MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

ne of the aims of The Royal British Legion is to perpetuate the memory of those who died in the service of their country; not only in the two World Wars but also in all of the conflicts that have taken place since those terrible years. Here in Spain, in order to commemorate the sacrifices that were made by those service and civilian personnel, the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion held its annual Remembrance Day Service and Parade at the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras

O

yesterday, the 2nd Sunday in November, when poppy wreaths were laid at the Garden of Remembrance in a gesture that the Branch has uniquely made its own. Once again, attended by a record congregation, the Rev Terry Baxter led the service, held for the 7th year in this picturesque village church in the diocese of Pilar de la Horadada. Following the Spanish National and the Union flags the standards of the collected military associations were borne proudly to represent those who gave their lives, whilst poppies were worn as a reminder to new generations who will inevitably face new conflicts. FROM PAGE ONE The start of the service had seen them respectfully processed into the chapel as the congregation sang ‘For those in Peril on the Sea.’ There were readings from the British Vice Consul, Lloyd Milen, and Flight Lieutenant David Carter RAF, son of the Branch Chairman, a poem from Carol Stockwell, and a wonderful a capella rendition of ‘I Believe’ by Rebecca Holt. The music for the service was once again provided by the magnificent Phoenix Concert Band under the professional direction of their Musical Director, Julie Schofield. Following bugler Derek Hayes performance of the mournful Last Post, which echoed out of the church and around the adjacent park, everyone was united, standing shoulder to shoulder for the two minute's silence. As I looked around the gathered congregation prior to Derek sounding ‘Reveille’ there was more than the occasional tear with members of the congregation using this time to remember those friends, family and colleagues who had suffered or died in the service of their nation. The ceremony then moved out to the Garden of Remembrance where the RBL Wreath was laid by the Branch Chairman Keith Carter. Wreaths were also placed by the Vice Consul, Flt Lt Carter,

the Chairman of Spain District North, Nigel Hails, the Orihuela Councillor Martina Scheurer and a number of Service and Miklitary Organisations. In this way the ceremony brought together the common sentiments of all those present to share pride in restoring freedoms. The wreaths were laid to the accompaniment of a lament played by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. This was followed by the opportunity for branch members and members of the public to pay their personal tributes by laying suitably adorned poppy crosses. Following the service Vice Consul Lloyd Milen said he felt privileged to lay a poppy garland on behalf of the British Government. Flanked by many members of the general public the final act saw the Pipes and Drums leading over a hundred and fifty members of the congregation as they marched from the church and past the assembled dignitaries prior to enjoying a delightful buffet lunch in the Mil Palmeras Restaurant. The National Service of Remembrance, also held yesterday at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War but after the Second World War the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation's dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was

widened once again to extend the remembrance to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn. Of course Remembrance is not just about those who fought in the last two World Wars, but it is also in respect of those involved in the many other conflicts worldwide and those who are still fighting for peace and freedom even now. It is also about all of us learning from the past and resolving to make the world a better place to live in the future.

Despite being told by Orihuela Council that they will have to remove the illegal barrier erected by the urbanisation some years ago, blocking the La Regia walkway through to the Cabo Roig beach, residents of the Bella Vista Urbanisation, have completely defied the Orihuela authorities by replacing the gate with a brand new fence. The new fixture now shows no signs of the previous gate ever existing, their logic presumably being that the public will forget that it was ever there and the ‘problem’ of restoring access may well go away. The move is seen as a direct snub to the Orihuela acting mayor Antonio Zapata, who is also responsible for infrastructure, in that it is his office that is taking the action to remove the gate. Just last week the Councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, told the Leader that the legal steps to reopen the walkway are nearing the end of the allowed time period. “As with all administrative procedures in Spain, these things take time,

and we want to make sure that we don´t take shortcuts that could cause problems in the future”, she said, “but the final phase of consultation is nearing the end, at which point Councillor Zapata, will appear before the press to announce when demolition action will begin”.

TIME TO HELP THOSE WHO ARE MOST IN NEED Orihuela Costa Parish Priest Don Joaquin Carlos Carlos collecting just some of your donations last year on behalf of CARITAS

Last week, we revealed how one in four people in Spain are now living in poverty, after the Cáritas organisation released their latest figures, showing how there has been an increase of 4.4 million people facing the worst times as a result of the financial crisis. The number of people now living in poverty has reached a record 11.7 million. Of those people, the report says that 77% have no work and 61% are struggling to find a place to live. The report also says that half a million families in Spain have no source of income. The official unemployment figure in Spain is around 23%, whereas in our local area the figure is much higher, at 33.07%. Therefore, we consider that the time is right to once again ask for your help, as we launch our annual campaign to collect food for the hungry, which has been a huge success over recent years, and we hope that your generosity will once again show how much you care and are prepared to directly help somebody in need. Between now and Christmas, we will be collecting foodstuffs, and are asking for donations of dried or tinned food, preferably with a long use-by date. As always, we are also collecting for the family pet. When families are struggling to feed themselves, it is not surprising that the extended members of that family fall down the list of priorities, and so we are also collecting dried or tinned pet food that we can also distribute.

Recently, we have been asked why we stopped collecting toys for the kids too, and so, we have also included those this year too. You are welcome to wrap your gift, for that added excitement to the recipient, but if you do, please give us a clue on the wrapping as to the suggested age and gender, if appropriate, of the toy you are donating. You can of course give cash if you like, although we much prefer the material goods in this campaign, as we then know for a fact that every single item donated goes directly to help somebody in need. As of previous years, we of course thank you for your continued generosity, and stress how even the smallest of donations really can make a difference. With this sort of campaign, it really is true to say that “every little helps”. All of the items donated will be distributed to local charitable and help associations at Christmas, so your generosity really has the chance to make a huge impact to a family during what could be the bleakest of times. You can drop off your donations at our offices in the Los Dolces commercial centre, or, if your gift is too difficult to carry, or perhaps you struggle with mobility yourself, then call our office and we can try to make arrangements to collect your donations. We will keep you updated throughout the campaign, and, once again, on behalf those who can look forward to a magical Christmas thanks to you, we thank you.

TORREVIEJA PP IN DANGER OF LOSING OVERALL MAJORITY Almost mimicking the National opinion, data from the latest local political poll in Torrevieja reveals that the ruling Partido Popular, governed by mayor Eduardo Dólon, would no longer have the overall majority in the local government if the elections were held right now.

José Manuel Dolón of Los Verdes would be the 2nd choice as the Municipal Head

The October opinion polls by SyM reveal that although the PP would still receive the most votes, it would no longer be enough to secure a majority, with them holding only 12 or 13 council seats. The result being that they would have to form a coalition in order to stay in government, or face a situation similar to Orihuela, where a coalition stands against them. The second party would be the Socialist PSOE group, who would gain 9 seats, then the alternative APTCe group with 3 or 4 and the UI with 2. The Los Verdes would not gain enough support to secure a single seat, according to the poll. The registrants in the poll still prefer Eduardo Dolón to be mayor however, but in second place would be José Manuel Dolón from the Los Verdes to by the municipal head, ahead of the socialist Ángel Sáez. In terms of the overall political opinion of Torrevieja and the performance of the ruling party, 31% of respondents said that their opinion is “very bad”, whereas 27% said “very good”. In terms of the performance of Eduardo Dolón during his term, 31% scored that as “very bad”, whereas 30% thought he had been “very good”. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of those results is that the “very bad” opinion is considerably higher amongst those in the under 45 age group, whereas the “very good” opinion is more prevalent in those over 65 years of age.

