TEAM BRUNEL LEADS FLEET OUT OF ALICANTE
The seven-strong fleet of the 12th Volvo Ocean Race raced out of Alicante on Saturday for the punishing first leg to Cape Town with rains and strong winds forecast to greet them in the opening eight hours. Team Brunel took the honours after the fleet bade farewell to a memorable Alicante nineday stopover before heading out to the Mediterranean, through the Straits of Gibraltar and then into the Atlantic during the first week of a nine-month, 38,739-mile marathon. Skippered by Bouwe
Bekking, the Dutch boat headed the seven-strong fleet out of the Spanish coastal city which hosts the Race HQ and has given the 66 sailors competing in Leg 1 an incredible send-off with tens of thousands visiting the Race Village every day. They were hotly pursued by both Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and MAPFRE. Memories of the last “salida” (departure) from Alicante three years ago will still be fresh for many – Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Team Sanya were forced to limp back to shore with crippling damage within 24 hours after an opening night storm in the Med wrought early havoc. There’s no such carnage predicted this time but Race meteorologist Gonzalo Infante suggested it will be “messy” from about 2200 local time (2000 UTC) on the first leg when rains are likely to drench the fleet and winds could pick up to around 20 knots. Traditionally, boats who have won Leg 1 have gone on to win the entire race but Groupama bucked that trend in 2011-12 when they finished last of only three boats who managed to complete the 6,487 miles to Cape Town. The French team, led by Franck Cammas, took time to get into their stride but eventually emerged as deserved winners by the time the fleet reached their home port of Lorient, the penultimate stopover. Another close race is predicted again for 2014-15, especially with the new one-design Volvo Ocean 65 levelling the playing field, but for the 50,000 or so who packed the Alicante Race Village to wave the fleet on their way, the event has already proved a winner. Indeed the build up to the Volvo Ocean Race proved so popular that a record number of visitors, almost 110,000, were admitted to the Race Village in its first four days of opening, where they were able to explore and to enjoy the more than two hundred free activities available. And there were also beneficial effects from the race to the city’s hoteliers with the Provincial
Monday, 13th October, 2014 Hotel Association (APHA) estimating that there was a hotel occupancy rate of more than 90% during the weekend, with an improved rate of around eighty percent during the remainder of the following week. And the good news for the city didn’t end there, with the announcement by the CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race, Knut Frostad, on Saturday that the next edition of the race, which will take place in 2017-18, will also be held in Alicante. Planning is already underway, he said, and well advanced, and he is confident that it will probably attract even more boats to the race. Asked about the possibility of having more yachts in the future, Frostad said that new sponsors have already confirmed they will begin campaigning, but declined to give details. "In any case there will certainly be more than 9 or 10 boats," he said. Together with Hakan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars, and Olof Persson, President of AB Volvo and CEO of Volvo Group, Frostad said how the organization used the 'knowhow' of the Volvo Group for producing and introducing the monotype concept into the race. He said that there was also a great deal of surprise when he announced a number of changes similar to Formula 1, for the fleet that will compete in 2017-18. Both Samuelsson and Persson have confirmed that there will be a change to a one-design fleet, and that the concept of a shared service center will be supported

BELIEVE ME - JOSE REALLY CAN DO IT !
I am writing in order to let people know about an experience that my husband and I had recently. We are a retired English couple and have lived in La
Marina for 8 years now. Like many other Brits who have been buying over the last 9 years we have paid exorbitant prices for our homes that now sell for much less. Today, due to
the devaluation of the Pound compared to 9 years ago, our pensions have gone down and our purchasing power is less. After 9 years, a home needs certain maintenance and more so if it was already a re-sale. My husband and I wanted to make a few alterations to our villa such as putting up new awnings and closing in the front terrace to make a conservatory. For us it was very important to engage a company that was fully legal and with a good reputation, but above all we were looking for a human touch that would give us confidence in the firm. After requesting several quotes, we asked a neighbour who had recently had some awnings installed and she told us that they had all been done by "José the window grille man". She said that José was a very honest man and legally registered and that any time she needed something José would fix it whether it be an awning, a security grille, electric wáter heater, a window, etc. Trusting in his work and in my neighbour´s recommendation I called José, who speaks perfect English. José, from the first
moment gave us confidence that he would do the job and offered us money saving ideas. In two days he presented the estimate and explained step by step the installation process for the awnings and the glass curtains for the front terrace. His prices were competitive but the most important thing was the quality of his workmanship, and we had seen the work he had carried out at my neighbour´s house which was of a much higher standard than we had seen the previous week at a local market. For us the quality and product guarantee was very important as we did not want to pay twice as much only to get something infe-
rior. Following the installation of the awnings and glass curtains and seeing how professional it all was we wanted to share this information with our fellow expats and publicly give our thanks to José. After hearing about so many bogus companies and cowboy builders we would like to recommended this professional service and offer you the contact details: Jose Miguel Loyzaga Tel number 679 48 34 10 E-mail: grillsjose@gmail.com Yours John and Sheila Cresswell

EASY MONTHLY PAYMENTS In their budget for 2015 election year, the Spanish national government is to offer up to one billion euro in loans to struggling town halls, in order for them to settle debts related to healthcare, schools and other essential services. The plan aims to strengthen Spain's recovery after it emerged from recession in mid-2013 and prevent further financial turbulence.
BIG BROTHER
This year Torrevieja has been chosen to host the Launch of The Royal British Legion’s main fundraiser in Eastern Spain the annual Poppy Appeal. The launch will take place along the seafront in the Port Area which will start with a parade from the Paseo Juan Aparicio at 11am. The parade will be led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, followed by Standards of the Royal British Legion and other Service Associations. Also marching will be a number of Chelsea Pensioners who have flown out especially for the occasion as well as members of

Everyone is invited to attend the event whether or not a member of The Royal British Legion. The Paseo Juan Aparicio is situated at the start of the Torrevieja Pier (aka Dique de Levante Breakwater).
POLICE PROTEST OUTSIDE COURTHOUSE About fifty local police, together with support and cleaning staff, protested outside the gates of the Torrevieja Courthouse on Monday morning during the trial of six local officers and three janitors who appeared as defendants, charged for offences which included showing their naked torso’s during earlier protests which took place outside the Town Hall earlier in the year. However the hearing had to be postponed because of technical difficulties encountered by prosecution councilors with a video machine. The hearing was attended by Police Inspector Manuel Lopez, José Manuel Dolon, Municipal spokesman for Los Verdes and Alejandro Esteban, Secretary of the Alternativa Popular.
Applause broke out at the door of the courthouse from some members of the trade unions CCOO and Sipol when the adjournment was announced. . Representing the CCOO, local police officer Juan Antonio Moya, said the rally was held in support of his colleagues and that the whole thing was "nothing more than a witch hunt and persecution and that the officers were doing nothing more than “standing up for their rights.” Moya said that there had been no willingness to negotiate by City officials, which is all that his members ask for. They were asking for nothing that was illegal. One example of their claims was a seven day rest period following seven continuous days of duty, which is a shift pattern already being satisfactorily operated by the coastguard service He said that until their claims were acknowledged his members would resume their monthly protests to coincide with the conclusion of the council plenary sessions, starting this month.
A group of Russian inspectors, accompanied by Spanish observers for security reasons, have been flying over Spain in an observation aircraft this week, taking photographs as part of the Russian National Centre for Reducing Nuclear Threat initiative under the Open Skies agreement.
BAR ASSOCIATION SPONSORS PLANNING SEMINAR HELD The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, together with the Dean of the Bar Association of Orihuela, Almarcha Manuel Marcos, opened the one day Seminar on the new Valencia Town Planning Legislation, LOTUP, on Tuesday. The seminar was held in the Palacio de la Música and was attended by over a hundred lawyers and businessmen operating in the real estate and tourism sectors The mayor said how grateful he was to the Bar Association for holding the conference in Torrevieja, a town that is quickly emerging throughout Spain as one of the most important in the field of real estate development. He said that the seminar would be of great interest and praised the Association on the quality of speaker, including many public administration professionals that they were able to bring in to explain the new law and clarify any doubts that planners might have.

TOWN HALL ACCESS SET FOR MODERNISATION It has been a year in the waiting but work is finally about to start on modernising the pedestrian access around the town hall. The ramped access into and out of the building will be improved at the rear entrance door, with the pavement being levelled and additional bicycle parking being provided to try to prevent cyclists from chaining their bikes to the lampposts which then blocks the access for wheelchair users. Mercadona have donated a piece of their land, where part of a perimeter wall will now be removed to allow for a pavement to be created following a natural route from the roundabout towards the town hall. The work has taken so long to start as the plans and financial structure had to be completed before hand. Meanwhile, final draft plans have now been completed for the traffic access and egress at the La Zenia roundabout, which will be submitted to the ministry in Alicante. Footpaths will also be created on parts of this structure, as well as making two of the access roads into one-way routes, favourable to their closure as had been a previous threat.
According to the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, as former mayor, Mónica Lorente, said that the Alicante government had approved a grant to pay for this work, the Orihuela council hope that Alicante will foot the 50,000 euro bill, half of which will go towards job creation, as per the terms of the grant award, thus giving some unemployed people at least some work whilst the project is carried out. However, as there was some confusion as to where the money from Alicante could be spent in the past, as Lorente wanted to share it between two projects, which, according to the town hall was not possible under the guidelines presented by Alicante, should the money not be available then the work can be funded locally. The town hall of Orihuela has also obtained another quote for the cliff retaining work needed at Cala Capitan. Once the most appropriate quote has been approved, work can begin on securing that crumbling cliff, and repairing the walkway underneath, after natural erosion caused rocks to slip and fall during the summer. Permission from the Alicante coastal department has already been obtained, and so there should be no additional delays to that work.

