ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION INITIATIVES GAINING MO MENTUM

Last weekend saw the latest census on marine wildlife conducted along the Valencia coastline, with ornithologists from across the region coming together to monitor and report their findings on a day that presented calm conditions and good visibility. The complete data is now being collated and will be released once complete, but ElĂas Gomis from the Amigos de los Humedales del Sur de Alicante reporting that the Balearic shearwater, or Puffinus mauretanicus, was

particularly intense in the first two hours. The high atmospheric pressure had caused the lowering of sea levels and the appearance of small islands, many of which effectively tripled the surface area, much to the delight of the endangered Audouin's gulls who frequent the area, although one took even more advantage of the extra land by catching and eating a small squid, according to the report from the spotter at Cabo de las Huertas. One of the Audouin's gulls spotted was well known to the spotters, having been ringed as a chick in the Delta del Ebro in 1999. Continued on Page 2

Now approaching its 16th birthday, the bird has joined in the census on numerous occasions and always located in the province of Alicante, usually in Torrevieja or the Salinas de Santa Pola, but never too far away, with the exception of having been seen once in Cabo de Gata and another time in the port of La Vila. There were also numerous sightings of Turnstone, Kentish Plover, Sanderling, sandwich tern, little egret and, at times, a cormorant. At the end of the census time, a female Kingfisher was also spotted catching a fish and eating it before flying south. In total, the data reveals that there were at least 16 marine species spotted during the census, a total of more than 10,000 birds, and at least two of the watch points also had the pleasure of observing bottlenose dolphins, perhaps curious of the activity taking place. The data will play an important part in indicating the strength and risk to the marine wildlife in the area, and with threats to the environment ever present, such as the construction of homes on protected land at Cala Mosca in Orihuela, and the threat by Torrevieja´s mayor, Eduardo Dolón of the Partido Popular, to allow a new DIY store to be built on protected land, the information has never been more important than now, in order to help protect the delicate environment that we, as humans, continue to invade. Whereas some may not value the importance of environmental protection, for others it forms a key part of both their current and future manifestos. The Sierra Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor have become the latest areas to be provided with information posters in an attempt to ensure protection of such animals as foxes, bobcats and genets. Protecting wildlife in Pilar de la Horadada is a priority for the Department of the Environment which is run by Iván Romero of the Unión Pilareña political group, and for that reason they have installed five information boards, of some 2 metres in height, at the edges of the areas recognised as in need of protection, under both the LIC standard recognising the areas to be of community interest, and with ZEPA classification, the Zona de Especial Protección de Aves which specifically aims to protect birds.

THE ULTIMATE FAREWELL Fire fighters from across the province descended on Torrevieja this week, joining a large crowd of mourners who had gathered to bid the last farewell to a colleague who had died after a long illness. The funeral of Ángel Clares, who was based in Torrevieja and died at the age of just 55, was held in Torrevieja on Thursday at the church of the Immaculate Conception. After the service, the sirens wailed and lights illuminated on the attending fire trucks, accompanied by the local police, as a final farewell, in an emotional event attended by his wife, three children, three sisters, his family and friends in a touching last goodbye. In line with the Red Natura 2000, a Europeanwide conservation program, the posters carry pictures of owls and Bonelli's eagle emblems indicating some of the birds residing in the roads and cattle trails that traverse these natural and protected areas, and are aimed at a warning to drivers of the presence of the creatures, and the need to drive with extreme care so as to avoid risks to the natural animal residents, including the birds and the foxes, bobcats or genets. In fact, drivers who may travel through the Murcia area may well have already come across some of the signs before, which offer warnings for protection of everything from frogs to birds. On behalf of his department, Romero explains how Pilar de la Horadada has over 4000 hectares classified as ZEPA protected land, representing 52% of the entire municipality, including the Sierra Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor areas which are shared with neighbouring Orihuela and San Miguel de Salinas. As the protection standards in the south of the area are starting to creep further north, hopefully the efforts of those monitoring wildlife movements across Alicante and Valencia will find their tasks a little easier in the future, as the onus on environmental protection is finally being given importance, although most environmentalists acknowledge that there is still a long way to go.

TORREVIEJA MUNICIPAL THEATRE INVESTIGATION ACCELERATED

The old Nuevo Cinema, current site of Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre Torrevieja courts have accelerated the investigation filed against the Partido Popular government team over the inflated costs accrued during the construction of the Municipal theatre. A complaint was first raised by the Los Verdes green party after the government, under the former mayor and now convicted criminal Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo, first demolished a listed building, the “Nuevo Cinema”, which was both contrary to the general plan and Valencia laws, and the subsequent inflated cost of 3.2 million euro, according to the information from the Los Verdes. The matter is further complicated by the fact that the municipal theatre, which was opened in 2006 and has played host to many a public event, still lacks the required licences to enable it to have opened and be used for the purpose of its design, on account of “serious construction defects and irregularities in its facilities”, which were detected by the Ministry of Interior and other government agencies, after collating and checking the documentation submitted by the council, without having made the mandatory inspection tours, as that would inevitably lead to the

closure and decommissioning of the theatre and its complementary facilities. After the initial destruction of the “Nuevo Cinema”, and the “enormous chaos”, of the construction, after outstanding for nearly five years, the Governing Board of the PP approved the payment of an outstanding invoice of 4.5 million euro to address the payment of part of the executed works, which was for the initial 1.3 million euro quoted cost, plus the additional 3.2 million not accounted for. Having requested further documentation in relation to the case in November of last year, the courts have now decided to accelerate the investigation which the Los Verdes feel is indicative of the dark “age of plunder and waste” where in the city of Torrevieja has seen public money wasted in abundance, which allowed the unjustified payment of no less than 3.2 million euro, and they trust that the investigation will determine the responsibilities arising thereof, pointing and identifying of those responsible for such “nonsense” that has cost the taxpayers so much pain and suffering and it is now those taxpayers who now suffer the crisis and its consequences.

GERMAN CHOICE Spain is continuing to be an attraction for German tourists, with a leading German travel magazine this week reporting 8.9 million tourists chose Spain in 2013, a 6.9% increase over the previous year. The Balearic Islands showed solid growth of 3.3% with a total of 4.4 million visitors, while the Canary Islands experienced a 17% increase, reaching 2.9 million. A decline in interest in Egypt has been attributed to most of the growth.

TAKE FLIGHT Spain has a new airport added to its portfolio of transport hubs, after the airfield at La Seu d’Urgell, located in the Catalan Pyrenees in Spain, was this week officially recategorised as an airport, therefore tourist, passenger, cargo and private flights may now operate from the location. With a 1.3 kilometre runway, as opposed to the 2 kilometre one at neighbouring Alguaire, the new airport is more suited for smaller aircraft.

MIND THE GAP Popular clothing chain Gap opened its first store in Spain this week, located in Málaga airport on the Costa Del Sol. The chain plans to open more stores this year, with the assistance of the El Corte Inglés department store group. Global sales by Gap increased by 4% in November and December and is the third largest textile chain after Swedish budget high-street name H&M, and the Spanish Inditex empire.

