THE DARK SIDE OF TOURISM With two separate events in the planning, one a covert nightmare that has haunted residents for years, the other a dream of a local business group looking to take control and cash in on the growing phenomenon, not only have the residents of the Orihuela Costa had to endure an evening of noise and disturbance, not to mention an

incredible amount of litter and rubbish, as thousands of revellers descended on Campoamor this week, they will also have to foot the bill for both the security and cleanup operation for what is nothing more than an illegal party which the authorities are powerless to prevent. In 1999 a local nightclub, not wishing to miss out on the lucrative summer period, decided to hold an outdoor party. Continued on Page 2

That party has since grown into an event which has become amplified since the dawn of social network sites, with tens of thousands of youngsters, both locally and from further afield, descending on the area to party into the night, with an accompaniment of alcohol and other substances. Last year, the police themselves reported that 20,000 people had attended, despite their attempts to discourage the arrival of the hoards, many of whom even hire buses and coaches to bring them. This year was not dissimilar, but for an added complication of a local business creating a ticket only and enclosed party and turn the gathering into an official music festival. Permission to hold the Campoamor Music Festival was originally sought for the 15th of August, which was provisionally accepted by the town hall, subject to a variety of safety standards being approved. However, the organiser then decided to change the date to the 6th of August, which happened to coincide with the first Wednesday of the month, which has become historically known as the day for the illegal “botellón”. Aware of this clash, the coastal department were already against the event taking place, but the activities department of the town hall was still originally prepared to consider it, subject to the same safety standards. On the Friday before the event, and the Monday immediately before Wednesday the 6th, representatives from the town hall appeared before the press and the public to confirm that permission for the event had not been given, pleading with attendees to avoid the area, and they would do everything within their power to prevent the organised event from taking place. The organisers still maintained on their website, Facebook and Twitter feeds that they did have permission, and that the event would take place, claiming to have already sold 6,000 tickets to people wanting to attend. However, on the day, the police arrived and closed off the grounds, forcing everybody involved in the preparation to leave, based on a decree issued by the town hall. The main issue raised by the town hall was that of safety, as the principle access to the site was through a small tunnel, just wide enough for a passenger car to drive through, but considered to be of extreme risk should a large number of peo-

Monday, 11th August, 2014 ple try to pass through it at one time. In 2010, 21 people lost their lives and more than 500 were injured at the “Love Parade” in Germany, where access to the site was also through a similar tunnel. In 2012 in Madrid, 4 people lost their lives when a minor incident at a party caused the mass of attendees to move, which resulted in a stampede and those victims being killed from crush injuries. Other access and egress points had been arranged by the organisers, but it was the tunnel route which led to the site of the “botellón”, and therefore the most likely path to be taken. Whilst there is no doubt that wrist bands for the Campoamor Music Festival had been purchased, the exact confirmed number is unknown, although the organisers have said that they will provide refunds to those who did buy them, with purchasers advised to return to their point of sale. The action of closing down that organised event still didn´t seem to deter the visitors to the beachside gathering, but once again the town hall tried to discourage attendance. They had already refused any kind of organised music, and had the support from the police and Guardia Civil to act in the event of illegal activities taking place, but other than that, the town hall remained powerless, as did the authorities, other than to make the whole experience for those attending as disappointing as possible, in the hope of discouragement in the future. In order to ensure the safety of everybody either involved and living or staying in the surrounding area, a contingency plan was put in place with the police sealing off areas of the beaches and the pine forests, a fire engine was on standby throughout the night at the scene in case of burning, the Protección Civil and emergency services had a temporary portacabin base, an emergency field hospital was set up, complete with a doctor, lifeguards and activity managers were all at the scene, as well as the strong presence by the police, which at least meant that the night went without any major incident, injury or death, but at a price. As the sun rose, so did the “zombies” walking the streets, trying to find their way home. An image of bodies sleeping in the street, surrounded by broken glass, litter and rubbish is not the impression any area would like to give as being the

norm, but it was certainly the case on the Orihuela Costa on Thursday morning. Drink and possibly drug fuelled partygoers, wandering through the roads, passing in front of moving cars, oblivious to the danger, and yet still seemingly believing that they had had a good night, but not providing any financial contribution to the mass operation that had kept them safe. Sources close to the Guardia Civil report that numerous drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs had been caught at the Campoamor roundabout, as the safety net surrounded the area. Similarly, the army of cleaners that descended on the area, more than any year previous, with waste disposal trucks, jet washers, mechanical diggers, trucks and vans, with teams of people all now working with one goal, to clean up the mess as quickly as possible. Even the team of 30 workers who have been carrying out maintenance and street cleaning on temporary contracts were involved, as it became on “all hands on deck” event to clean up the mess. Of course, whilst almost the entire municipal cleaning team focussed on the Campoamor area, that also meant that other areas would suffer, as there was nobody left to carry out the day to day cleaning operation either. This aftermath operation also has a considerable cost, which the residents of Orihuela ultimately have to pay. For the past 15 years this illegal event has taken place, with nobody yet able to prevent it from happening, nor make anybody accountable for the organisation and bill. Perhaps the creation of a “legal” gathering is the only solution, but that must be done with the safety considerations all being put into the action plan to prevent disasters such as occurred in Berlin and Madrid. This can only be done through collaboration however, as one emergency doctor who has dealt with similar incidents in the past said in reference to the Campoamor Music Festival, “I regret that a company does not yet have awareness of what can happen. We can only be thankful that this serves as an example of how not to manage a crisis”, as beyond the barriers of their enclosed space, the crisis management was very much in place, resulting in a safe and eventless night, albeit at a cost now, and quite possibly into the future.

OUR LADY OF JOY FIESTA CELEBRATED IN MIL PALMERAS

The month of August comes ladened with fiestas in Mil Palmeras. They started at the end of July with fireworks and a parade through the streets by the Musical Union of Horadada. Through the streets actually means surrounding la Plaza de Mil Palmeras on which most of the activities have been focussed. Not only has there been singing and dancing but most recently the townsfolk were out in numbers celebrating a religious activity in honor of la Virgen de la Alegría (Our Lady of Joy). Last Sunday’s festivities started on the beach, they passed through la Capilla de las Mil Palmeras, the local church, where, only a couple of hours earlier, the Royal British Legion had been commemorating the Centenary of the outbreak of World War 1. The colourful floral tributes then moved on to la Plaza de Mil Palmeras where hundreds of local residents were out in force to party the weekend away.

