NEW HO MES BEING INCREASINGLY DESER TED AND ABANDONED

Tel: 96 673 0057

As thousands of abandoned homes lie empty and deserted across the Vega Baja region thieves are stripping them bare, returning to the sites time and time again, taking everything of value they can possibly carry and rarely, if ever, being challenged by security or police. Properties that were being marketed only a few weeks ago for sums in excess of 100,000 euro now lie derelict. Moisés Cruz, a member of the Anti Corruption Group,

Plataforma Anticorrupción Defensa de la Huerta, a group that raises awareness about the effects of speculation and unrestricted construction in the Vega Baja says “They are taking everything……aluminium, copper, doors, window frames, iron, tiles, air conditioners, even bricks. They leave behind nothing but abandoned plots, empty buildings, crumbling walls and roofs. Everything is susceptible to thieves.” One such abandoned edifice is a former four star spa hotel, the Villa De Catral Hotel Spa, which shut down in 2010, now just a shell of its former extravagance. It’s difficult to understand why the Orihuela Ayuntamiento have allowed the construction of 7 new apartment blocks along Calle Clavo while 200 or more properties lie abandoned.

From Page One Members of the group have spent the last year creating a photographic archive, documenting hundreds of derelict building that were put up during the good times and now left in ruins following the property crash. Cruz says “They were frenzied years, and now everybody is paying the price. I have details showing entire blocks of homes, apartments, town houses, luxury villas. But what are they now. It makes me cry. We could be walking through the streets of Syria or Iraq, many are little more than bomb zones. And all the time we see more and more evictions, families being thrown out onto the streets for little or no reason. We live in a very unjust world.” Cruz highlights one such development in Almoradi where some of the abandoned shells are now being squatted in by drug addicts and tramps. Another is in Callosa de Segura where the duplex properties were selling for between 100,000 and 200,000 euros. They now lie completely abandoned, just empty shells. Rather more locally is the once planned luxury development along the Calle Clavo just off Ctra de Villamartin on the Orihuela Costa. This promotion, of over 30 top of the range 3 storey town houses, were to be priced at 250,000 euro plus but, as the site neared completion the constructor predictably

went bust and the site was abandoned for the scavengers and thieves to move in. Immediately behind it is an abandoned block of flats that was also partially built at about the same time. There is another similar development nearby in Benferri where the wind blows over the roofs of the deserted buildings. The list just goes on and on, and unfortunately it also continues to grow. And of course with the developers falling into bankruptcy the developments are increasingly owned by banks which seem to be of little concern. “In some cases, with just a minimal investment, many could be used as social housing for the homeless or for those who cannot currently afford their own home," said Cruz. Indeed, also in Villamartin, three completed blocks of apartments that were originally built by the Orihuela Council to fulfil that purpose also lie abandoned, but rather than offer the properties as social housing the Ayuntamiento prefer to pay for the services of a full time team of security officers to stop the scavengers from moving in, something they have been doing for over 4 years. When we asked them what the future of the apartments might be, and why they chose not to release them to those in need, they declined to answer.

Yet despite all these abandoned buildings the Orihuela government continues to issue licenses on plots adjacent to these developments, with at least 7 new apartment blocks currently under construction within a distance of a thousand metres. Unlike the Orihuela planners however, it would seem that those in authority in a few of the neighbouring localities, the planners, the bankers and the builders are occasionally blessed with common sense. One such example was in Almoradi (population 20,000) early this year when the council refused permission to construct 11,000 new homes to accommodate more than 50,000 inhabitants. Another such decision was recently taken by the High Court which quashed a San Miguel de Salinas (population 7,000) plan because of the lack of an adequate environmental assessment. Developers there were hoping to build up to 40,000 new homes which would increase the population of the town by about 100,000 people. With an economic recovery seemingly just around the corner let’s hope that the increasing pattern of new housing developments doesn’t once again turn the coast into a wall of cement as a new breed of greedy developers look to making quick fortunes at the expense of the credulous public.

Orihuela Mayor thanks Supporters on Facebook The mayor continues to recover recover at home

Following on from his recent heart attack and subsequent surgery, the mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, who has been recovering at home and away from the limelight, has started a gradual return to the public eye, first taking to Facebook to thank his supporters. “After a month disappeared for an obvious reason”, his update read, “I would like to express my thanks” to everybody who has shown an interest and sent messages of support. Posting a picture of a freshfaced and relaxed politician, he continued, “As you can see, I am fine. Recovery is going according to what has been planned and shortly, when the doctors and I consider it appropriate, I'll be back to work”. It is hoped that the mayor will return in a matter of weeks, ready to face the next wave of battles as he struggles to govern the municipality as the head of a team who are in the minority, faced with the perpetual “no” objections to any changes or improvements by the opposing PP and CLR collaboration, stran-

gled and locked into a situation where no tabled motion will be approved, irrespective of the merits to benefit the people of the municipality. Despite being in a “bubble” away from the stresses of Orihuela during his recovery, Guillén has still faced an attack via Facebook by a group supporting the electoral reform that would see the politician with the most votes automatically elected mayor. With the Los Verdes, Guillén received 10% of the votes in the last election and still became mayor, whereas the PP received 45%, according to the critics, which would automatically have led to, as Guillén explained, the automatically appointed mayor from the Partido Popular facing a string of corruption and criminal charges, as is the case with many of the opposition PP members, rather than the current situation with Guillén at the helm. Concluding his status update, Guillén concluded by thanking, once again, “the support of the people who have helped me”, and whilst looking forward to his return, thanks “everybody for being there”.