NEW SOLAR PLANT LOOKING FOR LOCAL WORKERS

The municipal government of Elche has signed a collaboration agreement with the company set to build the new solar power plant next to Alicante-Elche airport, in order to guarantee that jobs for workers to build the site will be sourced from the local community. Himin Solar, who are responsible for completing the project, have agreed to not only hire local workers, but focus on those who have been in long term unemployment, subject to the necessary qualifications and abilities. The company have also said that they will provide extensive training courses “to the 250 workers who, in principle, do not require specific training, except for some positions that are aimed at electricians working in high and low voltage locations”, and once the initial one-year installation phase is complete, they will also offer 40 permanent maintenance jobs at the plant. According to a statement issued by the council, the Mayor, Mercedes Alonso, stressed that the project has already been declared on “Community Interest” by the

Valencian Government, an important accreditation to ensure that the project will be completed. Once completed in 2020, the photovoltaic plant will have 250,000 solar panels and reach a maximum output of 250 megawatts. The company will make an initial investment of 50 million euros, which later will be increased gradually, creating more jobs in Elche. The total budget for this project is 250 million euro. The 250,000 solar panels will cover a land area of 100 hectares at Finca de la Marquesa, on the Elche to El Altet road, and eventually provide power to about 20,000 families, expected to be distributed through the local area. As part of the ongoing commitment to renewable energies, the creation of the site will prevent 30,000 tons of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere. The 250 million euro investment for the scheme will be provided by the private sector, with “various” foreign funds involved in the scheme, including investment from China. The company are now asking for applications by means of

THE FRENCH CONNECTION Air Nostrum, the franchised regional airline of Iberia, will connect Alicante with the French town of Carcassonne this summer, with flights from 149 euro return, all inclusive. The company will operate the new route with a weekly flight in each direction from the 20th of June until the 24th of August, aimed at leisure travel for both residents of southern France who plan to enjoy the Alicante beaches, and those from Spain wanting to visit the famous fortified city. Carcassonne is known for its walled citadel, a fortified architectural complex of medieval origin that was restored in the nineteenth century with monumental purposes and is one of the most visited cities in France, especially since UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, Norwegian airline will launch a new route to Nice in France from Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Su谩rez airport from March, linking the Spanish capital with its first French connection every Thursday and Sunday, flown on their third Boeing 727 to be located at its base in Madrid.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dol贸n, has once again given his annual report on the continual increase in passengers using the Torrevieja to the airport bus service, which has been used by 84,048 passengers in 2014. During the whole year of 2013, a total of 72,049 passengers were carried, representing an increase of 39.5% over 2012, when 51,660 people travelled, now in 2014 the 84,048 passengers represents an increase of 16.7% over last year, although still falling considerably below being full, with a theoretical 292,000 annual seats available. The total number of passengers who began their journey at the Torrevieja end of the express service totalled 40,429, 48% of the total, whereas those

who began their trip at Alicante-Elche airport destined for Torrevieja reached 43,655, the remaining 52%. The average occupancy in 2014 amounted to 230 passengers each day, compared with 197 passengers per day in 2013, representing an increase of 14.34%. The theoretical capacity for the service on a 50-seater coach is 400 passengers each way per day. The service departs Torrevieja every odd hour from 07:00 to 21:00, returning from the airport on every second even hour from 08:00 to 22:00. With 8 services each way, every day of the year, the service is express between the two points and travels on the motorway network, avoiding the N-332 coastal road.

ORIHU ELA COSTA NEWS ROUNDUP GREEN SHOOTS ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA The Orihuela Costa will soon become the home for around a hundred new shrubs, after the town hall applied for them as part of the day of the tree celebrations later this month. The regional government had asked for applications for up to 800 trees as part of their green campaign, eventually offering Orihuela just 290. Of those being received, a third will be planted in the coastal zone on the 30th of January, in preparation for the day of the tree, which is celebrated on the 31st of January across Valencia.

The town hall had requested permission from the coastal department of Alicante to rectify the potentially dangerous fault, with Alicante acting immediately in sending inspectors and then the equipment to remove the extension, knocking it into the land and sea area below, thus rendering it safe in a very quick time.

Similar to other campaigns this week, after reports that a large piece of land, which which have seen green areas renovated in a number of has been separated from the main landmass for many areas around the municipality, the work is being completed by a group of previously long term unemployed residents, who are now working on temporary contracts where they will be taught key skills in both the classroom and at a practical level in the hope of learning new abilities to assist them in securing a permanent position with other companies in the future. Within the next few weeks, the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, in collaboration with the environment department run by Manuel Gallud, are planning to hold a conference in the Orihuela Costa town hall, where presentations and suggestions will be made as to how communities can get involved in creating new or refreshed green areas, without risking the existing ecosystems, which has sometimes been the case in the past when invasive plants have planted in gardens, without the well-meaning gardener being aware of the implications of some of the plants sold readily in many garden centres, many of which have wiped out protected specimens which are natural and some unique to the area.

PETROL STATION ARREST Officers from the Guardia Civil arrested the alleged perpetrator of a petrol station robbery in Torrevieja this week. The offence occurred in November when two men wearing hoods entered the petrol filling station in Guardamar del Segura and, after intimidating the attendant, made off with the proceeds of the till, fleeing in a car displaying fake license plates. The detainee, who is of Spanish nationality, is accused of the crimes of robbery and falsification of public documents, and been made available to the court in Torrevieja.

POLICE SCOOTER RISK A union representing local police officers in Torrevieja has reported that officers are being put under increased risk on account of a number of scooters operated on routine patrols being over 15 years old, and that they lack the mandatory ITV certificates. This news is despite the car park of the Torrevieja police station being full of nearly new cars acquired in September of 2013 at a cost of three quarters of a million euro, most of which spend their entire lives in the parking lot.

ACID ATTACK TARGETS WRONG MAN After six months of investigation, the National Police have arrested five people for the attempted murder of a young man who doused with acid by mistake.

The incident took place last July after a man was hired, at a cost of 2000 euro, to throw the acid over a man who had allegedly raped a young girl. The photo of the targeted individual was obtained from a Social Networking site and handed to the man who had been hired to carry out the attack. The attack took place at about 22:30 pm on July 18, when a 32 year old man, who was in company of two friends on the terrace of a bar in the Plaza del Cedro, Valencia, was attacked by a man who approached him threw the contents of a plastic container over his face. The liquid caused serious acid

burns to his face, head and trunk, causing the loss of one eye and almost the total loss of sight in the other. His two companions also suffered burns but to a much lesser degree. The National Police have now confirmed that the attack was a mistake, and that the photograph provided to the attacker, although it resembled the individual being targeted, had been of the wrong man. Subsequently the five arrests were made, four men who remain in custody and the woman alleged to have suffered the initial rape, who was released on bail.

PRICE FIXING FINE REDUCED BY 40% Two years ago the National Commission of Fair Trading (CNMC) hit the five major ferry lines in the Balearics with fines totalling 54 million euros after finding them guilty of price fixing and agreeing conditions detrimental to users. The investigation began back in April 2010 when the then Councillor for Transport at the Consell, Albert Prats, made an official complaint to CNMC about what he believed was unfair competition within the cartel making up the Balearics’ ferry routes. The fine set for Baleària, the ferry company operating out of Denia, who were part of the cartel of shipping companies charging the unfair prices for over 10 years, was 9.5 million euro but that seems set to be reduced by 40% on appeal to the Regulator. As well as Baleària, the other companies fined were Trasmediterránea, Isleña Marítima de Contenedores, Sercomisa and Mediterránea Pitiusa. The total amount of the penalties reached 54 million. The CNMC began their investigation following a complaint by the Consell Insular de Ibiza, who warned of the existence of agreements between the shipping companies aimed at price fixing the regular maritime transport of passengers and goods between the Peninsula and Balearic Islands. Both the Torrevieja University Hospital and Elche’s Vinalopo Hospital have launched a new service virtual tour facility in collaboration with 'Google Places'. Through this tool, by using real images, members of the public can walk through the interior of the hospital and acquaint themselves with any area of ? interest prior to an appointment or a visit. The service allows the user to identify a service or an area of ??the hospital, and hopefully make any subsequent visit easier to navigate and of course less stressful The application uses 360 degree digital images from scanned blueprints at both centers, with the aim of providing users better accessibility to facilities. By using these interactive tools, patients and families will find it much easier to get around the build-

ings, to see exactly where they need to go and navigate themselves through the main areas of hospitals, including surgical and medical areas, outpatient, emergency and many other departments. To get around this 360 degree tour the individual is guided by arrows as 'Google Places' takes you to your the chosen location. In addition the images are displayed in a gigapixel quality that allows zooming in areas to provide far greater detail without losing image resolution The service offers the user into every corner of the facility from their computer, tablet or mobile device. The new virtual tour of the Torrevieja University hospital is available through the link: www.torrevieja-salud.com/visita-virtual or simply by searching on 'Google Maps'.

