VALENCIAN’S CLOSE AT VISTABELLA
Almost 300 bowlers contested the Valencian Community Bowls Championship over the last two weeks culminating with the finals which were held at Vistabella over the weekend. The bowlers, who competed for 7 disciplines, were drawn from very nearly 20 clubs with competition taking place at The Emerald Isle, Greenlands and of course Vistabella Bowls Clubs. Despite the inclement weather experienced during the last week or so, Competition Secretary Fred Trigwell said that he was delighted to be
able to keep to the original schedule, and although there was some bowling in the rain there were hardly any interruptions at all to many of the competitors. This was the first time in 2 or 3 years that many of the disciplines were contested with only the mixed triples and the mixed fours defended from 2013. But it was the Men’s and Ladies Singles that got the tournament underway with Colin Lindgren of San Luis, and Maggie Furness from Quesada the victors when last contested in 2011. Colin got his fortnight off to a fine start with victory against John Raby of San Miguel while Maggie decided not to defend her title. Continued on Page 37

Hopefully starting on the 13th of October, an information point is to be set up in the lobby of the Orihuela Costa town hall, offering vital information on how to register to vote in the next and upcoming elections. The point will be staffed by multilingual volunteers, and is in collaboration with the coastal CLARO political group, but the aim is to offer administrative and procedural advice, and will not be politically motivated. Many people attend the town hall in order to register on the voting list, but are sometimes initially turned away for having the wrong documentation, incorrect status, or simply confused by the process which is conducted by an official in Spanish, some having to return and face the queuing process once again, others simply giving up. The information point aims to reduce the stress and hassle by offering the correct help and information on what is needed before the town hall officials are approached. Martina Scheurer, the Councillor for International Residents as well as the Orihuela Costa, explained that the “official form can only be completed by the town hall official, but it is sometimes confusing for those people who perhaps don´t understand what is being asked”, continuing, “this information point offers the chance to reassure those who need a helping hand, and guide them through the process”, thus making the concept of becoming registered easier. Of course on the other side of the process are those town hall officials, many of whom also feel the stress and burden of having to turn people away, or face communication problems themselves. The staff in the town hall are also fully supporting the initiative, as it will make their operation easier too. Although the elections are not until May of next year, the need to ensure registration is crucial now, as the deadline for being registered is the end of the year. There is a procedure for registering beyond that deadline, but that process is even more confusing, so it is far easier to ensure registration before that deadline date. In addition, the Spanish National Statistics Institute, the INE, are writing to a number of people to confirm their voter status, which is the easiest process of all, should you be one of the lucky ones to receive a notice in the next few weeks. If you do, and it will be a small letter with a foldable and returnable section that requires your signature, you simply need to return that form and your registration status will be confirmed. However, for those needing more information, then the information point will be the next and most logical stage. The operational times will be confirmed nearer the launch date, but as it will be staffed by volunteers, there is likely to be a relatively short window of opportunity each day, but once you embark on the process of ensuring your right to vote is registered, then you are on your way to also making sure that your voice is heard at the time it matters, during the next elections which will take place in 2015.

MESSAGE FROM THE NEW AMBASSADOR OF IRELAND David Cooney’s previous appointments include Ambassador to the Holy See (Non Resident) and Ambassador to the United Kingdom
Dear friends, It is a pleasure and a privilege to take up the role of Ambassador of Ireland here in Spain. I look forward to presenting my credentials to His Majesty King Felipe VI in the coming weeks and to exploring the range and depth of Ireland’s strong and varied ties with this fascinating and important country. In many ways, Ireland and Spain enjoy a particularly unique and special relationship, stretching from the very earliest prehistoric migrations to Ireland from Spain’s northern coast, up to the vibrant and contemporary ties of the present day. Indeed, there has long been a steady flow of Irish visitors to Spanish shores, from the early pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, through to the Flight of the Earls in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Today, the friendship between the peoples of Ireland and Spain is warmer than ever, with Irish people making some 1.3 million visits to Spain each year. Our trade links also continue to grow and is now valued at over €7 billion, making this country Ireland’s sixth largest export market. Ireland also welcomes many Spanish visitors, including thousands of English-language students who add to the brightness of the Irish summer. Our two countries have also benefitted enormously from our common membership of the European Union and will continue to work together and with our fellow Member States to ensure a sustainable economic recovery in both countries and in the Union as a whole. While promoting political and economic relations is a key priority for us, we are always conscious that the links that bind us consist of much more than this. The Embassy will therefore continue to develop an exciting programme of events to celebrate Irish and Spanish cultural links. There are a host of interesting activities of Irish interest taking place over the coming months, details of some of which are set out below: • The 11th annual Cáceres Irish Fleadh will take place this year from 31 October – 2 November. The excellent line-up for this year includes Fullset, Matt & Jackie, Sheela Ní Gig and Böj.
in Madrid from 27 November to 7 December. The show is entitled Beloved Sinner and deals with the last days of Wilde’s life before his death in 1900. • Madrid’s Bloomsday Society are seeking Joyce enthusiasts to attend and participate in readings on the third Thursday of every month from 7.00 – 9.00 pm at the Circulo Catalán de Madrid, Plaza de España 6. They are particularly keen to find members of the Irish community willing to read in English. The first reading will take place on Thursday, 30 October. • Joyce aficionados in Barcelona will also have an opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of “Dubliners” at a special event at La Casa de la Paraula this November. Plans include dramatised readings and music – more information to follow! • Celebrated Irish poet and writer John Liddy’s new book The Secret Heart of Things, will be launched in Madrid on October 20. More information on this event will follow. • We are delighted to inform you of the upcoming presentation of John Ford en Inishfree. La homérica historia de 'El hombre tranquilo' 19331952 by Arturo Seguro Fernandez, due to take place in October in Madrid. Again, further information will follow in relation to this event. • Finally, the Alcine short film festival in Alcala de Henares is set to feature several Irish films this year. The festival takes place from 7 – 14 November. I look forward to meeting you at one of these occasions in the future. More generally, I am very keen to keep in touch with the Irish community in Spain and with friends of Ireland in Spain – if you would like to be added to our Embassy mailing list for news of events and initiatives, please contact us. I look forward to continuing to work with you closely, and we warmly welcome your input and feedback on our work. Warm regards, le gach dea-ghui!

CHIRINGUITO CONTRACT BEING INVESTIGATED
www.yourlocalnewspaper.info
The anti-corruption prosecutor has opened an investigation into whether the award for the contract to run the beach bars in Orihuela was in fact “rigged”, as has been alleged by one of the companies excluded from the bidding process as they didn´t meet the minimum requirements needed to bid. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, has said that neither she nor the town hall are concerned about this investigation, which is simply asking for the documentation to be presented in order to clarify if there is a case to answer or not. Much of the controversy surrounded the require-
3
ment of a “Q” standard of quality, which the excluded companies didn´t have, but they were also not accredited with the ISO standards which were also required to ensure correct standards of management procedures are in place. Controversy also surrounded the fact that claims were made that the company which was granted to license to operate, Chiringuitos del Sol, had existing debts with the town hall. This was later clarified to be an outstanding payment, rather than a debt, on account that the town hall had never previously requested the money, but this prompted the company to clear a considerable amount of the outstanding balance, in excess of half a million euro, prior to the contract commencing.

