EXPLOSIVE DETECTION EXERCISE OFF THE ORIHUELA COSTA

Tel: 96 673 0057

Twenty ships from eight different countries are currently taking part in the training exercise 'Spanish Minex' off the coast between Alicante and Cartagena which will continue until 22 September. The exercise has been organized by the Spanish navy to improve coordination in the detection and dismantling of mines and bombs in the sea. Details of the deployment were provided last week at a press conference held by the Commander of the Medidas Contraminas de la Armada, Jaime Golmayo, who will be

directing the exercise, together with the participation of NATO. He explained that the methods for countermine warfare are very sophisticated, so regular collaboration between different navy’s is essential. “These exercises will allow us all to practice common tactics in order to ensure freedom of navigation of maritime traffic in general and freedom of action of the naval forces in particular.” There are lots of naval mines that are still a threat to marine traffic in many parts of the world. Many of the mines are obsolete weapons which were invented over 100 years ago, but precisely because of this they are very cheap and easy Continued on Page 2

In the first phase of the operation, which is currently underway, and is taking place on the coast between Cabo de Palos and Torrevieja, around 65 simulated mines have been launched. Captain Golmayo emphasized that they are all completely safe and harmless to the environment and marine life. From 11 to 13 September the first training phase and the integration of the different navy’s took place, with the tactical

phase taking place between 14 to 19. During this phase of the exercise the vessels will search for, locate, classify, identify and simulate the neutralization of the mines. One of the exercises that will be conducted will be the neutralization of drifting mines, which he said is far more complex than mines that are attached to fixed points. All operations are carried out in a fictional scenario in which a crisis occurs in country ruled by a dictatorship. On 21 and 22 September all the artifacts used in the area will be collected by the force which will also clean the seabed of the are used in the exercise. In total there will be over 500 military taking part from Spain, Germany, France, Turkey, Greece, Belgium, Italy and the UK. Spain is providing five minesweepers, a submarine, three patrol boats, an auxiliary vessel, a helicopter and one airplane.

LOCAL SCHOOLS SUSPEND CLASSES

ust a week after reopening its doors following the summer holiday the IES Virgen del Remedio de Alicante sent its students home last Tuesday morning after many of them complained of sickness as the heat in the classrooms reached 30 degrees C. The move was in direct contravention to the guidelines issued by the department of Education. In a statement issued to the parents of all students the headmaster said that the school was unable to perform satisfactorily with temperatures as high "and with the forecast of the upcoming weather conditions showing little change he had informed the competent education authorities, that the school will be closed until Monday 15th September." A regional administrator had attended the school on the previous day at the request of the headmaster. He said that "all classes" without exception, had exceeded the temperature of 30 degrees from as early as 8.30 am. The law says that the maximum limit for students whilst undertaking their school activities should be 27 degrees so the headmaster said that he had no option other than to suspend the vocational training and high school classes.

J

The teachers told parents that the students complained that they couldn’t sit indoors and as such they were allowed to move to the playground where they spent their time drinking water. They said that they would much prefer that classes were canceled. Before the move to close the school many parents had already said that they were keeping their children at home. Indeed on the previous day at the IES de San Blas, the management decided that teachers could not continue teaching in temperatures that exceeded 27 degrees and they sent their students outdoors in search of shade. This situation led to students, tired of the heat, notifying the families many of who arrived at the center to take them away. Another local school which carried out similar action was the Clara Campoamor de Elche where teachers had urged the Department of Education to provide an urgent solution to the problem and which, on Friday had received a visit from an Inspector with the Valencian Institute for Health and safety at Work (INVASSAT) who measured the temperatures in the classes . Many other institutes said that they applauded the decision of the IES Virgen del Remedio and the Clara Campoamor de Elche.

ALICANTE CRUISE NUMBERS DOUBLE ruise tourism continues to improve in Alicante, with only last week the port hosting two vessels on the same day, catering for a total of 2,300 passengers who visited the city for between four and seven hours. The director of operations of the of the cruise terminal in the Port of Alicante, Fracesco Balbi, announced recent figures last week showing the improved performance that has been achieved since ‘Costablanca Portuaria’ took over the concession. In 2013, the port hosted 41,800 passengers who arrived on 29 vessels. This year, the number has risen to 32 cruise liners and 55,000 passengers, showing an increase of 24% in the number of passengers arriving in the city in a period of just one year. But the largest increase is expected to take place next year when the authority has scheduled 49 cruise vessels bring in over 90,000 tourists. This is double the number of cruise arrivals in the city within just two years. Balbi says that these figures are the result of the efforts that have been made in the last 12 months by the Port Authority, the City of Alicante and ‘Costablanca Portuaria’ which have made a large number of improvements to the cruise capability of the city. The arrival hall, which was little more than a shell, has been refurbished and now includes a wifi network, air conditioning, services for the disabled, a tourist information office and free bus shuttles that connect the terminal to the city center. And next year even more improvements are planned including a chill out area and a café. The improved facility and increased passenger numbers is also expected to have a major ‘spill over effect’ on the tourist economy in the local area, a major benefit that will impact greatly on the city from an economic point of view. There will be more cruise passengers staying longer

C

and spending more money. Many of the passengers will embark and disembark at Alicante so this will benefit the transport systems, such as the airport, with flights arriving and departing from Alicante to and from the cities of origin of the cruisers. Many more will arrive and depart on the AVE rail network system.

SECURITY LOCKERS INSTALLED ON LA PLAYA DE GLEA We have all experienced the problem, a lazy day on the beach but nowhere to store our valuables. How many of us have suffered over the years, if not from theft, but from the worry of having to keep an eye on our wallets, keys or simple possessions. Well now, certainly at La Glea beach, that concern is no more because, after a successful trial on La Zenia, Chiringuitos del Sol have installed brand new security lockers in which to deposit your belongings at Campoamor. The system has been installed by the operators, Chiringuitos del Sol, along with the support of the Orihuela council, one of the first in the world to ensure the safety and security of visiting tourists. The lockers can be rented all day or for just five euro’s and when you compare the charge to the cost and inconvenience of losing your valuables it’s a small price to pay. One tourist told the Leader that on a beach as popular and as crowded as Campoamor a simple oversight could result in loss or theft so the 5 euro charge is well worth the peace of mind that the security locker provides.

