IES IES PLA PLAY YA A FLA FLAMENCA MENCA TO TO O OPEN PEN THIS THIS YEAR YEAR

As work is still continuing on the site that stood abandoned for a number of years, the Department of Education in the Valencia regional government have this week stated that the new IES Playa Flamenca School will be opened this year, after more than a decade of teaching in portacabins. In April of last year we reported how the government promised to continue with their reduction plan for portacabin use, after a statement was issued explaining that more than 3,000 students across the

region are no longer being taught in prefabricated, portable classrooms, and are now educated in purpose built school buildings. The announcement also committed to eliminate 75% of this type of portacabin school by the end of the current administration, or in this, election year. Torrevieja has already seen the elimination of one of their temporary schools, although the community was far from pleased with having to move the pupils from their immediately local area to an amalgamated school which was reconstructed after being previously closed down. Acequión School, on their first day back in term the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, boasted about class sizes averaging just 25 students per class, whereas in Orihuela, where the investment had still not been made, some schools had class sizes of 42 pupils per teacher. On the Orihuela Costa parents and pupils alike have campaigned for years to try to have their voices heard, with the pupils of the IES Playa Flamenca already in their eleventh year of being taught in “temporary” accommodation,

having previously also seen class sizes increased, classrooms taken away and even facilities such as dining rooms which were unable to accommodate the children at meal times. Despite numerous requests for meetings with the education department requested by both the mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén of the Los Verdes green party, and the councillor for education, Rosa Martínez from the PSOE, information and official commitment from the PP led regional government had never been given, until this latest public announcement this

The Executive Committee of the Partido Popular in Orihuela has appointed José Francisco Pérez Espinosa as their new interim President, following the expulsion of Pepa Ferrando from the party after she led a renegade group to defy party policy and refuse to vote in an anticorruption motion. However, Dámaso Aparicio who was appointed as the temporary president by the regional group held a press conference in which he claims to be the rightful holder of the title, and therefore the President of the Orihuela PP group, as the votes for Pérez Espinosa were illegal, on account of the provincial group appointing him and the vote should not have taken place as it was held by those members affiliated with Ferrando, who is expelled. Aparicio was also forced to threaten Ferrando this week, demanding the return of keys to the local Partido Popular offices and passwords to computers, after the locks to the building had been mysteriously changed. Those members involved in the refusal to vote in the anticorruption motion have so far been seen standing beside Ferrando, after she said that she would not be forced to vote in the motion by her national and regional executive, who are attempting to clean up

their image before the elections in May. Along with Ferrando, David Costa, Encarnación Ortuño, Araceli Vilella, Victor Bernabéu, José Antonio Aniorte all left the plenary meeting on the 22nd of December and avoided the vote in the motion which was tabled for a second time after the CLR party hijacked the original proposal and managed to steer the motion in a different manner, subsequently forcing the vote once again. Pedro Mancebo from CLR abstained from the second vote, whereas his political colleague, Juan Ignacio López Bas also left the meeting and didn´t vote, Mónica Lorente from the PP was not present at the meeting due to ill health, and also therefore didn´t vote. At the time when the anticorruption motion was being discussed, the courts also announced an investigation into yet another contract award in Orihuela, in which it is once again alleged that the former ruling Partido Popular government may have split contracts into smaller amounts so as to circumvent the public tender process. This latest case revolves around the total award of 369,267.50 euro for work to convert the Palacio Sorzano de Tejada into a museum. Following a complaint by the current PSOE – Los Verdes government coalition, the prosecutor wishes to ascertain why the amount was divided between 5 different companies, despite the work being in the same building and for the same project. According to the complaint made in September, the division of the work could

have been designed to circumvent the need for a public tender that would have allowed the free competition of enterprises, in accordance with the law on procurement in the public sector. The prosecutor has requested all documents relating to this latest complaint for work between 2010 and 2011, whilst the municipality was under the management of Mayor Mónica Lorente, and cites Pepa Ferando, as well as David Costa and Rodríguez Barberá. Meanwhile, Aparicio has said that the matter of presidency and membership will be resolved this week, when the recognized officials of the local group meet with the regional heads to try to close this latest chapter of confusion and upheaval and then try to focus on the job required by politicians, representing the people they serve.

The Next Meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL will take place this coming Thursday, 15th January, at the Emerald Isle, La Florida with a 7pm for 7.30 pm start.

week. Although the news will be celebrated by those attending the educational system on the Orihuela Costa, it is also seen by many as being too late, as the generation of pupils who suffered at the hands of an inferior and under invested system are now starting to come of age and capable of voicing their dissatisfaction in a very different way, as the young people of today are the voters of tomorrow, many of those who were educated in the portacabins are now eligible to vote and may well choose not to support those who they feel have failed them.

ORIHUELA COSTA COUNCILLOR HITS BACK The new ‘Dog Agility Park’ at La Florida was just one of the many improvements achieved on the coast during the current term of office

In response to claims by Bob Houliston that the overview printed in The Leader before Christmas was nothing more than propaganda, the Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, wanted to clear up some of the criticisms raised... My 2 pages were supposed to be an overview of WHAT HAS BEEN DONE. Of course we could fill many pages mentioning what still needs to be done and I am more than aware of it. We certainly could NOT fill a lot of space with what Mr. Houliston has done while he was the councillor for the Coast. I am always more than surprised to read or listen to his comments, because he gives the impression of being a citizen without any kind of background knowledge, without any kind of access to specific information regarding specific matters and as it seems also without any kind of knowledge regarding legal schedules such as the ones to open the walkway at Bellavista. But this is not the case. In fact I answer every question he raises, he knows the legal procedures, he knows for example that the Bellavista walkway matter has reached its final stage, published in the BOE (official paper of the Government) and that the last allegations of the owners were handed in and have to be informed. Orihuela has one library run by the Consellería of Valencia. All big cities by law have to have one municipal library. This is a law existing for MANY YEARS. Orihuela has this municipal library ONLY since LAST YEAR. Mr. Houliston knows this as well. I think that our small library run by volunteers who do a great job, and with donated books, is a very good Project and I think the way Mr. Houliston talks about it (I am not sure if he has even ever been there)

is a great offense to all those who try to run this place. I do not agree with the fact that the Civic Centre of La Aparecida is paid out of the total of investments; I have stated this in several occasions. I have never said that Orihuela Costa does not need a Civic Centre / auditorium, but I think that at the present moment there are other, far more urgent things, to do as a priority. Let's remember: He was the first from CLR-Claro to join the coalition to start the government, without waiting for his partner Mr. Mancebo. He abandoned his job as Councillor for the Coast after only 8 months. So what's about fighting for the rights of Orihuela Costa???? He joined in with Mónica Lorente to make a "government from the opposition". He objected to the motion of censure and it is true that this is the reason why we are still in government. And knowing that we are a minority government (8 members out of 25), and that I from the Green Party (Los Verdes) are a "minority in the minority" (2 out of the 8) he who abandoned his councillor job - is asking me to fight more for the Costa and to change government's decisions? I would be pleased if he could explain to me how I should do this.