The Councillor for Fiestas, Asunción Sánchez, said that this year's turnout was spectacular. She thanked the Association of Residents of Mil Palmeras for getting especially involved in the organization and management of all activities. This year there were two concerts in the plaza, "Mecanlife" and "Ciudad Canalla", which were attended by more than a thousand people who all enjoyed good atmosphere and music. There were performances from the Manoli Fernandez School of Dance as well as the Marina Limarenko Flamenco and Friendship group, the band "Fifth Chord", and the election of Mister and Miss Mil Palmeras 2014, which involved the Municipal Theatre Workshop. For the children there was face painting, storytelling, a facial makeup workshop and a demonstration of a Chinese Dragon Dance, all providing a comprehensive programme of activities that was enjoyed by residents and tourists alike.

TORREVIEJA LOOKIE LOOKIE MEN NO LONGER A PROBLEM Torrevieja´s local police have now considerably scaled down their operation against the so called “lookie lookie men”, as they now consider the issue to be nothing more than a “residual problem”. A senior police officer with the force, Vicente Gutiérrez, says that political pressure exerted during the last year to clear the streets of the vendors, who predominately sell counterweighted goods in the seafront area, has virtually disappeared. This reduction in focus has allowed the patrols to be placed onto other duties, such as dealing with street parties, nightlife and traffic management. The town hall had invested money in creating specialist task forces to deal with the problem, equipped with their own specialist vehicles. The problem had escalated into riots in previous years, resulting in many would

be visitors to choose to avoid visiting the city centre. Legitimate business owners had also expressed concern as the illegal traders were taking business away from them, when they were selling legal, original items, in a city that has already suffered numerous business closures in recent years, partly due to the economic situation, and partly due to the creation of shopping centres around the area. Many believed to be part of organised criminal groups, the vendors operate a network of lookouts whilst selling their illegal goods, although recent reports have indicated that they now simply ignore the police and carry on regardless, above the law and still blighting the streets of a city which aims to be of touristic interest and a town of beautiful sights.

UNFAIR MOVISTAR

CALLS FOR TORREVIEJA MAYOR TO APOLOGISE

The Izquierda Unida group of Torrevieja believes that the only way modern politicians can distance themselves from corruption, is by taking a stand and moving away from the corrupt history that has marred the city in recent years. Local spokesperson for the group, Víctor Ferrández, believes that the current PP government have made “fools of themselves” by “shamelessly” asking for the former mayor of the city, Pedro Hernández Mateo, to remain free from prison, despite being found guilty of corruption. Now, Ferrández believes that the only way of rescuing the situation is for the current mayor, Eduardo Dolón, to publicly apologise for supporting his predecessors bid

Spain's FACUA consumer association has warned of Movistar unfair and unadvertised charges due to be applied to their voicemail service. From the 1st October Movistar / Telefonica will automatically charge landline clients 6.05 cents each time they listen to a message. They say that Movistar are advising subscribers incorrectly, that the service can not be cancelled, and that the contract as whole must be cancelled. FACUA says that users have the right to cancel their contracts at any time without penalty when the Telecoms provider changes their terms and conditions.

ORIHUELA SEES POPULATION RECOVERY Despite the fact that a statistical clean up of population figures was carried out by the Institute of National Statistics earlier this year, Orihuela has now not only recovered the number of occupants lost, but has surpassed the figure before the adjustment was made. The councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, who had been criticised by opposition groups for being solely responsible for the loss of 8,000 residents, told The Leader that the official number of residents in the coastal zone now stands at 35,599, more than before the clean up was carried out. Of that figure, 18,177, more than half, are British citizens, although there are a total of 71 nationalities represented. Within the Spanish population, around 3,000 people were wiped off the census, but 4,504 new people have registered as being residents. In July alone, 16 people officially left the Orihuela Costa, whereas 252 new people arrived, 96 from other municipalities, again dismissing a myth that a mass exodus is leaving the Orihuela Costa to live in neighbouring Torrevieja. In addition, 156 were new residents, never having been listed on a padrón in Spain before. Finally in July, congratulations must be given to the families of the 8 new residents who arrived on the coast through the most natural way, by birth.

The Vega Baja hospital has announced a million euro investment into the expansion of their Emergency Department and with the specification now with contractors it is hoped that the bidding process will be complete and the contract awarded by late October. The plan will see an extension of 269.4 square meters in emergency department, and 76.48 square meters in Rehabilitation. The total area to be remodeled will be 483.5 square meters. Bascuñana first announced the project in June following the hospital visit of the Director General of Health Care in Valencia, Sofía Clar, who said that the plan to modernize the Emergency Department

"is vital to the people of Orihuela if the hospital is to continue giving the appropriate care to patients," in that the bulk of the cases fall to the ER service, approximately 80%. Sofía Clar said during her visit that "this type of investment in new and more modern equipment is absolutely necessary in that it is designed to assist and improve the work of health professionals in order to provide the best quality care." The hospital has also acquired fifty new beds although the intention is to renew all 320 throughout the entire hospital in the coming months. ‘Beds improve comfort and patient independence’ said Bascuñana. ‘ Patients spend the vast majority of their time in these beds so a comfortable bed is an absolute necessity as part of their wellbeing and recovery.’

NEW APP FOR CONTACTING SPANISH POLICE The Ministry of Interior has launched a mobile phone application that allows users direct contact with the police for reporting crimes, whether as a victim or a witness. “Alertcops” has been undergoing testing in Málaga, and will spread through Alicante and Madrid, reaching the whole of Spain by 2015, having already been downloaded 17,000 times. Capable of recording the geographic location of the mobile device, the app then sends the information to the police, thus speeding up the entire reporting process. Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz explained that the aim of this new service is to “provide a fast and efficient service through a modern and easily accessible tool”, thus improving public safety. He also stressed the importance of this new application that, in his opinion, opens a “communication channel in accordance with the demands of today´s society, laying the foundation for a social safety net”.