ORIHUELA BUSINESSMAN SHORTLISTED FOR AWARD Orihuela based businessman Thomas Wolfang Herteux, the man behind such operations as the Orihuela Costa´s chiringuitos, the Fresco fast food chain and luxury restaurant The Glass House, has been nominated for the prestigious award of young business person of the year. The JOVEMPA organization, the Federation of Young Entrepreneurs of the Province of Alicante, is behind the awards, the winner of which will be announced in Alicante on the 17th of October, in association with the provincial government. In the ceremony, the twentieth time it has taken place, 14 nominations were shortlisted down to 7 finalists, each one from a different area in the province, and from very different business backgrounds, including new technologies and internet marketing, hospitality, renewable energy, robotics, real estate, supplies and software development.
SPEEDING UP LOCAL BUREAUCRACY If you have been unfortunate to have been caught up in a longer than usual queue at the Orihuela Costa town hall recently, you are likely to have been further delayed by the fact that the internet connection in the building has been running particularly slowly. As most of the administrative files are not stored on local computers but require an internet connection for the local officials to access them, this had caused considerable backlogs. However, the good news is that the company that supplies the internet connection to the town hall has finally accepted that there was indeed a fault, and has set about rectifying the problem this week. Therefore, normal service can now resume.

LOCAL EMPLOYMENT The Services Sector lost a total of 844 employment contracts in the Vega Baja in September, the final month of the holiday season, although it was partly offset by 222 new industry and 233 construction contracts. Torrevieja, with 426 contract terminations, heads the September unemployment ranking ahead of Pilar de la Horadada, with 133 more people out of work. On the plus side there have been 91 new job creations in Callosa de Segura and 39 in Catral while Orihuela ended September with 77 more jobs.

BLACKPOOL AIRPORT CLOSURE CONFIRMED
The current owners of Blackpool Airport, Balfour Beaty, have confirmed in a statement today that the airport will close, after they failed to find a buyer for the loss-making transport terminal.
The official statement read, “We regret to announce that no agreement has been reached to secure the future of operations at Blackpool Airport. The airport operation has been making a loss for a number of years and unfortunately there is no option for the company other than to close. “This is a very sad day for the airport which has a proud aviation history and a loyal, appreciative customer following. We would like to thank all our dedicated staff who have delivered exceptional service to passengers for many years. “The airport will remain open to the public until 15 October 2014 and we will endeavour to maintain operations as normal until this date, after which time commercial flights will cease. “While the sales process announced at the end of August was a final attempt to secure the future of the airport, the airport's management had spent many months prior to this announcement approaching organisations with a potential interest in the airport in an attempt to find a buyer. “Work is currently underway with the independent aviation businesses and tenants at the airport to understand if their operations can continue in the future. Working in partnership with the local
authorities, regeneration plans are also being developed which will be designed to create future employment and sustainable economic development opportunities for Blackpool and the Fylde Coast. Cllr John Jones, Blackpool Council’s cab-
inet member for highways and transport, said: “This is a very sad day for Blackpool, Blackpool Airport and, most importantly, the staff who work there. “My thoughts are with all of those who are affected by this announcement, both directly and indirectly. “We will, of course, offer any help we can to them. “This does not necessarily mean the end of the line for aviation at Squires Gate and we are aware that interest remains in the airfield and the site. “As a passenger-led airport it has lost money throughout its tenure, has not delivered inbound tourism and the jobs growth one would expect for the size of the site and neither Balfour Beatty or any other company appears to be able or minded to save it on that basis. “The site undoubtedly does, however, have significant potential to deliver quality jobs, growth and, equally importantly, profit as a commercial airfield and helipad as other similar ventures around the country have. “We continue to work and try to make that possible and will continue to be as open and frank as we can with the public as we have from the outset.

BENIDORM RECORDS MORE OVERNIGHT STAYS THAN MADRID During the month of August, Benidorm came third nationwide with the most overnight stays in the country, finishing behind only Barcelona (1.9 million) and the Balearic Islands, with 1.5 million. In 4th place came the capital, Madrid, with 1.2 million. However, in the 2014 cumulative calculations, Benidorm actually lies fourth in the ranking with 7.3 million, behind Barcelona, 11.8 million, Madrid, 10.6 and San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Las Palmas) which has recorded 7.4 million stays. During the month of August, Benidorm was visited by 239,351 travelers, a somewhat lower figure than in the same month of 2013, when 239,519 tourists visited the resort. In the year to the beginning of September, however, Benidorm was visited by 1.3 million tourists, up by 1 percent from 2013. Hosbec also reported that the average daily spend (rate ADV) and revenue per room (RevPAR) available in Benidorm was the highest in the Valencia region, with 86.1 and 79.9 euros respectively, higher than 2013 when the figures were to 80.8 and 72.8 euros respectively. One further area where the resort did particularly well was in the number of visitors using local campsites, 157,918, which put the city 11th in the country behind L'Estartit (Girona) with 365,940. The city had an average occupancy of 73.6% of their plots recording 15% of all overnight stays in campsites in the Valencian Community.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO MALAGA AIRPORT INCIDENT
An investigation was confirmed this week after two passenger jets, a Ryanair Boeing 737 flying from Leeds, and a Jet2.com Boeing 737 heading to Glasgow, were involved in a near miss at Málaga airport on September the 17th. The report states that the Ryanair plane was landing on the same runway as the Jet2.com aircraft was taking off, resulting in the Ryanair aborting the landing and flying over the top of the Jet2.com with around 400 to 500 vertical feet separation. The accident investigation report issued on the 3rd of October reports that “the operations performed by each aircraft were hampered by being carried on the same runway heading” and a “loss of sep-

aration occurred”, continuing to explain that a full investigation has been launched. The Ryanair jet landed safely some 18 minutes after the incident, whereas the Jet2.com aircraft continued without further incident. Meanwhile, on Monday, a further investigation was reported to have been launched into an incident involving an Easyjet Airbus A319 on the 21st of September, in which a member of cabin crew suffered a broken wrist. The flight from Liverpool to Madrid was descending towards the Spanish capital when it suffered an “unexpected jolt”, resulting in the flight attendant suffering the injury which led to her being taken to hospital upon arrival at Madrid.
NO FIGHTERS THANKS Deliveries of the Eurofighter Typhoon to Spain, as well as Germany and Italy, have been halted, after the discovery of a manufacturing fault on the rear fuselage of the aircraft. Britain, the fourth nation involved in the program, is continuing to accept aircraft, as a Ministry of Defence spokesman said operation of the combat jet is unaffected by the problem. The issue is expected to be resolved “soon”, once “negotiations relating to commercial factors” are concluded.
CHINESE BOOST Mariano Rajoy, and the Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang, have signed a deal worth around 3 million euro, aimed at boosting bilateral business cooperation. Li Keqiang said that “Chinese companies are highly encouraged to invest in Spain”, as the Chinese government attaches great importance to its relations, whilst urging continual expansion of bilateral trade to accelerate growth. He also said that the two countries should strengthen cooperation in areas such as energy, finance, biological medicine and the aerospace industry.

RUSSIANS MONOPOLIZE LUXURY PROPERTY MARKET Russian buyers are now the primary target for developers of luxury properties in their quest for foreign clients. The reason is quite simple: they are the nation who, on average, spend more money when buying a luxury home in Valencia, specifically, 918 700 EUR, this is despite the political crisis between Russia and the European Union following the conflict with Ukraine. And according to data provided by the General Council of Notaries, buyers from the former Soviet Union now lead the ranking of investments in real estate for property of over 500,000 euros in three Spanish provinces. The latest figures available, based on the first half of this year, indicate that wealthy foreigners spent 161 million euros on acquiring luxury homes in the Community (214 purchases), 10% more than during the same period last year. Sources seem to indicate that those wishing to purchase luxury properties in Spain feel that the time is now right to make their investment as, with the worst of the crisis now behind us, you get the feeling that transactions are safe and profitable. The same sources added that the good sales figures "have little impact on the 'granting of residence permits to foreigners who spend more than half a million euros on investment property. Valencia is actually the third largest market for Russian clients in Spain with 59 transactions completed during the first 6 months of 2014 showing a total investment of 54 million euros. However, in the two Provinces out in front, Catalonia has sold 137 homes to Russiana, at an average price of 1,136 million euros, while in Andalusia there have been 94 properties, costing 98 million at an average price of 933,000 euros. After Valencia in 3rd position, the Canary Islands come next. The figures show that every Russian investor who buys a house worth more than 500,000 euros in Spain actually spends EUR 1.065 million
in the remainder of the country whilst in Valencia the spend averages out at 918,000 EUR with 18% of the national total. The faithful and traditional British market, which has historically been the major customer of the autonomy in this type of transaction, now ranks second, with 25 purchases and an average spend per property of about 714,000 euros. It would seem that the reason why the British market has declined is that they are changing their preferences to other regions. Of 397 luxury purchases made by British buyers in Spain only 6% are made within the Valencian Community. Norwegians, Belgians, Germans and the French complete the picture of customers of this elite market in the Community. But local developers still rely on the British market and a delegation of Provia, the Alicante Promoters Association, has recently moved to London to negotiate agreements with British estate agents in the sale of property in the Alicante region.
FABRA ANNOUNCES 375 MILLION EUROS FOR NEW JOBS The President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Alberto Fabra, announced last week that the Valencian Government will allocate 375 million euros over the next three years to boost training plans and job creation aimed at particular groups such as young people under 25 years of age, the long-term unemployed and people who have special difficulties in finding employment. In a ceremony held on Tuesday at the Elche Business Park, Fabra presented the project entitled 'Strategy Employs' stating that Valencia will be able to create 200,000 new jobs under this initiative by 2016. The President announced that the Regional Government Budget next year amounts to 170 million euros which will be used to start boosting the actions needed to implement the plan 'Strategy Use'. In the fol-
lowing year the budget will increase by 5 million euro to 175 million. Fabra predicted that this year will end with the creation of 50,000 new jobs and that in 2015 and 2016 respectively the figure will be increased by 75,000 new jobs each year. "The data has now begun to generate optimism within the Valencian society," he said. "We are second nationwide in terms of reduced unemployment and the second also in job creation, which shows how all of our businesspeople are working together in a true entrepreneurial spirit." Fabra also stressed that Valencia is currently running third nationwide in terms of growth at 1.3 per cent of GDP and next year it is forecast to be second with GDP growing at 2.4 percent.