Although there was no evidence that the pilot had consumed alcohol immediately before taking control of the plane, he had been on a “three-day drinking binge” and was still affected by the alcohol consumed.

FROZEN ASSET The multi-national Swiss food group Nestle has sold its popular Spanish frozen food brand La Cocinera to Findus Spain, as part of its ongoing portfolio review. The deal is for their frozen products, which are currently produced in their factory in Valladolid, but Nestle will retain the chilled dough products.

OH DEAR! A Spanish pop rock group known previously as the Deers have been forced to change their name in order to avoid confusion with a Canadian group, the Dears. The Deers revealed this week that they received a legal threat from the representatives of the Dears asking them to stop calling themselves the Deers or the Dears would take legal action. From here on in, the Deers will be known as the Hinds.

La Zenia was served by buses on the N-332 long before the road was widened, but once the new section was opened to traffic, there had been no facilities created for buses in this area, largely blamed on the fact that the town hall had never requested them to be put back as part of the widening project around a decade ago. In fact, as previously reported, the so called General Plan of Orihuela still shows the N-332 in its smaller, single-lane carriageway state, as the plans were never previously adjusted. Buses still stopped on the road to allow passengers to board and alight, but with frequent fines, congestion and a risk to the safety of road users, the bus operator decided that stopping on the illegal site where the stops should be was no longer a viable option. Now, the final project to reintroduce the bus stops, as well as additional parking for 24 cars at La Zenia, have been sent to the ministry of streets in Alicante for final approval. The project cost is 126,000 euro, which is a considerable amount and, according to the Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, would have been a cost covered as part of the original widening plans, had the then government requested them, as was the case in other municipalities who enjoyed a bus serv-

THREE KINGS NEWS THREE KINGS ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA This year´s Three Kings parade on the Orihuela Costa was once again enjoyed by the many residents and visitors who braved the slightly chilly, though sun drenched eve of the Three Kings celebrations. Before the parade began, their majesties posed for a photograph along with the Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer from the Los Verdes green party of Orihuela, before taking their place upon their selected floats. Safety was a prime concern as always, but the volunteers from the Judo Club Nozomi were seen doing an excellent job marshalling the parade route, making sure everybody was kept out of harm’s way, whereas the Local Police praised not only those who attended for their behaviour, but

also the route and organisation which was praised as being a vast improvement in terms of public order and manageability. Despite there being more adults than children enjoying the spectacle, the Kings still dispensed their goodies as they made their way through the streets, accompanied by dancing girls and boys, drummers and fire eaters and a selection of wildlife, culminating in their arrival at the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre. Once there, the children were found waiting eagerly to see their King, on the promise that their good behaviour will be rewarded, and indeed it was as every child received a gift for their visit. As the official Christmas season now comes to a close, attentions turn once again to the New Year and focus on the next twelve months of being good.

KING BALTHAZAR KILLED IN CABLE COLLISION A 20 year old man, whose identity has not been released, is said to have been killed on Monday evening, when acting as one of the Three Kings in the Almería town of Nijar. Officials say that the float that King Balthazar was riding on hit overhead cables on the parade route, and overturned under the pressure of the collision. The man was confirmed to have died from his

injuries in hospital on Tuesday, the day of the Three Kings holiday. This is yet another tragic end to the annual parade, after security was stepped up following the death of a 6 year old boy, who died after being hit by a float in Málaga´s Three Kings parade in January, 2013.

DRUNK THREE KINGS AMBULANCE DRIVER ARRESTED A Cruz Roja ambulance driver is set to appear in court in Dénia on Tuesday, after being found drunk whilst covering emergency provision at a Three Kings parade in the town of Teulada, located between Calpe and Xábia. Moreover, the driver and the ambulance were unable to attend an incident just 100 metres away, on account of the driver being intoxicated, it is alleged. A child had suffered an injury and so the emergency ambulance on standby was called, but there was no response. The local police attended the scene and upon locating the driver they believed that alcohol had been consumed and that the driver of the ambulance was over the legal alcohol

limit, but they were unable to carry out a test on account of not having any equipment to do so. The Guardia Civil attended and conducted an alcohol test, which reveal that the driver had quadruple the permitted amount, registering 0.78 milligrams of alcohol in the blood, whereas the maximum for a driver of this kind of vehicle is 0.15. The local police of Teulada have been campaigning for some time to have access to alcoholmeters, which would have led to a speedier conclusion in this case, as well as many others, without having to wait for the assistance of the Guardia Civil. It is also alleged that the driver did not have the appropriate certification to act as an ambulance technician for such a parade, after new legislation came into force in the New Year.

TORREVIEJA LOSS OF STATUS CONFIRMED According to the latest official data released by the Spanish national statistics institute, Torrevieja ended 2014 with 91,415 residents. It was in June of last year that that we first reported the threat to the population statistics of Torrevieja, after the INE carried out a cleanup and audit of the figures which were believed to not correctly reflect the current number of residents in local government areas, in an attempt to correct the amount of subsidy received by both central and regional governments. At the time, Orihuela government acknowledged that they had lost around 8,000 residents as a result of an audit by the INE, but Torrevieja chose not to make the findings of their audit public at the time, despite speculation that they looked set to lose some 15,000 residents from the 1st of January 2015, the equivalent of 14% of the population, dropping from 105,000 to 91,400 registered residents. Torrevieja started 2014 with a registered population of 105,205 people, but the figures released by the INE now

show the official reduction, which means that Torrevieja not only loses its “big city” status, now being below the 100,000 threshold will result in a considerable drop in the amount of money the town hall receives from both residential taxes and from the national and regional governments. They will also lose 2 councillor posts, dropping from 27 elected positions to 25. Torrevieja still maintains its third place position in terms of population size however, behind Elche with 228,647 and Alicante with 332,067 residents. Orihuela, which is in fourth place in terms of population size, closed 2014 with 83,417 registered residents, recovering most of those lost in their recent audit cull, now a little below the 91,260 residents at the start of last year. Benidorm is the fifth placed municipality in population terms, although it too has dropped to 69,010 residents from the 73,768 at the start of the year, and across the province of Alicante, there are now a total registered population of 1,868,438 residents.

