EXPLOSIVE DETECTION EXERCISE OFF THE ORIHUELA COSTA

Twenty ships from eight different countries are currently taking part in the training exercise 'Spanish Minex' off the coast between Alicante and Cartagena which will continue until 22 September. The exercise has been organized by the Spanish navy to improve coordination in the detection and dismantling of mines and bombs in the sea. Details of the deployment were provided last week at a press conference held by the Commander of the Medidas Contraminas de la Armada, Jaime Golmayo, who will be

directing the exercise, together with the participation of NATO. He explained that the methods for countermine warfare are very sophisticated, so regular collaboration between different navy’s is essential. “These exercises will allow us all to practice common tactics in order to ensure freedom of navigation of maritime traffic in general and freedom of action of the naval forces in particular.” There are lots of naval mines that are still a threat to marine traffic in many parts of the world.
