FABR A’S BROKEN PROMISES AS COST A’S CHILDREN ABANDONED
The Parents and Teachers Association (APA) of the CEIP Playas de Orihuela say they are extremely angry and have now reached the end of their patience as over a hundred of their supporters launched a day of protests last Monday outside the local Junior school which is now celebrating 13 years in antiquated portacabins. They say that they will continue to protest every Monday until the situation is resolved. APA President, Yolanda Fernandez, says that the par-
ents are "absolutely disgusted" that they have to deliver their children every single day to a ‘temporary’ building complex made up of 20 antiquated portacabins which are purported to pass for the Community Junior School. The situation was brought to a head last week, she says, when on Tuesday a metal ceiling panel broke away from the roof of a classroom full of 5 year old’s and dropped down onto a desk being shared by 4 children. Fortunately the students were carrying out an activity in another part of the room at the time and there were no injuries. However the consequences could have been quite different and resulted in a number of serious injuries. Continued on Page 2

CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE One parent reported the matter to Canal Vega TV who sent down a team to investigate. Their newsman Ruben Miguez was denied access however and had to compile his report from the adjacent road. As he conducted interviews outside a number of contractors could quite clearly be seen in the background making repairs to the portacabin roofs. Fernandez said that Regional President, Alberto Fabra, had promised a brick built school for the Orihuela Costa in the run up to the 2010 elections but 5 years later the building was no further forward and in the intervening years they had made excuse after excuse. This latest incident is just one of a long list of faults and complaints that were distributed in a circular to parents and to press as APA strive to publicise the plight of their children, which they feel are being increasingly abandoned, and each of which will spend nine years on site as they undergo Junior education. Extracts include:
Monday, 16th February, 2015 “Children from Infantile have been standing in deep water up to their knees during 8 hours because of incorrect construction of the drains which flooded into their “classrooms”. We were witnesses of water leaks from the electric plugs, sleepy ramps on the way to Comedor, flooded Library with mold and damp on the books…. Our children shake from cold when they have to go to the toilet which is outside. What are we waiting for? Now is the time to stop it!!” Indeed it is difficult to see how the children can’t but be influenced by the situation and how their development would almost certainly be affected, both physically and psychologically by the cold and the rain during the winter and the intense heat during the long summer months, which the ancient utility plant is finding it increasingly difficult to manage.

Small children, it is claimed, can sit in wet clothes for up to 8 hours because the classroom heating is inferior. There are leaks in many of the classrooms and in the dining area, flooded library books are covered with mold and mildew. There are also said to be constant power failures, caused by obsolete overhead wiring, which further hinders student comfort, welfare and learning. As a result of the broken promises and the growing frustration that many parents now feel APA say that they will continue to demonstrate every Monday morning from 8:30 to 9:15 on the road outside CEIP Playas de Orihuela, and there they will stay until Fabra and his government fulfil their promises and provide the neighbourhood with what they need, a brick built school that is so very essential to the education and development of the Orihuela Costa’s increasingly abandoned young children. Let’s hope that we don’t have to wait until a child is seriously injured before any action is taken!

The Regional Minister for Social Welfare, Asunción Sánchez Zaplana, announced last week that the Generalitat Valenciana has allocated a total of 257,000 euros to equip the Disabled Care Centre in Torrevieja. She made the announcement during a visited to the Centre with the Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolon. At a press conference in the Town Hall, Zaplana said that tenders are now being sought for the procurement of the equipment necessary to operate the unit, which is designed as a residential centre for people with disabilities and a day support meeting place. The Regional Minister said she hoped the building would be fully operational and in use later in the year. The mayor said that he is looking forward to the
centre opening as soon as possible and it would quickly become an important resource in the town for such local associations as AFA, ALPE, AMFA, ADIEM and APANEE. It will provide much needed improvements to the quality of life of people with disabilities and their families. This centre for Torrevieja’s disabled (mentally and physically) is located on Avenida Delfina Viudes next to Public School No. 10 Habanera, on a municipal plot of 11,152 square meters. It is divided into 7,630 square meters of garden and a building plot of 3,522 square meters with 28 double and 32 single rooms. With this new building Torrevieja will have a public infrastructure of hospital standard and will be able to accommodate a total of 88 people in residence.

ALICANTE DOCTORS ACCUSED OF STEALING BABY The remains of a newborn girl were exhumed from a grave in an Alicante cemetery
Three retired doctors have appeared in court in Alicante charged with stealing a baby and having it adopted thirty years ago after DNA tests conducted by the Institute of Toxicology revealed that the biological profile of the remains of an infant buried in the 80s not match the mother. The doctors, who have been charged with illegal detention, have denied that the baby girl had survived labour and that they took part in its subsequent kidnapping by offering it up for adoption. Preliminary proceedings were instituted about a year at the request of the Attorney after it was first discovered that the DNA of the bone remains from a newborn girl, who was exhumed from a grave in Alicante cemetery, did not match those of the mother. At the time the magistrate investigating the case took statements from two former gynecologists from the clinic where the complainant gave birth, together with another from the doctor who signed the death certificate. Between 1950 and 1980 estimates put the total number of children that are thought to have been illegally adopted in Spain at around 300,000. This was done through a network of Catholic Church-run
children's homes and private hospitals would take newborn infants, typically from young, impoverished single mothers, who were told that their baby had died. Despite other ongoing investigations this is the first time in the province of Alicante that criminal proceedings have ever been made for the alleged theft of babies. It is understood, however, that a further four cases are close to appearing in court. Three of them are waiting for reports while the fourth awaits the laboratory to rule on the genetic profile of exhumed skeletal remains. Alicante prosecutors first initiated an investigation into alleged baby thefts from hospitals in 2011 after an avalanche of complaints had reached the Nation’s courts from the National Association of People Affected by Irregular Adoptions (Add). After three years of research, opening graves, over a dozen niches and interviews with more than sixty families, however, the prosecutor has aborted almost all of the cases because it was impossible to continue with the investigations because of DNA either matches or the time lapses involved who are alleged to have died at, or within 24 hours of, their birth, which many relatives now suspect were the subject of illegal adoption.

BRITON KILLS GERMAN PAEDOPHILE A Briton has been arrested in Spain for 'killing a paedophile who was filming his daughter'. Paramedics called to the scene rushed the victim to a hospital in La Linea on the border with Gibraltar but he died shortly after arrival. A source from the local Guardia Civil, said: "We believe he died as a result of the single punch he received but this is yet to be confirmed by the post-mortem results."
CRASH CONCLUSION A court in Elche sentenced a driver to two years in prison and a three year driving ban, after he was found to have been responsible for the death of a passenger in his car which crashed on the road between Santa Pola and Arenales del Sol in 2007, whilst trying to avoid a police checkpoint on the N-332. A claim for 13,500 euro compensation from another passenger was reduced by 20%, on account of that passenger failing to wear a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Accident investigators concluded that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and was driving at excessive speed of 80 kilometres per hour on a road where the limit was just 20 kmh.

TORREVIEJA DESALINATION PLANT LOSES MILLIONS IN FUNDING It has been revealed this week that the much hyped desalination plant in Torrevieja, the largest in Europe, has lost out in 55 million euro of funding, on account of operational deadlines not having been met. Despite the plant being theoretically ready to operate, after years of battles, court cases and wasted expense, the water is still not being sent to the potential users, most of whom are in the Murcia region incidentally, where farmers are trying to negotiate on a cheaper price on account of the already inflated cost of water from a plant that was intended to offer lower costs to users. With 300 million euro invested by Acuamed, Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas, 55 million was from European funding, although that funding is under threat on account of the deadlines not being reached, which would result on the cost coming back to Acuamed, thus passed on to the end users.
A spokesperson for Acuamed stated that the delay in satisfying the deadline was through “no fault” of theirs, and that “because of the circumstances surrounding the development” those deadlines for funding of the 2002-2006 operational program could not be met, and so Acuamed has requested the inclusion in the 2007-2013 program, which is now “pending a decision by the Commission”. The plant should have been fully operational in 2009 but met with obstacles along its entire timeline, ultimately resulting in the cessation of work whilst the courts decided on the future, which occurred in 2014 when the Constitutional Court annulled an agreement set out in March 2007 that ordered the paralysation of construction. A conflict of jurisdiction raised by the central government against Valencia stopped the works. Acuamed has also said that other beneficiaries and management bodies are also awaiting the decision from
Brussels regarding the recovery of the 55 million euro in aid destined for Torrevieja has already been spent by the Spanish central government on other projects, such as improving the supply of water in the Segura basin. Notice has already been served on central government that the European Union could claim back the subsidies for the desalination plant. Despite the delays in its infancy, the plant could have been fully operational in the summer of 2013. Water is being processed at the plant, but it is currently on schedule to produce just 80 cubic hectometres, expandable to 120, with half of the production directed, in theory, to supplies south of Alicante and Murcia, the other half to the Segura basin for sale irrigators, assuming a beneficial price can be agreed. Although we have still to reach the rainy spring season on the Costa Blanca, the reservoirs of the Segura basin are currently only at 62.2% capacity, considerably less than the 71.2% at the same time last year, but both of those are higher than the 56.4% reserve in 2013 at this time. Facing higher demands and lower reserves for all water users, and with farmers alone across the area facing increasingly difficult times, with many of them destroying crops as their destruction is sometimes more cost effective than distributing to the supermarkets and retail chains demanding lower prices, the need for their reduced production costs are clear, but sources suggest that the Confederation has not yet given concessions to farmers so they can buy the water, partly due to the insecurity of the operation, and partly due to claims that the plant couldn´t satisfy the demand at any coast, as the site does not yet have sufficient electrical power.