ANOTHER RECORD YEAR FOR ORGAN TRANSPLANTS

Spain is continuing to be a globally recognised centre for transplant surgery, with new figures released this week showing how 2014 was yet another record breaking year. Having been the world leader in organ transplants since 1992, in total, there were 4,360 organ transplant operations conducted in Spanish hospitals last year, an increase of 5% on the 2013 figure. A total of 2,678 kidney transplant operations were carried out in 2014, an increase of 5% on the previous year, as well as a 6% increase in heart transplants, with 265 operations in 2014. The majority of donated organs came from patients who had died as a result of suffering a stroke, with donors from motor vehicle accidents reducing in line with the reduction in such incidents. Half of the donors are over the age of 60. In addition, over 15% of kidney donations came from live donors, with 423 people giving up their organ, a massive increase on the 61 living donor transplants a decade ago.

Despite these landmark figures, the donor rate is still extremely low, but far higher than other countries. In Spain, the donor rate now stands at 36 donors per million inhabitants, far higher than both France and the UK, where the figures are 26 and 21 respectively.

CALL IN R AND A UPHOLSTERY When husband and wife team Robert and Agnes Wardrop relocated to Spain almost eight years ago they dreamed of long hot days lazing in the sun. However after a few weeks boredom began to set in, so they decided to set up a business, and came to the conclusion that they would be better to stick to what they know, which is upholstery ! A very wise decision as R&A Upholstery has gone from strength to strength since 2006. Robert and Agnes are very enthusiastic in regards to their work and often work seven days a week just to meet deadlines. Agnes said " We really value our customers and take pride in our work". Robert began his training to be an upholsterer in his teens

and there is nothing about the upholstery business that he doesn't know. He is an undisputed expert in antique sofas and chairs, as Mrs Owen in Doña Pepa recently discovered to her delight, when she commisioned R&A Upholstery to reupholster her Chesterfield and two wing back chairs. Mrs Owen stated " My furniture is better than new, I'm delighted with the high standard of the work and wouldn't hesitate to recommend R&A Upholstery to anyone. The service I recieved was prompt and efficient. Agnes and Robert helped me to choose the correct fabric for my sofa and chairs, which was leather and rather tired looking, but I loved my furniture and didn't want to part with it". Robert said, " When we reupholster anything all the old fabric is stripped off and we check the springs, webs, wood ect and repair or replace anything that we think needs it. So when the client gets it back its better than new. We offer a complete upholstery service not just a recovery. We also recover leather suites into fabric which we find is better suited to the Spanish climate". Robert and Agnes also offer an interior design service, from one room to a complete house. If you think your sitting room or bedroom could benefit from this service why not ask them for a free consultation. It is easy to give your home a make over for relatively little money. For example a new pelmet and headboard can inject a bit of life into a tired looking bedroom! Mr and Mrs Porter from Playa

Flamenca recently had their master bedroom designed by Agnes and are delighted with their new look. Mrs Porter said " I love my bedroom now it is so light and airy, I'm sure it makes me sleep sounder! The sitting room is next on my list". Agnes and Robert have a wide range of beautiful fabrics both contemporary and traditional suitable for all budgets. So if you are interested in a no obligation cost for revamping your sad, but loved, soft furnishings why not give Robert and Agnes a call on 965 319 227 or 638 283 910. PATRIOTIC VISITORS A number of ships carrying Spanish Patriot missiles arrived in Turkey this week, in preparation for being based in the Incirlik military base in southern Adana province as part of NATO´s military defence system. The missiles were accompanied by more than 150 Spanish soldiers who will be looking after the missiles during their deployment.

RUSSIAN RISK With destinations in Spain and Portugal appearing safer for Russian tourists, other locations are suffering as holidaymakers cancel their plans and opt for destinations in Spain. So far, Goa has seen 40,000 Russian tourists cancel their trip there, according to a legal advisor to the Russian Consulate.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

ROBINS AND CANARIES

I am sure that I heard and saw a robin today. It is not a sight that I have seen since living in the UK, but I could not mistake its cheery voice and bright red breast. I watched this cheerful visitor for a few seconds as it sat on a tree watching me put rubbish into the bin before it flew off. It was a welcome sight and brought back many happy memories. This brief incident set me thinking about another bird, which I am often asked about, and that is the canary I am often asked why canaries are not seen flying wild in the Canary Islands. After all, surely the Canary Islands are the home of this popular (usually yellow) chirpy little bird with the wonderful voice? Thankfully, keeping one as a pet indoors is not as popular in the UK as it once was, but they are still very popular pets in many Spanish homes. Indeed, many visitors assume that our group of islands close to the coast of Africa are named after the canary bird, when it is really the other way around. I hate to shatter too many illusions, but this beautiful little bird has very little to do with the Canary Islands. However, you may see a solitary canary, stuffed into a cheap cage that is far too small for it, baking alive on the balcony of one of the many apartments on the island. Those bought as a King’s Day gift for granny, will usually be long dead by Easter, but never mind, in this consumer based, recession hit

society, where animal welfare is a very low priority, a replacement can always be bought for granny next year... The Canary Islands are derived from the Latin name, Canariae Insulae, which means the Island of Dogs. Canis in Latin means dogs, and it is thought that when one of the islands, Gran Canaria, was rediscovered by Roman sailors, it was inhabited by a species of very large wild dogs. Another theory is that the large dogs were actually monk seals, a species that is no longer present in the Canary Islands. To add to the confusion about the name and the accuracy of the ‘dog story’, historical accounts show that when the Spanish conquered the islands, there was no sign of the large dogs, yet the term ‘Islas Canarias’ was a name to remain until the present time. Interestingly too, this name was originally only given to the island of Gran Canaria; it was not a collective name for the group of seven inhabited islands as it is today. Another theory is that the original inhabitants of the islands, the Guanches, worshipped dogs, which they regarded as holy animals. Some theories speculate upon the possible connection between the worship of these large dogs by the Guanches and the Egyptian cult of the dog headed god, Anubis. Indeed, the link with dogs, and not canaries, continues to be represented in the islands’ coat of arms. Another, less romantic story, maintains that the name of the islands refers to the plant, Canaria, found in the Canary Islands, which was used to purge the bowels of dogs. Visitors and bird watchers need not be disappointed, since there are references to around 420 species of birds to be found in the Canary Islands, of which eight species are globally threatened, and yes, there is a European Robin, and a Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, to be found on the checklist of birds in the Canary Islands, albeit with labels of ‘rare/accidental’, so maybe it was not the influence of festive cheer after all. In my case, the visitor was a European Robin, and I felt very fortunate to witness such a sight, and on Christmas Day too. The canary bird is therefore named after the islands and not the other way around as many think. Sadly, visitors will not see bright yellow canaries flying around the islands, or maybe if they do, they will have been one of the fortunate ones to escape from their tiny prisons on the hot balconies. It always makes me wonder why they bother to sing at all.