BELT UP Figures released by the DGT last week say that 26% of those killed in traffic accidents involving passenger cars during the summer and 30% of the occupants of vans, were not using seat belts at the time of the accident, despite the issue of 127,900 fines to motorists during 2013. As such a spokesman said they will soon announce the details of a new campaign for monitoring the use of safety belts and child restraint systems.

ART WORKSHOP CANCELLED The Municipal Institute of Culture at Joaquín Chapaprieta have announced that the fifth edition of the Ars Creatio Gala of Culture, which was scheduled on Friday September 19 at the Municipal Theatre, has been suspended for technical reasons. The cultural association will continue, however, with their usual activities, and preparation of their quarterly magazine.

The lockers are provided in customizable modules, five meters wide and a height of just over eight feet, with each module consisting of 108 boxes. They are solar powered and they also offer free wifi to their users when situated within a 400 metre radius. Renting a locker for eleven hours costs just five euro, so for a small fee visitors can rest easy Chiringuitos del Sol has eleven beach bar establishments on Orihuela Costa’s frontline beaches where they work extremely hard to ensure the enjoyment and tranquility of tourists, efforts that have rightly earned the company the "Q" mark for quality. They have also been awarded ISO 9000 and 14000 certifications.

LOCAL POLICE MAKING ORIHUELA SAFER

The Policia Local celebrated the feast of their Patron Saint last week with a Mass at the Orihuela Cathedral. They also used the opportunity to honour many of their officers who have provided loyal and distinguished service to the city and the force over many years. The local police were joined in their celebrations by representatives from the National Police and the Guardia Civil with which they regularly cooperate in pursuance of their security efforts. The Commander of the Orihuela force, Jose Maria Pomarez, opened the ceremony by congratulating the performance of his officers even during these times of economic stringency in which they are forced to carry out many of their duties with a minimum of resources. He also acknowledged the efforts of councilors and municipal staff in ensuring that the necessary funding is available, even though not as much as would be wanted, “which is essential for us to do our job with a minimum of safety and security." The Chief of police staff stressed his delight at the addition of eighteen new officers who will be used to strengthen the service on the Orihuela Costa as

part of a new Immediate Intervention Unit, which will act both in the town and in the surrounding districts, while other additional officers will support the various councils to ensure compliance with local ordinances. The chief of the local police also thanked National and Guardia colleagues for their cooperation received each day "despite the limited human resources that they also are forced to endure." In the absence of Monserrate Guillen, who continues to recover from a heart attack, the stand in mayor, Antonio Zapata, said that the new recruits will be devoted to improve services throughout the entire municipality. He praised the Policia Locale for the work that they do every day, and said that they must continue in their efforts to open paths to equality, with special attention to evils such as violence against women as well as crimes involving children and the elderly who are often the most vulnerable. Together with the Councillor for Security, Manuel Gallud, the deputy Mayor and the Chief of police then presented diplomas and awards to those many officers who have served the city and the force with distinction.

Three patera boats arrived in Torrevieja on Thursday morning containing the latest wave of 20 illegal immigrants, five of which are said to be minors (this will be subject to the relevant medical tests for verification) The chief operating officer of the Red Cross, Andrés Chessa, has revealed that the majority of people arrived in wet clothing and displayed signs of exhaustion, as a result of which one of the arrivals was rushed straight to hospital. Sources from the Civil Guard said that one of the three boats was sighted at about 2:35am by the Immigration services and appeared stranded on the beach area offshore from Playa Flamenca, Punta Prima, close to Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja. Six occupants were picked up and arrested. Later, at around 3:20 am, the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard intercepted two further boats with fourteen people on board about miles of the coast of Torrevieja, directly out from Cabo Roig. All of the immigrants were said to be young men, of North African origin. According to sources from the Civil Guard, fourteen of them have claimed to be Algerian. Meanwhile, sources have said that some of the immigrants may also have come from Tunisia and Morocco. Health organisation volunteers have provided care for the refugees in addition to providing warm clothes, food, drink and toiletries. COSTAS TO RESOLVE CALA CAPITAN LANDSLIDES Councillor for the Coast and Beaches, Martina Scheurer, said last week that the municipality now has permission from the Coastal Authority to make repairs along the coastal footpaths where they have suffered mud and landslides particularly adjacent to the beach at Cala Capitan, close to Cabo Roig, where the path has been closed for over a year. As the coastal paths fall under the jurisdiction of the Costas and not the Orihuela Council they have had to wait for the authority and the funding before they can set out on any works. But now, with a budget of 50,000 euros, Scheurer has said that she is able to authorise the start of repairs to the footpath at Cala Capitan that has long been a major inconvenience to residents and tourist who use the coastal path. She says that she now hopes that the repairs will be completed in time for the influx of visitors to the

area in the next spring-summer campaign. Despite repairs that are also needed elsewhere along the 10km of municipal coastline, this is the only investment that is currently available. But the good news is that the council is expecting a group of experts from northern Spain to make a visit so that a detailed repair plan and budget can be introduced. Another area where urgent action is required is La Caleta, where there are more landslides. The councilor said that in this case many of the owners of the houses on the cliff tops will be required to install rainwater collection systems, so that the water doesn’t fall directly onto the rocks, as their contribution toward the costs of repairs Two other stretches of coastline where work is needed are Aguamarina and Barranco Rubio where a hundred feet crack appeared along a stretch between Barranco Rubio and Mil Palmeras during the summer.

GOING IT ALONE A vote on the Catalan region's independence from Spain will be "practically impossible" to stop, even if Madrid is against a referendum, the regional president told AFP on Wednesday. A vote, which the Spanish government says would be illegal, has been called for November 9. The growing controversy in Spain comes as Scotland prepares for its own vote on separating from the UK.

