SELLOUT SUCCESS FOR RBL BBQ

A really wonderful night attended by very nearly 200 people, that was the Royal British Legion BBQ, held by the Orihuela Costa Branch last Thursday evening at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras. Not only were the diners right royally feasted by our lovable host Elena, but they also enjoyed an evening of first class entertainment provided by the 17 year old singing sensation Rebecca Holt, ably supported by the ever popular local showgroup TAABS

(Torrevieja Association Of Amateur Balladeer Singers), all of whom gave their excellent services absolutely free of charge. But in providing a solo performance of his own it was Les Goodacre who got the evening underway. Les is a recent addition to the TAABS lineup, but with a penchant for Elvis, he was largely playing to an audience of that sort of era. It was felt that his talents were far too good to forgo, so his first class interpretations of a number of Elvis classics helped to set the mood for the remainder of this most enjoyable musical evening. Continued From Page 1 Rebecca Holt was next up and with her relaxed style and presentation, and her simply wonderful voice, her opening set was bubbly and a great deal of fun. A mark of this young lady’s performance was that she kept the audience spellbound, even whilst the bbq was being served....not an easy task when playing to the 200 ravenous diners. TAABS took over the stage under their new Musical Director Shirley Godfrey and they too wowed the bumper crowd with a sparkling performance of popular songs from the shows. As the audience began to sing along we heard half a dozen solo performances from the octet who just seem to get better with age. It was apparent that the group have been working quite hard with their harmonies as there was hardly a wavering note all night. Certainly one of the best harmonic performances that I have heard on the Costa Blanca for many a good year, and so apparent that they work extremely hard at everything they do. TAABS have now been performing on our shores for over 15 years and with 24 shows last year alone I can now see why they are in such great demand. And what a bonus; their performances are all provided absolutely free of charge, the result being that they have raised many thousands of euro’s for Costa Blanca charities over the years.

Monday, 25th August, 2014 As the evening progressed I was particularly looking forward to Rebecca’s second set featuring songs from ‘The War Years’ and this is where her talents really shone through as she transported us all back with her wonderful husky tones. In Vera Lynn’s 97th year Rebecca paid tribute to ‘The Forces Sweetheart’ by singing many of the songs most associated with her, "We'll Meet Again", "The White Cliffs of Dover", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "There'll Always Be an England" and many, many more. And with song sheets provided, had there been a roof to the open air venue, she surely would have brought it down. This young lady is almost certainly on the verge of stardom so to see her entertaining locally as she continues to build on her experience really is a great joy for those of us who are able to see her perform. It seems incredible that one so young can be so completely immersed in the emotion of her songs. She has the honesty, vulnerability and total commitment every time she sings - the hallmark of a true artist. And whilst the evening was all about having a jolly good time the monies that were raised through the raffle, in excess of 750 euro, really will be put to good use as they are added to the funds raised by the Orihuela Costa Branch toward their 2014 Poppy Appeal, all of which will be use to support ex servicemen and their families

here in Spain. ORIHUELA GETS NEW BEACH SECURITY LOCKERS

Not only can the beaches of the Orihuela Costa boast some of the best quality service standards in the area, with quality accreditations aplenty, the beach at Playa la Glea has taken delivery of what may have looked like a simple oversized white box, but when it opened, it revealed itself to be one of the most secure beach locker units there is. In fact, according to the company trialling the lockers, it is the only unit in the world in the configuration on the coast of Orihuela. The lockers have an integrated information screen with them, available in a variety of languages, including English, which will guide you through the process of acquiring your locker. Telling the system that you want to hire a locker for the day, you simply pay your 5 euro, either by credit or debit card, or in cash with coins. The system then allocates you a locker and number and delivers a small plastic token with a secure barcode on. A simple scan of the barcode on the “magic eye of the locker will start the process of releasing the locking mechanism, allowing you to securely leave your

belongings out of temptations way. Once finished, lock the door and take your taken with you, maybe tied around your wrist with one of the provided bands, and enjoy they day at the beach. It is also reassuring to know that should the power fail, then the system is fail-safe and will remain locked until an engineer attends and provides more power. As an added bonus, once you have your locker allocated, you also get a code for the high-speed WiFi network, with a 10 megabyte speed, which you can also use all day long. The chiringuito beach bars already provide free WiFi in their immediate proximity, but the benefit of this system is that you can use it pretty much anywhere on the beach. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, was given a guided tour of the facility by Jef Van Hyfte, the man behind the initiative. Detailing how the unit is self powering, from solar energy, with a battery backup, it is also environmentally friendly. Scheurer explained how that fact alone could contribute to part of the next level of accreditations for the beaches in the area, as the town hall are shortly going to be looking at improving the environmental qualities in the area.

TORREVIEJA THEATRES MAY BE FORCED TO CLOSE

Councillor for the Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, claims that the Ministry of the Interior and Justice may close down both Torrevieja´s municipal theatre, and the musical auditorium, “if it meets its obligation” on account of the buildings “lacking the mandatory licenses for opening and activities”.

In a statement, Dolón said that “eight years after its inauguration and opening to the public, it remains in a state of absolute illegality, in case of disaster, it will greatly exacerbate the negative consequences that follow”. To Dolón, the government cannot claim that the records of the municipal theatre “is in process” after it has “been so long” since the opening and they “cannot keep looking the other way and pretend they are not aware that the theatre is being used”. Dolón has also confirmed that the Los Verdes are preparing a new complaint addressed to the regional ministry which will include the programming of the theatre and events taking place, so as they can no longer claim to be in ignorance that the buildings are being used illegally for the events that take place, thus forcing them to “act accordingly”, and “impose the penalties provided by the current regu-

lations”. Dolón also stated how the last report formed by the Los Verdes detailed the “absolute irregularity” of the municipal theatre and requested that the City of Torrevieja “provide information on the situation in which is the record for obtaining a license to open” has been achieved. In his opinion, the administration “will be forced to act to take whatever legal steps are necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and users”. Continuing that it is “very difficult” for the license was granted, because “the works do not have the finalised details from the completed projects by the architect”. Moreover, the councillor states that the ruling government of the Partido Popular, with Eduardo Dolón as mayor, “has not resolved the numerous anomalies detected at the time of inspection by the Ministry of Interior and Justice”. Concerns relating to the “capacity of the theatre and the spacing between the rows of seats” are some of the issues still to be addressed, and will require “constructive solutions and other facilities, to ensure that the recalculated capacity meets the legally established occupation densities”. The greens also state that there are also pending requirements to satisfy current regulations relating to access to the theatre, plant height, general lighting and security, among others. This news will no doubt come as yet another insult to the residents and businesses of Torrevieja, as the town hall are being accused of ignoring rules and laws that they are enforcing, such as the all-night long Electromar music event that caused disturbance right through the night for residents, and their actions to threaten and fine businesses for having live entertainment in venues without the appropriate licences, as it is clear from this allegation that they feel above the law themselves.

TORREVIEJA ASKED TO EXPLAIN HOMOPHOBIC PARADE The young socialists of Torrevieja have demanded answers from Torrevieja town hall, as to why the participants of the summer parade through the city were allowed to shout homophobic and hateful chants as they moved through the streets. The secretary General, Carlos Sánchez, has asked the local government team to explain what happened as having a parade formed mostly of children and their parents expressing such hateful attitudes is both contrary to the laws regarding hate crimes, and creates a poor image of the city of Torrevieja which is trying to make its way into being a more diverse place. According to Sánchez, “the use of homophobic language to children instils an image of normalcy in the use of such taunts and attacks”. The socialists are demanding that the Partido Popular councillor responsible for allowing the parade ensures that this can never happen again, especially during events paid for by the residents of the town, many of whom are homosexual and therefore funded the hateful behaviour. Sánchez said in a statement that “our city has always been shown as an open and welcoming city”, although there was the obvious exception in 2010 when the former mayor, Pedro Hernández Mateo, now a convicted criminal, upset one of Spain´s most popular singers, Miguel Bosé, by using a description of the singer, which the IU group at the time described as “a disgusting act of homophobia”.