The application is available for both the Android and iOS operating systems, and can be downloaded for free. Once downloaded, you only need to register and create a new user and providing your personal information to complete the registration process, confirming your details through a validation code in a text message. Once downloaded, the user needs to register an account, keeping in mind that the application is not a toy and will alert the authorities if you report anything, but when you do, the status of your report can be monitored throughout the situation. The application has elements to assist those people who suffer from hearing impairment and allows foreigners visiting or residing in Spain to use the app in English as well as Spanish, with French, German, Italian and Portuguese being added soon. “Alertcops” is part of the SIMASC (System of Mobile Alerts for Citizen Security) technology platform, which aims to provide universal access to public services and security throughout society. Of course the free application may add to the confusion in Torrevieja, who are getting a video conference link with the police instead of a fully staffed National Police station, as this application would be carried in everybody´s pocket, with no need to attend the static location in the city centre.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The ‘Can’t Do’ Bureaucrat I hate wasting time, and Spanish bureaucracy is one of the greediest when it comes to pointless time wasting activities. In my experience, the bureaucrats of all nations are two distinct species, the ones who ‘can do’ and the ones who ‘can’t do’ – in other words, jobsworths. This more depressing of the species is also part of the ‘my glass is half empty’ rather than the more positive ‘my glass is half full’ bureaucrat. Mobile phone networks are one of the few things that I dislike about life in Spain. By all accounts, this view is not restricted to Spain, but is a common criticism of phone companies in other countries too. During the years that I have lived in Spain, I have tried all the networks and each time have suffered poor quality service, high pricing, together with a ‘couldn't care less’ attitude to customer service. For expats, the fun and games often plummet to new lows when it comes to the termination of a mobile phone contract. Several years ago, it took me six months to terminate a contract that had already ended. I promised that I would never again be caught by a mobile phone contract in Spain. As a result, I usually purchase an unlocked mobile phone in the UK and use it with a prepaid Spanish sim card. Several years ago, a good friend advised me to try a new company that offered fair pricing, good coverage and a no nonsense approach to its business. I have been with them since the service began, albeit by obtaining a card from my friend living in the Peninsular, as the service was not, until recently, available in the Canary Islands. A smart new 4G phone, together with 4G coverage in my area, means

that I have been finally tempted away in favour of another company, since my current company is unlikely to offer a 4G service for some time. However, before I can access the delights of 4G, I have to have a contract, without a new phone, with the company as part of the deal. I decided to forget my earlier promise, and headed off to the nearest shop to sign up and collect the new sim card for my phone. Knowing how Spanish bureaucrats have an unhealthy greed for all paperwork, I took my residency document, national identity number, copy of my passport (notarised by the police and a notary), bank details, utility bills, together with details of my existing phone service to the mobile phone shop. The unhelpful and miserable looking man at the counter, a ‘can’t do bureaucrat’ if ever there was one, took a cursory look at my documents, sniffed and muttered that I needed to get a copy of a paid utility bill from my bank before he could give me a sim card. I headed off to the bank, queued for the obligatory 90 minutes, and was eventually issued with what I was told was the correct document, which would satisfy any mobile phone company. I headed back to the phone shop and cheerfully presented the document. Again, the ‘can’t do bureaucrat’ took a brief glance at the piece of paper, shook his head and said that it had to be officially stamped by the bank, which it was not. I drove back to the bank, where I adopted the Canarian technique of importantly moving to the front of the queue with a “Will you just?” question. No one appeared to mind too much, my document was stamped, signed and dated and I headed back to the shop. The ‘can’t do bureaucrat’ examined my documents, smirked, shook his head and told me that I needed to bring my original passport to the shop. Now, I have been caught by this one many times before and since being robbed and relieved of my passport in Madrid many years ago, my passport is securely locked away and never sees the light of day until I leave the island. I use a notarised and police verified document, which is always accepted without question. However, this time was to be the exception. With my patience now stretched to the limit, I returned to the shop with the original documents. The ‘can’t do bureaucrat’ examined all the documents once again, gave a brief nod, but then told me that he

didn't have the very small nano sim cards in stock and that I would have to wait for a few days until they arrived from Barcelona and return to the shop to collect the card. I collected my documents, told the ‘can’t do bureaucrat’ to forget it, returned home and completed the entire transaction on line in a few minutes. The sim card arrived by courier two days later. This entire experience took the best part of a day and once again reminded me of the horrors of mobile phone contracts, as well as how easy it is to fall into a Spanish bureaucratic nightmare. My best advice is to stick with a prepaid sim, or if you must have a contract and are computer and Spanish language savvy, do it yourself on line. CAR SALES SECTOR SHOWS SIGNS OF RECOVERY

Having registered 33,219 new car sales between January and July of this year, the province of Alicante has sold more than neighbouring Valencia and Castellón combined. However, given the touristic interest in the Costa Blanca area in particular, it may come as no surprise to learn that nearly two thirds of the 33,219 sales in Alicante are to car rental companies, with a total of 19,062 units acquired. The government funded PIVE scheme is also thought to have had a positive impact on sales, whereas a discount can be applied by trading in an older vehicle. The number of cars sold has also increased as a result, with 11,389 units sold across Alicante since the beginning of 2013, compared to 9,360 in the same period of last year, an increase of 22%. Valencia saw 19,939 units sold in the first seven months, and the figure in Castellón was 9,084. The Director of Communications for the association of car manufacturers, Anfac, said that “private consumption in Spain is recovering” and we are now beginning to see a growing increase in consumer confidence”.

GRAVE FEARS FOR CIRCUS ANIMALS British family holidaying in Villa Joyosa near Alicante city have raised grave concerns about a group of circus animals kept inside a 12-metre container in sweltering conditions since Monday (July 28). Anne Rowe and her family witnessed Circo Nevada staff herding the eight horses and ponies, two camels and a monkey into the container after the final show finished on Monday night. She says the animals are only let out of the container to drink for five minutes each day and are not being properly fed. “They get brought out for a couple minutes for a little drink and then are returned to this container for the next 24 hours,” Anne said. “They would all be better off dead than living this terrible existence.” Sue and Rod Weeding from the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation in Rojales plus staff from Alicante’s La Fundación Raúl Mérida, which deals with wild animals and circuses, are assisting with the case and the police are expected to visit the site this week. “We’re doing everything we can to get the authorities to intervene but it’s quite difficult,” Sue said. “The problem with circuses is that they just move from place to place and once they’ve moved the animals, the whole process has to start again because they’re in a different province.” While some councils across Spain, including Guardamar, have banned circuses with live animals, the practice is still legal in most areas. “People need to be aware that this type of thing often happens with circus animals, they’re just not cared for properly,” Sue said. “Really, in this day and age it’s unbelievable that this still goes on. It’s really important not to support these type of circuses with animals.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys saved from abuse and neglect

A traditional element in some areas of Spain, causing the abuse of an animal when it is “is not tied to the tradition of the municipality”, is considered unacceptable.

