COMING TOGETHER TO COMMEMORATE THE GREAT WAR

2014 marks 100 years since the start of the First World War and throughout the centenary (19142018) there will be a programme of commemorative events taking place throughout the world, to honour and remember the lives of those who served in and were affected by the war. Here on the Costa Blanca the most significant event in that programme took place on Sunday when over 100 members of the Royal British

Legion came together with family, friends and members of the general public, in a period of reflection, a short service, which was held in the Orihuela Costa Branch Church, the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras. The service was conducted by the Orihuela Costa Branch President and Chaplain, Pastor Keith Brown, who, following a short prayer, processed into the church the Standards from Mojacar, Benidorm, Albox, the RNA, Royal Marines and RAFA as well as the Union and Spanish flags and the Standard of the local Branch. Guests from the local community included the Orihuela Costa Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer and the Chairman of District (North) Nigel Hails. There followed a number of poignant readings, hymns and even a carol, together with words spoken by members, which had been written during the conflict by an Infantry Captain at Gheluvelt, a Sergeant in the Somerset Light Infantry and by Rifleman WalterYoung of the London Regiment Post Office Rifles. Amongst all these, with hardly a dry eye in the house, there was a moving rendition of the Les Miserables anthem ’Bring him home’ by local opera singer Paul Michael. Musical accompaniment to the hymns was provided by Phillip Mitchell, pianist with the Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir. The Last Post and Reveille were played by Inge Sunde, a former bugler to the Norwegian Royal Household, after which everyone moved into the Garden of Remembrance where Poppy Crosses and Wreaths were laid in memory of the 16 million soldiers and civilians of all nations who lost their lives during the deadliest conflict in human history. On a bright and sunny morning, the opportunity was also taken by many to remember their more recently departed family and friends in the garden and surrounds, which were presented in a spotless condition, testament to the hard work put in by Branch Vice Chairman Eddie Coleman and his team, which had spent the previous days cleaning and painting the whole area. The opportunity was also used to unveil the memorial plaques of 3 former branch members who have died since the branch was first formed six years ago in 2008, Ruby Middleton, Mick Asbury and most recently George Faulkner, donations from whose funeral paid for the printing and production of the

Monday, 4th August, 2014 booklet used during the Service The commemoration was then concluded with a ‘March Past’ from the church to the Olympia Restaurant, which was led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, who, as always, paraded with great dignity and pride as they regularly do at many similar events. Whilst there are no living veterans from the First World War still with us, it’s important that we commemorate the conflict because of the sheer scale of sacrifice which touched every city, town and village and had such a considerable impact on the development of Britain and the world today. And if you feel that you too might want to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by those millions, it’s by no means too late, because this evening, Monday 4 August, on the actual 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of the war, everyone is invited to take part in ‘LightsOut’ by turning off their lights from 10pm to 11pm, leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection. However if you wish to pay your respects with an organized group you might consider going along to La Sahara Bar in CC La Fuente this evening, where the lights will be dimmed, candles lit and letters from the Great War will be read out. And to top it all there will be a free finger buffet for all who attend. The next big event for the Orihuela Costa branch will be the Summer BBQ taking place later this month on 21 July at the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras. Make sure you have a ticket as they are going very quickly (see page 17 for details). The Orihuela Costa Branch of The Royal British Legion meets every 3rd Thursday of the month with a gathering time of 7pm for a 7.30pm start. The venue is the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras, and everyone is welcome, member or not. More information on the branch website at www.orihuelacostarbl.com

NEW SOCIALIST LEADER VOWS TO GET COUNTRY BACK ON TRACK Pedro Sanchez saluting the crowd at the PSOE Congress in Madrid

The new leader of the Socialist Party (PSOE) in Spain, Pedro Sanchez has promised that he will get the country back on its feet. He made the statement in front of a packed house of over 3,000 party delegates, on the final day of the Extraordinary Congress held in Madrid last Sunday. Until just a few months ago Sanchez, a 42 year old economist, was virtually unknown but in the recent leadership contest to replace Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, he polled 49 percent of the votes cast by 130,000 party members putting clear distance between himself and Basque lawmaker Eduardo Madina, who finished second with 36 percent. That primary result was also ratified on Saturday at the same extraordinary congress. During his inaugural speech, Sanchez said he was "exasperated, angry, hurt" after six years of "unprecedented" economic crisis but that he would lead the party back to power and get the crisis-hit country "back on track". He also vowed that he would scrap a labour law reform introduced by the ruling Popular Party that makes it cheaper and easier to fire workers. A tall, married father of two nicknamed "El Guapo" or "The Handsome One", Sanchez has cast himself as a fresh face for the party and would appear to be a credible challenger to the conservative Popular Party (PP) which ousted the Socialists from power

in a crushing November 2011 election defeat. With General elections due next year Sanchez has to overcome criticism of how their last government handled an economic crisis sparked by the collapse of a property boom in 2008 that has left one in four out of work. While Sanchez's election to the leadership of the party by a wide margin was a relief for the Socialists, who had feared a divisive, and potentially confrontational contest, political analysts said it was too soon to tell whether he can reverse the party's fortunes. "Pedro's Sanchez's election is a breath of fresh air for the Socialists. But as of now it is nothing more than that," political analyst Carlos Elordi wrote in an opinion article published recently in a daily newspaper. "Nothing guarantees that it will last. The Socialists' many problems can drown him within weeks," he said. Sanchez has a master's degree in politics and economics from a Belgian university. He served as a top aide to the head of a UN high representative during the war in Kosovo. Last Monday Sanchez met with Mariano Rayoy, at the Moncloa Palace, where the country’s leader expressed the importance and his intention that the pair maintain fluid and on-going dialogue on the various issues of common interest.

PILAR CELEBRATES 28 YEARS OF FRUITFUL INDEPENDENCE The sustained and relentless development that Pilar de la Horadada is currently experiencing is nothing more than a reflection of the enterprising nature of the people who live there, progress and expansion that is still being forged by a succession of historical events. But the growth and improvements that are being achieved in the town are neither because of chance or as a quirk of fate, it is progress that is being forged primarily because of the triumphant fight for independence by this small corner of the Mediterranean, an area that was abandoned for decades as a minor and almost insignificant district of Orihuela. Almost 30 km from the Orihuela seat of government, Pilar de la Horadada was disregarded. It was never considered as an area worthy of investment with the distant councilors paying little regard to its economic and social needs. The locals paid disproportionate taxes and the improvements and maintenance to its infrastructures were kept to a minimum….and where have we heard those grievances before? But after 5 decades of struggle, which first started in 1936, and which included riots, demonstrations, closures of the N332, the bricking up of the municipal office and refusal by the Policia Local to wear the Orihuela badge, the provincial and autonomous authorities finally approved a decree granting Pilar de la Horadada's segregation on 30 July 1986. Every year since then, on the date that was immediately declared as a public holiday, the townsfolk celebrate their creation and their segregation, although at the ceremony held last week at la Casa de Cultura, the current mayor, Jose Fidel Ros, said that it felt like a very long time ago, “But now we have our history, our geographical environment and our very own defined identity, which after 26 fruitful years, gets ever stronger as the days and years go by.” During the event, the mayor paid tribute to the farmers of the town who he said were the cornerstone of the economy of the municipality, with the evolution of Pilar de la Horadada irretrievably linked to it’s agricultural development. Among the attendees, the Vice President of the Council of Alicante, D. César Asencio, welcomed and congratulate the first residents of the municipality, while the Councillor for Culture, Benjamín Fraile, took the opportunity to share with the audience the important work by