COUNCILLOR HITS BACK AT FILTHY STREETS CLAIM The councillor for the coast of Orihuela, Martina Scheurer of the Los Verdes green party, has hit back this week over allegations made by Bob Houliston of the CLARO political group, that the streets of the Orihuela Costa are “filthier” than ever before.

Washing down Cabo Roig’s Roig’s streets streets early on Thursday mor ning The press release from CLARO stated that “There is widespread anger at the filthy state of Orihuela Costa. C.L.A.RO. has never heard such strong feelings expressed. The streets are dirty. Litter is everywhere. Garden rubbish accumulates and accumulates sometimes not being removed for weeks. The beaches are cleaned superficially, scratching the surface of the sand but not being cleaned in depth. To save paying overtime, they are not cleaned after their busy use on Saturdays and are consequently left in a filthy state for their even busier use on Sundays. Seaweed is s allowed to stay where it is deposited along the beaches and not collected and left to dry in proper piles until it can be removed. Shamefully some people have to scavenge for food from rubbish containers beside supermarkets. Since the streets are not cleaned, the remains of food are left to litter these streets thereby encouraging the appearance of rats.” Whilst accepting that there is still a lot to be done to solve the problem of clean streets, Scheurer laments that this has always been a problem, “It was a problem before, when the PP were in charge, it was a problem when Mr Houliston was in charge, it was a problem when Mr Mancebo was in charge, it”, a testament which is clear from the countless reports and complaints on the website of the PP in Orihuela complaining about the same, and the numerous reports in the press. “It was a problem last year when I was in charge”, continues Scheurer, “but I can honestly say that I think things have improved over last year”. Acknowledging that there are a few “black spots” around the area, Scheurer also points out that Houliston has not approached her or the town hal with the current list of issues he sent to the press,

nor, according to the town hall records, have the residents themselves reported the problem before and requested cleaning. Scheurer has also defended her position by hitting back at Houliston´s lack of action. “It is far too easy to complain when in opposition, but not so easy to take the action necessary to make the improvements. Mr Houliston knows the difficulties we have in changing staff numbers or rotas, transferring resources from the city to the coast etc, but all he did was leave the post without fighting for the coast, which he had promised to do. Nobody pushed him, he had the opportunity to make the changes he complains about, but he gave up and left”. That said, the department has been able to call on resources from other areas, a time consuming and bureaucratic process, but a process which has seen the powerful water jet machine and its crew brought from the city to the coast, a move which was planned some time ago, which is now working its way around the coastal zone cleaning some of the most stubborn areas such as near commercial zones, and cleaning the bins and other elements of infrastructure. Tipping has been reduced in a number of areas, and, although Scheurer agrees “there is still much to be done”, test areas where the town hall has focused on have resulted in owners of some private plots fencing off their land, as is a requirement, preventing tipping on these sites.

Having proved a success in the test phase in Mil Palmeras, that process of requesting cooperation by land owners will now continue in some of the other most hard hit areas on the coast. In the land where signs and barriers are removed, action is being taken to replace those blockades and reduce tipping once again, as soon as the areas in question are cleared. The team of workers provided under a scheme which offered unemployed residents the chance to work are continuing on the coast, clearing streets of weeds and rubbish, a service never provided before on this scale, and which can be seen by simply driving around the coastal zone where the men and women have been working tirelessly throughout the summer months. Seaweed is collected on a regular basis, “of course if I go to the beach and see seaweed it may not be collected as often as I would like”, explains Scheurer, but the collection service has already picked up some 1,404 tons off the beaches, more than last year, which is piled up before removal to allow it to dry, partly to avoid the additional and historic cost of transporting sand and water with the seaweed, and partly to ensure that the sand returns to the beaches, as is a requirement of the beach authorities. That said, the service has already cost in excess of 70,000 euro for the processing alone, not including the staff, vehicles and fuel to transport it, which can only be done in Crevillente, due to the restrictions of Orihuela being tied to a so called “Plan Zonal”. A restriction that the town hall are trying to get out of, so as to avoid the reality that treating seaweed costs more than disposing of the green waste due to the monopoly of the company in Crevillente which charge an “extortionate” rate. With many residents and visitors apparently still complaining to CLARO about the state of the Orihuela Costa, there are numerous who have also agreed with Scheurer that the streets are a lot better this year. It is perhaps obvious that perfection is a long way away, but we can all do our bit by not throwing litter or rubbish in the street, putting waste and clippings out at the appropriate times, and, perhaps more importantly, contacting the town hall for advice as to when to put rubbish out, and reporting problems, so that everybody can contribute to a cleaner Orihuela Costa in the future.

MISSING STREET SIGNS TO BE REPLACED A company named Api Movilidad S.L. has been awarded a 325,957 euro contract with Orihuela town hall this week, to maintain, replace and provide missing street name signs across the municipality. The first zone assigned as a priority for the company will be the Orihuela Costa area, where a recent audit revealed that there are 642 missing street name signs and 704 house identifiers absent. Not only has this made it very difficult for residents and visitors to find their way around at times, it has led to confusion hen emergency services have had to attend incidents, and may well constitute towards an electoral low offence, as denounced many years ago by the CLARO political group in 2007, whilst the municipality was governed by the Partido Popular. Now the contract has been awarded, once the town hall has set out the plans of priority with the company, the work should commence in around 90 days. Meanwhile, the town hall has still not received a response from the Correos postal service regarding the suspension of some home deliveries on the coast from the 1st of September. The acting mayor, Antonio Zapata, had written to them to ask for the temporary suspension of the cut until the courts resolve if this would be legal or not, but they have failed to respond. The courts have acted quickly however and agreed that there is a case for a precautionary suspension of the cessation of deliveries, but the planned actions of the post office apparently seem to suggest that the service will be stopped, and would subsequently have to be dealt with through the courts.

