COR VERA MAY SEE APRIL FLIGHTS

The European Union has extended their consultation time on deciding the outcome of Corvera airport by another month. Compensation to the airport authority AENA for their investment in San Javier is believed to be the only remaining hurdle in opening the new Murcia regional airport. Meanwhile, plans to open the new transport hub continue, with what is expected to be the penultimate operational test having been carried out this week, as the State Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) sent a group of tech-

nicians to find and check the condition of all facilities for the purpose of certifying the operation of the new airport. A total of 7 technicians visited the site, in a combined operation by AESA, SENASA, which deals with aviation training, consultation and technical assistance towards aviation safety and the environment, and INECO, a global leader in transport engineering and consultancy. The team visited every facility at the airport managed by Sacyr, and have concluded in their report that they have found no impediment that prevents the new Corvera airport functioning normally, thus paving the way for a final inspection before the airport can open. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 In addition to checking the status of all the facilities, the technicians also carried out a variety of tests in order to check the response times to potential emergencies at all points in the facility, including the most distant, ensuring a maximum response time of less than 3 minutes. In these tests, the private company contracted to carry out fire fighting and emergency rescue procedure responded well within the maximum time, with a response time of just 2.25 and 2.30 minutes.

annual meeting is one of IATA's largest events. The goal of the conference is for airlines and airports to obtain the slots that will give them the best possible schedule to offer their customers. The flight “slots” being allocated in the IATA conference are from April to September, 2015. Should Corvera not be able to present itself at this next conference, the airport would have to wait until the next available session, which will be held from the 23rd of June, 2015, in Vancouver, Canada, or even next autumn in the November 2015

It was therefore concluded in the report that with the final test still pending, so far everything is looking favourable, and a theoretical date for opening has been given as of April, 2015, depending on the ruling of the European Union. With a potential date now in mind, it is expected that the airport will be presented at the next international travel agency event held by the IATA association, which is set to take place from the 11th to the 15th of November in Prague. With nearly 1000 delegates, from over 200 airlines and representatives of over 60 schedules-facilitated or fully coordinated airports, this semi-

conference being held in Bangkok, Thailand. Missing out on this next crucial bidding event could force the airport management to carry on with their plan to open, irrespective of the pending decision from Europe, a decision which is likely to end in only one of two ways, the first option being that there is no case to answer, the second being that compensation must be awarded for the construction of the second runway at San Javier, thus resulting in nothing but a financial burden, rather than an operational restriction. Many still argue that it will not be possible to close San Javier as passengers already have flights

booked into the summer of next year, but one only has to look at how quick action was taken in closing Blackpool airport in the UK, with flights diverted within days, some with only hours notice, and, although a very different reason, that argument cannot be held in balance. Local coordinator of the IUVerdes group, José Antonio Pujante, believes that it is “highly doubtful and it makes no sense” that the Competition Tribunal of the European Union would approve the opening of Corvera, as it is so close to the commercial airports at San Javier and Alicante-Elche, but with San Javier set to close, Corvera is further away than Alicante-Elche. A report of the European Commission approved the now questionable 200 million euro loan required to close San Javier, as Corvera was considered “necessary” for regional development. The Directorate General for Competition also reported on issues with the San Javier location, which suffers “a serious problem of saturation in high season”, along with the restricted military academy activities at certain times of the operational day. Similarly, the runway was / is relatively short for large aircraft, and the facilities are close to “valuable natural areas” and surrounded by zones “densely populated”, so that any extension would have a negative impact. Therefore, it would prove difficult to increase passenger numbers in the future, a report which was concluded and approved even before the recent reduction in passengers using San Javier. On Wednesday, the Regional Minister of Industry, Tourism, Business and Innovation, Juan Carlos Ruiz, confirmed that the opening of Corvera is “a quantitative leap for tourism in the region”, and it is “essential for tourism that this airport opens”, whilst not giving any actual dates, but guaranteeing that the regional government will do “everything in our power to make it easier to open”. Part of his insistence is that a report from the Chamber of Commerce of Murcia states that the regional economy will grow again in 2014, after five years of decline, but next year “may be an important year” in which we can “translate that growth”. With the operational outlook now looking more positive than ever before, and with time ticking away until the first payment of 7 million euro needed before the 1st of January to offset a 180 million euro payment plan, the ability to secure flights sooner rather than later can only be of benefit to the new Murcia Regional airport, albeit at the cost to San Javier, which will close at some point, whether in April or later, a move which is seemingly inevitable.

NINTH SOLIDARITY CHARITY CALENDER Representatives of several associations got together last week in the Rocajuna offices of lawyers ArocaSequier when the Solidarity Fiesta Calendar 2015 was presented. Andy Ormiston explained that this is the ninth charity calendar which various charity groups sell for six euros to boost their funds. The title of the calendar is ‘Torrevieja Outlook’, which is the name of a free electronic monthly magazine and webpage run by Andy, who has missed a couple of years producing this informative publication due to ill health, but thanks to support from local businesses, once again he has been able to print the calendar free to the associations. Here at The Leader we will be selling it in aid of this year's Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. During the presentation Andy made an Award of appreciation to Fernardo Guardiola for the work of his team at Objectivo Torrevieja who report every event organised for charity in Torrevieja. There was also one other award for Keith Nicol who provided photographs for the calendar. Other Photos were from Javier Torregrosa and Carlos García, who once again designed the Calendar. There was also a big surprise for Karolina of the Torrevieja Charity Reach Out when she was presented with a donation of 5,431,71 euros by lawyer Miguel Angel Aroca in collaboration with Currency Direct. Reach Out is only three years in existence where volunteers provide support to the homeless by offering a drop in centre where they can shower, have a change of clothing or launder their own, and have something to eat; Karolina laughingly said that their homeless were the cleanest and best dressed in Spain, thanks to the magnicent support they have been receiving by members of the local community.

The colourful calendar is a poster sized edition of sixteen pages, full of information about fiestas and events, not only in Torrevieja, but also in neighbouring towns of the Valencia and Murcia regions. Each month the main photo is about a fiesta or place, with space for notes. The bank holidays in Spain, United Kingdom and Ireland are also marked up, along with full moon and international events. It is not just a twelve month calendar but there are extra pages of photos and information featuring local monuments and cultural events. There are important emergency numbers as well as a useful web sites for those looking for information of weather, places to visit, hospitals, hotels, tourist events etc. The calendar can be obtained from the Leader Offices in Los Dolses from where sales will be donated to the Royal British Legion. Other outlets selling the calender are HELP, Age Concern shops in Torrevieja and Los Montesinos, Alzheimers Day Centre, K9 shops at La Marina and Almoradi, AECC at Playa Flamenca, Reach Out at Nueva Torrevieja and The Coastrider new offices in C. Quesada, the Samaritans at Punta Marina as well as two of the ArocaSequier and Alamo Costa Blanca offices. The production of the calendar has been possible thanks to the sponsorship of Alamo Costa Blanca, Brithol Mapfre Seguros, Atlas Insurance Brokers, and hosts of the presentation - ArocaSequir Abogados y Associates.

ALICANTE’S TRANSPORT DREAM PAYS OFF ollowing the enormous amount of urban development in Alicante, the capital of the Costa Blanca’s tourist region, in recent years, it was felt that the transport infrastructure would not be able to cope. As such experts said that a new public transport network was needed to prevent the existing transport system from collapse. The city already had a network of urban and suburban tramways (1893-1969) although the region’s most efficient transport system remains the Ferrocarrils owned (FGV) narrow-gauge railway between Alicante and Denia (1914-15), a line stretching for 93km and connecting many of the Costa Blanca’s main towns. However as the system developed an ever increasing number of operational problems, a little under 20 years ago the operator FGV-TRAM Alicante decided to use the infrastructure of this rail line to provide

F

the city with a new tram system, thereby creating Spain’s first light rail network The operation involved converting various sections of the single-track line into double-track tram tracks and taking advantage of the urban regeneration works slicing through various built-up areas. The network got off to a modest start when the first section, a local line linking Puerta del Mar, La Marina and La Albufereta, opened in March 1999. The network was extended later that year. At the same time, it was decided that an urban branch line should be built to the city centre. The route taken by the line is breathtaking, starting at the entrance to the city then, after climbing a steep incline, crossing a viaduct and finally entering the city centre through an underground section. This and other characteristics now make Alicante’s tram network one of the most ambitious projects to have been completed in southern Europe.

DIY THREAT TO ENDANGERED BIRDS

he AHSA association which looks after the interests of the wetlands of the Southern Alicante area, along with the Southeast naturalists association ANSE, and ASE friends of Sierra de Escalona, have collectively presented arguments this week against the building of a new DIY store on the protected land of Torrevieja´s salt lakes.

