LOCAL FUNDRAISER HONOURED BY LONDON

At a special ceremony The Board of Trustees of The Royal British Legion have honoured one of their most prolific local fundraisers, Michael Reeves, for his efforts in raising over 15,000 euro toward the RBL Poppy Appeal.

The award was made at the monthly meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of The RBL by the Chairman of Spain District North, Nigel Hails, on behalf of Ray Sheppard, Head of the Poppy Appeal in London.

Mr Sheppard said in his com-

mendation “Your endeavours have been the means of bringing essential aid and comfort to those in need. I am quite sure that, could those assisted know directly of your outstanding contributions to this work they would wish to be associated with this expression of our deepest gratitude for all you have done”.

In his response to the presentation Mike said that he was absolutely overwhelmed but nevertheless delighted to accept the award on behalf of all of the local golf societies that have contributed so generously to his efforts.

Under his rather better known handle of ‘Mick the Grip’ the ‘Poppy Golf Days’ have been a regular feature of the Costa Blanca Golf scene for the last 5 years.

PRIVATISATION OF W ATER AND SANI TATION IN SAN MIGUEL DE SALINAS The Partido Popular (PP) Administration of San Miguel de Salinas continues to violate basic constitutional rights with their refusal to disclose details of the contact to the private company Aguagest for the supply of drinking water and santitaion to its residents.

The Association of Neighbours ‘San Miguel Arcangel’ has continued to challenge this and took this very matter to The Síndico de Agravios, the arbitrator, a matter of ten months ago and their case has been upheld. The Arbitrator agrees that the PP Administration violates no less than 5 Articles of The Spanish Constitution by not disclosing details of the contract, when requested to do so, by representatives of the community of San Miguel de Salinas.

The response from The PP Administration to The Arbitrator has been the same as it was to The Association of Neighbours – silence and a disregard for the rule of law. The Association claims

this to be a deplorable and defenceless situation denying the rights of residents in having the full facts of this contract for water and sanitation.

The Association also highlights that the administration is ignoring the democratic values of transparency and resident participation in important issues and is mismanaging the administration of the community by failing to provide basic information. Why, states the Association, should these failings constantly require bodies, such as themselves, to be forced to resort to the courts to resolve issues like this? It suggests a general disregard for the rights and interests of the general population. The issue of the privatisation of water and sanitation in San Miguel de Salinas will continue.

How would you like to own 270 original Picasso’s. Well former electrician Pierre Le Guennec , now aged 75, claims that he does!

During the artists latter years Le Guennec plied his trade at the couple’s house where he built up a close relationship with Picasso and his wife.

“Monsieur and Madame trusted me, they always called me ‘little cousin’” he claimed at a court hearing in Grasse, in southeastern France, where the artist’s children, Claude and Maya Picasso, and Catherine Hutin-Blay, daughter of Picasso’s widow, Jacqueline Roque, have filed a criminal complaint against Le Guennec and his wife Danielle, 71, for possession of stolen goods.

The case first came to light in 2010 when Le Guennec got in touch with the Picasso Administration to certify the authenticity of some drawings. In his possession he had 180 individual artworks and a notebook containing 91 sketches, said to be the largest Picasso discovery since the artist’s death in 1973.

He claimed that the artist’s widow gave him the extraordinary treasure trove, which has been valued at over €60 million, and so, five years after the astonishing find, the trial began on Tuesday inside a court in Grasse, in southeastern France.

Although Le Guennec announced that if he wins the case he will place the drawings on public display instead of selling them, if found guilty the defendants will face a five-year prison sentence and a fine of €375,000.

The 271 artworks were made between 1900 and 1932, a key period in the artist’s career, and they include nine Cubist collages, six small oils, 28 lithographs and drawings of his muses Olga and Fernande.

“There are extremely important works that were missing from the narrative of art history and that highlight very important moments,” said Claude Picasso, who is in charge of his father’s legacy, at the beginning of the trial.

Although the stash of paintings and drawings remained stored away inside a garage for over 40 years, Le Guennec, who is seriously ill, explained that he wanted to identify all of his possessions with a view to his own children’s legacy. That is why he voluntarily got in touch with the Picasso Administration in all good faith.

Following the 3 day hearing the prosecutor is demanding a five-year suspended prison sentence for the septuagenarian couple.

The verdict will be announced by the judge on March 20.

NO RESOLUTION IMMINENT FOR PORTACABIN SCHOOL All those wishing to make their point to the Regional Education Dept are asked to join the protest outside the school on Mon 2 Mar

Despite the threats of continual protests in the wake of the recently highlighted problems at the Playas de Orihuela school, the Valencia regional education ministry has not provided any firm information as to when the 13 year old portacabin school will be replaced by a real building.

The regional deputy of the Compromís political group, Mireia Mollà, raised the question with the government asking for clarification as to when the work on the school will be put to tender.

In response, spokesperson for the education department, María José Catalá, said in writing that “this school is among the new educational infrastructure planned to tender and for that we are doing the preparatory work”.

However, with the announcement that only the “preparatory work” is being done, any kind of resolution is likely to be a long time coming, which the Compromís delegation has described as “unfortunate”, on account of the centre requiring “urgent attention”, made worse by the damage caused by high winds recently, which Mollà says the government “continues to ignore”.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the regional education department will be visiting the Orihuela Costa on Monday the 2nd of March. The local government representatives from the Orihuela town hall will be holding a meeting to discuss the problems first hand and see if a common agreement might be reached soon.

However, prior to that meeting, the local government plan to bring the regional delegation to the school to see the problems first hand, at a time

which will coincide with the weekly protest taking place.

This will be an opportunity for anybody interested in the value of education, and the legacy of poor investment in the Orihuela Costa to show the regional authorities exactly what their lack of action has meant so far.

The APA parents and teachers association have vowed to continue to demonstrate every Monday morning from 8:30 to 9:15 on the road outside CEIP Playas de Orihuela, and will do so until Fabra and his government fulfil their promises and provide the neighbourhood with what they need, a brick built school that is so very essential to the education and development of the Orihuela Costa’s increasingly abandoned young children.

With those two appointments falling together at the same time and day, Monday the 2nd of March, it is hoped that the opportunity to convey that message will not be missed and the voice of the people be carried back to the department responsible for the problem, albeit from the safe and secure location of Valencia where they reside.

SPANISH REBOUND Iberdrola said a rebounding Spanish economy will underpin a return to growth in 2015, as the company reported a 9.3% fall in 2014 profits. "We are optimistic about the performance for this year," said Ignacio Galan, the chairman and chief executive of Spain's biggest energy company by market value. "We think the Spanish economy will be growing closer to 3% than 2%," he said, noting that energy demand from industry was growing at a clip of 5% in the first two months of the year.

CHARGES DROPPED A court in Granada has dropped charges against nine out of 10 Catholic priests accused of sexually abusing an altar boy. The charges - which included "sexual abuse with penetration, exhibitionism and concealing evidence" - were dropped because the crimes fell within the statute of limitations. Charges were also dropped against two laymen accused in the case.

GEOHORADADA 2015 Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches".

The pursuit already has over 6 million participants worldwide and locally, in Pilar de la Horadada, the have been holding a GeoHoradada day for the last two years.

GeoHoradada 2015 is taking place from 20 to 22 March where there will be plenty to do for children and adults alike. Organisers say they are expecting participants from all over the area including many from Murcia, Cartagena and regions to the north of Alicante and by way of preparation they held and initiation day last weekend which was attended by over 80 people.

The Councillor for Tourism, Eva Martinez, said that there was almost three hours of fun which allowed people to practise basic procedures for finding caches together with the exchange of gifts and surprises.

She described the activity as a novel way of getting to know the most interesting places around the town.

Everyone that took part was presented with a certificate of participation.

A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook (with a pen or pencil). The geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. After signing the log, the cache must then be placed back exactly where the person found it.

