CHRISTMAS MARRED BY PROTESTERS
Tel: 96 673 0057
The Orihuela Costa became a blaze of the shimmering glow of colour that emanated from the illuminated decorations of Christmas on Friday, as the official start of the festive season was launched with the traditional switching on of the lights ceremony. At 6pm, the switch-on was made, with local schoolgirl Rihanna chosen to press the magic button, all in the presence of the attending councillors, Carolina Gracia and Emilio Zaplana from the PSOE who came from Orihuela city, Bob Houliston from CLARO, and of course
Martina Scheurer representing the Los Verdes green party of Orihuela, the Councillor for the Coast, who presided over the event. The music was provided first by the Orihuela Costa Civic Centre Choir, followed by the children from the Los Dolces School in Playa Flamenca, then the children from the Scandinavian School, finally wrapped up by a chorus of individual and guitar backed singers from the Civic Centre. However, the evening turned altogether a little darker as an unofficial protest swamped the scene, with around 150 people, some wielding banners, targeted the event to raise awareness of their campaign to have a football field for the local children. Continued from Page One The town hall had become aware of the possible protest earlier in the week, a protest which was neither correctly applied for nor approved according to sources at the town hall, in fact, the protest was scheduled to start at 7pm, according to the organisers, who had also promised not to bring the protest signs to the town hall. The reason for their frustration followed a visit from inspectors from the town hall, accompanied by the police, to two municipal sports fields on the Orihuela Costa, one of which had been fenced off, the other which was in the process of being enclosed, but that was stopped by the inspector from the urbanism department. It is believed that the organisers of the local football team had become increasingly frustrated by the fact that the CDM municipal sports centre has to be paid for to use, as it has been operated by a private company since it first opened under the control of the previous government. With the cost of membership seemingly too much for many of those children wishing to attend the club´s functions, calls to obtain family discounts, or financial help for those who struggle, were seemingly not being heard. As a result of their need for a dedicated sports pitch, the club organisers took it upon themselves to commandeer the municipal plots for their use, action which was blocked by the town hall as these plots belong to the municipality and are for the use of all. Having been apparently “kicked out” from using the municipal sports fields, claims were made that the children were now being forced to travel to neighbouring Pilar de la Horadada to use their facilities, despite the fact that
Tuesday, 9th December, 2014 Orihuela has a suitable site, but it is considered to be far cheaper for those children wishing to play football to be transported out of the municipality, it would appear. Unlike in Orihuela City, where a sports field had been made available to the team there for free, it is not the case on the Orihuela Costa. A meeting was held earlier this week with the Councillor for the Coast, in an attempt to try to find a common solution to the problem. Although there is no doubt that most people would support the creation and availability of sports centres and clubs for young people to use, many of the people attending the Christmas event were both shocked and disappointed by the few protestors who entered the area where the celebrations were taking place. Amongst the many comments heard from those not happy about the protest, one audience member said, “It´s disgusting, we can´t hear the children singing over the noise”, another saying, “this is so wrong, we´re here for the children”. A parent who didn´t want to be named said, “My daughter had been looking forward to this for weeks. She was excited, but very nervous, now it´s been ruined for her”. Though many tried to ignore those protestors who started to block the view with their banners, the police asked them to refrain from doing so, though an apparent lack of respect for their requests was clear, as the protestors simply lifted their banners once more, even forcing some people to leave early, one of those who did leave commenting, “What sort of message does this give to children? It´s okay to disturb everybody else without thinking about their feelings! How about teaching a bit of
respect for others!” Bob Houliston from CLARO said, “Of course we support the protest, in fact we agreed to go along with them, although they said they were starting at 7, but must have decided to start early”. But when faced with the comments of the disappointment felt by some of those attending, Houliston made it clear that “it´s not our protest”. The Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer said, “The lighting of the Christmas illuminations this year was a great success with far more participants than last year. I would like to give my thanks especially to the children of the Los Dolses Colegio situated in Playa Flamenca as well as from the Scandinavian school. I also would like to thank the participants of the demonstration who acted quietly and so respecting the singers of all ages and nationalities which volunteered at the act, especially the children”. In response to the disturbances caused, Scheurer said, “Although I do agree with the request of a free football field for all our youngsters, I think there is a place and a time for everything and the children should not have been used for the demonstration on that particular day and event”, concluding, “I wonder what would have been the reaction of the protesting parents if it had been their children singing there....” As the disappointment caused by some may paint another black mark on the attempts to hold an event that the entire coastal zone could get involved in, the Orihuela Costa is now illuminated with Christmas lights and a tree. Although the number of lights was the same as last year, effort was made to try to bring them together to provide more

dramatic coverage than the sometimes seemingly isolated lights seen before. The tree was relocated to the town hall this year, so that it could be appreciated on a more regular basis by the many people who pass through the area each day. As was the case with the position last year, the tree was still a focal point for passing traffic on the N332 coastal road, highlighting the heart of the Orihuela Costa community. been dressed in flowers, including the traditional poinsettia, many of which have been cultivated and grown in the Orihuela Costa´s very own horticultural centre, thus saving money spent in previous years on having to buy the plants from contractors. As the evening drew to a close, those who took part in the event were treated to seasonal refreshments in the shape of Christmas biscuits, Cava and Muscatel, all generously paid for out of the personal pocket of the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer.

SPAIN CONSIDERED LESS CORRUPT THAN LAST YEAR
Despite another year of court cases, resignations and even prison terms, corruption in Spain is not considered as bad as last year, according to data published by the Transparency International organisation in Berlin this week. In fact, in the ranking of 175 countries, Spain has shown an improvement of 3 places in the chart, adding 60 points to their score, one point more than in 2013. Now in 37th place, Spain is behind neighbouring Portugal, sitting in 31st place, Poland at 35, and well ahead of both Italy and Greece that share 69th place. The United Kingdom stands in 14th place, with Denmark, New Zealand and Finland holding the top 3 places respectively. The report says that “Poorly equipped schools, counterfeit medicine and elections decided by money are just some of the consequences of public sector corruption. Bribes and backroom deals don’t just steal resources from the most vulnerable – they undermine justice and economic development, and destroy public trust in government and leaders.” Alejandro Salas, director of Transparency International, explained how the perception of corruption in Spain remained stable due to the scandals that hit members of the conservative government of Mariano Rajoy and the Socialist opposition who can “no longer hide”, whilst also encouraging public debate and litigation. “The improvement is very significant. Spain remains the same, stagnant”, he said. “Corruption is not new in Spain, is a historical phe-
nomenon”, explaining how when the economy was good, people “lived with it” as something that “does not bother” them. Now, it is no longer hidden, but “What strikes me is that corruption in Spain is very structural, very systematic. It is not itself a party, a government of a province. It is steeped in different sectors of society. The solution will require many compromises and efforts”, he concluded. In terms of the scoring of the Transparency International index, a score of 0 would mean that a country is “perceived to be highly corrupt”, whereas at the other end of the scale, a score of 100 would indicate “perceived low levels of corruption”. More than two thirds of the countries included in the index this year scored less than 50. Thee Leader Denmark has 92 points, up from 91 points last year and 90 in 2012. The United Kingdom scored 78 points, up from 76 in 2013 and 74 in 2012. With their 60 points, Spain showed an increase from last year´s 59, but a decrease from the 65 points scored in 2012. Somalis and North Korea are at the bottom of the table, with just 8 points each, the same score they have presented for each of the last 2

