In Passing ...

J

UNE ALREADY ! I don’t believe it. Surely five months can’t have passed since I took the Christmas decorations down. Time certainly seems to be flying faster as I grow older. The Summer Solstice on 21st June is now barely three weeks away, then the light evenings will begin to shorten and advertisers will start reminding us that there are only 185 shopping days left till next Christmas. As if to rub the wintry message in, it’s Midsummer Eve two days later, even though for most of us the summer has only just begun. Visitorland’s principal legend associated with 23rd June concerns Cadbury Castle, the large flat-topped hill at South Cadbury which was possibly the 6th century King Arthur’s Camelot Castle. According to the legend, the hill is hollow and every seven years on Midsummer Eve a door in the hillside opens and out ride Arthur and his men to water their horses at a well at nearby Sutton Montis church. If on that day you bathe your eyes in the sacred water you will, it is claimed, see the hill turn clear as glass and Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table asleep within. Other versions of the story suggest that they ride out every year and that they rather than their horses drink from the well, and one even claims that it happens on Christmas Eve, not Midsummer Eve – but suggesting that a wise king would venture out of his cosy hill into a Somerset winter is stretching credulity a bit too far. The origins of the story are lost in the mists of time but it has been passed down orally through the generations and no doubt been altered and embellished in the process. We may mock such stories, but they are compelling reminders of the significance once attached to Midsummer Eve in the cycle of the seasons. Many people also mock another part of our heritage that has been passed down through the generations from father to son, Morris dancing. They make ribald comments about bells, hankies and sticks,

about grown men dressing up and prancing around, about their dances, tunes and songs being irrelevant and meaningless in the 21st century electronic age. Yet Morris dancing is one of the oldest surviving English customs, stemming from male ritual dances in preChristian festivals. The dances and the figures of the Fool and the Hobby-Horse echo common ancient themes of fertility, agriculture and the seasonal cycle of death and rebirth. Morris is referred to in literature dating back to the 14th century, although the dances were not recorded until late in the Victorian era, most notably by Cecil Sharp. Now that summer is here, Morris Men can often be seen dancing in Visitorland villages, and an appealing sight and sound they make as they keep alive this English rural tradition. NN.

Letters To the Editor London Marathon 2016

Sir, Places are always hotly contested, so we urge everyone to take advantage of our Virgin London Marathon 2016 package. Those buzzing from this year's 26.2-mile challenge, or anyone who missed out, can apply for a Meningitis Now place at next year's event (date TBC) to fight the deadly disease. Independent runners have already started to apply to join our team and reap the rewards. We proudly provide a complete day, including a post-race reception with free shower, refreshments and a sports massage. Meningitis Now also diligently delivers a team package, so you can unite, train, beat or convoy with your mates/colleagues. Why not make a weekend of it or even out fundraise them? Every penny raised helps us fund pioneering preventative research, raise lifesaving awareness and support people affected by meningitis. Registration is £50, and we ask people to raise £1,800. We provide fundraising and training tips, and a free running vest or T-shirt. Join the London Marathon's unique atmosphere and help save lives and rebuild futures. To apply for a place or for more information, email ZoeC@ meningitisnow.org or telephone 01453 796023. Zoe Clarke Meningitis Now Events Fundraiser

What has changed?

Sir, With the loss of David Laws MP, Liberal Democrat and onetime chief negotiator of the Con/Dem coalition government austerity programme, twice a government minister in the treasury and then in education what has changed?! Polly Toynbee, writing in the Guardian pre election on Tuesday 5th May on ‘the powerful invisibles at the heart of the Tory party’, said ‘(David) Cameron has run the most radical government of our lifetime – cutting the state, sweeping away support for the weak, denuding local government, gifting millions to their folk to set up free schools, selling the NHS to private firms, privatising Royal Mail, tripling fees to make universities effectively private, replacing a million lost public jobs with preunionised lump labour. All this state stripping turmoil is disguised as sober ‘continuity’ Conservatism. I agree. And the recent parliamentary election in the Yeovil constituency has simply replaced one Tory with a Conservative: the continuity of Laws’ conservatism remains in Yeovil, as well as further afield. John Grana Wellington Flats Yeovil P.S. I have a particularly old and moth eaten hat, should Paddy wish to borrow one.

That the asparagus from New Cross Fruit Farm, West Lambrook got a thumbs-up from Emma Brittan and the local BBC radio team - tasting live on air.

That congratulations go to Ben & Kate Rendall of East Coker on their marriage, 22nd May.

That this month Jan FarrarBennetts of Wells will be expecting a silver something this month - if husband Derek and her can agree on the right date and he will be receiving a super book.

That Mark Urvoy-Andrews of Norton Sub Hamdon has been known to take a dip in the Thames when attending a rugby match.

That sadly, Mead Liqueur in no longer available at The Truckle of Cheese in Glastonbury.

That the family cheese bill for Wincanton’s Tony Pugsley is about to increase.

That Gillingham post lady Jackie Dyke-Bracher would have put in a much better time in the London Marathon if she hadn't been canvassing for her South Somerset constituency on the way round. That lacquered beehives and sugar-dipped petticoats made for a nostalgic meeting of the Queen Camel Tuesday Group in May.

That furniture restorer John Hamblin of Yeovil can be called on to fix all sorts of drawers.

That the S Club 7 Fan Club is alive and well - with headquarters in Norton Sub Hamdon’s Hostelry. That Kate Hill and Leah Sweet of Wincanton are concerned that they will be outperformed by their ageing Aunt Dawn in the forthcoming Race for Life at Sherborne in June.

Simon was glad to have put in five months training as tough as it was at times, with this sort of cycling there is no time to stop for a break and have a kit kat.

New Record!