FLAMINGO NUMBERS INCREASE IN LA MATA

The natural Wildlife Park of the Lagunas de La Mata-Torrevieja has so far welcomed over 1,000 flamingos this year breaking its own record for the nesting birds. The figure was confirmed by the Department of the Environment, which said that the previous highest figure was recorded in 2008 when 750 of the birds spent the season nesting, a number that dropped considerably in the following years. The same sources explained that "the excellent water conditions and the increased presence of the brine shrimp, a species of crustacean that flamingos are especially fond of, in the lagoon of La Mata have led to this dramatic increase in the population, and if conditions don’t change too much in the lagoon, the flamingos could stay all year. Another fact that confirms the increasing numbers in the park comes from the breeding census conducted by DoE staff last June. This study has found

"a dramatic increase" in the breeding population of Gaviota picofina (Larus genei). Although there was no census conducted last year the 2014 figure shows that 620 chicks have been produce. The estimated population of this bird in Spain is around 1,000 pairs, so the Natural Park of La MataTorrevieja, has 60 percent of the population, "and continues to be a valuable haven for the conservation of this species," according the Department. One of the birds said to be especially appreciated by ornithologists is the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus), a small wader in the plover bird family, where 74 nesting pairs have been recorded. In many parts of the world, it had become difficult for this species to breed on beaches because of disturbance from the activities of humans or their animals so to see their numbers increasing locally is said to be of particular significance.

TURTLE RISK The body of a two-metre long turtle was found near the beach in Huelva this week, showing signs of decomposition. One of the largest breeds of turtles, the species faces an increased threat of extinction, a state which has been declared as “imminent”. Eating the daily equivalent of their own weight, overfishing poses a risk to their food supplies, as does the increasing threat of pollution from engine oil and vessel strikes. They are also prone to digesting waste products in the sea, such as plastic bags which they mistake for jellyfish, being caught in fishing nets and face an increase problem in finding safe places to lay their eggs.

GARDENS AT RISK Residents of Alicante have complained to the city council about the neglect currently being experienced by the centre’s parks and gardens. COASTAL BOUNDARY MOVE MAY MEAN LOSS OF LAND The department of costas in Alicante have issued a public consultation notification, relating to the change in the coastal boundaries of the Orihuela Costa and nearby areas. The councillor for the coast from Orihuela town hall, Martina Scheurer from the Los Verdes green party, says that the notice was issued on Friday the 22nd of August, giving the required 15 day period of consultation. The document can be examined in the Ministerial offices in Alicante, to see exactly what impact the change in the coastal boundary might have, but the most likely outcome is that the boundary line move further inland, and may result in some coastal properties losing land. “Unlikely to have an adverse impact on actual properties or buildings, there are a number of properties which currently have land which reaches all the

way to the edge of a coastal footpath”, the councillor explains. “It is quite possible that the extension of the boundary line would move into the grounds of these properties, which may well result in owners having to surrender some of the land they believe is theirs”. As it is a governmental issue from a national level, Orihuela town hall is powerless to act on the changes, and have they been issued with the plans themselves. However, they will be sending the municipal architect and a group of technicians to Alicante this week, so that they can examine the effects of the changes to the zone. Before the end of the consultation period, members of the public are also able to examine the plans in the office in Alicante, and raise a formal protest should there be an impact on a property or grounds in which a home is currently located, but this must be done within the 15 day period.

PROPERTY MORTGAGES INCREASE BY 19% IN JUNE According to data released last week by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of mortgages on homes that were registered in the month of June has risen by 19% on the same month in 2013 which now means that home foreclosures are back into positive territory after two consecutive months of negative rates of 13.4% in April and 3.4% in May. The average value of the mortgages on homes hit in the sixth month of the year was 98 582 euros, 1.3% more than the same month of 2013, while borrowed capital increased by 20.5% year on year, to 1689.4 million.

By region, those recording the largest number of mortgages on homes were Madrid (3,481), Andalucia (2900) and Catalonia (2,435) although there were declines in Aragon (-19.3%) and La Rioja (-5.8%). The rest recorded positive annual rates, with the largest rallies in Galicia (+ 92.5%), Extremadura (+ 66%) and Navarra (+ 64.9%).

RUSSIANS ARE THE BIGGEST INVESTORS The average price of a house purchased last year in Spain by a foreign investor was 381,860 euro. However, Russian buyers, on average, paid 678,424 euro for their purchases, making them leaders in single purchase investors in the country. In second place were buyers from Germany, spending an average of 338,716 euro, Belgians spent 346,728 euro, The British are in fourth place with an average investment of 190,633 euro, and the French are in fifth place with 171,644 euro. The data has been released by the association of registrars, which also reveals that the province of Alicante is responsible for approximately 27% of all sales in Spain, with the Russian market also being the most important here. The information also concurs with data

released by the portal Fotocasa, which also confirms that Alicante is od prime importance for the Russian and British markets. Within the British buyer´s profile, the average investment of 190,633 euro is spent on an apartment, flat or small terraced house, with an average space of 138 square metres. As for the Russians, they mostly favour upscale houses, large apartments, townhouses or detached properties, with an average of 462 square metres.

