Pedro Sánchez, will also address the delegates on Monday, with a talk in the afternoon in which he will give his view on the recovery of the Spanish economy, in the “Lights and Shadows”. Mariano Rajoy will no doubt be humble during his visit to the area, on account of recent revelations regarding corruption in his national party, as well as the historic cases affecting the regional government run by Fabra, and the larger local political groups in Torrevieja and Orihuela, both rocked with their own corruption cases. Rajoy will officially close the event on the Tuesday, with his speech scheduled to take place at 13:15. The conference is considered to be one of the most compelling business events in Spain. The organisers bring hundreds of businesses together from various sectors, each with an average turnover of 1.5 billion euro, with members such as Inditex, Mercadona, Ferrovial, Acciona, Planeta, Mango, Almirall and Barceló all contributing.

TORREVIEJA HARBOUR RENOVATION WORK STARTED Work has begun on regenerating a much needed side of the industrialised area of Torrevieja, as the harbour wall along the south side of the city is to be developed into pedestrian walkway. In July of this year, the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, announced that the work had been given the green light by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment for the company Becsa, a subsidiary of the former Lubasa, to carry out the 769,991 euro this first stage of regeneration work. The project is part of a five point action plan agreed with the municipal council, for renewing the area in the vicinity of the desalination plant. Collectively, the work has a budget of over 11.7 million euro. The aim of the work is to provide better access to the extension of the harbour wall, where a conveyor belt which carries salt from the Salinas to the cargo loading bay runs adjacent, to create a new area for relaxation and walking in one of the most ignored areas of the city. A walkway is being constructed along the breakwater of the harbour, which will provide 650 metres of pedestrian space, with a combination of tiled, paved and wooden flooring along the promenade, with new street lighting, drinking water fountains, litter bins, benches and wooden pergolas for shade along the way. In addition, there will be extra palm trees planted in the area leading up to the new paseo, along the access at Playa de los Náufragos. Meanwhile, the port areas of Torrevieja have come under scrutiny this week, after Spokesman for the Alternative Popular APTCe political
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM This coming Sunday, the second Sunday in November, is Remembrance Sunday, the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom that we enjoy today. On this day people from across much of the world will pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave Service men and women. Here on the Orihuela Costa, The Royal British Legion is commemorating Remembrance Sunday with a Church Service at the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras on 9 November. Everyone is welcome so why not come and join the members of the Branch as we pay our respects to
our nation’s war veterans in the year that marks the centenary of the start of one of the costliest conflicts in our history. There will also be a march past led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums The Service will also feature soloist Rebecca Holt while The Phoenix Concert Band will be providing accompanying music to the hymns. Everybody is welcome to attend both the service and the Wreath Laying Ceremony that will follow in the Garden of Remembrance where you are also invited to lay your own wreath or Poppy Cross, which you can obtain on the day. Seating will be provided outside the church by the Ayuntamiento. You are asked to be seated by 10.30.
group, Domingo Soler, reports that he believes the mayor will create a new space for 30 catering establishments and bars in the harbour area, that he believes will lead to a “cartel” in deciding who should be awarded the opportunity to operate them. Soler also feels that the development would be damaging to the existing bars and restaurants of the city, many of which have already closed down, many more of which are struggling already, and following on from the failed 2010 plans to renew the area, for which no company was prepared to offer the 80 million euro funding to create the project. Local hostelry associations have also voiced their concerns over the plans, but Dolón has denied the plans, saying that he has had several meetings with trade and hospitality associations, and that he plans to announce preliminary plans for the development of the harbour basin this week.

ZENIA BOULEVARD SOLD TO ALASKAN PENSION FUND The company Auchan will remain the majority share holder in the asset.
rench multinational company Inmochan is selling part of its flagship commercial centre, with an Alaskan pension fund set to purchase 50% of their share of the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre for 185 million euro. Inmochan currently own 80% of the commercial centre, the other 20% being owned by Alcampo. The company Auchan owns both Inmochan and Alcampo, and so still remain the majority share holder in the asset. Sources tell The Leader that this is common practice for the company, to build new centres and make them into a success, before selling shares to investors in order for them to fund future developments. Currently, China is one of their target markets. Part of this deal would also see two retail parks in Portugal handed over to the Alaskan investors, and would see their revenues boosted by some 150 million euro. As a result of the sale, the Alaska Permanent Fund would own 50% of the Orihuela Costa complex. Inmochan and Alaska Permanent Fund will form a joint venture to control the three campuses that make up the operation. This is the first time the Alaskan pension fund has invested in Spain, having recently acquired the Golden Square Shopping Centre in Warrington. The sale is seen by many analysts of indicative of

troubled times in the retail and commercial sector in the province, after five similar commercial centres exchanged hands last year, all taken over by different investment groups, all taking advantage of reduced prices in the sector, looking for attractive returns on that investment. However, other industry analysts say the opposite, reporting that it is due to the popularity and growth of these centres that makes them viable assets for investment companies, who are almost guaranteed a return, without the risk to their finances. As the largest commercial centre in the Alicante Province, the Zenia Boulevard has just celebrated its second birthday, and currently plays home to a variety of major retail outlets such as Alcampo, Decathlon, Leroy Merlin and Media Markt, amongst many others, and there is an area dedicated to food and drink. In addition, it has a large car parking facility and is located close to the motorway network. Footfall in the centre has increased by 16% in the year from September 2013 to September of this year, with a staggering 11 million people recorded as having visited the centre during the year. The Zenia Boulevard has an area of 161,000 square metres, of which 80,000 is leasable area, which makes it the largest shopping and leisure centre in the province of Alicante. The venue opened in September 2012 and has 150 stores, with a commercialized area greater than 96% of capacity.

CORVERA HAS WEEK OF GROWING SUPPORT ollowing last week´s revelations that Corvera airport is continuing to assume that operations will be able to take place soon, this week has seen other officials confirm that the new Murcia Regional Airport may shortly be a reality, albeit at the expense of San Javier. However, despite the growing support, the European Commission has again delayed its decision on the financial operation of Corvera airport and given a further extension to their consultation period, with a provisional date for their decision now expected on the 18th of December. This additional delay has increased restlessness and the impatience in the regional government, which is already considering alternatives to the possibility of opening the airport on the 2nd of April. This latest delay suggests that the equity loan approval will rest with the new Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, a Danish politician who is replacing Spaniard Joaquín Almunia in early November. At the same time that the further delay was announced, the Minister of Development of the Spanish National Government, Ana Pastor, responded to questions in the Senate and said that her department will do everything possible to ensure better connectivity in the region and open the airport at Corvera. The Minister was responding to questions raised by the socialist, Ramón Ortiz, as to whether the government consider it essential that the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia financially compensate AENA for the closure of the Murcia San Javier airport. Noting that the current airport has excellent facilities and has served more than a million passengers this year, Pastor pointed out that with the opening of Corvera airport, the service to all citizens will be substantially improved. The Regional Minister for Development, Manuel Campos, has stated that with the testing and operational activities continuing, and with a second inspection of the facilities scheduled for December when flight calibrations will be performed, he is confident that “December, 15”, will be the date when the certification process will be complete and the airport certified tor opening. For their part, the airport authority, AENA; has said that it will not place any obstacles in the way of the opening of Corvera and subsequent closure of San Javier. They also state that they have informed the competition authorities of this, and that they are “more than willing” to meet the requirements of reverting San Javier back to military use, provided

