More than five hundred enthusiasts from Spain were joined by aficionado’s from Germany, Poland, Belgium, Italy, Australia, India, France, England, Portugal and the United States at the 6th National and 4th Murcia edition of the ‘Relive History through Film’ re enactment weekend, a spectacular staging of many of the most important battles in history. Defence and a number of local companies. For WW11 enthusiasts the vehicles on show included more than fifty historical civilian and military vehicles including a German anti-aircraft gun which was used in the Spanish Civil War, an American M-41 tank and a German truck that was used in the film 'Valkyrie' starring Tom Cruise. The first re enactment took place on Friday afternoon in the Plaza de Santo Domingo when scenes from the 1944 Warsaw Uprising were played out. That was followed on Saturday morning by a Napoleonic re-creation tribute to the Count of Floridablanca (1810), and then on Saturday afternoon, the main event of the weekend, a short remembrance Service and wreath laying ceremony in the Gardens of Malecon. The service itself was conducted by representatives of Murcia Town Council, the Spanish Foreign Legion and its airborne Division. The wreath was laid by Terry Watson, President of the Torrevieja Veterans Association. It was followed by a Veterans Parade which included two Chelsea Pensioners, Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale, who had flown over especially for both this event and Wednesday’s launch of the RBL Poppy Appeal in Spain. They were joined by well over two hundred members of the Costa Blanca Service Associations, The RBL, RNA, RMA and RAFFA. Following the parade we then stood in awe as, for almost an hour and a half, we watched the re enactment of the WW11 ‘Operation Plunder’, the 21st Army Group's crossing of the Rhine, which began on the 23rd March 1945 and had involved Twenty-Nine Divisions. The crossing was led by a heavy artillery shelling and supple-

Monday, 20th October, 2014 mented by an airborne operation (Operation Varsity) by the American 17th Airborne Division and the British 6th Airborne Division and was one of the final stages of World War II causing the breakdown of the German army. On Saturday afternoon in Murcia the Codex Belix Association replicated the battle in Murcia City Centre, along the Paseo Teniente Flomesta and across the Rio Segura in front of 5,000 captivated spectators. One reenactor who had travelled from Kent, Michael Jolly, has been doing this around the world for eighteen years and shared what he thinks the crowd likes the most. "They like the action of the tank and the halftracks rolling around, they are always good for the spectators, the explosions, the gunfire really makes the whole thing so very authentic, and in Murcia they did a really good job." Sunday was a little more laid back for the participants with another opportunity for the spectators to visit the main campsite and its static displays in the Gardens of Malecon. The day was concluded by a military vehicle parade and then the final re enactment of the Liberation of Paris, also known as the Battle of Paris after which the Mayor of Murcia brought down the curtain on what had been an excellent weekend of nostalgia and history in support of a hobby that is quickly growing in momentum here in Spain amongst people both young and old and from all walks of life. If you didn’t take the opportunity to go along this year then do make sure that October 2015 is put into your diary now!

NEW SPANISH DICTIONARY PUBLISHED King Felipe and Queen Letizia attend the presentation of the 23rd edition of the dictionary of the Spanish language this week, in a ceremony held in Real Academia Española, Madrid. The dictionary is created through the collaboration of over 20 different associations, who operate under the umbrella group of the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española. The paper version of the dictionary covers 2,376 pages, and has undergone a major overhaul during the thirteen years since the previous edition in 2001. There are some 93,111 entries in the dictionary, compared with 84,431 in the previous version and double the number in the first, published in 1780. In all, the dictionary includes 195,439 definitions, including about 19,000 Americanisms, with 140,000 amendments to 49,000 items, and 1,350 words deleted. In the latest edition of the Oxford

English Dictionary, there were more than 600 new words, phrases, and senses added, including the revision of several everyday words, such as week, day, and group. New additions included fact check, workaround, and First World problem. Of course it would take far too long to detail all of the amendments here, you can assign yourself your own homework tasks to research these, other notable words, including caseworker, contrafactive, daiwhomly, High Dutchman, and Red Army Fraction, workerism, and one of our own favourites, Little Bear.

VOLVO OCEAN RACE BRINGS 75 MILLION EURO TO ALICANTE Phil Harmer on the outrigger of Team Abu Dhabi who have a short lead as the teams approach Cape Verde in the Atlantic Ocean

www.yourlocalnewspaper.info

As the Volvo Ocean Race was in full swing, businesses in and around Alicante were calculating their balance sheets to ascertain the financial value of such an auspicious event. With hotels at 80% occupancy on weekdays, increasing to 90% at the weekend, a figure much higher than a normal October, hotels certainly saw the benefits. As for the other businesses, the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration has calculated that the economic impact of the tourist influx has been valued at 75 million euro, as, on average, each visitor was spending 300 euro per day. The event has also secured employment for more than 1,300 people during the event, mostly in the

3

service and catering sector, as well as event organisation. For the City of Alicante itself, there has also been a benefit in the socio terms, with activities developed for some 2,800 children, in conjunction with the local schools, aimed at promoting cultural, educational, sports and musical activities in the sports village area. Finally, the event has had a significant impact on the brand image of Alicante, with more than 22,000 people following the event, broadcasting on 94 television channels and numerous radio stations around the world, with around 700 accredited journalists reporting on the event, collectively raising the image of the provincial capital and key city of the Costa Blanca to a new audience for future tourism.

LARGE CROWDS LAUNCH THE POPPY APPEAL IN TORREVIEJA Close to 300 people turned up on the Torrevieja seafront to celebrate the launch of the annual Poppy Appeal in eastern Spain. The area around the Paseo Juan Aparicio in the Port Area (aka Dique de Levante Breakwater) was packed with residents, holiday makers and veterans of all nationalities. It was particularly relevant that this year’s launch was carried out in Torrevieja where the Branch is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The event got underway with a short parade which was led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, followed by Standards of the Royal British Legion and other Service Associations. Also marching were two Chelsea Pensioners who had flown out especially for the occasion as well as members of the RBL, RNA, RAAFA and RMA. A contingent of Dutch Veterans, Spanish Foreign Legion and Spanish paratroopers also took part, making this a truly international event.

Following the march, an Act of Remembrance, the Last Post, Silence and Reveille, the crowd heard from the dignitaries, District Chairman, Nigel Hails, Mr Lloyd Millen, British Vice Consul in Alicante, Eduardo Dolon, the Mayor of Torrevieja and Robin Hargrave, the District Poppy Appeal Coordinator who gave a brief explanation of the the appeal. There then followed a presentation by Nigel Hails to Eduardo Dolon of a certificate in recognition of the help and support shown to the Legion and British citizens by the Torrevieja Ayuntamiento. Without this vital support the Launch in the city could not have taken place. Following the formal launch over a hundred participants then retired to the Club Nautico for a relaxed lunch. Please check the Legion website for details of Remembrance Services and Branches in the area and the locations of where poppies are available. www.britishlegion.org.uk/counties/spain-north

PIPES AND DRUMS LEAD THE WAY Sand, sea and sun provided the ideal setting for the Torrevieja Pipes & Drums to lead the Standards of the Royal British Legion at the start of the Poppy Appeal 2014. The spectators at Torrevieja were delighted as they watched the parade, which included 2 Chelsea Pensioners, march to the fisherman statue at the end of the Paseo Juan Aparico. There, a hush fell as a 2 minutes silence paid homage to the fallen servicemen and women who gave their life during the 2 World Wars and the present day conflicts. Speeches followed after which the district poppy appeal coordinator, made a heartfelt appeal to everyone to give generously. The Standard Bearers stood proudly throughout the speeches which were followed by the Spanish & the British National Anthems played by the band. DANI MARTIN ENTERTAINS 4000 STRONG AUDIENCE IN PILAR The Dani Martin concert held last weekend in Pilar de la Horadada attracted record crowds of over 4000 people. The film and television star, and former frontman of pop group El Canto del Loco, gave an absolutely rousing performance that had the audience on its feet from the very first minute. And not all were from the local area as many hardcore fans are understood to have driven from his home city of Madrid camping themselves in the enclosure for up to 24 hours before the concert started so they could get the very best positions. They joined thousands of locals and tourists who together enjoyed a night of music that also included a surprise performance by the actor, Fernando Tejero, who shared the stage for a few minutes with Dani Martin, as the pair performed a Sabina song. Pilar’s councillor for festivities said "The show was a major success which allowed thousands of people from the town to celebrate the festivities with many hundreds of others that drove in from elsewhere. Asunción Sánchez Martínez said that she was especially pleased, he said, because "the concert was conducted without incident thanks to measures that ensured the safety of all participants." Following Dani Martin’s performance the evening continued with entertainment from the group "Canalla City" which saw revelers dancing until the wee hours.