T

One of the primary concerns of the environmentalists is that building on the area would seriously damage the colony of Audouin´s gulls which reside in the salt lake grounds, a species of Worldwide importance and with a “near threatened” status by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, thus considered threatened with extinction in the near future. In August of last year we reported how the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, had overseen the reclassification of land near the salt factory, to enable the construction of a new 32,000 square metre DIY retail store. The multinational

Kingfisher Group, which includes B&Q and ScrewFix, amongst the 6 brands they represent, plans to build a Brico Depot store on the plot near the cemetery, on the west side of the N332, to compliment their store already thriving in Elche, despite the site being centric to other DIY stores, such as Brico King (previously named Ardy), who have already struggled since the opening of Akí in the Habaneras centre, who in turn have suffered since Leroy Merlin opened at Zenia Boulevard. The plans were also met at the time with objection from the small and medium business associations of Torrevieja, who have seen years of declining trade, firstly due to the construction of the Habaneras centre and its surrounding businesses, then by the Zenia Boulevard, which had a similar affect of Habaneras. The environmental groups are opposed to further urbanizing of the perimeter of protection gaps of the Natural Park of La Mata and Torrevieja, given that it is one of the most natural areas hit by the urban pressures of the human population explosion. They also consider the proposed development as not compatible with the conservation of environmental values established in Plan de Ordenación de Recursos Naturales of the natural park. Because of the rich environmental values of this area, the site is considered of major interest to the Audouin's Gull, a protected and vulnerable species, and plays host to the second most important breeding colony for this species worldwide. As a result, the groups will demand an environmental impact study be carried out and published, as is required by law.

TORREVIEJA POLITICIAN RESIGNS Local coordinator of the UPyD political group in Torrevieja, José Serna, has resigned from his post within the group, after six years battling against corruption and political wrongdoing. Serna has stated that his resignation is due to the “unfortunate behaviour of the national leadership of UPyD”, that ended with the resignation of MEP Francisco Sosa Wagner. Serna also claims that “most members” of the UPyD in Torrevieja “have shown the same desire to leave”. In a statement, Serna describes how the degeneration and economic, social, institutional and moral ruins which have led to the corrupt imperfect bipartisanship of the PP and PSOE in Torrevieja, and to the enormous threat of populism looming, “it saddens me greatly to see how a political party led by the brave and admired Rosa Díez who aspired to change Spain, and with political pioneering demo-

cratic outlook, more necessary than ever in Torrevieja, Orihuela and throughout Spain, including: anti-corruption, transparency, reviving the economy, the fight against unemployment, the independence of justice, the elimination of volumetric, anti exclusive nationalism, independence of regulatory bodies, improvement of education and health, complaints against Bankia-Caja”, and how the national group is “adrift” from meeting “very difficult idealistic goals”. “I have devoted much time to politics. Time I subtracted from my family, sports and business, from now on I will open a period of reflection and decide between leaving politics or keep fighting for the Democratic Regeneration of UPyD or another similar project. Serna concluded by thanking those who have both inspired and followed him in his six year fight.

MANGO RECALL Spanish retailer Mango has recalled a blouse from their European stores after customers complained that the lightning bolt pattern resembled an insignia worn by soldiers in Nazi Germany. The blouse contained a tiny lightning bolt pattern that Twitter users, especially in Germany, said resembled the "Siegrune," a symbol sported by Nazi SS officers on their uniforms during World War II

BRIT ARREST Along with the PSOE and Los Verdes, the APTCe group filed a complaint in September against the government, for 3.5 million euro which was paid to the company NECSO, which is now part of Acciona. This complaint supersedes a previous allegation in 2011 of 4.5 million euro being misspent, which Soler accepts, but still maintains that the money must still be returned. Perhaps more worrying for the PP in Torrevieja is that a criminal corruption case such as this involves the current mayor, Eduardo Dolón, as well as former mayor and convicted criminal Pedro Hernández Mateo, along with councillors Joaquín Albaladejo, Loli Albaladejo, José Antonio Sánchez, Eduardo Gil Rebollo, Javier Montoro and Francisco Moreno. In the Partido Popular provincial conference last week, members of the PP were expected to sign a new agreement that if they were charged in a corruption case, they would resign from their post. This notion was affirmed by the provincial president, José Císcar, in a radio interview after the conference, in which he was asked to confirm the status of the so called “red line” against corruption. Císcar confirmed, “I don´t know how many times we can repeat it”, anybody charged in a corruption case cannot stand for election. Should the member of the government of Torrevieja be charged, the PP there would be in the same position as Orihuela, whereas hardly any of the known politicians would be allowed to stand for election in May, under the anti-corruption rules that their own party is trying to enforce in a bid to clean up their party image.

UPLIFTING COMPLAINT AT PUNTA PRIMA Orihuela´s Partido Popular has this week issued a complaint about the state of the lift access to the beach at Punta Prima, accompanied by the rather dramatic declaration that “Orihuela Costa remains in oblivion”. In a statement, the PP say that after almost 3 months, the lift which takes beachgoers down the high sided cliff “continues to deteriorate”, and that the “residents of Orihuela Costa are outraged at such abandonment”, considering that the PP first lodged the complaint in August of this year. They continue, “Neither neighbour complaints or allegations of the PP have helped the government team to manage this issue”, and that the government are “deaf to the problems that arise in the area of Orihuela coastline”. In the summer of 2010 the Partido Popular opened the lift which solved the problem of inaccessibility to the beach at Punta Prima, where only large stairs previously existed. The beach then achieved the recognition of the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality with the Quality Q certificate of excellence. Laying the responsibility firmly in the hands of the government team and the current councilor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, the PP claims that after a lot of investment the government is in no way compliant with the cleanliness or quality standards at this beach, and that the Orihuela Costa is at risk of losing the quality accreditations. In response to the allegations, Martina Scheurer told The Leader that the lift is only open for use during the high season, and therefore would no longer have been in use after the 21st of September. However, during this time, a quote for repairing the lift, which is a non-standard installation and was made to measure, has been obtained and approved, and the repair was in fact ordered last week.

COUNCILLOR DEFENDS CHIRINGUITO ACCUSATIONS

As the courts are investigating whether or not there is a case to answer in relation to the award for the contract to operate the Chiringuito beach bars of Orihuela, the current councillor for the coast, Martin Scheurer, has defended her actions after she revealed some surprising details about the previous pending tender. A former councillor for the coast, Pedro Mancebo, has taken up the fight to criticise the contract, which some people feel may have been rigged in order to ensure that only one company could apply. As previously reported, part of the issue was the inclusion that the successful company but have a “Q” accreditation for quality, which none of the other applying companies had. However, the contract also called for the successful company to also have ISO accreditations, again, which none of the other applicant companies did. Mancebo has claimed that a contract had already been prepared during his tenure in the role of councillor, and that his version should have been used, rather than the revised contract which was awarded. However, the Mancebo created contract also had requirements for the ISO accreditation, which would have still excluded those companies which were not successful, irrespective of the “Q” status. In addition, the Mancebo draft also required bidding companies to have a 3 year proven track record in a similar business, with takings of at least 600,000 euro per year. Criticism had also been levied towards Scheurer for loosing Orihuela money, as her version of the contract was valued at 350,000 euro. The successful company bid was slightly higher than the minimum amount. Details in the Mancebo contract reveal that

his version was for just 321,000 euro, lower than the now awarded contract. In addition, the current contract is for a 4 year period, extendable in one year blocks for a maximum of 3 years, whereas the Mancebo version was for a fixed period of 10 years. Scheurer therefore states that if the allegation that her contract loses money over the 4 to 7 year period, then the Mancebo draft would have lost even more and for a longer period. It is not yet clear if the courts will decide if there is a case to answer to or not, for her part, Scheurer believes her conscience to be clear, and that everything has been meticulously checked to ensure compliance, but in the midst of claims and allegations being made public, the facts can only speak for themselves as the documentary evidence comes to light through the correct and legal channels. In defending her actions Martin Scheurer revealed some surprising details about the previous tender

“LITTLE NICOLÁS” EMBARRASSES SECURITY CHIEFS Madrid’s Red faced security bosses are asking themselves just how a baby-faced, 20-year-old university student, could bluff his way into the coronation of the new king, pass himself off as a government adviser to reportedly broker a lucrative business deal, and avoid traffic jams by flashing a fake police light? He did it by falsifying police and secret service documents and pretending to hold several government and other official posts. But now the game is up as the student in question, Francisco Nicolás Gómez Iglesias, was arrested having quickly gained prominence as the country’s most notorious gate-crasher. And as he appeared in court last week judge Mercedes Pérez Barrios was incredulous at the extent of Mr. Gómez Iglesias’s double life. In her report, she wrote that she could “not understand how a young man of 20, using only his own word and identity, could have access to government conferences, places and events without causing any alarm.” One of the most worrying security breaches occurred on June 19, when Mr. Gómez Iglesias was among the guests at the royal palace and actually shook the hand of the new king, Felipe VI. But rather than spending most of his time on university benches, Mr. Gómez Iglesias preferred to lunch with top business executives and politicians, even joining them in the V.I.P. box of the Real Madrid football team’s Bernabéu stadium. He also moonlighted as an advisor to the government, and sometimes as an agent of the secret service, according to El Confidencial, the newspaper that first reported the case. He also managed to receive 25,000 euros from a businessman in return for helping facilitate a property deal, acting as a government adviser, according to the judge’s report. Mr. Gómez Iglesias, known to his friends as Frankie, has now been dubbed “Little Nicolás” by the Spanish news media, in reference to a series of French novels about a mischievous schoolboy. Mr. Gómez Iglesias’s gate-crashing exploits came to an end when he tried unsuccessfully to attend a party at the American Embassy, as well as further his relationship with Spain’s royal household. The Spanish police then started an investigation, leading to his arrest last week. Frankie gatecrashed the coronation of King Felipe