Larger containers such as plastic storage containers (Tupperware or similar) or ammunition boxes can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little financial value, although sometimes they are sentimental.

Geocaching shares many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting, letterboxing, and waymarking.

Registration for GeoHoradada 2015 is now open and can be made in the Tourist Office or at the Youth Information Centre in Pilar.

THEATRE WEEKEND EVENT IN PILAR The Asociación Pilarte has organised an exhibition that will take place in the Casa de Cultura at the end of the month, bringing together the theatrical presentations of Pilar de la Horadada along with San Javier and Torrevieja.

The aim of the event is to draw focus to the artistic heritage of Pilar de la Horadada, as announced by the councillor for culture this week, Benjamín Fraile, who introduced the event, whilst the president of the association, Fulgencio Fructuoso, explained how at this time we all need laughter and fun and therefore the event will hopefully become a stable part of the cultural calendar in the future.

The councillor went on to thank the group for their efforts in collaborating with the town hall to bring the event to reality, showing the artistic and stage creations of Pilareños through the Thiar Teatro and other neighbourhood theatre groups.

Fulgencio Fructuoso said that “we have created this show for the modest villages like Pilar de la Horadada, who cannot afford to enjoy large assemblies that only stop in large cities, but nevertheless can program representations with the same quality and with minimum costs with the talent and the willingness of local theatre groups”.

The group from the Torrevieja theatre will give a rendition of their “Soul Dance” show with the musical “Seven Deadly Sins” on Friday the 27th of February at 22:00. The group's director, Oscar Torregrosa, stressed that this is a musical suitable for all audiences which can be enjoyed through music in a fun representation created in full by this

group of young people formed of Torrevejenses aged 12 to 22 years.

Comedy will take over on the Saturday and Sunday, with the San Javier theatre group performing “Crazy in Love” on Saturday the 28th of February at 21:30, whilst the Thiar Teatro group will close the event on Sunday the 1st of March with their representation of “Not Now, Darling”, a work that has been well received by the Pilareño audiences when performed already at the Casa de Cultura.

Hitting back at rumours and speculation that have started to spread in the election build up, the Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, would like to confirm that she is not charged in any cases of corruption.

Scheurer explains that the courts are investigating the case of the Chiringuitos contract as a complaint was raised with them, but there are no charges against anybody at this time. Similarly, Scheurer has hit back at claims that her Los Verdes colleague, the Mayor of Orihuela, Monseratte Guillén, has “abandoned” his position, pointing out that he had suffered a serious heart condition that required urgent medical treatment and has been certified sick since that happened. Neither Scheurer or Guillén will be standing for election in May. Analysis of data for waste collections has been concluded by the Orihuela town hall, revealing that 350 tons of seaweed is now being collected from the beaches of the Orihuela Costa for disposal, compared to the 7,000 tons paid for in 2010. However, the conclusion is not that there is less being collected, but, according to the Councillor for the Coast Martina Scheurer, the difference now is that the seaweed is left to dry before transportation, the lighter load being due to the fact that the taxpayer is no longer footing the bill for the weight of the sea water collected with the seaweed. Previously, when the operation was run by a private company on behalf of the town hall, there were no checks carried out on the weight invoiced, which is apparently also the case for the 15,000 ton difference in residual weight from the 62,000 tons normally billed to the now 47,000 tons which is collected, despite the same number of people being resident and their continual poor recycling practices.

As part of the improvements to the Orihuela Costa the latest stretch of handrails is now completed, with others still ongoing, providing added security and assistance as well as improving the aesthetics of the area.

A full information leaflet will be created promoting the events, as well as an information leaflet offering general advice. The request was following a major sand moving initiative in neighbouring Pilar de la Horadada and San Pedro. The coastal department of Alicante has now allegedly opened an investigation into what happened further south as there was no permission granted to do any kind of sand moving work.

FUNERAL COSTS A British Pensioner’s body is being held in a Guardamar morgue as his family try to raise cash after the Government said it would not help pay for his cremation. Ricky Dunderdale died during a holiday to see his daughter. The 79-year-old Chichester resident’s family were left distraught when he passed away on the trip and now a second blow has landed in the form of a €4,122.61 bill, the cost of his cremation. The daughter asked for help from the DWP, however because the cremation would take place outside the UK, the government told her that she is not entitled.

DADDY COOL Spain's former king Juan Carlos has lodged an appeal against a paternity suit brought by a woman claiming to be his daughter, a judicial source says. His lawyers launched the court appeal to fend off the first lawsuit faced by the 77-year-old, since he lost his total immunity on abdicating last June. Belgian housewife Ingrid Sartiau claims Juan Carlos fathered her in the mid-1960s before he became king. He married Queen Sofia in 1962.

UNIONS DENOUNCE CONDITIONS AT ORIHUELA REGISTRY Orihuela is known for its rich history, but having one foot firmly in the past is not always something to be proud of, unless being able to boast that the Civil Registry is the only one still maintaining its historic roots, as the only one in the Valencia region where appointments cannot be made online.

As staff at the Palacio de Justicia are so inundated with initial enquiries that the service frequently collapses around them, now union officials are taking up their case and trying to raise awareness of an administrative issue that is causing long term problems for those who might need to use the services of the registry, resulting in unnecessary and unacceptable delays and unpleasant and untenable working conditions for the staff.

María del Pino Galindo, representative of the Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Administración de Justicia, said this week how despite complaints and reports from the staff to their superiors, “the Department of Justice is deaf to the implement of any improvements that would result in job efficiency”.

Galindo continued to explain how it is totally unacceptable that Orihuela´s Civil Registry is the only one which doesn´t have an automated system, such as is already available for health, doctors and for the processing of identification from the police.

The lack of such a management system results in an average of eighty people being enrolled onto handwritten lists that are under the control of the Guardia Civil officers guarding the facility, but with the workload already drowning the staff and the likelihood that the load cannot be eased until at least May, as the appointment of additional staff is prohibited until at least then, “hours of work and unnecessary trips are lost” which is unacceptable in this age of technology, according to the union.

The union also highlights the plight of many foreign nationals who have obtained citizenship are need to visit the registry to affirm their existence, “because they need to take the oath of the Constitution, which may take months”, or those with residence permits which have already expired and “come back tomorrow and then every day to see if they are lucky”. With many people forced to wait outside in the morning, in the cold and rain at this time of year, just to try to get an appointment, the state of the registry is a dark and miserable process for all.

With just four members of staff to deal with thousands of documents from an estimated 250,000 people across the Vega Baja, their efforts may go unnoticed and unappreciated by most, but as the union explains, they work long hours, often staying late and working well into the evening, without any extra pay, and with files and papers bursting around them, it is clear, according to the union, that the Civil Registry is too small to serve the citizens who both want, demand and deserve a service which is already available in other areas.

A recent spate of appalling weather in northern Spain has led to the discovery of perfectly preserved fossilised trees, which scientists believe could be 300 million years old – a period well before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. The high winds and heavy rain that struck the Cantabrian coast last week have washed away huge amounts of sand, unearthing the remains of the trees, which scientists have hailed as a significant find. Describing the trees as being “perfectly preserved”, Miguel Arbizu, a professor of paleontology at the University of Oviedo, said that they date back to the Stephanian stage, a period that predates most of the dinosaurs.

In fact, amongst many things on the list, there are 28 computers priced at 149 euro each, a projector for 90 euro, cupboards for less than 70 euro and, in case you´re wondering, the dustbins are a euro each.

The only complication is that you have 15 days from the date of publication of the bulletin to register, which means you only have this week to submit your tender. The headquarters where registration has to be made is now located in Benijófar, due to financial problems, which they hope will be eased by selling of these assets.

Strictly at the Bus Station It was a very late night, or rather the early hours of the morning. It seemed that after a very good night with a leisurely dinner, a concert and a few drinks that we would have to wait a very long time for the next bus to our home in the south of the island.