LA VUELTA TO VISIT TORREVIEJA For its 70th anniversary, the 2015 cycling Tour of Spain will be visiting Torrevieja on the ninth day of the event which will take place on the 30th of August, the first time the tour has visited the area since 2011. On day eight, the race will take the riders through Murcia, where they will then transfer to Torrevieja for the next stage which will see them leave the city heading towards Cumbre del Sol in Benitaxell. Orihuela Costa played host to the cyclist in both 2010 and 2011, when the final stage reached the region. The race will start in the Málaga town of Puerto Banús on the 22nd August, as presented this week by members of the

Diputación de Málaga, with the second and third stages also taking place in the Málaga area. The route then heads towards Cádiz and Córdoba, then east to Murcia and Torrevieja, via Granada. Having then left Torrevieja, the cyclists will head north along the coast towards Valencia and Castellón, before taking in the north of the country, finishing in Madrid on the 13 Sep.

OH NURSE York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the latest hospital in the UK to admit to targeting European nurses, especially those from Spain, after they admit to struggling to sign up trained staff locally. The trust says that it is finding it increasingly difficult to find staff for specialisms such as A&E and care for the elderly as all hospitals are attempting to recruit from the same pool of trained nurses. Nationally many hospital trusts have confirmed they are recruiting nurses from within the EU and last year it was estimated ten per cent of the nurses and midwives working for the NHS had trained overseas. The Royal College of Nursing has suggested that recruiting from Europe is nothing more than a “sticking plaster” for the worrying lack of trained nurses in the UK.

FOREIGN BUYERS FACING HIGHER RISK OF DEMOLITION IN ALMERIA? AUAN, Press Release A startling 31% of all properties demolished in Almeria in the last eight years belonged to British buyers even though that nationality represents less than 3% of the population.

This statistic emerged from information provided by the Provincial Planning Inspectorate in November last year when it revealed that 14 properties were demolished in Almeria in the last eight years due to planning irregularities. This figure later grew to 16 properties when two

more villas were demolished in Las Terreras, Cantoria on 18th November. Of the 16 properties demolished to date, the Inspectorate stated that 11 (9 houses and 2 warehouses) belonged to Spanish citizens whilst the remaining 5 houses were the property of British nationals, representing some 31% of the total. This figure becomes significant when one considers that Britons resident in Almeria represent some 2.78% of the overall population according to the latest information from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). ‘It appears that foreign buyers are markedly more vulnerable to ending up with an illegal house’ said Maura Hillen, President of the home owners group, AUAN. ‘This is one of a number of issues that our association is asking the European Union to investigate as a matter of urgency’. ‘Of course, behind the dry statistics lies misery for five families. On January 9th Helen and Len Prior will spend their seventh year in their garage without compensation for the loss of their home. This year four more families now share their fate. It begs the question….. How many more demolitions can the market or indeed foreign buyers tolerate? The government needs to get to the bottom of the problems with the property market and fix them sooner rather than later. Purchasers in good faith need protection.’ she concluded.

THE 2015 COR VERA OPENING PROMISE The Minister of Development, Public Works and Planning in the region of Murcia, Francisco Bernabé, has this week stated that “if all goes well” and that the problems relating to the competition award and compensation are resolved by the summer, then the opening of the new regional airport at Corvera could be a reality by the end of this year. Although promises and commitments have been made for some time now, this latest announcement is seen as a firm commitment to the finalising of the project, as Bernabé said that there is “no turning back”. It is believed that the new and final specifications for the airport operation will be completed by the end of February, and although there are “no official or unofficial meetings planned” a settlement on contract terms needs to be done in order to reintegrate the expenses. Bernabé also stated that the government are prepared to meet the financial demands, but the government has to arbitrate formulas to make payments, either directly or indirectly. With the backing of the Spanish airport authority AENA, now interested in operating the airport, Bernabé says that the government are confident that Corvera will become a “first class” airport with “superb facilities and traffic potential” with a future of significant growth.

AENA REFUSING TO CLOSE QUIET AIRPORTS Spanish airport authority AENA has stated that they will not close down some of their least profitable airports in Spain, despite the demands of the European Union. Auditors from the EU reported that there are nine airports which should be closed down, on account of them failing to achieve the minimum 100,000 passenger count. The airports under threat are located at Badajoz, León, Burgos, Salamanca, Logroño, Vitoria, Córdoba, Albacete and Huesca. The busiest of the airports is Badajoz, registering 36,934 passengers up until November of 2013, whereas Huesca is the quietest with just 259 passengers. The cost of keeping the airports open is 69.9 million euro per year, with an accumulating debt of 756 million euro, plus interest. AENA has said that it has no plans to close any of the airports named, despite the number of passengers at each of the airports being far from reaching a scale of profitability. In addition to the 100,000 passenger threshold demanded by Europe, AENA is also being threatened by the Spanish government, who are insisting they modify efficiency plans at airports with fewer than 500,000 passengers. These plans focus on three key performance indicators, namely related to time, flexibility in working hours and mobility, amalgamating common services across the network, and increasing the surface space available for retail outlets. The government has also approved a change to the legislation relating to charging airlines to use airports, equalling the rates around the clock, irrespective of day or night, in the hope of eliminating afterhours supplements, with the aim of encouraging daytime operations at airports that currently focus more on night flights in a view to save operating costs for the airlines.

SPANISH HIGH-SPEED RAIL SET FOR MAJOR EXPANSION

The Spanish high-speed train network, known as the 'Ave', is set to expand by around 30 percent this year with a further 1000 kilometers of high-speed track set to connect an additional eight cities, including Leon, Palencia, Zamora and Burgos (all in the north/north-west of central Spain), as well as all of the major cities in the far north-western community of Galicia. Reaching speeds of 300 kilometers an hour, the pride of the Spanish national railway system, connects Madrid and Barcelona and Madrid and Sevilla with journey times of around 2 and a half hours. Total spending of 3.5 billion euros, 48 percent up on last year, will also see an east-coast line connecting Valencia, Castellon, Alicante and Murcia, while the Madrid -- Seville link will also be included in the network continuing down to Cadiz and the historic city of Granada.

285 million euros of the spending will come from EU grants, despite doubts that some of the Ave stations which have been built, such as Guadalajara and Camp de Tarragona on the Madrid - Barcelona route and Requena/Utiel on the Valencia line are white elephants, costing millions of euros, but which are situated several kilometers from the towns they serve and attracting very low passenger numbers. The first Ave line to be opened was that between Madrid and Seville, which coincided with Seville hosting the 1992 EXPO exhibition and recent developments have seen the network expanded to include Zaragoza, Barcelona and Huesca to the north east. That line was linked to the French SNCF network just over a year ago and it is now possible to travel from Madrid to Paris by high-speed train, changing in Barcelona.