Mayor Fidel Ros said that the town will continue to grow by taking "courageous decisions in difficult times", and through the efforts of the government team all pilareños will soon be able to enjoy a reduction in some taxes such as IBI and capital gains. He also pointed out the continued improvement in the education of the children, a new classroom block at the Institute, additional school transport, and additional study rooms while at the same time a continuation of the council’s support local charities “because we are united with the people who are most in need.” The event was also used to present various awards and prizes organized by the Department of Culture. BROKEN PALM DAMAGES SCHOOL PROPERTY

Four palm trees have snapped and fallen over in recent days due to the weight of the weight of the fruit that they bear, the most recent last Thursday afternoon at the Colegio Público Fernando de Loaces causing breakage of the centre’s aircon and heating ducting. Although there were no injuries locals are saying that over a hundred trees have fallen over since late last year and many now present a very real danger to passers by. Already there have been several incidents of palm trees that fall in streets abd around public buildings with one collapsing at the

entrance of the Bernardo Ruiz sports centre destroying a number of fence posts. The Department of Environmental asay they are working as fast as they can to remove palm trees and dates to prevent them falling, however the locals complain that this work is long . They say that it should have been carried out in May and now the palms may suffer damage and attract the red weevil beetle plague. If pruning had occurred when it should have there would not be so much weight and they would not fall down, "they said. Residents complain that there have always beden such incidents with palm trees "but not as many as

there are now" although the Environmental Department say that the current drought is partly to blame, especially those in many privately owned areas that are not irrigated.

Most of the items were simply dumped at the site, apparently by members of the public who have little, or no regard for the environment, although a small amount may well have ended up in the area as a result of being taken there by the rain or wind, "said one of the youngsters. The Channel Acequión and its surroundings are part of the Natural Park of the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja, so it is important that the area it kept clean, and as such all of the waste collected was

ORIHUELA COSTA NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH CRIME WARNING Due to the effectiveness of Local Police Forces, we normally have a very low amount of crime reported in our area, However, during the summer holiday period when we have very large numbers of visitors, as happens throughout the east coast of Spain, others visit with the intent of lining their own pockets by robbing others and spoiling their time here. This has recently been experienced on our beaches where people had their handbags snatched, the thieves making a quick escape in awaiting getaway cars. We want our visitors to enjoy their time here, and they can by only bringing things to the beaches which they will need and leave handbags out of sight where they are staying. When in the water or in our beach bars never leave anything unattended and if travelling to the beach by car, never leave anything on view in the car. Also never leave keys passports or money in the car. If you see anything suspicious please let the Police know immediately by calling 112 where you can speak in Spanish, English, German or Scandinavian. Providing the call is made in good faith the Police welcome all calls. Should you need help the attendants in the beach bars are there to help you. They are able to speak in many languages.

Deputy of the Compromís-Equo group, Joan Baldoví, is demanding answers through parliament as to why Torrevieja will not get a National Police station, despite the plans and promises being made for years, and Torrevieja being allowed to fund the acquisition of land at the taxpayer´s expense. Baldoví says that, “we will raise a parliamentary question to the Ministry of Interior” to give explanations as to what has happened regarding the National Police station construction, explaining that “we must take into account that the municipality of Torrevieja ceded the land for the construction of this building in 2005 and there is a proposal to this effect, but the works are still not to start”.

Given the population and tourist number claims of Torrevieja, the city has insufficient security at the moment; an issue which Compromís believes should be addressed immediately. “Torrevieja is the only city of this size which does not have a National Police presence”, Baldoví concluded. Although the installation of a touch screen video contact with the police has been praised as a technological innovation, the device itself will not be able to respond to the security or safety needs of the citizens any quicker than a telephone call. In fact, given that most people carry a mobile phone, an emergency response is far more likely to occur by telephone, rather than a static information booth.

Car screen visors can be collected from The Leader Newspaper & Exite Radio Office, Los Dolses (upper), at Sunshine Radio Station and also at the Winning Express Office in La Zenia, Avda Villamartin, Urb La Zenia, 03189 Orihuela Costa.

saying there was a total of 14,321 people who visited the exhibition organized by the Municipal Institute of Culture "Joaquin Chapaprieta" together with the Spanish Association of Military Modelling of Torrevieja. Pizana said that in just two years of it’s existence the exhibition has become one of the most popular amongst tourists and residents alike. In this second edition he made mention of the special collaboration of the Military Corps of the Royal Guard, which provided a great many of the exhibits for the exhibition. A total of 80 people worked hard to set the exhibition up, assembling over 500 exhibits, amongst which were vehicles of the ground forces, military aircraft, Spanish navy ships, motorcycles from the National Police, a car similar to those used by the Royal Guard, Radio control tanks, 20 complete uniforms and a very interesting collection of model soldiers.

OPPOSITION GROUPS SPEAK OUT OVER TORREVIEJA MAYOR INCARCERATION

The former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, entered the prison of his choice on Wednesday, one day before the time limit set on his freedom was reached. Hernández Mateo entered the Centro Penitenciario Murcia II, located in Campos del Río, to begin his three year sentence which he was given in November of 2012. He must now serve at least 12 months before an appeal for parole can be considered, although it is likely that he will be freed 6 months after that, having served just half of the sentence, depending on the outcome of other cases against him. Having been found guilty at every level of the judicial appeals process, his last hope lay with the government granting clemency. That hope was dashed when it was refused, thus the courts ruled that he must enter prison before the 31st of July. The prison he chose to serve his time was opened in 2011 and has 1,000 cells. It is one of the closest prisons to Torrevieja, although it was first thought he may have chosen Villena, which is also nearby. Meanwhile, the political opposition groups in Torrevieja believe that the imprisonment of the for-

mer mayor, who was at the head of the municipality for 23 years, reflects the facts that the population are tired of corruption in politics and that justice must be equal, as well as the urgent need for politicians to be clean and act in an exemplary manner. José Hurtado, from the Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja, argued that “justice must be equal for all” and that “society demands righteousness”, whereas politicians must be “exemplary”. Head of the local PSOE socialist group, Ángel Sáez, said that, “the local PP, with its mayor Eduardo Dolón at the head, was mobilized to seek a pardon for Hernández Mateo and resorted even to associations, but only got 2,000 signatures”, which he believes shows that the majority of the population are “tired of corrupt behavior”. Domingo Soler from the alternative APTCe group pointed out that he leads a new generation of politicians calling for a “regeneration” of the PP in Torrevieja, a fact which led to him being expelled and forming his own party. Years later, Soler now believes that he “was right” in his opinions for a need to start afresh with the politics of Torrevieja.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