AMBASSADOR CALLS THE SAMARITANS During a two-day visit to the Alicante province, Her Majesty´s Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, took time out of his schedule to speak to the Samaritans. Accompanied by the newly appointed Alicante Consul, Sarah-Jane Morris, the visit was to mark the farewell of Chris Sumter, president of Samaritans in Spain. Having worked tirelessly to create a legacy of help and support for the needy, many of the team behind the Samaritans initiative can only offer praise for what has been achieved under her guide. Chris joined the Trustees in autumn of 2008 and completed her listening training in the following spring. She was responsible for the People Sub Group and took over the Training - revamping the modules and training trainers, before becoming the CEO in 2011 and then President in November, 2011. Largely praised for the development of outreach work and physical support in the heart of the community, the creation of locations such as the drop-in centre in the Punta Marina commercial centre are largely attributed to her dedication and forward thinking attitude. Unfortunately, Chris is now moving back to the UK, along with her husband, Lubbertus, who has also worked hard on behalf of the charity working on the website, press articles, banking, collection of donations of goods for the shop and a whole range of other activities. There is no doubt however that the legacy will continue thanks to the dedication of all of the volunteers and supporters behind the Samaritans in Spain. Raising a glass to her dedication, Mr Manley cut tut a cake in celebration of her work, before heading off to a meeting with a number of municipal mayors from areas of key interest to the immigrant population, including Antonio Zapata from Orihuela, and Eduardo Dolón from Torrevieja. The mayors from ten town halls represent 50% of all British nationals registered in the Alicante consular district and 21% of all British nationals registered in Spain.

NO PENALTY Juan Carlos Monedero, the cofounder of Spain’s anti-austerity Podemos party has paid €200,000 in income taxes and fines to satisfy a debt from €425,150 he earned as a consultant, party officials announced last week. “Under the law, the existence of a voluntary complimentary return implies that no tax fraud existed,” said party officials in a statement, adding that Monedero won’t have to face any new tax penalties.
HIGH FLIERS Spanish military supply company Indra has won a contract worth 14.4 million euro, and will now provide training system for EC135 helicopter. The EC135 is a twin-engine civil helicopter produced by Eurocopter, now under Airbus control, widely used amongst emergency services.
HOT PROPERTY Before returning to Madrid, the Ambassador said, “I am impressed by the way local authorities and the voluntary sector support British nationals who visit and live in this area. “However, I hope that we can do still more to help the most vulnerable Britons here and to overcome issues like the language barrier. In the discussion with local mayors we made good progress, working with them to encourage engagement and integration. “It has been wonderful to see the work done by charities in the area, and I would encourage people to sign up and support their local charities, some of which are crying out for additional volunteers.
“I’ve also seen some great examples of joint working such as the SATE office in Benidorm and the help that Samaritans in Spain and other voluntary organisations give to vulnerable British nationals. “I hope that our team in Alicante will continue to build on these successes to ensure that Britons get the support they need”. The mayors and the Ambassador agreed on the importance of all British nationals registering on the Padrón and, if they did so by the deadline of 31 December for the next local elections, as well as voting in the upcoming polls to make sure they have their say and their voices are heard.
Recovery of the property sales sector will not normalise until 2017, according to a report released this week, partly due to the absorption of stock from the boom times. The report, published by KPMG, still shows Spain as an “attractive” country for investment property, whereas seven out of ten industry executives believe that opportunistic funding has given value to investors, where bargains still exist although are now starting to increase in price.

SLIGHT INCREASE IN COSTA VOTER REGISTRATION
Orihuela´s councillor for International residents, Martina Scheurer, has revealed the final figures for foreigners registered to vote on the Orihuela Costa, which for statistical purposes includes Entrenaranjos, shortly to be published by the Spanish National Statistics Institute, the INE. After the deadline at the end of the year, there are now a total of 5,259 foreigners who are on the voters list. The figure is a slight increase from the 4,733 previously, but is still widely under representing the international community and their right to vote in the elections in May. As previously reported, there was an information table set up in the town hall providing details on how to ensure you are on the voters list. That campaign resulted in just fewer than 200 additional registrations. We also know that the INE carried out a postal campaign, whereas they sent a simple return-to-register form to around 3,500 people. Therefore, that campaign has yielded around 300 additional voter registrations, not even 10% of those targeted. We also believe that there are some 3,200 Spanish people eligible to vote, clearly showing how the foreign population is actually more represented, but with the collective figure of around 8,500 residents, that is a considerable shortfall of the 35,000 residents, and so only a quarter of the population is actually now registered and eligible to vote. The figure gets even more depressing when one takes into account that of those who took the trouble to register their right to vote, many still don´t exercise that right on the day. With voter turnout around 50%, the total number of votes from the Orihuela Costa could well be as little as just over 4,000, of which 2,500 are the foreign residents, across all European nationalities. In the last elections, albeit they were for European representation, the voter turnout was just 43%. With the manner in which votes are counted, the concluding figure could make it even more difficult for the smaller parties to gain council seats this year. As Scheurer explained, “in the last elections, we, the green party, got around 3,500 votes, and we managed to get 3 councillors with that”, and whilst explaining the minimum threshold, continuing, “a party needs 5% of the votes to get their first councillor, so that
was around 1,500 votes. Any figure less than that would be a wasted vote as there is no way they could get a seat”. Although they cannot be directly transposed, and there has been a strong growth with political groups such as Podemos, in the European elections the PP and PSOE gained 45% and 23% of the votes respectively. Therefore, collectively, 68% of the votes went to the two major parties, thus leaving just 32% to share across all other political groups. Therefore, in the transposed case of Orihuela Costa, a total of 2,720 votes to share across up to 10 different groups. Within the foreign residents, the total number of voters, assuming the same share to the PP and PSOE, would be just 1,683 votes. The conclusion being that unless all those remaining choose to vote for the same party, the chance of proper representation within the foreign community of the Orihuela Costa is zero. Of course this is all based on statistical data, opinion polls and conjecture, because the reality is change can still happen. In fact, “Cambiemos Orihuela”, was the title given to an information conference held in the María Moliner library in Orihuela on Friday, in which the biggest contenders of the smaller groups came together to affirm their commitment to work towards a single goal of creating a combined force to tackle the historic majority of the bigger two parties. As we previously reported, Podemos are a force now to be reckoned with in Orihuela and the Orihuela Costa, and with the Los Verdes and Izquierda Unida combining under the same electoral pact, they are a
The Town Hall Information Desk resulted in approximately 200 extra voters force indeed. But if you want to enforce change, there are still the smaller groups to consider, such as the historically coastal centric CLARO group, or their former partners CLR, and others. Either way, there are two key messages to remember in the run up to the elections, it is now more important than ever that everybody researches what each political group is offering and what they will and can do for the Orihuela Costa, perhaps based on promises made or indeed broken, but the second message is also vital, the message that if you have registered your right to vote, you must exercise that right. With so many votes at risk of being wasted, this election seems set to be one of the most exciting and contested representations of democracy and never has it been more important to take part, as the political landscape is about to change forever and one way or another, you can be part of that change.

PROVIDING A UNITED FRONT LOS DOLSES PRESIDENTS ASSOCIATION According to the Secretary Anne Faulkner. 'this is a good time to join the group’
Recently, Presidents of Communities within the boundaries of Los Dolses held their third Annual meeting. Formed as a result of ongoing and increasing problems which individual Presidents found themselves battling with, e.g. mountains of green rubbish, holes in roads.etc. a small number joined together to form a group, advising and supporting each other and most importantly having the ability to approach other agencies with a united coordinated voice. Soon joined by others this group has been able to sucessfully wage war on some of the problems associated with antisocial behaviour exhibited by residents and non residents affecting the area. Many of the issues are ongoing and the core membership would like to invite other Presidents not already attending our meetings to come and join the
group. An invitation is being extended to developments within the Los Dolses area where there is no Community organisation to arrange for representation at the meetings. The Secretary of the Association, Anne Hadley Faulkner, says 'This is a good time to join the group as we are updating our Constitution, therefore if residents of areas within Los Dolses, not recognised as Communities, wish to be included in the efforts made by the Association to maintain the appearance of the Community at large, our Constitution would need to reflect this'. The Association stresses it is non profit making, non political and works for the benefit of the residents who call Los Dolses their home. For more information contact may be made with the Chairman, Roy Gregory, tel. 966 764 337 or the Secretary, Anne on tel. 966 764 230.