TELEVISION RE-TUNE TIME As you woke on Sunday morning, you should have paid attention to two important pieces of technology. The first item of attention would be your clocks, setting them back an hour. The second piece of equipment is your TV, re-tuning it to receive the channels you may have got before the weekend. In order to clear the way for mobile phone and tablet use on currently occupied frequencies, the Spanish government has forced television broadcasters to move to new frequencies. A state bulletin was published this week that gave those broadcasters a window in which to carry out the switchover, which was set to coincide with the clock change, between 02:00 and 06:00 on Sunday morning. This batch of changes affects many of the main Spanish stations, broadcast through a normal terrestrial system, although some have until the 1st of January to make their final switch. In order to ease the burden on communities facing the change, the government offered a grant to pay for the retuning of communal and shared receivers. The information from the government states that if your building has more than three dwellings, it is likely that your reception system is a programmable control unit or a system of singlechannel amplification. In both cases the property manager or the president of your community owners must call an installer to prepare your collective building antennas for receiving the new channels. It is for this that a government grant is possible.

The grant must me applied for through the government channel by the community president of property management, who must have an appropriate tax code and bank account, and the work must have been completed by an authorized installation company, a list of which is available from the Spanish government. However, in those homes that have a system of wideband reception, primarily single family homes and buildings with less than three dwellings, adaptation is not necessary, because the receiving system is already capable of receiving the new frequencies, without the need for any adjustment, other than a possible rescan of your channel list. If you do not conduct a rescan, you will lose some of the channels from your list.

EX-COUNCILLOR FAKES SICK PENSION An ex-United Left (IU) councillor from Alicante, Óscar Morales, has pretended to suffer from cancer for the last five years so that he could claim a state sick pension Morales is alleged to have forged medical reports from three hospitals in 2008 and, until he was caught just under two years ago, he has been claiming approximately 1,000 per month incapacity benefit. The amount claim is said to be in the region of 70,000 euros which, when eventually caught, he immediately refunded together with an appropriate amount of interest. One-time councillor for Youth and Cooperation at Elche city council between 1995 and 1999, he was also chairman of the Elche Football Club Foundation. He is said to have forged a report from the Vall d’Hebrón hospital in Barcelona diagnosing him with colon cancer, and another from the hospital San Juan de Alicante detailing his chemotherapy treatment, as well as a third from Elche General Hospital for radiotherapy. He also managed to fake the official stamps, including one from the College of Medicine, as well as the signatures of real doctors at all three centres, describing in the reports, in detail, how the cancer had spread. The scam was said to be so convincing that his doctor prescribed opiates to help him with the side-effects of the treatment. But when called in for his annual medical check-up, a requirement of the Social Security System for those who are claiming a sick pension, his doctor became suspicious when the medical reports he supplied did not seem to bear any relation to his apparent state of health. An

investigation ensued and it transpired that the reports were fake. Morales is now facing two criminal charges, one of Social Security fraud and another of falsifying documentation. He is said to have forged 3 reports from different hospitals

CRESCENDO INTERNATIONAL CHOIR CELEBRATES What would warrant a celebration cake 65 cms in length by 45 cms width? Answer: the tenth birthday party of Crescendo International Choir on the 11th October at El Paraiso. The current Chairperson, Mary Mitchell, stressed that the increasing numbers of singers from many different countries makes their title more apt than ever. The choir director, Irene Oliva, and pianist Tony Guillen, are Spanish born and bred. Members hail from all over the U.K., Holland, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland and Russia. So a united nations if ever there was one – disparate in native tongue but united by sunshine and song in Spain.

MAYORAL DECISION Torrevieja’s Partido Popular has decided unanimously that should it win the next local elections in May, they would reelect the current mayor, Eduardo Dolón, as the head of the municipality. This of course is assuming that the proposed electoral reforms suggested by the central government will not be implemented in time.

SPORTING LIFE Torrevieja´s Sports City now attracts some 2,500 people every day, thanks to a new wave of initiatives and courses being run at the facility, as well as the improved facilities. The site is now being used by all of the local schools for sports events, as well as being attended by private groups and individuals keen to partake in the wide range of sports on offer.

ELLO ELLO A new book was released in Spain this week telling some of the success stories that the National Police has had through its Twitter account. With well over a million followers, the @policia account shares vital information on safety, security and alerts throughout the country.

Forty Seven choir members regaled their audience at the party with 10 familiar songs from their 10 year repertoire and joined their friends and family for a meal. A hundred people in all enjoying fellowship and food provided by Alberto and his staff, who later received flowers and gifts of gratitude for providing a practice venue, refreshments and extra catering when required. Mary Priddle created Crescendo and persuaded Chas Smith to become the first musical director with Sue Trick as the pianist. Since then Irene has honed her conducting skills and, as Chas said in his after dinner speech, the choir is currently in good hands. More than one speaker mentioned the amount of money that has been raised for various charities. Crescendo International Choir is a 4-part choir – soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Of the 47 who sang at the party, the “lower end” had only seven members, 6 men and 1 lady. Therefore it goes without saying if you are a man with a tuneful voice then:CRESCENDO INTERNATIONAL CHOIR NEEDS YOU! Any pitch of voice – higher or lower, any language, just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are the basic requirements. You will benefit from free English lessons as you learn the words, make new International friends and gain a ‘feel good’ factor about charitable fund raising with your voice. All details are on the web-site (crescendo-choir.com) or turn up at a rehearsal on Fridays at 9.45 a.m. at El Paraiso, near Carrefour.

SHANI ORMISTON NOMINATED FOR FOR HOLLYWOOD MUSIC AWARDS.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Wearing a Dress to Make a Point The Canarian Island of Gran Canaria is well known for its ‘live and let live’ attitude to life, which is one of the reasons why I love this island so much. Whether you are straight, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or just plain confused, it really doesn’t matter. If you happen to want to wear a dress instead of trousers few folk will raise as much as an eyebrow, although you would be well advised to have a decent hair do and a full facial to go with it. Gran Canaria is not adverse to a little cross dressing from time to time, and the right to be flexible when wearing clothing is firmly defended by most generous thinking people on the island. However, a campaign by the taxi divers in our capital city of Las Palmas did raise a few eyebrows recently. Sadly, the taxi drivers in Las Palmas have been a little upset, because of the policies and demands of the City authorities. They were also more than a little peeved at being asked to wear smart uniforms, which the city authorities felt would improve their presentation when greeting tourists arriving at the airport. A number of other

issues also meant that the taxi drivers felt that their work was not valued and that the authorities were undermining them. Anger built up and the taxi drivers felt that the only way that they could protest was not to strike, work to rule, or go on a protest march, but for the male taxi drivers to start wearing dresses, or a skirt and blouse. Initially, the protesting taxi drivers announced that they would cross dress on Mondays and Wednesday, leaving the rest of the week for them to recover, as well as giving them the opportunity to refresh their wardrobes, or return items borrowed from wives and girlfriends. Feelings ran very high, since the taxi drivers felt that this was the only way that would command the attention of the City authorities, as well as a, hopefully, sympathetic public. Many drivers commented that they thought there were far more serious issues to be concerned about than wearing uniforms, as demanded by the city authorities. Indeed, the drivers felt that the area manager, whose Spanish name interestingly translates into ‘Mr Tasty’, should resign in favour of someone who could resolve the drivers’ many grievances. The president of the taxi drivers’ association, who is a woman, commented that she was very proud of her members’ actions, as it had started a street movement. In any case, as all holidaymakers to these islands are acutely aware, wearing a skirt is much more comfortable in the Canarian climate than trousers. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, seemed to be the general view of these latest cross dressers.

So there we have it. Be warned that if your taxi driver is a friendly, but macho, hairy Canarian sporting a moustache and beard and a broad grin, but also wearing one of the latest frilly numbers from Zara, please don’t panic. Just smile and tell him where you wish to go in the usual manner. Please also tip generously, because he may well be saving up for an extension to his wardrobe. If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). Available as paperback, Kindle and iBooks. iPhone/iPad and Android Apps: ExpatInfo, CanaryIsle and CanaryGay now available. © Barrie Mahoney

OPENING SOON The Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, has confirmed that the legal action to reopen the walkway at the Bellavista urbanisation is nearing the end of the allowed time period. “As with all administrative procedures in Spain, these things take time, and we want to make sure that we don´t take shortcuts that could cause problems in the future”, she told The Leader, “but the final phase of consultation is nearing the end, at which point the councillor for infrastructure, Antonio Zapata, will appear before the press to announce when action will begin”. Many residents in the area have been fighting for years to have the public walkway reopened, and so the anticipation this close to realising that goal is becoming increasingly exciting for many.