URGENT CALLS FOR DESALINATION PLANT IMPLEMENTATION The PSPV socialist group of Alicante has called on Spain´s central government to implementation the desalination plants in Torrevieja and Mutxamel, in order to alleviate the urgent problems that the province of Alicante faces during the current drought. Provincial deputy secretary of the PSOE, Herick Campos, said this week that the “paralysis” of the program aimed at providing clean water in the area is unacceptable and the province is about to face a

HOME AND AWAY Spain should immediately halt summary returns of migrants to Morocco from its North African enclave, Melilla, Human Rights Watch has said. Spain should also investigate evidence that Guardia Civil officers beat migrants at the border fence. “Spain’s right to secure its borders doesn’t give it carte blanche to abuse migrants,” said Benjamin Ward, deputy director of the Europe and Central Asia Division at Human Rights Watch.

particularly bad time unless urgent action is taken, which could so easily have been avoided if the government of Mariano Rajoy had not caused the “delay in commissioning of the desalination plants”. Campos stressed that the drought has not only had “consequences for rain-fed crops”, but it has also affected citrus, which has resulted in an increase in production costs, which can only be absorbed by higher prices to the consumer. Campos also says that the immediate implementation of the plants would avoid depleting underground reserves, which are limited, or taking water away from other industries, and even restrictions on consumption. Campos also pointed out that the previous socialist governments invested 2,119 million euro in the expansion of the Alicante II desalination plant and San Pedro del Pinatar, the transfer network at Jucar Vinalopó, improving water channels in Taibilla, and the modernization of irrigation systems. Earlier this year, the Constitutional Court annulled an agreement set out in March 2007 that ordered the paralysation of construction to finish the desalination plant in Torrevieja. The plant was set to be a flagship project, becoming the largest such facility in the whole of Europe, and the second largest in the world, but was fraught with political debate, claims of over budgeting and waste and environmental concerns.

Spanish oil engineering company Tecnicas Reunidas said it had won a $1.5 billion turnkey contract as part of the Refinery and Petrochemicals Integrated Development (Rapid) project in Malaysia. The 50-month contract, awarded by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), is to engineer, supply and build part of a refinery and integrated petrochemical plant.

PLENTY OF ROOM In response to a question raised by the municipal Esquerra Unida group of Valencia, the local government revealed that for the 50,000 families evicted from their homes, just 16 have been given contracts to stay in the “social housing” provided by the government in 2013.

SLOW COPS An investigation into a crash in March on the island of Gran Canaria has attributed the cause of the incident to be a vehicle travelling at an inappropriate speed. However, members of the Guardia Civil are outraged at the findings, as the vehicle involved was one of their patrols responding to an emergency call, with lights on and siren sounding. The driver now faces disciplinary proceedings.

OLIVE DRY In the midst of the worst drought in history, Spain´s olive producers believe that this year´s harvest could be up to 40% smaller than last year. They also claim that the result will be higher prices for direct and indirect products, which have already increased by 30% since January across Europe.

BLACK FLAG FOR WATER Q UALITY The environmental group, Ecologistas en Acción, have issued 30 “black flags” to beaches of the Valencia region, denoting areas where the minimum legal standards of water quality have not been reached. The good news is that the southernmost area of Valencia, the Orihuela Costa, has been spared the embarrassment of having been given the flags, indicating the water quality there to be of an acceptable standard, but the same sadly cannot be said as we move north through Torrevieja, Guardamar, Santa Pola, Elche and Benidorm, to name but a few, who all have beaches of substandard quality, some of which the group even recommend not bathing in the waters of. The ecologists state that the report was based on the “limited evidence” mostly obtained through the Ministry of Environment, with the voluntary work of activists, and has focused on key impacts and threats on the coast of Castellón, Valencia and Alicante, looking mainly at organic pollution discharges. In addition to organic pollution, the study analyzes a percentage that shows the operation of the treatment plants which deposit wastewater throughout the territory of the community. Most worryingly, the report recommends not bathing in the waters of the beaches at Playa Arenals del sol in Elche, and Playa de Guardamar, Playa Roqueta and Playa Vivers in Guardamar.

In the Alicante province, Black Flags have been issued for the beaches at Els Poblets-el Verger, Dénia, Jávea, Benitatxel (cumbers del sol-6), Moraira-Teuleda, Calpe, Altea (Toix-Mascarat), Altea, Benidorm, Villajoyosa, El Campello (La Merced), Alacantí Norte, Alicante (Monte Orgegia), Alicante (Rincón de León), Elx (Arenales), Santa Pola, Guardamar and Torrevieja. Finally, they did offer one positive message, that of the “positive actions” which have been achieved on the island of Tabarca, therefore the beaches there have received a “green dot”, after volunteers from their group were involved in a cleanup operation.

VALENCIA OR MADRID? Not an easy choice because both are great.

Valencia, with a population of a little less than 1 million people is the smaller of the two. It sits on the East coast north of Alicante. As a coastal town there are beaches nearby for those who want them. The city used to straddle the river Turia, but Metropolitan with this river’s water being Cathedral diverted into the surrounding Basilica, Valencia orchards for irrigation, the dry river bed has been converted into a lovely park area which runs right through the city centre. A pleasant walk through the park brings you into the bustling narrow cobbled streets which surround the Cathedral. In this cathedral sits a chalice which is claimed to be the holy grail from which Christ drank at the last supper. Valencia is a colourful city which is full of flowers, fountains, beautiful buildings, and street cafes. Alongside a brilliantly ornate railway station, sits an extremely impressive bullring which has 384 arches. The very centre of the city is pedestrianised and provides an excellent situation for lunch. Classic buildings to see are the National Museum of ceramic Arts, old silk exchange, decorative indoor market, and the town hall. In another section of the city you can visit the futuristic collection of buildings which form the city of science and art. Here you have a hands on science museum, a mini train, an opera house, Fallas Museum, (where you can see some of the famous effigies from many years past that escaped the flames of this famous festival of fire). The biggest Aquatic museum in Spain, complete with a fish tunnel where you are surrounded by a variety of sea life including sharks is also in this area. The nearby Bio Park is an exciting experience for those who love to get close to wildlife from all over the world. Valencia is a lovely balance of old and new which has a comfortably open and spacious feel to it. Or Madrid. Being the capital city of Spain of course has a much larger population than Valencia and unlike Valencia is situated well away from the sea. Succeeding Toledo as

the capital city of Spain during the medieval times, the city has grown rapidly and yet for the most part tastefully. The Royal Palace sits beside the beautifully designed Alemeda Cathedral where modern Royals are generally christened, married, and buried. These both overlook the well groomed Oriente square. Not far away in and around Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and the Grand via, the day to day business of living in or visiting Madrid involves many theatres, cinemas, restaurants, bars, beautiful parks and many museums. For art lovers this is a virtual treasure trove. Gathered together within walking distance of each other you will find the world famous museums of Prado, and Reina Sofia. Between them these two museums offer thousands of paintings by many of the worlds finest painters and artists. The Thyssen collection is also only a few minutes away, as is the National Archaeological Museum. Nearby the massive Buen Retiro park offers a green leafy retreat from the action of the city. Centred round a massive lake where you can hire a rowing boat, have a picnic, enjoy the botanic gardens or admire the large impressive statues surrounding the lake. For shoppers, most of the big name shops are represented here. And of course you have two top level football teams based here. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid both open their grounds for public visits. A large but surprisingly green city which provides for every taste.