VEGA BAJA JOBS CONTINUE TO INCREASE As the summer months are almost forgotten and we head towards the winter, it is inevitable that unemployment will increase as seasonal workers become surplus to requirement, but that trend in increased unemployment is not apparent in some areas of the Vega Baja. Unemployment across the Vega Baja increased by 129 people in October, with 33.07% of the population now out of work. However, the seasonal expectations of the service industry were overtaken once again by other sectors, with 174 construction workers losing their jobs in October, 100 agricultural workers and another 70 in industry. In fact, the service sector generated 494 new jobs, offsetting those who have lost work. According to the employment agency SERVEF, Torrevieja has seen the largest increase in unemployment, with 417 registered workers now losing their jobs. Guardamar del Segura was in second place with 86 new unemployed people, then Formetera with 12. However, the opposite happened in Orihuela once again, where unemployment fell by 186 people in October, as was the case in Pilar de la Horadada, where 87 people found work, then Callosa de Segura with 64 and Catral with 56. By gender, 218 women lost their jobs compared with 89 men who have found employment in October.

TORREVIEJA EUTHANIZED 246 FERAL CATS LAST YEAR Information released by the Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja this week reveals that the tax payers of the municipality funded the euthanization and incineration of 246 feral cats. The veterinary clinic that operates on behalf of the town hall has submitted a bill for euthanizing 246 cats during 2013, at a cost of 4,464.90 euro, plus 1,129.48 euro for the incineration. The greens unveiled the figures at a press conference focused on expressing their support for the new agreement between the municipality and three animal associations to control the cat population by spaying and neutering campaign, an agreement aimed at now avoiding their slaughter, which the Los Verdes applaud as a better way of dealing with the issue. A spokesperson for the Los Verdes said that the group offer “Congratulations to the mayor and the Department of Health for deciding to assume the sterilisation CES

program”, which involves capturing and sterilizing the many cats that make the feline colonies in Torrevieja, “leading to a dignified treatment of these animals, that not only have the right to live, but are victims of a society that still sees the rest of complex animals as if they were mere objects”, and therefore, “lacking rights and, what is worse, the most fundamental respects”. However, to ensure that the town hall don´t revert back to a campaign of killing these animals, the Los Verdes are looking for assurances and guarantees that the project will mean a “stop to the sacrificing of cats in Torrevieja, once and for all”, .as has been happening in recent years. Whilst a medium term aim would be to achieve control and reduce the population of these cats, transferring the cost of sacrificing them to a sterilization campaign, whilst also “satisfying also the health problems reported by some neighbours”.

THE UNSTOPPABLE PLAGUE ome experts are calling the plague that is currently devastating the pine tree population in the Sierra de Orihuela as ‘unstoppable’, and with over 5,000 trees destroyed by the weevil in recent months the Valencian treasury has recently announced an allocation of 200,000 euros for its treatment. The pest was first detected in the Sierra de Orihuela in May and in just a few short months it has now spread into at least three adjoining municipalities with no sign whatsoever of any control. The insect attacking the pines is known as "Tomicus destruens» and is currently progressing unchecked throughout the Vega Baja. It is similar in appearance to indigenous bark beetles, and the danger is that newly established populations often go undetected for long periods. They are capable of killing relatively vigorous trees during outbreaks. In Redován, Council officials have concluded in a report that the central part of the pine forest has lost 40% of its pine trees while in the area neighbouring San Carlos the mortality rate is upward of 80% mortality of pinos carrascos (Aleppo pines). As in the neighboring municipality of Orihuela this pine forest was completely reforested in the early fifties. Orihuela Councillor, Manuel Gallud, said that his municipal department has found great reluctance by the Valencian government to accept that there is a problem in the region and provide necessary assistance to undertake urgent action. “They seem to be blaming the death of the pines on the lack of rains, which is absolute nonsense, so municipalities are now being forced to pay for expensive treatments for the elimination of the pine weevil themselves”. “The Regional allocation of 200,000 euros will go nowhere near meeting the cost of the necessary treatment

S

The Valencia Valencia Regional Ministry has now issued an order order making it com pulsory to treat treat trees trees and forests forests affected affected by the plague and is insufficient for municipalities to hire crews to cut down the dead pine trees that pose a hazard to people and property, so municipalities are now being forced to pay for expensive treatments themselves”. “The other aspect that is seriously affecting the problem is the fact that the disease has now spread over a number of different municipalities so co-ordinating any plan of action will be even more difficult”. But a study carried out recently establishes a series of actions which it is hoped will reduce the impact of pests and eliminate all sources before the next period of greatest activity, from April to October next year, one aspect of which requires removing all infected wood from the forest. So as council workmen begin the difficult task of cutting down and disposing of the infected pines in an effort to control the current infestation and thereby save at least

part of the pine tree population, in order to prevent another wave of dry trees and a similar, if not worse problem next summer, local councils must also unite in order to put together an emergency plan to contain it. As a result of the problems encountered in Orihuela and surrounds, reviews are also being carried out by experts in the pine forests of Pilar de la Horadada and Callosa de Segura, and although there appear to be few affected trees, the owners of adjoining private land have also been told to be attentive to the dreaded insect. Meanwhile, the Valencia Regional Ministry of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment issued an order on Monday making it compulsory to treat trees and forests affected by the plague, “regardless of the ownership of the land” and, according to the Plant Health Act, it is mandatory for the owners of farms or other vegetated surfaces to “enforce the phytosanitary measures”.

The poll showed Podemos winning 27.7 percent of the vote if it was held today, just ahead of the Socialists with 26.2 percent and with the PP trailing a distant third with 20.7 percent.

CAR SALES UP For the 14th consecutive month, new car sales have increased in Spain, with the year-on-year figure for October showing a 26.1% increase. The figure is slightly lower than the 26.2% in September, but is still considered to be a favourable increase, partly thought due to government subsidy in order to reduce the number of old cars on the roads. The first 10 months of the year saw 716,746 new car sales, an 18.1% increase on the same period in 2013.

The Minister explained that next year, health professionals will receive one hundred percent salary bonuses in derivatives of career and professional development, during a time which the Socialist deputy Ignacio Subías has pointed out is as “the election approaches”. In addition, the health budget will increase by 2.2% compared to 2014, with nearly five and a half billion euro representing 42.2% of the overall budget. The budget will also allow for the construction of two new hospitals in Gandia y Llíria, at a cost of 6.6 million euro. The Torre de la Fe hospital will be completed, at a cost of 7.2 million euro, as well as the demolition of the old building. Moreover, reforms will be completed in the hospitals in Orihuela, Ontinyent, Valencia and the clinic at Arnau, with additional investment in primary care centres. The 71.02% of the total health budget will be spent on healthcare, which will have 3.901 million euro, and the pharmaceutical benefits program will have a budget of 884.8 million, 16.11% of the budget. For his part, the socialist Ignacio Subías stressed that these developments have a “consolidated deception, of inequality, cuts, loss of rights and defaults”, as despite the budget increasing for 2015, it is still lower than that of 2000 and 2011.

COST OF HAULIERS STRIKE In preparation for the proposed road hauliers strike, set to take place from the 17th of November, analysts have been reporting on the impact of the action on the agricultural sector.