Simon Beard, of Godden & Curtis in Sherborne, completed the 2015 Yeovil to Weymouth and back to Yeovil, solo single bicycle time trial, in 02:35:17 setting a new Yeovil Cycling Club record for 2015 and bringing it back for anyone else who should feel inspired to try. The course is 55.8 miles with 3,742 feet of climbing giving an average speed of 21.6mph. The last time this was done was 50 years ago in 1965 when Mike Jarvis completed the course in 02:29:39. The roads of course are much different now with the addition of the Dorchester bypass, roundabouts and the 'relief' road adding greater climbing. The original turn point too was different due to the build up of traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and one way systems.

In total, due to the generosity of local residents, £499.75 was collected, which with gift aid came to a grand total of £571, almost enough to purchase 4 boxes at £150 each, including air freight to the disaster area. For all your flooring requirements Wincanton

SJH Carpets & Flooring of Wincanton have just taken delivery of two new vans, complete with smart new signage, to add to their fleet.

Off to work – the SJH Carpet Team with their new vans outside their Wincanton showrooms.

Since their move to larger premises 18 months ago SJH Carpets have been able to offer an even wider range of flooring including a selection of stock carpet from the roll. Recently introduced and causing a great deal of interest is the ‘design your own rug’ service, where you choose the design and size to suit your personal requirements. The rugs are then bound in a choice of linen, leather or hessian. SJH Carpets are approved suppliers and installers of the popular Roger Oates flat weave stair runners – which add both style and a splash of colour to any home. The natural flooring selection that includes sisal, coir, seagrass etc., (as featured in many interior design magazines) has also been greatly increased and a new display installed. SJH Carpets offer a comprehensive range of flooring from carpets, marmoleum, woods, laminates and vinyls, through to rugs and runners. Ceramic tiles can also be supplied and they are stockists of leading makes such as Amtico, Moduleo and Crucial Trading. In addition to flooring they are Luxaflex Blinds approved main dealers. They offer a friendly and professional service and employ a team of their own professional fitters. Both commercial and domestic work is undertaken and they are pleased to offer advice on the best product for your requirements.  Situated within SJH Carpets & Flooring is MMS Soft Furnishings – so it is a one stop shop for soft furnishings.

sanding, just one coat of etch primer will prepare the surface for painting, no mess, no fuss! Choosing a finish is the next stage, wood paint comes in a variety of sheen levels; Eggshell (a low sheen finish with exceptional durability), Gloss (a tough and washable paint with a 65-95% sheen level) and Chalk paint (a flat chalky finish suited best for distressing and for a shabby chic effect). Due to a chalk paint's low durability a special varnish or wax can be applied over the paint to seal the finish, these can come in many sheen levels and even 'antique pine' to give an old and dirtied effect. Don't be scared to play around if distressing furniture, sand down edges and areas that would get the most wear, gilt the corners or recesses with various shades of gilt cream or play around with different brush strokes and even a crackle glaze effect is very effective for that truly unique finish to a well loved piece of furniture. Happy decorating.

CASTLE CARY still displays the bustle of a thriving old market town and scores highly on its number and variety of shops and services, as I have noted before in Visitor articles. A glance at archive photos of Fore Street, Market Place and High Street reveals that their overall appearance has changed but little in the last hundred years or more. All are instantly recognisable, the only striking differences being the open stream running alongside the pavement on the eastern side of Fore Street – and the absence of motor vehicles! The streets still retain the charm of the traditional small-town shopping centre, and some of the businesses have been trading here for a good many years. Martin’s, for example, has been ‘purveying’ fine food and wine in Castle Cary since 1875 and in the present shop since 1917. But the face of the shopping centre has changed down the years, partly in response to people’s changing shopping habits, partly to counter the competition from out-of-town retail parks, mail order and internet shopping, and partly to tap into an affluence undreamt of in the first sixty years of the last century. Castle Cary has fortunately been spared the nearby presence of a large supermarket and still boasts a

In need of larger premises, A Bishop Electrical is about to move from The Triangle to the former Lush’s butchery on High Street, next door to one of the Needful Things shops. into the adjacent shop before acquiring the premises next to Lush’s when it became vacant. Between them these shops offer a vast selection of home accessories, fabrics and soft furnishings as well as ladies fashions, decorations and gifts that can’t be easily obtained from the national chainstores. The 21st century café culture has embraced the town, which is well-provided with cafés, restaurants and pubs, some with outdoor seating that creates a continental atmosphere on warm days. The Place coffee shop has a prominent presence on the Market Place. Near the top of High Street the long-established Bakehouse coffee shop and restaurant is a popular venue for shoppers, while at the bottom of Fore Street the tea room in Denela’s bakery provides hot drinks and tempting cakes for shoppers in need of a sit-down. Room, recalling the niceties of bygone days and a far cry from the bland 21st century Costa and Starbucks. And there might well be others that I failed to spot on my stroll through the town. The three lively pubs in the centre all offer hot drinks and food too. The oldest is the thatched George Hotel opposite the Market House. Its datestone shows 1673 but parts of the building are reckoned to be considerably older. The Horse Pond Inn on the Triangle, formerly the Britannia Hotel, has provided sustenance and overnight accommodation for around 200 years, and across the road the attractive White Hart was opened as a public house in 1836 having previously been occupied by a cabinet maker. The bustle isn’t confined to the town centre. At Castle Cary railway station the former milk

factory opposite the main station building has recently been transformed into an antiques emporium and wine store, appropriately named The Factory, and the proprietors have plans to include a wine bar with tables and chairs outside in the summer. The factory was built in 1910 for C & G Prideaux whose main creamery was at Evercreech, for by that time the

railway network was able to carry fresh milk, cheese and butter to distant cities within hours. Dairies, creameries, butter factories and milk distribution depots were established alongside the railways throughout Visitorland’s dairy farming areas, including the one at Castle Cary. The red brick building with its prominent chimney remained in use for milk processing until the late 1950s, since when it has been put to a variety of uses including the production of stone fire surrounds, but in recent years it has stood empty and decaying. From the front the building

