COUNCIL FINALLY TO PULL DOWN ILLEGAL CABO ROIG BARRIER

Tel: 96 673 0057

The acting mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata of the PSOE, who also holds the competencies for Town Planning, has announced this week that the final stage of recovering land in Cabo Roig has now been reached. The waterfront stretch of land is located on the Bellavista 1 urbanisation, between Cabo Roig and Aguamarina. It was illegally fenced off by the residents of the urbanisation decades ago, and has since been a battle for many residents and visitors who have been trying to claim it back.

In May of last year, Zapata and his department announced that they had begun the official legal proceedings to regain the land, thus allowing the town hall to restore public access through the coastal walkway. The announcement was praised by many, after years of their complaints seemingly being ignored, but there has been no further apparent action since. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, explained that the process undertaken by the town hall was a necessary legal route, which therefore had to proceed through the courts and the correct administrative procedure for allowing both sides of the case to be heard, in order to justify taking the land back. Now, following that process, the final stage is complete, which allows the town hall to remove the architectural elements of the obstruction, the wall and the gates that have closed off the public land, to end the private claim of part of the promenade and the beach, which the residents have staked claim to as private land. However, those who illegally took or lay claim to the land still have a short period to carry out the restorative work themselves, a period of around 2 weeks, and so it is not likely that the town hall will commence the demolition until after the summer period, but Zapata states that the action will be taken, as soon as it is appropriate, to allow the land to return to the purpose it was designated. The Leader has been instrumental in this campaign since day one, raising the matter on behalf of residents with every council team that has been in power, from the time of the PP rule, through the coalition government and every councillor who held the position of responsibility for the coast. In 2010, we covered the story in considerable detail, reporting on a complaint raised by Bob Houliston´s CLARO political group who criticized the “photo opportuni-

ties for Mayoress Monica Lorente”, without taking any action against these residents to regain the land. As the PP lost power in the last municipal elections, it was in the manifesto of the group who became the tri-party coalition that replaced the Lorente government, with Bob Houliston being given the post of councillor for the coast, but still no action was apparently taken. In early 2013 we also reported on the praise given to repairs of the beach under the manage-

ment of Pedro Mancebo, who took over the role from Houliston, but still eluding the matter of the walkway, as we reported, “Questions still remain unanswered however regarding the section of the walkway at the northern end of the paseo illegally blocked off by the residents of the Urbanisation Bellavista 1 in Cabo Roig.” When we last reported this in May of last year, we stated how this is the first time some positive action has been made, returning the land to public owner-

ship and use, rather than permitting a handful of residents, who many consider to be selfish and considered above the law, to effectively steal land that doesn´t belong to them, depriving the rest of the community from access and egress to this part of the coast. Now, the campaign is set to come to an end, thus allowing the public to once again stroll along the Orihuela Costa and enjoy the beautiful views of the Mediterranean deprived them for so long.

The fire was discovered at around 14:30 in a warehouse at kilometre 785 of the motorway, with fire fighters from the Parque del Mar Menor sent to tackle the blaze. The Guardia Civil monitored traffic on the motorway, with vehicles navigating their way through the thick smoke, albeit at a reduced speed, on one of the busiest days on the national motorway network. Assistance was provided by other fire fighters from San Pedro del Pinatar, but it took until 19:20 before the fire was declared under control. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze.

LIONS ON THE HUNT FOR NEW MEMBERS Lion President Iain Bennett announced at the August Club business meeting, that in addition to all the excellent fund raising efforts of the Club, in his third term as Lion President, he would be offering his full support to Membership Director Philip Buckman in his quest to increase the membership of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club. Philip has a number of excellent initiatives planned and Iain asked that all current members of the Club participate fully. By strange coincidence Phil was unable to attend the August meeting due to other commitments but in his absence Iain was delighted to welcome and induct a new and very enthusiastic member to the Club, and looks forward to welcoming more in the near future. New member Tony Mackman has been attending Lions events, meetings and socials for over a year when having fulfilled the Lions requirements to be considered for membership, he was invited to submit an application form. Tony lives in Los Montesinos and among his hobbies includes Golf and Motor Cycling, Tony already has many plans in mind for fund raising and social activities. Membership of Lions is by invitation, but any

member of the public can come along to the monthly Club business meeting on the second Thursday of every month at Hotel Cabo Cervera in La Mata at 1930 hrs, where they will be made most welcome. If you think you have what it takes to be a Lion and are willing to give 2 or 3 hours a month to serve those most in need in the local community, and at the same time instantly increase your circle of friends and social life, then do not hesitate, contact Philip on philip.buckman@btinternet.com or visit www.torreviejacostalions.org for more information.

CONTRADICTIONS OVER PP CORRUPTION STATUS

When Alberto Fabra took over as the fifth President of the Generalitat Valenciana, one of his primary objections was to clean up politics in the region. Creating what he called his “Red Line”, one of the most important elements was his statement that no Partido Popular member who is charged in a corruption case will be allowed to stand to be elected. However, in an interview this week, the vice president of the Generalitat, who is also the President of the province of Alicante, José Císcar, seems to not only be wavering on that claim, he even seems to have contradicted his superior, suggesting that members who have been charged can in fact stand. In an interview about the mayor of Alicante, Sonia Castedo, charged in connection with one of the most famous cases in Spain´s history, the “Caso Brugal”, Císcar

said that the “parameters established” by the President of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra, “must be evaluated at the time of making the electoral lists”. Which would make any claim that Fabra had made in the past as false, as there would only ever be a need to enforce it at the time of the elections. Castedo herself had spoken out in support of gay marriage and abortion recently, contrary to her own group´s feelings, and it had been rumoured that she may be set to form a breakaway political party. Císcar said that the PP has “a multitude of people with different ways of thinking”, but he understands there is no intention to form a new party. Since Mónica Lorente led the PP to their first major defeat in Orihuela at the last elections, Císcar was asked about the situation where nine members of the former PP government are faces charges in one case alone, Císcar stressed that this is a “priority”, but “No one has the slightest doubt that the PP will make the best decisions and the best candidate to win the next election in Orihuela”. Lorente is also facing charges under the “Caso Brugal”. Enforcing his reasoning however, Císcar did point out that “we do not know what the situation will be” when the time comes to make the lists, and preempting that would be like “guessing the end of school-year exam results in March”.

35% OF LOCAL FOREST FIRES CAUSED BY ARSON s Spain’s Emergency Services battled to extinguish at least 10 separate forest fires burning across the country another two fire fighters were killed last week while tackling a wildfire in Torremanzanas, a small village inland from Alicante. According to the Spanish Minister of Agriculture Spain is at exceptionally high risk of fires this summer after suffering its driest winter in 70 years so the news released last week that one in three of all fires is set deliberately is an especially bitter pill to swallow as casualties and deaths are expected to rise even further during the particularly dry months of July and August. In the Alicante region alone, where the temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius in recent days, eight helicopters and six water dropping planes were called in to assist firefighters on the ground to douse the Torremanzanas blaze. The Spanish government said that over 132,300 hectares of land had been consumed by flames this year up to 5 August, with a total of 2,000 different fires, the worst devastation in more than a decade. Human action is by far the most common cause of the fires with the Ministry of Agriculture confirming that 95 percent of all fires start as a direct result of human action, be it accidental, or deliberate. According to information provided by the dirección general de Prevención, Extinción de Incendios y Emergencias de la Conselleria de Governació i Justícia, the official explanation for the first major casualty of the summer in the local area, the Sierra Mariola, which began at dawn on Sunday, is that the fire originated by lightning. This natural cause is behind one in four such blazes that occur in Valencia every year, well below the national figure of 35%. But of the remainder, fire investigators from the same agency says that one in three of all fires suffered in the

VISITORS ON HIGH The Castillo de Santa Barbara in Alicante has had a record July, with 62,000 people visiting the historic attraction. The figure represents an increase of some 7,000 tourists compared to the same month of 2013, an increase of 12.72%. Use of the lift from the beachside to the top of the castle also increased, with 38,920 people paying a nominal fee to travel through the mountain heart, whereas in 2013, there were 29,900 users in the month of July. The current exhibition of Star Wars items, which you do have to pay to visit, has already attracted 28,000 people since it opened in April 11, with 8,000 of them in July alone.

EASY TO SWALLOW The Alicante provincial council has approved grants totalling 176,200 euro, which will go towards improving the quality of drinking water in 56 municipalities. The grants are predominantly aimed at municipalities with fewer than 10,000 residents who have direct control of their water supply and will be offered during 2015.

ENDING VIOLENCE Valencia region, 35%, is caused deliberately while a further 28% of accidents is caused by negligence. The reasons for a further 11% of fires remain unknown or fall under the heading of other causes. The month of July is traditionally the worst for forest fires in Valencia. Last year the region registered no less than 59 such incidents, followed by August and June with 42, and a further 35 in July, when an area of 720 hectares was destroyed. Radiography used in the region to investigate the cause of fires shows that in the case of the province of Alicante, The damage often devastates an area area for years to come.

half of arsonists are traditionally active in two specific areas: the Marina Alta and Marina Baja, two areas which, interestingly, have both been excluded from the controversial forestry work plan launched only recently to encourage work among long-term unemployed by hiring 1,000 people to both create and clear forest fire breaks, clean gutters and improve the wooded environment in order to prevent forest fires With no rain predicted in the region for the coming days, the Spanish State Metrological Agency (AEMET) warns that the risk of suffering fires continues to be high.