Set to take place in the midst of one of the biggest harvesting seasons, it is estimated that the strike will cause losses of around 150 million euro. The figure is based on statistics from last year, when

daily fruit and vegetable shipments reaching 42.18 million kilos with a value of 34.2 million euro per day. For their part, the transport sector will also stand to lose between 12 and 13 million euro per day. Valencia is likely to be one of the hardest hits regions, with an estimated loss of 31.22 million euro in the agriculture sector alone. Almería is next with 19.03 million euro losses, followed by Murcia, losing 17.53 million euro. For its part, Alicante will lose 5.95 million euro. The transport sector is demanding that the Spanish government return the “health tax” to them, a supplement that was placed on fuel and ruled illegal by the European court, with an outstanding debt, they say, of around 2 billion euro for the period from 2010 to 2012. The finance ministry has already said that it will not fully refund the money.

KILLER TRIAL SUSPENDED The judge presiding over a case in which a male is charged in connection with an attack on three women in the Murcia town of El Raal has suspended the hearing for a second time. It is alleged that the man, known as TR, assaulted the three women on a rural lane, hitting them with an object, with the intention of robbing them. One of the women died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the attack. The case has been suspended on account of a “very important” witness being unavailable, said to be in Casablanca, having been expelled from Spain. The court is now trying to find the witness and make arrangements for a video link in order for evidence to be given at the trial. The prosecutor is asking for 44 years in prison for the alleged attacker, whereas the defence say that his client maintains his innocence “from day one that he was arrested” and during “the time spent in prison, has never changed his story”. The incident occurred at around 16:45 on the 27th of February, 2012, when three elderly women, aged between 69 and 80, were walking down a country path in the Los Cobos area of the Murcia town of El Raal, next to a lemon grove. The defendant, who was born in Morocco, and was 31 years of age at the time, and with no criminal record, is said to have “silently” approached the women from behind, equipped with an industrial stick of some 88 centimetres in length and 4 cen-

timetres thick, and was “driven by the desire” to rob them, “even at the expense of their lives and physical integrity of the elderly women”. According to the prosecution, the accused then hit one of the women with a blow that was “not too hard”, resulting in her falling to the ground, stunned. The accused then dragged the victim towards the lemon grove, taking a purse from her pocket and removing the 5 euro note, 2 one euro coins and some cents. Returning to the remaining pair, the accused stuck a more severe blow to the second victim, then dragging her to the same location as the first. Finally, dealing a “severe” blow to the third victim, who was no alone, where she fell to the floor stunned, the accused then taking a 5 euro note from her purse before fleeing, throwing the stick into the groves. It was that third victim who died the next day, suffering an acute subdural hematoma. Two people said that they witnessed the alleged attacker flee in the opposite direction to where the victims lay. The accused is said to have then gone home, where he washed and shaved off his hair, before returning to work on a farm the next day.

TAXED SINGER FINE REDUCED The Tax Office has agreed to reduce the fine levied on opera singer Montserrat Caballé, after she was found guilty of defrauding the hacienda

Sources at the tax office report that it is normal to reduce the fine for fraud cases, if an agreement is reached with the guilty party to pay the money and refrain from future fraudulent activities. Having been found guilty of tax evasion for 2010, when she was a permanent resident in Andorra, the singer immediately paid 300,000 euro to the tax office and then set about raising the remaining outstanding amount, which was paid a short time later. However, despite paying the outstanding debt, the singer still faced a fine for tax evasion, and a potential prison sentence, but her prompt actions in repaying the tax has added to the mitigating circumstances that could lead to her paying an additional 250,000 euro, rather than the standard 65% of the defrauded amount, but an agreement would mean that the 81 year old singer would avoid going to prison.

COSTA BLANCA ON EUROSPORT The Alicante deputy for tourism, Joaquin Albaladejo, has attended the World Travel Market in London this week, with the sole aim of promoting sports in the area. Albaladejo, who is also the financial councilor for Torrevieja, met with representatives from the Eurosport TV channel, who have been invited along on a “press trip” to the province, where they will be given an example of the sporting excellence on offer across the province. The primary sports under the spotlights were cycling, as the provincial tourism board are “commitment to cycling as a way to increase the number of tourists out of season”, according to Albaladejo. In addition to cycling on TV, Albaladejo also met with Polish tour operators, as a country with 38 million inhabitants and a strong economic growth is emerging as one of the most important for potential markets in the EU. Sun and sand, active recreation or sports are products and services demanded my Polish tourist, for whom “the Costa Blanca an ideal destination to spend their vacation”, Albaladejo.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

KEEPING THE VOTE I recently received an email from a fellow blogger, urging me to encourage all expats who read my blogs to vote in the next UK General Election. Apparently, only 30,000 of the 2.5 million expats who have the right to vote, bother to do so. This is where the interesting politics begins since one of the UK political parties, currently in Government, is getting a tad concerned that it may be voted out of office in the 2015 General Election. This is where the sudden interest in the expat vote begins. For those who are unaware, British expats have the right to vote in a UK General Election under the 15-year rule, meaning that after 15 years we lose the right to vote. My fellow blogger went on to say that because she had lived outside the UK for the last 25 years she was unhappy that she no longer had the right to vote in the UK. The email duly instructed me to support a host of Conservative MPs in support of their campaigns, as well as ensuring that I

vote Conservative to ensure that this political party fulfil their promise to ensure that the voting rights for all expats are permanently extended. I have several problems with this proposal. Firstly, I am not about to suddenly become a supporter of the UK’s Conservative Party, nor to follow the dictates of their Chairman who came up with this brilliant wheeze to garner more support for a party that was likely to lose the next General Election. My cynicism comes from the belief that if the party had really wanted to do this they could have done so during their present and previous periods in Government, when the expat voice was conveniently ignored. How times change. Secondly, I am no longer interested in voting in UK elections. Don't get me wrong, I love the UK and always will, but as I have been out of the country for the last twelve years, I no longer feel that I have the right to vote. Each time I return to the country, I feel that I no longer belong. I fail to understand the surge in support for parties such as UKIP, the SNP and the recent near debacle in Scotland. Frankly, I am much more interested in being able to vote in the Spanish General Election as this will directly affect me. As a Spanish resident I can already vote in European and local elections, but cannot currently vote in the national elections of the country where I live, work and pay taxes. This, to me, seems more unjust than not being able to vote in the country of my birth. No doubt many will disagree with me and I can see their point of view, particularly if they intend to return to the UK in the future, have families in the UK, pay UK taxes

and receive UK pensions. If this should be the case, they can apply for a vote in the UK by registering for a postal vote on: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. I am told that the procedure is simple and it will take only three minutes to make the Chairman of the Conservative Party a very happy person. On second thoughts, maybe I will apply for a vote, but maybe not use it as intended… If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). YOU MAY BE AT RISK IF YOUR HOME IS UNINSURED CRASH DUMMIES PILING ON THE POUNDS

Home insurance in Spain

Crash-test dummies in America are piling on the pounds, in order for them to better represent the average size and shape of the humans they represent. The dummies have already been wearing “fat suits” during a number of test scenarios, but now, the only American company who manufactures these life-saving mannequins are redesigning a whole range of thicker waist lined and bigger butted models. Chris O' Connor, CEO of Humanetics, said that “Studies show that obese drivers are 78 percent more likely to die in a car crash”, before explaining how the dummies were modelled on an average person weighing about 167 pounds and with a healthy body mass index. The company is now designing models based on the statistics of an average 270 pound person, with a BMI of 35, which, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is morbidly obese. The change has come about after fears that seat belts, air bags and other safety features, which are traditionally designed for thinner people, don’t fit or offer protection to “heavier” people in the same way.

