MAR MENOR ALZHEIMERS ASSOCIATION LAUNCHED BY RAQUEL PE Ñ A

Internationally known as a Flamenco extraordinaire, Raquel Peña, has spent another successful summer going from strength to strength with her flamenco dancing group. However, this week, her personal attention was diverted towards something other than dance, a subject close to her heart, and those of countless other people affected by Alzheimer´s and Dementia. Coinciding with the celebration of World Alzheimer's Day, which was held on the 21st September, Raquel was at the forefront of a press confer-

ence presenting a new association called AMMA on Friday, the Alzheimer´s Mar Menor Assiociation, or Asociación Mar Menor de Alzheimer in Spanish, which was formed as a result of people in the Mar Menor area not having any organization or association dedicated exclusively to Alzheimer´s and dementia patients and those who take care of them. The group started off as some British people who have partners suffering from dementia began meeting every fortnight to talk to each other and help each other. “From these small beginnings, with the help of Raquel Peña, we approached the San Pedro Town Hall to see if they could give us anyContinued on Page 2

She now dedicates her time as teacher, choreographer, consultant, lecturer and director. She still performs, and gives masterclasses and workshops (often combined with demonstrations) all over the world. As a choreographer, she is much in demand and has set choreographies for many dance companies and is a specialist in Operas that have Spanish Dance in them. In addition, she has created more than fifty works for her own companies. She is very dedicated to young upcoming flamenco artists and is much in demand to prepare them in every aspect of a future as professional artists. Raquel’s dance school has seen much success this summer with her dancers being booked at twelve new venues last week. They are also in great demand at weddings and private gigs. Raquel said ‘we have just been so busy! We don’t stop! This is how I do it, there is no time for me to get sick and no time for me to rest, we just keep going. It’s great.’ ‘I have such talented young dancers they really are. All this success has come from word of mouth’. Some of Raquel’s dancers can be seen at Rebate all year round, every Wednesday afternoon and evening, every Saturday evening and every Sunday afternoon. We watched on as dancers Luciana Ibanez, Paula Garcia and Daniel Asis provide a completely authentic Spanish experience with stunning costumes and an energetic and crisp performance. ORIHUELA COSTA BEACHES REOPENED AFTER TOXIC WASTE SCARE

Following an alert of pollution on the Orihuela Costa last week, the sample of deposits collected by the environmental department has been tested, and has been proven to be non-toxic. A statement based on the analysis of the sample stated that the four beaches affected by the arrival of an oil spill off the coast of Orihuela would reopen to bathers, and that “The Council has received the results of the analysis of water samples from the Enac Ensayos Lab Aqua and found no hydrocarbons, normal pH and normal oxygen content”, and so the green flags were hoisted once again on the beaches of Mil Palmeras, Barranco Rubio, Aguamarina and Campoamor. The matter found on the beach was originally thought to have come from the ships partaking in the NATO training Mine Detection exercise ‘Spanish Minex’ taking place off the Orihuela Costa, although a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence denied any part in the appearance of the discharge. In a statement, the ministry said that “In response to press reports about the appearance of discharges to the beaches of Orihuela, the Navy denies that it came from any Spanish or allied nation´s vessels” taking part in the Spanish

Minex-14 exercise. The ministry also pointed out that during the exercise, the Navy is simultaneously performing a cleanup operation on the seabed in the area, after two separate surveys were carried out by the Department of the Environment and Conservation, and did not detect any anomalies. The statement continued to explain how “The Navy operates a comprehensive control system to prevent dumping at sea that could harm the environment and meets the rigorous International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, MARPOL. Moreover, all Navy ships are assigned the task of conducting surveillance and maritime security in national waters when they are not performing other specific operations, one of the functions of this is the monitoring control of waste disposal from ships transiting our waters”. For the Orihuela Costa, the event at least led to the protocol for dealing with such a potential incident being implemented, all with the aim of ensuring the safety of beachgoers, and will at least have served as both a training and analysis exercise should a real emergency ever occur. Explaining actions taken during the alert, the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, told The Leader that things “can always be improved”, but “on the whole it all went well”.

MAJOR MILITARY EXERCISE IN ROJALES Following last week´s water based military exercises, this week the action moves to land, as the Unidad Militar de Emergencias, or UME, the militarised emergency services, conduct an emergency drill across the Vega Baja in preparation for potential flooding.

The primary focus of the activities will be around the Rio Segura river, following its path from land and towards the outlet at Guardamar. In addition to the UME brigades, fire fighters, the national police, including their dog unit, the civil defence, helicopters, ambulances, and other specialists will all be conducting a variety of exercises in preparation for the potential worst flooding in years, following one of the driest summers and drought. Between the 22nd and 24th of September, the teams will deal with a variety of scenarios, with 193 personnel and 40 different vehicles taking to their temporary base in the sports centre at Rojales, before being dispatched to deal with whatever the virtual mother nature throws at them, primarily in the areas of Rojales, Guardamar del Segura and Hondon de las Nieves, in order to improve their skills in containment, pumping, navigation and water res-

ration exercise, focussing primarily on communication, in the hope that everybody will be prepared to deal with this natural and annually occurring phenomenon.

VEGA BAJA PREPARES FOR RAIN In anticipation of the expected annual rainy season, work and preparation has begun around the Torrevieja and Orihuela coastline, to try to alleviate the potential risk of flooding after one of the hottest summers in decades threatens the worst floods in years. In Orihuela, a planning meeting was held that included representatives from the Cruz Roja, Provincial Fire Consortium, Local Police, water supply company Hidraqua, management of the Torrevieja and Orihuela hospitals, municipal engineers and technicians and the acting mayor, Antonio Zapata. One of the biggest concerns is now in some of the dry river beds, which had become inundated with an accumulation of rubbish for many years, but are now mostly clear, which will result in the potentially fastest flowing water evacuation for some time. The town hall of Orihuela has also asked the Ministry of

Development to provide water pumps in key locations, to ease the flow of water and offer better control of the evacuation. In Torrevieja, where heavy rains seem to create chaos in Torrevieja on an annual basis, the water Company Agamed have begun work on once again digging a series of storm channels along the side of the Torrevieja-Crevillente CV-905 road. The work will take in the stretch of road adjacent to la Urbanización Torreta III, the entrance to the Parque Natural next to vía verde and la calle Golondrina, to the junction of the N-332 at la

Manuel Gallud, Orihuela’s councillor of the Environment has proposed the creation of a "Garden of Oriolanos" where parents will be encouraged to plant a palm tree for every newborn in Orihuela. The councillor said that many of the details are still to be worked out but he is hopeful that the scheme could be introduced next year.

Much like the same statements made every year before the September rains, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, said that the works will cover a total area of 35,000 square metres, all of which will be treated with herbicides in order to delay the onset of plant growth and enable water to flow more freely. This work is expected to be completed within 2 weeks. Meanwhile, the management of emergencies in Orihuela have planned to organise an emergency drill on the 25th of September, to ensure that their emergency plans are in place and that everybody is prepared to deal, as best they can, with one of the wettest periods in the seasonal calendar.

