U K reintroduces quarantine for travelers from Spain

D

espite the fact that Britain continues to record a higher number of coronavirus cases and deaths than Spain, fierce criticism of the British government’s handling of the crisis has led the Boris Johnson

administration to remove Spain from a list of countries exempt from quarantine measures in response to the rising number of coronavirus cases recorded in Catalonia, Aragón and Murcia. The decision is simply another

nail in the coffin of the Spanish tourism industry and now means that from midnight on July 25, all travellers returning to the UK from Spain will have to quarantine for 14 days. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to

£1,000. The devolved administrations all took the same decision, so travellers arriving from Spain into all parts of the UK will need to self-isolate. Continued on Page 2

In Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted, “Having reviewed the latest data earlier today, the Scottish government is also reimposing 14-day quarantine for travellers returning from Spain. This reinforces the point that these matters are subject to change at short notice and so my advice is to be cautious about non-essential foreign travel.”

The FCO is advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain – this does not cover the Canary Islands or the Balearic Islands because travel advice is based on the risk to the individual traveller and COVID-19 infection rates are lower there than mainland Spain. But people will still need to self-isolate when returning from anywhere in Spain including the Canary and Balearic Islands, because self-isolation arrangements are put in place on the basis of risk to the UK as a whole. However, in a move to protect it’s own tourist industry the Government of the Balearic Islands has said that it “is working to establish the basis for a safe air corridor with the United Kingdom,” pointing out that the Balearic Islands have a cumulative incidence in the last 14 days of 8 diagnosed cases of coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 14.1 in the United Kingdom or a Spanish average of 37.9.

and we have taken this decision to limit any potential spread to the UK.”

On the Costa Blanca the move was met with disbelief with the president of the Hoteliers Association, Hosbec, Toni Mayor, describing the news as a ‘blow’, since “we had good feelings for the next few weeks, with reservations that were growing and although they were far from what would be normal at this time of year, we expected that they were normalizing for the month of September and October”. Many hotels and tourist related businesses across the region were scheduled to re-open in the coming days, in anticipation of anticipated growth in the number of British tourists arriving on the Costa Blanca, but they will now have to rethink their decisions in light of the British announcement. A British government spokesperson said: “The Joint Biosecurity Centre, together with Public Health England, have updated their coronavirus assessments of Spain based on the latest data. As a result, Spain has been removed from the lists of countries from which passengers arriving in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are exempted from the need to self-isolate.” “Protecting public health is our absolute priority

The Health authorities in Spain have warned that a second wave of coronavirus cases could be imminent as the government of Catalonia has closed all nightclubs and late-night bars in the region for the next two weeks and virtually all communities have introduced the mandatory wearing of face masks. Cases of the virus have been on the rise again in recent weeks in Spain, prompting concern in several European countries with France currently threatening to close its border with Catalonia. On Friday Norway said it will re-impose a 10day quarantine requirement for people arriving from Spain from Saturday, while France advised people not to travel to the Spanish region of Catalonia. On Sunday morning queues of home-bound Britons reacted with anger and confusion as they prepared to board a plane from Madrid. Emily Harrison, from Essex, said: ‘It’s really bad because it’s just come all of a sudden, it’s not given very much time to prepare so everyone is now panicking. Almost 40 countries have reported record single-day increases in coronavirus infections, as the World Health Organisation warns there is no return to the ‘old normal’. The rate of cases has also been rapidly increasing in the United States, Brazil, India, Japan and Australia, among others.

Guardamar Castle reopens its doors to the public

The old walled city and castle reopens its doors with guided tours after an investment of one million euros

buried around the fourteenth century even though researchers have evidence that there was no burial site in use at the time.

The investment has served to improve accessibility, reinforce structures and carry out archaeological excavations that have brought to light many aspects of the 13th century, ceramic pieces and a dismembered body highlighting the bloody battles that were fought in and around the strategic and coveted hill.

"The body was thrown into a hole between the houses and the wall. His head and leg had been cut off and he had suffered numerous blows.

