THE THE GREA GREAT T WINTER WINTER FU FUEL EL ROBBERY ROBBERY

Following a 13-fold rise in the number of expats claiming the Winter Fuel benefit in the last decade it is not really surprising that the government is looking at the figures with a view to reducing or even discontinuing the benefit for those living overseas, and if any scrutiny were carried out in an evenhanded way I am sure that many of us would welcome its conclusions. Unfortunately, rather than fulfil such a study the Chancellor has simply announced ‘a

crackdown’ which those rather more cynical members of the expat society feel is simply a case of winning a few votes prior to the UK elections, rather than any real attempts at making monetary savings. This crackdown would disqualify an estimated 120,000 people and, according to Osborne, save £30million a year after 2015/16, when it is expected to come into force. There are other figures in circulation that suggest that the numbers could well be much, much lower. The latest information for Spain shows 33,815 pensioners living here receive the payment, worth £200 for the over-60s and £300 for those over 80. Continued on Page 2

This costs taxpayers £5.8 million a year, while interestingly, the current UK Foreign Aid Budget, much of which is squandered by unscrupulous politicians, is £11.5 billion. Unfortunately the perception is, with temperatures in Spain often reaching the low 60’s in December and January, the allowance is not required. What the Chancellor hasn’t considered is the regularity with which night time temperatures fall to freezing or below and the relatively poor insulation suffered by us in the majority of Spanish properties - NO GOVERNMENT GRANTS FOR INSULATING YOUR DWELLING OVER HERE FOLKS! The fact that many Spanish residents are also paying UK taxes is perhaps another detail that has been conveniently ignored by Mr Osborne. Also worth noting for Spain is that the Canary Isles and the 2 North African enclaves are included in the "average winter test" whilst the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, the Indian Ocean islands of Réunion and Mayotte and French Guiana in South America were added to average temperatures in mainland France. We should also be aware of the proven meteorological figures that in Chingford Essex, the constituency of the current Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan Smith, residents enjoy a warmer climate than parts of both France and Spain, which many expats will confirm, especially in the winter months, that temperatures can drop to -20°C, resulting in high energy and fuel costs on top of the increases in fuel costs levied by the major energy providers. Well at this stage not all has yet been lost because there is currently an E-Petition in existence, which has already attracted over 13,000 signatures, which really could make

ILLEGAL RENTERS COULD FACE PROSECUTION

After listening to bodies representing Hotel and Tourism sectors in the community the Valencia Government is to embark on a campaign aimed at rooting out illegal rental agencies and owners that are operating on the Costa Blanca. The Ministry of the Economy, Industry, Tourism and Employment say that they are now in the process of preparing a plan, in the form of a legal decree, which will punish ‘on line’ portals which currently market homes in tourist areas irregularly, ie without the minimum safety and quality certificates and authorities and without proper registration at the Generalitat. Those found to be in contravention of the law will face fines of between 50,000 and 90,000 euros Accompanied by employers from within the Tourism Council, the plan was announced in Valencia last week by the Minister of Economy, Maximo Buch. He said that the measures will be implemented from next spring, the season from which fraud within the tourist apartment sector tends to intensify. According to sources it is claimed that most digital platforms do not distinguish between legal and illegal renters (those who evade taxes and the necessary registration) and that the new decree will establish the "joint responsibility" of those marketing platforms. In future the owner of the holiday apartment or property will be responsible in paying the same fines as those responsible for the website, with very serious offenses incurring penalties of up to 90,000 euros. Both the hotel and non-hotel sectors applauded the

action saying that it would almost certainly help to improve their situation where unregulated apartments have been partly responsible in the average holiday occupancy dropping by four points from 70.1% in 2013 to just 66.1% last year. Hoteliers maintain that the illegal rental of apartments is a fraud to the Tax Agency, Social Security and to the Treasury and they have asked for more inspectors to manage this growing occurrence, where there are only five for the entire Region. They hoped that Valencia will follow the example of Catalonia, whose Ministry was the first to take action against illegal portals, although they accept that action is not quite that simple as the administrators of many of the Internet portals are living abroad. However a spokesman for the real estate promoter Provia says that 95% of all tourist accommodation in Torrevieja is based in apartments and villas and not in hotels, either through rental or via relations or friends, while the figure across the Costa Blanca is put slightly lower at 77%. They say that whilst such resorts as Benidorm wouldn’t be quite so affected, because of the hotel population, a more rigorous application of the current rules by Government regulations could completely destroy the tourism model for Torrevieja and other similar locations where there isn’t the same concentration of hotels. Many people bought their apartments or villas with a view to renting them out during the holiday seasons and if regulations were introduced to make that more difficult it would certainly affect the numbers purchasing property in the area in the future.

President of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, has said this week that thanks to the efforts of his government since the last election, after six years in power the future of the country now looks brighter than ever, and that in 2014 the country's GDP grew by 1.3 to 1.4%, which will result in the creation of about one million jobs in 2014 and 2015.

OILY THREAT Spain´s title of the world´s largest producer of olive oil may soon be under threat, after production in Tunisia is expected to quadruple this year, thus placing them in second place already. Expected domestic production of olive oil this year is estimated at 280,000 tons, nearly four times the 70 thousand tons harvested last season. Oddly, Spain, whose own production is estimated at 600,000 tons, is one of the largest importers of Tunisian olive oil, along with Italy.

TOWN HALL POSTAL SERVICE SUSPENDED José Manuel Dolon and José Hurtado, both councilors for Los Verdes (the Green Party) claimed last week that they have seen documentation showing that Correos suspended the postal contract with Torrevieja last September because of unpaid invoices despite repeated reminders. According to the pair, the debt amounted to 48,836 euros, corresponding to the first five months of the year. A lack of information prevented them from confirming just how long the service was interrupted, or when it was re-established, they said. Although Municipal sources admitted that there was a delay in payments they claim that the service was never suspended. However the contract for the Town Hall service has been re awarded in recent months to the State Post

Office for a renewable term of four years at a cost of about 88,000 per year. A PP spokesman said that this new contract achieved savings of around 144,000 euros during the contract period, compared to the cost of the service provided previously.

MUNICIPAL TEAMS TREAT TORREVIEJA’S PALMS Carmen Gómez Candel, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Parks and Gardens, announced that municipal teams are now pruning and treating the town’s palm trees in accordance with the guidelines laid out by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, which requires councils to carry out mandatory phytosanitary measures for the control and eradication of the pest "Rhynchophorus ferrugineus", the red palm weevil. Work got underway last Monday and will continue until the end of February during which time the authorities will be required to carry out a number of road closures in the city, although she assures everyone that these will be kept to an absolute minimum. A full list of the closures is available from the Policia Locale. Ms Gomez said that the council will also be carrying out treatment against the red palm weevil to those palms which are in public ownership. She said that her staff are available to the owners of infected palms, and the Technical Team will provide advice and treatment in order to prevent and eradicate the plague of the red palm weevil in the city.