Guardamar be present for the first time at the Feria Top Resa de París, the only professional major tourism event in France. It will share space with the Costa Blanca stand. In recent years French tourism has grown quickly in the municipality, making up 14% of all tourists who spend their holidays in the town.

SPAIN IN CHARGE Spain will head up the European EUTM-Mali mission, for nine months starting in November. Command will be under a Brigadier. The Spanish contingent is currently made up of 114 military personnel with the EUTM mission as a whole totalling 577 military personnel from 27 countries. This new responsibility is due to Spain's commitment to stability in African countries affected by Jihadi terrorist threats which was acknowledged by NATO at the recent summit in Wales.

Now, thanks to their links with Acquiro International Trading Ltd who purchased the company in the Spring of 2012 a whole new avenue of opportunity has opened up, and again it is a facility exclusive to Winning Express members. Prior to purchase, Acquiro had built a reputation in the bloodstock and breeding industry and it remains their core business. Managing Director Nicholas Thom explains: “It is the end-user, the person or company that purchases a yearling that ultimately takes the risk. Racing aficionados will be aware that the most expensive yearling ever purchased was too slow to even make the racecourse and then proved infertile at stud! However, the agencies involved will all have been paid significant commissions on the various deals” A bloodstock agent can enjoy various streams of income; a straight-

forward purchase and sale with a pre-determined profit, agreed percentages of sales, and even a commission on all mating fees. “It has proven extremely profitable for us” says Thom, “and now we are setting up the Winning Express Bloodstock Fund exclusively for members. Naturally we will impose limits initially so that as many members as possible can participate. Tax will be paid by the company at source and the contributors will receive a dividend of 2.5% monthly” The scheme will come into effect on October 1st. On the previous Sunday, September 28th, Winning Express are sponsoring the Help For Heroes Concert at Benidorm Palace. Mr Thom is delighted to be involved. “Obviously we welcome the exposure and there will be a particular promotion on the night itself, but it’s an extremely worthy cause and I hope we can help raise the profile of the event to the benefit of all concerned.” Anyone requiring more information on Winning Express activities should contact Denise at the La Zenia office or Nick in Javea. REDOVAN HOSTS REGIONAL HEATS FOR RADIO CONTROL CARS The regional Championship for Radio Controlled Cars was held in Redovan last weekend attracting competitors from all over Valencia, the Costa Blanca and Murcia areas. This is the first time they have been held in the town having been moved to the industrial area of San Carlos from their previous venue of Palmeral de Orihuela. The event was organized by the club president Antonio Baldó and winners will now progress to the national finals.

The sport is extremely popular in the district of Vega Baja, and the club has members in almost all locations. The meeting was attended by 66 enthusiasts whose hobby it is to build and pilot these radio cars competitively. According to the organizers this is an expensive sport which most people have to meet the cost of themselves. There are a few, however, who excel in the necessary skills, who manage to get sponsorship from private companies and only they are usually able to afford the expense of competing in European competitions. Two such individuals are the brothers Brian and Oscar Baldó, sons of the club President, who spent last week in Germany and now move on Italy where they will be holding workshops on the sport. The pair currently occupy 2nd and 4th rankings on the national circuit. Such was the success of the championship that the region has been selected to organize the 2016 European Championships which Antonio Baldó says is ‘a great honour for the people of Redovan’.

ORIHUELA MAYOR MAKES FIRST POST-OP PUBLIC APPEARANCE The Mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén of Los Verdes, made his first public appearance in his official capacity last weekend, when he attended a fiesta in his hometown of Torrmendo. However, he is not likely to return to work until at least the middle of October, if he keeps to medical advice. Having suffered a heart attack in July, Guillén undertook surgery to repair his heart and was expected to be off work for two months. His latest medical check up has recommended a longer period of rehabilitation, which would add another 4 weeks to his recovery period, resulting in his return in late October. Whilst sources close to Guillén say that he is keen to return to work, he has also been taking some time out to enjoy some of the more scenic areas of the municipality during his rest and recuperation. In his absence, the acting mayor, Antonio Zapata of the PSOE, will continue to lead the government team.

A number of large rocks had fallen onto the pathway below recently, prompting the town hall to close action. The company involved, GroGroup, had carried out a survey some years ago and so will now be able to refresh their information and create a safe area through a series of secure points and wire netting, allowing for the natural erosion to continue, but without risk to those passing by below, or the surrounding properties. THE URBAN planning department has received notice that their application to construct a new roundabout on the N-332, near to the Carrefour supermarket, has been rejected for the third time. It was hoped that by creating a new, alternative route from the main coastal road towards the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre would alleviate some of the traffic flow problems, but the only explanation given by the ministry is that they had already said no on 2 previous occasions, in February and July. A DEMONSTRATION is planned for Saturday the 27th of September, outside the post office on the Orihuela Costa. The aim is to raise awareness of the plight of a number of residents who no longer receive their post at their home and have to collect it from the post office. Seen by many as a

idents themselves are demanding the change. Meanwhile, the Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer of the Los Verdes, is planning to arrange meetings with a number of affected neighbourhood associations to see if a solution can be found should the move continue, such as the creation of communal post boxes. THE READING POINT in the Orihuela Costa civic centre has reopened for the winter season, and is available on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1pm until 5pm. However, the facility is in desperate need of volunteers, after some of those who had been helping out before the summer have been unable to return. More information can be obtained from the reading point, or from the international residents office at the town hall. Now that the summer restrictions on repair and maintenance work have been lifted, the town hall will soon be able to commence the much needed repairs to the walkway at Aguamarina. With all permissions in place and the money already allocated, the start of the work is now imminent.

The PP councilor Jose Antonio Aniorte has called for the waste dumping ground at el Camino Viejo de Molins to be cleared up as a matter of urgency. The dump is situated immediately outside the offices of the Policia Local and is not only a hazard to health but there is also an increasing danger of fire as members of the public continue to deposit cuttings and debris from trees which dry out and increase the risk of fire day by day. As well as the Policia Local Headquarters the site is also situated adjacent to a number of private houses. Debris includes garden and plant trimmings, trees and branches, old signs and general rubbish and because of the state of the site the police are no

longer able to use the area as a training location for their dogs. Indeed the current weather situation requires the police HQ to open their patio doors during the heat of the day and as such the stench from the dump often creates additional hazards as it spreads throughout the entire building. Aniorte called for immediate action to end this problem and avoid the police yard becoming a permanent dump.

