FACEBOOK COPS

Last weekend, The Leader were given a guided tour of the Guardia Civil trafico office in Torrevieja, as we went to find out more about the motivation behind their new information page on Facebook for drivers in Spain. Our guide for the day was Francisco, a serving officer with the traffic department, who is one of the team of five behind the Facebook page. Francisco explained that the page was set up to provide “information on Spanish laws

and driving for the many foreigners who live in the area that they police, which is from Alicante to San Pedro. Whilst saying how it is all too easy to simply fine drivers for traffic violations, Francisco and the team believe that their first role should be about education and awareness, especially as many of the foreign drivers are not aware of the different laws in Spain, and Facebook is not only a great tool for spreading the message, it is also free, apart from the time the officers invest in it. When asked a question that always seemed to crop up amongst foreign drivers as to whether there is an equivalent to the Highway Code. Continued on Page 2

Fransisco explained that there is, although in Spain it is actually four publications, one that deals with vehicles, one for drivers, a third for the practice of driving, and an umbrella publication that covers everything else. It is therefore no wonder that drivers, foreigners in particular, sometimes find it difficult and baffling to keep up with the legislation. Whilst being shown around the station we saw some of the vehicles used for carrying out their duties, including the liveried Alfa Romeo´s, which Francisco explained are high performance models with special equipment such as enhanced braking systems. They have people carriers which are used primarily in the course of accident and incident investigation, and of course the unmarked cars, which we´re not allowed to talk about. In addition, the garage houses numerous motorbikes, which Francisco explains that all trafico officers ride as part of their duties, “If you work in traffic you drive both cars and motorbikes”, he explained. half mast during our visit, which Francisco explained was in honour of Francisco Javier Soria Toledo, a Spanish soldier killed in an attack in Lebanon. Having returned from a peacekeeping mission himself only last year, Francisco explained how the Guardia Civil are posted to areas like Afghanistan, where they serve as military police, part of their duties being accident investigation in such zones, where reports are then sent to the UN for final investigation and conclusion. The arsenal of equipment carried by the officers is ever increasing, from their newly issued high-visibility body armour, compulsory to wear at night after a traffic policeman was killed in France, attacked attending an emergency incident which turned out to be staged, to their electronic equipment that allows them to function whilst mobile. The officers carry a breathalyser and a Personal Digital Assistant, or PDA, which is linked to a thermal printer and capable of searching the police databases for information on people and vehicles. Whilst carrying out a demonstration check during the tour, Francisco explained that one of the benefits of having

transferred a driving license from the UK version to a Spanish one is that the data is all linked to the NIE number, and therefore easier and faster to check. Now, with thousands of people already having liked and followed their page, Francisco explained how it has become extremely difficult to answer all of the questions raised, but he does confirm that all questions and comments are read and the most frequent enquiries are then put back on the page, sometimes by means of a quiz where the reader have the opportunity to guess the right answer, before the actual explanation is given by the officers. We are honoured to be able to collaborate with the Guardia Civil and bring some of the information to your here at The Leader, and thank the officers for taking the time to show us around. Some of those officers behind the page will be appearing on Exite Radio soon too, giving more information, but for now, make sure you like and follow their page on Facebook, just search for N332, named in honour to the main road which goes through the coastline where they work every day. GAS PRICES EXPECTED TO FALL IN APRIL

After months of being fixed at the maximum rate, the Price of a bottle of butane gas is likely to finally decrease, after winter. In view of a fall in wholesale prices, industry experts now predict a fall of 5% in April, which would result in a canister of gas costing 16.60 euro, as opposed to the current price of 17.50. Not only that, if the trend continues, it is expected that the price may well fall by 20% by the time we reach next winter, falling throughout the year to around 15 euro in the summer and then reaching 14 euro at the end of the year. A new bi-monthly review, it was in May of 2013 that the price reached 17.50 euro, the figure set as the ceiling on the price as part of the government’s plans for “liberalization of the sector”. The ceiling meant that increases were absorbed by the company, who can claim back their losses once the wholesale price drops, reviewable on the second Tuesday of the odd months. This is in view of the new quarterly review mechanism that was put in place by the government, hence the reason why the savings take longer to pass to the consumer. There was also a considerable deficit which the government were trying to recover on behalf of the industry, a debt which we, the consumers, had to

stand. In early 2014 the tariff deficit was around 60 million euro, but since the wholesale prices fell in October, we have been continuing to pay the higher price since then, and so by March or April this year the tariff deficit will have reached zero and the Ministry of Industry will be able to revise the final price downwards for us too. The maximum price was frozen at 17.50 until 2016, in order to allow time for more stability, although there was also a built in review for 2015. The potential risk to the consumer now is that because of falling demand in gas, partly due to warmer weather earlier in the winter, although the bitter cold spell may now tip that balance a little, and partly due to an increase in piped gas, and partly due to the fact many people simply can´t afford to buy it at the higher price, the industry are now suffering the loss caused by the reduction in demand and are not likely to take that drop lightly. According to the data from the gas companies, the demand for butane closed 2014 with a fall of 7.5%, or 70,000 tonnes. With the continual fall in wholesale prices expected, the gas industry may well appeal to the government to allow the prices to remain high, as they do not want to be the ones who lose out at our expense.

REPAIRS APPROVED ORIHUELA GRAFFITI ARTISTS FOR ROJALES WINDMILL IN CLEANUP CAMPAIGN Under the supervision of the local police, nine young graffiti vandals between the ages of 17 and 23, were allowed to daub the walls of various buildings in the city, although their task this time was to clean up the mess that they had made. The investigation which led to their identification has been continuing for some time, with officers noting a variety of “tags” used to identify the painter of the murals. In collaboration with a specialist unit in Alicante, where a unit is dedicated to identifying such perpetrators, the team sought to find those responsible for what many consider to be an eyesore blighting the walls of public buildings. Some of the “tags” were already known to the specialist investigators, but the team then set about identifying the others using social network sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, as well as monitoring local activity on the ground with the

help of cameras. After confirming the identity of those involved, the relevant files were opened and the suspects called to testify at the police station. All admitted the facts and expressed their willingness to collaborate in a cleaning program. Therefore, the nine offenders have participated in an educational rehabilitation program, which offers an element of theory, but mostly practical exercises, cleaning the painted areas of the most targeted buildings. The police and the urban cleaning teams have expressed satisfaction in the success of the program, and the positive results from the implementation. Now, with a growing database of identifying factors of the so called street artists, it is hoped that reoffending will not occur, especially as they now face a return to the scene to clean up their mess once more.