PP STILL LEADS THE WAY FOLLOWING RECENT POLL In the most recent opinion poll published at the weekend by pollsters NC Report, based on interviews with 1,600 Spaniards, and carried out over the Christmas period, the ruling Partido Popular (PP) came out on top polling 28.6% of those interviewed, one of their strongest showings in recent surveys, but still a huge reduction on the 44.6% majority with which they won the 2011 elections. The Socialists (PSOE) and left-wing newcomers Podemos, just a year old, were in close second and third place with 23.4% and 23.2% respectively. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's party does not have a big rival on the right of the political spectrum, and a large problem for the PP would be abstention with around a fifth of those who voted for the PP in 2011 saying they would abstain this time round. The poll also showed that support for the Socialist PSOE party has been badly sapped by Podemos with their vote down from the 28.8% recorded 4 years ago. Of those who voted for the Socialists in the last general election, 18.7 would now choose Podemos, the poll showed. Meanwhile in Orihuela Julio Vicente has been elected as the new secretary general of Podemos with 66.4% of support, taking 176 of the 279 votes cast. There were three other applicants for the party leadership, Concha Bernal, María Concepción Espinosa and Francisco Gomez. Following announcement of the result Concha Bernal congratulated Vicente on behalf of all the candidates saying that it is now time to work together and take Podemos to the people.

GUARDIA WARN OF NEW PROPERTY TAG PLOY The Guardia Civil are advising that they have identified a new method of “tagging” properties during an operation in La Rioja, although it is likely that the method will spread to other parts of the country. It would appear that would-be burglars are wedging a small piece of transparent plastic in the door of the property. The idea is that upon their return in a few days, if the plastic has been moved or fallen, then the likelihood is that the door has been opened, thus indicating that the property is in use. However, should the plastic remain in situ, then the likelihood is that the door has not been opened since it was placed in position, therefore indicating that the property has not been used or remains vacant, thus suggesting that a break-in would go unnoticed. The “tag” has been identified as having been used on both domestic and commercial properties, and even of outhouses and sheds. Investigators from the Guardia Civil are working to identify those responsible for this new method, although it should also be noted that the choice of indicator may not be clear plastic, but that is what has been identified so far. The crime prevention section of the Guardia Civil offer typical advice for ensuring your home or business is protected: Make sure doors and windows are firmly closed and locked. Always close the door using the key, not only with the catch. Do not leave evidence that the house is uninhabited, such as turning off the electricity or allowing mail to accumulate in the post box, perhaps asking a trusted friend or neighbour to remove any items.

If you live outside a village or isolated developments, a properly trained dog may deter thieves. Do not leave objects at home and create an inventory of high-value goods, including serial numbers, makes, models, details and even photographs of jewellery or other objects that allow their identification in case of being recovered after theft. Do not open your door, portal or access to urbanizations to unknown people, as this jeopardizes your safety and that of your neighbours. Be wary of who comes to your home to sell you something, representing associations or aid agencies, or alleged utility workers (electricity, water, telephone, gas) you have not previously requested. If you notice marks on doors or gates, either yours or a neighbour´s, or unusual noises in unoccupied houses, notify the police or Guardia Civil, whilst also making a note of anything suspicious, including strange or unidentified vehicles and their registration number. If you have been robbed at home, stay calm and do not enter the house or touch or move anything that may have been manipulated by thieves and immediately advise the police or Guardia Civil. You can contact the Guardia Civil on their telephone number, 062, which is publicly available 24 hours a day, or in the event of an emergency dial 112, where you can also be attended to in English.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Let them eat Gold Christmas and the New Year holiday season is a time of year when the stark contrast between those who have and those who have not pricks the conscience of most of us, if only fleetingly. It may be the homeless man on the street, or the woman outside the supermarket begging for coins to buy food to feed her children that draws our attention to the poverty and plight of many people around us. These are not people living in some far off continent, but real people who live, and try to survive in our own communities. In the Canary Juan Morena is the coowner of the bakery in Algatocin

Islands, Spain and the UK, food banks may be the only and last refuge for the needy and desperate. Most of us are fortunate in having enough to survive, and it may not be wealth or excess, but hopefully we can feed ourselves, our families, and have a roof over our heads. Unemployment in the Canary Islands and Spain remains very high, and is particularly shocking for the lost generation of young people who have been worst hit by the world’s financial crisis. No civilised society should tolerate such a waste of energy, enthusiasm and talent as we are currently seeing in relatively wealthy European countries, but it seems that the rich and powerful are unable or unwilling to do anything significant to change it. In the UK and Spain we often hear about the “on going years of austerity”, which leaves many to question whether austerity is a desirable state of affairs from the point of view of the political elite. Is it designed to keep the working classes in their place, profits high and wages low to benefit those in power, as well as those who are better educated or just fortunate? The Canarian village that I live in is not a wealthy one. Many of its residents are unemployed, or have just one member of the household bringing in a low wage; that is if they are fortunate. Working hours are long and working conditions are mostly poor in a range of activities from hotel catering, fishing and seasonal agriculture. Even so, the villagers recognise that there are many within their community who have very little to survive on and they organised a ‘Solidarity Gala’ to support the needy during the festive season. The price of entry? No cash, because there is very little to spare; the entry fee was just one kilogramme of unopened food. I contrast this heart warming attempt to do something positive about real poverty in a community, to a sickening account of a bakery in Andalusia, Spain, that is baking loaves of bread cooked with gold dust, which is being sold for 117 euros for each loaf to the rich, wealthy or powerful. It is being promoted as the ‘world’s most expensive’, with loaves selling like ‘hot cakes’ to Arab, Russian and Chinese buyers. Each 400 gram loaf of bread contains whole wheat dough and dehydrated honey. It addition, it contains one additional ingredient: 250 milligrams of gold dust, allegedly worth €100. As well as receiv-

ing considerable interest from foreign buyers, a national supermarket chain is also showing interest in stocking and selling the product. I guess that the same could be said about expensive watches, mobile phones, perfumes and cars, and I may be lacking a sense of humour and realism this festive season. However, I find the ‘upgrade’ and sale of such a basic and essential product as bread to be a callous disregard of the poverty and hunger that surrounds us. There should be no need for food banks, since there is more than enough food for everyone to share if we reduce our own consumption and greed, and curb such frivolous, pointless nonsense, such as eating gold. For many families in the world, a decent loaf of bread would be more than enough to satisfy them for a day or two. Now, where did I read that eating gold is actually toxic to the human system? If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). Available as paperback, Kindle and iBooks. iPhone/iPad and Android Apps: ExpatInfo, CanaryIsle and CanaryGay now available. © Barrie Mahoney Each 400 gram loaf of bread contains 250 milligrams of gold dust, allegedly worth 100 Euro.