A ROLLER COASTER FOR POLITICAL TRANSPARENCY

he former mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, held a press conference this week in which she presented a list of outstanding invoices against the municipal council for the 2014 year, which amount to 14 million euro. Lorente described three of the sets of invoices as the “most scandalous”, being the provision of electrical street lighting, for which the company “Mercaluz” operates without contract, and the second being invoices to a lawyer who is said to be well known to the socialist group and is therefore directly benefiting from that association. However, it was the third point which Lorente saw as the most significant, as invoices reveal that the government team spent 23,958 euro of public money to obtain a report used by the Table of Elders to block the censure motion proposed by her Partido Popular party, along with the liberal CLR group, in January of this year. For the PP, this is proof of “cynicism to stay in power, as a plan hatched against the will of the majority”, according to Lorente, as the lawyer who presented the report also “happens to be the Mayor, Monserrate Guillén´s, personal attorney in this matter”. Lorente said that “this is the value of political survival, survival comes at a cost of all Oriolanos of more than 800,000 euro in salaries of advisers and councillors”, and is a “scam”, before concluding that “policy makers will have to face justice, because the bills have already been recounted” and brought to the attention of the PP´s lawyers. This conference coincided with the announcement on the same day that a Judge in Orihuela has opened an abbreviated procedure with the aim of prosecuting 35 people under investigation for alleged irregularities in past award of the service processing and collection and treat-

T

ment of municipal solid waste in different contract awards in the municipality of Orihuela. This case includes the former mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, as well as her predecessor, José Manuel Medina, both of the Partido Popular in Orihuela, and businessman Ángel Fenoll, who was recently found guilty in a separate corruption case and pending incarceration. In the court order, the judge claims that there is evidence of corruption, malfeasance, prohibited trading, fraud, coercion and influence peddling in the actions of the defendants. The judge also states that there is an awareness of a “criminal network” headed by Fenoll, and in the case of Lorente, amongst her actions were that she acted “with knowledge of the illegality” of the stated contract award. The order also temporarily suspends action against fellow PP politician David Antonio Costa. The actions of the order will be concluded within 30 days, at which point those named in the order will either be charged and brought to trial, or the case declared as still open. Lorente then held a press conference on Thursday and stated that she has asked the judge to provide written clarification of the evidence, as, in her opinion, there cannot be a “a single clue, not a single suspicion” of her involvement. Lorente also expressed her delight that the number of alleged crimes she is accused of have been reduced from five to three, prevarication, influence peddling and fraudulent management, “I am relieved” that the initial five crimes has now been reduced with the removal of “bribery and prohibited negotiations”, explaining that, “In street language, bribery means the number one crime that can be attributed to political office”, and that she has “peace of mind” that she is no longer

facing these “abysmal crimes”. Meanwhile, at their provincial political party conference of the Partido Popular held in Benidorm at the weekend, the members are expected to sign a new anti-corruption declaration, in which they vow to resign from office in the event of being charged in a corruption case. The declaration is not enforceable however, nor was it clear how it would affect those already charged, such as almost the entire previous PP government of Orihuela, now serving in opposition, but set to fight the next elections to try to win back the municipality they lost last time. Prior to that, earlier in the week, the Valencian government rejected a motion to prevent politicians applying for clemency in the event of criminal conviction; such was the case with the former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, whose request for clemency kept him free for many years. The motion was tabled by the PSOE socialists of Valencia, with amendments added by Compromís, which also proposed the inclusion of necessary transparency to justify executive interference with the judiciary. As the PP hold the majority of seats in Valencia, the move was rejected with the deputy of the PP, Pilar Sol, saying that they actually agree with the objective of the initiative of the PSPV, but justified the rejection as they believe that the issue is already covered by the new amendments to the Penal Code, which are pending approval. Socialist spokesperson, Verónica López, criticised the rejection and use of the “nineteenth-century instrument” of law that dates back to 1870, to exonerate those convicted of corruption and who “exercise away from politics with neatness, proper example and transparency”, and operate in more of a “Godfather style”, stressing that “it is time to change this norm as neither the country nor the policies are the same as in 1870”, and to claim “progress and change” which prevents those who “vilifies democracy and citizen interests”. For their part, Mónica Oltra from Compromís also criticised the “opacity and arbitrariness” of a pardon, whilst Ignacio Blanco of the EU said that “this is anachronistic of absolute monarchy and is being abused” and is against the “sense of impunity of the corrupt”.

COSTA VOTING INFO DETAILS RELEASED OF POINT NOW OPEN ORIHUELA OUTLET FAIR

he Orihuela Costa town hall has inaugurated the proposed information table that will offer advice on the procedures and documents required to ensure that residents of Orihuela are correctly registered on the voting list, and therefore do not miss the opportunity to have their voice heard in the next municipal elections. The Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Beaches and International Residents, Martina Scheurer, explained that the information point is staffed by volunteers from different nationalities, in order to meet the requirements of the international population of Orihuela, with representation possible in a variety of languages such as English, French, German, Norwegian, Swedish or Dutch. In addition, the councillor has asked the town hall to provide staff to offer information on whether or not a person is registered on the electoral roll, as many people come to consult the office of the register, which saturates this service. Scheurer has explained that, usually, to community nationals who enrol in the municipal register are offered the opportunity to register on the electoral roll, a process which normally only takes one

T

document attesting residence in Orihuela (such as a lease, deed or receipt for electricity, water or telephone) and identification. “It's very important that people who live here year-round get involved”, Scheurer stated, “Voting is not only a right, but a duty”, whilst also affirming the importance of registering promptly, as the deadline to register on the electoral roll ends in December. The councillor also said that many foreigners who live for more than six months a year in Orihuela do not register, interfering in the provision of services such as the post office. Thus, volunteers serving the information point will also be able to provide information on the need to register on the census, in order to reflect the actual population of Orihuela Costa, and thus provide the services that are tailored according to this. “It's important to realise the benefits of being enrolled”, Scheurer stated, as this directly affects services such as “police, postal and health centres”, which all depend on the number of census entries. Scheurer also made it quite clear that the volunteers who are operating on the information point will offer no political bias, and will simply be there to offer procedural advice without prejudice to ant political group.

The provisional plans for the Orihuela outlet and trade fair have been released this week, which will take place from the 30th of October until the 2nd of November. The event, entitled “COMERCIO EN LA CALLE”, is in conjunction with the AFIC trade association, and will take place in one of the most central areas of the city, the open plaza of the Glorieta Gabriel Miró, offering a wide range of goods and all at fantastic prices. The event will be inaugurated on Thursday the 30th of October at 11:00 in the morning, remaining open until 2pm, when it will close for a couple of hours, reopening from 5pm until 9pm. For the rest of the weekend, the show opens at 10 in the morning, closing at 2pm for lunch, reopening once again at 5pm and closing at 9, with the exception of Saturday when it will remain open until 10 pm. On the Friday evening, which is Halloween, there will be a music and dance spectacular in the streets, under the chilling and frightening title of “Night Witches”. For the more serene, there will also be a harp concert performed by Whiteveil. On the Sunday, there will be cooking workshop for kids from 11 until 1pm, presented by Zampatartas, as well as bouncy

castles at various times throughout the weekend. For the grownups, the Tapas Route is on at the same time, with 39 bars, restaurants and tearooms taking part in the event this time, each offering a drink and a snack for just 1 euro, in the hope of tantalising your taste buds enough to vote for your favourite, as the bars and restaurants stand to win a cash prize of 500 euro for first place, 300 euro for second, and 200 euro for the third placed venue. A bus is being organised from the Orihuela Costa to the city for the Saturday, with more information available at the town hall, where you will also have to book your seat, to ensure that sufficient places are made available.

TAPAS IN GUARDAMAR Guardamar del Segura launched their third Tapas Route on Friday, which will run until the 9th of November. Entitled “Tapas con historia”, the menu from the 17 participating bars and restaurants aims to bring together the gastronomic tastes and textures of the history of Guardamar, infusing Arabic culture into the everyday snacks on offer. The price for your taste of the past is 1,90 euro, and a map of restaurants is available from the tourist information office. Diners can also enter themselves into a price raffle with prizes including free meals and even shopping vouchers for some of the local shops in the town. As for the bars and restaurants themselves, they are competing for a 200 euro cash prize, and the award of a plaque marking their achievement, when the winners of this 3rd event are announced on 14 November.