LEADER N332 DUAL CARRIAGEWAY TO BE EXTENDED ADVERTISING HOTLINE

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, announced last week that tenders will shortly be invited from companies wishing to carry out the conversión of the 8 kilometre stretch of the N332 from single to dual carriageway, between km markers 53-61. He said that preliminary studies have now been completed by the Valenciana Generalitat and the Highways Traffic Agency who have been looking specifically at the stretch along the highway from the CV 905 to the CV 95 at Los Balcones which carries approximately 33,250 vehicles per day. He said that the work would also include measures necessary to ensure that the regular flooding of the area is remedied as well as consideration for pedestrians and cyclists who might also wish to use the road. Initially he said that the authorities must take the steps required to complete the necessary environmental procedures before transferring the privately owned land into public ownership. The bidding process will then be put into place for the work, the budget for which is 32 million euros, costs for which would be borne by the Valenciana Generalitat.

EVERYONE NEEDS MERCADONA’S GOOD NEIGHBOURS HIDDEN TREASURES

It´s not uncommon for many of us to take for granted the little things that make the world a better place, but here at The Leader, we would like to pay more attention to those people who go the extra mile to make this world a better place, and we need your help. If you know somebody who you feel deserves to have a little attention for their efforts then let us know. Perhaps it´s a neighbour who constantly tends to your communal gardens, somebody who has cared for you in times of stress or worry. Maybe it´s somebody who cares without question for another neighbour of friend, doing the shopping, driving them to market, or looking after a beloved pet. Maybe a charity worker who works quietly in the background or somebody who dedicates their time at a local community initiative. It might even be a business who do that little bit more to help, in

fact, we really don´t mind who, why or what you feel they contribute to the community, we would like to honour them in a small way. In fact, the word “community” is one that is often talked about both here in Spain and the UK. Sadly, the conversation often revolves around the lack of community spirit where we live, but there are always those who still do their very best to try to bridge that gap. If you do know someone who you think deserves to be recognised you can email the details, remembering to tell us as much about them and yourself that you think is important, to office@theleader.info, or you can just write down the details and drop them into our offices at Los Dolces. In the coming months we will look at showcasing as many worthy residents as we can, as we all acknowledge that not only does everybody need good neighbours, they are here amongst us.

Next time you´re shopping in your local Mercadona supermarket keep an eye out for the murals that adorn the walls, mainly in the meat and fish sections. Since 2011, the retail chain has collaborated with around a dozen foundations, none profit organisations and occupational canters dedicated to help those with intellectual difficulties, which has resulted in 3,500 decorative panels being produced by some 200 artists as part of their rehabilitation process. The creative process starts with the help of a company called Pamesa Cerámica, who provide the entities with broken pieces of pottery and ceramics, which the artists then use to create their masterpieces which are then proudly displayed in the supermarkets. Although little flag-waving has ever been given to the campaign, Arantxa Roig the director of the Fundación Roig Alfonso, explained that “since we started working with Mercadona we have created hundreds of panels to decorate the supermarkets. Thanks to the orders of the murals, users get a paid job through which skills such as coordination and concentration to fit the pieces of pottery and drawings together are enhanced. They strive to give the best of themselves, surpassing every day and are very proud of their work”. The origin of the idea was born in 2010 with the development of a decorative mural for the fish department for a new Mercadona store in Valencia. That mural was so successful that Mercadona began collaborating with more social entities requesting

the production of the same type of mosaic which is similar in style to that of famed artist Antoni Gaudí. The style known as “Trencadís” can be seen in much of Gaudís work, such as at the Parc Güell in Barcelona, as well as similar creations in places like Torrevieja and Los Arenales, to name but a few, and now, we can see the artwork created by those who are giving a little bit back to society in Mercadona stores around the country, and if you spot one, be sure to seek out the logo of the social entity and maybe even the artist who has created their own little work of art.

YOUR LOCAL NEWS ROUNDUP CHILD PORN ARRESTS Officers from the National Police have arrested 12 men, all of Spanish nationality, and accused of being involved in a child pornography distribution network. The ages of those detained range from under 30 to over 70, with the majority falling in the 30 to 50 years of age group. Two of those arrested are teachers and two work as monitors. The arrests took place in homes in Alicante, Elda, Ibi, Novelda, Torrevieja and Vila Joiosa, in which “thousands” of files were seized, along with 8 computers, 36 hard drives and other electronic equipment. ORIHUELA POLICE ACTIONS The local police have had a busy week dealing with a variety of domestic incidents. On Tuesday they were called to a house in the San Isidro area where a person had requested assistance through the 112 emergency number. They found the victim injured and had to be transferred to hospital, whilst the alleged perpetrator tried to assault the attending officers with a large knife whilst attempting to flee the

scene. Later more officers arrested an individual for violating a prohibition issued by the Court of Orihuela, approaching a protected female victim within the 200 metre exclusion zone. PRIORITISING ANTI-CORRUPTION Whilst the National and Regional groups of the Partido Popular are battling to clean up their image, and faced with the difficulties of their Orihuela representatives refusing to vote in an anti-corruption motion, this week has seen Torrevieja fuelling the fire of controversy after the local spokesperson, Joaquín Albaladejo, said that for the Torrevieja group, a similar anti-corruption motion “is not a priority”. The Torrevieja mayor, Eduardo Dolón, defended is colleague, saying that his statement had been taken out of context. SUPPORT OR GO Whilst paying a visit to Torrevieja this week, the Regional President of the Partido Popular, Alberto Fabra, has said that “Anyone who disagrees with the anti-corruption vote has to leave the PP”. The comment came in response to the continual growth in support for ousted PP Orihuela President Pepa Ferrando, who has now obtained around 800 votes in support of her reinstatement after leading the refusal to vote in the local plenary meeting.

A busy week for the Policia Local

FREE WIFI IN TORREVIEJA Torrevieja town hall has announced that free Wi-Fi access will be available in public spaces of the city, as well as the beaches, at a cost of 18,000 euro for the year, and will be provided by local company Televisión Costa Blanca. However, the downside is that users will only be able to access municipal websites and associations, and you will have to use your own data plan to access the internet beyond the local catchment.

