ORIHUELA COSTA SPRUCE UP CONTINUES
A lot of the work has been outstanding for many years, which is not a situation that the residents of Orihuela City would be expected to put up with.
Many of the smaller improvement works on the Orihuela Costa are about to be completed, as the temporary contracts given to some of the municipality´s unemployed workers are about to expire. Not only were the workers able to secure work for the period of the contract, they also underwent a training regime as part of the program, which taught them key skills that they will now be able to offer in their quest for permanent work. As well as general care, maintenance and cleaning work around the Orihuela Costa, the teams have been involved in 6 large improvement projects. Although some of those projects were continued long before the summer, such as the now very popular picnic area near to one of the most rundown areas of the coast, presentations are being held to showcase some of the latest tasks that the teams have completed. One such presentation is taking place near to Villamartin on Monday the 24th of November, with a second at La Zenia on the 4th of December. The teams have also been responsible for constructing the new information boards which have been popping up around the coastal zone, much needed and long requested by many residents. Part of their post summer activities have seen them convert the old wooden walkways from the beaches into fencing, thus avoiding any additional cost, whilst recycling the natural material that would otherwise have gone to waste. The Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, explained this week how the town hall is also in
the process of confirming a contract with a company to provide a large mechanical digger. Before the end of the year, it is hoped that the digger will attend numerous already identified black spots around the area, where large quantities of rubbish and waste has been dumped, and the digger will collect that rubbish whilst the teams have it removed and disposed of correctly. Once clear, many of the locations will have these new recycled fences put around the sites, in an attempt to reduce the amount of illegal tipping in the future. Meanwhile, the town hall has this week taken delivery of their new road marking machine, which will be permanently based on the Orihuela Costa, and be able to be called upon at a moment’s notice to carry out re-marking work. The first job the 11,000 euro machine is undertaking is the marking of the new zebra crossings that connect the improved walkways near the town hall, before working its way through the coastal area carrying out work which has been outstanding for many years.

CALLS TO RENAME TORRY SPOR TS CENTRE
COMING SOON Podemos manifesto is coming “as soon as possible,” says newly elected leader Pablo Iglesias, who was officially appointed secretary general of Podemos this past weekend. He said that Spain’s newest party is working hard on developing a program to win the 2015 elections as he and his aides are making progress on “a battery of economic measures” to restart the ailing economy and give power back to the people.
CHICKEN ASSAULT Murcia police said that a woman had to flee to a neighbor's house last week after being attacked in her home by her ex-partner. The assault took place in the hamlet of Murcia El Raal. The man, aged 42 and of Ukrainian nationality was arrested and taken to the Guardia Civil post in Santomera where he was charged with assaulting is former partner with a bag of frozen chicken drumsticks.
The Los Verdes of Torrevieja are calling for the sports city to have the name Infanta Cristina removed from the title, after the Princess was charged in a tax fraud case. Their aim is to have the centre free from any reference to an individual, simply carrying the descriptive name of “Palacio Municipal de Deportes”. The initiative also form part of a proposal to prevent names being given to Torrevieja landmarks of people whose conduct and behaviour has not been noted for as exemplary, and as in this case, could be questioned for their alleged involvement in the commission of a criminal offense or corruption scandal, either by action or omission.
AIRPORT BUS PASSENGERS GROWING In the first 10 months of this year, a total of 74,393 passengers have used the express bus service to Alicante-Elche airport, an increase of 17.4% over the same period of 2013.
PP PRESIDENT DIES The honorary president of the PP in Dolores, Antonio Ruiz, died last week at age 82. He was a councilor until 1999 and candidate for mayor on several occasions. Ruiz began his political career in 1977 under the banner of the UCD.
BAG MAN Former world number one tennis player, Juan Carlos Ferrero, has said that he will be caddying for Sergio Garcia next month when the Spanish golfer sets out in defense of the Thailand Open in Chonburi. In the tournament, which will be held between 11 and 14 December, Garcia will face double Masters champion Bubba Watson, the winner of the US Open, Martin Kaymer, as well as Lee Westwood and South Africa’s Ernie Els.
It follows on from the group demanding the withdrawal of the title of adopted son of Torrevieja given to the former President of Valencia, Francisco Camps, and the defence minister, Federico Trillo, as well as the calls to remove recognition given to the former mayor of the city, now a convicted criminal, Pedro Angel Hernández Mateo. The Greens believe that municipalities should be take exemplary measures to help regenerate the political image, banishing from our streets, squares and public buildings the names of all of those that have not been highlighted as respecting the laws and serve with honesty, the citizens from the positions held and the institutions they represent.
During the month of October, 7,717 passengers used the service, 3,875 leaving Torrevieja to go to Alicante-Elche airport, 3,842 using the service to the city from the airport. In October of 2013, the number of passengers was 7,198. In January of this year, 4,093 people used the service, there were 3,927 in March, 5,015 in May, in April there were 6,873, May saw 7,694, June
amounted to 8,748, July saw 11,012, August had 10,325, September saw 8,989 and then the 7,717 in October. The service departs Torrevieja every odd hour from 07:00 to 21:00, returning from the airport on every second even hour from 08:00 to 22:00. With 8 services each way, every day of the year, the service is express between the two points and travels on the motorway network, avoiding the N-332 coastal road. The theoretical capacity for the service on a 50seater coach is 400 passengers each way per day, the equivalent of 12,000 seats in each direction per month, and so with a total of 24,000 seats available each month, only July has so far seen the service used near half of the capacity. During the whole year of 2013, a total of 72,049 passengers were carried, representing an increase of 39.5% over 2012, when 51,660 people used the service of the theoretical 292,000 annual seats available.

TORREVIEJA TREE DRESSING CAMPAIGN OPEN Torrevieja´s department of commerce has once again launched a Christmas Tree Decorating competition, the fifth year it has been held, in which city centre shops and registered associations can compete to win some great prizes. The First Prize up for grabs is 675 euro, second prize is 425 euro and third prize is 150 euro, all along with a diploma recognising your achievement. The aim of the campaign, according to the councillor responsible, Agustina Esteve, is both to encourage and boost local trade, whilst also creating a more festive atmosphere in the streets of the city. Registration will be open from the 24th to the 28th of November and applications to decorate one of the trees must be submitted through the Bureau of Registration, on Calle Bazan, No. 6. Only the first 12 applications will be accepted though, as this is the maximum number of trees the town hall wish to adorn the streets as part of the campaign. The trees will then be assembled on the 5th of December, with the winning trees being decided by a popularity vote between the 9th and the 21st of December, with a jury having the final say if needed.
STREETS RENAMED IN HONOUR OF FORMER RESIDENTS Eight streets are to be re named in Los Balcones after former Torrevimeja residents who excelled in the world of culture and education. At a ceremony carried out in the Torrevieja Plenary hall last week the mayor, Eduardo Dolon, paid homage to the individuals in front of many of their family and friends. Most of those honoured were former teachers and painters from the town. They were named as, teachers Parres Jaime Hernandez, Jose Manuel Gutierrez Rodriguez, Cyril Andreu Perez and Lorenzo Antonio Conesa and painters Jesus Baeza Hernández and José Mayol Pamies. The two further selections were poet Leandro Baeza Perez and Maria Garrigós who died recently in a road accident. The mayor, accompanied by Councillor Inmaculada Montesinos, handed over each of the street signs to family members of those honoured prior to posing with them in the traditional family photo. He said that they were all individuals who had given so much to Torrevieja and as such their names will always be remembered in the city where they worked and lived.