WEEKEND ADVENTURE DAY AT RUFETE
The councillor for youths in Torrevieja, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, has announced that her department has organised a special “adventure day” for young people which will take place on Sunday the 1st of March at the Rufete park in Torremendo.
The event, which has activities arranged by the Centro de Información y Animación Juvenil, or CIAJ, will feature fun features such as paintball, Quad riding on a closed circuit, abseiling, archery, bouncy castles
and “Human Foosball”, among other activities. The councillor has said that the event has activities that are suitable for all ages, and that the aim is to create a family-friendly day, as parents are also invited along too, although there are no obligations for parents to partake in the activities. There are also designated seating and dining areas set aside at the park, so the family can also enjoy their own picnic lunch whilst the kids run around keeping busy. The price, including all activities and monitors, will be 15 euro for those aged over 6 years, 17 euro for those over 10 years and 22 euro for adults and children over 14 years. The councillor also points out that those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, whereas those under 18 can attend alone with parental permission. There will be a free bus departing at 09:00 from the bus station at the Eras de la Sal, set to return from the park at 17:00. PROVINCIAL ENERGY BOOST
The provincial council of Alicante has approved over four million euro in grants destined towards energy saving projects that will benefit 43 municipalities in the province, with key focus being given towards Almoradí, Daya Vieja, Pilar de la Horadada and Rojales. The aim of the injection of cash is for the creation of sustainable energy initiatives, which will subsequently reduce consumption and therefore offer future savings to the municipal funds, whilst achieving greater energy efficiency. With the grants, municipalities may make improvements to street lighting and the lighting in municipal buildings, water heaters, also installing photovoltaic energy generators. It is not just a cash handout to the municipal councils however, as the Provincial Council will pay 87.5% of the contributions of€3,713,624 whilst the municipalities will have to assume the remaining 12.5%.
The grants are of varying amounts from 14,000 euro to 187,000 euro, with another 39 municipal applications possible in the future, once those councils are in a position to meet the financial investment for their part.

GUARDAMAR FOCUSED ON TOURISM INITIATIVES In a meeting this week attended by the Consul of Norway and members of the Chambers of Commerce of Alicante and Orihuela, around 150 local business representatives agreed on the need to highlight their demands for improved connectivity with the town of Guardamar and AlicanteElche airport.
The announcement was made during a conference focusing on tourism under the slogan, “Strategies for Future Development”, which was held in the Cultural Centre and led by the mayor of the town, Carmen Verdú of the Partido Popular. The attendees also agreed to focus on touristic accreditations, such as the Sistema Integral de Calidad Turística en Destinos, or SICTED, which has been steadily growing in interest around the area. With 5,000 tourist beds available in the town, the need to highlight tourism is ever increasing during the off-season months, when opportunities for special deals and offers are often at their greatest, although with fewer tourists to take up on these offers dominating other locations such as Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, smaller places already have to battle for their share, especially with little or no integration into the tourist travel network of the airport hub. Recent initiatives such as the “Guardamar me gusta” campaign presented at the recent FITUR tourism event were praised by the attendees, where it was also highlighted that campaigns focusing on the archaeological heritage as well as the richness of the dunes of Guardamar are already planned for the future.

SEVERELY MALNOURISHED HORSE DUMPED AT ROJALES RESCUE CENTRE For the first time in it’s seven-year history, a neglected horse has been dumped at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales. The severely malnourished mare was left tied to the centre’s rubbish skip with a piece of string, and was discovered early last Saturday morning. “She’s so thin she was on the point of collapse and we really don’t think she would have survived much longer in the cold weather conditions we are having at the moment,” said centre co-founder Sue
Weeding. We have named her Mystery. “Word has obviously got out that we don’t have a horse trailer at the moment so they are walking them here.” Even though we sometimes struggle to fund ourselves we are please that they now bring them to us and no longer leave them to die on a piece of waste ground. We get calls from all over Spain for help which is why just before Christmas rescued horses seized by the police from Granada were sent to us as no one else would take them. All of this strengthens our determination to grow as an organisation to help more horses, ponies and
donkeys. The rescue centre is fundraising for a new horse trailer after the axle snapped on their 15-year-old trailer last month. One horse rescued after the breakdown had to be walked the 45 minutes home to the centre because there is currently no alternative form of transport. Sue said the centre is raising funds to buy a new trailer which is low to the ground and therefore does not need a ramp as some of the horses we rescue are very weak and traumatised and going up a noisy ramp can be difficult for them and dangerous for us,” she says. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
The Disgruntled Expat I had dinner with George again last week. As regular readers will probably remember, George is an elderly friend of ours, whom we have known for many years. I sometimes wonder why I bother with George, since he spends most of his time complaining. George will complain about anything, including ‘the natives’, as he calls them, the Spanish language, food, health service and the weather. I often wonder why George did not pack up and head back to his home town of Preston in the UK many years ago, such is his distain for all things ‘foreign’. George is a ‘professional complainer’; however, when I am in the mood, I do find him amusing and it always provides a healthy balance to my own rather more optimistic view of expat life. George grunted as he sat down in his least disliked restaurant, as I made my first mistake of asking him how he was. We then spent a good fifteen minutes discussing his various ailments, his feet, his heart, his doctor, the hospital and the ambulance service before, thankfully, our starters arrived. For a few minutes, George was silent as he began to tackle his prawn cocktail. He seemed to be enjoying it, although I could be wrong. Suddenly, he put down his fork, glared at me accusingly and asked, “What have you done to the weather?” I was a little taken aback, since weather control is not one of my jobs. “Well, I guess, it has been a lit-
tle cooler than usual,” I replied. This was the response that George wanted and he began to recount news items and weather statistics, which claimed that it has been the coolest in the Canary Islands for at least 30 years. He hadn't come to the islands for this sort of treatment and he was actually thinking of returning to Preston. “I’m going home,” George announced in a deliberate voice. “I’ve had enough of all this nonsense. I can’t stand the cold weather and the health service is going down the pan here. Do you know that I had to wait for two days to get an appointment to see the doctor? I could have died waiting all that time.” I didn't like to tell him that some friends who had recently visited told us that they had to wait two weeks before they could see their doctor in the UK. George was actually considering returning to his home town at the tender age of 80 plus. Since George has been threatening this in all the years that I have known him; it seemed highly unlikely. I said nothing, since I have risen to this bait many times before and have learned my lesson. George did have a point. It has certainly has been a little cooler in the Canary Islands than normal this year, and the coolest January since 2006. Don’t get me wrong, we have had some lovely warm, sunny days as well, with temperatures in the high teens and even low twenties, but it is certainly cooler than normal. Of course, expats and particularly those from the UK, continue to enjoy complaining about the weather, wherever they are. In fact, the cooler weather has provided endless entertainment and conversation for some, which I guess has been a blessing in many ways. The main problem has been the wind, which I am told has been more than 35 per cent stronger than usual for this time of the year. The gusty wind has been cold, which has helped to bring down temperatures across all the islands. Of course, the cooler weather is hardly noticed by our visitors from Scandinavia and Germany, who mostly spend their days in shorts and flimsy tops. Given that their countries are much colder, they do wonder what all the fuss is about. On a more positive note, our Canarian friends and neighbours tell us that they are enjoying the cooler weather, and wish that they could have more of it. You clearly cannot please everyone. Returning to George, who had by now tackled most of his main course
of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, seemed disappointed at the long silence from me in response to his announcement. “I’m going home. It’s been a long time, but I’ve had enough,” George repeated loudly, wiping horseradish sauce off his white beard. “So when are you leaving, George? We really must meet up before you go. I’ll help you to pack, if it will help.” “I’m not sure yet. I will probably wait until after my next hospital appointment, and I really would like to see a bit of Carnival. I’m also going on a day trip to one of the other islands, but I can’t remember which one. I’ll also need to find somewhere to live in Preston.” “Well, do your homework before you go, George.” I added, seriously. “It’s been a bit cold in Preston recently, so maybe you should wait until the better weather.” “Maybe you are right. I fancy a desert.” “Why not, George. Anyway, I hear that we are in for another lovely warm day tomorrow.” If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). INCREASE IN MINOR MOTOR COLLISION CL AIMS IN 2014 Statistics released by the Spanish traffic department, the DGT, reveal that there were 1,734,997 minor claims for traffic incidents during 2014, representing an increase of 0.32% compared to 2013 and the first time the figure has increased since 2007.
According to the national association for insurers, UNESPA, the “phenomenon is a symptom of incipient improvement in the economic situation and cheaper fuel”. The data has also allowed for indications as to the most likely areas to suffer a motor insurance claim related incidents, with the average across the country being 3,710 accidents per 100,000 inhabitants. Far higher than that average are places like Cantabria with 4,834 per 100,000, the Balearics with 4,617, Galicia with 4,189, the Canarias with 4,143, and Andalucía with 4,052. Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the scale and therefore offering a reduced

