad luck ladies, Promotion again next year ? Sun 20th, our Aussie eve: after a very enjoyable
eve and some great bowls, the winners were, Paul (the hat), Robin Adams & Skip Ernie Bennett, what a great win by only one shot (don’t ask how many teams took part) Last week I thanked all the people who kept the Club running, unfortunately I left out Elwyn Morris, I had to ask exactly what his role was? It turned out that he did all the things that the others did,nt do, no wonder he looked so tired yesterday. Bill Allen the Vulcans Captain will have to miss our last match, due to his Lovely Wife Kath facing an operation, we all wish her a speedy recovery. Bill also wanted to thank his team (the Vulcans) for their keenness & dedication, & not complaining when named as reserves this has meant he enjoyed this year’s captaincy, the team would also like to thank you, Bill. Looking forward to the winter season, Good Luck. Robin(the scribe)Adams.
QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties S.L. The SABA Leagues come to a close this week, with both our teams, the Blenheims and the Lancasters in a good position to win both the Spitfire and Harrier Leagues, each having one game to play. Last week the Social Committee organised a very successful Race Night, which was accompanied by a Hog Roast. The weather was wonderful for the evening and was well supported by our members and their friends.

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB SABA Hurricane League. Team Glosters were far away this week, all the way to Mazzaron. Hunter, Phil ( the voice ) Lockley and Skip Dave Thompson; well done everybody and thanks for your support Team Gladiators were at home for their last match and they took advantage of the home green against their visitors La marina Navigators. VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice A very short report this week, with only the final game of the SABA Summer leagues to report on. The Greeners played their last game last week and had to wait until Friday to see if they would hold on to top spot in the Harrier Division. Unfortunately Quesada Lancasters picked up 10 points and took the title by 2 points pushing the Greeners down to second place. The Fairways in their first season in the Spitfire ‘A’ Division were more concerned to make sure that they would not finish in the bottom 2 places and thanks to a convincing 12 points to 2 victory over

DATE IN SAN ANTON Residents of San Anton have denounced the Orihuela council for negligence in their failure to prune the area’s palm trees. They say that residents are continually being hit by clumps dates that are falling from the palms that in some cases are bearing up to 250 kg of the fruit.
FURTHER STUDY Stand in Orihuela Mayor Antonio Zapata said on Tuesday that the closure of the streets Maestro Torralba and Alhambra in La Zenia will be suspended for a further six months while studies into the safety of the traffic flow along the N332 into and around La Zenia island continue.
MONKEY BUSINESS Benidorm´s Terra Natura animal park has welcomed a new attraction. Having spent the last couple of weeks settling in after their arrival from Zurich Zoo, the two male specimens of loris pygmy sloths (Nycticebus pygmaeus), a native species of Southeast Asia, are now a firm fixture in the facility.
DUCK GROWTH The Jar White shelduck (Tadorna Tadorna) population of La Mata, a bird afforded “special protection” status, has tripled in numbers during this year´s breeding season, according to the latest census by the environment department. Some 400 birds have been responsible for 137 eggs, 39 more than last year. The duck and goose like cross is heavily dependent on irrigation ponds and the food they produce, feeding on small crabs and shrimps, insects such as mosquitoes, tiny fish and other invertebrates.
OIL SPILL A marine wildlife reserve in Gran Canaria, near to the beach of El Cabrón, has suffered an oil spill along a kilometer of its coastline. Although the origin of the slick is still unclear, authorities think that it probably came from a ship that cleaned out its bilge while passing through the area. This is an area known for its diverse marine wildlife and is popular with divers.
TAKE AWAY Two people have been arrested with a further three facing charges in Leon and Cantabria, accused of the illegal theft and slaughter of at least 2,000 horses which were then sold as meat to the overseas market.