Bueno Retiro Park, Madrid The good news is that whether you choose Valencia or Madrid (or both) You don’t need to do the driving or parking, because David’s Coachtrips offer you great low cost excursions to each of these cities. Valencia using a quality 3* city hotel B&B 102€ --- Next dates 3 days Sept 4-6 or 18-20. Madrid using a 3* city centre hotel B&B 175€ --- Next dates 4 days 1-4 September (Includes day trip to Escorial/Valley of the fallen).

ENERGY SPARKS Spain has increased electricity supply from renewable and clean resources, with 55.3% of all electricity generated in July alone coming from zero emission sources, according to the national electricity network. Wind power generation soared by 28.7% year on year, responsible for 16.8% of all electricity consumed, hydroelectricity generated 10%, whereas solar power generated just 4.3% per cent, a figure similar to the 4% from solar thermal projects. Nuclear power was responsible for just 19%, showing a marked change in the way energy is generated.

RED TOMATOES Figures released last week reveal the importance of relationships between Almería and Russia, with food exports from Spain now valued at 14.7 million euro, 42.5% more than 2012. Ecologists in Action has announced details of the arguments they have presented against the Environmental Impact Study prepared by the Building company intending to urbanize Cala Mosca, the last undeveloped coastal area of the Orihuela Costa. The organization bases its opposition to the development of the project on a number of points including what it considers to be an erroneous assessment of the impacts of the project on protected species of fauna and flora, la cabeza de gato y la tudorella mauretánica. It also says that the areas where these endangered species are dedicated to green and recreational areas would be "inconsistent with the conservation objective 'and the location of pedestrian paths and recreational areas. The environmentalists conclude that there are too many flaws in the plan submitted by the developer and have therefore called for a Strategic Environmental Assessment of the plan so that the deficiencies can be properly identified. Meanwhile, following on from the article published in last week’s edition of The Leader ‘Support For

Cala Mosca Revived’, whilst applauding the actions of CLARO regarding their petition, one reader, Malcolm Drew, was critical of the lack of information held by staff in the Orihuela Costa Town Hall. He wrote “I was delighted to read that there is growing support for the protection of Cala Mosca. However, two more signatures could have been added to the petition if somebody at the Orihuela Costa Town Hall had known anything about it when I called in there on the morning of the 11th August in accordance with C.L.A.RO.s submission instructions as specified in local newspapers. A woman at the right hand side reception desk looked mystified when she perused our completed petition form and also conferred with a colleague. She then directed me to the tourist Office where the woman there promptly directed me back to the reception desk! I gave up and left. This sort of thing has happened to me before at the town hall so it is probably a common occurrence. All the more reason for C.L.A.R.O. to have ensured this would not happen.” Let’s all hope that there were not too many other unsuccessful petitioners who suffered the same Bureaucratic outcome.

FIRE FIGHTING FIESTA THREAT According to a press release from the Partido Popular of Orihuela, the municipality owes the fire consortium 64,000 euro. For this reason, the fire service will only provide emergency cover in the municipality, only attending emergencies, and will not be present to cover events that would normally be of risk but preventable, such as firework displays. As the risk of fire can be prevented by not setting the fireworks off, the risk factor from this sort of event is easily avoided. The first major event they are refusing to attend is the celebration of Orihuela´s own patron saint, the Virgen de Monserrate, to be held on the 31st of August. The acting mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata, has declared that the outstanding payment will be made imminently, and that the receipt of a debtors letter is normal practice, whilst confirming that, “I wanted to make clear that the fiesta will not be left without the protection of fire fighters”, whilst criticising the PP for their “alarmist” attitude.

DISCOVERING ORIHUELA’S HISTORY

The capital of the Vega Baja region of the Alicante province, Orihuela is an ancient town with a long and distinguished history visitors to which are now able to rediscover the city’s history through some of its main characters, the likes of the poet Miguel Hernández, Archbishop Fernando de Loazes or the Armengola heroin, all played by a group of six young actors. These theatre tours take place every couple of weeks. They start at the school Santo Domingo and for very nearly two hours an average of 80 visitors are transported back in time, witnessing iconic events through the eyes of the actors as they really happened, stories both familiar and otherwise in which the audience discovers the real history of Orihuela City. The history of the college itself is explained by one

of the city’s most famous sons, the Orihuela born Archbishop Fernando de Loazes, the founder of the original college who was subsequently to become the Archbishop of Valencia, all through the actions of an actor. At the Gate de la Olma, the troubadour Mariano provides another overview of the city before the group moves on to the Museo Casa de Miguel Hernández, the house where the poet lived and which contains many of his contemporary personal effects and photographs, where the poet himself, played by actor from La Nena Crea, welcomes them and even accompanies the party to a festival that takes place in la calle de Arriba. The music and poetry enliven the whole tour with the theme "Orihuela city of light" in which there is plenty of opportunity for emotional and comedic moments. Each character that visitors meet carries a lantern with which to guide them to their next destination. The Armengola, heroine of Orihuela and one of the most important figures in Orihuela, perhaps most well known from the Fiestas de la Reconquista, the folklore festival of the Moors and Christians, brings the tour to a close as she takes visitors to the gates of the City, repeating many of the experiences that they have discovered earlier. Described as perhaps the most original way to discover Orihuela, and organized by the Department of Tourism, dates of forthcoming tours are 13 and 27 September, 11 and 25 October. The event is free and for all ages but participants do need a good level of Spanish. More information from the Tourist Office or www.orihuelaturistica.es.

DRY OUT In the first six months of this year, the city of Alicante has been the driest since 1857, when an official weather record was established, according to the Laboratory of Climatology at the University of Alicante. The head of the department, Jorge Olcina, explained that the provincial capital has registered only 27 litres of rain in the first six months of 2014, and so “we have one of the driest years in the southeast in the last 150 years”.

COOLING SALES Despite the hot, dry summer, sales of ice cream are registering “similar or slightly lower” numbers due to “disappointing” demand, according to the president of Spain´s national association of ice cream makers, José Luis Gisbert. The reason is partly due to more businesses opening offering a more diverse range of cooling treats, and people having less money to spend this summer.

THE LOVE OF CATS Residents and local groups of Guardamar del Segura have collected more than 3,000 signatures complaining about the town hall´s enforced ban on feeding stray cats in the town.

The Case of the Noisy Dominoes We live in a noisy world, and the opportunity to find near silence from time to time is a welcome and refreshing one. A recent report from the World Health Organisation claims that Spain is the noisiest country in Europe. Apparently noise levels are around 70 decibels, whereas the World Health Organisation recommends a maximum of 55db during the day and 45 db at night. These figures do not surprise me. As much as I like most Spanish people, and generalisations are dangerous, I have always maintained that Spanish babies are born with their volume controls glued to the maximum loud position, and it stays that way for life. Travelling by bus, train, sitting in the theatre, dentist, hospital or doctor’s surgery surrounded by “Silence” notices, always makes me smile. No chance; whenever a group of Spanish people get together they do what they like doing best, and that is to talk, and the louder the better. One of my favourite Spanish cities, Seville, has decided to take action against excessive noise, and decided to ban the playing of dominoes and dice games in outdoor cafes! Well, yes, I guess it is a step in the right direction, but I can think of any number of ‘calming’ measures without banning elderly men, in particular, enjoying playing dominoes in the sunshine.