POUNDLAND DEALZ COME TO ALICANTE
In June of this year, The Leader reported how retail chain Poundland planned to expand their European operation into Spain, with a proposed development of 10 stores under their Dealz brand. Now, that promise is becoming more of a reality, with the second such store set to open its doors in Alicante later this month. Located on Calle de Castellar in Alicante, the store will open on Thursday the 16to of October, having already created 37 new jobs and representing what they describe as “a significant investment in the area”. In anticipation of the opening, Store Manager Carles Cartes Fernandez said: “We are extremely excited to be introducing Dealz’s unique single price offer onto the Costa Blanca at a time when households are trying to survive on a tight budget. The price point for the majority of products in Dealz stores is 1.50€, offering customers amazing value. In addition there will always be a number of special promotions at key prices. Dealz is a unique shopping experience in Spain with a clean, bright shopping environment with friendly customer service. Customers will be amazed at what we have to offer!. At

PILAR SAVED HALF A MILLION IN ELECTRICITY CHARGES With the aim of saving as much municipal money as possible, the town hall of Pilar de la Horadada has successfully saved half a million euro off their annual electricity bill. Councillor for Infrastructure and the Environment, Iván Romero, said that despite the rises in electricity rates, the municipality has achieved these savings through investment by the council in the review and optimization of electricity tariffs, in the renewal of street lighting and shutting down points of light in areas where there are no buildings. “In 2011, the council paid more than a mil-
lion and a half euro in lighting of the town, now this electric bill is about nine hundred thousand euro”, according to the councillor. In 2011, the process of changing old fashioned lights for energy efficient LED illumination began, work which still continues to this day, “an improvement in energy efficiency that has an investment of only 430,000 euro by the municipality”, he continued. Moreover, Romero stressed that this intervention has made Pilar de la Horadada a pioneering municipality in the province of Alicante in the installation of LED lighting, because they have now been installed in almost all areas of both Pilar de la Horadada and Torre de la Horadada. The councillor also announced that the installation of LED lighting will be extended to the area of the old town of Torre de la Horadada, through the grant requested from the provincial government of Alicante through their Energy Savings Plan. The government team, led by José Fidel Ros, stressed that the full proposal is part of “an initiative aimed at saving and environmental sustainability”" a move that was supported by all councillors of the municipal corporation in the plenary.
Alicante and offer job seekers from all backgrounds a brand new, exciting career.” Poundland first entered Europe in September 2011 opening two stores in the Republic of Ireland. Trading under the Dealz brand, the estate has grown rapidly to a 31 store operation which was profitable in its first full year of operation, has already delivered a positive return on investment and has significant growth opportunities ahead. Jim McCarthy, CEO of Poundland, said: “The success of Dealz in the Republic of Ireland was a clear demonstration that we have the capability to generate positive financial returns in new geographies quickly. We have been very careful and thorough in our evaluation of further European expansion opportunities and we are confident that our offer and our model suits the Spanish market well. “We have a very detailed, low risk and low cost entry plan and the management strength and capacity, in the UK and in Spain, to execute it well. I’m confident that Poundland’s amazing value will quickly resonate with Spanish customers.”
HONDÓN VALLEY BRANCH OF TRBL CELEBRATE 8TH BIRTHDAY! The Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion celebrated their 8th Birthday with a huge cake designed as a poppy. Three of the original founding members were on hand to cut the cake, current Chairman Chris Wyatt, past Chairman Dave Stewart and Treasurer and cake baker Wendy Dengate. The evening also included a Photographic Competition, a picture quiz, a talk on welfare when we heard that not only does the Legion spend £1.4m a week on welfare services, but our Branch had raised over 45,000€ since its inception. A fantastic amount for a small inland Branch. Our birthday evening finished off with a slide show of photos taken over the past eight years of all the various Branch events and it was “a walk down memory lane” - amazing how different some of us look! It didn’t take too long to eat the cake either! Now the Branch is looking forward
to its ninth year and gathering new members along with new memories. If you want to support our British Forces and have a bit of fun at the same time why not come along and join us. We meet 3rd Tuesday every month 7pm at Monte Alto Restaurant, Hondón de Las Nieves. G’DAY MATE According to an Australian travel agency, Phil Hoffman Travel, Spain is set to get a bigger boost of tourists in 2015, along with Greece, and an increase in holiday makers heading to Brazil ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games. Ahead of its travel expo at the Adelaide Convention Centre, the company released its top 10 journeys for 2015, based on market research and inquiries over the past six months.
SNAPPY MATE The Terra Natura animal park in Benidorm has received a new resident this week, a Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis), which it hopes to match up with the current crocodile in the park in a breeding program. However, the 2 metre long and 50 kilo weight addition is still too young at the moment, so it is hoped that the relationship will blossom over the next few years when it reaches sexual maturity.
NOT HOT The government has extended the ban on agricultural and other intentional fires until the 15th of October, in order to continue to try to reduce the risk of these fires getting out of control. The ban, which also came into force early this year, would normally be lifted at the end of September.
NO NATIVE TONGUE According to a study by the University of Valencia, only 10% of the regional population will be able to speak the native language of Valencia by the year 2050. Clara Miralles Vila, who compiled the data, says that the language will soon disappear altogether, unless there is a policy change.
TRAVELLING DOGS After a new law came into force this week which allows dogs to travel on Barcelona´s underground metro train system, so long as they are accompanied by a human companion, the animal rights and welfare group El Refugio has asked that the same allowance be extended to the network in Madrid.

FLOATY LIGHT A satellite launched in 2009 to map gravity has discovered that there has been a change in the last five years which scientists claim is directly related to climate change. As the icecaps of the Antarctic have reduced over the last five years, the gravity of the earth has reduced exactly matching the collapse of the ice sheets. It is not believed that gravity will reduce so much that we will all float away, but the data does help to monitor the destruction caused by a lack of real sustainable planetary respect.

PEDESTRIAN PRIORITY
Having played host to a road safety campaign last week, and following the originally confusing implementation of bike and car shared roads in Torrevieja, the mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón, has this week stated that the next stage in the plan is to widen the area to much more of Torrevieja´s main street network. During last week´s conference, the concept of less speed and more bikes was introduced by the DGT traffic department, now, in Torrevieja, a new plan, named “ZONA 30”, will be fully implemented in the first quarter of 2015, aimed at promoting sustainable urban mobility, significantly reducing accidents, decreasing noise and CO2 emissions, and also involve the establishment of a regular lower speed limit with no requirement for fast acceleration. Although cars will of course be allowed to drive through the sections being converted, they will have less priority than other road users. Dolón explained that the new zones are not to be confused with either pedestrian areas, or roads where the speed limit is simply capped at 30 kilometres per hour, but rather combining road users to coexist in the areas, with more priority given to pedestrians and cycles. Road signs will be placed on the streets being converted, with little other physical alteration at this stage, warning vehicle drivers that they are in one of the “ZONA 30” areas, and therefore priority must be given to more vulnerable road users. Although much of the city centre is already pedestrianised, Dolón claims that the priority of pedestrians is still not always recognised, as many cars still drive on the areas to access parking garages and carry out deliveries, “ZONA 30 is a way of reversing this”, he says, whilst also reducing the stress of residents, making the areas “safer”, especially for pedestrians, cyclists and moped riders, although there has been no mention of reducing the noise caused by the latter.
FUNDS AWARDED TO WIDEN N-332 IN TORREVIEJA The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has this week expressed his satisfaction in the amount of investment grants awarded by the central government to the city, for the 2015 to 2018 fiscal period. Of the 28 million euro destined to Torrevieja, some 15 million will come from the Ministry of Development, specifically for the widening to two lanes of the N-332 coast road as it runs through the city. A notable traffic black spot for many years, the bottleneck is the only portion of the road ignored locally during the widening schemes over the last decade. The road also feeds one of the biggest cities in the area and the main motorway network, and often carried more traffic than any other road in the area.
The money to widen the N-332 will be spread over the entire period however, with 1 million granted in 2015, 5 million in 2016, 5 million in 2017 and finally 4 million in 2018. Dolón thanked his government for considering the appeals for funding to ease this nightmarish burden. An additional 12 million euro will come from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, which will be allocated as part of a Land Restitution Plan developed during the construction of the desalination plant to the south of the city. Again, this funding will be split with 4 million in 2015 and 8 million in 2016. Finally, Dolón states that 409,000 euro will be invested in 2015 by the state transport infrastructure section, aimed at creating a
new spur road from the CV-95, which will bypass the N-332 near the Torrevieja Hospital and desalination plant, thus easing the traffic even more.