AECC CLOSE CHILDRENS CANCER CENTRE A cancer care centre, specifically designed to treat children in the Valencia region, has closed down, with the closest centre now, the only one remaining, being in Madrid. Since opening in the year 2000, the Ministry of education and culture donated the building to the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, AECC, for their free use for a period of 25 years. The centre had the capacity to accommodate children and families in six double rooms, with other auxiliary rooms, including a games room and study area, with a teacher provided by the department of education to provide continual education to children being treated in the centre. Children undergoing treatment could use the facilities, along with a companion, such as a parent, either staying over or just as a brief recuperation visit, all for free. According to María José Mínguez from the AECC, the cost of maintain the centre, which had a coordinator and two support staff, was 100,000 euro per year. In 2013, the board itself acknowledged in their financial report that the “economic health” of the centre is “very good”, and that it represents 7% of their annual expenditure, less than their annual expense for smoking cessation, which is 8%, both considerably less than the 18% spent on marketing in 2013, although considerably more than the 3% spent on prevention campaigns. In a letter sent to the local representative, the President of the AECC in Valencia, Tomás Trenor Puig, a lawyer who holds the distinguished title of The Marquis del Turia, a Spanish noble title originally granted by Alfonso XIII in 1909, explains the “difficult decision”, by detailing how in the last five years the occupation of residence has been reduced by half. Part of the reduced requirement in the centre for children has been blamed on the Hospital la Fe, which is said to “prefer” other options that guarantee continual care for their patients, and in the case of an emergency arising, a transfer from the AECC centre to La Fe would take between 20 and 30 minutes, which has “led us to rethink the effort to keep up the residence”, the letter continues. One other consideration believed to have been responsible for the decline in numbers is the opening of another new centre for children

just 3 years ago. Closer to the La Fe hospital, Ronal McDonald House, which is sponsored by McDonald Foundation, offers 16 rooms, more than the AECC centre, but has the added benefit of not being exclusive to cancer patients, but for children with any condition requiring a few days accommodation near a hospital because they undergo treatments that do not require admission. However, many people are not taking the news with the acceptance that the Marquis may have hoped, with many complaining both verbally and in writing at the closure, with such strong comments

including “even if the number of resident children has reduced by half, that is still 3 children who have received continual and uninterrupted attention” to their health needs. With the representatives of the AECC in Valencia collecting and contributing just over 300,000 euro, many people are now questioning their financial contribution to the AECC, given that the funding has been withdrawn from the centre for children, it is hoped that the decision can be reversed, but hope can sometimes only lead to disappointment.

ALICANTE DRIVERS ARE FIFTH MOST DANGEROUS

Drivers on the roads of the Valencia region are responsible for creating some of the most dangerous roads in the whole of Spain, with more drivers in the Alicante province seemingly unable to adhere to the rules of the roads, creating the fifth highest place in the country for serious traffic violations, resulting in arrest. Officers from the Guardia Civil traffic department arrested 3,576 people Valencia for serious traffic safety offences in 2013, although the figure was 4.1% less than the previous year, according to the official data. Of the total in the region, 1,596 were the province of Valencia, while 1,484 were in Alicante, the remaining 496 in Castellon. The provincial figure puts Valencia in third place, behind Sevilla, were 2.217 drivers were charged, and second place Madrid South with

1,769, in fourth place is Pontevedra with 1,525, and then Alicante with 1,484. The majority of infractions were related to drugs and alcohol, followed by speeding and then license issues. Nationally, the arrest figure is 30,117 people, 9.3% less than the previous year, of which the majority once more, 18,169, were due to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In terms of safer roads, the biggest drop was recorded in La Rioja, with a 26.1% reduction, followed by Extremadura, with a 25.1% drop. During the August clampdown on speed, a total of 40,447 drivers were caught speeding nationally, according to the DGT traffic department, in the campaign that ran between the 18th and 24th of August. The figure represents 5.1% of the 791,478 drivers who were checked. Of those vehicles subject to a speed check, 440,416 were on conventional roads, representing around 60%, as this is where most fatal and serious speed related accidents occur. Of that number, 23,100 drivers, some 5.2%, were caught driving at speeds in excess of the permitted limit. As for motorway speeders, of the 351,062 vehicles checked, a total of 17,327 drivers were caught speeding, some 4.9 %. However, 5 drivers were reported for serious driving offences, travelling at 80 kilometres per hour more than the permitted limit on the road. In addition to a hefty fine, those drivers also face the risk of prison.

WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED? Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

When you discover you’ve been burgled As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a breakin or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.

Peace-of-mind with Linea Directa We understand that your peace-of-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.

Hold-up outside the home In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documentsare quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed. A new six-part BBC One drama, Our Zoo, starts this week and will follow the inspiring real story of the Mottershead family who established Chester Zoo in the 1930s. With incredible single-mindedness, George Mottershead, played by Lee Ingleby, drove himself and his family to realise his ambition to transform a ramshackle house, on the outskirts of Chester, into a unique zoo that would change the way animals are kept for forever. The drama follows George’s inspiring and challenging journey as he moves his wife, two young daughters and parents - along with a monkey and a parrot - into a draughty old stately home. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Runways or Community? Visitors to the island of Gran Canaria are often surprised to learn that the island hosts the third largest airport in Spain. Due to the rapidly increasing popularity of the island as an attractive and successful tourist destination, the airport has, until recently, been close to maximum capacity. Over the last few years, a programme of refurbishment, redevelopment and extension has taken place to ensure that the airport retains its prestige position and meets the needs of the island. Indeed, over the last few days, an impressive new terminal building has been opened, but the one thing that is still missing is a second runway, which is needed in order to absorb increased capacity of flights, as well as larger aircraft. A second runway has been planned since 2001, but the downside was that it would necessitate the demolition of an entire Canarian village, Ojos de Garza. Needless to say, the villagers were not too impressed with the plans and embarked upon a series of disruption for many years in an attempt to persuade developers that they should build the second runway elsewhere. On a small island, the choices are limited, but the villagers were determined to ensure that their views were fully taken into account. Legal battles, hunger strikes, marches and disobedience has followed over the years, with the 5000 villagers remaining united against both

the threats and temptations thrown at them. Most of the residents The village of Ojos de Garza with refused to sell their properties to the airport in the background the developers since it would be difficult to buy new homes on the island. They wished to remain as a community and stay together. Since the end of the Second World War, the UK has seen social problems as a result of mistakes made by well meaning planners and architects who demolished what were regarded as terraced ‘slums’ in favour of high-rise flats. Many such monstrosities were built in cities across the UK, as well as in other parts of Europe. As well as disregarding the need for green space, and play areas for children, many planners forgot that community cohesion is the essential component for any society to thrive. Are your child’s eyes prepared to go back to school?