UK’S FIRST EVER NATIONAL POTHOLE DAY www.StreetRepairs.co.uk is launching a national pothole day on the 15th of January. This initiative is being co-ordinated by Colin Mahoney managing director at the award winning Street Repairs website. Mr Mahoney stated “many thousands of our followers and supporters have asked us to highlight the seriousness of this major problem, so what better way to produce mass awareness by creating the UK’s very first Pothole day. I can honestly say that public sentiment is very high in relation to this major issue. More than 87% of reports made by the public to the Street Repairs website relate to potholes” The RAC identified early on in its launch the intuitiveness of Street Repairs so much it incorporated the system into its own website. With the recent budget cuts to local authorities Street Repairs offers a free way for councils to engage with their constituents and action any defects which are reported in real time. Street Repairs was launched just over a year ago and in this short time it has experienced exponential growth. This is largely down to public sentiment and the fact that Street Repairs is an independent body free from constraints. Transparency and clarity is the cornerstone for the website as every report made is publicly published via all social media channels includ-

ing Twitter, facebook and of course their own website. Local authorities have the ability to respond to the reporter by simply logging in and making a reply. It also offers the reporter the opportunity to track their report. In order to make it very easy for everyone to make a report the developers at Street Repairs have created an intuitive mobile phone application which can be downloaded at any app store. Mr Mahoney continued to say “this is a perfect opportunity for the general public to showcase what their roads and communities are really like. We would like as many people as possible to join our campaign by highlighting local issues quickly and easily”. You can download the free app and report potholes here http://streetrepairs.co.uk/national-pothole-day

Fans of country music are in for a treat on Exite Radio, as we have extended our Sunday afternoon country session to a whole two hours, thanks to a new addition to our schedules, the Tim Rogers “Classic Country” International Radio Show. Tim Rogers started his broadcasting career at Radio Trent, Nottingham, and in 1979 went on to also broadcast on Xtra AM in Birmingham and eventually was to be found on Gem Am in the East Midlands. 2015 - ANOTHER YEAR FOR POSITIVE ENERGY AND THOUGHTS

2012 was all about change and the world did not come to an end on 21st December as many thought it would and since that day and now entering 2015, the energy has changed to become more positive which meant that we all needed to concentrate on what we wanted for ourselves, our families, friends and all around us and we made those wishes happen. Finance is one of the big worries at this time and these worries are mainly global so be wise with your personal finances and help others, not necessarily with money, if in need. Give your love and positive thoughts to others around you and watch what happens. Peace is another change that needs to concentrated on too at this time. ANGELS are an important part of these changes and are still all around us as the healing takes place. Remember that Angels are a powerful means of personal development and empowerment and it is a blessing to work with, connect with and heal with these wonderful celestial beings. ANGELS . Who believes in angels, and how many of you would like to connect to angels? ANGELS are everywhere. Where? Around us, within us and we can use angels as a powerful means of personal development, transformation, and in all aspects of our lives. So many questions....what are angels, what is their purpose, what are they made of, how many are there, do I have a guardian angel, can I see them, can we ask for help. All these questions and more will be answered at the series of workshops I shall be holding starting Saturday 1st February from 3.00 – 5.00 and for 8 weeks at The Dojo in Quesada. There will be medita-

tions to connect to angels, feel their presence and you will get to heal one another with your personal archangel. If you want to attend these series of workshops, you will get the chance to meet and work more in depth on how to feel, hear and see your angels. I will also be holding one day workshops in April. This planet of ours need healing, past issues that are resurfacing need to be cleared and we will be able to help in this with the help of our personal angels and groups of angels that can be called on at this time. There is an infinite number of angels. The earth's population is about 6.8 billion so assuming that we all have our own guardian angel that means there are at least 6.8 millions angels plus the millions that help with projects, cities and sacred sites, so that makes a lot of angels...and you can meet yours. There will also be Archangel Michael attunements and Michael is the great Angel of Protection. These workshops will enable you to feel the energy, work with a partner, and importantly connect to the energy produced. You will be able to attune others to Archangel Michael ..so what a wonderful gift to share with family members and friends All of you reading this can be part of these new workshops now so if any of you want any further information about the workshops and to

be part of this wonderful angelic energy, please contact me, on 966 795 103 or email bodyharmony@tinyworld.co.uk or you can contact directly to The Dojo, Quesada for advance bookings on thedojoquesada@hotmail.co.uk or call 672 096 053 I am a Reiki Master/Teacher and Angelic Reiki healer. As we know it’s a time definitely for the kids but the old ones can still enjoy themselves, well illustrated by the 3000 plus expats down on La Zenia beach, Christmas day. James Brown and Bliss Wright from Gogarty´s were there dishing out the bubbly to all and sundry which was very nice, thank you, whilst Gilly Kirby looked very fetching in her Chrissy outfit, escorted by crutch wielding hubby Terry, who unfortunately is still struggling after a knee operation last year. We wish him well. The scene was relayed back to the UK via Ipod, the recipients begrudgingly saying how marvellous it all looked, as they shivered in sub-zero temperatures. Many of you would have witnessed the PDC World Championships on SKY TV at Ally Pally over the holiday and what an event it was. Actors, footballers, cricketers, boxers, snooker players, even Prince Harry was spotted phoning Grandma with the results. It was great to witness all the celebrities absorbing the electric atmosphere of the 250K competition. Gary Anderson was one of my fancies, as was “jackpot” Adrian Lewis, but it was the Scotsman who came out on top with an outstanding performance against Phil the Power Taylor. The preceding three plus Michael Van Gerwen will make for an interesting 2015 Premier League. Anderson, even with the World Championship belt around him will probably not start favourite, that accolade will more than likely go to Taylor, with the Dutchman second favourite. Exciting times for darts. Back to us mere mortals of the Euronics League and the resumption of our Thursday night darts. Breakaways seem to have a stranglehold on Division 2 and remain unbeaten, despite dropping a home point to

