onsidered a British institution, the appeal of the “pub” has seen a considerable decline across the UK for some time. In fact, it is claimed that in the UK, since the dawn of the millennium, around a thousand pubs have closed down each year, many of the centrepieces of social life now standing as a decaying symbol of the communities that once thrived. In fact, on ITV on Thursday of this week, Jonathan Maitland investigates the “danger” of losing your local. Reporting how Britain's pubs support

nearly a million jobs, inject an average of 80,000 pounds into their local economy each year and are still considered cornerstones of the community. However, with the figure now standing at an estimated 30 pub closures nationwide each week, this national tradition seems to be under threat, thus asking the question, “Can the great British boozer bounce back?” As many a UK resident expatriated to Spain in search for a better life, so many of our institutions and businesses followed, with British shops selling everything from furniture to fashion, service and trades people offering their skills to growing communities Continued on Page 2

over here, newspaper and radio stations of course, and a selection of bars and restaurants acting as social hubs for our new found groups of friends, colleagues and associates. Now, it seems that same decay is setting in here, caused by a number of factors. A visit to any known centre point of social life shows how dramatic and risky the business of operating a bar or restaurant can be, apparent due to the number of bars closing down. Throughout the summer, one of the issues affecting some bars was the risk of fines for emitting live music. Although the licensing requirements played a big part, with some of the affected businesses not having the appropriate permits for live performances. That didn´t detract from the fact that many of the clientele of the bars demanded live entertainment, and so with many customers feeling let down, it could be arguable that many of them might no longer subscribe to a quieter form of pub life. Some think that the smoking ban has been the downfall of the local bar, but statistics prove otherwise in Spain, with most of the previous bar-based smokers opting to give up smoking, rather than the bar, others still continuing by going outside. In fact, there are still many Spanish bars which are packed to the rafters as frequently as before, with a smoke-free zone inside, and those who chose to partake crowding around small gardens or doorways. An official report published in May said that consumers in Spain spend more than 7 billion euro on tobacco products and more than 3 billion euro on alcohol each year, and despite the country-wide smoking ban in certain areas, Spain is still in the top 5 countries of smokers, with cigarette consumption actually increasing, as each smoker now uses 2,462 cigarettes (or equivalent) per year, whereas the average spent on alcohol was 684 euro per person, an increase of 1.30%, showing how both have increased. The financial situation has of course left many with less disposable income, perhaps more choosing to buy alcohol at hugely discounted rates in supermarkets for home consumption, rather than the seemingly inflated price at a bar, where the expenses of providing the service are seldom considered. There are not as many ex-pats here to visit the numerous bars on offer of course. Based on the closing data for last year´s census, the registered population of Spain decreased by 404,619 people in 2013, now standing at 46.7 million people, a loss of almost 3 million people in 10 years. Of the immigrant population, the Institute of National Statistics revealed that, with the exception of the Chinese, all foreign national groups are decreasing, the biggest fall being within the British population, with 87,000 registered Brits having left last year. The Valencia region was hardest hit by the decline, with 118,000 for-

eigners having left, some 29% of the entire expatriate total. Of course we shall have to wait and see how the population figure is presented at the end of this year, but we already know that foreigners are returning, as we reported in August, when Orihuela´s Councillor for International Residents, Martina Scheurer, explained how, despite Orihuela losing residents from the official figures at the end of 2013, the numbers which will be presented to the National Statistics Institute for this year had already surpassed the loss, with the official number of residents in the coastal zone standing at 35,599, more than before the clean up was carried out. Of that figure, 18,177, more than half, are British citizens, although there are a total of 71 nationalities represented. Within the Spanish population, around 3,000 people were wiped off the census, but 4,504 new people have registered as being residents. We have to wait to see how the figures for Torrevieja are presented, as they were at risk of having to wipe even more off their census, under the threat that the size of the reduction could also mean a downgrade in the status of the municipality. Despite all of these facts, figures, questions and suggestions, one thing still remains clear. Bars and restaurants are continuing to close their doors at an alarming rate. If the question is simply, “Can the great British boozer in Spain bounce back?” then the answer is “yes”, but their future lies in our hands. Picking just one of the many expat pockets in the area, there was a time, not too long ago, when, in Cabo Roig, good pubs and bars, fine cuisine and restaurants were aplenty, as were customers, who flocked to the area in droves to enjoy an afternoon or an evening out. Even during December and January the ‘strip’ was well supported with only the occasional establishment closing during the
winter months, mostly through choice. But even those would reopen after Christmas, usually in time for the much lauded ‘St Patrick’s day’ celebrations held in mid February. Now though, as the economic conditions remain ‘fragile’ the situation has been turned on its head with more bars closed for the winter than remain open, many of which will continue to be so until a new owner or proprietor can be found. Even those ‘long established concerns ’ many thought to have ‘rock solid customer bases’ are struggling, only managing to survive by virtue of cut price offers or by reducing their staff numbers or trading days. Indeed of the 58 bars and restaurants listed on the local website caboroigspain.eu, which was last updated in November 2013, only 19 remain open, although a small number of others have already changed hands. And the situation is much the same in similar urbanizations throughout the region. So the message is quite simple, if we don´t use our local facilities, amenities, businesses, bars and restaurants, we are each responsible for their demise. Sure it might be more convenient to head off to one of the larger multi-use centres where we can do our shopping, have a bite to eat, a few drinks and enjoy the entertainment laid on, all in one hit, but all the while that we continue to use these commercial Goliaths, the heartbeat of our local communities is fading away, some quite possibly beyond resuscitation. This Christmas and New Year we should all beat the drum for our local community tradesfolk,....Start using your local bars, businesses and restaurants before it is too late. Here on the Costa Blanca they are the heartbeat of the expatriate community. Do your bit NOW to “support your local”, and its revival will not be too far away.

TORRY CHRISTMAS KICKS OFF WITH CAROLS IN THE SQUARE
Once again the Annual Celebration of Carols in the Square brought plenty of color and Christmas cheer to Torrevieja’s Plaza de la Constitución on Friday evening. Directed by Julie Schofield, the Phoenix Band, composed mainly of retired expatriates, were ‘note perfect’ as they led over five hundred participants from across the region, many dressed in traditional Santa hats, through a dozen of the season’s most popular festive hymns. The XII Edition of this unique concert, was held, as in previous years, on the front steps of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and was attended by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, together
with councilors Joaquín Albaladejo, Rosario Martinez and Luis María Pizana. They were accompanied by a choir composed of more than a hundred choristers made up of many different nationalities. This year also saw, for the very first time, the participation of the Torrevieja Municipal School Choir, under the direction of Selena Cansino. On completion of the concert many of the audience moved inside the church where they celebrated the Novena in honor of the Immaculate Conception, which was attended by several priests from a variety of nationalities and religious orders.

LIGHTS OUT Businesses in certain areas of Torrevieja centre have raised concerns over the lack of Christmas illuminations adorning the streets. The town hall responding by admitting that there had been a “slight delay” of a few days in arranging the contract for the lights. Meanwhile, many of the surrounding urbanisations will no doubt be forgotten once again, despite contributing to the municipal funds.
CLEAN PRINCESS Infanta Cristina is set to be cleared of any criminal liability in a case in which she was accused of having profited from the alleged embezzlement of her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin. The reason for her to have a clear name lies in her handing over the equivalent in the proceeds of the alleged crime, 600,000 euro, which, according to her lawyer, will “extinguish her civil and criminal responsibility”.

COASTAL TRAIN PLANS REVISITED
The Spanish government may revive the proposed “Tren de la Costa” investment program that would see the rail network expanded through parts of the Costa Blanca. The Ministry of Infrastructure has submitted plans for a feasibility study to the Ministry of Development that would investigate the plans after they were shelved due to the economic crisis. The cost for the Valencia to Alicante network has also been reduced to just 955 million euro, after the first planned budget of just over a billion euro rose to 1.3 billion when formally introduced in 2007. The plan has been split into four key stages, the most exciting perhaps being stage 3, which would include a rail connection to Alicante-Elche airport in the town of El Altet, covering the provincial capital of Alicante, and continuing north to Benidorm. Parts of the tram network would be modernised in the north of the Alicante province, and some of the proposed routes would be developed along single line sections, with enough space for them to be developed into two-line sections in the future. Stage 1 covers Gandia to Oliva, a 10.19 kilometres single line section of track, with trains capable of travelling at between 100 and 140 kilometres per hour, with new stations at Gandia Hospital, Bellreguard and, provisionally, Oliva. Stage 2 is from Oliva to Dénia, including the excavation of
the routes in Oliva, and a 23.91 kilometre single line section, speeds the same as in stage 1, with new stations built at Oliva, El Verger, Ondara and an intermodal station in Dénia. Stage 3 is the El Altet to Benidorm route, via Alicante, which is also the most expensive, swallowing up over a third of the total budget, at a cost of almost 370 million euro. The plan is for 50.13 kilometres of high speed, single line track, running through a 1.86 kilometre tunnel, and an additional station at El Campello . The final stage, Stage 4, would see the improvement to the TRAM network between Dénia and Benidorm, including the electrification of Linea 9, converting the track to a European standard gauge, and improving the includes along the route, with maximum running speeds of 84.4 kilometres per hour. Although the plans are exciting for many who might wish to travel high speed to Benidorm or the airport, there will be considerable disruption to the land and the environment in order to complete the network, and as they have already been in consideration for many years, whilst facing numerous knockbacks, whether the train network is realised remains to be seen, but the fact that the plans are being reconsidered is seen as a positive move by many, showing not only a stability in the country, but a commitment to a new area of the Costa Blanca.