MAJOR WORK GETS UNDER WAY ON ORIHUELA COSTA

Tuesday this week sees the final stage of administrative procedure being completed, which will mean that the money obtained from the sale of plots of land on the Orihuela Costa is available to spend on the planned projects. Although the process has taken some time to complete, the relatively new administrator of finances at Orihuela is now satisfied that all required processes are complete. One of the major projects on the Orihuela Costa is the long awaited renewal of the green area at La Regia. The original plans, which have been approved twice in the past, will see a dog park, exercise area, mountain bike track, running path, plants and trees and more, as well as a purpose built multisport area to replace the antiquated concrete fixture there at the moment. However, there is a problem with the section of land at the N-332 end of the site, in that the plot is currently subject to a court case. The plot was part of the original plans from the 1970´s and would have been destined to be given to the town hall as a green area, but the failure to register ownership has led to the plot being sold by one private company to another and the now subsequent dispute of ownership. As a result, the town hall is powerless to take any action on that particular plot, and so the entire project has simply moved along the strip of green land, the entire project simply moving along. Similarly, the town hall is unable to demolish the existing sport ground, because of the dispute of ownership. It is hoped that they will be able to carry out some work in the interest of ensuring flood water flow however. As this project falls under a 200,000 euro amount, there is no need for the work to go to public tender, and the town hall will invite companies to bid for the work. Over a matter of weeks, the companies will be able to submit their bids, and so, it is possible that the work will finally commence before Christmas. Other coastal projects which will be cleared for commencement from this week are the main road to San Miguel pathway work near the La Fuente commercial centre, the EcoPark, and repairs to numerous roads and pathways around the coastal zone, some of

which have never been touched for 30 years. The new civic centre where the reading point is housed is also set for an extension, as plans have been submitted to construct an “under build”, which will create a large and open hall type room, available to larger groups and associations and make that building more of a multi-funcHowever, in a follow-up press conference, the councillor for tional site than it is already. infrastructure, Víctor Ruiz, has pointed out that neither of the Although there have been previous calls for a thetwo proposed projects are possible, as both areas are outside atre or exhibition centre on the coast, Scheurer, the direct control of the local town hall, the Rabaloche area explains that it is not alowed to purchase a buildbeing managed and maintained by the hydrographical department of the ministry, the La Zenia project affecting roads gov- ing with this money. ORIHU ELA GRANTS IN Q U ESTION

Former Mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, has appeared before a press conference this week, partly to criticize the “lack of initiative by the government team”, and to state that the Partido Popular of Orihuela will submit two projects to the Alicante provincial council for funding, the first at Rabaloche, the second at La Zenia, in order to “meet the demands of citizens”. In the apparent absence of the official spokesperson of the PP, Lorente said that the projects would be presented at the next council plenary meeting this week, the Rabaloche project aimed at solving the water problems, the second improving traffic flow at La Zenia. Ruiz said that the PP should “stop taking people for fools” with their “lies”.

any municipality is 50,000 euro, which must be destined to a single project. During the same conference, Lorente also detailed how the provincial government has given 4.4 million euro to Orihuela since 2012; all invested in infrastructure and towards social and neighbourhood groups. However, offering detailed accounts of that investment, Ruiz disputed the figures, detailing how, in 2012, Orihuela received 26,000 euro in subsidy, whereas local groups received 105,000 euro. In 2013, Orihuela received 19,000 euro and another 104,000 euro went to other groups, and in 2014 Alicante gave Orihuela 180,000 euro for parks and gardens, 240,000 for the town of Mancebería, 60,000 euro for rural roads and 50,000 euro as their latest grant. In total, according to Ruiz, since 2012, Orihuela has received 786.000 euro from Alicante in subsidy and grants, to which the councillor asked the PP to “stop taking people for fools” with their “lies”.

THE PERFECT OCTOBER BREAK

ctober is usually a time of ideal holiday weather in Spain. A combination of long lies, sitting on the balcony of a quality hotel, sitting in the sun sipping a cold drink beside the pool, wandering down to the local seaside town, and days out to beautiful places at a leisurely pace, is just what the doctor ordered. So how about the following to do all of the above? The journey takes us through some of the most pleasant countryside to be found in Spain. Green fields, rugged valleys, pine clad mountains, villages towns and vibrant cities flash by. By late afternoon we arrive at a large comfortable 4* hotel which sits on a rock and overlooks the peaceful waters of the bay. Sundown sees us enjoying a tasty buffet meal, wine &water included. Then off to the bar, the poolside or the balcony to ease away our evening. During our week away we can decide to go down to the local towns of Almuñecar or La Herradura, both located in the same bay and both with excellent beaches. Or we can join the excursions provided as part of the deal. Excursions include a visit to the charming little town of Nerja. This town is so very typical of the Andalucia region. Nerja has a magic which has to be experienced to be appreciated. On another day we can head down the coast to the famous holiday town of Torremolinos. Here the mood is just as relaxing as Nerja. There are more people, more shops – both large and small, but again a large sandy beach and this time with a long elegantly designed promenade which stretches all the way down to the nearby resort of Benalmadena. Before we go to Torremolinos though, we will take a short drive up the coastal mountains to the rather pretty little town of Mijas. Perched on the mountainside and offering stunning views of the Costa del Sol, there are a surprising amount of things to see and do here. Street side cafes and a selection of all types of shops are topped by a 16 century castle, a monastery, and would you believe, nappy wearing donkey taxis. A really well balanced day out. Another day sees us in the foothills of Spain’s highest mountain range. The Sierra Nevada. Literally meaning the Snowy mountains. As the name suggests, despite being only 50 Kilometres from the balmy heat of the Costa del Sol, these mountains are snow topped for almost all of the year.

O

Almuñecar began as a Phoenician colony in about 800BC named Sexi

First making our way to the water producing town of Lanjeron. (You must have bought this famous water from the local supermarket at some time). This town also is famous for its spa baths and so also has a large number of Spa owning hotels. The castle, which can still be seen, and the town itself town were the site of many a skirmish between the troops of the Christian conquerors and their often rebellious subjects, the Moors. Next stop is Pampaniera. Very small, but so pretty. Not one of the whitewashed houses seems to be without a blaze of floral colour. Mostly Geraniums, but in stunning quantities. Home spun carpets line the streets inviting visitors to snap up a superb product at a bargain price. Natural fountains constantly spill crystal clean spring waters from wall mounted taps. Driving up through Europe’s largest chestnut forest. On the way passing through tiny villages and hillside hermitages, we finally arrive at the highest village in Spain. Trevelez. This is a journey unparalleled for natural beauty, charm and uniqueness. Then in the evening it is back to the comfort of our lovely sea facing 4* hotel. To relax, mull over all we have seen and look forward to another fun day, this time in Gibraltar. What a contrast this is. It is not often that