REGIONAL POLICE MONITOR LOCAL MARKETS
However, officers from the Regional Police have already identified 11 illegal fruit sellers considered a serious risk and closed them down in collaboration with the department of health, discovered a network of three clandestine greengrocers, resulting in the detention of two people. They have discovered four illegal outlets selling snails, which led to the arrest of five people, and the detection of several points of illegal fruit sellers that have resulted in files already being opened. Since the inauguration of the special group of officers from the Policía de la Generalitat in April last year, a total of 362 dedicated inspections have been carried out throughout the region, 211 in Valencia, 84 in Castellón and 67 in Alicante. According to data revealed by Santamaría, “The members of the group have carried out around 10,090 patrols, have identified about 19,500 people and have made controls of around 30,000 vehicles. Furthermore, 84 people have been arrested, a total of 1.3 million kilos of products have been processed and 84 people have been arrested. In addition, a working group has also been crated that will monitor possible counterfeited goods being sold from markets, another problem that has grown in recent years.

CLOSURE THREAT TO BLACKPOOL AIRPORT s controversy and insecurity surrounds the Murcia regional airports of San Javier and Corvera, the same insecurity seems to be developing in one part of the UK, with the announcement of the threat of closure of Blackpool airport. Having purchased the airport in 2008 for 14 million pounds, for little over a month, the current owners, Balfour Beatty, have been trying to find a buyer to take over the operation at the northwest coastal airport. Like many smaller airports in the UK, such as those at Leeds, Doncaster and Nottingham, and midsized locations such as Liverpool, who is likely to be the big winner in the event of the closure, Blackpool had been seen as an alternative to larger airports such as Manchester, as lower operating costs filter down to the passenger, and many people choose to avoid the ever increasing delays caused by added security checks and queues at major hubs such as Manchester. However, having bought the airport at the peak of its operation, Balfour Beaty no doubt didn´t anticipate that passenger numbers would drop, with 439,200 passengers in 2008 when they bought it, now only serving 262,630 in 2013. Subsequently, the airport makes an annual loss of about 1.5 million pound per year.
A
A hundred officers from the Valencia regional police have joined a task force to focus on markets around the region, specifically aiming to combat the growing thefts of fruit and vegetables from farms. The operation, which was announced this week by the Minister of Justice and the Interior, Luis Santamaría, began on the 1st of October, with the aim of establishing and confirming the origin of goods being sold at both street markets and retail points. Santamaría said that although the officers will not distinguish between the type and size of establishments, “there are certain sites with more evidence than others of stolen material, and there will be more emphasis on those”, in particular calling on markets, roundabout sellers and some commercial establishments “that have proliferated in municipalities and cities”. Under the jurisdiction of the Guardia Civil and National Police, crimes against farmers in the region between January and July of this year have fallen by 10.08%, from 1,894 investigated thefts in 2013, to 1,703 in the same period of this year for offences investigated by the Guardia Civil, and a drop of 6.81% of those dealt with by the National Police.

Now, in a statement, the company has revealed that, “On August 28 2014, we announced our intention to find a buyer for the airport operating company. The airport operations have been making a loss for a number of years and we are currently exploring a number of options in an attempt to secure the future of the airport. “We regretfully confirm that if no agreement can be reached before 7 October 2014 which ensures the viability of its operations, then it is likely that the airport operations will close. In this event, we expect that the last commercial flights will take place on Wednesday 15 October 2014. “We apologise for the uncertainty this will cause over the coming weeks and we recommend that any affected passengers contact their airline to confirm travel arrangements.” Three main airlines operate from Blackpool, including Jet2.com, Stobart Air and Citywing. The case has been taken up by Conservative MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys, Paul Maynard, who says that he is “very concerned”, and that the airport needs an owner to stay with it for the “long term”, whilst calling for dialogue with Balfour Beaty. Other councillors from all local parties have also taken up the cause, with Balfour Beaty confirming that they had been contacted by Blackpool South´s Labour MP, Gordon Marsden.

CONTRIBUTION WELCOMED Spain´s gross domestic product rating has received a much welcome boost, after the inclusion of prostitution, drug trafficking and other illegal activities have added 9 billion euro, according to the latest statistics. The information released by the National Statistics Institute reveals the 9 billion euro came from a combination of drug trading, prostitution, illegal weapon sales and gambling, and contributed an additional 0.87% to GDP in 2013. The most beneficial activity to the country was apparently drug trafficking, which was worth 0.5% of GDP, followed by the illegal sex trade, worth an additional 0.35%. The contributions also resulted in a reduction of the country´s debt ratio, down from 98.9% to 96.4%, according to the Bank of Spain.
HARBOURING TERRORISTS The European Commission has announced legal action against the Spanish government, on account of the country failing to adopt the required security protocols in 20 Spanish ports. A deadline for implementation of the European Directive was set at 2013, but Spain has failed to adopt the security plan which aimed to provide protection of ships and port facilities, providing continental uniformity in combating potential terrorist attacks. The Commission has filed a case with the European Court of Justice, which have said that Spain will be summonsed to appear at a date to be confirmed.
A SLIPPERY SLOPE The cable car ride at Barcelona´s Montjuïc, one of the main transport-based tourist attractions in the city, was cancelled this week, after heavy rains caused a landslide that blocked the main access road. A funicular replacement bus service was put into operation.