that the legitimate interests of AENA, both in financial terms and the needs of its employees in the San Javier airport are respected. AENA will sign the closure order for San Javier, so long as they have the approval from the competition authority. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works and the Corvera airport concessionaire, Aeromur, are continuing with the airport certification program, which will have an initial staff of 60 employees, twenty of which have already been hired. The operational template should be available in mid-February, which would see the opening of the airport to flights approved by the State Agency for Aviation Safety. All staff must then be briefed and trained in airport operational procedures and manuals, and will face the final inspections relating to safe operation of aircraft and the airport facility. This template for operation includes procedures and methods of work for everybody from the cleaning staff to air traffic controllers, although it is independent to the checks required of workers assigned to commercial firms to be installed in the terminal and auxiliary enterprises. the European Commission will give its decision on the financial operation of Corvera airport on 18 December.
had accumulated almost two million dollars in a Swiss bank account. The High Court judge Eloy Velasco has been investigating the origin of his fortune for a year, and suspects that it may come from illegal commissions paid by builders for fraudulent re categorizing of land and rigged construction bids while Granados was mayor of Valdemoro, a town of 72,000 residents just south of Madrid, between 1999 and 2003. The investigation is centered mainly in town halls and regional governments in Madrid and Leon in the centre of the country and Murcia and Valencia in the east. SACKED PP SEC-GEN ARRESTED IN ANTI-CORRUPTION RAIDS In the biggest anti-corruption sweep in the country's history, dozens of people across the whole of Spain were arrested on Monday, many of them senior politicians from the ruling Partido Popular. According to the anti-corruption prosecutor's office, following the award of government contracts, they allegedly diverted at least €250 million of public money received from corrupt business men into their own pockets. The most senior official taken into custody by the Guardia Civil was Francisco Granados, a former secretary-general of the governing Popular Party, who resigned in February following reports in the daily newspaper El Mundo that he

public contracts in the last two years. The mass raids targeted 51 senior politicians alleged to be part of a huge corruption network, of which the 35 arrested will now face charges of money laundering, embezzlement and influence peddling. According to sources close to the case, dubbed Operation Púnica, the network made use of contracts aimed at bringing down electricity costs for municipalities, from which illegal commissions of two or three percent were charged. The French firm Cofely and its affiliate in Spain were the major beneficiaries of the contracts handed out for works and public services. Civil Guard investigators said they were now planning to take statements from the suspects, most of whom spent last Monday night in custody in the Madrid towns of Tres Cantos and Las Rozas The probe is the latest in a string of corruption scandals that have hit Spain's political parties, banks, football clubs and even members of the royal family. The crackdown also resulted in 400 bank accounts being frozen and around 260 companies are also being investigated. This new raid is only latest in series of corruption probes damaging image of Spain’s ruling party and now, with municipal and regional polls, and then a general election, scheduled for next year, Spain’s ruling Popular Party (PP) fears that constant media coverage of these judicial investigations involving a number of their senior figures are inflicting damage that could harm its chances of re-election
Spanish budget airline Volotea, the brainchild of former Vueling founders, Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros, will open their first base in Spain in 2015. This first location is likely to be in the north of Spain for the Barcelona based firm, with plans to open up to five bases among the Spanish airports, looking at spreading to the east, south and islands. Currently, Volotea‘s aircrafts spend their time at Venice, Palermo, Nantes and Bordeaux, with Strasbourg expected to be added soon.
EAST TO SOUTH Qatar Airways plans to fly from Barcelona to Latin America, but only if it will not take away business from either Iberia or any other Oneworld airline alliance, which it joined a year ago, according to CEO Akbar Al Baker. ”If we see opportunities, we would, but always in total agreement with Iberia, an IAG group company which Qatar Airways belongs”, he explained on Tuesday at the Aviation Partnership Summit. WOOD YOU BELIEVE IT? Spain´s national competition auditor has broken up a business cartel which had 24 wooden pallet companies price fixing the market between 2005 and 2011. The companies were given a 4.7 million euro fine which offsets their profits during the operation.

GOOD ADVICE AND A QUALITY INSTAL WITH SATELLITES DIRECT Satellites Direct have now been trading in the area for over 7 years. They have over 30 years experience with staff that has been employed by SES Astra and with over 30 years experience their knowledge is second to none. Owner Nigel says, “I think the reason behind our success is our honesty, the quality of install and the top of the range products that we use. Obviously the fact that we have a shop also means that our customers always know where we are and we can be contacted easily.” All of our installers are fully qualified, extremely conscientious and fully insured and we all know that there is a big difference between the people who take pride in their work and those who just rush onto the next job, where quantity is rather more important to them than quality! We will always advise on the best products to use, which does not necessarily mean the most expensive and where we can save the customer money we will do, however, we will always recommend the best products available to do the best install. Satellites Direct have just released their new super strength dish. Nigel Says "We have actually promoted the Famaval 1.4 mtr dish for some time and we can still supply them if the client wishes, but the new super strength from Portugal is giving amazing signal strengths far beyond what we achieved with the Famaval."

Signals are measured in quality percentage and db gain, (channels will break up at 6.5db gain). Depending on your location a normal 1.4 mtr dish will give about 7- 8 db gain on BBC1 (one of the weakest channels), while a high gain dish will give around 7.5 - 8.5 db gain. However, with the new super strength we would expect at least 8, but we have actually achieved a massive 10.5 db gain. This is only just below the strength of a 1.9 mtr dish!!! We are so pleased with this system which allows customers to have a strong signal and fully working system for only 399€ fully installed. We also use a twin output LNB so we can feed the signal into a second room, a high quality HD recording receiver and a solid 60mm bracket so there is no wind bounce.
Indeed all brackets are drilled before cement is pumped into the wall. As such we have never had a dish come loose!! Satellites Direct also supply a range of receivers starting at just 99€ for a full HD receiver. They also have twin tuners to record and watch a second channel and receivers with internet TV and Movies On Demand etc. Nigel Says “The internet software on some receivers is great fun, you can watch lots of movies for free, get IPlayer or many other channels that you wouldn’t normally get, however we do not recommend only streaming live TV through the internet (IPTV) as this can be prone to buffering and low picture quality. Therefore a receiver that does both is ideal! For more info on any of our products contact the showroom on 966 72 3792

NOT SUCH A VICTORY FOR CALA MOSCA ALICANTE HOSPITALS The Official Journal of the Generalitat Valenciana has published a resolution on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment, which protects part of the land at Cala Mosca. After a long battle against the development of the last green area of the Orihuela Costa, the Cala Mosca area plays home to two endangered species. There are around 5,000 specimens of the Cabeza de Gato plant, also known as the “cat head”, as well as a snail known as Tudorella Mauritanica. Because of
the status of these endangered elements, the construction of 1,500 homes would have caused considerable environmental damage, and is therefore blocked on the two sites, “due to the presence of a significant population of Cabeza de Gato, a protected plant under the category of Vulnerable in the Spanish Catalogue of Endangered Species and the Valencian catalogue of Endangered Species of Flora”. However, the decision does not offer anywhere near enough protection to the land, nor does it provide any need for the promoter to reduce the number of
homes they can build on the area, in fact the 1,500 properties can still be constructed, but may well now have to be built higher than first expected, thus blocking the view and spoiling the visibility of the coastline than was ever first planned. Whilst applauding the decision to provide some protection so far, the councillor for the environment, Manuel Gallud of the Los Verdes green party of Orihuela, has already announced an appeal, as the government team believe that just protecting those two plots “is not enough to fully protect the endangered species”. Similarly, the C.L.A.R.O. group, who have led the campaign for protection as far as the European Union, initially welcomed this statement and recalled their activities to end the coastal construction, then realising the reality of the ruling, they are now appalled and note with “astonishment and disbelief”, that the Government Order does not cover anywhere near the range and natural expansion where the largest population of the protected species cited above live. The approved and protected area follows the demarcation of the maritime public domain line and does not cover the two main areas of concern. C.L.A.R.O. considers this a “remarkable CONTRADICTION” in the declaration of protection and will be a “mortal blow to the population of the cat's head jarilla” since they will “not enjoy the same degree of protection” as the coastline, which is hardly used by the plant population, whose home will be converted into play areas for children and part of the urban landscape. Bob Houliston from C.L.A.R.O. will be talking to Mark Nolan on Exite Radio just after 10:00 on Monday. Tune your radio to 93.1fm, or listen via the internet at www.exiteradio.com, to hear his views on this subject and many more.
NOVEMBER FOCUS ON NATURAL PARKS Throughout November, the natural parks of La Mata and Torrevieja are offering 15 activities, with the aim of highlighting the unique environmental and educational benefits of the area. In schedule there are activities such as bird watching and nature trails, workshops, lectures and charity activities, with the main focus being to raise the awareness and value of the rich natural and cultural heritage that houses the Natural Park of La Mata and Torrevieja.. Taking time out from promoting the destruction of
the natural park after approving the construction of a new DIY store which threatens one of the most important bird colonies in the world, the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, highlighted the enormous tourism and environmental values ??of the Natural Park, which in 2013 attracted over 13,000 visitors and in 2014, from January to September, has already seen a total of 18,500 visitors. Of the 15 scheduled activities, 10 will be during the weekend, and all of them aimed at families to enjoy in this very unique area of Torrevieja.