PRISM LENS TECHNOLOGY HIGHLY EFFECTIVE AT TREATING DOUBLE VISION

Double vision can easily be treated

Double vision (diplopia) is one of the most troublesome visual disorders a patient can experience, affecting the ability to read, walk and perform common activities such as driving. There are a number of ways to treat this condition; one of the most effective and least intrusive ways is being presson prisms applied to the patient's glasses. These are known as Fresnel lenses and they can be prescribed and fitted by licensed optometrists, opticians, and ophthalmologistsand simply attached to a standard lens. In simple terms, the prisms move the image from its current position to the position you want it to be in order to see clearly. When one eye is not aligned, the image seen by that eye is outside the key area where the images from both eyes merge in the macula and create a single image. The prism will change the direction of that image to be in the correct area so both images will merge and create normal binocular single vision. This can be highly effective when using in tandem with some exercises to build up the muscles in the eye, although in some cases, a patient may need to have surgery or vision therapy to fix it. This simple treatment can really change lives, as can be seen in the case of Costa Blanca resident Diane Ward, who has been suffering debilitating double vision for 14 years. Her double vision was caused by laser surgery to cure a brain tumor and gradually got worse until she was unable to drive, or even walk with confidence. The doctor who

23

www.yourlocalnewspaper.info

treated the tumor advised Diane that there was nothing she could do to improve the double vision, so for many years she was virtually a prisoner in her own home due to the condition. Her daughter convinced her to go to SpecsaversOpticas in Benidorm for an eye test and she was amazed with the results. Diane explained; “The optometrist Jorge took so much time and care over my eye test, asking many questions and trying lots of different lenses. I remember looking up to the ceiling and seeing all the tiles floating around in front of me as they always do, then he put in another lens and suddenly it was clear –I couldn’t believe it! It is the best I have been able to see for years and although I still can’t drive I have much more confidence walking and moving around, which has given me so much more freedom. I would strongly advise anyone with a similar problem to go and seek a second opinion and not simply put up with terrible double vision as I did.” Optometrist Jorge Martínez de LizarduyAraico added, “Make sure that your optician gives you a thorough eye test, do your research and ask them to try different things. If you’re unhappy, always seek second opinion, as no one should be suffering unnecessarily when there are a lot of innovative solutions for improving common optical problems like double vision available.” To find your nearest SpecsaversOpticas visit www.specsavers.es

TV HIGHS Spain´s Telefonica has said that it will “comfortably” reach its target of 1.5 million subscribers to its pay to view television service by the end of the year. In July, the company signed up 200,000 new users in a single month, already breaking the 1.4 million benchmark. The company has attributed the growth to their rollout of faster internet networks. The closest rival, Ono, which was bought by the Vodafone group, had 790,000 subscribers at the end of July. Telefonica is also intending to purchase Canal+, subject to approval by regulators, which would firmly fix them as the market leader in pay TV, with 3 million subscribers and 60% of the market share.

WE CAN Relatively unheard of before the European elections, having only forming 4 months before winning their 8 parliamentary seats, the political group Podemos is now holding third place in Spain, according to the latest opinion polls published this week. The left wing party would take 15.3% of the overall votes, with 21.2% going to the socialist PSOE, and 30% for the conservative PP, according to the 2,471 people surveyed by the CIS official group.

One hundred years after the outbreak of the First World War, this dramatised documentary series uses the original diaries, letters and memoirs of the men and women who were there. In episode two, cockney lad Reg Evans is shot in the face in the trenches and is among the first soldiers to undergo pioneering plastic surgery. There is more about Alan Lloyd, who swapped life at home with his recently-wed wife and baby for the battlefields and the Somme. On the Home Front, society cook and restaurateur Hallie Miles and women’s suffrage campaigner Kate Parry Frye witness the old certainties of the Edwardian world crumble. The changes in the lives of all British women were seismic. More opportunities opened up and jobs hitherto denied them became available as an increasing number of men were called up to fight. 23:00 ITV News and Weather. 23:15 Kids with Cameras: Diary of a Children’s Ward. 00:15 The Cube. 01:15 The Store. 03:00 Motorsport UK. 03:50 British Superbike Highlights. 05:00 Britain’s Best Bakery. 05:50 ITV Nightscreen. LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL DONATES 500 EUROS TO THE SAN MIGUEL FOOD BANK. The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club has donated 500 Euros to the food bank of the Association of Neighbours "San Miguel Archangel" of San Miguel de Salinas. Some of the money has been used for the purchase of eggs, oil, baby milk, butter and fruit, to supplement the basic food basket of the July and August allocation.

The generosity of the Lions Club towards the food bank of San Miguel de Salinas ensures an ongoing partnership to help poor local families as the organisation has pledged to provide further financial support in the future according to need. The Lions Club is an international organization with 1.35 million active members in more than 206 countries. This organization aims to meet the needs of the community both locally and internationally. A priority in this time of crisis is the fight against hunger. The fact is that 2014 has seen a reduction in the allocations of food aid from the governments of the Valencia Autonomous Region and the Alicante Province to the food banks of every small town due to economic cut backs. ‘San Miguel de Salinas’, the Association says,’ is fortunate to have partners who understand the problems and give generously to the project. As well as Lions Club International, the Association works with other organisations, including the Help Association Vega Baja, to provide assistance to those in greatest need. But equally it is the small donations of food from regular shoppers at Mas y Mas Supermarket in San Miguel that make a significant difference. The Mas y Mas Group has supported all local Food Banks in every town where it has a supermarket. The food drop at the front of the supermarket is emptied daily by volunteers and general advice on what is most needed is posted at the drop. The Association thanks all the organisations, individuals and volunteers, some even Food Bank recipients themselves, who contribute on behalf of those who receive help.’ Whilst there are varying forecasts about the trends in unemployment the reality is that there are many families in many villages that are struggling. In San Miguel de Salinas there are up to 70 families at any one time, sometimes as many as 8 members in each family. It is unemployment that has swelled the ranks of Food Bank recipients. Social benefits are not as generous as they are in some other European Countries but those reading this will be of the firm belief that no one should go hungry in modern day Europe. The Association of Neighbours, in recognising that unemployment is a key element to hardship, have registered a cooperative for the unemployed workers of the village. It is called ‘Angeles de San Miguel Coop. V’, or the Angels of San Miguel, and is an official Cooperativa de Trabajo Valenciana. Services of cleaning, gardening, painting and general labouring are offered at reasonable rates. LA FUENTE PAYS IT’S RESPECTS Whilst on Monday evening the lights were dimmed across the UK as a sign of respect to those who gave their lives during the Great War it took two holidaymakers from Sheffield to bring the observance to the C o s t a Blanca. David Pearson had been busy organizing a commemorative event in his home town at Mosborough Rugby Club but when a holiday opportunity arose he had to leave the final preparation with colleagues as he and his family took the opportunity to enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine. So with time on his hands here in Spain, and with nothing planned in the local area, it seemed only natural that he arrange a similar event at a local bar. James Dumbreck was delighted to offer La Sahara Bar in CC La Fuente as a venue. The Royal British Legion Recruiting Officer Jim Watt became involved and the event began to take shape, culminating with the commemorative act on Monday night as bar owners, restaurateurs and members of the public united with thousands of people across the UK to dim their lights, leading up to the moment at 11pm that Prime Minister Herbert Asquith declared Britain’s involvement in the conflict that would go on to claim an estimated 16 million lives.

