With an estimated 2000 poppy boxes distributed across the 19 Branches, and in excess of 300 unsung heroes establishing themselves in airports, shopping malls, supermarkets, golf courses, bars, clubs, restaurants and the more obvious street corners, the District Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator Robin Hargrave was hoping that ‘his troops’ could beat the magnificent sum of €171,376.88 raised in the District in 2013. On the Orihuela Costa, where, last year the Branch raised almost €25,000, 15% of the Spain District North total, the enormous job of organising the local count swung effortlessly into motion at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras last Sunday morning. The Poppy Collection boxes, gathered in during the previous few days, were distributed amongst the thirty volunteers, and with the help of a recently purchased ‘coin counting machine’ the task got underway. ‘The machine made it much easier this year’ said Chairman and local Poppy Coordinator Keith Carter. ‘This is the first time that we have used it and we no longer had the arduous task of counting all that coinage. We were all delighted to be saved the trouble.’ ‘But it was still an enormous task which has once again shown just how generous the Costa Blanca public can be for such a worthwhile cause and whilst I wouldn’t wish to pick out any specific contribution I would certainly like to mention ‘Mick the Grip’ Reeves and the local golfing fraternity which, including €6483.11 brought in just last week, has now donated 9077.74 euro to the appeal.‘ The room hushed as the end of the count approached. Everyone was hoping that the amount would exceed that collected 12 months ago, however, waiting for Keith Carter to announce the total was even more nerve racking than anticipating the results of an X Factor elimination vote, but when it did come the volun-
LEADER
teers broke into spontaneous applause. The total was 16,679.15 which, added to that already collected by the branch during the course of the year, brings the running total to 30,850.85, an absolutely superb achievement. With still more to come in from a small number of local projects, the final figure will not be released for some weeks, but it can already be seen that the branch is having yet another bumper year. The Torrevieja Branch has also been working hard and they too will be hoping to exceed previous years totals when they consolidate their collections next Sunday morning at the Casa Ventura Restaurant in San Luis. Volunteer members are sought to help out with the count. Call the Secretary for details. Here in Spain the monies collected are consolidated by the District North offices, from where it is allocated to the support and welfare of veterans and their families living in Spain. This can include vital medical equipment, hearing aids, wheelchairs, glasses, mobility scooters, food or anything else required for their support. All applications for help are income and savings related to ensure the neediest are dealt with first but the RBL will reply to any call for assistance within 3 days. Branches are also training more welfare case workers as we speak, with volunteers who generously give up their time to work with the many brave souls who gave and continue to give so much for us.

LA ZENIA ROUNDABOUT CHANGES FINALLY APPROVED No actual estimate on when the work will be completed can be given until the finances have been resolved.
he Ministry of Streets in Alicante has this week granted permission for Orihuela town hall to carry out their proposed redesign of access and egress at the La Zenia roundabout on the N-332. The work cannot begin immediately however, as the municipal council are still waiting to see if the provincial government will give the money for the project, as part of a subsidy presented by the former mayor of Orihuela, and serving member of the provincial government, M贸nica Lorente. If the Alicante government withdraw their offer, the municipal council will still find the money to pay for the work, although that will result in further delays. The two smaller roads from the roundabout will form part of a new one-way system, with vehicles only able to exit the roundabout onto the small road that runs alongside the taxi rank, in from of the Fresco restaurant. The road behind the Consum supermarket car park will be converted into a twoway street, allowing access into the supermarket and nearby businesses from the new mini roundabout which has been undergoing testing through the sum-
T
mer. On the other side, the road alongside the building which houses Alejandro麓s Restaurant will become one-way only allowing vehicles access onto the roundabout, with residents and visitors to the adjacent blocks and garages having to drive around the block via the same new mini roundabout on the road towards Villamartin. No actual estimate on when the work will be completed can be given until the finances have been sorted, but the permission from the road ministry is likely to be valid for up to a year. Meanwhile, access work around the Orihuela Costa town hall is nearing completion, with the rear, emergency exit now accessible to wheelchairs and those with mobility issues for the first time. The pavement ramps have also been lowered and the new pathways of zebra crossing on both side of the N-332 mapped out ready for painting. The work still outstanding is the removal of a corner of the car park donated by Mercadona to ease pedestrian flow, and the installation of new bike parking frames.

ORIHUELA ASSOCIATIONS COUNCIL INVITATION
The councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, is about to embark on an initiative to make contact with all previously registered associations in the coastal zone, to ascertain if they are still active, and then see how the town hall can collaborate with these important links within the community and business. Having compiled a list of those associations officially registered in 2012, it is likely that many no longer exist, but those which are active are welcome to make contact with the town hall to see what progress can be made. The invitation is open to officially and legally registered associations, but the town hall can also provide information to those groups who are not registered as to how to go about becoming recognised, with the possibility of prepared statutes and recognised models already being available. The Orihuela Costa has recently seen a new federa-
tion of associations created, with their official presentation moving away from the coast to the city, which aims to bring groups together to raise awareness of issues with the authorities. Martina also hit back at criticism that nobody from the government attended the recent presentation, saying “it is true that none of us attended the meeting, but I was on holiday and as we are in a minority with the mayor also off sick, those councillors who are left to run the government were extremely busy”, whilst welcoming the creation of the federation, saying that “I hope they will continue to be a none political body, as any pressure from associations that can get behind many of the much needed projects that are outstanding on the Orihuela Costa is important”. Associations wishing to contact the town hall can email residentes@oiihvela.es, or make an appointment to visit, so as to ensure you can be attended to.