ILLEGAL MOORINGS San Javier council has threatened the owners of an increasing number of illegally parked boats along the Mar Menor coastline with stiff fines of between 3,000 and 180,000 euros. Security forces in several European countries, including the National Police have dismantled a network carrying out burglaries across the continent, many of them in Alicante and Valencia, in an operation that has seen the arrest of 95 people, 49 of them in Spain. Robberies took place in France , Sweden, Greece, Germany, Portugal, Romania and Austria.

The cost of the work will be 60,000 euros and it will provide yet another step in the revival of this important part of the town’s heritage. However as a preliminary step, the town’s Brigadas de Emergencia (Emergency Brigade) has already begun the cleanup and clearing campaign in and around the site. The intention of the government guardamarenco team is to make a roadmap for future actions that will culminate in the launch of the new Information Centre for La Rabita and Fonteta. "Guardamar Castle is a symbol that requires continuous attention and maintenance, and for that reason we have the cooperation of many different groups and associations," said the Councillor for Heritage, Jesus Huertas. “The installation of the perimeter lights will act as a deterrent to vandals and make it so much easier for these groups such as the Emergency Brigade to monitor the castle’s security.”

The General University Hospital of Alicante has carried out a total of 11,950 operations in the first six months of this year, 1,014 more than the same period of 2013, representing an increase of 9.27% ??in the surgery process. Of these, 8,957 (74.95%) were performed under general and 2,993 (25.05%), with local anesthesia, according to a statement from the Generalitat.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Mutiny on the Ferry Well, we all know what it is like. You’ve had a busy day being a very important captain of a not too important ship. You’ve had an early start and only eaten a dry cheese and pickle sandwich for lunch. You are hot and tired, and you can feel a headache coming on. What’s more, you just can’t wait to get home to the dog, or the wife… How about skipping part of the journey and hopping along to another destination port instead? That would be a very sensible idea, which would make life so much easier. You would arrive home much earlier and maybe the passengers, who are so tanked up with cheap booze anyway, won’t even notice. After all, this is the Canary Islands, and it would be hard to be more chilled out. Maybe, but possibly think again. The island ferry was on one of its regular sailings from the island of Fuerteventura to Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria. The service is never particularly exciting; it is just one of the many standard ferry journeys to facilitate the connections between the seven Canary Islands. The ferry had already been delayed for some time, and the passengers were not pleased at its late departure from Fuerteventura and its even later arrival in Gran Canaria. The last straw came when an announcement over the ferry’s public address system indicated that

the ferry would dock at the port of Agaete instead, and not Las Palmas xx as timetabled, making it a much longer journey, which would mean further delays and inconvenience for the passengers on board. Do passengers matter that much anyway? The captain made a decision; he would not stop at the planned destination, but travel on to Agaete. Wouldn’t the company be pleased with him? The passengers were not happy when they heard the news. Indeed, it quickly became clear that they were having none of it and, after a brief meeting, angrily decided that they would stage a protest and insist that the ship’s captain think again and stick to the original destination. Seeing the numbers of angry passengers on board, the captain, wisely, reconsidered his earlier decision and decided to head for the port of Las Palmas as originally scheduled. A wise man indeed. Apparently, the planned switch to Agaete had nothing to do with poor weather conditions or safety issues, but was merely to address the issue that one of the company’s other ferries was not in service, and it suited the interests and economics of the company to use the Fuerteventura ferry to fulfil its scheduled service to Tenerife. The passengers won the day and disembarked in Las Palmas as originally planned. Victory for the travellers and common sense prevailed. So there we have it. The captain, as well as the shipping company learned a valuable lesson, and, for once, passengers reigned supreme. If you just happen to be a captain of a ship, a bus driver or a pilot,

never be tempted to switch to another route just because you happen to have changed your mind or you need to be at a party. It is best to stick to the original route, otherwise you may have a mutiny on board. TOASTMASTERS CLUB n Saturday 6th September, Las Palmeras Club had its first meeting of the season, after the summer break. The elected team of club officers started a new year with renewed strength and willingness to push and promote the Club forward after an already successful last year. We have been recognised by the headquarters at Toastmasters International, in the USA with a ribbon of Distinction. We followed a standard structure for the meeting. The first part was the Table Topics, led by Carolyn Harris, who proposed different topics to the impromptu speakers. The Poem of the Day (The Reckoning, by Robert W. Service) was read by Jim Finnegan. The prepared speeches were given by Santiago Callaba (CC3), Georgia Varjas (AC) and David McLachlan (AC). All the activities were thoroughly evaluated by different members of the club, thus making an enjoyable learning experience. A very big THANK YOU goes to our guests in this meeting: Geraldine, Fernando, Mariano, Ronen, Javier and Israel, who were so brave to participate in the Table Topics session. The next meeting on 20 September will be a special one, since it will host our annual Humorous Speech Contest. This is the once-a-year opportunity to see the best speakers of the club competing with humorous speeches for a position to represent the club in the Area-level contest which happens two weeks later. An event not to be missed. For those Guests which are not familiar with the Toastmasters International experience, it should be highlighted that the access to the meetings is for free. The organization is non-profit, and depends only on the personal implication and proactivity of

O

the members. There is a very VERY small fee which is needed to pay for the meeting place, paperwork, etc. For further information check out our web site www.laspalmeras.toastmastersclubs.org or contact David McLachlan on 966700056. Meetings take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays at the Restaurant Asturias, Punta Prima from 1015 to 1230 hrs.

HOUSING PRICES RECOVER 2.3% Once again the data released last week by the National Statistics Institute (INE), shows that property prices continue to show signs of recovery in the Valencia Province which falls only behind Madrid in terms of overall price increase. In the second quarter of the year housing prices rose 2.3% over the same period last year. In the country as a whole, however, during the second quarter, house prices rose by 0.8% compared to the same period last year, representing the first positive annual performance in six years, since the first quarter of 2008. By Autonomous Community, prices rose with Madrid, 2.7%, and Valencia, 2.3%, leading the way. Increases were also recorded in Andalucía, Baleares, Cantabria, Catalonia, Galicia, Murcia and the autonomous city of Melilla. However prices continue to decline in nine other

communities and Ceuta. The largest decreases were in Navarra, with a fall of 6.1% and in Extremadura, where there was a decrease of 3.5%.