ORIHUELA COUNCILLOR TABLES ANTICORRUPTION MOTION IN PLENARY Asuncion Mayoral, ostracised member of the CLr political group and unassigned councillor of Orihuela, aims to table a motion in the plenary meeting that prevents politicians accused in corruption cases from standing for election.
Of course should the motion be tabled it would rely on the majority seat holders agreeing to the move, a position held by the Partido Popular who also have the most politicians at risk of therefore being excluded on account of the cases against them already.
However, still considering a positive outcome, Mayoral says that she hopes to have the votes from the entire Municipal Corporation because it will show commitment from all parties “not to allow people who are being investigated for crimes related to public administration to continue in public office”. Mayoral also explained that many cities that have already adopted a similar agreement unanimously, as in the case of Alicante, where numerous corruption cases are also progressing, as “Keeping a political liability when you are charged is irresponsible”, she said. Mayoral also wants to raise the point in parliament, with a proposal for special courts to be created to deal with political corruption, as has already been the case in other areas of public protection such as gender violence. She says that this would relieve the pressure on the judicial system and ease the process of proceedings in such cases, whilst providing a platform of defence for those who are accused.

COAST IGNORED AS CHRISTMAS ILLUMINATES ORIHUELA Here on the coast we are of course all absolutely delighted that the preparation for Christmas in Orihuela seems to be well underway with the erection of many new lighting displays, as the Ayuntamiento and the Merchants Association (mAb) prepare their activities in anticipation of the forthcoming celebrations. It is so heartwarming to appreciate that they are largely funded by the residents of the coast. The Orihuela Association say that it all bodes well for the Christmas season during which they expect to see an increase in retail sales. However mAb spokesperson Mila Serna said that ‘ we are forced to take our initiatives ahead of schedule, as customers now spread their purchases over a much longer period, starting in late November and continuing into the early days of January sales campaign.’ She said that campaigns such as the Christmas lights are increasingly important to encourage local trade. But as I see no such attractions being installed onto the streets and in the commercial areas of the Orihuela Costa it just seems such a pity that, once again, as is the case year on year, in their ivory towers in Orihuela the Ayuntamiento once again fail to realize that the same situation also applies to the residents of the coast who equally rely on such displays and incentives to bring in the trade to an area, the finances from which, largely fund their existence.

POSITIVE RESULT FOR ORIHUELA PP CENSURE MOTION A court has this week dismissed the petition by Bob Houliston and the Table of Elders to paralyze the censure motion that prevented the Partido Popular from taking over the government earlier this year. This particular case revolved around whether councillors Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio LópezBas, belonged to their representative political party when they signed motion raised by the PP. The twelve members of the Partido Popular, led by Pepa Ferrando, and two members of a Clr-CLARO coalition, presented the motion on the 20th of December last year, which was to be debated and formally voted on during a special plenary meeting
scheduled for the 3rd of January. Should the vote had gone as expected, the PP would have ousted the bi-partite government and resumed power, but the Table of Elders blocked the move, as it had failed to meet the “legal requirements”. At a press conference, the secretary general of the PP, Dámaso Aparicio, explained that the court ruling clarifies that the appeal details how the two members were part of the parties they represented, and so “it is clear” which steps now need to be taken in court, and there is “no doubt that the political party existed”.
ORIHUELA GETS HIGH SPEED MOBILE INTERNET Orihuela is the latest place to benefit from high speed mobile internet, as Orange launched the 4G services in the city this week. After 1.5 million euro investment, the town of Desamparados, the industrial estate at Puente Alto, and the Ociopía comercial centres are now covered, along with the Orihuela Costa areas of La Dehesa de Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Regia, La Zenia, La Florida and Villacosta. A recent clean up of the radio airwaves was carried out on the Orihuela Costa, after it was discovered that a number of radio stations and Wi-Fi network providers were interfering with the new network. Operating at ten times the speed of normal mobile internet, Orange has over 2 million 4G users on their network that covers 66% of the population of the country. At the end of the year, the 4G network will be in more than 500 municipalities and in all populations of over 25,000 residents, as well as airports, shopping centres and trade shows.
MILITARY SPENDING INCREASE The Spanish government is set to increase military spending, with nearly 2% added to the 2015 budget, that will see 17 billion euro spent on new equipment. Amongst the items on the MOD´s shopping list are five new F-110 anti-submarine warships designed for high intensity combat missions, up to 400 armoured vehicles, three A330MRTT tanker aircrafts and four drones, capable of carrying up to 3,000 pounds of armaments and four S-80 submarines.

ADDITIONAL 1.2 MILLION EURO TO FIGHT PINE DISEASE
Following publication of our story two weeks ago ‘The Unstoppable Plague’, The Valencia Consell has promised an addition 1.2 million euros from European Funds to help fight the pine tree disease, ‘Tomicus destruens’ which is sweeping across the Veja Baja. Valencia’s Councillor for Infrastructure, Planning and Environment, Isabel Bonig announced the allocation that will be added to the 200,000 euros already promised. The funding will allow a further 30 workers to be hired for next year. She said that the situation has deteriorated in recent weeks and there are now a hundred municipalities

affected in the Valencian Community, including, Orihuela, Alicante, Elche, Callosa de Segura and Redován. Bonig attributed much of the current problem to the extreme drought experienced in the area in recent months leading to a situation that has seen a large increase in the number of pests and diseases, especially in the pine forests. She also said that the problem was now so severe that the Department may also intervene on private land, regardless of its ownership The additional funding has been allocated from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development
Bonomi, a subsidiary of the Investindustrial investment group which also has an interest in Aston Martin, Ducati and PortAventura, has acquired an 80% stake in Spanish car hire company Goldcar. The remaining 20% will remain with the original founders. According to a statement, Goldcar is the leading value holiday car rental company in Southern Europe, with 32,000 vehicles and a leading market share in Spain, as well as a significant presence in Italy, Portugal and Malta. Goldcar Spain were fined 15,456,219 euro by the competition commission in 2013 and, despite that, expect sales of 225 million euro this year.

MURCIA TO BUILD FIRE TRAINING CENTRE
The former mayor, Ignacio Ramos, is emerging as the only possible candidate in the PSOE leadership contest in Pilar de la Horadada running up to next year’s Municipal elections.
The councillor, who was mayor for over 15 years, was to only candidate to show up at the PSOE Primary held last week, where 40 party members gathered to select their representative. Ramos retired from his job as a teacher during the period of his office as the town mayor between 1995 and 2011. A town of over 20,000 inhabitants neither of the major parties in Pilar de la Horadada has governed with an absolute majority since December 2006. Between 2007 and 2011 the PSOE required the support of independents to form a government and the PP, led by Mayor Jose Fidel Ros is in the same situation as it continues to govern today. All indications are that this trend will continue in the May 2015 elections.
DORNIER EXHIBITION OPENS IN PILAR The photographic exhibition to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the aircraft, "The Adventure of the Dornier 15/16," was opened in Pilar de la Horadada earlier in the week by the Councillor for Culture, Benjamin Fraile and lecturer Antonio Zapata, who has previously run similar exhibitions in Los Alcazares, San Pedro and elsewhere. It will be available to visit at the Casa de Cultura en C/ Carretillas, 19, until the 9th of December, during regular hours, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 2pm. and from 4 to 9pm. Find out more at: http://www.pilardelahoradada.es
Murcia is to build the first Fire training center in the region and one of the few centers of its kind in Spain. It is planned to open its doors in late 2015 The announcement was made by the region’s Security council member, Nuria Fuentes, who said that the project will be located at the entrance to the Industrial park, San Ginés, a site without residential buildings, thereby avoiding possible nuisance to neighbors from combustion, gases or simply the noise arising from Firefighter training. The plot of about 9,000 square meters will be replicated along the lines of a housing complex relevant to the development of operations and practices of fire. This center will have a large open space for maneuvering, a unit made up of confined spaces and collapsed structures, an industrial area comprised of metallic structures, a container yard, a bunker for explosions and a pool for salvage and diving train-
ing. There will also be an apartment building with two basements and four upper floors, as well as classrooms and offices, a laboratory and a warehouse. The project has been awarded to Urbamusa, with an estimated total budget of 580,000 euros. The training facility will better prepare firefighters of the City of Murcia for their roles in providing emergency and public disaster support. In addition, the Service will teach fire prevention for schools, associations and businesses. Currently, due to lack of facilities such training has to be carried out in either Madrid, Seville or Barcelona as well as some specific skills in Gijon and Pontevedra. As well as provision for training the three fire services in the Region (Murcia, Cartagena and the Regional Consortium) the centre will also offer support to many neighboring services including Orihuela and Torrevieja.