BARCELONA - THE ESSENCE OF SOPHISTICATION ut of all of the magnificent cities of Spain, Barcelona is now arguably the most vibrant of all. Had you visited the city before the massive transformation brought about when Barcelona hosted the 1992 Olympics. You would never have dreamt that so few years later this city was to be the very essence of modern sophistication that it has become. Until that point it was the works of the exceptionally talented Antonio Guadi and a few other outstanding buildings which includes a 16th Century cathedral and parts of the 1st century Roman city walls, and of course the Rambla were the icons on which the city’s reputation depended. Of the Rambla the famous artist and writer Fredrico Gracia Lorca, was prompted to say “It is the only street in the world which I wish would never end”. When you see for yourself this action packed street full of buskers, entertainers, flower vendors, music and colour, you will understand why he felt this way. Lorca, like so many talented artists including Picasso, Juan Miro, Salvador Dali found themselves seduced by this exciting seaside city of over 1,500,000 inhabitants. Add to these old gems the Olympic facilities built both on land and sea for the 1992 Olympics and you have a city which offers a potent and irresistible combination of old and new which bubbles up into the effervescent excitement which is modern day Barcelona. The works of the eccentric but highly
O
talented Antonio Gaudi are not matched any where else in the world. From La Pedrera (The quarry), An amazing curved mansion which has been built in the centre of the city without a single straight line in its construction, to Park Guell. A park which offers what can only be described as a fantasy “Disney like” creation, to the breathtakingly grandiose pinnacle of his life. The Sagrada Familia, an enormous cathedral which is so intricately carved as to give the impression that is was formed in some heavenly mould. Sadly Antonio Gaudi was never to see his masterpiece completed, when at the age of 74 his life was brought to an abrupt end when he was knocked down by a tram. This was on 7th June 1926. Three days layer on the 10th of June he succumbed to his injuries. But what a heritage he left to his beloved Barcelona. A young Pablo Picasso also spent 5 years of his early life here from 1901 to 1906. Giving rise to a Picasso museum in the city which has 3,500 works on display including childhood portraits of the artist himself. Other things to see are the Magic Fountain of Montjuic., which is close to a former palace which is now the museum of Catalonian art. Then there is Pobla Espanola which presents a village made up of replicas of all the most famous buildings in Spain, the massive Camp Nou sports Stadium, which is home to the world famous Barcelona football club. The old gothic centre shows off “old Barcelona., while a huge range of national and international stores, a massive marina, and a stunning open plan Zoo ushers in the new face of the city With so many more attractions this city is such an incredibly exciting place to be. Including a day trip to the stunning monastery at Montserrat, this “David’s Coachtrips SL” excursion to Barcelona for 5 days Nov 3-7, and costing only 268€ just seems to good to be true. Based in a 4* city centre hotel, it includes an introductory city tour,. To reserve your place simply book online at www.coachtripsonline.com or call 966785910. Have a great trip!!

FIAT LAUNCHES LATEST DUCATO IN SPAIN
I
talian vehicle manufacturer Fiat has just released their latest commercial vehicle from their “Professional” range in Spain, the sixth generation of its Ducato model, offering a reduction in total operating costs and has new technologies and design. The development of the vehicle was targeted towards improving efficiency and value, whilst focussing on increasing technology. To do this, the company claims to have improved the strength and durability of the van, as well as introducing innovative elements with what they are calling “a customer-oriented design”. Described as resembling a Spartan Warrior helmet, the most striking visual element is the front end of the vehicle, where ergonomic LED lighting wraps around the shape of the mean and forceful image. Compared to the previous generation, the new Ducato has a range of engines that have fuel consumption and emissions 10% lower than before, with a combined benefit of a reduction in overall weight. The new Fiat Professional model will be offered with a total of three dif-
ferent engines, with four power options, delivering 115, 130, 150 or 180 hp, with a robotised gearbox. Inside the vehicle, the most modern element here involves the introduction of the “UConnect” infotainment system with navigation and driving aids, which can not only monitor tyre pressure, it also keeps an eye on traffic signals, warns of lane departure, has a hill descent and cruise control, amongst others key elements. If those two key elements alone don´t satisfy or tantalise you into choosing this particular van, then you have nothing to worry about as you can choose from a staggering 1,000 different body variants, or an awe inspiring 10,000 different options, including varying capacity of between 8 and 17 cubic metres and accommodation for up to 17 people. As a commercial vehicle, the price is also somewhat competitive, especially given the different design capabilities to fit the need of the client, with a standard package price coming in at 17,633 euro for the basic model version with 115 hp engine, up to the top-end factory version at 26,064 euro.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Family and Community Matter Many expats living in Spain fail to recognise the importance of family and community to the Spanish people. Unlike many Northern European countries, where the sick and elderly are shipped off to hospitals, care homes and hospices, it is still the culture in many Mediterranean countries that families generally take care of their own. I often receive complaints from expats living in Spain about the overall care in both National Health, as well as private hospitals. Complaints are rarely about the quality of medical care, which by all accounts, could not be higher in any part of Europe. However, there is a heavy reliance upon family and close friends to provide basic nursing and aftercare following surgery. Cleaning and washing patients, providing some food and feeding patients is usually carried out by close family members, unlike hospitals in the UK, Germany and Sweden, where this kind of care is normally regarded as basic nursing and included within hospital care. Much of this family and community care is down to culture. In Spain, for instance, family groups provide care at all stages of life, with the family acting as a kind of safety net. From the birth of a baby to the last days of a much-loved grandparent has traditionally been the responsibility of the immediate family. Grandparents are usually on hand to assist with bringing up the children of their sons and daughters, with plenty of aunts and uncles to act as baby-sitters along the way. When grandparents, or indeed great grandparents become too ill
or frail to care for themselves, it is the younger members of the family who are expected to take care of them. In the Canary Islands, many parents are in their teens when they give birth. It is customary for the young couple to live with one of the couple’s parents until the time comes for them to find a home of their own. Traditionally, properties have been extended, garages turned into apartments, or another floor added to a dwelling to provide a home for the young couple. In time, it is the parents who, as grandparents, move into the garage, annex There is much more or roof conversion and it is the turn reliance upon family and of the young couple to take over the close friends in Spain family home. Of course in recent years, following the many problems created by the economic recession, the pattern has changed, particularly in cities and urban areas. Family members have had to travel further from their home towns and villages to find work, and this kind of family and community care is no longer possible. As a result, there are more family breakdowns and single parents than there have been in previous generations. Social attitudes to religion have also changed in the last ten years or so, with many Spaniards admitting that they no longer attend church. This is something that would have been unthinkable in the past, but was all part of the hidden community and social adhesive, which held families and communities together. However, in rural communities, villages and the islands, little has changed. This pattern of community and family life tends to create problems for expats, and is often the reason why sick, elderly and frail expats fail to find the support that they need later in life. It is simply not built into the system. The care from medical centres and hospitals will probably be very good, but do not expect to find a Macmillan nurse available to assist in matters relating to end of life or cancer related illness. There
are few hospices to deal with end of life care, and those that do exist are mostly run by religious orders. It is important that all expats, young and old, should consider the options open to them later on in life and to make appropriate provision, and not to expect your adopted country to look after you. They will do their best, but it may not be what you would expect from the country of your birth in your final years. It is yet another reminder that being an expat means not only sipping gin and tonics in the sun, but accepting and adjusting to the customs and traditions of your newly adopted country - warts and all. ROCAMER FUNERAL INSURANCE
have all heard those famous words spoken by Michael Parkinson, ‘We’d all like to leave something for our loved ones to help with our funeral costs’. Well, Funeral Insurance arranged through Rocamer goes much, much further. Not only are ALL funeral costs covered but all arrangements are taken care of in consultation with the family. In addition to Mr Parkinson’s offer you will not have to be insured for a minimum of two years before a claim is acceptable. Full cover is immediate. Added to this favourable offer you will also receive Death by Accident cover of 6000,00€ and be able to enjoy discounted private dental and medical treatment. All of the above for a monthly premium, for a person of 50 years of age, of only 11.80€. Compare this against current average costs of 5,000.00€ for a funeral and the advantages are clear to see. Having discussed the very attractive cost and cover it time then to focus on the real benefit for many. The ‘Peace of Mind’ in knowing that despite living in a foreign country, away from family, when your time comes, sons, daughters, grand children need not worry about costs, contact or funeral arrangements. We will also transport family from home to tanatorio. We are here at the end of the phone 24/7 and in English. Rocamer are mindful that it takes time for family to arrive and for that reason they give their clients up to 7 days in their tanatorios
We
FREE OF CHARGE. Other tanatorios may charge 300€ to 400€ per day after the first 24 hours. Unlike some companies we do not sign you up then pass you on. You become our personal responsibility. Rocamer is a local Spanish family business of Tanatorios & Crematorio who have been in business close on 80 years. This does not happen by luck. It is the professionalism, integrity and public appreciation that allows this to happen. I have been working with Rocamer for almost 10 years and would not have done so if the previous statement were not true. So call me today to discuss what we can do for you. See our ad across the page...... Testimonial...... It was purely coincidental that this letter, letter, completely unsolicited, was recently received at the Leader Newspaper. Newspaper. Dear Editor, I feel I must write and praise Rocamer funeral plans as I am always quick to critisise bad service. A friend died quite suddenly and although a number of us too out this insurance none of us had need to use it until last Thursday. From the minute I phoned Keith from the company we got even better than first-class service. The deceased was collected from the Vega Baja hospital with great dignity and Keith arrived at the deceased's home that afternoon to arrange the funeral. We had to do nothing except choose the music. Everything was taken care of from the flowers to the beautiful car which took us to San Pedro. Keith arranged the minister who conducted a beautiful sevice. We have seen other large wellknown Funeral Plans make a total mess of arrangements and cause untold distress to the bereaved families so please beware. Hilary Petrie, Daya Nueva