RAISING DO MESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS
On Friday, the town hall of the Orihuela Costa replicated an event that had taken place in the city, by unveiling a banner in support of the victims of domestic violence. Focussing on “Zero Tolerance” towards gender violence, the aim of the event was to raise awareness of the plight of the many people who suffer at the hands of an abusive partner, some of whom lose their lives, and others who suffer in silence. As a mark of respect, a minutes silence was held at 11:00, in the presence of members of the government team, including the councillor for the coast,
Martina Scheurer, and the councillor for social welfare, Emilio Zaplana. Zaplana explained that the initiative came about after the murder of an Orihuela resident in the summer, at the hands of her partner. Zaplana also explained how several activities are being held in the run up to the Day Against Gender Violence, which is the 25th of November. Meanwhile, Maricarmen Cabrera, president of the Clara Campoamor association, said that “the government must take the fight against gender violence, but citizens must contribute their grain of sand”.
BEACH CHECK FOR ORIHUELA COSTA A representative of the provincial coastal department has been visiting the Orihuela Costa this week, looking at various aspects of the coastline that have been raised as concerns by the municipal council. One area where the focus was given is the lower access to the beach at Aguamarina, where the truck which accesses the beach to remove seaweed has been known to cause damage to both the walls alongside the beach, on account of the restricted width, and the wooden walkways that lead to the life guard station and chiringuito beach bar. The walkways cannot be removed as they are a requirement of the Blue Flag accreditation, and so the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, is seeking permission to extend the concreted area and provide a more secure and wider access point for the vehicle, whilst still maintaining the necessary
mobility needs of pedestrians. The new coastal laws are also making the administration of the beaches easier in the future, whereas historically town and municipal councils would have to apply on an annual basis to permission to allow beach features such as sun beds, parasols and beach bars, the new legislation allows for the permission to be granted for a period of up to four years. On account of this easing of time consuming administrative procedures, Orihuela council are in the process of submitting their next application before the end of this year which will allow the permission for the longest period possible, thus saving the time and money needed to do this for the next four year period.

AY T O . C O U N T E R C L A I M S I N ORIHUELA CHIRINGUITO CASE
As the courts are in the process of examining documents and data to see if there is a case to answer regarding the award of the contract to run the beach bars in Orihuela, the municipal council have now filed their own case against both the previous government and members of the opposition CLr party. They say that their inactivity in the past has resulted in the municipality now being unable to claim back outstanding debts from the beach bar contractor which has been paid to the Provincial Coastal Department to allow for beach bars to be placed on the Orihuela Costa.
The acting mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata, claims that the council has not received 233,000 euro outstanding from the period of 2006 and 2007, which he says was never claimed by the government at the time, nor the subsequent councillors who held posts which should have identified the problem during this current administrative term. The mayor has put the blame firmly in the hands of previous Partido Popular councillor for contracts, David Costa, as well as the CLr members Juan Ignacio López-Bas and Pedro Mancebo who were the councillors for finance and the coast respectively before their expulsion from the government. Contrary to claims earlier this year that the current
The Council say that as a result of inactivity by the CLr Party they are unable to claim back debts from the beach bar contractors.
contractor owed over a million euro in debts, this case now dates back to when the original contract was awarded to Chiringuitos del Sol SL in 2006. According to Zapata, “allegations made by the contractor” state that there was an unwritten agreement that this fee was not to be paid, on account of their being less space available than was originally thought, and so an “oral agreement” was reached with the then council that they would pay the fee to compensate for the error in drafting the statement. Zapata then states that this could and should never be the case under the terms of any contract, unless it was rewritten and retendered, and so another contract should have been drafted. In explanation, David Costa, who has recently seen one case of corruption against him shelved, explained that the council paid the 2006 fee to the coastal department in the October of that year, and therefore the deadline for claiming the outstanding payment from the contractor would have expired in October, 2010. However, the 2007 fee was paid in January of 2008, and therefore the deadline to claim that fee was January 2012, when López-Bas and Mancebo “had the powers of finance and the coast”. For his part, whilst stating that he is not worried about the accusations, Mancebo has said that the complaint “falls under its own weight”, as it is still possible to recover the debt, and he is prepared to explain everything about the contract to the prosecutor. Mancebo also suggested that the actions of Zapata can be reckless, to the extent that the debt is not prescribed until after 4 years from the termination, which was November, 2012. Mancebo has also accused Zapata of doing a “disservice” to for-
mer councillors Asun Mayoral, who was part of the CLr group originally, and Bob Houliston, who entered government in a pact with CLR and Mancebo, as they were in charge of recruitment and the Orihuela Costa respectively. It was only prior to the award of the latest contract for the summer of this year that any attempts to recover the outstanding payment was made, when the municipal Mayor, Monseratte Guillén, along with the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, wrote to the contractor and requested the payment prior to the award of this contract, the subsequent result being the payment by Chiringuitos Del Sol of an outstanding amount of 552,000 euro for the 2008 to 2011 period, with the 2012 and 2013 payment request now having just been sent to the company as that is also now due. Meanwhile, the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, claims that Pedro Mancebo is also asking the prosecutor to examine the contracts for the award of both life guard and ambulance cover on the Orihuela Costa during the summer, on account of this contract being split into the two different elements of each service. Scheurer points out however that this was exactly the case when Mancebo offered and awarded the contract previously, and so any legal claim made against the government now with that as a factor would also implicate him for the same reason. Both the life guards and ambulance contracts were awarded to different companies, although Mancebo also claims that these companies share the same administrator, which is not allowed.

BENIDORM BOUND A Boselaphus Tragocamelus antelope has been treated for laceration injuries in Benidorm, after its leg became trapped in a log. The treatment occurred after the incident took place in the Terra Natura animal park this week, when the animal had to be shot with a tranquiliser dart to enable medics to treat the injury. The animal is expected to make a full recovery in little over a week.
HASHTAG POLICING Work began this week on an 8 kilometre stretch of the N-332 as it passes Torrevieja, restricting overtaking on the entire single lane route. As the scene of numerous collisions and more than its fair share of fatalities recently, the aim is to make the route safer by forcing vehicles to remain in their lane. However, despite applauding actions for a safer road, some residents are now concerned that as this is the only main road that links two of Torrevieja´s hospitals, including the public hospital of Torrevieja, the movement of emergency ambu-
lances might be impeded by the restriction, if vehicles fail to move out of the way. Similarly, as the road frequently sees agricultural and building plant on the link, the main flow of traffic for such a long stretch may well lead to further congestion and delays. Plans were finally announced earlier this year to widen the road to two lanes in each direction, although this will not happen for another 4 years in reality, as the first budget allocation for next year will most likely be used for expropriating land to enable the stretch to be widened.
TORREVIEJA DISABILITY CENTRE OPENING PROMISED The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has confirmed that the Centro de Discapacitados de Torrevieja is one of 22 purpose built centres for the disabled that Regional President Alberto Fabra believes will be put into operation during the next year. The announcement was made by Fabra during a region-wide meeting of municipal mayors from across the region, and was said to be part of the government´s commitment to improve care of those with disabilities, mental illness and the elderly in the municipalities. The building, which was completed in January 2012, had an investment of 4.6 million euro under the national funding initiative “Plan E”. It is built on a municipal plot and has a total floor area is 5,000 square meters. Non opening of this infra-
structure, which would cover a real need for attention to disability in Torrevieja, was blamed initially by Dolón on “bureaucratic reasons”. The Torrevieja centre is designed to accommodate 88 patients, and has day care facilities, although no budget had so far been set aside for the running and management of it.
In the year that marks the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 they were joined in remembering the fallen by the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, together with the Councillors for Foreigners, Culture and Security, Rosario Martinez, Luis Maria Pizana, and Eduardo Gil Rebollo as well as the Officer for Foreigners, Jean Paul Molero. Celebrating their 25th year the event was organized by members of the Torrevieja Branch of The Royal British Legion, chaired by Gill Burden. It also involved veterans of the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Marines. Following the service wreaths and poppy crosses were placed in the Garden of Remembrance in tribute to those who had fallen in the service of their country with the Snr Dolon laying the wreath on behalf of the city of Torrevieja. In a short speech the mayor thanked the British community for their invitation, which he always considered to be a great honour. He emphasized the solemnity of the act which he said was of enormous importance to the British community in Torrevieja.
Local police in the Valencia town of Rafal have reached out to the younger members of society by using their own hashtag on social network sites. Through their #PLRFL tag, they have already received questions relating to such subjects as bullying, violence and drugs, all of which have been answered. The police vehicles are also fitted with a barcode, enabling those with smartphone to contact them straight away in an initiative billed as the first of its kind whereas the police have reached out directly to members of their local communities in this way.