NUTS TO FLYING! We all have those days when things seem to go wrong, without any reason at all. This was supposed to be a special day. It was the day when I was returning to the island of La Gomera, which is one of my favourite Canary Islands. It was going to be a particularly special break because, not only was it a short holiday, but also my birthday. I was also going to spend some time in one of the World’s most spectacular heritage sites, the Garajonay National Park, which I had wanted to visit for some time. Even though La Gomera is only a short distance away from my home on the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria, it did mean two short flights, courtesy of our local friendly airline. I was dreading the first part of the journey, because the flight into Tenerife to change planes is never a very pleasant experience; turbulence reigns with a vengeance, and is never comfortable in a small propeller type plane. Indeed, Tenerife seems to create more turbulence than most destinations that I have experienced. As it was only a very short flight, there was hardly time for the customary inflight service. However, the all smiling, bountiful hostess leapt forward and suddenly presented me with what I thought was a bag of peanuts and a glass of sparkling water, which I thought was very brave considering how many bottles of sparkling water I have seen squirted over passengers in the past; sparkling drinks and aircraft do not mix. I accepted gratefully, and began to tuck into the peanuts. Those readers who know Spain well will know that the country’s dentists are in league with the manufacturers of a particularly evil treat, that of ‘frutos secos’, which they say is a kind of dried fruit, but in reality comprises mainly of glass, lead and granite, spiced up with a

little volcanic ash. The innocent looking packets do usually contain a few peanuts, which eases one into a false sense of security, and is something that I normally avoid. We had not eaten since having an early breakfast and so I popped what I thought was a peanut into my mouth. Sadly, this was just as we were about to enter ‘Tenerife airspace’. The place rocked and rolled, as it usually does when it hits heavy turbulence. The air hostess smiled benignly at some of her flight virgins, who looked extremely troubled as they were bumped and rocked around in the very small plane. We hit a particularly bad patch of turbulence just as I was enjoying what I thought was a peanut. It was not, and I felt something strange taking place in my mouth. As we bumped along, a little like one of the more significant rides at a theme park, a very large filling popped out of my mouth. My heart sank. This was a particularly evil filling that I have had since my teenage years, so it has done rather well, but is not what I wanted on a Friday evening when staying on a small island in the Atlantic. As soon as we checked into the hotel, I made enquires about the whereabouts of a dental surgery. Needless to say, they were closed until Monday, but the very helpful receptionist did manage to call her friend, Carmen, who happened to be the receptionist of the only dentist on the island who was not on holiday, and made an appointment for my treatment first thing on Monday morning. The following few days were interesting. Those readers who have lost a filling will know how the tongue tends to be drawn and catch on the offending tooth as if it were a magnet, causing damage to both tongue and eventually soreness in the throat. Within a day I could not speak, but eventually hit upon the idea of sticking a piece of chewing gum into the offending cavity. It helped, as did the copious glasses of whisky that my partner plied me with to ease my temper. Sadly, all the alcohol meant that I walked by mistake into a glass door of the hotel lobby and gave myself a black eye, which required a few stitches at the local hospital by a lovely young lady doctor. I hasten to add that I was not drunk, but merely tripped over an elderly, and none too pleased, chihuahua that was sunbathing by the front door. All the attention and kindness that I received almost made it worth the experience, but that is a story for another time. Monday morning arrived. I don't think I have ever been quite so excit-

ed to see a dentist as I was on this occasion. Realising that there was only one dentist available on this small and remote island, meant that I entered the surgery with some trepidation. I was concerned about how modern the equipment would be, and how it would compare with the space age surgery that I am used to at home. I needn't have worried. A brisk and efficient lady dentist appeared clutching a very large metal syringe. It was painless, although I was a little hurt that she seemed to think my experience with my tooth, as well as the black eye was amusing. My new filling was quickly in place, and I gratefully handed over the fee and fled to the nearest bar to recover from the experience. WATERSKIING ATTRACTION FOR TORREVIEJA POR T

A spokesman at the centre said that surgery was successful on the fracture and wounds with the tissue returned to its natural position. ith proper care and the amazing healing capacity of these animals, the turtle is expected to make a full recover. The turtle, weighing 25 kg and numbered 205, was recovered during in Torrevieja the 60th edition of the International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony. As such it was felt that "Habanera" was a suitable name Since it was first established the Oceanographic department of the Valencia University have dealt with over 200 loggerhead turtles which have been recovered on the Valencia coast by Fishermen, Red Cross and Civil Guard, 90% of which have been treated for a variety of disorders and returned to the seas. Torrevieja council have awarded a 3 year waterskiing franchise on the city waterfront to the company Cable Ski Torrevieja, details of which are expected to be released within the next few days. Cable Ski Torrevieja will operate a new nauticalsports centre that will offer experiences based around two activities, skiing and wakeboarding, but both at the end of a 175 mtr cable. They will be located between the Marina Salinas breakwater and the barrage that protects the Torrevieja port. The company says that the activity could be in place by as early as this weekend. The company first requested permission to operate the activity, which they say will complement the existing nautical sports experience in the town, last April, at which time their submission was forwarded to the Capitanía Marítima in the Torrevieja Ayuntamiento.

The Department agreed to an initial concession of three years with the possibility of annual extensions up to a maximum of ten. The facility will cover an area of approximately 5,000 m2 of water bordered by two towers which will be anchored on the sea bottom, both situated parallel to the Marina Salinas jetty. They will also provide a bar and a terrace. Similar activities first emerged in the 90s since when they have been operating successfully in San Rafael (Madrid), Marbella and Benidorm, where they are said to complement the local tourism. However there are some critics of the scheme who say that the introduction of such an activity will severely infringe upon local fishing, bathing and sailing facilities, and will hamper the operation of thousands of pleasure boats, anglers and bathers that operate in and around the port.

RISK OF SUMMER HOSPITAL BED CUT As the Valencia region welcomed another two and a half million vehicle movements over the weekend, during the second major traffic operation of the summer, the 112 emergency coordination centre increased its ability to handle emergencies by 7.7%, in order to “meet as quickly and effectively as possibly, all calls that may occur, since a large number of journeys on our roads was expected due to the output operation and a greater presence of people on our beaches and mountains”, according to coordinator Irene Rodríguez. Nursing unions report a loss of 1,687 beds during summer

However, the ability to deal with those incidents beyond the first response has once again been brought into question, as a syndicate of nursing unions reports that the region´s hospitals have lost 1,687 beds for the summer months, as part of a cost saving exercise. In a statement, the unions explained that the bed closures occur “theoretically” at the lower workload time of year, the summer, but has also pointed out that in previous years some of the beds taken away have never returned, and the coastal zone in particular is busier during the summer than any other time of year. The unions warn that saturation of tourists may mean that the reduction in beds and nursing staff may well lead to delays, backlog and even the possibility of emergency centres having to reopen to accommodate the sick. With closures across the entire region, the province of Valencia has suffered the most cuts, losing 853 beds, whereas in Castellón the figure is 130. In the province of Alicante there are now 704 fewer beds, with the General Hospital of the city most affected, losing 202 beds, whereas Elche loses 64, Elda has lost 68, Torrevieja has lost 61, San Juan has 61 less and in Orihuela, the situation is much worse, with 150 beds being removed.

UNIT FOX TARGETS ALICANTE’S ILLEGAL VENDORS La Unidad Fox is a Police Unit set up in Alicante to target illegal street vendors who deal in the sale of merchandising, be it sunglasses, bags, clothing or DVD’s, that may have been faked. In the last 12 months they have seized and destroyed over 130,000 items. A spokesman said that the eradication of unauthorized hawking, especially of those items that are known to be counterfeit, is one of the main tasks of this specialized police unit in Alicante. In recent years the pressure to end these practices has become a priority, as evidenced by the 134 arrests and prosecutions made during the last year. In addition to the Fox Unit a further 20,000 counterfeit products have been confiscated by officers from the Policia Local.