APPEAL FOR PUBLIC HELP TO TRACE CO P KILLER

Merseyside Police are appealing for help to trace a 30year-old man who is wanted on a European Arrest Warrant for the murder of PC Neil Doyle. Timmy Donovan, who is also known as Timmy O’Sullivan, is originally from the Huyton area and has connections with Childwall in Liverpool. He is understood to have left the country at about 8.30pm on Friday, 19 December, through the Eurotunnel and officers believe he was driving a five door grey Mercedes A180 (registration YE62 NWG). Donovan is described as 5ft 8in tall, broad build, with dark brown hair and blue eyes and has a Liverpool accent. Detectives believe that Donovan is in Europe, possibly Spain, and are working with the National Crime Agency, Europol and European police forces in a bid to locate him. Donovan is the latest in a long line of fugitives being sought across Europe, and will hopefully soon join the ever growing list of suspects brought to justice for their crimes. In Spain last year, the Guardia Civil arrested a total of 8,952 people who had fled from justice and wanted by national or international authorities, assisting law enforcers in 84 countries to bring fugitives to court. Of those wanted suspects arrested, 5 were originally from the United Kingdom, although the largest group were from Romania, where 20

fugitives were returned. In addition, there were 8 from Italy, 6 from Morocco, 5 from France, 4 from Russia, 4 from Lithuania and 3 from Germany. As for the countries looking to locate missing fugitives, the United Kingdom successfully received 3 wanted fugitives, whereas France led the table for warrants executed with 15, followed by Romania with 14, Italy with 10, the United States with 8, Germany with 7, Belgium with 6, Lithuania with 3, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and Venezuela had 2 each, and Portugal, Bulgaria, Sweden, Denmark and Hungary all saw 1 person returned. As for the locations where they were found, Madrid, Tarragona and Málaga was home to 8 fugitives each, just ahead of Alicante with 7, and the Balearics and Barcelona had 5 each. The Guardia Civil believe that the fugitives choose immigrant reach locations such as the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, with the belief that they will blend in more within communities of their own nationalities, often with false identification. In return, the Guardia Civil also collaborated in 8 international operations to have fugitives returned to this country, 4 of those detained being in the top ten most wanted criminals list released last year by the Guardia Civil.

As for Donovan, anybody who spots him or knows of his whereabouts are urged to contact the police immediately. The 112 emergency line in Spain has operators who speak English, and Crimestoppers can be contacted on a Spanish telephone number too, which is 900 555 111, and is answered in the UK by Crimestoppers’ call agents who also have a translation service available upon request. People can also pass on information anonymously via the online Giving Information form on Crimestoppers’ website, which is crimestoppers-uk.org. Those in the UK should call 0800 555 111 or visit the website.

BUDGET BURDEN EASED THANKS TO BAD DRIVERS As part of their road monitoring and policing procedures, the DGT has an expenditure budget of 734 million euro this year, with more than half, 441.9 million, being spent on staff costs. However, thanks to the number of drivers fined for road traffic law violations, the cost is lower than expected, as the entire 360.9 million euro collected from fines is injected back into road safety. In fact, combining the anticipated 360.9 million euro in fine revenue with the other 506.07 million euro revenue for traffic procedures, the DGT will receive in the region of 869 million, therefore bringing in 135 million euro more than their proposed expense. Despite the financial assistance given by those who violate the law, the DGT has said than revenue collected from fines has continued to decrease. The end of year figure for 2014 has yet to be completed, but we do know that in the first six months of the year the amount collected was 188.5 million euro. In addition to the staffing costs already mentioned, the second biggest expense is for feeding and caring for Pegasus, as the helicopters carrying the airborne radar equipment have a 700,000 euro budget for fuel, which doubles to 1,400,000 once tax is added. This budget is shared amongst all of the air bases, with Madrid receiving 34% of the budget, followed

by Valencia with 16%, Málaga with 14% and the rest split almost equally between Sevilla, Zaragoza and La Coruña and Valladolid. The land vehicles take up the next section of costs with 23.11 million euro, including taxes, spent on diesel and petrol on both the peninsula and the Balearics. Next we add the additional radar equipment purchased towards the end of last year, including two new Pegasus units worth 985,000 euro, as well as 30 portable lazar speed detectors for a total of 1,991,055.00 euro with tax. Despite being purchased in 2014, they are from this year´s budget. Other motoring related expenditure budgeted for includes the purchase of 1,545 vehicle batteries, at a cost of 189,824.8 euro, and 516,528 euro for motorcycle helmets. As for where the 360.9 million euro collected from fines comes from, across the Valencia region in 2014 there were 257,175 drivers sanctioned for speeding alone, bringing in a 47.2 million euro share. Of those drivers caught, 125,055 were done so by fixed devices on the road network, whereas 132,120 were from mobile check points. Last year saw an extra 7,065 drivers caught by mobile devices in this area. It might be worth noting that the Guardia Civil police speeders using a variety of different pieces of

equipment, some “flash” when they get you, some work by infrared, working day and night, others can monitor average speeds between two points. As for the mobile patrols, they work a two-shift system in the morning and afternoon, usually working 5 hour long patrols and moving to different locations throughout their assigned area. The Guardia Civil also point out that violations recorded by fixed systems correspond exclusively to speed, although some of them can now also check the ITV database to see if the mandatory inspection date has expired, whereas during a mobile patrol, “when the vehicle is stopped, we often also do a breathalyser or documentation check”, a source told us. As for Pegasus, when the helicopters take to the air, 65% of their total flying time is dedicated

to recording, monitoring and sanctioning drivers, although the violations registered are not only speed related. Whereas the money collected from fines goes back into road safety for new equipment and more policing as explained, a number of road safety associations are calling for that process to be changed, saying that the rather that investing to catch more offenders, the money ought to be invested in road maintenance, signs and signals and aid for victims of road traffic collisions. A representative from the ANC cooperative association says that most accidents occur on secondary roads, accounting for 79% of all fatalities, but these roads receive the less maintenance. Last year 109 people died on the roads of the Valencian region, in 88 recorded accidents, 16% more than the previous year. To which we must add 27 serious and 39 injured road users, whereas 82 people were lucky enough to come out unharmed.

PEPA FERRANDO STILL CALLING FOR SUPPORT In a meeting in Orihuela this week, around fifty people pledged their support for the ousted former leader of the Partido Popular, Pepa Ferrando, including most of the executive members of the PP. The aim of the meeting was to support Ferrando, who has been expelled from the PP by the regional party heads for refusing to support an anti-corruption motion presented at Orihuela´s monthly meeting, and the subsequent fallout that has led to a number of the opposition group members dividing from the intentions being enforced by their regional and national bodies to clean up the political image. Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the regional Partido Popular in Valencia, Isabel Bonig, and her provincial counterpart, José Juan Zaplana, presided over their own executive committee meeting where they confirmed that Dámaso Aparicio is their only recognised head of the PP in Orihuela. However, in that meeting, questions were still

raised about the legality of the regional party enforcing a new head on the local group, without a democratic election. The no so called renegade group held an election themselves and appointed another member, José Francisco Pérez Espinosa, as their new interim President, a move which the hierarchy have now confirmed to be unacceptable. A new campaign to collect signatures in support of Ferrando is being launched, whilst Aparicio himself made clear in a statement that the “independent republic of the PP is over” and that he is confident that the recognised elements of the Partido Popular, under his lead for now, can get on with the job in hand. All eyes will now be on the next plenary meeting in Orihuela, as having been expelled from the Partido Popular, Ferrando will no longer be able to sit with her former PP colleagues, taking her place along with other none affiliated councillors, but quite whether the usual “no” campaign towards all motions presented will continue with such a division in their own ranks will remain to be seen.

Provincial and Regional leaders confirmed that Dámaso Aparicio is the only recognised head of the PP in Orihuela.

COLLECTING BALL

SCHOOL BOOK HELP

A giant inflatable ball which was located in the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, in which visitors could have their photograph taken in exchange for a small donation, has successfully raised 1,946 euro for the none-profit organisation Cruz Roja during the Christmas holiday season.

The department of education in Orihuela has advised that the deadline for eligible applications for families who might need a little financial help with purchasing school text books is getting close. If a family of a child being schooled would like to apply for up to 100 euro towards school books, then it must be done before the 23rd of January. The staff in the Orihuela Costa town hall are able to help in the application and eligibility process, but it must be completed before the deadline.