The commemoration follows on from the words of the then-foreign secretary Sir Edward Grey, who said portentously after the declaration "The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime." In the UK, the Houses of Parliament, Broadcasting House, home of the BBC in London, and St Paul’s Cathedral, as well as hundreds of councils, iconic buildings, national organisations, including the Royal British Legion, took part in the ceremony. Blackpool illuminations, the Eden Project, the Imperial War Museums and Tower Bridge also went dark. In the minutes leading up to the ‘dimming of the lights’ at CC La Fuente, David was joined by Lisa Gascoigne, a schoolteacher, who has spent the last months introducing her students to this significant period in history at the Westfield Secondary School in Sheffield. The pair set the scene and recited letters and poems from the time. The event concluded with ‘The Last Post’ which was rightly dignified, as many dozens of holidaymakers rose and stood silently to pay their respects, for each a personal gesture in remembrance of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us 100 years ago and who must never be forgotten.

WW1 CENTENARY COMMEMORATED IN TORREVIEJA TORREVIEJA - CHAPLAINCY (LA SIESTA) AND THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION On a particularly hot and sunny Sunday 3 August morning many gathered in the shade of the trees at the La Siesta Church RBL Remembrance Memorial Garden to commemorate the start of WW1 100 years ago. Members of Anglican Chaplaincy Church Centre Congregations and the other denomination who worship at the La Siesta Church and were joined by members of the Torrevieja Branch of the RBL. The Torrevieja RBL were also proud to parade their Standards. The Service was led by Father Andrew Rea of the Anglican Chaplaincy, with prayers and thanksgiving for all those involved with many opportunities for silent reflection. Michael Elliott, a member of the La Siesta Anglican congregation and the Torrevieja RBL read the ‘Exhortation’: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. As the Service continued … and whilst Gillian Burden the Torrevieja Branch Lady Chairman read the poignant poem ‘In Flanders Fields ‘ - those gathered there were able to scatter poppies and poppy petals in the Memorial Garden and lay memorial Remembrance crosses Passages from the Bible were read by Bruce Heath, the La Siesta Anglican Congregational Warden, and President of the local RAFA Branch together with Michael Elliott

After the Service a RBL Memorial Wreath was laid in the Memorial Garden by Douglas Sidwell the Torrevieja RBL Branch President when many who were gathered there took the opportunity to scatter more poppy petals and lay further Remembrance Crosses in silent reflection. TMGS MATCH REPORT FOR RODA - 6TH AUGUST 2014. Only Alan Rickers bettered his handicap at Roda and it must be said, once again. He seems to like this course for this is the 2nd time in 3 visits. Once again, it was pleasing to find out that the wind wasn’t blowing as strong as normal but that didn’t seem to quell the low scores on this well cared for golf course, albeit slow greens that are expected this time of the year. The course and the staff are very welcoming at Roda and it is a delight to be treated as golfers and not just as “fodder”. Only three of the four NTP’s were claimed and these were by Joe Dean , Mark Howard and Simon “LUFC” Lee. It was pleasing to see that the obvious hard work on a putting lesson by Shelia Dean worked on her hubby, for he and Derek Sullivan managed to secure a “Two” and take away the donations. We had a few guests and it seems that one guest who complained about his name being incorrect last week when he was called Peter. Well, if you had a name of PATSY, I’d be happy to be called Peter. However, he was in the frame again this week and will enjoy yet another cut, so Patsy Long, enjoy the limelight, it will be ending. The overall winner of the guest prize

was the son of Peter Wells – M Wells with 34 points which earned the bragging rights over his old man. There is no doubt about it, the Silver Division, did not appear to enjoy the course with a score of only 25 from Colin Marsden to take 3rd spot. Mick Kennedy, once again, featured with a nice knock of 32 points taking 2nd place and with 33 points, Alex “sorry for being late” Goslan taking top spot in the Silver Division. The Gold lads fared slightly better and with much delight, Joe Dean announced he took 3rd spot above “a certain golfer” with 34 points being beaten on the count-back by Derek Sullivan. However, way out in front of everyone and a certain for a cut, was Alan Rickers with a very fine 38 points. Our next game, Wednesday 13th August see’s us at La Finca, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966 71 9604. In addition, please take the time to visit www.golfdeclubelparaison.com for details of a totally new golf club (NOT a Society) and see how you can save money on green fees and enjoy Federated competitions.

FRIENDLY BAR GOLF SOCIETY - STEVE ADAMS MEMORIAL Our society was at Font Del Llop golf course for the Steve Adams Memorial Trophy completion. Steve passed away at a young age with cancer. He was the brother of the owner of the Friendly Bar, Dave. First impression it looked a great golf course with stunning views however if you found yourself in the semi rough the grass seemed to eat your golf ball, or just refused to give it back .Also the greens were quite slow ,having said that it proved to be a great day out and for me very enjoyable, if at time difficult for my handicap and style of play. There were 26 society members and four guests who faced the soaring temperature. Glad of the slight breeze that came up through the valley and the thought of a cold pint at the 19th hole. We played a four ball stableford bringing in some respectable scores on the day. We only play once a month so anything within the 30s is fine by me. Winner on the day was Henry Young with a score of 37. Henry will

retain the trophy for 12 months until next time. 2nd was Gary Scullion, longest drive went to Mick Goss, and nearest the pin was Clive Grice (I was pipped at the post). The best guest was Robert Gandley with 29pts. Value for money was Del Howard. They did say the prize was a golf lesson but I think that he does alright. I believe that once again every one had a grand day out and we are looking forward to our trip to La Manga on the last Thursday of August (another hot day at the office). Members should get their names down as soon as possible . The society is helping financially with the costs for which looks like another test for me and a few others . I can't wait. Remember the wheels on the bus go round and round, also in the right direction not like some who drove via most of Spain to get there. Scouse's sat-navneeds up dating mate. See you all next time at La Manga, first tee.