The General de Alicante has been recognised as the best service in the field of dermatology. Alicante´s Hospital de Sant Joan won two awards, the Best Service in Pneumology and another for the oncology department. Elche´s Vinalopó hospital has been honoured for service in the field of both Allergology and Clinical Immunology. It is the ninth time that the awards have been presented to the medical institutions of the area, with more than 630 health and service departments across the country fighting for a total of 41 prizes, including two special awards. Three Alicante health centres were also awarded for their excellence. The Rheumatoid Arthritis unit of La Fe was recognised for its work in the area of clinical nutrition, rheumatology, infectious and urological disease. The Nephrology unit at La Ribera was awarded for their service contribution, as was the major pain unit at the Clínico de Valencia. In total, the region has received eleven awards from 39 categories, which places the area at the head of the country in the number of awards for quality patient care. The Minister of Health, Manuel Llombart, spoke of the “quality of hospital services in the Region” of Valencia, and recalled how these awards are “important” in recognising the index value of quality of care to patients, and the “important role of health professionals”. The General de Elche hospital came third place in the final for its work in transplants and Schizophrenia. The Vinalopó hospital was also in third place in its final class for Dermatology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Intensive Care, Retina and Vitreous treatments and fourth place of their emergency department. Torrevieja came fourth in Dermatology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Patient Care.
The government has called for an increase in the allowance of Bluefin tuna that the EU fleet of fishing boats can catch, and are supporting an increase of up to 23,500 tonnes in two years. Minister of Agriculture, Isabel García Tejerina, said that the increase would be “a positive signal” and that Spanish fishermen deserve “a fair reward”, on account of the Bluefin Tuna Recovery Plan being carried out successfully. Overfishing has threatened the existence of Bluefin tuna and Spain catches almost 20% of the total stock quota. Spanish Bluefin tuna exports in 2013 generated a total of 37.7 million euro, of which almost 90 per cent were fresh products.

Experts are concerned that the long-term effects could have wider significance as emerging diseases threaten all animal groups.

TICKET TO RIDE A theatre in Madrid has come up with an ingenious way of reducing IVA payments, by offering pornographic magazines for sale, which come with a complimentary theatre ticket. The aim is to criticise the government´s cultural tax policy, thus proving that pornography has “more support from the government” than the arts.
BROCCOLI THREAT Broccoli production in Spain is starting a slow recovery, as the biggest export season approaches. However, the severe drought throughout the summer is expected to have an adverse effect of the vegetable yield, especially in the Murcia region. Francisco Mula, general director of Agrícola Santa Eulalia, said, “The lack of water resources is increasingly affecting our crops, reducing the yield, which ends up taking a toll on our profit margins”, and may result in higher prices to the consumer. Some 90% of the 23,000 tonnes of broccoli produced by the Totana based company are exported to countries such as the UK, sold mostly through supermarket chains.

ONE IN FOUR TOP TOYS FOR CHRISTMAS NOW IN POVERTY The Catholic run charitable organization Cáritas has presented its latest poverty report this week, revealing that one in four people in Spain are now living in poverty. According to the report, there has been an increase of 4.4 million people facing the worst of the financial crisis since 2008, with the number of people now living in poverty reaching a record 11.7 million. Of those people, the report says that 77% have no work and 61% are struggling to find a place to live. The report also says that half a million families in Spain have no source of income. The official unemployment figure in Spain is around 23%, and despite the country showing signs of recovery, the report suggests that, “there are no signs that the tendency towards worsening social problems has not stopped”. Cáritas spokesperson, Sebastian Mora, said, “Economic growth on its own does not lead to equality”, adding, “What is clear is that to fight poverty and social exclusion, you need to boost social protection. It is true that there have been programmes and plans...but these efforts are absolutely insufficient”. During their current term in office, the government of Mariano Rajoy has been criticised for its policies that have led to the crisis worsening for the more vulnerable member of society, with increased taxes, frozen public salaries and severe cuts to public services such as education and healthcare.
WAGONS ROLL INTO HORADADA The people of Pilar abandoned their cars and motorcycles at the weekend as the town’s more environmentally friendly equestrian festival took place with twenty horse carriages parading along Calle Mayor. The procession was made up by over 100 people who rode in horse drawn carriages on a journey that began about 11 am lasting for over two hours as it wound its way around the municipality carrying the queens and the ladies of the town. Many of the participants were dressed in traditional costumes with the girls and ladies weaving flowers into their hair to add to the blaze of color that the spectacle provided The festive atmosphere was complemented with the presence of ladies weaving lace in the town hall square while others demonstrated the dying art of sewing and darning to the many young onlookers.
As we are now in the penultimate month of the year, our attentions may well turn to Christmas and what to buy the little ones this year. Although many people start the gift shopping relatively early, perhaps taking advantage of a bargain or two, we have to at least acknowledge that the toy industry already know what the top sellers are likely to be, and, therefore, what the children of 2014 may well be expecting Santa to deliver. Barbie is making quite a comeback once again, not bad considering she just turned 55, having first launched in American on the 9th of March, 1959. Barbie Sparkle Studio is looking like one of the hot choices for this year, retailing at £25 in the UK. Another old favourite still doing the rounds is LEGO, although it has almost completely transformed from the imagination rich kits of 40 years ago, to the devised sets that construct into a predefined model of today. LEGO has also embarked on a huge licensing and distribution drive, launching everything from films and games, as well as the construction toys. Both the LEGO City and LEGO Star Wars advent calendars are in the top selling charts on Amazon already. It is one of their toys from the aforementioned film that is set to be the top choice for this season however, with the LEGO Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP, not a typo by the way, the actual name of the kit, retailing at £80, or the slightly cheaper computer games based characters in the LEGO Minecraft Crafting Box, at £50. Also celebrating their fortieth year is Playmobil, who are not so bold as to embark on product licensing and branding, but softly continuing to encourage imagination, whilst focusing on the less brutal imagi-
nary world or war and death, top of their gift list this year is expected to be the £30 Playmobil TakeAlong Fairyland box set. However, the big “must have” toys this year, both in Europe and the US, are expected to be based on the Disney film Frozen. It is perhaps not surprising that Disney are keen to recoup some of their investment in the animated film, the film already generated over a billion dollars in ticket sales in the first six months, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The Frozen Elsa Musical Snow Wand retails at £15, Frozen Sparkle Princess Elsa Doll at around £20, puzzles, gift-wrap, costumes, stickers, cake decorations, plush toys, bags and even an umbrella all adding to the collection on sale. However, lurking in the background is a potential surprise hit, as Ebola is gaining popularity too, it seems like everybody wants it, although in plush, soft-toy form, rather than the viral killer, as an American toy manufacturer which specialises in stuffed versions of some of the world´s deadliest microbes reported selling out of its stockpiles of Ebola virus, amid the worst recorded epidemic of the Ebola disease. But, if you are looking for some educational fun for all the family, one game you might certainly want to look out for is called Doggie Doo Game. Currently retailing at half-price on Amazon, the £12 game asks players to throw the dice to determine how often they squeeze a plastic dachshund's lead. Each squeeze pushes some plasticine poop nearer to fruition and when the deed is done the player holding the lead cleans up the poop with a little spade. The first person to scoop 3 poops wins the game. Simple, harmless and educational fun!