How about excessive revving of motorcycle and car engines? Loud televisions in cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as all night singing and dancing in residential areas? I would also add fireworks, be it a Church organised show of devotion to a particular saint during religious processions, or the endless explosion of fireworks from Halloween to January 6th each year, which terrifies most creatures living outdoors, as well as many people. Seville is also looking to ban the rolling of barrels down streets and, strangely enough, drinking and eating whilst standing outside cafe bars and terraces. This new law, like some of Spain’s other strange laws, such as noisy stag parties, and pianists playing loudly at home have led perpetrators to face prosecution. The new Seville law, like many others are often part of local democracy, voted upon by local neighbourhood associations and brought into law without too much consideration of the consequences. Now to the real cause of all this noise. It is simple; it is mostly from noisy people. Interestingly, Spanish doctors report that around 7 per cent of all Spaniards have serious problems with their vocal cords, and among teachers the figure rises to nearly one in four, making it one of the main reasons why they take a day off work, as well as being one of the reasons why I usually avoid entering a Spanish classroom. World Voice Day, on 16 April, is when Spanish doctors spring into action to remind the public as to why they may suffer from throat problems, which also includes too much smoking. Sadly, those poor vocal chords stand no chance. My message to Seville is simple; leave those poor domino and dice

throwing players alone. They really are not doing any harm. How about encouraging everyone to speak a little quieter and to actually listen to what other people are saying, rather than speaking over them? This particular piece of advice would apply to many other nationalities too. WATCH OUT FOR THOSE NUMBER PLATE CHECKS The Guardia Civil traffic department has launched a mini campaign to check number plates on vehicles, paying particular attention to ensuring that the details of the registration are clearly visible in the event of them being snapped by a traffic law enforcement device. The move is thought to be in preparation for the new traffic laws which come into force in May, whereas not only will radar detectors be banned, but officers will no longer have to stop a vehicle in order to issue a fine. By ensuring that the number plate details are correct, this will ensure that anybody breaking the law can be brought to justice quicker. Although some of the techniques are nothing but

urban myths, the officers will also be checking for any signs that a driver may have tried to camouflage a number plate, by suing such things as spray or stickers. One such range of stickers, which are coming from Russia, are hardly visible to the naked eye as the number plate looks normal, but renders the letters and numbers invisible to traffic cameras. Other stickers on the market are designed to increase the reflective flash of a camera, thus theoretically whitewashing the photograph and making the number plate unreadable. When the new legislation comes into force on the 9th of May, there will be a 200 euro fine for using a radar detector, as well as the loss of points, with the exception of those devices that warn of fixed cameras, the information which is already published by the DGT. The Guardia Civil have also said that they will continue to monitor social network sites for warnings of their presence, moving to a new location should drivers become aware that they are there.

NEW PETROL POLICY FOR SPANISH CAR HIRE- A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION Lots of us come to Spain either to live or for holidays, and there are many reasons we may want to rent a car to make the most of that experience. If we are here on holiday, we will probably want to explore a little and see as much as we can of this lovely country. Even just getting form the airport to our destination may require a car rental which can work out more cost effective than a taxi. If we live here we are likely to have family and friemds over to visit and we may want to rent a car for them or a bigger car for all of us. One of the most contentious issues generally in the world of car rental, and especially in Spain has been the full to empty fuel policy which can often cost the customer more than the price of the car hire itself. Customers are sold a full tank of petrol, normally at an inflated price, and told to return the car with an empty tank which is of course practically impossible. Any petrol still in the tank was not refunded and the car hire companies not only profited from the inflated charge for the tank, they benefitted from using the petrol left in the tank for their next customer. An average charge for a full tank of petrol even in a small car was 100 euros which is evidently inflated and as previous mentioned would often supersede the cost of the rental itself. Many UK nespapers have ran stories that decried this “full to empty policy” policy but to be frank there was little alternative but to bite the bulet and return your car with as little petrol as possible. The good news, or at least better news, is that from January 2014 the policy has changed by law. The new policy is “pre-paid fuel with refund”. What does this mean? Well the bad news is that customers are still required to pay for a full tank of petrol. This is required to be sold at pump prices but most companies will add an “administration charge” which means it will still feel like an inflated price. However, the much better news is that now the companies

are required by law to refund any petrol not used. Due to the administration charge, if you pay 100 euros for a tank of petrol and you take it back half full, you will probably not get 50 euros back. You will most likely receive 40 euros but that is 40 euros more than you would have received before January so at least it is a big step in the right direction. At Indigo Car Hire, we use many different companies and you can rest assured that if you rent a car through us the petrol policy will be transparent and we will let you know in advance exactly what you will be required to pay. At the call centre in Leeds there is always an advisor to talk to, 24 hours a day, so whichever part of the world you are from you can always connect with a real person to discuss your car hire needs. You do not need to go online to book your car. Whether you need a car for a day, a week, a month or even longer term hires they can help. Although Indigo specialise in UK car rental, they also offer car rental at 25,000 locations across the globe. Contact us directly by calling 0113 28 99 279 or emailing us at sales@indigocarhire.co.uk and we will get right back to you.

A GOOD NOISE CONTRIBUTES TO DIABETES DEATHS AFTERNOON NAP report featured by the Spanish traffic department, the DGT, reveals that scientific research conducted jointly by the Carlos III Institute of Health, the Higher Council for Scientific Research and the Autonomous University of Madrid, demonstrates a close relationship between noise and mortality from diabetes. Researchers studied the noise levels caused by traffic in the city of Madrid between 2001 and 2009,

A

Julio Díaz, lead scientist at the national school of health based in the Carlos III Institute, says that whilst the body is asleep in a noisy environment, it reacts by releasing Cortisol into the bloodstream, along with other compounds, resulting in a greater amount of this hormone in the blood, and the increased risk of diabetes. The study not only concludes that noise is associated with diabetes, but also links it to mortality from the disease. “After a peak of noise, in two or three

Doctor Esteban de Vicente from the Chiron Torrevieja Hospital has been defending one of Spain´s oldest traditions, by explaining how the “siesta” can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 37% and also reduces the level of stress and physical tension.

POMEGRANATE PANIC Local Pomegranate producers have expressed their concerns that sanctions against Russia will result in a 30% drop in their export sales. If the growers are unable to sell to Russia, directly or indirectly, they will be faced with an excess of 13,000 tons of fruit.

HAPPY CAMPERS Some of the best campsites in Spain can be found south of Alicante, as seen by the awards by the Dutch travel assn ANWB, and the German automobile club ADAC. The Marjal Costa Blanca Eco Camping Resort in Crevillente is on the list for “Best Camping 2014”, along with Marjal Guardamar Camping Resort, and Camping La Marina.

NO TIME TO WAIT

and revealed that the key behind this relationship is a hormone called Cortisol, a glucocorticoid steroid hormone, produced by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex, which is released in response to stress and a low level of blood glucocorticoid. Its primary functions are to increase blood sugar through gluconeogenesis, suppress the immune system, and aid the metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrate.

days we notice a peak in mortality from diabetes, especially in those over 65 years”, says Díaz, concluding that “if the noise levels during sleep were just 0.5 decibels lower, it would prevent about 350 deaths per year in the over 65 age group in the city of Madrid alone”. Of course, although the study was conducted using traffic as part of the data collection, noise in general can be a contributing factor, such as that from bars, clubs, parties, concerts, sports fixtures and even snoring, which can all lead to a potential increase in mortality.