RAJOY ON DEFENSIVE The 60-year-old prime minister has been eclipsed in recent opinion polls by Pablo Iglesias, 36, the leader of the newly created anti-austerity party Podemos, while the 42-year-old Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez says Rajoy is out-of-date.

Rojales council has set aside a budget of 4,000 euro for repairs to the historic windmill in the town. The windmill was built in the eighteenth century and is covers three floors, the ground, first and second level, and has suffered damage recently caused mostly by the weather. Now, the company Carpintería Navarro Butrón will commence the repairs over three stages, the first being the repair to the four blades of the windmill, replacing wood that is too badly damaged to save and repairing some of the historic elements, both of which will then be treated to prevent further damage. Although the mechanical elements of the installation are thought to be complete, the possibility of the windmill functioning has been ruled out, but it is hoped that the repair will mean that this historic hilltop landmark will be renewed enough to maintain its position as a beacon of the historic past of the area.

THE WIND OF POLITICAL CHANGE This weekend saw the wind of political change strike a blow to the traditional groups, as the streets were filled with people set to take back the ownership of their country, under the banner “La Marcha del Cambio”, where the relatively new political force for change, Podemos, led their followers with a wave of indignation of the problems caused by years of poor political leads. That change is now filtering down through every level of the political system, right from the very top, and finding firm roots in local politics too. To that end, we caught up with the new leading figure for change in Orihuela, Julio A. Vicente Mateo, who has explained why the next elections are the most important ones for both the country and the local residents alike, and what part he, his group and Podemos aim to play. Will Podemos be contesting both the national and municipal elections in 2015? Yes, we are contesting both national and regional elections as “Podemos” political party, and also the local elections but throughout another juridical form called “Agrupación de Electores” or Association of Electors. This formula, allowed by Electoral Law, is meant to join the different political, social, economical and civil collectives, groups, affiliations and associations together in a citizenship list, formed by individuals proposed by them, voted by every citizen, in order to defend a citizen made political program, compulsive to apply and implement once we take over institutions. Historically, Orihuela has had a strong PP influence. Why do you think it is necessary for a change now? The change will only come if we, each individual, change our vision and actions, and understand that if want to change something, must act different. This is the real change, acting everyday to try to construct and build the society we want and wish. PP local governments were extremely harmful and pernicious, having left a big debt which is in many cases illegitimate. PSOE and LV neither are doing a better job, as little has been done this last legislature, being more of the same. PP and PSOE have demonstrated that they come together and support the

same policies, and they both are responsible of the current situation. So now, more than ever, the change is essential to end this long period of sacking and pillaging public resources by both parties to defend their own interest. What impact do you think that the loss of their majority in 2011 had on the local PP? It was necessary that PP lost its majority last legislature, to end a long period of opaque and corrupt public behaviour and praxis. This last years in the opposition, their only objective was to block any particular request or proposal from other parties, trying to recover local government by revoking motions, using every method they could to reach so, with no victory overall. Residents of the coastal area of Orihuela have considered themselves neglected in the past, with most investments going to the city rather than the coast. How will you change

that opinion if you are successful in your election campaign? I think this opinion reflects the reality in Orihuela Costa, an area that is the main source of municipal income, but it has some structural deficiencies and a lack of public services which has not been solved since many years ago. Population and urbanisation of the Coast have grown enormously the last two decades, with a chaotic town planning that was all but planned, as it was mostly done by promoters who bought a plot, requested a license to build the sector and town hall approved it, without any sense or prevision on a global and integral infrastructure planning for the whole area of the Coast. Only when residents and people from the Coast have the opportunity of participating in the local budget administration, they will be able, by own decision making, to produce the necessary investment of local resources directed to solve their main identified problems. Following Syriza’s win in the Greek elections Spain’s anti-austerity party Podemos hailed the victory with a dig at Germany. “It is the people’s hour,” the party tweeted, while Miguel Urbano, a Podemos leader in Athens to support Syriza said: “We have come to see with our own eyes the change that is starting in Greece but which is happening for the people of the south of Europe.” Another, Pablo Iglesias, said: "We will work to support Syriza but we will also work in Spain, acknowledging that it is a different economic and political reality."

GAY PRIDE King Felipe VI has appeared on the wrap of last week’s Ragap magazine making him the world's first monarch to appear on the cover of a gay mag. The king was featured in a special edition of the publication which was given away at the International Tourism Fair in Madrid. The royal household say that they are aware and approve of his appearance in the magazine.

ISOLATION WARD The government has agreed to set up a high-level isolation ward in the Central Defence Hospital, Madrid, to deal with cases of highly infectious diseases. A spokesperson said the aim is to "strengthen, improve and modernise an already-existing unit to provide the national defence service and the National Health System with highly necessary healthcare resources.

Although Podemos will be contesting the forthcoming Local Elections it will be unde the name ‘Agrupacion de Electores’ Continued From Page 7 What importance do you give to foreign residents and what benefits would there be to a foreign voter choosing Podemos? We give importance to any individual, any person who lives, contributes and share their lives with us in the municipality. Orihuela has many people from a large number of diverse nationalities who are working here, retiring or caring of their families, people who pay their taxes as everyone in the neighbourhood. In consequence they have the right to participate in local policies and decision making, demanding public institutions to render them compulsory public services. Smaller parties such as CLARO and CLR have gained interest in recent years, although they have both been involved in their own battles, do you think it is important for smaller political parties to work together as a coalition? The problem of these parties, as many others, is that pay little attention in general interest, as they are busy defending their own individual interests or those of whom finance them. I do not mean that their voters, militants or sympathisers want or pursue the same, I am confident that great majority have good faith as well as vocation to serve and help others. What do you and your party feel are

the most important changes that have to be made in Orihuela? We think the most important changes are directed to increase transparency and participation in public decision making, allowing all citizens to be able to consult the public accounts, and to decide about what kind of actuation wants to implement in the city. Thus we could avoid corrupted practices done through public administration by people and parties that have a long tradition of opacity and authoritarian practices. In Orihuela we have a main source of revenues from tourism, which is the most important sector after agricultural, so we must boost and strengthen tourism activities, putting in value our monuments, beaches, natural spaces, etc. Some urgent public works must be done as well: Schools in Orihuela Costa, Health Centre of Rabaloche, improve the existents, and put an end to long waiting lists and beds in the corridor, among others. We also have to draw an efficient transport and communication infrastructure planning, which connects the different districts of the municipality, both, physical and virtual. Tell us about your political background? I have had relations with almost all known parties, in one way or another. I have shared ideas with many people from many different origins, countries, movements, collectives, parties, ideologies, political views, theories, from the left to the right, liberal, dogmatic, pragmatic, labour, conservative, etc. There have been countless legal cases involving politic i a n s and corruption, h o w d o e s