Martin’s has been ‘purveying’ fine food and wine in Castle Cary since 1875 and in the present shop since 1917.

appears to be single-storey, but it is built into the slope and has a ‘downstairs’ floor which houses the wine store. Behind the milk factory there once stood the Railway Hotel, with its frontage on the Shepton Mallet road near the driveway into the station yard. It was opened in 1861, some five years after the coming of the railway, and was renamed the Great Western Hotel around 1870 but subsequently reverted to its original name. Sadly it met an untimely end during World War II. At around 9.15 on the morning of 3rd September 1942 a lone German aircraft, flying just above roof-top height, dropped four bombs close to Castle Cary station. One hit the locomotive of a freight train waiting to depart westwards, killing the driver,

wrecking eight trucks and blocking the main line. One hit the signal box, destroying it and the adjacent goods shed and parcels office and killing the signalman. The third landed on the main road near the station entrance and ricocheted through the Railway Hotel, damaging it beyond repair and causing some damage to the milk factory and the nearby terrace of cottages. The fourth landed in the River Brue. If you’re planning to visit The Factory you need to remember that Castle Cary is the railhead

for those coming by train to the Glastonbury Festival. So the station area is likely to be very busy and crowded at times between 24th and 28th June and car parking will be severely restricted. Roger Richards.

Therapy (VRT), which is an advanced reflexology technique, where the feet or hands are worked in a weight-bearing position for short periods, providing an intensive level of treatment. VRT techniques were first discovered in the mid 1990's by Lynne Booth and within three years had gained a world-wide professional reputation as an incredibly effective form of weightbearing reflexology. It works on the same principle as traditional reflexology but often appears to have a quicker therapeutic response, possibly because all the anatomic nerves in the hands and feet become sensitised when weight-bearing, which may increase the therapeutic response. VRT was originally developed to help musculo-skeletal conditions but has subsequently proved

successful in treating many health issues, including undefined back pain, joint issues and sports injuries. Whatever the condition, chronic or acute, VRT can work on a subtle level, enabling the body to accelerate its innate healing processes. Julia trained with Lynne Booth and is an authorised member of the Vertical Reflex Therapy Network. As a specialist, Julia’s reflexology treatments comprise traditional reflexology, advanced VRT Techniques and hand reflexology, depending on the clients individual needs and requirements. Our control centre responds to calls for help 24 hours a day 365 days a year. We take referrals from a wide range or agencies across the District including hospitals, Occupational Therapists, doctors, community mental health teams and social workers. We also take enquiries from individuals and their families who are looking at ways in which they can remain safe and well in their homes. We do not have any eligibility criteria for our service – if someone wants or needs a Careline alarm, we

Golden Years - Elderly Care will happily set one up for you. As well as pendants, our Careline team works in partnership with Social Services and the Fire Service to install other sensors including fall detectors, smoke detectors and bed sensors linked to our alarms. We work closely with hospitals who are discharging patients but recognise that they need a bit of extra help at home, even if just for a few weeks. How the service works Our team of SSDC Careline officers visit the customer in their home to discuss Careline and how it can meet their needs. We liaise with relatives and carers if needed. If the customer decides to go ahead, we install the alarm and update our records immediately. 1. When the customer presses their pendant, a signal is sent to the base unit which automatically dials our control room. 2. The details of the customer appear on a screen, and a fully trained operator is able to talk to them directly. 3. If staff are unable to hear the customer they try contacting them by their phone or contact a neighbour, relative or other nominated person, or call the emergency services. The operator is trained to establish quickly what help is needed; they will reassure the customer that help is on its way, and liaise closely with relatives and/or the emergency services according to what is needed. The connection and set-up fee is £32.70 (waived if on certain benefits) with hire and monitoring £3.81 per week. We are happy to come out and visit people in their homes to demonstrate the alarm, with no obligation to sign up. We also visit local groups and organisations across South Somerset to talk about Careline. We are delighted to say that we have not increased our prices this year, in order to

help our new and existing customers. For more details: Tel: 01935 4 7 9 8 1 5 o r e m a i l : ca re l i ne @ southsomerset.gov.uk or visit www.southsomerset.gov.uk/ careline

Making The Most of Your Medicines - Part 7

THIS MONTH we’re taking a broad look at the common nutrient interactions with heart drugs. Pretty much everybody I see over the age of 50 is on one or more of these medicines - so if you’re in that group and you’ve managed to avoid them so far, well done! Before we get down to the nitty gritty, I’ll just say that if you are taking any of these medicines and wish to look at alternatives, please pop into your local health food shop or talk to a local alternative medicine practitioner. There are usually other routes available, so if you’re suffering unpalatable side effects or reluctant to start medication - DO talk to those who know

about the alternatives but DO NOT suddenly stop taking any medicines! This is dangerous and your GP must always be in the loop as your primary healthcare provider. Blood Pressure Meds - ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors such as Ramipril and Captopril may deplete minerals such as calcium, magnesium and zinc. Potassium and salt substitutes should be avoided unless under guidance from your practitioner. Beta Blockers including Atenolol and Sotalol could impact levels of zinc, magnesium and co-enzyme Q10 more on the importance of that latter nutrient under the discussion on Statins. Calcium Channel Blockers such as Felopidine and Verapamil can negatively affect vitamin D, magnesium, calcium and potassium status. Grapefruit, pomegranate and quercetin should be avoided whilst on these medicines. Cholesterol Meds - Fibrates such as Gemfibrozil and Fenofibrate may deplete most minerals, B vitamins, co enzyme Q10 and vitamin E. Supplements of Red Yeast Rice should be avoided. For the Statins, co

