COSTA BLANCA TURNS GREEN AND GOLD Some of the most iconic sights in the world were glowing green on Friday, in tribute to their Irish communities, on the occasion of yet another glorious celebration of St Patrick's Day. In the run-up on the Costa Blanca, we were all worrying about the weather, particularly

after the heavy rains during the early part of the week, and even though the day started out drab and overcast, our concerns came to nought as, once again, bright skies greeted the area’s Irish Population who came out in their thousands to provide the very best of Irish culture. There was a parade as colourful as any previous and a packed programme of great entertainment to while away the afternoon and evening along the packed Cabo Roig strip.

It promised to be the biggest and the best, and it didn´t disappoint as residents and visitors from far and wide stood shoulder to shoulder in celebration of the Irish Patron Saint. The streets of Cabo Roig were flooded with colour, when, following the mandatory speeches from organisers and politicians, over 30 custom motorcycles and classic cars did their lap of honour before the Torrevieja pipes and drums stepped off in file. They were accompanied by instruments and bands of all possible types and from many different nations Parade Grand Marshall Eamon Scanlon, the Teachta Dála for the Sligo–Leitrim constituency, was at the head of the Parade. He was joined by fellow politician Paudge Connolly from County Monaghan along with Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, the deputy mayor, Rafael Almagro, and Councillors Sofia Alvarez and Luisa Bone. They were followed by a wave of music and light, as float after float joined the parade, each displaying happiness and joy on the faces of those involved. The floats were completely different, each with it’s own style and individuality, and all hoping to achieve the most coveted prize of the “Best Float”, the Donald Rafferty Trophy and a prize of 500 euro in cash, setting them at the top of the festive summit. In the end it was the house built by Leddy Contractors took the honours followed by the Trinity cottage and the Cabo Roig Surfers. For the most part the floats were situated toward the back of the parade as they followed a multitude of colourful and enthusiastic dancers, musicians and other displays, characters from cartoons and the films, all of whom were having a thoroughly good time. TKO Radio provided much of the music in the build-up to the event and throughout the afternoon, as local groups Streeters and Kolted kept the party

going through Saturday evening. The fact that the event was a major success was with thanks to the majority of businesses who all came together to dress the streets and parade route, many offering further entertainment and specials to ensure the party continued into the night. From pub to pub across the strip, the picture was much the same, a sea of green, smiles, clinking glasses, music and, of course, loud crowds. At the Emerald Isle in La Florida the celebration got underway much earlier in the day with performers, including Sunshine FM, Dan Davy, Rebecca Holt, the Crazy Ladies, Raquel Pena and others, entertaining the large crowd from early afternoon. They were joined around the pool by charity stalls and booths provided by Help at Home, the Royal British Legion and more, which were doing their bit to raise funds for their respective organisations, so it was not only St Patrick that was promoted during the day. Rockys Arena at Alameda del Mar was also awash with green and gold providing music on the terrace long into the night as did Clarke’s Bar in Playa Flamenca where they were also celebrating their 11th anniversary with traditional Irish music and food. Of course we mustn’t forget that St Patrick himself who was also present at many of the events, no doubt spreading fear amongst the snakes in Spain, worried that history might be repeated, as he banished them from local shores, as he so famously did in Ireland. But well done to the Irish Community, particularly in Cabo Roig, the organisers, the individuals, the bars, restaurants and many other businesses that worked so hard to make the event another overwhelming success. And as people flocked from miles around, eager to take a place by the roadside, to observe the spectacle of colour and the carnival atmosphere, it truly was a joy to watch, a pleasure I have no doubt for those who were directly involved and for the many who were taking part. 'Ramón de Campoamor’ Residents Centre' revived Cllr Sofia Alvarez on the steps of the centre with Josefina