'UNEXPECTED CHANGE AT THE TOP OF RAFA COSTA BLANCA At the Branch General Meeting held on Tuesday 15th July, the Branch Chairman, Terry Joy, chaired his last meeting due to his unexpected need to return to the UK to live. At the conclusion of the meeting Terry handed over his 'Badge of Office' to his successor, David Barnes. Throughout his 6 odd years as a member of the Branch, Terry was fully involved with branch activities and carried out several important roles. He acted a Branch Standard and National Flag Bearer whenever required and took on the role of Vice Chairman and eventually Chairman in February 2012. During this time, despite suffering a stroke early in 2013, he was soon back and as enthusiastic as before and led the Branch in it's 10th Anniversary celebrations in March and he was already looking forward to the Battle of Britain Commemoration service due in September. There is no doubt he will be sadly missed for his tact and diplomacy in leading the Branch during his time a Chairman and for his very dry sense of humour. To complete the Branch farewell to Terry and his wife Carol, a special

'Farewell Lunch' was held at the Rendezvous Restaurant on Friday 25th July. At the lunch Terry was presented with a specially engraved Tankard to remind him of his time spent with the Costa Blanca Branch of RAFA.'

A GLASS OF WONDERFUL WATER FROM THE TAP

Pouring a glass of cold drinking water from the tap was something that we all took for granted before we moved to Spain. Now buying and lugging huge flagons of water home is part of everyday life. Of course, as the weather gets warmer and the days longer we need to drink more fluids. Experts recommend that we should drink around two litres of water every day – unfortunately coffee, wine and beer do not count as they both have a diuretic effect on the body. Caffeine and alcohol both squeeze water from the cells so that you loose more fluid than you take on board. If you wait until you are thirsty before you reach for a glass of H2O then you are already dehydrated and the damage is done. When the body is dehydrated it often sends out signals that are misread as hunger pangs. Mild dehydration actually slows down the metabolism, so you are actually missing out two-fold if you let your water in-take slip. In addition, a little dehydration can leave you feeling tired as well as affecting your short term memory. The Water Filter Co. offer a friendly, quality service, supplying and installing the best in-line water filter systems available, from our compact dual filter system to our five filter Reverse Osmosis systems. Questions and Answers Why do I need to filter my water? The answer to this question varies depending on which area you live. In some areas it would be very dangerous to drink the tap water, whilst in others the high chlorine content not only makes the water unpleas-

ant to drink but could cause long term health problems.

Why should I choose The Water Filter Co? We offer an unbeatable level of service, we assess individual customer requirements and then provide a tailor made solution, we do not subscribe to the “same system fits all” offered by some companies. How much does water filter system cost? Prices start from 99€ for our dual filter system ranging up to 199€ for a Reverse Osmosis system, including fitting. How much does a filter change cost? Filter changes for our dual system cost 30€ and a standard filter change for a Reverse Osmosis system is 39€ I have a system fitted by another company, can you still change my filters for me? Yes, in many cases we can change your existing filters with the same type, if this is not possible we will upgrade your current system FREE of charge you only pay for the standard filter change i.e. 30€ Other companies charge a lot more, why are you so cheap? We do not consider our prices cheap, they are reasonable. I am sure that many of us have noticed how the prices tend to be inflated for expats. Our price reflects a fair Spanish price, also all our equipment is sourced here in Spain, we have negotiated special rates with our suppliers and have passed these savings to our customers, we do not

pay expensive shipping costs for filters from other countries not designed for use here in Spain. We have known people charged 85€ for a filter change when the filters are available for only 15€ on the internet, we do not consider this fair or reasonable. For those worried about the quality of their water or filter system we offer a free no obligation water test. For further info please contact us. A DVICE FOR THE CARE OF CHILDREN DURING THE HOLIDAYS Doctors from the Torrevieja Hospital have offered advice on caring for children during the summer holidays because they say "babies and young children aoe very sensitive to heat, as an infant’s skin burns more deeply and much quicker than an adult, who is not always attentive to their situation.” They advise using sunscreens with physical filters which should be applied fairly frequently, although they do not recommend their use in children who are under 6 months. Neither do they recommend exposing such children to the summer sun who they say should be protected with long-sleeved shirts or hats. For swimmers who are stung by a jellyfish the experts say "wash the area with salt water to rinse the tentacles off, do not use fresh

water and do not rub the affected area. Remove any remaining tentacles with a gloved hand, stick, shell or tweezers. If you use bare hands to pluck tentacles off, you'll most likely get stung on the fingers. That's also why it's so important to remove them. If you don't the victim will keep getting stung until all the nematocysts (fluid sacs) are used up." For insect bites they recommend that you carefully remove the sting with tweezers and never squeeze or scratch the area because it can be pushed more deeply into the skin. In order to raise awareness about

the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, throughout the year a number of healthcare professionals have recently toured many local schools and centres where they have provide advice on preventive measures against various diseases and ailments.

RAPE ARREST 10 YEARS LATER DNA evidence has convicted a man who raped a US student in Madrid a decade ago. The victim returned to her home in Seattle but was contacted after police took a DNA swab from Cristóbal Cañas Moya following his involvement in a robbery. Moya, was given a 27year although he insisted during his trial that the young woman agreed to have sex with him and a friend.

SWIMMING DEATHS Three people have died in water related incidents in Murcia this week. The first victim was a 79 year old man on the Playa Honda in Cartagena. The second was a 30 year old man from Alcantarilla, who died whilst he was bathing in Salto del Usero. The third victim, a 790 year old woman, was found floating in the sea, at Bocarrambia beach, opposite the Cartagonova camping site.

TURNAROUND IN SPAIN LABOUR MARKET SAYS RAJOY

While speaking at the 2nd International Forum on Public Employment Policies, the PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy said that the structural reforms and the "enormous effort" made by Spanish society as a whole have managed to achieve a cycle change in the labour market and the start of net job creation.

Based on the data from the Labour Force Survey (EPA) for the second quarter of 2014, Rajoy stressed that the Spanish economy has created 402,400 jobs in the last three months - the highest increase in employment in a single quarter since 2005. "You can rest assured that I have been waiting a long time - since I took office as President of the Government, - to be able to give you news such as this that am giving you here today", he said at the official opening of the Forum, which was held in Madrid on 24 and 25

July, and attended by high-ranking officials from almost 50 countries as well as national and international experts. When considering the recent figures, added the President of the Government, the EPA data "confirm that this improvement in the Spanish labour market is not a temporary phenomenon but rather structural in nature, and that the efforts made by the Spanish people as a whole and the reforms by the Government of Spain are producing results". The relationship between economic activity and employment, he said, "is currently the best it has ever been in the history of Spain" given that "net employment has never been created with low levels of economic growth. We have stopped the rot", he said. The President of the Government underlined three major aspects of the growth in employment: the increase in permanent employment by 180,200, the highest in a second quarter of the year since 2007; the increase in private employment, with 393,500 more people in work than in the first quarter of the year; and the growth in full-time employment by 304,400. As regards unemployment, this figure has fallen by 310,400 in the last three months, "an unprecedented reduction in the records kept by the Spanish National Statistics Institute", said Mariano Rajoy. When compared with the same period last year, the number of unemployed has fallen by 424,500. "We have managed to stop the rot: unemployment has gone from an increase of 12.5% when we approved the labour reform to a reduction of 7% in this second quarter of the year", he said. Rajoy believes these "are positive figures" but "with an unemployment rate that is still over 24% of our labour force - over 50% among