CHILDREN TAKE OVER GOVERNMENT International Children´s Day was recognised once again in both Torrevieja and Orihuela, with a special plenary session held where the future generations of the community could take their position as part of the governmental mechanism. In Torrevieja, the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, stressed in his statement the four fundamental principles of the Rights of the Child. Children should not suffer discrimination. The interest of the child must be paramount when decisions affecting them are made. All children have the right to survival and development; these include the right both mental and physical development. Children need to express their views and always have to take into account issues affecting them. In Orihuela this year, pupils form the Playas de Orihuela and Los Dolses schools on the coast joined others from surrounding villages and city centre to ask the councillors questions about their municipalities. A representative from UNICEF in Spain attended Orihuela, where the acting Mayor, Antonio Zapata, chair the session as the children raised points relating to everything from the increase in class sizes and the reduction in teachers, to their local area and their rights to be treated
equally. Forming a now annual part of the school calendar, now in its seventh year in Orihuela, the children are all of around 11 years of age, and find the experience both educational and rewarding, with some spectators commenting how the children were far better behaved and mature than some of the adults who normally attend the sessions. As part of the process before attending, the teachers split classes into groups to discuss and debate a number of topics under the guidelines set out by UNICEF, before deciding which questions should be raised. The whole process not only leads to an educational experience of how government and debate works, but also about both their rights and duties as members of the municipality. Not only was their experience a fruitful one which they then take back to school to discuss the outcome, as the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, explained, “I looked across at the children sat there and I thought to myself, I wonder if one of these will be a future mayor?”, as it could well be that their first taste of politics could well lead them into a future of serving the community as the future generation of councillors, ministers and potentially even world leaders.

FINDING LORCA Five years after the Andalusian government unsuccessfully searched for the body of poet and playwright Federico García Lorca in Alfacar, diggers are back in the area. Authorities have sent heavy machinery to begin excavating in the Peñón del Colorado, where researcher Miguel Caballero believes the unmarked grave of one of Spain’s greatest literary figures could be. García Lorca was executed by Nationalist forces at the start of the Spanish Civil War. His body was never found.
GOING DOWN Spanish singer Isabel Pantoja has been ordered to report to prison within three days to serve her two-year sentence for money-laundering after Málaga provincial court on Wednesday rejected all appeals and requests to suspend her punishment. However the 58-year-old star, who was involved a massive property kickbacks-and-bribes scheme in the Costa del Sol is free to choose the prison in which she will serve time. Her lawyer, José Ángel Galán, said she would not request a government pardon.

Having home insurance cover in Spain is not compulsory by law. However, at Linea Directa we highly recommend that you cover your buildings and their contents. Without insurance you will be fully responsible for footing the bill to any damages resulting from fire and water, a neighbours property, and you’ll be left unprotected against theft or damage from a wide range of potential mishaps. Your property in Spain may be let out and treated as a holiday home or it may be your permanent residence. In all cases, adequate home insurance is a must; after all, your property will certainly be one of your most valuable personal assets, and you need to protect it as such. When you take out a Spanish mortgage, one of the conditions from the bank will be compulsory buildings insurance from the lender to ensure that the bank loan is secured against risks to properties in Spain. Linea Directa can provide online quotes for Spanish buildings insurance. Its quick and easy and we will help you find the best deal for the needs of your particular cover. What’s at stake for uninsured properties? Most standard building insurance policies in Spain cover the actual structure of the building as well as the fixtures and fittings. This includes the roof, walls, windows, kitchen, bathroom installations and fitted wardrobes. Individual items of furniture and any personal possessions are not included. This requires a Spanish home contents insurance policy. The common elements included in your building insurance will be for occurrences like subsidence, third-party liability and protection against damage caused by theft, storms, vandalism, fire and flood. Home insurance with Linea Directa Linea Directa provides quality home insurance cover designed specifically for expatriates living in Spain. Whether you’re an existing home-owner or looking to purchase a property in Spain, our policies guarantee peace-of-mind at very competitive prices. REMEMBRANCE PROFITEERS OR POPPY APPEAL CHAMPIONS Each year 32 million Remembrance poppies and 80,000 wreaths are made at the Poppy Factory in UK which is staffed by a team of 50 people, most of them disabled, former servicemen and women and their dependants. Originally called the Disabled Society the factory has been employing wounded, sick and injured ex-Service personnel since it was founded by Major George Howson MC in 1922 in the Old Kent Road. It’s sole purpose was to produce poppies, with the workforce being severely wounded veterans from WW1. In 1925, The Poppy Factory moved to Richmond, Surrey and there it continues to make poppies, remembrance crosses, sprays and wreaths for The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. It’s work is largely funded by the income that it receives from those poppy sales although it now also receives an increasing number of private donations. The costs of making the paper versions of the poppy are kept low to ensure that 100 per cent of voluntary donations go straight to the Royal British Legion's Appeal, but some of the snazzier versions of the little red flower - such as those worn by an increasing number of television celebrities and presenters, are not nearly as benevolent as they first appear. Kleshna, one of a number of companies with an exclusive tie-in with the Legion, sells enamelled and crystal-clad poppies for up to £59.95 - and has admitted to giving just 10 per cent of the sales to charity, a smaller percentage to that donated from the sale of the 888,246 ceramic poppies placed across the moat at the Tower of London, each sold at a cost of £25, just £8.75 from which will reach the six charities, according to official estimates, while £12.08 would cover ‘costs’. Paul Cummins, who owns the Derby factory responsible for the manufacture of the ceramic poppies, was originally bankrolled by a group of private investors who are controversially said to be making a handsome profit from the venture. However, the six service charities concerned, Confederation of Service Charities (COBSEO), Combat Stress, Coming Home, Help for Heroes, Royal British Legion and SSAFA, will still benefit by over
£1million each and interestingly enough, not one of them has publicly criticised the way the project is being run, saying they are pleased with whatever money they receive. During the local build up to the Poppy Appeal, Facebook and other Social Media sites were awash with accusations about individuals who were said to be profiteering from the manufacture of poppies. Alan Henderson? was advertising poppy items for sale on the ‘Orihuela Costa Buy and Sell’ page at a cost of 2.99 + postage, with Euro1 of each sale donated to the RBL poppy appeal. He was quickly accused of profiteering by a number of users but responded with the statement ‘There is no profit being made after material glue ect plus I buy the poppies before I donate your euro from the sale. I promise you no profit is being made from these.’ Gary Binks had quite the opposite view saying ‘ I am sick of hearing negativity on this site! Good on you Alan, don´t explain yourself as you don´t need to! It´s a great product..just a shame you have attracted negative reactions to it!’ Another facebook user, Dominique Lee, wrote ‘As the mother of a serving soldier I would gladly pay for one of these poppies. If the man says he is giving the proceeds to charity then surely can we not take him at his word. Sometimes people just think of a nice idea and don’t have the time to register as a charity. Let’s just look on the positive side and believe that this is just one person who would like to make a difference. I got the same kind of negative comments some time ago when I asked people to collect items to send to soldiers in Afghanistan for Xmas and was devastated at the character assassination i received.’ Of course the difference between Paul Cummins, his ceramic poppies, Kleshna, their poppy jewellery, and Alan Henderson and the like, is that the former two were commissioned by the RBL and Tower of London authorities to manufacture and sell their goods, making agreed contributions to a variety of appeals in the process, whilst Alan was not. So whilst the accusations of profiteering on the back of Remembrance will continue to be made, their actions are perhaps not quite as controversial as many people would like us to suppose. I have to largely agree with the sentiments posted by Gary and

Paul Cummins, the man behind the ceramic poppies
Dominique. The contributions being made to the RBL and other service Charities by these companies and individuals would not otherwise be made so where is the harm in the actions they are taking as long as the charities continue to benefit. Everyone needs to eat and recover their manufacture and production costs, whatever the size with people rarely able to devote their lives to a cause that pays them nothing. So I'm hoping the whole issue continues to concentrate on veterans, the reason for the poppy and the millions of pounds and euros that have been donated to the appeal. It was Remembrance Day, the Centenary of the outbreak of WW1, and an extremely important time in our history, so let's try to remain focused on that.