PROVINCIAL PP REACH OUT TO EURO PEAN RESIDENTS he provincial president of the Partido Popular, José Císcar, is reaching out to European residents, in the hope of gaining favour before the elections in May. With the deadline looming at the end of this month when registration for your right to vote expires, it is crucial that those intending to have their voice heard in the elections ensure that they are on the voters list. A video has been produced in English, German and Spanish, considered the three principle languages of local residents, that explains how to obtain the opportunity to vote in the May elections, and explains how to register your willingness to vote before the 30th of December. The provincial president has also promoted the creation of a blog, explaining to European residents of the province how the PP are creating initiatives to improve the communities where they reside as, “active members of the social, economic and cultural life of the Province of Alicante and citizens of Valencia”. Císcar also defends the full integration of the PP in each municipality and argues that these initiatives

These initiatives were introduced to mayors, spokespeople and local presidents of about 40 municipalities in which greater implementation of European residents in the Province of Alicante is considered crucial in the run up to the elections, during a meeting held at the Provincial Headquarters of the PP this week. More information, as well as the video, is available on the website, HYPERLINK "http://www.alicantepp.es" www.alicantepp.es, although the English section is not particularly obvious at first. In order to see the video, click on “Actualidad” on the menu bar, then on “Noticias”, and by scrolling through you will see the title “How to vote in the Municipal Election if you are eu citizens living in Alicante”, along with an introductory paragraph in Spanish, but it is from here you can click the link marked “Video”, which takes you then to YouTube to view it. To make it a little easier to find, we have posted it on our website, www.theleader.info.

YOU HAVE THE POW ER By Francisco Lidon
As many of you know, the Rojales municipal elections will be coming up on 24 May 2015. As such I would like all residents of Ciudad Quesada, whether Spanish or foreign, to be aware of how important it is to vote. We live in a charming town where the majority of the population are non Spanish, yet despite this they are not very well informed about how to vote and ensure that their voice is heard. We are all conscious of the general deterioration in Ciudad Quesada (compared with the town centre of Rojales, with streets in a poor state, lack of lighting in public places, the shameful state of green areas, need for traffic signs in certain areas and lack of services to meet our needs. For the next local elections, on 24 May 2015, EU citizens already signed onto the Padron who have not yet declared their intention to vote will have until 30 December 2014 to do so at the Census and Statistics Department at Rojales Town Hall, and non. EU residents coming from Bolivia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Korea, Ecuador, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago will have until 15 January 2015 to make their application at the Town Hall. It is vital that we all ensure that we can vote and participate in the forthcoming elections, and make it known that foreigners are the majority and not, as they are perceived, the minority. It is important that we know about the proposals put forward by the different political parties and take a look at the promises made previously that have never been fulfilled. The majority of the Rojales population are foreign and that is why it is important to register before 30 December and make sure that you vote in May. Many of the residents of Ciudad Quesada, like me, have been very disillusioned, living with unlit streets for years, and walking through supposedly green areas full of dead plants and trees due to the absence of any maintenance. It is time that the foreign residents knew their rights and obligations and this is possibly the time to shout out and be heard (once and for all). IF WE WANT OUR NEEDS MET THEN IT IS OUR DUTY AND OBLIGATION TO VOTE.

COASTAL COUNCILLOR CLARIFIES CONFUSION
The Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, has been defending the alleged unfairly shared funds obtained from the sale of coastal plots of land, after former councillor for the coast, Bob Houliston, criticised the fact that money was taken from the full amount to complete a Civic Centre building in a small village of the municipality, before the remaining funds were spilt. Houliston says that he believes that the money should come from the share of the funds destined for the villages and not the full amount, but Scheurer pointed out that Houliston supported the use of the money to complete the centre at La Aparecida when the proposal was rejected in September 2013. Scheurer says that when Houliston was working in conjunction with the PP, he approved their proposal in November to use some of the money from the sale of land, before the split was discussed. Mr Houliston voted in favour of that motion thus agreeing the proposal to use money from the sale for the Civic Centre, according to the minutes of the meetings, Scheurer says. In December of that year, the question over spending 1,350,000 euro to build a Civic Centre in the small inland village of La Aparecida, home to around 2,500 residents, around 2% of the municipality, was raised once more. In an interview on Exite Radio, Houliston then said, “That one tiny village is where the councillor Mr Aniote lives”, José Aniote being the former councillor for the coast under the PP government. Meanwhile, the town hall has received lots of complaints about the planned location of the Ecopark at Lomas de Cabo Roig. Pedro Mancebo says that a project is already
in place for the completion of the site at Lomas de Cabo Roing, but according to the Councillor for the Coast, the creation of the architectural study for the project is questionable, as the correct procedure for submission was not followed. Studies of the geological site and the general plan would have to be conducted, which may result in the project getting blocked. All suitable plots allocated as for use of this type are in residential areas, so the Ecopark will have to go somewhere and wherever it goes it will be unpopular, but the government are still investigating the alternatives. The coastal councillor has also been clarifying requests made by a new federation of associations on the Orihuela Costa, who are keen for an assessment of income from tax to be carried out, so that the money that comes from the residents can go directly to the areas where they live. According to Scheurer, this type of move is not possible by law, due to the inter-territorial compensation legislation, as it would mean that the smaller areas of the municipality would never be able to afford any kind of maintenance work or investment, and the income is balanced across the entire municipality, which operates as a whole, reminding that the Orihuela Costa is a part of the municipality of Orihuela, and not an independent state. The promised collection of building rubbish has begun on the Orihuela Costa, starting on calle Ontario, before moving through the remaining areas of the coast, focusing on the water channels and other areas which have become dumping grounds for many years. The sites will then be fenced to prevent further dumping. A box has been placed in the Orihuela Costa town, where donations of toys for the needy can be deposited as part

DOLL FACTORY CLOSES Andalusian souvenir manufacturer Muñecas Marín, renowned for its flamenco and bullfighter dolls, is shutting down. A drop in sales and strong competition from Asia has finally forced the closure of an iconic company that was founded in 1928. CRY ME A RIVER Applications have now been submitted to the Planning Authorities to build two 3 or 4 star hotels in Torrevieja, according to the mayor, Eduardo Dolon, and the head of the Municipal Department of Planning, Francisco Moreno. The first of these projects is the one that would rise above the old resort Los Europeos in La Mata , on the avenue of the same name. The mayor said that the developers have already qualified for the 50% Building and Construction tax and that the next step will be the presentation of the construction project by the owner, a foreign investor. The other hotel will be constructed in Torrevieja itself on one of the few open spaces on the coastline, at Campico San Mamés along the Avenida de
Gregorio Marañón. The General Urban Plan shows the construction of several tower blocks of over twenty stories and the two council officials state that one of these could become a hotel which, like La Mata, will have breathtaking views and be situated in an unbeatable location. The Planning Councillor said that over the years there have been many intended projects in the area but none have come to fruition with each in turn being delayed or cancelled but now "there is great interest on the part of developers' of this second hotel and right nowin the urban departmentwe are evaluating the preliminary reports to ensure that all municipal ordinances are met.
SPAIN WORST IN EUROPE FOR ANIMAL ABANDONMENT Spain has the worst record for pet abandonment in the whole of Europe, with a domestic animal left to its own devices every 3 minutes, on average. According to a study by the Observatorio de la Fundación Affinity, 150,000 pets are abandoned each year, with the economic state of the country present in 15% of those cases, with struggling families no longer able to feed or care for their extended family members. Summer is also one of the biggest causes, as families with pets find it difficult to plan a trip away with their animal, and so leave them behind. Unexpected litters account for 19% of all cases, loss of interest in the animal is said to be the reason 10% are abandoned, 9% of people blame the end of the