LORENTE CALLED TO COURT IN CORRUPTION CASE
Former mayor of Orihuela, Mónica Lorente of the Partido Popular, will appear in court on the 13th of February, to give evidence in the a case in which the prosecution accuses her of a crime of influence peddling. The trial is in connection with the award for municipal waste management, in which Lorente acted as an “intermediary” between the former President of the Alicante provincial government, José Joaquin Ripoll, and Orihuela businessman, Ángel Fenoll, himself found guilty of corruption, and in this case Lorente acted “in the interests of economic favour” of Fenoll, according to the prosecution. The case is built around the location of a waste management plant and the subsequent relocation which coincided with land previously purchased by Fenoll.
The judge considered that the reports filed by the police and the prosecutor reveal sufficient evidence of the participation by Mónica Lorente in the events under investigation either “directly or collaterally”, and so she is called to testify at 10:00 on the 13th of February.

The councillor has this week discovered that the Economic and Financial Affairs Council, more commonly known as ECOFIN, are looking for projects which require funding in excess of one million euro which will be of socio and community benefit. As one of the oldest configurations of the Council of the European Union, composed of the economics and finance ministers of the 28 European Union member states, as well as Budget Ministers, the chance of funding being granted is quite slim, on account of the number of applications they are likely to receive. As the deadline for applications was extended by a week, Scheurer has submitted a request for funding for not only the construction of a new auditorium, but also for furnishing and equipping the centre. At the same time, the councillor has also submitted numerous other proposals, in the hope that the Orihuela Costa may benefit in some way. Of course with neighbouring Torrevieja already having an auditorium which stands mostly unused, just 10 kilometres away, that might go against the Orihuela Costa plan, and although it may well be a slim chance that the approval will be granted, it is at least some chance that the auditorium might be built at not at the expense of the tax payer, a chance which has never previously been explored.
Torrevieja Los Verdes have criticized the council for a lack of maintenance at the newly opened park Ilo Ilo, located in the lower area of the Los Balcones. A spokesman for the Green Party said that the government team has carried out no maintenance since the park was first opened letting weeds and dirt accumulate and grow.

SPANISH NURSES HUNTED BY THE NHS Spanish nurses are being hunted down in the workplace, as a zealous recruitment drive in the UK as seeing them targeted with offers for work in the UK NHS. The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed that a trip by three members of the hospital to Madrid last month has resulted in five new nurses being recruited for the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital. The reason for the Spanish recruitment campaign is said to be due to a struggle to fill nursing positions locally, and so a Human Resources Manager, accompanied by two nurse recruiters, jetted off to Spain, where they interviewed just 8 candidates, offering 5 of them a new job in the New Year. With the offer of a relocation package that includes
on-site accommodation, rotational experience around the hospital and in community and a training programme, as well as an attractive salary, it seems like the loss to the Spanish healthcare system is nothing but a gain to the NHS. Earlier this year, the CHFT admitted that it needed around 70 full time nurses to meet the minimum staffing requirement at their hospitals, with staffing level figures revealing shortages in more than half the wards at the hospitals, with countless shifts in October seeing too few nurses available to cover the shifts determined by NHS guidelines. The Trust has said that they hope to try to recruit more nurses locally, and have not ruled out another head-hunting trip to Spain soon.
Despite being challenged by a security watchman from a nearby construction site three men managed to walk out of Madrid’s Galería Puerta de Alcalá in the early hours of Thursday carrying over 70 paintings worth an estimated €600,000. The thieves entered the gallery after breaking into an adjacent bar before deactivating the alarm. The guard said that he saw the men walking out with paintings in their arms and went over to ask them some questions, but did not suspect that they were burglars. “We have to get an early start to put them on display in another gallery,” they said.

VODAPHONE MERGER TO COST 1000 JOBS
SOLAR POWER COMING TO ELCHE
Vodafone Spain is preparing to lay off 1,000 workers over the coming months as a result of its acquisition of Spanish cable provider Ono earlier this year. The combined workforce of the two companies currently stands at around 6,000, with Vodafone accounting for 3,500 employees and Ono the remaining 2,500. A Vodafone spokesman confirmed that the aim was to complete the restructuring process by the end of the first quarter of 2015, but the size of the collective dismissal could lead to problems with unions and a possible court challenge.
Elche is to provide the home to Spain´s latest photovoltaic solar power plant. The 250 megawatt generating power house, more than double the original 100 megawatt planned plant, will be constructed in spring at Finca de la Marquesa, on the Elche to El Altet road. The 250,000 solar panels will cover a land area of 100 hectares and the plant will provide power to about 20,000 families, expected to be distributed through the local area. As part of the ongoing commitment to renewable energies, the creation of the site will prevent 30,000 tons of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere. The 250 million euro investment for the scheme will be provided by the private sector, with “various” foreign funds involved in the scheme, including investment from China. The five-phase construction is expected to be completed by 2020.
SPAIN’S NEW ROYAL PORTRAIT It took 20 years to complete but Artist Antonio Lopez finally unveiled a portrait of the Spanish royal family at the Royal Palace in Madrid last week. The life-size canvas shows former King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia with their children, King Felipe VI and Princesses Elena and Christina. However the painter hasn't quite caught up with the royal family's most recent changes, so Queen Letizia doesn't feature.
CARREFOUR ORDERED TO PAY COMPENSATION Carrefour has been ordered to pay 12,000 euro in compensation to a family after private photographs were displayed on the screen saver returned to the store after the clients decided they didn´t want it.
Taking advantage of the right to return goods, the client took the computer back and obtained a refund. The computer was then put on display to be sold at a reduced rate, but was seen to display the photographs of a child in the family home, taken by the family and left on the computer. The company had said that they would format the hard drive before reselling the computer, which they did not do. The district court ordered Carrefour to pay the 12,000 euro in compensation to the complainant for violation of their right to privacy, considering that without the permission of those affected, they had exposed the image of a child and at home . However, the Court of Cádiz issued a correction and reduced the compensation to 300 euro, because the court believed that “by not erasing the pictures before returning the computer, trusting that were to be erased by the respondent company”, they had also contributed to the error. Now, the Supreme Court has annulled that judgment, and determined that the applicant must collect the initially fixed compensation of 12,000 euro, because “the company failed to give any indication that the actions of appellant had contributed to cause the result”.