Touring one of the most important heritage sites in Guardamar del Segura and discovering the secrets that held by centuries of history is now easier and far more accessible than before. The hill that housed the old walled city and the castle of the town has been remodelled to enable tourist visits after the completion of archaeological research and reconstruction of part of the wall. It is the most important restoration of all those to date and has allowed archaeologists to uncover elements that have remained hidden for hundreds of years on the edges of the fortress. One of the most striking has been the discovery of a body that had its head and one of its legs amputated. Everything indicates that it was

The skeleton was found amongst remains from the thirteenth century and under a street dating from the fifteenth century, so it is probably from the fourteenth century," explains the head of the municipal archaeological museum and cultural conservator, Antonio Parres. He added that the body could be one of the victims of the bloody confrontations between Pedro I of Castilla and Pedro IV of Aragón, during the War of the Two Pedros. "It seems that there was no burial as such. They just threw sand over him above which they subsequently built a street”. The skeletal remains are now being analysed by the researcher María Paz de Miguel Ibáñez, forensic archaeologist linked to the University of Alicante, who will try to date the remains more precisely and find answers to questions that have yet to be resolved. The improvements to the site, with its adaptation to enable guided tours and archaeological excavation, has seen an investment of one million euros, contributed by the municipality and the FEDER program through the Generalitat. The work in the protected area, a Site of Cultural Interest, is now practically finished and already greeting the first tourists.

When could the dreaded second wave of coronavirus occur?

They also say that as long as the currently existing security measures, such as the mandatory use of a mask or social distancing, are not relaxed and, at the same time, existing outbreaks are controlled, it will not be necessary to apply additional control mechanisms such as tests or mandatory quarantine.

Researchers from the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche are saying that based on a report compiled by using Data Science techniques, in the event that outbreaks are not controlled, both those that currently exist and the new ones that are expected to arise, or in case the people neglect their safety measures, a second wave of the pandemic could be triggered in mid to late August. "The trigger for the first wave of the pandemic was the arrival of people into the community from other parts of Spain, due to the closure of schools and

Patrolling the beach at a trot The Local Police of La Vila Joiosa have become the first in the province to create a horseback unit. The detachment is made up of two agents and two horses that were out for the first time last weekend where they patrolled the central beach "A policeman on horseback is more of a spectacle and provides a greater sense of security to public," according to Juan Miguel Sandoval, a member of the unit. This is a project proposed by Sandoval himself proposed to the Chief of Police, José Álvarez Ibáñez , the advantages of having police officers on horseback in the municipality, which are multiple, covering functional, psychological and even promotional aspects as could be seen by from the dozens of people wishing to have their photographs taken with the officers and their mounts.. Sandoval says that being on horseback allows officers to have a higher angle of view, which widens their field of vision and allows them to monitor far more of an area. He adds that the horse also allows them to travel greater distances in much less time than they would cover on foot, so they can repeatedly visit many of the areas.

communities and countries within the Schengen area, the technical report answers different questions taking into account parameters such as the percentage of people who could get infected from each autonomous community, as well as from each country. They also estimate the number of active infected, again in each community and country as well as the total of undetected cases. From this data, they develop different tourist influx scenarios for which they predict the development of the pandemic in the Valencian Community during the months of July and August. The report was compiled by José Luis Sainz-Pardo, José Vicente Segura and José Valero, belonging to the University Research Institute 'Operational Research Center' (CIO).

Mar Menor’s deserted summer beaches Not even the people who own second properties in the area are spending time in the area as water pollution and coronavirus fears are prompting them to avoid this oncepopular saltwater lagoon on Mediterranean. While many other of Murcia’s beaches fill up with visitors, the Mar Menor has been given a wide berth because of the saltwater lagoon’s contaminated state, which was exacerbated by torrential rains last Autumn that yielded shocking images of hundreds of dying fish. Coronavirus concerns have done the rest as, this summer, both tourists and holiday-home owners are staying away.

GM to introduce 12 new electric vehicles by 2023

Driving the future How the global pandemic has changed transport forever as new survey reveals the impact of COVID-19 on transport and vehicle use 25% of drivers expect to use their car less after lockdown

Tesla's rival Xpeng raises $500mn to finance its Series C+

40% of motorbike users in large cities will use their vehicles more 60% of commuters in large cities will rethink their public transport use

T

he way society views and uses public transport and personal vehicles has been altered drastically, with a dramatic fall in car use for rural areas and a major rise in the use of two-wheel transport, according to the results of a new survey published today. With many commuters shunning the prospect of rail travel and season tickets, a marked reduction in road use outside cities and a shift towards remote working and home shopping, an overhaul of how the UK builds and manages transport and public mobility will be required. The survey’s results show why investment in road, rail and new types of infrastructure will need to evolve to meet a change in priorities for the population, affecting car and technology manufacturers, as well as local authorities and central government. Conducted by consumer and market insight agency 7th Sense Research UK, the survey shows the extent to which the public’s perception of transport has shifted over the last 12 months.

