ZONE NE RECO RECOVERY VERY ZO ORIHUELA ELA COST COSTA A ORIHU
Last week saw the inauguration of part of the green corridor of the Orihuela Costa, the “Corredor Verde de la Costa”, which saw a new green area opened in the Valencia urbanisation near Villamartin, thereby providing a new environmental element to the residential zones. The creation of the Corredor Verde de la Costa, which covers six different zones in the area, has been overseen by the Councillor for work and employment, Manuel Gallud, and the Councillor for the
Coast, Martina Scheurer, who are coincidentally both representatives of the Los Verdes green party of Orihuela. A temporary contract for employment was given to 33 residents of the municipality, which not only secured their employment for the duration of the term, but also served as an apprenticeship where they learnt new skills to help them develop and hopefully obtain permanent work in the sectors for which they are now trained. During this week´s presentation, the supervising trainer, María Ángeles Palencia, explained how this existing park had been adapted by the workforce. Continued on Page 2

It now includes a bike path that traverses its way through the green area, complete with bicycle parking, picnic tables, benches, pergolas and dustbins, all made from wood, much of which is recycled, and stained to match the natural vegetation. Manuel Gallud expressed his satisfaction at the work, and the dedication that the workers and the management have shown in creating these workable spaces on the Orihuela Costa, and how he hopes that similar projects will continue. The councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, praised the work carried out so far, recalling how the Orihuela Costa has 38 kilometres of parkland like this, a lot of which had been left to rundown and not usable by the residents, serving as nothing more than an eyesore in a number of
Monday, 1st December, 2014 places, where non-native, invasive plants threaten the natural environment. From the turnout of residents of the Valencia urbanisation, it was clear that they too appreciated the efforts of all involved. A number of community representatives and presidents expressed their delight to The Leader. Sue Robinson said that she was “very pleased” and thought the park was “wonderful”, before explaining how she hopes the neighbourhood will be able to come together and use the area, whilst planting more flowers and trees. Tony Cross said that he thought the park was “excellent”, whilst commenting on how hard everybody had worked to make the park what it is. Alan Aldcroft, praised the scheme and the workers, and how it “gives people a purpose”
and a reason for those who were struggling to din work with “a reason to get out of bed”, whilst learning new skills. Alan also explained how the newly refreshed central park area gave the urbanisation more of a “village feel”, a sentiment echoed by the gathering crowds sipping bubbly under the shade of the natural flora, whilst able to relax on the newly built furniture and enjoy the passing of another day in their idyllic surroundings, as a squirrel ran along, climbing through the trees, gathering food in testament to how the park has already fitted in with nature. The next park of the six-part green corridor will be officially inaugurated on Thursday the 4th of December, near to Calle Rocio at La Zenia, in an area where 800 metres of green land has already been recovered as part of the scheme.

ORIHUELA PROPERTY TAX CLAIMS WORTH MILLIONS Zapata says there are up to 1200 swimming pools yet to be taxed, most of them situated on the coast.
he acting Mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata, who also holds the competencies within the town planning department, has announced that his department has already identified around 7,700 properties in the municipality that have undergone some form of reform and extension and are therefore liable to an increase in the IBI property tax. Having been largely left unchecked for decades, the revision to the amount that the property owners are liable for is valued in the region of a million euro annually, a substantial contribution to the accounts. However, with many of the properties identified having been reformed for a period longer than the allowed time that back payment can be claimed, those owners will benefit from not having to pay the tax they should have been contributing for the past ten or twenty years, those properties identified will now be sent a bill to cover the difference in the amount outstanding for the last 4 years, which will also provide a boost to the economy. Having employed the services of aerial photography
T
company GeoNet, the council has now forwarded the information to their contracted property tax collection company, SUMA, to make the necessary claims. In a statement, Zapata explained how the company identified numerous elements of construction and extension, not all of which were on residential buildings. The data does reveal some 1,600 buildings which do not match the declared use for which they were built, there are 1,700 buildings over 100 years old which have been converted into residential properties but not registered. There are around 2,000 buildings with additional elements constructed, such as extension, and between 1,100 and 1,200 swimming pools which are not declared. In addition to the latest findings, Zapata also pointed out how a team of six inspectors have been visiting locations in the area to clarify the data and ask for voluntary payment of the outstanding taxes, already generating over 800,000 euro in additional revenue so far.

Guardamar has launched the tender process for the supply of two new municipal waste collection and street cleaning vehicles to improve the current council fleet. The maximum budget for the supply of the two compactor trucks is 393,000 euros. WASTE DEPOT TO BE BUILT IN LOMAS DE CABO ROIG
Residents of Lomas de Cabo Roig on the Orihuela Costa may soon find their worst nightmares realised, after plans were submitted and approved for their urbanisation to house the recycling ecopark and a garage for all the waste disposal trucks that serve the coastal zone. The urbanisation has long been the source of complaints as a plot of land owned by the town hall and designated for equipment use has been the drop off and sorting location for the green waste collected on the Orihuela Costa. In the monthly plenary meeting this week, a motion was tabled by the CLr political group, headed up by Pedro Mancebo, which received the support of the opposition Partido Popular, with the government of the PSOE and Los Verdes voting against the move, as did Bob Houliston from the CLARO political party. With their majority in the town hall, the motion was approved by the CLr and PP votes, which could see the
construction of a purpose built garage where repairs and maintenance can be carried out on the cleaning vehicles, and would house all of the garbage trucks when not in service. The site would also become the ecopark, where such items as fridges, washing machines, furniture and other large items are separated into their recyclable components and sorted. The ecopark will not only take the waste collected by the town hall, but will also be a drop off point for residents to take their rubbish to on a regular basis. From the government´s point of view, the Councillor for the Costa, Martina Scheurer, explained that “nobody is against the construction of the ecopark, nor is anybody against the construction of a building for the waste disposal workers to use as a permanent base. In fact, the ecopark project is ready to be started once the money is released and a suitable location is found”. Scheurer continued, “Both the Los Verdes, PSOE and Bob