Situated in Calle Ciprés, Torre Zenia, close to the Aldi at Lomas de don Juan, Campoamor, the councillor was on hand last Wednesday when she took around a small group of local residents as she explained how the building would in future be used. It is currently managed by Josefina, a council employee, and opens from 9am-2pm every Monday to Friday. Unfortunately, though, her command of English, which would seem to be one of the basic requirements of any centre manager, seems extremely limited. Neither is the centre currently fitted with a telephone or internet, although the councillor said that “both are works in progress.” In addition, the International Library opens every Tuesday and Thursday from 1-5pm. There are also approximately 7 local groups, Russian, German, Polish and Bulgarian that regularly meet at the centre, including the Charity, Orihuela Costa Community Care, BELIEVE YOU MATTER, but there is still much more room for others. The six available rooms are clean, spacious and well equipped, some with classroom furniture and one with a completely mirrored wall, which is intended for fitness and dance classes. However the major drawback is that all bookings have to be made at the Playa Flamenca Town Hall at least 15 days in advance. If the booking is for any time or day other than Monday to Friday morning, the key has also to be collected and returned to the town hall.

P

reviously known locally as the Orihuela Costa Reading Point or the Residents’ participation centre, the facility, which in 2013 cost almost 3 million euros to build, was renamed by mayor Emilio Bascuñana just over 2 weeks ago when, together with the councillor for International Residents, Sofia Alvarez, a promise was made to provide the funding and support necessary to revive and regenerate the use of the centre by local community groups and associations.

POINTS TO BE ADDRESSED: 1. The centre needs to be managed by a person proficient in languages. 2. It must be equipped with a telephone and internet. 3. Opening hours should be extended throughout the entire day. 4. The library should open Monday - Friday. 5. Bookings of the facility should be made at the centre itself.

There is no doubt that the 'Ramón de Campoamor’ Residents Centre' could prove to be a very useful community facility, but there are a number of issues that first need to be addressed. So whilst there once again seems to be the will, there are few signs from the information provided that there is likely to be a way, any real progress in the numbers of groups and organisations that will use the centre in the future, despite the fact that the facility is provided absolutely free. But it is a step forward, with the use of the building once again at the disposal of the associations that are situated on the Orihuela Costa. And there is no doubt that it could be made to work, but I and others who were at the walk around on the day feel that it is only when the points above are addressed that any real progress will be made.

Still no decision on San Javier as Corvera airport put out to tender D

espite the fact that a decision on the closure of San Javier airport has still not been taken the Murcia Regional Government is about to put out to public tender the management contract for the new Corvera Airport on Wednesday. The contract will have a concessionary period of 25 years and will provide the supervision and operation of all airport infrastructure, including the runway, buildings, facilities and all commercial premises. The objective of the tender process will be to find the best management company for the airport but this will be highly influenced by the price offered as

the authority looks for the fee that will allow it to recover it’s investment in the shortest possible time frame. The announcement was made by the Minister of Development and Infrastructure, Pedro Rivera, at a press conference on Wednesday. He said that the regional government's goal is "not to delay the International Airport tender, a facility that is key to the development of the Region. He confirmed that it is completely finished and ready to operate immediately the successful company is in place.

Orihuela Government launches District Boards

T

he Councillor for Citizens, Sabina-Goretti Galindo, announced on Tuesday that she is close to finalising the process of dividing the municipality into eleven neighbourhood districts, which was approved by the plenary last September, despite the wishes of many people living on the Coast. "We are now in the final stages of setting up the District Boards in each of the 11 districts in which our municipality is distributed," whose function will be to engage in two-way communication with regard to their management with the Orihuela Town Hall. This will be done either individually or through citizen groups that will be registered in the municipal offices. According to the mayor "one of the commitments of the government team was to democratise the City Council, providing the residents in each District to have more input to the management of their region which the establishment of the 11 districts will do.” As a result, Bascuñana, has appointed the following District 1 District 2 District 3 District 4 District 5 District 6 District 7 District 8 District 9 District 10 District 11

The vote was actually approved by the majority in plenary with the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos voting in favor and the PSOE and Foro Demócrata abstaining whilst Cambiemos voted against.

In a recent cost cutting measure the post office stopped home postal deliveries to Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Regia and La Zenia I and II. They said that they were not a single integrated urban entity with the required population to maintain a full postal service. With the further division of the Costa by the Partido Popular and minority Ciudadanos what hopes there were of re-establishing that authority will now be even further diminished.