enzyme Q10 is the biggie. If you know anybody who has suffered from the common side effect of muscle pain, the depletion of this nutrient could well be to blame. Co enzyme Q10 is in fact essential for the energy metabolism of the muscles - including the heart. Not a nutrient you want to be deficient in with a heart condition! Do discuss supplements with your health practitioner. Red Yeast Rice should not be taken alongside statins. Diuretics such as Furosamide can deplete water-soluble nutrients such as the B Complex and Vitamin C as well as the minerals zinc, magnesium, calcium and potassium (except potassium sparing diuretics). Anti-Coagulants - these are the blood thinners such as Heparin, Warfarin and low dose Aspirin. Vitamin K supplements should be avoided and you will hopefully have received information about

the importance of keeping your intake of Vitamin K from the diet at a consistent level. This is because Vitamin K is involved in blood clotting, effectively working in an opposing manner to the anti-coagulant drugs. The foods Vitamin K is abundant in such as leafy greens, have fantastic health benefits so it is wise not to ditch them from the diet. If kept at a consistent level of consumption while your blood clotting levels are being monitored, you should be able to get a good balance with your medication without giving up a valuable source of nutrition. There are many nutrient interactions with the anticoagulant medicines including Gingko, Feverfew and Garlic. Please ask your practitioner for more information or come and see me instore for a list. That’s all for this month, see you next time! Jenna Evans.

Classic Jet Icons For Anniversary Air Day Saturday 11th July

From the mighty Avro Vulcan to the feisty MiG-15, classic jet aircraft will be out in force at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton International Air Day on Saturday 11 July. Several will help mark the show’s key theme celebrating RNAS Yeovilton's 75th anniversary, none more so than the world's only flying Sea Vixen, based at Yeovilton since September 2014. The former fleet defence fighter in its 899 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) markings will surely take many visitors back to when the Sea Vixen's unmistakable shape speared regularly through the Somerset skies.

Designed as a bomber, the Canberra became latterly a photo reconnaissance platform and this example is, like the Sea Vixen, globally-unique. In their very smart silver colour scheme, both jets represent British post-war aviation technology at its classiest.

Representing RNAS Yeovilton's thunderous ’70s era - the muscular and potent F-4K Phantom FG1 in its newlyapplied 892 NAS markings will be on static display. Two examples of the legendary Sea Harrier FA2 will also be on the ground representing the Air Station’s last frontline fixed wing squadrons.

Chartered Accountants & Tax Advisers in Ilminster answers questions from small businesses in Somerset

Q1. I am the sole director of my own company and will take a salary of £10,600 this tax year. How much dividend can I extract from the company this year without paying higher rate tax?

ANSWER: Assuming your company makes sufficient profits you can take out net dividends of £28,606 (90% of £31,785), without breaking into the 40% tax band.

Q2. My Dad is nearly 90 years old and has an income of £26,000. My Mum who is 85, has an income of less than £10,000. Can my Mum transfer some of her unused personal allowance to my Dad in 2015/16?

ANSWER: Unfortunately, the transferable allowance of £1,060, doesn't apply to people who were born before 6 April 1935. Your father will already receive the married couple's allowance, which is worth up to £816.50 for 2015/16. The transferable allowance is only worth £212 (£1,060 x 20%), so he is better.

SO, I WAS RIGHT all along. Yes, CAMRA no longer supports real ale. That is, no longer supports real ale exclusively. How do I know

this? Well for some time we have an occasional bleat in this column about the fact that CAMRA will soon trumpet that a pub has been saved, or that some cider has won an award, or that a perry has been saved from extinction. This is fair enough in my view - they are even beginning to accept the term 'craft' for some ales seen in pubs. We've been over this before as well, even though there still doesn’t seem to be any hard and fast rules re g a rd ing e x a ct ly wha t t he definition of craft should be. No matter; whatever CAMRA say or do on that subject will not change the outcome for many a brewery they will continue to do it their way. To reiterate; my own opinion is that if a brew has all quality ingredients (i.e. no rice or similar adjunct which does nothing for the final product) and is not gassed out completely and of course it tastes good - then there's the answer - and Robert is

indeed your Mother's brother. So back to the plot and the final realization that CAMRA is not just about real ale. Like good people, the better half and I renewed our membership (Gripe: the subscription has gone up a little completely unnecessarily in our opinion) but in doing so we get £20 worth of 50p vouchers for discounts at Wetherspoons and 'Lloyds No1 Bar', an outlet that no-one I know has ever even seen. This year, however, these vouchers bear the legend 'towards the price of one pint of REAL ALE OR REAL CIDER' (their capital letters as well as mine). Is this a step in the right direction? Well I think it is, for cider is part of our heritage, and despite the EU poking its nose in again and trying to tax the small cider producers out of existence (the small producer is tax-exempt up to a certain level) cider not only makes up a significant amount of alcohol consumed, but is also a growth market. This is even happening State-side where bars are selling maybe 5 ciders on draught and 60 or 70 bottled versions, often sourced from all over the world! One certainly has to be careful in the definition of cider however, as a small-scale producer I associate with tells me many of the ciders available across the bar these days are about 30% apple juice and the