likelihood of an incident, we see places such as Aragón with just 2,713 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants, Castilla-La Mancha with 3,125, País Vasco with 3,326, and Castilla y León with 3,463. However, despite the increase being blamed on more traffic on the roads, the busiest time of year,
August, proved to have the least number of incidents, with just 124,000, well below the monthly average of 145,000. The worst month was in fact October with 156,534 incidents, followed by March with 150,004. Breaking down the days when incidents are more likely to occur, Friday is statistically the worst day, with an average of 5,739 incidents, followed by Monday with 5,542. Sunday looks to be the safest day with an average of 2,635 incidents, followed by Saturdays with 3,671. The worst day recorded in 2014 was Monday the 15th of December, where the total number of incidents stood at 6,677, representing a minor, though claimable incident on the roads every 13 seconds, on average. At the opposite end of the scale, we see that Christmas Day was the safest day on the roads, with Thursday the 25th of December yielding just 1,925 claimable minor incidents, one every 45 seconds, hardly surprising.
In a bid to improve both the flow of traffic and safety of the roads, the Ministry of Development has announced that from April heavy goods vehicles will be banned on almost 300 kilometres of main roads 240 of which are in the Valencia region. The ban on vehicles over 7,500 kilograms affects two major routes, a 170 kilometre section of the N332 between Silla and de San Juan, north of Alicante, and 125 kilometres of the N-340 between Hospitalet del Infante in Tarragona, Cataluña and Oropesa in Castellon. Both sections have a high concentration of accidents, black spots and sections of roads with improvements pending, some of which have been outstanding for many years. On section of the N-332 between Favara and Sueca has recorded 18 accidents resulting in 5 deaths and 22 people seriously injured on a single stretch of just 10 kilometres. Remedial work was awarded in 2007 but then frozen. Much of the N-340 route has a widening scheme pending and doesn´t have hard shoulders or passing points along most of the affected route.
Trucks which would normally use the routes to reach their destinations will now have to use the motorway network. The bad news for hauliers is that a lot of their route will be on toll roads, but the good news is that the ministry is negotiating with the toll road operator to offer a discount from April, offering between 35% and 50% of the full price. It is expected that the road hauliers associations will not simply accept the new proposals, as they already consider the 22 billion euro the industry pays in tax each year is over 4 times the investment in the road network they use, although with the price of fuel now reducing, there is a possibility, although unlikely, that they will simply accept the diversion welcomingly.

Why just dream? Dreams can come true!
How many times have you looked out to sea and admired the beautiful view, with the blue sky blending seamlessly into the blue sea. A sailing yacht gracefully pushing its way through the white topped rolling waves. How often have you imagined how great it would be to venture out for a sail especially on a hot day when the sea looks so cool clear and inviting? Only to be brought down to earth by the thought of writing out the cheque, because everyone knows sailing is a financial black hole of astronomic proportions. Of course you could always pawn the wife’s shoe and jewellery collection; “no best not to venture into dangerous territory.” Far better to just spend the children’s inheritance, or could there just be a better way? Well as they say, I know a man who does; or rather I know a group that does; a group of ex pats who certainly do know how to cut costs down to size. I speak of the SAMM Catamaran Group which is just one of six groups currently affiliated to the sailing association Mar Menor. The Cat Group are the proud owners of Hamoor, a Stryder 23ft cruising catamaran. They have a proven history which goes back to 2008 when they first formed this boat share group. Their intention was to enjoy the near perfect sailing waters of the Mar Menor, and maybe to venture a little further afield. It all started when the then Commodore of Samm, John Curtis generously decided to let this new group have this catamaran on permanent loan to help them get under way. Hamoor was an ideal day boat just needing a bit of TLC, John was busy rebuilding a larger craft for exploring the Mediterranean and decided he had one too many yachts,” can you have one too many yachts”? The boat was in good condition, just needed a few fittings replacing and a coat of paint. So a few work days were organised and an enthusiastic group of members soon knocked her into shape and then put to sea for a shakedown sail. With the boat getting the all clear the group then divided up into various levels of sailing experience. There were those who were qualified skippers with ICC or Day Skipper and some without any qualifications but never the less could sail, and those who just wanted to be passengers or wanted to learn new skills. The qualified skippers formed the back bone of the group and aided
Members of the SAMM Catamaran Group which is just one of six groups currently affiliated to the sailing association Mar Menor.
along by those who could sail they would worked together as skipper and first mate. They would then arrange sailing days and act as crew taking out any group members wanting to sail. The boat comfortably carries 8 people, with a large flat stable deck and being a catamaran it is not prone to heeling. Sailing days take many forms some days are dedicated to improving sailing skills. Learning basic boat handling techniques, picking up and casting off a mooring, coming alongside a jetty, even man over board drill was practised, though this had to be dropped because he got fed up of getting wet!! “Just joking, we used the wife”. Those wanting to take the helm were encouraged to do so, and if they wished to master all the aspects of sailing. Many sailing days are spent locally simply cruising the tranquil waters of the Mar Menor stopping maybe to have lunch while moored off a beach. Or enjoying a picnic or swimming off the back of the boat
which is a great experience. Especially enjoyable if you have only swum off the beach before, to float around in crystal clear water with near perfect visibility way down to the sea bed. With just a few friends for company, no thronging crowds, it really is a great feeling. For those looking to match their skills against others then there is always the Samm Spring and Autumn handicap race series. If you have not raced before it really will sharpen your sailing skill and give you that adrenalin rush. There are also days when the boat ventures a little further away, they have an old chart to steer by, but never go near the areas which warn “there be pirates and sea monsters here,” well I did say it was an old chart! Mini cruises are usually a day trip into the Mediterranean for a cruise along the cost to Cartagena or maybe Torrevieja sometimes taking in an overnight stop. The group is very friendly and sociable, having regular lunches out for Menu del dia at various restaurants in the area. New members are welcome whether you have any sailing ability or not. Also new skippers who hold an ICC or have sailing ability to a minimum of Day Skipper are needed. Sailing goes on for most of the year enjoying all the seasons afloat and experiencing the Mar Menor in all its guises. The group has their own assessment and training as the handling characteristics of Hamoor are very different from a mono-hull. So have I tempted you to take a closer look into the pleasures sailing can bring? If the answer is yes then just give Mike or Derek a call and arrange to have a chat over a coffee. For further information contact Mike Harding on 968 572 315 or Derek English on 965321613 or go to www.sailingmarmenor.com

THE TRAIN NOT ARRIVING… Saudi Arabian authorities have issued a stark warning to the Spanish consortium building the €6.7-billion AVE high-speed rail link between Medina and Mecca, which is suffering significant delays as the kingdom’s new transport minister, Abdullah bin Abdulrahman al-Muqbel, issued a public statement calling on the 12 company consortium to speed up work or risk having the contract rescinded.
HEARTY WORK Doctors at a the Gregorio Marañon hospital in Madrid have successfully used stem cells to treat victims of heart attacks for the first time in medical history. Doctors took stem cells that were harvested from a healthy donor and then implanted them into seven different patients who had suffered from a heart attack. They say they are happy with the results and plan to repeat the procedure with 55 other patients in a trial. An official statement from the hospital commented on the success they have seen so far. “Seven patients have already been operated on and they have progressed very well despite having suffered serious damage to their heart tissue”.

WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE Dear Editor, On Saturday 31st January, Nigel Hopkins and all of his singers and musicians put on a truly wonderful evenings performance of Music of the Night. Afterwards the Samaritans in Spain undertook a bucket shake to raise funds. The audience was extremely generous on the night raising an amazing 565 Euros. Then Nigel himself donated enough to take the amount to an incredible 650 Euros. I would like to offer my thanks, and the thanks of all our volunteers and indeed our callers for this generosity. I would also like to offer my sincere gratitude to all of Nigel’s singers, musicians and other helpers for a wonderful evening’s entertainment. And I mustn’t forget the staff and management of The Orihuela Costa Resort for their time making us comfortable and refreshed. Thank you to you all. Chris Sumter President, Samaritans in Spain
GAS BOTTLE RIP OFF Dear Ed, For some months now we have been condoning CEPSA petrol stations for over charging for gas bottles! Firstly I thought the government fixed the maximum price at 17.50 euro per bottle. All CEPSA garages in and around Torrevieja charge 17.50 euro plus 45cents as a handling charge, PER BOTTLE! If you use Repsol bottles they are fixed 17.50 euro. If you buy your bottles, either CEPSA or REPSOL, from a petrol station that is not a CEPSA or REPSOL dealer, ie SHELL or others you would expect to pay a charge. I have complained to CEPSA and they just said "we have no control over the price our garages charge". But I understood the government do fix the price? It would still be wrong if they charged for example 3 bottles at 17.50e plus 45cents, but they actually charge 45cents PER BOTTLE. I have just bought 3 bottles,
3x17.50=52.50 euro, plus 3 times 45cents= total 53.85 euro. The guy only came to the cage ONCE for 3 ,4, or 6 bottles, a total rip off at 45 cents per bottle. Why do not Repsol charge "a handling charge"?. Why are we tolerating this rip off? Regards M.P.C
JUST WONDERFUL That is what it was. An operation was necessary and I found myself in Torrevieja hospital. A place of dedication, professionalism, and above all tremendous kindness. It goes without saying that the attention to detail from all the staff. With sincere thanks Rita Tobin
WINTER FUEL ALLOWANCE Below is a reply to two Leader readers following an appeal to their UK MP regarding the proposed loss of the WFA.
Dear Mr & Mrs Berg, Thank you for your email to me about the Winter Fuel Payment in Spain. I do appreciate your points. I won’t patronise you with a woolly response; some difficult decisions needed to be made to deal with the dreadful economic mismanagement of the previous Government. In order to fairly distribute the payments to those with a climate similar to or cooler than the UK, this Government has worked closely with the Met Office to determine the average winter temperature in EEA countries and from winter 2015/16, Winter Fuel Payments will no longer be payable to individuals in EEA countries which have an average winter temperature higher than the UK. I appreciate you have concerns over the treatment of some Spanish regions in these calculations. The calculation of the average winter temperatures for Spain takes into account the whole country, and also includes its respective, relevant overseas territories, where the same EU social security coordination rules apply.
I believe these are important changes which will re-focus the benefit on its original purpose and avoid a situation where the Government will be paying 115,000 people in warmer countries a Winter Fuel Payment by 2015. As such, I do not feel it is appropriate to sign EDM 695. To turn briefly to your points about overseas aid and immigration to the UK, I don’t think that it is right to balance our nation’s books on the backs of the world’s poorest people. This Government has also taken tough action on ensuring that those who move to the UK do not have immediate access to benefits to clamp down on any form of “benefits tourism”, including establishing a three month period in which any migrant must look for work on their arrival before accessing any benefits. I hope this helps explain the reasoning behind these difficult decisions. With best wishes, Chloe Smith MP for Norwich North
INVOLVE THE EU Dear Editor, May I suggest that your readers also write to their MEPs regarding the withdrawal of the WFA. The change in UK law is contary to EU law (Regulation 883/2004) and your MEP should write to the EU commission on your behalf. Mine did. Richard Perou
FACEBOOK COPS Dear Mark Well done on your front page article last week entitled ‘Facebook Cops’. At long last I am delighted to see that the Guardia Civil, or at least an element of their Torrevieja Guardia Barracks, seems keen to interact with the general public and the ex pats in particular. I have always found many Spanish Driving Laws to be in contradiction to those I have been used to following so to be able to find an explanation is extremely usefil. Jill Ryder, Torrevieja