General Motors released a concept look of their 12 new upcoming electric models for nearly all of its brands which include Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet and Buick. In total, they are planning to deliver 20 Electric vehicles by 2023. All of these vehicles will utilize GM'S new modular EV architecture called Ultium which can improve their range up to 400 miles and can reach 0-60 km in 3 seconds.

Download the first report now at: info.loopagency.co.uk/automotive-industry-report-2020 Fergus McVey, 7th Sense Research UK Ltd. CEO, explained: “Major change should come as no surprise – even before lockdown – however, we found some surprising results which herald much deeper, longterm causes and effects than just COVID-19. From the inevitable shortfall in funding that rail operators will face due to a drastic fall in ticket sales, through to the willingness of Gen-Z to a look for alternative solutions, like it or not we are in the midst of a transport revolution.” Published by advanced automotive communication agency loop, Driving the Future – #01 Transport Use is the first of three exclusive reports based on interviews with 3,000 transport users in the UK throughout June 2020.

This new survey is the follow-up to a study conducted in the same period last year, and coincides with the impact of the global pandemic. The results provide key insight to the longer-term impact of COVID-19 on mobility, car ownership and the perception of transport going forward. Available as three exclusive reports in July and August, the results of the survey provide clear messages for business working in the automotive and related sectors, and will prove invaluable for those developing new products and service, marketing and engaging with an audience and positioning a brand. loop will be publishing the exclusive reports on the survey for free.

Sagi, who was Artistic Director of the Royal Theatre of Madrid and the Arriaga Theater of Bilbao, also said that these are difficult times for culture, not only from an economic point of view, but due to the fact that the artistes have a need to see an audience in front of them.

T

he 66th edition of the International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition was brought to a close in Torrevieja on Saturday and may just prove to be one of the most difficult to forget.

The Contest is now heading towards 2021 with the commitment that the Eras de la Sal will never be silent and will forever keep alive that message of peace from Torrevieja to the world.

It is already engraved in History, first, by the fact that it was even held, and also by the high level of performances and the meticulous compliance by the public and all those otherwise involved with the hygienic-sanitary measures required by current COVID19 regulations. This was highlighted by the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, who also thanked all of those who had sent the many messages of support received in recent days from personalities involved in culture and music all of whom praised the city of Torrevieja for having had the courage to hold such a significant event, which would help to launch a message of hope in the future recovery. The president of the Board of Trustees of Habaneras also thanked all of the people who had been involved in the organisation, especially the Technical Committee and expressed his wish that in 2021 the Contest could be held as planned, and even with some improvements. Together with Vice President José Antonio Quesada, at the

venue entrance he then unveiled the poster that will be used to publicise the 2021 event, from July 18 to 24. The fourth and final evening of this Contest focused on time. A selection of 24 musicians from the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra, conducted by José Francisco Sánchez, lit up the Habanera genre, thanks to the warmth of the voices of four local performers, the sopranos Cora Sánchez and Concepción Pérez -Boj and tenors Francisco Moreno and Alberto Ballesta.

A repertoire with works including ‘El Ausente’, ‘La Llamada’, ‘Con un beso’ , ‘Vivo sin ti’ and ‘Mi querida Torrevieja, dazzled the public gathered at Eras de la Sal. This concluded a Contest where the variety has been the main theme of the event: one young choir, one mixed and one female, have all been heard, while the soloists included, sopranos, tenor and baritone, in addition to the presence on the final evening of the Symphony Orchestra. The ones that even Specsavers couldn’t save …! It is only fair to warn those of you with a clean record that anyone proceeding past the next full stop will become a ‘receiver’. A receiver is a person who knowingly buys or accepts stolen goods. Other people wrote this week’s column and like Johnny Cash with the car, I stole it ‘one piece at a time’. This puts you on the horns of a dilemma - because the fact that this article isn’t all my own handiwork suggests it could be worth reading this week. Make up your own mind now – or once again I’ll be gone ahead on my own. Actually those of you still with us have a laugh or two in store, because I am going to tell you about shop, restaurant and other poster messages that got a wee bit twisted in the telling. We will start off with a couple of nice clean ones – just to get you in on the swing of the thing. Many years ago, during a holiday in Spain, Mrs Youcantbeserious and I came across the following on a sandwich board: ‘Free glass of wine with all people eaten today’. Maybe people were being eaten in that restaurant, but certainly they weren’t going to be replaced in the cocktail lounge in Norway which gave clear instructions that ‘Ladies are requested not to have children in the bar’! For the bad-minded among you, some real notices are so outrageous that they should not be reproduced in a decent newspaper like this one; but you must remember that they were written in all innocence by a person who made a mistake, or very often had a limited knowledge of the English language. You will have to keep on reading for the best ones!