During the first 12 years of our lives, as much as 80% of learning is accomplished through our vision. Yet, one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. Once children go to school, good eye-sight is crucial to keep up with their studies. Experts believe that many learning disabilities could be vision related as they may not be able to read the blackboard or text books. Specsavers Opticas suggest that a child should have their first eye examination at around three years old, as the earlier things are detected, the easier they are to rectify without delaying the child’s development. This September they are advising all parents to incorporate a thorough eye test into their back to school routine so they can be prepared if their child does need glasses. The process of taking an eye test for a child is simple. Firstly, the optometrist will ask the parent or guardian about any relevant family history and any

problems their child may be experiencing. Then several child-friendly tests will be undertaken, using special charts and other materials to help children indicate what they can see and how clearly. They will test the vision of each eye and will check whether they work properly together. They will also measure the child’s focusing ability and the health of the child’s eyes before discussing the results with the parents. If a child does need glasses, there are some great ranges which tick all the boxes of fashion and durability. Kids that wear glasses can now be the envy of all their friends with fun frames in bright colours sporting their favourite character or toy. Popular ranges include Disney, Hello Kitty, Gruffalo, Star Wars™, Simpsons and LEGO and Specsavers have their own kids and teen ranges. Until the end of November 2014 Specsavers Opticas are offering free eye tests for children and adults. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

HEALTH OUTREACH HELPS THOUSANDS During their visits to shopping centres around both Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, nursing staff from the Torrevieja health department have given helpful advice to more than 12,000 people. The travelling health awareness campaign offered information on a wide range of subjects, spanning from topics such as the prevention of melanoma, avoiding heat stroke, healthy eating and natural childbirth. Under the campaign banner “Un verano a tu salud”, the visitors were given fresh fruit, played games and received healthy tips in a productive and fun manner, which the department of health now hope to continue to provide all year round. Future tours will deal with specific groups and specific medical conditions, visiting schools and social groups, looking at subjects like osteoporosis and pelvic floor workshops, amongst others, all with the aim to encourage the age old mantra that “prevention is better than cure”. More details can be obtained through their website, www.torreviejasalud.com, and then clicking on “Agenda”, although the next tours are still being put together, so make sure you bookmark the website and keep checking back.

WORLD HERITAGE SITE El castillo de Almirra, 50km inland from Benidorm, is to become the first site declared to be a World Heritage site of special historical significance by even though it is currently being rebuilt. The castle was the site where the crucial pact was made between Aragon and Castile which drew the boundaries between the two realms. It was also the location where, in 1244, an agreement between King James I and the then Prince Alfonso of Castile, gave birth to the former Kingdom of Valencia.

A POLITICAL LOT After enjoying a two-month holiday, deputies sitting in Les Corts resume their parliamentary duties on 16 September, with the general policy debate, one of the most important events of the new session, almost two weeks after Valencia’s schoolchildren returned to their duties.

ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE The courts in Torrevieja are investigating ex-councillor José Manuel Pizana, who may face charges of forgery, in relation with a case which was shelved in which the Partido Popular held an election rally in an unauthorized building. The politician testified that he was not at the meeting where the arrangements for the rally were made, but the certified minutes state that he did attend.

TOURISM AWARDS FOR ELCHE FIESTA The Valencia government has awarded the status of “Tourist Interest” to ten events that take place around the area. The firework spectacular of the Nit de l'Albà of Elche, the artichoke Fiesta de la Alcachofa de Benicarló, music festival Mano a Mano de Buñol, the burning Fallas de Benicarló and the medieval Fiestas in honour of San José de Villena have received the label of Turístico Autonómico interest. Three events are now of Fiestas de Interés Turístico Provincial, which are the Mostra Internacional de Pallassos de Xirivella, the Fiesta de San Gil de Enguera and the Fiesta de Reis de Vila-real. Finally, two events have been given the local interest award, the Maderada de Cofrentes and the Pujà i Rodà a Sant Roc de Burjassot. The Valencia regional tourist board has said in a statement that the reason for the awards is to enhance the promotion of the festival of the three provinces as tourist attractions. The awards are of “special significance” and feature cultural and historic elements. Obtaining this honorary distinction contributes significantly to the promotion of festivals celebrated in the three provinces and is indispensable for obtaining the Declaration of National Interest. Now, Valencia has a total of 12 fiestas of the “Interés Turístico Internacional” standard, 18 of “Interés Turístico Nacional”, 27 of “Interés Turístico Autonómico”, 48 with the badge of “Interés Turístico Provincial” and a total of 39 with the “Interés Turístico Local” accreditation.

SANTA POLA’S TOWER OF DISCOVERY Heading from the Torrevieja area to Alicante along the N332 coastal road takes in a journey right through the centre of the salt lakes at Santa Pola.