GAY TEENS STONED Gay groups have called for tougher anti-homophobia laws in the wake of an incident which saw a gay teenage girl left unconscious after she was pelted with stones after leaving school in the Murcian town of Caravaca de la Cruz on Monday. When the young boy turned to the aggressors and told them to leave him and his friend "in peace", the three school students began to pelt the homosexual pair with stones.

TOYOTA’S SEVEN MILLION HYBRID CAR SALES

BY NICK IRELAND The pace of Toyota’s worldwide hybrid vehicle sales continues to accelerate with a further million units added in just nine months, taking the cumulative total through the seven-million mark. At the end of September the number reached 7.053 million. The results bear witness to Toyota’s commitment to help mitigate the impact of motor vehicles on the environment by encouraging the mass-market adoption of cleaner, more efficient hybrids. Toyota’s hybrid range continues to grow, with 28 different passenger car models (including the Prius Plug-in hybrid) currently sold in more than 90 countries and regions. The new model strategy for 2014-2015 features 15 new hybrids, including in the UK the new Lexus NX 300h crossover and RC 300h coupe. In the future more new models and markets will be added.

Toyota calculates that as of 30 September, Toyota hybrid vehicles have reduced the amount of CO2 entering the atmosphere – believed to be a cause of global warming – by approximately 49 million tonnes, compared to the impact the same number of equivalent petrol-powered vehicles would have. On the same basis, it also estimates its hybrids have saved around 18,000 million litres of petrol. Toyota entered hybrid vehicle production in August 1997 with the launch in Japan of the Coast Hybrid EV bus, followed in December by the first generation Prius, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid car. In the UK Prius launched Toyota’s hybrid market in 2000. Since then Toyota’s hybrids have enjoyed increasing support from customers around the world. Toyota’s hybrid system is designed as a core technology that can be used in different forms to create environmentally efficient vehicles for different customer requirements. The company will continue to work to raise performance, reduce costs and expand its product line-up – including the introduction of environmentally efficient non-hybrid vehicles. Locally, Torrevieja City Council plans to introduce a Plan 30 scheme, to limit traffic to 30 kph downtown. They are also promoting the use of electric vehicles, although few of the city’s fleet of municipal vehicles run on electric power. Torrevieja also plans to cut the amount of CO2 in the downtown area, however, as pointed out by the Automobile Association and other Motoring groups, the slowing of traffic in a town centre has the effect of raising both CO2 levels and has not cut down on accidents. However, possibly adding more Hybrid vehicles to the Torrevieja municipal fleet might start to lead the way in encouraging the use of hybrid and electric vehicles in Torrevieja.

MADRID BEFORE CHRISTMAS treets buzz with life as the inhabitants of the capital city rush about preparing for Christmas. Well lit Christmas trees decorate the squares, Santa’s bearded face smiles out of shop windows. Even during the day you will find the streets and shops full of happy shoppers. Other things to do while you are there is to visit the Royal Palace. This large attractive building once home to the Monarchs of Spain, now open to the general public, sits in front of an attractive tree lined square and alongside the Alameda Cathedral where many Royal events take place. The National Archaeological museum, home to many of the treasures of Spain. Including the famous Dama de Elche. Familiar to anyone who has visited Elche. Then there is the Thyssen Museum, Reina Sofia museum, and the Prado Museum. Between these museums you have a massive collection which offers some of the worlds most well known, most valuable and decidedly most beautiful and soul searching art. Beside this the large oasis of tranquillity right in the heart of the city. The delightful Buen Retiro park which once served as the gardens of the Royal Place. Returning to our hotel (which is right beside the Royal Palace), we take a different route. Going up past Puerta del Sol gate (the gate of the sun). On the stroke of midnight on New Years night millions of Spaniards all over

An Evening of Song and Dance In Aid of AMMA

The will be a charity concert on Sunday 2nd November starting at 7.30 at the Pilar Cinema in aid of AMMA. This is a new charity that aims to assist people who suffer from Alzheimer’s or other debilitating illnesses or traumas such as strokes. AMMA was formed to provide a Day Care Centre for people who have Alzheimer’s or other deliberating conditions and to offer much needed relief for their carers. There was felt to be a need for a centre that specifically met the needs of English speakers as well as Spanish people. AMMA was formed as a consequence of some British people with husbands, wives, mothers, etc who suffered from Alzheimer and other forms of dementia who started meeting on a fortnightly basis to give the carers support. Eventually it was decided, with the help of Raquel Pena, to approach San Pedro Town Hall to see if they could give us somewhere where we could have a Day Care Centre. The centre is looking for Psychologists, Physiotherapists, Volunteers, etc who can speak both Spanish and English to help us with this much needed facility. If there is anyone out there who could fill these positions please contact Louise Innes 96 532 2614. We look forward to welcoming Spanish carers and their loved ones and we are very fortunate to have an excellent translator. This charity concert promises to be a great evening of live entertainment featuring well known performers such as Sunshine FMs Dan Davey as compare, the fabulous young soloist Rebecca Holt, The Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers, T.A.A.B.S plus dancing by The Crazy Ladies and the Flemenco for All Dancers, under the directorship of Raquel Pena. Tickets available 965 319 279 or 669179281 or 965 322 614. Only 5 Euros

TIME TO GET MADE UP BY JO ou too will be as “Made-up” as the countless clients that beautician Jo has HELPED during her 12 years as a beauty consultant, both in the UK and Spain, with her extensive knowledge from both salons and in personal consultations meaning that her expertise and knowledge are second to none. Originally from Merseyside, Jo-Anne Tomkinson is fully trained and qualified in her specialties of permanent make-up, Hollywood Lashes and threading, and, having previously owned her own salon, TIME TO GET MADE UP BY JO. Similar to the process of tattooing, the technique used to create the permanent make-up look can tackle areas such as eye-lining, lip lining, eyebrow enhancements and even colour of the face, lips and eyelids. Totally safe and usually lasting in the region of five years, the treatment is like a life-saver to those who suffer allergies to conventional make-up, is a joy for those with less than steady hands, and save the all consuming time process of daily application. Eyebrow treatment costs just 200 euro, and eyeliner is just 100 euro top or bottom, or 150 euro for both. A beauty spot can be treated for just 50 euro, the same price for recolouring existing work. Not only that, all treatments include a complimentary top up after six weeks. Hollywood Lashes are semi-permanent eyelash extensions that last for between four and six weeks, much

Y

longer than the standard extension. They are made to look natural and with no bobbling or feathering they are weightless and both look and feel as natural as your own eye enhancements. They are water resistant, so ideal for use when swimming, showering or even during a tearful moment, and resist crimping at the same time as being extremely flexible. With a range of lengths, thicknesses and colour, your new eyelashes can also be tailored to your individual needs for that natural, but glamorous look. As for threading, a well known treatment that has origins in the middle-east, a thin cotton or polyester thread is doubled over, twisted and rolled over the treatment area, plucking unwanted hairs away, at follicle level, leaving no obvious trace at the area that soon becomes clear and s m o o t h . Jo is able to tailor treatments to U n l i k e clients, whatever their needs. u s i n g tweezers and plucki n g , threading has the benefit of being able to remove even the smallest

trace hairs, and, unlike waxing, offer precision control over the area to be treated. Treatments can be carried out at a number of local salons, including Bliss, Million Dollar Beauty, Lauren´s Nails, Perfect 10, Zest and the Los Dolses Academy, and operates her own fully legal and insured mobile treatment service that can visit your home, or other local businesses on demand. Jo is also keen to offer her services in other salons, and is keen to talk to owners who may wish to offer this service to an existing and potentially increasing client base. Salon owners, private clients and just those looking for more information can contact Jo on 634 331 663, or email jotommo@hotmail.co.uk. Give her a call today. You too will be “Made-Up” that you did.

erhaps a little unusual, but we start this week with a commercial announcement, as I have to tell you about the honey, mummy! You might well remember those immortal words being uttered by a big, furry, yellow giant on TV? Well, the good news is that the Honey Monster is back. Appearing in his first TV advert for some years, he hasn´t aged at all bad, but there is one significant difference. In an attempt to distance themselves from the dreaded “S” word, our cuddly friend is now advertising Honey Monster Puffs. The “S” word is sugar by the way, the previous name of the breakfast cereal being Sugar Puffs, for those who perhaps can´t remember them.

P

Whilst we´re on the subject of adverts though, you might remember The Bear and the Hare, which was last year´s John Lewis Christmas TV advert. You might also remember the Channel 4 show Goggle box showed us the families trying to guess what the ad was for. Well, this year, John Lewis has signed a deal with Channel 4 to incorporate Gogglebox into this year´s campaign. The details are shrouded in secrecy of course, for now, but it will certainly be memorable.