A Nairobi restaurant advised that; ‘Customers who find our waitresses rude, ought to see the manager’ – while a dry-cleaners in Bangkok suggested, ‘Drop your trousers here for best results’! Another couple of clean ones – before we get into some adult content! From Mombasa, Nairobi again; ‘Take notice that when this notice is underwater, this road is impassable.’ Or the message in Kencom, which asked; ‘Are you an adult that cannot read? If so, we can help’. A restaurant somewhere carried the good news; ‘Open seven days a week and weekends’, and a cemetery warned that ‘Persons are prohibited from picking flowers from any but their own graves’! And so to a few real eye-brow raisers – well worth complaining to the editor about! The following item is included in a Tokyo hotel’s list of rules and regulations. ‘Guests are requested not to smoke, or do other disgusting behaviours in bed’! Again in Tokyo, a bar advertised; ‘Special cocktails for the ladies with nuts.’ Another Jap gem is where a hotel informs its guests; ‘You are invited to take advantage of the chambermaid’! Obviously one needs to be of one’s best behaviour when entering a temple, so see if you can figure out this rule in a Bangkok temple. ‘It is forbidden to enter a woman, even a foreigner, if dressed as a man.’ If you find that one difficult to fathom; don’t even bother with this one, posted in Germany’s Black Forest: ‘It is strictly forbidden on our Black Forest Camping Site, that people of a different sex, for instance men and women, live together in one tent, unless they are married with each other for that purpose …’! From here on in we present some scrapings of the barrel of what this column is all about. Those of you who “never read his s***e anyway”, can alight at this full stop. This notice appeared, word for word, in an Abu Dhabi souk shop window: ‘If the front is closed, please enter through my backside …’ Meanwhile,

a doctor’s surgery in Rome appears to have made the greatest ever breakthrough in medical science. The brass plate states boldly; ‘Specialist in women and other diseases.’! (No, Pet … I didn’t make that one up … I swear!) The menu in a Swiss restaurant gives you ample warning that, ‘our wines leave you nothing to hope for’ – and an advertisement for donkey rides in Thailand asks; ‘Would you like a ride on your own ass?’ Any reader who has stayed the distance thus far deserves to finish up with one nice clean and easily understand shop notice. A long time ago, there was a publican by the name of Jim Burke in Delvin. Jim wrote this: ‘My beer is good – my measure just; forgive me please, I cannot trust: I have trusted many – to my sorrow; so pay today,

Pilar de la Horadada council settles claim for La Paloma The La Paloma building, a project that started 19 years ago and was later abandoned. The municipality had to abandon the cultural centre project started in 2001 after investing 3.6 million. Pilar de la Horadada will pay 3 million euros to the builder of the controversial cultural centre "La Paloma". It is an agreement that will save the municipality 1.2 million euros, according to the PP government team, as the company will now withdraw from a second judicial proceeding it had opened against the City Council.

The municipality has spent 3.6 million euros on La Paloma cultural centre from 2001, including the demolition of part of the structure that was in danger of collapse and now, having agreed a final settlement of a further 3 million the total loss on the project to the council will be 6.6 million euro.

The Council will now pay Urdemasa and Terrestrial Infrastructure three million euros, with a first payment in September, and the second, with costs and interest in December.

Now, the PP council is waiting for the conclusions of a feasibility study on the current building to assess what it does next with the infrastructure: whether it is completely demolished it or if it can be modified, allowing it to be put to public use, which would require a new project and another investment, although not as a cultural centre which is currently the subject of an ambitious new project as a “cultural district,” planned on an initial 11,000-squaremeter plot located between la avenida Reina Sofía, and la avenida de Lo Alegre, a few metres from the N-332, on a main access road into the municipality.

Mayor José María Pérez Sánchez said that he considers that with this agreement the "controversial judicial matter has now been settled after 19 years, and that it will save the Pilareños 1.2 million euros."

The new centre will comprise of 3 separate buildings which will include a 600 seat auditorium, a library, museum with multi-purpose classrooms and a music conservatory. There will also be green recreation areas and a cafeteria.

The agreement involves paying less but paying earlier. Instead of paying 4.2 million euros, if the second legal claim is upheld, a payment of 3 million will be made this year.