Having home insurance cover in Spain is not compulsory by law. However, at Linea Directa we highly recommend that you cover your buildings and their contents. Without insurance you will be fully responsible for footing the bill to any damages resulting from fire and water, a neighbours property, and you’ll be left unprotected against theft or damage from a wide range of potential mishaps. Your property in Spain may be let out and treated as a holiday home or it may be your permanent residence. In all cases, adequate home insurance is a must; after all, your property will certainly be one of your most valuable personal assets, and you need to protect it as such. When you take out a Spanish mortgage, one of the conditions from the bank will be compulsory buildings insurance from the lender to ensure that the bank loan is secured against risks to properties in Spain. Linea Directa can provide online quotes for Spanish buildings insurance. Its quick and easy and we will help you find the best deal for the needs of your particular cover.

FIVE PEGASUS RADARS NOW ON THE ROADS

What’s at stake for uninsured properties? Most standard building insurance policies in Spain cover the actual structure of the building as well as the fixtures and fittings. This includes the roof, walls, windows, kitchen, bathroom installations and fitted wardrobes. Individual items of furniture and any personal possessions are not included. This requires a Spanish home contents insurance policy. The common elements included in your building insurance will be for occurrences like subsidence, third-party liability and protection against damage caused by theft, storms, vandalism, fire and flood.

The DGT traffic department now has five helicopters fitted with their airborne radar speed detection equipment, Pegasus, the fifth launched in time to serve the road network in time for the weekend surrounding the 1st of November holidays. All five helicopters have been patrolling the skies in the run up to the holiday, paying particular attention to conventional roads, the location of most fatal incidents on the road network. According to data from the DGT, Pegasus is five times more successful than conventional ground based radars and, since the launch of the first helicopter, 17,892 vehicles have been checked, of which 3,199 drivers have been reported. The most serious offense staged a car travelling at 242 kilometres per hour in a 120 limited zone, and another driving at 199 kilometres per hour where the limit was 90. The Pegasus radars mounted on the helicopters of the DGT have two cameras, a panoramic one used for tracking and capturing speed, and the second that can read the license plate even at speeds of up to 360 kilometres per hour, up to 300 meters high and one kilometre from the target vehicle.

Home insurance with Linea Directa Linea Directa provides quality home insurance cover designed specifically for expatriates living in Spain. Whether you’re an existing home-owner or looking to purchase a property in Spain, our policies guarantee peace-of-mind at very competitive prices. COASTAL POLICE FORCE BOOSTED BY 6 NEW OFFICERS n additional 26 police officers joined the ranks of Orihuela´s Policía Local this week, with the number of agents looking out for the security of the municipality now standing at 150. According to the acting councillor for public safety, Manuel Gallud, who is covering the post during the sick leave of his Los Verdes party colleague Monseratte Guillén, 8 of these officers were already working in the service as temporary staff, so in reality there are 18 new additions. Adding a useful boost to the police, despite crime figures falling, 10 of the new 18 officers will be responsible for surveillance in the neighbourhoods of the city, with some of those already serving the city moving into roles in the surrounding villages, an area much criticised for a lack of policing in

A

recent months. The remaining 6 officers will be stationed on the Orihuela Costa, where there will now be a team of 40 officers, whilst the councillor also states that “We are seeking the possibility of two or three agents to form a special unit to monitor compliance with the bylaws”. The 26 newly recruited officers were presented with their gold badges of the city in a ceremony held in Orihuela on Friday. The acting Mayor, Antonio Zapata, congratulated and welcomed the new officers and stressed the need for policing at a local level, explain “You are the tools for a peaceful coexistence between neighbours and this is achieved by not only fines but by trying to work closely with those neighbours”.

COSTA RESIDENTS GROUP PROMOTING LOCAL INTERESTS Residents of Orihuela Costa got together last Friday to formalised the establishment of the Federation of Orihuela Costa. Local businessman Félix Arenas was elected to the chair.

Snr Arenas said that the Association had been formed in order to "better promote the interests of the Orihuela Costa to the Orihuela Government.” He said that the services currently being provided to coastal residents had sharply deteriorated to the extent that many were now, at

the very best, only minimal and most certainly inadequate. The Federation of the Orihuela Costa will be completely non political but it will vigorously defend the interests of the coast insisting that its residents are provided with a fair and proportional allocation of the budget. It will seek to improve services, parks, cleaning, repair and maintenance of streets and the provision of sports and cultural activities. These will be the primary objectives of the Federation. The coast currently accounts for 60% of the municipal budgets, but receives in return a meager 6.5%, creating a disproportional and unjust situation. Therefore, one of the first things that the City Council will be asked by the Federation is exactly what it is going to do to better manage the Orihuela Costa.

FAMILY BENEFITS Barcelona´s El Prat airport now has a special filter lane through security for passengers travelling with young children, with the aim of reducing waiting times for families. According to the airport operator Aena, the new filter is located in terminal 1, on the left hand side of the usual security checks. The fasttrack route was already available for those with mobility problems, but this additional allowance is hoped to reduce the stress for others waiting to board their flights.

COLOUR ME BAD Whilst the summer drought has caused problems for countless crops across Spain, the unusually high temperatures of October are delaying citrus fruit from colouring in areas such as Cordoba, Seville and Huelva. As temperatures reached 35 degrees, rains have been scarce, apart from a few sudden downpours. Initial assessments reveal fruit with higher calibres than usual, which consequently results in a lower yield, although the quality is good, with a good level of sugar and juice.

A REMOTE LIFE SAVER A Belgian engineering student has presented his design at the University of Delft in the Netherlands this week, which could revolutionise the first response live-saving emergency process.

Perhaps often associated with death and killing, this new use of a pilotless aircraft, the Drone Ambulance, is capable of carrying four kilos of medical equipment, including a defibrillator, oxygen and mask, insulin for diabetics and other emergency supplies. The vehicle, which is the only prototype of its kind in the world, can reach a speed of up to 100 kilometres per hour and can move so any location on as 12 square kilometre grid in less than a minute. It is built from carbon fibre and various components which have been produced with the help of 3D printers. It is estimated that each unit would have cost around 15,000 euro, but would “save hundreds of lives over the next year”, according to the creator, Alec Momont.

TORREVIEJA’S VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR HONOURED Mamen Mateo, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Health, announced last Tuesday that the Award of Torrevieja’s Volunteer of the Year would go to Caritas charity worker Rosario Romero. The annual prize, which is always made on the occasion of the ‘Day of International Volunteers’, honoured Rosario who has been working tirelessly for the Catholic charity in the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary of La Mata for over 20 years. The jury also agreed to recognize Mari Luz Martinez, for her work of over thirty years, as a volunteer with several associations, but particularly with the charity Afecáncer since it was first established in the town. As well as performing many of the administrative tasks she also provides emotional support to cancer patients who are terminally ill, showing great compassion and professionalism in her voluntary work. Martinez has worked for three decades with other groups such as Nueva Fraternidad, (New Brotherhood), with which she has travelled to Rwanda as a volunteer to support fieldworkers with various health and educational projects aimed at improving the conditions for population groups who are at high risk. However, the Volunteer of the Year, Rosario Romero, arrived in La Mata 22 years ago, since which time she has worked with all local volunteer groups including the Brotherhood of Our Lady of