One more ad based feature, then we´ll move on to the real TV shows! Supermarket chain Waitrose has launched its Christmas campaign by asking members of the public and its staff to lend their voices to its seasonal advertising campaign. Dolly Parton´s song “Try” is the chosen festive song, which will also be released as a charity single, with all the proceeds being split between three UK charities, Age UK, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and foodbank operator, The Trussell Trust. If you dare to take part, search Google for “Waitrose donate your voice”. I did say that was the end of the advert overview, but we couldn´t ignore the fact that Sainsbury’s Christmas campaign is to focus on the famous football match between British and German forces in December 1914, to mark the event´s 100-year anniversary, keeping history alive, albeit for commercial reasons. With more focus towards the events of WW1, the BBC will be showing a powerful five-part drama which sees the conflict unfold through the eyes of two very ordinary young men. Written by Life on Mars writer Tony Jordan, the series is part of the BBC’s programming to mark the Centenary of WW1. Paddy Gibson and Jack Lowden star as Thomas and Michael, two young men for whom the war has little mercy, no matter which side they might be fighting for. Over five chronological years The Passing Bells follows their lives, as they grow up, lose friends and find love amid the horrors of the war. Back home, their families and loved ones anxiously await news from the front. The BBC has also announced an impressive cast including Peter Mullan, Gary Lewis, Sharon Small, Christian Cooke and Charlotte Spencer, for their new drama, Stonemouth, a two-part dramatization of acclaimed author Iain Banks’ novel made by BBC Scotland and Slate North which starts shooting in

Scotland this month, to air on both BBC One Scotland and BBC Two in 2015. The first TV adaptation of Banks’ work since his death in 2013, Stonemouth is a rite-of-passage tale delving into love, loyalty and vengeance, focusing on the character of Stewart Gilmour played by Christian Cooke, who returns to the fictional village of Stonemouth for his best friend’s funeral. Run out of town a year earlier by girlfriend Ellie Murston’s criminal family, Stewart is forced to face up to his own past whilst uncovering the sinister truth behind his friend’s apparent suicide. On a lighter note, Sir Michael Gambon has been confirmed as the voice of the eponymous vengeful robot in E4’s brand-new hidden camera show from Objective Productions, Bad Robots. The six-part comedy series, due to air on E4 in early November, takes a compelling look at our increased reliance on machines and continued exasperation with them, using new technology to create hilariously infuriating situations and computer-generated pranks. A host of demonic robots, from argumentative vending machines to patently biased pub quiz machines, abusive electronic road signs to a spray tan booth that loves to spray you (but not the colour you want…) are all intent on giving their human users a really hard time. From the world of music, ITV has announced A Night With Olly Murs, a brand new one-off musical extravaganza with the award-winning singer. In the show, Olly will be performing some of his best known hits, such as Dear Darlin’ and Heart Skips A Beat, as well as more recent material from his new album, Never Been Better, including new single Wrapped Up. Much like previous shows, he will also be giving an insight into the real Olly Murs, answering questions from a star-studded audience. If you´re looking for a musical day out, and happen to be in Newport, Katherine Jenkins OBE is set to

ensure that Christmas will be coming early as BBC Wales’s star-studded seasonal concert, The Really Welsh Christmas Show, is staged at the Newport Centre, being recorded on the 13th and 14th of November, with free tickets available now from the Newport Centre. The event will also become the focus in Wales of the annual spectacular of entertainment and fundraising for BBC Children in Need.

Chat show fans might be pleased to know that ITV has confirmed a new exclusivity deal with Jonathan Ross, which means two more series of The Jonathan Ross Show for 2015, and a Christmas Special next year. That concluded this update and neatly bringing us back to both 2015 and Christmas highlights, exactly where we began on this week´s update. Finally, this week a generation of Fraggle Rock fans mourned the death of Gerard Parkes, a 90 year old Canadian actor of Irish origin who played Doc in the popular show. The only human in the Jim Henson series which ran for five seasons in the eighties, Doc appeared in his workshop, accompanied by his trusty dog Sprocket, telling a story that served to initiate the action within a scene that was, at once the single point of connection from the world of the Fraggles with men.

IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP PATRICK REED’S Ryder Cup opponents collared him last week when he returned to the UK for the Volvo World Matchplay and had their photo taken mimicking Reed’s gesture to the crowd at Gleneagles. Reed took it all in good part. For the camera anyway. Back in his hotel room he probably chewed the carpet. Dr. FRANK STABLEORD deserves to be remembered by amateur golfers everywhere. Dr. Stableford was a surgeon in the Boer war and WWI, afterwards becoming Captain of Wallasey Golf Club on the Wirral. He devised a system of points scoring after realizing one day that many players were getting very little fun out of their golf, often tearing up their score cards after a few holes, especially at Wallasey, where strong winds could make play extremely difficult. Golf handicaps had originally been used for the purpose of wagers but eventually there was a need for a central handicapping authority. In 1881 the use of three rounds and then take the average was adopted. Many clubs played medal competitions, hard for the less formal golfer, or they played against bogey, based on the best average scores over a particular course, which was very individual, with widely differing standards. Dr. Stableford’s points system was first played in competition at Wallasey on 16th May 1932, and was an instant success. At the time the maximum male handicap was 21, but not liking the idea of anyone receiving 2 strokes at a hole, he restricted the allowance to 7/8th of handicap, giving a maximum of 18 shots. Gradually he refined the system to give 4bbb, foursomes and mixed matches. The great advantage of Dr. Stableford’s system is that it enables a player to continue after a few bad holes, and speeds up play by letting a player pick up when he is out of contention. It was Henry Longhurst’s opinion that “No single man did more to increase the enjoyment of the more humble golfer.”

GOLF IN AMERICA can be interesting. Approaching the 16th green in Montana a golfer came across three bear cubs wrestling with the flag (no sign of Goldilocks.) And in Oregon an eagle landed on the green, picked a player’s golf ball up in it’s beak and flew off. The surprised golfer said: “I’d been hoping for an eagle all day.” In case you’re wondering, rule 18/1 has it covered: If a ball at rest is moved by an outside agency, there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced. RORY McILROY has pulled out of the Shanghai HSBC and BMW Masters to prepare for his forthcoming courtroom battle against Horizon Sports Management. Horizon is countersuing for breach of contract. For both protagonists millions are at stake. For the lawyers Christmas has come early. THE EUROPEAN FATHER AND SON Championship returns to Valle del Este, Almeria, from 27th October to 1st November. Over 50 teams compete for the title of best scratch and handicap Father and Son team in Europe. Last year’s winners, both from England, will return free as part of their prize. Open to any pro or amateur team, maximum handicap 24, contestants’ ages range from 10 to 90 (not a team presumably) The 54 hole 2bbb Stableford event brings golfers and their families over for a great week in the sun. Sky Sports cameras, press and announcers all make it as close to a pro championship as possible, and with evening entertainment, spas and a carnival atmosphere it is proving a popular annual fixture. “Columbus went round the world in 1492; that isn’t a lot of strokes when you consider the course.” Lee Trevino (Who else?) Just a reminder folks that any loose change dropped in to the poppy boxes this month will all help this very worthy cause. Until next time, happy golfing. PADDY'S POINT GS - CAPTAIN'S V CHAIRMAN'S

The long awaited clash between the Captain's and Chairman's teams from Paddy's Point once again provided one of the best contested competitions of the year. The Captain's team were the holders of the "Comaskey Cup" so this year's captain, Ian Comaskey, was clearly going all out to retain the cup. Chairman, John Bryan, and Vice Chairman, Mick Ruttledge were determined to put on a stronger performance than last year. 40 players were split in to two teams to play 20 singles matches on the same matchplay format as the Ryder Cup. Unfortunately 3 days before the match Mick Ruttledge injured his back and was unable to play so Shaun Murphy stood in to fill the vice chairman's role. Another problem on the day of the match when one of the Chairman's team didn't turn up so the Captain started the morning 1 up without a shot being played. Although unable to play Mick did a sterling job walking around the course giving encouragement and letting everyone know how the scores were panning out, he kept everyone on their toes. The first four ball consisted of John Bryan, Shaun Murphy, Ian Comaskey and Vice Captain Paul Cullen. The game started slowly until the captain ran up a 3 hole lead but the chairman had an outstanding back 9 and ran out the winner by 2 holes. Shaun was 3 down with 4 to play but pulled it back to even to secure half a point. What a great 4 ball that was! This set the standard for the rest of the day

with the Chairman's team running up a 7 - 3 lead by halfway. The Captain's team worked hard to try and get back but the final score was Chairman's team 11.5 to the Captain's 8.5. Well done to the players of both teams. The Chairman's winning team was: John Bryan (Chairman), Shaun Murphy, Sean McCarthy, Ollie Teahan, Ted Duffy, John Stapleton, Terry Fitzgerald, David McBride, John Lynch, Willie Crangle, Janet Bryan, Dave Adams, John Stafford, John Hillier, Arthur McMullen, Wayne Stevenson, Paddy Murray, Tony Maher and Martin Wright. NTP hole 3 - Martin Wright, NTP hole 9 - Tony Maher, NTP hole 15 - Shaun Murphy, NTP hole 17 - John Bryan, NTP in 3 hole 18 - Terry Fitzgerald Longest Drive - Terry Fitgerald A great day out was had by all, many thanks to Raquel and her staff at La Serena. The course has really got back to its best condition for years and we will return very soon. Then it was back to Paddy's Point with speeches from both the Captain and Chairman thanking their teams before presentation of the cup and individual medals. Thank you to Hazel and her staff at Paddy's Point for their hospitality. Future events: Weds Nov 12 - Alenda, Weds Dec 9 - Las Colinas winter cup. To secure a place please give your name to bar staff and pay the green fees by the Sunday before the event.