When the centre was first open, the Partido Popular government of Torrevieja were critical of their PP colleagues in neighbouring Orihuela, on account of the threat to local trade. Shops in the centre of Torrevieja had already suffered from the opening of the Habaneras Centre, and the Zenia Boulevard was seen as a massive threat to those who remained. The greens feel that the city council should at least “refrain” from “institutionally advertising” and promoting the “benefits of the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre”, and have requested clarification from the government as to why it has taken such an advertising initiative for the Zenia Boulevard that can harm both trade and the economy of our town at a time of such hardship and difficulties.
ARE YOU TUNED IN? As we are in the last month of the year, the Spanish Government has issued a reminder that the failure to retune televisions receiving Spanish national terrestrial TV broadcasts must undergo a re-tune, or some channels will be lost at the end of this month. It is believed that the Alicante province is one of the worst affected areas in terms of the need to retune, with some 50,000 buildings equipped with singlechannel or programmable units that must be adjusted “as soon as possible”, in order to receive the new frequencies. This adaptation more than 1 million people across Alicante, 57% of the population, with the residents of the municipalities of Alicante and Torrevieja being the worst affected. With only a limited number of installation engineers approved by the government to carry out the work, time is fast running out before the switch off on the 31st of December. As previously reported, communal buildings are able to obtain a grant for the work, but only if the criteria determined by the government is met. A number of channels have displayed a red warning symbol on screen since the new frequencies became available in October, there are the channels which will be switched off, and so need to be re-tuned.
Owners of normal domestic television receivers can simply re-tune their TV themselves via a channel scan on the menu of the television; it is those who are connected to unaltered communal systems who will be at risk of losing the channels. The reason for the move was to make way for faster mobile phone communications via the 4G, network, and so the frequencies had to be cleared and tidied up to make a better use of those available. More information can be obtained from the official website set up by the government, www.televisiondigital.es, where a list of authorised engineers is also available.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
No More ‘Tossers’ in Tossa del Mar A recent news item about seven British police officers who were arrested for “brawling” during a stag weekend in Vilnius, Lithuania caught my eye this week. Photographs were published on the social networks showing the officers stumbling and bloodied as they were arrested, handcuffed and dispatched to the local police station. I suspect that many readers’ views on stag and hen parties will rest upon two things; firstly upon their age, and secondly whether or not they have been invited to one recently. Personally, I am open-minded about the whole thing. On the face of it, having a really good night out to celebrate the last days of ‘freedom’ before getting ‘hitched’ seems like a good idea. Whilst I have experienced a few stag parties on various levels of disorder in the past, I really have no experience of what ‘hens’ really do get up to, but I can guess. However, encouraging the prospective bridegroom, in an orgy of male bonding, to become completely comatose on cheap booze before shaving his nether regions and putting him on the overnight ferry to Rotterdam does seem a little unkind, and particularly when the wedding had to be postponed because of his late arrival at church two days later with a broken arm. No, this sad tale really did happen to a friend of ours a few years ago, and the eventual marriage is still recovering from this very shaky start. “We’re having no more it,” the good people of Tossa del Mar, in Spain’s Costa Brava, have declared. This town has suffered so much from the ‘fun’ of thoughtless partygoers that they have declared itself
to be a ‘stag and hen free zone’, requiring would be partygoers to apply for a licence, which will never actually be granted because of traditional Spanish bureaucracy, as well as imposing strict fines if revellers are having too much fun. Sadly, this mainly British cultural tradition also seems to be unpopular in Barcelona, Vilnius, Prague… and Bournemouth. Yes, this traditional seaside town of the elderly and language students also has had more than enough, and has recently announced that it is demolishing some of its more popular ‘stag and hen’ hotels to make way for more classy tourists. Psychologically speaking, and if I switch off basic common sense for a moment, I can understand the need for a final ‘blow out’, literally speaking, before the constraints of marriage sets in. It can be an opportunity for a great time with friends, and is a wonderful contrast to the formal set piece performance of meringue dresses and penguin suits that adorns the average wedding. However, maybe now is the time to consider international relations, particularly since the UK seems to have far fewer friends nowadays. I recall visiting Prague a couple of years ago. We checked into a hotel that we had visited a few years earlier and where we remember being made very welcome. This time, the atmosphere was much cooler and it was over a drink later in the evening when I asked the duty manager, whom I remembered from the previous visit, what had changed. He made it clear that he no longer liked or welcomed British tourists to the city. His main complaint was the vast numbers of revellers visiting his city at weekends. “They have no interest in beauty or tradition; all they want to do is get drunk and have sex with anyone,” he complained. Later that evening, I agreed with him after watching several groups of partygoers vomiting their way through the streets of this beautiful city. The hotel manager certainly had a point, and two days later we also fled on a train to Bratislava in Slovakia to escape the partying mobs. Now, back to the ancient and beautiful town of Tossa del Mar, which quaintly translates into ‘coughing by the sea’. As one rather large (British) resident succinctly put it on television, in a broad Yorkshire
accent, “They’ll be no more ‘tossers’ in Tossa del Mar’. I could have hugged the lady for her sincerity and passion. I am assuming that by using the word ‘tosser’ she was using the Spanish verb, tosser, which is Spanish for ‘medicine’, or ‘toss’ meaning ‘cough’, which is my feeble excuse for using a such a doubtful title for this story. Clearly, this Yorkshire lady was taking the lead in her attempts to learn Spanish, as well as considering the health benefits to prospective tourists. I am sure that most stag and hen parties are great fun, but since the participants are clearly not interested in historical sites, museums or fine wines and local food, maybe I could suggest a couple of nights in Blackpool or Skegness instead? After a few pints, it would feel more or less the same, but would be much cheaper and not cause such a strain on international relations. Maybe the British police officers arrested in Lithuania could bear this in mind next time? “It’s never too late to get a Book Deal!” Local author Percy Chattey, Hondon de los Frailes, is living proof that you can still achieve your dreams even in your later years. Percy’s dream of getting his books published has just come true! Now approaching 80 years old, Percy is pleased to announce that his eBook and Pinnacle Award winning autobiography “Blitz & Pieces: The True Story of How a Six Year Old Survived the London Blitz” has now secured a hardback publishing and promotions deal. Plus, the same London Publisher could take on three of his other thriller novels, such as “Politically Incorrect” and “The Black Venus”. In the last two years Percy has found renewed joy in his passion for writing murder mystery thrillers amid the mountainous tranquil of the Hondon Valley. He has completed six so far. However, as a child of the war, he also wanted to document his WWII memoirs. What started off as a few amusing and vivid anecdotes to tell his grandchildren has now become a jam-packed autobiogra-
phy about his fearful cockney childhood during the infamous London Blitz. He also gives a first-hand account of the hardships in post-war Britain, paints a stark portrait of his army days and writes candidly about East End business life. “Blitz and Pieces” is a compelling read which reflects both the personal misery and joy of a longgone life most of us know very little about these days. The stories feel real, are often funny but also a thought-provoking history lesson of the “olden days” and all told in Percy’s normal absorbing and expressive style. Percy, with his cockney charm and a deserved smile says: “Having a book deal, especially after all these years, really is a dream come true. It feels great that my passion for telling stories has finally been recognised. It makes all that hard work and dedication worthwhile.” Percy is proud to be the only author to win three NABE Pinnacle Book Achievement Awards in its 26 year history. Percy’s latest thriller “WatchIt Too!” will be released in winter. The release date for the hardback version of “Blitz and Pieces” is to be decided but for now all Percy’s thrillers and books are still available as Kindle eBooks or as paperbacks via Amazon.co.uk or a search for “percy chattey books”. AUSCHWITZ LAUNCHES VIRTUAL TOUR Although the historic significance may tell a harrowing story, the Auschwitz Museum can now be visited from the comfort of your own home, as the museum has just launched a 360-degree virtual tour of one of the most symbolic concentration camps ever to exist.
Though many thousands suffered the atrocities of the Nazi regime, the museum hope that the tour will keep the memory of those who suffered alive, following one of the worst genocides humanity has ever inflicted. The museum has been built on witness testament and historic accounts from archived documents from the prison, and works of art created by some of the prisoners. Now, with the virtual tour available on the internet, visitors have the chance to be absorbed in the visual imagery of the museum, though not with the true emotions felt by those who were there, through what museum director Dr. Piotr Ma Cywinski describes as an “educational project”, created from “comprehensive historical information with panoramic photographs”. Some of the areas on the virtual tour go deeper into the history than actual visitors
to the site can go, as many areas are not open to the public. Dr. Piort believes that a visit via the virtual tour can help those coming to the real museum plan their trip, but also explains how “many people will never have the opportunity to experience in person the real Auschwitz, so a virtual tour is a unique opportunity to approach the actual experience of the former camp”. The new virtual tour of the AuschwitzBirkenau Memorial includes over 200 high-quality panoramic photographs. The 360 degree images present the authentic sites and buildings of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, complete with historical descriptions, dozens of witness accounts, archival documents and photographs, artworks created by the prisoners, and objects related to the history of the camp. The tour is available at the museum website, www.auschwitz.org.

LOS DOLSES BUTCHERS GETTING YOU REA DY FOR CHRISTMAS
Crescendo’s Christmas concert at El Paraiso on Sunday 7th December certainly put a “tingle in our fingers and a tingle in our toes” to paraphrase words from the rendition of the ‘The Rhythm of Life’. The winter sun shone on the ladies red sparkling jackets adding yet more tingles to the jingles. Most songs contained a message of hope, joy or peace – the best of Christmas gifts. Twelve songs were interspersed with a duet, two solos and the audience joining in the Christmas carols. Lesley Rolls entered after the interval, wearing her pyjamas and pink bows in her hair searching for “two front teeth” and wondering why “Mummy was seen kissing Santa Claus”, which created a sense of the fun element of Christmas. The whole choir wish all their friends and supporters a Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year. More information at crescendo-choir.com

1900 Photo Album Acquired By Motor Museum Trust by Nick Ireland The National Motor Museum Trust has acquired an important photographic album documenting the 1000 Mile Trial of 1900, a pivotal moment in motoring history which John Montagu, father of the current Lord Montagu, famously took part in. This collection of photographs, which was purchased in the Bonhams London to Brighton sale on 31st October, covers the gruelling run of early motor cars from London to Edinburgh and back by the event’s official photographer, Albert Argent Archer. This one-off event helped to change the public’s negative perception of motor cars at the turn of the century. Mandy Schaller, Curator of Photography for the National Motor Museum Trust, explains its significance. “This album of original prints by Albert Argent Archer, a very influential figure in early transport photography, is important not just because of its coverage of the 1000 Mile Trial, but also because it depicts John Montagu competing in the event with his 1899 Daimler 12hp.” John Montagu was awarded a bronze medal for his participation in the event and was one of only 35 of the original 65 entrants to finish. A passionate campaigner for the cause of the motorist, he drove his 1899 Daimler in a number of events and was part of the first all-British entry in a foreign road event - the Paris-Ostend Race. John also drove the Daimler into the House of Commons Yard, becoming the first person to do so, and gave the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, one of his first ever rides in a motor car. The Daimler was subsequently restored by the National Motor Museum, where it is now on display. The album will be archived within the Museum collection and once digitised copies of the prints will be available to purchase online at www.motoringpicturelibrary.com
The first 1,000 mile motoring trial took place in 1900