A VARIETY OF MEDICS IN OUR TV REVIEW We start this week with a bit of old news, although it´s only actually a week old, but with so much to talk about regarding the Remembrance build-up, there was no room to squeeze this is. It is however of huge significance, especially for fans of a certain hospital based drama on the BBC. The news is that Holby City fans will be delighted that Henrik Hansenn, Oliver Valentine and Estelle ‘Essie’ Harrison are all set to return to our screens next year. It wasn´t that long ago we saw Essie head off to Germany to find her family, but Oliver went to find himself after the death of his new wife Tara Lo, his twin sister being killed not too long before that, and the news, according to James Anderson who plays Ollie, is that “he’s older now - wiser, even - and I can't wait to get stuck into playing this altogether more grown up Valentine to the one I left behind. Step up Oliver 2.0”. As for Mr Hansenn, we last saw the former CEO and director of surgery choose family over medicine when he returned to Sweden to spend time with his son and grandson. However, Hanssen’s desire to bring his surgical brilliance back to Holby has got the better of him and Guy Henry explains how much he missed playing his character: “I'm so pleased to be reunited with Mr. Hanssen, he's such a weird and wonderful character to play - I've missed him”. Of course, as for the role that he will play on his return, as well as the stories we will see

his masterful manner lord over through the corridors of Holby, we will just have to wait and seen, or, as Guy puts it, “We don't know what dark acts may have befallen Henrik during his time away in Sweden but I do believe that, when he looms down the corridors of Holby once more, his wit and his scalpel will be as incisive as ever! Can't wait - see you on the ice!” Whilst we´re on the subject of medical dramas, as filming wraps on Call the Midwife series four, the BBC have announced that they have already commissioned series five, which will consist of a Christmas special in 2015, followed by 8 hour long episodes in 2016, taking the nuns and midwives into 1961. But let´s not jump too far ahead yet, as we still have to get through this Christmas yet, and that is where we get the third Christmas special, with series four following on directly in January 2015. Joining the regular cast are Linda Bassett (East is East, Lark Rise to Candleford) as Nurse Phyllis Crane and Charlotte Ritchie (Life Of Riley, Fresh Meat) as Nurse Barbara Gilbert. Vanessa Redgrave will appear for the first time as Jennifer Worth in the Christmas special episode. As for light entertainment, ITV has commissioned a brand new entertainment series, Get Your Act Together, which will see some of our best-loved stars join forces with some of the world’s most talented variety acts to put on a unique performance. Each week, host Stephen Mulhern will be joined by five different celebrities who battle it out to learn jaw dropping talents, from contortion to fire dancing, ventriloquism to acrobatics, juggling to plate spinning. Alongside them are award winning acts, including Penn and Teller, Catwall Acrobats, Les Beaux Frere, Shaolin Monks, Circus of Men, Les Bubb mime and The Moscow State Circus. If it´s variety you´re looking for then you might also be pleased to know that Michael McIntyre is to host The Royal Variety Performance 2014, which takes place on Thursday the 13th of November, to be screened on ITV in December. Global superstars Dame Shirley Bassey and Bette Midler will be joined by the likes of Demi Lovato and Ed Sheeran,

in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Also taking part in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of music, theatre, comedy and dance will be BRIT Award winner Ellie Goulding, Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro, the cast of multi-award winning musical Miss Saigon, critically acclaimed tenor Alfie Boe and Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Inala. Comedy comes from acclaimed stand-up Russell Kane, British Comedy Award winner Jack Whitehall, Sarah Millican and Trevor Noah, and the magical talents of Stephen Mulhern. David Attenborough explores how animals attempt to overcome the challenges that face them at each of the six crucial stages of life as they strive towards ultimate success - passing on their genes. To gain power an animal must find a way to rise through the ranks of its society as the most powerful have best access to food and water, and they are also the most attractive to the opposite sex. An orphaned, friendless, young chimp leaves his playful youth behind as he attempts to climb the social ladder. His troop is ruled by big, aggressive males. His first attempt to join them ends in a beating, but making his first friend changes his life. In meerkat society knowledge is power, and knowing how to deal with a venomous snake is essential for any youngster who wants to be a player in its world. The only way is to fight, and beat, the 8foot, ruling male in a brutal boxing match. 23:00 BBC News at Ten. 23:25 BBC Regional News. Few young, male kangaroos will ever get to occupy the top spot in their world. The only way is to fight, and beat, the 8foot, ruling male in a brutal boxing match. 18:45 BBC News. 19:05 BBC Regional News. 19:15 Countryfile. Crafts of the Countryside. ESTRELLA DAMM CRIBBAGE By Ron Sheldon 3rd November and week 9 and unfortunately the match between Catorce & Lo Crispin was conceded due to the sudden demise on Sunday of John Henderson, captain of Catorce Crib team. Elsewhere, matches were played as normal and joint top scorers this week with a 7-2 win were Peter’s Galleon at home to Steve’s Steakhouse and for the Galleon Harry & Bruce lorded it with 3 wins while for the Steakhouse Kevin & Terry zoomed to a zero score. Hanging on to 4th place are Ayliff’s Galea ”A” who also had a big 7-2 win against Brian’s Galea “B” whose pair of Olga & Dave subsided to a zero score while 2 pairs for Galea “A” maximised with 3 wins each. All the top 5 teams won (again) with Dorothy’s Magpies staying top after their close win against Mike’s Peacocks having Martin & John falling by the wayside with only 1 win while for the Peacocks Terry & Maggie went 1 worse without a win. Hard on the heels of the Magpies are Brian’s Jaguars with a fine win against Keith’s Merlins who had Steve & Elaine on 3 wins while all 3 pairs of the Merlins just managed 1 win each.

Also chasing are Ron’s Nacho’s Voles who had a very close win against Jim’s Siesta Sharks who had John & Dennis in the pit without a win while for the Voles Norman & Ken relished their 3 wins. Up 2 places this week are Richard’s Ventura Ospreys after a close win against my Ventura Falcons whose best were Bill & Sue with 2 wins while 2 Osprey pairs also had 2 wins each. Finally at Mr Smiths, Alan’s Robins just lost out to stablemates Les’s Jays whose best pair were Ian & Jim with 3 wins while the Robins Jackie & George managed 2 wins. EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP - BLUE LAGOON K.O.CUP IST ROUND. 6TH NOVEMBER 2014. Hub Hyenas Ale House Busters Misfits Junction Jackals Tavern Drivers Breakaways Bears Pint Depot Queens

The Porter House. Que Pasa Kestrels Que Pasa Eagles Hub Meerkats Pint Depot Kings Junction Jaguars Evolution Gogarty's Bulls.