DEAR DOCTOR According to estimates from the president of the Spanish Tourism Cluster of Health, Íñigo Valcaneras, the number of medical tourists coming to Spain is expected to double in the next five years, prompting calls for the creation of a new public-private partnership “SpainCares”, aimed at encouraging 200,000 patients to be treated in the country in 2019. The project will have 2.7 million euro of funding over two years, with a longer term aim of growth over the next decade.

NO BOOZY BABIES The Spanish midwifery association from the hospital of Alicante has launched a breastfeeding campaign this week, aimed at raising awareness that drinking alcohol is “incompatible” whilst lactating. A presentation was held that was attended by over a hundred mothers and soon to be mums, which highlighted the benefits of breastfeeding the newborn and the importance of nutritional care in infancy. The presentation also recommended the inclusion of non-alcoholic beer in the diet of the nursing mother, due to the “high water content” (95%) and “compounds that could be beneficial to both mother and baby”.

FISHING BLUES The port of Alicante has seen a drop in fresh fish of 58.3% in the first eight months of the year, resulting in it being one of the worst performing harbours in Spain. Valencia saw an increase of 38.6% however, whereas Castellón also saw a 3.8% drop. Across the country, a total of 157,446 tonnes of fish was landed between January and August, representing an increase of 1.9% over the first eight months of 2013, In whereas during the month of August, 18,816 tonnes was brought to shore, representing a decrease of 14.6% compared to August of 2013, according to provisional data of the State Ports. The biggest growth was seen in Tarragona with a staggering increase of 311.7%.

TORREVIEJA GREENS TAKE UP CROSSING FIGHT The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja has taken on board the long standing campaign to have a pedestrian crossing built at Los Balcones, on the CV-95 main road from the coast that heads to the motorway network. As one of the three main arterial routes serving Torrevieja, residents say that they have been demanding a zebra crossing built in the location nearest to the local commercial centre, but, according to the Los Verdes, the governing PP has “never been interested in its execution”. With a bus stop, pharmacy, commercial and catering units on one side of the road, the site is considered a danger by the residents living on the side which is not serviced by the outlet, who face a 60 metre walk along the road to the nearest crossing, just on the other side of the roundabout that serves to site, then another 60 metres back to the retail units. A zebra crossing is provided over the slip roads on either side of the main carriageway where the retail units are located, Avenida de Orihuela and Avenida de San Miguel, but once pedestrians reach the main carriageway, it does not continue. According to statements by those responsible for Territorial Highway Service in Alicante of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment, the execution of works for the installation of pedestrian crossing would be resolved by submitting the application, signed by the Mayor of Torrevieja, accompanied by the corresponding technical report, none of which have been done. In a statement, the Los Verdes say that they will continue to demand before the City Council and the Department of Infrastructure that this vital element of road safety is provided for the residents of the urbanization of Los Balcones, requiring promptness in taking action to prevent any accidents that may occur.

NO INCREASE IN WATER RATES IN TORREVIEJA Torrevieja´s water supplier AGAMED, a joint company owned by the city council and Hidraqua, will invest nearly three million euro in improving the water supply to the municipality in 2015, whilst freezing water rates for the year. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has announced that the company will invest a 927,000 euro for the renovation of the drinking water distribution network in various neighbourhoods of the city, more than 600,000 euro in the renovation of the sewage system of several streets and avenues, and more than a million euro in actions to improve storm drains around the area. Some of the specific projects that will benefit from the investment in storm drains are along the CV-905 road, a site that has seen numerous previous attempts at reducing flooding to local housing estates, the Casa Grande industrial estate, Avenida Rosa Mazón, and Avenida Pacífico on the Urbanización La Veleta. The drinking water supply will see work take place in the Urbanizaciones Rocío del Mar, El Chaparral, Las Torretas, Altos del Edén, Mediterráneo, La Veleta, Cala Ferris, San Luis, Torreblanca and Calas

Blancas, as well as La Mata and again, the Casa Grande industrial estate. The company has a total of 121,835 customers, with some 10% using the on-line “virtual office” on the website www.agamed.es to access the information relating to bills and charges. The company has also launched a Twitter account this year, infoagamed, which offers useful information as well as service problem alerts, and uses SMS to send information to clients who request it. In addition, their physical offices have attended to over 28,000 people this year, of which over 11,500 have been treated in the months of June, July and August alone.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Just Call Me Scruffy As someone who has spent most of his working life in a suit, I listened to a recent news item with some amusement. In the Spanish town of Zaragoza, it seems that the local judges have reached the end of their tether about the dress code of the local police. In their frustration, the judges have requested that the police improve their personal cleanliness and appearance, cover their tattoos and stop wearing earrings when on duty, because they are finding it difficult to identify which are the criminals and which are the police during court proceedings. Needless to say, this seemingly simple request has brought forth a flurry of anger from police officers, and their union. A memo requesting that police officers present themselves in a properly groomed and dressed manner, with a jacket and tie, if possible, seems to have provoked an outrage. Officers make the point that it is easy to identify police officers from criminals, since it is the police officers who are wearing an official badge. Maybe they have missed the point on this one? The police union has responded by demanding a meeting

CAMPOAMOR BLAZE Residents in Campoamor were woken on Monday morning with the sight of a burning car which had caught alight moments after it’s occupant had parked up on the beach road. with the provincial commissioner to request that the memo “be rectified”, but admitted that the “communications breakdown” may simply be because the commissioner is new at his job. Now, don't get me wrong, I’m all for a bit of individuality and quirkiness, when appropriate. The key for me here is ‘when appropriate’, since I am not a great lover of seeing a bank clerk wearing shorts, tee shirt, chewing gum and with arms covered in tattoos. However, it may be perfectly appropriate for popping down to the beach or off to a club for the evening. Similarly, I would not have the greatest of confidence in a surgeon who is about to operate on me, sporting a ring through his nose or other visible piercings and grotesque tattoos. I accept that much depends upon the climate. In my example of the bank cashier it would not, for instance, be appropriate for a banker to wear a three piece suit during August in the Canarian climate or, indeed, during any part of the year. Call me old fashioned if you like, but I rather like to see people dressing appropriately for their work, and judging from the Zaragoza example, it seems that I am not the only one with this point of view.

I much prefer to see a nurse in a nice smart, starched uniform, wearing one of those crisp little hats that used to be so popular; a little like those worn by Barbara Windsor in the Carry on Nurse film, I guess. It makes the patient feel so much better without even needing any treatment. Sadly, my last experience in hospital was quite unnerving since a very nice, but unshaven young man in a green smock appeared, who I thought was the cleaner, to tell me that he was my anaesthetist. Before I could complain, he had stuck a needle in my arm, which was probably just as well.

Following the death of a stray dog there have now been up to a dozen dead cats found in the Orihuela hamlet of Murada. A spokesman for a local animal charity, Virtues Sanchis, says that during the past 2 months someone has been putting down poison in different parts of the parish and, although they have been informed, the Council has not taken any action. ‘How long before a child is affected,’ she says.

HOT SPOTS REVEALED IN NEW CANCER MAP

esearchers at Spain´s Centro Nacional de Epidemiología have managed to create a “cancer map”, which not only shows where cancer cases are more prevalent, it also shows inequality across the regions. Having analysed one million cancer related deaths over a 20 year period, between 1989 and 2008, the information has now been collated and released, the data reveals certain places which are “hot spots”, and for certain types of cancers. For example the data reveals that the risk of dying from stomach cancer is greater in the Castilla y León, Burgos and Palencia areas, which the experts attribute the increase here to the higher consumption of cured and smoked foods, as well as a lower intake of fruit and vegetables. The president of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology, Esteve Fernández, stresses that the maps show relative risks and are not absolute, “You can have triple the risk of dying from a given cancer risk one area, but the absolute risk remains small. Nobody has to move after seeing these maps”, whilst also reminding everybody that the most dangerous activity is smoking, and thus stopping smoking the best preventative action. The map also sets out the deaths from lung cancer, a total of more than 340,000 in the study period. Areas with higher mortality risk in men are located in Extremadura, western Andalusia (Huelva, Sevilla and Cádiz), Asturias and Cantabria. In women, the greatest risks are in some towns of Pontevedra and Ourense. Although the distribution of lung cancer is related to the number of smokers, the researchers also point to air pollution. In the case of the Galician people, scientists point to Radon, a radioactive gas that originates naturally from uranium underground. Despite its carcinogenic state, the Ministry of Public Works has two years to draft legislation to reduce the impact of Radon, which, according to data, could be present in excessive amounts in over 300,000 buildings in Spain. The epidemiologists also reveal that in places located near to open mines, the risk of colon cancer is 9.7% higher than the rest of the country, with an increase of 6.6% in the risk of death for a lung tumour. Examples of these mines were found in the data in León, Palencia, Teruel, Ciudad Real and Córdoba.