ORIHUELA COSTA IMPROVEMENTS
2013/ 2014
REVIEWING THE STORY SO FAR As we reach the end of yet another year, I thought it might be a good time to look back at some of the things we have achieved for the Orihuela Costa during my time as Councillor for the Coast. There is still a long way to go and much to be done, and of course it is not only frustrating being in a minority government, but as a serving member of the Los Verdes green party of Orihuela, I am also part of a minority group within the minority, which can make things a little harder to achieve. Harder, but not impossible. We have managed to make numerous improvements already and with a number of major projects all ready to start in the New Year, once the finances have been cleared, you will see many more improvements too. For now, on behalf of myself and the government team of Orihuela, I would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and send you good wishes for a peaceful New Year. Martina Scheurer, Cllr for the Orihuela Costa and International Residents.
ACTIONS TAKEN ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA SINCE FEBRUARY 2013 Lifeguards and Beach Accessibility As of today we have 4 accessible beaches which, during the summer months, are equipped with amphibious chairs, platform, and shaded area. The beach at La Zenia also has adapted showers for the disabled. Currently the accessible facilities on the beaches of Orihuela are better than ever and will improve again next year again. Accessibility to beaches will continue to improve in 2015
Improvements to the Public Building: In the Town Hall there have been some organizational changes that significantly improve citizen services. It was in March last year that the office of the National Police reopened, previously closed for some time before. The “Padrón” has its own office that now ensures more privacy for data processed by citizens attending. This office also now has a queueticket dispenser. The Office for International Residents is attended by an administrative employee with knowledge of English. Previously this office was only attended by the “assessor” (the personal assistant of the Councillor) and therefore very often completely closed. The tourist office has a separate entrance and the location is shared with International Resident Care to have more flexibility to cover holidays and illness of staff. The Registry is now staffed by two employees to ensure proper functioning with the new technology, to cover holidays etc. The Water Office has installed, upon my request, a queue ticket dispenser, plus an informative display. Necessary repairs such as waterproofing the roof and repairs to the air conditioning in the town hall, broken since 2012 and budgeted since 2012, were carried out. Accessibility of emergency exit and surrounding crossings have been carried out. INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS The fact that I had in my budget different allocations for infrastructure work on the Coast from previous years but never carried out, leaves me with the suspicion that on the one hand those items were approved at different plenary meetings of the previous local government of the PP but that there was no real intention to carry them out. The same way as I gave the instruction to carry these works out, the previous councillor for Infrastructure, Mr Mancebo, could have done as well. As can be: The pedestrian bridge in La Regia: Previously approved and scheduled for execution in 2012, but not previously done, until now.
Aguamarina: Repair tree pits and repair sidewalks broken by palm trees on the two main streets of Aguamarina. It was an amount approved in 2010 but never implemented. The damage created meanwhile by the roots of the palm trees was far higher and the amount increased to 32.000.-€. New Children's Park Las Filipinas Installing a playground and biosaludable equipment in the area of Las Filipinas with arrangement of green area around. This also was established and approved in 2010 and even had a contract AWARDED. Why has it not been carried out previously? Nobody knows. Roundabout Campoamor N332 and La Regia: Another contract budgeted and awarded without being executed. Twice the permits from the Ministry of Streets expired with the previous councillor. Upon my arrival the Ministry of Streets forced us to present the complete project from zero again in order to obtain a new permit, which we did. Completed prior to summer, those 2 roundabouts now look attractive. Repair and improvement on different playgrounds, such as in the urbanisations of Las Piscinas, La Ciñuelica and La Florida. Handrails: Following requests from residents, many missing handrails on accesses to different beaches have been replaced and additional railings have been installed, such as in: La Zenia, Cala Cerreda, Calle Mistral, Paseo Maritimo Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig and more sites. In Cabo Roig, all border walls are repaired and 700 meters of handrails have been installed. Avenida de La Playa in La Zenia.: The footpaths, lighting etc. have been completely redone. The sidewalks are now wide enough for the passage of wheelchairs, the lighting consists of the latest energy saving LED technology. The completely revamped Avda de La Playa in La Zenia
La Zenia pedestrian bridge and Las Piscinas pedestrian bridge: Offered as improvement by Marcos y Bañuls, but nobody had previously taken the necessary steps to carry them out, until now.
The Initiative of the MINISTRY OF STREETS to close 2 of the access roads to the roundabout in La Zenia: At the present moment the preliminary draft for the two bus stops – forgotten by the previous Government when the N332 was enlarged, and also ignored by the previous 2 councillors – has been approved. The final project is approved by the Ministry (Diputation) to receive a grant. What else should be said about this matter? The result shows that the different meetings held between myself, Antonio Zapata, our technicians and those responsible at the Ministry were very successful. Any additional output from the N332 in the area between Punta Prima and La Zenia to divert traffic has been denied by the Ministry. They made clear that in no case woul additional outputs in this section be authorized. Mr. Mancebo is very aware of this fact, as well as he is aware that no traffic lights at the height of Cala Mosca would be allowed, but it seems to produce good headlines in the press so he keeps asking for it.
First steps on the new La Zenia pedestrian bridge New paving of the promenade in Punta Prima: Executed with the remaining amount set up for improvements by Marcos y Bañuls. There was no other project prior to my arrival in February 2013 relating to allocate this money. The external audits for the Blue Flags and “Q” Quality had complained for years about the state of deterioration of this promenade.
Accessibility: I started a very much needed accessibility work in the coastal zone. In spite of the respective laws in force since 1998, accessibility in Orihuela Costa was nearly non existent, and obviously was not looked into very deeply when it came to surrender the different building sites to the town hall. Since February 2013 over 40 zebra crossings have been adapted for people with disabilities in the following developments: Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Regia, La Zenia, La Zenia II, Pau 2, C. Diamante, Villamartin, Pau 3, .Los Pinos New zebra crossings have been installed in several sites to increase pedestrian safety, such as near the Commercial Center Zenia Boulevard.

ORIHUELA COSTA IMPROVEMENTS
2013/ 2014
Additional stretch of promenade in Cala Capitan:
The new dog agility park on C/Pluton in La Florida
Improvements to the popular Cala Capitan promenade
There has been a construction of the section of boardwalk that was missing in Cala Capitan, previously only a sandy path, now built with the missing junction to the existing Paseo. A very and very well seen by the Auditors of the beaches for the certificates of Blue Flags and Quality-Q. Path and railing between Aquamarina and Calas de Campoamor: Steps connecting Aquamarina and Calas de Campoamor
We proceeded to the replacement of basketball equipment in different parks, the soccer goals have been replaced or repaired and repainted. Multiple additional repairs not covered by existing maintenance contracts in Orihuela Costa have been carried out, such as: Sinking in Calle Papaya, railing and planting in Calle ParanĂĄ and many others. Parks and gardens: Landscaping of the slopes in Barranco Rubio Adequacy of irrigation in Campoamor Tarraga Park Additional landscaping of Villa Piedra Landscaping, painting and arrangement in La Regia next to the tunnel to N332.
International Residents: For the first time International Resident Care has an administrative officer available during opening hours of the Town Hall. In the past this office was staffed only by the Adviser and closed when the advisor was not available. We have established a current Mailing List, which contains almost 300 email addresses of administrators, presidents, associations and private citizens, registered under the email of residentes@orihuela.es, and not, as it was in the past, under the particular email address of an advisor. This means that any change in the Government, this email list will not disappear. Press releases, information on cultural, sports events etc., any act done by the town hall or by associations, groups etc. are passed onto everybody. Through this email about 20 requests a day are answered in different languages. Landslides in Cala Capitan. Work on coastal landslides is currently being carried out
50 rear cargo containers were purchased, as well as 11 side-loading paper and cardboard recycling containers and 2 side-loading containers for plastic recycling. This money has comes out of the budget of the Department of Costa responding to the demands and needs of the residents, replacements for breakage or vandalism.
The Aguamarina Promenade (near the Thursday market) was bounded by a low wall that pedestrians exceeded to use a narrow and dangerous path. Now there are stairs in proper conditions and matching the surrounding frequented by the many visitors to this area. Sidewalks: Pavement sections which were missing have been build in different areas, including: behind the school / college in Playa Flamenca; in the two tunnels under the N332 up to Playa Flamenca; on the corner of La Regia where also the tree growing right on the sidewalk has been transplanted in the green area; between the commercial centers Los Dolses and La Rioja, where there was no sidewalk and all pedestrians had to walk on the street. Reform and accessibility of a 60 m. stretch of sidewalk was made in Villamartin In all these cases the new foot paths are wide enough for wheelchairs. Parks and sports facilities: Fenced area for small dogs with agility obstacles in La Florida on Calle Pluton. Installation of three tennis tables, one in a park in La Florida, one in a park in Campoamor and in the urbanization Horizonte.
Biosaludables machines and games: On the beaches of La Cala Capitan and La Glea the biosaludables machines were replaced. The beaches of Mil Palmeras, Barranco Rubio, La Glea, Cala Capitan and Playa Flamenca received new and rehabilitated playgrounds. Conservatory of Flowers A greenhouse was created to always have available potting flowers and plants. Those have already being used successfully along the Promenade of La Zenia, Cala Cerrada and Aguamarina. Urban and sports furniture: We bought street furniture, benches, bicycle parking, pylons etc. amounting to 12,000 euro, as well as 3 ping-pong tables, various goals, basketball nets etc. amounting to 8,000 euro. Reading Point / Library: The municipal building on Calle Cypres is partially used as Library run only by volunteers. The Department of Costa has proceeded to the purchase of shelves, tables and chairs needed. As of today reading this small library has nearly 150 registered members and more than 10,000 books and equipment that helps people with limited visual ability. Audio books on CD are also available in English language. It is thanks to the coordination by my personal assistant Heike Schug and the work of volunteers that this service can be offered to the citizens of the Coast.
Since I have assumed the responsibility of the Coastal Department I have exchanged several letters with the Ministry of Costas to clarify responsibilities for landslides in Cala Capitan, the necessary authorizations to act etc. The action proposal about a stabilization system has recently been sent to the Ministry and has been agreed by them. The project is being carried out at the present moment and the work will be done within the next few months, including the repair of the walk way. Sharing commitment The budgetary commitment to allocate 40% of the money from the sale of municipal land on the coast investments in this area has not changed at all. Emergency Center: This work has been paralyzed for more than three years, because of failure of the contractor. The ConsellerĂa of Valencia is in charge of the contract and responsible for the work. WIFI in Orihuela Costa This very ambitious project was not completed by the former councillor of the PP, David Costa, since the whole project depends on having electricity on Mount Hurchillo where the transmission equipment that would allow to link the districts and the Coast with the centre of Orihuela is positioned. To this day this transmitter remains without electricity as it was not possible to find a legal and authorized form to have it. These are just some of the many things that were done since February 2013 in Orihuela Costa, prioritizing multiple requests and needs from residents.

THE OTHER CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
t’s that time of year again when things start to change from the usual routine. The nights draw in, but the streets are festooned with bright decorations. The weather turns colder, but the restaurants and bars are packed with revelers. Yes, it’s that time – Christmas. However for most of us expats, Christmas means something very different to its meaning in the UK. Generally we are older and aging more, and the exuberance pouring out from the children doesn’t reach us here in the same way. We tend to spend the approach to Christmas in a more sedate manor with dinners, rather than the manic party going of our childhood and younger days. But as we age, we also notice more, and at this time of year, that is so important. We notice more those around us; just the normal people we see every day; but more so now. The little old lady two doors down you haven’t seen for several days; a colleague who seems to be behaving differently; the old man sitting on a bench in the park staring at nothing for hours; the lady sitting drinking endless cups of tea in the cafe. Why not just approach them with a smile and ask how they are. They may really appreciate this small gesture, so often just having someone notice them and listen to them can transform their whole day. You don’t need to help, or even know how to help, as so often just someone to listen is all that is needed. If, as you listen to them, you feel that they could do with extra, you could guide them towards more personal support such as family, confidant or close friends or even towards professional help which they may never have considered. This could include a priest, doctor, nurse, counsellor, therapist, mentor, and so many other ways.