A MOST PLEASANT PASTIME FOR EXPATS Due to the popularity of Petanca on the Costa´s , a new league has been formed The International Petanca League. The Aim is to encourage the sport in the community and play friendly enjoyable competitive Petanca The game began in Southern France, Marseilles ,in 1907.There are various stories on how it came about, one tells that a young frenchmen was disabled and could not walk just forlornly looked on while his brother played Boules (players run up and rolls a ball) This bothered the abled body brother and he decided on a variation of the game whereby a player stands still and throws ...petanca was invented ..the word means feet anchored. The game has grown to such an extent that it is played all over the world, and like many other sports there is a world cup and European tournements. In France there are over 17 million players , this compares to 3000 in the U.K.and Soon like here in the Costa´s you will probably hear a cultured accent eating a bacon bougette with a glass of plonk sitting by a Piste in Pontefract, Bolton or Surbiton If you are interested in the game just e-Mail rphornsey@hotmail.com
COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB By StJohn Broadhurst The final game of the season saw the Badgers travel the relatively short journey to Horadada on Friday, 25 July to take on the Hawks in the SABA Harrier league. It was a bit of a disappointing end to the season for the Badgers, managing to win on just two rinks. The lucky winners were: Carole Donnellan, Del Gunning, Karen Kirk 21-11. Andy White, Billy Price, John Palmer 209. Well done Billy Price with a win on his birthday. Overall shots: Badgers 82 (4 pts) Hawks 98 (10 pts). We can all now enjoy the rest of the summer and be ready, willing and able to start the new season in October. And finally a big thank you to Karen Kirk, captain of the Badgers and John Palmer and John Wright who captained the Clarets in the VCL for all your hard work and also to all of the bowlers who turned out each week, especially in the heat of July. Well done to you all. New members are always welcome at Country Bowls, whether you’re a beginner or seasoned bowler, so if you are interested in joining a small and friendly club contact the Club Captain Dennis Birkett on 634418783.
HORADADA BOWLS CLUB By Barry Evans We have now broken up for the summer so this will be the last report for a while. There are two games to report over the last two weeks. In the VCL league we played away at El Rancho, never an easy green to play on.However we came away sharing the points at 6 each in an overall defeat of 69 shots to 86.Our winners were Mens singles Terry Hucknall 21 - 18,Pairs Jim Kerr and Bryan Eatough 18 - 13 and Triples Yvonne Hurlock,Jack Linehan and John Hurlock 19 15.Unfortunately these points did not elevate us from the league bottom. In the SABA league we played at home against Country Bowls and recorded a 98 to 82 shot win and 10 points. Our winning rinks were Zena Trigwell,Roy Thompson and Barry Evans 23 - 11,Peter Davis,John Goddard and Terry Hucknall 17 - 10,Colin Simpson,Wayne Jackson and John Bailey 22 - 7 and Yvonne Hurlock,Bryan Eatough and John Hurlock 16 - 13.This was a good result considering that we included a number of inexperienced members in the team.Only for a run of 3 defeats mid season we could have easily won this league but with our newer members gaining more experience we should have better luck next year. The green will not be manned throughout August but members with their own equipment can still use the green if they so wish.We have arranged friendlies for early September so please make sure your name is down on the availability sheet.Dont forget fees are also due early September.

THE ORANGE TREE GOLF SOCIETY @ SAURINES ON 22ND JULY 2014 This very friendly golf society once again gathered at the Orange Tree restaurant to embark on another society event in the glorious sunshine of southern Spain. After a beautiful breakfast we all headed down to what must be one of the best courses on the coast, Saurines. Just a shame about the facilities in regard to clubhouse etc. Once this is completed then it will be the envy of golf courses in the area. Thanks to all at Saurines for the service. The captain decided on a Pairs better ball competition, which resulted in some excellent scores. The weather was fantastic, if a little warm, but if well covered and plenty of water taken onboard then nothing is better than playing golf with friends in the afternoon sun. We all returned back to home base, The Orange Tree Restaurant and Bar for the presentation and refreshments. Thanks to all at the Orange Tree (Chris, Viv, Nigel, Hannah, Lilly, Brian, Jody and Rhona) for the service and wonderful snacks. The winners this week (shown in the picture) were Kedric Rhodes and Terry (Trevor) Seymour with 44 points, 