YOUR TELEVISION HIGHLIGHTS
B
efore we start with this week´s future overview, I need to clear up a little mistake in last week´s. I know quite a lot of you noticed the mistake, given the emails and messages received, but we were of course talking about Endeavour returning, not Lewis, which focuses on the early life of Chief Inspector Morse. As for this week, we´re jumping over to America first of all, with the news that Desperate Housewives follow-up, Devious Maids, has been recommissioned for a third series. Not that will be too much of a surprise for fans who saw the season 2 finale, with a drive –by shooting at a wedding. No more spoilers though, just the news that it will return soon. Our attention will also be turning to the Christmas schedules before long too, as is the case already with Channel 4, as filming began this week on a Charlie Brooker penned Christmas special. Perhaps not know for his stories focusing on the jollier side of life, it may well turn into a dark and sinister tale then the “heart-warming comedy-drama for all the family” sees a young brother and sister help Santa when his satnav goes wrong and he crash-lands near Beaconsfield on Christmas Eve. Just to prove it won´t be all mince pies and carrots, the show is described as a “deeply disturbing dystopian technonightmare that will unsettle and chill viewers to their core”. Whilst we´re on the subject of Christmas, and
before you start moaning, we know it´s only October, ITV´s Text Santa is already making plans for a return, with Alesha Dixon joining the presenter line-up. The singer and Britain’s Got Talent judge partners Paddy McGuinness for one hour of the charity appeal extravaganza on Friday the 19th of December. Other crackers on offer are the likes of George Clooney in a specially-written scene of Downton Abbey, and the stars of Coronation Street perform as we’ve never seen them before. Taking our attention back from Christmas now though, Martin Clunes is to play the celebrated novelist and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a three-part adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel, Arthur & George for ITV, which is based on an intriguing series of true events in the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who famously created the detective Sherlock Holmes. Filming also began this week in London and Staffordshire. Filming has also begun this week on a new ITV drama starring two of the UK’s most renowned actors, David Threlfall and John Simm. Code of a Killer is based on the extraordinary true story of Alec Jeffreys’ discovery of DNA fingerprinting and its first use by Detective Chief Superintendent David Baker in catching a double murderer. The BBC has also announced acting royalty joining the cast of The Go-Between, airing on BBC One next year as part of its season of classic 20th century literature. Jim Broadbent is playing the older Leo
while Vanessa Redgrave has taken on the role of the older Marian. Both actors have a strong connection to The Go-Between. Redgrave’s father, Michael, played the Older Leo in the first adaptation in 1971. Broadbent meanwhile appeared as an extra in the same adaptation in his first ever, albeit uncredited, film role. Broadbent says: “Having been an extra in
Hughes and aerial archaeologist Ben Robinson look down on sites of great historical interest to gain a brand new perspective and uncover further information about our ancestors. Nothing new there perhaps, but this time they are using an octocopter, a remote controlled helicopter carrying a camera. Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, Jim Broadbent will join Vanessa Redgrave in the cast of The Go-Between
the first adaptation of The Go-Between in 1971 I was thrilled to be asked to be in this new version. It is a tremendous novel and Adrian Hodges’ script captures it perfectly“. Finally, history fans have something of a modern twist show to look forward to as historian Bettany
Stonehenge, Maiden Castle, Sutton Hoo, The Antonine Wall and Old Sarum in Wiltshire will all get the drone flyby treatment, and will subsequently reveal a new insight into our nation’s story showing Britain’s stunning landscapes through fantastic aerial views.

TAX ASSISTANCE - NO PLACE TO HIDE Tax will probably be the last thing on your mind as you pack up your home and relocate to the country of your dreams. However, it may become your main focus if you fail to leave your tax affairs in order in the country you have just left. If you also fail to leave forwarding address the problems may quietly fester away and you may be accruing daily interest and penalties. One thing is certain, it won’t go away! These days we see countries working together to collect outstanding taxes. In the UK, HMRC has a team called the Mutual Assistance in the Recovery of Debt team (MARD), and other countries have similar arrangements. The rules are very complicated, but the bit you need to remember is that a tax debt left behind is likely to reappear in the form of a tax demand from one of these teams. Put simply, MARD is an arrangement which allows certain countries to ask HMRC for assistance in obtaining information, serving legal documents or recovering a tax or duty debt. All foreign tax debts referred under these arrangements are recovered in the same way as UK income tax debts. As this is definitely something to avoid, we thought a guide explaining what you should do as you leave or come back into the UK might be useful. Leaving the UK Tell HMRC - who will tell you if you need to complete a Self-Assessment form, P85 (leaving the UK, getting your tax right) or both. They will use the information you give them to decide if you are due a refund or owe tax, and to decide on your residency status. You may have to continue completing UK self-assessment returns if you keep any property or investments in the UK. Consider whether you wish to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions while you are away. It might be useful if you intend to claim the UK State Pension. If you are entitled to tax credits or Child Benefit in the UK, you may still be able to receive them after you have left. This will depend on how long you are leaving for and what country you are going to.
Arriving in the UK Tell HMRC - who will use the information you give them to determine your residency status and whether you are due to pay UK tax. Inform the tax authority of the country you are leaving and give a forwarding address. Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Tax rules vary from country to country. For example, if you are selling property, you need to understand the CGT rules of that country. It is not unusual to see cases where a lack of CGT understanding has subsequently led to massive tax bills and penalties. Often, on investigation, it is clear that if the correct tax advice had been given when the property was first purchased it could all have been avoided. Costs for legal advice may seem high but complicated rules and language barriers can leave you vulnerable. This article is by Tax Help for Older People (operated by registered charity no 1102276), offering free tax advice to older people on lower incomes. Our Helpline number is 0845 601 3321 or geographical 01308 488066.