RESCUE MISSION The Spanish government looks set to accept hundreds of Turkish orphans, after a rescue association reports some 20,000 children in the country have been left without parents, after they were killed by Islamic State militants. The Rescue Christians group says, “The Spanish foreign affairs department will negotiate with the Turkish government for the safe passage of orphans to the country of Spain where our organization will take care of the Children with the longer term objective of providing new loving homes for the orphaned.”
HEAD CASE A woman in her 40´s was injured in her car in Elche on Monday, after a homemade explosive device detonated in the head restraint of her driving seat. The woman was hospitalised with head, neck and back injuries, but discharged a short time later after the severity of her injuries were not as bad as first thought. Several hypotheses are being considered by the police, including the woman being a victim of domestic violence.

The Murcia regional Minister of Works, Manuel Campos, has announced this week that a number of major airlines are already interested in flying from the new regional airport at Corvera. According to Campos, so far, Ryanair, Air Europa and Air Berlin have all expressed an interest in operating from the airport, which is set to replace San Javier as the flight feeder for the region of Murcia. Campos also stressed that the recent date of the 15th of December is still on target for the airport receiving the appropriate licenses to open as a flight hub,
Monday, 17th November, 2014
which would allow for the airport to be open to traffic from the 2nd of April, 2015. The final inspection of Corvera is due shortly, with the facilities being put under the microscope for a final time, despite favourable results in all safety and operational tests so far. Whilst talking about the confirmed closure of San Javier to passenger traffic, the minister also said that he hoped that it will still have a bright future, and that the Ministry of Defence will continue to grow and promote the military airfield and that it will become a “benchmark” for such operations in the future.
ALICANTEAIRPORT SERVES 9 MILLION
Alicante-Elche airport has served a total of 8,954,841 passengers so far this year, 4.7% more than the same period in 2013, after October brought 966,287 travellers through the facility. According to a report issued this week, domestic traffic increased by 23.9% compared with October 2013, with an additional 99,117 passengers, with the accumulated number of passengers from within Spain totalling 986,127 up until the end of October, 5.4% more than the same months in 2013. As for the international market, the UK was top of the list during October, with 423,541 passengers passing through, followed by those from Germany with 82,922, Norway with 62,675, Holland with 59,267, Belgium with 51 160 and Sweden with 38,817 travellers. In total, international traffic recorded a 1.9% increase over October last year,
with 866,287 passengers. There were a total of 6,731 flights handled by the airport in October, an increase of 3.5% on the same month of last year, whereas for the year to date, there have been 62,967 flight movements, an increase of 5.3% on 2013. As for domestic flights, there were a total of 1,157 during October, an increase of 41.8% compared to the same month last year. Perhaps not surprising but the largest number of International flights in October served the UK, with 2,613 operations, followed by Germany with 500, Norway with 378, 385 went to The Netherlands, 331 served Belgium, and Sweden was served by 235 operations.