GREEN SHOOTS The Unesco World Heritage Site, home to more than 90,000 palm trees, has seen the loss of five different specimen’s of palm during recent years but at long last the measures taken against the weevil infestation are beginning to show positive results. Among them, the councillor spoke of the reforestation campaign and a continuous inspection of the municipal gardens together with the use of chemical and biological treatments, the latter through collaboration with universities and researchers. "We are on track in the fight against the plague," said the councillor, who explained that the council is spending 1.2 million euros a year on the maintenance and treatment of the palms.” “Some of the money comes from the regional administration,” he said, “although the amount has declined in recent years from 72,000 euros in 2009 to 10,000 euros this year.” Although he was unable to tell the press how many palms have been lost in recent years he did say that five different variety’s have gone following infestation by the red palm weevil. But he assured everyone that the current management of the site and the discharge of any necessary action now lies with the City Council and not the Board of the Palm Grove.

VALENCIAN FUNDS REDUCE ALMORADI UNEMPLOYED
Almoradi is aware that one of the hallmarks of their municipality is the large expanse of green areas and public spaces that are available to residents, in total an area of one hundred thousand square meters of gardens in seventeen parks, each of which requires a great deal of care and attention. As the current Parks and Gardens team is finding it difficult to maintain the parks, Councillor of Finance, María Gómez, said that she will use funds from the Valencian Government Joint Employment Plan to recruit a number of currently unemployed personnel to strengthen their numbers. Valencia’s current contribution is 11,200 euros which Gómez has promised to double from local funds. This will increase the current budget to a total 67,000 euros which will also be used to clean up the town, maintain its parks as well as to clean and repaint street markings. The deputy mayor said there have been many complaints regarding park and street maintenance which have largely arisen as a result of a reduction in their budget and
One of the old buildings that will be cleaned up by the team. subsequent cut in services but now the additional funding will enable the council to allocate 11 staff to the maintenance of local parks as well as improving children's facilities and street and park furniture. The addition will allow those staff to be funded for the next five months during which period they will each work thirty hours a week. Gómez was clear to state that these additional staff will not infringe on any of the
work currently being carried out by street cleaners or operators of the refuse disposal team. Their function is simply to complement their actions adding that the parks and streets will be subject to more thorough tidying work. Indidó Gomez will be the official responsible for the additional recruitment and priority will be given to those who are unemployed, over 45 years of age and with dependents who are under 25.
TEMPORARY CONTRACT BUDGET DOUBLED FOR YOUNG PEOPLE The regional government has announced that it is to double the funding for aid allocated to create jobs for young people, in order to try to combat unemployment in the worst affected sector of the population. Similar to work conducted in Orihuela recently, the plan provides for a temporary contract of six months to the long term unemployed, whereas they can not only earn the minimum salary, they also train in key skills to enable them to find long term employment. The first batch of aid was spread across 66 municipalities, which has now been extended to 72 across Valencia. The original budget for the plan was set at 3.5 million euro, but in view of the apparent success, this has now increased to 7.9 million, all destined for those under 30 years of age. Schemes like the one which saw the improvement of park land in Orihuela, and will shortly see a new batch of workers create a network of cycle paths are not the only way into the scheme, qualifying companies can also apply for a grant from the ministry of employment in order to give young people work through the employment agency SERVEF. A THIRD OF SPAIN'S WORKERS ON MINIMUM WAGE Official figures published last Thursday show that the minimum wage in Spain during 2013 was 9,034 which, according to tax office statistics, equates to just 645 a month when spread over 14 payments. That was the amount that thirtyfour percent of Spain's 16,682,861 employees managed to earn, including virtually all workers aged under 25. Amongst the young the figure was much higher with almost 75% of the million working people aged 18 to 25 earning the minimum salary, while in the 26–35 age range, the figure was 38%. The tax office figures also show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, 7.7 million people, was made up of people earning less than €1,000 a month. In December 2013 politicians froze the country's minimum wage for 2014, a move criticized by many who argued the purchasing power had gone down 5.5 per cent in four years. The Spanish minimum wage is almost the same as the Greek figure of €683.76 and below that of Italy (€880). Only Portugal, with €565.83, pays its employees less and is the only country in Western Europe with a lower minimum wage. The current UK minimum hourly rate is £6.50 while in Spain it is £2.18 per hour (€2.68)

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
DRINKING FOGGY WATER I have always been a little cynical about the value of bottled water. It always irritates me when a waiter tries to palm me off with an expensive bottle of ‘French Mountain Spring’ water, when there are perfectly good bottled waters available in the Canary Islands. Not only is it a travesty for the carbon footprint linked to any product, but why is French bottled water better than anyone else’s? Of course the answer is commercialisation and profit. Over the years we have been led to believe that bottled water is somehow better for us than the water running freely from our taps, although I accept that use of a water purifier and filter is always a good idea to avoid stomach upsets. Yes, the addition of a fancy label and a posh French-sounding name adds up to quite an expensive bottle of water. A few years ago I had the good fortune to spend an entertaining evening with an engineer who worked for a water company in London. His description of the chemical composition of tap water, including the side effects caused by
some of the chemicals that cannot be removed, which can lead to the development of impressive breasts in men, led me to look at bottled water in a new light. It was then that I discovered the joys of mountain mist. Mountain mist is collected from the highest peaks of the Canary Islands, which is now being bottled and sold as drinking water. It is collected on the island of Gran Canaria from fog at altitudes of 16,000 metres above sea level and sold under the brand name of Alisios, which is the name given to chilly, damp tropical winds that give the Canary Islands their typical climate at high altitudes. As much as 20,000 litres of clean water is collected from the mist in 30 prism shaped containers each month. This cool, steamy mist is sold as ‘Canarian Mist Water’, a process that is also kind to the environment since it leaves no waste and there are no emissions from the process.
British chain Poundland is bringing its everything-at-£1 stores to Spain. The offer is changing to everything at €1.50 and the name to Dealz, but the concept remains the same: a range of well-known brand products sold at a single fixed price. The firm unveiled its third Spanish store in Madrid this week, after opening branches in Torremolinos and Alicante in July. The plan is to set up 10 outlets in the space of a year, with the creation of 500 jobs.
WATER SAVING
The water collected provided drinking water in an area with no rivers. More recently, in 1948, a man from the island of El Hierro avoided a devastating drought by collecting water ‘milked’ from trees in zinc containers, which was then sold to villagers.
If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and
THIRD STORE FOR POUNDLAND
Whilst living under the recent threat of drought, a study by the National Federation of Irrigators in Spain reveals that farmers have reduced their yearly consumption of water for irrigation by 20%, saving some 1,200 cubic hectometres per year. The report praises Spain as the global leader in water saving for agricultural use, along with Israel.
It seems that the collection of mountain mist for use in this way is not new since there are accounts of similar water collection processes in historical accounts that date back a mere 2000 years. Pliny the Elder gives an account of the Garoe tree being ‘milked’ in a similar manner, which filled man-made ponds – a kind of early reservoir.
So next time you are offered an expensive bottle of ‘French Mountain Spring’ water in a pricey restaurant, maybe ask for a bottle of Canarian Mountain Mist water instead? That should stop the waiter in his tracks.