By simply approaching someone who appears lonely with a smile and asking how they are could make all the difference to them, and to you. It could show that this time of year isn’t just the commercial event it seems to have become; rather it is as it really should be; a time for caring and sharing. But Christmas isn’t just about others, however important they are, it is also about YOU. This time of year can be very lonely for so many people, for so many reasons. The same advice holds good for you yourself; seek out that listening ear, smile, be open to others just as much as to yourself. As André Alexis once said, “The group of people in front of her was jovial and paid her no attention. The group behind was much the same. She was alone without being alone.” If you feel alone, even in a crowd, there is a less intrusive service; Samaritans in Spain, who offer a free totally confidential listening service by phone 24 hours a day 365 days a year on 902 88 35 35, by email on pat@samaritansinspain.com or at their shop and drop-in centre at Punta Marina Centre. Their motto is “You talk, we listen” so you or your friend would need to do just that, talk. A trained listener is on call right through the holiday period, so please, if you feel you need someone to just listen to you, then call Samaritans in Spain at any time. The current costs of calling the Samaritans 902 number is 9 cents Connection, plus 4 to 8 cents per minute depending on time of day. Sadly, the mobile prices differ with each mobile phone company, but can cost a staggering 40 to 80 cents a minute, so wherever possible try to use a Telefónica landline or call box. Enjoy this festive time of year, but remember that should you need the Samaritans, they are available 24/7. Lubbertus

EATING OUT AND TRAVELLING AROUND THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON Here´s our pick of the best things to do around the local this week, as well as a few future events for your diary. eeping with our “support your local” theme for this week, we start with a look at some of the best options locally for a bite to eat, not only at Christmas, although we do cover that, but on a regular basis too, so you can plan not only for the season, but into next year too. For a more traditional dining experience, you could give Legends Bar in Playa Flamenca a try. They recently welcomed back their Sunday Carvery, with a wide range of starters and desserts at just 2 euro each and their weekly changing menu of main courses for just 5 euro. The Local in La Florida is another great venue, with entertainment on regularly and a full menu available, including special offers like their “buy one get one free” offers. Eduardo´s in Villamartin are proud that their “legendary” Sunday lunch “Just got so much better”, and with 3 courses for under 10 euro, it´s clear why it´s so popular. They also offer an evening sitting for a little bit more, and a new a la carte menu. Rocky´s Arena Pub at Alameda del Mar is another gem of a venue, with their Christmas Day Carvery of 3 courses on offer for just 40 euro, as well as their Carvery served on a Sunday afternoon, with starters and desserts for 2 euro and the main course just short of 8 euro. “Discover the Real Spain”, that´s what´s on offer at La Herradura, where their “Passion for Cooking” is clear from their wide range of options, including a special gluten free menu. For Christmas Day, there´s a special menu, with drinks, accompanied
K
by a live Flamenco show, all for just 35 euro, as well as a Boxing Day menu for 25 euro and a New Year´s Eve dinner dance with a 7 course meal and 7 wines, plus accompaniment from the Cuban band “Chocolate Son”, all for just 90 euro. Bar Establo in San Miguel has a choice of Christmas menus for under 20 euro, as well as a New Year´s Eve buffet, including midnight soup and lucky grapes for just 25 euro. You should realise of course that many of these venues will be booked well in advance, and only a certain number of places are available at each. The Plácido Domingo good news is, by flicking is performing at through the pages of The the Gran Teatre de Leader, you can find the Elche on the 20th contact details for all of of December them, so have a look at what takes your fancy and then give them a call today, before you miss out. If you fancy a bit of a trip further afield, David´s Coachtrips has a great range of tours on offer this season, including stays away for Christmas or New Year in Benidorm or Benalmadena, or just a night out on Boxing Day to Benidorm Palace.
We must mention a concert for classical music fans, as international superstar Plácido Domingo is performing at the Gran Teatre de Elche on the 20th of December, with the show starting at 8pm and tickets starting at 40 euro. Now a reminder of some of the events we´ve mentioned recently that are still going on or have yet to start. Exponadal is on at Alicante´s IFA exhibition centre from the 26th of December until the 4th of January, although it is closed on the 31st of December, which focuses on leisure activities for children and young people, offering presentations on crafts, sports, dancing, magic, terror, cultural games, ingenuity and skill, activities in English, and a zip-line, climbing wall, archery and much more, not forgetting clowns, trapeze, juggling and magic in the circus area. For history buffs, EL PECIO BOU FERRER is an exhibition worth visiting in Orihuela. On until the 8th of January, it displays artefacts from the Bou Ferrer, the largest Roman ship being excavated in the
Mediterranean. The original findings from the site were reported in 1999, and so protection was immediately afforded due to the historic significance of the site. The ship was carrying 3,000 amphorae called “Dressel 7-11”, manufactured in Cádiz, each said to be containing fish sauce, and an accompanying cargo of lead ingots from the mines of Sierra Morena. The ship and her cargo have been featured by the National Geographic and the event is a considerable exhibition for Orihuela, where it will be held in the Maria Moliner public library. In Alicante, the Star Wars exhibition continues at the Castillo de Santa Bárbara until April next year, and the exhibition relating to historic wine producing in the province continues at the MARQ Museo Arqueológico de Alicante until January. The Zenia Boulevard has an ice rink installed in the car park and Father Christmas can be visited most days until Christmas Eve, when he has to go and do his main job for the year, and so the Three Kings then take over with Melchor appearing from Boxing Day. This weekend there´s carol singing on Friday and a Christmas parade on Sunday. With so much going on around the area, there is something for everybody to do this Christmas period. We will keep you updated in The Leader each week of our pick of the best selection, and on Exite Radio every day, on 93.1fm and www.exiteradio.com.