The move to build the depot was supported in plenary by the PP and the CLr whilst the PSOE, Los Verdes and CLARO voted against
CORRUPTION MOTION BYPASSED As reported last week, Asuncion Mayoral, ostracised member of the CLr political group and unassigned councillor of Orihuela, tabled a motion in the plenary meeting that aimed to obtain an agreement that any politician accused in corruption cases would not stand for election. In the plenary meeting of the municipal board this week, the moved was tabled as expected, but faced an amendment put forward by the PP and CLr, effectively dismissing the original proposal. The amended nation was that rather than the politicians take responsibility for their own activities and agree not to stand in the event of being accused in a case relating to what could be perceived as corruption in public office, the change was to petition the government to change the law so as to prevent such an occurrence in the future. The government of the PSOE and Los Verdes, along with the
two unassigned councillors, agreed that this new move is a positive one and can be approved, although the reality being that if the notion were to be taken up by government, it would be some time way in the future, but it can exist along with the original notion whereas the councillors themselves make the commitment to the public of their disagreement with corruption, in so much as they would not stand in the next elections. A discussion continued with neither side backing down and the proposed commitment by the individual councillors to not stand was soon distracted from on account of the revision, and thus the PSOE and Los Verdes objected to the revised notion, that was approved with the majority of the PP and CLr combined. As such, Orihuela will not be joining other municipalities who have approved anti-corruption measures at their own level, deferring the decision to a higher body that can only take place, if ever, way beyond the elections in May.
Houliston would have approved the motion, if Pedro Mancebo would have amended it to remove that specific location. We are currently investigating the best site to put the ecopark, which is a difficult decision to make as there are only a certain number of plots on which it can be built, but we don´t believe that the site at Lomas de Cabo Roig is the right one, but Pedro Mancebo would not amend his motion, so we had to object”. As part of the original development plans for residential urbanisations, builders had to dedicate a plot of land for various purposes, including equipment us. These plots were then handed over to the town hall for their use, once the site had been opened. These plots are littered around the entire Orihuela Costa, as is the case for most other areas, but the town hall say that they are assessing which of these plots could have the least impact on residents, in view of the items to be sorted there and the heavy industrial traffic it will generate. Currently, the domestic waste disposal trucks are on one of these plots, but there are no suitable facilities for the workers. Mancebo claimed that the reason Scheurer was against that particular plot of land was as a “favour” to a builder, with Scheurer denying that is the case, claiming she is certainly not aware of any such agreement, but is aware of the countless complaints filed by residents over the current operation at the site. Similarly, although the council may not be aware of any deals, the potential buyers of the near 200,000 euro properties being built that currently overlook the location may well not be pleased either, although their complaints might well be unjustified as the land is designated for that purpose, a fact that can be checked with the town hall by any purchaser of a new home, rather than relying on the promises of some sellers that the land would never be built on, which is an allegation made by some residents.

Spain has topped the ranks in terms of the best yield of courgettes and squash, according to data from the United Nations. However, the data revealed this week refers to the year 2012, when 502.6 million kilos were produced on some 10,000 hectares of land, giving Spain 5.03 kilos per square metre yield. Globally, a total of 24,568.1 million kilos of courgette and squash were produced, with a worldwide average yield of 1.37 kilos per square metre. In terms of the total produced, Spain is in tenth place, with China, India and Russia leading the scale respectively.

POOR CONDITIONS FOR TORREVIEJA GUARDIA The Asociación Unificada de Guardias Civiles have denounced the conditions in which Guardia Civil officers have to work in the barracks in Torrevieja, described as “one of the worst” under the command of the Alicante province, on account of the “discomfort” the officers have to endure due to the “poor working conditions”. Not unlike how the local police have been reported to have been operating, there is an apparent chain of command beyond the normal ranking system, with a group of officers relegated within the working groups and constantly having their roles undermined, with duty allocation left to the shift manager who assigns them the most menial tasks possible, whilst the officers outside the so called inferior “grupos escombro” are treated favourably in their assignations. The AUGC say that there is a “lot of discrimination” between guards of the same scale and rank, something they consider unfair and that affects many of them personally, as they don´t feel valued or reciprocated. The Torrevieja barracks is seen as onr of the most important in the country, where 200 officers operate from a building constructed in the nineties, although the reception and cell block were renewed recently.
CALL FOR EARLIER POLICE RETIREMENT The spokesman for the municipal group Los Verdes, José Manuel Dolon, criticised the Torrevieja Council last week for "copying" the motion originally filed by his party in 2008, requesting advancement of the retirement ages for members of the Policia Locale, but he nevertheless welcomed the proposal. Dolon said that although the Partido Popular have been dragging their feet for many years his party 'welcomes their change of their position" He said that the retirement age should be advanced because officers, like everyone else, gradually suffer a loss in their physical abilities as they get older. He said that the Policia Locale carry out many of the same functions as other members of the State Security Forces so his proposal had been nothing more than bringing the retirement age into parity with them.

PRISON ASSOCIATION DENOUNCE SINGER’S SPECIAL TREATMENT
An association representing prison officers in Spain has denounced the preferential treatment given to singer Isabel Pantoja, incarcerated last week for tax fraud. The group claim that the head of the prison service has given “pretend advantage” to the singer, after the prison was ordered to prepare a special cell for her, with polished tiles, a new mattress and “extraordinarily” clean. In a statement, the groups say that should these facts be confirmed, “there is no other option than for the dismissal of the Director of the prison, María Isabel Cabello, and the opening of disciplinary proceedings”. The association also claim that a memo was sent to the officers on the 19th of November from the centre´s director, reminding them of their obligations, something they consider unnecessary given their “experience and professionalism”. They argue that people enter the prison every day and none of those have had cause for such a memo to be sent, which they say show how the directorate “lack professionalism” in dealing with the imprisonment of a celebrity such as Pantoja, even before entering the prison, “different to how they deal with the rest of the prison population”. Given this, the association have expressed their “revulsion” the prison administration has placed on
the staff of this prison, whilst leaking confidential information and thus breaking the law on data protection. It is not the first time that the prison system has been accused of preferential treatment to certain prisoners. Four months into his sentence having been found guilty of corruption, the former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, still enjoys the benefits of a different life in jail to other prisoners. He is accommodated in a nursing wing, in a larger than normal cell which he shares with two “model” prisoners, where he can attend the gym, play sports, walks every day, receives his daily mail and attends mass on a Sunday to pray. Pantoja was shrouded in controversy when she appeared in concert in Torrevieja during the summer of 2012, at a cost to the tax payer of 35,000 euro, although the local socialists claim the figure was nearer 50,000 to 55,000 euro. At the time, the city council justified the expense as it allowed the citizens of Torrevieja to attend the concert at a lower ticket cost, although only 2,000 people were said to have attended according to the official figures from the town hall, but the promoter, Horizonte Musical, claimed this figure was hugely exaggerated and that only 1,374 tickets were sold, and that they made a huge loss on the event.