BUSTERS AUGUST GS REPORT

Well it certainly doesn’t get any cooler , setting off from home at around 08:00 to meet up prior to playing , when the temperatures are often about 18 , however they have usually risen to 28-30 by the time we are ready to tee off , but we aint fooled by this and we come prepared with plenty of fluids , some frozen some in a cool bag but the important thing is that we have sufficient H20 or some liquid . Friday the 1st August was no different to the last few weeks with the August temperature reaching above 30 , we kid ourselves that this is what we are here in Spain for but I have yet to hear anyone say ( Spanish or none Spanish ) that they feel comfortable with the heat , but enough of this whinging , we are here and last Friday we played at Bonalba , the course was in very good condition although the greens were a little indifferent . We were greeted by the staff and as part of Bonalba’s deal coffee was provided on arrival . Bonalba along with some other courses now insist that we pay them for insurance albeit through the Spanish Golf Federation , this may only be a small cost but I wonder how they can justify that we have to use the ‘ Federation ‘ for this facility , many of our members were part of the Spanish Golf Federation in the past but became disillusioned as when they tried to contact the Federation , usually by email to find out either what benefits they gave us or what competitions they organised or in fact any query , they never even got the courtesy of a reply , I personally paid my Federation fees for 6 years and during that time never had anything advising me what cover or benefits they provided for the fees that they received , I think that this is something that needs looking into by the courses in question . Onto the rest of our day , we returned to a warm welcome at the Mini Golf bar in Quesada which is located a few minutes away from the Quesada Arches , after a couple of beers we had our prize presentation , no one broke par but their were three players tying for first place with thirty three points each so a count back was necessary , in first place by means of a better back nine was Martin Collins winning a litre bottle of Smirnoff vodka , in second place was Nikki Ead receiving a bottle of Rioja and a bottle of Rose our third place was taken by Barrie Hopkinson who took a bottle of Rioja back home , also winning a bottle of Rioja each for the best back and front nines were Phil Harris and Alan Gifford , our NTP s were taken by , on holes four and eight Nikki Ead hole eleven was won by Martin Collins and Chris Ives had NTP on hole fourteen , our soccer cards winner was Barrie Hopkinson who had selected Liverpool . EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB. I find the summer a great time in the bowling year, there are no fixed days to tell my wife I am unavailable for family and home life and we can fit in together all the tasks and pleasures that have been put off many times. Yet I can, when available, turn up for some great fun bowling in great company on club days and it is fun, being in just a small group of friends. I do find it sad, however when I hear in all clubs that the main point of dissatisfaction is team selection, whilst I accept that for some it is life itself, for most it is just a friendly pastime hopeful-

ly built on fairness and civility. At El Rancho we are holding an Open Morning on Thursday 21st August, for interested parties to come along, have a roll up or join in the Chicken run or have a chat. The New Members Fee 100€ for the coming year, for further infor contact Carolyn Harris on 966 77 4316 elranchobowls.secretary@gmail.com or Stew Hamill on 966 78 9971 stewjanehamill@hotmail.com. LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY SUMMER CUP - Alicante Golf In the summer when days are hot I Iike to find a shady spot And hardly move a single bit And sit and sit and sit and sit. What a wonderful thought, but instead of sitting we spent all day in the sun trying to put a little white ball down the hole. Alicante was a good back drop for our 4th major of the season, the greens and fairways were in good condition all with plenty of grass to play from. The water hazards were a problem for some as they acted like a magnet for the ball

but the course was a good test of golf. The heat took its toll on our vitality but everyone survived the day even though it took over five hours for some to finish. An evening meal had been arranged so plenty of time after the game for a bit of recuperation before going to the Tavern. On the major days the Society like to ply some of the money back to members, so the evening meal and entertainment was free for those playing on the day and only a small amount was charged for partners and guests. Thanks go to The Tavern staff for proving the evening meal much enjoyed by

everyone. The presentation of the prize went like this: The winner of the Summer Cup: Brian Coultate with 34pts, 2nd Eddy Downing 32pts, 3rd George Stewart 29pts 4th Malcolm Morrison 28pts. NTPs: George Stewart hole 3, hole 6 Paul Flanaghan, hole 8 Chris Nield, hole 12 Dave Norton and holes 15 and 17 John Dunnion. Even though we had 6 nearest the pins there were no 2s recorded so a triple roll over for Altorreal on the 20th August. The free game draw was won by Brian Coultate.

NO SUMMER BREAK FOR SUPERMOTOLAND TEAM The Supermoto racing brothers from Murcia have had a busy time over the summer period. Whilst most people are heading for the beaches of Spain for a well deserved vacation during the hottest months of the year the two brothers have been constantly hitting the race tracks of Spain to further prepare themselves for the second half of the season. With Mat holding a commanding lead in the SM Master 35 class and Anthony only 34 points off the leader in the SM Open class, both brothers know that a Spanish championship title is within grasp and they are determined to be in prime shape for the final championship races of the year that commence on Sunday 7th September at Albaida circuit near Alcoy, Alicante. They were joined last week by Britain’s Motogp racer, Scott Redding who put in three days training with the Supermotoland team at the Fortuna and Albaida circuits to further improve his Supermoto skills and physical condition before he jets out to America for the next Motogp race. Training on a Supermoto bike in 40 degrees of heat whilst Battling with the two brothers is pretty much ideal preparation for racing in MotoGP’s and Scott thoroughly enjoyed his experience as well as meeting the many