ALICANTE HOSPITAL TO CARRY OUT KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS According to a statement issued last week by the Department of Health The General Hospital of Alicante has been accredited by the National Transplant Organization for conducting cross renal transplants, based on the exchange of live kidney donors between two or more partners, and as such becomes only the second hospital in the Region to perform this type of transplant.
It joins a list of twenty national hospitals which are said to perform at a level of excellence in the care of patients who require a kidney transplant. To achieve this accreditation, the Hospital has shown compliance with all the requirements, mandated by the Spanish Ministry of Health including the successful minimum performance of fifteen living donor transplantation procedures in the three years The aim of this type of transplant is to provide patients suffering with chronic renal failure the possibility of receiving a transplant from a living donor, even though their partner or family members are incompatible. Surgery involves the use of less invasive surgical techniques and the study and care of the donor (before, during and after the procedure) also leading to fewer complications to the donor. However this type of transplant still involves a complex logistical process, requiring full cooperation between the central office of the National Transplant Organization (ONT), the regional transplant coordinators, hospitals and medical teams involved in the operation. A key aspect of the program is the National Register of donor-recipient pairs which is now produced as a software application that allows the speeding up of the possibilities of exchange between registered donors and recipients.

W EIGHT FLUCTUATIONS LINKED WITH INCREASED FRACTURE RISK Both weight gain and weight loss in older (postmenopausal) women are associated with increased incidence of fracture, but at different anatomical sites, finds a study published in The BMJ this week. The findings also challenge the traditional view that weight gain protects against fractures. The influence of body weight on the risk of fracture is complex. Low body weight is a well recognised risk factor for fracture, but obesity also increases the risk of fracture at some sites. How fracture patterns differ after intentional and unintentional weight loss in postmenopausal women is also unknown. So a team of US researchers investigated associations between postmenopausal change in body weight and incidence of fracture - and associations between voluntary and involuntary weight loss with risk of fracture. They analysed data on over 120,000 healthy postmenopausal women who were taking part in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study and Clincial Trials. Women were aged 50-79 at the start of the study (1993-98) and were followed for an average of 11 years. Information such as age, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity levels, calcium and vitamin D intake was recorded at the start of the study. Each year, participants were weighed and asked to report fractures of the upper limb (hand, wrist, elbow, upper arm, shoulder), lower limb (foot, knee, upper leg except hip, ankle), and central body (hip, pelvis and spine). Change in body weight was categorised as stable (a change of less than 5% from initial weight), weight loss (a decrease of 5% or more since initial examination), and weight gain (an increase of 5% or more since initial examination). Results at the third annual visit show that, during an average of 11 years of follow-up, compared with stable weight, weight loss was associated with a 65% increase in hip fracture, a 9% increase in upper limb fracture, and a 30% increase in central body fracture. Also, compared with women who had stable weight, weight gain was associated with a 10% increase in upper limb fractures and an 18% increase in lower limb fractures, but no difference in central body fractures. Compared with stable weight, unintentional weight loss was associated with an increased risk of hip and spine fractures, whereas intention-
al weight loss was associated with an increased risk of lower limb fractures, but a decreased risk of hip fractures. This study is the first to focus specifically on how weight change can differentially influence upper limb, lower limb, and central body fractures among postmenopausal women in the US, say the authors. The findings "have clinical and research implications and challenge the traditional clinical paradigm of weight gain protecting against fractures," they add. "Clinicians should be aware that even intentional weight loss is associated with increased rates of lower limb fractures." An accompanying editorial discusses the implications for clinical practice. Juliet Compston, emeritus professor of bone medicine at Cambridge University, says unintentional weight loss of 5% or more in postmenopausal women "should be regarded as a risk factor for fracture, particularly hip fracture." The finding of an increased risk of fracture with intentional weight loss and with weight gain, albeit small, however, "emphasises the need for measures to prevent bone loss during interventions to reduce weight," she adds.

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB
QUESADA BOWLS CLUB
By Bobbie Sims LA MARINA PATHFINDERS - We were playing El Rancho Broncos away today, our points were 6-8 and shots were quite close, 94-112, there were 2 teams with the same shot difference, Ann Stone, Berni Carr and Sue Daniels 25-16, and Barbara Forshaw, Mike Surch and John Morgan 24-15. LA MARINA ASTRONAUTS - Torrential rain put paid to our game on Monday at Horadada, so it meant a replay on Wednesday, on our return trip to Horadada Falcons for the replay, it could have not been tighter, 7 points each and we only just lost the overall by 100101, top of the winning teams were Dave McGraw, Jack Chorlton and George Chambers with shots of 24-13. LA MARINA EXPLORERS - San Miguel Pulsars were our opponents on a very cold day at home, points came out at 8-6 with 3 wins and the overall shots to us, our highest winning rink was Kathy Manning, Jim Reeves and Alex Whyte with a brilliant result of 31-15. FEDERATION FOURS - A tough day against Greenland's Bears, but at least we turned up and enjoyed each other's company, all the points went to Greenland's and the shots were fairly close, 42-54. LA MARINA DOLPHINS - Only a 4 shot difference in the result against Greenland's Elms today, 114-110 just giving us the overall and making the points 6 to La Marina and 8 to the Elms, congrats go to Martin Butler, Cliff Rawlingson and Don Harrison winning their rink by a mighty 33-8, but well done all of you. LA MARINA SEAGULLS - El Rancho strikes again, we were away to the Mustangs and they took 12 points to our 2 and the shots were 80 La Marina and 143 El Rancho, well done Mike Stone, Jean and Terry Perchard for flying our flag with a win of 19-13. LA MARINA SHARKS - Today on a very sunny morning, we were at home to Greenland's Oaks, in a close game we came away with 8 points to 6 and a shot difference of 98-90, our top winning rink by 2313 were Tom Spencer, Bill Sims and Alan Castle.
Monday found The Broncos entertaining La Marina Pathfinders and did well in a close match, both teams took 3 rinks each and The Broncos took the overall shots, a fair result to a good morning’s bowls. Marion Haynes, Rob Clark and John Newell 16-25. Edward Elsam, Tricia Elsam and Malc Elmore 12-15. John Cleal, David Haynes and John Skipper 15-24. Helga Schiffman, Sandra Twentyman and Eddie Thomson 27-9. Bob Easthope, Ron Edwards and Shirley Edwards 1810. Tony Robinson, Graham Day and Mike Ager 24-11. In the Rinks Invitation League on Wednesday the Raiders travelled for the last time, in this league, to Emerald Isle to play the Reds. A great time was had by one and all, on a day were the sun shone and the wind had dropped. The one noticeable thing is that our away results are improving, we won one rink, we lost one on the last end and our ladies rink won the first end and the last but ends won in between, were a little sparse. Therefore the Reds came away with the two points. On Friday The Mustangs played host to La Marina Seagulls, with the chill wind we started with, becoming positively hot. As always we had great fun and some splendid bowls from both teams and as is often the case, the play was closer than the score might infer. The Mustangs mirrored the away result by taking the rinks 5 to 1 and the overall shots by a comfortable margin. Maxine Wright, Gary Newson and Rod Wright 21-12. Richard Needham, Barbara Jones and Geoff Jones 1319. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 33-7. Jim Gracie, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 26-20. Jane Hamill, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 22-11. June Whitworth, Keith Cunningham and Stew Hamill 28-11. For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965 077 093 or at briantaylor_es@yahoo.co.uk or Carolyn Harris on 966 774 316 or at elranchobowls.secretary @gmail.com. Sponsored by Rightmove.
Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties Friday saw our Swallows team away to La Siesta where we managed to take a healthy win 12-2 to put us into second position. Not such a good result for the Swifts who only managed 4 pts at home to La Siesta. Our Saba Pearls Squad were home to Emerald Isle Titans this week, and the result was well in our favour with a 12-2 win, putting us on equal points at the top but second on goal difference. Our Diamonds squad are still pushing hard and are currently in 4th position in the Voyager league, having had a good result away at Vistabella with a win on 3 rinks. Wednesday our Winter League was at home to San Miguel where we had a 11-3 win. Our Berleen team were back to winning form and still maintain top position. Our Panthers Fed 4s team were home to San Luis Blues where the overall result was very close until the last few ends. In the event Pete Bonsor’s rink managed to keep ahead over Keith Jones’s rink, with Jack Martin’s rink going down by 1 shot on the last end. Fortunately the 2 points keep us in top spot. The Bowls Club now offer open bowling on Tuesday afternoons 1.30 p.m. for 2.00 p.m. where your host will be Jack Burrell and prizes are on offer. Members and non members are welcome. Bowls are available to hire. For people who would like to get into the game of bowls, our club offers a new bowlers coaching programme.