Critics say that the concept is one that breaks up existing power structures in order to decrease the power that they are able to exert which will certainly be the case on the Orihuela Costa where residents are already being denied their rights, so subdividing

new art class is starting on Wednesday 22nd March at The Final Whistle Sports Bar in ‘Consum Square’, La Marina. Suzanne Stokes has been teaching recreational art in the area for many years and also has groups at PALS Social Club in La Siesta on Monday mornings, and at Restaurante La Herradura in Los Montesinos on Thursdays.

The monthly General meeting on Thursday evening brought the announcement of Graham Shatford as the new Vice Chairman, a move warmly welcomed by members. Graham has been active in the branch for a number of years so his elevation came as no surprise.

Guest Speaker at the meeting was local Photographer David Stokes. David gave an excellent presentation on better photography in which he incorporated both good composition and camera technique as he demonstrated to members how they could improve their photographs with just a little knowledge and thought. David holds regular classes on basic photography which he adver-

tises in the local press. More information from David at: david@photogenics-cb.net The following day, Friday, members were out in force at The Emerald Isle where they joined Help at Home, as well as a number of other charities. They all came together with local entertainers who provided their time absolutely free including Sunshine FM, Dan Davy, Rebecca Holt, the Crazy Ladies and Raquel Peña at a packed venue in celebration of St Patrick’s Day.

Mollie in pastel

Suzanne encourages beginners to spend the first few weeks learning to draw, because it is the foundation of going on to successful painting or pastel work, and provides drawing equipment and projects for the first few weeks. After that artists can try watercolour, acrylics, oils or pastels before choosing what medium they wish to move on to. Classes are very relaxed and friendly and more information can be found on www.sue-stokes.co.uk or call her on 680 961 025. You can also see (and buy!) original works and fine art prints by Suzanne at La Herradura (next to the REPSOL Garage) in Los Montesinos or see her online shop www.sue-stokes.com/store

Almoradí remembers 1829 earthquake W

ith almost 400 fatalities the Members of the Almoradi Civil Protection demonstrating earthquake, which took a simulated earthquake rescue on Saturday place on 21 March 1829, is being remembered in Guardamar, Torrevieja and Almoradi with a number of commemorative events. Over half of the deaths were in Almoradi where, in addition to the fatalities, there were a further three hundred injured, many of them seriously, and virtually all left naked, hungry and deprived of any shelter. A total of 2,965 houses were destroyed and another 2,396 were badly damaged as the quake peaked at a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale. Every year in Almoradi, its inhabitants parade Saint Emigdio, the patron saint of earthquakes, around the town, as worshippers pray to the memory of all victims. The program of activities began last Friday with a nightly vigil and parade. On Saturday there was an exhibition by the Red Cross, Civil Protection, Canine Rescue, and Search and Rescue (ECOS ByRMA) as they demonstrated much of the equipment they would now use in an earthquake emergency. Today, Monday 20, two talks are being held at the institutes Antonio Sequeros and Azud de Alfeitamí to raise awareness among students about the seismic risk and then the program of events will culminate tomorrow, Tuesday 21, with a mass in the church of San Andrés (19.00 hours) following which members of the Local Police and Civil Protection will make pray to San Emigdio to protect the locality from future earthquakes.

Torrevieja legalises new Starbucks Bar

7

Despite opening in the Habaneras Commercial Centre without any formal licenses on 2 March the new Starbucks coffee bar was finally legalised last week by the Torrevieja councillor Fanny Serrano. The councillor de actividades said that she only knew of the bar after receiving an invitation to attend the opening through a social network site. She said that she was surprised because as councillor responsible for such activities she had not signed any opening license nor received any request related to the establishment, despite processing similar documentation for a number of other establishment which have opened in recent months in the same Mall. Following an inspection by the Policia Local on 3 March the company was then given ten days to present all of the necessary licences and paperwork On 6 March the company, which is based in Madrid, said that it was surprised by the municipal response confirming that it had presented all necessary requests after the first inspection of the Local Police. Following a 2nd visit by the police the bar was required to close its doors for the remainder of the week. Last Wednesday, however, the company presented all the complete documentation and on the same day Serrano granted the license.