any voter know who to trust and why should they trust Podemos? What is plain and clear is that we cannot trust anymore those parties that have corrupted active members, because that corruption is structural and systemic on them. Corruption does not affect one individual or one group; it needs the concurrency and implication of many individuals and groups of people (professionals, civil servers, politics, corporations, etc.). It is so implanted in the traditional political parties’ mechanism and institutions control by them that will not ever regenerate and recover themselves from inside. Podemos have people of different backgrounds, from students to retired people, along with public servers, workers, entrepreneurs, immigrants, educators, public health professionals, unemployed, retailers, disabled, lawyers, volunteers, etc., who never have been in Politics as public representatives. We are the common People, the ones who have worked or are working very hard to get this country going on, who pay taxes with everyday work and income, who carry out activities to make our neighbours and families’ lives easier and comfortable. What I get of all them is that we must be and act together. The common people are decent and honest, only want to have a pacific life with beloved ones with no shocks or traumas, most of them created by those supposed to protect and defend us. So now it is the moment to start involving ourselves in creating the public reality we wish and desire, now is the moment of change. We know how, we want, and we can. ¡Podemos! In view of the wealth of information provided and the detailed answers to the questions, we have had to abridge the interview here. CLARO TO CONTEST MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS WITHOUT PRE-ELECTORAL PACTS At a time when different parties and groups are making decisions about whether and how they will participate in the May, 2015 municipal elections, C.L.A.R.O.’s Executive adopted the following declaration. C.L.A.R.O. will contest the next municipal elections in Orihuela on its own, as an independent party without entering into pre-election alliances or agreements with any other party or group. C.L.A.R.O’S experience in an electoral alliance in 2011 with the Centro Liberal Renovador (CLR) party was disastrous and its experience later of an agreement with the Popular Party of Orihuela was equally disappointing. The CLR-CLARO electoral alliance of 2011 was threatened from the start by the attitude of CLR. Instead of entering the government of Montserrate Guillen immediately after voting for him as Mayor, CLR delayed and were widely believed to be plotting behind the back of the Mayor and those who supported the government he formed in order to bring about its downfall and its replacement by a Popular Party government. After a 3 week delay, CLR entered the government. In the following months, they sought systematically to reduce the competences, resources and budget of the C.L.A.R.O. Councillor for the Coast. In November, 2011, four months after entering into the government, Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas took the lead in expelling Bob Houliston from the CLR-CLARO municipal group, again in order to reduce his rights as a councillor. To justify the expulsion, they claimed falsely, without any basis in fact, only the assertions of Modesto Veloso, who had already resigned from C.L.A.R.O. after failing to disrupt the Executive Committee of the party, that C.L.A.R.O. was negotiating with the Popular Party to bring down the government. Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas insist on using the description “CLR-CLARO” although they have both been expelled from the Electoral Coalition CLR-CLARO and politically, the Coalition is completely broken and has been since 2011. However, legally it remains valid in a limited number of areas (principally the joint CLR-CLARO electoral list, as can be seen since the resignation as a councillor of Asuncion Mayoral) until 31 March, 2015 the day the

May, 2015 municipal elections are officially declared. Bob Houliston, the leader of CLARO, says that followTherefore on 31 March it will ing the next elections, his party is likely to be the only legally and definitively expire. one that will truly represent the Orihuela Costa RIP. No doubt until then CLR will continue to use the description CLR-CLARO for whatever political advantages they mistakenly think it gives them. This experience and the lies which have been perpetrated by CLR regarding C.L.A.R.O.’s political record have convinced the party that C.L.A.R.O. must fight the forthcoming election entirely on its own without any pre-election alliance or agreement with any other party or group. C.L.A.R.O. is a local party born of the need to correct injustices and unfairness in the government of Orihuela Costa. We are a democratically run party without political ideology. The first initials of our name stand for Closeness to the People and Honesty. Our task in Orihuela Costa has been to create, in a diverse, multi-national population, a political consciousness and citizens affected by its decisions. This will require transparency and determination to participate in local government. We believe in inte- openness. In response to the many people worried by the present gration and have never supported separation from Orihuela. We fragmented and uncertain political situation in Orihuela, C.L.A.R.O. believe that the municipality of Orihuela with its great geographic dis- will offer to the voters in May the promise that we will work for persion and its diverse population should be governed on a decentral- change, fairness and efficiency on behalf of all those living in the ized basis with government being conducted as close as possible to the municipality.

AGAINST HUMAN RIGHTS Sirs, I have written to the government department you published last week. Not only did I say that I objected to the stopping of the allowance, that I worked all my life and still pay tax in the UK. I also mentioned that it is against our Human Rights to stop the allowance. Whether this will help or not I don't know, but I hope so, if gypsies in the UK can now camp on the green belt, because they played the Human Card why can't we. Regards Chris Martin. (by Email)

ILLEGAL RENTERS COULD FACE PROSECUTION I have just read the above article in your 26 January issue. Please could you confirm something for me. In the article you say "He said that the measures will be implemented from next spring, the season from which fraud

within the tourist apartment ector tends to intensify". Could you confirm, does this new decree come into effect Spring 2015 - or as I believe your article reads, spring 2016? Does prosecution start from Spring 2016 and not before if you have not registered your holiday rental property? Look forward to hearing from you. Barbara Green Editor: To my knowledge the law is still being formulated after which it has to be approved by the regional government so it would seem that introduction in spring 2016 would be more likely. Do be aware however that such ‘warnings’ have been made on many previous occasions without implementation.

ADVER TISING BILLBOARDS I refer to your article in this week's edition of The Leader entitled ' The Eyesore of Advertising Billboards' As a permanent resident of

Orihuela Costa since 2003, I fear you have not gone nearly far enough in terms of exploring and exposing the growing blight on our community. We have a council that seems more inclined to fight each other like ferrets in a sack rather than conduct a determined, coordinated and constructive development of the entire area of the coast. The council should demonstrate a philosophy of setting the underlying example of what the citizens should expect of their community and how we as citizens should respond in maintaining these expected standards. What do we really have? A group of Councillors who often appear to be pursuing their own agenda against each other rather than working together on behalf of the community at large. Seemingly unfettered building development without regard to the necessary accompanying infrastructure requirements. Dirty weed-strewn streets Builders rubbish and fly- tipping is widespread. Garden rubbish collection is intermittent and inconsistent.