R

Living near to a cement factory apparently carries an additional risk of dying from colorectal cancer, which was shown to have increased by 10% in the case of women, and 7% in the case of men, in villages located more than five kilometres away. For men, the risk of death stomach cancer is also 9% higher. Breast cancer cases showed an interesting shift in the period of examination, with the “hot spots” in the first ten years being in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, which have recently reduced and seen a takeover in the areas of Huelva, Seville and Cadiz, where the risk of dying from breast cancer is now 10% higher than in the rest of Spain. However, although the data should be closely monitored, the experts say, the study of breast cancer mortality is now longer valid, largely due to the amount of attention given to that one type of cancer over recent years, which has resulted in early detection and treatment programs resulting in a survival rate now greater than 80%. The experts say that monitoring of the disease, rather than mortality would be a

more conclusive activity, but no such data exists. The scientists also admit that their data is incomplete, as some condition such as bladder cancer, responsible for more than 77,000 deaths, was not fully monitored until relatively recently. Similarly, in addition to smoking, responsible for 50% of tumours, epidemiologists warn of risk to workers the manufacturing of certain industrial chemicals, such as aromatic amines employed in the production of dyes. They also suffer a high persons engaged in the manufacture of paints, dyes, rubber, leather and aluminium risk as well as truck drivers, possibly from exposure to emissions from diesel engines. One of the most alarming statistics came from the distribution of 105,000 male deaths from prostate cancer. In the first 15 years inequality between the north and south was detected. Galicia was the region with the highest risk, compared to Andalusia which was below the average, “Diabetes may be able to explain the low observed mortality from prostate cancer in Andalusia, since in this region in the period had a much higher mortality rate related to diabetes than in the rest of Spain”. The researcher Miquel Porta, president of the European Federation of Epidemiology and Professor of Public Health at the Medical Research Institute Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, applauds the new cancer map and points directly to the authorities, “I worry that policies will be implemented”, by the government of Spain, as the “intake of fresh fruit and vegetables reduces the risk of stomach cancer and should not become a luxury”, and so economic policy must also “facilitate healthy eating”. The atlas reveals that in the last five years studied, the excess risk of dying from lung cancer in women has focused on cities, which the authors point to “the synergy between air pollution and smoking”. Porta calls on the authorities to take action. “If we see that in the urban centres most lung cancer occurs in women, and we know that there is an interaction between smoking and pollution, the answer is to act on smoking and air pollution, creating more pedestrian spaces and green areas”.

MEDICS FEEL CUT IN CARE

www.yourlocalnewspaper.info

SWEET TREATS UNDER ‘COMPETITION SCRUTINY’ After earlier reports of weather conditions threatening almond crops, the Spanish confectionary market is now facing more dilemmas, after disciplinary proceedings have been confirmed against six of the top turrón manufacturers for alleged market rigging.

ccording to a survey of 600 Spanish medics, 84% believe that cuts to the healthcare budget have led to a loss in the level of care they can give to patients. Details of the survey conducted by the Spanish Society of Primary Care, SEMERGEN, also reveals that 86% believe that the quality of care has deteriorated in the last year, and 60% are pessimistic about the future of primary care in Spain. On the other hand, 66% of respondents say that the current level of care they give is good, with 14% opting to say that the general level across the country is pretty bad. In terms of time allocated to patients, 67% say that

A

they have between 5 and 10 minutes to treat each patient, whereas 18% have to complete their examinations in under 5 minutes. The survey also revealed regional variations on this time. Whilst the time to treat patients may have decreased, the administration has gone the other way, with 47% of medics saying that they have more bureaucratic tasks to complete compared to last year. Meanwhile, 55% say that they have difficulty in accessing new treatments, and 84% recommend the use of online facilities for training and certification of their skills.

TAKE A BREAK Despite being the first Western country to confirm a case of Ebola, the US has asked Spain to grant permission for over 3,000 American soldiers returning from Ebola-stricken West Africa to stay in Spanish military bases at Rota and Morón de la Frontera, so the troops can “rest” before returning to the US. Part of the agreement would be assurances that Spain can prevent the potential spread of the virus amongst the local population.

BACKLASH FEARS

The investigation began in November last year and has resulted in the markets and competition authority confirming that they have discovered “reasonable indications” of violation of competition protection laws, including direct or indirect price fixing, fixing of commercial conditions and the exchange of commercially sensitive information. If found to be true, the allegations could result in the companies having to hand over 10% of their turnover in fines and, given the gravity of the allegations, could result in further action. One of the companies named in the case, Almendra y Miel who are based in Alicante and own some of the industry leading brands such as 1880 and Clair de Lune, have stated that they are fully cooperating with the investigation in order to clarify the facts and to demonstrate that they complied with the law at all times.

African migrants living in Spain are concerned of a possible backlash on account of the spread of Ebola, not only from the general population, but from the authorities. In an interview, Black rights activist Yast Solo says, “It’s already been used to stop immigration, this is the first step”. However, in the headquarters of a help group in Madrid, organisers of aid say that the scare has not yet led to a backlash, as “The Spanish population knows that with immigrants here, there’s as big gap in time and distance from the situation in those three countries: Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea,”.

MOTORWAY TOLL ROAD OUTLOOK IMPROVING The motorway toll road that runs from Alicante to Cartagena, via Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, will not be included in the public motorway company that the Ministry of Public Works is creating in order to rescue the roads at risk of bankruptcy. The reason for this, according to the Minister of Public Works, Ana Pastor, is that this motorway has started to show signs of recovery, due to an increase in use. In the first nine months of this year, traffic has increased by 3.25%, accounting for an average of 18,789 vehicles per day. In January of this year we reported how traffic using Spain´s toll motorway network has dropped by 33.6% in the last seven years, after a record of 23,909 average daily vehicles used the network in 2006. Over that same period, the Alicante area saw a drop of 733%, to 5,293 movements per day. Part of the success of the 76.6 kilometre stretch could well be attributed to the increase in traffic visiting the Zenia Boulevard, but, the result of the increase in that traffic will undoubtedly mean that any calls or requests to remove the tolls in order to alleviate traffic on the N-332 will now be dismissed, on account of the apparent success. The improved outlook has enabled a restructuring of debts and repayments on this motorway. During the winter months, the toll road advertises the cost to travel on the motorway is reduced, which they hope will encourage more drivers to choose the quieter and faster option.

YOUR TELEVISION HIGHLIGHTS ast week we were talking about technology a Little, if you remember, when we discussed how kids can take part in a competition to design an application for use on tablet computers. Well, this week we have another hidden gem from the technological world, one for those who like medical dramas in particular, as Casualty launched the first of two special webisodes this week. Ideas for these internet based mini shows were submitted by the junior editorial team, but it was team researcher Ross Southard who was victorious with his pitch entitled ‘Radio Holby’, which focuses on on Noel (played by Tony Marshall) who has always dreamt of being a radio DJ, and thinks now is the perfect time to give his dreams flight, after the recent death of their colleague, Jeff (Matt Bardock). Part 1 is available now on the official Casualty website, with part two on-line after this Saturday´s TV show. Fans of a more rural outlook from teleland will be pleased to know that Countrywise returns for a