PROSECUTOR ASKS FOR CRASH INVESTIGATION TO BE REOPENED
The prosecutor has requested the case of a crashed Search and Rescue helicopter be reopened, in order to determine if criminal liability can be attributed to the tragedy that saw the loss of three of the four crew members. The crash of Helimer 207 occurred in January 2010, but recent evidence suggests that the crew did not receive “proper training for such SAR (search and rescue) flights”. The two key elements now in question are criminal responsibility for those in charge, and the fact that the only survivor, winch operator Alberto Elvira, claims that he was not allowed to give evidence in
the enquiry, despite being an “exceptional witness” of the facts, and that “he has not even had a statement taken” about what happened. The request for additional investigation seeks to deepen the investigation into the accident and determine if it could be a “crime against the rights of workers or recklessness”, which would involve both the training regime and the requisite flight hours. As the helicopter was operated by a private contractor covering the contract for search and rescue, the investigation following the crash was conducted by the Civil Aviation authority, the findings of which attributed the accident to a “misperception” on behalf of the commander on the altitude at which they were flying, a “visual illusion generalised using external references”, a “misinterpretation in reading instruments” or “a combination” of these factors and a “failure to monitor” the flight parameters by the co-pilot. The report did however question the “lack of training” and human resource management. Helimer 207 crashed into the sea about five nautical miles from the coast on the night of the 21st of January 21, 2010, when returning to its base after conducting a training exercise. The impact of the crash resulted in the death of the Commander, José Luis López Alcalá, co-pilot Kevin Holmes and rescuer Iñigo Vallejo. The crew were awarded the Gold Medal of Merit for Civil Defence for their work.

ON YOUR BIKE
Guardia Civil traffic cops have taken to two wheeled pedal power in certain parts of Spain, in order to monitor whether vehicles give the mandatory 1.5 metre distance when passing. What might come as a nasty surprise to those who don´t give enough room is the fact that the Guardia Civil are disguised as normal cyclists, with other officers waiting to penalise those offending drivers with a 200 euro fine. IN addition to the undercover surveillance, the Pagasus helicopter mounted radar is also monitoring traffic for the same reason. Depending on the results of the first phase of testing, the DGT may decide to make the cycle unit a permanent department within their armoury against bad drivers, a move applauded by professional cyclist associations around the country.
GUARDIA POW ERED BY RR The two new Guardia Civil patrol boats being built at the Astilleros Gondán shipyard in Vegadeo will be powered by Rolls Royce engines. This is the first time that the Guardia Civil fleet has been powered by engines from the British institution, with the 40S Series waterjets offering lower fuel consumption, high towing capacity, acceleration, speed and manoeuvrability, factors which are ideal for vessels which normally operate in such complex sea conditions. The manufacturers have recommended the Rolls Royce engines on account of their reliability and performance, which will drive the 20.5 metre long and 5 metre wide ships, constructed of aluminium and reinforced glass fibre.
The boats are expected to be delivered in the summer of 2015, and will focus mainly on surveillance missions and the fight against drug trafficking and illegal immigration, as well as serving as protection of the marine environment over the next 15 years, the expected life expectancy of the ships. The 2000 hp Rolls-Royce waterjets will provide a speed of 25 knots and a range of 570 miles, as defined by the Guardia Civil, with space for a crew of 5 members and radar with a range of 96 miles.

WHO’S BEEN SLEEPING IN YOUR BED
According to the Spanish association of pest controllers, ANECPLA, one visitor to our homes will become more frequent for the next few years, unless proper precautions are taken. President of the association, Milagros Fernández de Lezeta, warned in a technical conference this week, bedbugs are the visitors that are becoming an ever increasing threat to our rest and home contentment, and as “many victims turn to home remedies to deal with the pest”, they often contribute to their spread. In addition, the number of bedbugs found in Spain has increased by 70% in recent years, although the reality is that could be more likely to be caused by an increase in inspections, rather than the increase in their existence. The pest controller also pointed out during the conference that infestations of bedbugs “have nothing to do with hygiene and can be found in the cleanest of homes or luxury hotels”. They are present in most regions, but “have a special impact on the tourist regions, since it is associated with increased tourism and the international movement of goods”. In hotels and hospitals, where there is a high turnover of patients and tourists, they can spread easily and find shelter in their preferred homes, such as mattresses, pillows, bedding, headboards and nightstands. They also find shelter in chairs, cabinets, electrical wiring, baseboards, casings and doors, to name just a few of their secondary choices.
The pest controllers say that the best way to check for a bedbug infestation is to see if there are small blood stains on the sheets. If so, inspect the mattress, headboard, box spring and bedding, although they can be hidden anywhere. They will most often be found located in areas close to the beds and the bedroom because they feed exclusively on the blood and are nocturnal insects. “If you wake up with small red marks with minimal space between them, usually in the neck and arms, we may be faced with a bed bug bite”, they say, adding that “scratching should be avoided, because the bites can become infected”. Due to the difficulty of eradication and its high potential for dispersal to avoid the proliferation of this plague “it is imperative that the company has sufficient information to detect and prevent it”, according to Fernández de Lezeta, stressing that they are “not disease carriers”, but they do “cause a lot of discomfort from bites and allergic reactions, as they feed on human blood”. One of the most problematic areas of treating an infestation is the large capacity and dispersion of the species, the expert warns, which is why the problem must be addressed by an expert at the moment of detection. It is also suggested that before performing a treatment you should wash all bedding, clothing, etc., at high temperatures, at least 60º, especially if you return from a trip. In these cases it is advisable to check the luggage and wash all clothes. Finally, the use of mattress covers can prevent the bedbugs settling into our beds.

POLITICAL FUTURE Former mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente, has announced that she is 4 months pregnant, expecting the birth of a son around April. The father is ex environmental councillor Fernando Modrego, also from the Partido Popular.
WATER SPILL Thousands of gallons of water were lost on Sunday in Orihuela caused by a crack in the TajoSegura pipeline. The break caused the flooding of surrounding lands and forced the closure of adjacent roads. As technicians worked to repair the problem last Monday the authorities lowered the pressure of the water flow to minimize the water escape.
DIRTY CALLOSA The Socialist opposition of Callosa de Segura has criticized the cuts in street cleaning that have recently been agreed upon by the City Council in the renegotiation of the contract with la mercantil Sirem. They say that they have led to a "sorry picture" in the town which is dirty, not something that either the residents or the visitors deserve. They have further criticized the mayor, Javier Pérez (PP), for his closure of the eco park which they say should be immediately reopened.