Alicante council has announced that the 12th annual conference on dealing with violence towards women will be held on the 19th and 20th of November. Those wishing to attend have until the 31st of October to register, with more information on their website, www.congresoviolenciamujer.com.

GREEN GRANTS The towns of Almoradí, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Dolores, Pilar de la Horadada, Rafal and Redován will all benefite from a share of 502,804.24 euro in grants being offered by the Alicante provincial council, aimed at improving green areas and natural parks in the municipalities. A total of 114,638.20 euro will come to the Vega Baja area, with the rest of the grants going to 37 municipalities around the province.

ORIHUELA CRIME RATE DOWN In the first half of 2014, crime figures in Orihuela have fell by 9.3%, above the average drop of both Alicante and Valencia. The announcement was made by regional government delegate Serafín Castellano, during a visit to the Orihuela Costa. Castellano says that the figure is “very significant”, as now the official Castellano made the crime rate, which announcement whilst visiting measures offences the beach at Barranco Rubio per thousand inhabitants, now stands at 42.2%. That figure ten years ago, in 2004, stood at 88%, whereas it was 47.7% in 2001. Castellano detailed how violent crime is down by 16.4%, robbery with violence and intimidation has dropped by 26.1%, robberies fell by 10.6%, theft of motor vehicles has dropped by 7.3%, whilst drug use has fallen by 7.1%. In a speech, Castellano said, “I think we are on the right track with the decline of criminal offences, it encourages further work on the same line but we must not lower our guard”. Castellano then praised the work of the Guardia Civil, National and Local Police, and thanked them for their efforts. There is currently no further information available on the abandoned construction of a new emergency centre on the Orihuela Costa, which would house the police, ambulance and fire services.

ALL ASHORE A further 4 boats carrying 30 immigrants have landed on the coast of Alicante in the last 7 days bringing the number of arrivals processed by the Red Cross since 2007 to 277. Three of the recent boats arrived in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada, last Friday morning with 30 people on board, 8 of which were minors.

JELLYFISH ALERT

It was almost impossible to travel through Orihuela City by car last Tuesday as firefighters struggled to deal with a fire which had broken out in the kitchens of the Hotel Meliá Tudemir just after the breakfast rush. Difficulty in attending and fighting the fire in the historic quarter was complicated by the narrow town centre streets but being aware only of an outbreak in a central hotel the Provincial Fire Consortium dispatched two fire tenders, a ladder truck and a control vehicle direct to the scene. On arriving at the scene, however, firefighters found only a minor fire so all but one of the tenders was stood down. The fire caused only material dam-

age in the 2nd floor kitchen which it failed to extend beyond, although a spokesman did say that some rooms on the third and fourth floors had suffered smoke damage. Roads in the city centre were closed for about an hour while the fire was dealt with causing major disruption along Calle Ramon Sijé providing access to the Museum and also to the Tuesday market on the Paseo Calvo Sotelo. A spokesman for the hotel suggested that initial investigations into the cause of the fire thought that it was quite probably a malfunctioning electrical appliance.

Beaches at the Mar Menor resorts of Los Urrutias and Punta Brava were invaded by thousands of jellyfish at the weekend making bathing impossible for holidaymakers. Nets would normally stop the invasion offshore, but reports indicate the lead weights which hold them down have been stolen, allowing the jellyfish to reach the beach. Cleaning brigades worked on Saturday and Sunday, but minutes after they finished the jellyfish were back.

GOING DOWN Police in Valencia have arrested an Irishman accused of throwing a suitcase full of cocaine, worth more than €3million, out of his eighth-floor hotel window. A receptionist alerted police after discovering the drugs scattered over an internal patio floor. Police are said to be working on the theory that the man confused noise from other guests with a rival gang trying to steal his drugs after suffering an attack of paranoia.

LOCK OUT Plans from a Valencian businessman to open Spain’s first bondage hotel have been delayed following objections from locals. The hotel, inspired by the book Fifty Shades of Grey and due to include 20 S&M-themed rooms and a dungeon, was preparing to open last week in the village of Vilafranca but was prevented from doing so after its 2,500 inhabitants complained.

UK HIGH According to a survey carried out by the Mail on Sunday British shoppers at Aldi pay nearly double what they would in European outlets of the store. A basket of common groceries, including grapes, milk, chicken and wine, cost £44.92 in London, while the same items cost £23.13 in Marbella, £23.38 in Berlin and £26.64 in Paris. The Mail said the difference in price is all the more surprising because there is no VAT on most foods in Britain, unlike other European countries.

GREEN LIGHT Hundreds of drivers trying to reach La Manga were trapped last weekend by faulty traffic lights on the inappropriately named ‘Vía Rápida’ and on the Gran Via in La Manga itself. A spokesman explained that the problem was related to the computer system which reduced the time the traffic lights were green at cross roads. Traffic queues stretched back several kilometres with delays of many hours.

According to Los Verdes the current calming measures are totally inadequate. Despite promises that the Torrevieja council would look closely at road safety issues along the CV 95 in Los Balcones, according to Los Verdes, they have yet to publish any results of their investigation or to take any action. This might suggest that the nothing has yet been done. As such the Green Party once more called for the mayor to take a close look at the main road which connects Torrevieja with San Miguel de Salinas. Other than a few road calming measures, speed bumps, installed many years ago and worn to render them almost insignificant. The CV95 road has become a real black spot in the area, accidents and near misses are witnessed on an almost daily basis with serious injuries cause to drivers and to pedestrians on a regular basis and the traffic worsens greatly in the summer." All the residents want is improved road safety. They see this as a basic right. "We don't believe the solution is to cross one's arms and wait to see if within two or three years traffic flow is lower," as has been suggested by the town hall, referring to the comple-

tion of the Orihuela-Costa motorway, which will direct traffic away from the CV95. "A dangerous road is always dangerous, regardless of traffic flow. We want to see the placements of additional and better crossings in accordance with the demands of local residents.” Los Verdes say that a huge investment will be absolutely necessary and the work could prove to be quite difficult from a technical point of view, "so the reluctance and ineffectiveness of the municipal government has no justification." So once again the Green Party has repeated its request to the mayor to implement road safety measures along this busy stretch of road as a matter of some urgency However a spokesman for Highways has said that any such request must be signed by the mayor before any road works can be carried out by municipal officers So let's hope we don't have to witness yet another fatal accident or casualty before these necessary changes are made.

art of Orihuela Costa´s beaches were closed off on Monday of last week, when a large crack formed in the Cliffside above the beach at Barranco Rubio. As a twenty metre long and thirty metre deep piece of cliff face was considered unstable, the beach was closed off firstly to assess the damage, then to remove the problematic piece. The local police provided a cordon around the area, with

officers on duty constantly, as numerous bathers chose to ignore the signs blocking access, some walking along the closed beach, others simply moving into the sea to work, presumably believing the water provided a barrier from harm if the cliff were to collapse. Delegate of the government of Valencia, Serafín Castellano, visited the area along with other regional representatives from Valencia, as well as provincial representative from Alicante, and the acting mayor of Orihuela,

Antonio Zapata, along with the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer. Former mayor of the municipality, Mónica Lorente, and former councillor for the coast under her government, José Aniorte, also visited the area, all accompanied by numerous members of the Local Police and Guardia Civil, both ground forces and senior officers. Although the provincial coastal department of Alicante has a budget to cover such emergency repairs as this, according to Castellano, the Valencian government has spent some 355,000 euro this year alone, mostly making areas like this safe, transferring sand, debris removal and demolition, none of which were apparently effective in this case. Meanwhile, Orihuela´s coastal councillor, Martina Scheurer, seized the opportunity to speak with the provincial representative responsible for the coastline, highlighting some of the outstanding issues in Orihuela. The result of those talks is that a meeting will now take place after the summer, to enable the next formal process to seek rectification of the structural problems to be resolved. All the officials present praised the prompt response to the emergency, and the way the closure and cleanup operation was handled, keeping the inconvenience to beachgoers, at the busiest time of year, to a minimum.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Whistling in the Wind Taking a welcome break during a long walk in a magical wooded valley in the heart of the Garajonay Forest in the small Canary Island of La Gomera, I heard a sound that I had often longed to hear. It was the sound of Silbo Gomera, the whistling language of this unique and beautiful island. This whistling language, the Gomeran whistle, is an ancient local language, which once seemed to be dying out, but is now enjoying something of a revival. My attention was drawn to a tiny figure further down the valley. The figure was surrounded by what appeared to be goats. As the figure whistled, more goats joined the assembled group. Clearly, the whistling was designed to attract the goats before they moved on. Suddenly, I heard a second whistling sound. This whistle was of a higher pitch, and sounded urgent; it was immediately answered by the first whistle. Sometimes it sounded bird like, with the response more urgent and determined. I sat and listened to what I realised was a fine example of genuine communication between locals, using the whistle language. Later, I mentioned what I had heard to the barman in the wooden shack that served as a small bar for trekkers. The barman nodded, “Ah yes, that’s Santiago with his goats. He lived in Tenerife for a few months to study, but hated the hectic life so much that he returned home to be with his goats. He was training to be a doctor. That’s his mother calling him home for lunch, I expect.” Until that moment, I had always thought that the whistle language was something that the locals had reintroduced to keep the tourists on the cruise ships and in restaurants entertained. However, as I spoke to