The bus station was deserted, our usual cafe bar closed many hours ago, the vending machine was out of order and what I really wanted was a long, cool drink of water. It was rare that we had experienced a time that was so quiet in Gran Canaria’s impressive capital, Las Palmas, which as Spain’s seventh largest city, we had always assumed was a city that never sleeps. This night was the exception.

We sat in the deserted bus station. Stretched out on one of the benches in the far corner was the shape of a body huddled beneath an old and dirty blanket; no doubt one of the many homeless people in the city who had decided to make the bus station a place of refuge until morning. It was going to be a long night.

As my ears adjusted to the near silence, I could hear the faint sound of lively music coming from the far end of the bus station. Maybe it was music playing from one of the many apartments in the area. I decided to investigate further, in the hope that I might find an all night cafe bar.

As I walked towards the far end of the bus station, the music became louder and louder, and I could see that the lights were on. Yes, it was a bar, and the good news was that it was still open. I could get a bot-

tle of water, and maybe a coffee.

Peering through the haze of smoke inside the bar, I could see many people laughing, talking and dancing. As my eyes adjusted to the light and dense smoke, I could see that many people were dancing in the centre of the room in what served to be a makeshift dance floor. Small tables and stools around the edge were filled with middle aged and elderly men and women chatting to each other. It was as if I had suddenly stepped back in time. I could see men, as well as women, smoking cigars as well as cigarettes. Since the law banning smoking in bars came into force, this was a sight that I had not seen for some time, although I am well aware that small bars, and particularly those open late at night still flout the law, when the owners perceive that they can get away with it.

It was traditional music and dancing, together with strumming guitars, and stomping feet that captivated my attention. It was a little like experiencing a small bar in Havana during one of those films set in Cuba in the 50s and 60s, yet with more than a hint of TV’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. However, this time there were no glitter balls, sequins, flowing flamenco dresses, or talkative judges holding scorecards, but an earthy combination of cigar smoke and sweat. Although trainers and jeans were mostly the order of the day, several woman and men wore sturdy shoes with impressive heels that gave the impressive click that their dance steps demanded.

Although I am not a dance expert, thanks to ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ I could recognise Flamenco, the Paso Doble and Bolero. There were others that I did not recognise, including one where several couples joined hands and danced in a circle, which I was told by one couple

was a traditional dance from Catalonia, the Sardana.

I watched the scene unfolding with an increasing degree of admiration for the older members of the group. Certainly, some looked quite infirm, with a few relying upon walking sticks. However, even they took part in the slower numbers, albeit unsteadily. In their minds, they had become young and healthy once again. What a tonic!

I felt a little like Doctor Who, slipping through a vortex in time to discover something new and exciting that appears only now and again, or maybe I am thinking of Brigadoon? I glanced at my watch; it was time to catch the next bus home. I would love to have stayed longer to witness even more ‘Strictly at the Bus Station’.

LOOKING TOWARD THE LOCAL ELECTIONS Politics in Orihuela is certainly not boring and the weeks to the May election will keep those interested fully entertained.

The Green Party have announced that all 3 of their government councillors will not stand for re-election in May, in fact, the Green Party will not contest the election at all under their own umbrella, which is not surprising when you consider that the Green Party mayor has deserted his post on full pay, and the green councillor for the coast is facing corruption charges for the illegal awarding of the beach bar contracts. They are principally responsible for the mess of the last four years, a wonderful opportunity for Orihuela in general and the coast in particular lost.

The PSOE have been overtaken by the dazzling left

wing Podemos who will decimate the PSOE and other left wing parties. The PP are seriously split in two and could soon be sharing the right wing with the increasingly popular Ciudadanos, so unless something miraculous happens the PP cannot get a clear majority.

Up to a week ago it was believed that Claro would tag on to a larger party to try to win one seat for their party leader Bob Houliston but this week they boldly announced that they would not form a preelection alliance with any other party. Despite the stated reasons in the Claro press release, most informed persons know that no other party can trust "Chameleon Bob". This go-it-alone stance is the death knell for Bob Houliston and probably for his party. Bob will not achieve the minimum votes

required to be entitled to one seat.

He will be eliminated as soon as the count is complete. All votes cast for Claro will be thrown in the bin, a regrettable waste of coastal votes.

CLR is the only viable centre party, it will also pull votes from the left and the right, the strong leadership of Pedro Mancebo and the undoubted talent of Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas will probably draw 4 to 5 seats.

Thankfully CLR are totally committed to the coast and will bring benefits to the coast that NO OTHER PARTY can bring.

There will be no outright winner in the Orihuela May elections, there will be a coalition. The left wing parties will not unite with right wing under any circumstances. It is a safe bet to say that CLR are the only party who will win seats in the centre and so will be the only party capable of forming a government with either the left or the right. CLR will be part of the next coalition government.

EUROPEAN TRAVEL AGENTS VISIT TORREVIEJA Torrevieja´s councillor for tourism, Luis María Pizana, was involved in a familiarisation trip by European travel agents at the weekend, hoping to showcase the touristic

benefits of the seaside town and boost foreign visitors.

The event was organised by the Málaga based company “Meet and Talk Forum”, in collaboration with the city of Torrevieja, with the main purpose of their trip to Torrevieja being to highlight the sporting facilities available, as well as those which can be used for corporate events.

The guided tour took place on Sunday with staff from the tourism department showing the travel agents around a variety of municipal facilities, hotels and other key locations which they feel will make Torrevieja a marketable concern.

70-YEAR OLD MYSTERY RESOLVED Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have solved a 70 year old mystery in traffic research: an until now inexplicable jerkiness when we steer a vehicle. The discovery may lead to safety systems in cars that can correct dangerous steering movements before they occur.

The ability to predict what a driver is going to do in the near future and to be able to prepare the car's system for this sounds a little bit like science fiction, and it would naturally be a dream come true for the safety departments at car manufacturers. The dream is now one step closer to becoming reality.

“With the driver model I have developed, it is possible to predict what drivers are going to do with the steering wheel before they do it. It is possible to predict how far the driver is going to turn the wheel, right when the person starts a wheel-turning movement. It's like looking into the future,” says Chalmers researcher Ola Benderius.

As a result of the recently published discovery, several applications for car support systems can be developed to make our cars safer. Smarter anti-skid systems and systems for fatigued drivers are two examples of potential usage areas.

”Imagine a fatigued driver on the verge of running off the road. He or she suddenly wakes up and reflexively initiates a very large corrective manoeuvre, a potential misjudgement that can lead to something very dangerous. Since we are now able to predict how far the driver is going to turn the wheel, the vehicle's support systems can identify potential misjudgements and intervene, which means a serious accident, such as the car travelling into approaching traffic, can be avoided,” says Ola Benderius.

What is the mystery that Ola Benderius has solved? As early as 1947, the well-known British researcher Arnold Tustin (1899-

1994) produced the first model for how a person steers towards a target. He identified a continuous and linear control behaviour. When a car is driven, this corresponds to the driver gently and continuously following the road with the steering wheel. This behaviour is known as tracking within control theory, and it has been the prevailing theory for car driving ever since. However, when comparing the linear model with actual measured data, some deviations become apparent, namely jerkiness in the steering signal.

Tustin saw these deviations from the continuous prediction as well, but the mystery has remained unsolved until now. Ola Benderius and his colleague Gustav Markkula got the idea while they were attending a lecture on neurocognition at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The lecture addressed the behavioural theory of reaching, which concerns the basic human behaviour when we reach for something.

When studying how we humans move our hand from Point A to pick up something from Point B, the speed of the movement has a direct relationship with the distance – the longer the distance, the quicker the movement. The interesting effect of this is that the time for the movement is the same regardless of the distance. ”We immediately recognised this pattern from our measured steer signals,” says Ola Benderius. ”It was a bit of a eureka moment. Was it possible that this basic human behaviour also controlled how we steer a car?”