LEADER POLICE MERIT AWARD CAUSES CONTROVERSY ADVERTISING HOTLINE
The award given by the Spanish government in recognition of policing has not only sparked controversy this year, but a court case to try to reverse the decision.
The Gold Medal of Police Merit has been awarded by the Interior Ministry to a religious statue of the Most Holy Mary of Love, “for sharing police values such as dedication, caring, solidarity and sacrifice.” This is not the first time an award has been given to an inanimate, though iconic object, as it has become something of a tradition. However, this year, supporters of a secular state are taking action to not only claim back the award, but to prevent it from being attached to a religious figure in the future. A court case has been filed with the spokesperson for a national group, Jorge García González, calling for limits to how the catholic religion is represented in Spain, with an online petition already underway to ensure that the award is given to somebody who not only serves the population by policing the country, but also somebody who actually exists.
NATIONAL POLICE OFFICERS ARRESTED IN MURDER CASE Six officers from the National Police have been arrested in Cartagena in connection with the discovery of the body of a man in Cartagena in March. The body of the man was discovered floating in the water in a cove not far from Cartagena, with an examination revealing he had suffered violence prior to death. The family of the man reported him missing on the 13th of March, saying that he had left the home address two days earlier and had not been heard from since. His body was discovered a few days later at Cala Cortina. A statement from the Directorate General of Police reveals that the arrests of the six National Police officers are under an open investigation into the disappearance and subsequent discovery of the body of a male, with clear evidence of violence ante mortem. Officers from both the National and Judicial police are investigating the facts, whilst court number 4 of Cartagena has issued a secrecy notice on the proceedings.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
EXPAT VOICE My weekly blog ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ was initially intended as a brief follow up to my novel ‘Letters from the Atlantic’, which were published in a local newspaper. This weekly series has since appeared in magazines, newspapers and blogs in many countries across the world, and I have been surprised and heartened by the enthusiastic response that I have received from established expats, as well as from those considering ‘living their dream’ in a country of their own choosing. After the first series of ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ was published, I began to receive requests from many readers who, for various reasons, had missed a specific article, asking if I could get a back copy of the newspaper or magazine for them. Eventually, it was suggested that I should publish the entire series of blogs for the year in one volume. That was ten years ago! I am now pleased to be able to publish the latest in the series - this time called ‘Expat Voice’. I chose the title ‘Expat Voice’ since many of the incidents that are raised in the book arose from emails, letters and conversations with expats from a number of countries, as well as from my own experiences. We all have our individual tales to tell, and I am always impressed by the enthusiasm and (mostly!) good humour that expats demonstrate when dealing with both challenges and amusing incidents in their new lives. This book is intended to be an echo of those voices, which I hope will prove to be of both help and inspiration to others. Looking at some of the early ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’, I am reminded of the huge enthusiasm that affects us all when we embark
upon our new adventure. A new country, new customs and traditions, as well as often a new language, all add to the thrill of escaping from the country of our birth. However, as time and experience take over, most of us have to deal with new challenges in life, which we may not have originally envisaged. ‘Expat Voice’ attempts to deal with some of the challenges faced by expats following the World recession, which has left many without jobs, failed relationships and repossessed homes. For many, it has not been a wonderful experience, but I am a firm believer that, over time, such difficulties make us stronger if approached in a positive and realistic manner. I know of many expats who appear to have ‘failed’, but have ‘bounced back’ stronger and more resilient to the challenges that life throws at us all from time to time. Unusually, in this book, I have tried to deal with other, more serious, issues that many expats have asked me to write about. Often taboo subjects, such as dealing with serious illness, death and wills have been raised in ‘Expat Voice’. Despite my original anxiety, it is a relief to see that pages dealing with ‘Death’ and ‘Wills’ on the ‘Expat Survival’ website have received the most number of hits from readers this year, so I guess these articles have served a useful purpose for some; I hope so. Life for an expat from any country, be it for reasons of work, retirement, or just following a spirit of adventure, is not always as easy as it may sound. A new life in the sun is often frustrated by having to deal with personal and family crises, health issues, language difficulties, confusing bureaucracy and cultural differences. This is all the stuff of expat adventures, which is part of the deal that we signed up for. The wise and seasoned expat eventually learns to accept and cope with a range of issues, which is part of our rich kaleidoscope of experiences. Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way. If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). Available as paperback, Kindle and iBooks. iPhone/iPad and Android Apps: ExpatInfo, CanaryIsle and CanaryGay now available. © Barrie Mahoney
We have a copy of Barrie’s latest book, Expat Voice, to give away to the first person who answers the question: How long ago did Barrie publish his first series of blogs? Answers by email to: office@theleader.info Name of the winner will be published next week.

SARAH’S BLOG ON TOGS
As the weather begins to cool over the next few weeks ... here is some useful information regarding duvets! Which tog rating for which season ?
Tog ratings tell you how warm a duvet (also known as a continental quilt or just quilt) will be and the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet will be. Please don't underestimate the importance of the right bedding for the time of year. The correct weight duvet will keep you at just the right temperature so you'll enjoy deep, restorative sleep every night. If you are too hot or too cold in bed then your sleep will be disturbed and you won't wake up ready to face the day. Duvets come in a wide range of tog ratings so you can choose one to suit your
sleep and comfort needs. Tog ratings are based on the duvet's ability to trap warm air or thermal insulation ability. Natural duvets have better thermal properties than hollowfibre or synthetic duvets and therefore need less filling to be able to achieve the same level of warmth. Children may suit a 10.5 to duvet. This best way to help your child be comfortable and regulate their temperature, is to choose a lower tog duvet for them and then leave a blanket or throw folded across the bottom of the bed. This way they can easily pull it up for extra warmth when they feel they need it. Lightweight Summer duvet 4.5 tog Warm Spring/Autumn duvet 9 – 10.5 tog Toasty Winter duvet 13.5 – 15 tog An All Seasons duvet offers great flexibility. They consist of two separate duvets – a lightweight 4.5 tog for summer and a warmer 9 tog for spring and autumn. During winter, you simply put the two duvets together for a toasty 13.5 tog duvet.
Which duvet filling is right for you and your family?
An All Seasons duvet consisting of two separate duvets offers great flexibility
Anti – Allergy/ Hollowfibre Duvets Allergies are becoming more frequent and can have an adverse effect on health. It has been established that 25% of all allergies and 50% of all asthmatic conditions are directly attributa-
ble to allergens of the house dustmite, which are particularly found in beds and bedding. If you or someone within the family suffers from allergies, it is important to choose a duvet with a non-allergenic hollowfibre filling. Natural feather and down duvets contain natural dust allergens and so should be avoided by allergy sufferers. Hollowfibre duvets can also be easily washed at 60°C, which kills dust mites. Some Anti-Allergy duvet fillings are also treated with antimicrobial and antibacterial protection to minimise allergic reactions to dust mites. This safe and durable anti-allergy protection is permanently fixed to our fibres and gives long lasting protection, even after frequent washing. Hollowfibre duvets are more practical and are a great choice if you know that you will need to wash you duvet regularly. They can be washed in a large capacity machine at up to 60 C. Natural Fillings - Duvets with natural fillings are soft, comfortable and highly resistant and they can last longer than those with synthetic fillings. Feather and down duvets vary in quality depending on the type of bird that the filling comes from. Down clusters from geese are the most luxurious because they are bigger and they trap air and create a light, warm and comfortable duvet. Duck feather and down duvets are heavier than goose down and these options are hard wearing. Natural filled duvets should be professionally laundered, because they need to be thoroughly dried and this can be difficult to achieve at home. For more information contact Sarah at Sarah's Curtain & Bedding Store, CC Los Dolses, Villamartin. SSSSSSSCARY A poisonous cobra has been found wandering the streets of Seville, after it escaped from an illegal terrarium located in a residential home. The owner, a 28 year old man, has been arrested and charged with a criminal offence, as the animal could have caused injury to members of the public and animals. Officers from the Guardia Civil who searched the man´s home also found two pythons stuffed into plastic boxes.
SNEAKY COP A senior officer of the Guardia Civil is being investigated under suspicion of being caught speeding, then asking a friend to claim to being the driver to avoid losing license points and a potential risk to his career. The incident happened some six months ago, with the details only just coming to light, when the Mercedes E320 was caught by a roadside radar travelling at 179 kilometres per hour in a 90 zone. The allegation is not only that the officer was driving and then tried to blame the vehicle owner, but he also tried to blame another motorist for the offence.