The proposed strike by the road hauliers association which was due to begin on Monday has been called off after an agreement has been reached with the Ministry of Finance. The strike was due to a demand by the truckers that the ministry refund the so called “Health Cent” tax which had been put on fuel and deemed illegal by the European Union. The main road hauliers associations signed an agreement on Thursday with the treasury, with the treasury now doing a u-turn on their policy, now agreeing to pay the due amount in full. Apart from reducing traffic on the roads, the knock on effects of the strike would have meant stores and the hospitality industry would suffer, and thus their relevant associated bodies have issued a statement declaring their “satisfaction” that the strike has been called off.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
THE ATLANTIC TRAVELLING BUTTER DISH It all began with a newspaper article in the online edition of my favourite newspaper, when I came across a report about the evils of eating margarine. Yes, you have read this correctly, because I seem to have read endless articles about the evils of butter and the benefits of margarine over the years. The article pointed out that margarine was originally developed as a product to quickly fatten turkeys in the USA. When the turkeys became ill and died, the manufacturers were left with so much margarine in their stores that they scratched their corporate heads in despair, asking themselves what they should do with their newly created margarine mountain. The answer was of course perfectly obvious, to feed it to humans instead. I nearly dropped my piece of toast, which was liberally spread with expensive cholesterol reducing margarine and lovingly coated with Marmite. I read disturbing accounts about the margarine industry’s efforts not only to turn the butter loving public away from this ‘natural’ food into eating a plastic substitute that was not fit for turkeys, believing that it was good for them. We have all been assured in the past that if we eat margarine instead of butter we would be less likely to have a heart attack or stroke, and recent promotions even claim to
reduce cholesterol. What’s not to like? So, what has this to do with the butter dish and the Canary Islands, I hear you asking. Well, for many years I have been searching for a butter dish made by a manufacturer that ceased production many years ago, in order to complete a set of much loved tableware. In view of this article and many others, we decided to switch back to butter, in moderation, of course. Imagine my delight when I found a brand new butter dish from this manufacturer on an auction website. It was exactly what I wanted, and so I purchased it right away. I was assured that the item would be despatched immediately and that I would receive it within a week. I was a little sceptical of this promise, having had many problems with parcel deliveries to the island in the past, and dreaded what the customs and delivery people would add as a “tax and service charge”, but I remained optimistic. During the next six weeks, according to tracking, my butter dish crossed the Atlantic three times, and was finally returned to the suppliers in the UK as ‘undeliverable’. Despite checking addresses, quoting National Identity numbers and all the rest of the bureaucracy that accompanies life on the island, the lady who dealt with my problem on behalf of the suppliers was charming, but finally admitted that a delivery to the Canary Islands “Had her beat”, before adding, “Would you like a refund?” Clearly, the Canary Islands do not welcome butter dishes. Having been down this route many times before with other items, and having learned never to give up. I arranged for the butter dish to be sent to a friend in the UK. From there, I will either collect it during my next visit to the UK, or ask one of our friends to bring it with them when
they next visit the Canary Islands. I can then once again enjoy seeing butter in an attractive butter dish, instead of a plastic box. Yes, I guess we all have our little obsessions in life. Meanwhile, if you would like more information about the evils of margarine, I suggest a little first hand research on Google along the lines of “butter versus margarine”. Recent research studies may surprise and shock you. If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). SARAH’S BLOG ON BEDDING
We spend about one-third of our lives asleep therefore it makes sense to invest in bedding that's not only comfortable, but stands the test of time. With so many options out there — thread count, fabric make-up, patterns, solids — the decision process can be overwhelming... The thread count isn't an indication of quality anymore. Unless it's an amazing and very expensive fabric, a high thread count is just a numbers game: many companies cheat the numbers with double twist yarns in a cheaper fabric. The type of material you choose for your sheets has everything to do with personal preference. Think about it: it's what you're wearing eight hours a day! Cotton is the best quality (and most expensive) is 100% Egyptian, which has extra-long-staple fibers that produce sumptuous, yet extremely durable sheets. Poly-blend sheets are easy and resistant to wrinkles. The most popular weave is Percale. Percale, is light-
weight and tightly woven, which results in crisp, cool, bedding, while microfiber's super-tight, dense weave makes it wrinkleresistant, extra-soft, and resistant to water. It has a thread count of 200 or higher and is noticeably tighter than the standard type of weave used for bed-sheets. It has medium weight, is firm and smooth with no gloss, and warps and washes very well. It is made from both polyester, or various blends. Percale fabrics are made in both solid colors and printed patterns. The finish of the fabric is independent of its weave, so it can be either printed or unprinted. Standard bed sheets come in two main varieties: flat or fitted. A flat sheet is simply a rectangular sheet of cloth, while a fitted sheet has its four corners, and sometimes two or four sides, fitted with elastic, to be used only as a bottom sheet. The fitted sheet may also be secured using a drawstring instead of elastic. The purpose of a fitted bottom sheet is to keep it from slipping off the mattress while the bed is in use. A particular way of folding and tucking while making the bed, known as "hospital corners," is sometimes used when the bottom sheet is flat rather than fitted.
Usually a flat bed sheet is overlocked around the edges to form four seams. One of the seams is wider than the other three and helps with orienting the sheet correctly on the mattress. The wider seam goes at the head end of the mattress. Sometimes the sides of cheaper brands do not have seams, but are finished with the selvedge only. When placing a flat sheet on a bed, the manufacturer has designed the printed side to be softer, and thus it should be placed on the bed printed side "down". When folding back the covers, this also allows the printed side to show, for aesthetic purposes. When one makes a bed, the patterned or monogrammed side of the top sheet is placed facing down and then the top edge is folded towards the foot of the bed, exposing the design. Remember the quality and durability of bed sheets is often conveyed by the thread count. In general, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet!

SPEEDING FINE REVENU E DOWN
The amount of revenue collected through traffic fines has been reducing annually since 2011, according to the DGT traffic department in response to a question raised through parliament this week.
In 2011, the DGT collected 458 million euro in fines, which dropped to 406 million in 2012 and 389 million in 2013. In the first half of this year, the amount collected was 188.5 million euro, which would equate to 377 million should the same amount be collected by the end of the year. Drivers in AndalucĂa have contributed the most to the national coffers for their poor driving habits, handing over 83.7 million euro last year, 16 million less than their 98.9 million euro total in 2011, and slightly more than their first half of the year contribution of 40,395,250 euro. Drivers in the Valencia region handed over 50.2 million euro in 2011, reducing that amount to 38,700,000 in 2013, and 21.2 million in the first half of this year, therefore potentially increasing the amount to an annual figure of 22.4 million euro at year end. However, with three different unmarked radar cars spotted operating at the same time this week on the N-332 in the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa area alone, that closing figure may well surpass expectations, as drivers still ignore the speed limits on the road and run the risk of the men and women of green relieving them of their hard earned cash, which can not only be done at the time, but under the new laws that came into force in July, could also mean a bill landing on your door for your haste to get to your destination.

READY FOR A COLD DROP The chills were felt this week as temperatures dropped to levels not seen since last February. As autumn is well and truly taking us towards the winter months, Tuesday saw temperature peak at just 14.8 degrees in Alicante, the coldest since the 12th of February, whilst Benidorm saw 16.8 and Orihuela 15.4.
Rain also fell by the plenty with Sax being the worst hit in the local area, followed by Elche and then Alicante. In order to prepare for a cold winter, the Ministry of Development has launched a road campaign, for which they have invested 64.2 million euro. To ensure safe passage in the event of ice and snow, this year the Ministry has access to 1,330 snow plows and 236,300 tons of grit, mainly salt, distributed in 367 stores and 510 silos scattered around the country. To facilitate the operation, in case of restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles, there are 36 emergency parking locations already prepared around the road network.

WHAT CAN I BUY THEM FOR CHRISTMAS ?
emember Christmas past, when after a restless night of clock watching the children finally stirred and the whole family ran excitedly downstairs to see what Santa had brought ? There is no reason at all why as adults we cannot still enjoy some of that excitement with our wives, husbands, partners, grown up family, neighbours and friends. The problem is that unlike buying gifts for children, buying for adults can be somewhat daunting. Who do you know that wouldn't love a 3 day visit to Madrid 16-18th Jan only 119€, Granada 28-30th Jan only 99€, Valencia 21-23 Jan only 99€, or Benidorm Weekend break 105€ Jan-Mar or Weekday 99€ Jan-Mar? Another idea would be the Disney on Ice show (100th Anniversary show) which is coming to Valencia Sunday 1st March 49€ ticket and transport, or for those interested in the supernatural the internationally famous Psychics Derek Acorah and Colin Fry have a show in Benidorm 15th February 43€ ticket and transport. Or you can simply buy a travel voucher to any value of your choice and let the lucky recipient choose from the wide range of excursions featured on the Website www.coachtripsonline.com.