With the idea in mind, Ola Benderius extracted over 1,000 hours of car and truck driving from real driving data, which resulted in 1.3 million steer corrections. It turned out that 95 per cent of these correspond with the reaching theory. Ola Benderius and Gustav Markkula had discovered that steering is not linear when the driver follows the road, but rather that the driver turns the wheel according to the special reaching pattern.

With this new knowledge, he was able to develop a mathematical model that can explain many observed steering behaviours, which means that the driver response to different situations can be predicted before it occurs. Ola Benderius believes the discovery will have an impact on an entire research field. ”This might completely change how we regard human control of vehicles, crafts and vessels. I hope and believe that many researchers will utilise the findings and start to think in new ways. Control behaviour has traditionally been studied on the basis of control theory and technical systems.

GLOW IN THE DARK NISSAN LEAF Nissan in Europe has become the first manufacturer to apply glow-in-the-dark car paint to showcase how its allelectric LEAF is helping more and more people convert to solar energy at home.

Nissan worked with inventor, Hamish Scott, creator of STARPATH, which is a spray-applied coating that absorbs UV energy during the day so that it glows for between eight and 10 hours when the sun goes down.

While glowing car paint is already available, the bespoke, ultravioletenergized paint created especially for Nissan is unique thanks to its secret formula made up of entirely organic materials. It contains a rare natural earth product called Strontium Aluminate, which is solid, odorless and chemically and biologically inert.

Nissan’s glow-in-the-dar paint, if made commercially available, would last for 25 years.

A CHALLENGING ROLE FOR AN ASSISTANT The councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, wants to clarify the situation regarding her position and future, after it was erroneously reported in a few other news outlets that she is to leave her current position, and stand in the next municipal elections.

The reality of the situation is actually the opposite, as reported by The Leader, the councillor is not standing down from her position and is still very much holding her post within the local government team, but once this term is over, it is then that she will be standing down, and she will not be standing in the elections in May. However, continuing with the story of the team currently residing in the coastal town hall, we also caught up this week with another member of the team, Scheurer´s personal assistant, Heike Schug. Holding one of the posts for which a councillor can choose their assistants, Schug has been by the councillor’s side throughout the term in office, and is linked to that council post. As such, once Scheurer leaves the position after the elections, Schug will also no longer be an active part of that team.

Having become a point of contact for many of the international residents on the coast, dealing with their day to day problems, complaints, criticisms and even praise, Schug has become one of the faces of the government.

The challenges the role has brought, as well as the passion injected into the post, are evident from how Schug herself explains, “To be able to passionately get up in the morning, looking forward to another day, to be able to offer my assistance and to be there with compassion can make a difference to someone and is to me personally a grateful reward. The love for this area I have now been enjoying for some 29 years has taught me many lessons. To stay positive is one of the many important things I have learned. There is a reason for every happening, every challenge that life puts in front of us. Bringing us closer to not just to get a sneak peak on fellow beings that share the walk on our path for a certain time, but also to accept their path of perception,

learning and evolving. Isn't this what the quest of life is all about?”

“In politics, there is little leeway, to be a hardened ideologist.

One must stand in front of the public with strength, enthusiasm and true to one´s conscience. To compromise to survive is not everybody’s way. There comes a point, when the true question comes up if you want to compromise your integrity. Well Martina has reached this moment. It is entirely Martina's decisions if she declines to carry on for another term, trying to battle against the odds and to overcome the constant disheartening attacks by others.

Although there is no doubt that Scheurer and Schug will be missed by many, a changing future was always inevitable, as Schug concluded, “I accepted the challenge, knowing that one day someone new will continue in my footsteps”.

ORIHUELA’S PALMS TO BE INDIVIDUALLY MONITORED Orihuela’s Councillor for the Environment, Manuel Gallud, has introduced a new computer application that will individually map and allow the monitoring of every single palm tree in the region.

Each palm will be recorded in a council database showing exact location, age, height and girth, as well as its health and condition with specific reference to any blight or infestation that it might be suffering.

The intention was that this plan will quickly become "a functional and dynamic framework that will allow staff to prioritise their actions enabling far better allocation of resources, equipment and manpower," said Gallud.

The idea of a ‘Palm Map’ was first attempted by Orihuela Council back in 2006 when the authorities approached the University Miguel Hernández to build a Palm geolocation system. However the procedure was not completely developed. But now building on that initial proposal, using much of the information originally compiled, a new database has now been developed which will allow better preservation of the region’s Palm trees by way of up to date information.

To implement the programme workers will carry a digital tablet on which they will have access to the application. As they deal with a specific palm they will be able to geotag each tree and report it’s status, the details of which will be automatically updated in the base program.

This will allow better coordinated actions in the treatment and maintenance of Palms by those operating the Department based system, especially with the treatment of pests", said Gallud.

The company that developed the application will now spend the next two weeks training municipal staff on the operation of this new system. This will be the first phase of the implementation of a groundbreaking system that will control future parks and gardens and all woodland in the municipality.

FILLING PILAR’S STREETS WITH COLOUR What a great success was the children's carnival, in attracting hundreds of children and revitalizing trade over the weekend in Pilar de la Horadada.

The wonderful costume colours and the high spirits of all the participants filled the streets throughout the weekend. The joy was particularly evident on Saturday morning when all of the activities were aimed at the children, with painting workshops, masks, costumes and a very popular bouncy castle.

And then on Sunday there was the parade that marched along Calle Mayor to the accompaniment and rhythm of Muni's Band

with the assistance of the Municipal School of Modern Dance directed by Gertrudis Andreo.

We were also entertained by la A s o c i a c i ó n Motoclub 12+1, the Club Ciclista Horadada and the members of Vamos de Calle and Rhythm Bright the performance of which brought up the rearguard of the parade which ended in the church square.

Following the parade the square became the enclosure for a grand party at which children and adults enjoyed a fun day with

music, dancing, and a costume contest, with prizes awarded to the best adult, child, group, best family and best makeup.

The councillor of festivities, Asunción Sánchez, said that she was delighted by the success of the carnival which had provided a great boost to everyone in the town, children, adults and of course the traders.

SALES OF PROPERTY IN SPAIN INCREASES BY 2.2% ACCORDING TO NATIONAL STATISTICS According to the Spanish National Statistics Institute, the year-on-year sale of homes in Spain has increased by 2.2%. In 2014 there was a total of 319,389 transactions showing a positive turnaround after three years of declines.

The resale property market has seen the biggest year-on-year growth and after three years of continued declines, home sales transactions are showing positive results following property price adjustments.

Since 2007 when property prices reached their peak, the average price of homes in Spain has fallen by some 41.6%, according to the IMIE General and Large Markets Index report published by Tinsa in

February 2015.

The worst years for property sales in Spain were 2009 and 2008, when the volume dropped by -25.1% and -28.8%, respectively. In 2012 and 2011, property transactions in Spain still recorded double-digit declines, of 11.5% and 18.1%, respectively. In 2013 the decline was just 1.9%.

There were just under 200,000 property transactions in 2014, a year on year increase of 18.4%. Most of the property sales were of resale apartments. The new-build market showed a decline of 16.9%, or kust under 120,000 property transactions. 89.7% of the property transactions were for private housing and 10.3% of transactions were for

social housing. Sales of private housing saw a 3.2% increase in 2014, while the number of property transactions for social housing fell by 6.2%.

CREDIT RATINGS AGENCY FITCH REPORTS SPAIN HOUSE PRICES STABILISING Credit ratings agency, Fitch, have reported that property prices in Spain are likely to stabilise at their currenct leves, some 40% below the asking prices before the start of the economic crisis which hit Spain in 2007.