NOSTALGIA AND PENGUINS IN OUR TV HIGHLIGHTS We start this week´s TV talk with a blast from the not too distant past, the 1970´s. Do you remember a film called Westworld? Where robot men and women are programmed to serve you for …Romance …Violence …Anything? That´s taken directly from the poster by the way. It starred Yul Brynner as The Gunslinger in a futuristic theme park where paying guests can pretend to be gunslingers in an artificial Wild West populated by androids. Well, remember it or not, the buzz from America this week is that HBO are set to bake a series based on the original novel by Michael Crichton starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris. Certainly set to be one for the science fiction fans and those looking for a little 70´s nostalgia, although it was a little scary in places. On the subject of scary, Frankenstein is rearing his ugly head once again, this time in the form of a sixpart period crime drama starring Sean Bean. “An evil that almost defies reason” is how the opening line introduces the concept of The Frankenstein Chronicles, described as a thrilling and terrifying re-imagining of the Frankenstein myth. Incorporating elements from the investigative and horror genres with an extraordinary hero at its centre, Inspector John Marlott, played by Mr Bean, (no, not THAT Mr Bean), it promises a terrifying

journey in pursuit of a chilling and diabolical foe. Set in Regency London in 1827, the drama’s opening sequences show the Home Secretary, Sir Robert Peel, following a successful operation by Thames River Police to apprehend a gang of opium smugglers, recruit Marlott. As he stands on the water’s edge contemplating the arrest of the smugglers, Marlott makes a shocking discovery. The body of a dead child is washed up on the shore and on further examination of the corpse he is horrified to discover it’s not actually a child but rather a crude assembly of body parts arranged in a grotesque parody of a human form. The mutilated child-like body leaves an indelible impression on Marlott and he finds himself unable to shake off the memory of what has happened that fateful night. Filming will begin in Northern Ireland in January. On the subject of river banks, or in this case the Manchester Ship Canal, ITV have also confirmed another live episode of Coronation Street next year, which will be filmed at Coronation Street's new state-of-the-art production base on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal overlooking MediaCity in Salford. The idea is to mark ITV’s 60 years on air and will broadcast in September. “We’re delighted to be marking ITV’s 60th anniversary with a live episode from Coronation Street’s brilliant new studios and set,” said Executive Producer Kieran Roberts. More details will be released nearer the time, but one thing we do know is that the man behind the Emmerdale live show will also be heading this broadcast, Coronation Street Producer Stuart Blackburn. Sticking with the water theme of this week,
Fans of Derek will be pleased to know that Ricky Gervais is returning to Channel 4 in the lead role, for a Christmas special
although now it´s of the frozen kind, the BBC has announced a new natural history commission for BBC One, to be broadcast in 2015, called Snow Chick, an hour long special described as set to enchant and enthral viewers with a unique and heart-wrenching real life story about penguins. Obviously not trying to muscle in on the success of Monty the penguin, the show will feature both emperor penguins and the characterful and now famous Adélie penguins, Snow Chick will tell the story of an emperor penguin chick growing up in the coldest place on Earth in the middle of the Antarctic winter. Focusing on the vulnerable and charismatic penguin chick, the film will follow his adventures from the time he emerges from the egg to the moment he leaves for the sea as a boisterous adolescent, before auditioning for his sharp rise to fame as the star of a TV commercial. We may have
made the last part up, but the rest is very true. A little bit of comedy now and fans of Derek will be both pleased and disappointed to know that Ricky Gervais is returning to Channel 4 in the lead role, but it is for a one off Christmas special that will end the show once and for all. Hannah's relationship with Tom blossoms, since he has found a new job close to home. Vicky finds her true calling in the care industry, whilst Kev realises the true meaning of family. Meanwhile Derek is still dating Tracey, all the while holding the Retirement Home together with his unique viewpoint on life. Ricky Gervais said “I did toy with a third series, particularly after the Emmy nod, but I decided to stick to my usual formula of 2 series and a special. It’s a bittersweet experience as always. I’m sorry to end it but I know that leaving something you love and starting something else is always the best thing to do creatively”.

MAJOR RETAILERS SHOWING REAL SIGNS OF RECOVERY This Christmas season is looking like being the first spark to a real explosion in growth into next year, as some of Spain´s major retailers are showing positive signs for the future for the first time in many years. Swedish multinational clothing firm Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) has announced that it will open 8 new online stores across Europe in 2015, including serving Spain from August. The aim is to bolster their high street activities, which has seen 356 global stores open this year alone, bringing the total number of retail outlets in the group to 6,393 in 88 international markets. In Spain, the company´s sales increased by 11% in the first quarter of the year, with the overall sales in October increasing by 14% over last year. Meanwhile, department store El Corte Inglés are also showing significant signs of recovery, having
announced that they will employ an additional 2,000 people during the Christmas period this year, the first time they have done so since the economic crisis took hold in 2008. The Christmas period accounts for 20% of their annual sales and increases to 50% in certain sectors such as toys and perfume. Ikea and Carrefour have also announced similar recruitment drives as part of their strategy to boost consumption this season. December 2013 was the first Christmas period that showed a positive growth for El Corte Inglés, with a 0.6% increase in sales above the 2.1% average increase of the year, and as income tax cuts become effective on the 1st of January, they hope that more people will be ready to spend even more of their disposable income than ever before, marking a real turn around in the economy of the country as consumer spending starts to increase naturally.

HOUSING SALES CONTINUE TO GROW
According to data compiled by the General Council of Notaries, House sales rose by 8.6% in the third quarter of the year compared with the same period last year, while, in the same period, house prices fell by an average of 4%. Thus, between January and September 2014, the average quarterly figure of 84,166 sales was higher than in the same period last year, when it averaged 70,298 transactions. However the sales of new homes shrank by 32.8% in September compared to the same month last year, while re sales showed a growth of 25.4% . Other figures show that the average price per square foot for houses purchased in September was 1,187 euros, reflecting a decline of 2.9%, whilst in the case of apartments the decline amounted to 1.1%. In their report the General Council of Notaries says
that these figures demonstrate that the third quarter has seen a recovery in terms of the annual numbers of house sales, but not their prices, which have continued to fall in most areas of the Valencian community.
COMPANIES SANCTIONED FOR WEBSITE INACCESSIBILITY The Spanish Ministry of Health has opened disciplinary proceedings against department store chain El Corte Inglés, airline Iberia and telecom company Jazztel, after complaints were raised relating to the accessibility of their websites for people with disabilities. The policy directorate of the ministry has initiated the legal proceedings against the companies for potential breach of regulations on accessibility, according to the Cermi disability rights group. The ministry have given the companies 15 days to respond to the claims, or sanctions will be enforced, although the period of defence can be extended in the event of a positive resolution being agreed.