2nd were Kevin Wenn and Chris Tenneyson with 40, 3rd Simon Sharples and Dave Hughes with 39 and 4th Stuart Robertson and David Eadington with 36 on countback last 6 holes. NTP´s went to Chris Blown on holes 10 and 18. Unfortunately the results of the previous society event were not published, thus the results from that event were: 1st Kedric Rhodes and Dave Eadington, 2nd Martin Lowe and Simon Sharples, 3rd Chris Blown and Nigel Cawthra and 4th Terry Seymour and Fred Noakes. LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY @ ALENDA An early start at Alenda on Thursday but most of us had rubbed the sleep from our eyes by tee-off time. Two no-shows unfortunately, one being Geoff E. who constantly seems to lose his way to Alenda! The other was a result of female dominance when builders gave only half an hour notice of arrival to complete some work, and the little woman allowed her hubby to play. She is obviously more capable of handling the important stuff than the old man. The course, as usual, was in wonderful condition and apparently suited our only Guest,16 year-old Tom Bibby, who in his first round at the course scored an excellent 40 points. Only 3 Nearest the pins were won, by Lynn Young , Graham Marriner and Mick Cook. Winner of the Silver group was Elspeth Craig with 34pts and the Gold Winner was Mick Cook with 37pts. Mick also won the 2's Kitty which had been rolling over for several weeks and generously provided wine for the members out of his winnings. Muchas gracias Mick. Again many thanks to Helena and Paulo for providing the after match victuals. CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY
By David Swann A healthy attendance of 21 people, including 5 guests turned out for El Plantio 2 Golf Society's 'Waltz' competition on Tuesday, 21st July. For the uninitiated, the format entails 7 groups of 3 players counting Stableford scores in 1/2/3 sequence i.e on the 1st hole - 1 score counts - on the 2nd hole - 2 scores count etc. On the 4th hole, it reverts to 1 counting. Nearest the pin hole 5 was guest John Wilby with George Stanhope taking hole 9. Best Visitor with 33 individual points was Mike Kent. In 3rd place with 74 points was Roger Marshall, Mike Williams and Lyn Young. In 2nd, on count back with 77 points, came Kenny Reddington, Bryan Watson and Martin Rickman. The winners, after initially reporting an incorrect score, which would have placed them 2nd, were Frank Stanhope, Rod Loveday and Lawrence Wanty. I think they wanted to finish 2nd and win the Brandy. If you would like to play golf and find playing the big courses too expensive, join our friendly 9 hole society. Ring Ian Henderson on 636116230 for further details.
This week we ventured to a new course for most of us, the Seve designed Alicante course which proved a little awkward to find for some but the course administrators were very helpful and allowed us to tee off a little late. The course is in excellent condition with lush fairways and true receptive greens, the weather was hot and sultry and everybody was grateful that we had buggies to use. The scores were a understandably a little below par for most people being their first view of the course. Results on the day were: Nearest the pin on hole 3 was Wayne Farralley Nearest the pin on hole 12 was Tommy Clarke Nearest the par 5 10th in 3 was Mick Jackson Longest drive on hole was Robert Wardrop Winner with 36 points was John Winkley Runner up with 34 points was Roy Welburn Whilst most people had trouble getting their ball onto the par 3 17th hole Pat Creegan managed a splendid birdie 2. Next week we are returning to Alenda meet at the bar at 08:00.
By Mike Chapman We started the week off with a best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the par 5's. The excellent scoring continued with the winning team of Lindsay Forbes, Bryan Neal, Rod Bryant and 'Albert' reaching 100 pts only one clear of second place team of Rod Doel, Roger Tunstall, Nick Campbell and Norman Page. It was our usual weekly Stableford competition on Wednesday and it was noticeable that the hot weather and holidays were taking a toll on the numbers however there was still sufficient to have two categories. Only one member Ken Robertson managed to beat par this week to win Category One scoring 38 pts but the top score of the day to win the guest prize came from Brian Green with 39 pts despite only scoring 1 pt in the last three holes! The results of the day were as follows: Cat 1 1st. Ken Robertson 38 pts 2nd. Phil Herrington 36 pts (c/b) 3rd. Lindsay Forbes 36 pts Cat 2 1st. Rod Doel 35 pts 2nd. Brian Humpheyson 33 pts (c/b) 3rd. Roger Tunstall 33 pts 2's Club: Ken Robertson (x2), Alan Douglas, Lindsay Forbes On Friday it was a Charity Day organised by Leesons Street bar which is run by one of our members Barry Holtham. The results will be included in next weeks report.