LA MANGA CRUSADERS By Brian Simon On Friday, 13 February La Manga Crusaders played Horadada Royals and it turned out to be lucky day for the home team with a comfortable win in wonderful sunny conditions. The Royals did have one success with the trips led by Alan Pugh, John Goddard and Jack Linman gaining a very narrow victory on the last end over Stuart Fisher, Eileen Dunmore and Shirley Ault by 20 shots to 19. After this one set back La Manga took control and claimed victory with wins for Robin Lowman, John Grace and Joe Scott by 46 points to 4 against Ann Allen, Carol Linehan and Rosemary Guppy followed by Ron Stokes, Elizabeth Warwick and Peter Wood against Mick Blunt, Sandra Simpson and Fred Trigwell by 35 points to 5. Ann Grace, Sue Letby and Sarah Lowman won against Brian Eatough, Terry Hucknall and Barry Evans by 27 shots to 9. Last but by no means least Michael Warwick, Tudor Gregory and Ken Olerenshaw won against John Murlock, David Allen and Tony Burchall by 31-3. COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB By StJohn Broadhurst Another away game last week for the Flamingos with a trip up to Montemar on 9 Feb to take on the Toreadors in a SABA Discovery league match. The Flamingos continued their good start to the year with another impressive win, winning on five rinks as well as the long game. Celebrating with wins this week were Carole Donnellan, Del Gunning and Karen Kirk 20-19. Andy White, Les Turner and StJohn Broadhurst 14-12. Mike Davies, Joel Fernandez and Dot Davies 1915. Sheila Whitehall, Dennis Birkett and Peter Whitehall 21-10. Pat Patton, Bryan Kirk and Brian Patton 18-12. Shots Flamingos 105 (12 pts) Toreadors 85 (2 pts). No Federated Fours match for the Clarets last week as heavy rain in the Valle on Thursday meant the game against Emerald Isle Leprechauns had to be postponed. The Ramblers also had an away game against Vistabella Lanzadores on Friday, 13 February in a CBBA Southern league match. It proved to be unlucky 13 for the Ramblers as the Lanzadores ran out winners, reversing the score of the Flamingos. Well done to Carole Donnellan, Dennis Birkett and Peter Whitehall who picked up a win 19-10. Overall shots Ramblers 55 (2 pts) Lanzadores 131 (12 pts). www.countrybowlsclub.com

EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON with this term´s merit table warming up nicely. Don’t forget outstanding individual performances gain merit table points weekly, culminating in the three category winners being announced on Finals night. This week´s matches leave just 6 to play, Division 1 still very tight at the top, Meerkats favourites over the Hyenas but still having to play several tough games to include their “bogey side” the Porters from Porter House. The Bears seemingly have Division 2 wrapped up, however the fight for runners up spot is as close as ever, all three yet to play Breakaways. Its going down to the wire!

180´s: Peter Ayres x 2 (Porter House), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov, Lee Maiden x 2 (Meerkats), Mike Smith x 2, Del Lister (Breakaways), Shaun Smith, Nick Spicer (Hyenas), Matt Cummins (Pint Depot Kings), Derek Halpin (Evolution), Simone de Lacy (Junction Jaguars) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars), Nick Spicer (Hub Hyenas) We are now into the last third of the season, with plenty of competitions to play. With both cups and plate team finals now determined its now time to stage the more personal events of triples, doubles and singles. Entry forms are now out for triples and pairs entries closing this week, both competitions to be played in early March. Very soon entry forms will be distributed for both Ladies and Mens Singles events, first round matches to be contested in early April. I understand Steph Simpson and Sid Cross will not be defending their pairs title this term, so two new names will be added to the illustrious former champions trophy. Will Pat Abrams and Yvonne Rouffignac defend their individual titles? Also being played for is the new triples event and considering most teams have several useful players, this competition will most likely be the tightest to call. And we mustn’t forget the three merit awards sponsored by the Leader newspaper. The Porter House (team), Pat Abrams and Simone de Lacy were last season´s winners,
Ian Sleath, Dave O’Brien (licensee), Dave Wright and Frankie ‘W’ of The Pint Depot Kings drown their sorrows.

Division 2 is where its happening this week, the Queens visiting Karl Mallinson´s Ale House hoping to reduce the 4 point deficit and ultimately not to finish bottom. The gap wasn’t reduced but both sides came away with a creditable point. A nasty blister on her non-throwing hand seemed to hamper Lorraine Cox scoring wise but not when she required a double as she took the first leg on D20. Owen Attwood 100 and Luke Yarnold piled on the pressure in the next, but Vi Turner still had the opportunity of taking the leg, unfortunately missing the double. Attwood said thank you very much and pegged out on D15. The Royals had the upper hand in the third Cox 98, Turner 2x80+, before Bernie Whipday rallied with 83 and 125 for Mallinson to take out D17. Debbie Wright and Marie Dunne levelled in a tight leg, inspiring Margaret Griffiths and Rachael Broadhead to some decent scoring, unfortunately Whipday lived up to his name and registered 3x90+ and D3 for the lead once again. Mallinson 100, backed up by some useful scoring from Yarnold was wasted as they floundered on the double, leaving Cox and Turner D9 to level at half time. Attwood enjoyed a tidy leg against Cox in the opening singles scoring 100 and D2 for a slender lead. Wright´s scoring was excellent in the next to the point she forgot to leave 40 or 32 by-passing these numbers to leave herself D1, oh dear! Brian Hobbis was glad to take advantage of the Queen and promptly took the leg. Turner made it 5-4 on D7 the win still a possibility. Yarnold dashed the Royals hopes on D5 to ensure the draw and point. Broadhead faced Mallinson in the fifth single, both scoring ton pluses, the former pegging out first on D3 to leave Whipday facing Dunne for the match or draw. Some great scoring from Dunne set up D8, Whipday countering with a 140 to leave a double himself. It was to be however the visitors who gave the loudest cheer as Dunne secured D8 second arrow for the draw and shared points. Breakaways increased their advantage over the Jaguars with a fine win over Sporting Life. The Misfits got off to a flyer, Leah Chesworth hitting a 98 and D10, well supported by Karl Cooper and John Ashworth 135. The Bears quickly levelled through Mike Smith on D5, who continued his efforts in the third with 2x100, Del Lister nailing D8 for 12. Mike Snow and Mike Douglas D4 took the first pairs, Smith and Alan Strong pairing up for the next, steady scoring followed but the double came from Smith on D16 making it 1-4 despite a 150 from Joe Brown, how on earth did she achieve that? A bottle of champagne for anyone who can work that one out! Cooper, who can play a bit when he puts his mind to it, gained the third pairs for the Misfits on D5 after 2x90+ scores and a ton. 2-4 at half time followed by bangers and mash and 6 singles. Lister didn’t know what to expect from the girl Brown in the opener, previous antics shall remain private but what about that 150! Both scored well, Brown on top with D13. Ivan Jones showed a little bit of class in the second leg with a 95 and 90 out (S20,S20,bull) for 3-5. Strong secured the draw on D5 playing Cooper, importantly gaining the point for a draw. Snow enjoyed the glory of taking the match for his side with 85,81,95 and D2, Smith D16 making it 8 against a spirited Chesworth 85,121. Sonya Cooper gave the Misfits their fourth leg on D17. Junction Jaguars retain second spot after a fine away draw to third place Tavern Drivers. The Taverners quickly found themselves 3-0 up
via Ralph Weatherby and Rick Cox (2 doubles). Pat Schofield 95 and Lisa Ivill D16 reversed the trend, setting up Simone de Lacy 80,85,80 and Tracey Simpson D2, plus Sharon Bugg with Wendy Hayward to take the following two for 3-3 at half time. Weatherby snatched the first for the Drivers, Simpson making it all square on D10 after some impressive scoring. Hayward gave Jaguars the lead after the third singles before Paul Birtwhistle once again made it all square. Schofield played her usual steady game to ensure the draw and point on D2 leaving just the one match for a Jaguar win or draw. De Lacy faced Stu Mitchell opening with 60,60 followed by her first ever 180. Another decent score followed, her opponent nowhere. The usually cool, calm and collected de Lacy couldn’t manage to finish off the 501 leaving Mitchell to nail the double and point for the Tavern. Kestrels find themselves joint second on points after a narrow away victory at Evolution. The hosts were 2-1 up after the triples courtesy of John Williams D8 and Luke Nicholls D17, John Lane replying for the Kestrels on D12. Alan Preston top scoring for Kestrels on 121, Tyron Nash 140 for Evolution. Nicholls increased the home side´s lead on D2, the visitors responding via Gilly Kirby 85 and Preston taking out 51 on D16. Harvey Lane 85 and Chris Miles 95 plus D3 making it all square at half time, against a determined pairing of Ty Nash and Jak Doggatt. A tasty 121 in the opening singles from Nash didn’t deter Gilly Kirby who responded with excellent scores and D2 for a slight match lead. Harvey Lane should have taken out the next with 2x80, 100 but opponent Nicholls D5 made it level scores. A cracker followed Miles v. Jon Peters, the latter giving the hosts the lead on D8. Considering the match to date was a see saw affair, surprisingly the Kestrels took the next three, match and both points due to the efforts of John Lane D16, Terry Kirby D5 and Preston D2, young Doggatt failing to capitalise on his good scoring. In Division 1 Steph Simpson won the match for Junction Jackals with overall scores of 2x100 and 140 but it was veteran Jim Scott who really shone with 5x100. Phil de Lacy supported with 111 and 3x100. Busters replied via Paul Dowington 100,125, Ray Harvey 140,138 and Irene Russell 140,100. A decent 21 ton match between Que Pasa Eagles and the Porters saw a half time draw going eventually the visitors way winning 5 of the 6 singles available. Kevin Wood 2x100,121 having a real tussle with Mike Newberry 100,101 plus D8 and D6. Matt Jackson enjoying a good turn of form winning both his singles and pairs. Good news for the Porters as captain Ray Sanderson is taking all his players to Dubai this week for their mid-winter training camp. Gogarty´s couldn’t improve on a deserved 3 all half time score and could only add one more singles to their tally in a good natured tussle and an atmosphere cordially co-ordinated by the inimitable Simon Williams. Finishing School- Question: How do you finish 65? Answer: Most would select the semi-centre but a miss can leave you in all sorts of trouble. I favour going T19,D4 or as a S19 leaves 46 (S10 or S6) ensuring at least one dart at a double. Question:
How do you finish 72?