Highest Finish Joe Miller ( Hyenas ) 119. Some excellent darts this week, particularly down at the Hub and Sporting Life. A barrage of scores from the Hyenas and Porters in their match, Shaun Smith earning the Plaudits for the Hyenas, with Pat Abrams continuing his fine form in a Meerkats shirt. Surprisingly, several whitewashes using a format designed to level a teams chances as much as possible. Good news however, for all losing teams in the first round. The committee recognising half of the league will not be playing competitively the next round ( December 11th ) it is proposed therefore to include first round losers in a supplementary competition using the same format, but subject to the draw, with Division 1 and 2 teams left, a handicap system will be introduced. This has yet to be determined, but an example could be Porters versus Pint Depot Queens whereby the Queens may be given a three leg start, other teams may start all square etc. Junction Jackels were one of the sides enjoying their winning seven legs without reply entertaining the Pint Depot Kings. Steph Simpson got the hosts off like a train with 2x140 and a clever 82 to leave the next player in the triple, Keith King to finish. Unfortunately the veteran shooter had an elderly moment and left 5, much to the dismay of his team mates and the delight of the Kings. Many, many darts later it was Simpson to polish off the 701 points, for an early lead. King redeemed himself in the second, taking out D16 to go two up. Kenny Wilkinson made it 3-0 on D8. King top scoring in the leg with 114. Dave Wright livened up the visitors with an excellent 135, not enough however as Andy Gildea 100 and then John Osbourne finishing off the remaining 56 with S16 and D20 for 4-0. Big Jim Scott starred for the Jackals in the fifth, nailing D16 after a fine 122. The Gildea and Osbourne double act figured again in the next with the former hitting another ton. Osbourne managing the all important double. The K.O.Cup format can produce a thirteen leg result, which the kings could only hope for at 6-0 down. John Broadhead gave them some hope with a 125, but that was to be the highlight of the 701, excepting the finish from Micky Jones to complete the rout. Ray Sandersons Porterhouse side could only muster three legs from the ten played against a side with eyes on a League and Cup double

Sonya Cooper and Leah Chesworth serving the Meercats prior to their match

and yet to be beaten. It started off well enough for the wise old Sanderson who slipped in Yvonne Rouffignac, with Sid Cross and Peter Ayres for the first triple. It paid off as Cross was the only three figure scorer, Rouffignac nailing D2 for the first. Cross's 100 and 140 looked enough but a ton from Nick Spicer and another from Joe Hawkins plus D10 levelled soon after. Ayres 133 in the third was countered by another 100 from Hawkins, Spicer taking out D4 for 2-1. Shaun Smith flexed his ample muscles with a 140 in the fourth followed by a tidy 84 out ( S20,S14,Bull ). Smith was at it again with a 140, but it was Joe Miller this time tidying up for the Hyenas with a 119 out ( T20,S19,D20 ). I wouldn't advise going that way as a single 20 first dart leaves you unable to finish in two. The first dart should be a T19, meaning a finish can be achieved if a single 19 is hit. Joe will argue he finished, so whats the difference. However, its all about percentages. Sanderson pulled one back in the sixth to get the Porters back into the tie. A ton from Cross followed but it was cancelled by a similar score from Hawkins who also nailed D2 to increase the lead to 3. Ayres D20 got the Porters back into the game, but Spicer 140 followed by Smith on D10 completed the leg and match for the Hyenas. Good and bad news for their most Royals the Queens from Pint Depot. The bad news was they were drubbed 1-7 by the Bulls, the good they were all tucked up in bed at an hour never before known. Some good scores from Debbie Wright in the first, wasn't sufficient as the Bulls triple of Steve Woods, John Williams and Cynthia Jevons scored brilliantly, the latter taking out D10 for the first. Vi Turner's 105 livened up the Queens, but once again Jevons scoring and Woods D2 did the damage. Wright upped her game scoring well in the third, to no avail as Williams made it 0-3 on D6. Decent scoring continued in the fourth Kevin Prockter top scored with a 125, Richard Pattison completing the leg on D8. Prockter continued his form with 83,125 and the double for 0-5. Substitute Ernie Wilson scored 300 plus points of the 701, setting up Bliss Wright to go out on D19 for 0-6 at the break. An excellent curry ( what else from the Gogartys Kitchen ) followed, which seemed to inspire the Royals who rescued a leg via Ann O'Keefe on D16. it was short lived however as super sub Wilson took out D4 for the match. Breakaways are throwing some tidy darts this term and continued this K.O. Cup week. Two doubles, D7 and D10 from Mike Smith plus 3x100 gave the Bears an opening 2-1 advantage. Mike Snow's 85,81,81 helping. Jak Doggatt countered for Evolution, the lead restored through Jones on D10. Smith added three further tons to his tally, but it was the other Mike, Snowy who found the double (D2). Doggatt 85,100 and John Williams 100 and D4 totally out gunned the opposition to make it 5-3. Del Lister made it 6 for

Sue and Ray Sanderson the Bears after more good scoring from Smith leaving Jones D5 to wrap up the match for the Bears. Doggatt and Williams were outstanding throughout for Evolution whilst Smith was top man for the Breakaways. Cup Holders Meerkats strolled into the second round after a convincing win over the Misfits from Sporting Life. Pat Abrams was once again in top form for the Kats hitting 5x100 and a 140, a tally that so easily could have been 10+ but for numerous loose darts finding the one or five after scoring 80. The Kats were two up through Abrams D2 and Paul Durrant D20, despite some high scoring from Pete Jones, who rallied team mates Leah Chesworth and Karl Cooper into six 80 plus scores in the third only for 3 tons returned by the Kats and a second double from Durrant. Lee Maiden's two doubles and 100,125 and 132 in the next set of triples, accompanied by Del Kingsbury 132 and Graham Todd's 130 made it 5 for the visitors, leaving Danos Bobinas to complete the sixth on D20. Chesworth top scored in what was to be the last leg for the Misfits. Abrams 100 and Alan Ostrowski completing the match for the Kats. Division One league leaders the Tavern were surprisingly beaten at home by fourth placed Jaguars. They were 1-5 down after the first two sets of triples even Justin Hepburn's 2x133 in the second leg couldn't prevent a landslide. Some powerful scoring from Simone De Lacy 140 and Pat Schofield 140 was well supported by Wendy Haywards two doubles, one which was the winning seventh leg on D10. Stu Mitchell, Hepburn and Paul Birtwistle gained the hosts three victories. The Kestrels popped downstairs to the Ale House at Villa Martin plaza and came away with a close, but fine 5-7 victory. two doubles from John Lane 81.100 plus some tremendous scoring from Gilly Kirby gave the Kestrels an early 1-2 advantage. Lane figured later in the match with a further double, but it was Brett Badlove who did himself proud with the match winning double (D2) after some heavy scoring 81,98,2x100. Chris Miles D20, Kirby D10 and Heath Hughes D2 were the Kestrels other leg winners. I have to impart some sad news this week to our many readers concerning the Sleaths, Ian and Cheryl. Ian recently received the heartbreaking news of the passing of his 25 year old son Sam, who passed away in his sleep, from what is understood to be a massive heart attack. Partner Toni and six month pld Patrick survive Sam whose funeral is this week in England. On behalf of everyone who knows the popular Sleaths, our sincere condolences go out to you both at this very difficult time. Paul Durrant, League Chairman.

POPPY APPEAL BOWLING FUN WITH A DIFFERENCE By Harry Epsom Dubbed a fun day, on the afternoon of 30th October the Legionnaires Bowls Group held a bowls match with a difference to raise funds to donate to the Royal British Legion poppy appeal. Playing on their home ground at San Luis, the Legionnaires competed against their regular friendly adversaries, the Emerald Isle. The match was played in trips over 18 ends, broken down into three rounds of 6 ends, with a draw being made to determine rink and players' positions before each round. The draws were planned so that 3 Emerald Isle players played against 3 Legionnaires players on each rink. This format not only served to reveal the individual highest and lowest scoring players from each team, but it also kept track of the overall team scores to enable calculation of the rinks won, and the shots and points scored for each team. The players with the highest scores were Patrick Heaney for the Emerald Isle and Brenda Brown for the Legionnaires, who also happens to be the Legionnaires' Captain. Both winners won a bottle of bubbly and vouchers for meals for two, the latter being gratefully received from Mono's Bar and Casa Ventura. Pat and Brenda are pictured with Gill Burden, Chair of The Royal British Legion Torrevieja Branch, who kindly made the presentations. Booby prizes went to Ken Archer from the Legionnaires and Maria Brooks from the Emerald Isle, who were presented with bottles of wine in consolation. The team

competition was won by the Emerald Isle, 4-3, 123 shots to 105. The afternoon was a great success and much enjoyed by everyone. It was rounded off with a very tasty supper of Stewed Beef and dumplings, followed by gateau, in the Casa Ventura restaurant. The event raised over 200 Euros towards the RBL poppy appeal. Our grateful thanks to all who helped and participated.