JAGUAR’S NEW XE HITS THE STREETS By Nick Ireland
The Jaguar XE was launched in the UK on Thursday October 2nd 2014 and at first glance it looks to redefine the concept of the sports saloon and will be the driver’s car in its class. Its lightweight construction, streamlined styling, luxurious interior and outstanding ride and handling are testament to company founder Sir William Lyons’ vision: ‘The car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive’.
The rear-drive XE is the only vehicle in its class to use an aluminiumintensive monocoque. This extremely robust yet light structure, together with double wishbone front suspension and an Integral Link rear axle, is fundamental to the XE’s innovative benchmark vehicle dynamics. Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in aluminium structure engineering enables exceptional fuel consumption and emissions figures: with the new Ingenium diesel engines, the XE can achieve 75mpg– the most efficient Jaguar ever. Powered by the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine from the acclaimed Jaguar F-TYPE, the XE S is capable of 060mph in just 4.9 seconds. The cabin offers outstanding levels of comfort and spaciousness. Exquisite materials and finishes combined with Jaguar craftsmanship make this a class-beating interior that’s unlike anything else in the segment. Jaguar’s new InControl infotainment system takes centre stage: its innovative 8-inch touchscreen brings fast, intuitive access to all features and functions – and iOS and Android smartphone apps. The XE has some of the most advanced driver assistance systems available. All Surface Progress Control (ASPC), developed through decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road traction systems, can electronically gain traction in seconds and is ideal for use on low-grip surfaces, such as snow-covered roads. Laser projection technology enables the XE’s optional head-up display (HUD) to generate sharp, high-contrast colour graphics (such as vehicle speed and navigation) from a module smaller and almost a third lighter than existing systems, retaining clarity even in direct sunlight. A forward facing stereo camera is mounted behind the front windscreen to give the XE a 3D view of the road ahead: this highly accurate data is used for functions including autonomous emergency braking and a lane departure warning system. The XE is the stiffest, most aerodynamic Jaguar saloon car ever built. It is also the first Jaguar to be equipped with electric power steering, tuned to provide exceptional responsiveness and feel but with lower energy consumption than hydraulic systems. The XE also offers the lowest cost of ownership and most environmentally sustainable credentials of all Jaguar models.

WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED? Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.
When you discover you’ve been burgled As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a breakin or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim. Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call.
Peace-of-mind with Linea Directa We understand that your peace-of-mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home.
Hold-up outside the home In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documentsare quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa

A WARM WELCOME AND DELICIOUS FARE AT CABO ROIG’S BLUE BOAR
ig isn’t always best. A testimony that all too often is very true. A statement that you will also find authentic next time you care to visit the Blue Boar, a small, family run bar and eatery in Cabo Roig. “Being a small bar and restaurant offers many advantages,” says owner Mark. “We know all of our customers personally and more importantly they know us. We get to know their likes and their dislikes which allows us to better meet their needs. We can provide them with a much improved service that they would find hard to get elsewhere.” The Blue Boar is a family friendly pub, with a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and it has quickly become a favorite place for the many residents who want, for the most part, simply to mix with their own and get away from the hustle and bustle on the Mediterranean side of ‘The Strip’. “We do have holidaymakers visiting the bar” said Mark, “but it’s usually those who stumble across us accidentally. Not surprisingly most of them quickly find out just how friendly we are and many decide to stay. In fact they often say that a trip to The Blue Boar has them feeling like a local, if only for a few hours”. And the emphasis is quite clearly on the locals. “I’ve always liked the idea of a local bar for local people” Mark continued, “they’re the ones who see you through the winter months, so we obviously try to repay their support by remaining loyal”. In terms of facilities, we cater for all our customers needs. We have a fine selection of beers, wines and spirits and we serve a good range of pub grub, traditional English Food, all, wherever possible, sourced

Mark runs the Blue Boar bar and restaurant alongside wife Bennie and daughters Mikaela and Mandie, so it really is a proper family affair, wide screen TV’s showing all Sky Sports, good pub grub with huge portions to fill the hungriest of tums. Good value, friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere. And just for added value the cost of a spirit and mixer beats just about everybody around at only 3 euro. COLUMBUS DEPARTURE POINT DISCOVERED
rcheologists digging in the Huelva town of La Fontanilla de Palos believe they have found the exact location where Christopher Columbus set sail for the New World in 1492. The excavations have been taking place for two months at the site and this latest development is being hailed as one of the most important and significant discoveries relating to the history of the day. Enrique Martínez Ituño, originally from Argentina, spoke of finding the historic port in 1908, although it wasn´t until 1992 that progress was actually made. Now, the archeological team, led by Juan Manuel Campos, believes that the long hidden piece of this historic jigsaw has finally been revealed. The area under investigation at La Fontanilla de Palos is thought to compose of four different key areas, including the shipyard, of which there is no archaeological trace, and the fountain itself, along with other elements being uncovered.
A
Those latter two elements included a pottery and a public area, which collectively reveal the exact location of the port where Columbus set sail. Described as a “natural harbour”, the physical characteristics of the port area contradicts what many believe should have been the chosen location for a ship such as the Santa Maria, but the deep waters and protection from both wind and currents makes it ideal, according to the experts. The archaeologists have already found seven pottery furnaces, a “unique” discovery in Spain, as well as ceramics, bricks, tiles and other artefacts. Within the “Alota”, they have discovered storage rooms and a tavern, essential to the working of any harbour, where sailors could prepare for their long journey ahead. With thousands of pieces of data being collated, the importance of protecting the discovery is paramount, as this is a site that led to the discovery of the modern world, and was the “nerve centre” of one of the most important feats of the day, the discovery of America.

CORN ON THE VOD-KA
A student of agricultural engineering in Elche has discovered a new way of manufacturing Vodka, from corn. Javier Juárez López , a student at the Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH) de Elche, concludes in his report that that the use of maize products for making vodka could be an important source of income for producers the area, who currently allocate maize to animal feed. As one of the many principle crops of the Vega Baja, supply has been outgrowing demand. By finding new, important ways of using the products can help to generate income for the growers who may otherwise be struggling.

A number of schools in Washington, USA, have taken the decision to remove and ban swings from their playgrounds, on account of 200,000 American kids being treated in emergency rooms for swingrelated injuries, mostly walking in front or behind. A spokesperson said, “Swings have been determined to be the most unsafe of all the playground equipment”, although with their removal it opens the question as to what will now top the list of dangerous activities for youngsters, and face the vigilance of health and safety.

The Spanish Government has set aside 286 million euro, in order to fund the retuning and readjusting of community television aerials, needed as a result of the change and growth of the 4G telecom network. Television broadcasters have been forced to move away from the 800 MHz band in order to avoid conflicts with 4G, a process that should be completed before January the 1st, 2015. Some 55% of the population are affected by the change, with the government set to embark on an advertising campaign to inform viewers.

VOLUNTEERS GATHER TO CLEAN UP CALA FERRIS Over two containers of solid waste were collected last Sunday by more than 150 volunteers and divers who had gathered at Cala Ferris to clean up the shoreline and the seabed in one of the most ecological locations in the area. Prior to starting work representatives from the Torrevieja Department of Tourism gave a presentation on environmental care and recycling to all the children that had gathered, after which divers demonstrated basic diving techniques before explaining the days tasks. The children were then allocated into 4 groups of 12 and given gloves, bags and special hazardous waste markers before each being allocated to a supervisor. After the exercise, the Department of Tourism presented each child with a goodie bag of supplies including a snack, a bottle of water and a sticker with recycling instructions. One of the discovery’s found in the water was a bottle with a message in English, which spoke of peace and love for all. Throughout the morning, the City Biologist, Juan Antonio Pujol, toured and spoke to each of the groups explaining to them just how important their task was.
SEPTEMBER RAINS Although September is notoriously wet, this year, Torrevieja recorded three times the normal September rainfall, concentrated largely on three days. As the weather front has mostly been moving along the coastline, in a north-easterly direction, the dreaded Gota FrĂa was avoided, for now, whilst temperatures have also been 2 degrees higher than normal, on average. Although a considerable inconvenience at the time, the rain is seen as welcome to many as the region was facing one of the worst droughts in decades.
PIG OUT A new system of monitoring the weight of Iberian pigs at slaughter houses was implemented on the 1st of October. The system is now in place in 50 abattoirs, and so 97% of all pigs who are about to be killed will be weighed, with cameras recording the process, to ensure that the minimum standards are met before they are slaughtered and turned into meat for human consumption.
FATAL RESCUE Rescuers from the Cruz Roja recovered the lifeless body of a man from the waters of the old town of Algorta in Getxo, the Basque Country, after he had entered the water in order to save his dog which was seemingly in difficulty. Although the man lost his life, the dog survived the ordeal.