POOP PATROL Three months ago, Xativa council started to deal with the problem of dog mess on the streets by adopting scientific process to assist in the policing of offenders. This week, the council have reported that with just one patrol per week, they have reduced the problem by 80%, after creating a database of doggy DNA and then matching up what they find on the streets with the dog whose offending owner has failed to clean up after. Each of the DNA tests cost 15 euro, which is charged to the dog owner in addition to a fine. The owners of dogs not on the database don´t get away with it either, as they risk a fine of 400 euro.

NO COURT TODAY The judge presiding over the case relating to the expulsion of Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio López-Bas from the political coalition that led to the failed censure motion in Orihuela has adjourned the hearing on account of the requested documentation not being provided.

PILAR POLICE CHECKS Local police of Pilar de la Horadada are collaborating with their regional law enforcement colleagues, doubling up patrols on agricultural areas. During 2014, the local police checked almost 400 vehicles in an attempt to crack down on the theft of fruit and vegetables, as well as industrial equipment from the mainly countryside locations.

A SMILE MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE GERHARD NAGEL CLINIC NOW CELEBRATING 15 YEARS ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA A visit to the dentist always touches a nerve, often in a metaphoric sense, rather than literal, and often because of a fear that most of us seem to harbour, but usually without justification. However, the good news is that times have changed. Dentists are not to be feared, nor are dental surgeries, as the modern dentist thrives from within a warm and welcoming environment and with the most modern precision equipment, that as soon as you walk into a modern dentist´s office, you feel comfortable, welcome and your fears are eased. The Gerhard Nagel clinic at La Zenia is one such place. Having been established on the Costa Blanca since 1997, and one of the first practices in the country to offer high quality cosmetic dentistry, the experience and knowledge of the team behind the surgery has grown since their initial opening, keeping up to date with the most modern practices and equipment, to ensure that they have always maintained the highest standards of dental care available, with the overall aim of looking after your oral wellbeing, whether it be cosmetic or restorative. Their expertise in building smiles changes lives; quite literally, as they use their artistic approach to fully assess every individual mouth, from every conceivable angle, to ensure that any work carried out fits your own facial features. YOUR DEARLY BELOVED IN 3D A crematorium in America believes they are taking their services to the next level by integrating new technology. ings and bridges etc. at the drop of a hat. Specialist services, such as teeth whitening or cosmetic surgery, are also available. Children are welcome to come for check ups and pain free treatment. The clinic prides itself on prompt service. No more long waits for something you need now. Even if you have an absolute phobia about visiting the dentist, and just cannot bring yourself to settle down in the chair, your treatment can be carried out with the assistance of a qualified anaesthetist, who will knock you out completely, to enable the dentist to do the necessary work. The anaesthetist will remain present throughout the whole operation. When you come to, you will be ready to go home. Booking is recommended and the clinic is normally open between 9am to 3pm. For information or to make a booking, phone 966 73 0058 or 607 821 433.

What´s more, the finished figure carries a secret of its own, as it is actually hollow and has been created in order to act as an urn for the collection and storage of the ashes of the person it replicates. Although the concept may seem a little morbid at first, to have your loved one´s remains encased in such a unique container may well serve as a permanent reminder of their actual super powers, and with a price tag of 100 dollars, it´s probably well within the budget of most. Unless you want to add a custom wig that is, which will set you back an additional 300 dollars. If the superhero range is not quite to your liking, the company can also print the head of your loved one as a life-sized urn, which is then presented on its own pedestal, albeit at a cost of 2,600 dollars, and the company also provides a more “classic” range of urns, should neither of these be quite up your street.

NEW VALENCIA LAW (LEY 5/2014, L.O.T.U.P) By Martinez de la Casa Architects This new law affects the international community in Alicante. Up until now, any building, extension or pool could be legalised or it's description updated in the Title Deeds and afterwards registered in the Land Registry once it was 4 years old (with the exception of protected / special areas / inhabilitating participation quotas in Deeds). The only document needed was an Antiquity Certificate stating the building was over 4 years old. THIS PERIOD HAS NOW BEEN EXTENDED TO 15 YEARS. Fortunately many of the Land Registries will still register (and thereby legalise) all extensions, pools or buildings done within a minimum of four years BEFORE this new law was established. Please note EVERY LAND REGISTRY NOW HAS DIFFERENT CRITERIAS SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ENQUIRE AT YOUR ASSIGNED LAND REGISTRY BEFORE TRYING TO LEGALISE OR UPDATE AN EXTENSION THAT WAS DONE WITHOUT THE CORRECT LICENSE. Therefore, all extensions made in LESS THAN 4 years BEFORE May 2014 cannot be registered until 15 years old. For example Orihuela's Land Registry (#1), is only registering extensions and/or pools in properties with Antiquity Certificates issued before August 20th. The rest of the process remains the same; needing an ANTIQUITY CERTIFICATE done by an Architect, at the Notary to update

the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property, such as pools or extensions done with or without a license. In the case of having done an extension or pool without a license, the Antiquity Certificate, sometimes also called “retrospective licence”, is also very useful to guard against possible sanctions/fines, and to prove the building works were done at least four years before this new law being applicable. As a result it's highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of unregistered buildings even if done with a license, to have your Antiquity Certficate ready. And in the case that registration is not possible, the Antiquity Certificate serves to offer any potential buyer the maximum possible security against Townhall penalties. If for your peace of mind and to have certified that your extension/pool was done before the implementation of this new law, you then wish to have your Antiquity Certificate issued, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the pool/extension requiring only your NIE and current Title Deeds. Later using satelitte images and software we check the age of the pool/extension (pictured is an example used in the process for Antiquity Certification) and combine this with the measurements and documentation taken during our on-site visit. Martinez de la Casa Architects will enquire on your behalf at the Land Registry to check if registration is

allowed with regards to this new law. The Antiquity Certificate is stamped by the Official College of Architects and delivered within 7-10 days. The applicant can then either update and register the Title Deeds, or wait for change of Property Titleholder's at the Notary. Due to the surge in requests for Antiquity Certificates, Martinez de la Casa Arquitects has been able to greately reduce prices in the areas affected by this new law (Alicante), therefore the price of a Pool Antiquity Certificates are now at 190 €+IVA, and for Extensions plus Pool, or for the complete property, we can now offer the Antiquity Certificate at 270 €+IVA. The only condition in Alicante is that the building/pool to certify was built 4 years before the 20th August 2014. If your solicitors are working on your case, ask them to contact us to provide the Antiquity Certificate and we will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper for you. Martinez de la Casa Architects has experience in over 300 Antiquity Certificates and is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of Certificates and Licenses, amongst other services. They are the Number 1 company in EPC certificates (121€ inc IVA) in Murcia, Almeria, Alicante and likewise Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates. See over 100 reviews on their services or call on 665 810 411 if you want to arrange an appointment to have your Antiquity Certificate done (including free consultation and review of paperwork): www.martinezdelacasa.com