Highest finish: 100 Stuart Clark (Que Pasa Eagles) Judging by the time one or two games finished in Division 1, teams found the new best of 3 format in the singles a bridge too far. More than likely too much sun, cobwebs and lack of practice from my own point of view. The substitution of an extra triple for the laborious 6 a side team game was a popular decision at the AGM and has obviously proved quicker. Previously the half time break after the first 6 legs came around 10 p.m. or earlier. The new format will improve that time and teams should ensure the break lasts for a maximum of 15 minutes. One problem highlighted last term was the quality of fayre served by the home sides. Traditionally it has been a snack to be enjoyed with a beer or two but now we are enjoying the culinary delights of the superb kitchens most bars have. As a guide the second half should commence at 10.15 p.m. with the match over by 11.30 p.m. or earlier. This all depends of course on the starting time which must be 8.45 p.m. to ensure those of us who wish to be tucked up in bed before midnight, can. The Pint Depot Kings entertained the Meerkats for the opening match of the season and for some reason appeared to have stage fright. Countless missed doubles and lost darts from last season´s league plate winners were a disappointment in a match anticipated to be close. The exception was Gary Minor who managed to mix a fair share of chalking with some fine arrow throwing. In fact it was Minor who took the Kings first leg of the evening, albeit the 11th, against Graham Todd in a tight match 2-1. Minor´s haul of 3x140, 1x100 and a handful of 80 pluses earned him the King´s man of the match by a mile. The King´s total of 6 tons was totally eclipsed by the opposition who managed 22 tons and ton pluses. Current merit table champion Pat Abrams acquitted himself reasonably well with 4 tons and a couple of game shots. Alex Nikolov talked his way through most of his legs but still managed 7 tons, the most individual scores of the night.
Eddie Fozzard was the King´s other victor taking out Alan Ostrowski 2-1 on D2 for the third leg. Dave Wright was missing from the King´s line up this week, team mates will be hoping he is around for the visit to The Porter House. Whilst on the subject, the Porters had a tough first match against last season´s runners up Que Pasa Eagles. Ray Sanderson has strengthened his side this term with former Hunk and Meerkat, Sid Cross. Unfortunately the popular traveller had family commitments and missed his new side´s opening defeat. The visitors started well enough winning two of the three triples available, courtesy of captain Sanderson D3 and Peter Ayres D2. John Walker replied for Que Pasa on D2 and also contributed 138,95,140,100 in the two legs he played. Some darts! A ton apiece from Porter´s Brian Nash and Eagles Joe Cuyt made it a tight finish in the first doubles Stuart Clark hitting D1 to level. Jim Storey D4 put the hosts one in front with one double to play. Eagle Walker showed what he can do by pummelling the T20 hitting 125,140,100,100,D4 to leave Ayres and Yvonne Rouffignac shell shocked, the score line 4-2. Sue Sanderson had a fine match against Kevin Wood scoring a 111 and double to take the leg to 3, Wood´s 2x100 was enough however as he took the first on D18 and the third on D13. Nash had the task of taking out Walker but 2x100 and D16 in the first and a 140 plus D4 for 2-0 was enough to take out the plucky Porter who had hit 97 for a double in the second. Captain Sanderson was on next to retrieve the situation at 6-2, facing Storey. The Eagle took the first on D16 and opened up with a ton, Sanderson replied with one of his own and closed the leg on D15 (1-1). Storey moved up a gear scoring 2x100 and eventually going out on D1 for the match. Con Rouffignac pulled one back for the Porters wining two of three on D8 and D2, opponent Cuyt taking the middle leg with 125 and D10. A nice ton out (T20,S20,D10) from Clark was levelled by Ayres on D8 taking the match to three legs. Despite a ton from Clark, Ayres took the game on D20. In the 12th and last leg Yvonne Rouffignac took the middle leg with a 98 and D8 but it was Storey on D9 and D18 to take the third and overall match 8-4. John Walker´s tally of 3x140, 1x138, 1x125, 5x100 and a miserly 95 was exceptional, one to avoid even if you are on form. Busters will be hoping to improve on a good season last term and showed their intentions with an excellent away victory at the Junction. That man again Mark Filer taking the match at 7-3, with the Jackals
taking the last two. The hosts had a good start 2-1 up after the triples, John Osborne 140,D4, Andy Gildea D20 doing the damage, Filer replying with 100 and D10, Phil de Lacy and Henry Young contributing tons. The established pairing of Filer and Shirley Roberts levelled the match, Filer hitting 135, Roberts D10. Irene Russell put Busters in front for the first time on D19 despite a ton from Steph Simpson. Paul Dowington made it all three pairs on D4 for 2-4. Will Drummond 100,125,D7 and D1 made it 5 for the visitors as the inimitable Irene Russell attempted to take the match to 6 legs and at least the draw. At over 40 years of age I don’t know how she does it but 140,120,D20 took the first, Gildea hit a ton of his own in the second but superwoman hit a further 121 and D8 for 0-2 and at least a valuable point. Mike Jones had a reasonable debut for the Jackals wining in straight legs with 121,100,D5 and D1 to reduce the deficit. As previously mentioned Filer made it 7 legs for Busters and both points, but had to come from behind after Kenny Wilkinson had showboated on a 65 out, hitting D8,S17 and D16. Filer´s response was a ton, D10 and D20. Steph Simpson´s 2x100,D10 and D8 was just too much for Babs Warren 100. De Lacy D2,D8 completed the match for 5-7. Ralph Weatherby informs me their home match against the Junction Jaguars was very enjoyable with plenty of good humour banter. Their 4-2 half time score line was repeated in the second half for a convincing win over merit table winner Simone de Lacy´s Jaguars. Captain Tracy Simpson couldn’t find the form she is capable of to let in Justin Hepburn to take the all important 7th leg on D4. Man of the match was the Tavern´s Stuart Mitchell. Two newcomers to the League Evolution and Que Pasa Kestrels found themselves facing each other in their first match. The Kestrels raced to a 3 leg lead after some patchy scoring from both sides. Jak Doggatt retrieved one back for Evolution, their first point of the season and then Brett Badlove increasing the lead for the Kestrels. Doggatt showed he can play a bit by closing out on D14 and will be an asset to Evolution this term. Heath Hughes completed the match on D3 for both points for the Kestrels.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION CHALLENGE TROPHY