YOUR TELEVISION HIGHLIGHTS f you think back, long and hard, to last week, you might remember we were talking about the return of American glamorous drama Devious Maids. Well, coincidentally, this week, we celebrated the tenth anniversary since the mother of that show, Desperate Housewives, aired on ABC in America. Coincidentally, Roselyn Sanchez, now starring as housemaid Carmen Luna, was first lined up to play housewife Gabrielle, Courtney Cox was originally earmarked to play Susan and even Pamela

inally cast as Bree, but she later joined the cast as Katherine Mayfair. But, enough of the history lesson on a show that no longer exists, time to turn our attention to one that no longer exists at the moment, as cult American drama Twin Peaks is set to return to our screens in 2016, 25 years after we first said goodbye. Ah, but there´s a link here too, in case you don´t remember, Twin Peaks starred Kyle MacLachlan, later to join Desperate Housewives as Bree´s other half, Orson. Now, we shall return to home shores, assuming that It’s Ten Years since ‘Desperate Housewives’ first appeared on TV

home is Chelsea, as Channel 4 announced that their E4 based, scripted, sorry, “structured-reality television series”, returns to Chelsea after a dramatic
summer in New York, and features three new characters, Tiffany Watson (Tiff), Lonan O’Herlihy and Will Colebrook. A show enjoyed by young and old alike, although mostly young. On the subject of young people, many of us of a certain age may have enjoyed the fact that our creations, or works of art, may have once been featured on TV, thanks to the likes of the late Tony Hart and Vision On, well, the very young of today have the opportunity to have their work showcased too, although not by using pencils and crayons as such, but rather their skills with digital devices. “CBBC is giving the next generation of digital content creators an amazing opportunity to design a game that will be turned into a free app and released across the UK for all kids to play.” The competition is open to 6-12 year olds and the winning idea will be chosen by a panel chaired by The Duke of York. Richard McCourt and Dominic Wood, who seem to be trying to shake off their pseudonyms, Dick & Dom, launched the competition this week. Time to turn our attentions to the more mature audiences now then, as the BBC has this week announced a major new six-part John le Carré series, The Night Manager. Described as a postCold War fusion of spies and organised crime, a book that is both hugely exciting and frighteningly plausible. It´s the first BBC television adaptation of a le Carré novel for almost 30 years, since A Perfect Spy aired in 1987. Meanwhile, filming began this week on a new BBC production, River, written and created by Emmy award-winning Abi Morgan, and starring Stellan Skarsgård, as seen in the hit film, The Girl With The
Dragon Tattoo, as John River, a brilliant police officer whose genius and fault-line is the fragility of his mind - a man haunted by the murder victims whose cases he must lay to rest. The show also features Nicola Walker, recently seen in Last Tango In Halifax but more famous for Spooks, playing River’s colleague and confidant, Detective Sergeant Jackie ‘Stevie’ Stevenson. ITV on the other hand have announced the cast for their new “atmospheric” thriller Safe House. Former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston will be joined by Marsha Thomason from White Collar, and Paterson Joseph who was rumoured to play the Doctor recently, in a new four-part, tense thriller set in the beautiful wilderness of the Lake District. Filming also began this week on the story which revolves around a married couple, former detective Robert and teacher Katy, who are asked by close friend and police officer Mark to turn their remote Guest House into a Safe House. Their first ‘guests’ at the Safe House, are a family in fear of their lives after they are violently attacked by someone who claims to know them. So it looks like we have a little something for everybody in this latest batch of future TV reviews, and we didn´t have time to mention the BBC celebrating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, or their celebration of the brilliance of Rembrandt, but if you´re lucky, next week, we might talk about a crisis at LAX airport that leaves dozens of airplanes unable to land, and so, the Government enlists a team of misfit geniuses to save the day in the ITV´s premiere of Scorpion.

WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE LEA DER
Last month I spent some time working at The Leader as part of a work experience option for the last year of my Media degree at Kingston University. When I landed at Murcia airport I had no idea what to expect, I had never worked for a newspaper before and had no idea when picking up a daily or weekly newspaper of all the work that goes in to it. That's one thing you never think about when reading a newspaper until you experience it first hand. My first days were spent learning about how things work at The Leader. I was shown things such as how to design pages, how to send pages to the printers, what a page in a newspaper should look like and I was told about what was done each day to ensure the paper was ready for release on a Monday. After learning the ropes I was fully treated as a Leader employee with my own responsibilities such as doing my own research, writing articles, designing pages and attending client meetings. My favourite part was getting the chance to interview people in the area. I first got to interview local favourite, entertainer Stevie Spitt. I had never interviewed anyone before and although I was nervous at first it felt almost natural to me as soon as I started asking questions. It was great to then use my research to write my own article and actually see it printer in a newspaper. What amazed me even more
was when I sat in on an interview with Raquel Pena after seeing her amazing flamenco dancers and then my article featured front page! I never thought I would see the day. My time at The Leader has taught me so much. The amount of work that goes into ensuring each newspaper is ready to be sent to the printer amazed me, even down to getting those last minute news stories in that happen before sending them off to print. What impressed me the most was how organised everyone down at The Leader is though so much so that they make all that hard work look easy. The great thing about working for a local newspaper is you get a real insight into absolutely everything that goes into producing a paper. From the design, to the writing of most articles, to the distribution, The Leader do it all themselves. Had I had experience at a national paper I feel as though the experience would have been nowhere near as enriching for me as I'm sure that they had different people for each of their jobs. I would like to thank everyone at The Leader so much for giving me the opportunity of this work experience. I have learned so much to go back to university with and have so many stories to share (and I am sure many students will be very jealous of a job where after you've finished a day at the office you can go and lay down by the pool) and I also have a new appreciation for my local newspaper.

RELEASE HELPS RAISE FUNDS FOR CAMPOVERDE CHURCH By Maggie Dew “Release” are a multi-talented female duo made up of Rebecca Holt and Elise Macgregor, who have delighted audiences on the Costa Blanca with their breathless mix of singing, dancing Elise and Rebecca and performing. are ‘Release’. The people of Campoverde now have the chance to hear them for themselves at a special charity concert organized by Campoverde Church and supported by the Rusty Nail and other local businesses. The money raised from the show will be used to buy a baptismal font for the church. Up until now the church has had to borrow a font from other churches when people want their children baptized. The church felt it was time that the people of Campoverde had their own font and the idea for the show was born. “Release” were approached and asked if they would bring their show to Campoverde (for free) and they readily agreed as it is for such a worthwhile cause. Having looked for a suitable venue for the concert the church approached Jimmy at the Rusty Nail who said he would be delighted to host the show (also for free) as he fully supports the work of the church. The show will be on Friday October 24 commencing at 8.30 pm. Entry to the show is at no charge but donations will be gratefully received. There will also be a grand raffle where all prizes have been donated by local businesses. Once purchased the baptismal font will be inscribed with the words “Purchased With Funds Raised by the People of Campoverde” and the church will hold a special service of dedication. Further information can be obtained from Maggie on 966 76 2264 or 693 513 678 or e-mail maggieruthdew@hotmail.com. CHARITY YOGA EVENT IN TORRE DE LA HORADADA A new Yoga Studio has just been opened in Torre de la Horadada by Amanda Dee Zapanta, originally from England, but living and teaching yoga in NYC for the past 15 years. She moved here 1 year ago and is now using her skills to create a yoga center in Torre De La Horadada, to hopefully build a community and continue with her healthy lifestyle. Amanda is contacting members of the local community, and some of the charity shops in the area, in order to collaborate in fundraising assistance for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC). She hopes to do this by hosting an event related to yoga in her center where she will offer a donation based yoga class (about 5 Euros pp) as well as a live music concert by Andrew Zap and some beverages. It will all take place on Friday October 17th at 7pm so why not go along and try something different for a very worthy cause. (www.sunsalutestudio.com)

ROJALES NETBALL CLUB PIPPED AT THE POST
ADVERTISING HOTLINE
Rojales started the second half strongly and managed to pull back the deficit to even the score until the final minutes when a couple of stray passes enabled Madrid to counterattack and finish the game with a 10-7 win. Although Rojales were disappointed to have lost it was a great team performance and a enthralling game for the spectators to watch. Members of Rojales' Council were on hand to present the winning trophy and best player award which went to Rojales' GA, Carly. Rojales Netball Club would like to thank Pam, Heather and Luke for their help during the day, and of course Rojales Ayuntamiento for their continued support. If you want to be part of this successful netball club come along on a Tuesday to the Norwegian School in Quesada from 7pm-8.30pm or contact Tracey on 679539995 for further details.

HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY AT RIQUELME Last week the Happy Days Golf Society held a “Two Ball Better Ball Comp” at Riquelme Golf course. Although this is a long course with good greens it proved a hard day for many players as the weather was very hot. The tournament began at 11.00am with 32 players attending and some excellent golf followed. The results show Martin Lowe and Alan Winter in 1st place with 44 pts, with Ken Farrow and Chris Taite in 2nd with 43 pts. Liam and Margaret O’Brien finished 3rd with 42 pts with John MacGregor and Kenny Reddington in 4th place with 41 pts. In the “Two’s Competition” three people managed holes in two, Andy Shuttle, Willy Naughton and Jack Sheridan. In the “Nearest The Pin Competition” Dave Naylor won at hole 5, Jack Sheridan at hole 7, and Willy Naughton at hole 17. One notable hole was played by Steve Dickson at
Two teams from Madrid, one from Murcia and one from Huddersfield in the UK spent the day playing netball against Rojales on Saturday, 4 October. Rojales started the day playing some good netball beating the UK team 13-12 followed by wins against Madrid B and Murcia (in which their newest recruit Angela truimphed). Their final game was to be the tournament decider against the big guns, Madrid A. Rojales had beaten them on their previous meeting in June so Madrid were really up for revenge. Rojales' centre court of Donna, Tracy and Ronnie started well getting the ball into their shooters, Sam and Carly, who were under extreme pressure from a strong Madrid defence to convert their shots. At the other end of the court Rojales' defence of Claire and Sophie were making life very difficult for the Madrid shooters by breaking down their rhythm of play. At half time the score was 6-4 to Madrid and still all to play for.

hole 4, which is a par 5. He was putting for an Eagle, but sadly had to accept a Birdy, but he was so close. Ironically, even had Steve got the Eagle, he still would not have got onto the leader board, so strong was the rest of the play. When the day was over, everyone retreated to their spiritual home and “19th hole” at the Marinasol Restaurant in Cabo Roig where a very welcome and filling hot and cold buffet was provided. Everyone was tired and hot and there were a few red faces, necks and arms caused by the sun; but no-one seemed to notice and the chatting and banter went on well into the early evening, rounding off a very enjoyable day for all. The Society’s next comp is on 21st October at La Torre. If you would like more info then ask the staff at the Marinasol Restaurant in Cabo Roig and they would be happy to help.