LEADER LA LIGA PLAYERS STEP IN TO PAY PENSIONERS RENT ADVERTISING HOTLINE
Players and staff of Madrid’s third La Liga Football Club Rayo Vallecano have stepped in to cover the living costs of 85 year old Carmen Martínez Ayuso who was evicted from her house in the Madrid neighborhood of Vallecas last Friday.
When hearing of her situation coach Paco Jémez said “We are not going to sit by and do nothing, we are going to help this woman.” They have now committed the club to paying her rent for the rest of her life. Martínez Ayuso was evicted from her property, which is valued at €160,000, after her son, used it to guarantee a €40,000 private loan he took out last year. The family explains the son had borrowed the money to redecorate the house and sort out financial problems following his divorce and the loss of his job as a real estate agent. He inherited the deeds to the house after the death of his father seven years ago. Martínez Ayuso, who is not able to read or write, didn’t know that she was facing eviction until the police visited the property a few days before the first attempt to throw her out was made last month, but now the football club have stepped in they have promised to find her another home ‘so she can live the rest of her life with dignity and not feel alone.’ However the pensioner says she has “no tears left after she spent them all saying farewell to a half-century of memories in her home.’ “I’ve spent my whole life working, getting up at 6am to earn a crust, just so at the last minute they come and take it all when the only thing I want is peace,” she says, clutching her walking stick. But now her grandson Luismi is in charge of looking for an apartment that Rayo Vallecano can pay for. On Monday Madrid Mayor Ana Botella said City Hall would offer her access to social housing, though municipal social services also stated that the family had previously rejected its offer of help, saying that with the help of Vallecas Mortgage Victims Platform (PAH), they were going to try to stop the eviction.
HOT DOGS - GREYHOUNDS TARGETED IN ANIMAL THEFTS
An Animal Charity is warning pet owners of a series of thefts or kidnaps, aimed particularly at Greyhounds, as unscrupulous criminals snatch dogs that they then sell on to aficionados at the start of the hunting season. In recent weeks, they say there have been several attempts to steal such dogs, particularly in the streets of Alicante. ‘Alicante Adopts’ is an association dedicated to the shelter of such animals and they say they have firm evidence of a number of such attempts, the most recent in the beach area of El Campello where dogs are regularly walked and bathed dogs. The incident occurred last week when a young woman walking with her greyhound was surprised by two men who tried to snatch it. Although she was cornered she screamed for help and the thieves sped off in a white van
with a Murcia registration mark. The woman said that there was already at least one other greyhound in the van. Just last month Janis was also approached in the Alicante neighborhood of San Blas, by two men who also attempted to snatch her greyhound, but the attackers withdrew as the girl ran into an area where there was more traffic and pedestrians. These are just two cases, but the Civil Guard has also recently warned of the existence of organized networks which are engaged in the theft of greyhounds in different parts of Spain. Although more common in the rural areas of Andalusia and La Mancha, such attempts to kidnap the dogs are now regularly being seen in Alicante province of. The kidnapped greyhounds are usually destined for racing hunting where the best specimens can reach prices of 1,000 euros.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
BOYS’ TOYS I like toys as much as the next man. Be it train sets, steam cars, remote control helicopters, iPhones or Nintendo. Other, sometimes questionable, gadgets have also come onto the market in recent years, including devices for treasure hunting on the beach and public areas. I received an email from an American gentleman last week who said that he had been so inspired by ‘Letters from the Atlantic’ that he wanted to move to the Canary Islands. He had but one question to ask before he made his move. He asked whether or not he would be allowed to use his metal detector on the beaches of the islands. These gadgets are, of course, frowned upon by many who regard them as merely looting the coins and jewellery of unfortunate souls who have lost them during a day out on the beach. Others will say that these treasure seekers have the potential to unearth historical artefacts from the past, although whether this is for the public good, or for personal gain, is an on going debate. I replied that I thought that he should investigate whether or not he is able to gain residency to the country before he worries too much about treasure hunting. Somehow, I think his priorities were a little distorted. As for current gadgets, I have been a little surprised at the
sudden interest in personal drones. For the uninitiated, drones are a kind of upgraded remote control helicopter that hovers wherever the operator directs it, with many sporting a camera that happily takes photos or even videos of the world below. It is supposed to be a hi-tech toy, but it does take remote surveillance to an entirely new level. My first encounter with a real life drone was one hovering over the outdoor swimming pool in our village. At first I was fascinated to watch this amazing piece of technology hovering just a few metres from where locals and myself were swimming and sunbathing. However, the more I thought about it the more I realised that the unintended consequences of this tiny flying machine could be very serious, particularly if carrying a camera on board. Hovering over public swimming pools and beaches taking photographs and videos could be seen as a pornographers’ paradise, and when involving children is potentially much more serious. Then there is home security. Is your terrace or garden shielded from prying eyes? Clearly a hovering drone could easily become a public nuisance with its irritating buzzing and intrusive nature. As I said earlier, I adore new
MAS TROUBLE FOR CATALONIA In a move that was widely expected Spain’s Attorney General Eduardo Torres-Dulce has filed formal charges against Catalonia leader Artur Mas in connection with the November 9 non-binding vote on self-rule for the region held in violation of a court injunction. Mas is accused of disobedience, breach of public duties, misuse of public money and usurpation of powers. Prosecutors are also said to be levying the same charges against Mas’s deputy, Joana Ortega, and regional education commissioner Irene Rigau

technology of all kinds, but I am also a great shot with a catapult, a widely unrecognised skill of mine that I picked up during many boring lunch hours when I was at school. Let me be quite clear, should I spot a drone hovering over my garden it will suddenly find itself shot down into oblivion. After all, wherever in the world we may live, an expat Englishman’s home is his castle. During his first appearance at the Open Meeting organized by the PSOE in Burgos, the secretary general of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, said that the electoral program for the socialist group will include a prohibition of tax amnesties, as well as an assurance that corrupt politicians will not only go to prison but will be forced to return what they have stolen. The PSOE will also repeal the current labour reform legislation and create a “citizen´s contract” to end “fiscal injustice”.

BREAKFAST-ART CLUBS GROWING IN TORREVIEJA The enclosure of the Eras de la Sal on Sunday welcomed more than fifty people who gathered together to observe the new 'Breakfast-Art' Club, an activity in which several local groups share their experiences as they each prepare traditional crafts and established gourmet dishes. The idea is to promote relationships and enjoy a morning together with like-minded individuals. They were joined by Agustina Esteve, the Councillor for Citizen Participation, who said how important such breakfasts were allowing individuals to recall and share anecdotes and incidents as the morning’s activities are pursued. She also said that a summary of each day will be recorded along with photographs depicting some of the exhibits and dishes which would then form the
basis of a public exhibition in Torrevieja during the course of next year. In short, Breakfast-Art allows participants to develop existing social relations amongst themselves (national, international, young and old), in an atmosphere of fellowship, sharing cultures and places of interest. The activity already takes place in la Plaza de Oriente, in el Parque Martha Luisa de Noruega (Urbanización La Siesta), and the Water Mill (Molino del Agua) in La Mata.