Data published by Fitch shows that the decline of property prices in Spain look to be coming to an end as the cheaper property is being picked up by investors who seem more confident that the economic climate is beginning to recover.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE) unemployment in Spain stood at 26.94% in January 2013. In January 2014 the Spanish unemployment figure dropped to 23.7%, a year on year decline of 3.24%.

According to Fitch, the decline in unemployment together with more available credit as a result of greater home ownership finance and Spanish banks returning to their core business of lending were indicators that the general economic environment in Spain is gearing for a recovery.

Interest rates are currently low and the cost of servicing debt is expected to remain manageable in the short- to medium-term.

SMOKING BAN HAS NOT AFFECTED BUSINESSES Researchers at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) have published an article in the Gaceta Sanitaria publication, detailing how they believe that the smoking ban in bars and restaurants has not had a negative impact on the industry, and that other factors such as the economic crisis have caused greater problems for business owners.

Leading the research were Araceli Caballero and Jaime Pinilla from the Department of Quantitative Methods in Economics and Management of the Canarian university, in which they analysed the impact on consumption in bars, cafes and restaurants of the laws against smoking.

To do this, the researchers used microdata from the Household Budget Survey in 2010 and 2011 and found that the law had no influence on changes in consumer habits of Spanish families in the hospitality industry.

Consumption decisions are more related to sociodemographic characteristics, such as the number of children in the home, and the impact on society that high levels of unemployment has caused.

For its part, the ULPGC explained that this work is the first assessment of the economic consequences of the law banning smoking in public places, which was fiercely opposed by the tobacco lobby at the time.

By Brian Hewett SABA Enterprise Division. The MAPLES got the club off to a flying start this week, away to SM Meteors, with an 8 points to 6 win.

Overall shots were 103 to Maples and 93 to SM. BRM goes to Di Lawton, Trevor Vanner & Skip Ian Brewster(25/8). Well done Maples!

The SYCAMORES were shaved to an honourable draw by just 1 shot, yes 1 shot; against LM Explorers. Three rinks a-piece and 102 shots to our 101!! BRM goes to Janet Webb, Glynnis Chapman & Skip Jim Oliver (25/13) SABA Voyager Division. The CHESTNUTS were at home to SL Romulans but did not take the advantage going down 10 points to 4.

Overall shots were SL 126 Chestnuts 112. Still room for improvement but BRM was an all ladies team of Helen Langois, Val Duchart & Skip Lin Miller(35/5) ; thank goodness for the ladies!

FEDERATED FOUR's. Our BEARS Frustrated 4's team were away to Quesada Leopards and gained a draw on one rink: 17 each. Overall Shots were 29 for and 76 against, The BRM goes to Margaret Dewar, Phil Lockley, Trevor Vanner & Skip Chris Dewar, what more can I say!

SOUTHERN LEAGUE - Div. A The OAKS had a home match against VB but failed to send me any results!! I hope it was a good match. Div. B The ELMS went away to LM Seagulls and came home with a golden win 14 points to nil. Every team earned a BRM but simply on shot difference the Golden BRM goes to Fred Tilley, Terry Lawton & Skip Mike Edwards(23/7) How good is that.

Div C. The CEDARS were away to SM Cougars and finished the week the way it started with a great win: 10 points for to 4 against.

Overall Shots were 115 for Cs to 97 against. BRM goes to Ann Butterworth, Margaret Dewar and Skip Big Chris Dewar. Great finish team.

By Bobbie Sims LA MARINA PATHFINDERS. Today the team were away to La Siesta Pioneers, total points were 4 to La Marina and 10 to La Siesta, a good win by Ann Stone , Berni Carr and Sue Daniels of 28-11 went a long way to making a close shot difference of 96-103.

LA MARINA ASTRONAUTS. A home game against San Miguel Comets gave us 6 points and 8 for San Miguel, with a shot difference of 100-101, top winning team were Reg Jackson, George Furzer and Don Harrison with 26-6 well done.

LA MARINA EXPLORERS. It turned out to be a 1 shot win for the overall points, 102-101 when we came up against Greenland's Sycamores this afternoon and 8 points to 6, top winning team were Hilary Cronk, Phil Pape and skip Bill Sims, 24-13.

FEDERATED FOURS. 6 nice points for us against San Luis Whites 2, our two winning teams had very good scores, but the best were Ann Stone, Mike Smith, Margaret Finlayson and Dave Hadaway 32-6.

LA MARINA DOLPHINS. The Dolphins were away to Quesada Swifts, looks like it was a fairly close game when looking at the overall shots of 93-107, but our points were 4 -10 which was a shame, but our giant killers today were Martin Butler, Cliff Rawlingson and Brian Duff with an enormous shot difference of 37-4.

LA MARINA SEAGULLS. No points for us today, our home game against the Greenlands Elms ended up 0-14 , with shot difference of 84-126, let's hope the Gulls fly higher next week .

LA MARINA SHARKS. We were very pleased with our 6 points against Quesada Swallow's 8 today, 3 wins each and only missing the overall points by 98-103, well done everyone, top team were Kathy Manning, Jim Reeves and skip Alex Whyte winning by 21-9, but I feel a mention must go to Hilary Cronk Wendy Latham and Roy Hart, as today they made it 5 winning games in a row...(hope I haven't put a jinx on you).

The league leaders had a hard fight against the Flamingos and it was honours even at three rinks each but the Matadors just edged the long game by 15 shots to take the two extra points. Two games for the Clarets this week in the Federated Fours league. On Wednesday, 18 February Emerald Isle Leprechauns were the visitors to the Valle but the luck of the Irish was with the Clarets as they ran winners. Sharing the luck were Del Gunning, Andy White, Dot Davies and StJohn Broadhurst 24-7. Pat Patton, Ben Noke, Karen Kirk and Brian Patton 24-9. Overall shots Clarets 57 (6 pts) Leprechauns 40 (2 pts). The second game was on Thursday, 19 February with an away trip to play San Luis Blues. On another windy afternoon it was the Blues who ran out winners but the Clarets did manage a win on one rink thanks to Del Gunning, Billy Price, John Palmer and StJohn Broadhurst 22-19. Final game of the week on Friday, 20 February saw the Ramblers welcome Emerald Isle Cavaliers to the Valle in a CBBA Southern league match. The Sputniks were away to Emerald Isle Neptune’s and it was always going to be a tough tester and so it proved with two wins to us and three to them. It was left to Rab Logan with Val and Tony Dalton to try and level things. Going into their last end one shot up, they unfortunately dropped a two to lose by one shot. With shots at 84-103, the result went the home sides way 4-10. Winning rinks were: Beryl Styring, Harold Charleton, Arthur Kingsbury 20-6 Jean James, Liz Combstock John Taylor 19-10.

Winter League 18th Feb. CBBA Southern League A, B and C 20th Feb. The Blues and Silvers had an equally bad day in their away games against Monte Mar and Emerald Isle respectively, both losing 2-12.

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties This week has been a very busy one for all our squads with some interesting results. In the Saba League our Pearls were away to Vistabella Albatrosses and once again in very windy conditions we were able to take 6 points to keep us in second position. The Diamonds were home in rather calmer conditions and managed a draw overall of 7-7 against Mazarron Mariners.

In the Southern League the Swallows were home to League Leaders San Luis Lions where we managed 6-8 to keep us near the top of the table. The Swifts were away to San Luis Tigers, where we managed a 5-9 result.

The Winter League was in top form this week against Benitachell where we took all the points, with our Berleen team posting another creditable win to keep them top of that league.

Our Federated Fours squads were both in action at home on Thursday with the Panthers giving a class performance against Greenlands Bulls with an 8-0 win. The Leopards were also in striking form, only conceding 1 point to their Greenlands Bears opposition.