The Socialists say they are not interested in talking, they only want to see solutions.
MYSTERIOUS DEATH The Guardia Civil Guard is investigating the death of a man whose body was found last week on Acequión beach in Torrevieja. A spokesperson said there were no obvious indications of how he died and certainly no signs of violence. The deceased, who was fully dressed, was said to be a German citizen, 65 years of age.

Part of this month's cultural programme is an acoustic evening with Shani Ormiston and friends in the Intimate surroundings of the Palacio de Musica in Torrevieja. This small hall lends itself to this type of concert, where the extensive voice tones of this talented singer blends with the chords of guitar and piano, each supplementing the other. Shani says she loves these small venues where her music can inter-relate with the audience in a personal, relaxed atmosphere, combining her obvious love of singing good songs with excellent accompaniment from guitarist Raul Ramirez and pianist Eugenio Fernandez. It is a mixed programme of some well known pieces of music intermixed with her own compositions that have been highly a claimed in the music world. DIABETES KILLS 25,000 EACH YEAR IN SPAIN Diabetes kills around 25,000 people and costs the National Health Service 23 billion euro every year in Spain, according to the Spanish Federación de Diabéticos Españoles, who wanted to raise awareness of the disease in conjunction with World Diabetes Day. The costs not only relate to the physical costs of treatment, but also the indirect expense caused by such phenomena as absenteeism, early retirement and social spending, although the actual annual cost per patient for hospital treatment is 1,708 euro. In relation to the number of fatalities, the disease costs the lives of 25,000 people in Spain each year, and a staggering 43% of those who suffer from the condition remain undiagnosed, according to Andoni Lorenzo Garmendia, the president of the federation. Furthermore, the International Diabetes Federation warns that by 2035 there will be an increase of 55% of cases of diabetes worldwide. The increased incidence is “intimately” linked to changes in the lifestyle of the people in more recent years, especially the increase in obesity rates. According to the latest
data from a 2014 study of obesity worldwide, one in six people in Spain are obese, and 26% of boys and 24% of girls are overweight. According to the coordinator of Community Nutrition and Public Health for the Spanish Foundation of Dieticians, Manuel Montiño, diabetes is “a disease of civilization because it is related to the intake of foods high in sugar, fat and sodium, and with increased sedentary lifestyle among the population”, citing evidence from a meta-analysis of 22 trials that have shown an improvement in various parameters of metabolic syndrome leading to reduced risk of diabetes. Specifically, it has been reported that some of these studies have shown that reducing red meat consumption is associated with a lower risk of diabetes. In addition, a daily intake of one can of sugared soda increases the chances of developing the disease by 18%, and although there is no evidence that saturated and trans fats and nuts increase the direct risk, they do in terms of cardiovascular disease, one of the major complications of diabetes patients.

WEIGHING IT UP The University’s of Alicante and Miguel Hernández de Elche, have conducted a nutrition study involving 285 local children on detailed as 'The Influence of environmental variables on child overweight and obesity', the aim of which is to assess the incidence of these diseases in early childhood. The study also included random tests on physical activity and quality of sleep.
WE HAVE NO TOMATOES
Similarly, the dietician continues, research has revealed that the Mediterranean diet reduces the chance of developing diabetes by 23%, and there are benefits in consuming fibre, fruits and vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids when consumed as part of a healthy diet. “Therefore, this disease can be prevented with a healthy diet with regular physical exercise”, Montiño concludes. Specsavers in Torrevieja will be holding a free diabetes screening event in store on 28th November from 10am to 1:30pm, in association with the Asociación de Diabéticos de Torrevieja. This is open to all and totally free of charge. During the event, a qualified nurse will be conducting a simple finger prick test to detect the signs of diabetes and an appointment is not necessary. Results will be given immediately and if positive, patients will be referred for medical advice.
The availability of the tomato consumption in Cataluña has seen a significant reduction in recent years, but whereas the basic fruit has reduced in numbers, the variety has increased in equal amounts. As the most commonly consumed natural foodstuff, accounting for 20% of all fruit and vegetable consumed, it is also responsible for 20% of the production in the area, but production dropped 40% in seven years, according to the Department of Agriculture.
MILKY BAR Supermarket chain Mercadona has changed the packaging on its “Lactose Free” chocolate, after a consumer association highlighted that the product did in fact contain lactose. The new label will reflect the actual lactose content, although this has now also been reduced, and will to 0.05%. The change will start to be reflected in sore during December. The association is also urging better legislative regulation of lactose free products by the ministry of health.

unday saw the start of the latest outing to the jungle in I´m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, with the usual mixture of known and unknown “celebrities”, wannabes, once wases and the one that the glamour mags will look for in the shower. Newsreader Michael Buerk, TV presenter Melanie Sykes, Allo Allo actress Vicki Michelle and Corrie soap actor Crag Charles heading up the list of most well known, along with footballer Jimmy Bullard, model and singer Nadia Forde, music creator Tinchy Stryder, Superbike champ Carl Fogarty and Essex based staged reality “star” Gemma Collins being joined by reality show model Kendra Wilkinson. So, now we know who everybody is, we can go through the next few weeks enjoying the dramas that unfold before us. However, one TV presenter who has stood up against IACGMOOH this week is wildlife guru Chris Packham, who wrote an open letter to Ant and Dec asking them to end “abuse of animals”, in the so called Bush Tucker Trials. Not likely to make that much of a difference though. Back to the real-staged drama now and we can´t ignore the fact that as the door closed on another season at the big house of Downton Abbey, ITV announced that yet another series has been commissioned, with production beginning early next year on the sixth series of the globally successful and multi award-winning series which debuted on ITV in 2010. On the subject of big houses, although slightly smaller than Downton Abbey, fans of Channel 4´s Gogglebox will be delighted to know that the “posh