COST OF BRITISH DRIVING LICENCE SLASHED Following a public consultation which closed a little over 2 months ago the British Government has announced that the cost of obtaining a driving licence will be cut from the end of October with prices slashed by up to 32% as new drivers see cost of a provisional licence drop by 32% from £50 to £34. There will be a similar reduction for online renewals with motorists paying £14 instead of £20 to renew their licences online every 10 years Transport Minister Claire Perry said: "Thanks to DVLA making large scale savings to their running costs, we have been able to cut the cost of the driving licence which will save drivers and businesses £150 million over the next 10 years." Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander also said that the move was part of "giving savings back to the taxpayer". As well as the cut in the cost of driving licences, the fee for driver tachograph cards, which record information about driving time, speed and distance and are used by businesses to monitor how far their staff drive, will fall from £38 to £32. Ministers say new drivers will save £82.2million over the next decade, with businesses and motorists expected to save in total £150million between now and 2024. The drop in driving licence costs comes as car insurance went up for the first time in more than two years in the last quarter, according to the latest AA index. The average cost for an annual comprehensive motor insurance policy rose by £6 to £531 in the last quarter. The motoring organisation found efforts to clamp down on fraudulent claims have not delivered the savings that insurers had anticipated. The DVLA processes one million ‘first licence’ applications every

SPANISH TRUCKERS PLAN SEVENTY-TWO HOUR STRIKE The Spanish road hauliers association has announced a second strike, which will commence on the 17th of November, and last for at least 72 hours, unless the Spanish government return the money raised through the additional tax on fuel known as the “health cent”.
year, with more than 77 per cent of these applications made by 17 to 24 year olds. Transport Minister Claire Perry said: ‘The cost of driving, especially for young drivers, can be significant and we are committed to cutting costs where we can. ‘Thanks to DVLA making large-scale savings to their running costs, we have been able to cut the cost of the driving licence which will save drivers and businesses £150million over the next 10 years.’ Cost cuts: The new fees showed here are for motorists applying for driving licences online Some 2.1million photocard licences are renewed every year, meaning motorists already on the road would save £61.3million collectively over a decade. Businesses make another 85,500 renewals a year and will save £2.44million over 10 years, while cost cuts to tachographs will save businesses another £3.58million over the decade. Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said: ‘Giving savings back to the taxpayer is a key element in this government's drive for a stronger economy and a fairer society. That's why we're slashing the cost of getting a driving licence and giving it straight back to young people and businesses, saving £150 million over 10 years.’ Other cuts being considered include vehicle first registrations and duplicate registration certificates. Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said: ‘The Department for Transport's own surveys show the three things that do most to put young people off driving are cost, cost and cost: of learning, of insurance and of buying a car. ‘Incomes for teenagers have been under downward pressure at the same time as motoring costs have generally been rising. This move is welcome.’
The strike was agreed by all employers and business associations of the sector at the meeting of the National Committee for Road Transport in the freight segment on Tuesday. After the meeting, all industry associations signed a manifesto denouncing the “delay” by the tax authority in processing the repayment of amounts collected by the health cent, since the EU courts ruled the tax as contrary to Community law in a hearing in February. The manifesto read “The Tax Office has uselessly delayed the process and has tried to fool the transport sector with the sole intention to glossing over the exact fulfilment of the judgment, appropriating money that it is required to return”, therefore declaring the industrial action from the 17th of November, on account of “the Government not modifying its initial decision and has not ordered the strict enforcement of the judgment in fair terms”. The “health cent” was added to fuel in order to help the government finance the National Health Service, however, the minister for finance has said that the refund of the money will cost the public administration some 400 million euro. The strike is likely to affect distribution of everything from food and clothing to fuel and manufacturing.

TORREVIEJA SHOWS ALZHEIMER´S SOLIDARITY Partido Popular spokesperson in Torrevieja, Joaquín Albaladejo, has raised a notion through the government to declare Torrevieja as a city with solidarity with Alzheimer´s.
Solidaria con el Alzheimer”, is to raise awareness of the plight of those who suffer the condition, both directly and indirectly, and serve as an example to other municipalities to support the same.
Albeit an institutional gesture, the aim of the title, “Ciudad
Albaladejo also stressed that by recognizing the status supports
the initiative of the CEAFA, the Confederación Española de Asociaciones de Familiares de Personas con Alzheimer y otras Demencias, explaining how Alzheimer´s is the most prevalent type of dementia, that currently affects 3.5 million people in Spain. He continued to explain that Alzheimer´s is a socio-sanitary issue, for which there is still no effective treatment, and yet it affects not only those who suffer the symptoms, but their families, friends and carers. The problem of the disease is expected to double in the next 20 years, mainly due to the higher life expectancy of the population, with direct and indirect costs labelled at around 30,000 euro per year. The City of Torrevieja therefore wishes to record its concern towards this major problem declaring a “City of Solidarity with Alzheimer´s”. Part of the former railway station buildings in Torrevieja house one of the main Alzheimer’s resource and help centres in the area, run by the AFA, or La Asociación De Familiares Y Amigos De Enfermos De Alzheimer De Torrevieja, which has been operating from the city for the last 10 years.

ON TV THIS WEEK, WE REMEMBER e start this week´s review with a trip across the pond to America. You might remember us talking about Desperate Housewives and Devious Maids the other week, well this week it has been announced that their creator, Marc Cherry, has been commissioned to create a new series based on the Phantom of the Opera. No more details are available at this early stage, other than TV execs telling us that it will certainly not be a musical based show. Back to home shores, and this week the BBC is dedicating a fair amount of time in order to “pause to remember the fallen”, during their focus on Remembrance Week. Tony Hall, Director-General of the BBC, says: “It is incredibly important that every year the BBC marks Remembrance Week with a range of programming on TV, radio and online that brings the nation together and helps us pause to remember and commemorate those that made the ultimate sacrifice. This year has the added poignancy of the centenary of the start of the First World War and, as part of our programming, we will continue to tell the stories from that conflict to new generations.” We already mentioned The Passing Bells last week, a powerful five-part drama, which sees the conflict of the First World War unfold through the eyes of two very ordinary young men. BBC One will also have a Countryfile special which explores Word War One’s lasting legacy on the landscape of the Western Front and the part played by those on the