14% OF DRIVERS ADMIT TO NOT MILLIONS INVESTED IN MORE RADAR RESTRAINING CHILDREN IN CARS DETECTORS
A report by the Fundación Línea Directa, the details of which have been released this week by the DGT traffic department, reveals that 14% of all drivers on Spanish roads admit to not securing their children in the car, and 5 million motorists themselves still don´t wear a seatbelt. The findings of the report have been taken from a survey of 1,200 interviews with drivers across the Spanish geography, who were asked about irresponsible behaviour on the roads. The top three offending actions were revealed to be speeding, not stopping every two hours on long journeys and using a mobile phone while driving.
In fact, nearly 15 million road users in Spain confess to driving over the speed limit, a factor that was present in 22% of fatal accidents last year. Furthermore, although tiredness and fatigue are related to 30% of accidents, 44% of drivers admit not stopping every two hours to rest on long trips. Regarding the mobile phone use, some 7 million drivers admit to using their mobile phone whilst driving. In addition, nearly 5 million drivers state that they don´t wear a seatbelt on short journeys, and 14% carry children in the vehicles without mandatory security measures, despite the startling figure that 20% of children who died on the roads in 2013 was not using child restraints. The correct distance from the car in front is not maintained by 5 million drivers, 21% of the respondents claiming to drive too close. In 2013, driving too close to the car in front was a factor in 2,135 collisions, an increase of 8% over the previous year. Rear and multiple collisions caused more than 150 deaths on Spanish road last year. Over 6.5 million drivers expressed a lack of training and lack of knowledge of the basic rules of the roads, such as 35% not knowing about parking restrictions and almost 14% not knowing who has priority when exiting a roundabout. In terms of emergency responses, almost half of the drivers do not know how to deal with a skid of the front of the vehicle, and 27% would not know how to react to aquaplaning. Of course we have to bear in mind that these statistics could well be slightly misleading, on account on their reliance to the drivers actually admitting they are at fault.
Spain´s DGT traffic department has had its cheque book out again in November, spending 2.6 million euro on new radar speed detectors. The company Saima Seguridad SA has been awarded a contract worth 1,645,500 euro, to provide 30 new roadside radar speed detectors. The Autovelox 105 model, valued at 54,580 euro each, is capable of measuring the speed of vehicles, as well as the distance between vehicles, as well as the length and width, and can monitor cars and trucks from independent databases. The Autovelox 105 is one of the easiest devices to carry and set up and can operate from vehicles, the side of the road, or mounted on street fixtures. They can also be installed in permanent casings. In addition, the company Etel 88 SA has been awarded a 995,000 euro contract for the provision of another two airborne Pegasus radar detectors for the DGT´s helicopters, which will bring the total flying eyes to seven.

FITNESS EXPER TS SHOW SOLIDARITY WITH A DEIM
Dozens of people spent last Sunday morning out in the fresh air contributing to an extremely worthwhile cause. They were providing their assistance and support to the ADIEM Vega Baja (Association for the Protection and Integration of People with Mental Illness) who were organising sports and fitness activities on the Paseo Vista Alegre for a large number of their members. Most of the sessions took the form of fitness classes with instructors from many of the
town’s gymnasiums and fitness centres as members of the public each contributed 5 euros toward ADIEM funds. The numbers were also increased by over 80 spectators who joined in with the classes as they were passing by. The session began with one of the more popular dance routines, the zumba, followed by 'SH'BAM' , 'Body Combat' and 'Forward 62', four fitness disci-
plines, each requiring participants to be increasingly proficient. Those instructors who provided their assistance at the session came from the O2 Arena Alicante, Sport. In, Marajal Sport, Selfa's Center, Maxx Gym and Club Nautico de Torrevieja Real gyms, which also attracted many of its regular users.

A BUMPER LOCAL CHRISTMAS FOR US ALL ON THE COSTA BLANCA As the Christmas holiday season is about to get fully underway, we return with our pick of the best things to do locally, around Torrevieja, Orihuela and the local area. We start with a couple of Spanish holidays this weekend, as Saturday the 6th of December is Día de la Constitución, or Constitution Day, marking the anniversary of a referendum held on this date in 1978, on which a new constitution was approved. Some 88% of the population voted in favour of a democracy in the referendum, thus ending the era of dictatorship. Two days later, Monday the 8th of December, we have the religious celebration of the Immaculate Conception, celebrating the solemn belief in the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a global celebration believed to have begun in Syria as early as the 5th century, translating its way into the Western church in the 8th century. Both of those dates are classed as National Holidays in Spain, and so many businesses will be closed, although a more liberal freedom expressed largely through the retail sector does mean that the strict traditions of work are no longer recognised as keenly as they once were. On the cultural front, EL PECIO BOU FERRER is an exhibition that opens in Orihuela on the 4th of December, where it runs through to the 8th of January, displaying artefacts from the Bou Ferrer, the largest Roman ship being excavated in the Mediterranean. The original findings from the site were reported in 1999, and so protection was immediately afforded due to the historic significance of the site. The ship was carrying 3,000 amphorae
called “Dressel 7-11”, manufactured in Cádiz, each said to be containing fish sauce, and an accompanying cargo of lead ingots from the mines of Sierra Morena. The ship and her cargo have been featured by the National Geographic and the event is a considerable exhibition for Orihuela, where it will be held in the Maria Moliner public library. For the children, this week in Torrevieja there is the presentation and parade of giants with big heads, and a dreamlike show of musical magic on Tuesday, the “Dreams, Un Mundo Mágico” show in the municipal theatre. Favourite to many a young person, Peppa Pig is appearing live in Alicante between the 5th and the 7th of December, accompanied by some of her friends of course, and her brother George. Pinocchio is also appearing locally this week, at the Teatro Circo in Orihuela, with a dazzling performance on an incredible staged performance of the traditional novel, described as a fantasy story explained with a current, new and amazing scenic language, where dance coexists with technology, creating a magical universe that immerses the viewer in this heart-warming story. The Christmas lights on the Orihuela Costa will be switched on at 6pm on Friday the 5th of December, outside the coastal town hall. With numerous local children joining the Civil Centre choir for their guitar accompanied carol sing-a-long, as the Orihuela Costa festivities began, it is set to start the season off in a melodic and festive manner. The city of Orihuela then has its lights turned on during the same evening, although at around 8pm, to allows
It will be the 12th appearance of the Phoenix Band at Carols in the Square
the coastal people to attend both. Torrevieja´s famous Belén nativity display is officially opened on Saturday the 6th, at 8pm. There are also a number of local favourites putting on a show for Christmas this year. The ever popular Rascals are performing numbers from Barnham this year, with their blend of comedy sketches and dances in what is promised to be a colourful show. They are at the School of Culture & Music, Los Montesinos, on Thursday the 4th of December, and then Torrevieja´s Virgen del Carmen centre on Sunday the 14th. The Torrevieja Association of Balladeer Singers, T.A.A.B.S., are holding their Christmas Show at the Asturias restaurant Punta Prima on Friday the 5th of December. Tickets are free but allocated on a first
come, first served bases from the restaurant. The Phoenix concert band are performing a number of Carol Services starting on the 4th of December at Los Balcones Church, followed by Spiritual Carol Service at Benijófar on the 9th, then at the Torrevieja Christian Fellowship Church on the 10th before performing at the popular Carols in the Square in Torrevieja on Friday the 12th, before visiting the Casa Ventura, San Luis straight after to play carols for the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion. We will keep you updated with our pick of the best local events right here in The Leader newspaper, but we should remind you that because of the holiday on Monday the 8th, The Leader will be out on Tuesday the 9th next week.