180´s: Peter Ayres (Porter House), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov (Meerkats), Mike Smith (Breakaways), Shaun Smith (Hyenas) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) After last week´s K.O. cup first round, its back to the formalities with both Divisions warming up nicely. Breakaways Bears gave the Tavern a bit of a tonking to take over top spot in Division 2, Mike Smith doing a lot of the damage for the Bears. Meanwhile the Meerkats keep their place at the summit of Division 1, but for how long? A miserable performance against the Que Pasa Eagles, albeit a win, doesn’t bode well for the current champions and cup holders as ironically their next match is against the rocking and rolling Hub Hyenas, who leap frog Busters into second spot, after two wins this week including a rescheduled match against Gogarty´s. That game produced 25 tons and ton pluses spread pretty evenly throughout a great team effort. Although 6 up at half time the game could easily have been 3 apiece, or with good fortune 2-4 to Gogarty´s. I am afraid its “scores for show, doubles for dough”. Excellent game shots from Nick Spicer 64, Lee Holtham 74, 64, Shaun Smith 61 and John Linton 76 were the highlights of a great match. Incidentally it was nice to see John Linton back for Gogarty´s, he had a great season last term, but has been inundated with work on his “Refurbished Bathroom” business. Currently installing 9, yes 9, bathrooms in an 11M euro, 12 bedroom villa in Marbella the poor chap has little time for darts, but still managed to turn in a decent performance for the Bulls (100,2x121,140). Gogarty´s played the following evening, entertaining Porter House and enjoying a good start winning two of the three triples available. Bliss Wright completed the first 701 on D12, Richard Pattison helping out with a 121. The lead was short lived, Sid Cross planting his second arrow in D15, captain Ray Sanderson contributing a ton. Ernie
Wilson made it 2-1 on D10 to give Steve Woods side an early lead. The game changed after the doubles, the Porters winning all three through Brian Nash 125 and D2, partner Peter Ayres 95 in the first. The second could have gone either way, Wright and Kevin Procktor facing the Sanderson duo of Ray and Sue, the latter eventually completing the 601 on D1. Cross and Ray Hayes both found 3 figure scores, Cross taking out D2 for 2-4 at the break. Sanderson chose Cross to lead off the singles against John Williams and a good selection it turned out as the youngster took out 48 in three and 74 hitting T14,D16 in two despite scores of 95 and 121 from Williams. Brian Nash ensured the draw and one point taking out Kevin Fitzpatrick 20 on D2 and D16 plus a ton. A further 2-0 came next via Ray Hayes D1 and D9 facing the dangerous Bliss Wright for the match and both points. Sanderson looked likely to repeat the preceding score lines in the next with 140 and a D16 out, plus a ton in the second leg. Kevin Procktor however had other ideas finding a nice 97 to leave D16 taken out next throw. An edgy decider followed, Procktor completing the 501 on D1. Former comedian Ayres played the fifth singles against Gogarty´s captain Steve Woods who is struggling to find his old form this term. Ayres 94, 135 and two doubles D4 and D5 saw off the challenge from Woods to make it 3-8. Pattison had the throw in the 12th leg against Sanderson Sue and started with 120, the latter´s response was 113, but it was the Gogarty´s man who found the double first on D5. A 135 in the next from Pattison plus the double completed the match against the plucky Porter. The Hyenas made it two wins this week taking on the might of Mark Filer and the Busters crew winning pretty convincingly. Irene Russell and Paul Dowington were the only winners in a one sided first half, the Hyenas buoyant in a Ministry of Sound atmosphere. The only thing missing was Pete Tong. Filer as expected won his singles but his team mates didn’t reproduce any form of consequence. Shaun Smith´s maximum plus 3x100, Joe Hawkins 3x100 and Joe Miller 5x100 were the main scorers for the Hyenas who really look up for this week´s top of the table clash versus the Meerkats. Talking of champions it was a relieved captain Derek Kingsbury who came out of the Que Pasa Eagles match with a win. Missing John Walker the Eagles were as poor as the Kats. There were however some highlights. Pat Abrams did a little showboating in the third triple requiring 95 managed to drop his first dart into D19. His next was more accurate finding S19 to leave D19 with one dart remaining. The third arrow nestled nicely next to his first for the leg. An earlier D8 from Abrams and a D4 from Danas Bobinas gave the Kats a 0-3 advantage. Kevin Wood pulled one back on D16, partner Jim Storey scoring a ton, playing Paul Durrant and Lee Maiden who amazingly found 6 treble 1s in the leg. Abrams 140 and D15 made it 1-4, leaving Stuart Clark 100 and Joe Cuyt 100 and D4 to reduce the deficit at the break. After an ample and tasty helping of cottage pie, the match resumed with 2x100,125 and a 64 out (S16,S16,D16) from Abrams needing 3 legs to overcome Wood who took the middle leg. Alex Nikolov made short work of Cuyt 101, with D2,D10 plus 100,135 and a 180. Captain Den Hall enjoyed a tasty 89 out (D19,S19,D16) and a D18 for a 2-0 victory over a dire Durrant performance, for the Eagles third leg. Alan Ostrowski excelled in his match against Jim Waddle scoring 100,105,125,D2 in the first and S10,D20 in the second for the match and two points. The Pole has only been playing a short while but is improving week on week. Captain Kingsbury made it 8 with D19,D16 plus a ton to leave Clark to complete the match and fourth leg for the Eagles winning two of three on D10 and D9 along with 3x100 playing an out of form Maiden who took the first leg on D10. Mike Smith earned himself the man of the match award for
Euronics League goes European L/R Joe Cuyt (Belgium), Danas Bobinas (Lithuania), Alan Ostrowki (Poland), Alex Nikolov (Bulgaria) Breakaways and well deserved it was. 3x100,1x180, several 80 pluses and 3 game shots to include a 66 out on the bull (S16,bull) was his tally. He is definitely lifting the Bears to new heights and a potential Division 2 championship. The visitors were off to a flyer winning all three triples through Smith D1, Paul Lear D16 and Sarah Simpson D19. The Mikes, Douglas and Snow, scoring very well in the second. The same pair continued in the doubles Douglas D8 making it 0-4. The third Mike (Smith) overcame Stu Mitchell´s 100 and 140 to nail D10 after a magnificent 180. John Dursley D4 pulled one back for the Tavern at the break, Del Lister D10 ensured the draw to leave Snow to take the honours for the match on D1 after 85,95 and 132. Smith piled on the agony for the Tavern scoring 81,83,100 and his bull out for 1-8. Douglas 81,85 and D2 narrowly beat Paul Birtwhistle´s fine performance. Two to play. A nice 121 from Ralph Weatherby didn’t deter Simpson´s excellent scoring finishing the 101 on D4. Justin Hepburn made it 2 for the hosts completing the match with a little more showboating requiring 5 the Tavener hit D1,S1,D1. Nice one! Junction Jaguars enjoyed their third victory of the season and jump into third spot. Pat Schofield´s consistent scoring and 3 doubles D7, D1 and D5 dove-tailed nicely with Tracey Simpson´s similar scoring and two doubles D6 and D7. The Jaguars were 2-4 up at the break, the singles shared at 3 apiece, via Rachael Broadhead and Marie Dunne for the Queens. Top scores of the evening were Lisa Ivill 120, Rachael Broadhead 106 and Schofield´s 127. Hilda Wilkinson was the Jaguars most consistent scorer. The Kestrels couldn’t quite repeat last week´s cup victory over Ale House, but still came away with shared points. The House took an early 2-1 lead after the trebles, increasing their lead further after the first pairs. The Lanes, John and son Harvey reduced the score line for the Kestrels, leaving Chris Miles to do the scoring, partner Gilly Kirby doing the finishing on D4 for “even stevens” at half time. Ale House regained their lead in the 7th leg, the Kestrels going ahead for the first time through Brett Badlove D10 and Lane (John) D7. The 10th leg produced a 5 all score line, followed by Harvey Lane giving the Kestrels a chance of both points winning the 11th. It wasn’t to be as the Ale House took the remaining double for a deserved draw and a point apiece. Young Harvey was nominated man of the match. Paul Durrant, League Chairman.