Mat Ford-Dunn Ford-Dunn fans that turned up to see him ride. The testing and training continues over August and the Brothers are hoping that the effort they are putting in now, will pay off in the forth coming races on their Advance Moves International Removals Sponsored Race bikes and a championship title becomes a reality. ‘Mike Probert talks Golf (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Corvera Golf Resort – Final Update’ Unfortunately a few weeks ago it was necessary to inform you of the problems being faced by Corvera Golf Resort in respect of financial controls and limitations imposed upon them by the Spanish Tax Authorities and as a result the courses and in particular the greens had not been watered for 12 days. I have made repeated attempts via landline, mobile and e-mail to contact the caddy master office but without response. From my previous experiences with both La Tercia and Mosa Trajectum it appears to be the Spanish way for the owners to stick their heads in the sand and run a business into the ground and simply ‘shut-up shop’ without making a formal announcement to either the public or the agents and tour operators representing them and who are the people faced with answering the questions from the concerned and paying public. Agents and Tour Operators have to sign formal contracts and agreements with golf courses which include the need to represent the courses in a professional and ethical manner. It would appear that for those courses that have closed the opposite doesn’t appear to apply as the owners and bosses ‘disappeared into the sunset’ without notification to cease trading. We can safely assume that Corvera is now closed. ‘The True Cost of NO Entertainment on the Costa Blanca – Update’ Last week we raised the issue of Local Police officers raiding bars and stopping ‘live’ music performances which in turn is impacting on golfers re-turning to the area in future years. Well there is ‘mutiny’ a foot because in response an action group has been created to challenge and understand this issue with the authorities. The first feedback will certainly ‘make the fur fly’ because it appears that the Local Police Officers don’t actually have the power to stop live music, only the Guardia Civil Officers can do that so watch this space for what happens next! We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY AT VILLAMARTIN. San Miguel Golf Society received its usual friendly welcome to our monthly visit to the flagship Quara course. Beautiful greens & fairways greeted us, just some necessary scarifying taking place on the teeboxes was the only slight blot on the green & pleasant landscape. It was a welcome change to be teeing off at a slightly cooler time of the day with all of us underway before 10am. It took another good hour or so for the early overcast conditions to be burnt off as the sun rose higher in yet another blue & cloudless Spanish sky......doesn't it get boring? - yes, it certainly does but it's boring & beautiful. It was the final round of the annual eclectic competition and apres golf discussion revealed quite a few players who had managed to add the odd 3 or even 4 pointer to their previous efforts. All will be revealed at next month's big bash - Captain's night on 27th Sept.......places for both the golf (24th) & the big night itself are going very fast so book a.s.a.p. to avoid any disappointment The 4 NTP's went to Les Wilton (6), Graham Cockayne (9), Andy Whiteley (13) & Steve Davis (17). The 2 top scores from the visitors were Dean Holmes with a tremendous 41 points & Alan Tickner with 33 points. Bronze division's top 3 were Ian Parkinson in 3rd (34), 2nd was Chris Hamblett (35) & Norman McBride took top spot with the day's highest score - 41 points. Silver's winners were Marg Birtwistle in 3rd (33), hubbie, Phil Birtwistle in 2nd (35) & Alan Gilbert was first with 36 pts. The golden boys all scored well with Darren Hancock in 3rd spot (35 C/B), 2nd was Tony Smale (38) & our very much "in form" Captain

Steve Davis took the top slot with an excellent 39 points. Well done to all those in the prizes. Paying a regular visit to www.smgs.org will help keep you up to date with all society matters whereas a quick call to Phil on 966 774 197 will help you with all the details of future Wednesday meetings.....come & join us, visitors are made very welcome.

ALFIE’S GOLF SOCIETY AT LAS RAMBLAS - By Michael Morris 27 members and 13 guests from Alfie’s GS made the short trip up the road to Las Ramblas on July 31. An excellent turnout for the time of year considering the summer heat, which today had well and truly arrived, 32C shade temperatures forecast by the afternoon. Over the years I have heard a lot of people’s opinions on the course at Las Ramblas, including one from one of the course marshals here that the late great Severiano Ballesteros had played here and described it as 'unfair'. Maybe Seve had an off day on his visit! One regular playing partner of mine said to me one day that his advice to anyone who is unfamiliar with the course here is to 'aim for what you can see'. Sound advice and that's what I tell any Las Ramblas 'virgins'. Numerous gullies, ravines, tight, sloping tree lined fairways waiting to catch any inaccuracies in anyone's game, yeah it's tough alright, but in my opinion a great golf course in its own individual style and always in excellent condition. The match itself, with so many Las Ramblas’ members playing, one or two of those were always going to be in the shake up for the month-

ly prize and so it proved with the course specialists all close to the winning total of 37 points scored by Peter Golder (hcap 21), just pipping Tony Hall (12) into 2nd with 36 points. N/Ps on holes 6 & 14 were won by Wayne Stevenson and Sam Cobley respectively. Michael Morris saved his best drive of the day to take the longest drive prize on the 17th, and the Soberano was quickly snaffled by Anita and put straight in the stock room! Best guest on the day with, wait for it...44 points (cut in order) was Alan Connell. Congratulations to all the winners on the day. The usual thanks to our hard working committee, Anita at Alfie's for the buffet, and to Mike Probert from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services for arranging our day out. Next month (Thursday, 28 August - tee off 10.40am) sees us at another excellent course, La Finca, and there are a limited number of places available. Guests are more than welcome and if you want to play please pop in to see me at Alfie's Bar, or mail Sandie at: alfiesgolfsociety@gmail.com.

THE ORANGE TREE GOLF SOCIETY - at Hacienda Del Riquelme Once again this new golf society met for breakfast and instructions at The Orange Tree bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig before setting of for the golf society. What a pleasure it is to be returning to this wonderful course after it was forced to close to sort out its greens. What a fantastic job that has been done, all though the greens were slow due to excess grass, it is understandable due to previous problems. This course is now again one of the best and must thank all the staff for the excellent service and friendly welcome. Once gathered in the bar the Captain, Nigel Cawthra, decided on a pairs betterball stableford competition. We all then set off on a wonderful sunny (and extremely hot) day. Great pleasure was had by all playing with friends. We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree bar and restaurant in Cabo Roig, for the presentation and a few drinks along with the excellent snacks. Thanks must go to Chris, Viv, Nigel, Hannah, Lilly, Brian, Tom, Jody, Rhona, Ann Marie, Kaz and Katie for the wonderful service. The winners (has shown in the picture) were Chris Blown and Fred Noakes with 41 points, 2nd were Kedric Rhodes and Andy Shuttle with 40 and 3rd were Kevin Wenn and Peter Curley with 39. NTP´s went to Stuart Robertson, Kevin Wenn and Dave Eadington The next society event is on Tuesday 19th August, all golfers of any standard are welcome to join the regular members and can either place they name upon the start sheet within the restaurant. Or you can either phone the restaurant on 965 32 3235, or email us on orangetree@hotmail.es. All the fixtures and results for the society can be viewed on the website www.orangetree-caboroig.com

ORIHULA APPOINT THE EXPERIENCED TÉBAR

CD TORREVIEJA ROUNDUP GALIANA'S NEW BOYS STARTING TO GELL CD TORREVIJA - 2 PINOSO CF - 0 Preferente side Pinoso provided the opposition last Saturday, as Torry embarked on their 4th pre season warm up match. Torry took the lead after 11 mins, when Rafa Gomez coolly converted a Mati cross from the right wing. Adrian was fouled, in what looked just inside the box, but the ref awarded it outside, then from the resultant free kick, Rafa G has his effort well saved. The game turned a bit scrappy, result-

ing in bookings for 2 Pinoso players, plus Sergi for retaliation. Trialist Steve Ekedi, side footed home a Rafa G left wing cross on 42 mins. An experimental side, consisting mainly of youthful inexperience, never looked like conceding a goal in the 2nd half. With Vicente and Carrasco running the show, Pinoso chose to commit a series of nasty fouls, which earned them a further 2 cautions. Vicente, Carrasco and Joaquin, all came close to scoring for Torry, whilst up the other end, Oscar came to his sides res-