Congratulations to our club members, Jacqui Johnson who has been invited to join the Spanish International Squad, and to squad members, Derek Sale, who has been selected to represent Spain in the Four Nations Tournament in Cyprus and also the European Championships in Israel, along with Lisa Bonsor, who has also been selected for the World Championship qualifying tournament in Cyprus later in the year, along with husband Pete and club mates Peta Rhodes and Bill Pain.

Entries are slightly down on previous years and considering the league enjoys two extra teams this term, it’s a little disappointing. One or two sides haven’t entered either competitions, with numerous valid reasons in most cases. From the participating bars point of view, the League imposes a policy of only using venues where teams have entered the appropriate competitions. Not only are absentees not supporting the League, but their local bar also. Nevertheless both events will be keenly contested up to and including the finals in May. Singles entries for both ladies and mens events will follow in due course, first round matches take place on 2nd April. The Ladies singles event will once again be supported

To clarify the rule appertaining to teams turning up with only 5 players, in the singles category a player may play twice, by method of a blind draw. Rule 7 covers teams with four or five players and legs they must forfeit in that particular leg. Further clarification if necessary may be obtained via Derek Kingsbury, fixtures and rules co-ordinator.

Onto this week´s league matches and all the surprises and congratulations must go to Division 2 teams of Que Pasa Kestrels, Sporting Life Misfits and the Ale House on splendid victories that really open up the chase for second spot. Misfits imposed a fifth defeat on the Jaguars at the Junction this week, placing them nicely behind the Tavern with a definite chance of improving fifth place. Pete James and Leah Chesworth did the damage for the visitors with three winning doubles each, ending the Jaguars four match unbeaten run. Karl Cooper supported well with a singles victory plus 100,125 and 133. Chesworth took the match and both points for the Misfits, going out in style on 88. Nice one Leah! Her victim was none other than Simone de Lacy who had pressured her opponent with an 81 and 100. Jaguars Wendy Hayward was outstanding against Zoe James 83, nailing 81,81,135 and D2 to keep the hosts in the game. Pat Schofield endured the vocals of Joe Brown, to continue her run of fine form to take the first singles on D19. Hilda Wilkinson´s 89 out (T19,S16,D8) was the highest in the match taking the third triples. Captain Tracey Simpson´s consistent high scoring wasn’t taken advantage of until the last leg of the evening on D20 against Sonya Cooper.

Que Pasa Kestrels leap frog the Jaguars into second spot after an excellent home victory to the Tavern. The Lanes´ John, Michelle and Harvey took the first triple, Harvey showing how it should be done scoring 81,85 and D20. Chris Miles D4 made it 3 up for the home side despite some great scoring from Taverner Stu Mitchell. John Lane made it 4 on D9 before Mitchell retrieved a leg for the visitors.

Russell Lyness extended the Kestrels half time lead of 4-2 in the first singles, Rick Cox D5 narrowing the margin for the Taverners and keeping their hopes of a result alive. Unfortunately Harvey Lane managed yet another double for at least the draw and point. Terry Kirby looked likely to take the match with an impressive 114 but his opponent Zack Green scored well plus D9 for 6-4. Mitchell looked the likely winner in the next with some great scores (2x100), but Michelle Lane was his equal with 85,100 and D10 for the match. John Lane made it a real family affair, taking out D8 for 8-4 against a spirited Theo Wils.

Breakaways retain their stranglehold on Division 2 after a comfortable away victory at the Pint Depot Queens. A 1-5 half time lead via Alan Strong D20, D10, Mike Snow D2, Mike Douglas D12 and Del Lister D10 just wasn’t going to be retrieved by the Royals although Vi Turner did her best converting D6 plus one or two other doubles taken when she was supposed to be scoring. Marie Dunne and Mike Douglas were top scorers up to the half way stage. Strong ensured the draw on tops, Douglas gaining the win despite a good performance from Dunne. The remaining four singles went the visitors way through Snow, Sarah Simpson, Ivan Jones and Lister. Several D1 finishes throughout indicated a different score line was possible so come on you Royals get practising on the all important doubles.

Ale House made it 3 points from 4 enjoying a home victory and third win of the season. Karl Mallinson came in with numerous top scores plus a couple of doubles, Bernie Whipday just eclipsing the licensee with a barrage of scores plus a double. Luke Yarnold added a further double along with some decent scoring. Jak Doggatt and John Williams were Evolutions main men, the former continuing to improve week on week and nailing a double to boot. Both sides are

Meerkats keep their unbeaten run to over 50 matches with a comfortable and very enjoyable win over Gogarty´s Bulls. An uninspired first half saw the Kats leading 1-5, Richard Pattison looking impressive with 100 and 121, Gail Todd and Cynthia Jevons winning the Bulls only leg. Dave Frews 100, 140 and Paul Durrant´s 64 out highlighting the Kats efforts. Pat Abrams made it 6 for the Kats winning 2 of 3 against Kevin Prockter who took the middle leg on D20 after an 83 and 95. Abrams a dodgy D3 and D16 taking the leg. A 133 from Brian Newton gave Durrant a scare before taking the match on D20 and D5. A real sizzler followed between Alex Nikolov and Pattison, Nikolov recorded 2x100 and a 59 out in the first, Pattison taking out 92 in the second after a ton. Nikolov opened with 2x140 in the third, only for his opponent to register 100,121 and a fine 110 out (T20,S18,D16). Great game! Lee Maiden, Frew and Del Kingsbury took the remaining three singles.

Meekats only threat to the league championship, the Hyenas, kept up their challenge with a decent home victory to the Jackals from the Junction. It was 4-2 at half time, the highlight being Nigel Elvery wiring D20 for a 154 out. Shaun Smith D12, D10, John Eyre D10, Nick Spicer D8 the Hyenas victors, Jimmy Gray D2, Phil de Lacy D16 for the Jackals. Joe Miller 2x100, D18 and D2 ensured the draw against Elvery allowing cuddly Spicer to win the points playing a very worthy opponent in de Lacy 81,85,95,135. Smith recorded 4x100 and 2xD8 in the 11th leg against Gray. Miller wrapped up the match 2-0 with a tidy game, opponent Michael Jones.

The Porter House maintain third spot with their seventh win of the season, this time versus Pint Depot Kings. It was tight at half time, 3 all in fact, John Crooks D13, Frankie “W” D4 and Matt Cummins D2 taking the doubles for the Kings, Ray Hayes D6, Matt Jackson D8, Peter Ayres replying for the hosts. Tons coming from Ray Sanderson 100,126, Yvonne Rouffignac and Ayres both scoring hundreds. The Porters took all 6 singles, however a shoulder injury to Matt Cummins prevented the last leg occurring, what was he doing? Brian Nash 100,129, took 2 of 3 playing Martyn Bynorth with Sid Cross making short work of Bob Hogden 2-0, to include 2x100 and a 95. Rouffignac won her singles 2-1, the last leg a tasty 95 out. Frankie “W” gave a great performance in his singles, scoring 120,121 and 122 but unfortunately opponent Ayres recorded 2x100, but more importantly D16 and D8. Hayes completed the match hitting D2 twice against Ian Sleath.

Finishing School: Question:How do you finish 72?

Answer:Many would go for T12, D18, but if you hit S12 it would leave 60 points which can easily be busted. My alternative is S16, S16, D20.

Any treble on 8s or 16s leaves decent alternatives without the possibility of busting.

MISSED O PPOR TUNITIES COST TORRY AS LEVANTE SNEAK POINTS CD TORREVIEJA ..........0 A t LEVANTE CF ...........1 Wondering where his team’s next win was going to come from, Riquelme Galiana must have been relieved to have his skipper Jorge, and playmaker Carrasco back at his disposal, following their spent 1 match ban. In form Levante 'B' were the visitors to Vicente Garcia Stadium, hell bent on reversing their defeat to Torry in Valencia earlier in the season.

Lying 2nd in the table, only 1 point off the top, it wasn't that long ago that they were chasing Torry, who have now slipped to mid table (10th), but following a disastrous run in which they have failed to score in 4 bad defeats, Galiana's men are now seriously looking over their shoulders at the teams below.