WORLD CHAMP HELPS TORRY BOWLERS KEEP PACE IN TOP DIVISION By Guillermo Euro Bowling Torrevieja, the Ozone-based tenpin club of Spanish and international residents, got off to a fairly good start in the first round of Spanish bowling’s three-stop National League 20142015, establishing a mid-table position just a few points from second place. Against their regional adversaries, Levante and Ilicitano, EBT managed a 5-5 draw with the valencianos and took a handy 82 win over the team from Elche. A couple of matches turned sour for EBT in the last frames – 3-7 against Capital and 2-8 against Diagonal – denied the squad those critical points, finally leaving them in fourth place.
Another key bowler for EBT was Finnish national Mika Määttä whose average 215.36 was good enough for third place overall, after Celta´s Paco Rodríguez at 222.71. Diagonal were the most consistent team, with all bowlers exceeding 200. Also bowling for EBT were Juanjo Carral, Marko Palomäki, Kjell Monsen, Ludo Staes, Jarmo Peltonen, and Markku Määttä. Meanwhile in Madrid, the EBT ladies, in the absence of two of their more consistent bowlers, were fighting an uphill battle and found themselves holding the wooden spoon with 18 points, albeit with a better average than the penultimate team, Flecha-1, whose final haul was 26 points. Last season’s runners-up Capital amassed an impressive 56 points and took the lead, followed by Levante (49) and Ilicitano (47). Top scorer was Levante’s Cristina Más with 195.57, followed by Elche’s Alejandra Sandoval averaging 193.31. Also Levante’s Guardamar resident Lesley Gamblen did well at 186.50, while Pirjo Koski was EBT’s top scorer with 173.79. The EBT team was completed by Mirja Hakonen, María Jesús Pérez,

PADDY'S POINT GOLF @ ALENDA 26 members and guests travelled to Alenda on what for a lot of players was their first visit to the course. The weather conditions were near perfect just a little damp first thing. The stylish club house offered spectacular views of the course for our prematch coffee. The damp and testing conditions did not deter certain members from shooting good scores but the highlight of the day came from Sean McCarthy. Sean had a hole in one on the 5th hole, the first in his golfing life. Congratulations Sean and thank you for the drinks! We returned to Paddy's Point for refreshments and the most delicious lasagne, thank you to Hazel and her staff. The prizegiving followed where the chairman and captain thanked all the players for a great day out and apologised for the small confusion when handing out prizes. NTP hole 3 - Wayne Stevenson, NTP hole 5 - Sean McCarthy (*hole in one), NTP hole 13 - Mick O'Shea, NTP hole 16 - Sean McCarthy. Sean also collected the total twos pot. POPPY APPEAL GOLF DAY AT HACIENDA DEL ALAMO Hacienda Del Alamo Golf Club held a golf competition on Thursday 6th November 2014 in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. It is the fourth year of this undertaking, and they managed to beat last year’s impressive sum raised. With the help of discounted green fee,
generous prize sponsorship from the Great Golf Company Balsicas and Costa Calida Golf Tours, and extraordinary generosity donations of prizes for the raffle, they raised €2,480 on the day, and €112.00 in the Poppy Appeal boxes, making a grand total of €2,592. The organiser, Steve Haskins, expressed his thanks to all the generous benefactors, but in particular to the participants who made it such a wonderful day. On the day there were several ex-servicemen and women taking part, but folks from Belgium, France, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Italy, Germany, Ireland and Spain helped make it a truly international event, and it stayed dry. Put the 12th November 2015 in your diary now. Photo: Winners with Organisers, Steve Haskins (Organiser) Steve Locke, Graham Kemp, Graham Peckett & Dave Hornsby
LA MARINA BALDRICKS @ ALICANTE GOLF 11TH NOVEMBER
Twenty members and guests arrived at Alicante Golf for our monthly Stableford competition. Today was our only non Wednesday of the year and we could not have picked a worse one; rain for virtually the whole round. Prior to the competition we were provided with a breakfast free of charge, much appreciated by all. Despite the inclement weather some decent scores were posted, with George Runciman, 31 points taking the monthly trophy on count-back from Geoff Tempest. Another score of 31 points was posted by Paul Simkins who won the guest’s prize. The longest drive was won by one of our younger and less experienced members, Cammeron Scammell, so well done to him. Today’s competition was on behalf of the Poppy Appeal and on completion of the golf we retired to our watering hole the Final Whistle for the presentations and an excellent buffet provided by Mel’s Kitchen and an equally excellent chilli courtesy of Laney. Mick (the grip) Reeves was there to present some prizes and except €100 on behalf of this great cause, this was raised on the day from a scratch card and raffle. Our thanks to Richard Davies at Bonalba Golf, for the kind donation of 2 green fees as a prize in the raffle. Further winners were: Nearest Pins: 3rd hole - Geoff Tempest, 6th hole - Geoff Marlow, 12th hole- George Scammell, Longest Drive: 9th hole - Cammeron Scammell, Our AGM will be held in the Final
Whistle at 1900 on 24th November, all members are asked to attend if possible. The next game on the 10th December will be a 2 ball ‘mini’ Texas Scramble for the M.A.B.S. Trophy. All monies raised on the day will go to this charity. Any enquires concerning the LAMBS Golf Society, contact Steve on 634352903 or e mail chappysj@hotmail.com. ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY, LA MARQUESA – 11th NOVEMBER
After a gap of close on 10 years we ventured just down the road to Quesada to play at La Marquesa Golf, not sure if it was tears of joy or horror, as after 5 holes it persisted down and like the martyrs we are we continued until common sense and drowned rats prevailed we call it a day after a few more holes. It was so bad that those who watched the weather forecast and donned waterproofs still got soaked to the skin. We really did try to play a combined pairs stableford. Such a shame as there was a number of us that had not played La Marquesa for such a long time, we were really looking forward to playing there. The competition was based on just 9 holes and the brave winners were: 1st: Arthur Williams & Ken Hopkins 62 points, 2nd: Malcolm Woods & Tom Richardson 51 points. NEAREST THE PINS: HOLE 5: Barney Hickey HOLE 15: Dave Gurrene. LONGEST DRIVE:
Pearse McMurray. It was an early bath or hot shower and back to Izzy’s Bar. But! Ivie Davies (who just loves their Caroline’s chips) must have had premonition, as when we got back to Izzy’s there was a power cut and guess what? NO CHIPS. It was Remembrance Day and through the good services of the Britiish Legion Poppy Appeal and Mick the Grip 60€ was raised and the picture here is of the dried out players. The next away day is at Alicante Golf on the 25th November the last but one gane of 2014, where has time gone? The first Tee time is 10:00 am, so be there by 09:15 to check in and get your coffee and toasty. For more information or if you wish to play with the arguably the friendliest Society contact Ron Nicholson on 678 849 142 or email sanmigron@gmail.com Photo: 2nd: Tom Richardson – Malcolm Woods, Poppy Day Appeal Group