180´s: Peter Ayres (Porter House), Pat Abrams (Meerkats) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) This week´s highest finish: 124 Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) What a tussle down at Busters Bar when they entertained Porter House in this week´s top of the table clash. Shirley Roberts´ Busters side found themselves 6-2 up, requiring just one from 4 singles and 2 valuable points. It didn’t happen as some splendid finishing from Ray Sanderson´s side gradually reduced the deficit, finally sealing the draw and shared spoils. Mark Filer opened with his customary ton, but it was Porter Yvonne Rouffignac who finished the 701 on D10 for an early lead. Busters response was emphatic. Paul Dowington 125 and Ray Harvey 100,D8 levelled in no time. More tons followed, Filer´s 121 was overshadowed by Sid Cross´s 100 and Peter Ayres 133 and D2. Surprisingly Busters took all three pairs. A 116 from Cross was insufficient as Filer completed the 601 on D3 to take the first. Dowington finished using the bull to take the second, leaving Babs Warren to complete the pairs whitewash on D10 after a magnificent 174. Porter Ray Hayes faced the familiar figure of Filer in the first single. Hayes lone ton was eclipsed by the Buster as two game shots in the best of 3 encounter were accompanied by 2x140 and a 135. Paul Gurrie´s D9 and D20 were too much for Rouffignac as the hosts moved ominously closer to victory leading 6-2. Roberts looked like making it both points when D20 went straight in for a 1-0 lead against Paul Sanderson, the Porter making it 1 apiece on D16, to ensure the decider. The captain´s 132 wobbled the visitor, but he steadied himself with 47 remaining and duly planted S15,D16 and a slight chance of retrieving the match at 6-3. Ray Harvey figured next versus birthday boy Sid Cross, who would only own up to being 31. Yeh really

Crossey! The “young man” from Sidcup was obviously keen to get back to the bar as 2x100 and a 125 plus two tidy finishes of 58 (S18,D20) and 49 (S17,D16) made short work of the Buster but more importantly 4 legs for the Porters. Warren found her earlier form missing as she faced Ayres to take the match. The Porter man opened with some reasonable scoring but his finishing was the all important factor in a tremendous victory, a 72 out (S12,S20,D20) and D20 using one dart, saw off Warren´s challenge for 6-5. The 12th leg loomed, Dowington for Busters, Ray Sanderson for Porters. Busters had the advantage of first throw, which of course favoured the hosts. A single ton from captain Porter and D20 plus first throw in the second gave Sanderson a real lift. Dowington´s response was 2x100, Sanderson just a ton. A couple of missed doubles from both was retrieved by the Porter who nailed D5 for 2-0 and an overall 6 apiece result giving each side one point. Wonderful match! Details are a little sketchy but Porter Brian Nash encountered a nasty fall this week, resulting in hospitalisation and numerous head and facial stitches. I understand he is now recovering and I am sure I represent all the Euronics League players in wishing him well and a speedy recovery. Meerkats stay just above Busters after a comfortable away win over Junction Jackals. Licensee Andy Gildea serves a nice pint at the Junction and has erected an excellent throw for us players, unfortunately they use invisible ink for scoring which makes working out your finishing a little difficult. Steph sort out the pens! Gildea himself played well accompanied by larger than life Jim Scott, who still manages a decent game, despite golf, jet setting and holidays taking priority. Just this year he has visited Ireland for golf, Krakow (Poland) sight-seeing, Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans for singing lessons. Don’t know where you get the energy from Jim. He nevertheless opened the scoring for Jackals with a ton and D10 after the Kats had messed around looking for a double, Pat Abrams 2x100 totally worthless. The game swung the other way Paul Durrant finding the next two doubles plus 100, 140, Abrams contributing 140 for 1-2. A 138 from Durrant setting up D20 was converted by Alex Nikolov a throw or two later. The formidable pairing of Abrams 125,100,81 and Lee Maiden 81,100 appeared too strong for Scott and Mac McLean, however the latter´s ton followed by a 77 out from Scott (S19,S18,D20) shook the Kats, the score now 2-3. Danas Bobinas on S19,D8 made it 2-4 at the break. Despite 2x100,1x140 from Durrant against Alex Giles it was a scrappy leg won by the Kat 1-2 on D10 and D2, Giles taking the middle leg on D8. Scott arrived at the oche in the 9th match and promptly took the first on D9 after 2x100 and an 81 against the Bulgarian builder Nikolov. The Kat replied with 2x100 and D6 for 1 apiece. Scott flexed his ample muscles and responded with 2x100, the Kat a little behind requiring 124. Two treble twenties and a D2 for a 124 out made it 2-1 for Nikolov and the overall match for the Kats. Great darts from Scott, just ousted by a tremendous game shot. Maiden´s 2x100,D12 and D20 was good enough to take out McLean as was Graham Todd´s 3x95,D1 and D8 playing against Keith King 122 and the first leg on D2. Kenny Wilkinson made it 3 for the hosts with 95,114 and an excellent 81 out (T15,D18) plus D11 in the decider playing Bobinas.

Jim Scott practising prior to the start of his match

Hub Hyenas managed to complete a match this week, when they were visited by the Kings of Pint Depot. Gary Minor was the King´s only winner in a one sided encounter. Some very consistent scoring throughout was topped in his second leg victory over Jeff Harvey, Minor scoring 85,100,100,100,D16. Eddie Fozzard top scored with a 140 but little else for the Kings. A reasonable tally of 15 tons and ton pluses by the Hyenas proved too much for an out of form Pint Depot. Joe Miller amassed 5x100, Nick Spicer 132,125,2x100, were the main stays in a match where the visitors managed their only win in the final leg. Simon Williams´ 3 game shots and Joe Hawkins 2 game shots and a 125 assisted both Miller and Spicer. The Jaguars were missing hot shot Pat Schofield this week, she of the 158 game shot a week ago was absent as the visitors went down to Brett Badlove´s Que Pasa Kestrels. Wendy Hayward got the Jaguars off to a good start with a 125 and D2, but this early lead was the only time they were in front as Yvette Samuel D10 and Chris Miles S16,D20 made it 2-1 after the triples. Some tasty scores in the third from Tracy Simpson and Hilda Wilkinson 85,117 were not enough against Miles´ powerful scoring. Miles continued in the first doubles with a 113 and double to go further ahead. Lucy Maiden pulled one back for Jaguars on D14, only to lose the next via Gilly Kirby on D3 for 4-2 at the break. The hosts took 4 of the six singles through Badlove 116,D2, Miles D2, Samuel D1 and Kirby D4 who also amassed 5x80 pluses through the evening. Hayward and Lisa Ivill replied for the away side, Sharon Bugg outstanding but unable to convert some great scoring. Miles was deservedly man of the match. Tavern Drivers and Breakaways Bears both remain unbeaten and now have identical records to include leg difference. The Taverners found themselves 2-4 up at half time, Ian Brown taking out 48 using just two (S16,D16) in the third triple. John Dursley won the match for the visitors by the third single, but it was Ian Brown who was nominated man of the match. Breakaways looked pretty useful this term and were in a mean mood versus Evolution. Del Lister D6, Ivan Jones D5 and Mel Dawson D8 gave the Bears a 0-3 lead after the triples, but it wasn’t quite that easy as Paul Wilson 112 and Jak Doggatt 81,118 countered for the Evos. Wilson continued in the doubles with 3x80+, but couldn’t prevent Lister 2x80+, D4, Mike Snow D15 and Mike Smith D1 making it 6 without reply at half time. Debbie Williams saved the whitewash on D4 as the Bears ran riot winning 5 of the singles for 1-11. Jones 140,83,D17, Smith 85,100,D3, Lister 85,85,D2 being the pick of the singles bunch. ESTRELLA DAMM CRIBBAGE By Ron Sheldon 20th October and our 7th week and Dorothy’s Magpies still hog the top spot with their 6-3 win over Jim’s Sharks from La Siesta. For the Magpies it was that lucky pair of Martin & John with 3 wins while for the Sharks Anne-Marie & Hilary blobbed with a zero. Moving up to 2nd place Brian’s E&I Jaguars with their 6th consecutive win this week having 2 pairs with 2 wins each over Steve’s Steakhouse whose best were Sandra & Kevin with 2 wins. Also moving up 1 place to 3rd were Ayliff’s Galea “A” with a tight finish over Mick’s Lo Crispin whose pair of Mick & Carol slid to a zero score while 2 pairs for Ayliff gained 2 wins each. At the Galleon, Peter’s team just missed out against Keith’s E&I Merlins who had Keith & June with an unusual 3 wins while only Tony & Harry for the Galleon made it to 2 wins. Over at Catorce 3 pairs celebrated 2 wins each for John’s home team while Brian’s visiting Galea “B” team were amazed at Russell & Diane’s zero score. In Casa Ventura, Richard’s Ospreys had the highest score of the night with Phil & Sid maximising with 3 wins while Dave & Les W blobbed on zero for the other Les W’s Jays from Mr Smiths. My Ventura Falcons went to Mr Smiths to take on Alan’s Robins and came away with our 1st win in 4 weeks having 2 pairs with 2 wins each while Alan & Louise zeroed out without a win for the Robins. Finally in El Cortijo de Nacho, Ron’s Voles took a close win against Mike’s Peacocks from Izzys Bar with 2 pairs gaining 2 wins each while only Jean C & John for the Peacocks could match them with their 2 wins. AT LAST! – ‘PERFICK’

Medals for the girls at Petrer.