more people on the island, it became clear that the language is very much alive and well, and still used as an effective form of communication. Experts tell me that the whistle language modifies the Spanish language by replacing it with two whistled vowels and four consonants. The whistle is perfectly suited to the landscape of deep valleys and steep ravines, with the sound travelling up to two miles away. In an area where mobile phone signals are either non-existent, or at best unreliable, I can see its advantages. Little is known about the origins of the language, other than when the first European settlers arrived in La Gomera during the 15th Century, the locals who were of North African origin, communicated by whistling. When the Spanish invaded, the locals adapted the whistling language to Spanish. It is therefore likely that the whistle originated from African settlers, where there is evidence of other whistled languages used. Later, a taxi driver recalled the widespread use of the whistle language during troubled times in the 1940s, such as when the mountain caught fire, which it often did. The Guardia Civil would arrive and collect the locals to help put out the fire. Although the council and the mayors were paid to put out the fires, they did not pass on the money to the locals who helped, keeping the money for themselves. In order to avoid the police, the locals would whistle to each other that the police were coming and that they should hide. Members of the Guardia Civil didn't understand whistling and so it was an ideal way of avoiding conscription. Later, I heard from an old man who told me that learning to whistle wasn't a matter of pleasure or a hobby, but was a social and practical obligation. If you didn't know the language, you would have to walk to give a message, which was not practical in an area of mountains and ravines, and with few roads and no telephones. In the 1950s, the use of the language began to decline due to economic problems that forced most of the whistlers to emigrate, often to South America or to the larger neighbouring islands. Thanks to European Union funding, the road network was developed, and phones became popular, which made the whistling language almost obsolete.

In the 1990s, there was a major effort to revive the language, which was partly due to making it a compulsory subject in Gomeran primary schools. A few years ago, it used to be true that the language was mostly heard in schools, as well as in restaurants that provide whistling demonstrations for tourists. However, judging from my experiences in the wooded valley, as well as a few days later on a building site where I could hear the same piercing whistle being used by construction workers, I realised that this strange and mystical language has entered a period of serious revival. SUPPORT FOR CALA MOSCA REVIVED the Orihuela town hall on the 12th of August, to be forwarded to the regional government of Valencia. According to C.L.A.R.O., the Petition objections relate principally to the fact that the developer will not reduce the volume of building proposed, with plans to construct 1,500 new flats and houses, putting two endangered species which live at Cala Mosca at risk. “Instead of building houses where the two species are at present concentrated, the developer’s plans propose, nonsensically, to locate in these areas, gardens, play areas and car parks which will mean the two species would be exposed to the maximum physical public presence and therefore danger”. In addition, an environmental protection group has also now got behind the campaign, Ecologistes en Acció, claiming that the site is “the only ground of the town shoreline that is not urbanized and has great environmental and landscape values”. Collecting Signatures Signatures along In particular, the ecology group claim that the front front “there is an erroneous assessment of the impacts of the development project on populations of threatened flora and fauna”, the plant known as Heliantemum caput-felis and the snail called mauretanica Tudorella, and have stated that “the population of Heliantemum is one of the best preserved and largest number of specimens, together with those in the micro reserve at La Glea. They also confirm the findings of the C.L.A.R.O. group, stating that the plan to design parks and recreation areas around the location of the endangered species would be “insufficient or contradictory” in securing the preservation of the environmental elements. The location of pedestrian paths, recreational areas or coastal lookouts has also been called into question, as, according to the environmentalists, they would be on land

When the announcement was made that environmental objections against the proposed revised plans to build on Cala Mosca on the Orihuela Costa was made, there was concern that after years of fighting for its status as the last green area of coastline in Orihuela, interest may have been waning. However, that was clearly not the case, as even more people have now joined the campaign and want to have their say about protecting the unique environment. In a statement this week, the C.L.A.R.O. political group, who have been leading the fight for many years, stated that in a two week period they had received over 1,800 signatures.”This is a remarkable achievement considering that many of the activists who would normally help collect signatures were away on holiday”, read the statement, announcing that their formal objections had been handed in to

“that is home to these two protected species and will affect their habitats. The ecologists have also identified another potentially crucial flaw in the plans, that of a pathway for use by livestock which crosses the site parallel to the coast, a road which is protected by historic laws and “legally cannot be integratCerdan Cerdan and Houliston ed into the surface of the secat the Town Town Hall tor”, although the Environmental Impact Study presented by the plan “ignores the existence of the cattle route”. The eco group therefore consider that the plans would fall foul of the law, based on the points raised, and therefore must be considered as unacceptable on the basis of environmental protection, and must be modified for compliance with the “legal regulations in force”, and building still blocked until “these deficiencies are overcome”. It is still worth remembering that, as C.L.A.R.O. explain, in the face of these objections and similar objections which are believed to have been lodged with the Valencia authorities by the local government of Orihuela, there is good reason to hope that the developer will be obliged to amend his plans and reduce and relocate projected buildings in order to afford more environmental protection to Cala Mosca. The fact that the fate of Cala Mosca has been placed on the agenda of the European Parliament as a result of previous C.L.A.R.O. initiatives, means that the Valencian authorities will have to be very careful not to approve plans which could violate European environmental legislation.Meanwhile, should the objections be ignored and the plans approved, it is still not the end of the story, as the next stage would look at elements of urban planning and location, all of which can still be objected to, if the project does ever get that far.

EVENT CANCELLATIONS The much desired return of the fisherman´s market to Campoamor last week was been cancelled, due to an administrative issue with the required paperwork to enable the event to take place on the municipal land. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, explained how it is of prime importance to ensure that all paperwork is up to date before allowing permission for an event like this, partly to make sure that the event is correctly organized, although it could also be partly to avoid criticism from opposition groups looking to find the most minor of faults. Similarly, the appearance of The Kids Band in Torrevieja´s Eras de la Sal on Thursday was also cancelled, but this was due to “technical” reasons. Ticket holders for this event can get a refund at the point of sale.

THE HISTORY OF SAN MIGU EL San Miguel de Salinas History, Recollections, Customs & Facts. Peter Little and David Hardy, long time residents of San Miguel de Salinas, have published a book on the history of the village, entitled History, Recollections, Customs & Facts. For over a decade they have researched and published much information about the history of San Miguel de Salinas particularly because they both have an interest in local social history. The book is a fascinating compilation of all the best bits which they believe will give the reader, both residents and visitors alike, information about the pueblo that is often difficult to find. Peter and David believe it is also a matter of appreciating San Miguel, having a greater understanding of it and promoting it as the special place it is. Many Sanmigueleros have helped them and are all fully credited. Also acknowledged, by some Sanmigueleros themselves, is the fact that the authors probably know more, through their archive research, than many of them. So, if you are interested in reading the earliest accounts about this village, discovering about Los Sartenazos, banned frying pan fights in the campo, apodos and chanes, San Miguel bank notes, even church

A LIGHT PUNISHMENT

It is doubtful that a single driver on the roads has never been dazzled by the headlights from an oncom-

ing car, sometimes through a mechanical fault, but more often due to driver error, perhaps leaving the lights on full beam without paying enough attention to realise, but with the potential to cause accidents as a “blinded” driver´s eyes adjust, Chinese traffic cops have come up with a unique punishment. Traffic police in the city of Shenzhen, southeast of the Guangdong Province, deal with drivers who risk other road users by means of a tortuous ordeal of having to sit in the road in front of their patrol car, whilst the offi-

cer shines their headlights into the eyes of the illuminated driver, for a period of five minutes. The police say that the punishment serves to remind drivers of the risk of not adjusting their headlights, but it still doesn´t mean they won´t be fined. In addition to the educational enlightenment, drivers are still fined 300 Yuan, the equivalent of around 40 euro, for the privilege. Having faced some criticism, the traffic police have responded saying that, “in general the vast majority of people approved the initiative”, as the result is more people have a better idea of the consequences of their actions. However, with headlight technology improving all the time, with new anti-dazzle headlights being fitted to some models in the higher end range, the physical cause of the torture may soon be a thing of the past, but for now, we all have a duty to be aware of our own actions whilst using the road network.