FEELING BLUE The Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, will be joining other municipal representatives in Madrid on Thursday, in order to collect the 2015 Blue Flag accreditations for the beaches of the Orihuela Costa. With continual accusations over the standards of the beaches, many are expecting there to be fewer flags awarded this year, although the town hall themselves are confident of the results. ELECTRIFYING THEATRE The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja are adding more issues to the long list of problems that the ruling Partido Popular government are failing to deal with at the Municipal Theatre, claiming that the Ministry of Economy and Industry detected serious deficiencies in the low voltage electrical installation in the building, which was issued with an order to remedy the fault, which they considered to be a danger. The deficiencies were detected in the periodic review submitted by Torrevieja to the Territorial Service of Industry in September, 2012, with corrections required before November of 2013, but the action is allegedly still outstanding. This issue is the latest in a series of problems surrounding the theatre and its safe and legal operation. CARNIVAL COLLAPSE The ticket office at Torrevieja´s Municipal Theatre was brought to a standstill this week, as demand for tickets to attend shows as part of this year´s carnival celebration saw unprecedented queues. Many hopeful attendees decided to give up the wait after half an hour of queuing, with municipal sources suggesting that purchasing tickets through the internet may be a better option. AS ONE DOOR CLOSES Shoppers who frequented the “Chinese Shop” next to the Orihuela Costa town hall will be disappointed to hear that it has closed down after many years serving the Playa Flamenca area. However, as one store closes its doors, another one opens, as the former Eroski supermarket located on the commonly referred to Old Alicante road in Torrevieja, Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, will soon open as a megastore selling cost price goods of Chinese origin on 5,000 square metres of retail space with another 7,000 metres parking.

SPAIN STILL CHEAPER THAN THE UK TO LIVE

An internet site aimed at helping to ease the burden of moving abroad, has compiled a list of global data revealing the cost of living for those looking to relocate. Whilst factoring in such elements as the cost of housing and food, with data provided by Numbeo, Movehub reveals that Switzerland, Norway, Venezuela, Iceland and Denmark are at the top of the list when it comes to the high cost of living, whereas those looking to save on their daily life costs should look towards developing nations like India, Nepal, Pakistan, Tunisia and Algeria. The data is collated by means of a Consumer Price Index, used to determine the difference in the living costs between countries, which takes into account the prices of groceries, transportation, restaurants and utilities. For this latest data revelation, the CPI is based on a country's living costs compared to New York. So, for instance, if a country has a CPI of 70, on average it enjoys 30% cheaper living costs compared to New York. For its part, Spain comes in with a CPI of 65.7, far lower than the assessed cost of living in the UK, which is relatively similar itself to New York, on average, in the 92.9 CPI. Spain is therefore also slightly cheaper than the likes of Zimbabwe, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates, but slightly more expensive than Slovenia, Jamaica and Costa Rica. In terms of what is classed as an everyday cost of living, a Cappuccino in Alicante will set you back the equivalent of £1.28, £1.32 in Barcelona, £1.70 in Madrid, £1.28 in Málaga and £1.70 in Marbella. A cinema ticket costs £6.01 in Alicante, £6.82 in Barcelona and Madrid, £7.03 in Málaga and £5.88 in Marbella. Petrol costs £1.19 in

Alicante, £1.24 in Barcelona and Madrid, £1.21 in Málaga and £1.17 in Marbella. For the little tipple, wine will cost £4.03 in Alicante, £4.26 in Barcelona, £3.92 in Madrid, £2.98 in Málaga and £4.88 in Madrid. Finally, the average rent is £511.49 in Alicante, £937.73 in Barcelona, £1,193.48 in Madrid, £575.43 in Málaga and £852.48 in Marbella. Making comparison to the UK, our cappuccino will cost £2.29 in Birmingham, £2.49 in Brighton, £2.09 in Edinburgh, £1.99 in Leeds, and £2.49 in London. A cinema ticket is £6.98 in Birmingham, £14.95 in Brighton, £7.97 in Edinburgh, £7.60 in Leeds, and £11.26 in London. As for vehicle fuel, we are looking at £1.37 in Birmingham and Brighton, £1.35 in Edinburgh, ££1.38 in Leeds, and £1.40 in London. Our little tipple of wine works out on average at £4.98 in Birmingham, £4.97 in Brighton, £6.73 in Edinburgh, £6.33 in Leeds, and £6.98 in London. Finally, the average rent is £996.45 in Birmingham, £1,295.38 in Brighton, £996.45 in Edinburgh, £797.16 in Leeds, and £2590.76 in London There is no doubt of course that prices will differ in all cities and the different businesses within those cities,

7

but these figures are calculated as an average using the same formula across the entire globe. There may be discrepancies in the separate prices, but the differences between the countries is based on the same criteria, and is therefore indicative of the overall cost of living. There is no doubt however that despite rising prices across much of the developed world, Spain still remains a more cost effective option to the many expatriates who have chosen the country as a home, and the many more still choosing to invest in property whilst the prices are so low, the lowest they have been for many years, although starting to rise once again.

THE EYESORE OF ADVERTISING BILLBOARDS Despite threats and action against their sometimes illegal and often ugly practices, the emergence of guerrilla marketing techniques along the Orihuela Costa areas seems to be exploding once more. This week, a number of residents living near to the La Zenia motorway access site have raised the issue of what many are calling a “monstrosity” of a new, four-sided advertising hoarding that has been erected near to the motorway site. The area is already flooded with advertising boards and this latest stands tall above the existing ones, creating an even bigger eyesore than what was already there. The location near to a motorway has also been questioned, as to whether the visibility could be a distraction for drivers. Motorways and highways are designed at most to be without distractions, on account of the risk to drivers that these can pose. The sudden appearance of an advert, illuminated at night, may well go against the safety conscious design of this type of road. In October of 2013 we reported how both Orihuela and Torrevieja town halls had announced a clampdown on illegal advertising billboards, with the infrastructure department of Orihuela stating that the majority of these hoardings do not meet the minimum legal requirements, such as identification of the owner of the board, a reference or check number, many lack liability insurance and some have been erected, illegally, on public land. Despite the threat and action in one or two places, most of those hoardings which lack the required notices still seem very much present, and even more are being erected all the time, such as one of the most recent locations behind a town hall owned building at Alameda del Mar. Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, explains that despite appearances, many of the advertising hoardings have been removed and demolished, but many of them have been legalised. In fact, Scheurer explained, one of the biggest companies which operate in the area, Publianton, received a fine nearing a quarter of a million euro. Whilst they were forced to take action at a number of sites, many of them were successfully legalised and allowed to remain, now compliant with the requirements. Publianton are part of the Grupo Anton company who are based in Elche and were ranked the third biggest such company in Spain last year, only ranking behind two international firms, and so the number one domestic public hoarding company in the country. The company, which was established in 1969, has over 2,000 sites in the southeast of Spain. Industry experts state that such bold advertising strategies can increase brand awareness by up to 25% and sales by up to 28%, so long as the advertising campaign is cleverly identified to meet the needs of the target audience of the advertiser. However, when adverts appear on hoardings at sites which