Bev has been with Studio32 for a number of years, playing lead roles such as Ado Annie in their production of “Oklahoma!” and Mrs Fezziwig in their last production “A Christmas Carol”. SAMM Sailors Party Time SAMM, the Sailing Association Mar Menor is not just about sailing, there is an active social program organised by the Social Committee, ably led by their Chairwoman Jill Chorley. The latest event was the Valentines Dinner and Dance held at the restaurant Ruf Mari in Los Urrutias. During a break in the dancing the Commodore, Paul Shard, presented a bouquet to Jo Perring who was retiring from the position of membership secretary. A good time was had by everybody who attended who are now looking forward to the next knees-up, the SAMM Spring Bash, held over three days at the hotel Costa Narejos in May. ‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Controversy at the Carnival

I

n the Canary Islands, as well as in many predominantly Catholic countries around the world, we are currently enjoying a period of collective madness, commonly known as Carnival. Until a few years ago when cheap overseas travel and holidays became readily available, few British people had ever experienced or understood what Carnival was really about; it is certainly not just about amazingly gorgeous dresses, high heels and skimpily dressed girls and guys. Carnival is part of the Christian, and mostly Catholic, festival season that takes place just before the period known as Lent. It is a period of excess and celebration involving parades, parties, as well as elements of the circus added for good measure. Masks and costumes are worn, together with an excessive consumption of alcohol and food. Food fights, mockery of authority, satire and exaggeration are the order of the day. Abusive language, exaggerated features, such as mouths, bellies, noses and penises are all part of the fun, with gleeful depictions of death and disease being part of a time when the world is viewed through a different lens with the reversal of what passes for everyday normality. It is in this context that various Carnival parades are currently taking place in towns and cities all across Spain and the Canary Islands. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, for instance, this three-week binge that culminates in a parade that is billed as ‘Second only to Rio’, vulgarity and tackiness are at their peak. In Germany too, there were raised eyebrows with one impressive float sporting a huge and colourful

effigy of the UK's Brexit Prime Minister, Theresa May, with a loaded pistol marked 'Brexit' pointing into her mouth, no doubt ready to blow her brains out. Another popular float featured the ever-controversial US President Trump sexually violating the robed and tearful figure 'Libertas’, a Roman goddess (of Statue of Liberty fame), which is not a sight for the easily offended or faint hearted, I might add, although it is surprisingly poignant in its message. Carnival is not always comfortable, since it challenges authority and established views, as well as mocking the status quo; this was one of the reasons why the dictator, General Franco, wanted to ban it in the Canary Islands during Spain’s Civil War. Closer to home, the winner of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival Drag Queen competition was won by an artist with an imaginative interpretation of the Virgin Mary that cleverly morphed into Christ's crucifixion; in so many ways, it was a welldeserved win for a talented artist. I found myself feeling both very impressed, as well as uncomfortable by the performance, which for me was a step too far. The Bishop of the Canary Islands waded into the controversy, reportedly describing the performance as "frivolous blasphemy", and then unwisely commented that it was the saddest day of his time on the Canary Islands, and even more disturbing than the plane crash at Barajas airport of the flight destined for Gran Canaria that claimed the lives of 154 residents and tourists several years ago. Such comments are not only cruel coming from a man of the cloth, but also upsetting to many people, not least the relatives and friends of the victims. I sincerely hope that the interpretation of the Bishop's words were down to linguistic errors and not an expression of his true feelings. If so, many would suggest a period of retreat and reflection for the good Bishop to reconcile his views with the feelings of so many who were hurt and offended by his careless