Twenty beaches become smoke free The province has declared 20 tobacco-free beaches around El Campello, with all its coastline, and the coves of Elche and Dénia. The province of Alicante has said that it intends to ban smoking on all it’s beaches with the first announcement made at the weekend prohibiting smoking on 20 coves and beaches in four different municipalities, where it is advisable not to smoke. They say that the covid-19 crisis has made the smoke-free beaches project, promoted by the Generalitat last year, even more necessary now, due to the high risk of contagion from cigarette butts and the unknowns about the virus transmission through smoke. El Campello, Elche, Dénia and Finestrat have now introduced the measure that many hope will lead to a total ban on smoking on all beaches within the next few years. The unpleasant image of seeing cigarette butts buried in the sand or inhaling the smoke of a neighbour while sunbathing seems to have its days numbered ... although the province is late in its arrival for this environmental and sanitary trend. Galicia, for example, stands out; an area that has been promoting free beaches without smoke since 2012, but as a recommendation, and where there are already 162 coastal and river beaches taking part in the program, which gives them more credibility as them a tourist attraction and an additional environmental value. In the Valencian Community there are already 22

smoke-free coves in six different municipalities. The first introduced the measure last year Oropesa (Castellón), and to this informative and awareness initiative promoted by the Ministry of Health and the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, El Campello, Elche and Dénia have all joined this year, as well as Cullera in Valencia.

Benidorm, Altea, l'Alfàs say that they are not considering it for now.

In addition, Finestrat has gone even further with its anti-smoking campaign within its plan to deal with covid-19 in La Cala where it has included in the battery of measures to prevent contagion including a smoking ban under threat of economic sanctions. The El Campello case is significant. The municipality was already a pioneer with the introduction of canine beaches in the Valencian Community in 2013, which have now spread throughout the province. And now it is the first in the province to join this campaign announced by the Generalitat , and not with a single beach, but with its entire coastline. Twentythree kilometers of coastline where there are 17 coves and beaches, including the popular Muchavista and Carrerlamar beaches. An initiative that started with a motion from Compromís and that has now been developed by the Department of Beaches, under the direction of the mayor Julio Oca (Cs). The mayor said that “We have to take care of our natural environment, cigarette butts take 10 years

to disappear from the sand and they are understood to be a very important means of transmission of the coronavirus. We are very proud to be the municipality that has the longest stretch of coastline that free of smoke and to be pioneers in this initiative”. According to the Ministry of Health, this project is motivated by the fact that many municipalities want to create healthy spaces for residents, promoting environments to increase people's health and to preserve the health of the Community. Elche approved the measure a few days ago adding Carabassí beach to the network, and it is expected that this week flags and signs will be installed to identify it as a smoke-free beach. Dénia was the most recent municipality to join the

scheme. Last Thursday the Autonomous Secretary of Public Health, Isaura Navarro, visited the town to make the addition of the Marge Roig beach official: Navarro said that the objective is "to promote healthy attitudes and habits through an environment that is respectful to both people and to the environment”. Alicante has studied but ruled out the measure for the time being, and towns such as Benidorm, Altea, l'Alfàs say that they are not considering it for now. In the Vega Baja, initiatives of this type have not been introduced either, although it seems only a matter of time before their beaches also become areas that are finally free of smoke and cigarette ends.

Thousands flock to beaches as temperatures soar By Andrew Atkinson

Thousands of beachgoers flocked to the Costa Blanca south beaches of Torrevieja as temperatures hit 30 degrees in Spain.

Mandatory masks have to be worn in public areas where you cannot keep between one and a half, to two metres distance.

At times the beach was full at Playa del Cura as the summer holiday season hots up with sunbathing numbers continue to increase following the three month coronavirus lockdown in March, with queues forming in designated entry areas.

On beaches users must wear masks until they have settled onto the plot and set up their chairs and sunbeds. They must also be worn when walking along the security perimeter and as they enter and leave the beach.

The Spanish Government has put in place strict measures of protocol, with bathing areas lined-out on beaches and monitors in place to make sure health and safety guidelines are adhered to.

On beaches all bathing areas are marked out under coronavirus safety guidelines and signs are in place with the relevant coronavirus guidelines.

Torrevieja council have also employed personnel to disinfect areas, when people arrive and depart from beaches. Bathers and swimmers were adhering health and safety guidelines on Torrevieja playa del Cura beaches that initially reopened in June, following the easing of COVID-19 lockdown. Three people have sadly died after being caught up in dangerous riptides at La Mata beach, Torrevieja, after entering the Mediterranean Sea, despite the flying of red no entry flags. On Thursday the local police sanctioned several users who failed to comply with the instructions of the lifeguards, even forcing one bather to get out of the water.