Pulsars played at home Vistabella Albatrosses this was an afternoon game we managed to finish before it got dark but we might have played better in the dark as we only won on 1 rink which was Paul Thomas, Derek Farmer and Gary Raby shots for 74 shots against 122 points for 2 points against 12. Southern League Jaguars played away to Greenland’s Oaks we won on 4 rinks and unlucky not to have won on 5 after loosing it on the last end, but still a good win points for 10 points against 4. By StJohn Broadhurst It’s strange how the fixtures work out, as once again it was two away games for the club last week. First up were the Flamingos on Monday, 8 December in the SABA Discovery league with a trip to El Rancho to take on the Broncos. It’s always a tricky green to play on and I think it’s fair to say that home advantage certainly favours El Rancho. We did come away with four points so well done to Del Gunning, Peter Robins, Karen Kirk 19-9. Sandra McIlroy, Pat Ray, Peter Dix 16-15. There was also an honourable draw for Glynis Broadhurst, Jean Turner, Brian Ray in a friendly. Overall shots Flamingos 77 (4 pts) Broncos 129 (10 pts). On Friday, 12 December the Ramblers made the long journey north to do battle with La Marina Sharks in a CBBA Southern league match. Second in the league the Sharks didn’t have it all their own way as the Ramblers battled away to come away with four points. Winning rinks were Del Gunning, Bryan Kirk, Karen Kirk 24-13. Carole Donnellan, Dennis Birkett, Peter Whitehall 17-15. Also well done to Jo Wright, John Wright, Trevor Cox and Sandra McIlroy, Peter Dix, StJohn Broadhurst, both rinks losing out by just one shot. Overall shots Ramblers 89 (4 pts) Sharks 112 (10 pts). This is my last report for a few weeks as we have a break for Christmas and the New Year, so on behalf of Country Bowls a very Happy Christmas and New Year to all the readers of the paper and our fellow bowlers in the CBBA and SABA leagues. www.countrybowlsclub.com
LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB. Our annual Miralgo tournament was held last weekend, with teams from nine different clubs taking part. Two lovely sunny and windy days of bowls were enjoyed by all players, with three of the four sections winners being from La Marina, namely those skipped by Alan Castle, Barry Latham, and John Morgan. John's team of Dave Williams and Margaret McLaughlin went on into the final where they were only narrowly beaten by the excellent team from Quesada comprised of Peta Rhodes, Derek Sale and Skip Bill Pain. Congratulations to Quesada and thanks to our sponsors, Peter and Louisa. On the League front Monday saw Explorers played at home Greenland’s Maples winning 12 points to 2 highest winners on the day being the trip of Ron Maden, Lath Manning skip Barry Latham. The Pathfinders played at San Miguel coming away with a creditable 8 points to 6 win the highest winning trip (just) being Gina Hindle, Arthur Cronk skip Dave Hadaway. The Astronauts also away at Monte Mar Toreadors losing 10 points to 4 the best winners on the day Maggie Sadler, Dave Willas skip John Rae. Our rinks team playing in the El Rancho invitation were at home to El Rancho winning on all 3 rinks highest winners on the day the rink of Loretta Rae, Carol Smith, Mike Brain skip Steve Hindle, the win puts them top of the league going into the Christmas break. We would like to wish all our members, Friends and fellow bowlers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
GREENLANDS BOWLING CLUB by Brian Hewett It seems to be Drubbing Week for GBC this week as you will see as I quickly record the scores!! VOYAGER DIVISION The CHESTNUTS,away to VB Drivers, lost 14-0. ENTERPRISE DIVISION Both the SYCAMORES at Home to E.I Titans and the MAPLES Away to LM Explorers lost; but the Maples did win 2 points. Best Rink of the Day was Diane Lawton, Mel Brown and Skip Tom Hill WINTER LEAGUE & BERLEEN TROPHY Our Leaguers also gained 2 points from 2 drawn rinks; 16-16 on both rinks!! The drawn rinks were: Maggie Gray, Trevor Vanner, Roy Cordell & Skip Brian Pocock and Sue Johnson, Mike Thomas, Angie Goodfellow & Skip Tom Hill. The BERLEENERS also lost. PREMIER 20 LEAGUE We lost 7 points - 11 points against San Luis, the shot difference being 113 -142. The outstanding performance of the day was by Barry Collins who was pitched in at the eleventh hour to play the Singles at home and won 21 - 18. Our other winners at home were Mike Veale and Lynn Greenland who won 13 - 12 after a close measure on the last end. Away, Sheila Stead, Averil Toozer and Roy Cordell won 16 - 15. SOUTHERN LEAGUE. The week ended roughly like the beginning; we lost BUT not so dramatically!! Division A The OAKS went down to SM Jaguars 10 to 4. Division B The ELMS lost to Mazarron by 12 points to 2 but the winning rink had 2 novices playing their first competitive game. Exceptionally well done Janet Bliss,& John O'Leary and maybe the Skip provided a little bit of quality leadership Mike! Division C The CEDARS were back into their 5 for & 9 against rut but that's not a bad away result against the VB Conquistadors. BRM was Pat Wray, Jean Giddings & Skip Dave Giddings. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Our bowling week began away from home for The Broncos, at Country Bowls against The Flamingos, both teams played well with some close rinks. It was a good day for The Broncos, having some great fun, taking the rinks by 4 to 2 and also the overall shots by a reasonable margin. Tony Robinson, Graham Day and John Donovan 1516. John Cleal, John Skipper and Eddie Thomson 41-5. Maureen Newell, Rob Clark and John Newell 24-12. Bob Easthope, Ron Edwards and Shirley Edwards 9-19. Brian Taylor, Irene Thomson and John Featherstone 24-10. Jane Hamill, Sandra Twentyman and David Whitworth 16-15. The final rinks league game of the season was a marvellous morning out at La Marina. We might not have won a rink but we are strengthening our relations with a great crowd of people. La Marina won all three rinks so win the two points with a shot difference of 41 shots to El Rancho and 80 shots to La Marina. Friday found us entertaining La marina Dolphins, in our final league match of the year, as always the company was great and we had plenty of fun. As always the fun is more important than the result, but we did manage both by taking the rinks by 4 to 2 and the overall shots by a reasonable margin. A good morning’s bowls, enjoyed by all, with matches closer than the points might imply. Maxine Wright, Gary Newson and Rod Wright 16-13. Trish Elsam, Barbara Jones and Geoff Jones 11-27. Jane Hamill, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 36-6. Jim Gracie, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 45-5. Edward Elsam, John Skipper and Stew Hamill 10-21. Margaret Odell, Keith Cunningham and Ron Odell 41-7. LA SIESTA BOWLS REPORT
By Norman Adcroft SABA Discovery and Voyager Leagues 8th Dec. The Apollos were away for an afternoon game to top of the table The Monte Mar Matadors, and were very unlucky not to take all the points by winning four rinks and narrowly losing two on the last end. That said we did go into the match six points behind The Matadors, and did enough to put us top of the table on shot difference. Our winners were, Ramsay Sinclair, Yours Truly and Brian Gardiner 32-9, Anne and Robert Heath with John Ball 25-9, Carol Broomfield, Doug Smith, with George Richardson 26-16 and Jean and Norman Murphy with Dave Livesey 20-15. Shots 82-131 Apollos. The Sputniks were at home to Vistabella Eagles and had a good result which quite easily could, and should have been a lot better. With three rinks won and two drawn, John Porter dropped a four on the last end to give the visitors a draw, and Captain John Taylor dropped a SIX (yes, a six) to give the Eagles another drawn rink!! Shots 105-105, (which goes to prove every shot count) gave us the win 9-5. Winning rinks were, Beryl Styring, Harold Charleton, Arthur Kingsbury 25-10, Dawn Taylor, Ken Combstock, Dave Laverick 21-10 and Irene Laverick, Liz Combstock, Irene Mangan 16-9. Drawing rinks were, Penny Porter, Alan Barton, John Porter 20-20, Rab Logan, Rod Edgerton and John Taylor 19-19. CBBA Southern League A, B and C 12th Dec. The Blues had another bad day at the office losing on all rinks. Hopefully we can do better when we start again on the 16th JANUARY. Thank you to Bill Jordan and George Richardson for playing. The Golds were at home against The Horadada Royals, and had a good result to end this half of the season. Shots; 107-86 and points 10-4 to the Golds, Winning Rinks, Jo Elkin, John Moss, Gary Thorpe 27-11 Dawn Taylor, Dave Davies, Carol Thorpe 26-10, Sheila and Roy Millward with Dave Livesey, 20-11, and Win and, Ken Kirton with John Taylor 19-13. Well done, merry Christmas & Happy New Year: The Silvers were away to The Emerald Isle Outlaws and were unlucky to come away with only five points for their efforts, winning two rinks and drawing one. Winners, Margaret and Norman Stephens with Alex Morrice 22-18, Kathleen and Peter Knapp with Tom Heaslewood 1814 and the Drawn rink, Irene Laverick, Beryl Styring, Irene Mangan 15-15. Rab Logan, Liz Combstock and Harold Charleton were very unlucky to lose their game after a tremendous fight back from 21-1 to only lose 23-20. Chicken and Egg 10th Dec. - Chicken, Sheila Booton, Wine, Trigger, Eggs, Josephine Masset. LA MANGA BOWLS CLUB La Manga were at home to Quesada Swifts in the final League B game before the festive break. After a rather slow start we finished the first part of the season strongly. This was helped by winning all the rinks in this particular game and gaining the full 14 points. Star performer on the day was the rink skipped by Stuart Fisher with Ken Olerenshaw and Henry Klages who led the way with an excellent score. Their result was strongly backed by the other 5 rinks. Sue Letby was partnered by her husband David and new comer to the League, Jane Holly. This was an exciting and tight match against a team led by Jack Burrell with Kevin McKenna and John Watson for Quesada. The home team won on the last end so very well done to all! After the game the teams enjoyed very well earned drinks and a menu del dia at the local bar "Tie Break" next to the bowls green. A lovely way to enjoy a great day's bowling! A special mention must be given to Jane Holley, Leoni Parks, Jerry Saunders and Ute Wessendorf who played a major part in our win. They stepped in to play for the team as so many of our bowlers are now back in their home countries. During this week's club matches there were wins for the twin pairings of Jutta Klages and Ully Simon, Ute Wessendorf and Brian Simon and the triples match of Leonie Parkes, David Fowkes and Stuart Fisher. We continue to improve our facilities and have now had installed a new Toldo which offers excellent protection against the elements and will give increased comfort for all bowlers at our green. La Manga Bowls Club welcomes both experienced bowlers and novices and full coaching is available to new players where needed. During the summer informal bowls matches are arranged and even during the winter season the green is open at all times except when competitions and matches are scheduled. We play numerous club competitions and are also members of the Costa Blanca League, playing both home and away matches on a weekly basis during the winter season from mid-September to the end of March. If you would like to try this enjoyable and social sport and for more information please call: Ron 968 338489, Stuart 968 338282, Sue 968 175990 or visit our website www.lamangaclubowners.co.uk click on “Sports-Activities” –“Bowls” or e-mail us on: bowlatlamanga@gmail.com The members of La Manga Bowls Club would like to wish all our fellow bowlers and their families a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We very much look forward to meeting up with you all in the New Year.