L

Countrywise Returns

brand-new series, taking viewers on an energetic and investigative look at the best of Britain’s coast and countryside. Farming and agricultural expert Paul Heiney, intrepid adventurer Ben Fogle and wildlife biologist Liz Bonnin travel the length and breadth of Britain to discover the countryside’s best stories and key issues. In the first episode, which airs on Monday the 27 October on ITV, Paul Heiney visits the stunning Gower peninsular to find out how Salt Marsh lamb gets its distinctive flavour. Meanwhile, Liz Bonnin is in Lancashire to find out what we can all do to help give nature a home, and Ben Fogle heads to Northern Ireland where he gets to grips with a horse that’s more suited to the Wild West. We stay in the countryside for our drama highlight this week, as the BBC has announced that Samantha Morton has been cast as Annie Lee in Cider With Rosie, which will air next year . Jessica Hynes plays Miss Crabby; June Whitfield plays Granny Wallon and Annette Crosbie plays Granny Trill. Cider With Rosie is an evocative coming-ofage story, set in an idyllic Cotswold village, during and immediately after the Great War. Marking the journey of young Lol as he grows from boy to man, the story chronicles first love, loss and family upheaval. Lol’s boyhood escapades take place in a rural world as yet untouched by electricity and cars - a place suspended between history and modernity. Samantha Morton says: “I am thrilled to have taken on the role of Annie Lee in BBC One’s adaptation of Cider With Rosie as it is one of my favourite books.” As for ITV, filming commenced this week on a riv-

eting three-part thriller Black Work starring Sheridan Smith, Matthew McNulty, Douglas Henshall, Geraldine James and Phil Davis. Written by Matt Charman, who was also responsible for Our Zoo, shed light on his inspiration for the drama, saying, “Sheridan Smith is a dream to write for because as an actress there’s really nothing she can’t do. And Black Work is a story that pushes her to the limit – it makes her character, Jo Gillespie doubt herself, her family, her friends, everything she’s always taken for granted in her search for her husband’s killer.” Sheridan plays police woman Jo Gillespie whose world is thrown into turmoil when husband Ryan, an undercover policeman, is shot dead in mysterious circumstances. She resolutely sets out to discover who murdered him and has to confront difficult truths about her family life and her marriage to Ryan. Over on Channel 5, following the success of the shocking and thought-provoking observational film My Violent Child, the station has commissioned a further three documentaries that will look even deeper into this challenging subject. The series exposes the hidden world of child-on-parent violence and follows families’ journeys as they struggle to cope with their children’s behavioural issues. The violent outbursts, captured through a mix of fixed rigs and observational filming, show a hidden world of angry and aggressive children and parents struggling to cope. The families are filmed as they and their children receive different forms of help and parents are forced to ask themselves, what could they be doing differently? Finally, on a lighter note, Quiz show fans have

something new to look forward to in a couple of weeks, broadcasting on Saturday night of the 25 of October, with one of the nation’s favourite faces, Bradley Walsh, hosting a brand new show, Keep It In The Family. For the first show of the series, six stars from the hit TV soap Emmerdale will be joining Bradley in the studio as they prepare to face the dreaded drop. Each week three generations of rival families battle head-to-head, through a series of hilarious games, for incredible prizes.

Bradley Walsh Keeping it In The Family I almost forgot that I promised you more about Scorpion this week, a drama inspired by a true story of a team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, high-tech threats of the modern age. Well, it starts this week on ITV 2 and sees a crisis at LAX airport leaving dozens of airplanes unable to land, and so the nerdy masterminds are called upon to save the day, using their exceptional brainpower to solves the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in.

NEW VALENCIA LAW (LEY 5/2014, L.O.T.U.P) CHANGES THE MINIMUM TIME FROM 4 TO 15 YEARS TO LEGALISE BUILDING WORKS by Martinez de la Casa Architects This new law which became applicable on the 20th August of this year greatly affects the international community in Alicante. Up until now, any building, extension or pool could be legalised or it's description updated in the Title Deeds and afterwards registered in the Land Registry once it was 4 years old (with the exception of protected / special areas / inhabilitating participation quotas in Deeds). The only document needed was an Antiquity Certificate stating the building was over 4 years old. FROM NOW ON THIS PERIOD HAS EXTENDED TO 15 YEARS. Fortunately many of the Land Registries will still register (and thereby legalise) all extensions, pools or buildings done within a minimum of four years BEFORE this new law was established. Please note EVERY LAND REGISTRY NOW HAS DIFFERENT CRITERIAS SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ENQUIRE AT YOUR ASSIGNED LAND REGISTRY BEFORE TRYING TO LEGALISE OR UPDATE AN EXTENSION THAT WAS DONE WITHOUT THE CORRECT LICENSE.

Therefore, all extensions made in LESS THAN 4 years BEFORE May 2014 cannot be registered until 15 years old. For example Orihuela's Land Registry (#1), is only registering extensions and/or pools in properties with Antiquity Certificates issued before August 20th. The rest of the process remains the same; needing an ANTIQUITY CERTIFICATE done by an Architect, at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property, such as pools or extensions done with or without a license. In the case of having done an extension or pool without a license, the

Antiquity Certificate, sometimes also called “retrospective licence”, is also very useful to guard against possible sanctions/fines, and to prove the building works were done at least four years before this new law being applicable. As a result it's highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of unregistered buildings even if done with a license, to have your Antiquity Certficate ready. And in the case that registration is not possible, the Antiquity Certificate serves to offer any potential buyer the maximum possible security against Townhall penalties. If for your peace of mind and to have certified that your extension/pool was done before the implementation of this new law, you then wish to have your Antiquity Certificate issued, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the pool/extension requiring only your NIE and current Title Deeds. Later using satelitte images and software we check the age of the pool/extension (pictured is an example used in the process for Antiquity Certification) and combine this with the measurements and documentation taken during our on-site visit. Martinez de la Casa Architects will enquire on your behalf at the Land Registry to check if registration is allowed with regards to this new law. The Antiquity Certificate is stamped by the Official College of Architects and delivered within 7-10 days. The applicant can then either update and register the Title Deeds, or wait for change of Property Titleholder's at the Notary. Due to the surge in requests for Antiquity Certificates, Martinez de la Casa Arquitects has been able to greately reduce prices in the areas affected by this new law (Alicante), therefore the price of a Pool Antiquity Certificates are now at 190 €+IVA, and for Extensions plus Pool, or for the complete property, we can now offer the Antiquity Certificate at 270 €+IVA. The only condition in Alicante is that the building/pool to certify was built 4 years before the 20th August 2014. If your solicitors are working on your case, ask them to contact us to provide the Antiquity Certificate and we will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper for you. Testimonial “Many thanks for undertaking the work on the two certificates which I needed for my villa (Pool Antiquity Certificate & Energy Certification) within the time schedule agreed, at an extremely competitive price and without any communication issues. I would definitely recommend your services to anyone who requires work of this

nature undertaking.” Mr A J Pyle of Zurgena Area. Martinez de la Casa Architects has experience in over 300 Antiquity Certificates and is one of the most prominent and respectable practises in the area, providing all types of Certificates and Licenses, amongst other services. They are the Number 1 company in EPC certificates (121€ inc IVA) in Murcia, Almeria, Alicante and likewise Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates. See over 100 reviews on their services or call on 665 810 411 if you want to arrange an appointment to have your Antiquity Certificate done (including free consultation and review of paperwork): www.martinezdelacasa.com Pictured: Satellite image example for Antiquity Certification.

1st INTERNATIONAL TRAVESIA "CABO DE PALOS" 2014 Last weekend, Masters swimmers from “Club Natacion Torrevieja” travelled to the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse on the Mar Menor to participate in the “1st International Travesia Cabo de Palos”. The event hosted by “Club Natacion Masters Murcia” had entries from over 300 swimmers ,on the day 279 swimmers participated in the race. The race originally planned to circumnavigate the headland around the lighthouse a distance of 3 km but due to prevailing wind conditions on the headland, the race was re-organised to a direct swim to and from the lighthouse a distance of 2600 m. European Champion and world runner up in open water swimming Margarita Dominguez Cabezas was guest swimmer in the race and took the overall 1st place in the event. The rest of the competition was categorised by the normal National Swimming Federations Masters categories and ranking for the

local competitors. Both Torrevieja swimmers Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly won 1st place in their categories and Vicki came 2nd in the local competitors rankings, second only to the European swimmer Margarita. Beth being the oldest swimmer in the event was by no means the slowest placed 202 out of the 279 swimmers that finished the race. Vicki was placed 7th of all female swimmers and 49th out of the total 279, both male and female. 180´s: Peter Ayres (Porter House), Pat Abrams (Meerkats) Highest finish: 112 Jim Scott (Junction Jackals), 130 Pat Abrams (Meerkats), 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) Early days in the season with no draws to date in Division 2 and then four come along at once, giving the Ale House and Misfits their first points, the Tavern and Breakaways losing their 100% record. Porter House had the Meerkats on the rack this week leading 4-5 and making as much noise as an Old Trafford crowd at home. It was however within the realms of acceptable darts etiquette as you would expect from the Porters. I must say Ray Sanderson´s outfit look very smart in their new shirts but where did they get them from, probably from Del Trotter as you will notice they are the same colour as the luminous paint Del boy re-decorated his local Chinese in. Busters look good this time round, this week´s win moves them into second spot. Mark Filer got them off to a flyer taking out D16 after two tons. Gary Minor 100 and Eddie Fozzard 121 plus a double levelled for Pint Depot. Another ton from Minor and one from Matt Cummins looked likely for a Depot lead after three but Filer 100, Paul Gurrie 119 set up Bill Russell to take out the double and the lead. Minor continued his form with a 140 and 81, Paul Dowington countering with 100 and Ray Harvey nailing D3. Gurrie added 121 to his tally in the second pairs, but Cummins hit the double plus a ton of his own. Peter O´Rourke made it 2-4 at half time finishing D8, scoring 81 and a ton. The Kings added just one more leg through Cummins winning 2-0, Busters taking the other 5. Filer added a 120, O´Rourke a 140. Meerkats knew they would have a game on their hands against the Porters. Captain Ray Sanderson´s smart move in signing Sid Cross has given his side a little edge so don’t be surprised if they finish in the top 3. The Kats got away to their customary quick start Pat Abrams 125, Lee Maiden and Derek Kingsbury assisting well, the latter finding D6 for the first. Paul Durrant´s D16 after a nice 125 made