British territory is described as sunny. Gibraltar is usually the exception. A place of enduring history from the discovery of Cro-Magnon man, to the Moors spilling through Gibraltar from Africa to conquer almost all of the Iberian Peninsula, the conquering of the rock by British forces leading to Great Britain being granted ownership for all time, the numerous attempts by Spain to recover this lost territory, and of course all the intrigue in and around the rock during the 2nd world war. All this has created a sunny, British owned territory, with a quaintness which makes it more British than Britain, except perhaps for the Monkeys who are charged with maintaining British control of the rock. But then I suppose that is rather quaint too!! With all travel and excursions included in the price this journey is being offered by David’s Coachtrips SL Next dates 7 days 19-25th October for only 295€ including full board with wine and water.. At under 45€ per day we think this offer is brilliant value. Commentary throughout your excursion is provided by a well informed English speaking courier. NEW FOCUS RELEASED IN DECEMBER

ar manufacturer Ford has announced that the revamped version of its Focus model, which includes the European debut of the “SYNC 2” infotainment system 2, will be available to buy in Spain from December. The president of Ford Europe, Middle East and Africa, Stephen Odell, said that Ford are not satisfied with being number 1, but rather they want to “improve” with the launch of the “amazing new version of the Focus”, which will feature a modern design, advanced technologies and fuel consumption”, which will also be “fun” to drive. The revised model incorporates a new design in line with the One Ford strategy of the company and offers a five-door body and family version, with a renewed bonnet, skirt and trapezoidal grille. The renovated new engine mounts in the Focus provide a 19% reduc-

C

tion in consumption, compared to the current model, and will be available with a 1 litre “EcoBoost 100 horsepower” engine, as well as a 1.5 litre “EcoBoost” 150 and 182 horsepower version. There will of course be a diesel alternative, with a 1.5 litre TDCi with 120 horsepower, as well as a 2 litre TDCi 115PS associated with Powershift box, and a 150 hp variant. As for the driver improvements, the new Focus will offer a onetouch perpendicular parking system, as well cross traffic alerts and a brake assist system for in town

driving. In addition, the car will feature an adaptive cruise control or the MyKey technology, aimed primarily at parents whose children drive their cars, this allows the owner to programme a key to either allow or restrict certain functions within the vehicle, such as limiting top speed and even audio volume. As technological advances make us all more connected, the new Focus will also feature “SYNC 2”, a completely new version of

their own in-car operating system that uses intuitive voice-control to make calls, change music and control the navigation all without having to divert attention away from the road. Now described as being more intelligent, the system can respond to more “human” like demands “I´m hungry”, which will prompt the vehicle to find places to eat nearby. Although driving the new Focus may make you feel like you have

suddenly become Michael Knight from the TV series Knight Rider, there are probably limitations when it comes to a desire to fight crime and catch villains, although at least you will be able to park safely and make the streets a safer place from the temptations of the lesser experience drivers.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The Water Boys and the Orange Man clearly remember the daily deliveries of bread and milk to our home when I was growing up in rural Lincolnshire. However, over time, many of these much-valued services ceased on the grounds that they were no longer economic to operate. Local shops and small supermarkets were supposed to take over this much valued local service, and the days of the milkman and bread man’s daily deliveries now seem to be a thing of the past in many of the UK’s towns and villages. Although we do not receive daily milk deliveries in Gran Canaria, many homes still receive a range of other welcome local deliveries of essential products. At broadly the same time each week, the dogs in our road begin to create a commotion. It is a cacophony of angry barking, designed to let humans know that intruders are approaching. The barking begins at the top of our road, and passes from dog to dog down the road until our dog, Bella, picks up the urgent signal, which cruelly disturbs her from her slumbers, forcing her to join in and pass on the message in her shrillest possible bark. Why all the fuss? Of course, it is the water boys delivering supplies of mineral water to

I

those homes that have ordered it. Although we have water delivered Many of us will remember to our home in large bottles, it is the original Hovis boy often amusing to see a large pipe being dragged into buildings from a tanker in order to fill up a collection of not too clean looking reusable containers. Often the inhabitants are not at home, and the water boys have to return two or three times before they can complete their delivery and collect their money. It is a time consuming process, but as most people sensibly drink mineral water rather than tap water, it is an essential part of everyday life. We also receive regular visits from local farmers offering their current range of produce; often it is freshly picked tomatoes, bananas or onions, and sometimes vegetables that we have never seen or tried before. Occasionally we will try these unusual offerings, but only after the farmer has told us how to prepare and cook them. It is usually possible to identify which farmer is visiting simply by the sound of their vehicle or horn; one farmer even plays a tin whistle to alert potential customers of his arrival. The latest addition to our fruit and vegetable service is the Orange Man, as many locals call him. He parks his van just outside our village on most days of the week, always offering a cheery greeting to all who pass by. His small van contains a treasure trove of fresh fruit, which is a delight to the eye. Plump, juicy oranges, boxes of ripe, sweet apricots, strawberries and cherries are all on offer from his and his neighbour’s local smallholdings. The Orange Man readily offers samples of his produce for his customers to try before purchase, and I doubt many leave him empty handed. Inevitably, we buy far more fruit than we originally intended, but the prices are so reasonable that it is difficult to ignore. Fresh bread and bottled gas are also delivered regularly in our village,

as well as bottled water from a range of competing companies from Tenerife, and even from the Peninsular. However, the economics of such a journey, as well as the carbon footprint does raise many questions about the wisdom of such long distance deliveries. Home delivery services in the UK now appear to have morphed into a weekly delivery service from an out-of-town supermarket, together with a steep delivery charge. However, time and economics have yet to catch up with the islands, and we still enjoy regular, local delivery services, which are invaluable to the local community, and particularly for those working, the sick, elderly and disabled. Long may home deliveries continue. Would you Buy a Bra from a Market Stall - And Why Not? arket stalls of course vary widely in terms of the quality and service they offer and it’s true to say that they are more commonly associated with cheap and cheerful or even “dodgy” goods rather than high end quality. However, some stalls really are a treasure trove of opportunity. One such stall is “Shani’s Lingerie, based in Zoco and Playa Flamenca Markets. My stall has been trading in the Costa Blanca for 8 years and I offer high quality branded goods such as Marks & Spencers, Naturana, Evans, Ballet and other high end brand name products for a fraction of the price you would pay in the UK. My goods are all imported direct from the UK and Germany. In addition I can also offerl quality service which is often lacking here in Spain. These include a Bra fitting service and goods exchange policy if the size is not right or you find you just would prefer another style. I am able to keep my costs down by trading in a market stall environment rather than a shop and these savings are passed on to my customers. Our prices are less than half that of the UK. All Naturana Bras are 12 Euros or less and M&S Bras start from 3 Euros We also have an excellent exchange poli-

The Spanish government is poised to abandon its plans to drastically limit access to abortion in the country. The PP introduced legislation in December that would make abortion illegal except in the case of rape or when there is a risk to the physical and mental health of the mother. But sources told the press last week that the law would never make it to parliament with several regional PP leaders speaking out against the deeply unpopular changes, and with polls showing between 70-80 per cent of the population opposed.