comments, whatever his views about blasphemy, of which he has a point. So, as Carnival comes to an end for another year, with the burial of that blessed sardine once again, we can only reflect and wonder upon the artistry, energy and imagination that so many performers have displayed during these weeks of excess. On a more serious note, I hope that we are all wise enough to recognise the anger, criticism and defiance of authority that have entered the Carnival parades this year. After all, over the years, Carnival has always reflected the times that we are in; it is also a time when many true and honest feelings are genuinely expressed.we have lost it. EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON Euronics Darts League Results: Thursday 9th March Results of Ladies and Men’s Pairs Competitions: THE LADIES The Ladies gathered at Massey’s and it was handbags at dawn! First to arrive was punctual Patty Poo Schofield and Winsome Wendy Woo Hayward of the Jaguars. The Hen’s Chicks and supporters turned up a pair short unfortunately as one of them was still in the UK for the ‘big night’ which was a pity for her partner Jan Hassallunfortunately no substitutes allowed after the qualifying rounds. Then, two by two, the Hellraisers arrived complete with their supporters’ kits and paraphernalia. In the absence of the 4th pair, a round Robin system saw all three pairs play each other so that the pair with the least points would be eliminated. The other two pairs going through to the finals. Unlike the chaps, the ladies all opted to play 601 best of 3 for the semi’s (thanks heavens) but fair to say that the double one, no-bust rule and then nearest the bull didn’t need to be used on this night. Ladies Semi’s Pair 1 was Patty Poo and Wendy versus pair 2: Hen’s Chicks Winnie Mackay and Henni Oortwijn. The jags went ahead for the first leg with Poo checking out with D3. Winnie then finished the 2nd leg D3 and Henni the 3rd on, also on D3 to give the Hen’s a 2-1 win. When we eventually coaxed Winnie back in from her fag break, she and Henni then faced Pair No.3, Hellraisers Cheryl McGlynn and Sue Spears. The little blond ‘bob’-shells started well, with Sue scoring 83 and Cheryl scoring 107, 73 and checking out on D2. Hennie then did a lot of hard work in the 2nd leg (66, 61, 61, 89, D1) and Winnie did the necessary in the 3rd leg 79, 99 and another D3 to see them through to the finals. The 3rd match of pair 3 v pair 1 would see the victors go through to the finals too. Poo (85, 79, 69) and Woo (76, 82, D8) rose to the challenge in the first leg but the Cheryl and Sue’s D16 evened things up for the 2nd leg. Woo was hungry for the final though and 98, 84 and D1 saw them safely through. Ladies Finals The format was now best of 5 and the Cheeky Chicks took the first leg with Winnie’s D5. From then on though it was Jaguars all the way with Wendy Woo Hayward finishing the next 3 legs with D20, D2 and D1, all 4 ladies putting in some good scoring. A big thanks to Massey’s and all the players, supporters and organisers Report by Simone de Lacy Winners: Pat Schofield and Wendy Hayward (Junction Jaguars) Runners up: Winnie Mackay and Henni Oortwijn (Hen’s Teeth Chicks) The Men The Junction was heaving with players, spectators and the regulars for tonight's Semi and Finals men's pairs competition comprising of Porterhouse Bees, The Hub, El Capitan and Las Rosas. The draw was done seeing The Bees V El Capitan and Hyenas v Las Rosas for the semi-final shoot out. Men’s Semi’s Porterhouse Bees v El Capitan It was game on for The Bees (Graham Parker, Tim Goodacre v El Capitan (Mel Betell, David Rotella). Plenty of 80's from both sides but a clear win for the Bees duo Goodacre S10-D5. Betell managed

a 130 in the second leg but Parker 125, Goodacre 140 and a D4 finish saw the Bees buzzing into the third leg 2 – 0. The Capitan duo didn't display their usual high scores tonight and flagged as Bee's Parker smoothly finished with an amazing 7, T14 D16 and also notched up 2 x 100's. With a clear 3-0 victory the Bees lined up for the final. Hub Hyenas v Las Rosas The second semi-finalists Hyenas (Stu Clark, John 180 Eyre) and Las Rosas (Adrian Buitekaht, John Spencer) kept the game at a fast pace with Eyre smoothly scoring the one and only 180 of the night and a D10 finish for the Hub. Buitekaht threw the first 100 for his side to set the pace and also stole the second leg with a D10, helped with 100 from Spencer. Eyre and Buitekhat didn't rest with 140, 100 and 125, 135 and 100 scores respectively leading to a D6 from Oh what a lovely Eyre to take the lead. Spencer evened the score with an amazing finish 20, T16, D8. With everything to play for Clark 140 and Eyre's 100 wasn't enough to take down the mighty Rosas guys as Spencer coolly took his team through to the finals. Men’s Finals Porterhouse Bees v Las Rosas. With the best of 7, both sides had a fight on their hands for the final place. The Bees took the lead thanks to Parker’s 9,14 D20 finish. On to the second leg a clean finish for Parker D8. In the third Las Rosas just couldn't reach their