it 2 up in just 11 minutes. It looked a good bet for 3-0 after Abrams hit 100,140,99, but tons from Sanderson and Cross followed by the double from the new boy was to be pivotal in the match. Cross 100 was on again in the first pairs with Ray Hayes, the scoring tit for tat until Abrams requiring 130 found 2xT20 and then D5 right in the middle for a comfortable 3-1 lead. The Sandersons paired up for the next, Paul contributing a ton but then busting 114 after miscounting. It would have been a wonderful out T20,D16,D16 for 124, but its 501 Paul not 511. No problem however for Ray as he hit D12. A 140 from Kat skipper Kingsbury was equalled in the last pair by Brian Nash whose partner Peter Ayres held his own with a 121 and D4 for 3 apiece. Hayes took the middle leg of 3 playing Abrams who scored 125, 2x140 and numerous 80 pluses in the three, winning in 18 and 19 darts. Hayes no slouch himself hit 3x100 and was unfortunate to have three bounce outs in the third leg. Paul Sanderson 2x100, 99, levelled with a 2-0 result versus Alex Nikolov. Kingsbury´s 100,140 in the next was insufficient against Cross who made it 4-5 on D10 and D8. Durrant levelled against Nash, the former scoring 2x100,1x140,2x85 finishing on 58 (S18,D20) and D8. Maiden edged the Kats ahead after a 140 and 100 securing the leg and draw on D20 and D8 despite a spirited effort from Ayres 133. Who else but the skipper to save the match in the final leg, although he nearly let it slip after opponent Alan Ostrowski had managed a 140 and ton. Sanderson wobbled just a little bit but not enough as D16 and D1 levelled the match for shared points. Great game, banter and the usual good humour. Gogarty´s opened their account courtesy of Steve Woods D16 on their visit to the Jackals from the Junction. This was soon wiped out by Keith King D5 and then the larger than life Jim Scott´s 112 out (S20,T20,D16). Elaine Willis levelled on D3 after setting up the finish on T17. King D16 edged the Jackals in front again leaving Andy Gildea to make it 4-2 at the break. Scott was first on in the singles and finished 185 in 5 darts, 125 followed by S20,D20 and then D10 for 52. Richard Pattison got the Bulls back to winning ways with a 2-0 on D20,D10 TWICE. What a showman! Brian Newton D14 took just the one leg against Gildea whose 100,D20,99,D15 ensured one point for the Jackals. Cynthia Jevons gave the Bulls a chance of a point winning 2-1 for 6-4, however Phil de Lacy D8 and D14 gained the extra point leaving Kenny Wilkinson to make it 8 on D14 and D17. Jim Scott was nominated man of the match. Breakaways entertained the Junction Jaguars and kept their unbeaten status with a deserved draw. The hosts were 3-0 up in no time despite some heavy scoring, but no doubles, from Pat Schofield, Wendy Hayward and Angela Craggs. In an amazing turn around it was 3 apiece at half time despite some great scoring from the Bears´ Sarah Simpson, Mike Douglas 100, Mike Snow 100,85 and Ivan Jones 140.

Hayward D18, Lisa Ivill D5 and Hilda Wilkinson D5 making the Jaguars proud. Del Lister 85,140,D20 gave the hosts a slender lead. Snowy must have thought his 3x80 pluses were enough against Schofield who wanted 158 with the Bear comfortably in front expecting to set up the double. Not so, 20 seconds later the leg was over, T20,T20,D19 for a magnificent 158 out from Schofield. That will take some beating. Calling Abrams, Filer, Walker and Co. to beat that! Jones D14 and then Sarah Simpson found some good form to ensure the draw on D20. It fell on Tracy Simpson to retrieve the situation for Jaguars and in a true captain´s role she squared the match for a valuable point finding D3 after a ton and 3x80 pluses. In the remaining Division 2 matches the partnership of Leah Chesworth and Karl Cooper did the Sporting Life Misfits proud. Cooper top scored for the hosts with a 140, whilst Chesworth faced Brett Badlove in the 12th leg to either lose or take a point in a draw. The draw was the outcome, the Misfits beauty finding D16 to earn her side a point. Incidentally the original placing of the dart board near the staircase in the main bar of Sporting Life has now been moved upstairs, where Karl Cooper has done a great job in setting up a very nice oche and space ideal for private parties. John Graziour had a tasty 80 out T20,D10 in the first leg for the Taverners, playing host to the Ale House. It was 4-2 at half time to the home side and a close encounter. Ian Brown contributed 140. Barry Whipday saved the day for the Ale House on D8 to earn Karl Mallinson´s side their first point of the season. Shared spoils once again in the final match of the week featuring newcomers Evolution against the Royalty of Pint Depot. Her most Royal Queen Debbie, was up to her tricks again this week hitting a fine 165 (T20,T18,T17) unfortunately she only wanted 145. Can´t work that one out! They however won the first, Lorraine Cox gaining the double. It was soon 0-2 via Marie Dunne on D7. John Williams pulled one back for Evolution on D14. Ken Treble levelled for the hosts in the first pair, only for the Queens to nudge ahead through Anne O´Keeffe on D5. Some good scoring from both sides in the final pair culminated in Vi Turner increasing the Royals lead at half time to 24. Treble reduced the deficit in the opening single after a tasty 121, only for Rachel Broadhead to open the gap to two legs on D5. Trevor Laughton D8 made it 4 legs for the hosts only for Queen Debbie to ensure the draw and point on D2. Needing both legs to salvage the match, Debbie Williams found D2 after Cox had missed her opportunity on D16. Captain Williams faced Turner in the last leg and threw well 80,100 and a 70 out (T10,D20) to earn a draw and points apiece. Paul Durrant, League Chairman

ESTRELLA DAMM CRIBBAGE By Ron Sheldon Week 6 on 13th October and we have the top 5 teams unchanged with the top team scoring the biggest win. Also 2 teams scored their 1st win – The Peacocks and the Jays, well done. At the top Dorothy’s Magpies had the 8-1 win over Steve’s unfortunate Steakhouse and for the Magpies only Stewart & Jane dropped a game while Les & Jean were the only scorers for Steakhouse The next best score of 7-2 achieved by Les’s Jays against Catorce gave them their 1st win with Dave & Les W maximising on 3, while for John’s Catorce Paul & Phil died with a zero score. Also getting their 1st win was Mike’s Peacocks in a tight finish against Alan’s Robins who had Alan & Joe topping it with 3 wins while for the Peacocks 2 pairs had 2 wins each. Up at Lo Crispin, Brian’s away team Jaguars had a fine win with Basil & Shelagh grossing with 3 wins leaving the 3 Lo Crispin pairs with only 1 win each. In the Casa Ventura it was a sad night after my Falcons were winning 4-0 only to lose 4-5 to Ayliff’s Galea “A” warriors who had 2 pairs on 2 wins each while Gill & myself matched them with 2 wins. At Ebony & Ivory, Keith’s Merlins just dipped out against Ron’s Nachos Voles whose best were Norman & Derek with 3 wins, while Merlins best were Jan & Brian with 2 wins. In The Meson, Brian’s Galea “B” just missed out against Peter’s 2nd placed Galleon who had 2 pairs with 2 wins each while the Meson also had 2 pairs with 2 points each. Over at La Siesta, Jim’s Sharks were bitten by Richard’s Ospreys for whom Richard & Molly enjoyed their 3 wins while Anne-Marie & Hilary scored zero for the Sharks. CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY In a first for this society we, unfortunately, had to turn people away as the course at La Serena was fully booked so we could not get any extra tee times and still 4 players went to Torre Pacheco to play the par 3 course. As for those that did start, the course was in its usual good condition and the pace of play was very good considering the number of people playing. Scoring was good with 16 players getting 30 points or more and for once nobody scored less than 23 points. Results were as follows:

Nearest the pin on holes 9 and 17 was George Thomas. Nearest the par 4 13th in 2 was Colin Capper. Longest Drive on hole 18 was Kenny Forrest. Winner with 38 points on count back was Dave Somerville who just pipped Roy Welburn. A reminder to all that our Poppy Day Appeal meeting will be held on 13th November at Vistabella, please make every effort to attend. Next week we are at Font del Llop meet at the bar at 08:00.