The game got underway in front of the smallest crowd of the season with Torry looking far more decisive than in previous weeks, they were pressing from the start and with an attacking formation of Obele, Carrasco and Rafa they piled early pressure on Levante. A good indication, we thought, that we were set for a good number of goals.

Levante were also creating chances but there was no real edge to their build up play, most of which was adeptly ‘snuffed out’.

Jorge was almost on the scoresheet after just 8 mins but his shot was straight at keeper Zagala when either side might well have produced a goal.

Oscar was called into action just 5 mins later and he had to be at full stretch to tip over a good effort from Nanclares.

Moments later it was the home side that were back on the front foot with a superb 20 yard shot sailing

just inches over the Levante bar from Adrian.

This was much better from Torry and a possible upset looked most certainly to be on the cards.

Zagala was in action with a finger tip save after a fine combination between Jorge and Alexis and then on the half hour mark he acrobatically turned Carrasco’s goalbound effort over the bar. The resultant corner saw the keeper called into action again when he was equal to a powerful header from Torry’s Alexis. As the players trooped of at 0-0, the Torrevieja changing room was certainly going to be the happier of the two, the only disappointment being they were unable to convert their domination into goals. We wondered whether they might subsequently be made to pay for those missed opportunities.

And that’s unfortunately the way it turned out to be.

Despite Torry’s continued second half superiority, chances for Carrasco, Alexis and Obele the game was turned on its head with just one defensive lapse, a 60 yard back pass from Cesar to keeper Oscar who completely fluffed his clearance. The ball went straight to Levante’s Keita who rammed it home from the edge of the area. 1-0 to Levante with the home side staring at their 5th consecutive defeat, but on this occasion one that they most certainly did not deserve.

Next weekend, Torry are away to Ontinyent and then in 2 weeks time, it will be Torry's turn to sit it out, which might see them slip further down the standings.

CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS This week was the final round of the Clubs Winter series of matches and it was fished on the river Segura in Benijofar. The winner on the day was Graham Leadley with 2.48 kg. In second place was Steve Collins with 2.36kg in third place Ann Fowles with 1.46kg and in fourth was Steve Fell.

All were using the feeder.

This means that the winner of the series is Steve Fell with 187 points and Tom Marshall in second place with 142 points. Well done.

Next week we will be having our first trip up to the Embalse del Argos in the north of Murcia. Pegs will be sharp at 8.00am on the bank, and we will be fishing 9.00 to 2.00pm.

The next Quiz night will be at the Bar on Tuesday the24th of February starting at 7.30pm- teams of up to 6 can take part and the cost is 1 Euro per person.

The meeting on Sunday the 1st of March is the Clubs A.G.M starting at 11.00am please try to be there.

Seasonal Golf Pricing Well it hardly seems 5 minutes since I was writing the last golf article on the subject of seasonal golf pricing introducing the winter offers.

The bad news is that the good times are almost over because as from 1st March 2015 we have the return of the high season price strategy operated by our Spanish golf courses hosts. Love it or hate it but this strategy will continue to be used while tourist golfers continue to pay the higher prices and believe me they are because trying to get a tee time at courses such as Las Colinas and La Finca in the period between 1st March and 30th April 2015 is almost an impossible task.

It would appear that Northern European golfers in particular flood to the region in the spring and return north in the summer months. This year is actually different to last year because the courses think that they have seen the green shoots of recovery and decided that now is the time to claw back some of the costs that they have absorbed during the period of crisis with the result that many courses have increased their prices for the new high season period. The tourist golfer from the UK is a happy bunny at the moment because with the exchange rate nudging £1 = €1.34 their golf has got a little cheaper despite these increases. Unfortunately the resident British golfer has to endure higher prices for their golf during this period on an already stretched pension in many cases and to add illness to injury they will soon be losing the winter heating allowance (I wish that the person in the UK responsible for making this decision and who thinks that winters in Spain are warm would stay in my house and go for a pee in the middle of the night).To put this little lot into perspective,there will be few courses where you can play for less than €50,including a buggy and these will only be available through agents such as Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. There will be a small number of special deals available during this time and we at the Leader will keep you informed of these as they arise BUT for now why not fill your boots until 28th February 2015 with some cheap golf.

Weather Watch We should see the end of the cold high winds that have plagued golfers in recent weeks and Monday could see temperatures of 23 degrees with the rest of the week in the high teens degrees and clear or partially cloudy.

27 turned up to the delightful and well-kept course of Alenda where we were treated to, once again, a very affordable green fee with buggy and a very much in form course where the fairways were in very fine shape, as were the greens and the course is a tribute to the green staff.

There was the threat of rain, according to some forecasts but it was pleasing that the rain didn’t come down even though the winds were high and the overcast skies, coupled with those winds meant we played golf in chilly conditions, but it is February after all.

No golfer broke their handicaps today, which is hardly surprising and there was only one golfer that achieved a “two” to take the “Two’s” pot and that went to Alan Rixson who took 18€ for his efforts.

All four NTP’s were claimed and Paul Farrance, Joe Dean, S Sonessen and Roger Nielson took home a sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels.

We had 9 guests and the winner was Klaus Peter with a very nice 35 pts on his 1st visit to Alenda.

The Silver boys (and Girls) had an enjoyable game and the spoils went to Sandra Twentman who took 4th spot with 31 points but beaten by a lower handicap by Roger Nielson, also on 31 points. A nice 34 points from the Scouse bandit, Colin Marsden secured second place but with the joint tip score of 35 saw Alex Goslan romp home with the top prize.

The Gold crew scored about the same and a 31 from S Sonensen took 4th, 32 points from the German Hermis Woerdermann took 2nd place.

This left a pair of 34’s from Alan Rixson and Steve Higgins to take 2nd and the top spot in the Gold Division with Steve taking the bacon home due to the lower handicap.

EVOLVE PRO TOUR CALLS IN TO LO ROMERO Golfers from 10 countries gathered at the Lo Romero Golf course in Pilar de la Horadada last week where they took place in the second round of Evolve Pro Tour Competition.

The participants included 37 professionals from Spain, England, Austria, Germany, Wales, Ireland , Italy, Denmark and others.

After 2 rounds the winner on +1 (145) was England’s Alex Belt who received the trophy and a cheque for € 3,000 from the mayor, José Fidel Ros. Dutch amateur Mitchell Schoorl came 2nd on +3 with Sam Forgan from England and Spain’s Diego Suazo tying 3rd a further shot behind.

The mayor said that “this was a very important tournament for both the town and for all enthusiasts of golf. It demonstrated Lo Romero’s ability to put on top class competition at their quality facilities serving to highlight the name of Pilar de la Horadada at both national and European level."

HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY

By Lubbertus On Tuesday 17th February the Society held a Pairs Texas Scramble at the beautiful Requelme Golf Course. The weather was overcast and cold with a strong gusting wind, which added to the fact that the course weaves its way through and around groves of olive trees, wildflower meadows, and large lakes made play interesting to say the least.

Requelme is larger than most courses with wider-than-average fairways allowing players plenty of room to play, which was just as well bearing in mind the wind. Added to that many of the greens are broken into several sections by strong elevation changes to which the players need to make a careful approach.

Having said all that, Dave Naylor and Dave Norris finished in first place with a very commendable 69.4, with John Macleod and Andy Shuttle second with 72.4, Kevin Wenn and John Macgregor third with 75.2 and in fourth place very close behind were Kevin Barratt and Dave Eadington with 75.5. The nearest the pin was held by Dave Naylor at hole 5, Dave Morris at 7 and Bob Oliver at 15.

When the day was over, everyone retreated to their spiritual home and “19th hole” at the Marinasol Restaurant in Cabo Roig where a very welcome and filling hot and cold buffet was provided. Everyone warmed up nicely and enjoyed the rest of the evening together.