The storms that battered the Canary Islands last week have caused considerable damage to banana plantations, with around 4,500 plots affected, thus representing damage to 30% of the total acreage. In addition to the damage to banana crops, 25% of La Palma's avocado plantations have also been affected.

CYCLE ROUTES LAUNCHED IN PILAR Three new cycle routes around the municipality have been introduced according to Pilar councilor Eva Martinez as part of a local plan to invest in a more active lifestyle for its residents. The cost of the project is one hundred thousand euros, half of which will be borne by the Regional Ministry of Tourism.
The first route to be launched is one that runs through the municipality from Pinar de Campoverde to the coastal area and ending in Torre de la Horadada. The second circles around the pilareño town and will be known as 'ciclocalle'. The third route will run along the coastline of the municipality from El Mojon to Mil Palmeras. Each of the routes will be off road and distinctively marked with colored routes and unique signals. Martinez said that none of the routes involve complex or long distances as almost all are on flat ground, except that to the coast from Pinar de Campoverde which has some short hill features. "The intention is not to provide routes for athletes but more for those who want to meander along enjoying the gentle landscapes that the local countryside so the first two are about six kilometers long while the route that runs along the coast is about 15km long.” Each of the paths will also be provided with information panels which will point out items of interest that can be seen.

PRIZES OFFERED TO PILAR SHOPPERS Shoppers in Pilar de la Horadada can share in a bumper booty of gift vouchers, simply by spending more than 15 euro in participating stores in the Christmas period. Councillor Aurelio Samper explained that the aim of the campaign is to “promote holiday shopping and local consumption in Pilar de la Horadada in these weeks of December”, whilst trying to raise awareness amongst the neighbours of the town that “Pillar de la Horadada is your best mall, where they can find the best quality at competitive prices and with the advantage of personalized attention and guarantees”. With many local towns and retail outlets suffering as a result of the growth of larger shopping and commercial centres, this sort of promotion is seen as a lifeline to struggling businesses, whilst offering the shopper something back for their loyalty. A list of participating stores is available from the town hall, but all shops display a sign stating they are part of the “El Roscón”. By spending more than 15 euro in the shops, you run the chance of winning a prize of 20, 50, 100 or 200 euro in vouchers on their roulette wheel of fortune.

Having home insurance cover in Spain is not compulsory by law. However, at Linea Directa we highly recommend that you cover your buildings and their contents. Without insurance you will be fully responsible for footing the bill to any damages resulting from fire and water, a neighbours property, and you’ll be left unprotected against theft or damage from a wide range of potential mishaps. Your property in Spain may be let out and treated as a holiday home or it may be your permanent residence. In all cases, adequate home insurance is a must; after all, your property will certainly be one of your most valuable personal assets, and you need to protect it as such. When you take out a Spanish mortgage, one of the conditions from the bank will be compulsory buildings insurance from the lender to ensure that the bank loan is secured against risks to properties in Spain. Linea Directa can provide online quotes for Spanish buildings insurance. Its quick and easy and we will help you find the best deal for the needs of your particular cover. What’s at stake for uninsured properties? Most standard building insurance policies in Spain cover the actual structure of the building as well as the fixtures and fittings. This includes the roof, walls, windows, kitchen, bathroom installations and fitted wardrobes. Individual items of furniture and any personal possessions are not included. This requires a Spanish home contents insurance policy. The common elements included in your building insurance will be for occurrences like subsidence, third-party liability and protection against damage caused by theft, storms, vandalism, fire and flood. Home insurance with Linea Directa Linea Directa provides quality home insurance cover designed specifically for expatriates living in Spain. Whether you’re an existing home-owner or looking to purchase a property in Spain, our policies guarantee peace-of-mind at very competitive prices. On until the 8th of January, it displays artefacts from the Bou Ferrer, the largest Roman ship being excavated in the Mediterranean. The original findings from the site were reported in 1999, and so protection was immediately afforded due to the historic significance of the site. The ship was carrying 3,000 amphorae called “Dressel 7-11”, manufactured in Cádiz, each said to be containing fish sauce, and an accompanying cargo of lead ingots from the mines of Sierra Morena. The ship and her cargo have been featured by the National Geographic and the event is a considerable exhibition for Orihuela, where it will be held in the Maria Moliner public library. The CHRISTMAS event on the Orihuela Costa takes place on Sunday 14th December at 8pm when Conductor NIGEL HOPKINS presents his

LOCAL COORDINATOR STEPS DOWN AFTER RECORD YEAR
Once again the Orihuela Costa Branch of The Royal British Legion has smashed all records. As the membership has more than doubled in the years since it was first established 6 years ago so has the amount collected in it’s annual Poppy Appeal, and all against a background of economic austerity. In 2008, when the branch was first formed, there were just over 50 members. The Poppy Appeal raised 6,200 euro. Since that time the membership has increased to 150 with the most recent appeal collecting over 31,000 euro. That brought the accumulated total to €153,250, all of which has, or will be, used here in Spain to help ex service personnel and their dependants. Those who support this fine charity know all too well the good use to which collections are put in supporting those who have fallen on hard times and here on the Orihuela Costa, in recent months, the extremely active Welfare Committee, led by former RAF technician Jim Watt, has spent over 13,000 euro on vital medical equipment, including hearing aids, wheelchairs, glasses, mobility scooters, apparatus and utility bills for the home and even weekly shopping provisions. The funding itself has been raised through a variety of functions and events, not just appeals in local restaurants and bars but from the popular RBL golf days, sponsored fitness programmes, the distribution of poppies at markets, shopping centres, offices, major stores and air-
Keith will be handing over ports as well as at a multitude of variety shows, bbq’s, dinners and the Poppy Appeal to Eddie local dances. Of course charity legislation now requires that poppies are not sold but ‘distributed in return for donations'. Coleman For the last 4 years the appeal has been coordinated by Keith Carter who has also been holding down the appointment of Chairman, perhaps the two most demanding positions in the Branch. During that time he has worked tirelessly in support of the organisation and much of that achieved, and the funding raised, is as a direct result of his efforts. At the recent Annual General Meeting, Keith decided to relinquish the post of Poppy Appeal Coordinator, the mantle of which has now been assumed by Eddie Coleman. He will, however, retain the position of Branch Chairman for the next 12 months and work alongside his replacement during a period of handover. “It has been a great privilege to be involved with the Poppy Appeal”, said Keith, “knowing that the funding we have raised has been put to such a valuable and important use. I wish Eddie Coleman the very best in his current and future endeavours.” Membership of The Royal British Legion is open to all. You do not have to be ex military to join. The Orihuela Costa Branch meets every 3rd Thursday in the month at the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras starting at 7.30pm. www.orihuelacostarbl.com

FINE DINING FROM SPAIN cargo ship set sail from Valencia this week, with her chilled cargo destined to be delivered to Hong Kong. However, the unusual nature of the cargo is what has brought it to the headlines. The ship is carrying 4,000 deer penises, chilled to minus twenty degrees, in boxes containing 20 pairs of genitals. Although reindeer may well be in a lot of people´s minds at this time of year, in the thoughts of those set to consume the delicacy will be the believed promise that it will increase one´s libido and make the recipient more masculine. At 150 euro per portion they are not a cheap dietary supplement, Paco Polin, one of the largest exporters of deer penises in Spain, explains how the 30 centimetre long appendage would normally have been discarded, but with the 90,000 to 100,000 boost to his company revenue, it´s no wonder how Paco supports Pekinese Chef Xiao Shan, who says that “Eating penis is rich and can also give more force to be a man”, and he should know, having learnt to cook the organ from the age of 13.