CLARO CHALLENGE TO SUPPORT CARITAS Members of Claro took part in an ‘ice bucket challenge’ last weekend in support of the Orihuela Costa branch of Caritas which provides food for needy families in the area. The picture shows Cllr Bob Houliston (right) just before he felt the benefit of the cold water. The challenge has enabled Claro to collect in excess of 500 kg of food from traders, businessmen and members of local associations which will be distributed by the charity throughout the Orihuela Costa.

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE COMES TO MOORES SPURS The global sensation that is the Ice Bucket Challenge came to Moores Bar in Cabo Roig last week with no fewer than eight members of Spurs Supporters Spain getting dunked with freezing cold water and in the process raising money for their chosen charity. Having completed her challenge (see picture) Shona Farnes donned her collecting hat and went round with a bucket - empty this time - and collected 120 euros for the Stacey Mowle Appeal. Stacey is an 8 year old Spurs fan who - four years ago - was diagnosed with a very severe and aggressive form of cancer - Neuroblastoma. There is no cure at the moment and the only viable treatment is in the USA but, at a cost of over half a million pounds sterling, this is currently impossible which is why the guys and girls at Moores Bar are putting all their efforts behind the appeal. More events are planned - one of their members is considering entering the "Stay Sober for October" appeal but doesn´t think the local economy would survive a month of him not drinking - while in November a big Legends Evening is being staged at both Moores Bar and next door at Marinasol Restaurant. Former Spurs stars Graham Roberts and Stephen Sedgley will be in attendance on Saturday 15th November for a gala dinner, with raffle and auction plus fun and laughter and it is hoped that a lot more money will be raised for such a good cause. More details about the charity, the event and the supporters club can be found on their website - www.spurssupportersspain.com. Tickets are available from Moores Bar and Canal Print Rioja.

CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS This week- round two of our Autumn series, was fished on the Eden canal part of the river Segura in Guardamar. The bamboo has become quite intimidating reaching up to some 15 feet over you in many places, so some work was needed on quite a few of the swims as they had become over grown in places. The results were as follows: First was Steve Collins with a weight of 4.02kg, second was Jackie Breslin with 3.56kg, third was Steve Fell with 2.60kg and in fourth place Geoff Tempest with 2.58kg. All caught with maggot on the feeder. Next weeks match will be held on the 18th of September on the River Segura in Benijofar- Pegs at 8.00am fishing 9.00 to 2.00pm. The following week the Club will be fishing the Pantana de Benniares. The next meeting will be held at the Bar on Sunday the 21st of September with the Committee at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00am. The next of our Clubs Quiz nights will be held at the Bar on Tuesday the 23rd of September starting at 7.30pm., please note this is instead of the Quiz which is normally held on the last Tuesday of the month. The cost is 1 Euro per person and teams of up to 6 can take part in this fun Quiz with up to 4 team prizes up for grabs. The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores, which is to be found just off the N332 between Guardamar and La Mata. The Clubs web site is to be found at www.carprus.net or you can Phone 966 717 923.

ESTRELLA DAMM CRIBBAGE Ron Sheldon Welcome back to the start of our new crib season and with 3 off 7-2 results it’s quite a start. Notwithstanding those scores there were 6 pairs that achieved the maximum of 3 wins and another 6 pairs who didn’t win a game (no names to admonish). With it being the first week for the league one cannot read too much into the relative positions with the top teams only having 2 more points than the bottom teams, although ominously last season’s winners and runners up are at the top. SAILORS COLLECT THEIR TROPHIES The trophies for the winning boats in the Sailing Association Mar Menor’s Spring 2014 Handicap Series were presented during the clubs September meeting. The scoring is the ‘low points’ system where, in each race the winner is awarded 0.75 of a point, second 2 points, third 3 points etc. There were 16 races in the series with the best 12 results for each boat counting for the series places. First the Hartley 12.2 with 30.75 points including seven wins in the series Second the Sailfish 18, Mistral with 42.72 points including one win and three seconds Third the Laser 2000, Shoestring Tres with 44.75 points also including one win and three seconds The crews vary throughout the series and the photograph shows from left to right Vernon O’Byrne, Shoestring Tres, Julian Perring, Mistral and Tug Wilson, Hartley 12.2, who collected the trophies on behalf of everybody who contributed to each boats score.

SAAM - FIRST RACE DAY OF THE AUTUMN SERIES Wednesday 7th September offered blue sky and sea but unfortunately no wind when the competitors arrived for the first race day of the Sailing Association Mar Menor’s Autumn 2014 Series. But by 11.30am a light breeze had materialised and the race started with 9 boats. The five dinghies were away first in a 7 knot breeze but, 5 minutes later when the 4 bigger boats started; it had dropped to 4 knots which gave the dinghies a distinct advantage. All finished their four laps in less than 2 hours against the over 2 hours for all the bigger boats. As these are handicap races the result on corrected time was 1st the Faversham 14 of David / Louise Belcher, a great win for a relatively inexperienced couple. 2nd the Sailfish 18 of Bob Miles / Carol Sibson and 3rd the Laser 2000 of Brian Murray / Pete Caldwell. The wind had increased to 10-12 knots when the second race started at 3pm for

the 5 dinghies and 3 larger boats, enabling them all to complete four laps in less than 75 minutes. The two Sailfish 18’s crossed the line just 2 seconds apart which had the makings of an exciting tussle, within the race, between these identical boats. Unfortunately Sirocco, sailed by Rob Hudson suffered a broken rudder after about 10 minutes and was forced to retire. The results on corrected time were 1st the Laser 2000 of Tug Wilson / Vernon O’Byrne; 2nd the Gamba of John Down / Laurence Carter and 3rd the Laser 2000 of Brian Murray / Pat Fleck. The next race day is September 21st and the monthly SAMM meeting is on October 8th both at the Spanish sports academy CTD Infanta Christina on the beach front at Los Najeros, near Los Alcazares. New competitors and members welcome.