TRAFFICO CAMPAIGN AGAINST SPEEDING THIS WEEK

As last weekend saw perhaps the busiest anticipated number of vehicle movements for the summer season, with approximately 2,790,000 journeys in the Valencia region alone, Alicante saw a total of 1,100,000 movements between Thursday and Sunday. Despite having a busy enough weekend already, now, as the height of summer starts to ease, the Guardia Civil are embarking on their latest campaign for road safety throughout this coming week, with a main clampdown on speeding. Between the 18th and the 24th of August, traffic cops will be out in force, with a primary focus on those who break the law on main roads, the location of the majority of fatal crashes where speed is a contributing factor. All Pegasus equipped helicopters are likely to be taking to the air, and mobile radar traps will be located in strategic locations around the country. Inappropriate speed was present in 22% of fatal accidents. Speed ??is one of the main factors that results in accidents with the worst consequences. One in four deaths in road accidents is the result of speeding. Last year 1.2 million drivers were detected speeding circulating. The traffic department already has

four Pegasus radars in service, which will also operate during every summer weekend, with a fifth due to be launched soon. In 2013, 1,680 people died on the roads of Spain, 223 less than the previous year, a decrease of 12%. The rate of deaths per million inhabitants is 36 in Spain, well below the European average is 52. Almost 8 out of every 10 fatalities occur on conventional roads. Of those people who were killed in crashes, 171 were not wearing a seatbelt, and 4 of them were children not wearing any child restraint system. Although this weekend may have been considered one of the busiest, it also marked the start of the return operation, when domestic tourists go back to their inland homes. However, the main “Operacíon Retorno” takes place between the 29th and 31st of August. The next major campaign by the Guardia Civil will focus on seat belts, and will be between the 8th and the 14th of September, also looking at child restraints and the correct use of these lifesaving pieces of equipment. That campaign also coincides with a Europe wide effort by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, so the same rigorous checks can also be expected across the continent. In October, the Guardia Civil will focus on conventional roads, whilst TISPOL will focus on trucks and buses. In November, school buses will be the target of the Guardia Traffico, whereas December will see all authorities focus on drug and alcohol in the run up to the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

NEW SKATE PARK FOR SANTA POLA The new skate park could be open in time for Christmas Work is now underway on a new skate park being built adjacent to the Pabellón Els Xiprerets in Santa Pola. The total budget for the project is 509,575 euros, with a lead time of 19 weeks. Lola Gadea, the councilor responsible for planning said that only a third of the amount is being paid by the City Council. The rest will be provided by regional and national authorities. The project, which falls within the Tourism Competitiveness Plan for Sport, will cover an area of ??4.936,91 square meters on a much larger 16,000 square meter plot which if fully owned by the municipality. This

means that there will be extra space for additional projects should anything suitable be considered in the future. As an add on to the park three rooms will be constructed, all completely soundproofed, which will be managed by the Racó Jove and used as rehearsal rooms by a number of different town bands. There will also be an area for anyone who might want to practice break-dancing. The skate park itself will have an area aimed at beginners and youngsters. There will also be a technical area with ramps and an intermediate circuit with obstacles at different heights, ramps, stairs, curbs and railings all erected at different heights. The company managing the project,Tecopsa, are specialists in this type of public works. The designer and the construction manager were responsible for the construction of many similar facilities in places like San Pedro del Pinatar, so their experience is well established. The second part of the project will include the creation of

CABLE SKI COMES TO TORREVIEJA The waters of Torrevieja have another attraction for the more sporty visitors to the city, with the official opening this week of a “Cable Ski” facility near the harbour. The facility allows for users to practice water skiing, pulled by a cable around a fixed structure, rather than a boat in the open water. Considered both more energy efficient and safer than a boat, the cable operated equipment has been growing in popularity for some times, with places like Benidorm already firmly fixed as a location to practice the sport. The 170 metre long cable covers a ground surface of 300 square metres, in an area of 6,000 square metres. It plans to open every day of the year, although booking may be required during off-peak seasons. The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, visited the facility this week, and explained how “this is a very new water sport facility, of high standard and quality, of which there are few in our country”.

a café as well at the soundproofed rehearsal rooms. Gadea says that this type of sports facility will prove to be a great boost for tourism, "and that many skaters of all ages will come to the venue to practice the sport, from both within and outside the province.

PILOT SCHEME OFFERS FREE WI-FI ON PLAYA DE LEVANTE The Santa Pola project 'Telecable Wifree' will see the provision of a free wi-fi service to users of Levante beach. The installation will mark the completion of the first phase of a project, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Department of Beaches and the local company Telecable, and aims to eventually bring in the free network connection along all of the municipality’s coastline. Councillor Loreto Serrano, said that the proposed initiative will take some years, but after supplying free internet in the center of town, the council have had to slow down the process for legal reasons. Serrano continued, “However we resumed the program with the participation of Telecable, the company awarded the telecommunications contract, and they intend to start the pilot phase of the free wifi on Levante Beach first before they move on to Gran Playa. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Part of the earnings from this year´s Tomatina tomato fight in Buñol will be given to the Sahell association, a group which works with the Indian charity o r g a n i s a t i o n Lokpanchayat, to provide and maintain safe houses for women in India. A campaign has been launched to coincide with the annual fiesta, which aims to highlight the atrocities faced by numerous Indian women. Tickets for the event had been restricted to 20,000, in order to control the number of people who attend the food fight each year. Meanwhile, as the food is thrown around for fun, it might be worth remembering that hunger remains the No.1 cause of death in the world and there are 820 million chronically hungry people in the world, a third of whom live in India. In West Bengal alone, around 100 workers in a single tea plantation have died this year from starvation related deaths.

BLOOD DONATIONS? NO THANK YOU After we reminded everybody about the restrictions in giving blood in Spain, following their recent plea for members of the international community to join in a blood donation drive arranged by Torrevieja Town Hall, we have received numerous letters and emails this week asking to print the article we covered in 2012 regarding the prohibition order in place for UK citizens wishing to donate blood in Spain. In 2012 we confirmed via the British Consulate that for fear of the effects of “Mad Cow” disease, there are considerable restrictions in force for Brits wanting to give blood overseas. British Consul, Paul Rodwell, explained how for fear of Variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease, you are not eligible to donate blood if you spent time either visiting or living in the United Kingdom for a cumulative time of 3 months or more between January 1st, 1980, through to December 31st, 1996. You are also not allowed to donate blood if you have received a transfusion in any country of the UK, which includes England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Island, but also includes the Channel Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man, any time from the 1st January 1980, right up to present day. Mr Rodwell confirmed these facts, stating, “What you refer to is correct, that anyone who lived in the UK between those dates cannot donate blood here in Spain. Confirmation of this can be found on the Spanish Red Cross blood donation website on their FAQ page”, which is www.donarsangre.org/puedo-donar-si/, although the restrictions have now changed and state that you cannot give blood “if you have been in the UK for a continuous period of one year between 1980 and 1996, or if you have received a transfusion in the country”. However, dismissing one of the myths that this situation is only present in Spain, Mr Rodwell continued, “I understand that this is an international rule, not one invented by Spain. Our understanding is that these are American Red Cross eligibility rules and are respected

DIGGING DEEP Archaeologists have discovered what they believe to be a 1,000 year old Islamic burial ground in the town of Alcázar de San Juan in Ciudad Real, which they hope will reveal more information about the Islamic history of the region.

TAKE A LETTER The Spanish Correos has hired a Canadian business transformation expert, in a bid to improve Spain´s postal network. Todd Hooper has previously worked on a modernisation project for retail giant Carrefour, and will bring “extensive” knowledge of the retail arena, particularly in the field of improving customer experience, according to a statement by Correos. The statement from the American website of the International Red Cross is this... In-Depth Discussion of Variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease and Blood Donation In some parts of the world, cattle can get an infectious, fatal brain disease called Mad Cow Disease. In these same locations, humans have started to get a new disease called variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease (vCJD) which is also a fatal brain disease. Scientists believe that vCJD is Mad Cow Disease that has somehow transferred to humans, possibly through the food chain. There is now evidence from a small number of case reports involving patients and laboratory animal studies that vCJD can be transmitted through transfusion. There is no test for vCJD in humans that could be used to screen blood donors and to protect the blood supply. This means that blood programs must take special precautions to keep vCJD out of the blood supply by

avoiding collections from those who have been where this disease is found. So, even blood supplies are running dangerously low in Spain, many of those who are prepared to donate are excluded internationally. The question of risk clearly outweighing the chance of survival, as the fact that “a small number of case reports” have found evidence of risk, it doesn´t offer practical help to the many people who have survived thanks directly to the generous donations of people who provide blood to the medical network each day. When faced with a life or death situation, wouldn´t the majority of people take the chance that the survival rate is far likely to outweigh the risk, but the opportunity is taken away because of the decisions implemented and enforced around the world, led by the American branch of an organisation dedicated to saving life. On the other hand, now you know the facts, you are now able to avoid the inconvenience of waiting around in queues to try to donate, perhaps identifying with the disappointment of prejudice that has dogged the gay community of the UK for years, only to find that your gift of life is not welcome, now simply because you might have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Meanwhile, in correspondence to The Leader from the Mayor of Torrevieja he said ‘From the Town Hall of Torrevieja, we want to thank you for your concern. Signed - Eduardo Dolon.’

GOOD TO TALK Mobile phone operator Orange is reported to be looking to sell around 9,400 of its mobile phone masts in Spain, which experts think could provide 885 million euro in revenue. Orange has been suffering a loss of clients, with the second quarter of the year only bringing them 943 million euro, a drop of 4.7%.