In addition to the physical benefits, a short nap also increases the ability concentration by 34% and completely enhances alertness, vital in shift workers for improving their performance. However, whereas the traditional siesta time may last for a few hours, the medic stressed that the nap time should not exceed thirty minutes, as this can start to reverse the benefits, thus having the opposite effect, a feeling of malaise and increased fatigue to levels previously felt. “Sleeping longer or later than recommended is not a beneficial nap”, he explains, as it “affects the quality and duration of nocturnal sleep”, and can cause a symptom known as “sleep inertia”, resulting in “a dull feeling, accompanied by headaches and feeling no restorative sleep”. As for making the most of your siesta, the doctor stressed that the nap must be done at certain times of day, preferably immediately before or after eating. Noise should be avoided and the room set to a good temperature. The most beneficial system would be the habit of napping every day at the same time. The Chiron Torrevieja Hospital has the latest technology for conducting neuropsychological tests, which are capable of diagnosing sleep disorders and brain bioelectrical activity.

A medical emergency on the beach at playa de San Juan was attended by lifeguards and an off-duty doctor who managed to stabilise a young girl who had fallen ill, whilst they had to wait 35 minutes for the arrival of an emergency ambulance. In addition to severe cuts in the number of ambulances on the street, there have been numerous cases this year alone of ambulances getting lost, which has been attributed to the centralisation of the 112 emergency coordination centre.

CUTS COST LIVES The family of a 36 year old architect from Almendralejo have filed a complaint with the police after the man died of internal bleeding. They say that the 112 emergency centre´s refusal to send a medically equipped ambulance was a contributing factor, as the presence of a doctor could have provided assistance in the last moments of his life. The family also says that they had to request the ambulance twice, as the first time the coordinator had just assumed the man to be drunk. Following the second call, a basic vehicle was sent, but the friends of the man had to carry the victim to the ambulance, as it only came with a driver.

There is also a look at the way in which the portrayal of women has changed over the years, from hostesses in the early years like Anne Aston to presenters such as Carol Vorderman in the 1980s. In the final episode, it is 1917 and everyone now realises that victory will only be achieved at a painful cost. This programme brings to life the stories of three of them. The black Glaswegian shipyard worker Arthur Roberts served at the Battle of Passchendaele. The aristocratic Duff Cooper, lover of Lady Diana Manners, quit the cipher desk at the Foreign Office to join the Grenadier Guards and was awarded the DSO. London lad Ted Poole was just 18 when he was called up - the last of his brothers still alive. As the war entered its final stages, who would be left when the end finally came?

A REMEMBRANCE OF BOMBING VICTIMS IN TORREVIEJA The 25th of August marks a dark day in the history of Torrevieja, as in 1938, the city was bombed by Italian aircraft. It was a time during the Spanish Civil war, when the planes dropped 60 bombs onto the city, ripping through 25 homes and causing serious damage to buildings in the town centre and the port area, leaving 19 people dead and 45 injured, 25 of whom were civilians and 20 military. Although shrouded in secrecy throughout history, like much of the Franco era, these days the horrific incident is remembered annually by those who religiously attend to reflect on a past time and remember those involved. However, as in every year in modern times, one group that fails to recognise the atrocity and remember those who died is the authority which currently runs the city, the Partido Popular government led by Eduado Dolón. For years, local relatives, residents and opposition political figures have called for a permanent monument to be erected to the fallen, and for as long, those requests have been ignored or declined. A representative from the local republican group leading the memorial said that they still deeply regret that “the city of Torrevieja has not responded to their demand for the placement of at least one plate with the names of the victims of this tragic event”.

LADY OF ELCHE HITS THE BIG SCREEN 'Operasiones espesiales' will premiere on September 19 at about 30 cinemas across Spain. An action packed movie the plot centres around the theft of The Lady of Elche

Director Paco Soto The film was put together over almost four years. It was shot in over 80 locations including Elche, Alicante, Madrid, Jacarilla, Benitachell, Torrevieja and Santa Pola and it employed approximately 30 technicians, more than 800 extras and about a hundred actors including Alex O'Dogherty, Enrique Villen, Carlos Santos, Emilio Gaviria and Cristina Cifuentes. There are also a lot of familiar faces from the small screen, as well as a cameo appearance of the famous director and actor Santiago Segura. With a budget of around 100,000 euros, 80% of the costs have been funded via the crowd funding method, so to date, over 1,000 individuals and about 100 companies have invested in the film.

ELECTROMAR TO RETURN IN 2015 With an anticipated audience of 15,000 people in 2012, but only 8,000 this year, the organisers of the Electromar music festival in Torrevieja have still announced that they will return next year. Praised as being a tourist attraction, many residents are questioning the value that the partygoers bring, spending little in the city as their drinks are consumed at the venue, they have no interest in visiting shops or restaurants, and there are no requirements for hotels as the gig runs right through the night. Let alone the noise and inconvenience the residents have to endure, roadblocks whilst the security services search for drugs and alcohol, the risk to public safety that drunk drivers create that the law enforcers try to prevent. Quite why Torrevieja is the chosen location for an event that doesn´t meet the usual characteristics of the intended image of the event remains to be seen, when the reality is nothing more than streets flooded with litter and rubbish and no immediate intention to clean up the day after, only showing Torrevieja in the poorest light. Many argue that this is a party better suited to Ibiza or even Benidorm, rather than a town which prides itself on a history of classical musical performances.

MALNOURISHED MARE RESCUED FROM APPALLING CASE OF ANIMAL NEGLECT In one of the most appalling cases of animal neglect yet, the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has saved a malnourished mare with a disease that left her so itchy she literally broke off her own tailbone.

Local police called centre founders Sue and Rod Weeding to Almoradi on Sunday, after a Spanish woman found the horse tied to an orange tree and abandoned. “We responded immediately and were horrified at what we found,” Sue said. “This 15-year-old malnourished mare has melanomas that had become infected through neglect, which triggered an allergic reaction causing intense irritation on any bite, cut or wound.” The horse, which was clearly left untreated, had begun to rub and scratch herself everywhere. “The intensity was so great around her tail area that she has actually broken off her tail bone, we think about a month ago,” Sue said. Though the wounds look horrendous, Sue said the mare was not in any

pain as the nerve endings around her tailbone had died off and were starting to heal over. “The good news is she is now on steroids, which will stop the irritation, and antibiotics to treat the infection,” Sue said. “Obviously her tail will never grow back but with good management and lots of care, all her wounds should heal to an acceptable standard. She is now happily munching good quality food and has settled in very quickly.” Sue said the quick action of police shows local authorities are “now on board” and fully supportive of the rescue centre’s work to prevent animal cruelty across the Alicante province. The rescue was the centre’s second of the week, after Sue and Rod agreed to take a young pony from a French/Spanish couple who could not care for her. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre welcomes any donations and sponsorships to help support their important work. Every single cent donated to EHCRC or spent in their eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre. The EHCRC charity shops are located in La Zenia, Los Montesinos, La Siesta, Ciudad Quesada, Guardamar, La Marina, Pilar de Horadada and Gran Alacant. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are gratefully welcomed. Large donated items such as furniture can be collected from your house and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased from the charity shops. EHCRC is also looking for volunteers to staff its shops for a few hours or days each week Please contact the charity shop hotline on 636 062 000 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public every Sunday between 1pm and 4pm. Entrance is free and refreshments and tasty food are available in the garden café. The first horse tour begins at 2pm, where you can get meet and pat the residents, hear their stories and see firsthand where your money is spent. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For more details and directions to the centre, please visit the website www.easyhorsecare.net.

PAYING THE PRICE FOR ILLEGAL FISHING The Guardia Civil in Murcia have seized a 75 kilo bluefin tuna which had been caught by a fisherman who brought it to land in the Portman area near Cartagena.