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB

By Bobbie Sims.

LA MARINA ASTRONAUTS - This week we were up against Country Bowls Flamingos at home, the result was 6 points to 8 with a very close shot difference of 103 to La Marina and 106 to the Flamingos, great try you Astronaughts, only just missing out on the extra 2 points. 3 winning teams were Loreta Rae, Dave Willas and John Rae 16-13 Reg Jackson, Jacl Chorlton and George Chambers 23-20, but highest rink were Dave Mcgaw, Martin Butler and Don Harrison. LA MARINA PATHFINDERS - Another 6 points to 8 for us against Monte Mar Matadors at home, shots were 88-109. Three winning teams were Mo Taylor Peter Bailey and Dave Taylor 16-15, But there were two teams who won by the same 4 shot difference …They were Steve Douglas, Mike Stone and Captain Steve Hindle 17-13 and Mo Barker, Chris Green and skip Terry Perchard 18-14 . LA MARINA EXPLORERS - What can I say…….a mighty win by 14 points to nil, maybe it was the stern words from our captain, (although I don’t think so,) that made the difference against San Luis Trekkers . Scores were Ron Maiden, Wendy Latham and Bobbie Sims 20-14 Chris Webb, Alex Whyte and Jim Manning 17-14 Roger Stacey, Peter Parsons and Barry Latham 23-11, Frank Polak, Phil Pape and Alan Castle 15-11, Jim Reeves, Dave Williams and Dave Lewis 25-10, but just making top spot again by just 1 shot of 30-14 were Kathy Manning Barry Sadler and skip Bill Sims…Shots 130 to La Marina v 74 LA MARINA DOLPHINS - Looks like it was a tight contest against the San Luis Tigers for you all today,5 points for La Marina and 9 to

San Luis but the closest of shot difference there could be, 115-116, unlucky you Dolphins. Martin Butler, Cliff Rawlinson and Brian Duff had a draw 17-17, Reg Jackson, Jack Chorlton and Bill Jones won by 26-24 Dave Mcgaw, John Rae and Dave Osullivan 26-14 made it 3 in a row, well done. LA MARINA SEAGULLS - Well here’s a first, our Seagulls were the first team to take 6 points away from La Manga Crusaders on their home turf, (so to speak) shot difference was 77-120. 3 great wins from Steve Douglas, Mike Stone and Steve Hindle 17-15, Mo Taylor, Chris Green and Dave Taylor 22-18 but just squeezing top rink by 18-13 were Phillip Richmond, Berni Carr and Jim Freeman , good effort by everyone on a tough green. By StJohn Broadhurst Firstly I must apologies for my report not getting in the paper last week. I had done the report, attached it to the email and then in a senior moment closed down without sending the email. Oh the joys of getting old, so two weeks to report now. Monday, 27 October saw the Flamingos travel to La Siesta to take on the Apollos in the SABA Discovery league. There was some very good bowling, with the Apollos just getting the upper hand to win 3 and a half to 2 and a half. Picking up the points for the Flamingos were Ben Noke, Ray Emmett, Peter Dix 21-19. Sheila Whitehall, Dennis Birkett, Peter Whitehall 21-21. Jean Turner, Del Gunning, Karen Kirk 21-19. Overall shots Flamingos 90 (5 pts) Apollos 127 (9 pts). Friday, 31 October and we were on our travels again, this time in the CBBA Southern league, with the Ramblers making the long journey north to play the Montemar Matadors. It proved to be a fruitless journey and despite some close finishes we returned home empty handed. Overall shots Ramblers 77 (0 pts) Matadors 115 (14 pts). Last week we had home advantage in both games. On Monday, 3 November the Flamingos entertained La Marina Astronauts in the SABA Discovery league and after an enthralling match it finished 3 wins each, with the Flamingos just holding out for a win by winning the long game. Winners for the Flamingos were Pat Patton, Joel Fernandez, Brian Patton 19-16. Doreen Statham, Pat Emmett, Trish Dix 25-14. Ben Noke, Ray Emmett, Peter Dix 17-14. Overall shots Flamingos 106 (8 pts) Astronauts 103 (6 pts). 7 Nov the Ramblers entertained Greenlands Oaks in the Southern league. Home advantage didn’t favour with the Oaks winning 3 rinks to the Ramblers 1, with 2 games drawn. Pts winners - Ben Noke, Ray Emmett, Peter Dix 18-16. Sheila Whitehall, Dennis Birkett, Peter Whitehall 17-17. Mike Davies, Bryan Kirk, Dot Davies 17-17. Shots Ramblers 85 (4 pts) Oaks 107 (10 pts).www.countrbowlsclub.com

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB SABA ENTERPRISE DIVISION. The Sycamores travelled to Quesada on Monday to play their Pearls and came away with a very creditable 4 points. I say creditable because if you consider their line up, which consisted of most of their 'big guns' then we did very well to win against such strong opposition. The numbers were 2 rinks to Greenlands and 4 to Quesada, overall shots126 to 78 for the Sycamores. The Maples went to Vistabella to take on the Albatrosses and found the Big Birds on good form winning 4 rinks and overall shots by 119 to 88. Final score Greenlands 4 Vistabella 10. SABA VOYAGER DIVISION. Our Chestnuts met with the San Luis Vulcans at home and just got shaded to the wrong side of the 6/8 score line. Losing the overall shots by 100 to 104 was hard to take! Our best score was 31 to 12 by Joan Hunter, Jim McLean and skip Lin Miller. WINTER LEAGUE & BELEEN Our Winter Leaguers entertained San Luis but even with the home advantage only secured 3 points from one & a half rinks. San Luis took overall shots

92 to 60. Our aces were Cas Thomas Steve Gray, Mike Veale and Skip Lynn Greenland The Berleeners had a double figure score but could not hold off the competition SOUTHERN LEAGUE. QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties It has been a mixed week of fortunes for our teams this week. In the SABA Leagues our Pearls are still maintaining their top position after a good win against Greenlands Sycamores 10-4. Our Diamonds team had a tough game against a very strong Vistabella Eagles and came away with a resounding success taking the match 12-2. Our Winter league squad were away to San Miguel and in strong winds were unable to maintain their usual good form, only managing wins on two rinks. However, we still maintain our top position. Our Social Committee put on a most enjoyable evening of fun and games on the green followed by plentiful tapas. On Thursday we welcomed the HELP group to our green for an afternoon of bowls coaching. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB A tough away fixture started our bowling week on monday, playing The Comets at San Miguel who are always a competitive team. CAFÉ UNO GOLF SOCIETY. Great turn out at Vistabella for an individual Stableford. Standing on the first tee at 08:15 I was wishing I had put my long trousers on, but considering it's now November it's not surprising that the weather has changed. Although cold to start it did eventually warm up and the layers of clothing came off, making play a little more comfortable, although my game didn't improve much. However, putting the negatives aside we still enjoy the challenge, don't we? Todays scores were as follows:- Gold Category. 1st G.Hoy - 35pts. 2nd R.Rogers - 34pts. Best front 9 G.Benson - 17pts. Best back 9 S.Ashurst - 20pts. Nearest the pin - Nobody. Nearest the pin in 2 G.Branton. Silver Category. 1st S.Taylor - 33pts. 2nd T.Macmillan 31pts. Best front 9 B.Wood - 15pts. CLUB DE GOLF EL PARAISO Today a new club on the Costa Blanca opened its doors and had its first competition at La Marquesa Golf who also kindly helped to sponsor the event. “El Paraiso” is not a new society, it is a formal club that is a member of the Spanish Federation and its members will receive many discounts at local golf courses, especially a huge saving on Green Fees of 20% (and more in one or two cases) when those members play courses on their own – or even with another society. “El Paraiso” intends to run full Federation matches twice a month

QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE This is the second match of the new League season and will see Claptons playing for the first time, having had a bye for the first match. Missing this time round is San Miguel B team. The draw makes interesting reading with Mini Golf against San Miguel A and Claptons drawn against the Sportsman. This means some of Claptons will again be playing against old partners, interesting. The weather was set fair and looked like an early autumnal day in England as we set off to the first tee. As usual the course looked slick and the greens fast and this is how it turned out to be. Eventually the sun came out and left us with a nice warm temperature to make for good golf and interesting scores. Play was a little slow as we had a walking society in front of us but we all managed to be finished within 5 hours. This we see as being half an hour too long. Nevertheless everybody finished and the cards signed and returned to the recorder, we then made our back to Mini Golf for a super meal of chilli and chips, many thanks to the staff for their hospitality. Nearest the Pins: 4th – Barry Hopkins (Mini Golf); 8th and 15th Kevin Hall (Sportsman). CLAPTONS GS 9-6 SPORTSMAN GS MINI GOLF GS 3-12 SMGS 'A'

(which will be open only for those who are Spanish Federated) and also twice a month, El Paraiso Members only competitions, who must also belong to the Spanish Federation. The course was in quite good condition, although the greens are receiving some TLC and how we, the golfers, could help the green keepers by repairing the pitch marks! The fairways were very good, nice and firm. El Paraiso sponsored the NTP’s and a sleeve of Srixon golf balls went to Ryan Sullivan (helping to replace the ones he lost!), Steve Higgins, Les Cox and Nick Spicer. La Marquesa partially sponsored the main competition and we thank them for the donation of the Green Fee voucher for the winner, Jonny Rutgersson, who also received a voucher for the Pro Shop for his excellent 41 points. Nick Spicer took the runners-up slot with 36 points, only one point ahead of Lex Cox whose 35 points gave him 3rd placing. Arne Hansson’s 33 points was only good enough for 4th place and today the ties were decided by the Federation system of Lowest Handicap and not the count-back system that every Society seems to use. Our next competition is on 16th November and will be at La Serena where the Green Fee will be a miserly 32€ for those that like to walk and for those that require a buggy, add on an additional 8€. Bookings are now open on our website of www.clubdegolfelparaiso.com the Caddymaster on 661 524 101.

TMGS AT LA MARQUESSA

Well, it is “Firework Day” and the day Guy Fawkes was a naughty man and tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Firework Day it might have been, but the 30+ golfers sure as hell didn’t make or see fireworks on the course! Before we get onto the main report, we decided that today we would donate the entry fee to The Poppy Appeal and were pleased to hand over to “Mick the Grip” 170€. We should never forget the sacrifices those before us made in their day, so we can have our day and future generations too. We will never forget. All 4 NTP’s were won and Norbert Spaniol took two of the 4 prizes for his tee shots on the 5th and 17th. The other sleeve of balls went to Phil Kay for the 11th and the Vice Captain, John Eyre Wilson) for his tee shot to the 15th. The “Two’s Pot” was won by Norbert Spaniol and Joe Dean and both received 31€ as there was a carryover from La Manga. The Best Guest prize was claimed by K Persson with a nice return of 39 points. He won’t be playing off of 18 in the next match!! The Silver boys (and girls) seem to like this course and it needed 29 points for Pat Long to take 4th spot. Sandra Twentyman’s 32 was enough for 3rd and John Hillier’s 34 took 2nd place only one point behind Graham Smith who took this Division with 35 points. The Gold lads fared slightly better and it needed 30 points to give Kell

Aasebo 4th place. The top three slots went to a countback, all scoring 34 points and it was met with such mirth (sadness) that Joe Dean lost out to Dave Lethaby who came second and Arne Hansson who took home the bacon in this Division. Photos: group Winners, and Silver category winners. Our next game, Wednesday 12th November 2014, see’s us La Finca; so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Fixture Secretary on 966719604.

TEN MAN TORRY HIT FOR FOUR CF CULLERA.................4 CD TORREVIEJA ...........0 A trip to the picturesque seaside resort of Cullera last Saturday, not only saw Torry lose their 5 match unbeaten run, but they must now play the next match without a key player. Last season's visit to Aeria Stadium resulted in a narrow victory, which Torry manager Galiana was keen to repeat, but alas it never really looked on the cards. Martin was booked for a foul early on, in what proved to be a scrappy half of few chances. On the stroke of half time, Guillem stroked the ball home for the hosts. It appeared that Adrian had been pushed in the build up, signalling strong protests which culminating in Vicente receiving his marching orders, following the award of a 2nd yellow card. Although Cullera doubled their advantage on 58 mins through Oscar, Torry fought back well.

Substitute Carrasco bamboozled his opponents on 65 mins, but his shot was cleared off the line, then 5 mins later, fellow sub Cristian brought off a fine keeper's save. This begs the question as to why both these crowd pleasers, were again not started from the offset, and also why Alexis kept the bench warm throughout the match? Cullera added a 3rd goal through Marin on 73 mins, and although Torry threatened briefly when a defender almost conceded an own goal from a corner, twas the hosts who ended the match on a high. In the last 5 mins, they rattled first the cross bar, then the post, before Manugassent eventually added a 4th goal. This was all too much for captain Jorge who picked up a booking, then his manager Galiana was dismissed from the dug out for comments to the match officials. Another away div 3 match awaits Torry, for they must visit Beniganim next Sat 15 Nov, in what will hopefully be a return to winning ways.

HARD EARNED VICTORY FOR DAYA MAKES IT 4 FROM 4

CD Horadada .......0 Daya Nueva ...........2 Alicante Cadetes 2a No messing about by Daya who made it 4 wins from 4 against a very strong Horadada at the weekend. Goals from Jesus and Angel, one in each half, earned the points for the visitors. It was another good all round performance from Daya with Danni performing well for his shut-out. For me though Angel just sneaked Man of the Match. Horadada are a good side and will win more than they lose. So it is 4 out of 4 for Daya now, bring it on ! Report by Daya Dave Sponsor Segurlab

Please think about this before the Captains Meeting, which will be held at the Breeze Bar, on the 19th November, with a round up time of 20.00 hours starting at 20.30 hours. This week sees the start of the Founder’s Format, and in order to cut down on the time, the first game, the Triple, has been reduced to 1 Leg of 701. Captain’s are asked to read up in their handbooks regarding the rules for this Format. I will be sending Captains, full info separately, so please ring me if you have problems.