GO EAST According to a survey by the travel website Skyscanner study, in which 2.5 million internet users were quizzed, Spanish tourists are showing an increased interest in holidaying in Asia and Central America. The results show an increasing interest in exotic destinations over the last three years, although Europe is still the leader in terms of reservations, with the UK, Germany, Italy and France tying with the US for second place.
COME VISIT The one thing that Benidorm does well is entertainment. So what better place to bring in 2015. Especially if you are using a warm welcoming 4* hotel with nightly entertainment, indoor pool, sauna, and all rooms with balcony. Travelling by coach from in or around the Torrvieja area will see you booked in to your hotel in time for lunch on the 31st. The afternoon you are free to take in the sights of Benidorm or to rest up for the coming nights festivities. And what a night of festivity it is. By mid evening you will be settling down to a stupendous 7 course meal where the food and drink keeps coming until a few minutes
before the bells. At midnight we follow the old Spanish tradition of hurriedly swallowing one grape for each strike of the clock as it gongs its way into the new year. As soon as the bells stop the band strikes up, people shake hands and embrace each other in a generous welcome to the year 2015. Dancers fill the floor while others visit the free bar which will be running until 3am. The party swings on in to the small hours. Gradually the party goers drift off to bed in the knowledge that tomorrow there are no dishes to wash, no beds to make no tidying to do. Tomorrow can be spent lazing on the balcony, playing pool or cards in the bar or sun terrace, having a reviving
dip in the indoor pool, or a refreshing stroll along the seafront. Buffet breakfast, lunch and evening meal are served in the ambiance of a pleasant tastefully laid out restaurant. That evening can be spent in the hotel bar or if you prefer you can do the town in Benidorm. By the 2nd of January we contentedly pour ourselves on to the coach for the short journey back to Torrevieja. This 3 day festive special is being offered by David’s Coachtrips for only 224€ per person. So if you are still looking for a really good New Year experience you should call (0034) 966785910 or book online on www.coachtripsonline.co, to reserve your places before it’s too late.
Spain is topping the choice for international tourists, according to an international survey. TripTrist Travel Planners say that tourists should consider the popularity of European Countries when planning their 2015 travel packages to Europe, where Spain tops the list followed by Italy and France, with Malta, Cyprus and Croatia on the Mediterranean being the interesting choice for popular, yet smaller countries.

All the week there has been plenty of water in the river from last weekends rain , and on the morning the skies opened up with quite a thunderstorm. But it cleared and turned out to be a nice day. The water however was very dirty, which disrupted the fishing. Winner on the day was Dave Hoare, second was Steve Collins, third Steve Fell and fourth Dennis Pick. Next weeks match will be the Christmas competition to be held at El Bosquet on Thursday the 13th of December, with pegs at 8.00am and fishing from 9.00 to 2.00pm. The final match of the year will be on December 20th, once again on the Eden Canal, and the first
match of the New Year will be on January 8th on the Sweetwater Canal. The only December Quiz is the Christmas Quiz, which will be held on December 16th, Teams of 6 or less are welcome to come along and take partcost of entry is 1€ per person. It commences at 7.30 pm. The final Club meeting for 2014 is on Sunday 21st December. The Committee meet at 10.30, followed by the General Meeting at 11.00. The Clubs home is the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is just off the N332 between Guardamar and La Mata, near the Repsol garage. LA SALINAS WINTER PETANCA LEAGUE The Las Salinas winter Petanca league is now in week 4, and up to now the sun has been out, but the teams are not looking forward to playing in the rain. In division 2 three teams are at the top but Los Bandidos are in 1st place because they have a better ball difference than the Breeze Bar Cannons and XPS. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY Last Wednesday the society returned to Las Colinas for the fourth and final time this year for the final round of the Eclectic competition for 2014 and also a Singles Stableford competition with 2 divisions. There was a near full turn-out to play what is arguably the best golf course on the Southern Costa Blanca. The course was as usual in first class condition with the weather being fine with little wind so there could be no excuses from the players if they didn’t perform except for “I just had a bad” day. There were the usual nice touches provided by the course management team. A free coffee before the game, a free pyramid of balls on the practice range, a free “Las Colinas” pitch repairer and momento to affix to your golf bag and a bottle of water. By all

Benijofar 4 v 2 CF Mil Palmeras u14’s With a few players missing some of the u12’s stepped up to the plate .Twice the Toros took the lead with Ben scoring early in the first half and then Paolo grabbing a goal early in the second half . The Toros defence stood tall through most of the match and linked up well with midfield to keep the pressure on Benijofar . A momentary slip in concentration can cost you a couple of goals at this level and that was the only difference between the two sides with the Toros letting 2 late goals to deny them any points .Some great performances all round . Hi Everyone, For our monthly stableford we travelled up to El Valle on a bright and sunny December morning to fine the course in great condition and pin placement done by a joker as trying to keep the ball near the pin was harder than trying to put in to the hole. Every pin was placed right on a slope so if you where only a few inches out you where 30 plus feet off the green such fun. Scoring on the day was low with the top score in Division 1 been 29 which was scored by 3 players with Mick Hardy winning on count back from Paul Newman and Paul Hamlin. In Division 2 we saw the best score of the day from the winner Christine Flanagan with 30pts well done in second place was Barry Butterworth with 27pts. Whilst writing this I have just be told the very sad news that our Captain from 2011/2012 Roy Herbert as passed way. Roy was a great society man and will be missed by everyone in the society. We also send our condolences to his wife Linda and all is family. Roy we will miss you my friend. The Photo is of Roy enjoying a round with the society.