At 10am on October 19th when the competitors arrived for the fourth race day in the SAMM Autumn 2014 series they groaned to see yet another flat calm on the Mar Menor at Los Najeros. But within an hour the wind had come up to the forecast NE 8 – 10 knots just perfect for the SAMM mixed fleet. The first race was delayed when the course had to be re-set to avoid another course being set for a jet ski race out of Los Alcazares but, at 11 45am, 6 SAMM dinghies started, together with 4 small keel boats from the Spanish Disabled Group Tambien who had asked to join in, followed 5 minutes later by 4 SAMM cruisers, the 14 boats providing a grand spectacle. A great start by ‘Shoestring Dos’ Brian Murray/John Down saw them lead all the way to finish the four laps in 53 mins 23 secs, closely followed by ‘Shoestring Tres’ Ingo Wilson/Vernon O’Byrne in 55 mins 54 secs and the Catamaran ‘Hamour’ George Noden/Derek English/Graham Lewis in 63 mins 47 secs. But, when the handicaps were applied, ‘Hamour’ was declared the winner, with ‘Dos’ second and ‘Tres’ third on corrected time. The second race started at 2.45pm minus the Tambien boats and 1 dinghy, so 9 boats total. Again a great start by ‘Dos’ and the Martin, the later sailed by our paraplegic competitor Tony Jones with Neil Coates as his crew again followed after 5 mins by the ‘Hamour’ and the Sailfish 18 ‘Sirocco’. The again ‘Dos’ led the whole way and the finishing order was again ‘Dos’ in 48mins 45secs, ‘Tres’ in 52mins 43secs and ‘Hamour’ in 55mins 56secs with again the corrected time moving ‘Hamour’ into first place. A great days racing in conditions Pa Larkin would call just ‘Perfick’. For more infor on SAMM go to www.sailingmarmenor.com

This Saturday the 2014 – 2015 swimming season for the children kicked off with the “XV Trophy Villa de Petrer” at the Municipal Pool San Fernando, Petrer. Nine of the regions clubs entered a total of 362 swimmers in the event. Races varied from 50m Freestyle up to 400m Individual Medley's for all the age groups from Benjamin to Absoluto. Club Natacion Torrevieja entered 21 swimmers in different races and two of the girls won medals in their events, Zoe Connolly in her Infantil 100m Backstroke with a time of 1:13:47 and Vicky Pigneur in the Alevin 100m Butterfly with a time of 1:28:28. Other club members had some good swims with new personal bests, Jacob Ruiz knocking 4 seconds off his 100m freestyle time, Yuriy Lymar 2 seconds off his 100m Freestyle and Alexandra Amat 2 seconds off her 100m Freestyle. Nikita Mikhaylov improved by 4 seconds in his 100m Breaststroke and Amy Connolly by 6 seconds in her 100m Backstroke. Maybe the biggest challenge of the day came to new club member Vilja Therese Bilstad who competed in her first competition in Spain. Like all club members the first swim is very nerve racking and Vilja over came a mountain of nerves as she swam her 100m Freestyle , well done to Vilja and all Club Natacion Torrevieja swimmers.

Captain’s Meeting: We are planning a Captain’s Meeting before December, to set up the basics for the Pentathlon and ensure everyone understands what we are doing. You will all realise that our Tuesdays are taken up, so the meeting will need to be a Wednesday. Subject to one of the dates being available, the Meeting will be held at the Breeze Bar. Provisional dates Wednesday 19th or 26th November, and it would be appreciated if Captains and Vice Captains can let me know which date is most suitable for you. Gogertys, you really must attend this meeting, please. Obviously, the usual will apply, all Captain's and Vice Captains attend as usual, but if either of you are not able to attend you can send a Representative. Can you please let me know which date is suitable for you, so that I can arrange with Ana at the Breeze Bar accordingly, and, if not, the Meeting could be held at the Bull and Bush. In the meantime, it has been another good week everyone, keep it up and enjoy your darts. Pam Horton, 96 571 0066 Email: darts@arrakis.es

Monday, 27th October, 2014 ADVERTISING HOTLINE 966 73 0057 www.yourlocalnewspaper.info LEADER GUARDAMAR ENTERTAINS PRESTON PARK QUESADA BOWLS CLUB REPORT Preston Park Bowls Club (Brighton) stayed in the Hotel Playas De Guardamar, and thoroughly enjoyed their stay. The whole group loved the town and surrounding area. Led by group leader Hazel Irvine, and Bowling Abroad Tour Manager Steve Hibberd, the touring team played 4 matches against local clubs. Their first match at Quesada resulted in a loss on 4, and draw on 1 rink, but subsequent matches at Emerald Isles (1 winning rink), El Rancho, and Montemar (2 winning rinks at both), saw vastly improved performances. They were given a warm welcome from the clubs, and everyone enjoyed socialising with like minded people. Most of the group stayed on for an extra week of leisure, and went on excursions to Benidorm & Cartagena. Some also went to Guardamar market, where they found all sorts of bargains and gifts to take back home to England. This group have enjoyed

wandering around the town and parks, sitting in cafes with a refreshing drink (in the shade, away from the Costa Blanca sun), and admiring the surroundings - they were even tempted into tapas, and certainly made the most of their holiday! Preston Park are already discussing next years' tour. Locals in Guardamar should expect to see many more groups in their beautiful town, dressed in white.

On Saturday night we held a dinner dance at Paco`s where we were entertained by the brilliant Sunflower Valley once again good food and plenty of drinks made for a fantastic evening one that will be remembered for many years. the Neptunes were : Mary Elliott, Yvonne Mallaburn & skip Joe Elliott: Anne Mc Dowell, Dave Close, & skip Bill Hawthorn: Ed Mc Laughlin,Frank Close, & skip Alan Howcroft : Lyn Hawkins, Brian Smith & skip Bill Allen. I regret that I did,nt receive a match result from the Titans, I THINK the result was a loss for the Titans by 10-4 but I have idea of the individual winners. On tue 24th The E.I. Sent a team to play against Almeria B.C. a good coach journey, very pleasant opponents but a somewhat strange mat, we played rinks but went down by 4 rinks to 2. Our winners were Sheila Adams, John ( the pooligan) Pooley ,Marilyn Shatwell & skip Graham Roberts: Bill Allen, L. Vincent, Brian Donohoe, & skip Margaret Breen. Due to the heat & lack of shade we had a drinks break after 9 ends.! After the match we all retired to the Clubs Restaurant, Don't forget we have an E.I. Website which is full of useful info, it's run mainly by John Pooley & Dave Close.

Unfortunately our Winter League team took a bit of a drubbing from Quesada B.C. and lost 10 - 2, most of the games were close but at the close our only winning rink was Glynis Chapman, Brian Miller (who was exceptional) Barry Collins and led by Tom Hill. Our Oaks squad had no better luck in the Southern Division A league losing 12 -2 away at Montemar Matadors our only winning rink consisted of Jan and Brian Pocock with Trevor Vanner playing No 2, well done to them. Mike Edwards Elms team had a great result taking all the points from La Manga Crusaders with a massive shot difference of 195 to 52. Many congratulations to Heather Meston, Terry Lemon and skip Mike Kilby who counted all nine bowls on the first end to record a "Hot Shot". An strange situation developed with Chris Dewers Cedars squad at Emerald Isle when their opponents realised that they had in fact sent the wrong team to play at La Siests and the game was suspended

whilst their teams raced to their designated venues. Having established that they were now facing the correct team the match was restarted and we went on to take the points by 8 to 6. In the SABA Enterprise Division our two A division teams played each other with Maples taking the spoils by 9 points to 5 there were some very close games, the closest was Bobbie Vanner, Lynne Morris and Tom Hill who bowled a very honourable 15 all draw with Joan Oliver, Chris Dewer, and Mike Kilby. In the Voyager Division the Chestnuts finished the wrong side of an 8-6 scoreline to Quesada Diamonds but only lost the overall shots by 5, captain Dave Giddings lead the way with a 23 to 13 win he was supported by Pat Wray and Ann Butterworth. Finally the Saturday Bottle Club roll up was won by Charles Langlois.