Dog mess is everywhere Billboards sprouting everywhere. A lack of decent cultural and sporting venues. If the reason is lack of money, but I doubt that it really is, then the Council should embark on a positive campaign to encourage people to sign on the Padron. Additionally, you and your colleagues in the Press should be much more hard-hitting. Our Council deserves a hard time and you should be at the forefront of providing it. Regards David Stewart

WFA - RESPONSE FROM KEITH SIMPSON MP To: ericberg2@hotmail.com Subj: Winter Fuel Allowance Thank you for contacting me about the changes to Winter Fuel Payment. As you are aware, Ministers have announced that from winter 2015/16 Winter Fuel Payments will no longer be payable to individuals in EEA countries which

have an average winter temperature higher than the UK. This change will mean Winter Fuel Payments will no longer be payable in Portugal, Spain, Greece, France, Gibraltar, Malta, and Cyprus. I can pass on that the Government has worked with the Met Office to develop as robust a methodology as possible, and to analyse comparable winter temperature data across all EEA countries. This change will save around £30 million a year, broadly offsetting the cost of a recent European court judgment which stated that the Government must pay Winter Fuel Payment to EEA citizens who have a "genuine and sufficient link" with the UK. I do believe that this is an important change, which will re-focus the benefit on its original purpose and avoid a situation where the Government will be paying 115,000 people in warmer countries a Winter Fuel Payment by 2015. I hope this is information provides some reassurance. Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

Yours sincerely, Keith Simpson MP

ERIC BERG REPLY TO KEITH SIMPSON MP Dear Mr Simpson, Your reply beggars belief! I am well aware of what Ministers are going to do in 2015/16 and you have done nothing to reply to the reasons as to why every peniosner here in Spain thinks it is a ludicrous decision. Can you please answer the following questions: 1) Has any Minister lived in a house in Spain in the winter? 2) Are houses in the UK insulated to keep heat in? 3) Are houses in Spain insulated to keep heat in? I am sorry to have to labor the point, but it appears to me that you have not taken the time to read my email I look forward to hearing from you in due course Regards, Eric Berg

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Barbecue or What? It is often said that we go around with our eyes closed, and it seems that I am no exception. It is also certainly true that it sometimes takes showing visitors around the area where we live before we truly appreciate and understand what we have close by. Walking our dog, Bella, recently with a good friend who was visiting the island led us to an area where we have walked many times by the sea before. In the distance was what I always thought to be a barbecue area, mainly because of the barbecue shaped concrete object in the distance, complete with chimney, that I have seen so many times before in official picnic and barbecue areas in Spain. Sadly, I had never bothered to investigate further. It was only when our friend commented that what I had previously thought was a barbecue is, in fact, a ‘Trig Point’. I was vaguely aware of these objects, correctly named as triangulation points in the UK, but was not aware of seeing one in the Canary Islands, and I certainly did not expect to find one so close to home. In the UK, these trig points are concrete pillars used by the Ordnance Survey to discover the exact shape of the country. They are usually to be found at high levels of

ground to allow for a direct line of sight from one trig point to the next. The top of the pillar is designed to allow for a theodolite (a kind of protractor built into a telescope) to be sited so that an accurate angle may be measured – a process called ‘triangulation’. The Ordnance Survey maps that are still lovingly used in the UK today were the result of a project that began in 1935, to accurately map out the shape of the country. The series of coordinates displayed is known as the ‘National Grid’. The process appears to have been one of dedication and immense skill, since they claim an accuracy of just 3mm across the entire length of the country. Aerial photography, digital mapping and GPS measurements have largely superseded this process and, sadly, some of these trig points are disappearing or have fallen into disrepair. The UK was not the only country to use this system of mapping, and many examples can be found in countries across the world. In Spain, there are over 11,000 triangulation stations erected by the Instituto Geographico Nacional (http://www.ign.es). These are usually made up of a cylinder, some 120 cm high and 30 cm diameter on a concrete base. The trig point close to our home in Gran Canaria is of similar design, and was erected in July 1991. Whilst it could do with a bit of a makeover, it is reassuring to know that it is part of a nationwide network and that our islands were not forgotten. I will now be much more alert to find other trig points on Gran

Canaria, as well as the other islands that we visit. The history and use of triangulation points is an interesting subject and I was delighted to discover that it was not just another barbecue. INDIAN DRUGS WITHDRA WN FOR TESTING IRREGULARITIES At the request of the European Medicines Agency, the Spanish Ministry of Health has suspended the sale of 29 generic medicinal drugs after finding that the company who provide them have been using unauthorised practices prior to them being approved for sale. However, the Ministry has stressed that there is no evidence of any risk to patients taking the medication as the chemical compound is exactly the same as those drugs which are approved, and that treatment should continue as normal for those who are in possession of the drugs. An audit of over 1,000 presentations of generic drugs was carried out by the health department, resulting in the withdrawal of the 29 different drugs manufactured by the GVK Biosciences company in Hyderabad, India, where evidence of a breach of the rules of Good Clinical Practice in bioequivalence studies were found. The drugs in question are a range of antihistamines such as 'Ebastina' or 'Desloratadina', antihypertensive 'Valsartán / hidroclorotiazida' or 'Irbesartán / hidroclorotiazida', the antidepressant

'Escitalopram', antidiabetic 'Repaglinida' and Alzheimer´s treatment 'Donepezilo', amongst others. Once again though, it is stressed that there is no evidence that the drugs are harmful and patients should continue treatment, the action is as a sanction towards the company and is not for the protection of the public.

ALCOHOL DOES NOT HELP YOU SLEEP The results of a study to be published in February´s online edition of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, reveals that consuming alcohol before going to bed can result in sleeping disorders and problems. The authors of the study say that “People tend to focus on alcohol and its commonly known sedative properties, which is reflected in shorter times to sleep, especially in adults, rather than sleep disruption that occurs later in the night”, said Christian L. Nicholas, expert in sleep research at the University of Meloburne, Australia. In people who drink before bedtime, alcohol initially acts as a sedative, marked by the activity of the delta frequency in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of SWS, but later is associated with sleep disruption. Also, significant decreases in the activity of the delta frequency and power with normal development between the ages of 12 and 16 are produced. The study involved 24 participants (12 women and 12 men) all healthy and aged between 18 and 21 years of age. They were social drinkers who consumed less than seven standard drinks per week for the past 30 days. Each individual

23

underwent two situations: alcohol intake before bed as well as a placebo, followed by standard polysomnography with integrated EEG recordings. The results showed that if sleep is regularly interrupted by alcohol before bedtime, especially for long periods of time, this could have significant negative effects on welfare during the day and neurocognitive function such as processes of learning and memory. Alcohol does not help you sleep, according to Nicholas, “The main message is that alcohol is not really good for sleeping even though it may seem that helps you fall asleep faster. In fact, the quality of sleep you get is significantly altered and disturbed,” he concludes.