SPANGLISH GOLF SOCIETY In association with Sapphire Properties and Costa Blanca Green Fee Services at Hacienda Del Alamo on 15th March 2017. For this months meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 22 players visited the established course at Hacienda Del Alamo taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Another good week everyone, keep up the good work, and enjoy your darts. Pam Horton, 96 571 0066, Ladies Darts Coordinator Emails: Dartess501@gmail.com

Ángel Jiménez joins La Marquesa Golf as over 10,000 euro is raised for local charities

La

Marquesa Golf Club in Rojales held another edition of the Justo Quesada y Josefina Memorial Charity Pro-Am tournament on Sunday, March 12th. The event managed to raise €10,730, which will be divided evenly between Rojales Town Hall Social Services, Cáritas Rojales and the Butterfly Children charity – DEBRA Spain. This was thanks to the fees paid for the honour of playing in Miguel Ángel Jiménez’s team, an auction of two sand wedges and a bag used by Sr Jiménez last year and donations of €20 per birdie scored from the management of La Marquesa Golf. Rojales Councillor for Sports Pedro Llopis said it had been a magnificent occasion and thanks to the generosity of everyone involved would bring much needed help to people who need it in the local area. He also praised Miguel Ángel Jiménez for being so friendly and having made the time to come back yet again, “which is great publicity for what the municipality has to offer”. Catherine Prangere of Cáritas explained they work with local families who need it most, giving them food and clothes for children. “The amount will be a great help to carry on this project,” she said. Mary Chambers of DEBRA said it was an amazing amount of money and thanked La Marquesa for inviting them to be one of the beneficiaries again, Miguel Ángel Jiménez and everyone who gave so generously. The extra funds will help with help with the research into

Results: A total of 28 teams took part and the champions were the professional Jordan Gib and the amateurs Joachim Myhr, Geir Langeland and Aiden Reilly, who finished with a total of 131 shots. Second place went to the team led by Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who played with Antonio Pascual Pastor, Jonas Anders Sjolund and Antonio Pedrera Perez and remarkably scored exactly the same meaning the result had to be decided based on their handicaps. In third place was the team led by Jesús Rodríguez, one of La Marquesa’s own professionals.

‘Around and About the Courses – Latest News’ Here is just a taster of local news for some of the courses in our region. New Sierra Golf After being closed for 4 years the course has now re-opened and while still a 9 hole layout the high season prices are attractive and with a fleet of 45 buggies can accept golf society bookings. La Peraleja The course closed just prior to the New Year and attempts are being made to find a buyer and in the meanwhile they continue to water and maintain the greens only. We will provide further information when known. El Valle They suffered a huge electrical fire which wiped out all the buggies and electric trolley's and while no damage occurred to other property there has been a delay in receiving the new batch of buggies which has impacted on some March bookings and this could continue for a few weeks yet to come. Alicante After the 'Gota Fria' last week parts of the course were totally submerged and it has been necessary for them to close the course and 'pump' the excess water from the course but they hope to re-open the course from 19/03/17. Altorreal Anyone that has visited the course in the last few years since the purchase by new owners can see that excellent work that has been done on the course and this will continue through 2017 including changes to the academy and buggy paths. Vistabella Diego Garcia has been the well known and friendly face at Vistabella for many years but he has decided to return to his previous role as a commercial tutor and we wish him well in the future. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Torry salute hat-trick hero Duran CD Torrevieja .............. 4 CD Segorbe................. 1