PSOE PROMISE DOG BEACH

Having initially launched the campaign last year, revisiting it in April of this year, the Torrevieja PSOE opposition councillor Dora Fernández now says that more than 2,000 residents of Torrevieja support the calls for a beach for dogs in the city. Within the first two months of the campaign, the socialist group collected 1,364 signatures, which were then presented and registered at the PROP archive and records office in the city. Continuing with the collection of signatures, a couple of months later the figure reached 2,050 signatures, which were also presented at the PROP office, whilst the PSOE group filed a request with the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, that the government team discuss the matter in the May plenary meeting. However, the councillor states that “Surprisingly, despite citizen mobilization, there has been no response from the Department of Health or by the Mayor”. According to the socialist, “Torrevieja, being a tourist town, which lives exclusively in this sector, the PP government team should consider

that more and more people choose to travel with their pets, choosing those cities that offer more amenities and wellness for their animals”. “There are numerous, and growing, coastal municipalities that have decided to narrow a stretch of beach for enjoyment and bathing of pets, offering an innovative and friendly image with animals, this being an attraction for both domestic tourists and abroad”, Fernández continues, “since there are hotels in Torrevieja that allow pets, some with their own enclosures, the PP must realise the obvious requests from its neighbours and are demonstrating a new mistake in tourism”. Fernández says that “giving no answer essentially reveals two things: the lack of tourist vision and lack of sensitivity of the Partido Popular of Torrevieja towards animals. The PSOE of Torrevieja, confident that the petition of more than 2,000 citizens will bring benefits to the city, promises that after the elections in May, “When the PSOE rule Torrevieja in 2015, we will enable a stretch of beach for dogs in the city”.

ANIMAL ABUSE - NEW PSOE LEADER ‘SITS ON THE FENCE’ Whilst firmly sitting on the fence rather than responding to the calls for action, the recently appointed secretary general of the socialist PSOE political group, Pedro Sánchez, has stated that despite his group “respecting” the culture of bullfighting, he himself would not attend such an event.

sent, not part of our traditions, but we are deeply ashamed”. Organizers point out that Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty recognizes animals as sentient beings and urges member of the European Union to implement policies that promote their welfare states. The Toro de la Vega results in hundreds of people

The comment came in response to the build up to Tuesday´s Toro de la Vega, in Valladolid. With Medieval origins, the annual event results in waves of protests from animal rights groups, on account of the brutal treatment of the bulls. This year, 45,000 people took to the streets of Madrid in protest of the event, whilst the PACMA animal rights group is petitioning the European Union to have the event banned. IN the first month, 70,000 people signed their official petition which has been presented to the President of Petitions last week. According to Silvia Barquero, President of PACMA, “The vast majority of Spanish society rejects the implied animal abuse in this controversial conclusion, we as European citizens we repre-

both on foot and on horseback, chasing bulls with spears with the intention of the brutal killing of the animals upon capture. Pedro Sanchez this week said that “The Socialist Party has a clear position, respect the culture of bullfighting in Spain, but from a personal point of view, while respecting it, I will not see a bullfight”. In reference to the Toro de la Vega, whilst not offering any intention to try to encourage or even discuss a change in policy, he explained that personally, “I reject it, I don´t like it”, adding, “In the twenty-first century such festivals should not take place”. PACMA have expressed their disappointment in the uncompromising attitude of a leader who promises change, but have also vowed to continue their fight to have such events outlawed.

PACK HUNTERS TO FACE SOCIAL SECURITY BILL Spain´s pack-hunting fraternity has been dealt a sharp blow this week, after the Ministry of Employment has issued a helpful guide book explaining why they will now be forced to contribute to the Social Security system, an expense they previously enjoyed the privilege of being exempt. The ministry explains in the leaflet that as their practice is often lucrative and of economic value, then there is a need for them to be treated like any other business operation, and so, those who earn a salary above the minimum wage on a yearly basis, currently 9,036 euro per year, must common criteria for application of the common law of Social Security in all provinces and autonomous contribute to the system. BUSES FITTED WITH LIFE SAVING KIT Bus firm ALSA has become the first in Spain to install emergency defibrillators on buses, in order to provide better emergency assistance to passengers when away from city centres. The initial phase of the scheme has seen buses and crews on the Madrid to Bilbao, Vitoria, San Sebastián, Granada, Soria and Logroño routes prioritized, with drivers and support staff trained in their use. With growing fears of isolation following the huge reduction in emergency ambulances in Spain, the access to this lifesaving equipment in the event of an emergency could well mean the difference between life and death. Having the equipment on the bus not only means that assistance can be rendered at city centre bus stations, but also on the road between stops, and can be called upon in the event of an emergency outside the vehicle itself. The units are the latest, state of the art defibrillators, which can be monitored and maintained remotely, offer continual “teleassistance” and geolocation through Mondial Assistance, so they can be used with the maximum security and performance guaranteed.

BULL FLANAGAN GOLF SOCIETY - SEPTEMBER REPORT For their September meeting and 'Captains Day' 28 members of the Bull Flanagan Golf Society headed on a short trip to Vistabella golf course which is a very popular choice of the members and as always the course was well maintained and in pristine condition. The Captain got us all off to an explosive start as a shady character had exchanged his own ball for a special explosive one, but as expected he enjoyed the funny side of the prank. This was a 'hidden partners' competition so the players had to hope they had a good draw. The scores were very good across the boards and only one player 'Geoff Ashton' 39 point managed to beat the course and 'Graham Ball' 36 points with 'Colin Edwards' and 'Preston Ives' 35 points were not far behind. 'Geoff Ashton, playing off a handicap of 9 was todays individual winner and he would receive the 'Ria Gijzen Memorial Cup' which had been provided by the Captain as a memorial to his late mother. Winners of the pairs competition were 'Graham Ball' and 'Keith Smith' with a combined score of 69 points. In second place was the team of 'Geoff Ashton' and 'Bill Fantom' also with 69 points but losing out on countback of the back nine holes. In third place was

the team of 'Colin Edwards', the captain elect and 'Dave Smith' with a point score of 55. Winner of the front 9 was 'Barry Grinsell' with 19 points and the back 9 was 'Bill Peters' with 20 points. Nearest the pin winners were hole 4 'Steve Edwards', hole 8 Keith Smith and hole 15 'John Chatham'. Winner of the longest drive on hole 3 and best second shot to green on hole 10 was 'Steve Edwards'. Winnner of the 28ers free draw was 'Chris Stott'. After an excellent days golf players returned to their homes to prepare for a special Captains presentation evening with dinner, entertainment and election of the new

Captain 'Colin Edwards' and including the presentation of the Player Year award to 'Barry Grinsell' at the Bull Flanagan in Quesada. The Captain decided to add a Charity Element to today's event and raise funds for the Oncology Department at Torrevieja Hospital and this raised in excess of 700 euros. Well done to everyone who took part The secretary gave a brief resume of future fixtures and added the fact that it is important to register early for the events as late applications may not be accommodated. The next meeting will be at Alicante on 24th October and we expect a full day again.