the coast with flyers came to an end without resorting to fines”. Whilst also acknowledging that the matter relating to the N-332 bridges was far more complicated, the town hall had to deal with the ministry for the national road, eventually transferring competences to local control, allowing the local police to intervene, which “To this day this practice seems to have been eradicated”, Houliston says. With the threat of fines and action still present, quite how long the skyline and the streets of the Orihuela Costa can continue to be polluted remains to be seen, but one thing that is clear is that the overall opinion of the area relies on the impression given to those who visit or attend to maybe holiday of invest in property, and if the area is allowed to degenerate, then the impact will be felt by everyone living or working in what ought to be a beautiful area of the Costa Blanca. The other reoccurring menace that many residents see reappearing is that of printed flyers being placed on windscreens and car door handles. It was in 2011 that we reported how the then Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Bob Houliston, had taken action against businesses who were creating unnecessary litter by posting advertising flyers on car windows, and others were creating an often offensive eyesore by Whilst we appreciate that many of the boards are illeplacing advertising posters on a gal and the council is taking action to have them range of street fixtures. Once again, although brand awareness may well be key to the strategy of placing flyers, the negative opinion of the many who don´t appreciate them being placed on their vehicles, often discarding them to the street, and the subsequent mess that the residents then have to put up with have all been known to have a negative impact on the advertiser. Houliston still recalls his attention to the problem, saying that “When I was appointed Councillor for the Coast in June, 2011, one of the first priorities I assigned myself was to do something about the litter on the streets from commercial flyers and the desecration of the pedestrian bridges over the N332 by lewd posters advertising discotheques and night clubs. These practices contravene bye laws but their provisions had never been enforced. We began to write formally to those who were responsible, mainly a limited number of repeated offenders, pointing out that what they were doing was against the law and could result in fines unless they stopped. At first the letters were ignored or returned undelivered and so we persisted with further letters which were sometimes delivered by the local police to underline our seriousness. SUPREME COURT BACKS HORADADA IN BORDER DISPUTE The Municipality of Pilar de la Horadada received the welcome news last week of the Supreme Court ruling that finally settles in their favour the boundary, first established in 1756, with the bordering town of San Pedro del Pinatar. The current southern border will remain unchanged

LICENSE GAMBLE The Spanish Gambling Authority (Dirección General de Ordenación del JuegoDGOJ) has published notice that the application renewal of the singular gambling licenses that were granted in 2012 with an initial validity of three years (specifically singular licenses for the development and operation of fixed-odds horse racing betting, roulette, baccarat, and blackjack), must be filed before the 1 February. Operators failing to submit the renewal request on time shall have to stop operating by 1 June 2015.

On 17 December the high court dismissed the claims made by San Pedro over an area covering almost half a million square metres. They said that no change is to be made to the border that divides the regions of Valencia and Murcia, a dispute which began nine years ago when the Pinatar mayor was accused of trespassing after he ordered that two of the stones marking the border should be moved. The first attempt to resolve the dispute favoured Horadada when the Department of the Environment confirmed that the border would remain in accordance with the line drawn in 1756. The Pinatar Ayuntamiento then appealed, although that was also rejected in 2011. Jose Fidel Ros, the current mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, has said that he is delighted with the Supreme Court decision, particularly as all court costs will now have to be met by the San Pedro del Pinatar town hall. He said that he has always felt that the historical boundary, that runs through the centre of El Mojon, should be maintained.

Spain’s top football league, La Liga, is breaking records with its YouTube channel which has seen more than 100 million video views since its launch two years ago. The La Liga channel, operated by Mediapro, owner of the football TV rights, currently has 560,000 subscribers and has distributed 250 million minutes of video since 2012. Video clips from La Liga are made available via the @LaLiga account using Twitter’s Amplify tool that enables users to attach videos to tweets in real time with La Liga making highlights of every game for users around the world as they occur.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

112 - Emergency, Emergency! Do you know how to contact emergency services, such as asking for medical assistance, ambulance, police or fire services? If you are in the UK, most people will know that when you dial 999 you will receive prompt and efficient attention to whatever crisis that you find yourself in. What about when you are overseas on holiday, or maybe living in another country as an expat? I was surprised to learn that there are many holidaymakers and expats living in Spain, the Canary Islands and other parts of Europe who not know how to contact the relevant emergency services. Services equivalent to the UK’s 999 service exist in all European countries, which can be easily accessed by dialling 112. In Spain and the Canary Islands, for instance, assistance is offered in English, Spanish, German, Italian and French, so there is no need to worry about language barriers. This 112 Emergency Service is available to everyone 24 hours a day, and for 365 days a year, free of charge from any fixed telephone line or mobile, and without the need for any dialling codes. Recently, I visited one of the two 112 coordinating centres for the Canary Islands in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which opened in 1998, becoming part of the European System for Emergency Response.

This centre is a public service, with similar centres operating in each of Spain’s provinces. In the Canary Islands, many of its emergency services are water-related accidents, such as accidents at sea or at the beaches, as well as the usual range of medical, police and fire incidents. In the operations room, I saw calls being received, and information being collected by a co-ordinator of services and efficiently categorised before being referred to one of the specialist teams based in the centre. In the case of a health emergency, a doctor on duty at the centre answers the call, assesses the situation before responding with an ambulance, helicopter or plane to deal with the emergency. Security and fire emergencies are dealt with in a similar manner. In addition, the centre is able to give support to women suffering from domestic violence, who are given immediate advice and support. Of course, this support is a two-way process, so that if you are involved in an incident that requires help from the emergency services, it is important that all the necessary questions are answered correctly. It is vital to give clear and accurate information at this stage in order to receive the best possible support. For holidaymakers and residents living in the Canary Islands, there is a recent new addition to the service, which is unique to the Canary Islands, and a few other locations. This is a service called FRESS, which is the Next Generation Emergency Response, and is available as a free App that can be downloaded for most mobile phones. This exciting innovation allows those facing an emergency to simply press a button to activate FRESS on their phone and receive immediate and enhanced support from the 112 response team. FRESS connects by voice, instant text message or video communication, and automatically sends your location, name, age, phone number and previously recorded medical details to the centre, as well as translating the emergency call into the required language. Although, currently, FRESS is only operating on a trial basis in some areas of Poland, Italy, the US, Mexico, the Philippines and Malaysia, it is now fully operational in the Canary Islands, which has provided an ideal location for such a service to be thoroughly tested. It was fascinating to learn of the possibilities that this life saving app could give.