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Our Saba Pearls Squad were away to Greenlands this week, and the result was well in our favour with a 10-2 win, putting us on equal points at the top but second on goal difference. Our Diamonds squad are still pushing hard and are currently in 4th position in the Voyager league, having had a tough game away in the very windy conditions at Vistabella only taking 2 points. On Tuesday our Premier 20 teams advanced to the final of this Knock Out tournament with a great win over La Marina, winning all the rinks at home and taking two wins and a draw away. We now await the winners of Monte Mar v San Luis. Wednesday our Winter League squad braved the terrible conditions away at Vistabella and despite the weather making it almost unplayable, our squad came away with creditable 8 points. Our Berleen team are still maintaining their top spot, despite a last end defeat. Our Panthers Fed 4s team were away to Emerald Isle Leprechauns; again, facing very windy conditions we managed to take all the 8 points to maintain our top spot in the League. Well done to skip Jacqui Johnston, with two of our teams having won their games, all was on her last bowl to make a remarkable shot and give her team 3 shots to win the match overall. The Bowls Club now offer open bowling on Tuesday afternoons 1.30 p.m. for 2.00 p.m. where your host will be Jack Burrell and prizes are on offer. Members and non members are welcome. Bowls are available to hire. For people who would like to get into the game of bowls, our club offers a new bowlers coaching programme. For more information about our club, please contact Joe Riley on 96 572 5787 or e mail joediriley@gmail.com.

Next up were the Clarets who were at San Miguel on Thursday, 5 February to play the Choctaws in a Federated Fours match. VICTORY FOR SPAIN AT MIRAFLORES

Ten men & ten ladies representing the Spanish National squad, from mainly Alicante and Almeria provinces, made the trip to Miraflores bowls club to play a match against the Malaga provincial team, under the auspices of the Spanish & Andalucian Bowling Federations. The result was an exhibition of excellent bowling and warm friendship between the two teams. Despite an excellent performance from Malaga in both men’s & ladies categories, the Spanish Team finished victorious. The men’s match was so close the result hung on the last bowl of the last end.

After two days of spectacular competition, the event was topped off with a very convivial gala dinner at the Gran Hotel, Cala de Mijas, where the visitors had been accommodated. Speech by speech confirmed the success of the event and the need to repeat on an annual basis. Well done the two teams, the many spectators, the sponsor, Barry Dare of Avalon Funeral Plans, Craig & Sandra Lewis and members of the Miraflores club who worked so hard to make the occasion such a great spectacle. Submitted by Jennie Aldridge & John Carr.

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB

By Bobbie Sims LA MARINA PATHFINDERS Looks like a hard game for us this week, away this time to Montemar Matadors just scoring 1 point for the draw with Ann Stone, Berni Carr and Jim Freeman with 17 shots, the away points were 13 and the overall shot difference was 84-124. LA MARINA ASTRONAUTS This week we travelled all the way to Country Bowls, and they gave us a hard game, points were 3-11 and shot difference was 81-111, well done Brenda Brain, Angie Butler and John Rae for keeping then to a draw 14-14 and our win was Paul Tregoing, George Furzer and Ted Winters with shots of 21-12. LA MARINA EXPLORERS A nice result for the Explorers this time, our points were 11, and 3 to San Luis Trekkers, we gained the overall points with shots of 107-75, a good all round game from everyone, but our top winning team with shots of 32-9 were Roger Stacy, Peter Parsons and Alex Whyte. PREMIER 20 semi final After some amazing games against good teams that got us to this point, everyone involved in the home and away games on Tuesday against Quesada gave their best,we played as a team, and the result was disappointing, but well done La Marina. LA MARINA SEAGULLS WOW 14 points to nil at home against La Manga Crusaders, well done everybody fantastic shot difference of 126-71. Too many great games to mention all but there were 2 teams with the same shot difference, Pam Morgan, Arthur Cronkite and Richard Robinson 2915, and Steve Douglas, Steve Hindle and Len Daniels 21-7. LA MARINA DOLPHINS Today we were up against San Luis Tigers at home, points were 6-8 and shot difference was 97-107 top team was Martin Butler Cliff Rawlinson andBrian Duff 23-17. LA MARINA SHARKS We were up against San Luis Lions again this week, our points were 8 to La Marina and 6 to the Lionsand shots came to us with 110-101. Top of our 3 winning teams were Any Bartlett , Barry Sadler and Dave Lewis 21-5.

By Paul Thomas SABA LEAGUE Pulsars played at home to San Luis Klingons only managing to win on 1 rink and draw on 1 Points for 3 points against 11 shots for 85 shots against 10. Meteors played away to Emerald Isle to face the Titans tough games on all Rinks, but the Meteors played hard and came away with all 14 points. Excellent. Winter league played at home to Monte Mar who "blew" in with harsh winds. Unfortunately, Monte Mar seemed to manage the Weather conditions better than San Miguel points for 2 points against 10. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB

Our week started with The Broncos playing host to San Miguel Comets, playing well for a well deserved win by 4 rinks to 1, with the other drawn and the overall shots by a reasonable margin, always a good result against any San Miguel team. Helga Schiffman, Mick Ager and John Featherstone 14-20. Margaret Odell, Ron Edwards and Shirley Edwards 21-13. Marion Haynes, Rob Clark and John Newell 21-15. Tony Robinson, Graham Day and John Donovan 15-15. John Cleal, David Haynes and John Skipper 30-8. Edward Elsam, Tricia Elsam and Malc Elmore 18-10. On Wednesday, in what appeared to be gale force 10 winds the rinks Raiders travelled to Emerald Isle, however, rather than get blown away they managed to win on two of the rinks and of course the obligatory draw for Stewart on the other. With a shots of 25 for El Rancho and 21 to Emerald Isle, in a game of reduced ends. Everybody having had enough of the cold, we all retired to the bar after 10 ends and enjoyed each others company with a coffee and a brandy. Thursday afternoon found El Rancho playing host to The British Legion, on yet another very windy day. The wind on a fast mat made it a bit of a lottery and despite reducing the number of ends; we had a good time in good company, with El Rancho taking the rinks 4 to 2. Our league match on Friday was at home to Greenlands Elms, with a slightly weaker though equally difficult wind, we were however treated to laughs as well as consternation, with all looking forward to the wind dropping over the next few days. The Mustangs took the rinks by 4 to 1 with one drawn, though to be fair with several close rinks, the result could easily have gone the other way. Jane Hamill, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 20-18. Richard Needham, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 28-7. Barbara Jones, Ron Odell and Geoff Jones 16-17. June Whitworth, Keith Cunningham and Stew Hamill 14-14. Maxine Wright, Gary Newson and Rod Wright 16-15. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 22-18. EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON RESULTS 5TH FEBRUARY K.O. CUP RESULTS Hub Meerkats 7-1 Junction Jackals Gogarty´S Bulls 1-7 Hub Hyenas KO HANDICAP PLATE RESULTS Que Pasa Eagles 3-7 The Porter House Pint Depot Kings 7-2 Evolution The Leader newspaper endured production problems last week as their printers succumbed to adverse weather conditions and were unable to print the publication. Many readers went online to view the column but for those who didn’t the top of the table clash (Kats v. Hyenas) features later in this item. Meerkats reached their sixth consecutive KO Cup final by overcoming a vociferous Junction Jackals led by the young Keith King. It wasn’t a great semi by any means. The first three triples went to the Kats trio of Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov and Paul Durrant, their opponents Phil de Lacy, Keith King and Nigel Elbery, not finding the T20 anywhere near enough to contain the Kats. Highlights of the first three legs were de Lacy´s 125 and Abrams 62 out, T10,D16. All change for the next three legs, Del Kingsbury opting for himself, Lee Maiden and Graham Todd, Andy Gildea already rueing his captain´s responsibilities going for Alex Giles, Jimmy Gray and Mike Jones. Todd took the first for 4-0, Kingsbury making it 5 before Jones posted the Jackals first double of the tie at the break. It looked ominous for Gildea´s side as tons pounded in from Nikolov and Abrams, Maiden completing the sixth, de Lacy the only Jackal offering opposition with a ton. Nikolov D8 completed the match for a 7-1 score line at the excellent Que Pasa venue. Pint Depot Kings faced Evolution at the Hub Sports bar, both anticipating a place in the Plate final, Kings already recipients of last term´s League Plate award. Evolution had a one leg advantage in the Plate but the Kings trio of Matt Cummins, Ian Sleath and Robbie Hogden quickly turned the score line round to their advantage via Sleath D6 and Hogden D11, John Williams levelling for Evolution on D20. John Crooks D2 made it 3-2 for the Kings, Martyn Bynorth increasing the deficit to 2 on D9. A nice 71 out from Crooks on D14 made it 5 for the Kings and a real uphill task for Evolution. Cummins busted 79 in the next, but Evolution couldn’t capitalise leaving Hogden the chance to complete the 701 on D4. The ninth leg was to be the last, the Kings facing a strong Evolution trio of Williams, Jak Doggatt and Jon Peters

up against Cummins, Hogden and Sleath. It was the ever reliable Cummins who sealed the fate of the opposition on D7 for victory and also came out on top in the scoring department, nailing 120 and 3x100; Sleath 100 and Hogden 120 supporting. Peters and Williams were the only Evolution ton scorers.

LEADER By Paul Durrant

Captain’s Simon Williams and Derek Kingsbury prior to their top of the table clash.

Porter House will meet the Kings in the knock out Plate final after an impressive victory at the Junction playing Que Pasa Eagles, themselves no slouches. Peter Ayres was impressive in the first triple, nailing 125 and 100, Matt Jackson going out on D4. Ayres added a further ton in the second, Eagle Stuart Clark countering with 121 and 140, but to no avail as Ayres added D2 to his repertoire. Clark upped a gear in the third hitting 100,100,111, team mate Joe Cuyt hitting a ton to set up Clark to slip in D2 for 2-1. Kevin Wood did most of the work in the fourth with a fine 123 and 73 out (S13,S20,D20) against Brian Nash, Yvonne Rouffignac and Ray Sanderson. Nash 125 and Sanderson 120 plus D13 increased the lead for the Porters. Wood scored yet another ton in the sixth, Rouffignac repeating the feat for Porters but Den Hall pegged out on D10 for 3 apiece, the match now nicely poised. A 140 from Jim Waddell gave Eagles the edge after the break, but former comedian Ayres really raised the tempo with 2x100 and a 78 out (S18,S20,D20) for a narrow lead. Wood somehow busted 139 in the eighth, Hayes D10 taking full advantage of the slip. Clark added a further ton in the ninth but so did Ayres, allowing Jackson to finish on D20. No tons in the tenth apart from a magnificent 127 out but from who else but Ayres (T19,T10,D20). Great performance from the old chap, 6 tons a 78 and 127 out, how the Porters missed Ayres over the Christmas period. Both finals will be played on April 23rd at yet to be decided neutral venues.

LAST WEEK´S TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH A stunning 49 tons plus a multitude Evolution All Stars L/R Jak Doggatt, Tyron Nash, of 80 pluses were recorded in last Gordon Adams, John Williams, Jon Peters week´s top of the table clash between the Hyenas and Meerkats, in a jam packed Hub Sports Bar. 29 of the tons went to the Kats who gave their best performance of the season so far. The Hyenas´ ton tally would have toppled any other side, such was the standard of play. Captain Simon Williams had no problem motivating his side, but they were slow out of the blocks in the first three triples and paid the price by being 3-0 down to doubles from Pat Abrams D10, Dave Frew D2 and Abrams D10 in the third. Most of the damage coming from Paul Durrant 125,125,116 plus a 140 from Abrams. Hyenas response a ton from John Eyre and two more from Nick Spicer. The same two were chosen by Williams for the first pairs against Abrams

and Alex Nikolov, Spicer recorded 100,100,123, Nikolov 2x100, but the all important double went to Abrams on D13. Shaun Smith figured next with the captain, Smith recently laid low with an ear infection gave a good account of himself with 100 and 140 equalled by Frew and Del Kingsbury, the latter finding the crucial double D20. Lee Maiden got himself on the score board with a ton and D20 partnering Durrant in their game with both Joe´s, Hawkins and Miller. 06 at half time, absolutely unbelievable and at least a draw for the league leaders, keeping the Hyenas at least a point behind and the Kats unbeaten record intact. Williams response was emphatic, Spicer to go first against Graham Todd. The Meerkat gave their top man a real fright, scoring 95,117,121 and 133 plus taking the second of three legs. Spicer´s response 2x100, 140 and both doubles for the Hyenas´ first leg of the evening. Smith was selected next and yet again it was a three leg thriller, in fact 5 of the 6 singles went all 3 legs. Smith´s opponent Frew 100,121 took the first in 18 darts and added 100,140 in the two remaining legs only for the talented Smith to take out D8,D5 plus 2x100. The noise level increased as the hosts sensed the draw was a possibility with 4 strong players remaining. Miller was next and opened with 100 and 109 v. Abrams who couldn’t find a treble, but managed D10 for the first. Miller took the second with 140 and D10, Abrams having the darts in the decider. The Meerkat stepped up a gear and recorded 100,137 and then D9 for the game match and both points. Miller 100 in the decider was very unlucky in what was a great tussel. Eyre enjoyed the throw against Durrant in the 9th leg and posted a 140 and D20, his opponent 100 and 95. A 99 and 2x100 from the Meerkat plus the double made it all square. Eyre couldn’t take advantage of throw in the third as Durrant nailed 2x100 and D20 for the game. The fifth single went all the way as Hawkins took the first on D16 and slipped in a ton in the second against Nikolov who matched the ton but nailed 85 with T15 and D20. That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the useful Hawkins who failed to hit any big scores as the Bulgarian made it 2-1 with 100 and 139. Maiden concluded the match with the only 2-0 against a spirited Geoff Harvey performance, on D2 plus 99,100 and 121. Quality match well hosted by Simon Williams and his Hyenas. Finishing School 119 required: If you throw for T20 and hit S20 you cannot finish in two. Throw instead for T19 as a miss leaving 100 points means you can still finish. Question: How do you finish 65?