ROJALES PANTOMIME GROUP - CINDERELLA
The Rojales Pantomime group will be performing their version of Cinderella at The Music School in Los Montesinos January 8th 9th & 10th 2015 and they guarantee you plenty of laughs with The Ugly sisters Bianca & Sonja played by Lynden B and Andy Jones. Ant and Dec are there as well so get ready to “Rumble” also a bit of ‘Gangnam’ style for the kids to join in. Baron Hardup is hopelessly besotted with his Wife Devilia (Mandy Bartlam) (a force not to be reckoned with) as you will see as the performance progresses. Then there are the usual characters of Cinders, Buttons, Dandini and of coarse Prince Charming. The usual scary scenes with spiders and moving trees to make those on set
nervous but no ghosts in this one. Due to work and school commitments the group only do one show a year and that is Pantomime. This will be their 7th production since the formation of the group. Our aim is to help the needy people of Los Montesinos and Rojales so most of the proceeds go to ‘Caritas’ with some help given to local Animal Rescue centres and a small amount to help buy new instruments for the music school. Tickets can be purchased from various outlets including the Christmas Shop San Luis. Tickets are 7 euros for Adults& 5 for children. Take a look at the website http://www.rojalespantomime.com for more info.

Week 12 on the 24th November and four 7-2 results look good and leaves the top 6 still in the same position even though the top team of Dorothy’s Magpies lost their way only for the 2nd time and this time away to Brian’s Galea “B” who had 2 pairs with 2 wins while for the Magpies Dorothy & Don also had 2 but that renowned quiet pair of Martin & John could only manage 1. Also with only 2 losses, Ron’s Nacho Voles pulled level with a 7-2 win away to Mick’s Lo Crispin who had the 2 John’s winning nothing while Norman & Ken maximised on 3 for the Voles. Still hanging on to 3rd spot are Ayliff’s Galea “A” who popped in to vie with Jim’s Sharks at the Bowls Club and eased a close win having 2 pairs with 2 wins each while for the Sharks Jim & Peter were best with 3 wins. Brian’s Jaguars consolidated their 4th spot with one of those 7-2 wins away to Les’s Jays whose pair of Dave & Les W were the only no scorers while for the Jaguars 2 pairs scored maximum 3 wins each