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Golf Course Review Villaitana Introduction - Formerly known as Real de Faula this complex has two courses with the par 72 Levante championship course of 6,388 metres (7,027 yards) from the white tees has excellent views over the Mediterranean sea and Sierra de Finestrat mountains. Featuring rolling fairways, deep bunkers with large and undulating greens to test all standards of golfer and the par 62 Poniente course of only 3,691 metres (4,060 yards) from the white tees being ideal to sharpen those short game skills. Contact Details and Address - Alcalde Eduardo Zaplana Hernandez Soro, 7, Benidorm, Alicante, 03502 .....Telephone: 966 813 013 or email:caddymaster@villaitanagolf.es Web-site: www.villaitana.com Directions - Travelling from either the North or the South via the A7/AP7 motorway or the N332 coast road follow directions for Benidorm and then Terra Mitica and road signs will direct you to the golf courses. Course and Clubhouse Facilities and Services - The clubhouse is excellent with a large open terrace overlooking the courses and with superb sea and mountain views. The pro shop is small but well appointed and the changing and shower rooms are excellent. The practise facilities consist of a very good chipping and putting green and the driving range is located next to the clubhouse and car park. The buggies are fitted with a ‘stopping devise’ which ‘kicks in’ if you get with 10 metres of the green. Prices - Levante Public Low Season Green Fee (18 Holes) = €65*. Poniente Public Low Season Green Fee & Buggy (18 holes) = €49* *Discounted green fees of up to 45% are available from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Course Reviews - The Levante is very much a true golfer’s course which is a genuine par 72 championship layout and the course designer has incorporated water hazards, dog-legs and undulating fairways and greens in his plans which ensure that you do not just ‘grip it and rip it’ but need to plot your way around this course. Typical of ‘Nicklaus’ designed courses the greens are large and undulating but with strategically placed ‘run-off ’areas making the actual ‘landing’ area much smaller than at first appears. The Poniente is a little ‘gem and while only a par 62 made up of par 3 and par 4 holes relatively short on length with numerous birdie opportunities BUT stray off line and you have a card wrecker on your hands. If you are visiting the region and looking for a challenging game of golf then pay this excellent complex a visit.

TMGS MATCH REPORT 23RD JULY 2014 – VILLAMARTIN. On this day in history Bonnie Prince Charlie lands at Eriskay in the Hebrides, Scotland, to lay claim to the British throne. And another player breaks the 40 point barrier with TMGS. The hard work Villamartin are putting into the course is paying off and the course is in very good condition, but how we wish that they would get with the times and have their flags to represent where the hole is on the green for example, the 2nd yesterday, red flag yet the pin was all the way back down that slope. Come on Villamartin, get with it! Score in the mid 30’s were needed to get anywhere near the prizes and a fine 39 pointer from Andy Moore gave him the Best Guest prize In the Silver Division, 30 points saw John Haggart take 4th spot, 31 from Les Wilton gave him 3rd spot. Once again, the “Belfast Bandit”(Ernie Wilson) was in the frame and this week another 34 pointer gave him second slot, a full 5 points behind Colin Marsden who’s 39 haul secured the top slot and a handicap cut. The Gold lads fared a little bit better and it needed 33 points for Dag Lovas to take 4th spot. Steve Higgins claimed 3rd place with 34 points, with Hans Arevesen’s 35 points claimed the runners-up slot. However, best score on the day and a certain cut was Arne Hansson on 41 points. Only 3 of the 4 NTP prizes, kindly donated by Pearl Sabine and Tom Jones, were claimed and the recipients of a very nice bottle of plonk went to Peter Wells, Les Wilton and Paul Fairclough. Photo: Gold category winners Our next game, Wednesday 30th July 2014 see’s us at the delightful track of La Marquessa where we will be having a meal after the game

SMGS's MONTHLY TRIP TO LA FINCA GOLF I think the soaring temperature & our slightly later than usual tee times caused a couple of late cry offs but the hardened golfers with leatherlike skin breezed around the course in their water laden buggies! The famous "Finca Breeze" along with copious amounts of chilled agua helped to keep us in a just about conscious state through the hottest part of the day. However, as is the norm', there were some far more conscious than others....to which some of the scores can testify! The course is in splendid condition which, considering the recent mer-

cury levels, is a big compliment to the team of grounds staff who obviously have everything well and truly under control. On a sad note, it would be remiss of San Miguel Golf Society to not mention the recent passing of Peter Mason. Peter was a popular past member of the society & our condolences go to Jan & family. NTP's were awarded to Theo Boelhouwer (Hole 3), John Aitchison (Hole 6), Jenny Staines (Hole 13) & "Captain Birdseye" - Phil de Lacy (Hole 16). With a commendable total of 36 pts, Anthony Richardson took this week's guest prize. Big Ron Stenhouse & John Aitchison also picked up sleeves of balls for NTP in 3 on 2 of the par 5's. In the bronze category 3rd was Jenny Staines (32), 2nd was the everpresent Chris Hamblett (33) & the best score of the day put recent new member, Karen Simpson, as the worthy winner with a fine 41 points. She may have only recently taken up the game of golf but her swing & style already glaringly dictate a handicap entering the state of "freefall !" Silver's top 3 were El Presidente, Phil Birtwistle in 3rd (35 C/B), Mike Jordan in 2nd (35 C/B) & Phil de Lacy in top spot with an excellent 40 points. 3rd in the Gold division was Capt. Steve Davis (36), 2nd was Brian Staines (37) & a terrific 38 off his slender handicap gave Mick Cook a deserved first place. Well done to all those in the prizes. LO CRISPIN G.S. AT EL PLANTIO