‘Smart Golf’ We are talking here about how to think your way around the golf course using simple common sense. Too easy? Here are just a few ways in which you can improve this part of your mental approach: Play the first tee shot in your head - When you are driving (carefully) to the course or before you leave the practise area, visualise and play the first tee shot in your mind over and over again because when your face this shot for real you will feel more confident and should see better results. Stick to your game plan - Before you commence play you should have a plan or strategy for each hole and stick to it irrespective of how you are playing, your score, how the opposition are playing or the state of the match. Do not turn one bad shot into two (or more) - Golf is a game or mistakes, you will make them, accept them and do not try miracle shots to recover, accept your punishment and get on with the game. Putting a good score together - When you find yourself in a position where you have a good score going do not get too defensive, trust your swing and stay aggressive. Use your shots - The handicapping system gives you shots because you need them so use them to the best of your ability and do not waste them by attacking pins tight to bunkers or hitting woods out of the rough to low index holes. Play the percentages - Do not attempt shots with a high risk of failure, simply get the ball back into play as safely as possible and get the best score that you can on the hole and get on with the rest of the game. Eliminate your disaster shots - Golf is not about how good your best shots are BUT is about how bad your bad shots are and so identify what these shots are and take lessons to eliminate them. Pay full attention - Each shot needs and deserves your full attention so do not play any shot unless you are ready to play the shot properly. Commit to the shot - Select the club that you feel is correct to play the shot, have no doubts about your selection, be positive and swing with confident controlled aggression. Take the positives from your round - No matter how badly you have played or scored on the day focus on something positive rather than negative from the round and take these with you to the next game as well as trying to work on the weaker parts of your game. You see it really is a simple and easy as that! We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. By Mick the Grip. The inaugural “Royal British Legion Challenge Trophy” was held at Vistabella Golf on Saturday 20th September. 55 Players took part, all keen to raise money for the 2014 Poppy Appeal. The event was an individual Stableford competition, and there were prizes for first second and third in three divisions, two nearest the pin prizes and eight overall prizes for the eight best scores on the day. The winners were as follows; Category 1: 1st Staff Hurlin, 44 pts. 2nd: Pat Coyne, 38 pts. 3rd Charley Rogers, 37 pts. Category 2: 1st Sheila Coyne, 38 pts. 2nd Merve Evans, 33 pts. 3rd Paul Hutchinson 33 pts. Category 3: 1st Eric Taylor, 40 pts. 2nd Elspeth Craig, 34 pts. 3rd Bernard Ball, 33 pts. Nearest the pins were won by Pat Coyne and Ian Ingledew. In the overall categories: 1st Staff Hurlin, 44 pts. 2nd Eric Taylor, 40 pts. 3rd Pat Coyne, 38 pts. 4th Sheila Coyne, 38 pts. 5th Charley
Rogers, 37 pts. 6th Roy Welburn, 36 pts. 7th Martin Fitzpatrick, 36 pts and 8th David Gill, 35 pts. The strongest golfer (propping the rest up) was Sid Avery. Sid won a golf cap signed by David Leadbetter, and we hope that when he wears it all those powerful thoughts from David will assist in improving his game. The success of a day like today depends on a lot of people. I would particularly like to thank Pablo Riestra for presenting Vistabella golf course in such fantastic condition, Mike Probert from Costa Blanca Green Fees for his assistance in the set up, help with the check in and the cards, and Phil Brigham of Torre Golf for supplying so many players for this event. In addition, the golf courses of Alto Real La Marquesa Vistabella Lorca and Poniente deserve thanks for providing green fees as prizes. Individual prizes were donated by Neil O’Donoghue, Merve Evans and Pablo Riestra. The end result was that the grand total of €711 was raised. My thanks to you all on behalf of the Royal British Legion.
Hub sports bar Golf Society Villamartin by Paul Durrant Recent inclement weather did not deter the Hub from their planned Texas Scramble at La Serena. A draw for partners was conducted the evening prior to the event at the Hub where some interesting pairings resulted. Richard Allen and Shaun Smith were probably the strongest pair and produced some decent golf with 11 pars and a birdie on the Par 4, 16th. It was good enough for the podium and prizes but only third place. Regular visitor AJ Mitchell enjoyed the company of Sharon Pearson and a couple of extra shots courtesy of the latter. The outcome was a modest 8 Pars mainly on the back 9 to elevate the couple into the prizes and second spot. Hull City supporter and no stranger to this column Dave Ackroyd teamed up with boating expert Vernon Cook. Their front 9 of six Pars, two bogeys and a nice birdie on the Par 3, 9th left them one over gross at the turn. Their form continued on the way back to the Club House with 7 more Pars, but an uncharacteristic double bogey, albeit on the difficult stroke index 1 Par 4, 12th, took the edge off an excellent round of 76 (4 over), for first place by one point 5 shots. All teams came in perfectly dry in warm sunshine despite surrounding storms.
The Hub´s next event is at Hacienda Del Alamo on Sunday 12th October, first tee 11 a.m. Guests are welcome and should register at the Hub by the 10th. The final event of the summer season will be at the Font de Llop on Sunday 26th October and once again guests are invited to register as soon as possible. Other Results PJ Rentacars N.T.P. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY - REPORT FOR W/E 3 OCT 14 By Mike Chapman The weather on Monday was rather indifferent and 6 teams set out to contest a 4 ball Texas competition but as the weather deteriorated 3 teams decided to seek the shelter of the 19th hole. The winners who must have been absolutely soaked by the time they finished were John and Carole Wheeler, Peter Radcliffe and Olga Douglas with a score of 60.4. On Wednesday it was the first round of the Club Medal Championship to determine the Club Champion (gross and net) in both the Ladies and Gents Divisions. The best 2 from 3 rounds count towards the overall total. Prizes on the day however are awarded to the first 3 positions in Categories 1 and 2. The only player to beat par was Phil Herrington
scoring a superb net 69. It was a particularly good day for Phil as he also had the only 2 in the 2's Club. The winners on the day were: Cat 1. 1st Phil Herrington 69 2nd Brian Green 72(c/b) 3rd Barry Holtham 72 Cat 2. 1st Angie Green 74 2nd Roger Tunstall 75 3rd Rod Doel 78 The guest prize went to Peter Radcliffe with a score of 77. On Friday the glorious weather we are used to returned and we played a 2 ball better ball. The winners with an excellent score of 46 pts were the pairing of Ken Meredith and Brian Green. In second place were Ron Phipps and Brian Humpheyson with a score 43 pts beating John Robertson and Barry Holtham on count back.