DAY OF THE JACKALS - Steph Simpson and Phil de Lacy John Williams Evolution. Biggest change in this division is Que Pasa Kestrels moving up to third after a fine away victory over the Jaguars who have now suffered consecutive losses. The Kestrels notched up their fifth victory of the season after never being behind against their tough opponents. Alan Preston´s D12 gave the Kestrels their first leg, which was immediately cancelled out by Wendy Hayward on D2 after a 95, Dee Green supporting well. Russell Lyness retrieved the lead for the visitors, dove tailing well with Preston who did most of the scoring. Some tasty scores from Sharon Bugg and Hayward proved insufficient against the Kirbys, crutches and all. Terry did all the scoring, how I don’t know, wife Gilly completing the 601 on D7. Heath Hughes made it 4 for the Kestrels on D2, Preston once again helping out on the T20s. Angela Craggs and Hilda Wilkinson pulled one back for the hosts, the latter taking out D5 after both had scored well. Hughes made it 5 against a below par Pat Schofield, Hayward enjoying a fine 501 versus Lyness, eventually pegging out on D1 after some great scoring. Long John Silver ensured the draw for the visitors, the hosts having a strong trio remaining hoping to gain the draw and a point. It started well with Simone de Lacy scoring heavily to leave 40, Chris miles behind. The confident de Lacy found D5 instead of the intended D20 but then a smart S10 was followed by D10 for a nice piece of showboating with just two legs required for the draw. Long John´s wife Gilly, spoilt it all by hitting D11 for the match after a nice 121 setting up the finish. Tracy Simpson made it 5 for the hosts on D19, taking out the in-form Preston. Sporting Life entertained the Ale House who had several players influenced by the goings on at the Ally Pally. Ian Phillips obviously watched the most and was nominated man of the match scoring 4x100,120 and 85 proving he does miss occasionally. He was well supported by Brandon Radford 85,95,100, Bernie Whipday 4x85 and Luke Yarnold´s numerous scores of 81-95. A fine effort and victory against Sonya Cooper´s Misfits. The Tavern Drivers did their leg difference no harm at all by taking all 12 against the hung over Queens. The long journey from the Palace to the Villamartin venue of the Taverners took its toll. Ann O´Keefe, Lorraine Cox and Debbie Wright were the Queens top scorers in the first three triples but they were more than matched by the hosts who pegged out the 701s via Ian Brown D19, Stu Mitchell D4 and Rick Cox. Brown added a ton and double in the first pairs with the second looking to go the Royal family´s way after a 103 from Chris Cummins to leave 30 points. Despite the usual Royal barracking Justin Hepburn found D8 to make it 5 for the Tavern. Margaret Griffith and Lynn Fozzard outscored their opponents in the next scoring 565 points to leave 36, which then seemed to be beyond them. The 601 proved just as difficult for the hosts, but eventually Paul Birtwhistle made it 6 up at half time on D2. Brown faced Marie Dunne in the first single after the break, both players scoring well to leave 36 apiece. With the

LEADER By Paul Durrant

match depending on the leg, Brown calmly took out D18 for both points. Birtwhistle D2 continued the rout Cox sitting on 44. And so it continued, Queen Debbie was dethroned by Rick Cox as was Rachael Broadhead by Hepburn. Mitchell D9 made it 11, leaving Zack Green to face O´Keefe. The Royal one acquitted herself well scoring wise, but it was Green who made it to the double first, planting his second arrow in D9 for all 12 legs. Despite Mark Filer missing from the Busters line up, the visitors must have expected a win after going 3 up playing the Porter House. Irene Russell D8, Henry Young D4 and Peter O´Rourke D10, the latter adding a ton, Babs Warren a 123, Ray Harvey a ton were the players doing all the damage. Brian Nash pulled one back in the first pair hitting 100,136 with partner Mike Newberry. Yvonne Rouffignac made it 2 for the home side on D7 after 2x100. Sid Cross made it all square at the break on D2 to add to his ton achieved in the triples. Porters took the lead for the first time courtesy of Newberry taking out O´Rourke 2-1 on a 62 out, despite the Busters three tons. Rouffignac made it 5 for the Porters, beating Bill Russell 2-0. Nash was unlucky not to make it 6 after 2x100,140 and the middle leg on D14 against formidable opposition in Harvey whose lone ton plus D16 and D20 made it 5-4. Irene Russell made it all square after going one down to Ray Sanderson. Her D2,D8 and 2x125 too much for the Porters captain. Cross ensured at least a point for the hosts, winning 2-0 against Warren on D20,D9 and 100,121,125. The match rested on the 12th leg Young v. Sue Sanderson. The former came out on top, securing the draw and point on D10 and D2. Gary Minor and Matt Cummins came to the Kings rescue once again winning both their singles 2-1 and 2-0 respectively. Unfortunately they were the only winning legs against second placed Hub Hyenas. Cummins 2x100 was eclipsed by Minor´s 2x100,125 and 2x140. Frankie Wieczorek contributed a 137. Spicy Nick Spicer who loves a vindaloo and doesn’t mind who knows it, won the match for the Hyenas against an out of sorts Ian Sleath, using D8 and D10. His tally of 4x100 and 120 was supported by Joe Miller´s 3x100, Simon Williams 120,138 and exiled Meerkat John Eyre´s 100,121,140. Cummins won the last leg of the evening on D6 and D4 against old Bristolian Dave Lethaby, who really prefers a round at La Finca instead of finding the T20 on the dart board. Meerkats remain top, Alex Nikolov securing the win on D10 for both points in the 12th leg. Another lack lustre performance from the champions who can´t seem to find their previous form, despite a reasonable tally of 18 tons or more. Lee Maiden was the Kats man of the match hitting 4x100,121 and 133. Steph Simpson was the Jackals man of the match consistently scoring 80 plus throughout the night and also taking the scalp of Dave Frew, former Essex champion.

Did you ever wonder what petanca players get up to when not playing? Wonder no more..We all know that in Spain the most important date of the Christmas period is 5/6th January. The evening of the 5th is when all towns, villages and hamlets welcome the arrival of the 3 Kings. Families, especially with children, line the route the Kings will take in the hope of receiving sweets thrown by the Kings and then they can dash home to open any presents they may have been given. All local associations and groups are encouraged to take part and for the past 3 years various petanca clubs have taken part -- in a mixture of brilliant disguises!!! The Orihuela Costa parade was the one chosen by 4 members of Costa Knights, Peter and Susan Ward, Liz and Moss Davies, 1 member of Los Bandidos, Linda Haymes and 1 member of Pumas, Liz McPherson and oh a Crazy lady named Diane. Our little group were inspired by a suggestion of a member of Costa Knights - Janice - to wear 'onesies' being readily available and warm, it was a marvellous idea. So, as you see the animals on parade were - parrot, kangaroo, lion, penguin, zebra, giraffe and a bear. Each year the parade gets better and this year was no exception and the fireworks were a splendid highlight. We had a lot of fun, its such a happy occasion. Brandy, walk, brandy what could be better! Thank you to all who supported the parade and the hard work the Ayuntamiento put in. Petanca players who wish to take part next year, get in touch with Susan Ward (Costa Knights).