In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services This was the first meeting of the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 14 players visited the established at Villamartin taking advantage of the excellent society deal from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The course was generally in good condition after the recent hollow tining although a number of tees were showing signs of heavy wear and the temperatures were slightly lower after the storm the previous night. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – George Curran – 34 points, 2nd – Mike Probert – 32 points 3rd – Roy Fry – 31 points, 4th – Dave Marriott – 31 points Nearest the Pins – George Curran and Roger Chapman. Best Supporting Act – Paul Cawte After the game we returned to the Spanglish bar, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their support. EUROPEAN CAPTAIN Paul McGinley was hoping most of his team could play in the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor this weekend as he himself set out the course to resemble Gleneagles. “It would be good practice, but I appreciate some of the lads are tired, and rest is just as important,” he told reporters. As long as they don’t rest on their laurels next week; and we see more happy snaps like this. THE 2014 VOLVO WORLD MATCHPLAY returns to England for the first time since 2007, but not at Wentworth, its original home. The London Golf Club in Kent will host the October 15th championship on it’s International Course, reputed to be one of the finest downland courses in Europe. The first Volvo World Matchplay was won by Arnold Palmer at Wentworth in 1964, and has recently been played in Spain and Bulgaria. Defending Champion Graeme McDowell said: “It will be nice to have the Volvo back in England for this 50th anniversary.” THIS IS WHAT you could have won: Desolation for Frenchman Romain Wattel at the European Masters in Switzerland. The BMW i8 sports car awarded for a hole in one on the 11th green had been snapped up the day before by a delighted Graeme Storm. BMW mopped Wattel’s tears and invited him to take his pick and drive for a year one of the cars on display in the tented village. At the Dutch KLM Open last week the prize for a hole in one on the 15th was a trip to outer space offered by XCOR Adventurous Expeditions. Unfortunately the winner, Andy Sullivan, suffers from altitude sickness, so he wasn’t exactly over the moon with his prize. Like Wattel, he would have preferred the BMW THE NIKE VAPOR IRONS, comprising the Vapor Pro, Vapor Pro Combo and Vapor Speed, were launched in New York last month. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who apparently had a ‘big input’ in their creation, were there to help promote them. The irons feature “Modern Muscle Technology” (well they have to call it something) that moves the CG closer to the toe, positioning it in the centre of the face. This apparently puts more weight behind the ball at impact to improve precision and stability. “Designed by the world’s two best players!” boasted a Nike spokesman, “Yours for just under a thousand dollars, and suitable for golfers of all abilities.” Yeah, right. AFTER THE RYDER CUP some of the European team will be heading to China for the ”Final Series” of the Race to Dubai. The BMW Masters on 30th October is the first of the four “Final Series” tourna-

ments followed by the HSBC Champions in Shanghai. The Turkish Airlines Open in Antalya is next, and finally the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah on 20th November. Rory McIlroy is leading the rankings comfortably, with Sergio Garcia and Jamie Donaldson trailing in his wake. After China, Turkey and Dubai McIlroy will be heading down under to defend his 2013 Australian Open title on 27th November, while Adam Scott will be doing his best to wrest it from him and win the Triple Crown. Perhaps the globe trotting golfers can all go home for Christmas then, if they can remember where ‘home’ is. “I’M HITTING THE BALL as well as ever, it just needs a bit more work.” Phil Mickelson was still upbeat after his unspectacular PGA Tour season effectively came to an end at Cherry Hills; where he withdrew after a 6 over par 76 in the BMW Championship. After recent comments from his rivals about his age and winding down Mickelson (45) says he wants to end the season with a win somewhere. OK Phil, just not at Gleneagles. EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB. On Monday 15th sept, we had our Aussie pairs comp, and once again our favourite very O.A.P. Don Martin with a little help from Young Dave Close, romped home to claim the cash, Don is considering turning Pro but this is the last Aussie pairs for a few months, thanks Mel for running this Comp. On thur 18th we resumed our monthly match against our Friends The Royal British Legion, they must be some of the nicest people we play against, on this occasion we won by 12 points to 2, 135-77, their Captain, Brenda Brown, was very gracious in defeat but promised us a tough match in the return next month. Our winners were: Yvonne Mallaburn , Elwyn Morris, Frank Close, Sheila Holcroft, Dave Close, Alan Holcroft, Sandra Kavanagh, George Whall, Bill Allen. Sheila Wickens, John Pooley Reg Fooks. Sheila Adams, Mary Elliott, Joe Elliott. Great result for the E.I. Very many thanks to Reg Fooks for organising this and many other matches, without Reg, how many games would we have? he never stops working. Don't forget with the Valencian matches over the next two weeks, normal roll ups have been suspended. Enjoy your bowls and keep smiling. Robin (the scribe) Adams.

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB Well done to our SABA Four Wood Pairs League ladies winning team of Sheila Stead, Sandra Heath, Mary Lockley, Angie Goodfellow, Jan Westall, and Cas Thomas, once again 'Girl Power' has prevailed to save our club reputation. SABA KNOCKOUT FINALS - Congratulations to our winning Ladies Pairs team of Lynn Greenland and Lin Miller for bringing home the trophy in great style. Congratulations also to Mixed Triples finalists Brian and Lin Miller and Barry Collins, Skipped by Lin they were pipped at the post in a match that required an extra end to separate the teams, well done to the victorious team from Montemar. Well done also to Brian Miller and Barry Collins for reaching the semi final of the mens pairs, where they fell to the Spanish International pair of Messrs Bonsor and Pain. THURSDAY NIGHT FRIENDLY - Quesada continued their dominance of this seasons friendly matches and after six years of Greenlands wins the trophy was reluctantly handed over to Quesada who richly deserved it. The score on this ultimate game was 12 - 2 to our opponents with Joan and Jim Oliver and Charles Langlois salvaging 2 points to save our blushes. COME AND GO LEAGUE - During the summer months several of our members took part in an internal league competition over 10 sessions, Charles Langlois eventually ran out winner followed by Joan Oliver, with Kim Hunter third (a great result in his first bowling season),and well done to everyone who braved the heat. All the squads for the coming season have now been selected and captains, vice captains, and selectors have been elected. GOOD LUCK .