rest is water and chemicals - or to put it another way, certainly not a 'real' product! As spring turns to summer and young men turn their attention to ... not love, but playing daft outdoor summer games (hopefully whilst supporting their local pub at the same time) we discover that an additional feature that must be made to appear in the next edition of 'Played at the Pub' by Arthur Taylor (essential reading by the way) is a new contest. It's the 'Throwing and Cobbing'* section, for in addition to 'Pea Throwing' (Lewes, Sussex) 'Yorkshire Pudding Throwing' (Ramsbottom, Lancashire)) and 'Black Pudding Throwing' (Lumb, Yorkshire) must also be added 'Dorset Knob Throwing'. Now anyone who knows about the West Country will understand that a 'Dorset Knob' is in fact a biscuit (see? perfectly innocent) and at the village of Cattistock (now even without it's tiny station that was stolen and rebuilt at Thornford) is where the annual knob throwing takes place. Last year the knob festival attracted 700 entrants and over 5000 spectators, yet the media was strangely silent to this event, and were instead concentrating on politics, war, disease, famine and Simon Cowell. Starting in 2008, the festival has such

darts. There was even something involving a certain Cerne Abbas Giant, a subject which we probably had best leave alone, it being a family-orientated magazine an' all. I am sure the local pub did well; and I hope that YOUR pub can come up with a team to challenge the Cattistock contestants next year, for I am sure that it will benefit not just your local pub, but everyone, with that essential spirit that holds communities together. In conclusion, I think it should now be re-titled 'World Dorset Knobthrowing' as this must be the case, surely? Cheers!

above song will get a free drink! Last month Terry Francis correctly guessed it was Stevie Wonder and ‘My Cherie Amour’. Well what a month that was. We have had quite a busy one, couple of good parties to tell you about and a couple of good fund raisers helped the month tick along. Mind you the roadworks on the West Coker Road don’t help: 6 weeks !!?? Don’t make me laugh. Whenever you drive through there is no one there doing anything. In April a good friend and customer Malcolm Gulliver decided enough was enough and he has retired from work. Well done Malc! We had a fabulous party here with loads of family and friends helping to give him a great send-off. Congratulations. During the month we also had a surprise 50th Birthday Party for my brother Darren Lambden - lots of secret phone calls and e-mails managed to get a great bunch of friends old and new along to a super night. Well done Darren! X We had a couple of cracking Charity Quiz Nights in April. First of all the boys and girls from Wickes had a staff bash which included a Quiz and Bingo and they raised over £700. We also had the folk from HSBC who had a Charity Quiz run by Ann Evans which raised £400. So over £1000 raised in 2 night’s great stuff! And lots of happy faces at the pub. Next month got a nice bit of music lined up for you. On the 5th of June Mr. D’Arcy will be here so a super night to look forward to. On the the 19th of June John Ramon makes a welcome return singing in the bar. On the last Friday (26th) Hells Bells bring their AC/DC tribute show to the function room, tickets are £10 and available from the pub. They Say

That in Sparkford, a Dorset police officer was the victim of a fearless robbery - but the only thing taken was a tube of toothpaste. The police are now looking for someone with clean, strong white teeth. That when Derrick Lampard of Mere purchased a pair of trousers for his holiday - his wife June received two bonus pairs free, and yes, they did fit.

That Paddy Ashdown of Norton Sub Hamdon, famous for his attitude, will shortly be known for the-hat-he-chewed!!

That Wincanton’s Tracy Burden could only get her new three piece suite into the house by removing the lounge window.

That according to CAMRA, when it comes to real cider, May is the appropriate time to taste the offerings from the 2014 harvest. That it goes without saying when visiting Mrs Posh of Wimborne Sylvie and John Hamblin of Yeovil - have ‘posh’ seats when visiting the theatre.

That Helen at The Lord Nelson Norton Sub Hamdon is waiting to see if blondes really do have more fun. That flying badgers can now be seen in North Cadbury.

That Castle Cary’s Andrew Bishop Electricals may soon take on a nautical theme, with Ollie Bishop’s talents as a model boat builder.

That Stephanie Tole of South Petherton will certainly have a lot of ‘folk’ around on her birthday. That according to Lin Penn of Shepton Mallet - the easy part was to admire the recent family wedding photographs of Petulia White - the hardest part was trying to open the album.

That congratulations go to the bodybuilder, Jane Carter of Tone Zone Fitness Centre in Yeovil - a vision in pink, and a definite winner in the recent NABBA Western competition good luck with the forthcoming British Championship.

That Di at The Lamb & Lark in Limington recently enjoyed an impromptu fillet steak supper - but fortunately candlelight was no longer necessary.

That Dawn Graham of Sparkford was unsure what to wear for her recent debut in the works video for the website, so, not wanting to appear indecisive, she only took along four outfits. THE VISITOR June 2015 39

Diamonds Bow Down to Japanese Treasure at Auction

Diamonds usually prove to be a ‘girl's best friend’ when it comes to jewellery auctions at Lawrences in Crewkerne - and prices were indeed strong in their recent 450-lot sale - but an unexpectedly good result for a more exotic lot provided the day's top price. A sparkling array of diamonds was greeted with eager bids and top prices included a diamond solitaire at £2,500, a 2.4 carat solitaire at £7,680, another twostone ring with 2.7 carats of diamonds at £7,320 and £11,100 for a stunning Art Deco diamond clip brooch with necklace conversion by Garrard & Co.

It is admired for its bronze-like sheen, the inventiveness of the method and the subtlety of the decorative effects that can be achieved by selective burnishing. The technique was wholly unfamiliar

in the West until the middle of the 19th Century. The necklace and earrings in this lot depicted Oriental birds amongst foliage and the set was offered in a floral decorated lacquer box. Keen bids from this country and abroad pushed the lot beyond its estimate to make a remarkable £28,060.