31

our young people, there is still a lot more to be done". He argued that this task falls on the public authorities, business leaders, workers and the social stakeholders, whom he encouraged to renew the collective bargaining agreement they approved two years ago and that "has been tremendously useful" in combating unemployment. As regards the Government of Spain, he explained that it will continue working on the labour market reforms - especially in terms of the active employment policies - with such measures as the Annual Employment Plans and the Spanish Activation Strategy 2014-2016, the Employment and Self-Employment Portal - which is already offering 85,000 jobs - and a new regulatory framework for Vocational Training as a means to improve the employability of workers and the competitiveness of companies, which will be available "soon". The Prime Minister believes that "one of the best ways to know a society is to ask oneself what opportunities it offers to its citizens, how it treats those in the worst situation and how it tries to include those who have been excluded". Offering job opportunities to those who seek work will continue to be the priority for the Government of Spain "because the impact of the crisis on unemployment has helped us see, more clearly than ever, that employment is the social policy par excellence, the veritable backbone, of our welfare system", he said. In this regard, Rajoy highlighted the importance of combating youth unemployment, putting an end to duality in the labour market, fostering equality between men and women at work and offering "new incentives to those at risk of being excluded". "A society cannot be truly more prosperous if it is not a fairer society, a country cannot progress if its citizens are not progressing, and this magnificent future project that is Spain will only succeed if it is one on which we all work together, pulling in the same direction", he concluded.

CONSTRUCTION RECOVERY CONTINU ES IN ALICANTE Albeit a rather tentative start, there is no doubt that the recovery in the Costa Blanca construction industry is beginning to take off. This can be seen in virtually every statistical indicator including the improved social security figures recorded in the province in recent months. In the first half of the year, there are 468 more employed persons (many of them self employed, in all subsectors of the construction). Alicante is now showing itself to be the most active province within the autonomous regime. The Social Security Department say that they are experiencing increased contributions from Alicante construction workers, well above those shown in Valencia (130) and Castellón (2), where an increase of 468 contributors have been recorded in the first half of the year contrasted to the 568 contributors that were lost on the Costa Blanca during the first six months of 2013 The improvement was also confirmed last Wednesday by the Association of Professional Workers and Entrepreneurs of the Autonomous Region of Valencia (UATAE) who say that with 34,792 members their figures for Alicante show an increase of 601 personnel in construction. What is also evident in the province is the number of seemingly derelict and abandoned building sites that are once again being worked on as scaffolding and safety netting is once again going up all along the coast. According to information released by the Association of Surveyors (Coaata), the demand on employees from this professional group has now also returned to levels seen before the economic crisis. With 809 sites showing activity with reforms, restoration and maintenance of homes and buildings of all kinds up to 31 May, the figure is almost back to the 2008 levels when 817 sites were being worked at. The industry seems to be waking up in the province, as shown by the

official records published by the These properties in Villamartin Association of Surveyors. In the on the Orihuela Costa are selling first quarter they have granted perfaster than they can be built. mission for 600 new homes, a figure that may rise to around 1500 by the end of the year. These are numbers still well short of the 55,000 homes that were built in the Costa Blanca in the boom of 2004 and 2005, but they represent a clear change of pace. A similar pace was also recorded by the ratings agency Standard & Poors in a new report released on Tuesday which predicts that house prices in Spain will climb by at least 2 percent in 2016. S&P believe that while properties in Spain have fallen by around 30 percent since the country's economic crisis hit in 2008, the recovery is coming. The positive outlook stems from "the faster than expected" recovery of the Spanish economy and a subsequent quicker "fall in unemploy"British funds in particular are taking advantage of the offers in the ment" rates, the agency says. "We have seen a change in trends in the Spanish property market in Spanish property market, and they are here to stay," he added, “with the last 12 months with the arrival of British and US property funds," real estate near the coast and in the bigger cities rebounding much faster than elsewhere.” said Madrid-based real estate expert Eduardo Molet.

LAS COLINAS WELCOMES SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY It's always a pleasure to play at the venue that has recently been awarded the accolade "Best golf resort in Europe" and I would urge anyone who hasn't yet visited Las Colinas to do so, it's a first class facility in a beautiful setting. Thirty odd members & guests teed off from tee 1 & tee 10 in a twoball better-ball competition which always makes for a less spread out finish. It also usually means that the groups who were first back into the clubhouse manage to stay more or less sober for the prize-giving! The course is in great shape & it's that time of the year when the wonderful odour from the curry plants on the 15th waft over that section of the back nine. In the same part of the course teeing off on the 16th from the back tee-box into a bit of a breeze caught one or two out when they were a little over optimistic taking on the corner of the lake. The five NTP's went to Tony Smale (5 & 14), Aled Owen (7), Robin Eastman (10) & Alan MacDonald (17). "Best front 9 not in the prizes" went to Ron Stenhouse & Mick Roscoe with 21 points & "Best back 9 not in the prizes" was claimed by Tony Smale & Matt Newman with 22. The 4 winning 2-balls in the main competition were -4th was father & son team Theo & Joost Boelhouwer with 41 pts; 3rd was man & wife pairing, Phil & Marg Birtwistle, with 42 pts; 2nd was Mike Jordan & Robin Eastman who were just edged out on C/B with their 43 by the worthy winners, Norman McBride & Keith Stevenson, also with 43 points. Congratulations to all those in the prizes! You can keep right up to date with all society news by regularly logging into www.smgs.org or simply give Phil a buzz on 966 774 197 to learn anything about future Wed meetings at which guests are always welcome. Country Bowls Club, Valle del Sol A little patch of Britain Tucked away under the beautiful backdrop of the Murcian mountains in a lovely valley called Valle del Sol, Valley of the Sun, you will find a little green patch of Britain called Country Bowls Club. Whilst bowlers enjoyed a roll up on the 8 rinks behind us, I quietly chatted to Den Birkett the Club's new Captain about the recent developments of the Club. “Things changed quite dramatically for us in March this year”, he said. “ It was at the AGM when 12 of our members which included most of the committee and most of our A team players decided to up and leave.” “ It's the sort of thing that most clubs experience at some time, the only difference with us was that we are such a small club.” He looked across at the bowlers on the green and said, “ we were lucky, it could have gone one of two ways, we could have withered and died as a result or, like a rose bush when it's pruned we could grow stronger and sprout new shoots then blossom!” “I'm pleased to say that is exactly what has happened and is still happening.” “ Of course a Club is the members, so when I talk about the development of the Club it's the members that have made the difference. As one they rose to the challenge and the change in each and everyone of them is astounding! Losing our terrific Club was not an option. We would all do whatever it took to rise and succeed. We're even thinking of naming our main team in the winter league Phoenix!!” He said with a grin. “Our owners were also a great help. They immediately offered to fund the things we needed to improve our facilities and brighten up the place, we needed leaflets printed, new equipment, paint and materials, open days etc . and they gave us their full support.” “For the summer months we went down a couple of divisions in order to consolidate and give our less able players a chance to get some regular competitive bowling. The results have been terrific, their standard of bowling has improved exponentially as a result of playing 3 times a week and some are now entering tournaments that they would never have even considered doing before March!!” We have also had tremendous help and support from the people in the SABA administration and the CBBA, together with some of the Spanish National squad offering to coach us!” “All our members now feel that they are part of the Club and the Club is theirs, so their level of commitment is sky high. We have introduced a 'Fair Bowling Policy' where all members are treated equally and all have an equal opportunity to play competitive bowls in a team on a regular basis. It works!! It works particularly well with a small club such as ours because every member is almost sure to be playing at least twice a week even if they lose in one or two of the different matches we have every week. We have new members joining now and more coming in August and September and we