ORIHU ELA EXTEND UNBEATEN RUN TO SIX AGAINST POOR TORRY ORIHUELA CF ............5 CD TORREVIEJA .........0 Yesterday evening, Los Arcos Stadium was the venue for the meeting of the two most southernly teams of Division 3 (Valenciana grupo 6) with a great deal at stake for both sides. Earlier in the season Torry had suffered a home defeat to their bitter rivals, and with both clubs pushing for an end of season play off slot, this fixture certainly had an extra edge to it. Orihuela's dire financial situation has been well documented, but following a bad run, they seem to have steadied the ship and are now unbeaten in their last 5 matches. Torry meanwhile, have suffered a torrid time of late, unfortunately experiencing a goal drought which has coincided with some suicidal defending, and resulted in 3 straight defeats. For FC Torrevieja it was sad to see that all three prevailed as the two teams locked horns, their atrocious defending, goal drought and comprehensive defeat. Despite the return of Eddie to the side there was little improvement as the visitors went into the interval three goals behind. But even after their encouraging start, with Obele hitting the post on the quarter hour mark, it quickly became evident that Orihuela were much the sharper outfit, shooting at every opportunity, and with such power. The visitors simply had no answer. It was skipper Flecky that opened the scoring for the home side on 25 mins when his low drive gave Oscar no chance as it rebounded in off the post. But there was a glimmer of hope for the visitors on
the half hour. After Corella had been brought down on the edge of the box Cesar appeared to have levelled the scores from the free kick only to see his effort cleared off the line by Alex Garcia and then to add to their woes, just moments later, Torry’s former striker Tonino beat Cesar with a top class effort, synonymous of the strikes from his glory days with Guardamar, Torry and Cartagena. Piko made it 3-0 just prior to the interval when he squeezed his effort inside the post from an acute angle. The 2nd period was little better although the visitors did confine their hosts to just 2 more goals with Perico and Emilio on the scoresheet in the 52nd and 60th mins respectively. And Torry couldn’t even manage a consolation when a fine low save from Emilio kept out Adrian’s goalbound effort in the final few minutes of the game. Whether Torry will learn from this defeat only time will tell but it now seems as though any thoughts of the end of season playoffs are nought but a distant memory. But there is certainly a great deal of pride still to be played for starting with a 5pm ko next Sunday evening against mid table Levante ‘B’ at the Vicente Garcia. Surely this evenings game against Orihuela is the low point of the season from which it must only get better in the remaining weeks.
CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS After fishing last week in gale force winds and on a very unproductive venue, the Club this week fished round nine of our Winter series of matches on the Eden Canal in Guardamar. There was not a lot of wind but the sky was heavy and very overcast and only one angler- Tom Marshall- caught any fish with 4.972 on the feeder with corn. Even the Cormorants left after 30 minutes, having caught nothing. All being well the next match- the final one in the series- will be fished on the River Segura in Benijofar on the 19th of February. The first match this year in Murcia will be on the 26th of February and I have received the Murcian Federation Cards. The next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 24th of February starting at 7.30pm. Cost is 1 Euro per per-
son and teams to a maximum of 6 are allowed. The next Club meeting on the 1st of March, is our A.G.M which starts at 11.00am. Do not forget on the 17th of March we are holding a St Patrick´s night celebration at the Club House. You can either choose from the bar menu, or a special menu costing 9.50€ per person is available on the night. Please book at the bar. Entertainment will be by Paul Christie. The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is to be found just off the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar. ELCHE OFF BOTTOM AS I’ANSON CHANGES CLUBS Damian Suarez's 30-yard L’Anson is Real Oviedo’s thunderbolt lit up the first English player since Martinez Valero stadium Stan Collymore led the as Elche cruised to a 2-0 line in 2001 win over Rayo Vallecano to climb off the bottom of the Primera Division. With the hosts desperately seeking to end a twomatch losing run, Suarez unleashed a stunning drive from distance to open the scoring in the first half, before Garry Rodrigues capped off the win with a fine second goal late on. The win lifted the Illicitanos off the bottom of the table. Next up is 8th placed Eibar who Elche meet at the tiny Campo de Ipurua join a team where he feels he will get regular playing time. Charlie agreed to join the Asturian side for this evening (Monday). Meanwhile Charlie I’Anson, Elche’s 21 year old the remaining months of the season, where he will English defender, has moved to Stan Collymore’s be reunited with former Elche players David old club, Segunda B side Real Oviedo, after ending Generelo, Franck Omgba and Miguel Linares. HORADADA BOWLS CLUB The week started on Monday with a home game against La Marina Astronauts. However at midway through the game the heavens opened and the match was abandoned. It was resumed on Wednesday and finished with a win by the narrowest of margins, 101 shots to 100.Our seven points were gained by Yvonne Hurlock, Sandra Simpson and John Hurlock 24 - 13, Vince Skeel, Ann Allan and Alan Pugh 26 - 14 with the draw played out by Pete Davis, Fred Trigwell and Mike Douglas. Our thanks go to La Marina for travelling a reasonable
distance twice in a week. On Tuesday we played a Federated fours game at home against Vistabella. Unfortunately I do not have any details of the game but I know we lost. On Friday we made the dreaded trip to La Manga who usually win all their home games [on grass] with full points but lose all their away games by the same margin. Anyway we managed to gain 2 points thanks to the rink of John Goddard, Jack Linehan and Alan Pugh 20 - 19.All other rinks got well beaten.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Around and About our Local Golf Courses The winter months can be quiet with a reduced number of golfing tourists but this doesn't mean that there are not things taking place in and around the local golf courses and I thought that perhaps it was time for a little update of what is going on in and around the local area hence this weeks article. Altorreal have had new owners in the last year and they have made changes in the management team and are making some improvements to the course all which come at a price and green fee prices have increased as a result but the prices still represent good value. Alenda have recently announced increases to both society and public prices to reflect increases in operating cost and improvements to the course, many with the bunkers. Grupoquara group consists of La Finca, Las Ramblas and Villamartin golf courses and they have recently announced increases in prices with effect from 1st June 2015 to reflect increases in operating costs since the crisis. La Marquesa have had a new management team in place for almost one year and they have already changed the pricing strategy offering more green fee deals and are making changes to the course notably with new tees on the 15th and 17th holes. La Peraleja still have problems with 5 fairways as a result of salt contamination and these are improving slowly but the course will only return to pristine condition with a spend of €200k and this depends on the outcome of a court case against a local company who contaminated the well from which they draw their water and until then they will continue to offer very low green fee prices to reflect the course condition still making it well worth a game. Saurines de la Torre is part of the Nike group of courses and while a superb golf course has lacked facilities BUT this has now changed with the completion of a new pro shop and restaurant. Vistabella have parted company with Pablo Riestra after 6 years in charge and we wish him well for the future. Diego is currently trying to fill the void left by Pablo while still performing caddy master duties. The most frequently asked question regarding Vistabella is when will the remaining 7 holes be completed and they have a vision that the €3m spend will result in an 18 hole course by 2018. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. PADDY’S POINT GOLF SOCIETY AT EL VALLE After a few weeks of bitter cold weather and strong winds we were delighted that the weather improved for our monthly competition held at El Valle. The course was in excellent condition but the greens caught a few of us out. After the match we returned to Paddy's Point for refreshments and the prize giving. Many thanks to Hazel and her staff. Before the actual prize giving the Chairman gave his usual colourful speech but on this occasion had a bit of a "rant" about slow play. We have been warned! NTP hole 6 - Myra Coull, NTP hole 9 - Al Tolan, NTP hole 12 Seamus McGearailt. The 2s pot was shared by Seamus McGearailt and Terry Fitzgerald. Longest Drive - Myra Coull, Best Guest - John Walsh 3rd place - Shaun Murphy - 29pts c/b, 2nd place - Terry Fitzgerald 35 pts, 1st place - Janet Bryan - 37 pts We have an addition to our monthly competitions with the first President's Day on Wednesday 25th February at Las Colinas. The list is now full but if you would like to play we do have a reserve list behind the bar at Paddy's Point. For those of you definitely playing please pay in full by Sunday 22nd February.
Our next monthly competition will be for the St Patrick's Day Trophy at Riquelme on Wednesday 11th March followed by the eagerly awaiting Captain's Day on Wednesday 8th April at Las Colinas and the annual presentation night and dinner the same evening at Las Ramblas. VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE - SAURINES DE LA TORRE The Vega Baja Premier Golf League was at the desert style IRM course Saurines del la Torre Golf for the fifth round of fixtures, it was quiet cold but thankfully little wind and bright sunshine, which was not exactly you would expect for a desert course. Despite this there were some decent scores One of the most interesting factors in the Vega Baja League format is that even if a team loses it match it can still earn some points for a resilient performance. This is exactly what happened when Don Cayo G S took league leaders La Manga North, although La Manga came out 3 – 1 victors, simply by scoring more points, albeit one, Dan Cayo earned three bonus points thus depriving La Manga of top spot. Second place Las Ramblas G. S. wanted to put in a good performance to keep the pressure on La Manga North and that’s exactly what they did with a whitewash over EuroToffs along wit it scoring the most points on the day 138, which meant that they leapfrogged La manga and now lead to table by three points, the three bonus points that La Manga let slip, The ever improving Rockets G S entertained Paddy’s Point G.S. and the matches were shared but Rockets were grateful to Alan Moody who was on top form scoring 36 of the 38 points their pairing scored and the best match score on the day and also meant Rockets were the second highest scorers. The other La Manga team RGA that’s Residents Golf Association eased from their bottom spot but beating the normally strong Club25 Serena team 3 – 1 and only fell short of as whitewash by the narrowest of margins just 2 points by the last group. The sixth round of matches is on Friday 7th March, again on the Costa Calida and IRM Nike Golfcourse Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY Last Wednesday the Society travelled inland towards Aspe to play the scenic course of Font De Llop which is set in mountainous terrain. The course was in good condition and the weather conditions were favourable with the wind getting up a bit on the back nine. The turn-out was again a bit low with 19 players contesting an individual Stableford competition. David Johnson had difficulty on the back nine, finding bunker after bunker and his new nickname is “Desert Rat” Dave. The winner with 31 points was Darryll Wright, who gave a running commentary to his playing partners on every shot whether it was good, average or indifferent during his round of golf. In second place was keen rambler David Hayward, who was at home in a walkers paradise, with 29 points and in third place on C/B with 28 points was “iron” Brian Smith. The player who played the most shots and was the winner of the “Roy” was Keith Armstrong. The nearest the Pin winners were Darryll Wright, David Johnson and Brian Airey. The 2´s pot went to big Roy Kavanagh with a birdie on the Par 3 third hole. The football scratchcard winner was our President Victor Dew. After the game the players returned to the society base at the Quesada Country Club for the presentations, a drink or two and a tasty hot and cold buffet kindly provided by mine hosts David & Anita. The next game is on Wednesday 25 February at one of the Ex-Polaris World courses, La Torre which is set in the flat-lands of Murcia inland from the Mar Menor. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