180´s: Peter Ayres x 2 (Porter House), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov, Lee Maiden (Meerkats), Mike Smith x 2, Del Lister (Breakaways), Shaun Smith, Nick Spicer (Hyenas), Matt Cummins (Pint Depot Kings), Derek Halpin (Evolution) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars), Nick Spicer (Hub Hyenas) We have certainly had our fair share of televised professional darts this year. Following the outstanding final of the PDC Championships at Alexander Palace where Gary Anderson prevented Phil Taylor taking his 17th World Crown, the BBC showed one of the best BDO finals of all time. 44 year old Scott Mitchell, a landscape gardener from the New Forest defeated three times champion Martin Adams 7 sets to 6 to take the 100K first prize. It may not have reached the statistical heights of the pro event, but it was definitely edge of the seat stuff that really could have gone either way. I am not sure how much tractors cost these days but a sizeable chunk of Mitchell´s 100K winnings has been put aside for this purpose for his father´s farm. Will the champion follow the footsteps of many of his predecessors, most recently, Stephen Bunting the 2014 champion and move over to the more lucrative PDC circuit. I don’t blame him if he does, in fact I would recommend it, after all, Bunting has shown he can mix it with the best plus he will add a few noughts to his bank account. Match of the week featured the Hub Hyenas entertaining the Porter House, fielding a side currently without in-form players the wrong side of the English Channel. The Hyenas took all three triples via Joe Hawkins D5, Nick Spicer D8 and exiled John Eyre D2, 6 tons coming from the hosts, with just one reply from Sid Cross. Hot Spice added two more tons and D4 for the first pair with captain Simon Williams

before the Porters got their name on the score sheet courtesy of Ray Hayes and Ray Sanderson D8. Joe Miller D8 made it 5-1 at the break, some scrummy paella awaiting the players. Sue Sanderson was first on in the singles nominated by husband Ray to face the in-form Spicer. Obviously affected by his gorgeous opponent, Spicer ended up on D1 for both legs even though a tasty 121 and a maximum had set up more conventional outs. Brian Nash´s 3x100 wasn’t enough against Williams who ensured victory and both points for his team. Cross went one up against Miller on D20 but couldn’t prevent the big man taking the next two on D4 and D14. The remaining three legs went to the hosts, each 2-0 via John Saunders D9 and D8, John Eyre D16 and D1 and Joe Hawkins D19 and D16, the latter hitting a respectable 3x100, 1x140 against Hayes 100. Hyenas big rivals for silverware this term the Meerkats also enjoyed a victory at the Playa Flamenca venue of Busters. Del Kingsbury´s side have steadied themselves and now look like easing into some decent form quite appropriate as their next two matches are against Que Pasa Eagles and the Hyenas. Pat Abrams is close to the form he enjoyed last season where he won both the Mens Merit Table and Singles title. That said, Busters were again without Mark Filer and Shirley Roberts, but should have taken more than the two legs gained. A D9 from Abrams gave the visitors an early lead despite tons from Ray Harvey and Paul Dowington. The same double was claimed for 1-1 by Irene Russell. Abrams gained his second finish in the third going out on T20,D12, with a ton thrown in. Harvey 105 and D8 made it 2-2, partner Peter O´Rourke added a ton. Lee Maiden 109 and Paul Durrant 140 made it 3 for the visitors, the former closing out D10. Kingsbury made it 4 on D14 pairing up with Dave Frew now finding his feet with the Kats. Dowington 140 faced Abrams in the first singles but was unable to prevent the Meerkat taking out D2 and D4 after 100,85,140 and 98 to set up the double. Maiden ensured the draw against Babs Warren, leaving Alex Nikolov to take the glory against O´Rourke who made it go to three legs including 2x100. Nikolov showing some form with 3x100, 1x121, 1x120. Kingsbury beat Harvey 2-1 the captain scoring a reasonable 3x100. A 114 from Julie Hallett proved fruitless against Durrant 140 to include a nice 84 out. Frew D4 and D10 plus 2x100 made it 10 for the Kats to conclude a good humoured match. Gogarty´s and the Pint Depot Kings have found the going tough this term, so both sides would probably have taken the draw prior to the match. Unfortunately it wasn’t an option and the Bulls gained their first victory of the season. Richard Pattison took the first on D2 only for the Kings to take the next two through John Crooks D4 and Frankie Wieczorek (“Frankie W”) D3. The Bulls totally reversed the trend taking all three doubles, Pattison the first on D10, Ernie Wilson the second on D5 with Kevin Fitzpatrick D20. The Bulls ensured the draw after Fitzpatrick and captain Steve Woods won the first two singles. Bliss Wright looked certain to take the match after going one up in the next, only for Rob Hogden to win the next two. The Bulls

LEADER By Paul Durrant

wrapped up the match John Crooks 2-1 and Pattison 2-0 both on D2, to win both points for the hosts. There was some consolation for the Kings via Frankie W who took both legs in the last match, with a tasty 98 out. Matt Cummins was the Kings top man managing 4x100. The Jaguars gained an early advantage over the Ale House winning two of the three triples through Wendy Hayward D18 and Angie Craggs D6, with Karl Mallinson D2 pulling one back for the Ale men. The licensee made it all square after 4, Pat Schofield D2 giving the Jaguars the lead once again. Some excellent scoring from Tracey Simpson and Hilda Wilkinson looked likely to give the Jaguars a 4-2 lead, however Bernie Whipday 117,D20 and Luke Yarnold 120 made it all square at the break. Craggs scored steadily finishing on D7 for the 7th leg against Tony Woods, Mallinson doing his best with a 121 to haul back the Jaguars, but Schofield was having none of it hitting 114,81,98 and D8 for 3-5. Owen Attwood, breaking in his newly acquired tungstens couldn’t do his new additions justice as Hayward finished the 501 on D5 after an 85 and 107. Simone de Lacy wrapped up the match with a tidy leg nailing 85,135 and D5 for both points. Yarnold and Whipday took the last two, Simpson failing to capitalise on some excellent scoring in the final leg. Breakaways continue unbeaten after their visit to Que Pasa Kestrels. The visitors took the first three, Ivan Jones D2, Del Lister D14 and D15, obliging with the doubles, Mike Smith doing the Breakaways scoring with 180 and 120. Gilly Kirby 100,85 countering for the hosts. Russell Lyness D20 reduced the deficit only for Paul Lear to close the 601 after Smith had set things up with 98 and 100, Gilly Kirby outstanding for the Kestrels. Lister made it 1-5 at the break with D11 after a 120 and 137. Lyness D10 and Chris Miles D8 reduced the score to 3-5 only for the Bears to take all remaining legs. The best of these was Long John Kirby 2x81 playing Smith who rattled off 83,100,81 and D20. Gilly Kirby´s 134 not enough to take out Lear D20. Misfits girls looked impressive this week as Leah Chesworth D2,D8 and Sonya Cooper hitting a 125 and D18 for the opening three. Debbie Wright pulled one back for the Royal family on D4 after narrowly missing a bull finish. Lorraine Cox D5 gained a second for their Majesties, Marie Dunne whacking in a 140. Some great scoring from Mrs. Cooper was wasted as the Queens made it all square at half time courtesy of Ann O´Keefe and Margaret Griffiths. Misfits took the next three through John Ashworth, Karl Cooper 140,D16 and Chesworth D5. Rachael Broadhead got the Queens fourth leg in about the same time as Gary Anderson took to win his World championship. The last two went the Misfits way, Jo Brown celebrating until her battery ran out, Sonya Cooper making it 8 for the hosts. I bumped into the affable Simone de Lacy in the week, last season´s Ladies Merit Table winner, who really loves her darts. She tells me the current format of two divisions is working really well and all the teams who have expressed an opinion agree with the sentiment. Simone mentioned the vageries of how to close a 501 the best way to include percentages etc and we thought it a good idea to include an item on the subject next week. Here´s one to start! Your opponent is on a double for the league title and its your throw. After your first dart you require 15. What do you go for? The semi final draw for both the KO Cup and Handicap Plate will take place this week, also entry forms for the new triples event will be distributed. Entries for this may be mixed, fee 5 euros. Merit Table positions will be published next week.