CURTAIN CALL Two out of every five IMAX cinemas in Spain are to close almost immediately, after failing to make a profit since they first opened. The Teatromax cinemas in Madrid and Barcelona will shut their doors permanently, leaving just three in the country at Palma de Mallorca, Valencia and Leganes. Changing domestic technology and an inability for the cinemas to keep up is said to be the reason for the closure. The first IMAX cinema launched in Seville in 1992, only to close its doors in 2005.

GET RID OF THIS PA L M T R E E M E S S What purpose do so many palm trees really serve?

There are far too many trees. Our local councils clearly can’t cope. They provide no shade and for the majority of the year they look untidy. They cause damage to pavements and to roads and their seeds and palm cuttings create a hideous mess. Why don’t we cut 2/3rds of them down?

There have been a number of recent reports citing damage to people and property caused by fallen palm trees that have broken under the weight of their fronds or fruit and whilst we all accept how wonderful they are to look at when correctly pruned many would agree that they actually serve no purpose whatsoever, they provide no shade and they continually drop their seeds. They can also be dangerous, dirty and ugly when left untended or only occasionally maintained and in many areas of the Orihuela Costa this is the situation that many of them are now in. Only a few short years ago the palms would be tended twice a year. They would be treated, pruned and sprayed as they presided majestically over our streets. They looked positively regal as they provided a royal Mediterranean welcome to visitors. But now they have been allowed to become overgrown, there are far too many for the local authorities to manage, they are causing damage to our pavements and to our roads and they create a variety of unnecessary hazards, many of which, for an elderly population, can be extremely difficult to manoevre. In Aguamarina there is a fully mature palm tree situated every 3 metres. Calle Agua, for example, is approximately 300 metres long, but it accommodates approximately 100 trees. This provides the street with almost one tree for every 3 meters of its length. According to local experts, the recommended spacing interval for this type of tree is between 20 and 30ft. In C/Agua therefore, just one of hun-

dreds of similar streets on the Orihuela Costa, there are 50 palm trees too many. If this were to be replicated across the coast the result would be a surplus of many thousands of trees. These are all trees that cost many hundreds of thousands of taxpayers euros to be maintained, much of which could so easily be saved or put to other and better uses. Until recently pruning was carried out twice a year. Now it is rarely more frequently than once, so for rather more than half of every annum the trees, and the streets and avenues that they line, look truly shambolic, so residents can actually get quite excited when they see the arborist, or ‘tree pruner’, arrive for his annual visit. But when they leave, having completed only half the task, it leaves them rather concerned. This was the case last week in Cabo Roig, Aguamarina, La Regia and surrounds, as a gang of twelve, brought in, no doubt at great expense, from Elche, armed with a multitude of equipment including two cherry pickers and two waste trucks spent little or no time in the area pruning just the fronds and branches that were carrying the date seeds. The remaining 2/3rds of the branches, dying and decayed as they still are, were left untouched when, for the sake of just a few seconds more, each of the palms could have been correctly pruned. Now I assume it will cost about the same, or quite probably rather more, to bring in the Elche gang once again, presumably before the end of the year, while these still dangerous, dirty and ugly trees, continue to damage the roads and pavement and their hazards continue to multiply.

ASPETGA talks to kids about pets Lecture to summer schools students at Colegio Hispanidad in Santa Pola Last Friday, representatives of the Pet Owners Association of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant (ASPETGA) spoke to summer school students aged 4-9 at Colegio Hispanidad in Santa Pola about pet ownership telling the children aware that a pet is another member of the family to care for, to respect and to never abandon. Through a presentation based on drawings and photos, ASPETGA President Olatz Mensua, Treasurer Belma Canales and Secretary Rosa Garcia spoke about the responsibilities of having a pet. ASPETGA took the opportunity to explain to the kids that pet adoption was a big decision and spoke to them about the best way to bring an animal into the family as well as the importance of adopting and not buying animals. The children were delighted to interact with Sam, Ellioth, Dora and Sanson, four friendly rescue dogs that accompanied ASPETGA in this talk. The four have been adopted by the ASPETGA members who spoke to the group. Although the focus of lecture was responsible pet ownership, ASPETGA also spoke briefly to the children about the plight of wild animals held in captivity, such as those working in circuses or on display at zoos.

ASPETGA actively works to foster responsible pet ownership and the goal of these speaking engagements is to impart these values to children. ASPETGA volunteers are available to any school in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant interested in scheduling this type of lecture. About ASPETGA The Pet Owners Association of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant (ASPETGA) or Asociación de Propietarios de Mascotas de Santa Pola y Gran Alacant is a nonprofit founded by a group of neighbours including a local veterinarian. ASPETGA works to encourage responsible pet ownership in our community by raising awareness of local regulations regarding pet ownership with a special emphasis on the collection of dog droppings. ASPETGA believes in peaceful coexistence between pet owning and non pet owning residents and works to create specially designated dog parks and beaches. In addition, APSETGA programs events to promote canine socialization and good citizenship, organizes competitions and games as well as charitable and fundraising events. Membership is just € 5 per family per year. To join or for more information, please visit www.aspetga.es or www.facebook.com/APETGA

CRUZ AZUL IS SQUEAKY CLEAN Cruz Azul Murcia was treated to a special event to raise funds by local businesses on Wednesday, 13 August. Clean Me car wash and Airpark Murcia, based on the Oasis Boulevard, got together to raise awareness of the charity by donating 20% of all sales on the day. They were joined by The Mobile Nail Spa and Avalon who also donated to the charity. Businesses from Oasis Boulevard generously donated prizes for the raffle and the prizewinners were: Di – Free car wash at Clean Me Monica - Lunch for two at The Arches Cathie - 20€ voucher from The Mobile Nail Spa Anthea Prentice - A week's bike hire for 2 from the Oasis Centre

Graeme Wilson - Fish and chip meal for 2 from Panaderia Luisines Cake Stuart Smith – A bottle of Cava Victoria Brook - Fruit basket “We’re touched by the generosity of local businesses in what is still a tough economic climate” remarked Lyn Baines, Cruz Azul President. “It was a very hot day and not the best for cleaning and valeting cars, but the guys from Clean Me worked their socks off and did us proud. A huge thank you to Michelle Andrews for organising the event and to all the local businesses who kindly donated raffle prizes to support us.”

Over the last four weeks a group of volunteers has been cleaning the area between the New River and the Old River (La Gola), near to the mouth of the River Segura in Guardamar. The group began their efforts on July 15 collecting all kinds of plastic containers that have been abandoned by visitors to the area, in total, recovering enough to fill 150 large plastic sacks. Councillor Jesus Huertas said that the cleanup will continue during the coming days "with a view to further contributing to the local environment and by educating visitors about the conservation of this

area close to the river. We will ask them to take away and dispose of their waste containers more sensibly. We also want to convey the same message about local environmental issues to the younger element of our society." The workers will be strengthened this week with a patrol of environmental volunteers in the coming days, who will provide this natural area with a much better look Huertas said that “such actions contribute toward a more sensitive environment around a town that advocates green areas and the protection of its natural resources."

UNION DENOUNCES MARITIME PATROL DELAY An association representing more than 500 Guardia Civil officers across Alicante has denounced the delay that the Maritime Protection department took to attend to the reported sightings of immigrants in small boats off the coast of Torrevieja and Orihuela. The complaint was raised after two boats were spotted off the coast at around 2:00 in the morning on Saturday, but the Maritime Patrol vessel was in Altea monitoring a firework display out at sea. It subsequently took them 3 hours to move to the Torrevieja area and attend the incoming boats. In less than a week, four boats with 30 immigrants on board have landed on the Alicante coastline, bringing the total number attended by the Cruz Roja to 277 since 2007. There was an influx of people in 2007, but then the coastline around Torrevieja and Orihuela, as well as Pilar de la Horadada, was largely boat free until this recent wave. The group are requesting the maritime patrols be used “correctly” and they do not feel that a firework display was an important use of the

HAVE YOU BEEN THE VICTIM OF A ROBBERY

Victim of a robbery? The Guardia Civil has a website where you can search for stolen goods that they have recovered during their raids. Through the site you can enter search criteria relating to the items stolen which can be matched those recovered by the Guardia Civil in different robberies across the region. The images are organized by both the name of "police operation" and also by category such as: jewelry, watches, tools, etc. If you can prove ownership of any item shown on the Guardia site you can have it back in your possession in only a matter of days. Oficina de Atención al Ciudadano de la Guardia Civil, (Citizens Advice Bureau Civil Guard): vessel which is designated to patrol the waters for the protection of everybody in them. They also praised the region of Murcia for creating a fixed patrol in the San Javier area, which they feel could be extended to the south of Alicante to ensure protection is maintained.