also have a number of old members who left a couple of years ago now coming back.” “The Club is growing from strength to strength, We now have enough capable bowlers to field a 1st division team again in the winter together with a 2nd division team on another day of the week and a third team of Federated members which will be playing top league bowls.” “What we are proving is that given the opportunity keen bowlers can improve dramatically and you'll have to look far and wide to find a better fighting spirit than our players have here!” “One of our relatively new bowlers reached the last eight in the ladies singles National Championships last month and she is also currently about to play in the singles quarter finals of the SABA knockout Championships and for a club of our size that is a great achievement!” “We are knocking on the door of reaching the finals stages of tournaments that our members are now entering and it wont be long before we will have some winners.” Den offered to show me around their lovely restaurant and we moved inside and sat at the bar having a cool drink. “This is the other major change” he said, “there was always a bit of the 'them and us' syndrome in the past between the restaurant and the bowls club, I could never see how either could work without the full support of the other, so one of the first things that the new committee decided to do was to sit down with Linda who owns the lease for the restaurant and agree a way forward as one unit. Now we work together, as one unit. Our new website promotes the restaurant and the restaurant promotes the bowling club. Just the way it should be. Linda lays on fantastic meals and some at special prices for the bowlers, we help each other and as a result the bowlers eat here more and more and in return Linda and her staff help us more and more. We have co-ordinated our Social evenings to coincide with Entertainment nights that Linda promotes. Harmony at last!” “We have great plans for the Club and we know that we will go on to be a major force to be reckoned with in the bowling fraternity. We want to attract more experienced bowlers from other clubs who perhaps want a change and are looking for more competitive bowling on a regular basis each week, that is certainly something we are in a position to offer them, and we also want to offer the new bowlers or those who haven't yet started bowling the opportunity to come and have a go and see just how being part of a small friendly Club like ours can actually be a life-changing experience. It certainly changed mine and for the better!!” If any of our readers would like to know more about bowling or dining at Country Bowls give Den Birkett or their President Alan Roscoe a call. Den is on 634 41 87 83 and Alan on 659 77 46 56. For more information on the club their website can be found on: www.countrybowlsclub.com

EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB. Well the summer season is now over, the last two matches did not go as we had hoped, the Victors lost to Vistabella by 2 points to 12, but Chris Ayling, Glendale O'Dell & skip Jim Mulloy (Club Captain) had a fine 21-16, win so it was'nt all bad news, next year we could be Champions !! The Vulcans lost to Quasada by 4 points to 10, a lot of the games were close but not close enough, our two good wins were, Sheila Adams, Bernie Evans, & Skip John Evans (24-14) and Yvonne Mallaburn, Sandra Kavanagh & Skip, Frank Close (16-12) We finished mid table but will do much better next year!! At least the Dukes won their division in the

Valencian League, so perhaps not such a bad year after all. We had our weekly Aussie pairs comp on mon, one of the pairs ( Mel O'Dell & Frank Close) had a "hot shot" ( 8 points on one end) & still only finished second? The winners were Sheila Wickens & Reg Fooks, Money goes to Money, next week all drinks are on these winners? We should also thank our two Bar men Dave & Liam for the very much needed refreshments over the past season. Can't wait for the winter season to start, good luck to one and all. Burnett will be back on the beat with a gold medal after defeating Canada's Ryan Bester 21-9 to win the men's singles. But the world indoor champion is hoping for some more time off first. Burnett, 38, said: "The whole of the police have been behind me 100 per cent, it's been great.

"I'm due to go back to work next week some time. "My immediate boss said I might get an extra day off if I won the gold, so I'll hold him to that." Burnett's victory came after Alex Marshall, Paul Foster, David Peacock and Neil Spiers' bagged a 16-8 fours final win over England. The Scots had won a Commonwealth gold for eight years until Marshall and Foster won the pairs event on Monday. Theior secong gold came when David Peacock, Neil Speirs, Paul Foster and skip Alex Marshall beat English opponents 16-8 to secure the fours title in style. HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN

The affable Simon Williams, Hub´s Sports Bar proprietor, once again performed the annual ritual of Captains drive in for the popular Sports Bar, this time at the excellent Al Gorfa layout of La Finca. A healthy turn-out competed for a team event, individual and 6 nearest the pins. As the picture shows Williams was in fine fettle as he prepared to take his ¨drive in¨. A 181 yard drive, probably his best of the year, resulted in a win for Dave Lethaby and Trevor Scammell who predicted distances of 180 yards and 182 yards respectively in the Captains sweep. Their prize, fine dining for two with wine compliments of the ever popular Square Restaurant at Villamartin Plaza. The ever expanding photographic company, ¨The Photo Lounge¨ supplied some very tasty wine from Lee Holtham´s personal cellar for the various NTPs. The main event of the day was keenly contested, resulting in some very healthy stableford scores. Logistics expert Dave Akroyd came in with 35 pts, but that was only good enough for third place. He nevertheless made up for this disappointment by winning three fine bottles of wine courtesy of the Photo Lounge, taking the nearest the pin in 2 on the 330 yard 8th. His approach shot was to 3 feet. Rob Wheeler amassed 22 pts on the front line including 5 pars. His back 9 was also impressive, managing 17 pts for a 39 pt total and second place. First place

went to stalwart John Stevenson who was quickly out of the trap, scoring a very respectable front 9 of 17 pts. That was totally eclipsed by the back 9 where he really went to town with 23 pts for a 40 pt winning total. Unfortunately a performance like Stevensons has consequences and sadly (for him) his two extra shots enjoyed on stroke index 1 and 2 before his round commenced have now been removed. Everyone returned to the Hub Villamartin for refreshments courtesy of the captain and the presentation of prizes. Simon Williams made the presentation himself enjoying a recent run of good form rewarded by fifth place in the individuals and second place in the team event. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY AT RODA Last Wednesday the society travelled south to play Roda, a golf course suited to all abilities. The course was in very good condition, the strong Spanish summer sun was out and there was nothing more than a slight breeze, so good scores were anticipated. There was a good turn-out and the competition was an individual Stableford with 2 divisions. All the prizes were kindly sponsored by Trevor and Ann Hobbs. The winner of the gold division was 11 handicapper Terry Rogers with a very good score of 35 points. In Second place “canny” Scotsman, and member of the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, Charlie Wallace beat his drum well today or more to the point hit the ball cleanly and came in with 31 points. In third place with 30 points was Stormin Norman Lewis. In the Silver division the winner was the very consistent Terry “Evening All” Smith with 29 points. In second place was “Smokin” Tony Patterson with 25 points followed by the “evergreen” Trevor Hobbs with 23 points. The best guest was 2 handicapper Richard Giles with a magnificent score of 41 points and a Gross score of 70. It could have been in the 60’s but for some bad luck and he was suffering with a bit of a hangover on the day. The Roy for the most shots played went to our secretary Pam Martin. It was just a bad day at the office Pam. There were 2 games in the annual knock-out competition. Roy Westlake