Meanwhile, in The People Remember, which is on every morning this week, Sophie Raworth and former Army Officer Andy Torbet honour heroes of war both on the battlefield and on the home front. The programmes, based at the Imperial War Museum in London, feature surprise reunions, inspiring stories of bravery. On BBC One on Saturday the 8th of November, in the presence of HM The Queen, senior members of the Royal Family, political and military leaders, Huw Edwards presents The Royal British Legion's annual Festival of Remembrance which pays tribute to all victims of war and conflict. This year’s Festival will welcome 100 Normandy veterans as we pay tribute to the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The Festival commemorates the First World War Centenary with the cast of War Horse, and Joss Stone performs the official Poppy appeal single – 'No Man’s Land'. The Band of HM Royal Marines will give a unique performance to mark their 350th Anniversary, there will be a display from the Queen’s Colour Squadron and all perform alongside The Massed Bands of the Household Division and The Countess of Wessex’s String Orchestra. The Festival includes the traditional two-minute silence as poppy petals fall from the roof of the Royal Albert Hall, each representing a life lost in war. On Sunday the 9th of November, BBC One is live
from The Cenotaph, where Her Majesty The Queen leads the nation’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations. The Prime Minister, leading politicians, representatives of many of the world’s religions, dignitaries from around the Commonwealth and military leaders join thousands of veterans from countless conflicts for the two-minute silence at 11 am UK time, the service and march past. All gather to remember those men and women who have died serving their country. The film War Horse will premiere for BBC One on Remembrance Sunday. Stephen Spielberg directs this epic adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s bestselling book/play with a cast that includes Peter Mullan, Jeremy Irvine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Watson, David Thewlis and Tom Hiddleston. In other future news this week, Channel 4 has announced a new political drama, Coalition. Bertie Carvel, Mark Dexter and Ian Grieve will star as Nick Clegg, David Cameron and Gordon Brown in this new, original drama which also features Mark Gatiss as Peter Mandelson. Written by James Graham, the acclaimed playwright behind political hits Privacy, This House and Tory Boyz, Coalition charts the emotionally wrought, politically-charged and often frenzied moments which led to Nick

We meet the men starting their Broadmoor journey, others who are responding well to treatment and some whose lack of cooperation keeps them from moving on. There are also interviews with the staff who have to deal with the hospital’s most volatile patients and run a daily risk of assault. 00:45 Rugby Highlights. Another perfect day for golf on Thursday as we played Octobers President Trophy. Riquelme was in great condition, greens fairways and my pet subject bunkers were good. Well done to the green keepers for the hard work they done for golfers after the heavy rains a few week ago. Nick Brooks seems to be storming away again the Trophy and Player of the Year competition, is there no holding him back. I had the pleasure of playing with him, and watching his golf. Naturally he won the day with 36 pt's. We played full handicap stableford,4 N/t/p's, and the usual twos pot . Results were pins. No 5 Jeff Luke, No 7 Nigel Cawthra, No 15 Trevor Connally, No 17 Terry Fitzgerald. There were two winners of the two's pot, Jeff Luke and Marie Fegan.Winner on the day was Nick Brooks with 36 pt's, Nigel Cawthra won the raffle. Thanks to James who sponsored the raffle, also thanks to his staff at Gogarty's

EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON his opponent who finished the job on D10 and D8. Del Kingsbury gave his usual captain´s performance, he should play more, winning in two straight with 2x140,99,D4 and D20. O´Rourke looked impressive and determined in the penultimate leg, opening with 140,100 and a 76 out (S16,S20,D20) against Maiden´s single ton. Another high score from the Buster a 125 this time wasn’t sufficient as Maiden blasted 3x95 plus a ton and D18 to level. O´Rourke couldn’t take advantage of the throw in the decider, letting in the Kat with 140,81,85 and D8 for the hosts 9th point. Captain Shirley Roberts looked like gaining Busters third point when she took the first leg against Todd and had darts in the second for 0-2. A D3 for a relieved Todd in the second and some hefty scoring in the third, 95,115 and D10 just outgunned the popular Roberts for a slightly flattering result for the Kats.

180´s: Peter Ayres (Porter House), Pat Abrams (Meerkats) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) This week´s highest finish: 116 Pat Abrams (Meerkats) Busters didn’t travel too well this week, losing their unbeaten record to the Meerkats at their Villamartin venue. It wasn’t quite the anticipated match, 30 ton pluses and a further twenty 80 pluses looked reasonable enough but some scruffy finishing contributed to a weighted score line. Mark Filer´s opening 100, was immediately cancelled out by Paul Durrant´s 140, fellow Kat Graham Todd scoring 117. Babs Warren kept Busters in the running for the first leg, but was pipped by Alex Nikolov taking out tops. No 3 figure scores at all in the second until requiring 116 Pat Abrams returned S20,T20,D18 for the Kats to go 2 up. Abrams figured again in the third with a 122 and D10, Filer´s 100 not enough. Lee Maiden livened up in the first pair after an atrocious start, joining Nikolov in the high scoring leg, completed by the Bulgarian. Peter O´Rourke´s 2x100 in the fifth leg looked likely to gain the visitors first point, unfortunately Durrant used just two arrows for a 78 out (T18,D12) after a countering ton. Two more tons from Busters in the 6th, 1 apiece from Filer and Shirley Roberts, just edged out Todd and Alan Ostrowski, Filer completing the 601 on D5. An out of sorts Ray Harvey managed his only 100 of the evening in the opening singles against Nikolov, who didn’t fare much better in the scoring department. His finishing however was pretty sharp, taking out 74 in the first and 70 in the second (T10,S20,T10) to earn the Kats at least a point. Next leg deserved to go to three, indifferent finishing allowing Durrant 131,140,100,D2 and D8 to overcome a spirited performance from the amiable Paul Gurrie 100. With the match won, both sides expected fireworks when Abrams faced Filer in the 9th leg. It didn’t happen unfortunately, Filer mustered a top score of only 94, whilst Abrams found a 140 and 100 but no doubles which were left to
Porterhouse entertained the Hyenas from Villamartin´s Hub bar and what a ding dong. Both teams were without their captains, Simon Williams enjoying a wedding and Ray Sanderson fixing his car after refusing to start. The Porters were also without Brian Nash after last week´s serious tumble but apparently he may well be making an appearance next week, recovered or not. We wish him well. The Porters will also be without the Sandersons´ son Paul from next week returning to work in Hanoi Vietnam. He will be missed as this week´s performance suggests. The Porters got off to a steady start, winning two of the three triples available, although it was Hyena Nick Spicer taking the first with D2 plus a ton. Shaun Smith added a further ton in the next, but Sanderson 100 and then youngster Sid Cross taking out 70 (S18,S20,D16) levelled leaving Ray Hayes on D16 to take the lead, despite tons from Smith and Joe Miller. Smith levelled the match score in the first pairs, the Porters taking the next via Sanderson 100 and Cross D4. Spicer D20 made it all square at the break, with the draw a likely outcome. Sanderson showed what the Porters will be missing in a cracker of a match, taking out Joe Miller 2-1 for a slender lead. The Hyenas 2x100 and D18, not good enough as Porterman hit 139,95,100,121,D11 and a tasty 73 out (S19,S14,D20). Spicer faced the veteran and sometime funny man Peter Ayres in the next and duly levelled the match with a fine performance against the joker, 3x100,140,D4 and D8 proved a bridge too far for Ayres, although opportunities were available after scores of 133 and 97. Another good match followed Miller v. Cross, the latter taking the first on D5 and D15 in two, the Hyena recording a 135. The tie was levelled on D16, after a 121 from Cross and a ton from his opponent. The third was a little tentative, no big scores, just a D4 from Miller. John Saunders made short work of Con Rouffignac winning the first two legs on D19,D16 the Porter replying with a 107. Jeff Harvey made it a double over the Rouffignacs, this time Yvonne, with D18 and D5 for the match and 2 valuable points, they probably thought they were not going their way. Ray Hayes had the unenviable task of facing an in-form Smith who made it 8 for the visitors, scoring 2x100, 104,140 and the all important doubles D8 and D4. Junction Jackals recovered from last week´s home defeat, to take out unbeaten Que Pasa Eagles. In fact you wouldn’t have bet on 1-5 at half time, but that was the score. Andy Gildea once again starred for the Jackals in the first half hitting 100 and two doubles, D4 and a 52 out (S12,D20). Michael Jones assisted with two of his own D12 and D15, Jim Scott taking out the fifth double on D8. Den Hall and Joe Cuyt contributing to the Eagles single point. The hosts pulled their socks up in the singles taking the first two through Jim Storey (2-0) and Stuart Clark taking out Jim Scott by the same score, the Jackal managing 2x100 plus a host of 80 pluses, but it was Clark´s 3x100 plus D1 and D8 to take the leg and (3-5). Gildea saw off the challenge of Cuyt for at least a draw on D20 and D16 plus a ton. Captain Hall expected to take the first leg, in his encounter with Mick Jones, scoring 121 and 134 to leave a double. Jones required 101 and somehow missed the dart board with his first however, the second found T17 and the third a bulls eye. Wow! Hall levelled on D2 after recovering
KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY.... Sid Cross stars for the Porters while Linda is League Hon Secretary from Jones exploits in the first, but Jones took the third leg on D2 for both points. Kevin Wood made it four for the hosts on D20 and D8 to include 101 and 100 setting up Clark to make it 5 for the Eagles in a tight match with Steph Simpson who took the middle leg on a 69 out (S19,S18,D16). Clark´s winning legs on D20 and D10 included 2x100 and a 121. Breakaways had a convincing home victory to the Kestrels and remain unbeaten. Crunch time will be the next league match on November 13th when they visit the Tavern, also unbeaten with the same points. Brett Badlove, Que Pasa´s licensee, showed the Kestrels how to do it with a 140 and D20 in the triples, helped by some good scoring from Terry Kirby and Alan Preston. Unfortunately it was to no avail as the Bears took the other two triples. The pairs went the same way, 2-1 to Breakaways, Mike Smith 100 and Ivan Jones 101 doing the damage. Badlove once again finishing this time on D8, the Kirbys Terry and Gilly doing their best to level with a number of high scoring trebles. At 4-2 down at half time the Kestrels were still in the game, but a tasty 90 out from Mike Snow (T18,D18), a couple of 80 pluses from Mel Dawson plus D2 gave the Bears the draw and at least a point. Smith was next on and promptly secured the win with 81,100,95 the double for two points and a share of the top of the table spoils. Smith was also voted man of the match securing 3 of his side´s 10 winning doubles. Mike Douglas D16 and Ivan Jones D20 made it 9 for the home side leaving Sarah Simpson to finish off the evening in style and a 60 sweep of the singles, using two darts for a 90 out (T18,D18). This week November 6th is K.O. Cup week, the league resumes the following week on the 13th. Paul Durrant, League Chairman