This is the second time a catch has been seized by the authorities in recent weeks, which is on account of catching the tuna being banned as it is currently not the fishing season. The fisherman, a resident of Los Dolores, has been reported for the offence and faces a fine of between 201 and 3,000 euro as it is classified as “very serious”. Having had the fish examined and deemed fit for human consumption, the Guardia Civil delivered it to social groups and charitable associations in the area.

IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP

EASTLAKE G.C. ATLANTA. The final 30 in the FedEx playoffs will battle it out here in the Tour Championship on September 11th. After last week’s Barclays Championship the next in line is the Deutsche Bank for the top 100 (29th August) followed by the BMW Championship for the top 70 (4th September.) The prize: $10.000.000 plus. Ian Poulter could treat himself to a private plane if he won, he has been moaning on Twitter how much his wife suffered flying first class recently without the childrens’ nanny! Life is hard. RORY MCILROY’S awe inspiring drives are achieved with his Nike Covert 2.0 Tour driver. Nike claim the greater distance is due to the “Fly Brace technology” stiffening the walls of the cavity back. This increased stability enables more energy to be transferred to the front of the club, adding another couple of mph to his ball speed. Also, a 460cc face size, slightly larger than on his previous drivers gives him better contact; even Rory McIlroy doesn’t hit the centre every time at 120 mph. THE LONG DRIVE COMPETITION was revived at this year’s USPGA Championship, on the 590 yd, par five 10th. It was won by Louis Oosthuizen with a 340 yd. drive. In 1963 Jack Nicklaus won the contest with an incredible 341 yd drive using a persimmon driver with 11 degree loft and Titleist wound ball. Apart from his winnings he received a special money clip, a replica of which he presented to Oosthuizen. "I’ve kept mine in my pocket for 51 years,” Jack commented. Must be time he bought a round. Another player noted for hanging onto his wallet is Tiger Woods, unlike Phil Mickelson, who is apparently an ‘outrageously generous tipper.’ Out of America’s ten worst celebrity tippers Woods came in a comfortable first. A BOGEY FREE ROUND, in fact a bogey free tournament at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open carried Bernhard Langer to his 23rd Champions Tour victory. Langer beat Mark O'Meara and Woody Austin by one shot, finishing with a 16 under 66, his

5th Champions Tour victory this year. U.S. RYDER CUP CAPTAIN Tom Watson has announced that nine players have qualified automatically for the team: Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Jimmy Walker, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Zach Johnson, with the three wild cards to be announced on September 2nd. In the other camp Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Victor Dubuisson, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer, Thomas Bjorn, Jamie Donaldson and Graeme McDowell would compose Paul McGinley’s nine automatic picks as of this week. The final qualifying event, the Italian Open, finishes on August 31st. McDowell could yet be out; Ian Poulter is praying for a wild card, I’m rooting for Jimenez. Pity we can’t have Langer. STEPHANIE MEADOW (22) is Northern Ireland’s female equivalent to Rory McIlroy. Stephanie, from County Antrim made a stunning professional debut in June by finishing joint 3rd in the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst, after Rory gave her some course tips. Their success seems to be inspiring youngsters in Ireland; golf participation is on the rise.

New Carpet At Emerald Isle as the Valencian Championships Loom ! As if the improvements for the European Championships were not enough in 2013 – Emerald Isle Bowls Club have continued on improvements ready for the Valencian Championships in September 2014. This week the club have organised a new carpet for their main rink in preparation for the Valencian Championships as Emerald Isle Bowls Club have the honour of playing host to the Championships and will host the opening ceremony. The carpet is being laid by Dales Sport Surface and John Muldoon, National Director Lawn Bowls Spain and Richard Steadman, Managing Director of Dales Sports Surfaces were both hard at work in the August heat to ensure that the carpet is laid and ready for the Championships. As always, the Emerald Isle Bowls Club is supported by the owner of Emerald Isle, Paul Moran and together they making a winning team working closely together to enhance the club and give the best return to their members and guests. Valencian Bowls Championships starts 20th September 2014 at Emerald Isle Bowls Club

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by SPANISH LIFE PROPERTIES Many members of the club are progressing well in the SABA Knock Out competitions which have now reached the quarter finals stage. The Social Committee organised a very successful Car Treasure Hunt last Sunday and this was well supported by the members. Thanks go to David and Helen Johnson for their organisation and getting everybody to the winning post where we all enjoyed a lovely meal at the Happy Garden Restaurant. Winners were the pairings of Jane and Nigel Baigent and Maddie and Rob Pinfold.

Last Friday saw the club's two SABA squads celebrating winning their respective Leagues with a joint luncheon at Rincon de Miguel in Los Montesinos, where, judging by the noise and hilarity, a good time was had by all. The Winning team Captains Nigel Baigent of the Blenheims, winners of the Spitfire League and Cathy Skinner of the Lancasters, winners of the Harrier League, received their trophies from Vice President of the CBBA, Jean Cooper.

UNFORTUNATELY, it’s going in the other direction in America. Dick's Sporting Goods, largest retailer in the U.S. of TaylorMade and Callaway products, last month fired all the PGA professionals employed in the golf departments of it’s 560 stores. Dick's installed a PGA pro at every store to combat the competition from online retailers, but the decline in golf participation in the U.S. and too many new products flooding the market meant they were overstocked. Dick’s suffered more than most after buying all four models of the driver TaylorMade released last year plus the three new Callaway drivers produced in quick succession. I can guess what the departing pros called the Head of Dick’s as they left! Until next time, Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for all your regripping and repairs. Tel: 638 859 475.

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY, VILLAMARTIN - THE JOHN GOODWIN MASTERS entation on behalf of the family and PJ´s Rentacars.

Trevor and Alison Scammell chose “Golf and Country Club of the Year” Las Colinas for the inaugural John Goodwin Masters. Their former business partner sadly passed away in January this year at the very young age of 51. The PJ´s Rentacars business continues with John´s wife Karen operating the UK side whilst the Scammells operate the Spanish hire car and airport transfer business. The competition attracted a healthy field of Hub members and guests to contest the Memorial Shield and 6 nearest the pins. The day was sponsored by PJ´s Rentacars, supported by the Hub and numerous individual donations in tribute to the popular man from Bromley in Kent. Wife Karen was unable to attend the event but close friend of Johns and fellow Millwall supporter Shawn Butler was on hand to make the pres-

Richard Kent, he of Munchies fame, found some decent form at long last and returned a respectable 37 pts unfortunately not quite enough to shift Rob Wheeler (38 pts) from top spot. Wheeler went one better from his last Hub event at La Finca and has just 4 more Grand Prix competitions to secure one of the many end of season prizes. Shot of the day was claimed by the inimitable Trevor Scammell on the Par 3, 187 yard, 14th. A slightly “fat” tee shot hit the stone gulley protecting the green front and rebounded 35 yards back towards the tee. His resulting second 65 yard chip bounced once and then disappeared into the hole for a well deserved 3 pts. (Scammell is currently off 7). Cliff Smith repeated his Texas Scramble victory with grandson Dec at Las Ramblas by taking Best Guest this time around. The handicap committee were totally unsympathetic with regard to his recent hip replacement operation and duly cut the in-form Smith to 13. The Hub will be tackling La Finca on August 31st and therefore any guests wishing to join the Hubbers should register at the Hub Villamartin as soon as possible due to limited spaces. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY AT LAS RAMBLAS

On a hot and sunny day we made our way to the wonderful course at La Serena, thankfully as we started out a light breeze got up to help keep us cool. The course was in its usual excellent condition although the greens seemed soft and bobbly but they ran true and were receptive. The scoring on the day was a little below par with most people agreeing that the heat made it difficult to concentrate, the results being ass follows: Nearest the pin on hole 15 was Dave Somerville Nearest the pin on hole 17 was Lee Beckett Nearest the par 4 13th in 2 was Chris Flint Longest Drive on hole 18 was Tommy Clarke. Winner with 34 points was Kevin Keeler Runner up with 33 points was Alan Pickett. Next week we are at Alicante meet at the bar at 07:50.