SPAIN TAKES DELIVERY OF NEW SAR HELICOPTER Spain has taken delivery of the first of a new breed of search and rescue helicopters, the EC255, which was delivered to the Airbus facility in Albacete. Destined to be used by the state maritime rescue section, SASEMAR, the first helicopter will be based on the Galician coast, based in the La Coruña operations centre at Alvedro. The helicopter replaces an iconic Sikorsky S-61N, which is nearing 40 years of age, and will come into service in January 2015. Between now and the first missions, the flight and ground crew will be taking part in training exercises to familiarise themselves, both in terms of flying and manoeuvring the helicopter, including through adverse weather conditions, and how to ensure the fastest response time to emergencies once called upon.

SPAIN ROBBED OF T20 VICTORY In 2013 the Spanish over 40’s cricket team were invited to travel to Copenhagen and play in a T20 (20 over) tournament alongside teams from Denmark, Holland and Great Britain, all participating in their 42nd annual ‘Triangular Tournament’. Spain were invited to play all three teams in 40 over matches and they performed better than anyone could have imagined; narrowly missing out on the 20 over tournament (beaten just once by a young Swedish side) and unbeaten in all of their 40 over games. Their first challenge was to get to the venue which proved to be a task in itself! The 9 members traveling from Alicante had planned to reach the Nieuwerkerk Hotel in Rotterdam by 23.00, allowing them to meet up with members of the squad travelling from Ibiza and Lanzarote for some tactical discussions in the bar!!! However a 3 hour flight delay, Rotterdam airport closing at midnight, a diversion to Amsterdam airport followed by bus ride to Rotterdam made this impossible and a very tired team made it to their hotel a few hours before breakfast was to be served!!!! Amazingly, 6 hours later all members of the Spanish team arrived at the magnificent ‘Sparta Ground’, a sports complex with 2 beautiful cricket pitches surrounded by breathtaking beautiful scenery. The Mayor of Rotterdam gave the opening

ceremony speech, then it was time to play cricket! The first competitive game, Spain vs Dansk XL. The Danish side won the toss and elected to bat first. Spain showed their strenth in the field restricting Dansk XL to152 of their 45 overs. Spain started badly, however the boys from Lanzarote, David Smith (72) and Neil French (22) put the game in the bag for the Spanish team. Tuesday was T20 day, Spain had 2 games to play, they lost the first against The Forty Club so the 2nd match of the day was a must win affair against Dansk XL if they were to stay in the competition. This time Spain fielded first, and restricted the Danish side to 87 of their 20 overs. Spain’s openers D Williams (22) and D Smith (33) made the perfect start reaching 50 in quick time with the lads from Ibiza Martin Makepeace and Robin Parmenter bringing the well earned victory home. Spain then met SGS, another must win match. On a very hot day the Spanish put SGS into bat and were made to sweat it out in the Sun as the Dutch Openers piled on the runs, M Muis (108). At 190 for 1 after 30 overs, it looked like the Dutch were going to pass 300 before the end of their innings but Spain’s fighting attitude paid off with a tremendous fight back, wickets started to fall the Dutch finished with a score of 253 of their 45 overs.

CREDITABLE THIRD PLACE FINISH FOR ROJALES NETBALL AGAINST UK OPPOSITION Rojales Netball Club competed in Gran Alacant last weekend against four top teams from England. They played some great netball despite not having done any training for six weeks. Their attack of Sam and Carly were spot on with their shooting whilst at the other end of the court there was a solid defensive display by Claire and Tracey; and the centre court players of Ronnie, Donna, Tracy and Lisa formed a strong unit linking

play between both circles. What a great team effort resulting in Rojales finishing third, they should feel very proud of themselves! Their new season starts on Tuesday, 9 September and they are looking for new players to enhance the Club. For further details contact Tracey on 679539995 or email traceyburton@hotmail.co.uk

CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS Spain went about their task fighting and were unfortunate to lose their Skipper Geoff Evans to a dodgy looking LBW decision just as he was settling in, however, D Williams (81) did not disappoint and took the fight to the Dutch, but Spain kept on losing wickets at key stages with G Serventer (4-45) bowling very well. Neil French (22) was hitting the ball well but when he was run out after some confusion with fellow batsman John Braithwaite, it was all out for 193. Thursday was a big day for the Spanish team, the final day of T20 andsecond in the table behind their opponents SGS, the team that blew them away with the bat the day before. Fired up for this one the Spanish were to bat first and John Thornton (68No) and N Choudury (41) gave the Spanish a perfect start, SGS had little reply as the Spanish bowlers ground them down, Neil French being the pick of the bowlers. M Igelse (51No) did bat through the SGS innings but as they fell further behind the run rate you could see the Spanish team starting to celebrate a famous win. The Dutch team finished on 118, well short of the target set. The Spanish players were victorious, but no….. The Dutch organizers had decided that there should be an outright winner, and to the annoyance and disappointment of the Spanish team, decided to have a bowl out. This is when the 11 players of each team take it in turn to bowl at stumps, After all 11 had been, it was just 1-1, so it went to sudden death, and this is when the Spanish hearts sank, SGS won, a bitter tasting victory it was too. The T20 cup was presented at a Gala dinner and the Spanish team showed their true spirit and professionalism by not allowing the earlier events of the day to get to them. Friday was the final day of the tournament and the

last of their Four Nations 45 over match. The game was against the tournament favorites, The Forty Club. Made to bat first Spain struggled right from the startand were bowled out for just 105. The Forty Club knocked off this total in no time and added the first Four Nations Cup to the Triangular Trophy they had already won. It was a great tour for the Spanish team, there will be a lot to learn from it before they go to the UK in 2015. They can be proud of their achievements, they played a very high standard of competitive cricket, making many friends, well done to our lads, the players, umpires and scorer. Before traveling home the team had some player awards to give out, proudly sponsored by ‘SJ&A Printers’ and ‘Bar Restaurant Ricos’ both in Torrevieja. Best Batsman – David Smith Best Bowler – Graham Cooper Best Performance – David Williams (81) Players Player – John Braithwaite Players: Goerge Wambeek. Geoff Evens. Dave Smith. David Williams. Graham Cooper. Neil French. John Braithwaite. Robin Parmenter. Martin Makepeace. Neil McKinstry. Bob Nix. Navdeem Choudury. Umpires and Scorer - Dave Riley, Adnan Khan and Harmit Phull The Spanish team would like to thank Cricket Espana, The Property Shop in Ibiza, Pensions People.com the only company offering alternative pension solutions to Expats in Lanzarote, SJandA Digital Services, Bar Ricos both in Torrevieja and all their sponsors for their continued support. Anyone interested in cricket or sponsoring the Spanish over 40 team Tour 2015 when they hope to bring perhaps both of T20 or 45overs Four Nations Cups to Spain, please see the website.

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB NEWS by Brian Hewett Saturday Roll-up. Our Saturday high rollers are keeping their heads above water, even in this hot weather, with 18 bowlers on the 9th. Jim Reeves walked off with the top prize with a handsome score of 28. The Beer fell nicely into Big Chris Dewars hands with a brilliantly fashioned 27 (he told me to say that); a score shared by Dave Giddings. Our veteran member, Ken Toy closed the top quartet with a 26. Sad to say the Wonderful Wooden Spoon was awarded to Joan Hunter. As always our Saturday rollup was sponsored by TOTUS & DRAGON Insurance Thursday Nite Friendly. Greenlands was at home this week and it obviously pays to plan some practice sessions because we came away with a win, 8 points to 6. We shared the rinks but Greenlands shaved the overall shots by 102 to 90. I reckon if we had ACTUALLY practiced we might have taken I or 2 more rinks!!!! Our aces this week were: Rink 6 Sheila Hewett, Jim McLean & Skip

Steve Cantley; Rink 8, Margaret Dewar, Charles Langlois & Skip Chris Dewar and finally; Rink 7, Helen (handcuffs, don't ask!) Langlois, yours truly and Skip Averil Toozer. A really great night played mostly in the cool cool of the evening, thank you Quesada. Notices No 1. TMGS MATCH REPORT, LA FINCA 13TH AUGUST 2014. On this day in history in 1888, the pioneer of television, John Logie Baird was born and Darren Hancock, playing off of 6, hit 40 points. The course itself is in splendid condition and although the greens were a little on the slow side, they ran true. All 4 of the NTP’s, were claimed and the recipients of a sleeve of TMGS logo balls went to John Eyre, Chris Bellman, Roger Nilsen and Derek Sullivan. It seems that the recent guests from the Hub bar (Golf Society) are in need of a handicap review, especially when they took the Visitors prizes as a 3 ball. Congratulations go to G Gates who came 3rd with 35 points, D Holmes with 36 points and the winner of the Guests, Dean Leatherby with a nice 38 points. The Silver Division players had a nice day and Peter Wells took 4th spot with 31 points. Ian Parkinson scored 33 points for 3rd, but Roger Nilsen’s 34 saw him taking 2nd place and Alex Goslan’s 35 was enough to take the 1st prize of a free round of golf. The Gold Division scores were a little better and it needed a 32 point haul for Vernon Brown to take 4th spot. Vice-Captain John Eyre saw his 36 points only good enough for 3rd place as Derek Sullivan scored 37 points to take the runners-up slot. This score would normally take the bacon home, but then here comes Darren Hancock, playing off of 6 scoring a wonderful 40 points. Enjoy the new handicap Daz! The photo is of the Gold category winners