EURONICS DART LEAGUE AGM INFORMATION

The popular Thursday night darts league kicks off in just over two weeks time (October 2nd) a week later than anticipated at the recent AGM. It’s a new look Euronics league this term with several popular changes unanimously passed at the meeting. The league will run until May 7th 2015 throughout the winter, bar a two week Christmas break. The most significant change is the split into two divisions allowing a promotion and relegation tussle at the end of the season. The playing format has also been “tweaked” with the unpopular 6 a side team game discarded in favour of an additional triple, keeping 12 legs available and the possibility of a drawn match. With 25 draws last season, shared spoils between teams playing well is deemed the fairest solution to a close game. Division 1 will play best of 3, 501 in their respective

singles whilst Division 2 retain the one leg, 501 format. Playing the KO Cup Final on Finals Night has previously necessitated a very early start due to the format, but still resulting in a late finish. The situation has been addressed by moving the Cup Final to an alternative night but adding a new triples competition to be contested on Finals Night. The white goods and domestic products supplier Euronics of Blue Lagoon agreed to continue their sponsorship of the League for a third term, managing director Debbie Wright commented “we are delighted once again to support this popular league”. The Committee of Paul Durrant, Derek Kingsbury and Linda Cross agreed to continue their responsibilities and were once again elected unanimously. In fact all voting to include numerous changes were uncontested throughout the AGM. Several venue changes were announced thus. Two

teams formerly playing from Hattons will now play their fixtures at the Junction (El Galan). Que Pasa Eagles are now joined by Brett Badlove´s Que Pasa Kestrels and with one team in each division, what odds on the canny licensee winning both divisions. Two additional teams were voted in to compete the new season, the Ale House (lower level Villamartin Plaza) and Evolution (La Fuente). The Chairman announced the Leader Newspaper will be continuing last year´s inaugural merit table awards for ladies, gents and team, which proved popular last year. Will Simone de Lacy, Pat Abrams and the Porter House retain their hard won awards. Anyone wishing to play in the Thursday league on a casual or regular basis should contact Paul Durrant on 966 181 947. Several teams are looking for additional players of varying ability.

‘Mike Probert talks Golf (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Post Card from Menorca’ Well it is now officially the longest drought in Spain since 1857 and by the time you read this article I will have returned from a well earned rest on the beautiful island of Menorca and I can heartily recommend it for a peaceful and tranquil holiday. Obviously despite being on ‘holiday’ golf is never far from my thoughts and while there I took the opportunity to visit the ONLY golf course on the island called Son Parc. This golf course originally opened to the public in 1977 as a 9 hole course which was later extended to an 18 hole layout by Dave Thomas who is also responsible for many other courses such as San Roque, Altorreal and the Belfry in the UK. The course measures 5,169 metres (5,686 yards) from the competition tees and has a par of 69 comprising 6 par 3’s, 9 par 4’s and 3 par 5’s and is a relatively flat, narrow and tree lined course with strategically placed dog legs, bunkers and water hazards and the golfer must carefully plan their way around the course to obtain the best result and the gung-ho approach will not work on this course. The course is designed to be ecologically ‘green’ with a wide variety of carefully selected flora and forna and a reprocessing plant to treat and re-use waste water from the urbanisation on which the course is located. The facilities include a reasonably well appointed golf shop with an 18 bay driving range (with 14 covered bays) and a good restaurant with large terrace overlooking the courses and driving range. This course is will worth a game if you intend to visit the island but remember that the resorts and accommodation in the area largely close during the winter and spring months. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN One or two familiar faces figured in this week´s prize giving at the Hub Villamartin, following a very enjoyable round at the excellent La Finca Golf Resort. Cliff Smith found himself on the guest podium for the third time this summer, unfortunately his 31 stableford points is now reflecting his continued handicap reduction. He had to play however second fiddle to another guest Mark Parry who came in with a creditable 34 points off a 9 handicap. The first three places in the Members Grand Prix had all previously scaled the podium heights, the best of the trio being Rob Wheeler taking consecutive top spots, this time with 36 points and a nearest the pin on the 198yd 6th, just to rub it in. Despite being out of the top three the infamous John Eyre still managed a duo of prizes by capturing a nearest the pin in two on the 378yd 8th and another on the 180yd 13th. The old boy also figures in the Grand Prix with only a handful of points separating the top 6 players. Dave Lethaby currently leads the table, with 2013 champion Paul Durrant sitting in third place. Simon Lee splits the two, whilst name sake and Hub licensee Mr. Williams

finds himself at the dizzy height of 5th place and a real chance of a top three slot. With the best 8 scores of 15 events counting and just two more to play don’t bet against Lethaby coming out on top, with a real scramble determining the minor placings. Results N.T.P´s: Hole 6 Rob Wheeler, Hole 8 (in 2) John Eyre, Hole 13 John Eyre, Hole 16 Cliff Smith PJ Rentacars Best Guest: 1st Mark Parry 36 pts, 2nd Cliff Smith (on c/b) 31 pts Grand Prix: 1st Rob Wheeler 36 pts, 2nd Peter Hogg 31 pts, 3rd Simon Lee 30 pts The Hubbers next event is on September 28th at La Serena, guests are welcome to register at the Hub (Villamartin) for this or the remaining two events. The Hub will also be running a winter league from December to February inclusive, interested players should register at the Hub. Picture shows L/R Simon Lee, Cliff Smith, Mark Parry, John Eyre

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY

LIME BAR GOLF SOCIETY

By Mike Chapman We started the week with a Dusty Bin (3-2-1) with the hot and humid weather continuing to make playing conditions difficult. The winners with a very good score of 90 pts was the team of Mick Brentnall, Dave Pulling, Rod Doel and Angie Green. As has been the case in recent weeks poor Geoff Biggerstaff was once again in the unlucky second placed team along with Ron Percival, Peter Dunn and 'Albert' with 87 pts. On Wednesday we played our usual weekly stableford competition which turned out to be a very close affair in Cat 1 with the top two having to be separated on a countback both scoring a superb 39 pts. The full days results were as follows: Cat 1 1st. Lindsay Forbes 39 pts (c/b) 2nd. Ron Phipps 39 pts 3rd. Mick Brentnall 36 pts Cat 2 1st. Roger Tunstall 34 pts 2nd. Rod Doel 33 pts 3rd. Brian Dent 32 pts Guest Prize: Mark A 2's Club: Ron Phipps, Doug Wright and Bryan Neal On Friday we played a 4 ball Texas Scramble which was won with an unbelievable score of 56.6 which as far as I am aware is a Club record. This amazing score was achieved by the team of Lindsay Forbes, Nick Campbell, Mark (Guest) and Angie Green.