180´s: Peter Ayres (Porter House), Pat Abrams (Meerkats) Highest finish: 112 John Walker (Que Pasa Eagles) Two weeks into the season and a couple of issues have already come to the fore. Firstly, result cards contain important information which may be used for varying reasons later in the season and therefore must be returned by Tuesday following each match to either the Hub (Villamartin) or the Euronics showroom at El Galan. Alternatively they may be passed directly to Derek Kingsbury, the League´s fixture and results controller. Do not discard or believe they are of no importance. Secondly, the top of the range dart boards supplied free issue at the start of the season are to be used only for Thursday night Euronics darts, which will include league fixtures and some competitions appertaining to the league. They are not to be used for any other reason or left up for practice. By complying with this simple reasoning every team will play on the same quality equipment, with a board still in good condition at the end of the season, having been used for 11 home games and competitions where applicable. Teams failing to comply will be asked to replace their board with a new one at their cost. On now to some interesting results. The Porters recovered from last week´s loss to impose successive losses on the Pint Depot Kings. The away side got off to a reasonable start via Eddie Fozzard taking out the remaining 58 points of 701 in the first triples, using S18,S20,D10. Peter Ayres levelled on D1, with the third triple remaining. Captain Ray Sanderson put out a decent three, himself, Ayres and Sid Cross to face Gary Minor, last week´s man of the match, Dave Wright and Rob Hogorn. In a tit for tat leg Ayres made it 2-1 for the Porters on D5. Stalwart Ayres figured yet again in the opening doubles partnering Yvonne Rouffignac to finish the third leg of the evening on his favoured D1. Believe it or not, it was the fifth leg of the night before a ton was recorded, courtesy of Ray Hayes, who mysteriously wasn’t a registered player for the Porters until 24 hours prior to the league
commencing, despite being part of the Porter´s furniture. Are they trying to tell you something Ray? Two tons in reply from Martin Bynorth 119 and Minor, wasn’t enough however to deter Hayes partner Brian Nash from taking out D10. A ton from Sanderson in the last leg before half time was insufficient as Frankie Wieczorek, recorded a ton of his own and then D2 for 4-2 at the break. A further ton from Frankie, this time a 125 was matched by Hayes who also managed D8 and D10 for the first single. Cross repeated the score line in the second against Fozzard using D10 and D1, plus a 140 and 100 for the draw and at least one point. Matt Cummins opened with a ton in the next plus D4 against Rouffignac and looked comfortable for 2-0 after hitting a further ton. The popular Porter had other ideas taking out D10 to level and then banging in two more tons, despite a 140 from Cummins. The double 16 beckoned for Rouffignac who couldn’t do anything but oblige second arrow for the match. A fine effort followed from Ayres in his match versus Bynorth. Scores of 100,140 and a maximum were just too much for the visitor as the sometimes comedian but genuine good guy planted D10 and D18 for an excellent victory. Dave Wright showed why he was sorely missed last week by recording a couple of tons and D12 in his match with the home captain, who responded well with a 100,125,D4 and a nice 93 out (T19,D18) for 2-1. Minor´s 3x100 and a leg were not enough as Nash outscored the visitor with 3x100,123,D16 and a fine D14 for 10-2. Another 22 ton haul for current champions Meerkats proved too much for the amiable Bulls from Gogarty´s. A lone ton from Bliss Wright after the triples was all Steve Woods side could muster as the visitors took the first 3, through Pat Abrams 2x100,D2 and D13, Paul Durrant contributing D5. Last year´s singles champion Abrams continued where he left off, this time pairing with Danos Bobinas, scoring 100,180 and D4 for 0-4. Despite this powerful scoring opponents Gail Todd and Brian Newton 101 needed only 70 of the 601 points. Alex Nikolov made it 0-5 on D2, leaving Cynthia Jevons to take the first leg for the Bulls on D7 at the break, where upon the directive of a 15 minute break was totally ignored as extra time was required to devour the sausage rolls, beans, fries and sandwiches, excellent stuff! Kevin Prockter kicked off the second half against Abrams with D4 for the first leg ignoring his opponent´s 132. Abrams levelled with 2x100 and D16. Scoring pretty well level in the decider, it was the Kat coming out on top with D15. Nikolov edged out the host captain, how I don’t know after what he ate! 2x100,D2 and D5 was enough to out-do opponent Woods. Newton acquitted himself well versus Lee Maiden taking out the middle leg of 3 with a ton and D16. In the third single however, it was Maiden back in his stride after last season´s success, with 100 and a 75 out (T17,D12) in the first and 140,D4 for the match. An earlier 140 gave the Kat a nice tally of 2x140, 2x100 and a 75 out for the evening. A 124 and a 95 didn’t prove enough for the aptly named Bliss in her tussle with Durrant. It was closer than the 0-2 score line suggests as the visitor completed his 501´s on D16 and D10. Kat Kingsbury gave a real captain´s performance in the penultimate match against Richard Pattison, a 138,140 but disappointing D1 was levelled by the Bull on D10. Pattison opened with a ton in the third, but committee stalwart Kingsbury dug deep and found 125 and then D2 for a fine win. Alan Ostrowski figured last for the Kats and promptly took the first on D9. To rapturous applause the game was levelled by opponent Jevons on D7. With the throw in the third the Bull edged in front to take the third and deserved 12th leg. The Hyenas opened this year´s account with a nice victory over the Jackals, after last week´s void match against Gogarty´s, yet to be played. Captain Simon Williams had a strong squad at his disposal, reflected by the half time 5-1 score line. Williams himself wrapped up the match and both points defeating Phil de Lacy 2-1. Newcomer Nick Spicer was clearly man of the match with 9 tons and 4 game shots. The final Division 1 match was a real ding dong affair as you can imagine with last term´s second and fourth placed teams Eagles and Busters respectively. John Walker carried on from where he left off last week with 4x100,2x135,1x140 and an excellent 112 game shot. He was assisted by Jim Storey 2x100,1x140 with Den Hall, Kevin Wood and Joe Cuyt scoring tons. This was countered by Mark Filer´s
Lisa and Karl Mallinson from Liverpool who run the Ale House
3x100,1x128, Peter O´Rourke 3x100, Paul Dowington´s 4x100, 125 with tons from Will Drummond and Ray Harvey. Great match! Junction Jaguars got their first points of the season in a fine win over Misfits from Sporting Life. New signing Pat Schofield got off to a flyer with two tons in the triples but Jaguar Jo Brown took the leg. Leah Chesworth made it 2-0 followed by Lucy Maiden scoring 81,119 before Simone de Lacy pulled one back on D20. High scoring Sharon Bugg levelled on D7, setting up Lisa Ivill to take the lead from Jaguars on D4. Wendy Hayward D5 gave the hosts a comfortable half time lead at 4-2. Hayward did her best to unsettle George Caine with some tasty scoring but the Misfit ignored her efforts and took out D20. De Lacy, last term´s Ladies Merit Table topper put in a decent performance against Chesworth, despatching 140,60,85 and D16. Bugg ensured the point for the Junction with a ton and double to boot. Schofield made it both points for the Jaguars despite some excellent scoring from Brown, 80,128. Hilda Wilkinson found D16 against professional dancer Zoe James leaving Tracy Simpson to face Karl Cooper in the 12th. 70,140,85 was enough for the Jaguar to reach the double, but continued missed darts let in hulk Cooper 83,100 and the remaining double for 8-4. The Tavern Drivers made it maximum points from two matches, taking out the Kestrels at Que Pasa. John Dursley ensured the draw and a point on D7 followed by Ian Brown hitting D12 gaining both points for the Tavern. Justin Hepburn top scored for the visitors on 133. At 2 apiece it looked to be a close score Gilly Kirby and Chris Miles gaining the doubles for Que Pasa; Rick Cox and Stu Mitchell replying for the Tavern. The visitors then won two doubles and the first 4 singles, 6 on the bounce, for the match. For the second week running Mitchell was nominated man of the match. At the Pint Depot the Queens went one up to Breakaways via Marie Dunne, S17,S12,D6 which was soon wiped out by Mike Smith D2 who then repeated his efforts in the third leg for 1-2. By a quirk of the draw, Smith was again on aided by Ivan Jones 100. Smith was in top double form, hitting his third of the night on D6. Cheryl Sleath reversed the trend on D6. Newly appointed Royal Sharon Topham hit T17,T17, expecting a maxi on the 17s, but somehow found the wall, allowing Mike Snow in on D8 for 2-4. Rachel Broadhead spent all her time at the Palace during the summer practising her doubles and it showed as her first dart found D12 for 3-4. Jones should have lost to Vi Turner who couldn’t manage a double leaving her opponent to take the leg 3-5. Her most Royalness Queen Debbie Wright added another for the Depot, albeit on D1 after a top score of 124, (T18,bull,S20) what on earth was she going for? Smith ensured the draw and point on D17 his fourth of the night. Snow gained the win and points for the Bears, Lorraine Cox busting on more than one occasion. Consistent scoring from Sarah Simpson including a ton should have taken the last leg, but it was Dunne taking the honours on D7 for a 57 result that on another occasion could have gone the other way. By Ron Sheldon Week 5, October 6th and we have yet another two 7-2 results, the first at El Cortijo Nacho where Ron’s Voles entertained my Ventura Falcons and submerged us with hard luck and smiling thank you’s having Ron & Val with 3 wins while for us it was Barry & Jill’s turn for a zero score. The 2nd 7-2 result was for Dorothy’s Izzys Magpies taking them to the league top spot against Les’s Mr Smiths Jays who unfortunately could only muster 2 pairs which is a disadvantage to start and forfeit 3 games. Peter’s Galleon moved up to 2nd place with a good win over Mike’s Izzys Peacocks who were looking for their 1st win. For the Galleon Peter & Alan had 3 wins while for the Peacocks all 3 pairs could only manage 1 win each. Brian’s E&I Jaguars also reached 8 points in a close game with 2 pairs winning 2 games each while for Jim’s Siesta Sharks Peter & Dennis stumbled even to reach zero. At Catorce John’s team had a fine win against Keith’s E&I Merlins whose 3 pairs gained 1 game each while 2 pairs for Catorce maximised with 3 games each. In the Casa Ventura, Richard’s Ospreys slipped up against Brian’s rejuvenated Galea “B” team who had 2 pairs with 2 wins each while for the Ospreys, Phil and Sue D topped out with their 3 wins. Ayliff’s Galea “A” stuttered this week in a close match against Steve’s Steakhouse who had 2 pairs gaining 2 wins while Alan and Peter excelled for Galea with their 3 wins. Alan’s Mr Smiths Robins dipped out in some epic clashes for their 3 wins against Mick’s visitors from Lo Crispin whose 3 pairs scored 2 wins each while Joe and Nigel for the Robins slid down the snakes with a zero.