With a richness of flora and fauna, the countless different breeds of birds are often visible from the road, the most striking perhaps being the flamingos, although they do tend to shy away from the locations where cars are allowed to stop, thus making them a little elusive, or at least a little shy. In fact, whilst we are on the subject of flamingos, it might be of interest to know that they are returning to the area in great numbers. This year, the bird census reveals more than 1,000 flamingos visiting the Salinas of Torrevieja and La Mata, breaking the previous record of 2008 when 750 were recorded, dropping significantly from then on. But our journey of discovery today takes us to a building of interest along the route, located adjacent to a parking lay by, on the left hand side as you drive towards Alicante, there is a lone tower standing firm, overlooking the salt lakes. That tower is the Torre de Tamarit, which appeared almost derelict for many recent years, until recently restored, the ruins were protected by two Royal decrees, marking the building as being of historic interest. Originally built in 1552, under the rule of King Felipe II, the strategic location between the fortress of Santa Pola and the tower of del Pinet,

near La Marina, the primary role of the tower was not for watching the sea of the east coast, but was for providing defence of Elche, and as a communication link between the two main military sites. Communication was provided by smoke in the day and fire by night, with the flat location making visibility particularly good. With the background of the salt lakes, and the resident birds, plus the position of the sun, make the location ideal for some stunning photographs, and with information boards provided at the site, there is much more still to be discovered. There are two things to warn of however, the first being that the lay by is only accessible off the road in the direction coming from Alicante towards Torrevieja, and the area has been known to attract opportunistic thieves in the past, so always lock your valuables away, as you would anywhere else.

The Tyrius association conducts the report annually, looking at the overall cost of schooling, including books, uniforms and school supplies for the start of classes. As an average cost, the price does of course differ depending on areas, as it does depending on the educational level of the child. Secondary education is the most expensive, averaging out at 899 euro per child, whereas educating the youngest family members works out at an average of 421 euro, their report says. High school students will cost 848 euro on average, and primary pupils around 698 euro. The report indicates that the average cost of uniforms is 287 euro for toddlers, 346 euro at Primary level and for Secondary school the cost is 416 euro. The cost of textbooks works out at around 220 euro per child, although this cost can be significantly reduced if the books are second hand, and even better if a sibling can hand them down, but this cost is considerably less than those students who have to commit to attend the more technologically advanced centres, where the cost of acquiring a tablet computer works out at around 515 euro for the first year, including the necessary licences for the downloaded materials and books. The association advise shopping around for products to get the best deals, visiting “book banks” for cheaper text books, and consulting with other parents and parental groups who may offer share and exchange options, thus reducing the considerable financial burden.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY

Clarkes Bar Golf Society

W/E 29 AUG 14 BY Mike Chapman We started the week with a best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the par 3's. Again one team was head and shoulders above the rest winning by a 10 pt margin. The winners with a remarkable 106 pts were Joyce and Allen McClusky, Brian Green and Peter Dunn. On Wednesday it was our usual weekly Stableford competition and it was clear that the high temperature is taking its toll on both the numbers and scoring as there was only sufficient numbers for one category and the top score was a mere 35 pts. The winner was the ever reliable Lindsay Forbes with Peter Dunn in second place with 32 pts. There were 4 players on 31 pts with the two securing prizes on a count back being Roger Tunstall and Ron Phipps. The unlucky pair missing out were partners in crime Tom Hardie and Dougie Wright. Tom however managed to bag a share of the 2's Club along with Brian Green and Rod Bryant who managed an eagle 2 on the Par 4 fifth hole. Fridays result will be included in next weeks report.

This week we ventured once again to the seve designed course at Alicante for our weekly stableford event. We found the course to be in its usual excellent condition with soft receptive greens which were a little slow but consistent. The weather turned out to be blisteringly hot as the surrounding houses sheltered any breeze that was blowing. This led to players wilting towards the end of the round and 1 player retiring altogether. As a result no-one managed to hit the 18th green in 2 but the other results were: Nearest the pin on hole 3 was Robert Wardrop. Nearest the pin on hole 12 and the longest drive on hole 16 was Liam Powell. Nearest the pin on the par 5 10th in 3 was Tommy Clarke. Winner with 35 points was George Thomas Runner up with 34 points was Kevin Keeler. Next week we revisit the other seve course at Peraleja for our 4th eclectic round meet at the bar at 08:00

BULL FLANAGAN GOLF SOCIETY AUGUST MATCH REPORT For their August meeting 32 members of the Bull Flanagan Golf Society headed up the motorway toward Alicante and visited the very popular and well maintained Alenda golf course, which has very reasonable rates for golf societies but this course now also charges the 150 euro surcharge imposed by the Valencia Federation. As this course is a reasonable distance from our base this gave society members a bit more time to enjoy an early bacon sarnie and coffee prepared by our landlord Chris Stott at the Bull Flanagan Pub adjacent to the Marquesa golf course. On arrival and once payment had been made to the Caddy Master then it was possible to hand out the appropriate buggy keys to members and then off they went to collect the clubs for an earlier start. It is normal for this golf course to be in excellent playing condition and today was no exception, and this is one of the reasons why it is a popular choice for the society members. Although this course is not easy it does offer a reasonable chance to score well providing you keep to the fairways and avoid the rough areas especially on the narrower fairways and the water which is in play on three of the holes. The longer holes do favour the big hitters so all other players need to exercise control using the benefit of their extra handicap shots where applicable. All society members who signed up to visit Alenda for today’s match were expecting good weather and they were not disappointed. Also all of them were looking forward to an excellent day’s golf and hopefully getting a very reasonable individual score to add to their Player of the Year portfolio. Today’s match was the last opportunity for members to increase their Player of the Year portfolio score and as it was close at the top of the leader board a good score was essential to have a chance to win this year’s trophy and join the previous winners on the Roll of Honour Board. The person who held his nerve was Barry Grinsell who takes this year’s honours. . The greens whilst in good condition were quite slow as the surface was longer than normal obviously to protect the greens from the strong sunlight and this made reading the direction of run and distance that much more difficult, however combined with excellent fairways this led to a most interesting and excellent day out for our members and guests. Only one player managed to beat the course and that was Steve Edwards with 37 points leaving the chasing pack two points further