FOUR TIME MAJOR WINNER Ernie Els’s course on the Malaysian island of Langkawi lies amidst a million year old tropical rainforest stretching to the shores of the Andaman Sea. Originally designed in 1992, the 18 hole championship course has been completely renovated and reopened to rave reviews. The Els Club Teluk Datai, managed by Troon Golf, was built to strict environmentally friendly standards, and “aims to preserve and enhance the natural environment amidst unique luxury and eco golf educational experience” whatever that means. THE HONDA CLASSIC (23rd February) at PGA National is one of the premier events on the PGA TOUR, and players compete for a purse of over $5.6 million. Russell Henley prevailed last year in a four man playoff against Russell Knox, Ryan Palmer and Rory McIlroy. McIlroy began the day with a two shot lead, but stumbled with a final round 74. However he did improve as the year went on. JIM FURIK COMMENTED on how the initial Ryder Cup task force meeting at Palm Beach went. “It was productive,” he said. “We didn’t come up with any answers, but we wanted to air everyone’s thoughts. It was a very open discussion; nobody felt like they had to hold anything back if they weren’t happy.” As the players airing their opinions included Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Raymond Floyd we can be pretty sure their feelings were well and truly aired. SCHOOL OF GOLF’s MARTIN HALL says fairway wood problems are often related to a lack of understanding about how to execute the shot. Trying to sweep the ball off the ground, as many players have been taught, is apparently a mistake. Hitting slightly down on the ball and taking a small divot is the actual goal. “If you can make that adjustment you'll see immediate improvement when it comes to accuracy and distance,” says Martin. I’ll try anything once. THE EUROPEAN OPEN, founded in 1978, was played at various courses in England, including Sunningdale and Walton Heath. At it’s height the total prize money reached £2.4 million. It folded in

2009 due to lack of sponsorship. The current deal with BMW expired after the PGA last year at Wentworth. The European Tour has been struggling to find sponsors. The tax man doesn’t help either, dipping into the prize money overseas competitors make in the UK. Graham McDowell says he would like to see the revival of the iconic events on the European Tour. It’s been a tough 7 or 8 years; losing events in Spain, Germany and the UK. However, things are looking up. There will be 6 new European Tour events this year. I know they include the Thailand Classic, Indian Open and Mauritius Open, but the European Open is to return in September, albeit in Germany. Then there’s the ever popular Irish Open in May, and Paul Lawrie is to host a new tournament, the Saltire Matchplay in July on the Murcar Links, his home course near Aberdeen, as part of the Race to Dubai. The British Masters could also be returning for the first time since 2008. So cheer up Graham, all is not lost. JAZZ GREATS such as Count Basie will put harmony into your putting stroke, according to new research. Male players are 17% and ladies 10% more accurate while listening to jazz on the practice green. Country music improves baseball performance and rap raised basketball skills but jazz does it for golfers. It is suggested it helps them calm down, concentrate and improvise on the green. So on with the headphones: “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing!” Until next time, happy golfing. Contact Mick for all your regripping and repair requirements. Tel: 638 859 475.

EL PLANTIO 2 GOLF SOCIETY By John O'Brien This weeks competition was a Waltz, there was 21 players and we went out in teams of three, only one score to count on hole one, two on hole two and three on hole three, then it's back to one score again. The day started cloudy and very chilly, but as the match progressed the weather warmed up and so did the golf, so much so that by the time one member reached the 7th he was so hot he managed a hole in one, well done to Dave Swann, shame about the next hole, he didn't score, ah well! thats golf. There were some good scores in today but the top three all managed the same score. The results this week: Nearest the pin: Hole 5; Gordon Abba & hole 9; Ian Craig

3rd place: Dave Smith, Dave Swann & Rod Loveday with 75pts. 2nd place: John O'Brien, Laurence Wanty & Bryan Watson with 75pts 1st place: Ian Craig, Gordon Wayne & Bob Bryant with 75pts. The next competition is on Tuesday20th January at El Plantio. Put your name on the list in the club house by Sunday, if you would like to play. Be sure to be there well before 9am on Tuesday. New members are welcome to join the El Plantio Golf Society, where special membership price is available for anyone who joins the Society. The Invitational Rinks League restarted with the visit of Emerald Isle Blues and a lovely morning in glorious sunshine was had by all. A really tight game with El Rancho winning one rink comfortably, losing one rink and the third was won by El Rancho on the last end by one shot, to give ER the two points. The friendly rink proved to be a tight game right up to the last end and ended up being the expected draw. Friday found The Mustangs being entertained by Quesada Swifts, despite several close matches, Swifts took the rinks by 4 to 1 with the other drawn, and some scores belied the closeness of the play. But we had a splendid morning as usual at Quesada. Maxine Wright, Malc Elmore and Rod Wright 3-30. Geoff Wright, Barbara Jones and Geoff Jones 9-27. David Haynes, Richard Needham and Malc Sykes 9-22. HORADADA BOWLS CLUB

First week back after the festive season and the break did us no good at all as we lost all three of our games. On Monday we played Country Bowls at home and only gained 4 points in a 97 - 106 defeat. Our two winning rinks [again]were John Goddard, Roy Collins and Alan Pugh 34 - 18 and Mick Kirby, Ian Gillan and Giuseppi Galelli 15 - 12. On Tuesday we played the first game of the Federated Fours away at La Siesta. We lost by 45 shots to 53 and gained 2 points. Our winning rink was Carol and Jack Linehan, John Simpson and Alan Pugh 20 14. The rink skipped by Giuseppi Galelli lost by one shot on the last end. On Friday we entertained San Luis Tigers and gained 5 points in a drawn game of 98 shots each. Our two winning rinks were John Goddard, Jack Linehan and Alan Pugh 26 - 8 and Fred Trigwell, Jeff Hier and John Bailey 20 - 17. So in three games we only gained 11 points overall. This is a poor return. Some of our players are blaming the change round of rinks but the question remains "how many of our team players have actually practiced since the leagues finished before Xmas"? Very few I think.

ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY VISTABELLA GOLF – 13th JANUARY For our first game of 2015 we took the short journey to Vistabella. to play a Medal competition for the Inaugural Trophy. The weather had a chill factor early on, that had many players wearing ‘beanies’ (That’s woolly hats) and wind cheaters, but after a few holes the sun came out and off came the beanies and wind cheaters. As usual the course was in good condition with but had its winter coat on. The greens were very, tricky, very fast and the pins in very hard positions and made putting tough; Results Gold Category: 1st Les Yates Nett: 75, 2nd Ron Swift Nett: 79, 3rd Larry Lambe Nett: 81 Silver Category: Ron Chambers Nett: 77 C/B, Ron Nicholson Nett: 77, Geoff Wild Nett 79 Nearest The Pins: Hole 8: Ivie Davies Hole 15: Les Yates Longest Drive: Alan Moody, Best Guest: Pete Daggatt Winner Of The Inaugural Trophy: Les Yates Les Yates retained the trophy for the third year in succession, no wonder his nickname is ‘Photo’ He is always in the frame! It was back to Izzy’s Bar for our favourite munchies, and Roxy’s Izzy Chips, all followed by “Rocket” Ron to present the prizes, the prize giving was delayed due to feast of the Izzy chips. Thanks Tony.