Father’s Day - 21st June

WHEN DECIDING what to give dad for Father’s Day, apart from the usual socks or tie, many of us will naturally think of providing a welcome boost to his usual alcoholic tipple. Both beer and a wee dram of the hard stuff come most readily to mind but wine is an increasingly popular choice, with the added bonus in that it can be enjoyed as part of a family meal. Should the weather continue to improve (rain prevails at the time of writing) it might be just the time to give the BBQ its first airing of the season. For those on a budget, big fat juicy burgers and sizzling sausages will be sure to please the carnivores in the family, although local lamb is now at its peak and will hit the celebratory spot nicely. Red meat naturally lends itself to big, powerful reds, with a hint of wood smoke, spice and pepper, leather and tobacco, and this description could equally apply to the man in your life. Having recently attended a splendid tasting of the wines on offer from the South African Cape region, producers Babylonstoren would be my top choice with their

Wine & Dine

flagship wine Nebukadnesar 2012, 14% abv, coming in at a reasonable £20 a bottle. Made from a traditional Bordeaux blend of grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot) it has real depth, with hints of violet, thyme and blackcurrant along with a characteristic cigar box aroma. Although ready for drinking now, its forward tannins have yet to allow the wine to reach its full potential. I am also very fond of the renowned Chateau Musar 2004, 13% abv, is available locally for £31.50. Made by the Hochar family in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon, vines have been cultivated in the region for over 6,000 years; this remote and unspoilt location, along with the hand-harvesting of the grapes by local Bedouins, ensured these wines achieved ‘organic’ status long before we had ever coined the term. Seven years in the making, and aged for one year in French oak barrrels, all of

Musar's wines are unfined and unfiltered, and are therefore suitable for vegans. Dominated by the black fruit flavours of the Bordeaux grape Cabernet Sauvignon, the addition of Rhône grapes Cinsault and Carignan provide a supple spiciness. Variations from vintage to vintage retain the distinctive Lebanese style, and with time the wines become mellow and take on a tawny hue; the resulting wine is smooth as silk on the palate enhanced by aromas of tobacco, spice and mocha. Richlytextured, the 'crust’ formed in older wines is a common feature so these wines will need to be carefully decanted before drinking. Back in Europe, and closer to home, the Syrah and Grenache dominated Serabel Châteauneufdu-Pape 2010 14% abv, from the Southern Rhône, at just £18 is well worth a try. A complex and distinctive wine, its well integrated tannins provide a smooth and supple texture. On

Also worth consideration is an aged Rioja, with its spicy character which is achieved through extended barrel ageing. Viña Ardanza produce a fine Rioja Reserva from the La Rioja Alta region. Brown and Forrest

Brown and Forrest, the Smokery in Hambridge, would be delighted if you would join them at their smokery open day, to be held on Saturday 13th June between 10am and 4pm. There will be lots to see and taste, with tours of the smokery and a chance to taste all the products whilst enjoying a free glass of wine. What a lovely treat to enjoy! Their shop will be stocked to the gunnels with smoked treats to take home for friends and family, or even just for yourself when the mood takes you. The restaurant will be open, but we would strongly advise booking a table in advance. Plus their mail order service will be available. There is so much to see and do in this lovely part of Somerset, there are potters, cider makers and the beautiful levels to explore, why not make a day of it? If you can’t make it, the restaurant and shop are open all year round, or you can enjoy a bit of what you fancy at home using their mail order service and online shop, all delivered to the door of your choosing. GARDENING MONTHLY by Richard Cumming

The Joy of Plants!

Orchard Park

THESE ARE MAGIC DAYS, with everything in full growth but not yet flowering; all the promise just about to come good! So far the spring has been very kind with no really difficult weather, if anything a little on the dry side but we can manage. It is important not to let young seedlings dry out before they have

got their roots deep enough to find moisture. So many of our favourite plants perform in late spring and early summer; Bluebells, magnolias and rhododendrons not to mention the flowering cherries, crabs, hawthorns and the wonderful apple blossom. As I write I can see Viburnum plicatum ‘Mariesii’ in flower with its iconic layered

branches and creamy-white lace cap flowers, next to a bank of Symphytum ‘Hidcote Blue’ an ornamental comfrey which makes incredibly fast covering ground cover! Once they are done the roses should make their entrance onto the flower parade! Rose leaves are quite soft at this time and it makes sense to start treating for black spot and other fungal problems earlier rather than later. Protection now gives better results in summer.

Plant of the Month - Roses

England, and Scotland for that matter are famous for roses, and commercial rose growers have

shown their dedication and years of experienced, breeding and growing fantastic roses; it’s a fact that you’ll find a rose of some sort in nearly 80% of our gardens. Fencing & Gates Supplied and Erected by the

them, feeding the plant and the soil with slow release fertiliser and organic matter, spraying with a combined fungicide and insecticide to help them fight infections and infestations. In this part of the world, our heavy clay soils suit roses down to the ground although they benefit from well-rotted compost or manure. Planting has also changed over the years. The roses themselves are grafted onto rootstock growing in long rows in the field. When the graft has taken and some new growth achieved, then in the late summer the plant is dug up. This is known as a bare root rose and can be sold straight away – usually by mail order, or potted up for sale throughout the year. You may have noticed that the compost will often fall away from the roots of a rose planted between October and May. After that the root structure has developed and will hold it all together. Roses are pretty tough and will mostly survive planting at anytime with a little bit of care.

Shrub Rose Bonica.

The list of rose varieties grows longer each year with new colours and styles. The summer garden shows at Chelsea and more importantly Hampton Court are the places to see the new varieties being introduced. Breeders are often criticised for a lack of scent in their creations and it is true that in the breeding process you may have found fantastic colour and disease resistance, but suffer from lack of scent, or a beautiful scented rose is an awful colour! That’s just the way it goes. June is full of roses and because they are grown in pots you can plant them at anytime of the year, even when in full flower so you can really see what you’re getting. And if its scent you’re after, have a look at the wonderful David Austin roses – these are often old fashioned shrub roses bred with modern varieties to get the best of all worlds. Clever stuff and a remarkable achievement for British roses.