TMGS AT VILLAMARTIN - 26 November Rain fell during the night before 36 golfers descended upon the oldest course in this area, Villamartin and gladly, the sun shone all day. Today was our second Eclectic Competition and many have, without doubt, improved their scores and 3 will receive a handicap cut for their efforts. The NTP’s were donated by the Vice Captain John Eyre and were claimed by Nick Spicer, Colin Marsden, Ken Persson and Ole Rong. There were two lucky lads of rotund stature that took the “Two’s Pot” of 37.50 each, namely Nick Spicer and Vernon Brown. Both enjoyed that it was a roll over from the previous week. The Silver Mob scored fairly well and there were a few count-backs, but 4th spot went to Ian Parkinson with 34 points, 3rd place and losing on count-back was Alex Goslan whose 35 points was the same as Roger Nilsson, but Roger did him on the back 9. The top dog in the Silver Division was Ole Rong with 39 points. The Gold boys didn’t fare much better as it only needed Paul Fairclough to score 35 points to take 4th place. 36 points saw Dave Lethaby take 3rd spot and a pair of 38’s (I can see the pervs thinking right now) saw Alan Rickers losing out to Mick Kennedy on the count-back. 180´s: Peter Ayres x 2 (Porter House), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov (Meerkats), Mike Smith (Breakaways) Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Matt Cummins (Pint Depot Kings) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) Breakaways Bears remain unbeaten and top Division 2 despite Sporting Life pushing the table toppers all the way. It looked comfortable for the Bears at half time, a 4-2 advantage normally enough to secure a win with 6 singles to play. Mike Douglas 100,119, Ivan Jones 85,2x100 and Mike Smith 100 did the damage for the Bears ensuring their half time lead. However, the Misfits more than matched their opponents in the scoring department, Karl Cooper 121,85 plus a double, George Caine 135,100, Sonya Cooper 81,100, John Ashworth 134 and Pete James 100. The Misfits scoring advantage was lost however as winning doubles were elusive to the visitors. The break and some succulent Breakaways grub lifted the Misfits, immediately levelling the scoring through Caine 85,100,D8 and James scoring consistently taking out the 501 on D14 for 4 all. Karl Cooper kept the momentum going with 85,85,124 and D5 to take the lead. Unfortunately for the visitors but fortunately for the Bears, Mike Smith, who has enjoyed tremendous form of late was next. Not quite up to his usual standard but enough to get his side out of trouble he nailed D2 second arrow to level. Another Mike, this one Douglas, figured next and really went for it. A superb leg under the circumstances followed, 81,85,121 and finally D20 gave the Bears a crucial lead with one leg to play. Enter superwoman, the larger than life Sonya Cooper to rescue the match for the Sporting Life. A super leg culminating on D8 after a 121 to set up the finish completed the match, a draw and a point for both sides. The result keeps the Bears 3 points ahead of their rivals who this week are the Jaguars who move above the Tavern who this week succumbed to the Junction side. The Jaguars are finding some form now, this week was their fifth victory on the bounce, a fine record. They didn’t get off to the best of starts however, as the Tavern Drivers themselves raced to a 2-0 lead
Breakaway Bears and Sporting Life Misfits prior to Thursday’s match via Stu Mitchell taking the first triples and Justin Hepburn finding S19,D16 in two for the second, John Dursley contributing a ton. Hepburn led the way in the third with some great scoring, but the Jaguars of Simone de Lacy, Tracy Simpson and Hilda Wilkinson were their opponents equal, the latter finishing the 701 on D16. Mitchell and Hepburn 97,133 were too strong in the first doubles for the Jaguars, as Hepburn took out his second leg of the night on D20. Pat Schofield pulled one back for the hosts on D3, followed by Simpson and de Lacy D2 to level the score at the break. Hepburn was placed first in the singles, expecting the Drivers to resume their lead, but it didn’t happen that way. Wendy Hayward took the honours on D5, for the Jaguars to lead for the first time. Lisa Ivill was next and thought she had won the leg when completing an excellent “Shanghai” on the 13 bed. Her opponent John Dursley reminded her it was a 501 game and showed her the way with 95,80,100 and D6. Wilkinson regained the lead for the hosts to allow Schofield to ensure the draw with 100 and D10. De Lacy threw a tidy 501 against Ralph Weatherby 95,85 the former matching the scoring and then nailing D8 for the match. Simpson completed the evening with yet another Jaguars leg taking out D2. A fine performance from Evolution´s Jon Peters helped his side to a draw and valuable point. Two tons and D9 posted Peters intentions in the first despite a 111 from Michelle Lane. He was at it again in the third finishing the triple on D4, well supported by Jak Doggatt. Chris Miles and Brett Badlove faced Maggie Nicholls and Peters in the opening doubles, both teams reaching the double. It was however Peters in scintillating out form who planted his third dart in D16. Gilly Kirby and Alan Preston D8 levelled the score at half time. Preston was first choice in the singles and didn’t hang around with 85,85,100 and D2 for the lead. Doggatt´s ton in the next was ignored by Michelle Lane who increased the lead to 2 on D7. Ken Treble reduced the deficit to 5-4 on D4. Some great darts followed from Peters who finished on D16 after a 129 and 140 to take 4 of his side´s 6 legs. An excellent performance! Nicholls concluded the match on D2 to share the spoils. Back to Division 1 and a fine away performance from Junction Jackals gives them their third victory of the season. Kenny Wilkinson´s finish on D18,D16 was the highlight of a first half which left the visitors 2-4 up. Irene Russell took out Andy Gildea for 3-4, followed by Paul Dowington who rapidly defeated Jimmy Gray 2-0 for 4 all. Babs Warren gave Busters the lead for the first time, taking the third leg against Keith King. Steph Simpson needed only two legs to defeat Ray Harvey, the score nicely poised at 5 all. Peter O´Rourke couldn’t quite find his usual form playing Wilkinson who took straight legs for the win and at least a draw. Julie Hallett did her best to retrieve a point for Busters taking one of three in a nail biter with Phil de Lacy who ensured both points for the travelling Jackals. Gildea recorded 100,121,132, Wilkinson 3 game shots and 119,113, Simpson 3 game
shots, 101,137 for the Jackals. Que Pasa were once again devoid of their main man John Walker who this week learned of his wife breaking her arm in the UK so determining his wife´s needs were far more important than the Eagles Thursday night darts he returned to the UK. Don’t blame him. The Porters took the first two via Sid Cross D4 and Peter Ayres D13 including a 103, Kevin Wood replying with a ton. Wood repeated Ayres effort on D13 to take the third, Stuart Clark helping out with a 105. A Ray Hayes ton in the first pairs enabled Ayres to take his second out of the night, this time on D2. A 135 from Wood set up a D16 out from partner Jim Waddell, opponent Yvonne Rouffignac scoring a ton. Den Hall and Jim Storey 125 were the Eagles final pair to face Brian Nash and Ray Sanderson. The Porters came out on top Nash finishing on D5 for a 4-2 half time score line. Three tons from Nash plus D7 and D3 saw off the challenge from Waddell who took the middle leg on D17 after a 125. Rouffignac got the Porters 6th leg and a point beating an in form opponent in Wood 2-1. It was ¨scores for show¨ as Wood recorded 4x100, his opponent none, but the two doubles required in the best of three D2 and D20, Wood taking it to three. Hall pulled one back for his side hitting 2xD16 in a 3 leg tie against Hayes 100,D2. Sanderson came from one down to Storey D4, utilising D20 twice to take both points for the Porters. Storey recorded a 140, Sanderson a ton. Cross was surprisingly beaten by Joe Cuyt, the Porter finding very few big scores, his opponent the vital doubles D15 and D10. Ayres faced Clark in the 12th, the latter battering the lipstick with 100,120 and 140, but Ayres D5 in the first and then 180,100 plus D20 gave the hosts their 8th leg of the evening.
Pint Depot stars Matt Cummins and Gary Minor Meerkats stay on top of Division 1 after defeating Pint Depot Kings who improved their legs tally against the Kats by 2 this week. This was mainly due to the fine efforts of Matt Cummins who recorded 2x98,85,3x100,180 and 3 game shots. Gary Minor supported well with a comfortable victory over Danas Bobinas nailing D4 and D8 plus 140 and 100. Martin Bynorth was the other leg winner on D15 plus 111. Two decent individual performances from the Kats, plus an all round team effort was just too much for the Kings. Pat Abrams 5x100,106,2x140 plus a nice D8,D8 throwing for D16 and 4x100,106,140 plus 4 game shots from Paul Durrant were the Kats main performers. Paul Durrant, League Chairman.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Monday found The Broncos playing host to The Pioneers from La Siesta, who are always a challenge and great company. Both teams played well, with The Broncos showing well in taking the rinks by 4 to 2 and also taking the overall shots. John Cleal, Geoff Jones and John Skipper 23-6. Edward Elsam, Rob Clark and John Newell 31-7. Barbara Jones, Graham Day and Graham Hicks 6-23. Bob Easthope, Sandra Twentyman and Shirley Edwards 28-11. Marion Haynes, David Haynes and John Donovan 18-12. Tricia Elsam, Tony Robinson and John Featherstone 16-21. You can't beat an away day at Emerald Isle for a "training session" for our novices, in the invitation rinks league on wednesday; a wonderful morning with good company just can't be beaten. Tony Robinson, Keith Cunningham, Geoff Jones and skip Shirley Edwards came second. As Shirley said ‘a bad day at the office for all of four of them’, it happens. Brian Taylor, Irene Thomson, Jim Gracie with skip Eddie Thomson achieved a credible draw against a strong Emerald Isle team. Bob Easthope, Graham Day, David Whitworth and Stew Hamill, with all members of that rink doing their bit managed to sneak a win against an ever so
strong Emerald Isle 4. Unfortunately with one win, one draw and one defeat the result hinged on the shots difference and in this case it went to Emerald Isle. However, a great day in great company resulted in a relaxed enjoyable time for all. On Friday The Mustangs were entertained by La Siesta Gold, we had a great morning’s bowls, only surpassed by the company. A gusty wind caused a little consternation, but did not prevent us having a very competitive match with several rinks being very close, alas in the end The Golds took 4 of the rinks to our 2, but it was a good showing, away from home. Maxine Wright, Gary Newson and Rod Wright 11-26. June Whitworth, Keith Cunningham and Geoff Jones 14-12. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 16-21. Jim Gracie, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 11-14. Margaret Odell, Brian Taylor and Ron Odell 12-16. Barbara Jones, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 1615.For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at briantaylor_es@yahoo.co.uk or Carolyn Harris on 966774316 or at elranchobowls.secretary@gmail.com. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Seasonal Golf Pricing Love it or hate it but our Spanish hosts continue to apply a strategy of seasonal pricing where the base price of golf varies throughout the year and good or bad it is here with us to stay until there is some dramatic change on the market place. The good news is that with effect from 1st December 2014 most of the local golf courses apply their LOW SEASON tariffs that will stay in place until 28th February 2015.The other good news is that as most of the courses are relatively quiet over these winter months with tourists being in short supply and many residents returning back to the UK for Christmas and the New Year, the pace of play can be quicker and 5 hour rounds should not exist at these times. Unfortunately good news is usually the precurser to bad news and this is the case on this occasion. You will recall that in 2012 the Spanish government increased IVA tax on golf from 8% to 21% and the golf courses attacked this problem in a number of ways. Some simply passed on the costs in full, some partially and some held the previous prices. Those courses that held the prices in 2012 are now feeling the squeeze and with increases of circa 100% for electricity and 15% for water, they are now looking to increase their prices for next year to remain economically viable. For example Alenda, Alicante, Font Del Llop, La Marquesa and Las Colinas have indicated small increases on 2015 prices while Vistabella will retain their current prices. The message is therefore simple to fill your boots in the winter low season period and get some cheap golf while you can. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are some of the best currently available to you. Golf Course Price Comments Alenda €86 Two Players and Buggy Alicante €47 Single Green Fee & Buggy (before 9.30am) Altorreal €70 Two Players and Buggy Font Del Llop €39 Single Player and Buggy La Finca €102 Two Green Fees and Buggy La Peraleja €120 Four Players and Two Buggies La Marquesa €35 Single Green Fee (weekends only) La Serena €82 Two Players and Buggy Las Colinas €126 Two Players and Buggy Las Ramblas €82 Two Players and Buggy Roda €90 Two Players and Buggy Villamartin €90 Two Players and Buggy (before 9am) Vistabella €59 Two Players and Buggy (weekends) Deal of the week: €59 for 2 players and buggy at Vistabella on Tuesday 2nd December 2014 (course price €75). CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY This week we journeyed to the wonderful Seve designed course at Alicante for our weekly stableford competition. We arrived to find the course in its usual super condition apart from the greens which, disappointingly, were showing signs of wear and were quite bumpy causing problems for most of us.The weather was cool and, thankfully, dry given the adverse forecast with a light breeze which was of no consequence golf wise. There was a fir,st time winner in Dennis Sims who managed a creditable 37 points just holding off Del Blackman who managed 35 points. The nearest the pin prizes went to Charlie Rodgers and Del Blackman, the par 4 2nd in 2 was won by Dennis Sims and the par 5 10th in 3 went to Bill Denne and the longest drive was won by Louis Lincoln. Next week we are at Vistabella first tee 08:30 so we will be leaving the bar at 07:45.