180´s: Peter Ayres x 2 (Porter House), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov, Lee Maiden (Meerkats), Mike Smith (Breakaways), Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Matt Cummins (Pint Depot Kings) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) Highest finish this week: 103 Lee Maiden (Meerkats) Another mid season break this week to facilitate the KO Cup and KO Handicap Plate. Last season´s finalists Meerkats and Busters locked horns a little earlier in the competition this term, but the outcome was the same but closer than the score line suggests. Current cup holders Kats hope to continue their five year stranglehold on the competition, but face tough opposition from fellow Hubbers the Hyenas who also made it through to the semis after taking out a spirited Jaguars side that should have run the tie a lot closer. Jackals also make the semi final draw after their visit to the Que Pasa venue of the Kestrels. Some assured finishing from the visitors was the main difference between the sides in the first to 7 legs triples event. The Kats´ dominance of the cup may well end this season, but another reasonable performance against the tidy Busters side leaves them 2 ties away from 6 consecutive cup winning seasons. Busters turned up with a full compliment of players and started with a vengeance. Mark Filer opened with a 125 followed soon after with a 121 from Ray Harvey. Steady, but not great scores from the hosts left Lee Maiden 72 of the 701 required, accomplished nicely using S12,S20,D20. After the theft of the first, the Kats sprung into action with 140,120 (including a bounce out) from Pat Abrams, a ton and D10 from Paul Durrant. A 140 from Durrant in the third was countered by Filer´s 138 to leave a double, Maiden requiring 60 next throw. The required points were duly finished in two for 3-0. Paul Dowington scored heavily in the fourth and found D16 to retrieve a leg. The affable Buster continued in the fifth with 85,123 enabling Babs Warren a shot at 63. Her first found T19, the next D17 for D3. Unlucky or what! Del Kingsbury said thank you very much to find D2 for 4-1. Graham Todd continued his good form of late, contributing 95,83 and a double for 5-1 at the break. The match resumed with tons from Busters Dowington and Harvey, Durrant replying with 140 but missing a double top. Abrams obliged next throw to leave the Kats on the brink of victory. Dowington upped his game with a 140 for the visitors, needing every leg to stay in the competition. Abrams response of a ton proved insufficient as Harvey nailed D4 for Busters second leg. No tons for the Busters, in what was to be the last leg, as Maiden made the leg his own scoring a 180 and a tasty 103 out (T20,S3,D20) for the match. Nice to see the Russells, Irene and Bill, still enjoying their darts after 56 years of marriage. Bill is really a snooker addict so doesn’t mind leaving all the darts glory to Irene, who still finds the treble regularly. Lovely couple. Favourites for the cup, Hyenas travelled down to the El Galan venue of the Junction, where the Jaguars lay in wait. The hosts gave a good account of themselves in the first three triples, Hilda Wilkinson recording 83,85,85,113, Pat Schofield 100 and Dee Green 80,81 and 129 placing the Hyenas under pressure. Unfortunately the Jaguars scores were more than matched by Nick Spicer (Hyenas ton machine) 2x100,140,D16,D20, Cyril Harrison 83,95,97 and not forgetting Joe Hawkins making it 0-3 on D2. Phew! The next triples were even tighter, great performances from Simone de Lacy 85,85,85,76, well
supported by Sylvia Bishop, Angie Craggs and Tracy Simpson 83,60,116 plus two doubles D8 and D10 just edged out the Hyenas trio, who mustered just the one leg via Shaun Smith on D3. Joe Miller´s high scoring wasn’t converted into doubles by his Hyenas team mates. The visitors captain Simon Williams increased their lead on D10 after three figure scores from Spicer and Harrison. De Lacy 85,95,83 dug in as did Wilkinson and Simpson to set up de Lacy for D9 and a 3-5 score line. Similar scoring from the same Jaguar trio, just wasn’t enough as Miller, Williams and Smith took the last two legs for a deserved but very close victory. Breakaways are enjoying a great unbeaten league run this term and I guess expected a result against an under-performing Gogarty´s who have yet to win a match in Division 1, despite their capabilities. Richard Pattison and John Williams teamed up with Bulls captain Steve Woods for the first set of triples and quickly posted two wins after Woods had top scored with 140,100, Pattison finding the first on D11, Williams the second. Del Lister responded in the third with the vital double after whacking in a 140. Breakaways drew level after the fourth courtesy of Mike Snow even though Gail Todd 95 and Kevin Fitzpatrick 95 and 133 had pounded the T19. Fitzpatrick found the next two doubles to increase the hosts lead to 4-2, Williams making it 5 after a Woods ton. Another double from Williams, this time D8, gave the Bulls a commanding 6-2 advantage, giving the opportunity of captain Woods to replace Williams with Pattison, who promptly found D10 for the winning leg and a place in the semis. The fourth quarter final yet again featured a Division 1 and 2 encounter, between the Que Pasa Kestrels enjoying a recent run of success and the Jackals who consistently blow hot and cold. The Lanes Michelle and Harvey teamed up with Gilly Kirby in the first and all acquitted themselves well, Harvey the younger finding a ton. The opposition also found tons through Jimmy Gray and Phil de Lacy 101 who also planted his arrow in D8 for the first, despite three attempts to close out from the Kestrels. Harvey Lane continued where he left off with 98 and 100 setting up Kirby to find D4 to complete the 701. Three misses from the disappointed Kestrel allowed de Lacy to find his favourite D16 to go 2 up. Keith King wore his scoring boots in the third to nail a 140, de Lacy adding 80 and 81, Kirby the only Kestrel finding a decent score in response, which left King plenty of time to take out D18 for 0-3. Chris Miles 85, Yvette Samuel 85,85 and Brett Badlove 126, totally outscored the Jackals, but it was the visitors Kenny Wilkinson getting the all important double for the leg on D20. Mick Jones continued his steady form for the Jackals but it was Alan Preston sporting a severe back problem who countered with 95,100 and D2 to reduce the deficit. Steph Simpson stepped into the fray in the 6th and opened his account with D4 after some nice scoring. Kirby, Lane and Samuel were every bit the Jackals equal in the next and subsequently took the leg via Kirby on D10 first arrow. Badlove did his utmost to rally the Kestrels with a ton, but Simpson´s 100,100 and 81 followed by King´s double left the visitors one leg away from victory. And so it happened, a 98 from King plus a 114 from “19s man” Wilkinson and the vital double, D8, gave the Jackals their 7th leg and match.

The Russells still turning out for Busters
In the newly introduced KO Handicap Plate two matches have been unavoidably postponed, however the two other winning teams will be all out for glory in this handicap competition. The Porters found themselves a little short of playing personnel this week, several players now in the UK for the Yuletide season. They did however beat off a tough challenge from the Tavern Drivers. Ron Hindley 100 and Ricky Cox D2 making it 0-2 (Drivers enjoying a one leg start). Two more tons from Hindley looked ominous for the Porters but Mike Newberry 102 and Sid Cross D1 retrieved the situation. A reverse of fortunes in the next as Cross hit the ton with Newberry finishing. Ralph Weatherby got the Taverners ahead again on D16 despite a 117 from Con Rouffignac. Justin Hepburn D7 increased the lead for the Villamartin outfit, Stu Mitchell helping out with a ton. Hepburn´s 102 looked good enough to increase their lead but Rouffignac spoiled the Taverners efforts to take out D2. Cross levelled the match on D10 after Ray Hayes 100, the game now finely poised. From this point on it was the Cross and Hayes double act. Hayes D10 and 100 followed by Cross´s 100,140,D1 and match winning D8 were just too much for the game Taverners. Next round for both KO Cup and Plate competitions is on February 5th 2015, teams not included may wish to arrange friendlies.

On Fri 5 Dec 25 members and three guests played our monthly stableford at our home course, La Marquesa. After three days of rain the course fairways were a little soggy and this affected one or two players adversely resulting in some very capable players not scoring too well. However this did give us average players a chance to win some prizes. The best of the three guests was Ian Pegg with a score of 27 points. NTP prizes on the par threes were won by Stan Low (5), Malcolm Foskett (11 and 15), and Bob Shorley on Hole 17.
By John Fairhurst
The best front was also won by Bob Shorley (16 points) and Debbie Weedon scraped in with 15 points to win the best back score. Fourth today with 31 points was Beverley Fairhurst. Three players all scored 32 points and countback decided the order which was third John Holland, second Stan Low and the winner John Fairhurst. After the match we retired to Monos Bar on Quesada where our host and sponsor Chris Gridley provided his usual welcome repast. Photo shows some of the winners

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. The Alphabet of Golf Last week we took a jovial look at the game by creating the alphabet of golf looking at letters A to M and today we continue with N-Z: N Not sign-posted (refers to nearly all golf courses in Spain) O Out of Bounds (most often used by the poor golfer) P Penalty Shot (usually the result of an errant shot and mis understood by many) Q Quandary (the state of a golfers mind after a golf lesson) R Rules of Golf (these can be used to your advantage if understood) S Society Secretary (unpaid, overworked and often verbally abused) T Trees (apparently they are 86% air you know) U Unusual (a cheating golfer who can count) V Victory (usually the domain of the more consistent golfers) W Walkers (the most rare of golfers as nearly all players want a ride in a buggy) X Xtreme (language used by most male golfers on the course) Y Yips ( a putting affliction usually affecting better players only) Z Zombie (the state of the tourist golfer the day after a heavy drinking session) We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.

IMANYO GOLF SOCIETY - Phil Ward Carers Cup at Vistabella! bers were playing the course for the first time which was in good condition considering the rain the night before, they said if you like a challenge this course provides it as there are many large areas of fairway, bunkers with bunkers all round the greens. (The motto is if you like sand this is the course for you). The format was full handicap Stableford and scores were close. The winner was Eamon Murphy with 28 points, runner up Steve Day with 26 points and the endeavour award went to Antonio Garcia Gallud with 6 points, this was the first time he had been on a golf course and only had a couple of lessons not bad hey. The only player to get nearest the pin was Carol Murphy on the 8th. The cup was presented by Margaret Ward to Eamon Murphy back at Imanyo’s Bar To see all future competitions, which vary over different courses visit www.imanyogolfsociety.com and then all you need to do to join this new society is email your full name and handicap to the secretary at imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com The Imanyo Golf Society is a new free society formed by a group of friends in Daya Nueva. Another great day for golf and after a very late change of golf course we welcomed first time players Ian Bell Ronnie King and Antonio Gallud. We should have played at Font Del Llop but due to torrential rain the night before the course had to be closed due to flooding. We all turned up to Imanyo’s for breakfast as usual and naturally everybody was disappointed that the game had to be cancelled. Eamon suggest trying to book at Vistabella as this course drains very well so by 9 o’clock we had arranged tee times at Vistabella where we found the staff very accommodating. Believe it or not the weather was perfect for golf, although some of the bunkers were hard and puddled due to the rain. Most of our mem-
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY - W/E 12 DEC 14 Firstly the result from our Vega Baja league match at El Valle last Friday was a win for our team by 3 to 1 against Club 25 moving us into 2nd place in the league. Phil Herrington managed 4 birdies in his round. We started this week off with a Best 2 from 4 with all scores counting on the Par 5's. The winners with a good score of 92 pts were Geoff Biggerstaff, Phil Herrington, Rachel Leckey and 'Albert'. We were wrapped up in several layers to keep out the cold for our weekly stableford with the starting temperature at only 6 Celsius. It rose significantly however when our chipping queen Carole Wheeler scored a hole in one on the Par 3 14th. This meant that she won the total 2's Club pot which came in useful in the bar at the end of the round well done! This was the standout moment as only two players were