LOS ALTOS, ORIHUELA COSTA The golf society’s venue for the 10th September 2014 was held at the Alicante Golf Club. THE ORANGE TREE GOLF SOCIETY AT MAR MENOR Once again this new golf society met for breakfast and instructions at The Orange Tree bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig before setting of for the golf society. What a pleasure it is to be returning to this wonderful course, (having to abandon the game the last time we were due to play here due to the only rain and thunderstorms that the Costa Blanca has seen this year). What a fantastic job that has been done, all though the greens were slow due to excess grass. This course is now again one of the best and must thank all the staff for the excellent service and friendly welcome. Once gathered in the bar the Captain, Nigel Cawthra, decided on a 3 man Texas Scramble competition (much to Dave Eadington's delight). We all then set off on a wonderful sunny (and extremely hot) day. Great pleasure was had by all playing with friends. We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree bar and restaurant in Cabo Roig, for the presentation and a few drinks along with the excellent snacks. Thanks must go to Chris, Viv, Nigel, Hannah, Lilly, Brian, Gary, Jody, Rhona, Ann Marie and Katie for the wonderful service. The winners (has shown in the picture minus Dave Eadington) were Chris Blown, Dave Eadington and Simon Sharples with a nett score of 60.47, 2nd were Nigel Cawthra, Fred Noakes and Terry (Trevor) Seymour with 63.45 and 3rd were Stuart Robertson, Martin Lowe and Bill Seeley with 64.97. NTP were won by Simon Sharples and Chris Blown The next society event is on Tuesday 16th

September, all golfers of any standard are welcome to join the regular members and can either place they name upon the start sheet within the restaurant. Or you can either phone the restaurant on 965323235, or email us on orangetree@hotmail.es. All the fixtures and results for the society can be viewed on the website www.orangetree-caboroig.com

LO CRISPIN SOCIETY AT LORCA

This is the third time the Society has enjoyed an away day at Lorca Golf Resort and Aguilas, this time however, most people took advantage of staying in Aguilas by adding an extra day to enjoy that beautiful part of Murcia. The hotel was the Puerto Juan Montiel over looking the marina and the beach and within easy reach of the old town, a nice chill out part of the coast. On the 3rd whilst members and guests were playing golf Lorca, the ladies enjoyed a spa treatment and the pool. The golf format was a 4 person Texas scramble with the handicaps carefully worked out by the Captain so we were all within point 5 of a shot difference. For anyone who has not played at Lorca, it is a testing course with wide ravines to drive over and plenty of natural vegetation close to the fairways ready to capture that errant ball, plenty of water and an island green, so four tries at getting over some of these hazards was very useful. We were well looked after by Ignacio, Director of

Golf and his staff on the day and with Ignacio making arrangements with the hotel very easy for us, by liaising with them directly. The only hiccup was Harry and Neil who, despite reminders, forgot their passports, but Ignacio sorted out this problem as well. The best teams were: 1st Ian Davidison, Margaret Obrien, Brian Smith and Malcolm Morrison 56.6 2nd Brian Coultate, Steve Harrington, Meirion Roberts and Alan Owen 59.5 3rd Ray Moles, Janet Candlin, Alan Crain and Barny Barningham 60.3 NTPs: Padraig Obrien hole 4, Brian Smith hole 6, Ray Moles hole 8, Malcolm Morrison hole 10 and John Dunnion hole 12. After a cool swim and a buffet dinner we all gathered on the terraza overlooking the sea and enjoyed a well earned get together. Thanks must go to Brian Coultate for organising the event, everything went very smoothly, roll on next year.

BUSTERS GOLF SOCIETY

HAPPY DAYS @ SERENA.

We all met up at the Mini Golf bar in Quesada for coffees prior to setting off for Alicante Golf course to play our monthly stableford , the September sun was surely hotter than previous years and it started to take its toll on many of our twenty six players on the second nine holes , we only had three players who bettered sixteen points on the back nine . I have to say that Alicante golf course was in superb condition and the facilities there first class with some of the tees having cold drinking water fountains , which were needed as plenty of fluid was necessary on this hot and humid day , although the greens were a little slow they were all consistent and maybe they had been left just a smidgen longer so as to protect them against the ferocious summer sun , the fairways were all good and there was sand in the bunkers , something that seems to be overlooked on many of the other courses we have been playing this year . We all got to the course an hour early to have a rabbit and take advantage of Alicante’s offer of coffee and tostadas that are included in their society deals . I’ll move on to our results , on this outing all the par threes were hit in regulation by one or more of our members , and taking into consideration the length of some of them this was no mean feat , N T P on the third hole was John Rush , the sixth was won by Bill Peters with Colin Edwards taking holes eight and fifteen Steve Edwards won the twelfth and last but by no means least hole seventeen was won by Phil Pettican , each won a sleeve of three Srixon golf balls , in third place with a score of thirty two points was Dave Ryan , in second place was Bill Peters with thirty three points and our winner also with thirty three points but winning by having a better back nine was Martin Collins , all received cash prizes , our soccer card was won by Kay Ryan who chose Liverpool . We all returned to the Mini Golf bar not far from the Quesada Arches for our presentation , snacks and a welcome couple of beers .