Jobs for the Month

The veg garden is looking good at the minute but the recently sown and planted crops need watering to avoid setbacks. Potatoes may also need watering as well if they are to produce a decent crop, but water can be conserved by applying it early in the day so that it doesn’t evaporate before it can soak in. Wet leaves over night are never a good idea as those are the

perfect conditions for fungal disease to develop. In the past we have been able to use a preventative copper spray on the leaves. It is not absorbed into the plant but stops fungal spore carried in the wind from germinating and infecting the plant. However, copper sprays [Bordeaux mixture, which contains copper sulphate, and copper oxychloride] have been withdrawn and cannot be used after November 30th 2015. Blight resistant varieties will become more and more important as time goes on. Carrots can be tricky sometimes, and the best results are achieved with a fairly firm and even seed bed, sown thinly. Outside the veg plot, you need to support taller growing plants such as Delphiniums, and hollyhocks, restrain rampant spreaders and remain firmly in control over the weeds. If you don’t then they will crowd out the plants you do want before you have realised it. Take out flowering spikes as soon as they have finished to keep plants flowering. You may well already use the ‘Chelsea Chop’ on suitable herbaceous perennials to bush

GARDENING

them out, making them less tall and leggy and needing less staking. It also delays flowering until later in the summer which may be useful in a mixed border where everything is tending to flower at once. Why Chelsea? It’s a simple coincidence as the best time to cut them back for this purpose is about the time of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! Most seed raised annuals and tender perennials from cuttings should be hardened off by now and ready to be planted out. This is best done on a day that is overcast as it helps to reduce the shock to the plant, then water them in well. Our weather is predictably unpredictable, so watch out for cold or strong winds, prolonged dry periods or hail! Apart from that, all should be fine! Hanging baskets and planters that are really full and

impressive, are inevitably high maintenance and need regular care and attention with watering, feeding and deadheading if you don’t want them to exhaust themselves by the middle of July. Weeding is vital this month if you want to keep on top of it; I keep a hand sprayer with readyto-use glyphosate weedkiller handy [clearly marked as weedkiller!] and spray the perennial weeds as they become obvious. There is always a push hoe somewhere nearby to use on the seedling and annual weeds. Lawns need regular mowing to keep down the broadleaved weeds and encourage the finer leavedgrasses. If you mow and remove the clippings then you really should feed it. Good multipurpose lawn treatments are not nearly as expensive as they used to be and the difference is noticeable.

Attend to the topiary – trim box and bay trees, then feed and top up the compost in the pot. Most evergreens can be trimmed, and keep wall shrubs and climbers tied in and prune off the growth that is obviously heading in the wrong direction. In the vegetable garden plant out runner beans, tomatoes, courgettes and anything else you’ve been hanging on to. Keep regular small sowings of salad crops and mange tout peas will still crop in time. Leeks should be planted out, carrots sown [late crops are less likely to be attacked by carrot root fly] onions hoed, sweet corn sown, parsnips sown and herbs planted out. Spinach can be sown repeatedly – treat it like a salad crop, and if you like rocket then sow that but sow a little every now and again to get a constant supply. Greenhouse tomatoes need

MOTORING

VINTAGE Motor Cycling

JUNE IS HERE once more, and believe it or not, this month sees the longest day and the onset of the evenings drawing in. Although the long summer evenings are put to good use as many Sections and clubs hold evening runs during the month. Starting with the Somerset Section they have an Evening Run for their club night on the 4th (note a 6-30pm start time), followed by the Girder Fork/Rigid Frame Run from Emborough on the 7th. Lastly they have an evening meet at the Lamb Inn, Spaxton on the 18th. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section has a Bring an Interesting Object for their club night on the 8th and on the 14th will be the Mercian Incursion Run from the Golden Fleece at Shaw, near Melksham. The Dorset Section has its Lunch Meet at West Stour on the 3rd and its Pie and Pint Evening Run on the 10th (note a 7pm start). Followed on the 17th (Wednesday) by a Mid Week Run from the Udder Farm Shop at East Stour. The 21st sees the running of the Purbeck Run which starts at the Botany Bay Inn at Winterborne Zelston. The 27th will hold the usual Breakfast Meet at West Stour. On the 28th will be the Jeff Clew Memorial Run from the Haynes International Motor Museum. This run is a small part of the Somerset Motorcycling Weekend being organised by the museum. Over the two days of the 27th and 28th there will be static displays, demonstrations, an autojumble, Somerset Police Bikesafe, the Blood

delivery bikes and just about every activity connected with motorcycling. A ride out will be available on the Saturday. Camping for the weekend is available and no doubt a bar and music will be provided for the evenings. A full and jolly weekend is planned and should not be missed. The Jeff Clew Memorial Run is in memory and honour of Jeff who used to write these articles before me. There will be two routes to cater for all ages of machines, and trophies for the winners in each class. A new award this year will go to the rider of the best Japanese machine, this is to show that the VMCC is an 'all inclusive' club welcoming makes from any age and every country. For further details of all these events then ring 01935-872528.