The Celts Club de Golf at La Serena Our latest tournament saw the conclusion of our Invitational league at our home club La Serena. The tournament was established with the intention of bringing together our members in teams of players who generally do not play together. Although it was set up as a fun event it proved to be very competitive indeed. Altogether we had four teams of eight, three from The Celts and one team from our resident Professional Diego Torne. The teams competed over a four game series and when all the cards were collated the team managed by Mary Wigley was declared the champions. The tournament proved very successful and we look forward to 2015 and what it will bring. It is envisaged that we will have to increase the number of teams next year in
the event as we The Celts now have over sixty five members alone in La Serena. On a further note of interest, the International League which is funded by the Federation de Golf de Valencia is also coming to an exciting climax. There are four teams all challenging for the title with just two points separating four teams, Bonalba, La Marquesa, San Miguel and The Celtic Tigers. The remaining two games are to be played at Los Colinas on the 7th of December and the final round at La Finca on the 14th. By the way did I mention that the cost of playing at these fabulous courses is 20 euro. We have already had a number of requests from various societies and clubs to join an expanded league next year.
ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY ALICANTE GOLF – 25th NOVEMBER 2014 It was back to the Seve designed course for the sixth time this year and as always we get a super welcome, the course played well but it is starting to look a little tired and needs some TLC, but for our senior players there was some good scoring on a long course. Has someone told the weather man that’s its November? We had wall to wall sunshine and 24 degrees. Results of the day were: Gold Category Silver Category 1st Arthur Williams 34 pts 1st Rocket Ron 33 pts 2nd Ivie Davies 32 pts C /B 2nd Geoff Wild 31 pts 3rd Geoff Poyner 32 pts 3rd Ron Chambers 25 pts NTP: Hole 3: Malcolm Anderson Hole 6: Rocket Ron Hole 8: Les Yates, Hole 12: Brian McKenzie Hole 15: Peter Daggert Hole 17: Selina McKenzie Long Drive: Malcolm Anderson Best Guest: Selina McKenzie It’s now coming to the last month of the year and what a good year we have had and wish to thank all the Directors of Golf and their staff for making us so welcome. It was back to Izzy’s Bar for our favourite munchies, and Caroline’s Izzy Chips, all followed by “Rocket” Ron to present the prizes, the prize giving was delayed due to feast of the Izzy chips and golf. Our next game Tuesday 9 December at Vistabella Golf for The Izzy
Trophy, which is our last one of the year and is the Christmas game, so if you wish to wear some festive attire it will give the day a Cool Noel feel. Let’s face it our Christmas Dinner is the day after. The first tee time is at 09.27. Please be there 45mins before tee off Photo: GOLD Winners: Ivie Davies – Geoff Poyner – Arthur Williams