By Robin Adams A good turnout to play our pairs Texas scramble, the weather was perfect, the course looked good although the greens were very slow we had some very good scores ( and some rubbish scores as well) in first place were Andy Shuttle ( Capt) & Ken Farrow. 2nd. Steve Dixon & Kevin Barrett, in 3rd place, Dave Eadington & Bill Seely, The nearest Pins won by, hole 9, Bill Seely, (15) Linda White, (17) Alan Rollings. Well played all of you. After the game we all (nearly) returned to Marinasol Restaurant (Cabo Roig) where we treated to sandwiches & some very tasty roasties, thanks to Maz, Steve, & new Super Chef (Ramon), it made a nice end to the day. On a personal note after nearly a year away it was fantastic to see lot of my friends & be made so welcome, unfortunately it will be my very last game (due to injury). Please support your Society, they will need at least 3-4 new Committee members, Please show your support and volunteer to help, ( I did it for 9 years & mostly enjoyed it very much). Happy Golfing Friends

Clarkes Bar Golf Society This week we returned to Vistabella for our weekly stableford competition on a hot day but with a light breeze blowing to take the edge off the temperature. The course was in its usual good condition and the greens had recovered well from their recent hollow tining although they were soft and spiked up quite badly later on. This did not detract from an excellent days golf and although nobody beat par no less than 15 of our 24 starters scored 30 points or more. Results were: Nearest the pin on hole 4 was Dave Thomson, hole 8 was Frank McCann. Nearest the par 4 16th in 2 was Graham Haywood. Longest drive on the 18th was Tommy Clarke. Winner with 35 points on count back better back 9 was Patricia Creegan just edging out Charlie Rodgers and Roy Welburn. Next week we at La Serena meet at the bar at 8am

CELTS CLUB DE GOLF OPEN DAY AT LA SERENA Once again we had a great day and an excellent turn out for the August Open Day of the Celts with their friends and guests. I suppose in golfing terms, he is your friend when you take the money off him on the day, and he is your guest when he takes the money off you. As normal here in Spain for the month of August, the sun was shining in the 30s with just a gust of wind now and again to keep us cool.

EL PLANTIO 2 SOCIETY MEDALFORD By Ian Henderson We had 17 players for our competition today some members came out of hibernation one I think was having lesson as he came back and won the competition but I get the last laugh as your handicap is cut well done Graham. RESULTS: NTP Hole 4 Ian Henderson, Hole 8 Graham Blakeway 3rd place Mel Hope score 10 C/B

La Serena was as normal in very good condition, except for the odd bare patch here and there due to the very hot weather we are having, however, Wayne and his green staff are well aware of this and keeping it under control, something that cannot be said for other courses in the Murcia region. Once again our thanks go to the staff at La Serena who

look after us very well at all times. Now to the lucky winners on the day:- Oh! by the way, the old geezer, sitting on the left is not a winner, we just gave him a shirt and sat him down to keep him quite, while we got on with the presentations. The overall winner on the day was Dean McCluskey with a fantastic score of 44 points. From now on, HE will be giving lessons to his father Mark... 2nd. was Alisdair McLean with again an excellent score of 43 points. Congratulations to you both and hope you are looking forward to playing off your new handicaps. In division one. The winners were Denis McCormack 42 points playing off a handicap of 6. which meant he played to scratch. Well done Denis. 2nd. was Geoff Ellender with 39 points and Eddie Wall 3rd. with a score of 36 points. In division 2 the winners were 1st. Dave Lock with 38 points 2nd. Dermot Carroll with 36 p615oints (He is the old geezer in the photo, only joking Dermot!!!) and 3rd. Julian Lopez (Captain) with 35 points. Well done to all the winners. The Celts Club de Golf are always looking for new members and welcome guests when ever we play at La Serena. If any readers interested in joining us for a day to see how you would get on. ROCKETS GOLF SOCIETY AT VISTABELLA STABLEFORD COMPETITION For our September competition it was down the road to Vistabella Golf where as always, the course is in tip top condition, even though it had been hollow tinned recently. There were some very creditable scores returned on the day but no one could top Ron Chambers who scored 38 points, and of course another cut in handicap, to take first place in the Silver category and the top score of the day. This was after he had been KO’ed by an errant ball on the second fairway. Now members are queuing up in the middle of the driving range in a hope that it will have the same effect on their game. Congratulations to Ivie Davies & Rodney Smith who beat Les Yates & Geoff Wild 3 & 2 in the final of the Society Doubles. Ivie Davies, no relation to second place Mike in the gold category, so it’s not a case of keeping it in the family (unless their father had a bike) came in with 35 points to take first place to take first place in the Gold Category. SPORTSMAN GS @LA TORRE 15 Players ascended upon the picturesque Golf Course of La Torre. Another of the IRM Courses that is shorter in length and relies on numerous subtle strategic elements to challenge golfers. Again as with last months outing the course puts a premium on accuracy and not power, favouring the intelligent player who can manage his or her game (well done Nikki). As with the time of the year many regulars sat this one out afraid (Sensible more like !!!!) to contend with the usual high temperatures. We look forward to welcoming you back next month. We had a late call off from a regular member due to his admission into hospital, we wish you well Kevin and a speedy recovery. The League season is about to start and we need you !!!!! Due to the closing of our Clubhouse (Sportsman Bar) we carried out the presentation at La Torre, hopefully next month we can re-locate to our new Clubhouse venue (The Club, Quesada) The scoring this month was a little lower than the last outing however Nikki Ead showed us big hitters how to play a golf course coming in with 34 points and the Days winner. Well done Nikki. The prize-winners are as follows. Nearest the Pins: Hole 3 : No Winner, Hole 5 :

SHIP HISPANIOLA GOLF SOCIETY VISTABELLA In assn with Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs For this month’s meeting a group of 28 players visited the established course at Vistabella under the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. For 2014 we have joined forces with the Lo Marabu GS who play their monthly ‘social game’ the same days as us so we both benefit from the cost economies of scale for booking a larger group than would otherwise be the case. This fixture was the second in the series of ‘friendly’ matches between the two societies and was based on the best of 12 scores from a possible 14 and ended in a win by the Ship GS by 375 points to 362 points and the series ending in a well earned tie at one all. The weather forecast was ‘spot on’ with clear blue skies and high temperatures with the consumption of much ‘aqua’ being the order of the day and the course was in excellent condition although was

very busy and the round took in excess of 5 hours as a result. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Paul Greenwood – 36 points, 2nd – Dave Bensley – 36 points, 3rd – Joe Goble – 34 points, 3rd – Bob Martin – 34 points Nearest the pin winners: Par 3 Derrick Cooper, Par 4 Dave Bensley, Par 5 Derrick Cooper We all returned to the Ship Hispaniola in La Mata for a hearty feed and refreshments prepared by Janet and her team with our thanks. The next fixture is on 13th October 2014 at Saurines de la Torre. Anyone wishing to join our society should contact Grant Goble on 667329772 or better still call in at the bar. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blancagreenfees.com.