SUCINA GOLF SOCIETY Tuesday, 19th August 2014 Our game this month was held at Las Ramblas. A first time for us as a Society to visit this course, and everyone, who had not played the course before, felt that the course was very interesting. The Course was in a very good condition and feedback was positive for a return visit. Something for our incoming 2015 Captain to consider? Certainly an enjoyable day was had by all, and the presentations were made back at Franc y Louise Bar in Sucina. A good choice of playing a Texas Scramble format as weather was very hot, with little wind. Overall results were:Wining Team: Sofie Ekberg, Bosse, Christine Comber & Colin Comber 59.7pts. Runners Up: Gary Smith, Wayne Harris, John Storey & Basil Trevaskis 60.7pts 3rd Team: Peter Robinson, Ron McKinley, Sue Grewer & Colin Griffiths 62.1pts Nearest the pins went to: Hole 6 - Bosse, Hole 10 - Sofie Ekberg, Hole 12 “ Mick the Grip” and Hole 14 - Ray Banks. Our next meeting is at Roda Golf on Tuesday 16th September and is our annual “ Captains Day”. Start list is on the Noticeboard in Franc & Louise Bar, Sucina or contact any Committee Member. All details can be found on our website:- www.sucinagolfsociety.com

Last Wednesday the society played Las Ramblas, a golf course which you either like or dislike which presents a challenge for those who are up for a challenge. It is not that well suited to high handicappers as there are a few longish carries off the tee which you have to make or its three off the tee. The society likes to play this course at least once a year. The fairways and greens were found to be in excellent condition. It was one of the hottest days of the summer but at Las Ramblas you can at least catch a bit of shade in the many trees scattered around the course. Because of the degree of difficulty of the course for some, the format of the competition was a 4 player Texas scramble which is great fun and a real team game in which everyone plays their part. A few more balls than usual were lost in the trees or down in the ravines. It was a close contest between the top 3 teams who returned respectable gross scores of around par and in the mid to lower 60’s when the adjustment for handicaps was taken into account. The winning team comprised Roy Kavanagh, Terry Smith, Ian Fogerty and David Johnson. The runners-up were Darryll Wright, Tony Patterson, Bill Howie and Simon Fullerton and in third place the team of John King, Keith Armstrong, Brian Airey and Pam Martin. The team which struggled the most in the heat with a sum total of ages of over three

hundred years was Dave Winchcombe, Ted Hooker, Trevor Hobbs and his better half Ann. On the way out of the golf course there are a few speed bumps which can be quite severe if you don’t notice them and slow down enough. One player, who will remain nameless, drives a bit like Lewis Hamilton, and hit one hard on the way in and the same one much, much harder on the way out. His poor passengers were lifted out of their seats and were still nursing sore heads, after “hitting the roof” when they got back to our base, the Quesada Country Club. Back at the Quesada Country Club the presentations were made accompanied by some cold liquid refreshment and a tasty hot and cold buffet, kindly provided on by mine hosts David & Anita. Our general secretary Pam Martin and handicap secretary Dave Winchcombe took a leisurely dip in the pool to cool off and who could blame them. The next game is at Vistabella on Wednesday 27 August and will be an Individual Stableford competition. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

‘Mike Probert talks Golf (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘La Peraleja - Update’ A few months ago we reported that La Peraleja had a budget of circa €120K to repair and re-sculpture the fairways with which they have had problems for many years and we thought the time was right for a follow up visit and report. Well it near rains less it pours or should we say IT NEVER RAINS! The plans for the repairs have been totally impacted upon by the continued drought plus a major problem with their ‘well’. La Peraleja have a well on the border of the course which goes down 250 metres to tap into a much needed water supply BUT there was a break in the pipe at the BOTTOM requiring 100 sections of pipe to be removed to conduct the repair impacting on time and finances. Interestingly enough the original source of the fairway problems was these wells because a large agricultural company based a few km away had reprocessed water and ‘dumped’ heavily salt laden residue back into the wells and as all the wells are ‘interlinked’ the water supply at La Peraleja was contaminated with salt and when used to water the courses killed the grass and left high levels of salt in the soil preventing grass re-growth. The water from the wells MUST be mixed with other water purchased at a cost pf circa €200k per annum before use on the course so this really is a costly business particularly for a course fighting to break even. The experts have visited the course and suggested a special grass which didn’t work and they are now awaiting an alternative grass BUT the costs of the repairs have escalated to nearer €200k. The course remains a good test of golf and the tees, greens and bunkers remain in a good condition and until the five fairways are repaired they will continue to offer green fee prices with buggies for less than €40 and the course is still well worth a game at such prices despite the problems with a few fairways We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. TORREVIEJA GOLF SOCIETY CHARITY MATCH Charity Match v Happy Wanderers GS at Lo Romero on 11th August 40 players took part in our annual Charity match against Happy Wanderers GS at the splendid Lo Romero course where the format was a better ball match play. There were 10 matches in total and all were played in a friendly and competitive spirit. In the end the final outcome was dependent upon the last game and when that ended in a half, the match for the first time in the 10 years that the 2 Societies have been playing this event finished in a tie. The winners for each team were as follows: TGS – Tom Clarke & Charlie Rodgers, Paul Wightman & Maurice Lea, Chris Byron & Gerry Williams and Liam Powell & Quentin Williams. HWGS – Stan Canter & Roy Tennant, John Dunkley & Eileen Woolley, Jeff Gresswell & Robert Johnson and Geoff Breakswell & Paul Tonks. Half points were won by John Mitton & Roy Hills, John Saunders & Alan James for TGS and Christine Wild & Kevin Peters and David Woolley & Janet Johnson for HWGS. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Bob McShane, Mick Reeves, Tommy Clarke and Kevin Peters. On conclusion of play sandwiches were provided by the Portobello Bar in Campoverde and a grand raffle was held which raised in excess of €400 for the HWGS Captain’s chosen charity AECC. The main

prize of a 3 litre bottle of whisky donated by TGS was won by Peter Flood. Christine Wild the HWGS Captain generously thanked the TGS Secretary Geoff Walters for his organisation of the event and ensuring that the day proved to be a resounding success. Many thanks to all players for providing prizes for the raffle and to John Glennon and all his staff at the Portobello Bar for the excellent service provided. Photo. Team Captains Christine Wild and John Saunders with the trophy and Peter Flood, the lucky recipient of the whisky.