The Inaugural Trophy winner Les Yates

Next meeting on Tuesday 27th January at Alicante Golf first tee 09.10 am. Please be there for 08.30 am for your Tostado and coffee. The next League Game will take place at Los Colinas Golf on Friday 23rd January, our opponents are locals EuroToffs G S For more info or to play with arguably the friendliest Golf Society Ron Nicholson on 678849142 or email sanmigron@gmail.com

PADDY'S POINT GOLF SOCIETY @ LA SERENA 28 members and guests travelled down the motorway to play La Serena. The course is in great condition with very fast greens which caught out many players early on, it caught me out on the first par 3 (hole 3) where I needed 4 putts!! It's great to see the work that La Serena have done over the last 2 years to get the course back to it's pristine condition. Many thanks to Raquel, Karolina and staff. Captain, Ian Comaskey, couldn't make the presentation, probably due to a broken fingernail or something! but Vice Captain, Paul Cullen, stood in for him admirably

Seamus receiving his prize from Rory and Vice Capt Paul Cullen

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Here we are at the start of 2015, and where better to start than at La Finca. The first stableford of the season and probably one of the hardest courses in the area. That said it is also one of the favourites, shown by members fresh from the UK wanting to play. Thirty four of us gathered at the course suitably dressed for the 8 degree temperature, with only one or two braving it with short sleeves and shorts. As it turned out their optimism was justified as the sun finally came out just before play began and after nine holes the jumpers came off. The course was in fine fettle with evidence of recent work on clearing out ditches and around the lakes, whether this helped is another thing. George Stewart played the best out of everyone carding just a couple over par on the back nine, but as always there is one shot that gets away and this was the same with George who missed a very very short putt for a 2. No doubt the scissors will be out! The winners follow: Gold Division: 1st George Stewart 38pts,2nd Harry Wilcock 29pts and 3rd Brian Coultate 28pts Silver Division: 1st Norman Potter 31pts, 2nd Rod Day 29pts and 3rd Tony Ellis 28pts Bronze Division: 1st Paul Carter 30pts, 2nd Bill Croft 27pts and 3rd Janet Candlin 25pts NTPs: Brian Coultate hole 3, George Stewart holes 6 and 16, Bob Berry hole 13. The 2s club was a rollover from the previous game, so the three lucky winners were very happy, they were Stan Earl, Bob Berry and Meirion Roberts. Finally to make his day, Gordon Cobb´s name was drawn out for the free game draw. Thanks to the Lo Crispin Tavern who took care of the `inner man` on our return finishing off a good day out.

NTP hole 3 - David McBride, NTP hole 9 - Seamus McGearailt NTP hole 15 - Davide Watt, NTP hole 17 - David Watt 2s pot was won by Jim Thow. Longest Drive - Genero Sanchez Best Guest - Jim Thow 30 pts 1st - Seamus McGearailt 36 pts, 2nd - Shaun Murphy 33 pts 3rd - Terry Fitzgerald 32 pts It was a great performance from Seamus with his first 18 holes since a knee restructuring operation 6 months ago. Well done and great to see you back in form. After the presentation Hazel and her staff looked after us with refreshments, I can highly recommend the burgers in Paddy's Point one of the best I have ever had. Many thanks to the bar and kitchen staff. An addition to our monthly competitions is President's Day at Las Colinas on Wednesday 25th February, the list is nearly full so if you want to play get your name on the list quickly. Wednesday 11th Feb - El Valle Wednesday 11th Mar - Riquelme - St Patrick's Day Trophy and the highlight of our year Wednesday 8th April - Las Colinas Captain's Day, followed by presentation dinner that night at Las Ramblas. To play in any of these events please give your name to the bar staff at Paddy's Point, book early to avoid disappointment.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY

By Mike Chapman We started the week with a 6x6x6 with one score to count on the first 6 holes, two on the second 6 and three on the final 6 holes. There was little to choose between all 7 teams with only 7 points separating the first and last teams. The winners with 78 pts were Benedicte Kruse, Bryan Neal, Brian Dent and guest Pat Britten who were 2 pts clear of second placed team of Alan Douglas, Mike Chapman, Barry Britten (guest) and 'Albert'. On Wednesday we played our weekly individual stableford competition in lovely conditions for golf. Two players bettered par with 37 pts each but it was Mr Consistency Tom Hardie who came out on top following a count back with Mike Frankish to win Category One. Joyce McClusky was the winner in Category Two and has been in the frame in each of the past 3 weeks. There were no winners of the 2's Club this week so a decent pot will be available next week. The days results were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Tom Hardie 37 pts (c/b) 2nd Mike Frankish 37 pts 3rd Liz Robertson 36 pts (on c/b from Bryan Neal Cat 2. 1st Joyce McClusky 34 pts 2nd Geoff Biggerstaff 33 pts 3rd Barry Holtham 31 pts We played a Change Partners game on Friday in cold and windy conditions and it was the team of Terry Field who won yet again with some considerable help from Geoff Biggerstaff with 29 pts in 10 holes. The others, who together scored an excellent 89 pts, were Nick Campbell and Ron Percival. Ahead of them after 12 holes were the team of Jan Svendsen, Maria Oldenziel, Marlene Billen and Mike Chapman with Maria scoring 16 pts in 5 holes however they were overtaken on the final 6 holes to finish in second place with 86 pts.

CESAR BRACE LIFTS SUPER TORRY INTO SECOND MURO CF ................2 CD TORREVIEJA ......4 Muro CF went into Sunday evening’s game still hurting from last weekend’s disastrous 5-0 defeat away at Cullera prior to which manager Pepe Aroca had guided them to a couple of decent wins and a spot in the Tercera play offs. But having dropped from 4th to 8th as a result of that reversal Aroca said that he was hoping that the visit of CD Torrevieja would provide his side with the springboard needed to get their season back on track. The Salineros however had ideas of their own having gathered 11 points from their last 5 matches with Galiana guiding his side from 16th to 5th, just a single point from that much sought after 4th spot. So there was all to play for at La Llometa on Sunday evening with neither outfit daring to consider anything but a win. And it was the home side that got off to the quicker start, almost punishing Torry in the opening seconds. After Lucas had lobbed the advancing Oscar it was only the quick thinking Alexis that saved Torry from going a goal behind when he tracked back to clear off the line and save a certain goal. Muro continued to exert pressure during those opening minutes so they were stunned when a break on 5 minutes saw an exquisite cross from Adrian nicely met by Cesar for the Torry striker to power his header into the back of the Muro net. At that stage the pressure had all been exerted by the home team. But this was the lift that the visitors needed and as their confidence grew so did their grip on the game. Torry had the ball

in the net for a 2nd time on 7 minutes but the goal was rightly disallowed by the referee for a push. But the Salineros just kept coming. Although Oscar was called into action with an excellent save from Mario on 16 mins as a result of a rare Muro raid it was all CD Torrevieja with both Ferran and Cesar going close. The pressure paid off on 24 mins when the visitors went further ahead. Once again it was the hard working Cesar who shot under the legs of Gil in the Muro goal after being fed through by Rafa Gomez. This game really was a great advert for Tercera football and at that stage it showed just how much Torry had improved since the turn of the year both in physicality and in skill. The visitors kept their momentum for long periods of the 2nd half adding a 3rd through Adrian from a Rafa assist on 57 mins and a 4th from Rafa himself with a low drive on 67 mins. At this stage it was no more than they deserved but as is often the case they took their foot off the gas to allow Muro back into the Game. Mario pulled one back on 68 mins and then Lucas added a Muro 2nd on 85 mins to give the home side at least a mark of respectability. But all in all this was a polished performance from the Salineros and their very first win at La Llometa will surely give them extra confidence going into the final months of the season. Next Sunday Torrevieja entertain lowly Ribarroja in a game kicking off at the Vicente Garcia at 5pm when new signing Pinera from Segunda B outfit Yeclano could well be on show.

CAFÉ UNO GOLF SOCIETY. By S.Lawrence. This week, Thursday15th Jan 2015 was our second game of the new year, and not a good start to the year with a poor turn out due to players dropping out with various illnesses, I guess it is that time of year for it! CLARKES BAR GOLF SOCIETY This week we paid our first trip of the year to Alicante to play a stableford competition. The course was in its usual good condition although some of the green were bumpy and needing a little TLC. This did not deter our winner, Alison Campbell who scored a vey creditable 38 points to just hold off Mick Jackson on count back. This was a welcome return to form especially for Mick as he has been off form for some time. The nearest the pins went to Robert Wardrop on hole 3 and Dave Somerville on hole 12 (a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing day) with Graham Haywood getting nearest to the par 4 2nd in 2. The longest drive went to Charlie Rodgers who just about squeezed his ball past Alison's excellent effort. All results and fixtures can be seen on our website "societygolfing.co.uk". Next week we are at Vistabella first tee at 08:33 so meet at the course at 08:00