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN L/R Simon Williams, Gill Damjanovic, Paul Durrant, Shaun Smith

A fine performance from Simon Williams at Hacienda del Alamo elevated the Hub´s licensee and Society´s captain to top spot in the Grand Prix. Williams scored a healthy 35 stableford points at the near 7,500 yard desert course, to go one point in front of leader Dave Lethaby with one event to go. 2013 Grand Prix champion Paul Durrant found a little consistency this time out for third place to go 4 points off the lead 3 behind Lethaby. Joint 4th spot is shared between Simon Lee and John Eyre who were both off the pace this time out slipping several points behind the top three. But with 15 points at stake in the final event it could still all change for the top five, however, Lethaby remains the favourite Williams joint second favourite with Durrant. With prizes down to 8th place in the Grand Prix, the Hub´s Annual Presentation Nov 5th fireworks are expected after the last summer event. Just the four birdies on the day, one from Shaun Smith on the 377yd, Par 4 3rd. Another from Williams business partner Cam McHardy on the 215yd, Par 3 5th and the third on the 219yd, 8th, Par 3 from Paul Durrant whose tee shot landed 4 inch-

es from a hole in one. Husband and wife team the Damjanovics´ figured well on the day, Nick claiming 29 points but Gill going 5 better to win the best guest prize sponsored by PJs Rentacar. Nick however should have had an eagle on the Par 5 18th after his second shot landed 3 feet from the pin. Nerves obviously got the better of him, as his fourth shot was still 3 feet away but now the other side of the pin. No problem next time for the fourth birdie of the day, still claiming the NTP in 3. The Hubbers last summer event takes place on Sunday October 26th at Font De Llop, players wishing to play to include guests, should register at the Hub as soon as possible. The Society´s winter league is expected to commence in December and run to February, anyone wishing to participate should apply at the Hub. Results: N.T.P´s:Hole 3 (in 2) John Williams, Hole 12 Colin Wilson, Hole 18 (in 3) Nick Damjanovic PJ Rentacars - Best Guest: 1st Gill Damjanovic 34 pts, 2nd Phil de Lacy 30 pts Grand Prix: 1st Simon Williams 34 pts, 2nd Shaun Smith 32 pts, 3rd Paul Durrant 30 pts

SPANISH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 The Spanish Nationals Committee are pleased to announce that for the year 2015 the National Championships will once again be in the South Alicante area from 9th to 23rd May 2015. The Nationals Committee discussed the possibility of the Championships being held in the Malaga, Costa del Sol,

region in 2016 and the National Director, John Muldoon and Federation Espana de Bolos executive council member, Bob Donnelly will be visiting Malaga in the near future to discuss this with the clubs and owners. Clubs in the South Alicante region have been invited to nominate their greens for this event.

EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB Emerald Isle V Preston Bowling club (15/10) After all the excitement of Valencian Championships it was back to reality as the E.I. Played host to the Preston B.C. Who are in Spain on a two week Tour. They are used to playing on grass and found our greens quite difficult, ( they were due to play El Rancho the next day.!!) we played 5 games of rinks & the E.I. won by 4 rinks to one and 111 points to 49, it was a comfortable victory partly due to Preston having to adjust to our carpet, but they were a very pleasant team to play against & we hope to meet again. Thanks to Reg Fooks for organising this match. Our winners were: 1. Sandra Kavanagh, Don Martin, Ted Eldred, & skip Keith Jolliffe (20-

9). 2. Robin Adams, Dave Close, Alan Howcroft & skip Jim Mulloy (32-4). 4. Marrion Willicott, John Pooley, Peter Willicott, & skip Brian Kavanagh.(24-11) 5. Maria Brookes, Alex Fay, Sheila Wickens, & skip Barbara Eldred (21-7). Well played everyone. Last week I forgot to mention two very important people, Dave & Liam our two favourite barmen who have kept us all well watered, in particular Dave, who never stops smiling & has a friendly word for everyone. Keep the faith & enjoy the game. Robin (the scribe) Adams.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB As the leagues enter their first week we look forward to a season of making new friends and playing old ones, improving our play and confidence, with an awful lot of good fun. The result was a complete whitewash for the Oaks. Every team member was an Ace so no names but the team is roughly the same as the Winter Leaguers; they just play a lot better with a third wood !! The Cedars played host to La Siesta on Friday afternoon and managed to fashion a loss out of some very promising starts. The numbers were: 3 rinks to La Siesta & 2 to Greenlands with one rink drawn. Overall shots went to La Siesta.

La Siesta Bowls Report By Norman Adcroft Today, Friday the 17th Oct saw the start of the CBBA Southern League fixtures and as chance would have it all three of our teams, the Blues, the Golds and the Silvers were matched against Greenlands, with the Blues and Silvers travelling to Greenlands and the Golds having a morning home match against the Elms. The Blues played their game against the Oaks and sad to say nil points for us. Our only ‘near miss’ was George Richardson, Brian Gardiner with Yours Truly who led all the way and were one shot up, 1617, going into the last end holding two when the Oaks Skip Steve Westall with his last wood edged the jack sideways to two of their woods to give them the two shots they needed to win. A true ‘skips shot’ bowled under pressure. Well done Steve. In contrast to the Blues the Silvers had a great first game of the season away against the Greenland Cedars, winning on three rinks, drawing one and losing on two. Our Winners were, Jean James, Les Rawson, and Dave Laverick 29-7, Irene Laverick, Beryl Styring and Irene Mangan 24-13 and Ann

Edgerton, Tom Dalton and Alex Morrice 17-14. Our drawn rink was Penny and John Porter with John Lincoln 15-15. Shots were 87-117 giving the Silvers a respectable 9-5 win. Well done team keep it going. The Golds had a morning home game against the Greenlands Elms and although they fared better than the Blues they didn’t reach the heights of the Silvers. Winning just one rink and drawing another and not surprisingly losing the shots 75-106 we only picked up three points. Our winners were, Jo Elkin with Pat and Vic Moore 16-14, and our drawn rink, Izzy and Bert Bell with Carol Thorpe18-18. Well done to our friendly Wyn Kirton with Dawn and John Taylor 21-10. ‘Mike Probert talks Golf (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Closure of Corvera Golf & Country Club’ Two months ago I reported the demise and closure of Corvera Golf and Country Club prompted mainly by debts to the Spanish tax authorities and a failure to obtain regular water supplies to keep the fairways in a playable condition. A local private web-site forum has recently posted the following information in respect of the latest developments on the Corvera site: “Today there was a new development when this morning the Police arrived with a Court order and a repossession company and took away all of the commercial machinery for the course including mowers, tractors, etc. All of the equipment needed to maintain the course, around seven low loaders worth. The green keepers have been working normal hours however now they will not be able to" From the above I think that we can safely say that like Mosa Trajectum and La Tercia before them Corvera Golf & Country Club will now return to the Murcian desert it was before the developers moved into the area. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. TMGS MATCH REPORT AT LAS RAMBLAS One this day in history in 1917, Mata Hari, the archetype of the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad at Vincennes outside of Paris. Today at the Marmite course we had our 2 Ball Texas Scramble and 18 teams battled it out on a nice warm day and it must be said that the course was in very good condition with the greens a little on the slow side, but all in all not in bad condition. Handiaps were reduced to 20% of the joint handicap per team. Only 3 of the 4 NTP’s were claimed and their reward was a sleeve of TMGS golf balls which went to Alex Goslan, Ole Rong and Matt Taylor. The Best Visitors team were Father and Son

team of Elden Carey and his Dad T Carey with a net 74.2 The main competition saw Tove Roed and Alan Rickers take 3rd place with 74.2, and when asked, Tove requested a translator the next time she paired up with Cuddly from Dudley. The runners-up, Arne Hansson and Claudio Torres went round in a credible nett 69.8 and were only just beaten by the winners; Steve Higgins and Matthew Taylor whose 1 over gross and nett score of 69.4 saw them take the top slot, again. Photo: Winning Team Our next game, Wednesday 22nd October 2014, see’s us at Villamartin golf course so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Fixture Secretary on 966719604.