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY AT LAS COLINAS 4TH FEBRUARY The day started with early morning rain but as we arrived at the course blue skies broke through the cloud and we looked forward to a dry game of golf on the well prepared Las Colinas course. We didn’t however expect the 60kph winds which followed with balls flying always but the right way and

balls unable to stay still on the greens. Padraig Obrien nearly lost his clubs and trolley on the third fairway which were saved from the water by a fast acting Dave Rochester, although Tim Coopers head covers did get wet. After just a few holes it was decided to abandon the game and all members returned to the clubhouse. Las Colinas staff totally understood our concerns and offered the society a free return visit latter in the year. Members returned to the Tavern for a refreshing drink and told tales of the day.

A competitive final saw Rachel and Andrew staging a comeback from 5-2 before losing 6-4 to the winners, Helen and Rafa. After the fun, sociable and competitive tennis the players enjoyed a drink and some also had something to eat on the hotel terrace, with beautiful views down to la Manga. The tournament coincided with the annual meal for the weekly, Thursday and Monday coaching and social play tennis groups. So in the evening those players involved enjoyed a night out at a local

restaurant. After an excellent meal the medal for the highest scoring Thursday club session player was awarded, congratulations to Christine Reed on her 2nd year in a row. Tournament organizer, Steve Durie, would like to thank regular players and those who visit, for supporting the tournaments and weekly tennis sessions held at Campoamor. 8 BALL LEISURE QUESADA POOL LEAGUE Week 18 results from Wednesday 4th February have now been published and this brings us exactly half way through the league season and yet another week of unusual results. Green Baize Amigos have stretched their lead at the top of the division with Bar Pepito having a bye this week and Shenanigans Shakers losing 4-5 to Mr Sniffs, in what was a great result for them, although the bonus point for the Shakers takes them above Bar Pepito on frame difference. Green Baize Amigos had a very narrow win away to the Booking Pub which went down to the deciding frame and a comment from the GBA captain was that they were pushed all the way, so well done to Booking Pub ! Bottom of the table Coopers Arms had only their second win of the season against Monos A who were previously in fifth place so a great 6-3 win for them. Monos B are also having a good run of results at the moment, winning 8-1 on the night. The final game was a comfortable 7-2 win at home for Green Baize Minis. QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE Font Del Llop 2nd February 2015 Match 4. This month we were on the picturesque course of Font del Llop. This was our first match of 2015. Much was at stake, Mini Golf needed to win all of their games to set a target, being a very thin one, to beat San Miguel A. Final analysis shows that Mini Golf and San Miguel A are now 35 points apiece but unfortunately Mini Golf have played all of their games. So it leaves Sportsman to whitewash San Miguel A in the last match of the season next month to stop them winning the League again this year. Some of us smile but it will be a serious game. We were set for a 10.30 start on both the 1st and 10th and having sorted the buggies out everybody proceeded to make their way to their respective tees. Upon arriving at our tee we thought that instead of coming by car to the course we had been removed to outer Mongolia. I have played at Font del Llop many times, even with ice on the paths, but I have never known the course to be so cold. Many of the players found it difficult at first to keep hold of their clubs. Nevertheless as the day wore on the sun poked its nose out and we began to warm up and some interesting results came in. This month

instead of going back to one of the Clubhouses, we stayed at Font del Llop for the par 3 presentations. We thank Font del Llop for the excellent work on the course in making it in such good condition. Dates for the diary: Next season will commence in October 2015, after the interleague challenge match with the VBPGL. We are still looking for new societies to enter the league all will be welcome. Summer Cup Competition on Monday 29th June open to all societies in the Costa Blanca South region and golfers with an existing handicap. For more information email quesadagolfleague@hotmail.com. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Ladies Golf In Spain I have lived in Spain for 11 years and have seen numerous resident lady golfers playing early morning or late afternoon golf with their partner or spouse but on society days you would be very lucky to see 5% of the players to be lady golfers. Now I know that society golf could be seen by some to be an essentially male domain but I have seen lady golfers readily accepted into the societies with whom I have been associated. Early this week I had an interesting conversation with Pia Koivuranta from Finland who is a former European ladies tour professional and PGA level 5 qualified coach on this subject and she believes that there should be an opportunity for ladies to have a tournament or a society of their own and with this in mind she is arranging a ladies tournament at Vistabella on Saturday 21st March 2015. The tournament will be 22 hole stableford event with a shotgun start at 9.30am and the day will include breakfast, snack on course, lunch and trophies and prizes for the winners including nearest the pins, straightest and longest drive and there will be a Wilson demo day on the driving range and all of this for only €55. If you are interested in playing in this event or perhaps playing on a regular basis in a ladies golf society then contact Pia directly on piakoivuranta@icloud.com or call on 686 359 673. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. LA SIESTA GOLF SOCIETY 25TH ANNIVERSARY FEBRUARY 2015 Last month marked the 25th Anniversary of our close association with Real Club de Golf Campoamor, the course and the management, which we have enjoyed immensely. To celebrate the occasion our President, Bernie Sturt, presented the owner, Agustin Perez Espinosa and his wife Elodia Mazon Andreu, with a plaque and a bouquet of flowers. Bernie made mention of the support we have received from everyone at Campoamor in our charity work, and the friendship of all of the staff. The facilities made available to us over the years have been excellent. Senor Espinosa in turn thanked us all for our loyalty and friendship over the last 25 years and hoped the relationship will continue for many years to come. Our photo is of our members making the presentation outside the Sports Centre.