In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services At La Finca on Monday 14th July 2014. For this month’s meeting a group of 28 players visited the established course at La Finca under the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. For 2014 we have joined forces with the Lo Marabu GS who play their monthly ‘social game’ the same days as us so we both benefit from the cost economies of scale for booking a larger group than would otherwise be the case. The weather forecast was ‘spot on’ with clear blue skies and high temperatures with the consumption of much ‘aqua’ being the order of the day and the course was in excellent condition. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Darren Holden – 38 points, 2nd – Dave Bensley – 36 points 3rd – Kevin Robinson – 34 points, 3rd – Alan Demery – 34 points Nearest the pin winners: Par 3 Steven, Par 4 Darren Holden, Par 5 Barbara Hitchings We all returned to the Ship Hispaniola in La Mata for a hearty feed and refreshments prepared by Janet and her team with our thanks. The next fixture is on 11th August 2014 at Alicante. Anyone wishing to join our society should contact Grant Goble on 667329772 or better still call in at the bar. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blanca-greenfees.com.
The Society played at El Plantio on Wednesday with only 26 members and guests braving the heat and boy was it hot, they do say that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun, but we did take a few Scots and a Belgian along as well, so they must be as mad as us. The course was in summer mode, longer grass on the greens and also the fairways to help keep in the moisture, these things proved more difficult to some than others. As usual our fortnightly stableford was enjoyed with lots of smiles even though the scores were lower than usual. Gold Division: 1st Brian Smith 33pts, 2nd David Norton 28pts and 3rd John Dunnion 25pts Silver Division: 1st Dave Lewis 32pts, 2nd Sue Smith 28pts and 3rd Eddy Downing 27pts Bronze Division: 1st Chris Nield 34pts, 2nd Ray Parsons 28pts and 3rd Paul Carter 20pts NTPs: hole 7 was unachievable today, hole 9 Brian Smith, hole 12 in 3 shots was also elusive and hole 16 in 2, John Dunnion. The 2s cache is turning into a pot of gold as this is the second rollover and as our next game is the Summer Cup at Alicante, our 3rd major of the year there will be mucho dinero to play for, and also this will be the third round of the eclectic, so a lot going on. The free game draw was won by Gordon Cobb. For those of you who play the 18 hole games at Vistabella please note that the two games in August will be in the afternoons with the first tee off time being 13.20, so please be there for 12.45.

C.D. TORRY SHOW PROMISE IN OPENING FRIENDLIES By Steve Hibberd At long last, football returned to Vicente Garcia Stadium last Saturday, when Torry hosted div 2b side Elche Ilicitano. Only 24 hours earlier, they had embarked on an opening warm up match, competing against Alcorcon at the very impressive Campoamor resort. Alcorcon hail from the suburbs of Madrid, compete in div 2a, and a couple of seasons ago knocked out the mighty Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey. So it was no surprise when they showed their class, romping to a 5-0 victory, having been 4-0 up at half time. Torry's side consisted of many trialists, with keeper Oscar, and Jorge, the only recognised players in the starting line up. For the 2nd half, Oscar was replaced by Marcos, whilst Alexis, Burguillos and Mati joined Jorge in the action. But back to Saturday's match. Torry's starting XI was predicable, with only Martin missing out through injury: Oscar, Vicente, Adrian, Alexis, Jorge, Burguillos, Cristian, Borja, Carrasco, Rafa Gomez, Sergi. Played in front of a goodly sized crowd, swelled by holiday makers, Torry started the brightest. On 15 mins, Rafa Gomez shot across the face of goal, but Carrasco just failed to put the finishing point blank touch required to open the scoring. Cristian Sanchez put in a great effort from the edge of the box, which went agonizingly the wrong side of the far post, as Torry continued to create chances. Sergi
became the first booking, when he broke up a promising Elche assault on goal, then on the stroke of half time, Rafa Gomez appeared to be upended inside the box, but the Alicante based ref was having none of it!! The 2nd half belonged to Elche, especially their substitute Rubio. He seemed certain to score on 51 mins, but a late flag for offside denied him the chance. Carrasco appeared to head home against the run of play, but once again, an eagle eyed linesman's flag ruled the effort null and void. Rubio was again in the thick of the action on 65 mins, but his well struck shot was well saved by sub keeper Marcos, low down at his near post. Elche started to get a bit over physical, especially on the superb Carrasco, and justly deserved 2 bookings in quick succession. Cesar, another Elche sub, crossed to the far post, only for Rubio to see his goal bound effort deflected for a corner. All in all, a 0-0 draw was a fair result, with both sides gaining many positives from the run out. I was disappointed to see Elche adopt an over physical approach, culminating in 2 Torry players, including Jorge, limping off the pitch. Next Saturday 2 August, ko 8pm, Torry are again at Vicente Garcia Stadium, when they entertain div 2b side FC Cartagena, in another pre season friendly. VAMOS TORRY.