Lifeguards are also employed at Torrevieja beaches, between 11am-7pm, as holidaymakers head to bask in Spain. Resident Spanish, including thousands of Madridians who arrive on the Costa Blanca south each summer for their annual monthly vacations, together with many other European nationals, have seen business growth in hotels, bars and restaurants, having been a ghost town in June. In Murcia two beaches on the Mar Menor were deemed unsafe for bathing, due to the poor water quality. Results from tests carried out proved to be 'technically suitable' for bathing on beaches - with the exceptions of Estrella de Mar and Los Urrutias, that lead to people opting to use other beaches.

Gunman disarmed in Los Alcázares Just days after arresting a man who threatened members of the public with an axe, with an agent injured in the process, the Los Alcázares Local Police were required to disarm a man who was threatening pedestrians with a gun and knife. Crew rescued from grounded boat close to San Pedro A beach surveillance and rescue team were called to assist 14 occupants of a boat that ran aground in the waters of San Pedro del Pinatar, in front of El Mojón beach, on Sunday night, one of whom had to receive medical care for anxiety attacks. The emergency services received a call from the skipper of the boat late at night, saying that the boat had run aground (a 14-meter-long motorboat sailing from La Manga to the port of San Pedro), that the boat had a leak and requesting the rescue of the occupants, 14 people in total. The Emergency and Civil Protection Service from San Pedro del Pinatar attended the incident, transporting the crew of the damaged boat (7 women, 5 men and 2 children) to the beach, from where they were taken to the San Pedro del Pinatar marina.

Mar Menor remains Coronavirus free According to Tomás Fernández, the Chief Executive of the Area VIII of Mar Menor Health, the arrival of tourists has not yet generated the feared regrowth effect of coronavirus. The Mar Menor region remains free of new cases of COVID-19, with only one case confirmed in Torre Pacheco, which originated from a meeting with a relative from another community and who is now isolated and controlled. Fernández said that “the Mar Menor and Cartagena are spared for the moment from re growths like the ones we see in Murcia, because people are generally well behaved and respecting the rules"

How do you fall asleep quickly

PM Pedro Sanchez says he is "95% satisfied" with EU's recovery fund

Falling Asleep

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Tuesday that he is 95% satisfied with the coronavirus recovery fund that EU leaders have agreed upon.

Follow a ritual of going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time every day. It helps you fall asleep faster and better.

Spain, one of the countries worst-hit by the coronavirus crisis, will receive €140bn from the fund and half of it will be in grants. The funds will be used to rebuild the country's economy, invest in its digital transformation and education, Sanchez said.

Going to sleep may sound like a simple business, but for many people getting a good night’s sleep or even falling asleep can be quite a task. Some habits can help you sleep better; however, if you have been sleepless for days, you may need medical help as it might be a complex sleep disorder.

Spain and Italy, worst-hit by the pandemic, will be the main beneficiaries of the fund.

60% of the new coronavirus cases reported are asymptomatic

Avoid the following to sleep better: Stress Caffeine (coffee, dark tea, soda, energy drinks, and other caffeine-containing beverages) Nicotine (cigarettes and chewing tobacco) Alcohol Heavy dinner that’s rich in fats and spices To fall asleep faster Practice a regular schedule: Follow a ritual of going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time every day. It helps you fall asleep faster and better. Make yourself relaxed before bedtime: Remember that sleep is a normal biological process and you don’t need to stress yourself by being anxious about falling asleep. Make yourself calm by doing yoga or meditation, taking a warm shower, or listening to soothing music. Whatever relaxes you, make it a part of your bedtime ritual. Avoid alcohol and caffeine before bedtime. Avoid exercising right before bedtime. Turn off all screens: Do not use a mobile phone, laptops or watch TV while you are in bed. Do not force yourself to sleep: If despite the above-mentioned habits, you find yourself awake for more than 10 minutes in bed, get out of bed, and sit in a chair until you are sleepy.