An Emergency Response Centre in the Canary Islands

It has the potential to operate worldwide, doing away with the need to remember a whole host of emergency numbers that other countries use, such as 999, 112, 911 and 066. As it develops, FRESS will offer huge safety benefits to travellers, holidaymakers and expats worldwide. I was impressed to witness the skills, dedication and support given by the team on duty during my visit. It is a service that I guess we rarely think about until we need it. For holidaymakers and expats, it is important to remember that support is given in five languages, including English. It is good to know that it is there for us all in an emergency. BARCELONA CITY BY TRAIN Travel by train to this large, lively, exciting coastal city. Visit all the exciting places that you have heard of! See the thought provoking buildings of Antonio Gaudi, his masterpiece of course being the "unfinished cathedral" which was built in the late 19th century as a tribute to the coming 20th century, and still remains unfinished in the 21st century, but what a stunning piece of architecture it is. Then, marvel at the wonderful Camp Nou football stadium, home to the mighty Barcelona football club and a whole range of other sporting teams, basketball, volley ball, base ball and so on. Then on the outskirts, you have the university parks centred round the old Royal Palace. Then there is the mountain of the Jews (Montjuic), with a castle overlooking the bay. Cable cars sweep across from here to the port and beyond. The 1992 Olympics were held in Barcelona and the city still benefits from the superb facilities built for this event. In the Marina hundreds of small yachts bob up and down in the waves created by passing mini cruisers which are packed with happy sightseers. In the nearby "Rambla" clearly the best known street in Spain, passers by are entertained by an incredible variety of performers, busking for an income. This ranges from highly talented to outright zany. Flower vendors and artists compete with the entertainers for the many thousands of euros, which pass hands every day in this street. In the square in front of the original theatre, you encounter "classy" buskers, mostly music students earning a crust, playing some genuinely beautiful music on the cello, violin, and harp amongst other instruments.

The Spanish Supreme Court has accepted a Paternity claim filed by Ingrid Sartiau, a Belgian woman, against the former King Juan Carlos, the father of King Felipe VI although it rejected a similar suit brought by a Spanish man, Albert Solà Jiménez. The suits were originally filed in lower courts in Madrid around two years ago, but they were thrown out at the time because Juan Carlos, as head of state, enjoyed legal immunity. When he passed the throne on to his son in June of last year, the former king lost that immunity and instead became an “aforado,” a person who can only be tried by the Supreme Court.

GOING MOBILE The organisers of the Mobile World Congress are confident that Barcelona will continue to be the home for the annual event, even after the current contract expires in 2018. Agustí Cordón, Vice President of Mobile World Capital Barcelona, says that “if the congress goes well”, as before, and MWCB “do what you have to do”, this contract should be extended with “no problem” and Barcelona would remain the headquarters the world's largest gathering of mobile technology. The next event takes place from the 2nd of March at the Gran Via de Fira Barcelona, located in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona.

THE ROJALES PANTOMIME GROUP Cinderella was a huge success for The Rojales Pantomime group and raised 3,000 euros which will be shared between various local charities (To be agreed at their AGM in February.) ANIMAL CRUELTY IN SAN FULGENCIO

By Brian Anderson Tourism brochures and publicity leads people to believe that in San Fulgencio all things are bright and beautiful for all creatures great and small. However, despite denuncias and appeals led by Mark Lewis, the foremost animal welfare protagonist and founder of the Pets In Spain animal welfare charity, the council continued the annual barbaric tradition of collecting live animals, hanging them upside down on a pole with zip ties, and parading them around the village streets. During the cruel procession local children look on in bewilderment. Even more ironic is that the councillor for animals, Susana Ortuno, is in this cruel procession playing the clarinet in the San Fulgencio municipal band! The San Fulgencio council Facebook page has a collection of photos which shows Mayor Carlos Ramirez and his government team grabbing the live animals and stringing them up on a pole for their long torment before their final fate!

A NEW ENGLISH TEACHING SYSTEM ON THE COSTA BLANCA If you know somebody looking to learn English, then you need to tell them about a new and unique teaching system has arrived on the Costa Blanca. Thanks to Debbie Coupe, the new professional and yet simple and child-friendly system will aid them on the path of learning to speak, read and write in English. The Sounds-Write Programme is presented by Debbie Coupe, who started teaching after gaining a degree in Education at Christ Church University in Canterbury. Having taught in both mainstream and special education, Debbie also became the head of the Primary department for 6 years and wrote and implemented a topic-based curriculum for the new National Curriculum in 2014. The Sounds-Write system has both a psychological and rational behind its methods, which has a range of levels depending on the ability of the learner, “It is the only scheme I have come across that uses the alphabet as a reversible code in other words speaking, reading and writing must be learnt together”, Debbie explains.

“At its heart it teaches children to segment, blend and manipulate sounds, or phonemes”, Debbie continued, whilst explaining how “we have 44 sounds in our language and only 26 letters of the alphabet to make those sounds”. Although Sounds-Write has a step by step prescribed programme element it also has computer software, games and its own set of accompanying books to support the child´s progress and success. Now, having taken early retirement from teaching, Debbie and her husband have moved to the house in Spain they have had for 10 years, and although sad to leave grown up children and four lovely grandchildren, Debbie hopes to transfer her skills to support speaking, reading and writing within a safe and happy environment, whilst continuing to do something that she both loves and is good at here on the Costa Blanca. For more information you can call Debbie on 965 319 227, or her mobile 638 283 910 and see her advert on page 3 in The Leader newspaper.

EYEWEAR WINTER TREND GUIDE

January is a great time to update your look and glasses are a quick and easy way to refresh your style and make a statement, by carrying through some of the latest trends. Natasha Gray, Global Stylist and Frame Communications Manager, from optical brand Specsavers has put together an overview of winter trends which you can apply to your glasses and accessories and start 2015 looking great. Marine Theme - This trend sees stunning marine colours applied to frames for both men and women. The great thing about blue and green frames is that they emphasise the natural colours of the iris, enlarge the appearance of the eyes, and bring them into focus in a flattering way. These shades complement a range of skin tones and will work well with most of your wardrobe, given that many colours have blue undertones. Folk Luxe & Vintage Drama - This trend is all about luxury fabrics, jewel-colours, feathers, faux fur and Native American elements. Folk art also plays a huge part in this trend.

The never-ending love affair with vintage apparel and accessories is still apparent and retro designs are still emerging, from cat’seye to round-eyed styles. Clubmaster-inspired frames are a key trend for 2015. Digital Life Theme - This trend is all about clean lines, bright colours, layered acetate plastic and bold shapes. Multi-layered acetate plastic is a really neat way of subtly showing off your style credentials. It keeps the look very smart but gives a flash of fashion inspiration. A lighter colour on the inside of the frame is often used; this allows light to illuminate, rather than darken the eye area. From Dawn to Dusk Theme - An emerging frame trend features all the colours of the sunrise and sunset. Particularly for women, this trend includes pinks, purples, sunset oranges and flaming reds. Specsavers Opticas have a large range of designer glasses including Karl Lagerfeld, Roxy, Quicksilver, Karen Millen, Benetton and Tommy Hilfiger, as well as their own cult brands of Osiris and Aurora. Style advisors are on hand to help make the right choice for each face shape. There are stores located in Benidorm, Guardamar, Calpe, Jávea, and Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca, Fuengirola and Marbella on the Costa del Sol and Santa Ponça in Mallorca. For more information and to find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es.