finals due to be held at Vistabella on Friday and Saturday 3rd and 4th October. The Opening Ceremony was carried out in bright sunshine at The Emerald Isle where the competitors paraded onto the brand new green behind their club standards. Watching the event were guests, Cllr Martina Scheurer, Orihuela Sports representative, Jose Antonio Murcia, FEB Delegate Bob Donnelly and both the President and the manager of the Emerald Isle Bowls Club, Graham Roberts and Paul Moran. Bob Roberts handed over the green to the Championship Committee after which we had the usual round of welcoming speeches, followed by the Spanish National Anthem. The gathering then retired to enjoy a buffet and drinks. This is the first time in 2 or 3 years that many of the disciplines will be contested with only the mixed triples and the mixed fours being defended from 2013. The triples champions from Finca Guila, Charlie Speedie, Tony James and Pat Vaughan will meet the Greenlands trip of Mike and Florence Edwards and Graham Bater next Saturday at Vistabella while defending champions from the mixed fours, husband and wife pairings from San Miguel, the Colliers and the Perrings, will hope to get their title defence off to a successful start at the Emerald Isle in eight days time against Greenlands Steve Cantley, Brian Pocock, Mike Veale and Jan Pocock. But it was the Men’s and Ladies Singles that got the tournament underway on Saturday and Sunday at all 3 venues. Colin Lindgren, San Luis, and Maggie Furness were the victors when last contested in 2011. Colin met John Raby of San Miguel while Maggie decided not to defend her title. Led by Valencian Delegate Bob Donnelly the small committee of Fred Trigwell, Pam Lockett and June Jones have done a wonderful job in

pulling the tournament together and the trio fully deserve the congratulations meted out on them in the Tournament Handbook by the FEB President, Don Oscar Gomez Morante. You can go along and watch the games, entry to which is absolutely free, with the action taking place every morning for the next ten days from 10am, at The Emerald Isle, Greenlands and Vistabella Bowls Clubs. Paul Moran and Cllr Martina Scheurer get the tournament underway

VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice Vistabella were well represented at last Weekend’s SABA Summer Knockout finals and although our biggest success came in the playoff of the Men’s four wood pairs leagues we were represented at the Semi Final stage in four of the six disciplines, an achievement in itself. Our big success was thanks to Fred Willshire’s team in the Men’s Four Wood Pairs League playoff taking on Quesada’s team headed by Nigel Baigent we had a comfortable win by 4 points to 6 and by 70 shots to 32 just in case the shots came into play. We had two big wins from Fred Willshire and Ian Kenyon and from Andy Leggatt and Arthur Brown while Martin Foulcer and Richard Lee lost a close game by just 2 shots. In the main summer knockout finals our teams came up against strong opposition and unfortunately bowed out in three of the four disciplines at the Semi Final stage but in each case to the eventual winners. Sandra Burrows and Jenny Bowman lost to Greenlands Lin Miller & Lynn Greenland in the Ladies Pairs while Tony French and Mike Regan suffered a similar fate against Colin Jackson and Colin Lindgren of San Luis in the Men’s Pairs. Mo and Martin Foulcer had the tough task of facing Pete and Lisa Bonsor in the mixed pairs so suffered a similar fate leaving Gail Willshire to become our only finalist in the Ladies Singles. In the Semis Gail took on Sandra Jones of

Mazarron and after a really tough game came out on top 21 – 18. This meant she had to face last year’s champion Peta Rhodes who really turned on the power which unfortunately on the day Gail was not able to match allowing Peta to win the title once again. This coming week we start the Valencian Championships so good luck to all our members who are taking part let’s hope we can report on a few success stories in a week or so’s time.

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties The past week has been very good for the Club. We were represented at the SABA Finals weekend in all of the seven disciplines. Our men's fours League had a tough game against a very strong Vistabella contingent, but were unable to take the trophy. Well done to George Carnell and Dave Donovan on winning their game. In the Men's Pairs final, Bill Pain and Pete Bonsor were defeated on an extra end and in the Ladies Pairs, Peta Rhodes and Lisa Bonsor lost by only 1 shot on the last end. Congratulations must go however, to Peta Rhodes who successfully defended her singles title with a magnificent display of bowls. In the men's final Bill Pain and Pete Bonsor were matched against each other and Bill was the victor of this contest. However, all was not lost for Lisa and Pete Bonsor who took the mixed pairs title. Our Greenlands friendly league squad have had an excellent Summer which culminated on Thursday with an overall shot score of 1310 us against Greenlands 1145. Once again, this has been a very enjoyable league for both teams which culminated in a dinner with both teams participating. On Saturday the Valencian Championships begin so good luck to all our members taking part. For more info contact Joe Riley on jodiriley@gmail.com or telephone 96 572 5787.

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB Sponsored by Super Valu Congratulations must go to the team of Geraldine Fisher, Harry Dobson, Skip Gordon Fisher for Winning the SABA Trips, (see pic) A very good result not only for them but for our Club. This week MonteMar Bowls Club held their Annual 4 Day MonteMar Open, The Bowling has been to the Highest standard possible, and everyone who watched and took part can understand why this event is highly regarded on the Bowling circuit. A big thanks must go to the organizers Dave Melville and his band of helpers for all their hard work in getting this event under way. On Monday 15th September we started with a Charity Bowls Match for players that are involved in the main competition, A very good day was had by all with the winners from the El Cid Bowls Club, and a nice amount of Euro's were raised for Local Charities. On Tuesday the main event started, all teams having 7 Matches to play over the first 3 Days with the Winners of each group going through to the Semi - Finals on Friday Morning and the Runners up in each group playing each other in the

Plate also on Friday Morning. the Finals of both are then played on Friday Afternoon. Runners up were the team from South Leeds AKA MonteMar. Leslie Jones, Peter Jones, Pauline Woodfine and Barrie Woodfine. In the Plate the Winners were the team from Mazarron, Richard Cooper, Julie Cooper, Nina McKenzie, and Dave Green. the Runners up being the team from MonteMar, Denise Ashberry, John Corbet, Dave Melville and Alan Ashberry.

THE FEDERATION CUP

This mixed fours Federation 3 day competition was held under very hot conditions at San Luis, and with 15 teams entered it was played in three sections, with the Winners of each section plus the highest second going forward to the semi-final. All of these sections were keenly fought and the semi-finals consisted of San Miguel’s Alan Booth, Sheila Booth, Cyril Medley and Ros Stockell against Bonalba’s Geoff Dowson, N. Burgess, Chris Wright and Dennis Wright, which San Miguel won, with Bonalba conceding after 11 of the 12 ends completed. It was a similar story in the other semi where

San Luis’s Steve Simmons, Pam Lockett, Vic Slater and Mel Hughes won by a similar margin against San Miguel’s Anita Brown, Jim Jarvie, Val Hignett and Drew Gerrard. However, the Final was very different, being closely contested with the lead changed several times, and never more than two shots between the teams, until the eleventh end when San Luis gain 4 shots, leaving them 3 shots ahead going into the final end. Despite San Miguel’s best efforts they were only able to score 1 shot, leaving San Luis the worthy victors. Well done to everybody!