soft music, and dim lighting. Wear clean and comfortable clothes before going to bed. Avoid naps if possible: While napping is a way to make up for lost sleep, taking naps decreases the amount of sleep one needs the next night. This may cause sleep fragmentation and difficulty falling asleep. What foods make you sleepy? Consuming certain foods and beverages can help you fall asleep faster. Foods and drinks that will help you get a restful sleep at night include: Foods rich in tryptophan: Tryptophan is a natural sleep-promoting substance. Tryptophan rich foods include milk, bananas, nuts, honey, chicken, turkey, and eggs. Complex carbs: Whole grains, in contrast with refined foods, help you sleep faster and better. Recommended bedtime snacks include popcorn, oatmeal or whole wheat crackers. To enhance the taste, add some nut butter to these snacks. Fish: Fish is rich in vitamin B6. The vitamin makes melatonin in the body which is triggered by being in the dark. Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate the sleep/wake cycle. chamomile or peppermint tea, or just plain warm water. The concoction relaxes your mind. Honey lowers the level of orexin, a chemical found in the body that makes you more alert and facilitates falling asleep. Fruits: Fruits like tart cherries, bananas, pineapple, and oranges reduce the oxidative stress in the body and give a boost to your sleep hormones making you sleep faster and wake up less frequently at night. Having two kiwis before bed has been found to increase the sleep duration by an hour over a month, in people who chronically suffer from a lack of sleep. How many hours of sleep are enough? The amount of sleep needed depends on many factors, one of which is the person’s age. The generally recommended hours of sleep are: Infants (ages zero to three months): 14 to17 hours a day. Infants (ages four to 11 months): 12 to 15 hours a day. Toddlers (ages one to two years): 11 to 14 hours a day. Pre-school children (ages three to five years): 10 to 13 hours a day. School-age children (ages six to 13 years): nine to 11 hours a day. Teenagers (ages 14 to 17 years): eight to 10 hours each day. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a day. Older adults (ages 65 and above) need seven to eight hours of sleep each day. Women in the first three months of pregnancy often need more hours of sleep than usual.

Competition winner Julia

Firstly a big thank to Captain Dave Hadaway and Competition Secretary, Don Fowkes for sorting out the Pairs League. It made a very enjoyable Friday morning. Our two pairs were John Rae and Dave McGaw versus Lesley and Dave Joynes. John and Dave started off quickly and built up a lead. Dave was leading very well. In fact my hands were soar from clapping him. The Joynes, fairly new to the game of bowls were showing they have learnt quickly and pulled back on Dave and John's lead. The crowd clapped and cheered for the good standard of bowls

being produced. You could see that King Len and Queen Sue were enjoying themselves watching from the Royal Box. The more experienced pair pulled ahead again in the latter part of the Final but give them their due Lesley and Dave came back at them but couldn't quite manage it. So our

Winners were Dave McGaw and John Rae, finishing six shots clear. Looks like it be, good for the Winter League as it is playing Pairs this coming season. If you wish to play in the Winter League, can you please let Dave Hadaway know asap.

In the former and latter the winners, Norman McBride (38 points) and Paul Thompson (42) respectively, romped home. In Silver Captain Phil de Lacy (40) pipped Ivan Hanak (38). All four players will be seeing their handicaps adjusted downwards, two of them quite significantly. This week’s special mention goes to Captain Phil and David Rowe, both having been in the prizes for the last three weeks. Clearly men in form and able to play the very different courses of Roda, El Plantio and Vistabella. Finally, congratulations to the Greenkeeper and his team for providing a course in very good condition and nicely set up for society

Taking the Gold Division with 36 points was John Brastock, with Barry Thoroughgood and Alan Janes close on his heels with 35 points each.

23rd July 2020 - It was round two of the La Marina Society Summer Cup, held at the Vistabella Golf course. The course with its challenging greens was no match for today's members and guests as most of them came into the clubhouse with good scores. A most enjoyable days golfing was had by all.

It seems post lockdown apprehensions may be starting to dissipate and the drug that is golf is winning. Or have more members flown back in to the region since flight availability increased?

Concerning the day’s golf, a strong wind that suddenly came out of nowhere from around 10.30 and refused to relent made things a bit tricky. It clearly affected the higher handicappers in Bronze Category more than those in Silver and Gold.

San Miguel Golf Society’s monthly Spanish Insurance and Property Shop sponsored visit (when lockdown allows) to Vistabella saw 34 members and one guest turn out, the second week in a row that well in access of thirty players have made it.

Whatever reason may be behind the increasing numbers, there is a confidence that playing golf, and meeting at the 19th afterwards, in this case a new on-course Vistabella 19th, is low-risk. Let’s hope that situation prevails as new COVID-19 outbreaks occur in both Valencia and Murcia Comunidades. None of us would wish to see another Estado de Alarma having to be imposed, and once again lose the chance of playing our beloved pastime.