We were joined by former football professional and Scottish international Eoin Jess for this event and his creditable 34 points was good enough to secure him the best guest prize. Eight of Eoins countrymen were giving course steward Daniel palpitations as they meandered from tee to tee, but not always in the right order.Hope they improve their direction for forthcoming independence vote. The podium places ;- 3rd with 34 pts & best B9 – Ted Harris. 2nd with 35 pts – best F9 & NP7 – Dan Connolly. 1st with a remarkable 43 pts off a handicap of 11 & NP10 – Ray Phillips. Welcome to single figure golf Ray. Next month we travel by executive transport to Alenda for the Captains Trophy – Defending his title just got a lot harder, who for? - You´ve just guessed it -Ray Phillips. Torry welcomed unbeaten Torre Levante to Vicente Garcia Stadium last Sunday. Formed as recently as 1976, Torre Levante compete in tercera div for only the 2nd time in their history. Last season, they narrowly avoided relegation finishing 16th, whereas this season, their young squad occupy 2nd place in the table, 10 places above their hosts. Unavailable for the match were suspended pair Jorge & Ekedi, as a result of last weeks sendings off at Ribarroja, giving Torry manager Galliana a selection headache he could well do without! And the headaches continued as the visitors took a 12th minute lead very much against the run of play. As the defence switched off Jose met a delightful cross at the far post to easily beat Oscar between the sticks. But even by this stage the home side could easily have been a couple up. First a Rani header cleared off the line and then a clear Leavante handball that the referee choose to ignore. The penalty shout on 29 minutes was even more

clear cut as Carrasco was upended by an extremely heavy challenge and then when Cristian missed a fine opportunity by shooting straight into the arms of the keeper with no other defender in sight we somehow knew that Torry weren’t going to get anything out of this half. Half Time Torry 0 Levante 1. But how things improved for the home side in the 2nd period when straight from kick off a weighted ball from Cristian played in substitute Cesar who buried his shot from 10 yds to draw the scores level. Alexis went close moments later as Torry piled on the pressure but once again, against the run of play, a wicked deflection from a Ritchi half hit shot had Levante back in front on 70 mins. After this the game began to fall apart as the visitors appeared to take it in turns to spoil Torry’s attempt to play football. Brani in particular came in for rough treatment as Levante picked up a succession of yellow cards for unnecessary fouls. And their indiscipline spread to the bench as even their manager was dismissed for getting a littl too involved. Final Score Torry 1 Levante 2. Next weekend a long journey up the AP 7 as Torry travel to Villareal.

DESERVED LOWER LEAGUE DERBY WIN FOR HERCULES HERCULES CF ..................2 ELCHE CF ILICITANO .......1 How times change. Just a few short years ago, four to be precise, in their first game back in La Liga newly promoted Hercules took on and beat mighty Barcelona in their own back yard. The Barca manager that day? Only the legendary Pep Guardiola ! While Hercules celebrated that notable achievement – it proved to be the only one during their 2010-season – Elche Ilicitano were just setting off for a season in the Valencian Regional Preferente, which would include two fixtures against Hercules B. Those three points from the Camp Nou notwithstanding, Hercules were eventually relegated, finishing a lowly 19th. It would prove to be the start of their decline. Meanwhile, over in Elche things were looking up as the Ilicitano's narrowly failed to gain promotion to the Tercera División, it was but a temporary halt to their progress. Successive promotions, the second as Tercera champions in 2013 have since seen Elche Ilicitano become an established presence in the Spanish Segunda B. Since their relegation from the top flight, Hercules have suffered a dramatic decline in fortunes, progressively worse final league positions culminated in the club finishing rock bottom of the Segunda A in May 2014. Every cloud has a silver lining, though, and this season for the first time in 45 years, there will be a Segunda B Alicante derby. With more than a thousand Elche fans inside the Rico Perez, the first match of the season between the two was, unsurprisingly, designated high-risk weeks ago. Three games in, Hercules and Elche boast identical records, each claiming four points from a win, a draw and a defeat. Today, then, something had to give. Hercules, it was, who blinked first. Following a largely uneventful first fifteen minutes, Elche Ilicitano opened the scoring and did so in some style. An inch perfect Sergi free-kick from the right flank was met by Mario Arques who gave Chema no chance with a superb, probably unsaveable, header. One-nil to the visitors and a response

was now required from the home side. They set about theur task with renewed vigour and only one or two crunching, local derby style tackles kept them at bay as, for the first time, Hercules began to take control. Elche survived until two minutes before the break, even then there was a hint of good fortune about the equaliser. Adrian Cuevas applied the final touch, via the post, to a mis-cued Fernando shot. They all count !! Not much changed on the resumption with Hercules dominating for almost the entire second half. Up front Elche showeed very little and soon began to be swamped in midfield. Time and time again the home side went close and the visitors were forced to defend for their lives. A stinging Carlos Lazaro shot had to be gathered at the second attempt by under pressure Ilicitano goalkeeper Pol. With time running out, Hercules found the net a second time only for Cuevas' header to be ruled out for offisde. He would soon have the last laugh ! Elche Ilicitano could have been forgiven for thinking they had weathered the storm and taken a hard earned point for themselves. Adrian Cuevas, possibly Hercules player of the match, knew otherwise and was on hand to head home in the 93rd minute following a left wing corner Pol could, and should, have done much better with. Losing so late was tough on Elche, but truth be told Hercules deserved all three points. Full time 2-1