KUHN WINS NATIONAL TITLE
WIN FOR RAYO AT PINATAR
Many congratulations to Torrevieja Tennis Club’s Young German player Nicola Khun who was proclaimed National Champion last week in the Infantil (Under 14) category. The 39th National Championship, the "Manuel Alonso Memorial "Challenge, sponsored by Coca-Cola, was held at the Sporting Club Casino A Coruna. The win now confirms Nicola as one of the best players in the world in his age Group. In the final Kuhn beat another Torry player, Carlos Sánchez Jover, who was forced to retire through injury. Up to that point, Khun had dominated and was leading the tie 6-2, 5-0. dominated the match in their favor 6-2 and 5-0. In the semi final Kuhn beat Nicolás Alvarez Burgos Varona 6-1, 7-while Carlos Sánchez Jover defeated second seed Vedri Alejandro from Valencia, 6-3, 6-4. Nicola and Carlos who are currently training at the academy Equelite Juan Carlos Ferrero, will both be competing in the European Championships which will be held in Russia in August
RAYO VALLECANO 3-1 FC CARTAGENA Rayo Vallecano's beat Cartagena 3-1 on Friday evening at the Pinatar Arena. Paco Jemez put the La Liga outfit ahead early in the game only to be pegged back through an Alberto Bueno strike just before the break. However Rayo dominated the second period with goals from Morcillo and Roberto Trashorras ensuring a comfortable win. The match was played in front of approximately 500 spectators.
ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY AT ALICANTE GOLF - STABLEFORD Summer has come with a vengeance totally different from when we came earlier in the year when the car was warmer than outside, today it was a steady 32 degrees but a breeze helped to keep us cool, shame that some of the Swallows had flown back to cooler climes, as our number were a little depleted. Alicante Golf at San Juan Playa where the Seve designed course is located, was in super condition particularly the fairways, which had mowing lines just like you see on TV, a credit to the greens staff. The greens did fool some of the players which kept the scores down except for one player, Ron Chambers, who matched the course complete with a brand new set of clubs, and his wife was still in the UK (No pressure then!). The scores were relatively low but who can complain with a very good course with lovely blue skies and sunshine. Hey Ho. RESULTS - Gold Category 1st Ron Swift 31 Pts, 2nd Ivie Davies 30 Pts, 3rd Les Yates 29 Pts Silver Category 1st Ron Chambers 36 Pts, 2nd Geoff Wild 32 Pts, 3rd Malcom Woods 26 Pts Nearest Pins: Hole 3: Rod Smith Hole 6: Ginger Tony Hole 8: Les Yates Hole 12: Malcolm Woods Hole 17: Geoff Wild Longest Drive: Rod Smith Best Guest: Ginger Tony The second Semi-Final of the Singles was completed with Les Yates defeating Rocket Ron 3 and 2. He will now go on to play Arfer (Popular One) Williams in the Final. Put your ear plugs in Les!! It was back down the A7/AP7 to Izzy’s Bar for our favourite munchies, and Carolines’s Izzy Chips, all followed by “Rocket” Ron
presenting the prizes, it was a little delayed due to the feast of the Izzy chips and sarnies. Many thanks as always to Tony, Jackie. Next game is the Tuesday 12th August at Vistabella, First tee 09.15 The last game in August has been brought forward to the 18th at Las Colinas, due to them hollow tinning the course. With an early Tee Time of 08:08. The start sheet will be on the web site for you to put you names on.