AWAYDAY BLUES HAUNT TORRY UD BENIGAMIN................3 CD TORREVIEJA .............1 Following on from last weeks thrashing at Cullera, Torry once again failed to deliver on the road. Against lowly newly promoted Beniganim, hopes were high, but they fell flat on 5 mins, following Sanchez's conversion from a corner. Worse was to follow on 19 mins, as the hosts made it 2-0 through Rafeta. Torry's Rafa Gomez did well soon after, but his shot was kept out by the keepers outstretched legs. At this stage, Torry were playing well, examples of which were when Ruben shot just wide, then from Eddie's cross, which Burguillos just failed to get a connection on. Unfortunately, just before half time, Rafate notched up a brace, giving his side a 30 advantage. At the start of the 2nd half, Steve came on for Rafa Gomez, Adrian for Martin, and Ferran for Burguillos, in a bid to shake up the mix. The changes certainly seemed to do the trick, as confi-
dence grew in attacking options. Steve headed over, then having won a penalty, Adrian dusted himself off, dispatching the spot kick in style. Ferran struck a beauty from 20 yards, which just missed the target, but Torry couldn't get themselves on the scoresheet again. Both Adrian and Ferran shone, in a much improved 2nd half, but Torry must stop giving opponents a head start. Bookings for Rafa Gomez, Eddy, Jorge and Ferran, push them further to unwanted suspensions. Torry team: OSCAR, RUBEN, EDDY, MARTIN, ALEXIS, JORGE, BORJA, BURGUILLAS, CARRASCO, RAFA, BERNA Due to resurfacing at Vicente Garcia Stadium, Torry take on Paterna at Nelson Mendela Stadium, in their next fixture. Make a note of Sun 23 Nov, ko 5pm, for what promises to be an exciting div 3 encounter.
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman We started the week with a 6x6x6 with one score counting on the first 6 holes, two on the second 6 and three on the final 6 holes. The winners with an excellent score of 83 pts were John and Carole Wheeler, Benedicte Kruse and John Robertson who was the main contributor with 31 pts in 13 holes. On Wednesday we played for our Poppy Day Trophy where the main aim of the day is to raise funds for the Royal British Legion to further their good work with providing assistance to ex-servicemen who find themselves in need. The golfing action took the form of a Stableford competition with prizes also available for nearest the pin on the four par 3's. There was some excellent scoring with Jan Svendsen winning the trophy having scored an
‘European Tour 2nd stage qualifying – LAS COLINAS’ For those of you that may not be aware during the last week the European tour stage 2 qualifying event was held at the exclusive Las Colinas Golf & Country Club which is located here on the Costa Blanca. The next stage from this event is final qualifying where the successful few will gain a card onto the main tour to play against the worlds best golfers including and our Ryder Cup team members so the rewards are great. This year I have had the opportunity to play with Jack Burke and Luke Goddard both of whom were highly successful amateurs and who now ply their trade in the lower levels of professional golf on the Challenge & Ecco tours where they are lucky to break even at the end of the year, Now you should understand that these are hugely talented golfers who were +4 handicap amateurs and members of the English and Walker Cup teams and yet with the depth of talent in Europe they struggle to make a living. Most of us will know Las Colinas well but if you visited the course during the tournament you will have seen these ‘journeymen’ golfers taking the course to pieces over the 4 days with the winning score of Chris Paisley of 17 followed by Sam Walker on -14 and Jaime Elson on -12 and would you believe that a score of -6 failed to gain one of the 17 spots available for qualification. Let’s put that into perspective in that an average score of 69 shots over a four day Blitz N Splitz 8-0 999´s period FAILED to qualify and this Pinfall Wizards 6-2 Pin Pushers included former tour regulars as Sunrise Colegas 8-0 Cherry B´s Raymond Russell, Zane Scotland Alley Cats 2-6 GG’s Pinbusters and Scott Drummond. The full result was as follows: 1st Jan Svendsen 42 pts 2nd Phil Herrington 40 pts (c/b) 3rd Brian Townend 40 pts 4th Dave Pulling 38 pts Nearest the Pin: 6th Bryan Neal 10th Mick Brentnall 12th Jan Svendsen 14th Lindsay Forbes 2's Club: Ron Phipps, Brian Dent, Nick Campbell and Lindsay Forbes (x2) After the golf the Club held a raffle which raised the sum of 300 euros to be donated to the Royal British Legion. The photo shows RBL Rep Brian Dent receiving the money from our Club Captain and President. On Friday 8 of our members were away representing the Club in the Vega Baja League match. The result will be included in next weeks report. This left 6 teams to contest a 4 ball Texas scramble at Las Ramblas where one team finished some 4 shots clear with an excellent score of 58.3. The winning team was Nick Campbell, Barry Holtham, Brian Dent and Mike Chapman. The highlight of the round was when Bary Holtham holed out for an eagle at the par 4 second from some 130 metres.