Continued from Page One Indeed Colin, who also won the competition in 2009, progressed through to the Men’s Single final where he met Frank Close of the Emerald Isle. Unfortunately that was where the wheels came off as Colin, having held the lead throughout, dropped away over the final 3 frames to lose to Frank 21-17. Although Frank almost threw the match away on the 15th end, where he turned a 3 shot advantage into a 1 shot deficit with his final bowl of the end, the newcomer stood firm to achieve his first major success in Spain, having only recently arrived onto the local bowling scene.

There was a similar tight battle in the Ladies Singles final contested by 2009 winner Anita Brown of San Miguel and Quesada’s recent arrival Jacqui Johnston, where the new girl let slip an 8-0 advantage. Anita clawed back to 9-9 before going on to win 21-17. Colin Lindgren and Keith Jones of San Luis held onto their Mens Pairs title beating Jim Mulloy, and Geoff Farrington of the Emerald Isle 22-19 while in the Ladies Pairs Avril Toozer and Sue Mohamet beat Lynn Greenland and Sheila Stead 19-14 in an all Greenlands affair. THE EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB. Valencian Championships. The Emerald Isle, along with Vistabella & Greenlands, have Hosted the Championships this year, the E.I. Also hosted the opening ceremony on the 19th sept. We can be very proud of the organisation and hard work by the committee to make this Championship a success, Two people in particular stand out, of course I mean Tony Capewell and Mel O'Dell, gentlemen you have worked wonders and we all SALUTE you. Supporters) to watch Frank Close's fantastic win against Colin Jackson, this was a superb match with both players showing us how the game should be played ( I would have paid to watch this game, but don't tell Frank) thanks to both of you, this now puts Frank into the Final. It seems to me that the " Emerald" is a great club to belong to, when players like Frank regularly play in the Roll ups, lots of us newer players are very proud to say (when asked) I play for the Emerald Isle ! More results next week. Quick note: On 24th Oct (Friday) Marion is hosting a B.B.Q. & Quiz at the E.I., 5-30 for 6pm, be there or Marion will get you, be warned. ESTRELLA DAMM CRIBBAGE By Ron Sheldon Week 4 on 29th September and at least the crib was calmer then the stormy weather. Even so, we still had two 7-2 results to brighten the evening, one of them elevating Ayliff’s Galea “A” to the top spot. They were away to Mike’s Izzys Peacocks who still haven’t had a win and for Galea, Lynda & Pat topped out with 3 wins while Mike and Mary zeroed for the home side. Keith’s Merlins from Ebony & Ivory were the other 7-2 winners at home to Alan’s Mr Smiths Robins who had Alan & Joe suffering without a win while Barbara & Ted maximised with 3 wins for Merlins. Dorothy’s Magpies moved up to 2nd place after their close win against Mick’s Lo Crispin whose top scorers were Mick & Carol with 2 wins while for the Magpies 2 pairs did the same. At Rojales Steakhouse Steve’s team gained a much needed win at home to Richard’s Ventura Ospreys even though Richard & Sid won all their 3 games, 2 pairs for the Steakhouse both won 2. My Ventura Falcons just missed out in a very close game against Brian’s E&I Jaguars who had 2 pairs with 2 wins each while Gill & myself fell flat without a win leaving our other 2 pairs with 2 wins each. At the Meson Galea, Brian’s “B” team just squeezed a win against Ron’s Nacho Voles whose pair of Ron & Norman were best with 2 wins while for Brian’s team 2 pairs had 2 wins each. Les’s Jays at Mr Smiths are still without a win but still won 2 of the last 3 legs with Dave & Stewart winning 2 games while Peter’s visiting Galleon team had Bruce & Harry lording it with 3 wins. Finally at Catorce in a reversed fixture La Siesta Sharks squeezed a tight win with new recruit Anne playing with Ken and securing 3 wins while for Catorce only Tony & Phil managed 2 wins. The second race day of the Sailing Association Mar Menor’s Autumn 2014 season witnessed some very close racing, especially between the boats of the same class. Despite the un-promising weather, crews of 11 boats, some 22 SAMM members, arrived to race but unfortunately disabled member Tony Jones and his crew could not launch their Martin when a wheel bearing collapsed on the launching trailer. The first race the two Laser 2000’s of the Shoestring Group, one sailed by Brian Murray the other by Tug Wilson/Vernon O’Byrne had a monumental battle throughout the race with Tug/Vernon finally winning the race just 2 seconds ahead of Brian. In the second race the two Lasers again battled hard but this time Brian was the victor finishing second overall and 38 seconds ahead of Tug/Vernon. At the same time, the two Sailfish 18’s of the Balaton Group were also having a fine tussle. Ernie Foster /Oscar Laird on Mistral gradually pulled ahead and were leading Robert Hudson/Terry Chapman in Sirocco right up half way through the last lap. However, picking up early on a favourable wind shift, Sirocco’s crew were able to claw back all of Mistrals advantage and the boats reached the last but one mark neck and neck. Robert/Terry managing to hold off Ernie/Oscar on the very last leg to cross the line 8 seconds ahead, placing 6th overall in the race. The race winner was Don Clarke in his Hartley 12.2. Next Race Day October 5th, registration 10am at the beach entrance to the CAR Centre, Los Najeros. Non-members welcome. For more information see the web site at www.sailingmarmenor.com

Another long away trip last Saturday, saw Torry visit the city of Valencia's other team. Although Valencia CF are world famous, Levante UD can also boast a La Liga side, but it was their B team that hosted Galiana's men in this latest division 3 encounter. Desperately wanting to make amends for the recent home defeat to local rivals Orihuela, Galiana made some brave team changes. Out went Carrasco and Cristian, to be replaced by fit again Steve and Borja. Levante started the brighter, and would have scored after only 5 mins, had it not been for a basic schoolboy miss. Torry started to get their act together, when following 3 corners in quick succession, a well worked move, involving Burguillos, Ruben then Steve, was fired just over by the latter. Alexis cleared off the line, as Levante once again threatened, but it was the visitors who went in front a minute before the interval. Superb control by Rafa Gomez, culminated in his assist to Cesar (who incidentally is sponsored in the match day programme
by yours truly hail Cesar!) being fired into the top corner of the net. The 2nd half resembled that of the siege of the Alamo, for Levante took the game by the scruff of the neck. Midway through, Vicente came to the rescue, executing a last ditch tackle which prevented a certain goal. So many efforts by the home side were just off target, and it looked only a matter of time before they would equalize. Alexis, Martin and Cesar were all booked, as it became a case of backs to the wall lads, with no prisoners being taken. Oscar made a breath taking save low down to his right, leaving Torry holding on for 3 points, in a game in which both keeper Oscar, and full back Vicente were outstanding. Next Sunday 12 October, Torry host Ontinyent at Vicente Garcia Stadium. Ko is scheduled for 6pm, but please check Torry websites for any changes (you just never know!!).
ALICANTE NOW READY FOR BLAST OFF
SUDOKU SOLUTION
BY KEVIN RENDALL American/Turkish entrant Team Alvimedica fired the opening salvo in the 2014/15 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race by winning the Alicante In-Port race on Saturday. Now, though, the action switches from the relative safety of Alicante bay where tactics and teamwork were paramount to the open sea where unseen dangers await virtually round the clock. Almost three years to the day that eventual winner Frenchman Frank Cammas and his crew aboard Groupama slipped away from the dockside, the 'Volvo' is back; the third time Alicante has hosted the grand departure. This year's event promises the closest action in the forty one year history of the race thanks to a one design boat, the Volvo Ocean 65. Thousands will throng the port area this Saturday, October the 11th, as Alicante bids farewell and wishes fair winds to the competing crews. Three weeks ago each of the seven yachts took part in 'leg 0', a shake down test of both men and machines during which, on a sprint from Alicante to Palma de Mallorca and back, various obligatory safety drills and exercises were performed to satisfy stringent race participation rules. Danish team Vestas Wind “won” leg 0 by just a handful of seconds from Team Brunel with all female crew SCA finishing a creditable fifth. That, though, is as nothing compared to what awaits. Ensuring these five million pound racing yachts perform at the optimum, a pre-requisite if you harbour any hopes of winning the thing, is exhausting. Wind changes entail sail changes which, in turn, equate to hard physical labour and the need to shift heavy, frequently wet, sails
from one side of the boat to the other. Work such as this is often carried out whilst sleep deprived, (more in a moment), and soaking wet. High tech the VO65's may well be but they don't sail themselves which means someone has to be on deck 24/7, in whatever conditions, to keep the boat going, at speed, in the right direction. The crews all operate a watch system of four hours sleeping, four hours on standby and four hours on deck for the duration of each leg, some of which last for two weeks or more. This, don't forget, is also done on meagre food rations and minimal changes of clothing. At the corresponding stage of the last race, disaster struck British captain Ian Walker's Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing boat suffered a broken mast two hours into the opening leg from Alicante to Cape Town, and that on a supposedly innocuous stage. In the Volvo Ocean Race it's probably wise not to be surprised by the unexpected. Drama, danger, despair and, eventually, delight are all guaranteed in the Volvo. Not, though, in equal measure. Rather them than me ! The Volvo Ocean Race by numbers: 7 teams, 9 crew members each, 38,739 nautical miles total race distance, 11 ports, 10 In-Port races, 20 days at sea on the longest leg, 9 months and 1 “pit stop” (in The Hague next June). The Volvo Ocean Race Teams: MAPFRE (Spain), Team Vestas Wind (Denmark), Team SCA (Sweden), Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, Team Brunel (The Netherlands), Team Alvimedica (Turkey/U.S.), Dongfeng Race Team (China).