VISTABELLA BOWLS REPORT -

Mo and Martin Foulcer & Richard Lee, winners of the San Luis Triples comp. well done to our players who won their disciplines. Over the Christmas break we played our annual challenge Matches with Greenlands, playing one at home & one away, these are meant to be very friendly games with all the tinsel, silly hats and banter but at the end of the day we all want to win and I'm pleased to say on this occasion Vistabella won the trophy. An excellent end to 2014 and a good start to the new year for Vistabella!

SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB REPORT – Having had a quiet time over the holiday period, with no league matches, we were able to get back into the swing again with the San Luis Triples Tournament, well organised as usual by Keith Jones. Over three days (2nd – 4th January) 24 teams in 4 groups of 6, battled against each other. There were some very close and exciting matches but by Sunday afternoon the winners of each group were ready to play off in the semi-finals. The winner of group A (Colin Jackson, Kath Reid & skip Mal Hughes, SL) played the winner of group B (Pat Bird, Sheila Cammack & skip Graham Bird, SL) with Graham's team going through to the final. The other semi final was between group C winners (Sabrina Marks, Darren Johnson & skip Russell Marks, SL) and group D winners (Maureen “Mo” & Martin Fulcer & skip Richard Lee, VB) with Martin's team going through to the final. It was a great final to the competition, lots of oohs & ahhs from the supporters as the close play meant that many ends went to the last shot; there was the jack wedged between 2 opposing bowls for a tied end, also a re-spotted jack & at least 2 ditch measures. At first the San Luis team took the lead but gradually the Vistabella team pulled back and in a nail biting last end managed to secure the 2 shots needed to take the win. Well done to everyone who played & thanks to the supporters for their involvement & Frank Reid for organising the raffle. Hopefully we will all be fired up for the re-start of the league matches next week, includ-

TMGS AT LA MARQUESA GOLF CLUB What can one say when over 20 golfers turn up at La Finca, as per the calendar and start sheets on our website to find out that this isn’t the day we were supposed to be playing at that course? Yes, unfortunately, our Match Secretary suffered a senior moment and dare one say a brain fart? Anyway, to give him his due and thanks to his standing in the golfing world in this area, he was able to hastily get us booked in at La Marquesa where an enjoyable days golf was had by all and once again, the course was in very good condition and the service that they afford you is second to none; so one must say to Joe dean, well done on getting us a game. The 4 NTP’s were all won and the recipients of a sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels were Steve Higgins, Shelia Dean, David Qualey and Olga Haubner who had great delight in taking the NTP from the man that suffers the “Senior Moment”. However, he was to claim revenge by taking a share in the “Two’s” pot with Steve Higgins whom both took home the massive sum of 8€ each. The Best Guest of the day was J. Hettrick with 22 points.

The Silver Division was a fairly tight affair with the exception of one player. In 3rd spot, Jenny Morris only needed 30 points, 3 points ahead on 33 was our Austrian member “meine Schatz” Olga Haubner and way out in front with the best score of the day and a certain handicap cut was Alan Rickers with 38 points. The Gold Division was even tighter and the top 3 all recorded 35 points. In the past, we have resorted to the count-back system, but the committee decided that as we play under EGA rules, we should follow those rules in their entirety and the countback system was replaced by the EGA’s system of ‘lowest playing handicap’. John Eyre was placed 3rd, Jamie Rorison 2nd and the winner of the Gold Division was Steve Higgins who “suffered” a 1.2 cut in his handicap at that committee meeting. Photo: Nearest the Pin Winners Our next game, Wednesday 14th January 2015 is at La Serena for a 2 Ball Better Ball competition, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman Well 2015 has arrived and a very Happy New Year to anyone associated with Las Ramblas Golf Society and all readers of this report. What a change the new year has seen to our membership with several members including our President and Captain voting with their buggies and moving to other courses largely in protest to Las Ramblas deciding to introduce a charge of 200 euros for the use of their own buggies: a facility that has hitherto been free of charge. Although their departure is disappointing from a Club point of view we wish them all well and thank them for their efforts on our behalf over the past few years. Our first game of the week was a Team Counter Game where the number of scores on each hole is not known until reaching the next tee which can either be a relief or frustration depending on how the team has performed. The winning team was Alan Douglas, Joyce McClusky, Mike Chapman and guest Dave Lewis who contributed well to the excellent final score of 93 pts. We played our first Stableford game of the year on Wednesday and in cold yet otherwise good conditions for golf no one was able to beat par with the top scorer being Dave Pulling with 35 pts to win Category One. The days top three in each Category were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Dave Pulling 35 pts 2nd Alan Douglas 33 pts (c/b) 3rd Peter Dunn 33 pts Cat 2. 1st Brian Dent 31 pts 2nd Joyce McClusky 30 pts 3rd Ulrike Barth 28 pts 2's Club: Terry Cullen and Lindsay Forbes There was a jovial cry of 'oh no he's back' on Friday when Terry Field playing off scratch returned to the fold after a few months away. I was lucky enough to have been drawn in his 4 ball for a Texas scramble and it was no surprise that we came in with a 9 under par score of 63 gross which after reduction for handicap allowance gave us a superb score of 56.7 to win the competition. The full team was Terry Field, Mike Chapman, Friedel Knebel and Brian Dent. The 3 ball of Alan Douglas, Benedicte Kruse and Annemarie Weisheit also put in an excellent round finishing with 58.8 which on any other day would be a winning score.

LA ZENIA GOLF SOCIETY

Happy Days Golf Society By Lubbertus What an amazing start to the 2015 season. The course at Las Colinas, blending in perfectly with the landscape and hills provided a perfect setting for the Captains drive. And the new Captain for 2015, Ray Coupleditch, didn’t disappoint with a long first drive of 230 yards straight down the centre of the fairway. Sadly for Ray, the fairways and undulating greens meant that this was his only honour on the day. The perfect course led to some great play from the other team members who obviously were not about to allow him to capitalise on such a great shot. First place on the day went to Ken Farrow with 35 points, followed closely by Dave Naylor on 33, and Don Martin on 32. Steve Dixon

www.yourlocalnewspaper.info

only achieved fourth place on count back with 31 points so good was the play. Dave Naylor got his name on the scorecard a second time when he achieved Nearest the Pin at hole 14, while Dave Wright achieved this at holes 5 and 10, with Fred Noakes achieving NTP at hole 7 and Simon Sharples at hole 17. The ground staff and restaurant staff at Las Colinas were excellent and all the players would like to extend their grateful thanks to them. Their attentiveness and professionalism, coupled with the warm sunshine, meant that, for the society, a wonderful first game for 2015 was, in fact, a perfect day. Our next match will be at the El Valle Golf Course on 20th January 2015. New members, or just those seeking more information about a truly great, warm, friendly and welcoming golf society, should contact Steve Dixon at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig.