Cartagena promoted to Segunda after penalty shootout The Segunda B final was played last Monday, at La Rosaleda in Malaga, where Group 4 champions, Cartagena, were looking for a return to the elite world of professional football in Spain, after eight seasons in the bronze division. Jiménez makes history on European Tour Miguel Ángel Jiménez made history last week when he equalled Sam Torrance’s record for appearances on the European Tour with his 706th start at the Betfred British Masters. Ronnie O’Sullivan who threatened to pull out of the 2020 World Snooker Championship, due to spectators being allowed at The Crucible amid COVID-19, has revealed he could carry on until aged 60.

Snooker: World championship O'Sullivan talk of retirement at 60 and Trump out to entertain

The Government announced that the world championship will be one of four test events as they look to ease live audiences back into sport, with spectators present. Rocket Ronnie, who told me over a decade ago that he'd rather be potting plants, than balls, had questioned the presence of spectators due to the coronavirus, saying he 'wouldn’t feel good about that'.

Football, cricket and snooker will see a limited number of spectators return to venues, after behind closed doors fixtures returning in June, amid the coronavirus pandemic lockdown in mid-March. O'Sullivan, who will be playing in the world championship, says he could remain on the Green baize circuit until possibly aged 60, citing a lack of competition and players coming through the ranks.

Barcelona boss Quique Setien will remain in charge for the Champions League matches but is not certain of his position beyond that.

"I'm a granddad," said O'Sullivan, who spends little time practising, yet still winning tournaments. The 2020 world championship delayed from April, due to the coronavirus crisis, will start on July 31 in Sheffield. Defending champion Judd Trump will play his first round match on July 31, with Kyren Wilson, Mark Wiliams, Stuart Bingham and Ding Junui also playing on the opening day. O’Sullivan begins his quest on 2 August and plays to completion on 3

Virus dashes Elche playoff hopes

Segunda game suspended after coronavirus outbreak brings chaos to LaLiga An outbreak of coronavirus among players of Spanish second-division club Fuenlabrada has caused chaos within Spanish football. The positive results were announced just hours before Monday's final game of the season, between Deportivo La Coruña and Fuenlabrada, prompting the suspension of the game, which will have a direct influence on the promotion play offs from Segunda to LaLiga.

shows the importance of strict compliance with the rules and safety and hygiene measures determined by authorities to prevent the spread of COVID19.” Rayo Vallecano had been in a similar position and its chances of promotion depended in part on Fuenlabrada's result, and they have now threatened legal action against the decision not to postpone all matches.

The match was postponed after a number of Fuenlabrada players tested positive. The entire final round was at risk of being postponed but all of the other matches, which were scheduled to be played at the same time, went on as scheduled.

Deportivo also said they will consider legal options to defend their interests. They said in a statement that the club complied with all health and security measures and was ready to play the match.

Some clubs said the decision to suspend only one game instead of the entire round affected the outcome of the competition because many teams depended on the result of the DeportivoFuenlabrada match.

The league — along with the Spanish soccer federation and the nation’s sports council — said the decision not to reschedule all matches was “the solution that best protected the health of players and the overall integrity of the competition.”

Elche, for example, who are currently holding on to the last playoff spot, will only keep it if Fuenlabrada loses to Deportivo who, at the time were still fighting for points to avoid relegation. Now however, following Mondays fixtures, results went against them and confirmed their relegation so they will have nothing to play for when the game is rescheduled.

Deportivo coach Fernando Vázquez said his team's rivals benefited by being able to play their games.

“Obviously a decision has been made that directly affects the integrity of the competition and we believe that it was not fair,” Elche said in a statement. “A situation like the one experienced today

“They have an advantage because they don't have the pressure of our result,” Vázquez told Movistar. “Why couldn't we play all at the same time, without anybody having a competitive advantage?” Deportivo, the 2000 Spanish league champion, were relegated to the tercera, third division, for only the second time in club history. The first time was in the 1980-81 season. No other league champions have dropped to the third division since Real Betis in 1947.

Fuenlabrada, based just south of Madrid, are trying to reach the top flight for the first time. The promotion playoffs, which were expected to begin on Thursday, will also have to be delayed. There was no date set for a new game between Deportivo and Fuenlabrada. The Spanish league did not say how many Fuenlabrada players or club members tested positive.

The club said no one who tested positive showed symptoms of the disease. Spanish media said Fuenlabrada was expected to be held in confinement until everyone tested negative again. In the meantime Elche has written an eight page letter to both LaLiga and the RFEF with their complaints and arguments as to why they should retain the playoff place that they won on Monday night.