By Mike Chapman We started off the week with a stableford competition but players were only permitted to use 5 Clubs and a putter. With the men's tees well back and in some awkward positions the ladies took full advantage by taking the top 4 positions as follows: 1st Benedicte Kruse 37 pts 2nd Olga Douglas 35 pts 3rd Maria Oldenziel 34 pts (c/b) 4th Rachel Leckey 34 pts On Wednesday we played the first round of our 6 card Joker Eclectic Stableford competition where players select one hole on the front and back nine to count double. The winner of the competition will not be known until all the best scores on each hole over 5 rounds (one card to be discarded) have been aggregated. Prizes were still available on the day as usual for the top 3 positions in each category. The days winners returning some excellent scores given the extremely windy conditions were: Cat 1. 1st Bryan Neal 39 pts 2nd Jan Svendsen 37 pts 3rd Ken Robertson 36 pts. Cat 2. 1st Geoff Biggerstaff 42 pts 2nd Rod Doel 40 pts 3rd Mike Chapman 39 pts 2's Club: Ken Robertson and Bryan Neal The wind had relented somewhat for our game on Friday which was a Dusty Bin (3-2-1) with three scores counting on the first hole, two on the second and one on the third and so on throughout the round. The winners with a score of 83 pts were the team of Terry Field, Bryan Neal, Jan Svendsen and Reg Akehurst who beat the team of Alan and Olga Douglas, Peter Dunn and Hendrick Oldenziel on a count back. It was great to see Reg Akehurst back with us and in the winning team after a couple of years away.

IN THE BUNKER WITH ‘MICK THE GRIP’

PETER ALLISS has spoken of his ‘great sadness’ that the BBC will lose live coverage of The Open Championship to Sky. Alliss, who first broadcast for the BBC at the 1961 Open, commented: “I’m just glad I am 83 not 35 and relying on working for the BBC, because I would be looking for another trade.” Sky cover golf’s other three majors, but viewers would not need to be Sky subscribers to enjoy the Open, with ‘NOW TV’ they can take a daily or weekly package without a contract. All very impressive, but it doesn’t make up for losing Peter Alliss.

PROVING THAT that you don’t always need to buy the latest equipment, Brandt Snedeker took the AT&T Pebble Beach trophy last week with a 9 yr. old putter (Odyssey White Hot) a 5 yr. old driver (TaylorMade Burner Superfast) and 4 yr. old irons. (Bridgestone J40.)

He dropped only one shot in 72 holes. “If they’re doing the job, why change them?” he said. His new swing, carefully put together over eight months with Butch Harmon, obviously helped a bit.

BILLY CASPER, who died this month aged 83, had a lethal putter and total self belief. Although overshadowed by the ‘Big Three’ (Palmer, Nicklaus and Player) he won 51 PGA Tour titles, two US Opens and the 1970 Masters. His 23 1/2 points is still a U.S. Ryder Cup record, and he also captained the U.S. squad to victory over Europe in 1979.

Casper once said: “I had a hand/eye link. I could look at a telephone pole 40 yards away and hit it with a 7 iron 10 times in a row. And somehow I understood the game, without having a lot of guidance."

THE ‘CRADLE OF CHAMPIONS’ in Beijing has produced 37 world champions and Olympic gold medallists, and is looking to produce more. It is one of China’s ‘Centres of Excellence’ which teach badminton, gymnastics, table tennis, and now golf. The golf hall consists of bare walls, no windows, and the Chinese flag. Nothing else except about 30 children, aged between 5 and 9, putting and chipping in front of mirrors for two hours a day after normal school work. Golf however, tends to produce unlikely champions without intensive training.

PENSIONER COLIN DAVIES, a former Staffordshire miner turned property millionaire, was saved from drowning on the paradise island of Barbados by Lee Westwood who was holidaying there after winning the Thailand Championship. Colin, who suffers from Parkinsons disease, said: “I started waving and shouting then I felt a pair of strong arms pick me up and carry me back to my sun lounger. Lee disappeared before I could thank him.” How typically British!

ANOTHER COMEBACK ATTEMPT failed at Torrey Pines for Tiger Woods. Grimacing after every shot, he hobbled up the fairway. There was a 2 hour delay due to fog, and his lower back stiffened up. Tiger blamed ‘deactivated glutes.’ “I tried to activate my glutes as best I could, in between, but they never stayed activated," he groaned. You’d think a chap with 14 majors would have someone on the payroll to reactivate his glutes for him.

DOWNHILL PUTTS, a tip: If your ball is 20 feet from the hole, stand 15 feet from the hole while examining the line and taking practice strokes. The eyes are the window to your mind, so when you're standing closer to the hole while rehearsing you'll be training your mind to hit a softer shot.

BILLY HORSCHEL collected about $13.5 million when he won the FedEx Cup and BMW Championship. He handed the locker room attendants at East Lake $10.000 and gave a cheque for $1 million to his caddie. LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY AT LAS COLINAS

The weather was less than welcoming when members assembled at Las Colinas for the annual Captain versus Vice captain fixture. An individual Stableford was also played along with the two ball better ball match. Players cards were taken alternately by Captain Graham Marriner and Vice Captain Jimmy Scott in a blind draw.

The beautiful course was in good condition but regrettably the weather was not so good. The wind became stronger, gusty and it was cold.

Despite that some good results were achieved and many of the matches were only decided on the 18th hole.

The final score was an emphatic win for the Vice Captain‘s Team with only Game 4 being halved and Game 6 won for the Captain but there were many tales of the putt that just missed that would have put a different complexion on the final outcome.

EUROGOLF SOCIETY AT LA MARQUESA On Thursday 19 February the Eurogolf Society played the monthly Stableford competition, and in celebration of the Feast of Saint Valentine we combined a Valentine’s hidden partners.

Congratulations to the overall Stableford trophy winner, Jenny Cheetham with an excellent score of 41 points. The best male score went to Malcolm Foskett coming in with 39 points.

A good day for Jenny, coming in first place with her hidden partner Sue Gillett scoring 77 pts. In second place the pairing of Phyllis Venables and Paul Manning with a score of 70 pts and in third place John Holland and Malcolm Foskett with 68 points.

HOT ICE GOLF SOCIETY In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services Las Colinas on 9th February 2015.

For this month’s meeting a group of 33 players visited the established course at Las Ramblas under the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

For 2015 we have joined forces with the Lo Marabu GS who play their monthly ‘social game’ the same days as us so we both benefit from the cost economies of scale for booking a larger group than would otherwise be the case.

The weather was cold wet and miserable which made scoring difficult.

The winning scores were as follows: 1st – Kevin Robinson - 31 points, 2nd – Mike Probert – 30 points 3rd – Grant Goble – 28 points Nearest the Pins – Grant Goble and Darren Holden We all returned to the Hot Ice in Aquas Nuevas for a hearty feed and refreshments prepared by Grant and his team.

The next fixture is at La Finca on 23rd February 2015 followed by Las Ramblas on 9th March 2015.

SPANGLISH GOLF SOCIETY In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services La Marquesa on 18th February 2015.

This was the second meeting of the new year for the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 18 players visited the established course at La Marquesa taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

The weather forecast was for rain but thankfully we avoided this on the but the winds were biting,making scoring difficult and wind cheaters were the order of the day The winners on the day were as follows: 1st – Andrew Drinkall – 32 points 2nd – Mike Probert – 30 points 3rd – David Taylor – 30 points Nearest the Pins – Andrew Drinkall and Bob Hewitson.

Best Supporting Act – Joan Willan Best Lady – Maureen Craven After the game we returned to the Spanglish bar, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their support.

Our next fixture is at Alenda on Wednesday 18th March 2015 and visitors and guests are welcome because this is very much a social golfing group rather than a formal golf society.