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘David Leadbetter Golf Academy Opens at La Manga’ Monday 15th September 2014 was the official opening of the new La Manga Club Practice Center and David Leadbetter Golf Academy and was attended by a host of local golf dignitaries and representatives from the USPGA BUT the thrill of the day was that David Leadbetter himself conducted the official opening, the ‘driving off ‘ceremony and then passed on important tips to a number of ‘willing’ golfers. The facilities are second to non in Europe and as you would expect the academy includes all the latest state of the art equipment to analyse both the swing and putting techniques and a group of 8 people had paid €2500 for a weeks stay, play and practise including personal tuition from David Leadbetter himself. I had the opportunity to speak with David Leadbetter who was remarkably approachable and signed a few golf hats for me for use on charity days and was quite open when interviewed about a number of golf related topics and for example when asked if he thought Nick Faldo had 6 ‘majors’ in him when they started to work together stated “ I thought he had perhaps 3 majors in him but he was so focused and dedicated to the cause, to the point of being disliked by many, that it was no surprise when he won more majors”. It was a pleasure to be at the event and being so close at hand to see the ‘master at work’ and was one of the highlights of my golf career. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. A slightly cooler morning greeted us for one of our major trophies of the year. The course was ,as usual,in excellent condition ,and the greens ,although slow, were recovering well from the recent hollow-tining. However, a few comments emerged regarding the rough, which tended to grab your ball and hide it from view unless you stood on top of it. Some excellent scores were achieved, although the winning score was as decisive as that in the Scottish Referendum. In 3rd place with an impressive 35 points was Graham Marriner, bettered by early favourite Alan Craig with 36 points. However, the Trophy was won by President Barry Thorogood with a magnificent 41 points and he was suitably humble when he received the Trophy at our 50's /60's Night at The La Marina Sports Complex that evening. Barry

also shared the 2's money with Carol Marriner. NTP Winners were two for Carol Marriner, one for Lynn Young and lastly one for Colin Yarnton who informed me that this achievement was very high on his Bucket-List. All seemed to enjoy the social evening ,and special thanks go to all the team at the Sports Complex ,and also to Woody for providing the music. Our next golf is at Alicante Golf on 2nd October with a 10a.m. start. Cost 40 Euros inc. Tostada and coffee. The list is on the board at the club. This week the Club fished the 3rd round of the Autumn series on the river Segura in Benijofar. The result of the match was a win for Derek King with 2.34kg, second was Andy Foden with 2.32kg, third was Dave Hoare with 1.60kg and in fourth place was Steve Collins with 1.40kg. The match the following week on the 28th of the month was to have been fished on the Embalse de Beniarres up past Alcoy, but as the water level there is now only just at 14% and falling it has been decided to move this venue, as to keep fish in a keep net for longer than an hour is very dangerous for them, as the level of oxygen in the water is very low. See the web site for the new venue. The level of water there is now at its lowest level since it was construed in 1958 and at the 16th of September last year it had 71% of water in it. Other reservoirs- Bellus has 7% of water and falling -Amadorio has 18% and is also going down – Guadalest is 36% full and falling but Pedrera is at 60% and the level is stable. The next Quiz night will be at the Bar on Tuesday the 23rd of September starting at 7.30pm. This has been moved from 30th September. Teams of up to 6 can take part and the cost is 1 Euro per person, so come along and enjoy a fun evening. The next Club meeting will not be until the 19th of October with the Committee at 10.30 followed by the General mtg at 11.00am. RAFA BRACE THRILLER FOR VILLARREAL CF C .......1 CD TORREVIEJA ..........2 The corresponding fixture last season saw veteran midfielder Carrasco score a hat trick in a 4-3 victory for the visitors and on Sunday, at the magnificent ‘Sports City’, CD Torrevieja were undoubtedly hoping for more of the same. But neither club has got its campaign off to a particularly auspicious start with the young Villarreal side sitting in the relegation places with 4 pts and just one win from their opening 4 games, and as for the visitors, who went into the season with high hopes of promotion, a narrow win in the opening game against Saguntino has been their only success in their opening 5 matches. Much of this, of course, is due to the fact that, on too many occasions, they have been unable to keep all eleven players on the pitch so for Galiano, the challenges, Im afraid, still go far beyond entertaining football alone. But in the opening 45 all the entertaining was done by Villarreal with Torry rarely getting themselves into the game, so much so that the home side could quite easily have been ‘out of sight’ by the half time whistle. Villarreal deservedly opened the scoring on the half hour mark when Torry failed to clear a corner. The ball fell kindly to Christian who shot low and hard from a tight angle. They should have extended their lead moments later after Alexis had handled in the box but an excellent save from Oscar diving low to his left denied Ferreres from the spot. On 40 minutes we saw 2 Villarreal misses in quick succession, both from Albert. After beating the offside his long range effort was touched onto the bar by Oscar. The ball rebounded into play as Albert moved wide. As Oscar narrowed the angle his second attempt was struck agonizingly wide. Leaving the field at half time, as Galiano applauded Villarreal’s ‘total football’ he must surely have

WINS TORRY thought that the game was beyond Torrevieja but a half time shake up which saw Cristian and Steve replace Mati and Cesar, turned the game on its head. The visitors immediately took the game to their hosts with Steve tormenting the Villarreal defence down the right flank. As he brought the ball into the area on 8 minutes he was inexplicable punched by Ferreres, brought to the attention of referee, Rafael Bueno Miralles, by an eagle eyed linesman. Ferreres got a red card, Torry a penalty and Rafa Gomez sent the keeper the wrong way to level the scores. With numerical superiority Torry were now attacking the Villareal goal at will with chances falling to Steve, Carrasco, Borja and Vicente but non did enough to beat Quique between the sticks and then, after their precision football had come to nought, the final munte saw Oscar try a ‘route one’ upfield punt. Carrasco gathered with a exquisite touch, squared the ball to Rafa who steered it calmly into the back of the net to secure, what at half time appeared to be a most unlikely win. The ball was returned to centrefield and Snr Mirrales blew the final whistle. What a game, and what a final result. We were still getting our breath back as we drove back down the AP7. More of the same next week, we hope, in the local derby against rivals Orihuela at the Vicente Garcia. Sunday evening ko at 6pm. Come along and support your local team, CD Torrevieja. SD EIBAR ....2

Two goals from Dani Garcia and Raul Albentosa earned Eibar a 2-0 victory at Elche in La Liga on Friday night. In a dour affair the visitors got off to a flying start when Garcia's low shot crept in after just three minutes. Albentosa's header shortly before the interval doubled the lead as Eibar made it two wins from their opening four league games. After a slow start Elche began to get into the game and Faycal Fajr saw his shot tipped around a Coro gets post by Jon Irazusta. The stuck in. hosts came out fighting after the break and Fajr had a corner tipped over by Irazusta before Jonathas headed the resulting delivery wide at the near post. Damian Suarez then forced another save from the busy Irazusta. The Eibar goalkeeper was alert again 2 minutes from time to turn a Fajr shot PHOTO from long range around a KEVIN post as his side sealed the win. RENDALL