The “Two’s Pot” was won by John Eyre and Richard Wale. Our next game, Wednesday 20th August 2014 see’s us at Font del Llop Golf so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604. CLAPTONS GOLF SOCIETY INTER-SOCIETY CUP v EL RASO GS This was a long awaited annual cup match. After much controversy the two captains tee’ed off on the 1st tee at 10am. The sun was already high in the sky and beaming down on us. The course, as usual, looked in prime condition and I am sure due to much hard work by the greenkeeping staff. Well done. This year we had a first and tenth tee start so we had both lots of members going in two directions. We gradually got to the last tee at 10.40am with the El Raso ladies bringing up the rear. The sun got hotter and hotter and the air thinner and thinner, but nevertheless the day saw us bringing in some really good scores, but unfortunately this year we had to give the cup back to El Raso by a paltry five points. Better luck next year everybody. Everybody having finished and the cards collected we made our way back to make ourselves

ready for the evening’s festivities at the Club House, Mono’s Bar and Restaurant, where we would be accompanied by our partners. The main part of the evening was by the way of a hog roast supplied by Dave and Jenny of La Marina, and what a hog roast it was. With over 100 guests it took quite a long while for the winding queue to finally diminish, well done Dave and also many thanks to his helper chef Bernie. Hog Roast over we then proceeded with the prize giving and the results are as follows. The main feature of the day being the cup match ended with a win for El Raso 376 points to Clapton’s 371. By Mike Chapman We started the week off with a best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the par 5's. There were only 3 teams of 4 braving the high temperatures and the team coming out on top with a respectable 98 pts were Lindsay Forbes, Norman Page, Rachel Leckey and Ervine (guest) edging out Alan Douglas, Brian Dent, Brian Green and Roger Tunstall with 97 pts. There were a few more players for our weekly stableford competition on Wednesday on what was probably the hottest day of the year. The best score of the day was a magnificent 40 pts from the returning Yvonne Phipps to win Category 2 with the ever reliable Lindsay Forbes scoring 38 pts to take top spot in Category 1. The full results of the day were as follows: Cat 1. 1st. Lindsay Forbes 38 pts 2nd. Olga Douglas 36 pts (c/b) 3rd. Doug Wright 36 pts Cat 2. 1st. Yonne Phipps 40 pts 2nd. Joyce McClusky 34 pts 3rd. Rod Bryant 32 pts 2's Club: Rod Bryant, John Collins, Doug Wright and Ervine (Guest) On Friday we played a 6x6x6 with one score counting on the first six holes, two on the second six and three on the third six holes. There was one team who finished head and shoulders above the rest with an excellent score of 90 pts with the second placed team having only 78 pts. The winning team were Joyce and Allen McClusky, Brian Townend and Olga Douglas.

By Steve Lawrence. Thursday 14th August on a very humid and windy day, 22 members and guests from the Cafe Uno Golf Society turned out to play Golf at Vistabella. The course was in great condition as always, and had it not been for the gusty windy weather, i am sure we would have seen a greater number of players coming home with a some higher scores. Having said that we did have some players who managed a respectable score card. The format was Stableford, also we had a mystery pairs draw at the end. The score cards were shuffled and pairs of cards were drawn to reveal which pair of cards had the highest combined score. No names mentioned, but on the 1st tee one of our regular players asked who his mystery partner was? The days results were as follows:1st Lee George - 37pts. 2nd John Saunders - 32pts. c/b. 3rd Steve Ashurst - 32pts. Best front 9 - Ali Rich 18pts. Best back 9 - Steve Lawrence 17pts. NTP - nobody. Nearest the pin in 2 - Steve Ashurst. Winning mystery pair - Steve Ashurst and Peter Smith with 58pts. No 2 ball winner this week so prize money rolls over. Well done to all our prize winners and thanks for a good day. Next week we are at Alenda golf , Thursday August 21st, the last of the years pre-booked games. 1st tee 10am. A new golf calender sheet is currently being drawn up for the year and will be available soon. Thanks to Cafe Uno for the after game buffet.

‘Mike Probert talks Golf

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Where does all the water come from?? When the UK used to have something resembling a hot summer droughts and hose pipes followed very quickly, now in this region of Spain we have had but a small handful of rain since last summer and yet the golf courses remain beautifully green. Now much of this is due to the fact that Bermuda grass needs the minimum amount of water and other than turning yellow/brown in winter months always looks a treat on the eye. So with the total lack of rain fall just where does the water come from to keep the courses looking so good? The answer is simple in that the golf courses PAY huge amounts of money to obtain the water that not only continues to keep the courses green BUT more importantly alive. I spoke recently to a resident of the Mosa Trajectum and he informs me that in the 18 months since the course closed it has now returned totally to the original DESERT state. Now just why do I raise this issue at this time? To be blunt you now see a host of extremely low level green fee prices and yet the courses remain very quiet BUT the owners and managers have to pay upwards of €250K per annum for water to keep the courses alive and looking good. Reading some of the local golf society reports it is amazing how many complain when paying little more than €30 with a buggy that the greens were long and slow. This is just one of the ways in which the courses can protect the greens from the blisteringly sun. You will recall a few years ago that the water pumps failed over a weekend at La Peraleja and they lost the greens for months and Bonalba had to purchase some additional water supplies which were contaminated with salt and again lost the greens for months. I think that all golfers living and playing here in Spain should be aware of the effort applied by the course owners to keep the courses in good condition, despite the weather elements while still trying to give us the prices and playing conditions that we expect. ‘True Cost of NO Entertainment on the Costa Blanca – Update’ In previous weeks we have raised the issue of Local Police officers raiding bars and stopping ‘live’ music performances which in turn is impacting on golfers re-turning to the area in future years. The latest report takes some believing but a bar in Dona Pepa had a ‘hypnotist’ with an audience of 120 people on the terrace and the police again came calling and made them stop the performance. Now with 25% un-employment and record debt levels in Spain I can think of a few police commissioners and politicians who need hypnotising to make them see sense! We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY AT VISTABELLA It was a welcome return to Vistabella and although the turnout was not to our normal numbers, the reason is probably the heat, as it has been 30+ for some time now. There was the customary sharp intake of breath when Medal play was mention but it has to be said, the course is in very good condition and very playable, with greens that held your shots and putts (when hit properly), but poor Rocket was a dyslectic golfer – he couldn’t read the greens, The course must have been good with some of the scores that came in. Rodney Smith had a solid round with a one under Par, with a level par 73 was Les Yates who is playing some good golf. In the Silver category Malcolm Woods was only 2 overfPar and in second place went to the consistent Geoff Wild and his new clubs. Only 1 green was hit in the nearest the pins and that was Ron Swift on the 8th hole. The longest drive was a monster by Dave Bowers who also took the Guest prize There were two Pairs Semi Final matches being played and the results were, Rodney Smith/Ivie Davies beat Arthur Williams/ Ron Nicholson - 6 and 5. Geoff Wild/Les Yates beat Ron Chambers/Ken Hopkins – 4 and 3. So the final will be a close one to call between Rodney Smith/Ivie Daves Vs. RUBY’S GOLF SOCIETY AT VISTABELLA Vistabella was our destination for the hot August fun day. The course was in excellent condition and the temperature was high but Mr Ivie Davies managed the course and his golf to take Gold division winner, Silver division was Buck Taylor who cleaned up with Ivie to win the buggie pairs competition. Other winners on the day were best front nine Ivie, best back nine Marc Doherty. Nearest the pins were Buck Taylor and Nigel Wright, nearest the pin in two was Ivie (again). Back at Ruby's bar where much needed refreshments were taken the football card was won by Brian Wilson. Overall winner on the day though had to be Theresa Wright where she walked off the course with a new set of clubs and pink bag. Our next outing is on 22nd August at La Serena followed by a barbecue back at Ruby's, it is a sponsored charity event in aid of AECC, we have many sponsors already, but anyone wishing to sponsor or donate to this great cause please contact us at rubygolf@yahoo.co.uk.