EUROGOLF SOCIETY - LA MARQUESA

On another very windy day 52 members of the Eurogolf Society took part in a Stableford Greensomes Pairs competition, at La Marquesa on Thursday 5 February. The format for this game is that both players tee off, select a ball to continue to hole out, with alternate shots. Battling against the wind and with partners hitting shots in to tricky positions we were not expecting high scores. However, the winning pair of Robin Richards and Phyllis Venables proved us wrong, coming in with a magnificent score of 49 points. In second place the pairing of Ian Stewart and Alec Relph with a score of 41 points Third the pair of Brian Heard and Gill Gordon 41 points. Nearest the pins were 5th Marilyn Eckersall 11th Colin Daye-Gretton 15th Robin Richards 17th Hennie Baken Football drawer winners: Ray Porter, Alan Caithness, Bev Evans, Debbie Weedon Fewer numbers turned out for the regular weekly Toff’s Stableford

By Lubbertus On Tuesday 3rd February we held an Individual Stapleford match at the wonderful Roda Golf Course. The awful winds of the last few days relented leaving just a slight breeze. The famous rolling fairways, amazing landscaping, lakes and long fairways offered wonderful conditions for the day. The course and day proved ideal; Kedrick Rhodes and Robin Hanna finishing in first place with Fred Noakes and Kevin Farrow second and Simon Sharples third. Nearest the Pin at hole 2 was Dave Naylor with Fred Noakes nearest at holes 7 and 11. Steve Naisy was nearest the pin at hole 13 with a truly amazing shot. The ball hit the rocks round the water, bounced high into the air and settled inches from the hole. Steve, of course, claims this had been his plan for that hole all along. The real excitement on the day however was off course before the match, and again involved Digger Digby and John McGregor. It started when Digger put petrol into Joe’s diesel car by mistake. Joe “retaliated” by then taking Digger to the wrong course, just as he did last week; one thing you can say is that at least Joe is consistent. Finally, Digger “retaliated” with a fantastic long drive, the longest of the day. As you can see, the Happy Days Golf Society isn’t just about competitive golf. It’s also a society aiming to enjoy the game, the day and each other’s company. There is always a warm welcome to all comers, of whatever level. Steve at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig welcomes all players wanting more info about this great society.

CLASSY VILLARREAL OUTDO WEAKENED TORRY CD TORREVIEJA .........0 VILLARREAL FC ‘C’ ....2 Not for the first time this season, Torry competed so well in the first half, then faded dramatically for the remainder of the match. This reversal against Villarreal's 3rd string side, means it's now 3 defeats on the bounce, and 3 without scoring. But in mitigation, the missing from action list is growing! New signing Obele's return to the fold has been delayed by international clearance, plus fellow strikers Pinera and Rafa Gomez were out injured. Add to them Alexis, Eddy, Sergio, Ferran and Martin, all casualties, and it's clear why manager Galiana has such a huge selection headache. In fact, he had to include youth players Costa, Gonzalo, Chamit and reserve keeper Jamie, on the bench. Back in September, Torry just about edged a narrow victory in Villarreal, but this time around a repeat was never really on the cards. It started so brightly for the hosts, when after 20 mins, Brani found himself in a great goal scoring position, but the alert visiting keeper Quique closed him down, panicking him into shooting over. Up the other end, Alexi should have opened his account, but his scuffed shot past the post, left Torry keeper Oscar a relieved man. Chances were arriving thick and fast, in this end to end half, and the

pick of the bunch was Vi c e n t e ' s swerving 25 yard drive, w h i c h Quique acrobatically tipped over the bar. Villarreal struck back, this time it was Cristian who shot narrowly wide with Oscar well beaten. A Ruben assist found Corella, whose accurate powerful drive was again brilliantly dealt with by the impressive Quique, thus keeping his side in the game. Torry were playing with such confidence and flair, but lacked a vital goal needed to reward all their hard efforts. Carrasco found Cesar, who from 10 yards out, couldn't find the target. Adrian replaced centre back Ruben at the start of the new half, meaning a reshuffle which Torry never really came to terms with. An awful defensive mix up on 51 mins, allowed Pablo lashing home a loose ball to give Villarreal the lead. Three mins later they had doubled their lead, courtesy of a quick break down the left wing, resulting in Cristian hammering the ball past Oscar. From then on, the visitors virtually ran the show. The lively Alexi hit the post on 66 mins, as the 'yellow submarine' threatened to run riot. Torry found a brief respite from the punishment, when first Brani on 74, then Jorge on 76 mins, both had goal bound shots charged down at close range. Their quest wasn't

made easier by the ref's refusal of some quite blatant free kicks, especially obvious fouls on Carrasco, but their main undoing was being guilty of far too many unforced errors. Oscar came to his sides rescue on 85 mins, saving with his legs from a Joel close range shot, but the final say went to Torry's Corella, whose unchecked individual run from inside his own half, forced another fine save from Quique. Jorge, Corella and Carrasco were

booked for the hosts, whilst the visitors picked up 2 of their own. Next Sun 15 Feb, ko 5pm, Torry travel to local rivals Orihuela for another important div 3 match. Both teams are locked on 38 points, some 7 behind leaders Castellon, but Torry are out for revenge following their disappointing defeat earlier in the season.

RUBYS GOLF AT ALTORREAL

CD TORREVIEJA 0 LORENSKOG IFC 1

Even numbers meant our fun day would ideally be suited to a Texas Scramble. Altorreal was the venue and the course was great, although with the "keep the buggy's on the paths" rule there was a fair bit of walking for those who did not hit their shots near the paths !! However the weather was so warm it was like a summers day. Nearest the pins on the par 3's were Bill Malcolm, Andy Drinkall, and Ray Mattocks who also won nearest the pin in three. Nearest the pin in two was Andy Drinkall. Although the teams were drawn out of the hat the handicaps were surprisingly even but team Ray consisting of Ray Mattocks, Marc Doherty, Chris Lagadu and John Cunningham took the honours and the prize money. Back at the Med we all enjoyed a great buffet and the football card was won by John Goulder. Our next game is at El Plantio on the 13th of February, any one wishing to join us for this or any other fixture please contact us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co uk

By Steve Hibberd On a bitterly cold and windy Thurs evening, Torry hosted Norwegian side Lorenskog, in what proved to be a fiercely fought friendly contest. Based in Oslo, Lorenskog compete in their national div 2, which does not resume until late March. The visitors took the lead after only 8 min, from a superb long range shot, which left Torry keeper Oscar shell shocked . Although this was billed as a friendly, no one apparently told the match ref, for he administered no less than 5 cautions (all in the 1st half), as tempers flared in both camps. Torry had 3 first half goals chalked off for offside, with both Carrasco, Cristian and Obele shining in attack. Re joining the club from an Algerian 1st div outfit, Obele worked hard, and was unlucky not to score. Adrian Banderas missed a 2nd half penalty, but manager Galiana must be pleased with the work ethic shown from his side.