According to experts at the hospital, 72% of patients with weight problems that undergo bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery), cease to be diabetic. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Monday found the broncos playing at Horadada against The Falcons, the rain caused a tricky bowling surface, but having not played badly came away without a point. But they did have a good morning and enjoyed the experience. On Wednesday the rinks league continued with our second home game in a row in a series of three against Emerald Isle Reds. A great morning for bowls in bright sunshine, albeit with a brisk wind that added to the chill factor. El Rancho came away with the two points winning all three rinks but the ladies of Emerald Isle had a great game making light of the conditions and just lost by two shots. Once again a morning were all players from both clubs thoroughly enjoyed the company of each other in the rinks league and are looking forward to the return match in a couple of weeks. Friday found the Mustangs entertaining Mazarron Miners, who always give us a hard match and are great company. The very stiff and gusty wind soon made it obvious that controlling the woods on a fast surface was going to be very difficult. However we did have fun in good company and some very close rinks, in the end The Mustangs took the rinks by 4 to 2 and the overall shots by a small margin. Maxine Wright, Gary Newson and Rod Wright 11-23. Margaret Odell, Brian Taylor and Ron Odell 16-19. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 14-11. Jim Gracie, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 30-10. June Whitworth, Keith Cunningham and Stew Hamill 16-14. Jane Hamill, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 19-17. LA MANGA BOWLS CLUB By Brian Simon La Manga Crusaders beat Greenland Elms in a hard fought game at La Manga by 10 points to 4. The best winners for La Manga were on the rink comprising of Tudor Gregory, Ully Simon and Peter Wood who beat Jean Thompson, Dave Thompson and Jim Wilcock by 37-3 points. Unfortunately Jim was taken ill during the game and we all wish him well and a speady recovery. Sarah Lowman, Sue Letby and Ann Grace won against Diane Lowton, John O'Brien and Dave Dudding by 26 points to 7. Next came Trevor Dutton, Elizabeth Warwick and Ron Stokes who beat Janet Webb, Florence Edwards and Ted Upham by 16 points to 8. Things then started to get a little trickier for us, to put it mildly, as Shirly Ault, John Grace and Robin Lowman only won on the final end with the last wood bowled against Fred Tilly, Jack Redfearn and Mike Edwards with a result of 16 points to 15. Congratulations go to Eileen Merrick, Marylyn Fryatt and Dave Webb who won against Brian Simon, David Fowkes and Ute Wessendorf by 19 points to 13 and also to Zoe Wilcock, David Fryatt and Sandra Heath who beat Geoff Hollyhead, David Letby and Michael Warwick by 22 points to 9. Highest finish1 5 8 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars), Nick Spicer (Hub Hyenas) There have been two since November the 13th and now there is just one, unbeaten teams that is. Breakaways are the latest team to lose the accolade, surprisingly at home to an ecstatic Tavern Drivers, themselves a little wayward of late but nevertheless congratulations. A depressed Mike Snow tells me there were only one or two highlights from his previously unbeaten side and one of those was the half time curry. That now leaves the Meerkats with just one dropped point against Ray Sanderson´s Porter House outfit, who should have repeated the feat a couple of weeks ago. The top of Division 1 could well change this week when the Meerkats play the Hyenas in a real top of the table clash. A draw may well suit both captains, which will only delay the inevitable last game shoot out at the end of the season, that is should both sides keep their existing records. Already Hyenas captain Simon Williams is bemoaning a loss of key players due to illness etc who I think may well make miraculous recoveries. The banter and rhetoric is in full flow between both protagonists, hopefully the match will live up to expectations. One side now looking nicely settled into league darts are the Evolution boys, their victory visit to the Misfits was their sixth consecutive unbeaten match, to include a cup game, a decent run, if continued, may well see them in the top 3. The Kats match versus the Que Pasa Eagles was a real belter, both sides starting off slowly, the Kats ahead from the third leg, the Eagles eventually showing the sort of form we know they are capable of. Joe Cuyt took the first for the visitors with a tidy 80 out (S20,S20,D20) followed by Dave Frew´s 76 out (S5,T17,D10). The Eagles skipper Den Hall livened his side up in the third with 95 and 121, but it was Pat Abrams taking the plaudits with 2x100 and a showboating 60 out (D20,D10) for the lead. The strong pairing of Abrams and Alex Nikolov had the throw in the first pairs against Jim Waddell and Mel

Bettell, the latter contributing a 95, countered by Nikolov´s 118 and Abrams 140 and D10. Cuyt´s 114 in the next was overshadowed by Lee Maiden´s 180, partner Del Kingsbury slipping in D16 for 4-1. Stuart Clark and Hall reduced their opponents lead in the third pair, Clark nailing D10 before tucking in to some excellent fish and chips. Waddell´s 2x140 in the opening single may well have been enough against a lesser opponent than Abrams, who put away both legs on D20 and D5 after 2x100 and a 125. Maiden ensured the draw beating Cuyt 2-0 with 3x100,D20 and D10, Cuyt replying with just a ton. The 9th leg was pretty lively Nikolov taking the first against Hall on D2 after 2x100. Two more tons from the Bulgarian in the second looked ominous for Hall, but a 95 and D20 set up a decider. Nikolov moved up a gear hitting 3x100, but Hall replied with 85,156 and a 104 out (S18,T18,D16). Brilliant stuff! Clark faced Kingsbury in the next and posted 2x100 and a 74 out for the first leg, Kat Kingsbury replying The Eagles have landed! Jim with a ton. Another 100 from the Kat followed by Storey, Joe Cuyt, Jim Waddell S19,S18,D20 for a 77 out made it all square, Clark finding the lipstick with 100 and 140. Both registered tons in the tion even after this week´s drubbing from second placed Tavern decider and both wobbled just a little, Kingsbury slotting home the Drivers. The league leaders were surprisingly 1-5 down at half time, double for 7-3 and the match. Jim Storey made it 4 for the Eagles, their only win coming from Paul Lear, completing the 701 on a 64 out, winning two of three against Graham Todd 127,95 and D16, Storey Del Lister helping out with some very steady scoring. Three double 1 100,121,D8 and D16. Paul Durrant wrapped up the match 2-0 play- finishes from the Drivers in the first six legs may go some way in explaining the Bears defeat. The first two singles went Drivers way, ing Bettell, the former nailing D20,D5 to include a 140. Justin Hepburn taking the match on D5 after an 83 and 95. Lear Hyenas found themselves 2-0 down in no time playing Playa gained the Bears second leg on D5 only for Ricky Cox D3 and John Flamenca´s Busters. Nick Spicer 100 and D16 taking the third triple. EUROGOLF SOCIETY AT LA MARQUESA On Thursday 22 January 63 members of Eurogolf Society were competing in the monthly Stableford and President´s Trophy competition. HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY by Lubbertus El Valle Golf Resort provided a perfect setting for our second match of 2015, located as it is in pretty desert valley providing its visitors with picture book views of outstanding natural beauty. Not that we had too much time to appreciate this beauty. The weather, though very cold to start the day soon warmed providing perfect conditions on a suburb and ideal course. The perfect conditions led to some exceptional play in the pairs Better Ball completion, which Digger Digby nearly missed when his lift driver, John McGregor took him to Riquelme course by mistake. Luckily for Digger, they arrived at the right course in time for him to play, and finish second. On the day Ken Farrow and Kenrich Rhodes finished 1st on 44 points, Fred Noakes and Digger Digby finished 2nd on 41 points with Steve Dixon and Lin Newberry 3rd with 40 points. Dave Wright