My picture this month shows a rather unusual machine. The proud owner, Peter Hallowes from Sturminster Newton, stands next to his 1974 Moto Guzzi, 500cc single. Nothing unusual yet as there are quite a few of these around, that is until you look at its colour. Most Moto Guzzi machines are painted the factory colour of bright red. This one is finished in what I would call Vatican blue. It is that colour because it was one of a fleet of machines used to escort the Pope in his Popemobil

wherever he went. The Vatican has its own police force and specially skilled riders would use these machines to escort his holiness on all occasions, including those special ceremonial duties, with special responsibilities to keep the Pope safe. I presume that a new fleet of more modern machines have now been purchased to carry out these duties. Peter's machine still carries a very loud two tone horn which he takes great delight in demonstrating at every opportunity. I have recently given thought about the wonders of modern communication. I am certainly not a technophobe. I have a computer on which I can do word processing, I can handle my digital camera and send and receive e-mails. I suppose I use about 10% of the capability of my system. My digital camera is mostly automatic in operation. My mobile phone is of the very basic type which can only make and receive calls. I have just purchased a two year old car which comes equipped with a Satnav. Another new gadget to come to terms with. The lady who lives in the little box on the dash is well spoken and obviously very clever as she speaks many different languages, although she does sound rather cross sometimes when I ignore her instructions, but she soon relents and recalculates the next instructions. She is very precise as her directions to turn left or right or take the second exit at the roundabout ahead, are accurate down to the last yard. I find it all quite fascinating but no doubt irritation will follow. I do not own a lap-top nor a tablet or a 4G phone which is all singing and dancing. You see I do not have a 10 year old grandchild to help me with all this technology. But now I wonder what has happened to all those people who produced maps, also when did you last use a red telephone kiosk? When did you last see a telephone kiosk and was it in working order? If our enemies wished to knock out this country all they need do is destroy all those satellites floating around in space. I wonder if our younger generations would cope if these new communications were wiped out? In the meantime I am contemplating getting a small Satnav which I can use on my old bikes so I may never get lost again, that is until the batteries go flat. Now is the time of year to get out and use your old vehicles and support whichever club you have joined. At present I still cannot ride due to an injured hand and look with envy at those going out and enjoying themselves. Do it whilst you can as there will come a day, for whatever reason, when all of us will no longer be able to enjoy this hobby of ours. Rod Hann

PAPERCHASE

YOU MIGHT RECALL that in last month’s column I rabbited on about the Western Daily Press’s latest price rise to 75p for the weekday issues and £1.30 for Saturday’s paper. No sooner had the increases come into effect on 30th March than the ‘Save 20% on the price of your newspaper’ promotion was launched . . . and repeated in almost every issue since then. The price printed on the front page is now shown as ‘75p or 60p for subscribers’ and an 08444 phone number is given for subscription enquiries. So I rang it. And I was told that if I paid them £105.04 by credit card they would send me sixmonths’-worth of prepaid vouchers to give to my newsagent in exchange for my newspapers. Or if I preferred I could set up a direct debit for £17.50 a month for six months, giving me a saving of fourpence (and saving them the costs of pestering me for another £105.04 at the end of the six months). If the March price rise was really necessary, the paper must be banking on a substantial increase in sales if it can afford to sell it to subscribers at the price it was charging before July of last year. And banking on banking a lot of prepayments at more than £100 a time. And who, I wondered, is bearing the costs of the promotion. The lady who answered my call was, to put it kindly, vague on this point, merely telling me that prepaid copies would continue to earn my newsagent the same mark-up but apparently not knowing whether this would be a percentage of the 60p rather than the 75p. But she did advise me to check with the newsagent that he would accept the vouchers. Needless to say, I haven’t subscribed. I prefer to pay my newspaper bill at the end of each four-week period rather than stump up a lot of money in advance. I see

that the publishers are running a parallel promotion to attract subscribers to the Western Gazette – it’s the same phone number to call if you’re tempted. A headline in the 7th May issue of the Western Gazette’s Castle Cary etc. edition caught my eye. ‘Fair springs into action after six-year wait’, it announced, and the opening paragraphs of the story informed readers that ‘A fair celebrating the spring bank holiday is to return to Bruton after a sixyear absence. The Packhorse Fair was a highlight of the town's calendar, expanding rapidly over its ten-year history But in 2009 with the increasing cost of running and insuring the event as well as difficulties with new licensing regulation, organisers decided to stop running the annual fair. The returned fair will feature arts, crafts and a duck race along the River Brue in aid of Childreach International.’ Strange, I thought. I recall attending this fair last year, and the year before, and the year before that – and seeing reports of it in the Gazette. I recall, too, that it was rained off in 2008, and that it was replaced by the Dovecote Fair in 2009 and 2010, but it has been going from strength to strength since then. So how could the Gazette’s reporter get the

facts so very wrong? You tell me! Here’s a snippet that, although not local to Visitorland, I found both topical and amusing. The Times has been running an ‘Election Watch’ column throughout the campaign and in the 9th May issue reported that ‘EW cannot remember an election that cried out more desperately for a good sub-editor. It was all over the shop: the ill-advised Lib Dem leaflet metaphor bombshell stated: “On 7th May you can cause an earthquake that will build the homes Hackney needs”; the flyer from the Tory candidate James Duddridge trumpeting the "General Erection”; or the manifesto of the Reality Party which, as part of its drug policy, promises to “Treat addition effectively”. The 2015 Election Typo Award, however, was definitely won by Ukip which, due to sloppy procedure, fielded in Barnsley a candidate called “Wayne Kerr”. Oh, hang on. He was real.’ Finally, sticking with the election, a bit of ‘sloppy procedure’ from the Western Daily Press (pictured below). In these days of electronic page make-up it beggars belief that, first, such mistakes can be made, and secondly, that nobody spotted this one before it went to press. Chronicler.

The new premises, situated in the High Street, is the former Lush’s Butcher Shop. It has been designed to have three dedicated showrooms for easy viewing – Home Entertainment, Laundry & Refrigeration and Built-in Appliances & Range Cookers.

Home Entertainment – features the very latest TV models from the Panasonic range, many with a 5-year warranty, plus the ever popular Roberts Radio range.

Laundry & Refrigeration – a comprehensive stock of fridges, freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers to suit your personal requirements are on display from leading makes that you can rely on including Hotpoint, Siemens and Neff.

Built-in Appliances & Ranges – with more space available in the new shop the built-in range from Bosch and Neff has been greatly increased and includes the latest ‘hide and slide’ cooker from Neff.