accounts everyone had a very enjoyable day. The winner of the Gold Division was the ever consistent David McSweeney with 31 points who just pipped one of the Man Utd fans who actually comes from Manchester, Ian Fogerty on C/B. In third place with 28 points was Suffolk boy Rod Day. In the Silver Division another close finish with Yorkshireman Brian Airey just pipping Lancastrian Dave Tupman on C/B on 31 points. In 3rd place was Brummie Ray Lee with 30 points. The Best Guest was Mark Brooks and the winner of the “Roy” for the most shots played was Chris Nield who got his value for money. The nearest the Pin winners were, Brian Airey, Mark Brooks and David Hayward and young buck Ryan Rogers who both got birdies. This leads us on the 2’s competition with David and Ryan sharing the very healthy “roll-over” pot between them. After the game the players returned to the society base at the Quesada Country Club for the presentations, a drink or two and a tasty hot and cold buffet kindly provided by mine hosts David and Anita. The final game of 2014 is at Altorreal on Wednesday 17 December. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.
QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE - LO ROMERO Match 3. This is the important match of the season being the middle game. Will San Miguel A be able to hold their position at number one without playing in this game. Obviously San Miguel B will be looking to overtake with a big score, but of course this is the pivotal match for the whole league. With this intriguing format we shall see at the end of the game what unfolds. First tee was at 10.32, this was going to be a long drawn out first tee as there was no 1st and 10th or shotgun start so it was going to take an hour to clear the first tee from start to finish. Administration at the course reared its usual ugly head as the left hand never seems to know what the right hand is doing. Never mind, with the cold wind blowing and the sun starting to come out we were set for a good days golf. The course looked in excellent condition as normal which the players reported back as being just so. At the end of the day the scores somewhat denied a good days golf in places and as you will see from the results San
Miguel A managed to hold off everybody without playing this match. We shall see what happens at the end of the season. Our hosts back in Quesada was The Sportsman’s new Clubhouse at The Galleon Bar with Tracey, mine hostess, serving an excellent chilli con carne which everybody enjoyed. Many thanks to her and her staff for their hospitality and providing wine for the nearest the pins. 180´s: Peter Ayres x 2 (Porter House), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov (Meerkats), Mike Smith (Breakaways) Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Matt Cummins (Pint Depot Kings) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) Highest finish this week 120 Pat Abrams (Meerkats) Hub Meerkats and Breakaways Bears continue unbeaten after both enjoyed decent home victories this week. Hot on the heels of the Kats are the Hyenas who somehow gave the Jackals a pounding even with a couple of regulars missing. Tracy Simpson´s Jaguars keep in touch with Breakaways despite dropping a point to the unpredictable Misfits but surprise surprise their next league game is entertaining the Bears. Should be quite a tussle in the re-arranged Junction throw. This week sees the second round of the KO Cup and the new KO Handicap Plate. Cup holders Meerkats host Busters, a repeat of last season´s final whilst Division 2 table toppers Breakaways visit Division 1 Gogarty´s. Junction Jackals have a tricky tie at Que Pasa where they face the Kestrels. In the Plate, for teams defeated in the first round, Division 1 Eagles travel down to Los Dolses and the Sporting Life venue of the Misfits. The home side will start 2-0 up in the first of 7 legs competition and with some decent fire power the Misfits could well find themselves in the next round. Busters suffered consecutive 7-5 defeats this week after their trip to Que Pasa Eagles. In fact the Playa Flamenca outfit have only gained one point from their last 5 league fixtures plus a lone victory in 7 courtesy of the KO Cup, a surprisingly statistic considering their boast Mark Filer, Peter O´Rourke and Paul Dowington in their line up. A complete mystery! Eagle Jim Storey D15 opened the hosts account after three figure scores from Mel Bettell and Kevin Wood, Dowington responding with 120. Busters´ girls levelled via Babs Warren on D6, well supported by Shirley Roberts 105 and Irene Russell 114. The home side took the next two, Bettell figuring again with 125, Wood 100 and D20 second arrow. Dowington pulled his side back into the game on D16, with one pair left before the break.
Paul and Julie Hallett, Busters Licensees The formidable partnership of Stuart Clark and Den Hall had throw against Filer and Russell, Hall recording a 140. Busters´ response was a ton from Russell, 2x100 from Filer plus D2 for 3 apiece at half time. Dowington gave the visitors the lead for the first time on D6 only to lose it again via the efforts of Jim Waddell taking out 61 in 3 despite a Warren ton. Filer made it all square in his usual stylish manner with 2x100 a 140 with D8 and D10 for 2-0 against Eagles captain Hall 100. At 4-5 up it looked good news for Busters, requiring just one leg with three opportunities for at least a point. O´Rourke was next posting 100 and 119, Bettell wasn’t as explosive but two doubles D9 and D10 made it all square. Clark´s 2x100, D10 and D16 was too much for Russell as the Eagles eased back into the lead 6-5. A massive 160 from Wood in the last took the wind out of Robert´s sails, as Wood continued the advantage wining in two straight on D10 and D6 for a narrow victory. Meerkats stumbled their way to victory at home to Gogarty´s, two of their players enjoying the rain in the UK. It was yet another lack lustre performance from the current league champions, how long before losing their unbeaten run is anybody´s guess. Gogarty´s stalwart Ernie Wilson gave the La Zenia visitors an early lead on D20, which was wiped out next leg by Lee Maiden on D4 after Pat Abrams 85,140 and Paul Durrant 99 had set up the finish. Alan Ostrowski 120 and D15 made it 2-1 after the triples. Wilson teamed up with John Williams in the first pair to face Abrams and Trevor Scammell, Williams promptly reducing the deficit on D8. Maiden made it 3 for the Kats on D20, Durrant contributing a ton, leaving Ostrowski 81,85 and Todd D20 to complete the first half 4-2. Danas Bobinas D3 and D16 increased the lead, Abrams ensuring the point for the hosts with an excellent 120 out (S29,T20,D20) and then D10 despite Williams concerted efforts. Gogarty´s captain Steve Wood was next playing the ever improving Ostrowski. The Pole could only muster 95 against a pumped up Wood, who recorded a 140 and D18 to take the first. Scores was level in the second, but it was the captain who made the double, this time on D10 for 2-0. His victory roar must have been heard back in La Zenia frightening the young Ostrowski and many of his elder Kats! Durrant composed himself after being scared to death by Wood, to take out a below par Kevin Fitzpatrick 2-0 on D6 and D1 after 135,100, for the match. Wilson enjoyed a fine 97 out in the next (T19,D20) but not sufficient as Todd recorded 3x95,97,133 and D16 twice in the three leg encounter. Maiden wrapped up the evening blitzing the undeserving Gail Todd 100,140,D16 then 95,100,85,95,D10,D10 in two darts for 9-3 and both points. Some poor finishing by Breakaways nearly cost them the match playing their most Royals the Queens of Pint Depot. Some excellent scoring from Del Lister, Mike Douglas and Sarah Simpson were wasted as the Queens made up a 300 point deficit neither side able to finish. Simpson eventually showed the way. Ivan Jones 2x100 gave the Breakaways a lead in excess of 200 points but yet again finishing eluded them, this time however they paid the price via Rachael