back. Steve Edwards was todays winner and he was followed by Barry Grinsell with 35 points. Two other players were a further two points back on 33 points and using count back this honour went to Phil Harris. Winner of the front 9 was Brian Ead with 18 points and the back 9 was Brian Smith with 17 points. Nearest the pin winners on the par three holes were hole 3 no one managed to get the green, hole 5 Brian Ead, holes 12 John Stone and hole 16 Trevor Taylor. Winnner of the 28ers free draw was Dave Smith and the football card was Ian Alison. After the golf players returned to the Bull Flanagan in Quesada for the prize winner’s presentation ceremony and at the same time sample a refreshing drink and also to enjoy a tasty meal of their individual choice from a selection of menus provided and prepared by Chris and his staff. Again without question the members are very appreciative of the quality of the food and also the continued support which Chris and his staff give to the society members. The Captain had a domestic emergency and had to leave before the presentation and as the Vice Captain was also away then the Secretary gave an overview of the day’s event and thanked all who turned up to play especially the guests. Through the Secretary members thanked Chris and the staff in the normal manner for another excellent meal and service as they managed to serve forty people in just half an hour. The secretary gave a brief resume of activities to date and made special mention to the Captain’s Day on September 12th and handed out a prospectus for the event to members who were present today. The presentation for the Captains Day’s golf would be made in the evening instead of after the match and this would also include a two course meal and entertainment. The Captain wished members to know that he would be incorporating a charity fund raising exercise for his event and this would be made known prior to the event and also he was providing a commemorative cup to be played for on an Annual basis at the Captain’s Day match. Members were thanked for their attendance and were again reminded that the next match would be at Vistabella on 12th September and early reservation would be necessary as limited places were available.

Hollow Tining of Greens – Why is it necessary? We just entering that period of the year when the courses hollow tine the greens causing a disruption to golf and producing a poor putting surface for a few weeks but just why do they have to do this to us? The surface of a green, colour, density and speed is a combination of the maintenance of the surface but also, about the maintenance of the root-zone. A healthy grass starts from healthy roots. Soil compaction can be a severe problem resulting in restricted root growth, lack of water infiltration into the soil, loss of resilience, weed invasion, disease problems and decline in turf quality. Hollow Tining is used to prevent damage from an excessive soil compaction. It is also very important to provide the needed drainage, for water infiltration and aeration at the root-zone and is done during the warm season when temperatures favour rapid shoot growth and coverage of the turf openings. The use of sand on greens is essential because it helps to digest the organic matter, enhancing the aeration of the root-zone, speed on greens and better recovery from pitch marks. In order to minimize the disruption to golfers, hollow tinning is usually carried out in 2 consecutive journeys so that the 18 greens are aerated in the same week. The surface smoothness restoration process includes top dressing, drag matting and rolling and greens are normally puttable after 3 days with rolling putting surface within 10 days. Some of the local courses such as La Finca, Las Ramblas, La Serena and Villamartin have waived the autumn hollow tining this year however when you next question the parentage of the green keepers you will understand why the work is necessary! We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. TMGS MATCH REPORT - 27 AUGUST 2014 On this day in history, John Glenn orbited the earth and the handicap secretary was seen to be rubbing his hands with future cuts to handicaps after our Medal Play event at Villamartin on this very fine if not hot day. 31 members and guests turned out for a Medal competition and once again, the scores were fairly good with 4 players returning scores of under par. It has to be said that the course wasn’t in too bad condition, but the tee boxes are, to be blunt, void of grass, but it is work in progress. Greens were a little on the slow side but that seems to be the common trait around this time of the year. The best guest and the winner of a TMGS towel was Aaron Currie who at the age of 15, plays off of 10 and he returned with a very tidy nett 73, by far the best score of the day. The Silver Division scores were very reasonable and it needed a nett 76 for 3rd and 4th places and again, a battle between Colin “Mr Whippy” Marsden and Ernie “Belfast Bandit” saw Ernie’s better back nine push Colin into 4th and taking 3rd place for himself. The Runnerup was Per Skarnes with a nett 73 but the very clear winner of this division was Les Wilton with a commendable nett score of 68. Enjoy the new handicap! The Gold crew scores were a little better and a nett 73 saw Steve Higgins claiming 4th spot, Roger The Dodger” Nilsen took 3rd place