Country Bowls Club By StJohn Broadhurst Sunday, 12 October saw the annual pre-season match between the Captain’s team and the President’s team. After some very competitive bowling the Captain’s team lead by Dennis Birkett were the winners over the President’s team lead by Alan Roscoe by 4 rinks to 2. The league season kicked off on Friday, 17 October, with the Ramblers travelling to Quesada to play the Swallows in the CBBA Southern league. The Swallows ran out winners, winning on five rinks to the Ramblers one. Winners for the Ramblers were Sheila Whitehall, Dennis Birkett, Peter Whitehall 21-16. Overall shots Ramblers 73 (2 pts) Swallows 144 (12 pts). The Flamingos started their campaign with an away game on Monday, 20 October in the SABA Discovery league, travelling to San Miguel to take on the Comets, who were winners by five rinks to one. Picking up the points for the Flamingos were Jean Turner, Del Gunning, Karen Kirk 19-18. Overall shots Flamingos 81 (2 pts) Comets 121 (12 pts). The Ramblers had home advantage for their second game in the Southern league division one against the San Miguel Jaguars, but that didn’t count for a lot at the end of the day, with the Jaguars wining on four rinks to the Ramblers one, with one drawn rink. Picking up the points for the Ramblers were Jean Turner, Del Gunning, Karen Kirk 25-15. Jo Wright, John Wright, Trevor Cox 14-14. Overall shots Ramblers 91 (3 pts) Jaguars 107 (11 pts). Whilst there was not much to celebrate on the rink, off the rink there was plenty to celebrate, with Country Bowls oldest bowler, Derek Nichols, celebrating his 93rd birthday on 14 October. Derek has been bowling since the early 90’s and has been with Country Bowls since 2009 along with his wife Jenny. Unfortunately Derek has had to stop bowling for a while as he was waiting for an operation to remove a cataract. This has now been done and Derek is hoping to return to the green as soon as he can. So from all at Country Bowls, happy birthday Derek and here’s to many more years of bowling. www.countrybowlsclub.com

ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY - 4th ANNUAL RAY BATTISTE TROPHY ALTORREAL GOLF – 21st OCTOBER 2014 This was the re-arranged date due to the weather (bad that is) on Tuesday 14th , who would believe it that golf had to be cancelled due to bad weather in Spain? As Victor Meldrew would say “I don’t believe it!” Well this time the weather was absolutely beautiful 28 degrees. The course was in good condition and improving with greens that were really true, probably some of the best greens we have played on this year. There is plenty of grass on the fairways but beware if you stray into the first cut, it’s the deepest! The competition was for the Ray Battiste Trophy; Ray was well known and respected in the golfing circles of the Vega Baja. His Trophy was well fought for in Medal play and with a very respectable nett 75, Mike Davies took the trophy from Ivie Davies with a nett 79, who are not relatives, although his Dad did have a bike!, Ivie claims it could have been closer (no that’s not relations) if he had not taken an eleven on the 12th. Excuses! Excuses! Well played Mike. Results: Gold Category - 1st: Mike Davies Nett 75. 2nd: Ivie Davies Nett 79, 3rd Lian Foley Nett 82 Silver Category: Geoff Wild Nett 81, Barney Hickey Nett 84, Janet Davies Nett 85. Trust me this is easier said than done and staying in the present is one of the hardest things to do in golf BUT it is something that all golfers must attempt to master. Just why is it so difficult? The answer is that during a long game of golf you have a lot of time on your hands to think and if you consider that your mind can change and switch from present to past and then future in an instant then what is it going to do in 5 hours? I bet you that you have regular playing partners who claim to be able to stay in the present at all times and then they say something like “As I stood on the 5th tee was thinking that this is a birdie hole”. You can see from this statement that the player is already thinking 3 or 4 shots in front and is therefore already in the future. I remind you again that to remain truly in the present a golfer should only be thinking about the next shot to be faced and where and how they are going to hit the ball to the target selected. The player should then hit the shot, find it, ACCEPT the result and then start thinking only about the next shot and then repeat this process of thinking until the ball is in the hole or until he runs out of holes. When you are on the golf course you should never evaluate how you are playing because this automatically means that you are thinking about the past and you must not judge or critique for the same reason. You must at no time keep a mental running score and start thinking about breaking 70,80,90 etc because this means that you are thinking about both the past and future in an instant. If you start to think about the past and the future there is a danger that you become protective, negative and tight with resulting bad golf. Avoid at all costs getting over excited or disappointed at your golf as a result of these past or future thoughts and concentrate on your pre-shot routine and playing each shot to the best of your ability. Just why is it so important to stay in the present? The answer is that golf requires a narrow focus on where you want the ball to go and ANYTHING that detracts from this focus damages your ability to perform. As an example in the 1961 US Masters Arnold Palmer walked up the 18th fairway leading the event and a close friend prematurely congratulated him on his win but he hit the ball into a greenside bunker, ultimately took a 6 and lost to Gary Player. The moment his friend congratulated him on his ‘win’ he lost focus on the task at hand and looked forward to the result with disastrous results. The best way to get around the golf course successfully is to simply play each shot at hand until you run out of holes and then add it up. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.

TORRY BATTLE TO 3RD CONSECUTIVE WIN CD TORREVIEJA ..........1 CD CASTELLON............0

Following two consecutive victories and, importantly, two consecutive clean sheets, Torry manager Galiana is at last looking optimistically at his team’s prospects for getting out of Tercera and gaining promotion to Segunda B, and with the midweek addition of Ferron, a goal scoring winger from Jumilla, going into the game against Castellon, he was hoping that another 3 pts would firmly establish him in the playoff mix come Sunday evening. Meanwhile with the arrival of men like Javi Selvas and Rubén Suárez, and after a spectacular start to the season, the big spending visitors had picked up just one draw from their previous 3 outings, so the home side went into this game in a confident mood which showed from the very start with quick and accurate passing and fast flowing football. The first opportunity fell to Burguillos on just 6 mins but his header was just off target. On the quarter hour it was the turn of the visitors when Carrascosa really should have done better than blast over with just Oscar to beat. However all the pressure was coming from Torry

which paid off with the opening goal on 20 mins, a fierce drive from Borja just inside the post. A 30 yard effort from Vicente ‘sniffed’ the Castellon goal on the half hour before Steve headed in just prior to the half time interval. Unfortunately, what we thought was Torry’s 2nd was ruled out for offside. It was a goal that they almost needed as the 2nd period saw a complete upturn in the Castellon form. The visitors took the game to Torry and with better finishing might have won comfortably. Efforts from Carrascosa, Selvas and Adria should all have ended up in the back of the net. But this was battling performance from the home side against a very good Castellon outfit, a game between two teams that will surely be in the mix come the end of the season. Next week a long trek up the AP7, away to struggling CD Acero

SANTA POLA DEFEAT HARD ON HORADADA SANTA SANTA POLA CF............2 CF............2 UD HORADADA ............1

Three first half goals, the opening couple to the home side, settled an entertaining match at the Manolo Macia, earning Santa Pola only their second win of the season. The Marineros were on the score sheet early too when, with five minutes gone, Nacho reacted first to a weak defensive clearance to side foot a looping shot over a stranded Horadada 'keeper from the edge of the penalty area. With the visitors battling back into the game well, Santa Pola doubled their lead courtesy of a simple finish by Ismael that had more than a hint of good fortune about it. More confusion in the Horadada back four saw the midfielder dance past the last blue shirted defender to slide the ball into an empty net beneath a despairing dive by Ros. Just about adequate defending would have seen Horadada alright, they weren't able to manage it, though, and instead found themselves two behind with half an hour gone. In truth, they weren't playing badly and Santa Pola were made to work hard to preserve their cushion, particularly in midfield where crunching tackles from both sets of players were the order of the day. Horadada got themselves right back in it on the stroke of half-time with, if he actually meant it, a sumptuous goal by club captain, Campillo. Raiding down the Santa Pola left, the Horadada stalwart had almost reached the penalty area when he unloaded a cross-cum-shot that evaded everyone and went in off the far post. It was the least the visitors

deserved. The second half, with no further goals, was simply a story of yellow cards and substitutions, although two moments of comedy goalkeeping by Ros might have seen Santa Pola add to their lead. At the other end, Ernesto went close late on when he hooked the ball over the Pola bar following a defensive scramble. Next week Santa Pola travel to Almoradi while Horadada host Benferri. Horadada’s Ernesto is stopped in his tracks

Local light heavyweight boxer Ricky Pow was in action on Friday night in Valladolid in a top of the bill contest against Eugen Stan. This was Ricky’s first outing since his defeat in Gran Canaria last May against Spanish number 1 Gabriel Campillo and he showed no signs of any hangover as, with cornerman Kiko, he battled his way to a six round points victory against the durable Romanian.