By Eric Lucas A smaller than normal turn out at Saurines on Thursday for our first game of 2015, understand there were a few members who were ill, and decided to give the game a miss. It started off cold but once the sun came up it became a very nice day no clouds and big blue sky. Saurines was again looking In good condition but apparently the greens were very fast and pin positions a bit of a challenge. Congratulations to Ernie Wilson who won his singles Matchplay Championship game against the much fancied Jeff Luke, this game when on a further two holes to decide the winner. Ernie seems to like the low handicapper players last year he knocked out Stuart Whyte who played off 1. We played full handicap stableford, 2 N/t/p's, and the usual twos pot . Results were pins. No 6 Ray Pryce. No 18 Henry Steel. The two's pot was not won this will roll over to next week. Winner on the day was Steve Woods with 34 pt's There was no raffle this week. Thanks to the staff at Gogarty's for their great hospitality. All future games and dates are now updated on the website, this normally be done by Sunday night after the Saturday games. You should have had an e mail with the details, any problems contact me. The match play details are now on the web site, also the details are on the notice board in Gogarty's. Just to remind you all if you are planning to go away to Benidorm with us April Next year Ernie Wilson will be Gogarty's Thursdays after our games to collect deposit money for the Trip. All meeting times are 1 and 1/2 hours before tee time at Gogarty's. Guest's are invited to all our games, clubs can be hired. All information on the notice board outside Gogarty's. THE ULTIMATE golf experience: nine holes of snow golf in KETTERING’S CHARLEY HULL has become the youngest winner of the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit after finishing tied for fifth at the Dubai Ladies Masters. Her meteoric rise takes her from Rookie of the year in 2013 to topping the overall LET money list. Charley, 18, who won the UK National Ladies Championship at Turnberry aged nine, doesn’t believe in hanging about. THESE YOUNGSTERS don’t have a minute to live. Rory McIlroy believes golf should be speeded up in order to halt the slide in partic-

ipation of the under 25’s. Shorten the courses and the rough, reduce the bunkers and cut the price is his advice. But there is already a golf facility like that. It’s called Pitch and Putt. THREE THINGS an ageing golfer loses: His nerve, his memory, and what was the third thing? Wishing you all a great golfing New Year. Skipper Jorge said before Sunday’s game that Torrevieja’s players are absolutely delighted to be back at the Vicente Garcia after an absence of two months and the ground could be the difference, the incentive that they need as they enter the second phase in their quest for playoff qualification. ‘We've been waiting quite a while to get back to our home pitch and playing once more on natural grass is a big advantage that also helps to motivate the players as it suits the Torrevieja style of football. You could see the evidence on the grass at Alzira last week where we took the three points having played a great game’ he told The Leader. And the team that stepped into the firing line as Torry got on with their quest were old rivals Utiel who went into Sunday evening’s game firmly rooted to the bottom of the Tercera with just 15 points from their 22 games. It is a situation that is largely ignored by Jorge who said ‘The position of the bottom side Utiel is a false one. They are a team that is working well defensively, which was demonstrated last week in their goalless draw against Cullera. I remember that despite numerous opportunities in the game at Utiel we could only manage a draw so, although we are in a confident mood, we go into the game knowing that we will have to work extremely hard to continue our current good run of form’. The game itself saw Torry demonstrating a solid look and they were unlucky not to go ahead in the opening minutes when Eddy curled a first-time shot just wide of the post from the edge of the penalty area. Moments later and Jorge went even closer

when his effort hit the side netting. As the home side applied pressure to the Utiel goal Banderas was the next to go close on 11 minutes with Pau needing to pull off a fine point blank save to deny the former Orihuela man. From the rebound Rafa Gomez then went just wide. Torry began to get frustrated and wide player Berna escaped with a booking for a dangerous challenge on Utiel defender Baixauli as referee Perez Alcocer gave hime the benefit of the doubt. The visitors only effort came on the half hour when a mix up in the Torry area saw Alexis slice a clearance. Fortunately Oscar was on hand to turn the ball over the bar saving what could have proved an expensive mistake. Just prior to the interval Banderas had the ball in the Utiel net but was rightly judged offside. The second period got underway with the home side wondering how they were going to break the deadlock which looked most unlikely until Galiana made a double substitution in the 61st minute bringing on Brani and Cesar, both of whom were instrumental in the only goal of the game. No sooner had they settled into the game when, in the 67th minute, an excellent crossfield ball from Brani picked out Cesar on the edge of the Utiel box. His powerful strike hit the back of the net with Pau stranded between the posts. In truth this was a game totally dominated by the home side and with good opportunities falling to Carrasco, Oscar, Borja and Banderas Torry should really have won in a canter. But most importantly they kept on pushing forward and in the end they got their just rewards. Next Sunday Torry travel to Mura for a game that kicks off at 5pm. See the club website for information regarding travel arrangements.

Jorge leading out the team against Alzira

UD ALZIRA - 0 CD TORREVIEJA - 3 AT SAGUNTINO - 0 CD TORREVIEJA - 0 After a fortnights seasonal absence, Torry recorded 2 super results on the road. First up was a trip to Alzira on Sun 4 Jan, to play a team who only just missed promotion via the play offs last season. Ferran converted a close range chance on 43 mins, in a half which Torry dominated, playing attractive possession football. The hosts fought back well, and should have been 2 up before the hour mark. A clear cut opportunity less than 5 yards from goal was squandered, then Torry keeper Oscar pulled off a magnificent save to deny another certain goal. On 63 mins, Jorge connected with a loose ball on the edge of the box, sending his half volley screaming into the back of the net, giving Torry a much needed 2nd goal against the run of play. Straight from the restart, Oscar came to his side's rescue again, finger tipping a fierce drive wide of the target. Berna made it safe for Torry on 78 mins, when he beat 3 players, before calmly stroking the ball inside the far post. This emphatic victory has to be Torry's best of the season so far, a

view shared by full back Vicente, heaping praise on his fellow team mates, whom for once didn't receive a single booking! A visit to Saguntino on Weds 7 Jan, started a second sequence of div 3 matches (1-0 at home in first game of the season), with Torry well placed in 6th position for a serious play off push. The fluency shown at Alzira was far from evident, in a first half in which the home side should have been 3 or 4 goals ahead. Torry rode their luck, none more so than on 36 mins, when a well struck shot hit the base of the post, before bouncing to safety. Manager Galiana must have read the riot act at half time, for his troops were transformed in the 2nd period. Centre back Alexis had a goal bound effort well saved on 87 mins, as Torry looked to have nicked an undeserved victory, but it was that man Oscar who once again pulled off a top drawer save from Martinez a minute later, allowing his colleagues to escape with a hard fought draw. Bookings for Jorge and Borja, soured an otherwise satisfactory evening.