TESTING TIMES FOR SPAIN AT QUESADA BC
On Friday the Swallows were away at Vistabella in a hotly contested game. In the end Vistabella took the win 8-6. The Swifts at home to La Marina had a tough game and only managed to win on two rinks. Monday saw SABA Pearls away to San Miguel Pulsars where we won the match 9-5. The Diamonds were at home to La Siesta and had an excellent result 14-0. The Winter League had another excellent result this week at home to Vistabella winning 10-2. Our Berleen team also had an impressive win. The weekend saw Quesada playing hosts to the Spanish National Team. Many of our Quesada players were on duty for the Squad so it was pleasing to report that we were still able to field a squad that gave them a strong contest. The morning session went mainly in favour of Spain, with the exception of the mens' pairs, George Carnell and Jason Prokopowycz who fought a great contest to win against Nick Cole and Pete Bonsor. The afternoon saw a dramatic turn round for Quesada with our three ladies teams all winning, and the mens' rink also had a good win. Spain won the contest overall 16-10. Thank you Spain for a lovely day! Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties
LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB REPORT by Bobbie Sims. Sponsored by Ticket to travel and CBS Bowls. LA MARINA ASTRONAUTS. A win by 10 points to 4 against La Siesta Pioneers, looks like everyone fought hard with some extremely close scores, but our highest winning rink this time was led by Maggie Sadler, Carol Smith and skipped by Martin Butler 28-6. The overall shots were 108-84. LA MARINA PATHFINDERS. WOW… this one was tight, the overall shots were 101 to La Marina and 99 to Monte Mar, giving us a win by 8 points to 6. there were several high scoring rinks but the biggest difference came from Mo Taylor, Peter Bailey and skip Dave Taylor with a score of 26-10. LA MARINA EXPLORERS. Unfortunately the wheels came off for us, we were up against a very talented squad from San Luis so the best we could do was 2 points to 10, everyone hopes for a better result next time, very well done to Ron Maiden, Barry Sadler and skip Bill Sims who played a tight game against a good team coming out winners 21-11. DIV “B” - LA MARINA DOLPHINS. Well done to you all, against La Siesta Golds, our first 14 points to 0 of this season, and a fantastic 134 shots to 76, I wish I could mention all the teams by name, but not
enough room, yet again another whopping 34-4 go to Martin Butler, Cliff Rawlinson and skip Brian Duff. DIV “B” - LA MARINA SEAGULLS. Our game against Mazarron Miners this afternoon ended up as a close game the points were as follows, La Marina 6 to Mazarron 8, shots were tight, 84-99. the best winning rink was Mo Barker, Jean Perchard and skip Terry Perchard winning 21-9 DIV “A” - LA MARINA SHARKS. OK… we almost kept up with the Dolphins, an amazing 12 points to 2 and an almost equal shot diff of 134-79. We were against La Siesta Blues away, two of the teams reached the “30s” Margaret Mclaughlin, Peter Parsons and Barry Latham had 32-12 but I guess the top spot goes to Andy Bartlett, Martin Webb and Alan Castle with 30-6. Glad we had the “Parsons” with us, sorry they missed their cruise! On the social side, a big thank you must go to Bill Jones and his merry band for organizing yet another great monthly quiz night at the club, 21 teams enjoyed friendship, (well only if they won!) a great meal, and being together in competition, well done Bill x As usual, any enquiries regarding the club, please contact Steve Hindle 966184360.

The Cedars were away to E.I.Outlaws and the C Div team had a win 4 rinks to 1 with 1 drawn. The rink that went down was due to a 'technical KO' in that 'young Eric was quite poorly at the half way point but soldiered on to 14 ends to complete the game, a sterling effort for a young 90 year old!! Bottom line Cedars 85 shots to Outlaws 86 despite Eric's rink score being reduced to zero. Greenlands 9 points to Outlaws 5. SATURDAY ROLL-UP. Unusually it was a poor turnout, consequently only 3 prizes were awarded and would you believe it no wooden spoon!!. Alex won by 21-18 but it was a pity we had to have a loser. What a week, keep going it's getting better & better. Robin Adams (the scribe).