PADDY'S POINT GS @ LAS COLINAS - Norman McBride Winter Cup 26 members and guests ventured out for a game of golf in beautiful sunny conditions but were caught out on arriving at Las Colinas by the very strong wind. The greens were electric and together with the strong wind many golfers found that after landing on the greens in 2 or 3 their putts landed off the green, very frustrating. The course was as always in great condition and the staff at Las Colinas took great care of us but the weather conditions were the talk of the day. We returned to Paddy's Point for refreshments (many thanks to Hazel and her staff) followed by the prize giving. Norman McBride donated a new trophy for us to play for every winter but unfortunately due to an illness in the family he was unable to present the trophy to the winner. His son David stood in for him and ended up presenting the trophy to himself! his dad will be well pleased. NTP hole 5 - Myra Coull, NTP hole 7 - Terry Fitzgerald, NTP hole 10 - Shaun Murphy, NTP hole 14 - Myra Coull, NTP hole 17 - Paul Tooley Longest drive, hole 18 - Myra Coull, Best Guest - Paul Tooley 1st - David McBride 32pts, 2nd - Rory Lee 31 pts, 3rd - Terry Fitzgerald 30 pts The scores on the day reflected the very windy conditions with only 4 players scoring 30 points or over. Future events: Wednesday 14th January - La Serena (no wind please!), Wednesday 11th February - El Valle Names are now being taken for two events which will fill up quickly: President's Day @ Las Colinas - Wednesday 25th February, Captain's Day @ Las Colinas - Wednesday 8th April followed by presentation dinner @ Las Ramblas

FARCICAL CONDITIONS TURN LOCAL DERBY INTO LOTTERY
CREVILLENTE.........1 CD TORREVIEJA ....1 (Match Abandoned 63 mins) Going into this game the focus was on the play off zone as a mid table Torry side visited 7th place Crevillente. The home side, just one point below 4th, was looking for its first victory in six games while for the visitors, with just one win in six, three points would see them climbing several places, lifting them to within touching distance of the play offs approaching the much needed Christmas break. What we didn’t consider though were the atrocious conditions that this game would be played in. As we travelled up the AP7 from Torrevieja we all thought that we had escaped the worst of the afternoon’s torrential downpour but unfortunately it followed us up the motorway firmly establishing itself over the top of the Estadio Municipal Enrique Miralles where a large, dark, rain-filled cloud camped itself for the majority of this match. Fortunately the surface was artificial. Had it been any other the game most certainly would not have been played but match referee Jonatan Bernabeu Peña and his team thought better and it got underway on time despite a multitude of puddles lying all over the playing area. In places it resembled a ‘paddy field’ rather than a football pitch. With the game less than 5 minutes old the first real chance fell to the home side and it required a top class save as Oscar in the Torry goal turned Pilar’s effort around the post to deny the best possible start
for Crevillente. From the outset the game was a farce with the conditions ruining any attempts by the teams to play any decent football. The ball was continually sticking in the puddles, particularly in the Crevillente half where most of them seemed to be established, and as the game went on the rain just got worse. But when Torry took an 11th minute lead from a screamer of a Rafa Gomez free kick we all hoped that the rain would go away. Five minutes later we were wishing it back as Cristian Navarro rose above the Torry defence to meet Edu’s free kick and level the scores, another example of the Torry back 4 being undone at a set piece. With the conditions continuing to get worse Borja had a late opportunity for the visitors with Jesus going close just prior to the interval for Crevillente. We all thought the game would be abandoned during the interval so we were rather surprised to see the players, resplendent in their clean strips, return to the Crevillente swamp to get the 2nd period underway. There seemed little doubt however that as the deluge continued the referee would eventually see sense and call a halt…and such was the case on 63 minutes when Bernabeu Peña made the only sensible decision he could as he determined that enough was enough. So both teams trooped in with the score at 1-1 knowing that they would have to meet up once again at a later date to play out the remaining 27 minutes. Next Sunday Torry are at home to La Nucia with a 5pm ko n the Nelson Mandela Stadium Torry lineup: Oscar, Vicente, Eddy, Alexis, Ruben, Sergi, Borja, Burguillos, Cesar, Rafa, Cristian. Subs: Carrasco, Marcos, Adrian, Steve, Ferran.

BUSTERS GOLF SOCIETY Barry Grinsell For this months game we visited Roda, the course was in excellent condition for the time of the year, the green keepers have put a lot of effort into their work, extra care was required with your putting as the greens dried out , and when the wind dropped it seemed like early spring time ,which helped to make our golf that much more enjoyable Onto our golf, for our POY award we ( or the Society Golf Programme ) take the best eight games from the total games played by each golfer for the year , to give a final total , this years POY trophy was won by Bill Peters with a total of 274 points giving an average of 34.25 points for the eight games that counted , beating his closest opponents by more than 12 pts ,well done Bill who plays off a handicap of 10. The scores on the doors for this months stableford competition were as follows our N T P s were taken by , on the 7th hole Graham Ball , the 13th was won by Dave Pretty and hole 13 being won by Barrie Hopkinson , none of our players managed to hit the 2nd green with their tee shot , each NTP received a sleeve of three Srixon golf balls , third place today was won by Martin Collins with 33 points , he was bettered by John Rush into second place who also had 33 points but had a better back nine of 21 pts , our winner on the day was Keith Smith with 35 points , all received cash prizes , our soccer card to was won by Kay Ryan who had selected Coventry Finally we all returned to the Mini Golf Bar in Calle Los Arcos a few minutes from the Quesada Arches for a welcome couple of beers , sausage chips bread and butter, and flavoured with brown sauce that

CLUB DE GOLF EL PARAISO MATCH REPORT Today the newest Club on the Costa Blanca saw themselves at a very chilly and wind swept Alenda Golf where the sun was shining but the wind chill negated any heat. “El Paraiso” is not a new society, it is a formal club that is a member of the Spanish Federation and its members will receive many discounts at local golf courses, especially a huge saving on Green Fees of 20% (and more in one or two cases) when those members play courses on their own – or even with another society. The course was in quite good condition and surprisingly, fairly empty and we went round at quite a brisk pace, which was nice considering the chill in the air. Maybe the chill kept the local members away and in the warmth. El Paraiso sponsored the NTP’s and only 2 of the 4 were hit and a sleeve of golf balls went to Alex Alm and John Eyre. There was only one category today and considering the chilliness and the strength of the wind, there were, surprisingly a couple of decent scores and Per Skarnes’s 31 was enough to take 3rd place and a Pro Shop Voucher from La Marquesa. Colin Marsden’s 32 points was enough for second place and his reward was a free round of golf at La Marquesa. The winner was Jack Daroszewski scored an excel-
lent 34 points which secured him a gift voucher for the Pro shop at La Marquesa and a free game of golf at Villamartin. Photo: Competition winners Our next competition is on 14th December 2014 and will be at El Plantio where the Green Fee will be a miserly 35€ for those that like to walk and for those that require a buggy, add on an additional 10€. We have further competitions booked including a game on the 31st of December at Campoamor for 25€ for those wishing to walk and see out the Old Year with a game of golf. Bookings are now open telephone the Caddymaster on 661524101. or contact us on website www.clubdegolfelparaiso.com
LIMEBAR GOLF SOCIETY LOS ALTOS, ORIHUELA COSTA The golf societies venue for the 10th December 2014 was held at Vistabella Golf Course. Twenty plus members played off on a fine day but in a very cold wind which had an effect on a few players. The course was in good condition and as time progressed and it got warmer and play became much more enjoyable. The competition was in the stapleford format and the scores recorded are as follows. Nearest the pin in 2 on the 5th hole (par 4) was Mick Slater. Nearest the pin in 2 on the 9th hole (par 4) was Sean Ryan. Nearest the pin in 3 on the 13th hole (par 5) was Mike Heighway. Nearest the pin on the 15th hole (par 3) was Bill Dennie. Longest drive on hole 17 was John MacGregor. Nearest the pin in 3 on the 18th hole (par 5) was Paul Abbott. CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY This week for our Christmas Special we ventured to Las Ramblas for the first time in almost a year to play a stableford competition and 3 player team game. The weather was pleasantly warm with a light breeze and the course was generally in good condition except for the tee boxes which were completely bare meaning players were teeing off on sand and earth which was loose. This factor and the relative lack of knowledge of the course led to lower than average scores being returned. Nearest the pins were won by Dave Gibson, Tommy Clarke who also won the par 4 in 2 competition on the 9th hole and Roy Welburn who also won the par 5 in 3 on the 18th hole. The individual competition was won by Patricia Creegan, who also won the longest drive on the 17th, with 30 points on count back just beating Roy Welburn. The team competition was won by Pat Creegan, Del Blackman and Rab Hughes. In the evening we had a meal followed by the presentations which were: Most Improved player over the year Patricia Creegan. Most Nearest the pins Charlie Rodgers, Most Long Drives and par 4 in 2 Tommy Clarke, Player of the year Roy Welburn. Next week we are at La Serena meet at the bar at 08:00. had been provided by Ken & Lisa who have the Mini Golf bar .I would like to close by wishing Ken and Lisa all the very best with another venture of their’s , being the re opening of Sam’s bar , Sam’s Bar has now been completely refurbished and is well worth a visit , we are located at the back of Avda de las Naciones behind Don Carlos bar
Gold Class 3rd place was Bill Dennie with a score of 28 points. Gold Class 2nd place was Sean Ryan with a score of 31 points. Gold Class 1st place was Mike Heighway a score of 31 points.(on cback) A very good day of golf in pleasant company, with thanks to Captain Mick Slater for organising the event.