achieved nearest the pin at hole 6, Dave Naylor at hole 9 and Fred Noakes at hole 15. In addition, Pete Hawes and Fred Noakes both achieved Birdies at hole 15. Ken Farrow and Fred Noakes halved one hole with Birdies each. On the day, Fred Noakes played very well indeed, getting his name on the score sheet three times, which is probably a record. Our next match will be at the Roda Golf Course on 3rd February 2015. Don’t be phased by the high scoring members; a warm welcome awaits all comers of whatever level, and all the players really encourage and support newcomers and players however skilled or not. New members, or just those seeking more information about a truly great, warm, friendly and welcoming golf society, should contact Steve Dixon at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig.

LA ZENIA GOLF SOCIETY By Eric Lucas A smaller turn out than normal played at Hacienda del Alamo on Thursday. A very windy day with bright sunlight. The wind did play a major part in the days performances with lower than normal scores being returned. The tee areas and greens were in great shape, some fairways needed a bit of TLC. We played full handicap stableford, there were no N/t/p's, and the usual twos pot . Winner on the day was Bob Watson with 29pts on count back, The raffle was won by John Mackay. Thanks to the staff at Gogarty's for their great hospitality. All future games and dates are now updated on the website, this normally be done by Sunday night

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). GOLF PSYCHOLOGY MADE SIMPLE Golf psychology may appear at times to be complicated and puts people in mind of people in white coats ready to take you away! This is far from the truth and in many cases it just takes people to take another more simplistic view of what they consider to be a problem and that includes some of the worlds best golfers. With this in mind below are a few quotations form the worlds best golfers that bring this way of thinking into focus: “Don't talk the bad shots home with you” - Tony Lema “The impulse to steer, born of anxiety,is accountable for most really bad shots” - Bobby Jones “Looking up is the biggest alibi for bad shots because by the time you look up you've already made the mistake” - Harvey Penick “If you have to remind yourself to concentrate you have no chance to concentrate” - Bobby Nichols “Golf is like a clock start at 6 o'clock, hit it to 12 o'clock and make sure you're in the same time zone” - Chi Chi Rodriguez “Golf is a game where blind devotion will get you nothing but an ulcer” - Tommy Bolt “A lot of guys who have never choked have never been in the position to do so” - Tom Watson “The secret of low scores is the ability to turn three shots into two” Bobby Jones “Golf is like a chain, you always have to work on the weakest link” George Archer “Practice puts brains in your muscles” - Sam Snead We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf. Lo Crispin G.S. at Las Ramblas Why do we do it? Las Ramblas is a difficult course at the best of times but it was made more difficult when we played a team event on Wednesday due to the strong winds. The format for the day was a 2 man scramble and to keep the game moving we used the stableford scoring system. The high wind obviously effected the scoring which was low for this type of event. Results for the day, 1st Jim Preston / John Jones 33 points, 2nd Willie Mackie / George Stewart 30 Points C/B, 3rd Malcolm Morrison / Mike Cutts 30 Points C/B, 4th Steve Harrington / Alan Crain 30 Points C/B Nearest the Pins: Hole 6 Paul Flanaghan, Hole 10 Padraig Obrien, Hole 14 Dave Lewis The free game draw was won by Alan (never win anything) Crain There were 2 x 2’s’recorded John Jones / Jim Preston & Dave Lewis / Stan Earl. Prizes were presented in the Lo Crispin Tavern after the game. Our thanks to David and his team for the after game refreshments. Our next game is at Las Colinas on 4th February 2015.

VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE - PREMIER DIVISION The Vega Baja Premier Golf League held its fourth round of matches at the Las Colinas Golf and Country Club, venue for the European Tour Qualifying school, it was certainly on the cold side but it was clear blue skies, but with slick greens it proved a strong test for the teams. Rockets Golf Society played local team EuroToffs and had their best victory to date coming in with a 3.5 to 0.5 victory with the widest point’s margin of the day. League leaders wanted to increase their lead over the second place team and could only manage a draw with Club 25 Serena but as a result of being seven points better on the overall points took the bonus points, which was not the result they wanted. Paddy’s Point G.S. must have relished the opportunity of taking on the bottom place La Manga Residents who were back to near normal strength with the return of Captain Tony Milne. But Paddy’s Point achieved a win in a low scoring match, but the points were shared so it was 1 bonus point each Las Ramblas G.S. played Altea based Don Cayo who were just a couple of points behind them but captain on the day Barbara Hitchings must be happy with a 2.5 to 1.5 win and taking the bonus points. This was the highest scoring match of the day with 279 points and Don Cayo with the second highest poinst total should be pleased although disappointed at losing. RESULTS: Rockets GS 3.5 (131 pts) EuroToffs GS 0.5 (118 pts) La Manga North GS 2 (136 pts) Club25 Serena GS 2 (129 pts) Paddy’s Point GS 2.5 (117 pts) La Manga RGA 1.5 (117 pts)

Spanglish Golf Society at Vistabella on 21st January 2015. This was the first meeting of the new year for the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 19 players visited the established course at Vistabella taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Upon arrival we were informed that Pablo Riestra had parted company with Vistabella after six years and we wish him well for the future The course was wearing it's winter coat and was in good condition but it was bitterly cold with an icy north west wind and this reflected in the low scores. The winners on the day were as follows: 1st – Mike Probert, 2nd – Brian Burnard, 3rd – Richard Bairstow 4th – Barbara Hitchings

Nearest the Pins – Chris Haw and Bob Hewitson. Best Supporting Act – Joe Valente After the game we returned to the Spanglish bar, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their support. Our next fixture is at La Marquesa on Wednesday 18th February 2015 and visitors and guests are welcome because this is very much a social golfing group rather than a formal golf society. If you are interested in joining the group call Paul Cawte on 966731223 or better still pop into the bar. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY

In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this month’s meeting a group of 18 players visited the established course at Vistabella under the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. For 2015 we have joined forces with the Lo Marabu GS who play their monthly ‘social game’ the same days as us so we both benefit from the cost economies of scale for booking a larger group than would otherwise be the case. The weather forecast was ‘spot on’ with clear blue skies but was chilly to start with but warmed up nicely and the course was presented in an excellent condition. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Dave Bensley– 34 points, 2nd – Mike Probert – 32 points 3rd – Kevin Robinson – 31 points Nearest the pin winners: Par 3 No Winner, Par 4 Ian Noad Par 5 Mike Probert. By Mike Chapman Only a few players braved the early wet and windy conditions on Monday to play a Texas Scramble. The conditions improved as the round progressed and the winners with a score of 62.5 were Rachel Leckey, Hendrick Oldenziel and Brian Dent. On Wednesday we played our usual weekly individual stableford competition with the added bonus that there was a roll-over of the 2's Club pot from the previous week. The round of the day came from Benedicte Kruse with a superb 39 pts to win Category One. The only other player to beat par was Geoff Biggerstaff with 37 pts to win Category Two. The top three in each category were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Benedicte Kruse 39 pts 2nd Terry Field 35 pts 3rd Lindsay Forbes 34 pts Cat 2. 1st Geoff Biggerstaff 37 pts 2nd Terry Cullen 32 pts (c/b) 3rd Rod Doel 32 pts There were four players securing a share of the 2's Club roll-over: Benedicte Kruse, Alan Douglas, Olga Douglas and Liz Robertson. On Friday several of our members were away playing a fixture in the Vega Baja league and the result will be included in next weeks report. The remainder played a best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the par 3's. There were two teams way ahead of the rest each comprising two lady players and our player substitute 'Albert' who on this occasion was awarded 31 pts. The winners were Ulrike Barth, Liz Robertson and Hendrick Oldenziel with a score of 93 pts beating Heinz Lei, Rachel Lecky, and Joyce McClusky with 90 pts.

JEKYLL AND HYDE DISPLAY AS TORRY SLUMP TO DEFEAT CD TORREVIEJA ......0 RIBARROJA CF ........1 The corresponding fixture played between the two clubs on a very hot Wednesday evening last September saw Ribarroja inflict the first defeat of the season on CD Torry, one of only 4 victories the Valencia club has achieved in this campaign, so there was even more determination from the home side that they would reverse the early season upset since when Torry has gone on to push hard for promotion while the visitors have tumbled down the table and now stare into the jaws of relegation. On the club website manager Galiana urged fans to get behind Los Salineros and become the 12th man as the squad attempt to extend their unbeaten run to 7 matches and continue to put pressure on the leaders Castellon entering the final stage of the season. But as they put the home side under pressure from the early stages of this game the Tercera whipping boys looked more like the Grupo 6 high flyers in the opening period as they played neat, intricate football to try and break Torry down and they were justly rewarded as early as the 7th minute. Following a direct run to the edge of the area Solves struck a swerving 25 yard shot which beat Oscars full length dive and settled just inside the corner of the net to put the visitors into a rather surprising lead. The first of Torry’s chances came in the 16th minute, as Adrian’s cross cum shot just eluded the far post of Alfaro in the visitors goal. The midfielder had little support as he surged through the Ribarroja defence. After last week’s sterling effort on the road, Torrevieja struggled to get out of their own half early on as the visitors easily held their own. Without the creativity of Rafa Gomez in midfield the home side had few ideas and were finding it increasingly difficult to unearth that killer pass.

But Cesar probably should have levelled on the half hour. Having beaten the keeper he just dragged the ball a little too far and as his angle became increasingly acute he could only hit his effort into the side netting. A 2nd opportunity came for the visitors just prior to the interval when Faus rounded Oscar in the home goal. As his effort looked odds on to find the back of the net the striker turned in celebration only for Ruben to track back and clear the shot off the line. It was a lifeline that Torry desperately needed. Had they gone further behind at that stage it would probably have been game, set and match to the visitors, but on going in just a goal behind there was still all to play for in the 2nd period. Fifteen minutes later, team talk done, and the introduction of Torry’s two new signings, striker Pinera and midfield player Corella, we saw not one iota of difference. The home side simply couldn’t deal with Ribarroja’s spoiling tactics. The magnificence of recent weeks was nowhere to be seen. Distribution was awful and they were unable to break in numbers so their sporadic attempts at goal were easily snuffed out by an efficient Ribarroja defence. Adrian went close in the 54th minute, dropping his effort onto the top of the cross bar, and Jorge headed over minutes later. And that was about all the home side had to show for their efforts as, despit5e being reduced to 10 men in added time, the visitors cruised to only their 5th win of the season. Next weekend Torrevieja travel to CF Torry Levante where they will be hoping to show that this Ribarroja defeat is nothing more than a blip in their promotion chasing season and looking ahead to Thursday 5th February, CD Torrevieja entertain Norwegian 2nd Division outfit Lorens Tog in a friendly kicking off at the Vicente Garcia at 7.30pm.

TORREGOLF.EU at El Plantio - Friday 23 Jan On a very crisp sunny day and no breeze we had our smallest turn out for many months on the return to our home course El Plantio for the 1st. time in 2015. However it did not stop those attending having a great days golf, in ideal conditions. At least we didn’t have a very early start so it did give our members the chance to get acclimatised to the winter conditions before teeing off for our normal Stableford competition which has to be said showed the difference in scores from one Category to the other with over 7 members in Category 1 shooting over 30 points and only 2 in Category 2. So, The final winners in our 2 Category competition were: Category 1. 1st. Gerry O’Loughlin on count back from Eric Garside both with 38 points. Category 2. 1st. Neil Casey 34 points and 2nd. Roy Middleton with 31. Nearest the pin winners. Holes 7 & 9 Eric Garside Hole 14 Paul Hurrell with no one on hole 18

Our first game of the season was a return to a very much liked course by our Members & Guests at Las Colinas on 20th January. Playing format for this first game of the year, was an Individual Stableford along with a team format of the " best 2 scores". In addition, competing for the New Year Cup 2015 which was won by John Storey. 32 players turned out on an overcast, windy and very cold morning,. Players turning up in several layers of clothing to keep warm and this remained for all of the match as weather conditions did not improve. All players in buggies and the chill factor was enhanced by this! The course in good condition for this time of year and the greens quick. Several players being caught out by the speed on the greens and 3 putts were not uncommon. The buggies are very up to date and fitted with electronic course planners. The downside to this was that you were unable to take the buggies on the Course, nor close to the greens. The computer soon let you know when you "disobeyed", by stopping the cart! It seemed as though you were walking around with 3 clubs in your hands a lot of the time. This was felt to be rather annoying but did not detract from the great day we had. Presentation of the prizes along with the New Year Cup was held at Franc y Louise Bar in Sucina, enjoying Mo's delicious sandwiches. Winners were: 1st Division - John Storey, 2nd Division - Vic Spillard, 3rd Division - John Lester. NTP winners being - Hole 5 Roger Major, Hole 7 Doug Oxlade, Hole 10 Vic Spillard, Hole 14 John Storey and Hole 17 Wayne Harris. Congratulations to all our winners.