The Broncos started our bowling week with a home match against Monte Mar Matadors, although The Matadors took 4 rinks to our 2, Broncos played very well particularly as they had several new and inexperience bowlers, who all played well and showed good spirit and great promise. It was a grand occasion with good fun enjoyed by both sides. John Cleal, Mick Ager and John Skipper 21-20. Marion Haynes, David Haynes and Carolyn Harris 16-21. Gill Bartlett, David Hunter and Graham Hicks 10-23. Bob Easthope, Graham Day and Shirley Edwards 22-17. Rob Clark, Geoff Wright and John Newell 18-20. Friday found The Mustangs playing host to The Crusaders from La Manga, who found it a little difficult to adjust to the speed of the mat. But there was some splendid bowling from both teams and the play was closer than the score sheet might imply and good fun was had by all. Jane Hamill, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 33-10. Sheila Cooper, Geoff Wright and Carolyn Harris 37-13. Barbara Jones, Gary Newson and Geoff Jones 30-9. June Whitworth, Keith Cunningham and Stew Hamill 14-13. CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY This week we travelled to the wonderful Seve designed course at Alicante to play our regular stableford competition. The course was in great condition with the caveat that the greens were bumpy and showing some bare patches causing some putts to wander off line. Thus the scoring was a little below our usual standard with 1 notable exception. The results for the day were as follows: Nearest the pin on hole 3 was Roy Welburn Nearest the pin on hole 12 was Martin Cunningham Nearest the par 4 2nd in 2 and the par 5 10th in 3 was Rob Cowley Longest Drive on hole 16 was Robert Wardrop. Winner with an impressive 38 points was Rob Cowley Runner up with 33 points was Roy Welburn. Next week we are at the other Seve designed course at Peraleja to conclude our eclectic series. Dont forget the 14th at Vistabella for our Poppy Appeal day and please bring a raffle prize.
FRIENDLY BAR GOLF SOCIETY After our successful charity competition last month where we raised 1,050 euros for the Cardiomyopathy Association and a young man called George Coope who suffers from a heart condition it was back to a normal day's golfing played at La Torre . The day started out well with lovely golfing weather and good company. There were only 22 members and guests which proved to be a nice number. A few members were away in the UK on holiday which did affect how many turned up on the day. The course in some areas was in a poor state of repair but this was down to the large amount of rain that they had during this month. The greens were in good order but there was plenty of ground under repair and mud where there should have been sand . Speaking of sand, on the first 9 holes I have never seen or tried to play out of so many bunkers and on the back nine it was just like the Lake District and yes I found a few water hazards . The staff at La Torre are working very hard to repair and maintain the course and thanks for a good day out. 1st on the day was Gary Scullion (35) who played well even with a painful back .2nd with 32 was Paul Townsend and 3rd Mick McGiven (30). L/D was Gossage and our best guest was Steve with 30 points. After a few beers in the club house it was back to home base where there was more beer and a buffet which went down well. Thanks once again to those who arrange everything, and a massive thank you to Jim, who is passing on the duty of handicap and selection manager. Keep your eyes on the board for our next day out which I think is the last Saturday of November playing a Texas scramble format. Mike K

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN By Paul Durrant Even with a “Sat Nav” four members were unable to find Font Del Llop in 2 hours from Villamartin, for the Hub´s remaining Summer League fixture of 2014. Fortunately captain Simon Williams stepped in to re-arrange the pre-drawn four balls, safely in the hands of totally lost passenger and organiser Paul Durrant. Fortunately the course´s Caddy Master was very understanding, apparently its not uncommon for latecomers, liaising with Williams in getting the first two four balls away. The tricky Monforte Del Cid layout can be a real destroyer of rounds, particularly when the wind is up, it was however a reasonable breeze only, resulting in an average members score of 26 stableford points. The event was almost secDave Lathaby, 1st, and Paul ondary to the Society´s Durrant, 3rd.) Grand Prix competition,
where five players were in contention for a podium spot or even first place. The results of the Grand Prix will be announced at this week´s presentation dinner on Wednesday 5th November at Fairways restaurant. Six birdies were bagged on the day, the Par 4, 477 yard, 10th falling to John Eyre and Nick Spicer, who also happened to birdie the first, 370 yard, Par 4 as well. Unfortunately he couldn’t keep it up, but a 30 point total was a respectable return. The captain achieved one on the 225 yard, Par 3, third, which also happened to be a two shot hole for him, the outcome 5 points. How the rules allow 2 shots on a Par 3 is beyond me. Visitors John Hutchinson and Rob Govier also figured, the former gaining a 4 pointer on the Par 5, 534 yard last, Govier on the 290 yard, Par 4, seventh which also happened to be a N.T.P. (in 2) subsequently beaten by Eyre, who two putted from 4 feet. Dave Lethaby enjoyed a steady 33 pointer, going out on 16 and back in 17, just edging out Colin Wilson with an identical score, but relegated to second spot on countback. A Hub Winter League will commence soon, interested parties should register in good time at the Hub (Villamartin). Results - N.T.P. Hole 7 (in 2) John Eyre, Hole 12 Charlie Little, Hole 17 Rob Wheeler. PJ´s Rentacar Best Guest: 1st John Hutchinson 31 pts, 2nd Nick Spicer 30 pts. Grand Prix: 1st Dave Lethaby 33 pts, 2nd Colin Wilson 33 pts, 3rd Paul Durrant 32 pts
ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY - ALENDA GOLF
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY
Monteforte del Cid was our destination and the well looked after course Alenda and what a month October has been, again blue skies and glorious sunshine perfect for golf, the sun does shine on the righteous. This was obviously the reason for some good scores, along with the good condition Alenda is in, but the new nets near the 2nd Tee leaves a large question as it partly blocks the view of the fairway.. But who would have thought that the sprightly figure of Rocket Ron would run away scoring 41 points in the silver category. Me thinks a cut is on something like 2.0+ sword of Damocles but he did get a cuddle from two ladies (good incentive when you get a cut) Others worth a mention is Les “photo” Yates again in the frame along with the other Davies (Mike) coming first again but was piped on count back by Liam Foley, and if my memory serves me right, Liam and Geoff Wild did well last time out at Alenda. RESULTS - GOLD CATEGORY 1st Liam Foley 38 pts C/B, 2nd Mike Davies 38 pts, 3rd Les Yates 31 pts SILVER CATEGORY - 1st Ron “Rocket” Nicholson 41 pts, 2nd Geoff Wild 37 pts, 3rd Barney Hickey 33 pts NEAREST PINS. By Mike Chapman We started the week with a Change Partners competition where each player partners one of the other 3 team members over 6 holes with the best score counting towards the teams total number of points. The team with the highest score of 83 pts were Nick Campbell, Phil Herrington, John Robertson and Roger Tunstall. In second place was the team of John and Carole Wheeler, Benedicte Kruse and Mike Chapman with 78 pts. The winners can thank the leniency of the President not to disqualify them even though they had submitted an incorrect scorecard. On Wednesday we played for the Club's Memorial Trophy which is dedicated to past members who are sadly no longer with us. The competition takes the form of a 2 ball better ball however we must wait to learn which pairing came out on top as it was decided to declare the result at our awards ceremony to be held on 20 Nov 2014. The only result that was made known on the day was the 2's Club and this week there was only one winner with the popular Dave Pulling being the only player to score a 2 picking up the total prize fund. Friday saw the semi final of our ongoing 2 ball better ball Match Play Knockout competition. Phil Herrington and Carole Wheeler made their way into the final with victory over Tom Hardie and Rod Doel. There they will meet Bryan Neal and Brian Dent who secured their place with victory over Ron Phipps and Ron Percival. The final and third and fourth play off will take place next Friday. The remaining members played a 2 ball better ball competition and it was the husband and wife team of Ken and Liz Robertson who came out on top with a very good score of 44 pts. In second place was the pairing of Lindsay Forbes and Maria Oldenziel with 41 pts.
Today we played for out last major Trophy of 2014, the Nominated Pairs. This competition is sponsored by Mick Budd who presented the prizes and commemorative medals and also this year we remembered our war heroes by making a collection for the Royal British Legion, so poppies were on show everywhere. The Total of €61.88 was raised on the day. Mick Reeves, fondly known as Mick the Grip attended to evening function and thanked everyone for their support. On to the golf of the day, the Nominated Pairs is so called because members can choose their own partners for a better ball competition. Not everyone chose a partner, preferring to leave it to fate, or should I say, to the Captain to give them a partner. The game was well supported with a perfect complement of 40 players who set out in a beautiful aqueous light and as is the way at El Plantio those on the first tee had to try and forget the gaze of the rest of the players watching in the background, whilst trying to escape the treacherous out of bounds to the right. There was still plenty of dew on the course so the direction of the ball could be seen easily by the amount of water being thrown up by the path of the ball, but of course we are in Spain so the course quickly dried out and normal conditions prevailed. El Plantio has plenty of palm trees lining the fairways and for some these proved to be magnetic, as balls have a habit of being drawn to them and staying lodged there. The winners who rose above these trials and tribulations were: 1st Ray Brown and Tony Ellis with 46pts, 2nd Eddy Downing and Harry Wilcock 44 pts, 3rd Bob Berry and Mick Budd with 42 pts