We played full handicap stableford,4 N/t/p's, and the usual twos pot . Results were pins. No 6 Nick Brooks, No 10 Ray Pryce, No 14 John McKay, No 18 Jack Todd. Three shared the two's pot. On Tuesday 7th October the Happy Days Golf Society held a “Two Ball Better Ball Competition” at the Requelme Golf course. Although this is a long course with good greens it proved a hard day for many players as the weather was very hot with just a slight cooling breeze. One notable hole was played by Steve Dickson at hole 4, which is a par 5. The Happy Days Golf Society’s next competition is on 21st October at La Torre Golf course. If you would like to join Happy Days, or just want to know more, then ask the staff at the Marinasol Restaurant in Cabo Roig and they would be happy to help.

SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB
Firstly congratulations to Colin Lindgren & Keith Jones, who won the men's pairs in the Valencian Championships, last Saturday 4th at Vistabella. Secondly, welcome to all our new & returning members. The Winter League kicked off the winter season on Wednesday 8th with a home match v Monte Mar, a reasonable result with 8 points-4 & shots 94-78. Winning teams: Colin Jackson, June Jones, Colin Lindgren & Keith Jones 27-9. Ann Holland, Pam Lockett, Noel Verity & Mal Hughes 16-14. Shirley Verity, Scott Malden, Jules Pering & Russell Marks 24-12. Unfortunately no points for the Berleen team this week. Chicken Drive: winner on Sunday 5th was Keith Blood & on Wednesday 8th (freshly back from UK) was Geoff Shand. Following the club meeting on Sunday 5th, our 4 SABA & 4 Southern teams were confirmed; team lists are on the noticeboard. Members were reminded that if a team defaults in a particular league then all of that team will have to
drop out and will not be allowed to play in that particular league for the rest of the season. Also because of the number of matches there are more afternoon games. Consequently it has been agreed that for Friday Southern league matches the trial ends will be played at 10:15 so that the actual match can start on time at 10:30. Please check the noticeboards for availability sheets for the up-coming league matches, Southern league starts Friday 17th and SABA league on Monday 20th. The green is unavailable from Thursday 9th – Saturday 11th because of the San Luis 4-2-2 Open competition, therefore Vic's hamper will run on Tuesday 14th, instead of Saturday 11th. Social dates for your diary: Race Night – Saturday 1st November (5€ p.p.) it looks as though it will be a fun packed evening. Saturday 6th December, the club Christmas dinner will be held at Sun Rise restaurant, at Playa Flamenca commercial centre. Please put names down on the lists for both events or speak to Frank Reid for info. Sheila Cammack.
EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB Someone once said; the Emerald Isle is just a roll up club; well I don't think so! Geoff Farrington, & Jim Mulloy (club captain) reached the men's pairs final, as did Frank Close in the men's singles, Gina Streeter & Barbara Collins reached the semis but lost out in a close game. On finals day at least 2530 E.I. supporters turned out to watch Geoff & Jim take on Keith Jones & Colin Lindgren, Keith & Colin led all the way, but a gallant fightback by Jim & Geoff saw a very close finish with Colin & Keith winning by just Couple of points. Unlucky lads, you came close. Then it was on to the Men's singles, again Colin Lindgren was the opponent, but this time he faced the E.I.s favourite bowler Frank Close. What a match! Colin was ahead for most of the game but Frank was like a Bulldog with a bone, after about 16 ends it began to rain but not one supporter went for shelter & to our collective joy Frank at last took the lead & ran out the winner by 21-17. These are two great SPORTSMEN, who gave us the most exciting match I have ever seen, both men celebrated their respective wins with a small beer each, back at the Emerald later in the evening. The next day the E.I. had its monthly Chicken &
Egg run, and yes you guessed, Frank Close took part (no he didn’t win) 'Old Bob Percy; won the Men's prize & Renata Mulloy won the ladies prize. Brin Colbeck and Sheila Wickens won the eggs. On Tue 7th we entertained our friends The Highjackers, the Emerald ran out winners by 7 rinks to 1. Our biggest winners were Alex Fay, Liz Page & Joe Elliot, who won the cash, Eddie, Leone, &Mike P, who won for the Highjackers. The other winners for the Emerald were: Mary Elliot, Marrion Willicot & Ron Ede: Elwyn Morris, Sheila Howcroft & Alan Howcroft: Sandra Kavanagh, Sheila Adams &Brin Colbeck: Don Martin, John Wood & Frank King: Maria Brookes, John Pooley & Brian Kavanagh: Anne Ede, Robin Adams & Eric Brookes. A good win for the E.I. but more importantly a good natured game, many thanks to the Highjackers .On wed 8th, the Emerald played host to a team from G.B. Personal Touch, the E.I. Won by 5 rinks to 1 with a shot diff of 139 to 73. Unfortunately at the time of writing I haven't got the names of the individual winners, but well done to the team. Once again; Not bad for a roll up club" Keep up the happy bowling". Robin Adams.

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB
By Paul Thomas Valencia Championships have now finished congratulations to Anita Brown who won the ladies singles. Mixed trips won by John Marshall, Alan and Nancy Campbell there games were nail biting from quarter finals they were losing and came back well so well they needed an extra end the opposition were holding when Alan came in with his last wood and it was a measure for shot, Alan’s wood was holding by a very slim margin, the same happened in the semi final they needed an extra end and again super shot Alan saved the day. Well done to the winners they all played extremely well. Also well done to Christine and Malcolm Parsons who got a hot shot in the mixed pairs but unfortunately did not win the game. Southern Leagues start on the 17th October SABA League starts on the 20th October don’t forget to check if you have been picked and tick your name off. Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties SL This week saw the start of the Winter season although temperatures would dispute this! A good start for our Winter League Squad taking all the points at La Siesta in both the main League and the Berleen. This week saw our annual President v Captain contest with Mike Lamberton and George Skinner taking the helms. A good result for Captain George's team despite the President fielding very strong opposition! Last week a lot of our members were at the finals of the Valencian Championships supporting our Ladies Singles finalist Jaqui Johnson, in her first major competition final since coming to Spain last year, playing against Anita Brown, a former winner. What a match this turned out to be and the result was unpredictable until the final moments when Anita with two excellent shots, took the title. Well done Jaqui. Spons by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice The Valencian Championships finished with some mixed results as far as Vistabella Bowls Club is concerned, unfortunately Lin and Charlie Watkins lost their Mixed Pairs final as did Stuart Allman, Jenny Bowman and Richard Lee in the Mixed Trips but things really looked up in the Mixed Rinks with a commanding victory for Lynn Bishop, Charlie Watkins, Les Barber and Eric Bishop. Our two winning rinks were Lin Watkins, Tony French, Brian Dunn and Maggie Furness and Lynn Bishop, Sandra Burrows, Neil Burrows and Eric Bishop. Next week will be fairly quiet with only the first Southern League games to report but after that we will be back in full swing.