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY - REPORT FOR W/E 2 AUG 14 Firstly the result of last Friday's Leeson's Street Charity Stableford competition was a win for Tom Hardie who scored an excellent 41 pts to take the trophy by 1 pt. The picture shows Tom receiving the trophy from organiser Barry Holtham at the presentation ceremony held at Leeson's Street Bar Rioja Centre after the competition where Barry had arranged a Hog Roast and entertainment for all to enjoy. A big thank you to Barry and other sponsors particularly Mick the Grip and Nick Campbell for a great day. Full details of the winners are as follows: 1st Tom Hardie 41 pts 2nd Phil Herrington 40 pts (c/b) 3rd Rod Bryant 40 pts 4th Lindsay Forbes 38 pts (c/b) 5th Norman Page 38 pts, Nearest Pin 14th: Jannicke Lillelien. Best on Par 3's: Rod Doel 10 pts, Best on Par 5's: Rod Bryant 11 pts, Best Guest: Paul Hardie 35 pts Highest Lady Score: Donna Campbell 37 pts On Monday we played a Change Partners which was won with an excellent score of 93 pts by the team of Phil Herrington, Nick Campbell, Brian Humpheyson and Roger Tunstall. There were only 18 players on Wednesday for our weekly Stableford competition so there was just one category with prizes for the top 4 positions. Although Alan Douglas was not in the top 4 he was the only player to score a 2 so he was the lucky recipient of the 2's Club money.

37

Those in the prizes were: 1st. Bryan Neal 39 pts 2nd. Dave Pulling 36 pts 3rd. Mike Frankish 35 pts (c/b) 4th. Mick Brentnall 35 pts On Friday there were only 14 players who contested a 4 ball Texas Scramble which was won with a score of 60.9 by the team of Geoff Biggerstaff, Rod Doel, Peter Dunn and guest Brian Green. Mike Chapman

just beat Paul Flanaghan. I don’t know if it was part of his strategy to psyche Paul out early in the round but Roy drove their buggy, with Paul sat alongside him, over a large cactus and flattened it but fortunately there was no damage to the buggy or either player. In the second match close friends John King and Tony Patterson did battle with John coming out a comfortable winner. The nearest the Pins were won by Nottingham born “merry men” John King and David Westerman. The presentations were made in the Club-House at Roda after the golfers had enjoyed a superb selection of tapas washed down with beer, wine or spirits whatever your tipple. It was “young” Ann Hobbs birthday the following day and she was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a birthday cake. Not sure how many candles the cake had on it but it wasn’t too many and she blew them all out in one go! The food and drink was paid for by our kind sponsors of the day Trevor and Ann and those who played on the day were appreciative of their wonderful generosity. The next game is at the challenging Las Ramblas on Wednesday 13 August and will be a Texas Scramble. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

Lo Marabu Golf Society In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services At Roda on 31st July 2014. For this month’s meeting a group of 16 players visited the established course at Roda taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Our numbers for this month were depleted by members returning to the UK or those with visitors from the UK and they missed a course that was in excellent condition and with very good greens BUT the weather was blisteringly hot and this impacted on the scores of the hot and bothered golfers. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Winston Blackwood - 32 points 2nd – Jack Fanning – 31 points, 3rd – Mike Probert – 31 points Best Front/ Back 9 holes – Julie Blinston and John Chatham Nearest the Pins – Mike Probert (2) and John Chatham Dog of a Day Trophy – Paul Greenwood After the game we returned to the Lo Marabu, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their continued support. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘The True Cost of No entertainment on the Costa Blanca’ The golfing ‘tourist’ will spend on average 3 times more than the beach tourist during their visit to Spain and all they are looking for is good weather, affordable golf, decent accommodation and night time entertainment. Unfortunately we now have a ‘virus’ sweeping across the Costa Blanca in the form of the local police who are intent on stopping night time entertainment. The ‘Madridiots’ swoop on us in the summer with their ‘yapping’ dogs and late night rowdy family parties keeping everyone awake until the early hours BUT god forbid we should have an entertainer in a local bar with a microphone, laptop and two speakers the size of a small suitcase because they call the local police who because they are operating a work to rule to defy the politicians are all too willing to close the bars down and issue fines of up to €3000.Most of the bars wish to operate within the rules ,which are almost non-existent and which can be interpreted differently by any policeman in a bad mood. These bars are trying to ‘eek’ out a living in the summer months to see them through the quiet winter months. Many of my golfing clients are now openly stating that they will not return to the Costa Blanca to play golf due to this unfair entertainment restriction on their well earned golfing holiday by the police and local authorities and will go to other golfing destination like Turkey and Morocco next year. I am not politically motivated and not too strong on mathematics but here is a calculation which is easy to follow and understand: No Music = No Clients = No Bars = No Taxes = No need for policeman This ‘idiotic’ approach to music and entertainment will not only stop at closed bars but will impact all areas of tourism when the Spanish economy is still on it’s’ knees and with 25% unemployment. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. TMGS MATCH REPORT 30TH JULY 2014 – VILLAMARTIN. On this very pleasant day in history in 1979 Graeme McDowell is born in Portrush. In 2010 he became the first Northern Irishman to win the US Open, and the first British golfer since Tony Jacklin in 1970, with a one shot victory at Pebble Beach. Today was our 2nd Anniversary and I don’t think we could have found a better course with better facilities and a meal to die for, all for 50€. La Marquesa has, over the last year or so, made vast improvements and not just only to their course which now is in tip top nick. Yes the greens are a little on the slow side, but they always are this time of the year. 32 of us sat down after the competition to a 3 course meal, which included a half bottle of wine for a mere 12.50€ each and it must be said, there was not one hungry belly left at the tables. The food was excellent and the service was even better than excellent. The day was hot, sadly the golf wasn’t and one can say it was barely luke warm with not one golfer achieving par. The Best Guest prize went to a Sandra Twentyman’s School of Golf Banditry in the name of Peter Long with a steady 35 points and that was the top score of the day. Winning the NTP’s today was an art and even hitting the greens was one, so it seemed. A sleeve of balls went to Roy Rogers, John Hillier and Joe Dean who, it is believed, missed a “2” from just under 2 foot. Shelia has promised to give him some putting lessons. Simon Lee, on the other hand, secured TWO “2’s” and took away both last weeks and this weeks “2’s” money. The Silver Division seem to find this course a little tasking and it only

needed 27 points for John Hillier to take 4th spot. 28 points saw both Colin Marsden and George Smith on 28 points with the older of the two winning on countback for 3rd and 2nd palces. No I am not going to say who came 2nd or 3rd, I will leave it at the “older one”! The Winner of the Silver Boys was Graham Smith with 32 points. The Gold crowd did far a bit better and it the delight on Roger Nilsen’s face when he found out not only did he come 4th with 30 points, but beat the Society Captain on count-back. A pair of 31’s saw Hans Arveson and John Eyre take 3rd and 2nd places and this left Simon “LUFC” Lee with a very credible 34 points to take home the bacon. Photo: Gold Category Winners Talking of bacon, today’s winners were rewarded with a meal for two at the very fine Indian Curry restaurant Punjabi Palace in Los Montesinos, for which we are grateful for the sponsorship. Our next game, Wednesday 6th August 2014, see’s us at Roda golf course where for 30€ (plus 6€ for a buggy) you could join us for a friendly knock; so if you fancy a game just look at our website