BENIJOFAR GOLF SOCIETY

By John O'Brien This week we held a Yellow Ball, Stableford comp, playing in teams of three each player takes a turn with the yellow ball, the good news is that your Stableford points are doubled with the yellow ball, the bad news is that many players have an incredible ability to mess it up when they have the yellow ball. With 15 players, we had 5 teams of 3 players. I knew from the start that I couldn't win this week as one of my team was Gordon Wayne and he only plays to get in second position so that he can get the Brandy and this week was no exception, well done Gordon... None of us know how he does it, he can't possibly know the other teams scores, but he still manages it..... The results this week: Nearest the pin hole 2: Ben Gadd, Hole 6: Martin Rickman 3rd place Dave Smith, Martin Rickman & Mel Hope, with a combined score of 130 pts 2nd place John O'Brien, Gordon Wayne & George Stanhope, with a combined score of 133 pts 1st place Ray Housley, Lawrence Wanty & Rod Loveday with a combined score of 136 pts The next competition is on Tuesday 19th August at El Plantio. Put your name on the list in the club house by Sunday, if you would like to play. Be sure to be there well before 9am on Tuesday. The Society meets on Tuesdays, Fridays & Sundays to play on El Plantio 2 par 3 course, new members are welcome to join the Society, where a special membership price is available for anyone who joins. Visitors are always welcome, contact Ian Henderson, Tel: 966716616 or Mob: 636116230

At Roda 13-8-14 The August outing was a short trip up the motorway to Roda Golf on what must have been one of the hottest days of the year so far. We had one player who never finished his round due to the heat and a few others i suspect who wished they had stayed by their pools instead of chasing a little white ball around in the blistering midday sun ! There were a few players who seemed unaffected by the heat but the majority seemed to have a good first nine followed by a rapid dropoff for the second nine. The course itself was in fairly good condition with the greens running fairly true if you read them correctly. Nearest The pin winners were Mick Morley on hole seven and Andy Trefry on holes eleven and thirteen. Nobody managed to hit the green on the second hole which was a two hundred yard drive on the day. Winner of the par three competition was Mick Morley with eight points winning by virtue of having a lower handicap. The par five event was won by the society captain John Fullicks with nine points. In third place was John Fullicks with thirty four points and losing out to his son Bob who came in with thirty six points. Winner on the day was yet again last years captain Andy Trefry with a fine thirty eight points and yet another handicap reduction to boot. The winners received meal vouchers for the new Indian restaurant by the golf course and kindly sponsored by John Sanchez. Next months outing is the 17th September at La Serena. FRIENDLIES OVER - NOW FOR THE REAL STUFF from first Regueres, then Toni. In the 2nd half, Toni completed his brace, as Albatera secured a 3-1 victory. Another 48 hours had elapsed before Galliana's boys were on the road again, this time to play Cartagena FC at Gomez Meseguer Stadium. A cross from Cristian Sanchez, enabled Rafa Gomez to open the scoring on 40 mins. Steve Ekedi, on as a 2nd half sub, doubled the lead, before Nadal pulled a goal back for the hosts. A 30 yard screamer by super Stevie E gave Torry a 3-1 advantage they managed to cling onto, and were rewarded with a

presentation of the VII Gines Pagan trophy. Torry start div 3 season 14/15 on Sun 24 Aug, with a home fixture against SAGUNTINO, and finish also at home, to ALZIRA on 17 May. The first away match is at UTIEL on 31 Aug. Other games of note are against local rivals ORIHUELA, at home on 28 Sep, and away on 15 feb. On Tues 12 Aug, ko 7.30 pm, div 2b side La Hoya Lorca visit Vicente Garcia Stadium, for another pre season friendly. Admission is only 5 euros.

SUPER SUB EKEDI SCORES AGAIN CD TORREVIEJA - 1 LA HOYA LORCA - 2 On as a late 2nd half substitute, trialist Steve Ekedi scored his 2nd goal in as many matches, as Torry went down by the odd goal against div 2b side La Hoya Lorca. With his side already trailing 2-0, the Cameroonian trialist (whose last club was CD Barko of the Galician Pref div) rose majestically to head home a free kick on 82 mins, giving the scoreline a more realistic appearance. Although Torry more than

matched their opponents in the 1st half, they only had an Eddy back header on 40 mins which just looped over the bar, as the sole serious attempt on goal. Likewise Lorca, who should have scored seconds before the interval, but when faced with a 1 on 1 situation, Torry keeper Oscar calmly blocked a Hernandez goalbound effort. Minutes into the new half, Oscar again came to his sides rescue, pulling off a superb point blank save. A mix up in defence allowed Sergio Ortiz to lash home a loose ball, giving the vis-

itors the lead on 57 mins. Seven mins later, Pau doubled the advantage when he found space on the left, then stroked home the ball just inside the far post. It could have been worse for Torry, but the impressive Oscar did well to deny Hugo's powerful free kick, moments before Ekedi's consolation goal. Unlike previous friendlies, it was Torry who suffered at the hands of the referee, as senor Perez dished out yellow cards to Alexis, Borja and Oscar, whilst Lorca escaped punishment!

AThe President of Orihuela CF, Antonio Felices, met with executives of the Valencian Football Federation last week to clarify the situation regarding the club and the coming season. Still with a debt of 60,000 euro, on which the Elche Courts are still deliberating, there had been some doubt that ‘The Yellows’ could come up with an acceptable repayment plan but following the meeting, which the President described as ‘productive’ the Federation have accepted his proposals and confirmed the club’s entry into Tercera for 2014/15 getting underway with a visit to Ontinyent on 24 August. The Federation has also rescinded their earlier decision regarding new signings and following the payment to last season’s players of all monies outstanding Coach Garcia Tébar will now be able to bring in new staff. Felices also said that he has the support of all club directors and confirmed that the club will comply with all Federation Rules, and that they have now appointed a new manager whose preparations for the coming season are already well advanced. Also off the field, players from the club last week presented Orihuela’s new strip. Manufactured by the company Acerbis, who are also a major sponsor of del club scorpion, the home strip will remain unchanged, yellow shirts and blue shorts while the away strip will be celestial blue shirts and white shorts. Following last week’s appointment on a 2 year contract, the new manager Andrés García Tébar was officially unveiled at the Hotel Tudemir. Tébar said all the right things beginning by acknowledging

that of all the leagues in theCoach Tercera Category the Andrés Valencian division is by farGarcía the stronges,t but García Tebar Tebar,, athe nevertheless said that he expects build offices a team that thetoclub fices of is challenging for the playoffs and promotion at the end of the season. Tébar also pointed to the economic situation. He said that despite Orihuela being without significant investment, he was confident that he already had the right signings in mind. It was now just a question of trying to bring them to the club for the right money. Meanwhile the club’s home ground, Los Arcos, is currently undergoing a facelift. According to the councilor for sport, Luis Galiano, the playing surface is being completely reseeded with Bermuda grass. Other work includes the refurbishment and extension of the sprinkler and irrigation systems . Although the league season will get underway on August 24, Orihuela are playing away at Villajoyosa. The second week is free so the first home game will take place at Los Arcos on 7 September against CD Acero by which time the ground will be in absolute pristine condition said the councillor. The budget for the work is 16,600 euros. The company in charge of the stadium work is a Spanish company, Royal Verd, which carried out ground maintenance at seven World Cup stadiums in Brazil. Engineer, Carlos Botella, said that he has also solved a serious drainage problem where a 10 inch layer of clay stopped the grass from taking root. He too says he is confident that the ground will be ready for the first league fixture in early September.

SEGUNDA START DATE DELAYED AS JUDGE ORDERS MURCIA REINSTATEMENT Club President Jesus Samper explaining the situation at a recent press conference

Just ten days before the start of the Football League season in Spain a judge has ordered the reinstatement of Real Murcia into the Segunda A (Spanish 2nd division) throwing the National league (LFP)into chaos. The club were relegated by the football authorities last week when they failed to reach agreement with the tax authorities about the repayment of a 12 million euro debt with Mirandes, who finished fourth from bottom of the Liga Adelante last season, being told that they would not now be relegated. But on Wednesday Real Murcia appealed the decision which was overturned in the

CD TORREVIEJA ROUNDUP Next Sunday, ko 7pm, at Vicente Garcia Stadium, Torry embark on a new season in div 3, against highly fancied Atletico Saguntino. Having completed a busy week of friendlies, manager Galliana should know his starting eleven, for this long awaited fixture. Only 24 hours after hosting Pinoso, Torry took a very much second string squad, to play Albatera inside the Nuevo Calvario Stadium. Brani opened the scoring on 34 mins, following an assist by Mati, but by half time, Torry had fallen behind, as Marcos was beaten by strikes

Commercial Court in Madrid thereby requiring the LFP to allow the club to be readmitted into the Liga Adelante. So with Mirandes being given the earlier reprieve, that now raises the prospect of having to play this season’s Segunda A with 23 clubs in the division instead of the usual 22 and completely redrawing the fixture calendar just 10 days before the new season is due to kick off. However, in a further twist, the LFP published a statement on Wednesday rejecting the orders of the court and insisting that Murcia would not play in Spain's second tier this season. "We repeat that under no circumstances can Real Murcia SAD be reinstated for the current season," reads the LFP communique, which they explains such an act would be "judicially impossible," and highlighting that the club has committed financial irregulari-

ties on more than one occasion and that the club currently owes 12 million euros in unpaid taxes to the Spanish Treasury. The LFP adds that the case Murcia has taken to court is independent from that which the LFP used to relegate the club, all of which means the coming days will almost certainly see a crossfire of accusations and counteraccusations. However at the weekend it was reported that the LFP have said that they now respect the decision of the court and have delayed the start of the League while the situation is resolved. They have decided to push back the start date of the league and a meeting will be held today, Monday, to address the issue with the clubs, the LFP, the RFEF and the players’ association, the AFE, involved. Today will also see the LFP consider their response to the court, with LFP President Javier Tebas to hold a Press conference at the end of the series of meetings. The LFP have said in a statement they expect developments over the next 10 days. Murcia finished fourth in the Segunda last season, but missed out in the playoffs before their relegation was announced for financial reasons.