Lynn Greenland and Sheila Stead against Sue Mahomet and Averil Toozer with Sue and Avril coming out the winners. La Siesta Bowls Report By Norman Adcroft Winter League 8th October. Not a good start. We can only get better. Our opening game against last? seasons winners (Quesada) was terribly frustrating. We lost on all rinks. Our Berleen Team lost by just 1 shot. Well done to our new members, who played their first winter league game and all played well. Special thanks to John & Penny Porter who came in at the last minute. Saturday 4th October, we played a touring side from England, with everyone saying what a very pleasant and enjoyable afternoon they had had. They hoped that our Club would be on their list of games for next year. We won on 6 rinks. We did a raffle and raised 108 euro for the club. Monday 6th October, we entertained the Legionnaires with a Memorial Game for John Owen. This was such a success, they have asked it to be an Annual Event. Marion Owen presented the trophy to La Siesta and 72 euro was collected for
the Poppy Appeal. La Siesta won 5 rinks. Dianne Budd asked me to pass on sincere gratitude to everyone, who gave up their time and money to play. International Match La Siesta hosted Wales V Scotland on Sunday Oct. 5th what an exciting morning plenty of banter on 6 games of rinks .Games went to the last wood on the last end with Barry Evans team the only rink left on the green. Wales 90---91 down Wales were holding shot so a draw was on the cards but Barry had other ideas and drew a perfect wood for Wales for a Wales win 92--91 PHEW !!! THANK YOU Scotland for a lovely mornings bowling. Chicken and egg 8th October. Chicken. Barrie Bell. Wine. Leon Ceustermaus. Eggs. Lily Smith. Members of La Siesta please note a change in the start date for the Christmas Hamper. It will not start on the 14th October but on the 21st October.

‘Mike Probert talks Golf (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Humming Your Swing’ One of the biggest causes of bad golf shots is over-tightening of the muscles. I suppose that strictly speaking the use of the word overtightening when referring to individual muscles is incorrect as they can’t be over or under contracted as they are either flexed or relaxed. However the term over-tightening is a good way to explain the problem and more simply put is probably the contracting and use of too many muscles to undertake the task at hand. Probably the best example of this is the dreaded YIPS when it feels as though every muscle in your hands, arms and shoulders are working against each other at the same time. With reference to the golf swing, over-tightening of different parts of the body at different times causes different kinds of errors and problems. When you read stuff like this it really makes you wonder how we hit the ball at all don’t it! Remember that we do this to ourselves for fun! Now you are not unique here because according to sports psychologist Tim Galloway, to tighten is a natural instinct for humans when faced with danger, doubt or the unknown. Ok then, just how do we reduce the impact or identify the presence of over-tightening on our golf swing and us? There are a number of different methods but the one that will explain will give you the most fun and pleasure when practising or playing, although you may get some funny looks! The next time you visit the practise area i want you to try ‘humming’ throughout your golf swing. Just take a few practise swings and’ listen to the humming’. Even those of you who don’t think they have an over-tightening problem will note a change of pitch of sound throughout their swing. You will note that at first the sound is smooth but during the change of swing direction and at the point of impact the sound becomes ‘strained’ .Particularly at the point of contact with the ball you will note the high pitch of the sound and can almost feel the tightening taking place and you may even notice that just after impact the humming sounds stops completely. Now that you understand what is happening to your body just what do you do now? Very simply you continue swinging and humming and use the humming as BIOFEEDBACK for increased and improved control. Not more jargon! No, just accept that at a subconscious level your body will start to relate the sound of humming to body tightness and make changes accordingly. Don’t try to swing deliberately slower because there is a danger that your swing will become loose and lacking power, simply swing and hum until you feel less strain in your humming. This whole process has little to do with sound but more to do with awareness within yourself of how your body works throughout the golf swing and how better to control it at times of maximum stress and pressure. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. This week we travelled to Villamartin to play our monthly individual stableford. The weather was very good to us and the course was in very good condition. The best score on the day came from John Collins in Division 2 you know what they say beware the injured golfer John came in with 40pts well done. In second place in Div 2 was Ian Smith with 35pts the new clubs are starting to work in 3rd was the top lady of the day Christine Flanagan just one point back on 34pts In Division one the top scorer was Paul Matthews on 33pts which keeps him ahead in the player of the year. In second place on count back was Frank Murphy with 31pts just taking it from Les Doherty this division was close with only 6 points from top to bottom. The one point i must bring up is that we had someone 6 putt in this division and he was only to pleased to tell us all but sorry no name in the paper. The next Society's game is on Wednesday, 22nd October 2014 at La SERENA. 1st Tee time - 10.08am. The format will be PRESIDENT verses CAPTAIN Team game. LAS RAMBLAS REPORT
CAFÉ UNO GOLF SOCIETY.
Firstly, last friday our VEGA BAJA league team got off to an excellent start when they won all their matches to take full points from a strong La Manga team. As defending Champions we are hoping for a repeat of last seasons' success. Monday saw the start of our Stableford Week where all scores from 3 stableford competitions are aggregated to find the weeks winner. It was Angie Green, who has been threatening to come in with a big score, who got off to the best start with an impressive 42pts. Most days John Wheeler [2nd] and Ron Phipps[3rd] would be in the driving seat [both shooting 40pts] but they are still sitting in a strong position. Lurking in 4th place is Terry Field. His 37 pts resulting in more work for our infamous Handicap Secretary, Doug Wright, who took great delight in reducing his handicap to scratch! Come Wednesday, with the tees well back, the battle took a dramatic change. While Terry produced a creditable 33 pts, Ron Phipps added 34 pts to his total drawing 4 pts clear. Despite a good first nine John Wheeler slipped behind with 29 pts. However I'm afraid the "big bad wolf's" savage handicap treatment on Angie Green resulted in her Mondays score being halved!-scoring only 21 pts -.[thats golf!] The days results saw returning friends Jan Svendsen and John Collins take first place in their respective categories.-Results-- Ist category-Ist--Jan Svendsen 38 pts. [c/b] 2nd--Brian Green 38 pts 3rd Mike Frankish 36 pts. -highlight of the day being his eagle 3 at the par 5 13th! 2nd category--1st John Collins 33pts, 2nd-Yvonne Phipps 29pts [c/b] 3rd-Ken Meridith 29 pts. There were seven 2's--Bryan Neale, Dave Pulling, Mike Frankish,Terry Field, Phil Herrington,Jan Svendsen, Peter Radcliffe and , that big bad wolf, Doug Wright. Following an excellent monthly lunch on Thursday, at the "El Prado" restaurant in San Miguel, arranged as only she can, by our social secretary, Dee Biggerstaff, the week concluded on Friday in dramatic fashion. Firstly, our leader after the first two rounds, Ron Phipps, came in with a super 39 pts. While others were falling by the wayside, Terry Field produced the round of the season, amassing 41 pts, off scratch. A magnificent 5 under par gross. Unfortunately ,while he was the winner on the day, Ron, with his own fine effort held on to win the weeks "aggregate score" trophy. The results on the day were--1st Terry Field 41 pts, 2nd Ron Phipps 39 pts, 3rd Doug Wright 37 pts, [c/b] 4th Henrick Oldenziel 37 pts. Only 3 winners of the 2's pot--Brian Green, Norman Page and completing a very good week, Doug Wright. For the record the "aggregate score" prize winners [to be presented at our presentation lunch next month] were-- 1st Ron Phipps 113 pts 2nd Terry Field 111 pts 3rd Tom Hardie 99 pts, 4th John Wheeler 97 pts. Tom Hardie.
27 players from the Café Uno Golf Society turned out today Thursday 9th October, to play the challenging (to put it mildly) Las Ramblas golf course. It happens to be one of my favourite courses, but it is a `Marmite course`, you either like it or you hate it. Many balls were lost and some tempers frayed, but that can be seen on any golf course it's the nature of the game, but we keep coming back for more, hoping for that illusive perfect scorecard. Anyway, the scores were as follows:Gold Category. 1st G.Benson -31pts. 2nd S.Lawrence - 29pts. Best front 9 - J.Saunders - 14pts. Best back 9 - D.Stewart - 14pts. Nearest the pin - A.Duchart. Nearest the pin in 2 - A.Duchart. Silver Category. 1st C.Pepperday - 26pts. 2nd B.Howie - 24pts. Best front 9 - B.Wood - 14. Best back 9 - D.Bishop - 15pts. Nearest the pin - B.Wood. Nearest the pin in 2 - Nobody. Winner of the 2's competition - A.Duchart. Next week, Thursday 16th October we are at Vistabella. 09;30am 1st tee time. Please be at the course 1 hour prior to this time. The members send 'best wishes and get well soon', to our captain Tony Macmillan who is poorly at this time. Thanks to Café Uno staff for the after game hospitality. Regards, Steve Lawrence.
CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY This week we returned to Vistabella for our weekly stableford competition. The weather was warm and dry, a relief after the recent rains, and the course was in its usual good condition. The greens were a little too soft and easily marked up especially as it appeared that someone ahead of us was wearing metal spikes and was prone to foot dragging. That's enough ranting the golf was very enjoyable with a pleasantly surprising winner of the main prize. Results were: Nearest the pin on hole 4 was Charlie Rodgers NTP on hole 8 and the longest drive on hole 18 was John Porter Nearest the par 4 16th in 2 was Barry Moss Winner with 35 points was Norman McGibbon Runner up with 34 points on count back was Robert Wardrop who just edged out Martin Cunningham. Next week we are at La Serena meet at the bar at 08:00. Please note we will be having our annual Poppy Day Appeal event on Thursday 13 November at Vistabella please make every effort to attend to support this great cause.