180´s: Peter Ayres (Porter House), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov (Meerkats), Mike Smith (Breakaways), Shaun Smith (Hyenas) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) This week´s highest finish Sid Cross 106 (Porter House) The Hyenas suffered their first defeat of the season, in an all Hub affairs against the Meerkats. No home advantage in this one, the Hyenas in a real buoyant mood after numerous classy performances, the Meerkats viewing the match with trepidation after some poor team and individual displays. Simon Williams´ side now have Nick Spicer, a superb player giving them a real edge this season, the Kats a player down this term, John Eyre having a season´s sabbatical; these factors in my book, make the Hyenas favourites for both the league and cup competitions, but this week they didn’t quite achieve their expectations. Hyenas got off on the right foot with Joe Hawkins 100 and Spicer 140 contributing to a 200 point lead in the 701. The advantage was quickly eradicated by way of powerful scoring from Alex Nikolov, Pat Abrams and Paul Durrant. Hawkins had one arrow for tops which found D1 leaving Durrant on 84. A single 20 and 14 left the bull which was found third arrow for first blood. A disappointing leg from Shaun Smith, Cyril Harrison and Lee Holtham allowed the Kats to increase their lead through Lee Maiden on D20 after Alan Ostrowski´s 125. It should have been 3-0 but poor finishing from the Kats allowed Spicer 100 and 97 to ¨nick¨ the leg on D8. Joe Miller made it all square using D8 to complete the 601, Abrams and Nikolov mustering a lone ton between them. Hawkins and Spicer enjoyed the throw in the second pairs versus Maiden and Durrant, but couldn’t capitalise as Durrant 2x100 and Maiden 100 and D4 made it 3-2. A splendid 96 out from Graham Todd (S20,T18,D11) plus a ton from Ostrowski gave the Kats a 4-2 half time lead. Miller opened up the singles with a 2-0 victory over Durrant taking out D20 and D3, setting up Spicer to level the match with 4x100,95,D15 and finally D10. The in-form Smith faced Abrams for the lead in the third singles. Two tons from the Hyena wasn’t enough to prevent Abrams scoring 140 and D4 for the opening leg and then 100,118,D16 for the game. Harrison played his usual steady self, beating Ostrowski 2-0 on D8 and D10
The Kestrels preparing for their match with the Queens. with a ton thrown in, to level the overall match at 5-5. An 8 ton ding dong followed when Miller 2x100,134 and 140 played Nikolov 3x100,140 for the lead. It was the Bulgarian, surprisingly in a subdued mood, who found both doubles D9 and D9 to regain the lead and a precious team point. It was Lee v. Lee in the 12th, Maiden and Holtham for a Kats victory or a deserved draw. Holtham took the first on D8 after 100 and 114, Maiden the second 100,D20 setting up a decider in the very last match leg. Maiden had throw, which proved crucial as Holtham banged in 100 and 112, his opponent responding with a ton and opportunity for first throw at the double, accomplished next throw on D16. Great match, tremendous atmosphere and a credit to both sides. Breakaways Bears maintain their unbeaten record in Division 2, taking out a rapidly improving Ale House led by Karl Mallinson, licensee of the popular Villamartin bar. In fact it was Mallinson who levelled the score after two triples on D8 after, who else but Mike Smith had opened the Bears account on D4. Mike Douglas top scored for the Bears with a 125. Smith was at it again in the third with 100 and 120 but it was Mike Snow taking the honours and lead for the Bears on D4. Smith teamed up with top gun Sarah Simpson in the first pairs and promptly increased the lead to 3-1 despite some tasty scoring from Anthony Brum 81,100 and Brian Hobbis. Snowy´s 125 was insufficient as Enrica Portugal took out D20 followed by Mallinson and Barry Whipday finishing their 601 ahead of Del Lister and Mike Douglas for 3 apiece. Lister was chosen as first singles and justified the decision with 2x100, 2x81 and D16, trading dart for dart with Hobbis who returned a ton and 2x85. Ivan Jones made it 5 for the Bears, Tony Woods giving a good account despite the loss. A tidy 501 from Smith, completed on D20 ensured the draw and point for the hosts. Brum gave the Ale House a glimmer of hope taking the next against Simpson, but the inevitable arrived in the 11th courtesy of Douglas on D14 for the match, a spirited performance from Whipday wasted. Mallinson played well enough to take the final leg, but hadn’t accounted for a useful Snowy performance ending the evening on D16 after some prolific scoring. Ale House are on the move and will certainly improve on their current position. The Porter House found themselves 4-5 down with 3 to play facing a home defeat against the unpredictable Jackals from the Junction. Yvonne Rouffignac figured significantly during the match and was the lone ton scorer in the opening leg, former comedian Peter Ayres taking out D10. Andy Gildea levelled on D16 and then took the third on D20 for an early lead, Jim Scott helping out Gildea with a ton. Scott managed a further ton in the opening pairs, but Ayres got his second out of the night, this time on D9, partner Rouffignac scoring three figures. Two tons from Sid Cross in the fifth leg was countered by Kenny Wilkinson´s D18 out, fortunately skipper Ray Sanderson came to the Porters´ rescue in the 6th, with a ton and D14 for 3-3. Scott gave the Jackals the lead in the first singles winning 2-0 with a 140,D16,D20 against Ray Hayes. Rouffignac completed her evening´s darts with a 2-0 victory over Keith King on D4 and D16 with a 134 on the way. Gildea came from 1 down to Brian Nash´s D2
taking the next two on D10 and D20 plus a 121 and 100. Phil de Lacy looked favourite to earn the Jackals a draw after gaining the first leg to Sanderson. The Porter levelled on D19 after a 116, setting up a decider. Although de Lacy hit a ton it was the captain who retrieved the game on D2 for all square and two to play. Cross and Steph Simpson traded tons in the 11th, Cross nailing 106 in the first (S20,T18,D16), Simpson levelling on D10 with a ton. The Porter completed the third leg on D20 to earn at least a point. Ayres finished the comeback taking the last and both points on D1 and D5. Pint Depot Kings are still struggling to find the form of last season and despite a glimmer from Gary Minor 100x2 and Matt Cummins 123,100 it was nowhere near enough against the Que Pasa Eagles, this week including the high profile John Walker. The Eagles man eased himself back into the frame after returning from the UK whilst undergoing medical treatment with 140, 2x121 and 2x100, assisted by Stuart Clark 140,120,2x100 and Jim Waddel´s 2x100. Dave Wright opened for the Kings on D20 but Kevin Wood planted both doubles for 1-2 after the 3´s. The Eagles took all three doubles via Clark, Jim Storey and Walker, Minor excelling scoring wise but unable to convert into victory. Wood made sure of a team point winning 2-0 against Martin Bynorth, the next leg claimed by Storey for the match against Frank Wieczorek who took the middle leg on D16. Cummins showed what the Kings can do on going out on S15, bull in the next but Den Hall recovered to take the remaining two for 8-1. Eddie Fozzard took two of the three versus Storey for 8-2, followed by Wright looking likely to topple Walker with some great scoring, but the experienced Walker did some prolific scoring of his own to enable finishing of D8 and D16. Minor took the valuable scalp of Clark wrapping up the match on D20 after Clark had gone 1 up. Jaguars sit nicely in third spot after victory over Evolution. The hosts took full advantage over a depleted Evolution side who have some very good players, particularly young Jak Doggart and Luke Nicholls. Between them they mustered three finishes and 8 scores of 80 plus, including a tidy 79 out from Doggart, something for Evolution to build on. A decent performance in the scoring and doubles department from Simone de Lacy, Hilda Wilkinson, Tracy Simpson, Wendy Hayward and Pat Schofield was just too much for the visitors, particularly after Angie Craggs had scored 108 with 2xbull and S8, what was she going for? Steve Woods recovered from an “iffy” Lo Romero round of golf this week to star in his team´s tussle with Busters. A 119, 135 and 140 helped his side to a draw, Ray Harvey rescuing a point for Busters in the 12th leg. It was nip and tuck throughout, neither side being more than one leg in front at any time. Irene Russell 2x100, Mark Filer 135,140 and Ray Harvey 2x100 contributed to Busters tally, Kevin Fitzpatrick 2x100 assisting Woods´ side. Justin Hepburn earned the Tavern Drivers a point at Sporting Life after being 4-2 down at half time. John Dursley 100,115 and Ralph Weatherby 100 somehow lost to the efforts from Cheryl McGlynn and Leah Chesworth in the second pairs, Sonya Cooper top scoring in the next with a 131. It all happens down the Sporting Life, this week a certain female decided to play without her top, but did she win her singles? Pop down to the Life to find out. Pint Depot Queens found themselves 3-0 down to the Kestrels but woke up and were level at half time. Michelle Lane put the Kestrels in front on D13 only for the Queens to make it 4 legs via who else but Debbie Wright on D11 with a possible win on the cards. As you might guess it didn’t happen as the Kestrels reeled off the next 4, Chris Miles taking the 7th leg and both points. John Lane and Alan Preston starred for the Kestrels, whilst Marie Dunne and Debbie Wright showed the way for the Royals. Paul Durrant, League Chairman.