TMGS MATCH REPORT - 20 AUGUST The last time we visited this course in the mountains, the wind was blowing a hooley and today, hardly a breath. The course, in itself, was in very good condition but sadly and unbeknown to us, the greens weren’t and in fact, they were the pits. That said, there were still some reasonable scores and a certain 2 handicap adjustments will be made. 5 Par three’s on this course and bottles of wine, kindly donated by Steve McGuinness were handed out to Vernon Brown, Chris Bellman, Paul Fairclough, Simon Lee and Steve Higgins. 5 players secured a “Two” and shared the pot, Vernon Brown, Paul Fairclough, Derek Sullivan, Ole Rong and Steve Higgins. The Best Guest award went to Scandinavian K Krog with a very excellent 40 points which was the best score on the day. In the Silver Division, it only needed 29 points for Roger Nilsen to claim 4th spot, Alex Goslan lost out to Mick Kennedy on the count back for 3rd and 2nd placing’s but way out in front was Ole Rong with 38 points. The Gold lads didn’t fare much better and it only required 32 points from the Captain and Vice-Captain to take 4th and 3rd spots with Steve Higgins being beaten on the count back system by John Eyre. In 2nd place, and only one point better was Alan Rixson with 33 points and this left Vernon Brown out on his own with a fine 37 points. Photo: Silver category winners

Our next game, Wednesday 27th August 2014 see’s us at Villamartin for a Medal competition so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY

By Mike Chapman We started the week with a Waltzer (1-2-3) with one score counting on the first hole, two on the second and three on the third and so on throughout the round. The weather was cloudy making playing conditions rather more comfortable than of late. Surprisingly the scoring was lower than normal with the winning score being only 81 points some 5 or 6 less than expected. The winning team was Lindsay Forbes, Bryan Neal, Rachel Leckey and Yvonne Phipps. It was our normal weekly stableford competition on Wednesday and the clear hot conditions returned which coupled with the tees being placed at the back of the tee boxes made life extremely difficult especially for those in Category 2. The only player to beat par was Lindsay Forbes with a superb 38 pts to win Category 1. The full results were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Lindsay Forbes 38 pts 2nd Olga Douglas 36 pts 3rd Bryan Neal 36 pts beating Ron Phipps on count back Cat 2. 1st Rod Bryant 33 pts 2nd Rod Doel 31 pts 3rd Geoff Biggerstaff 29 pts 2's Club: Rachel Leckey, Bryan Neal and Doug Wright The winner of the guest prize was Joke with 33 pts. On Friday we played a Bogey Bisque which is a singles game against the course. With a zero score equalling par there was some tremendous scoring with guest Angie Green taking first place with +7. The next four players scored +4 with Rod Doel taking second place on a count back from Rod Bryant, Allen McClusky and Geoff Biggerstaff. The importance of submitting a correct scorecard was highlighted with 2 of our lady members being disqualified for failing to record the actual number of shots taken, one of whom declared a score of +9!

At Altorreal - 21 August Even though it is still hot a fair few of us, 27 in all , went down to Altorreal to play in 6x6x6 stableford. Most people found their way successfully, all except the Captain who went on a sightseeing tour before arriving at the course. Everyone enjoys a team game and this was no exception, with much banter on the tee. We heliotropes set out knowing that there was one to score on the first six holes, two to score on the next six and three on the final six, so no pressure then, until you're the last to tee off and the other three have done a red arrows bomb burst with their shots. It wasn't that bad we did find a most of the balls. The course was in extremely good condition, it was obvious that a lot of work had been done to the course, both to surrounding areas and the greens. Thanks to the staff who always make us welcome. The devilish scores were: 1st John Featherstone, Bob (the Captain)Berry, Geoff Dowsett and Brian Coultate 72pts. 2nd Chris Nield, Dave Lewis, Brian Smith (+ a selected blind partner) 70pts. 3rd Tony Rowley, George Stewart, Paul Flanaghan and Meirion Roberts 69pts NTPs: Chris Nield hole 2, George Stewart hole 5, Meirion Roberts hole 10 and Dave Norton hole 14. Only one 2 was recorded, this was George Stewart The free game draw was won by Tony Rowley. Our away day at Lorca is two weeks away, with Roda following. Even though Roda is over subscribed it is still worth entering onto the reserve list as there are usually people dropping out nearer the date. Good golfing.

SEGUNDA NIGHTMARE CONTINUES FOR REAL MURCIA League President of Spain’s professional football league, Javier Tebas.

There has been much speculation this week about the future of Real Murcia, which had administrative relegation placed on it to Second Division ‘B’ for failing to meet debt and income obligations required by the statutes of La Liga. But it finally looks as though the LFP have got their way as, after a complicated legal tus-

sle, the league announced it would drop the club into Segunda B, Spanish football’s third division. Although as we go to press Murcia have postponed their first league fixture against UD Logrones and are still saying that they have more legal avenues to pursue. Murcia’s crime is that it has some €35 million in debts, including €13 million it owes

in back taxes to Hacienda which means that its ratio of debt to income is higher than the new league limit. The announcement was made by the League president of Spain’s professional football league, Javier Tebas, in Madrid on Friday while 300 Murcia fans gathered outside the league headquarters chanting “This league makes us sick.” But the president wasn’t moved. “Time has come to crack down on the league’s economic delinquents,” he said. Of course, Murcia fans don’t feel the same way. After all, last season they almost made it into La Liga, Spain’s top tier, finishing their Segunda A season proper in 4th place and just missing out on promotion to La Liga in the playoffs, and now they are to be thrown into the purgatory that is the Spanish third division. Inside the league nerve centre, w hile Murcia fans protested outside, Tebas talked tough about enforcing the new financial rules. But while Tebas says quite categorically that this is the end of the saga, according to Club President Jesus Samper, nothing is further from reality, so hang on… this might get even more complicated yet…

TORREVIEJA FUTBOL SALA Football Sala or Futsal is a variant of Association Football that is played on a smaller field and mainly played indoors. It can be considered a version of five-a-side football. Its name comes from the Portuguese futebol de salão, which can be translated as "hall football". It was developed in Brazil and Uruguay in the 1930s and 1940s and is now extremely popular in Spain, currently ranked number 2 in the world. This fast growing sport is particularly beneficial to youngsters and their development of the game helping to improve their technical proficiency. Because of the very nature of the game, and the ball, it helps to develop speed, skill and speed of decision making in players, just one reason why youngsters in Brazil and Spain are far more advanced when they eventually go into the 11 a side game. In Torrevieja the Football Sala Club operates from the Sports Palace where it is scheduled to start training once again on 1 September. FC PINATAR MAKE TRADITIONAL PRE SEASON OFFERING

Camps and Fabra at the opening ceremony

Castellon Airport, a pet project of the disgraced former head of the provincial government of Castellón, Carlos Fabra, who was sentenced to four years in jail in 2013 for tax evasion, continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons, as a previously signed sponsorship contract with local third division football club CD Castellon leaves the Valencian Regional Government with no alternative but to honour the 660,000 euro agreement with the near bankrupt club. The unused Castellón Airport (Aerocas) signed up with the football club at the start of the 2009-2010 season. The regional government owns 99 percent of Aerocas, which cost €170 million and was officially opened in 2011, but has yet to see a plane land or take off there. Just one of many debt ridden Spanish football clubs, CD Castellon began bankruptcy proceedings last year. It currently owes its creditors 5.3 million euro. In a statement last week a spokesman said that the sponsorship money was of “substantial importance” in helping safeguard the club’s immediate future. Meanwhile the Regional Government, which is in dire financial straits itself, is currently running a €3.5 billion deficit of its own. All in all, sponsorship deals agreed by the empty airport with Villarreal football club and other sporting entities, including the Alex Debón motorcycle team, are reported to have been worth a total of €35 million.

Club Manager, Miguel Del Riego The players, coaching staff and administrators of Pinatar FC celebrated their traditional offering of flowers and food to the patrón saint of San Pedro del Pinatar, San Pedro Apostle, and the Virgen del Carmen last Thursday evening. The Pinatarense team captains, Pepe Sanchez and Dani Pana, together with coach Carlos Trasante, presented the offerings at a religious ceremony held in the parish church.Pinatar FC get their Tercera season underway next weekend with a home fixture to Alhama.