Celts Club de Golf Open Day - 26th July, at La Serena Golf Course. The Celts Club de Golf once again held their monthly Open day, at their home golf club La Serena. 41 players in all turned up for the event. The course was as normal in excellent condition, thanks once again to Wayne and the rest of his green staff. We were also well looked after by the staff in the restaurant and the Pro Shop. The sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky, what more could you ask for, other that a decent score at the end of your game. Not all of us had a decent score, but you cannot have everything, however, everybody enjoyed the day and can't wait for next month's Celts Open,on the 30th August. The results of the day are as follows. 1st place Mark McCluskey 39pts, rumors going round, that Mark is now having indoor B.B.Qs at his restaurant. 2nd. place Martyn Heaney 38pts, he will look a very smart boy on the course with his new shoes. Cat1. Camillus Fitzpatrick 37pts. 2nd Damian Corvan 37pts. 3rd John O'Brien 34 pts. John will be very busy for the next three months doing the ironing.... Cat2. Keven Fitzpatrick 37pts. 2nd John Lawrence 37 now known as smiler. 3rd Barry Stevenson 36pts. N.T.Ps. Camillus Fitzpatrick. Alan Campbell. Alisdair McLean. Gordon McCaddon. The two best guest scores were. Jeff Costello 38pts. and Alan Campbell 31pts. Great prizes on the day, and not a shoe bag in sight. Well worth attending the Celts Club de Golf Open days. All are welcome, just contact John O'Brien for information. (see info below) Mark your diary for the next International match at Villaitana on

August 24th. If you want a buggy, please see your team captain. This is great value for all Spanish Federated players who will only pay €20 for the round of golf. SAN JAVIER GOLF SOCIETY - LA FINCA In our last society game we travelled to La Finca for a 6,6,6 event and what a great day out course in very good condition and weather just fantastic. The winning team in this event was Paul Matthews, Christine Flanagan, John Hillier and Frank Murphy with 119pts that was nine points clear of the second team. Well done to David Barnes on winning 3 nearest the pins. Also it was great to see Roy Herbert back on the course with us.

REAL MURCIA FACE ADMINISTRATIVE RELEGATION

The woes continue for Real Murcia as the Segunda outfit has until Thursday to complete their registration for the coming season with the League Authorities to prove they have reached agreements with the National Treasury, over repayment of tax debts of approximately 12 million euro and thereby show themselves financially solvent and able to compete. A spokesman for the LFP (the Liga de Fútbol Profesional) says that the club are not expected to meet the deadline which will result in their administrative relegation to the Segunda B.

C.D TORREVIEJA SEARCH FOR NEW SIGNINGS CONTINUES By Steve Hibberd Last week saw Torry manager Galiani complete 2 more signings, with a promise of more to come. A prolific scoring striker is high of the agenda, but they are hard to come by, and the search continues. Two left sided players, both from Mucian based clubs have been recruited, in time for the next batch of pre season friendlies. Experienced full back, 33 year old Eddy, arrives from div 2b side La Hoya Lorca, who coincidently are pencilled in as friendly opponents in the near future. Joining from Preferente side Pulpino, is 24 year old winger Sele. Although some of the 20 groups in div 3 have already released season 14/15 fixtures, the Valencian region (Torry's group) should be available soon. Season tickets are on sale from the Torry Army office, and at Vicente Garcia Stadium on Weds evenings. At 125 euros for covered stand, and only 90 euros for general ground, they are excellent value. Torry's next friendly is at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, on Wednesday 6 August, ko 7.30 pm, against Preferente side Cox. Although entry is free, those who attend are requested to purchase raffle tickets to help support club funds. Last week's postponed fixture against Cartagena, should be rearranged at a later date.

GOAL LESS DRAW AS CARTAGENA HOLD VALENCIA Valencia Mestalla 0-0 FC Cartagena In their third pre season friendly, held last week at Pinatar Arena, FC Cartagena played out a goalless draw against La Liga’s Valencia Mestalla in front of an enthusiastic 500 spectators. Chances fell to both sides in this even encounter in which Cartagena fielded a number of players who had not figured in the previous two matches against Betis and Rayo Cartagena Coach, Julio Cesar Ribas, said he was very happy with his team’s performance which he fully expects to earn promotion to Segunda A in the coming season.

In their first meaningful pre-season action ahead of the forthcoming campaign, Elche prevailed over divisional rivals Villarreal in a lengthy penalty shoot-out that lacked the tension and nail biting drama served up by, say, Holland and Argentina. A goal apiece was the product of ninety minutes of actual football, but somebody had to be awarded the “Dama d'Elx” trophy for the fifty-fifth time and this time the home side did enough. Just. Pre-season friendlies whichever way you spin them, or the opposition, are solely for the clubs themselves and a, generally, small number of die-hard fans. This evening was no different ! With new faces aplenty in all four corners of the pitch – and in goal – Elche manager Fran Escribá has a limited number of these fixtures in which to get it sorted. Early signs, though - without the intensity La Liga provokes – are, in the main, encouraging. For Elche, the 2014/15 La Liga season can be paraphrased with the acronym SWAT – special weapons and tactics. Last time out, the weapons really weren't that special; an Achilles heel of a strike force which plagued their La Liga return for months on end with a lack of goals. Thankfully, elsewhere the Escribá tactics, particularly the way in which the back four performed, were mostly spot on. This season, their second back in the top flight, the former will need to do considerably better. During the 2013/14 campaign players such as Boakye, Carles Gil, Christian Herrera Fidel and Manu del Moral all chipped in with goalscoring cameos. Now, with the exception of Herrera, they've all left or are going. Much will depend on the scoring prowess of

Brazilian newcomer Jonathas, (from Pescara), while midfield reinforcements with an eye for goal include Mario Pasalic, (Chelsea) and Fayçal Fajr (Rouen). All three had a run out against Villarreal who opened the scoring in fortunate fashion when a Cherysev effort took a massive deflection which left Manu Herrera rooted to the spot. That was the highlight of a dire opening half watched by a reported 14,000 people, (it looked a lot less). Having made expected changes during the break, Elche began brighter and were soon level, Pelegrin connected powerfully with a Damián cross to level things just four minutes after the restart. Garry Rodriguez caught the eye going forward and the introduction of centre-forward Jonathas soon had the Elche public applauding. It's early days, of course, but Elche have the look of a more inventive side than hitherto. Escribá, or his Sporting Director Victor Orta, (recently arrived from Zenit St. Petersburg), appear to have chosen well in the summer transfer market. Time will tell but the initial signs look promising. Elche begin the new season with a trip to the Camp Nou which, early on, before they get into their stride, will probably be the best time to take on Barcelona. When the fixture list was published, most eyes were on the opening sequence of matches. They would have been put to better use checking out the final six or seven fixtures which, this time, have given Elche an altogether easier looking run-in. That presumes, though, that Elche will once again be fending off the unwelcome advances of the Segunda División in another relegation scrap. On the other hand, perhaps the new look Elche will surprise a few people. Hope so !