WHILE IN TURKEY for the Race to Dubai Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson and Lee Westwood were invited to try hitting golfballs over the walls of the impressive 2000 year old amphitheatre of Aspendos. Ian Poulter remained at the hotel, tweeting that because of the gorgeous food he was too full to move. Perhaps he should have gone out and practised his putting. THE 2015 IRISH OPEN will be played on a course familiar to both Rickie Fowler and Rory MciIroy. Royal County Down in Northern Ireland hosted the 2007 Walker Cup when the two first duelled as 18 year old amateurs. After McIlroy was victorious this year at the Open and PGA Championship the two were reunited at the Ryder Cup when McIlroy again got the upper hand both in the foursomes and in their Sunday singles match, winning 5 and 4. Fowler is keen to have another shot at McIlroy. "When Rory told me the Irish Open was going to Royal County Down I was really keen to play. We will have plenty to reminisce about” he added, polishing his Derringer before slipping it into the inside pocket of his raincoat (sorry, got carried away.) PAUL AZINGER cashed in after the 2008 Ryder Cup by writing a telltale book and embarrassing the players. Paul McGinley will not be doing the same. “I wanted the lads to know that what happened behind the scenes stayed there” he said, “so I promised there would be no book.” Stout fellow. MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ may be on the short list for 2016 Ryder Cup Captain but his lack of fluency in English may scupper him. Fellow countryman Sergio Garcia doesn’t think Jimenez’s English, while OK for ordering cigars, is good enough to deal with the demands of the job. At least he has plenty of time to sign up for night classes. GOLF MANUFACTURERS have unleashed a new range of expensive toys on recession hit
America, proving that their heads are still firmly either in the sand or the clouds. TaylorMade’s offerings include the R15 driver, with Front Track Technology. Two sliding weights can be moved to a variety of positions in the head, changing the combinations of distance, forgiveness and draw/fade bias. The Front Track also acts as a Speed Pocket, which expands the size of the sweetspot and reduces spin. Only £369! Just in time for Christmas! As if that weren’t enough, the new RSi irons feature Face Slot Technology; slots either side of the face which according to TM, work in conjunction with Speed Pockets to give improved performance on shots that don’t hit the sweetspot. The RSi 1 irons replace the Speedblades, the R15 driver the SLDR. So tough luck on the shops that invested in SLDRs and Speedblades. GOLF MOVES DOWN UNDER this month with the Australian Open, Masters and PGA. If Adam Scott managed to win his third gold jacket in Melbourne at the weekend he will next have to face Rory McIlroy. Rory, fresh from collecting his goodies in Dubai will be winging over to defend his Australian Open title in Sydney on November 27th. The PGA Championship on the Gold Coast in early December follows. It will be the last chance this season for the world No. 2. to hang a major trophy on his Christmas Tree. EL PARAISO AT LA SERENA SUNDAY 16TH Club de Golf El Paraiso’s second competition was held on the course known as the “Watery Grave” for golf balls, La Serena and all those playing enjoyed a rather nice warm day, albeit the 5+ hours to complete a round wasn’t all that enjoyable, but at least the sun was shining and the course was in very good condition. El Paraiso sponsored this event and the winners were quite surprised at the prizes where the winners of the two categories received not just one green fee voucher for La Marquesa, but two vouchers which also included a buggy. Even the runners-up received a green fee voucher for La Serena. The recipients of these prizes in Category 2 was Harry Conrad who took top spot in that Category with 323 points, pushing V Garcia into 2nd place on the lower handicap system. 3rd place went to S Soneson with 30 points. Category 1 was won by Norbert Spaniol whose 35 points was the best on the day. In 2nd place was Les Cox and way back in 3rd place with 30 points was Steve Higgins 3 of the 4 NTP’s were won and a sleeve of Srixon golf balls went to Harry Konrad and Norbert Spaniol (twice). El Parariso’s next outing is at Alenda on Sunday 7th December 2014 and Roda follows the following week. Bookings for these two competitions can be made on the website www.clubdegolfelparaiso.com or by calling the caddie master on 661524101.
A presentation dinner at the Fairways Restaurant completed the Hub Golf Society´s 2014 summer season. 15 Grand Prix events culminated at Font Del Llop, Dave Lethaby winning only his first event this season but ensuring he came out on top of the leader board. In fact his two closest rivals Paul Durrant and Simon Williams both won two events, but three third spots plus two runners up placings gave the likeable Bristolian a clear 5 point winning margin over second place Durrant, Williams two more points adrift. The best 8 from 15 format ensured a close finish, five players were in with a chance at the Mont Forte Del Cid course, of winning the overall Grand Prix, unfortunately Williams enjoying a slender one point advantage found the going a little difficult and finished 8th. A 3 course dinner was followed by the presentation
of prizes down to 8th place for the members, guests and wives. A raffle was also conducted, the proceeds a three figure sum donated to the Poppy Appeal. Captain Simon Williams presented the awards stating it was the Society´s most successful year to date with almost 4,000 euros worth of prizes given throughout the season. Sponsors PJs Rentacars and Graham Jackson were thanked for their continued invaluable support. Grand Prix Results 1st Dave Lethaby 104 pts, 2nd Paul Durrant 99 pts, 3rd Simon Williams 97 pts, 4th Simon Lee 91 pts, 5th John Eyre 89 pts, 6th Colin Wilson 78 pts, 7th Colin Marsden 77 pts, 8th Cam McHardy 76 pts. LA SIESTA GOLF SOCIETY PRESIDENT’S DAY
15 NOVEMBER AT CAMPOAMOR Around thirty players and guests set off at 9.48 on a straightforward stableford competition in brilliant sunshine with which we were blessed all day. The course was in good condition apart from one fairway which has just started to look a bit iffy. The front groups started at quite a good pace but inevitably came up against two four ball ‘holidaymaker’ groups. As always though, the delays provided the usual excuse for the odd wayward shots. Speaking of wayward shots, the only incident worth mentioning was Ken Harvey’s attempt to cripple our Captain, George Rawlings, by hitting him on a lower leg. Not so much a ‘wayward’ shot perhaps, rather George was simply just in the way. George, of course, was quite gentlemanly and forgiving. Ken by the way is the only person in our photo above who couldn’t afford a bow tie!!! Mention should be made of the welcome we received from Head Waiter Juan and his staff with drinks and canapés on the door. The menus decided on by Bernie were very good and the food was excellent, served, as always, by the staff in their very efficient and friendly way. The music was also superb and provided by Celena Deans, highly recommended and an X Factor boot camp finalist. A great day all round. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘European Tour FINAL qualifying – PGA CATALUNYA’ Last week I reported on the European Tour 2nd stage qualifying event held at Las Colinas with the successful players joining other qualifiers from different courses to make up a field of 150 players chasing 25 spots for the full European Tour for 2015.There was a rather unique and historic event which took place during the competition when American John Hahn shot a score of 58 but followed this the next day with 78 and failed to qualify as he ultimately finished in 50th place .The winner was Finnish player Mikko Korhonen on -20 closely followed by Argentinian Ricardo Gonzales on -18.Of the qualifiers from Las Colinas ,Richard McEvoy and Chris Paisley both qualified easily but Sam Walker the new course record holder at Las Colinas failed to quality on -3 and finished on a tie for 43rd place. Those that failed to qualify will now have to ply their trade on the Challenge Tour or hope for a sponsors invite to some events where they would hope to win enough money to prevent going through this stressful process next year. There were some former Ryder Cup team members and seasoned tour regulars and winner who failed to gain their full card for 2015 including Philip Price, Ignacio Garrido, Jose Manuel Lara, Peter Hedblom, Peter Lawrie, Philip Archer, Nick Dougherty, Michael Jonzon and Jean Francois Remesy to name a few. Such is the depth of the European tour these days . We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY This week our venue was the slightly watery course at La Serena which still had a few muddy areas after the heavy rain but most of the fairways were in very good condition and the greens were excellent as usual. The weather was overcast and a stiffish breeze got up soon after play began but this did not seem to affect our winner this week John Winkley who carded an excellent 42 points and a substantial cut in his handicap. The runner up showing a welcome return to form was Dave Adams who also carried off the nearest the pin on hole 17 and nearest the par 4 13th in 2 prizes. This left only the nearest the pin on hole 9 which went to Bobby Fagin and the longest drive and nearest the par 5 7th prizes which were both claimed by the Captain Tommy Clarke. Next week we return once again to Alicante Golf meet at the bar at 8am.