EL RASO AT LAS COLINAS On Fri 13 Feb 2015 24 members and four guests assembled at Las Colinas to play our monthly game. Las Colinas is a tricky course and more so today as the wind was blowing quite hard for the early starters. Most players had an average game however there were exceptions. The nearest the pins results were as follows: Hole 5, Stan Low, Hole 7, David Lewis, Hole 10, Tony Stead, Hole 14, Robin Richards. No-one of course made the very long 17th in one. We had four guests today and the winner with 28 points was Joe Curran. The best front winner today was Dave Lewis with 16 points and the best back winner with 15 points was Tony Stead. Third today with 29 points was Bryan Fenwick and second with a creditable 30 points was Harry Armstrong. The winner today with a substantial 33 points was Dave Nicholls. After the much we retired back to the Olde 9th on Quesada for drinks and eats.

The rain threatened and the wind blew strong for the 35 members and guests but it was pleasing to see that the rain stayed away on the day and the most enjoyed the day’s golf although the scores revealed it was a little tough out there and for sure, the course was not playing to par. The Two’s Pot was a very healthy 28€ and only one member achieved a 2 and this was Hermis Woerdemann at the 13th. All Four of the NTP’s were claimed and the recipients of a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels were G. Thurnstrom, John Eyre, Alex Goslan and Andy Mills who missed an easy 2 to share the pot, just like his rugby team (Wales), he succumbed to the pressure. The Best Guest award went to Nick Terry for his 32 points. The Silver Division were playing Stableford and their Gold counterparts were playing Medal as today was the 3rd of 5 Medal competitions for the TMGS Medal Play Trophy. The Silver crew struggled with the exception of one player and it only
needed a 26 point score from R Matikainen to take 4th place, George Chapman and Sandra Twentyman tied on 27 points and as we use the ‘lower handicap’ system of the Spanish Federation, this meant Sandra was pushed into 3rd place by George to take the runner-up slot. Ian Parkinson’s 32 was easily enough to take top slot of that Division. The Gold Division saw Roger Neilson (who belongs to the Silver Division but elected at the outset to contest for the trophy and play the Medal matches) come home with a nett 80 to take 4th spot. A 3 set of 78’s meant that once again, the lower handicap scoring was used and this meant that Chris Gray took 3rd place; S. Sonenson took the runners-up slot and Steve Higgins the top spot in the Gold Division. Photo: Gold category winners. Our next game, Wednesday 18th February 2015 see’s us at Alenda golf course, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.
ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY VISTABELLA GOLF – 10th FEBRUARY 2015 It was back to this delightful Vistabella Golf course for our second “Home” game of the season was played at local course with the weather looking distinctly bleak, the players were also confident of non Spanish climate, donned in waterproofs beanies and mitts. It was much the same with the players as no one broke Par

By Steve Lawrence. La Finca was the venue for our golf society this week, Thursday 12th February 2015. 28 members and guests turned out for our fortnightly society game of Stableford. The weather was not very kind to us, the rain started on the 1st tee and drizzled for most of the day, and it was chilly! In reality we're getting soft, because if we still lived in the UK it would be just another average day of golf! I'm sorry, but I admit to being a Southern softy, originally coming from Gloucester in the UK. I much prefer to play in shorts and polo shirt rather than three layers and a wet suit on top okay! Anyway summer will be here soon enough without wishing our lives away. Here are today's results:Gold category. 1st G.Benson - 36pts. 2nd G.Pope - 26pts. Best front 9 D.Titchen 12pts.c/b. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Firstly the result of last Friday's Vega Baja League match against EuroToffs was a 4 - 0 win for Las Ramblas which moves us to the top of the Premier Division. We are now 3 pts clear with two matches to play and now have a real prospect of retaining our position as Premier League Champions. On Monday in overcast and windy conditions we teed off with the intention of playing a Waltzer (1-2-3). Nearing the end of the round a light shower resulted in some of the teams heading for the Clubhouse leaving only 2 teams to complete their rounds. As so many chose the sanctuary of the Clubhouse the Committee decided that the days competition would be cancelled which for those who struggled on was not the most welcoming news when they eventually finished their round. On Wednesday we had planned to commence our 6 Card Eclectic Joker Stableford competition but due to several of our members being unable to play due to a bereavement we played our normal weekly stableford competition. Scoring was low due to difficult tee and pin positions and with fewer players it was decided that there would only be

As a result there were a few sore heads and absentees for our game on Friday which was a Change Partners. This turned out to be a very close affair with 3 teams coming in with 85 pts however the winners with 86 pts was the team of Liz Robertson, Brian Townend, Allen and Joyce McClusky.