with a nice 71, but he was way back from Jesus Lozano’s 68 for 2nd place and an excellent 67 from Aaron Clinton, playing off of 7 (but not next time!) took the top spot in the Gold and overall. Photo: Gold category winners Our next game, Wednesday 3rd September 2014 at La Serena for a Two Ball Better Ball so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966 71 9604. “Club de Golf El Paraiso Rojales” Inaugural competition will be held on 21st September at La Marquesa (Rojales). CARRASCO PENALTY MISS PROVES COSTLY FOR TORRY CD UTIEL - 0 CD TORREVIEJA - 0 Following on from their superb opening day div 3 win over Saguntino, Torry head coach Galiana took all his 23 man squad up to the picturesque setting of Utiel, where nothing but a victory was on his agenda. He elected to field an unchanged starting XI, but chose to make a slight amendment to the bench. In came free from suspension Burguillos, and recently signed Steve Ekedi, who impressed many with his 4 goals in 3 friendly appearances. Torry lined up inside La Celadilla Stadium for the photo shoot, resplendent in their new blue and white shirts, awaiting play to start on a somewhat dodgy artificial pitch. Utiel's captain Fer headed off the line after 8 minutes, this from a Sergi effort that appeared to take a deflection. Cristian struck a fierce angled shot, which keeper Alfredo did well to save, as Torry kept up the early pressure. In a half of few chances, Alexis cleared off the line from the home sides first serious attempt on goal after 37 mins, then on the stroke of half time, Cristian failed to trouble the keeper as his effort whizzed past the upright. With the 2nd half slipping into mediocrity, Galliana brought on Stevie E after 57 mins. Referee Calero had not given Torry's substitute permission to enter the fray, and ultra officiously cautioned him.

UD HORADADA UD HORADADA ............................4 CIUDAD L.A. DE MADRID ...........2 The Reds started off well, scoring the first goal within 1 minute and they were moving the ball about the pitch nicely with a good shape to the team. The first half went so well that half time came quickly with 3 more goals in the bag, Keeper, Gabi Ross, only had one save to make in the half. The second period was different! With three changes made during the interval the shape of the team seemed to have been lost and they lost movement throughout the park. Los Angeles were soon back in it scoring against the second keeper who came on at half time. The visitors began to press Horadada and took control of the game evetually ending up with a second goal.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Horadada Reds Supporters Club will be holding their AGM this coming Thursday 4th September 2014 at Rincon De Pepe 7.30pm. Hope you can all make it. I am sorry for the delay in this but this is the first time I have had chance to sort things out. Please note that we will be looking for a new Secretary for the coming season so if you wish to put your name forward please get back to

CAP CIUDAD DE MURCIA FOOTBALL REVOLUTION

Speaking to Steve post match, he informed me that the club delegado had instructed him go on, but whoever was to blame, this seemingly innocuous error of judgement would later prove to be damaging. The game sprung to life, as home striker Toni flashed a header just wide of the far post, before a training ground movement involving Brani, Steve E and Carrasco, fed Rafa Gomez to blaze a shot over the Utiel crossbar. When Alexis was hauled down inside the penalty area on 79 mins, the ref didn't hesitate to award a spot kick. Unfortunately, Carrasco's kick lacked strength and direction, leaving keeper Alfredo to easily punch away the danger. Even then, Carrasco was given a second bite of the cherry, but his composure abandoned him, as he blazed his shot high into the sky. A 2nd yellow for Steve E for a late lunge, just about summed up the night, but deep into 4 added minutes of stoppage time, Rafa Gomez just failed to convert an Alexis clearance, with the goal at his mercy. There were also bookings for Vicente, Brani, Cesar and Cristian, whilst Utiel also received 4 yellow cards. On Weds 3 Sep, ko 8pm, Torry are back at Vicente Garcia Stadium, when they host Muro in another div 3 encounter. Then next weekend, they make another long journey up to Ribarroja. Check Torry websites for details on dates/times.

Shareholder and International Liaison Rep. for CAP Ciudad de Murcia, Tony Higgins, explains about the football revolution that is happening in the city of Murcia. Ciudad de Murcia aren’t an old club, formed in 1999 by local business men with interests in football. Ciudad quickly climbed up the Spanish football pyramid and twice in the mid-noughties almost gained promotion to La Liga. In those heady days they shared the old Condomina stadium, next to the bullring in the centre of the city, with rivals Real Murcia and things seemed to be going fine for the fledgling club. However, as is often the case for Spanish football clubs and their fans, disaster wasn’t far away. In 2007 it was decided by the owners of the club, who claimed that they weren’t getting supported by the city authorities that they would relocate to Granada and rename the club Granada 74. This was a heavy blow for the small band of diehard fans who had taken the club to their heart and they were determined not to let the club die. Over the years the club has had many reincarnations, at first being called Club Atlético Ciudad de Lorquí and then Club de Fútbol Atlético Ciudad. Eventually after relegation to the Tercera (4th division) in 2010 the club had to be dissolved due to unpaid debts. The fans wouldn’t be beaten though and in 2011, like a phoenix from the ashes, CAP Ciudad de Murcia was born. The prefix of CAP in the name stands for Club de Accionariado Popular which roughly translates club of shareholders .Their management mode, basically one share one vote, is taken from English fan owned clubs like AFC Wimbledon and FC United of Manchester and the Spanish club and its fans has very strong links with the latter. In fact in the early days the founders of

the club travelled to Manchester to see how FCUM was organised. Often fans of the Manchester rebel club can be seen on the terraces with the Ciudad fans, known as The City Boys and you will also see flags of both clubs displayed at FCUM games in England and Ciudad in Spain. Ciudad, like FCUM, have strong ethos against the excesses of the modern game, which has seen it lose it working class roots and which has priced some fans out. This coming season, which starts on 7th September, Ciudad will play in the Prefirente Regional Division (5th Division) but with a strong squad they expect promotion. Crowds can vary between 400 and 1000 and the atmosphere created by the clubs excellent supporters is something to behold. There is a real feeling of togetherness too that resonates throughout the club and new fans are always welcomed. Home games this season will be played at the Estadio Jose Barnes, which is in the centre of Murcia and games are usually played on a Sunday afternoon. The stadium has ample parking and is served by the tram stop Juan Carlos I. Individual games cost €3 but season tickets can be bought for €20, the first home game is Sunday September 14th.