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY AT EL PLANTIO
Nearest the pins: Susan Smith hole 7, Dave Keating hole 9, Dave Norton closest in three hole 12 and Eddy Downing closest in 2 on hole 16. The 2s pot was a double rollover so the only two players to get a two received €50 each, the lucky people were Tony Ellis and Sue Smith. The free game draw was won by Eddy Scott. Members and partners met in the evening at the Lo Crispin Tavern for the presentation, after which we all enjoyed a meal and lively entertainment from Cherry B. Thanks for everyone who supported the day and also for those who made donations to the British Legion. Xmas will be here soon and all information is in the Christmas Newsletter. Concentration and Target aiming’ There are basic human qualities needed to deal with winning and one is the ability to concentrate, particularly when the pressure is on and it is important that you understand how to concentrate because at these times you generally play too quickly and get it wrong or extend your time over the ball and duff it in the confusion. The ability to control concentration is a requirement for being a champion and it has been said that champions are separated from others by the way they ’think’. Concentration and your target aiming ritual are very closely connected because following a target aiming routine gives the mind something to do at a time when nerves could impede your normal routine. At this time you need to think about something but at the same time make your thought routine short because without pressure, you can mentally follow all of your swing movements but when the pressure is on it is almost impossible to do this and so a few thoughts only should be used at these times. You must practise the method, which pressure dictates because it is no good practising a method, which can only survive on the practise ground. Once you have decided on the line and length of your shot, you should select a target point (a point at the back of the hole when putting or a tree, etc in the distance) because it is ’impossible’ to line up to an area. From the back of the ball, in line with the target, you should find a mark a few inches in front of the ball and take your address position by squaring up to this mark and then look at the ball. The next thing is to breathe out and start the swing, remembering one thought on the back swing and one on the downswing. Not until the whole routine has been completed should you leave your ‘personal bubble’ and – with the smile of satisfaction from ’getting it right’. Remember the target aiming routine: Composure – Relaxation – (time as needed) Mental Rehearsal – (time always the same) Concentration Steps and Swing – (time always the same) We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. TWO POINTS LOST FOR TORRY CD TORREVIEJA ..........1 SC REQUENA................1 Four consecutive victories have not only lifted CD Torrevieja into joint 2nd position in the Tercera Division but they have earned the club a new found respect, as well as sending out a message that, under new manager Galiana, the time is right for this sleeping giant of a club to move on to the next level in its footballing development. However there would be no complacency ahead of the visit of SC Requena, who, despite their precarious position in the league, have achieved 11 pts, 3 wins and 2 draws, from their last 15. Just 4 weeks ago, with only 2pts from their opening 6 fixtures, they were firmly rooted to the bottom of the table with, seemingly, no likelihood of escape. How the fortunes of both clubs have changed. So CD Torrevieja knew that there would be no prospect for them to relax otherwise a defeat would be costly and quickly overturn the progress they have worked so hard to achieve. Unfortunately Requena had other ideas as they pressed Torrevieja from the very start and on just their 2nd attack, in a crowded Torry area, the youngster Pablo was first with an outstretched foot to a loose ball to put his side into an early lead. But such is the determination of the home side that
they immediately threw everything they had at the visitors who, for the remainder of the half, were limited to occasional breaks. The striker who was creating the chances was Steve and he went close with dangerous headers in the 10th and 12th minutes. Further opportunities were squandered by the Cameroon striker before he eventually leveled the scoreline at 1-1 in the 31st minute, when he stroked the ball home following good build up play, which saw him with space in the box. Torry continued to dominate throughout the 2nd period but were unable to add to their score, and again it was Steve who was guilty of ‘firing most of the blanks.’ Indeed he probably should have had a hat trick but further misses in the 52nd and 62nd minutes added to the strikers frustrating evening. Oscar was called into action in the 74th minute when he made an important save which could have seen Torry go behind in a game that they really should have won in a canter. Final score CD Torrevieja 1-1 SC Requena. Next weekend, Torry travel to CF Cullera Please check the Torry website for details.
BULL FLANAGAN GOLF SOCIETY AT ALICANTE For their meeting 28 members headed to Alicante. The event would support the Royal British Legion with Mick 'the grip' Reeves at the Bull Fanagan on our return to encourage support and as part of this he had part sponsored all par 3s. An excellent days golf with excellent weather for the event also and this was reflected in the scores with 50% of the players managing to reach the 30 point mark. Winner with 37 points was Phil Harris and hot on his tail was Bill Peters with 36 points who was also closely followed by Pat Whelan on 35 points and who just pipped Steve Edwards on count back. Winners of the par 3s part of the competition were hole 3 John West, hole 6 Michael Collins, hole12 Phil Harris, hole 15 Keith Smith, hole 17 Steve Edwards, but no player managed to beat hole 8. Winner of the 28ers draw was Trevor Taylor and Brian Smith won the football card.
After an excellent days golf players returned to the Bull Flanagan where Mick 'the Grip' Reeves gave an address in support of the RBL. The collection resulted in over 90 euros being raised by the Society and the Bull Flanagan Pub. Next meeting will be at Alenda on 21st November and we expect a full day again so register early.
CARP-R-US NEWS October 30th, the Club fished the Pantana de Beniarres just past Alcoy in the north of Alicante Province. This water has restricted access to many of the zones and with the water level down to 14.07%, this makes fishing even more difficult. The match was held in two halves, with a stop half way through to weigh in, because of the low oxygen levels in the water. It is not fair on the fish to have them in a keep net for too long under these circumstances. The result was a win for Roy Buttress with a weight of 13.42kg, second was Pete Kerr with 12.36kg, third Steve Collins with 10.94kg and in fourth place Ann Fowles with 10.74kg. Mostly feeder to pellet/corn, but Pete Kerr was on the pole. Next week, November 6th, is a return to the Eden Canal, part of the River Segura in Guardamar. Pegs at 8.00, fishing 9.00 till 2.00. The next Quiz night is on Tuesday November 11th, commencing at 7.30 pm. Teams of 6 or less are welcome to come and take part. Cost of entry is 1€ per person. The next Sunday meeting is on 16th November, with the Committee meeting at 10.30 and the General Meeting at 11.00. As previously requested please bring cups back by this date. The Clubs home is the bar El Alto La Dolores which can be found just off the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar, near the Repsol garage. PERFECT OCTOBER AS RAFA NETS AGAIN CD ACERO .............0 CD TORREVIEJA ....1 By Steve Hibberd Four wins out of 4 (all in Oct, and also without conceding a goal), gave Torry manager Galiana and his squad the just reward they deserve, for all the hard work put in so far this season. This latest victory at Acero's El Fornas Stadium, last Wednesday evening, pushed them to joint 2nd in div 3, but it wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination. A fine individual effort by top scorer Rafa Gomez on 18 mins, was one of the few chances created by the visitors, who were on the back foot for the majority of the match. Acero dominated the remainder of the 1st half, then continued where they left off after the break. Apart from Torry sub Cesar rattling the crossbar with a thunderous drive, twas the home side who should have scored. Deep into stoppage time, they thought they had, but a linesman's offside flag cut short celebrations. Bookings for Eddy, Jorge, Borja, Steve, Carrasco and Vicente, soured an otherwise wonderful night for the Salinas men.