With greens in a very good state, fairways reasonable, good scores were expected. However, Alenda does have its difficulties and is prone to bite a player at some stage (or stages!) of their round. Such seems to have been the case for many, with only two players breaking 36 points, and less than half of the members getting above 30. Results by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Paul Cobain (31 on CB), 3rd Ray Ewins (31 on CB), 2nd Richard Cleary (33) and 1st John Sorenson with 35 points. Silver Category: 4th Mike Jordan (31 on CB), 3rd Ron Stenhouse (31 on CB), 2nd Robin Eastman (31 on CB), and 1st Keith Wraithmell with 32 points. Gold Category: 4th Ivor Turkington (33), 3rd Shay Cunningham (34), 2nd Ivan Hanak (37) and 1st , with the best score of the day and a sizeable cut coming up, Richard Wale with an excellent 40 points. The Abacus winner was Wenche Westburg Two best visitor prizes today, with the runner-up being Andy Whitely, the winner Dave Stewart. NTP par 3’s - Shay Cunningham (3), Tony Smale (5), Theo Boelhouwer (13) and Richard Cleary (16). www.smgs.org or Barry Roehrig on 966 731 033.
QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY Last Wednesday the society had the “Christmas Pairs” competition at Roda. Roda was in excellent condition and the weather for midNovember was absolutely glorious with bright blue skies, sunshine and no wind. The competition was keenly contested with some close scores. It was won by the pairing of scouser Roy Kavanagh and his very experienced playing partner young Trevor Hobbs with 39 stableford points. In second place was the pairing of young buck and big hitter Ryan Rogers and his partner Dave Bartram with 37 points who just pipped the pairing of the congenial and very accurate Irishman David McSweeney and his partner Brian Airey, on count-back. The pair who played the most balls and probably let out the most hot air on the golf course were Darryll Wright and David Johnson with 27 points. The 4 nearest the pins were shared by Ryan Rogers and Tony Patterson with 2 apiece. It needed a tape measure to decide the nearest the pin on the 18th hole and after close deliberation Ryan was found to be the closest by a couple of inches from David McSweeney. The final of the society’s annual singles knock-out was also played out between Roy Westlake and John King. It was a very keenly contested affair with the lead switching several times between the two but was eventually won by Roy Westlake 2 and 1. Well done Roy or Woy as they say down south. The day was sponsored by Ronnie Spiers. The next game is at Las Colinas on Wednesday 3 December. Membership secretary Les Pancott on 966 71 6723.

FERRAN NETS ONLY GOAL AS TORRY CLOSE GAP CD TORREVIEJA .............1 PATERNA CF ...................0 Due to essential restoration on the Vicente Garcia pitch (necessary to keep it in tip top condition), Torry played the first of a few home matches at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. They were looking to bounce back from 2 heavy reversals on the road, but their opponents Paterna have had a very impressive away record of 4 victories and 2 draws, from 7 games played this season. However, despite not having won so far in November, picking up just a single point from 3 matches, Torry were still only 5 points from top spot going into this div 3 encounter. And it was Ferran who closed the gap to a couple as he got the only goal of the game against Paterna on Sunday evening. With both Rafa Gomez and Martin out injured, and neither defender Cristian Sanchez nor striker Steve Ekedi making the starting line up, Galiana confused more than a few with his team selection and when Paterna shaved the post with an early header it certainly looked ominous for the home sides chances but as Torry grew into the game the opportunities started coming. It was not the free flowing football that we hoped we might see on a perfect Astroturf surface but the all important aspect of the visit from Paterna was to get points on the board and close the gap with the playoff places and after the early scare the home side went about the task by allowing the visitors little room On the quarter hour mark an excellent combination between Borja and Cesar saw the former Elche man just head over. Torry were beginning to get on top and the signs were looking good. They were restricting Paterna to occasional raids and with the majority of the ball we were
CARP-R-USNEWS This week the Club should have fished the Pantano de Beniarres, for the one off match for the Autumn Cup. But as the weather forecast was for rain all day in this area, which would have made access very difficult, it was decided to move the match to the Eden canal in Guardamar. The winner on the day was Derek King using the feeder, so he wins the Clubs Autumn Challenge cup- well done. In second place was Steve Fell with Ann Fowles in third place and Ian Air in fourth. The match on 27th November will be at Nancys- pegs at 7.00, fish 8.00 till 1.00. The following week, 4th December we will be back on the Eden Canal. all hoping that elusive goal might come. And it did midway through the half, following a decisive move Ferran hit a low shot in a crowded area. The ball took a wicked deflection and looped over the keeper before quickly dropping just under the bar and into the back of the net. We had to look to the referee for confirmation, with many thinking the ball had cleared the bar, but they all count, and the home side took a deserved lead after their earlier decent build up. Unfortunately as the Torry pattern began to develop it was quickly disrupted with full back Berna making way for Ruben after being the subject of a nasty foul but with few further opportunities the sides went into the interval with the home side holding a narrow advantage. There was little to cheer in the second period with most of the entertainment emanating from the stand where manager Galiana was serving the 2nd of a 3 match suspension. As Torry continued to retain possession the keepers were only occasionally troubled. Torry should have extended their lead following an Adrian corner on 68 mins. All it needed was a toe as the ball sped through a crowded area but none was forthcoming. A 40 yard drive from Oscar went close in added time and as Paternat then broke to mount a rare incursion into the Torry half it needed an excellent save from Oscar to keep all three points at home. Final score CD Torrevieja 1 Paterna CF 0. Next weekend’s game against Alicante based side Jove Espanol is being played on Saturday evening kicking off at 6pm. Keep an eye on the club website for further details.
LA ZENIA GOLF SOCIETY AT EL VALLE By Eric Lucas A good turn out of members and guests on Thursday as we played our weekly game at El Valle. A cloudy day and light wind made the ball difficult to see and occasionally go off course well mine did. A lot of work going on around the course, fairways and bunkers was the main work being carried out which was making the course look in good condition. One singles match play championship game was played, Chris Blown returning for his holiday in Mexico showed no sign of tiredness after his flight and won his match against Mike Sephton. Please note that all first round games must be played by the 30th November. Unless there are exceptional circumstances were the committee will make a final decision. Please note that all games to be finished on the day. If all square on the 18th then play on to the First. If still drawn then a coin will be tossed to decide the match winner. TMGS -19TH NOVEMBER 2014
Today we took a short trip south to Roda where we found the course to be in quite good condition but full to the brim with golfers which, naturally, meant a slow round and our last group out just made it to the 18th in what was left of the daylight. Today’s competition was a mixture of Medal Play and Stableford. For the Gold Division it was a mandatory Medal Play competition and the Silver Division members had the option to join the Medal Competition which is a formal best 3 scores from 5 competitions. It was pleasing to see that 3 members from the Silver Division had the gonads to partake in the Medal. The NTP’s bought forth some mirth as it appears that some members have a problem in reading the big notice on the desk and what is on the pin marker. On the subject of members unable to read the notice on the desk, I actually witnessed one Gold Division member who shall remain nameless but then again, naming and shaming is so much fun, so Paul Fairclough actually annotated his card just which ones he could score on. Despite this, he still put his moniker on an NTP that belonged to the Silver Group. With all the wrong names being entered, only two of the four NTP’s were claimed and one was by Paul “Lennie” Fairclough and Steve Higgins. There was more mirth when the results were read out for the Silver Division and who would have expected 22 points to take 3rd place? Certainly not Colin Marsden who came 3rd with that score as was Fred Parkinson who also scored 22 points but had a better back nine and took 2nd place. This left the Belfast Bandit – Ernie Wilson – to take top spot with 27 points. It’s a good job it was dark outside; the red faces of the recipients were hidden. The Gold Division lads scored much better and it needed a 3 over par 75 for Joe Dean to take 3rd spot. In second place was Paul Fairclough with a net 74 and way out in front and obviously, this being the first of five, leading the table was Bill (On the podium once again, and with another cut looming) Starkey with a very nice 4 under net 68. The Best Guest prizes were won by G Handeland with 31 points to take 2nd slot and the winner on 33 points was H.