S

pirits needed to be lifted after last week’s disappointing home defeat, so this emphatic victory over lowly Segorbe certainly fitted the bill. Remember the 80s pop group Duran Duran, well on Father’s day at Nelson Mandela Stadium, a certain Torry number 8 went one better, now wishing to be known as Duran Duran Duran!! What a way to end his goal drought, scoring a 19 minute hat trick in emphatic style, whilst turning the match on it´s head. Having completely dominated proceedings, Pedreño´ s men found themselves trailing after 53 mins, seemingly powerless to find that elusive goal. Enter senor Duran. He was certainly ´Hungry like the Wolf´ in the way he executed his goals, whilst his enthusiasm became infectious amongst a previously sub-

dued set of colleagues. Void of 4 key players through suspension and injury, Pedreño must have thought the worse for this important (they all are from now on!) fixture, having set his squad a target of 44 points to avoid the dreaded drop. So to go into half time goalless, even though the hosts had virtually all the play, must have infuriated the walrus like manager. As early as the 1st min, when Molina had a glorious chance with a close range header which was easily saved, Torry looked more likely to come out on top. In fact the only on target 1st half effort from Segorbe arrived a minute later, courtesy of a Cesar long range speculative lob which Buba did well to gather. Molina thought he had opened his account for Torry on 8 mins, but he soon came back to ´Planet Earth´ on realising an eagle eyed linesman had flagged offside. Duran first arrived on the scene after 21 mins, his firm drive rattling the woodwork, before Molina forced a good save from the rebound. Further strikes from Duran, Molina and Lewis, failed to make a change to the scoreboard, but worse was to follow early into the new half. Everything looked hunky dory when a fierce 20 yard Lewis free kick forced a brilliant acrobatic save from Segorbe keeper Carlos, but inexplicably everything suddenly went black! An fine solo run to Torry´s goal line by full back Jorge, culminated in a dangerous low cross to the far post for an unmarked Cesar, needing only a simple tap in to put his side ahead. At this stage it was a case of ´Save a Prayer´, for it looked like all the hard work had been undone, but how wrong can one be! A loose ball fell to Duran on 62 mins, confidently slammed home from close range, then 4 minutes later he came up with ´The Reflex´ header from a corner, before finally completing his salvo by scoring direct from a corner on 81 mins. Goal of the match was saved until near the end, a Vicente cross majestically headed home by leading marksman Pastor. Not only did this result complete a double over seemingly doomed Segorbe, but it propelled Torry out of the relegation places for the first time since September. On Sun 26 Mar, Torry visit Silla in confident mood of yet another 3 points in their quest for div 3 survival.

Carp R Us Angling Club Spring Series round four was fished on the Eden stretch of the River Segura. After the torrential rain on Monday were lucky that this venue, a run off from the main river, was fishable as the main river was a raging torrent running at least three metres higher than normal. Unfortunately, although the weather was kind to us there was a lot of silt flowing down the stretch and this ruined the fishing. Only two anglers caught, both using the pole and bread. First was Steve Fell with 1.36 kg and second was Jeremy Fardoe with 0.86 kg. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carprus.weebly.com or on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca. The club is currently looking for new members and anyone interested can contact club secretary, Steve Fell, on 634 379 081.

The Orange Tree Golf Society @ La Torre We met the Monday night prior to this society event to organise the next days events. We had a full compliment of members. We also welcomed a couple of new members to the society showing how this society is growing my strength to strength, welcome boys. We all met for breakfast at The Orange Tree, Cabo Roig before setting off for the golf course. On arrival we discovered it in lovely condition and with very pleasant weather allowing most members to be able to wear shorts. The captain, Stuart Robertson, decided on a new format for the society. We played a champagne 4 man Texas scramble. So the rules and conditions were explained and we all set off for a wonderful day. We then all returned to home base, The Orange Tree bar and restaurant for refreshments and prize giving. We must thank Chris and his staff for the service and beautiful food.. The winners on the day, as shown in the picture, were Dave Eadington (John Fleming not being camera shy standing in for Dave), Andy Shuttle, Chris Blown and Peter Whittaker with nett score of 137, 2nd were Pete Cowan, Stuart Robertson, Jack Sheridan and Simon Sharples with 146.1.

NTP´s were Chris Blown (5th), Pete Cowan (11th) and Chris Blown (17th). The next society event is on Tuesday 21st March, we meet between 5pm-6pm the Monday prior to pay and organise the day. The entry sheet is available within the restaurant for members and guests to entry.