Broadhead on D3. Douglas made it 2-1 for the hosts on D5, the pairs to play. Marie Dunne´s efforts in the scoring department didn’t count as Jones increased the lead to 3-1. It was Douglas again on D2 for the second pairs, Queens sitting on 48 but not having the opportunity of converting the points. Good scoring from Alan Strong and Paul Lear the latter nailing D10 in the first pairs giving the Bears a commanding 5-1 advantage that could have been so different. Dunne and Lister traded 125s in a superb leg, both missing D18, Lister finally taking out D2 for at least a match draw. Margaret Griffiths was always chasing Simpson in the next, but still managed to leave a double, her opponent completing the 501 after 85,140 and D5 to take the match. Debbie Wright didn’t take her chances playing a consistent Jones, the Bear making it 8 for the hosts. Lorraine Cox showed how the Royals should be playing consistently hitting high scores and completing the leg on D9. Douglas made it 9 for the Bears on D3 leaving Broadhead to take out a free scoring Lear for 3 legs to the Queens. Que Pasa Kestrels leap frog the Tavern Drivers after a narrow away victory. The Tavern opened up with the first two triples, before Brett Badlove got one back for Que Pasa on D6. Michelle Lane and Gilly Kirby outgunned John Dursley and Ralph Weatherby, Kirby finding her first arrow in D11. Two more victories followed from the Tavern giving them a 4-2 advantage at half time. A complete turn round followed after the break Harvey Kane 98,85,D1, Michelle Lane D6 and Chris Miles D16 taking the score to 5-4. Justin Hepburn levelled for the Tavern against an unlucky Kirby, leaving two legs remaining. Alan Preston gave the Kestrels the lead and a point leaving Badlove the opportunity of taking the honours on D16 and match against Zak Green. Hyenas once again gave an impressive performance led by sometime golfer Nick Spicer. 5x100 and a 118 was his tally, well supported by Joe Miller 100,2x140, Cyril Harrison 2x100,1x135 and Joe Hawkins 100,139 plus a tasty 78 out (S18,S20,D20). Keith King was the only Jackals victor, Joe Hawkins gaining the 7th and winning leg for 2 points.
Gogarty’s hotshots, Gail Todd and Cynthia Jevons Junction Jaguars retain second spot after a nail biter to Sporting Life. Dee Green took the first for the visitors John Ashworth levelling on D19. Angie Craggs tidied up 55 using S19,D18, to complete the triples. Lucy Maiden found D15 for 1-3, followed by D2 from Simone de Lacy. Wendy Hayward´s 116 not enough as George Cane´s D7 made the score 2-4. Sonya Cooper used three darts for a fine 64 on D19 to give the hosts three legs. Hayward made it 5 for Jaguars only for Karl Cooper to take the next. Three 80 plus scores and a double from Leah Chesworth were enough to take the valuable scalp of de Lacy 101. Cane ensured the draw leaving Jo Brown and Tracy Simpson to play for the honours. In spite of a good performance from Brown it was Simpson to take the leg on D2 earning a valuable point. Porter House sit comfortably in third place enjoying a convincing victory over the Pint Depot Kings. Matt Cummins couldn’t reproduce his heroic efforts of last week but once again Gary Minor came to the Kings rescue taking their only leg in the singles against Mike Newberry. Sid Cross took out two of the first 6 legs along with 2x100, Yvonne Rouffignac D11, Peter Ayres D2, Ray Hayes D12, and Ray Sanderson D4 taking the other four legs. Captain Sanderson won the match for the Porters, winning two straight against Frankie Wieczorek hitting 2x100,100 and 140. Cross added two more tons in his two straight game, Rouffignac scoring 100,119 and 156 in her two winning legs over Martin Bynorth. A disappointing season so far for the Kings, the complete opposite for the Porters.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB
Vistabella Bowls Report
Monday found the Broncos, with an always difficult game at La Marina against The Astronauts. Although they played well and enjoyed the experience, they came away with just the one rink, although several could have gone either way. John Cleal, John Skipper and Margaret Odell 12-21. Tony Robinson, Graham Day and Graham Hicks 19-13. David Haynes, John Featherstone and Ron Odell 9-20. Jim Gracie, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 14-17. Marion Haynes, Rob Clark and John Newell 6-35. Bob Easthope, Ron Edwards and Shirley Edwards 16-20. On Wednesday in the rinks league, we had a great day at Emerald Isle. We didn’t win a rink, but it just so happened that all the participating clubs were there at the same time, so a great morning was had by one and all. The two points went to Emerald Isle Reds with 63 shots to our 39 shots. After 4 matches in this fledgling league, it's great to report that all teams have 4 points and the league is being played in the spirit it was intended to be. Friday found the Mustangs playing host to San Luis Tigers, always a jovial occasion played in great spirit with lots of fun. With the having had a real soaking yesterday and with a brisk gusting breeze, we all found a little difficulty with line and length, but as you would expect the home team adjusted more quickly. In the end the Mustangs took 5 rinks to Tiger’s 1, though several rinks were close, a morning enjoyed by all. Maxine Wright, Gary Newson and Rod Wright 19-16. Trish Elsam, Barbara Jones and Geoff Jones 17-15. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris (substituted by Eddie Thomson) 20-12. Brian Taylor, Keith Cunningham and Stew Hamill 20-13. On a lovely sunny morning it was the Lions who triumphed, winning on four rinks as well as the long game. Winning for the Ramblers were Del Gunning, Bryan Kirk, Karen Kirk 17-14. Jean Turner, Ray Emmett, Peter Dix 21-19. In between these matches we had our Christmas fun bowling on Thursday. We followed this with a lovely Christmas lunch in the restaurant. www.countrybowlsclub.com

CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY On a very stormy morning a hardy few met at Clarkes Bar with optimism to find that not only was Vistabella open for golf but that they had clear skies with no rain forecast so we spread the word as far as possible and eventually 14 of us turned up to play a stableford competition. The fairways were understandably very wet but playable and the greens very receptive and true, the wind became stronger helping to dry out the course but not helping scores. The nearest the pins went to Roy Welburn and James Campbell and the longest drive went to Martin Cunningham, unfortunately nobody managed to find the par 4 16th in 2. The overall winner with 34 points was Roy Welburn and the runner up was John Winkley with 28 points. Next week is our end of year special at Las Ramblas meet at the bar for Coffee and bacon rolls at 09:00.

CELTS CLUB DE GOLF OPEN DAY AT LA SERENA GOLF COURSE. The Celts Club de Golf once again held their monthly open day at their home course La Serena on Saturday 29th November. We had a fantastic turn out of 52 players. It was to be a field of 56 but four players were told by several weather sites that it would rain and rain with thunder and all sorts of nasty things. NADA. It turned out to be fantastic weather for playing golf. No rain, very little wind, plenty of sunshine and great company. We had some excellent scores on the day and, one or 2 of us, well! lets say we just got round but, enjoyed the company and the lovely weather. What more could you ask for. La Serena was as expected in excellent condition, Wayne and his staff are working hard to make it even better for the fore coming Seniors Tournament.
The results of the day are as follows:- (The photo is only of the winners, could not get all 52 players in) Nearest the pins. Eddie Wall. Phil Mountford. Roy Wheatley. Andy Thomas. Wim Schmitz. Cat 1 Winners. 1st Denis McCormack 39pts. 2nd Dave Cosson 36pts. 3rd Andy Thomas 33 pts. Cat 2 winners were 1st. John Lawrence 38pts 2nd Mike Hooke 36 pts. 3rd Ian Scales 36 pts. TMGS AT LAS RAMBLAS - 3 DECEMBER One this day in history in 1820Thomas Beecham – the inventor of Beecham’s pills was born and in 1894 Robert Louis Stevenson died. Today at the Marmite course which was in fairly good condition (tee boxes excluded) and the colder weather has reduce the distance the ball flies and maybe this had something to do with the fairly low scores, but then again, this is Ramblas! Only 3 of the 4 NTP’s were claimed and their reward was a sleeve of TMGS golf balls which went to John Hagen, Steve Higgins and Andrew Mills. The “Two’s” pot was won by one lucky shot on the 10th by Joe Dean who managed to sink the putt and claim the 16€ on offer. The Best Visitor was A Mills with 30 points The Silver mob struggled a little and it only needed 27 points for a very surprised Robbie Rea to claim 3rd spot. Roger Nilsen’s 30 saw him take the runners-up slot and the bragging rights in the Rea/Haubner household belong to the fairer one of the two, Olga Haubner who took the top slot with 31 points. The Gold Division was a much tighter affair and a countback saw Alan Rickers take 3rd spot with 30 points. The runners-up slot went to Steve Higgins with 32 points and Darren Hancock, playing off of 4, scored 33 points to take the top slot and best score of the day. Photo:

HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY
Mike Keveren Hi to all ,On Saturday the 29th of November, 36 golf players which included 8 guests played a Texas scramble at Las Ramblas in the Maureen Grice memorial trophy. Maureen sadly passed away last week, loving wife of one of our members Clive. All 36 players and guests from Hartlepool met at the 1st tee and toasted Maureen before Clive teed off. Mo would have been laughing at his wonderful first tee shot , not so good was it Clive! The course was in great condition , but sometimes it proved a little wet on some tees. On the day the golf was good and all enjoyed the day . The winning team was Paul Wilson , Dean Hockton , Martin Moore and Lucas Sedgie . Lucas on the day was nearest the pin, and the longest drive was Anthony Hare (guest). On returning to the Friendly Bar where we enjoyed our usual scrumptious buffet we also had a raffle for the Pink Ladies and managed to raise 1300 euro's for the .AECC, so thanks to all who took part . The day and evening was a great success and my thanks to all who arranged it . Next it's Los Colinas on the 29th of December, so get your names down on the list. Finally may I wish everyone at the Bar, and the personnel at the Leader a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2015.
By Lubbertus This week we played the Presidents Cup Individual Stableford at the Nicklaus designed. Mar Menor Golf Course on 2nd December 1014. As usual, it was difficult to fault the course with its many obstacles, traps, large bunkers and challenging water courses all providing a real test for the players. The weather was perfect, if a little chilly at first, and the course itself was in excellent condition, allowing some exceptional play and good scores. This was illustrated by the scores, with Both Kendrick Rhodes and Dave Butler finishing jointly 1st on 35 points, with Kendrick winning on countback 16 to 15. Steve Dixon finished third on a very close 34, with Andy Shuttle fourth on 31 points. A guest prize was awarded to Tony Jones who finished on a remarkable 30 points. In the nearest the Pin competition, Tony Jones won at hole 2, Steve Dixon at hole 14 and Don Martin at hole 17. No-one reached the green in 2 at the long 197 yard par 3 hole 8. Tony Jones also won the 2’s competition. Afterwards the players adjourned to the Marinasol Restaurant at Punta Prima for the congratulatory awards and a warming buffet. This is also where to go if you would like to join Happy Days, or to find out more. Just ask to speak to Steve and he will reveal all, including details of the next round at The Roda Golf Course on 16th December 2014..

ATLÉTI' STROLL PAST ELCHE AT A CANTER ELCHE CF ................................0 ATLÉTICO DE MADRID ............2
Champions Atlético Madrid came, saw nothing particularly frightening and then conquered with ease as a below par, and chronically short on confidence, Elche offered precious little resistance. Goals either side of the interval were enough for the reigning La Liga champions who were the better side throughout. In truth, the game really was nothing to write home about and even the usually energetic Elche supporters were strangely subdued. The best moment of a largely uninspiring first half came on seventeen minutes and it was reminiscent of Barcelona at their very best. Arda Turan and the outstanding Koke exchanged short, sharp passes with Siqueira who then found the bearded Turk – looking suspiciously offside – with a similar ball. Two touches later the ball arrived at the feet of José María Giménez who hammered a shot past a helpless Tyton in the Elche goal; the brute force of his finish contrasting starkly with the subtlety of the build up. Going behind failed to raise Elche from their slumbers and the men from the Vicente Calderón continued to dominate, albeit without really testing the home back four. In point of fact, Elche almost grabbed an unlikely equaliser when Fayçal Fajr launched a speculative effort from range that had Atléti goalkeeper Moya back pedalling into his post. With tempers fraying, particularly that of Elche striker Jonathas who squared up to Raúl Garcia, Basque referee Iñaki Garrido blew for the break at just about the right moment. On the resumption it was more of the same and Atléti took just eight minutes to secure the points. An Elche attack was easily broken up and Atléti captain Gabi flopped an exquisite through ball into the path of Mario Mandzukic who held off the half hearted attentions of David Lombán to beat Tyton a little too easily at his near post. Not long after, the visitors almost grabbed a third when Gabi burst forward only to be denied by the outstretched right leg of Tyton. Even then the Elche back four made something of a meal of tidying up after their goalkeep-
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY REPORT FOR W/E 5 DEC 14 By Mike Chapman We started the week with a 4 ball Texas Scramble which was won with a score of 59.425 by the team of John and Carole Wheeler and Rachel Leckey. As they only had 3 players their handicap allowance was 17.5% of their combined handicap compared to the normal 10% which explains the unusual final score. The highlight of the round was an eagle on the par 5 fourth hole scored by John Wheeler without any assistance from his playing partners. It was our usual weekly stableford competition on Wednesday which saw some good scores being returned to keep the handicap secretary busy. Roger Tunstall was the top scorer with 39 pts to win Category 2. Geoff Biggerstaff could only manage 3rd position despite scoring 24 pts on the back 9. The full result of the day was as follows: Cat 1. 1st Lindsay Forbes 38 pts (c/b) 2nd Phil Herrington 38 pts 3rd Dave Pulling 37 pts Cat 2. 1st Roger Tunstall 39 pts 2nd Mike Chapman 37 pts 3rd Geoff Biggerstaff 36 pts 2's Club: Mike Frankish, John Robertson, Jan Svendsen and Carole Wheeler We were short on numbers on Friday as 8 of our members were representing the Club in our Vega Baja league match at El Valle. The result will be included in next weeks report. The remaining members contested a Reverse 6x6x6 with three scores counting on the first 6 holes, two on the second 6 and just one on the last 6 holes. Scoring was difficult in the cold and damp conditions. The winning team with a lower than average score of 76 pts were Allen and Joyce McClusky, Norman Page and Barry Holtham.
er. A swerving, dipping Victor Rodriguez shot which flew just wide and an Enzo Roco header that Tiago hooked out were the best Elche could come up with as they chased the game. At the other end, the introduction of flying Frenchman Antoine Griezmann, a summer signing from Real Sociedad, caused all kinds of defensive difficulties for Elche who somehow kept the score down. In the end it was all too simple for Atléti who probably won't help themselves to an easier three points on their travels all season. For Elche the head scratching after yet another disappointing defeat looks set to continue. Manager Fran Escribá now has his work cut out
lifting the flagging spirits of his squad who, with this defeat, slump to rock bottom of the table. NAIL BITING BUT DAYA KEEPS UNBEATEN RUN INTACT Daya Nueva 1 Promesas Elche 0 Alicante Cadetes 2A After last week's disappointing draw Daya needed a positive result to maintain their place at the top. The home side started the game like a runaway train forcing the visitors deep into their own half. Elche did manage a counter attack on 5 minutes but from the resulting corner Daya cleared comfortably. The visitors were coming more into the game as the half wore on, giving Daya plenty to think about. With 20 minutes gone Daya were now feeling the pressure, although a terrific strike followIng a Francisco free kick produced a great save by the Elche keeper on 22 minutes. It was Daya now turning the screw in a pulsating game of football. On 37 minutes Angel jinked his way into the Elche penalty area only to see his shot well saved by the keeper, who had certainly been the busier of the two keepers. So 0 - 0 at the break with Daya having had just the best of the half. The second half was just minutes old when Marcos had the chance of the match so far but blasted his shot so high over the bar that the ball came down with ice on it ! At least it gave Daya a boost and a well worked free kick on 47 minutes saw the home side go close again. On 52 minutes Marcos managed to blast the ball over the bar yet again, but it was all Daya now. Yet another good save from the visitors' keeper, this time from a fierce Hugo shot on 56 minutes. Would Daya pay dearly for not finding the back of the net ? On 60 minutes it was Hugo's turn to miss a good chance when his shot flashed just wide of the post. Elche we're finding it impossible to get out of their half and on 60 minutes Angel broke the deadlock with a superb left footed strike. Although Daya continued to keep Elche penned in their own half, poor shooting and great goal keeping meant it was just the one goal in it at the final whistle. It was a fantastic game with both sets of players performing well above what might be expected at this level. The match official also played his part, he handled the game superbly. No man of the match just a great all round team performance. Daya Dave, Team Sponsor: Segurlab