CRISTIAN SANCHEZ SHINES IN ENTERTAINING WARM UP CD TORREVIEJA - 4 CD COX - 1 Last Wednesday inside Nelson Mandela Stadium, Torry recorded their first pre season friendly victory, 4-1 against Preferente side Cox. On 14 mins, from just inside the box, Patri fired home a fierce low drive, beating Cox's keeper at the near post. Against the run of play on 27 mins, Bryan picked up a loose ball, and was given time to pick his spot for the equalizer. Patri scored his 2nd goal shortly afterwards, this time, a simple tap in from a corner. The opposition then resorted to alehouse tactics, resulting in 2 of them picking up bookings for over zealous tackles! On the stroke of half time, Alexis put in a powerful goal bound header,

only to be denied by a superb goalkeeping save. A complete change of personnel, saw Torry increase their lead on 55 mins, courtesy of Rafa Gomez close range shot, following an inch perfect cross by Cristian Sanchez. Another very late challenge on Sanchez resulted in another yellow card, as Cox found it hard to contain the skilful wing man. Moments later, he provided an accurate assist for Rafa Gomez, who faced with a 1 on 1 with the keeper, was judged offside. Praise must be given to the match referee, who controlled the match admirably, without the luxury of any assistants (I've been there, and believe me, it aint easy!!). It was Sanchez who once again

cue, when he tipped a dipping goal bound effort over the bar. Torry start div 3 season 14/15 on Sun 24 Aug, with a home fixture against SAGUNTINO, and finish also at home, to ALZIRA on 17 May. The first away match is at UTIEL on 31 Aug. Other games of note are against local rivals ORIHUELA, at home on 28 Sep, and away on 15 feb. On Tues 12 Aug, ko 7.30 pm, div 2b side La Hoya Lorca visit Vicente Garcia Stadium, for another pre season friendly. Admission is only 5 euros.

TORRY ARMY SOCIAL EVENT On Saturday 16 August at 8.00 pm at the Casa Ventura in San Luis an evening of comedy with Doris with a few songs from Bryan. Cost is 10 euro's per head including a scrumptious hot & cold buffet. ALL welcome. Tickets on sale at the Torry Army Office in San Luis or from Arthur/Tina - telephone 966789212. executed a peach of delivery, leaving Jordi a bread and butter finish, as Torry notched home their 4th. Shortly before limping off the pitch for treatment, Sanchez found time to strike a beauty, but unfortunately a post denied a goal he so richly deserved.

After falling at the very final promotion hurdle last season, when they lost the home leg of their playoff final to Real Betis B, with debts of over 60,000 euro, Orihuela CF were thought unlikely to survive. Although that debt still exists and a repayment plan has still to be agreed by the courts the club has been included in the new season list of Tercera fixtures by the Valencia Football Federation although the oriolano club will soon reform under the banner of Deportivo Orihuela But that has not stopped the club welcoming Albacete born Andrés García Tébar as their new manager. Among his long line of achievements with Hellín Deportivo, Locar CF, Ciudad de Murcia, Yeclano, Algeciras, UD Eivissa, Mérida UD, Águilas CF, Motril CF, AD Cerro Reyes, CE Hospitalet, UD Puertollano, UD Melilla and CD Tenerife, Tébar has won two promotions to the Third Division; two to Segunda B, four Playoff promotion places to Segunda B and two to Segunda A with Melilla. In 2010-11 he was third in the regular season and fell the playoff stage against Deportivo Alavés. And the manager has wasted no time in reaching

agreements with two formerplayers. Daniel Pérez Moreno (Tonino) and Enrique Espinosa Riquelme (Kike Espinosa) have both re signed for the coming campaign. Tonino came to Orihuela CF last season, from Cartagena while Kike Espinosa joined from Villarobledo in Castile La_Mancha and finished the season as one of the leading scorers.

EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY AT ALENDA 20 members of El Raso GS and three guests travelled to Alenda on 8 August to play our now traditional annual game against our fellow golf society; Claptons. This is not a Society versus Society in the proper sense of a match, but a joining together of the two societies where the best 12 results on both sides decides who scored the most stableford points on the day to win the Claptons Challenge Cup. Big Robin had a feast day on the par 3s but was knocked off a couple to only finish with two NTPs!! He was also pipped by Dave Nicholls (on countback) for the best front 9 with 19 points. Our best guest today was the grandson (aged 17 ) of Stan Low who finished with an astonishing 35 points playing off 6!! Best back today, again on countback, was Tony Wilson just pipping our new Captain, Ken Brett. Third today was Stan Low with a score of 34 points, second was John Fairhurst with 35 points, but the winner with a superb 37 points was Steve Hatt. Traditionally we have followed this event with a joint social evening and this year we retired to Monos Bar on Quesada where we enjoyed a convivial “Hog Roast”. Photograph shows our new Captain with the Cup.

CHARLIE’S LOAN SWITCHED TO ALCORCON

Following the administrative relegation of Real Murcia from Segunda A to Segunda B the season long loan of Elche’s English defender Charlie I'Anson, agreed only last month, has been cancelled. As the club already has it’s reserve team playing at that level (Elche Illicitano) they feel that the player would get no benefit from the move to Murcia so in an effort to ensure that he is able to gain experience in Segunda A his loan has been diverted to the Madrid club AD Alcorcon. I'Anson, who joined Elche from Grimsby Town, is seen as a future first team regular at the club, hence their eagerness to place him in senior football. Last season he played just two games in La Liga, against RCD Espanyol and Granada. At Alcorcon he will join up with former Elche defender Hector Verdes and former manager José Bordalás. Meanwhile the unanimous decision by the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional’s to relegate Real Murcia came as no real surprise. Murcia were warned that the relegation was likely some weeks ago following the club’s inability to come to an agreement with the National Treasury, over repayment of tax debts of approximately 12 million euro. A spokesman for the league says that the club are unable to show themselves financially solvent so are therefore unable to compete at that level. In addition to relegation Real Murcia have also received a €180,303.63 fine due to their financial situation. But Real Murcia’s woes have gifted CD Mirandes reinstatement to Segunda A as the club that finished with the best points tally in the relegation zone at the end of the 2013/14 season.