WOLFPACK G.S. CAPTAINS DAY - 14th OCTOBER AT ALENDA...BL Eddie Rabbitt loved a rainy night, now that´s alright for rainy days and mondays but this was early on Tuesday morning and we had an important competition to play. The coach left El Galan and Guelmo, our driver said “it´s raining again”, very impressive we thought as he doesn’t speak a word of English. Mind you, some of our U.K. nationals struggle. Is this coach weather proof a voice was heard to say from the back because rain drops keep falling on my head. Oh stop complaining was the reply it´s not purple and even if it rains on our parade we´ll be singing and dancing through it. Well it did stop raining and Alenda proved as challenging as ever for our international field with players having jetted in from Nottingham, Durham. Aberdeen, Chorley, Holmfirth, Luterworth and Dubai to partake in the event. One competitor, Graham Moore, drove the 2000 + kms from West Yorkshire to be with us. A post competition feast followed at the Coopers Arms in Dona Pepa where the prizes were distributed as follows :Nearest the pins (3) Dan Connolly; (6) Ray Phillips; (13) Peter Palmer; (16) Alan Hill. The best guest prize went to the land of the Prince Bishops in the shape of Vince Graham. In fourth place with 31 points and on his birthday too, Dave Pope. In third place, also with 31 points, Graham Moore. In second place with 32 points, Sweden´s finest, Lars Tigerburg. The winner with 35 points, not sure if it´s within the R&A rules, the b------ Captain. Photos of Dave Pope & Graham Moore receiving their prizes.

THE CELTS CLUB DE GOLF PRESIDENT'S GOLF DAY AND DINNER. The Celts Club de Golf held their President's golf day at their home club La Serena on Sunday 12th October. This was followed by a dinner at the El Prado Restaurant in San Miguel. The golf day went all to plan, with 46 Celt members and their guests enjoying the facilities at La Serena. Our thanks go to Wayne and his green staff for making sure the golf course was in top condition. We would also like to thank the staff of La Serena for their normal kind courtesy on the day. The sun was shining but very windy, hence the scoring was not up to normal standard, nobody scored under their handicap, this was very unusual as we have had in the past winners with 46 points and on occasions players with 40 points not getting a look in. The overall winner on the day winning the President's prize was Harry Lee, in 2nd. place our President John O'Brien, 3rd Terry Lewis. In cat. 1 the winner was Jim Hayes, 2nd. Eddie Wall and in 3rd. place Alisdair McLean. Cat 2 winners were 1st. John Lawrence 2nd. Chriss Fyfe. and 3rd. Meta Vale. The winner of the net score was Denis McCormack. NTPs were Logan Nayager. Alisdair McLean. Sue Kirkpatrick. Geoff Ellender. and Dave Cosson. The visitor's prise went to Siobhan O'Brien. The Celt members would also like to congratulate our President John O'Brien in becoming a member of the General Assembly of the Comunidad de Valencia de Golf. This is a great honour for John and for the Celts in general. We had over 70 people at the dinner in the evening, which was subsided by the Celts de Golf. An excellent meal was had by all at the El

Prado, a restaurant well worth a visit if you are ever in San Miguel area. The Celts Club de Golf are now over 70 in membership and always looking for new members. Some 55 members of the Celts are also members of La Serena, should you wish to join us to see how we are, please feel free to contact our President John O'Brien on 965076758 or 615466398 email:- johnobrienalicante@gmail.com He will be most pleased to discuss the Celts with you.

But, fans don't have to wait long to watch their favourites in action, for next Sunday 26 October, ko 5pm, Castellon visit Vicente Garcia Stadium. Last Saturday, in front of 1,500 home fans, Castellon drew 2-2 with Cullera. With Torry currently having amassed 14 points, and Castellon 13, both teams are within touching distance of the play offs. Manager Galliana must be hoping for more of the same as that of the exciting 2-0 victory over Ontinyent, Torry's last league match. The new CD Torrevieja shirts will be available before the match, priced 25 euros, from a stall just inside the ground. Due to the desire to further his education, young midfielder Jordi has left the club.

The Imanyo Golf Society is a new free society formed by a group of friends in Daya Nueva. We played our first cup competition, the José Domingo García Gallud Memorial Cup, on 9th October at Marquesa golf course. We had a good turn out by players for our first competition, the weather was hot and the course was set to its maximum limits with the tees right back, greens and fairways in good condition. A good time was had by all with the presentation held at Imanyo Disco Bar, in Daya Neuva, with Antonio García Gallud and his Dad Antonio García Gea presenting the cup to Chris Baillie in memory of his brother, José Domingo García Gallud, who sadly passed away in July 1996. The Endeavour award was won by Ian Newton 9 points, the runner up was won by Alex Porteous on 27 points and the winner was Chris Baillie on 28 points. MISS AFTER MISS BUT THE POINTS ARE ALL DAYA'S

Newly appointed manager García Tébar left Orihuela on Monday following the club’s 1-0 defeat to bottom of the table Jove. The defeat leaves Orihuela ninth, three points behind the playoff positions. The Albacete born coach told club President, Antonio Felices, that he was frustrated by Orihuela’s poor start to the season and particularly disappointed by their worst display of the season in their recent defeat. Nevertheless the President said that the announcement had come as somewhat of a surprise especially Tebar’s declaration of his intention to embark on a new project abroad. Felices said that he will now take urgent steps to find a new coach who will need to know the Tercera División well and have a reputation of coaching teams that play attractive football.

The newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca is starting training on Guardamar beach from 19.30 on Monday and Wednesday. Everyone is welcome to come along whether you have or do not have experience all are welcome.

Garcia Tebar quit Orihuela after just 8 games

SUDOKU SOLUTION

The decision to do this was made at the clubs first meeting on Friday night, until we manage to get a permanent ground to play and train on, on these nights, so if anybody can help with this please contacts us. The club is based on good old fashioned traditional ethics of the game of RESPECT and family values, socialising after the training and not just disappearing like with other clubs in the area. We will be having all ages training from juniors through to vets and with qualified coaches. The aim of the club is to enter as many of the 7’s tournaments in the new year and get enough players to entertain touring teams that are coming over. Also hopefully enter the league next season. We have already been invited to play friendlies from local teams in the area, so a good start to the club. So looking forward to seeing plenty of people down at Guradamar beach on Monday night in front of the restaurants. For more information contact Saul on 634 042 913 or Dutch on 692 767 242 or come and see me at Zoco market on Sunday, third row in from the main road at the far end.

Jacarilla......2 Daya Nueva.....4 Cadetes, Alicante 2a The first game of the new season sees Daya with no home pitch but work has started on replacing the surface with a synthetic artificial grass. So for a few months perhaps we should call them the Daya Nomads. It was all Daya from the start and Marcos had a good chance within the first minute to open the scoring. Chance after chance went begging for the visitors, then on 10 minutes Hugo blasted home from close range to open the scoring for the visitors. As the half wore on Daya continued to clock up many more easy chances missed ! On 35 minutes Hugo made it 2 - 0 with a neat headed goal from a corner to make it a more respectable scoreline at half time and probably ending any hope the home side had of getting anything from the game. The second half began with yet another good chance missed by the visitors, then on 43 minutes the unthinkable happened, Jacarilla scored, on the first occasion they had been in the Daya penalty area ! So now what would happen ? Would Daya start scoring from their continuing chances or could Jacarilla raise their own game ? The answer was yes when a high speculative lob left Danni in the Daya goal stranded for a 2 - 2 scoreline on 65 minutes. Just a minute later though it was 3 - 2 Daya when Jose Gregorio scrambled the ball over the goal line. The home side were still pushing forward and on 75 minutes from a fierce free kick Danni made a fabulous stop to keep the visitors in front. In the final few minutes Daya were denied a certain penalty when Carlos was bowled over in the area. Mind you given the way Daya were shooting today they would almost certainly have missed. On the stroke of full time Marcos had the easiest of chances when the keeper presented him with a wide open goal that even Marcos couldn't and didn't miss. So 4 - 2 final score. I have never seen such a one sided game especially in the first half, Daya could and should have doubled their goal tally. Jacarilla took their two chances well and made a much better game of it in the second half. The referee did not have to run about a lot he just had to stand in the home side's half because that is where 90% of the play was. It was a good spirited game but oh those many many missed chances. Still it is 3 points away from home so well done Daya. Man of the match, all of us who had to sit through those squandered chances. Daya Dave.......Team Sponsor: Segurlab