John O'Brien With the weather looking a little threatening, we armed ourselves with brollies and set forth to do battle once again in the Monthly Medal, there were 18 players this week. TORRY FLATTER TO DECEIVE IN DEFEAT FC JOVE ESPANOL ESPANOL ...........2 CD TORREVIEJA ...............1 For the first half hour of this local(ish) fixture inside Deportiva San Vicente Stadium, Torry not only ran the show, but were making their Alicante based hosts, look every bit the div 3 basement side they were. Then for some inexplicable reason, they switched off, allowing Jove to have a bigger say of the match. Bad defending, coupled with poor finishing, could go some way towards an explanation, but so could manager Galiana's insistence at starting Cristian on the bench. The man injects much needed urgency into the side, as he takes on players at will, setting up attack after attack. So, when he brought him on after 49 mins, then Steve after 55, us Torry fans were at least treated to more attempts on goal, even though Steve's efforts were sadly lacking in the accuracy department! Steve is swiftly becoming an enigma, but his confidence is not helped by the despicable way at which opponents regularly target him as public enemy number one. He's originally from Cameroon, and unfortunately racism within Spanish football is endemic, so much so that underhanded dirty tactics are in evidence, week in week out. The man's clumsy, cumbersome, and unfortunately naïve, but malicious he most certainly aint, but watching opponents go down as if they'd been shot by a sniper in 'Platoon', then get up without so much as a scratch on them, sickens me to the stomach! After only 4 mins, Torry earned 3 corners in quick succession, the latter resulting in Ferran flashing a header across the face of goal. Torry took a fortu-
itous lead on 16 mins, following Cesar's speculative shot from the edge of the box, which squirmed under the body of a somewhat embarrassed keeper. Carrasco had the ball in the net from Jorge's header on 25 mins, but alas he was adjudged to be in an offside position. Warning signs were given on 35 mins, when Manrique squandered a glorious opportunity, blasting over from 5 yds out, but Torry hit back through a Jorge blockbuster which was well saved. With time edging towards the interval, Torry were undone by a inch perfect corner, which an unmarked Manrique headed home at the near post. Worse was to follow, when only 5 mins into the new half, Panos unleashed a spectacular swerving 25 yd shot, which beat keeper Oscar's despairing dive, almost breaking the back of the net (wasn't that hard, but it sounds good!). Cue Cristian's entrance, whose electric pace was instrumental in the removal of Jove manager Jose Rocamora from the bench, following criticism of the refs award of a free kick in favour of said player. His little angels picked up 5 yellow cards, whilst Vicente and Cristian (self defence your honour!) also received cautions. Alexis, Cristian and Steve, all had good efforts miss the target, but they can have no complaint at this 3rd away defeat on the trot. Sunday 7 December, ko 5pm, sees Torry entertain another local(ish) side, when Novelda visit Nelson Mandela Stadium.
LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY @ BONALBA
We arrived at BONALBA expecting the rain which had been forecast for the afternoon, but it stayed dry and the round was played in slightly overcast conditions and with a pleasant temperature. The BONALBA Club deserve thanks for providing excellent prizes on the day for which we are very grateful. A mixed bag as far as scores were concerned but the leading scores were impressive. Nearest the pins were won by the usual suspects,President Barry Thorogood,Norman
Pickett and the Secretary, Alan Craig [x2]. Third place in the competition went to Jimmy Scott with 33pts,on countback losing to John Thompson in 2nd place. Winner, with a great score of 36 points was Eric Taylor, with whom I played and saw him drive the ball into the lake on the 18th which he assured me had nothing to do with protecting his handicap. Unfortunately he had to fly to the U.K. after his round and was not there to receive his prizes, green fees ,buggies and dinner for 4 people. Many thanks to Bonalba for supplying this great prize. Our next meeting is at Las Colinas 0920 start on 11th December for a great price of 40 Euros. A reminder about Presentation Night on Friday 5th December at a cost of 15 Euros.Requirements to Elspeth please on e-mail elspeth4mcd@yahoo.co.uk or on Tel.965077204. Another reminder regarding the AGM on 8th December at the Sports Centre. Thanks as usual to Helena and Paulo for the food.
LO CRISPIN GS Font del Llop – 26.11.1 There were 31 of us travelled the short distance up country to Font del Llop, the venue for our last singles game of the 2014. This course designed by Blake Stirling and Marco Martin is a challenge and delight for all level of players. The design is American with a Scottish layout, maybe the Scottish connection gave Danny MacErlean the inspiration to play well, as he produced an ace on hole 12 over the water. Others came in with good scores as well, negociating the river five ponds and several ravines not to mention the severe semi-rough. No record was kept as to how many balls were lost and no-one was willing to tell, but at the end of the day we had all enjoyed the experience playing our favourite sport in the Spanish sunshine. Results: Gold Division: 1st Harry Wilcock 37pts, 2nd Brian Coultate 30pts and 3rd Dicky Claeys 28pts. Silver: 1st Meirion Roberts 37pts, 2nd Stan Earl 33pts and 3rd Malcolm Morrison 29pts (c/b) Bronze Division: 1st Danny (hole in one) McErlean 32pts, 2nd Steve Harrington 30pts and 3rd John Featherstone 25pts. NTPs: Ron Stephenson hole 3, Paul Lyndon-Hogg hole 8, Danny MacErlean hole 12, Brian Coultate hole 16 and Harry Wilcock hole 17. There were two 2s Harry Wilcock and Meirion Roberts and Danny McErlean´s ace earned him a double share. The free game draw went to Stan Earl, so a free game at our next venue Las Colinas, nice Christmas present Stan! After the presentation at the Lo Crispin Tavern we all celebrated the hole in one with Danny with Jack Daniels and wine a fitting conclusion to a good day.
RUBY’S GS
With even numbers for our fun day match, Ruby's golf society played a Texas scramble at El Plantio. There were three teams with exactly the same score but PA Theresa's team were way ahead of the rest 10 points clear and scooped the winning prize with Glyn Pierce, John Andrews and David Trotman. NTP on the par 3's were Roy Stanley, Bill Malcom and Glyn Pierce, ntp in 2 was Buck Taylor. Longest drive for the men was Roy Stanley and for the ladies Theresa Wright. A great day finished off with a great buffet at the Med . There a few sore heads a week past Friday following our presentation lunch the day ( and night!) before, however it did not affect Brian Humphreyson, Ken Meridith, Ken and Liz Robertson who won our "Best 2 from 4 (with all 4 counting on the par 3's)" with 98 pts. On Monday, in glorious conditions, we played a 2 ball better ball and the winners with 44 pts were "man of the moment" Rod Doel and Dave Pulling who just pipped Nick and Donna Campbell's 43pts. We had a Medalford on Wednesday where below 19 is under par. Ron Phipps, who is in a rich vein of form, incurred another handicap cut ( desite having a 9 at the third hole!) winning with 17. The others winning sweep cash were -2nd Dave Pulling 18, 3rd Doug Wright 20, 4th Carole Wheeler 21, 5th Liz Robertson 22. The twos pot was shared between Ron Phipps, Dave Pulling and John Wheeler. We ended the week with a "Counter Team Game"- The winners with a score of 99 were-Geoff Biggerstaff , Rod Bryant, Norman Page and Benedicte Kruse.
San Miguel Golf Society At La Finca. November 26th SMGS’s monthly visit to La Finca, attended by 37 members and 4 guests, found a course quite damp from the overnight rain, but bathed in pleasant warm sunshine and with an absence of wind, making playing conditions pretty good. Gold category players made, in general, the best of these, closely followed by the leaders in the silver category. Some confusion at prize giving was finally sorted out and who won what clarified, a delay which at least had the positive effect of allowing for additional friendly banter and extended drinking time. Results by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Ray Ewins (31), 3rd Mick Roscoe (32 on CB), 2nd Chris Hamblett (32 on CB) and 1st Brian Mulligan with 34 points. Silver Category: 4th Steve Davis (34 on CB), 3rd John Drakesmith (34 on CB), 2nd Ken Potts (37 on CB), and 1st Robin Eastman, also with 37 points and winning on countback. Gold Category: 4th Ivan Hanak (35), 3rd Shay Cunningham (36), 2nd Ivor Turkington (37) and 1st, with a fantastic score playing off of 7 handicap, John Osborne with 40 points. The Abacus winner was John Parker. Best visitor prize went to Alan Coombes. Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s were won by Mike Freeman (3), Keith Wraithmell (6 and 16) and Tommy Boyle (13). Nearest the pins in 3 shots on par 4’s were won by Brian Staines (hole 7 Gold Division), Ken Potts (hole 14 Silver Division) and Ellen Drakesmith (hole 10 Bronze Division). Our thanks go to the staff at La Finca golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day.
